(00:00):
We've heard about low E glass.
We may not know what it is and it has to do with the windows in your home.
And if you have an older home and older windows,
you may not have low E glass.
So I've asked the window expert to join me today,
Lindol Woodruff, Lyndol.
How are you doing?
How amazing.
Thank you.
Yeah.
Low E we've heard it right.

(00:22):
And of course,
you understand it fully because you live this world.
Can you explain to everybody what it is and why they need it?
Sure.
So low E stands for low emissivity and really what it does is completely,
it blocks out U V rays.
It's a coating that goes on the inside part of the outer pane of glass.

(00:44):
So your in your new insulated energy efficient glass unit is gonna be double pay.
Of course,
each paint is twice as thick as a regular pane of glass.
So a regular pane of glass that your home is built with is only 16th of an inch.
Oh wow.
Insulated glass units are an eighth of an inch and there's two of them.
So it's really like four pans of regular glass,

(01:06):
the low e goes on the inside of the outer pain and really what it does,
it blocks out the U V rays.
So it protects the inside of your home from harmful U V rays that fades.
The furniture fades,
the floors fades,
the carpet fades the artwork.
It's the same difference in wearing cheap sunglasses and polarized ray bands.

(01:26):
I always like to use that analogy.
So it's really like putting polarized ray bands on your home.
And it also helps um to block out the heat,
the solar heat gain that can penetrate through and get into the home.
So a combination of the low E and the glass and the Argon gas is what acts as the biggest muffler of heat and cold to keep it out.

(01:52):
So perfect example,
if it's four degrees outside that your inside painted glass is gonna be room temperature,
it's very astounding.
So low E is low emissivity.
It doesn't allow things to emit.
There you go.
I like the explanation and it makes a lot of sense and when people see this,

(02:14):
they're gonna think,
well,
I should have low e how many people have a low E product in their home.
Now,
do you think what percentage I mean is it,
is it most people or,
or is it not?
Well,
all of the new builds there is,
especially here in Texas,
there is a Texas star energy code now.
So even the,

(02:34):
the cheap builder grade windows that new homes are being built with.
There is a small level of low e in the glass and it's the bare minimum requirement.
So,
so even though it may look like it's a decent window with,
because,
you know,
they're building homes with vinyl windows now,
they're not using metal frame windows really anymore.

(02:55):
There's aluminum builder grade windows,
they're using vinyl windows and you can see a little tent in the glass.
Um,
you know,
it,
it's,
it's just the bare minimum.
So low E is becoming more commonplace and it is part of code now.
So the older homes though that were built,
seventies,
eighties,
early nineties,
none of those homes have low E in the glass.

(03:17):
It's just clear glass and literally all it does is block out the wind from getting in your house and sometimes it's not even effective in doing that because you got cracked seals that start to happen.
But the older glass,
there's no protection at all.
Um So yes,
if you have an older home,
upgrading the windows is very,

(03:38):
very,
very important by upgrading the windows.
Now you get an aesthetic change,
you're going to get less drafts,
you're gonna save money on your utility bills and your air conditioning system and heating system will last longer because it's not gonna run as much.
That's right.

(03:58):
Yeah.
So you're gonna save money on,
on prevented or like maintenance costs over the years on that H VAC system um,
it literally eliminate all the drafts and outside noise.
It makes your home a lot more quiet.
Um,
a lot more comfortable,
even temperatures throughout the home.
So you're not having cold,
uh,
cold spots and hot spots and plus your,

(04:20):
you know,
your furniture is gonna stay prettier longer because you're not getting harmful.
You raise into the house.
Yeah.
And your ac and heating system actually has moving parts.
The windows don't,
they're gonna last a very,
very long time.
And so there's really no maintenance on them.
You just might want to clean them once in a while.
Yeah.
And speaking of low,
low e there are different levels of low e with the new energy efficient windows,

(04:42):
there's,
you know,
there's 3 66 glass,
there's 3 40 glass,
there's 2 70 glass,
there's 3 60 glass plus I 89.
And that's kind of the,
that's the biggest level.
It's like a,
a completely extra level of low E so it's super,
super energy efficient.
No U V rays get through and it virtually eliminates all of the solar heat gain.

(05:04):
I mean,
it's very impressive stuff.
So if you're up on a hill and you get beam like lots of sun and stuff,
3 66 plus I 89 would be a good option if you're in a standard neighborhood and there's trees and stuff like that.
A standard 3 66 is fine for your home to get really good energy efficiency,

(05:24):
not necessary to spend that extra money to get the ultra,
ultra ultra.
So I look at all that stuff,
the neighborhood you're in,
surrounded by trees,
porch coverings.
Um,
and really put the right window in the right opening because you can do different types of glass and different openings because everything's custom so low.
E is a,
is a great conversation to have with homeowners based on their locale.

(05:48):
Well,
Lyndal,
this is why I love having you on the program.
You're a consultant,
you know your stuff.
You're not just a window salesman.
Right?
You go out there,
you educate people.
Oh,
no,
no,
no,
no,
no,
no,
no.
Right.
That's what,
that's what we're all about.
We just want to educate and help.
Um,
um,
I get in that conversation a lot.
You know,
people say,
well,
you say that because you sell windows.

(06:10):
No,
I,
I choose windows because of how beneficial it is.
And I'm just trying to help and share information.
If you don't want to buy,
don't,
don't buy it.
I'm just here to help.
I'm just here to pass on the info.
Yeah.
It's really fun to be an inside guy who knows something and when we know things,
we're like,
we gotta tell everybody about this because we don't know.
And,

(06:30):
and so I do the same thing in my business.
It's like people don't know.
And that's why I love doing this type of thing because all of the different people who come on the program,
whether it's Lyndal or another guest,
what ends up happening is we get to tell everybody the secrets in those industries and that's why it's so exciting.
It is very exciting.
May I share a fast story?
Sure.

(06:50):
Do I have two minutes?
Ok.
So a friend of mine tagged me in a Facebook mom group the other day and then she invited me to join.
So I'm like,
I got invited by a mom.
So I'm gonna join,
right?
So I,
I accepted the invite and I joined this mom group and there was a post,
someone looking for a window group,
a window company.

(07:11):
So I was tagged in it,
right?
And then one of the other moms chimed in and said,
well,
if it's fogged up glass,
don't waste your money on windows.
All you have to do is replace the glass.
And that is such a really big common misconception.
The fogging.
There's a lot of issues in the just replacing glass.

(07:34):
If you don't fix it the whole,
if you don't get the opening done,
right,
it's gonna lead to fogged up glass again very soon.
It's not an actual fix.
So of course,
me being like,
I want everybody to know the truth about what really goes on.
I,
I wrote this really long paragraph in response to that and she's like,
well,
you're just trying,
trying to sell windows.

(07:55):
And I said,
no,
I'm just here to help.
There's some information that is not common knowledge with homeowners and I want everybody to have the information and then make the best decision for them.
Once I give the information,
if you decide you just want to replace glass,
cool,
whatever,
I'll refer you to somebody that will replace just the glass.
I won't replace just your glass.

(08:16):
I won't do something to someone's home that's going to potentially cause another problem.
So that was a cool little exchange and I was kind of shaking like,
am I gonna get in trouble for calling out someone in the mom's group?
No,
you know,
you just have to speak the truth and you got to stick by it.
Hey Lyndol,
thank you so much for joining me today.

(08:36):
Always loving having you on the program.
Thank you.
All of Lyndol information is located in the mom's group as well as here in the description of this podcast.
