Speaker 1 (00:00):
And a happy Wednesday friend. Welcome to a thought shower.
Intern John is my name. In the middle of what
will be quite the week, let's kind of get into this. Well,
I burn out this week. Ha, No, sir, ree Bob
went to the Caps game last night, had to leave
after the second period because well, gotta work. Naturally, game

(00:22):
went to overtime, and then we went overtime, so I
got to watch the NMTV that was exciting. Today doing
hockey of my own George Shaun Prepp got our third
preseason skate, which is very exciting. And then I believe
I'm gonna be on Fox five in DC tonight at seven.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
I woke up to a text about that, so that's exciting.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
If I'm not doing it tonight, I'm doing it tomorrow
tomorrow doing TV at two, possibly at seven. Then I
go back to the bar to do some video stuff
and then CAP scheme on Friday.

Speaker 2 (00:55):
So we're busy. We're rocking.

Speaker 1 (01:00):
Also today, I believe today is year thirteen of Intern
John in DC, and that is always every anniversary is
kind of.

Speaker 2 (01:17):
Shocking. Is the word surprising?

Speaker 1 (01:19):
Certainly sneeze break and just to kind of you know,
set the stage, I started doing radio. I was seventeen
in Minnesota. Dave Ryan the morning show on KATIEWB. Dave
absolute legend, getting to work for him for four years.
Somewhere along the lines of when I was in Minneapolis
is when they officially launched the iHeartRadio app, and that

(01:42):
was like, for the first time, you could listen to
other shows live like gizbel. You could listen to podcasts certainly,
but when they first launched the app, they had these
twenty four hour channels where it was like you it
was the idea was you could listen to a show
twenty four hours would be on repeat. And there's only
a couple of shows that were on there. One was

(02:03):
Bobby Bones, one was the Cane Show. I remember saying
to myself, if I ever, you know, left Minneapolis and
did mornings again, I would want to work for one
of those two shows, because I listened to them. And
that's something against David. It was just saying, like I
knew my career had to go different places. I got,
you know, different opportunities and learn more. I just knew,

(02:24):
like I want to be one of those shows. I
grew so fast forward. I go to Des Moines and
I'm in Des Moines doing the night show and music
and basically a chance to just kind of get more
experience if you will. And I get to Des Moines,
I asked my them boss, Greg Chance, who was a
mentor to this day. I'm seeing him next week. Actually,

(02:45):
I said, hey, in the timeslot of my show, who
had the highest ratings of all time? And he said,
Kane Caine did Knights in Des Moines. When he was there,
he had like a forty eight share, which means forty
eight percent of the market listened to his show. And
that was kind of crazy, and so I said, okay, cool.

(03:05):
So I print off a sheet of paper it said
Caine and then forty eight point eight, and I put
it on the wall of my office day one, and
I posted that photo on my Instagram. This past week
interned job radio, and that was the goal. So fast forward, like,
I don't know a month, my month, I guess almost

(03:25):
a year. I'm in Des Moines. I'm grinding our morning show.
At the time, the Elvis Durant show, based in New
York was coming to town for the IOSA Fair, and
I thought to myself, all right, well, you know, this
is a good chance to market and to you just
gond give a name out there. I sent David Brody,
their producer, my aircheck, which is like your your highlight taper,

(03:47):
radio stuff, you know, and so Brody heard it. And
at the time, so this would have been August, I
didn't realize Cain was hiring, since June had no idea,
was too busy focused on doing my own thing in
Des Moines and so on and so forth. And so
I got an email from the then boss of the

(04:08):
radio of Hot nightd Ie five, who said, hey, Caine
got your air check and he really wants to talk
to you. And what I learned later on was I
guess he was listening to my highlight tape and his
wife Natasha walked by and said, who's that jackass?

Speaker 2 (04:29):
And it was me and so Kane want to have
me in. So the boss calls me.

Speaker 1 (04:34):
He goes, hey, like, we've basically already hired some direct quote,
We've basically already hired somebody, but Cain wants to give
you a try, which I look back.

Speaker 2 (04:45):
And I think at first it's like, okay, you know whatever, But.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
I think knowing that, knowing that I had to go
all in kind of set stage you know. So later
that week we did a test run and it was
me and des Moines, and then in the studio in DC,
it was Caine and Sarah and we did a test show.
I had to find the audio somewhere, and it was

(05:14):
a little bit difficult because not being in the same
room as two people is hard. It's like doing a
presentation and it's two people in the room, one person
on zoom. It's hard to know when to balance in.
So I would listen to the show and I would
study the show, like okay, I could jump in here,
you know, if they're talking about this topic. I learned

(05:35):
Caine's cadence, so I knew when he took a break
and when he was not trying to fill time, but
like when he was moving to the next thing, but
maybe need a couple more seconds, Like okay, that's where
I can jump in. And so I remember like sitting
in that room and being like, okay, this is it.

(06:00):
It was awesome. I don't know, I don't remember much
we talked about. I know we talked about like vans
and my vans. I was saying vans are the best
for hookups, and he's like why, And that was the
first time where I caught him off guard where he's
like yeah what, I said, Oh yeah, because you know

(06:21):
places for drinks and then you know finger placement. And
at the end of the of the audition, I heard
him say off Mike, and I don't know, I don't
think he knew I was still listening where he said
I've never felt saw a gunned. I was like, Okay,
maybe I got this, like maybe this worked out. Then

(06:42):
a week passed and then he reached out again, like
hey man, how's it going, And I was like not great.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
He's like, what do you mean. I'm like, I haven't
heard anything.

Speaker 1 (06:53):
I have no idea if I got the gig or not,
you know, And then it was like the week of
the IRFS.

Speaker 2 (07:00):
Didn't hear from him again. But I knew that.

Speaker 1 (07:04):
My boss at the time, in Greg, had seen Kane
in Vegas the IRA Festival, and I guess they had
dinner where uh A Chance said to Kine like you're
gonna take this kid, aren't you, And there was maybe
like golly, I don't even remember when. A couple of
weeks after that, I got called from Kane. He was
at the Zoo with the girls and he was getting

(07:28):
I can hear him being stopped by everybody and he's like,
I want you on the show, and I was like, okay, legit.
Got the call on a Monday. They're like, can you
start Friday? And to this day, I don't know why.
I started on a Friday, cheweing and I flew out
on that Thursday land at Dulles. We had a corporate

(07:50):
housing which is basically a hotel in the rio on
Washingtonian Boulevard, to which I thought, oh, that can't be correct.
Must be a typo. Must be why Washington Boulevard bro
I drove from Dulles to Baldemar when I was supposed
to be in Rockville that first Thursday. I remember get

(08:12):
off the plane at Dulles and I said to myself, Man,
if we can make this last a year, I think
they'll like me. I knew Sammy was beloved and still
is sam as a great guy. I was like, man,
if I you know, have any chance of making it,
like we got to make this thing last a year,
if I can get the people to not hate me
after a year, I think I can win. Like I

(08:33):
think that you know, they'll they'll like me, and that
first day, I remember, I got her hell early.

Speaker 2 (08:43):
And then to be able to.

Speaker 1 (08:44):
Watch the magician do what he did, you know, because
growing up in radio, it's like you heard the rumors
of Kine, like you heard like how proficient he was,
and like how he was.

Speaker 2 (08:57):
The best. You know, he had a studio in his house,
he did club K on the weekends live, and then
to see what he did and be like, oh, yeah,
it's all real, like it's all he actually is that good?
You know what I mean?

Speaker 1 (09:14):
And then that Saturday had my first event with him.
I think it was a walk. I wanted to say
it was the Lupiswalk. I don't know for sure, but like, again,
mind you, I've been in town for thirty six hours.
And I said to him, hey, you realize there's a
hidden vagina in the Cane show logo. He's like, excuse me, Yeah,
why does the end look like a giant crevass? He

(09:37):
like our boss at the time turn and looked like
is this kid for serious? And then Kane said, I
ruined the logo for him, you know what I mean.
So that was thirteen years ago, was show on what
a Run It's been?

Speaker 2 (09:53):
What a you know?

Speaker 1 (09:56):
It was funny because I was just talking about how
busy I am this week, and when I first got here, I.

Speaker 2 (10:01):
Was not.

Speaker 1 (10:04):
So to think back on that and be like, man,
what all have we done in thirteen years? You know,
raising one hundred thousand for Fisher House, two number one albums,
grammy consideration on a restaurant, coach hockey. Been lucky with that,
three tournament championships for regular season championships, and then now

(10:27):
to have a show. I'm a blessed is a big
enough word, you know. But the cool thing about this
profession is that I'm here because of you. That's the
coolest part.

Speaker 2 (10:43):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (10:44):
Obviously, you know I work hard and grinding, hence the
schedule this week, But the main reason I'm here, it
comes down to it, is because of you listening to
the show, in the podcast and the albums and coming
to stuff, and that's really cool. That's a really special thing.

Speaker 2 (11:00):
You know.

Speaker 1 (11:00):
Chewey and I first moved here, we were sleeping on
the floor in Des Moines because it broke as hell,
and then to be here now is cool. It is
weird to be here without them, you know what I mean.
I had somebody on Facebook reach out saying they know
that cheeing and can't looking down proud. It's supposed to

(11:25):
be a happy podcast and that meant a lot.

Speaker 2 (11:31):
Oh man, can we do?

Speaker 1 (11:32):
You know?

Speaker 2 (11:32):
The thirteen years in DC? Who knows?

Speaker 1 (11:36):
I'm here as long as you want me basically, So again,
that's the special relationship that we have. Yeah, I never
thought i'd be here. I don't know where I thought
it'd be. But what a run, lucky thirteen. You know
the plans to keep on grinding, keep on entertaining, and

(11:58):
I'm happy you're whipping along the way. Friend, So have
a fantastic Wednesday. I'll either be on Fox tonight or
I'm on twice tomorrow. We'll find out together. You can

Are You A Charlotte?

Are You A Charlotte?

In 1997, actress Kristin Davis’ life was forever changed when she took on the role of Charlotte York in Sex and the City. As we watched Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte navigate relationships in NYC, the show helped push once unacceptable conversation topics out of the shadows and altered the narrative around women and sex. We all saw ourselves in them as they searched for fulfillment in life, sex and friendships. Now, Kristin Davis wants to connect with you, the fans, and share untold stories and all the behind the scenes. Together, with Kristin and special guests, what will begin with Sex and the City will evolve into talks about themes that are still so relevant today. "Are you a Charlotte?" is much more than just rewatching this beloved show, it brings the past and the present together as we talk with heart, humor and of course some optimism.
