Welcome back for another episode of You're Missen the Point Podcast. Today I have a fantastic collaboration with Julia from the Cosmic Peach Podcast. That's right Julia and I are back with another childhood favourite film breakdown with the 1990 fantasy, melodrama 'Edward Scissor Hands'.
Edward Scissor Hands written and directed by Tim Burton is a modern day fairytale which tells the story of Edward, a man created by eccentric inventor who died before finishing him. Edward is left incomplete with scissors where he should have hands.
One day when the local Avon lady representative (Peg) calls at the historic mansion where he has been living alone, she takes him home to stay with her family. He has to adapt to the new life and environment that he isn't used to. Soon he shows a talent in cutting hair and hedges and wins everyone's hearts.But life isn't always so sweet, at first everyone welcomes him into the community, but soon things begin to take a change for the worse.
Julia and I will continue to breakdown our childhood favourites in the coming months, watch this space! Last breakdown was all about suburban serial killers and satanism! We started off this episode sharing our general thoughts about Edward Scissor Hands and how it made its way in as a favourite childhood film.
We went on to discuss;
- Character names and etymological meaning.
- Cultural context of the film.
- Pinocchio, Frankenstein and Golems.
- Vincent Price the godfather of horror.
- Weaponising nostalgia.
- Liminal space.
- Abraxas symbolsim.
- Sacred Geometry (Rhombus).
- Mount Herman and other biblical links.
- Synthetic humans theory.
And much much more...
