ההתמכרות שינתה את פניה. ״בעבר לא היתה שאלה אם אני מכור או לא מכור, מגיל 14 נפלטתי מכל מסגרות הלימודים והחינוך והתחלתי להשתמש בסמים, היינו חבורה שהתפתחה להיות נרקומנים עם הפרעות התנהגות ופשיעה. היום, רוב האנשים שמגיעים אלי לטיפול הם רופאים, אנשי הייטק, אנשי עסקים, הם המכורים החדשים, כבר לא נשארו הרבה מכורים ישנים״.
אליהו אלבז, מייסד ומנהל את ״הרמוניה״, מכון לטיפול בהתמכרויות ובעצמו מכור נקי מביא את גישתו הטיפולית למחלת ההתמכרות. לטענתו, בני המשפחה לא צריכים לשים מידי דגש על השימוש עצמו אלא לשקף לבן המשפחה את ההתנהגויות שבאות לידי ביטוי כתוצאה מהשימוש.
תהליך הגמילה שלו החל בזכות הטיפול שעברה משפחתו בלעדיו, ״הייתי סרבן טיפול ומתנגד לטיפול, כרוני. אם לא היו מחייבים אותי והייתי עם הגב לקיר, לא הייתי חי היום״ אומר אלבז. בשלב מסוים בחייו הוא מצא את עצמו זרוק בתחנה המרכזית ישן על קרטונים, כשניסה ליצור קשר עם אחותו ולבקש כסף היא ענתה לו:
