Speaker 1 (00:00):
Oh, hi, friend, welcome to the thoughts Shower. Intern.
Speaker 2 (00:04):
John is my name on the heels, No, not on
the heels, on the toes of what will be a
great weekend, because I think the heels would be already happened,
so toes. Going forward. As I mentioned, first time going
New Jersey this weekend. First time going Jersey Shore. Very exciting.
(00:25):
Got a friend's wedding and my buddy Buster who does
radio it used to be your bosson Tampa. Now he's
in Philly. I've never been to the Jersey Shore. It
is technically the shore. I don't know if it's like
the Jersey Shore Jersey Shore TV show. I think that's
seaside Heights, I think, but we're doing it. Very excited.
(00:48):
I'm excited to have a Taylor Ham I think is
that they're called Taylor not swift Ham. Yeah, into our
park roll. So it sounds like it's basically just fried meat,
if I'm not mistaken. Kind of it sounds like it's
like scrapple, but the New Jersey version of it. So
(01:10):
I'm very excited to try that and be on the
water too. You got some stuff to work on this weekend,
some projects, and then we're good to go. But man,
so I'm a big I checked my phone and like
social media for like on this day. I like to
see what I was doing this day several years ago.
(01:31):
And it's a big week in the history of intern
John in this here radio station, because twelve years ago,
earlier in the week was I guess it was last
weekend Caine texted me for the first time. So if
you don't know how this whole thing kind of came
to be, I started radio in Minnesota. From Minnesota, was
there for four years, went to Des Moines, Iowa, was
(01:54):
there for eleven months. I told my girlfriend at the
time because she wanted to move down with me, Hey,
don't move down me. Just don't do it. I'll be
here for less than a year. Dance on to the
next step. And it was like eleven months to the day.
I had no idea the Caine Show is hiring. I
sent my audio to somebody in New York, shouts David Brody,
who I willot to, and with the idea that hopefully
(02:16):
he'd listened to it and then give me some feedback. He,
being the great person he is, forwarded onto Caine. And
then so twelve years ago last weekend, got a text
from Caine saying, Yo, man, what's going on. It's Caine.
And I was like, you know, excited a little bit.
I don't know, freaked out the word. But like within
(02:37):
the industry, everybody knew who he was, you know what
I mean. I had heard like rumors of like how
crazy he was with running a show, like how talented,
but also just like how he was kind of like
a wizard with things like how he could do multiple
things at once, and he had a studio in his house,
so on and so forth, and so then earlier, so
(02:59):
I guess early later, like a day or two later,
he is. He mentioned they were hiring. They're looking for
somebody you know, young and who could be you know,
say things that people were thinking, and I'm like, okay,
that's kind of me. A couple of days later, the
old boss of the station, man by the name of Mark,
who also very grateful for called me and explained like, hey,
(03:20):
you know, they basically have somebody already. I mean his
exact words were, hey, like they basically have somebody, Like
they have somebody they're probably going to hire, but they
want to give you a shot and let you audition.
How the audition worked was I was in a studio
in Des Moines, Cain Sarah. I think, Eric, we're in
a studio here in DC, and we did a fake show,
(03:44):
a fake twenty minutes and I couldn't see them, which
was a little bit like, Okay, you know this is difficult.
How do I know when to jump in? How do
I know? I talked over somebody. I can remember a
couple of things we talked about. I remember he mentioned
something about hooking up in a minivan and I was
(04:05):
a story or what and I said, well, yeah, it
makes sense all the cup holders, and he like this
was the first time he was on another sentence and
he stopped and goes, wait, what did you say? Like
he was talking, he goes, wait, John, what'd you say? Like, oh, yeah,
it makes sense that people hook up a minivan the
cup holders. He's like, what do you mean, I go
acquate hydration and place to put your fingers. And he
(04:25):
paused and started laughing, and like it was a very
odd of gob it's the right word, but like the chemistry,
like there was something there where at at the end
of it. We talked about psychics and that kind of stuff.
At the end of it, I heard him say, off, Mike,
I never felt so outgunned in a good way, like
(04:48):
he said, man, I never felt so gunned. And I
was like, Okay, maybe maybe I got this, Like maybe
that was enough because I felt like, you know, for
them not really knowing me, I like maybe they had
settled on somebody, like, you know, because I know it's
like to try to hire somebody, it's a long process,
and they've been trying for you know, four months. And
(05:08):
I was in my head, I'm like, dude, I blew
this out of the water. I killed this. I absolutely
killed this. And then it was like a week goes by,
don't hear a thing. I'm like, all right, maybe not.
And I remember then Caine went to the iHeart Festival.
My boss at the time man by name of a
Great Chance, so I also a lot too was going.
(05:29):
I was like, oh, maybe they'll you know, talk to
each other. And then it was like after the festival,
he texted me like, hey, man, how's it going. I
was like, I remember saying, that is my back. I
feel like I'm on the Moray Show and I'm waiting
to see if I'm the father or not.
Speaker 1 (05:43):
He's like, what do you mean.
Speaker 2 (05:44):
I'm like, dude, I don't know if I like, are
you gonna hire me or not? So then I think
like another week went by and then uh Mark, who
was again in the station ped at the time, called
me and I was like, hey, man, uh we're going
to hire you. Can you be out here like in
a week? And I was like, I was so taken back.
(06:04):
I think I froze. And he's like hello, I'm like,
oh yeah, and he's like, uh, I thought you'd be
more excited, and I was like, dude, I am very excited.
I'd never moved across the country before, so that was
the whole thing of figuring out. Luckily I didn't have
much to pack, but figuring out how to move everything
across the country. And then there's a couple of like
things about this whole process. I look back and go,
(06:28):
that's weird. So I didn't know where to land or
really where to live, and which is also scary now
in hindsight, because this is before like there's like a
great apartment reviews and like TikTok and that stuff. So
I rented a place having never been here before. All
I knew was the studio was in Rockville. All live
in Rockville. Didn't look at the place knew. I was
(06:50):
on the fourth floor. All good to go, they allowed dogs.
Here we go. And then on the flight here we
landed at Dulles, Me and Chewie. I nobody picked me up,
which I'm I still give Eric crap about like nobody
picked me up. I had a friend for myself, and
then I was going to the hotel because I had
(07:12):
a hotel for two weeks. Hotel was on Washington Boulevard
or no, it was on Washingtonian Boulevard, and I was
like that can't be a real street, must be a typo.
So I put in Washington Boulevard. Ended up in Baltimore,
mind you. I landed on a Thursday. They had me
start on a Friday, which also a bit odd, but
I think I was so excited to be here and
(07:32):
to work with Kane. I was like good, all good.
So first night at the hotel, Cheweye was on medication
to be able to sleep on the plane because it
was his first time going a plane. He was so high
he peed the bed with me in it. I remember
waking up and be like, dude, you must be high.
Because I know you don't have the audacity, you know,
And then drove to the station for the first time.
(07:54):
Nobody told me I needed a key to get into
the building, so that was exciting, and get her very
early and just did that and then uh yeah, it
was off and running. I remember the first time because
I didn't really talked the first show. Man, I'd love
to hear that show. But somebody said something about like
they were doing something kind of illegal, and I just
(08:14):
I'll it's kind of like I do is like have
fun in jail. And I think he spit his coffee
out Cane did and I was like, okay, but it's weird, man,
because I remember on the flight over it was a
very much like it all happened so fast, you know,
for me being Minneapolis, to me moving from home for
the first time to then getting like the dream job
that happened in a year, you know what I mean.
And so I remember when I landed a Dulles legitimately
(08:37):
getting off the plane and I remember thinking to myself,
if I can make this last year I got him,
I can make this last year. I think I'll like,
I know they're not gonna be happy at first, I
have a feeling not gonna be happy. I'm replacing Sammy,
who was beloved, and I get it. I love Sammy's
a fantastic guy, great friend. I was like, if I
can make this last a year, I really think that
(09:00):
it's gonna be okay. And you know, here we are.
I think it took a little bit. I think people
at first were not fans. I think I owe a
lot to Cane certainly and his crafting of the story.
If you will to make me lovable, I guess I
don't know if that's the right word. Then it kind
(09:22):
of took off. Man, So it's a wild I try
to have moments of like pause and think about it
and like, man, we've done a lot these last twelve years.
Done a lot these last twelve years. I mean, certainly
the comedy tour alone, we raised one hundred thousand dollars
for Fisher House. The podcast is won awards, it hit
millions of years, listens, whatever, same thing. It's been a
(09:45):
wild road, dude, it's a why like twelve years it
doesn't seem like that.
Speaker 1 (09:51):
I think that I said that before too, Like if
you had told me.
Speaker 2 (09:56):
All of the bad things that are going to happen
these last twelve years. I wouldn't have believed it. But
I also wouldn't have believed all the good things, because
it's been so much good the last twelve years. And
it's very grateful, and I appreciate you listening to the
show and listening to podcasts and following on Instagram at
Internsohn Radio and whatever you do support I appreciate you.
(10:16):
It's again, I'm just I'm very blessed to be here.
I don't I don't take that lightly.
Speaker 1 (10:23):
So thank you. Have a fantastic weekend. We'll see you Monday.
