Speaker 1 (00:00):
Saint Louis Ovarian Cancer Awareness. There's a run walk that
I get to MC five k and one pole run
walk October twelfth. Sus An executive director and of course
ovarian cancer survivor.

Speaker 2 (00:09):
Yes, survivor of ovarian cancer diagnosed at age twenty three,
so definitely wasn't on my radar or my healthcare professional's radar.
But I'm so blessed to be here and able to
be passionate about this cause and raise awareness.

Speaker 3 (00:23):
So straight out of the gate, twenty three? Is that young?
Is there a certain age where we start watching for
something like this?

Speaker 2 (00:28):
Typically I've known of an eighteen year old who was diagnosed.
So the more you know the signs and symptoms and
an awareness of your family history, genetics, other cancers, there
is no too young really, it's just got to be
on You have to know, got to.

Speaker 4 (00:43):
Be on your radar always. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
Yeah, And I think that a lot of attention is
given and it should be to breast cancer awareness, but
a lot of people don't about ovarian cancer. Is this
part of the awareness.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
Yes, and that's why we're thrilled to be able to
do things like this because September is National Ovarian Cancer
Awareness month. We try to teal up Saint Louis, but
more importantly, the teal is a representative of our cancer color.
But it's really the message that we're trying to get
out there, which are the signs and symptoms. They can
be subtle there, you know things that happen to women.

(01:14):
Their women feel on occasion or more frequently feeling full, quickly, bloading,
abdominal pain, and they could be very benign. But if
they're chronic and consistent and get worse, please inform a
healthcare professional. Know your family history. No, is there a
potential risk?

Speaker 3 (01:33):
Is this something that they check for like annually, like
when my wife goes in well that.

Speaker 2 (01:38):
Is many women think that they have their annual exam
and they're good to go, but that is not the case.
The PAP smerror does not screen for ovarian cancer. There
is no diagnostic test for ovarian cancer. So we're at
a disadvantage right out of the gate as far as
the gynecologic cancers go and being able to diagnose it.
That's why the symptoms are important. Your family history is important,

(02:00):
and being an advocate for your own health and making
sure that you're persistent about something that's going on that
you just in your gut. No, this isn't right, This isn't.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
Normal for me, And a lot of people don't realize
that family history genetics. Because I was tested and I
am BROCA one positive that breast cancer and ovarian cancer
are linked as well as for males, I believe prostate
cancer is linked to this. Yes and call it.

Speaker 4 (02:22):
Oh wow, I didn't know that either. Yeah, that's incredible.

Speaker 1 (02:24):
And I know my insurance paid for the DNA testing
or the genetic test, the genetic tests.

Speaker 2 (02:29):
Yeah, genetic testing has come a long way and it
is important. And again, if a physician feels like it
should be ordered for you based on your family history,
please take the test.

Speaker 3 (02:39):
Do yeah, because you know, like for prostate cancer, I
know that there's this real simple blood test that you
can take to look for elevated signs something like that,
similar to ovarian cancer. Is there something that simple that
you can do or is it a little more depth?

Speaker 2 (02:50):
Oh, there isn't a simple diagnostic test for ovarian cancer.
The genetic test will show if you are positive as
Judy is, that she's at higher breasts and to be
aware and for bras standovarian but that's kind of where
the science ends at this point.

Speaker 3 (03:06):
Sure, and so this run walk survivors those I'm sure
who out there honoring those who maybe they've lost to
ovarian cancer. Can you still be a part of the
run walk.

Speaker 2 (03:15):
Absolutely. We are expecting twelve to fifteen hundred survivors, caregivers,
healthcare professionals, friends, family supporters, families who've lost a loved
one walking on behalf of their loved one. There will
be a memory wall dedicated to those warriors that we
have lost. There'll be a survivor ceremony for the Teal
sisters who are still fighting the fight and winning the fight.

(03:38):
They're there, they're at the walk, they're walking dogs, family kids.

Speaker 4 (03:43):
Yeah, yeah, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
It's a very family friendly event. Fred Bird will be there,
Redbird Louis will have the bubble Bus, Snowcombe Machine, hot
dogs and all these are complementary. We really want people
to rally around this cause it's the largest event in
our region that raises awareness and solely focused on ovarian cancer.

Speaker 4 (04:04):
So you got to like a website, where do you say?
Where do you go? To get signed up for this?

Speaker 2 (04:07):
You can go to sloca a Soloca dot org, slash
FROC Families run for ovarian cancer, and.

Speaker 4 (04:14):
We should also mention you got the best darn MC
in the business. Over the time. We are second best
to Billy.

Speaker 1 (04:19):
He won't be able to make it maybe.

Speaker 2 (04:23):
But he as a firecracker at seven am. That's when
we get started. We love it.

Speaker 4 (04:27):
Sometimes I need a couple of cups of coffee first. Well,
thank you really it's something.

Speaker 1 (04:32):
As you know, I lost my sister and my mother
bolt to a very very important cause and what you
guys do at SLOCA is really incredible. So thank you.

Speaker 2 (04:40):
We are the only over and cancer focused organization and
we are trying to do more to support survivors. They
need support, they need networks, they need events and things
to come together and have camaraderie and lower their stress,
and we're here to do that and to support them
through their journey.

Speaker 3 (04:58):
Save the date again, that's October the twelfth. Rather your friends,
your family, everybody you can get and hopefully we can
just fill the place.

Speaker 2 (05:03):
Sound good absolutely, Tower Grove Park
