(08:18):
Oh fantastic, all right, wegot a full health and before I

guy. He does a musicology segmentevery week on the program So and Government
Mule is his hero. He namedthe band after one of the lyrics.
This is this is his big day, this is his bob Mitza. Oh

(08:39):

it all right? Well and OutlawedDay, will you be talking as well?

and Outlawed Day with him. Hey, Warren, how are you good?

(09:01):
How are you guys? Good?Good? We're going to start in our
segment right now. If that's okaywith you? Sure? Good evening,
everybody, It is I, itis he, it is me, It
is Professor Al with your musicology oneon one segment for the Outlaw Dave and
Lightning does indeed strike twice. Ihad a once of a lifetime opportunity several
months ago to interview one of mypersonal heroes, mister Warren Haynes, and

(09:24):
today I get to interview him yetagain. How are you doing, Warren,
I'm doing great man. Thanks. So the new album Piece Like a
River has just been released, andthis is a continued evolution of the Government
Mule legacy and mythlist here. Well, we made Piece Like a River at

(09:48):
the same time that we made HeavyLoad Blues, which you and I talked
about during lockdown. I had writtenso much material that I wanted to get
in the studio and record as muchas possible, and obviously we couldn't travel,
we couldn't tour, so the onlyway we could think of to kind

(10:09):
of not go crazy was to makeplay records at the same time. So
we found a studio that we couldset up in two different rooms, a
small room where we made the bluesrecord and a big room where we made
a Piece Like a River, andcompletely different equipment, completely different setups in
each room. So we would goin around noon and record to songs for

(10:35):
Piece Like a River tim about ninepm, and then take a break,
get a bite to eat, andthen move next door to the little blues
room. And play blues the restof the night, and that was our
schedule every day for several weeks. It definitely was what we needed. You

(10:56):
know, I don't know that Iwould want to do that all the time,
but it was perfect, And especiallyafter working on the piece Like a
River songs all day and racking ourbrains. There's a lot of complex arrangements
and stuff on this new record, and then when we were done with that,
we would just kind of shut ourbrains off and go next door and
play blues for the rest of thenight. And it was just an interesting

(11:22):
concept that turned out to be theperfect thing. And a piece like a
River, you collaborated with a varietyof artists. When you talk about the
complexity of the arrangements and the composition, what was the inspiration for dealing with
so many different artists. Well, you know, this is our twelfth studio
record. Through the years, we'vekind of enjoyed sharing the stage and sometimes

(11:45):
the studio with friends, collaborating asa big part of what we've done.
That goes all the way back tothe beginning. If a song cries after
something and it's possible, then whynot give it a try? When as
an example, our friend Billy Gibbons. He and I've been doing a lot
of stuff together recently, and Iwrote this tune called shake Our Way Out,

(12:09):
and when we started working it up, it obviously had some zz top
influence. So I called Billy andsaid, hey, why don't you join
us on this, and he puthis stamp on it, which took it
even further in that direction. Itreally really turned up right. This is
the Albold Show on Katrcy. Likean able out and still labor find somebody

the part hand, don't feeling onour hand. I want to get down

been closed for so long. Letyour body relaxed and lost in the song.
We all got a little together witha different inside. Finding is not
the answer. Living in the greatdivine so high same, it's all about

(18:59):

(19:21):

Time to stick with love. Thelove we share. His hate is to
pick up a burden too bad.We all got to live together, but

the past to give me. I'mlive again. It's a special edition to

(22:23):
Music Hall of d one oh onewith Professor Al We are talking with Warren
Haynes of Government Mule, the brandnew album Piece Like a River, the
first single release before the album, which is out in its entirety now Dreaming
Out Loud featuring Ivan Neville and RuthieFoster. You mentioned earlier, Billy Gibbons

(22:45):
is featured on one of the tracks. Billy Bob Thornton is featured on one
of the tracks. And you justworked and toured it with all these people.
You just get to have whoever youwant on these albums. I was
gonna say, I was just gonnasay, I bet Al wishes he could
just go, Hey, I gota song that sounds like Warren Hayes.
We should call him. But whenyou're Warren Hayes, you get to do

(23:07):
stuff like that. Well, that'sone of the perks. You know,
we've we've built such great relationships throughthe years, because that's one of the
beautiful things about being a musician isthat when you're traveling, you know,
especially on a festival or something likethat, you're hanging out with people you

(23:29):
don't get to see enough, andyou build these relationships that they're kind of
unique. And you know, maybeyou don't see each other for six months
or a year or two years orwhatever, but there's still this bond that
is still there. And you know, Billy and I talk on the phone
and talk about guitars and amps andyou know, uh, it's just nice

(23:49):
to incorporate people into your life. That one. Yeah, and you and
Billy also recently did the CMT tributeto Leonard skinnerd That was a blast.
Yeah, I really enjoyed that alot. That was a phenomenal performance,
by the way, and what andworking with Paul Rodgers. That's the first

(24:10):
time I had met Paul before, but I had never worked with him.
And Slash and I hung out together. I think that was the first time
we actually played together. That's aninteresting combination, me and Billy and Slash.
It's pretty cool, you think,Well, you know, at least
I noticed on that one if Iif I recall correctly, you were playing

(24:30):
a strat on that song, weren'tyou. Well Sweetholme Alabama has that strat
intro. The whole ed King performanceis a strat and a beautiful strat sound,
So I kind of knew that thatpart, and I brought a strat
with me just for that reason, thinking that it really cried out for that,

(24:52):
even though I'm more of a Gibsonguy. Absolutely. And speaking of
the collaborations on this coming album,You've got Ivan Neville, who you guys
have played with Ivan before, butRuthie Foster has made a return to the
record she's worked with you guys.Yeah, Ruthie and Ivan both sang on
my solo record, Man in Motion, which was kind of a soul music

(25:14):
record, and our voices blend togetherreally great, and they're two of my
favorite singers. Anyway, And ofcourse Ruthie plays great guitar and Ivan plays
great keyboards. But on this recordthey're just singing. It is kind of
like a Slige in the Family ofStone approach where we're trading off verses and
choruses and different sections of the songand really turned out fantastic. Well.

(25:41):
I had the pleasure of seeing youagain recently when you were here in Houston
back in November at the seven onethree Music Hall, and have to say
that you guys sounded phenomenal and asalways and I love, of course,
you know, me being a geargeek, I also love seeing all the
stuff you pull out for different songsand you know, you know, just

(26:03):
oh, he's playing the Firebirder,he's playing the you know, the Les
Pauler, the three thirty five onthis one. Um, so the house
burying dig just interrupted question because you'veburied this whole thing. And I wear
well, I don't know if youremember this from the last time we talked
to you. With heavy Load Bluesal among all the different hats he wears,
he has several different bands and oneof them is literally called soul Shine.

(26:26):
Yeah, no, wow, nineteenyears this year and with that name.
And it was actually the movie RisingLow that caused me to change the
name to the band to soul Shine. Oh man, that's so cool.
I figured after watching that documentary itwas it was it was impactful, Warren,
because after watching the documentary and theway you guys handled the passing of

(26:48):
Woody Um, I realized that ifI was going to be out night after
night doing this stuff, that lifewas too short to be doing it with
people I didn't like and idiots, and that it was going to become a
family. And so I restructured thewhole thing named a soul Shine and this
August will be nineteen years. That'samazing, man, that's really cool.
Now, if I could just figureout how to work with people that I
don't like, well, you know, it is a challenge. It's because

(27:15):
you mentioned family. You know,it's making any family. There's going to
be challenges and times where things arenot going as planned, you know.
And I'm with you, only workingwith people that I enjoy these days,
only doing what I want to dofor the most part. You know,
it's it's at some point in yourlife, it's it's good to make that

(27:38):
decision because life's too short, andI think we all just learned that crash
courses well and so something and Imentioned earlier the evolution of you guys,
and I've been following you. Imean, you know, all the way
back School Mule, the trio beforebefore keys were added into the thing.
And it was actually a good buddyof mine, Paul Martinez, who first

(27:59):
turned me onto you guys. Andso I caught the end of an early
set outside of Austin, Texas whenyou got like in the mid nineties or
whatever. And then I listened tothe single that was released, dreaming out
Loud, and obviously this is,uh, you know you are. You
have the tenure to have explored allyour different musical influences in the directions you

(28:21):
want to go. So dreaming outLoud is you know, it's a new
thing for you guys, right,Yeah, there's a horn section. We
brought our friend Bobby Allende into playingpercussion, and then obviously Ivan and Ruthie
singing. So there's a lot offirst in that sentence there, and it's

(28:42):
come a long way from the originaltrio. But this this is our twelfth
studio room Outlaw Dure friend, thisis the Outlawed Dave Show on KPRC ninth,

(29:02):
the special edition of Musicology one Oone with the very learned Professor Al
his hero Warren Haynes. The bandGovernment Mule started as a side project from
the Allman Brothers over two decades ago. The brand new album Piece Like a
River, and of course we rememberSoul Shine, one of the original songs
written by Warren Haynes, is theinspiration for Professor Al's Banned by the aforementioned

(29:26):
name. Government Mule has always beenabout eventually bringing as many of our influences
to the table as possible. Youknow, when we started in ninety four,
it was about bringing back the conceptof the power trio that we felt
like nobody else was doing at thattime. But there was never you know,

(29:47):
we were only going to make onerecord at that point. We didn't
have any design tone being together forfive years, ten years, twenty years,
thirty years. We thought we weregoing to do this one record and
then go back to our full timewith the Alma Brothers. But once it
kind of gained steam and build itsown kind of thing. With each record,

(30:08):
we would think, well, let'slet's expand a little bit more so
By the time we got to ourthird record with Woody, which was called
Life of for Insanity, we broughtJohnny neal And to play keyboards on about
half of that record. It wasstarting to expand when we were starting to
include a bunch of different instruments. You know, wood he played a lot

(30:29):
of different string instruments and he reallyenjoyed bringing that kind of flare to the
table as well. So it startedway back, and I guess it's kind
of started when people started sitting inwith us and certain songs would benefit from
a larger ensemble, and you knowwhat, soul Shine being one of them.
We never played Soul Shine as atrio because it just didn't feel right

(30:52):
as a trio song. Whenever somebodysat in, like on keyboards or even
the guitar or something, we wouldoccasionally play it, and we would play
it acoustically sometimes. Um, Sothat was kind of part of the thing
too, and it was just niceto be able to eventually bring all these
influences out well, and we're gonna, we're gonna, we're gonna dig up

(31:18):
one of those acoustic versions of Soulshine. Warren Haynes Government Mule, the brand
new album piece like a River. We've already been jamming, dreaming out loud
in anticipation of this release that isavailable everywhere, and of course you guys
are out on tour and there isstuff happening. Uh Mule dot net.
Mule dot net is your touchstone forall things government Mule. Uh, Dark

(31:42):
Side of the Mule is going tobe performed. I believe this. Uh
this coming summer. Yeah, we'regonna do twelve Dark Side shows. These
will be the last ones that weever do, promises. Yeah, well,
so never say never. We're gonnahave to go to one of these
twelve shows, if not all ofthem. Well, it's it's really a

(32:05):
great experience doing that stuff. Wewe augment the band. It becomes twice
as big at that point, andit's all in honor of the fiftieth anniversary
of Dark Side of the Moon. And people that don't know, Dark Side
of the Mule is not us playingDark Side of the Moon. It's us
just playing whatever Pink Floyd songs wewant to play. But with foreign production

(32:28):
and laser show, that's awesome. We appreciate your time, know that we're
huge fans and we can't wait untilwe get to sit together again with you.
Well, thanks so much and Iappreciate it's good talking to you again.
