I hope you were all doing phenomenalthis week. I know that it aired
last week me and Dave interviewing WarrenHaynes from Government Mule with the release of

(04:40):
their new album, and was veryexcited to be a part of that.
And this week we got a littlea different topic about our songs this week.
But I must say before I getinto our topic that ever since I
saw The Devil's Rejects part of theRob Zombie trilogy with the House of a
Thousand Corpses, Devil Rejects and Threefrom Hell, Ever since I've seen The

(05:02):
Devil's Rejects, that song, thatsong an Freebird always take me back to
their This song was of course inthe opening sequence, and then Freebird in
the final final sequence. I won'tsay what happens in that sequence because I
don't want to ruin it for anybodythat maybe has not seen the movie.
But I do love those movies. And those songs as old and as classic

(05:26):
and as entrenched as they are inmy brain. For whatever reason, the
indelible impact that the imagery made incombineand combination with those songs that always plays
in my head. Excuse me,but this week our song selections are talking
about traveling, the rambling, traveling, nomadic thing that, for whatever reason

(05:48):
seems to be and go kind ofhand in hand with the artistic musical types.
Is it something that is learned aspart of the business, where it
is something that is part of youor part of the artist, and as
an aid in them, and soit goes hand in hand. Yes,

(06:10):
there have been the artists that aren'tnecessarily as comfortable in the public eye.
But there's a there's a long mythosinto music, all the way back into
the blues and even before of thetraveling minstrel the traveling troubadour h and whatnot.
And at one point we may havewritten it off as part of necessity
traveling from town to town to makeyou know, money, because there's only

(06:33):
so many times people are going topay you to hear the songs. Um
kind of the earliest form of touring, if you will. But there's also
a lot of songs about the kindof tortuous relationship that happens between the artist
and the constant desire to be onthe road anyway. I digress He's your

This is the Outlaw DA Show onKTRC nine fifty. I'll cannot changes hide

(09:18):
whisp I I well feat makes youfeel, don't you be going? Mister

(12:56):
breeze, mister breeze? Indeed, that's right a Leonard Skinnerd's version of the
JJ Kale class so it could forcemost people know the Leonard skinnerd version,
but it's actually a JJ Kale songcall Me the Breeze, and that so
well articulates the mentality that goes alongwith most artistic types. They have to

(13:18):
ramble, they have to travel, and there seems to be from all the
musicians that I know and that I'vetalked to over the years and played and
toured and recorded with, it isa it's a constant tear. When you're
home, you're thinking of the road, and when you're on the road,
you're thinking of home, and younever feel like you are necessarily where you
are at that moment. I don'tknow if it's the horse of the cart,

(13:41):
if that's part of the if that'slike the penalty for the artistic mindset,
or if that is what puts youin that mindset, and not to
say that sadness or that it's allI mean. Granted, being on the
road is great, you know ithas it's it's great fun, and if
you're getting paid to do it,it's even better. There is a given
take to that lifestyle. Yet itseems to not only be what happens,

(14:05):
but it seems to be the inspirationfor a lot of songs about it,
almost romancing the road, as ifthe road was yet another person that the
musician is in a relationship. I'min time and hold ivan going to motion.

(14:39):
Its means to me walking around livinga dream. Many time I take
till the truth comes. Another songis sweet It Up one. Now you

(15:03):
ain't living dream, I can makeun on the old don't do it.
You ain't got no old dream.I don't mean changing my strings. Hold
the dirt, don't hurt where Ithink what they don't have to God,

(15:24):
damn thing sitting run away to die. We'll I've been waiting on. Ain't

alone wears crokat smile, staring downon the chaos. He stret sit side.

(16:30):
If you ain't having burn into mada little while mamma's gone out away,
she thanks muss. He's over readingand pumping my fair. You ain't

(17:14):
living a dream like you make outof the old party. Can't be when
you ain't got no dream. Idon't need taking my scream coast dot.
Don't hurt where I sang, oh, I don't hurt. That ain't siting

(17:37):

but Brody Lane come into town, several other acts and all of those
with our old buddy outlaw Dave andErskine Entertainment, So make sure you're checking
out the show's going and supporting livemusic in Houston. And we continue our

(19:18):
conversation about the road as the mistressof the artistic soul. Why so many
musicians feel the call of travel?I know that again from personal experience.
I've always felt the nomadic call, and at a certain point in my life.
More recently it's it's been a differentnomadic call, but it's always there.

(19:42):
It's always the you long for home, yet you never feel at home
anywhere, so you kind of wantto travel. You want to go do
things, and it's not always aboutbeing on vacation. Sometimes it's it's like
a drive that makes you feel likeyou've got to make the next town.
I had this in my in inthree different phases of my life, one

(20:07):
as a young musician, one whenI was a professional wrestler, and then
again when I was a musician againtraveling and it's like I lived to make
the date. You know, Ihave to fill that calendar. I have
to get on the road. Ihave to see the white line, the
long white line. And it justmade sense. And for me, it

(20:29):
was easier to manage a suitcase ina car, you know it was.
It was for some people that's notthe easier life to manage. But for
me it made more sense. Itwas cut and dry. I showed up,
I did my job, I gotpaid. I went to the next
town, and I did it again. And I did that as many nights
in a row as I physically couldor that could be allowed. And I

(20:49):
know that in my own writing, for some reason, the road gets referred
to as a mistress quite a lot, and I guess it just makes sense,
because, as Robert roll King says, the road does go on forever
and the party never ends. Shewas a waitress at the only Johnt in

(21:18):
town. She had her reputation asa girl who bitter around down mainstreat after
midnight, brand me back six,a fresh one hanging from her lips,
a bit between the legs. She'dride down to the river and meet with
all the friends The roll goes onforever, and the party never sunny.

(21:45):
It wasn't loner over and the red. He was going in the navy,
but couldn't fast the ten, soI hung around town. He sold a
little pod, the log cop whenthe sunny one day got come and he
was back in business when they sethim free again. The road goes on

(22:07):
forever, and the party never in. Sunday is playing. Ain't ball out
the john where Shared works with somedrunken out of town, or put his
hand up Sharry skirt. Sunday tookhis puculate the drunk out on the floor
stuff the dollar in A dead Johnwalked on out the door. She's running

(22:33):
right behind him for reaching before hishand. And the road goes on forever,
and the party never in. Theyjumped in dude pick up. Sunday
jammed down and get sunny. LookDead Share said, let's get home out

(22:56):
of him. The star riding bubble. The love was in the east.
The sun was setting on when theyreached by and his beads that got a
battail by the water at a fourpm Bay Jean and the road goes over
the river and the parties ever Theysoon nine out of money, but Sunny

(23:22):
new Man who knew some Cuban refugeesand depth in the contraband, and Sunny
met the Cuban in a house juststopped the route with the briefcase full of
money and a pistol in his food. The cards were on the table when
the log came busted in and theroad goes on the river and the party

(23:44):
never hit humans was grabbed the goodies, Sunny and grabbed the jack. He
broke the bathroom window and climbed onout to buy Charry drove the pick up
through the alley on the side wherea long mantack the sonny and was reading
him his right. She stepped outin the alley with a single shot fourteen.

(24:10):
The road glows on the river, and the party never had they left
the long Man line. They madethem get away, got back to the
motel just before the break day.Sonny gave her all the money and it

(24:33):
flew a little kiss. If theyasked Han, this happened to say,
I forced into this. She watchedhim as the tails disappeared around the bend
the road doors on the river, and the party ever in miss Main Street
after midnight, just like it wasbefore. Twenty one months later, at

(24:59):
the local grocery store, Sharon buysa paper and a cold six pack of
Bear. The headlines read the sunnyIt's going to the chair. She pulled
back on the main street in hernew Mercedes Bears. The over goes on
forever and the party never ends, and we're back. It is I see

(26:03):
it is. Meet as Professor Alwith your musicology one on one for this
week, talking about the lure ofthe road and the musicians who have that
forever Mistress in the long white line, the artist, the artistic personality that
draws itself to that or is itsomething way more? Is it more of
a human condition? There are manymany tales of the lone cowboy, the

(26:27):
lone samurai, the lone traveler. It goes all the way back to the
Odyssey, the Iliada and the Odyssey. It goes back to early nomadic tribes.
We've had this desire to travel, even sometimes when it doesn't make sense,
and not everybody feels it, butthere's definitely those of us that feel
the call of the road. Again, from personal experience, I have found

(26:49):
in my later life a happier balancebetween my road travels and and kind of
compartmentalizing how I spend my time onthe road and how I view it,
and and separating it so that wheni'm home, i'm home, and when
I'm on the road, I'm onthe road. And I think a lot
of people figure that out if theycan stay mentally healthy enough to do it.

(27:12):
And I do say stay mentally healthyenough, because the road also does
take a toll um I know thattrying to many many stories that I that
I cannot tell on here or thatI will not publish. You'll only be
able to hear them if we're ata bar, and it's person a person
occurred because myself and the others ofus that were on the road, we're

(27:34):
just looking to stay entertained, youknow, because it's it's not as glamorous
as you think. It's not likeyou get there and then you get to
go to do the touristy things orget to relax, or you know.
It's I've seen. I've seen alot of cities and a lot of towns,
and what I've seen is the alleyswhere we load in and out.
You know, you're in the band, you can load in through the kitchen

(27:56):
or whatever. But I think alot of bands, and of course your
mandatory kiss reference. But if youlook at Paul and Jean, if you
look at you know, Motley Cruenow except for the infighting with me,
but if you look a lot ofthem now, they've figured out the business
of being on the road and they'vethey've kind of toned down the other stuff.
They have their parties and all that, but they have people in place,

(28:17):
they have they're making money and andI think that just after a while,
you either either it eat you upor you figure it out how to
survive it. And who knows.I mean, now that I have my
happy balance, who knows if thatbalance would have been reached had I attained
a higher level of success than Idid. But you know, one we

(28:40):
can only speculate at this point. All I know is that it's good to
see so many of our heroes kindof come out of the darkness and now
health in a much more healthy way, balance their life on the road.
How Law Dave is Your Friend OnKPRC nine fifty. This is the Outlaw

(29:03):
of the Eve Show on KPRC ninefifty. Old Professor Al share in truth,
wisdom, insight, and of coursewe extend accolades to his sharing of
his stories, wisdom, experience, and perspective each and every week his musicology
You Want to Want with Professor Ala, which is Albert Durco, Alburquerque,

(29:26):
Albatrost, al Hayes, Ladies andgentlemen, good morning class. User called,

(30:11):
that's right. Well, I wishI had my picture on the Rolling
Stone today, and I wish theTheme Enquirer the spread a rumor that I

(30:41):
was gay. Well, I wishI had some buddies, some movie stars
and such, because I probably wouldn'tworry about the two of us as much.

(31:12):
I spend all my money cavearing cocaine, and I would not remember how
you broke my heart today. Youknow, I wish I had a supermodel,

(31:52):
so skin, so wild and awager sin the vibe she says she's
carrying my child when I drive downSunset Boulevard, my hand blowing in the

(32:19):
wind, and I'd stop a fancyrestaurant and it finally left me in.
I spent all my money heavy ain'tcocaine, and I would not remember how

(32:52):
you broke my heart. Yeah,I wish I had my picture with the

(34:00):
Rolling Stones today, and I wishthe theme inquired, we spread a rumor
that I was gay. Well,I wish I knew a movie star,

(34:23):
someone like Charlie Sheen was that he'dhang out with Kat o'kaylin. Well,
I guess he hanging out with me. That's been my Monther caviar roll game,

(34:55):
and I would not remember the oneand only Charlie Robeson, an excellent

(35:22):
songwriter and very underrated or not appreciatedenough. With Sunset Boulevard, there a
Texas boy, I believe, Iknow him and his brother have written many,
many good songs that I like, and he somehow seems to capture the
story of each one of his songs. But as we go back to talking

(35:45):
about the road, the call ofthe road, and why musicians and artists
feel the need to travel, oneof the questions is why do they feel
the need to write about it?And I feel that my speculation and my
personal experiences is that though not allsongs are autobiographical, every song is a

(36:06):
little autobiographical. M It is ourtherapy to get it out there and share
it with the audience. I onceheard it said that an artist's job is
to pour their heart on the stageevery night, dare the audience to step
on it and walk away better forthe experience, And nothing gives you that
experience more than another town on theroad. It is I, it is

(36:30):
meat as Professor al this has beenyour musicology one on one for the Outlaw
Dave Show, and until next time. I hope each and every one of
you has a fantastic week. Sabindid Sabon comment, let's got won't trying
