Nach der Flucht aus dem Gefängnis von Silver City, New Mexico, flieht der 15-jährige Henry McCarty nach Arizona. Unter dem Namen William Henry Antrim gerät der auch als "Kid" bezeichnete Heranwachsende schnell in schlechte Gesellschaft. Schon bald als Pferdedieb vom Militär gesucht, tötet "Kid Antrim" am 17.8.1877 erstmals einen Mann. Seine Flucht verschlägt ihn zurück nach New Mexico, wo er in Lincoln County landen und dort fortan unter einem anderen Namen berühmt werden sollte: William H. Bonney, oder auch "Billy, the Kid".
