(00:01):
We're gonna talk windows here and not all windows are created equal.
When I was a kid,
I lived up north and up north,
a lot of the windows were wood windows.
So in the summertime when it got humid,
it'd be hard to open them and there were weights in there to,
to move the ropes.
I mean,
it's totally sash system,

(00:23):
totally different from today.
Um,
certainly,
certainly they weren't double pane windows.
Today.
We talk about wood a little bit,
we talk about vinyl,
we talk about fiberglass and the questions come in here to the radio studio and I want to pose this question to our window expert,
Lyndol Woodruff.
Lyndol,
how are you doing?

(00:44):
How are you?
I'm living the dream,
my friend.
All right.
So what's the big difference between vinyl and fiberglass windows?
We hear about this all the time,
these,
these two different materials.
What's the difference?
Well,
I mean,
obviously fiberglass,
fiberglass is a more durable.
Uh,
you know,

(01:04):
we,
we primarily do vinyl replacement windows.
We do have a source for fiberglass if we want to go that direction.
Um And I know in,
in our region where we live in Dallas because of how the weather is here.
Vinyl is fine if you have a,
a good quality vinyl frame,

(01:25):
energy efficient window.
First off,
it's a lot less expensive than fiberglass.
Um,
but if you get a good quality vinyl,
energy efficient frame with a good insulated glass unit,
that's the,
the average home around here.
That's really all they need to get a good performing window and get good results.
They,
the average family doesn't need to spend a lot of the money associated with a fiberglass window.

(01:48):
Fiberglass is,
you know,
it's no,
it's a no brainer.
Fiberglass is more durable than vinyl.
But there's certain environments in the,
in the United States that,
yeah,
you wouldn't want to use vinyl because of extreme extreme weather conditions for long periods of time,
especially cold.
It can kind of break it down over time.
That's why you were saying up north,
you see a lot of aluminum wood clad windows.

(02:09):
You don't really vinyl is not really a thing up there.
I mean,
it's the tundra during the winter.
So,
but here where we're at and some of the fiberglass salespeople in homes here,
they spend half their time bashing vinyl in their presentation.
Well,
here in our environment in our region,
a good vinyl window is all you need.

(02:30):
You don't need to spend all the extra money.
And the thing about fiberglass is they don't make,
you know,
a lot of the homes here are eighties and nine,
seventies,
eighties and nineties brick homes that have the arch top windows,
the round tops and stuff like that.
They fiberglass windows don't make those,
they're rectangular windows and there's height restrictions.

(02:51):
So for replacement,
it's harder on some of these homes.
If they go the fiberglass route,
it ends up being a really high quote because you have to pay for all the labor to fill in the,
the arches and fill in the,
the round tops and,
and,
and lower brickwork and all kinds of stuff.
It can,
it can turn into an astronomical quote for new construction.

(03:12):
Some of the newer homes that are getting built,
fiberglass is a great option because they're,
they're,
they're building these homes with specs to meet.
There's no more round tops,
it's not trendy,
you know.
So for replacement windows here where we're at in Collin County mckinney,
Plano Frisco area,
vinyl frames.
Perfect.
And it'll save you a lot of money because they still make round top windows.

(03:36):
That's why I love talking to you because you're not just a window salesman,
you're a consultant.
It's your job to meet with the homeowner and say,
Mr and Mrs Smith,
I understand you've done a lot of reading on the internet that's fine in this environment with all of our experience,

(03:56):
decades of experience.
This is what we recommend and that's really a true professional,
knowing the environment and knowing the right product because so many people say I want this,
but it's not practical.
A Lamborghini is not a practical vehicle for a family of five,

(04:19):
especially in a community that has speed bumps.
Right.
Because we can all picture that.
A Lamborghini only has two seats.
It sits very low.
Right.
So,
so it's going to bottom out and you're not gonna be able to put the kids in it.
Ok.
And it's expensive.
Right.
So some people might get an impractical window and pay too much for it to find out that they should have gone with a different type of window.

(04:44):
Yes.
And that's my goal.
I tell homeowners all the time,
my goal is to help you get a good window and help you save money because some of these window quotes are just astronomical.
It blows my mind and yeah,
fiberglass is of good material.
But,
you know,
come on,
man,
it's,
it's a little gou it's all over the place.

(05:06):
So we just want to help,
especially in our community,
help the homeowners,
uh,
you know,
increase the comfort level of their home,
help them save some money and not have to worry about seal failure and fogging up and condensation and stuff down the road.
You know,
get a lot of life span out of their H VAC system and just bring the benefits on the lower side of the price spectrum.

(05:29):
And,
you know,
we have a,
a trusted manufacturer since 1984 that's local that produces a great vinyl frame window with the best glass on the market.
So that's what I stick to and,
but if they're really,
you know,
hell bent on going a different direction,
I can provide that too.
But I always want to lead with,
I,
what I feel like is,

(05:50):
is fair and good and will work really well for them and help them save some money.
So that's where our mindset is that I have that conversation with people all the time.
Yeah.
And that makes a lot of sense.
You,
you,
you educate them if they decide they want a different product like fiberglass and you're fine,
but at least they know the differences and what you recommend as an expert,

(06:11):
Linda as always.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
