Speaker 1 (00:00):
Because Nico's leaving on a jet plane Tennessee. He'll never
be back again. This is Fox Sports Weekends at Noon
with Zach Harris. I'm your host to Zach Harris. Thank
you for tuning in. However, you may be tuning in
on a cloudy but warmer Sunday in comparison to over
(00:20):
the last week or so. Now, one of the big
news coming through the wire on the weekends is Nico
im Aliva, which we're gonna call him Nico ama Levin.
As you heard with leaving on a jet plane. It
is reported that Nico will be entering to Transfer Portal,
(00:45):
the Spring Transfer Portal, when it opens this coming Wednesday,
the sixteenth, which should come to no surprise to anybody
after what's unfolded. So for those of you that might
be living under a rock or not following college football
as much, because we're just starting to get into the
spring practices, the A days that A games that A
(01:08):
practices open practices for the fans, we're just starting to
get into that stuff. So I can understand if you
may not be paying attention to college football enough, but
you'll hear it on this show. Often football is king.
It doesn't matter if the NFL or college football football
is king, and that is the number one topic of conversation.
(01:32):
And I'm going to open up the phone lines to
this because nil is something that is still fairly new.
A lot of people have a lot of opinions on it.
You know, some of the younger generation people that I
talked to might have a different opinion than some of
the older generation of people that I discuss the NIDL
(01:53):
deal with ultimately name image likeness. It's here to stay
now for me personally, I'll give you my quick opinion.
We'll get into the whole Nico fiasco that is unfolded
going from Friday into today, but my opinion of it
is I put more blame on the ncouble A because
(02:16):
we were all aware that this situation was coming. When
a federal judge ultimately decided that these players have the
right to name image likeness, now this opened a wild,
wild wild landscape for college sports, not just college football,
(02:38):
college sports. Just to give you a little insight, BYU Basketball,
who made a couple of Cinderella type runs in the
NC double A tournament, just spent eight million dollars on
two players. Reported eight million million dollars on a combined
(03:02):
two players that were coming out of the transfer portal,
and they were able to spend big time money to
bring these guys to Utah. Now, we all know what
you're like when you're a young guy in college. Utah
does not sound that great. But if you're gonna give
me a combined eight million to come here, yeah, I'm
(03:22):
going to Utah. Sign me up, Sign me up. Morbin's
I'm coming. So that just gives you a little insight.
So I'm all four players getting paid. I do think
there needs to be stipulations, rules and regulations surrounding the
nil But I would love to hear what you guys
have to say. Five eight six nine zero zero nine eighty.
(03:44):
Once again, five six nine zero zero nine eighty. Would
love to hear what you guys say. In the meantime,
let's get to this Nico fiasco. So Nico, I'm a
leaving because it's Sunday Funday ten and two record first
full year as a starter five star recruit back in
twenty twenty two, that originally signed a four year, eight
(04:07):
million dollar contract with the Tennessee Balls. Now that opened
up some doors for lawsuits about the open market and
direct nil conversations with the recruits. But ultimately Tennessee fought
for him and fought for him to play. And we'll
get more into that, but let's go to the phone lines.
(04:29):
Fox Sports. What's your name where you're calling from?
Speaker 2 (04:31):
Hey, it's Tommy in Malta.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
Hey, what's up Tommy?
Speaker 2 (04:35):
Not much? How you doing? Glad to have you back on.
Speaker 1 (04:38):
Thanks. I appreciate that, Tommy. What you got to say
for me?
Speaker 2 (04:41):
Now, what's to say that after a year? That was
the BYU that gets five million. Let's say he's not
a draft and a prospect, in which he probably is
if you're getting that. But let's say another team comes
out and say, hey, we'll give you seven millions, and
then they're bouncing back and forth and they don't have
to sit out a year because of the new stipulations.
I mean, it's just getting kind of crazy.
Speaker 1 (05:00):
I think you're absolutely nailing it right on the head
because one of the things of my concern is not
only did this NIL stuff come out, the transfer portal
rule changed completely. Now we always had coaches come and go,
but now players don't have to sit out for a year,
and it's basically a free for all, a wild Wild
(05:20):
West is how much can I get when I enter
the transfer portal? I think you're absolutely right. What is
to prohibit these guys from going out there and getting
the best deal for them? Which I don't blame them.
If I'm a guy, I'm going to get my money.
I don't blame them on that side. But what is
to prohibit them from just jumping year to year depending
(05:41):
on how much I can get paid. You saw it
with Jordan Addison. He left Pittsburgh and went to USC
because reportedly he was going to get a huge deal
out in southern California. So I absolutely agree with you.
I love that that spot.
Speaker 2 (05:54):
On the other part too, I mean, I understand going
from Pittsburgh to USC, you wouldn't even have to pay me.
They leave that area to go. Yeah. Part two is
like what about during practice? If the coach is trying
to corral the team and I'm sitting there like I'm
making triple what you're making, why am I going to
listen to you?
Speaker 1 (06:09):
And that's one of the things I love that the
Tennessee coach. If you go if you go to Tennessee
roster right now, if you go to their roster. He's
not even listed. Nico is not even listed on that
roster because the coach came out right after Friday where
he did not show up for practice because the very
first nil holding he held out trying to get his
(06:31):
four million from two million, and coach came right out
and said, you know what, you don't want to be here, Fine,
we got plenty of other guys that want to be here.
Good reddings, see you later. And I could not respect
that man more for doing that.
Speaker 2 (06:45):
I think that gives that team character, and a team
like Tennessee is going to bring in top talent. I mean,
go go make your money. Go out there. He's probably
not going to mount them much. And you know that's
why he's doing it, which I don't blame him. These
kids work hard, but it's just getting crazy with all
the more just being dished out and given out and
they've done nothing, they haven't proven themselves. There's there's a
(07:06):
video with Michael Jordan. He's on OPRAH and he's with
Parkley and he's saying, why are we paying these kids
off potential? They haven't done anything, they haven't proven anything,
and we're just handing them money. And it's just it's
not we're not going in the right direction.
Speaker 1 (07:22):
Think about it, you too, Thank you, Thanks Tommy for
that call. And exactly right at the end of his conversation,
we are paying kids that haven't even take a snap
in college football based on potential. Well, let's go back
to that. Twenty twenty two, Nico signs a four year,
eight million dollar contract coming out of high school, has
(07:44):
not touched a college field, and he's about to get
eight million dollars over the lifetime of his college career.
For four years now, he had okay numbers. Ultimately, this
team got led into the playoffs and they lost in
the first round. Lost is a loose word. They got
(08:06):
destroyed in the first round to the eventual champs, Ohio State. Now,
Nico did deal with some injuries during that game and
gutted it out, but not a great game overall. But
let's put it into perspective, Nil, these players are going
to take advantage and there's going to be schools that
(08:31):
will be taking advantage of this stuff. But this particular
situation that's unfolding right before our very eyes, where players
are now going to be holding out. Like I said,
I applaud Josh Hopel for coming out and saying, if
you don't want to be here, good riddance. Now that
(08:53):
it's a lot easier to do when you are an
elite recruiter and in twenty twenty you have what many
rate the number one quarterback in the draft class, a
five star recruit, Beson Brandon. They got him in his bag.
They got this dude in a bag for the twenty
(09:15):
twenty six class. So it's a lot easier to say
goodbye when it comes to that. But nonetheless, I respect
the volunteers head coach for coming out and saying that
not even listed on the roster. So if you go
to the Tennessee University website and you go to the
football roster, I just checked this morning, he is not listed.
(09:36):
There are two qbs listed and he is not one
of them. Now, let's get into what his season brought about. Now,
if you look at his season, his first year as
a full starter, Niko, i'ma leaving to go to a
different college with the most money, completed, sixty three point
(09:57):
eight percent of his passes, nineteen touchdowns, five interceptions, ran
for three hundred and fifty eight yards and three touchdowns.
The six foot six dual QB threat, has a lot
of potential, a lot of potential, and there is gonna
be colleges out there that is going to give him money.
(10:21):
I don't know if it's gonna be the four million
that supposedly he was asking for after slated to make
about two point two million this year. But let's look
a deeper dive into those numbers. Yes, he helped Tennessee get
into the playoffs, where they lost in the first round.
(10:42):
He threw for nineteen touchdowns, but eleven of those nineteen
touchdown passes came against Chattanooga, UTEP and Vanderbilt. Not exactly
lighting the world on fire. But that being said, this
kid still a five year recruit, five star recruit. He
(11:04):
does have talent. He's six foot six, dual threat, He's mobile,
he can throw on the run. Somebody is going to
take a flyer on him now. Some of the premier
offensive head coaches out there that you would think potentially
would look into him now as he goes to enter
(11:27):
the portal, which no doubt in my mind, he's going
to be in the portal come Wednesday. The spring portal
is opening. Some of the teams that may be looking
at him, such as USC in Oregon to premiere offensive
prominent teams USC with Lincoln Riley, although reportedly interested, Lincoln
(11:53):
Riley seems to love the quarterback that he has there
and doesn't seem too interested in bringing in Nico, which
is going to say a lot because this kid is talented.
It's all about finding the team that is the right fit.
In Oregon, USC would be at the top of my list. Also,
(12:17):
Ucla reportedly interested in this kid. He's a Californian native,
so obviously he may look to go back to UCLA
or USC, but like I said, USC is supposedly not interested.
A couple other teams to watch in my eyes anyways,
Texas Tech Maryland, Maryland, the former assistant coach for Alabama's
(12:44):
Nick Sabin. Since he's taken over that Maryland team, he's
looked deeply into getting some offensive players and some premier quarterbacks.
Has taken a look at some of the premier talents
in a portal before surprise me if Marylyn looks his way.
Wisconsin Syracuse. Take a look at what Syracuse did last
(13:07):
year when they brought in Kyle McCord, and Syracuse often
runs a high powered offense, so I think he would
be a good fit there, but I'll be honest, I
have a hard time seeing Syracuse coming up in meeting
the expectations that Nico has put on himself a four
million dollar bounty on his head. As to say, I
(13:32):
have a hard time believing that Syracuse would come up
and meet those expectations of what a contract might look like.
And then I think the number one place to look
is a guy that does not care about anything and
he is expected to run his college the way he
(13:54):
ran his team in the NFL. And that's none other
than Bill Belichick in North Carolina. Since he's taken over
as head coach and they haven't even started one single game.
He has not coached one single game. North Carolina has
been in that transfer portal, snatching guys up like it's
(14:17):
the NFL. That is why they are the number one
target in my eyes. I don't have any inside knowledge,
but when you look at Bill Belichick, if he could
bring in a talented quarterback to run what he wants
to run, there is no doubt in my mind that
(14:39):
he should be at the top of this list for Nico.
Now real quickly, I do want to touch Tennessee Like
I said, all praise to that head coach in that
organization for deciding you don't want to come to practice
on Friday, you want to hold out for more money.
Who are you? Bye? But, like I said, that's a
(15:02):
lot easier said than done. When you have potentially the
number one recruit in the twenty twenty six class who
happens to be a five star quarterback in Faizon Brandon.
When you have a five star quarterback in the bag
for the twenty twenty six class, it is easy to
(15:24):
walk away from a five star recruit because they're begging
for more money. You don't want to be here. We'll
get guys that want to be here. And I think
that's one of the things with the NIL is I
have a love hate relationship with it. I love it
because I want If I want to get paid, I'm
gonna go get paid. But I love it because you're
(15:47):
going to see how much these kids want it. You
got the money, you got the bag. Do you still
have the want the knee to get to the next level?
Do you want to be in the NFL? You got
your money, you got life changing, life altering money. How
(16:11):
bad do you want it? How bad are your aspirations
to make it to the next league. That is why
I love but hate the NIL because, like our caller said, Tommy,
thanks for the call in. If you want to call
in five eight six nine zero zero nine eighty open
lines five eight six nine zero zero nine eighty. Like
(16:32):
Tommy said, what is to prohibit these guys with no
free range? With all the free range I mean in
a transfer portal, I can come and go as I please. Now.
The only restriction Bernico, I'm a leaving on a jet
plane is that if he decides to sign with a
(16:52):
SEC team, he would have to sit out a year.
Those are the only restrictions for this kid entering to
transfer portal this Wednesday. I expect more to come about this.
He's going to be a hot commodity. I don't know
(17:12):
if it's going to be at the four million that
he would like. As you see, the NIL deals have
been more any public eye and will come to know
these terms probably and then Tennessee, you know, even though
I told you they have a five star recruit in
a bag for the twenty twenty six class, don't expect
Tennessee to just sit there and remain with their two quarterbacks.
(17:36):
They got two guys on a roster. When the portal
opens up on Wednesday, there are probably going to be
other quarterbacks, maybe not as high profiled as Nico, that
will be in that portal. I expect fully for Tennessee
to be active in it, but more importantly, Josh Hopel
(17:59):
and organization for Tennessee, this is hopefully, hopefully putting out
that word there. Do not take bad advice and hold
out for more money. I want you to get your money,
(18:19):
but don't sit here and act like it's all about
money because it's gonna rub the team wrong. Players aren't
gonna want to play with you. Why do I got
to come in and do my job when you're sitting
there holding out for more money and you expect me
to respect you, you can't even be here with your team.
(18:41):
I applaud this Tennessee team for doing exactly what they did.
Like I said, if you don't believe me, go check
out the roster. It's listed online. There's only two quarterbacks there.
This is Fox Sports Weekends at Noon coming up in
just two minutes. While while West, the Western Conference playoff
(19:02):
picture is coming a little bit clearer and it will
be crystal Clear. After today, we'll discuss it next
