Speaker 1 (00:02):
Well, what we need is more common sense, common.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
Sen the youth.
Speaker 3 (00:10):
Breaking down the world's nonsense.
Speaker 4 (00:12):
About how American common sense will see us through with
the common sense of Houston. I'm just pro common sense
for Houston. From Houston dot Com. This is the Jimmy
Barrett Show, brought to you by viewind dot com.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
Now here's Jimmy Barrett. All right, let's start with this today.
Speaker 5 (00:32):
There is a new word that Dictionaries dot Com has added.
It's a new piece of slang, and the word is
actually numbers. The word is six seven. No, not sixty seven.
Six seven. That's it's not six or seven or sixty seven,
it's six seven. I think it's kind of equivalent. Did
(00:58):
your did your parents ever use the term six of
one half dozen of another? Like come see comesa It
could also mean so so yeah, everything's so so yeah six'.
SEVEN i Don't it came from a.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
Song.
Speaker 5 (01:13):
Evidently we played the song in the morning show today
by Skill. Rex that was was Called Dute dute six seven.
SONG i really felt old listening to it BECAUSE i
didn't really understand what the hell they were talking. About
but then, again you, know every generation comes up with
(01:34):
their own. Slang there's not that many terms that had
been around. Forever cool is one of the few TERMS
i think that kind of fits that that's. Cool people
still use the. Term everybody understands what it. Means, uh
he's probably been. AROUND i THINK i looked it up.
ONCE i think it's been around since like the nineteen,
forties and here we are eighty years later and it
(02:00):
still being. Used maybe not as much as it used
to be, used but it's still being. Used and even
if even if kids right now don't use, it if
you use, it they'll still understand what it is you're.
Saying what you can't always say about, Slang we've had
a specific slang from the, seventies from the, eighties the
eighties and when we got into things like, awesome, bogus
(02:22):
a lot of, things a lot of fast times At Ridgebot,
High california type, terms totally that kind of. Stuff so
we were asking our listeners today to remember back to
the terms that they were using when when when we were,
kids you, know, what what were the what were the
terms that we. Used if you were born in the,
(02:43):
sixties you probably said groovy at some point in time or.
Another if you're in the. Seventies then you know that
that that its. Own i'll run through if you here
in a, Second but let's start with some of our,
listeners some of them some of the slang terms that
they used and maybe still, use and if you want
to use in a, seven still free to do.
Speaker 6 (03:00):
So cindy From, dayton the six seven isn't anything really.
Speaker 7 (03:05):
New we used to say six to one half dozen
the other during.
Speaker 8 (03:09):
The Harry Potter, Craze i'm pretty sure the term wicked was,
yeah it's quite a.
Speaker 3 (03:13):
Bad of, course wicked is lying for, awesome, amazing way.
Cool at least that's the way THAT i.
Speaker 9 (03:20):
Interpreted good, Morning jimmy and the. Gang how are you
guys feeling this?
Speaker 2 (03:24):
Morning, Me i'm feeling hunky.
Speaker 9 (03:27):
Dory Uncle Joe crosber was born in nineteen sixty and
that's far out.
Speaker 5 (03:32):
Man there's two phrases THAT i still use to this,
day awesome and.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
Whatever lando From alvin say shiet That I'm i'm not a,
boomer But i'm a GEN. X and the term was
ghostres two. Three and then WHEN i was Taking english
that's a second, language it was musselmano or plus a
minor equals so so there you.
Speaker 5 (03:58):
Go. Happy, yeah there was one of those On november,
first And Happy, halloween do you? Sir the one woman
who brought up awesome and what was?
Speaker 3 (04:10):
That what was the other word she?
Speaker 7 (04:11):
Used?
Speaker 3 (04:12):
Awesome and what was the other?
Speaker 4 (04:14):
One?
Speaker 5 (04:17):
Oh NOW i forget what it was exactly that she.
Said they required most of those, terms those eighties terms in,
particular they required a certain, attitude you know when you said,
them or they didn't work as. Well NOW i was
a child of the, seventies so we used. Groovy groovy
(04:37):
was more of an early, seventies late sixties. Thing bummer
for a bad. Situation do people still use the term?
Bummer can you dig? It which? Meant do you understand
What i'm? Saying foxy was for a very attractive, woman mainly.
WOMEN i think mainly men talked about fuck see. Women the.
(05:02):
Skinny i'm gonna give you the. Skinny i'm gonna tell
you the truth about. That keep on, trucking met hanging
there right on Was, yes peace out was? Goodbye peace? Out.
Speaker 3 (05:16):
Dude jive.
Speaker 5 (05:19):
Turkey now see now WHEN i WHEN i hear jive,
TURKEY i, think why do we think of the? Plant
the Movie airplane of, course The. Airplane the Movie airplane
goes back to, like you, know nineteen eighty, ish and
so there was a lot of you, know seventies ear
ladies terms using that. Movie Space cadet didn't mean somebody
that was going to the Space. Academy it meant somebody
(05:40):
who was in the. Airhead you, know had nothing going on.
Upstairs your clothes were. Threads if something was really cool and,
awesome it was. Bitching give me some skin meant give
me like a high. Five can you dig? It do
you understand the? Skinny AS i, said, ye keep on.
Trucking that. Was that was a big thing back then
(06:02):
take a chill. Pill it just just. Cool it just. Chill,
uh bring back a, lot brings back a lot of,
memories all, right anybody else have some slang terms for?
Speaker 10 (06:12):
Me dave On Lake, conroe my Uncle, lewis we'd be
running triad lines over here for cafeesh and he'd say
is it, jacin which meant is it pulling or? Jerking
but he called it jacon and we use, it uh
AND i use it all the. Time this is. Dom
(06:35):
if someone asked me How i'm, DOING i normally say parody, party.
Speaker 9 (06:39):
Cloudy this Is mike And. CYPRUS i was born in
nineteen sixty. Nine so one word that was famous there
because Of Jessic coley fast times that reached my high
was something was.
Speaker 5 (06:55):
Bitching, yeah which we which we already. Mentioned also rat a.
Radical if you want to talk eighties, stuff, tubular, fabulous
cool or, exciting, gnarly something was extreme or Impressive actually
kind of goes back to the, seventies but it became more
(07:15):
popular in the. Eighties, bodacious, remarkable, impressive or. Attractive, choice
which is a term you use in describing meat, right
prime choice or prime choice men high. Quality prime is
even more high quality obviously if you're talking about. Meat
gag me with a. Spoon bogus Psych remember when you
(07:39):
do that, somebody if you're kidding, somebody or you trick
somebody about something psych oh, man too funny, dude and do. Debt,
yeah we use those. Terms uh, no. Duh you know
when somebody was saying something that was the obvious. DUH
i still do that every now and. AGAIN i want
(08:01):
to be remember THAT i want to be somebody who
wants to be someone they're. Not, yeah we don't use
a lot of those terms. Anymore but it's funny because
once you've used, them you understand what they. Mean maybe
they'll make a, comeback some of. Them all, right quick
little break back with more in a, Moment Jimmy baird
show here at a nine FIFTY. Kprc all, right here
(08:35):
we are another day of the government. SHUTDOWN i am
so tired of talking about, this but you, know Mainly
i'm tired about talking about it from the extent that
is really just not anything all that new to.
Speaker 3 (08:48):
Report you, know no progress has been.
Speaker 5 (08:51):
Made. Zero usually by now you've got somebody willing to
get off the dime and to make a. Compromence democrats
clearly are not interested in doing. That they're still desperately
trying to turn this into A trump. Issue you know That. Trump,
hey he, could he, could he, could he could fund
(09:13):
the food stamp program if he wanted. To there's still
money in the. Budget he could move money around and
give you food. Stamps, uh, listen you know that's your, Constituency,
democrats not, all but the vast majority of your constituency
comes from that. Crowd so why WHY i understand what
(09:33):
you're trying to. Do you're trying to position this, like
the reason why you're not getting Your snap benefits is
because Of. TRUMP i THINK i think even even even
The snap recipients understand that that's maybe not exactly. True
not all of them understand, that BUT i think enough
of them understand that that you're losing the public relations
(09:54):
war on. This and there are two. Things AND i
THINK i said this, yesterday AND i have a tendency
to repeat myself When i'm trying to prove myself, Right
SO i THINK i said. YESTERDAY i think there are
two things that are going to impact a whole lot
of people and are really going to turn the pressure.
Up one of them was The snap. Benefits there's forty two.
Million it still boggles my, mind forty two Million americans
(10:18):
that are On snap benefits getting the food. Stamps and
then air traffic control because a lot of people, fly
especially between now And, christmas there'll be a lot of people.
Flying and if you go to the airport and your
flight's delayed or your flight gets canceled because there's not
enough air traffic controllers that have to shut that, down
then you're gonna be. Angry you're gonna be angry at,
(10:38):
Somebody Chuck, schumer though in a Keem jefferies are still
trying to turn this around and Blame. TRUMP i don't
think it's something that's going to ultimately, work but they're
still doing their love best. Here they are doing that
with some reaction on the five From Dana perino On.
Speaker 11 (10:54):
Saturday for the first time In american, history a, vicious heartless.
President it's cutting off food. Stamps this president is a.
Flyar he says there's no money to provide food stamps
because of the. Shutdown That's Donald trump is trying to
weaponize hunger to fresher people On Capitol.
Speaker 12 (11:14):
Hill the dams are banking On republicans getting the blame
if food banks start over. Flying but CNN's data guru,
says not so.
Speaker 13 (11:23):
Fast Republican congress is net approv rating versus pre. Shutdown
it's rallying the, base for. Sure look at, this the
net approval rating up twelve points versus pre. Shutdown but
it's not just with the, base it's also.
Speaker 9 (11:34):
With the middle of the.
Speaker 13 (11:34):
Electorate look at this among, independents it's up eight points as.
Well so we've got a situation here Where republicans with
the shutdown are actually rallying their. Base but it's also
something that's not hurting them with the folks in the
middle of. Anything it's helping them with folks in them.
Speaker 12 (11:47):
ALL i think The republicans have a very simple. Message
The democrats shut down the. Government The democrats could reopen the.
Government that's the bottom. Line SO i think it was
a little jarring this morning to realize that one in
Eight americans are still needing the supplemental nutritional suge. Supplement,
now that is SOMETHING i think post, shutdown maybe we
(12:10):
should all talk about.
Speaker 3 (12:11):
It you should look.
Speaker 8 (12:11):
Into who's getting, him what proportion of the party they belong.
Speaker 3 (12:16):
To also the people that are that are.
Speaker 12 (12:18):
Desperate that do need, It, yeah help them figure out,
away like with some more economic, Growth like where's that?
Plan SO i do think the polling shows that it's Hurting.
Democrats it's actually Hurting, schumer and his pulling numbers were
low to begin. With it's sort of ironic too that The,
Democrats i'll say That trump is a want to be,
dictator he's a, fascist and they say that he needs
(12:42):
to share no. Kings but yet now they're saying he's
the only one that could reopen the.
Speaker 3 (12:46):
Government they could actually reopen the.
Speaker 12 (12:48):
Government they could do it. Tomorrow Senator thune had that
was the most ANIMATED i had ever seen, that very,
Calm midwestern. Guy he's. Mad he, said we've tried to
do what they want to do thirteen. Times there was
a senator on today that, said don't let The democrats vote,
piecemeal AND i think that that's the right.
Speaker 5 (13:04):
Tact, YEAH i would agree With Dana prino on that
you get no peace mal, voting you either open the
government or your. Don't you're not going to selectively fund
what you want to, fund at least not with federal tax.
Dollars the president has gotten some help as far as
funding the, military but you know that's a temporary situation,
too and that is likely to run out here pretty
(13:25):
soon as far as the military getting their. Paychecks and
if you've got the military not getting paid and they're
certainly going to be Blaming democrats for, that you have
air traffic control that is, sketchy and you are missing
flights or having delayed, flights and you have forty two
million people like getting their snap, benefits then that's a
(13:48):
lot of. Pressure that is a lot of. Pressure something
is going to have to. Give and by the, Way
i'm not the only one who thinks that the two
most important, things And i've been talking about this for
a couple of, days but the two most important things
in this are air traffic control AND. Snap those are
the things that will break the back of the. Shutdown
(14:10):
the people At fox evidently agree with me on. That
here's the report On fox on the two metrics to
watch with the government.
Speaker 14 (14:17):
Shutdown, sandra there are two barometers to, WATCH snap benefits
and air traffic. Control forty two Million americans depend ON.
Snap democrats Say President trump used emergency authority to MAINTAIN
snap during the government shutdown in twenty eighteen and twenty.
Speaker 3 (14:34):
Nineteen it's not a pain. Point american people are the
ones filling.
Speaker 8 (14:39):
This they're not eating and this is disgusting that in
the richest country In, america when there's five billion dollars
sitting in front Of President Donald, trump he's cut off
the food programs and now The republican whip is not
allowing the vote on a bill that would make it.
Speaker 3 (14:52):
Happen there's no, excuse.
Speaker 14 (14:54):
But republicans are trying to boomerang the food issue On.
Democrats they're also raging about air SAFETY Gop Montana Senator
Tim sheehe is a.
Speaker 3 (15:04):
PILOT a safety is not one.
Speaker 1 (15:07):
Issue safety is an accident chain that begins with little
things missed at the, beginning and as that snowball rolls
down the, hill we're going to see more issues arise.
Speaker 3 (15:14):
Here it's not just going to be. Cancellations we're going
to start to see safety.
Speaker 14 (15:17):
Issues there are still no talks to end the, shutdown
but right now bi partisan lawmakers are starting to evaluate
when the shutdown might. End it is thought that Mid
november could be an inflection, point especially as federal paychecks
dry up and food aid is.
Speaker 15 (15:35):
SCARCE i Think Vetter's day is probably D, day meaning
that that would be the second full paycheck that they,
miss and that's when you're going to break the, SYSTEM i,
Fear and after having spoken to air traffic, CONTROLLERS i
fear that what happens is they don't get a paycheck
On november, eleventh and then when The democrats come to
their senses and regain their humanity and think everybody opens back,
(15:57):
up there's just gone all.
Speaker 5 (15:59):
Right so right About venter's date kind of being the
date to look out for that's about that's what a
week and a, half about ten days, away about a
week and a half. Away so if a week and
a half comes and goes and we still don't we
still have a government, shutdown then then we'll see what's
next on the agenda. Here that'll be interesting in the.
(16:20):
Meantime Senator John. KENNEDY i try to never miss an
opportunity to share audio From Senator John kennedy BECAUSE i
just love listening to. Him Senator CORNFUCIUS i like to
call him because he's got the wisdom Of confucius and
they you, know but it's been. Countrified Thus. Cornfucius Senator
kennedy on what really is fueling this position on the
(16:45):
government shutdown On. Democrats they're doing it because they're. ANGRY i,
mean that's a pretty simple. Explanation they're doing it because they're.
Angry The democrats are. Angry they're angry for two. Reasons
they're angry Because trump won the. Election The american people.
Speaker 1 (17:05):
Spoke My democratic colleagues need to just drink a big
old glass of get over it and let's move. On
they're Mad number, two they're mad that The american people
are mad about the. Shutdown it was so. NEEDLESS i
voted thirteen times to open government back. Up The democrats
(17:28):
have voted thirteen times to keep it shut. Down they
don't want to pay food, stamps they don't want to
pay the. Military they want to use us as leverage
to gain more more money to. Spend Senator, schumer my, colleague, eagerly,
greedily wanted to become the face of the. SHUTDOWN i
(17:49):
was looking at a poll today What american people think
Of Senator. Schumer it was an economist you gov, poll
which is very left of center The american. People in
The american people's, Opinion Senator schumer is A he's a
wet match in a dark. Cave he polls right up
(18:09):
there with CLUBBING babyskei. Seals he's got a thirty percent approval,
rating a sixty percent disapproval, rating and ten percent of
folks polls just didn't want to pause their video games to.
Answer it's not. Working The american people may not Read
(18:29):
aristotle every, day but they get. It this is not
a policy shut. Down this is a political. Shutdown AND
i keep waiting for My democratic colleges to come to their.
Speaker 3 (18:39):
Senses you'll be waiting a long, Time.
Speaker 5 (18:42):
Sir you can't come to your senses when you don't
have any senses to come. To all, right we'll talk
a little bit more about. This by the, way is
this an? OPPORTUNITY i still think it is an. Opportunity
that's an opportunity for The trump, administration especially as it
relates to THE foodstam. Program we need to go through
The foodstam program like a fine tooth. Comb we need
(19:03):
to find anybody in there that is illegally getting snap
benefits or is Selling snap. Benefits we need to find
these people and weed them out of the. System there's
no reason why forty two Million americans should be getting food,
stamps and there's no reason why anybody who is not
A United states citizen should be getting food. Stamps James
(19:23):
quintaro from The Texas Public Policy foundation joins us next
back with more in a. Moment Jimmy Barrett show here
An am nine FIFTY. Kprc all, Right i'll bet this
(19:52):
sort of the last word for today, anyway and government shut.
Down we Had James quintaro on our morning show today
ON ktrh, early SO i heard it's like at five
point fifty two in the, morning you, know towards the
beginning of the. Show so now now this a more reasonable.
Hour if you missed, it you get a chance to
hear it. Again we were talking about the government shutdown
and the opportunities And republicans sticking to their guns and
(20:15):
all the other things they go along with. It here's
my conversation With James quintaroll from The Texas Public Policy.
FOUNDATION i know that a lot of These democrats don't
Think americans are blaming them for the, shutdown but the
polling data tells us something.
Speaker 9 (20:28):
Different, YEAH i think The good, Morning, jimmy and, YEAH
i think you're. Right the polling data very much bends
against The democrats in this. Instance most people recognize that
The schumer shutdown is at the feet Of Senate democrats
who have voted against reopening the government on more than
a dozen occasions, now and because they've done, that a
(20:53):
lot Of americans and a lot of people are getting
ready to see their food stamp assistance begin to turn
off On. Saturday. Now states some states are saying that
they're going to step up and use state funding to
maybe close the gap a little, bit but without federal,
aid a lot of these programs are in danger. Now from,
(21:17):
there there's really two problems, HERE i, think from my vantage,
point one is the policy, problem and that really gets
into who's receiving these food stamps and. Why but there's
also a cultural crisis that this brings to. Light and
WHAT i mean is that what you're seeing throughout is
(21:39):
really this sense of entitlement from, people and there's some
really troubling threats of violence that are beginning to emerge
from people saying that you, know what if and when
these food stamps go, away we're going to just march
into stores and take what we want because we're in
(22:00):
titled to these. Things and SO i think there's really
two big problems to emerge from From Senate democrats refusal
to reopen the.
Speaker 5 (22:08):
Government you, Know i've been kind of wondering out loud
all this, Week James, quintero whether or not this is
an opportunity For republicans to really get tough on reform
when it comes to these government. Agencies there are forty
two Million, americans over forty two Million americans who are
on the food stamp program that are getting snap. Benefits
(22:29):
it seems to me that this is the perfect opportunity
to tighten that. Up you can't tell me that there
are forty two million people in this country that need
to have these benefits in order to be able to
feed their.
Speaker 9 (22:38):
Families, yeah you're, right you know there are forty two
million people receiving food stamp. Benefits it's unclear to me
exactly how many non citizens are included in that, figure
but some of the latest data we have suggests that
they're at least one point five million non citizens who
(23:00):
receive food stamp assistance in twenty twenty.
Speaker 5 (23:02):
Two why why do we all why do we allow
non citizens to get food? Stamps how is? That how
did that become a benefit for people who are not
citizens of this. Country they may be here, legally but
they're not a.
Speaker 9 (23:12):
Citizen, yeah it's because we've allowed our welfare programs to
expand far beyond what they were intended. For and then
we have some progressive activists In congress who've then expanded
the reach of those programs to everyone and. Anyone and you,
(23:33):
KNOW i mean it's with Today's. Democrats it's not hard
to see how that how these programs have gotten so
far out of. Control these are the very same people
who want single payer healthcare provided to everyone and anyone
in our. Country and, so you, know we have to
revisit this these programs in full and really do a
(23:58):
comprehensive analysis of who's getting the benefits and. Why by the,
way those those one point five million non citizens Cost
american taxpayers four point two billion dollars again in twenty twenty.
Two so this is you, know this is substantial aid
that's being taken away from The american.
Speaker 5 (24:14):
People. Yeah, well LIKE i, said this would be seems
to me to be a great opportunity if The democrats
seem to think they have, leverage what about the Leverage
republicans potentially have for changing some of these.
Speaker 3 (24:25):
Programs.
Speaker 9 (24:27):
Yeah you, know one of the things that that's really
disheartening about this whole thing Is republicans control almost all
the levers of power in the federal, government and yet
we still cannot get welfare spending under. Control and it's
taken a government shut down to really empower The trump
administration in a unique way to finally put the brakes
(24:50):
on a lot of this. Spending, so you, Know i'm
not it's not entirely encouraging that this is the way
we have to go about attack the. Problem but here we,
are and so you, know perhaps there is some silver
lining to the government, shutdown which is we get to
call attention to all of this, waste, fraud abuse and
(25:12):
speak up on behalf of The american tax.
Speaker 5 (25:14):
PAYER i wonder if, anybody including The, president has said
To schumer And, jeffries if you don't get the government
back open, again we are going to OVERHAUL snap and
we are going to root out anybody who is cheating the,
system and we are going to look at what we
(25:36):
can do to get that program under. CONTROL i wonder
if that would be enough to get things off the.
DIME i wonder if that would be enough to Get
democrats to, say, okay, okay all, right we're gonna open.
This we're gonna open it back, up because at some
point in, TIME i think they have to realize that
they're the ones that are getting the brunt of, This
they're the ones that are getting the majority of the,
(25:57):
blame and try as they may to try to turn
the blame. AROUND i, mean EVEN cnn IN, msnbc you,
know these reliable ally of media outlets are putting it
on The democrats at this. Point so they've got to
be feeling the. Pressure they've got to be feeling the,
pressure and at some point in, time you got to
(26:18):
realize what we're doing is really not. Working we need
to come up with something. Else all, right here's the,
story completely unrelated to, politics which is, good, right but
it's something THAT i find fascinating and certainly worth talking,
about and that is the. Penny as you, know we're
no longer producing the. Penny President trump, Said i'm not
(26:38):
going to produce something that costs more to make than
what it's. Worth it cost four cents to make a,
penny and a penny's worth a. Penny so we are
supposedly have at least that retailers are telling us they
have a penny. Shortage, now the THING i find a
little hard to believe about that is how many of
us actually use cash anymore to buy? Things very? Few
(27:02):
how many, RETAILERS i, Mean i'm sure they have some cash,
customers but the vast majority of people put it on
a debit card or a credit. Card so how does
a penny shortage affect? Them, well they claim that what
they want to do because the penny is going, away
is they want to either round up or round, down
although it's unclear to me if they're rounding. Down i've
(27:26):
seen a piece of evidence that they're rounding up to
the nearest, nickel BUT i have not seen the evidence
that they're rounding. Down and we even had a local
story of a guy who went shopping at A kroger
store and he looked at his receipt and it showed
a Round it showed a round penny of two. Cents
(27:49):
in this, case they rounded, it rounded it up so
that the benefit went to. Him he didn't have to other,
words he wasn't being charged two cents to get the
the nearest. Nickel he was getting two cents back to
get to the nearest. Nickel but there's no, Warning nobody
said anything about. It the only reason why he even
(28:11):
realized that it happened is he had the. Receipt here's
the report from our television PARTNER Kprc too And Amy.
Speaker 7 (28:16):
Davis we know that every penny adds, up so we
wanted to check this out for. You if you Or
steven sent his receipt from The kroger Off highway, six
you can see at the bottom it says penny rounding
and it added two cents in this, case giving two
extra cents to the. Customer cutler is rounding to the
nearest nickel because of a nationwide shortage of pennies at some.
(28:39):
Stores earlier this, Year President trump ordered THE Us Treasury
department to stop making pennies because it costs nearly four
cents to make just one. Penny we Asked kroger if
it will always be rounding in the customer's.
Speaker 3 (28:52):
FAVOR a spokesperson sent us this vague.
Speaker 7 (28:54):
Statement we continue to assess the impact of THE Us
treasury's decision to end penny, production and if using cash for,
payment we kindly ask customers to consider providing exact. Change
kroger will continue to accept pennies for, payment So kroger
isn't ready to put any details in. Writing The Retail
Industry Leaders association says retailers across the country are trying
(29:17):
to figure out how to adjust to this change and
the shortage of, pennies which has happened very. Quickly they're
advocating For congress and the administration to provide guidance to
how rounding should. Work another thing to look. FOR A
congress dot gov post about penny production says even though
most transactions are electronic now with debit and credit, cards
(29:38):
merchants may still do penny rounding to keep pricing.
Speaker 3 (29:41):
Consistent so.
Speaker 5 (29:45):
Do you think that retailers should have to post in
the store if they're. ROUNDING i think they. Should i'm
going to. Go i'm Sure i'll be At. Kroger, Well
i'll make it a point to be A kroger sometime this,
weekend And i'll be sure to check my bill to
see if rounding is occurring at all The croker, stores
(30:06):
or at least at That kroger. Store and what do
you make of the rationale that we're not just rounding for.
Cash we're rounding no matter what you're, doing just to
make it simple and. Equitable you buy into. That why
SHOULD i have to be rounded up or down If
i'm using a debit card that we're talking about electronic.
(30:29):
Pennies there's no shortage of electronic. Pennies all, right back
with aut, Moment Jimmy, vertow here a, name nine fifty K.
Prc all, right let's do one more global story for.
(30:55):
Today then maybe we'll talk a little bit About, halloween
Because halloween is, tomorrow or by the, Way i'm off
tomorrow For. Halloween i'm doing it so THAT i can
stay up late enough to pass out the, candy WHICH
i thoroughly enjoy. DOING i know that sounds, strange BUT
i thoroughly enjoy doing. IT i enjoy seeing really young
(31:18):
kids in their. COSTUMES i enjoy giving teenagers grief if
they show up at my. Door by the, way if
you are a high, schooler there's no way you're getting
any candy for. Me that is too old a trick or.
Treat you shouldn't be out. There you don't need to
be eating all that. Candy leave it for the. Kids
(31:38):
trick or treating is for young, kids you, know for
elementary school and. Younger IF i think you're in the
seventh grade or, OLDER i may ask you how old
you are and if the answer is, thirteen because twelve's
my Cutof if you're older than, Twelve i'm not giving
you anything for trick or, Treating i'm. Sorry but for
(31:58):
those who do meet the, criteria, Yes jimmy has. Rules
for those who do meet the, criteria you are rewarded
with a full sized candy. Bar not everybody does, that
AND i think the reason WHY i do it is
for nostalgia because WHEN i was a, kid AND i
go back far enough that WHEN i was a, kid
(32:20):
that's what you. Got you got. Full when you got
candy bars from, somebody you got regular sized candy. Bars
they didn't make miniatures back. Then they didn't make the
anybity little tiny little. Things you, know the little tiny
box of milk duds has got like four milk duds in. It,
no if you got milk, duds you got a box
of milk. Duds you, know you got enough in there
(32:41):
to pull out every tooth in your, mouth or at least every.
Filling and that always sat with, me you. Know and
when we would go out trick or. Treating that's the
other thing that this changed so much from WHEN i
was a, kid when we would go out trick or.
Treating of, course parents didn't worry about us back then
the way we all worry about our kids. Now. Uh
the only rule was that you had to be back
(33:03):
by a certain. Time AND i think that time IS
i want IS i want to recall it was fairly,
late and they wanted to know that you're only going
to be trick or treating in your. Neighborhood BUT i
lived in a neighborhood WHEN i was growing up where
we probably had six seven hundred. Houses it was a big.
Neighborhood so if you really wanted, to you, know get
(33:23):
all the candy you could, get you were gonna you're
gonna be out there walking for a. While you're gonna
be out there. Hiking and we didn't buy the. Way
we didn't carry like a little pumpkin or. Bag we carried.
Pillowcases that's. Yes we put our candy in. Pillowcases and
we didn't come home until the pillowcase was, full until
we couldn't close the pillow case. Anymore that's how long
(33:45):
we stayed out. There So i'm taking taking it off
for tomorrow SO i could and by the, way back
to the full sized candy bars for just a. Second
the reason WHY i do it is BECAUSE i enjoy.
IT i enjoy looking at the expression on the basis
of these young kids when they get a full sized candy.
Bar because they're going to my neighbors and they're getting
(34:06):
the little mini. Bars they're not getting the full sized candy.
Bars they only get that at my, house all. Right so,
Anyway i'll be off For. Halloween let's do one more story.
Here whether you know it or, not or whether you
care or. Not City. Council Houston City council has approved
the sixteen million dollar homeless Super. Hub here's that, report
(34:27):
also for our television PARTNER kprc.
Speaker 16 (34:29):
Two there's been no community.
Speaker 3 (34:31):
ENGAGEMENT i caught up With Scott.
Speaker 6 (34:33):
Singleton he lives in the second, ward just around the
corner where the city will transform this building on four
Nineteen Emancipation avenue into a homeless.
Speaker 3 (34:41):
Superhub the motion passes On.
Speaker 6 (34:44):
Wednesday all but one City council member voted to greenlight the.
Speaker 3 (34:48):
PROJECT i can guarantee it that we're not going to Fail.
Speaker 6 (34:51):
Mayor John, whitmeyers how did the project as a first
step in solving the homeless problem In? Houston what got
you on the streets in the first?
Speaker 3 (34:58):
Place bad?
Speaker 6 (35:00):
Decisions SO i Asked David, simon A houston man who
was on the, streets what he thinks about the. Project
do you think a lot of homeless people will take
advantage of the resources that they will offer here at
the super? Hub of, course But david tells me he
also understands the concerns of neighbors in the.
Speaker 3 (35:17):
AREA i think it's going to be hal to.
Speaker 6 (35:21):
Maintain witmeyer, says A houston police substation with eight officers
and a sergeant will be on.
Speaker 16 (35:27):
Site that's a good, thing but, again the neighborhood doesn't
really feel like it's been given any kind of.
Speaker 6 (35:37):
Input scott also tells me his biggest concern is the
sixteen million dollar price tag and the annual operating cost
of ten to fourteen. Million what is your message to
those people who are, saying, well this is a solution
to solving the homeless problem here In, houston.
Speaker 16 (35:53):
Put it in your, neighborhood because what we've found is
that many of the people that all are expressing that
sentiment are people that live in other areas of town
where homelessness is not part of daily.
Speaker 5 (36:09):
Life well, YEAH i mean that's the old not in
my backyard argument that that argument gets made all the, time,
right you, know that's a great, Idea just don't build
it WHERE i. Live here's what tells me whether or
not this is a success or, not and that is
will it will remove the problem of the homeless people
hanging out Around Diykin park or any other areas that
(36:32):
are just out out and. About there's nothing that's going
to keep these people from going there and getting whatever
they want to, get or sleeping there when it's really
super cold or, whatever but then heading right back. Out
most of the people who are out on the streets
are out on the streets because they want to be
out on the. STREETS i love that homeless guy's explanation
of you know why we're, homeless and the answer was bad.
(36:53):
DECISIONS i, mean you can't argue with, that. RIGHT a
lot of bad, decisions whether it was a substance abuse
use or whatever it, was a lot of bad decisions
is generally what leads to a homeless. Situation all, right,
listen you all have a Great. Halloween we'll have the
best stuff for you. Tomorrow i'll see You monday, morning
bright nearly five am on News radio seven forty k
(37:15):
t R. H we'll be back here at four ON
am nine FIFTY. Kprc
