(00:00):
We're getting closer to the NFL season. We're roughly about seven weeks away.
There's eight divisions. I started withthe NFC South because I wanted to go
from worst to first. I'm gonnaflip NFC South. Now we're going to
do the AFC South. I wantto start off with the Houston Texans and
work our way up. Houston Texansobviously are in a spot where they have
(00:20):
a brand new head coach. Theygot a rookie quarterback. They got a
kid coming back from leukemia, whichis amazing. They are building something for
the future, which tells me they'renot quite ready yet, but they are
definitely going in the right direction. They drafted their defensive back for the future
and Derek Stingley. They got CJ. Strout there. They added some wide
(00:44):
receiver weapons for the Houston Texans thisseason. The lasts a Way is not
about wins or losses. It's notabout wins or losses, but how they
progress through the season. I wantthem to be playing their best football towards
the end of the year. Thatthat doesn't mean they have to blow out
teams. It doesn't even mean theyhave to win games, but they have
(01:07):
to be more competitive and play bettertowards the end of the season than where
they start at the beginning of theseason. I think that's the best way
to subscribe to Houston Texans. Yeah, absolutely, And I think that's kind
of where we're at with the Texansis you're trying to basically build a system.
This was a team that was thatwas littered with struggles, considering when
you had the Deshaun Watson thing andthen he left, then you had a
(01:30):
new quarterback coming in, and nowall of a sudden, you're drafted CJ.
Stroud and now he's going to beyour starting guy, and you're trying
to build a system. You broughtin Devin Singletary from the Bills, trying
to give you a little bit morerunning back help. And that's kind of
what your goal should be, tobuild this game winning team that's gonna all
of a sudden storm it's way toplayoffs. It's to build a system to
(01:52):
find success, maybe not this year, maybe not next year, but overall,
trying to find a cohesive team anda team build that will give you
success for the future. You know, I think they did a great job
with their young quarterbacks, so obviouslythey drafted c. J. Strout.
They bring in the kid from Alabama, Will Anderson with their other pick when
(02:14):
they traded back up in the topfive to get him. So you have
your offensive and defensive captain in place. But not only that, they did
a great job where they brought inweapons around their young quarterback. Like you
said, they brought in Devin Singletary, They signed Dalton Schultz, They brought
(02:35):
in Robert Woods, John Metchi, the guy said coming back from leukemia,
he's ready to play. They haveNico Collins there, so there are pieces
there. Their line isn't as badas you would think for a rookie quarterback.
So I'm not saying that they're goingto be a bottom feeder. But
this season for me, is moreabout progress. They have a rookie head
(02:57):
coach, they got a rookie quarterback. They have to go through the growing
pains. The head coach and aquarterback have to go through the ups and
downs because the head coach is nolonger managing one side of the football.
He's got to deal with the specialteams. He's got to deal with the
defense, he's got to deal withthe offense. You are in charge of
all the grown men, not justthe football players, but for your coaching
(03:22):
staff as well. Now that's alot to handle for a rookie head coach
and now you have a rookie quarterback. This is the long game. The
Texans aren't in here to win theplayoffs this year. They're into it to
build and get to the playoffs withinthree to five years. Yep, that's
a reasonable goal. Whenever you're tryingto turn around a team, within three
(03:43):
to five years, you should bea playoff contender. Absolutely, And that's
the point of this season. Thisis a figure it out season. You
have two new people thrown into bigleadership positions, your head coach and your
starting quarterback. They have to finda system that works for them, not
to breed success this year, butto breed it down the line. What
things work, What works as faras you know, is it going to
be more of a receiver base,is gonna be more of a running game?
(04:05):
What's going to be the ways thatthey're able to find success in what's
going to be a competitive division. Now, what I do love about the
head coach for the Houston Texans isthat he is a raw, raw guy,
Demiko Ryans. He is a greatleader of men. So from that
(04:27):
standpoint, I know he's going tohave the Texans playing hard. But it's
not just about playing it hard. It's about putting these guys in the best
situation to succeed and ultimately playing theirbest when it matters the most. And
I think Demiko Ryans is the rightguy for the job. Even though most
head coaches have offensive minded experience,Demiko Ryans with his leadership, cannot be
(04:51):
undervalued. For a young team tryingto grow, who have two defensive stars
into making Derek sa Lee and WillAnderson and now you have CJ. Strout
on the offensive side of the ball. I think it's something that they need
to work through, but that leadershipthere cannot be undersold with Damiko Ryans.
Absolutely. And this kind of bringingthese guys in and having them now starting
(05:14):
out with the new leadership you havein place kind of gives you a mold
for a team you're not You're notfully there yet. You don't have the
complete build yet, you're still inthe foundation period, but the mold is
there. You have the outer sideof it. You're just trying to build
it from within. Now we gofrom a rookie quarterback with an established front
(05:34):
and the front office where they understandthey're going to play the long game to
the Indianapolis Colts, where it's neverbeen about the long game. But they
finally go ahead and draft another rookiequarterback. Obviously, once you draft a
quarterback, they are a rookie sinceAndrew Luck. They bring in their new
(05:56):
quarterback Anthony Richardson, who is rawbut very talented. Now the reason for
concern there, and I love thehead coach because obviously he was offensive coordinator
for the Philadelphia Eagles that led himto the Super Bowl. But my biggest
concern is does Jim Ersey, theowner of the Colts, who we all
(06:16):
know dabbles and some nose candy andcan get a little wild, does he
have the capacity inside himself to showsome patience for this team. That's gonna
be the question starting off. Areyou going to start off with Gardner Minshew,
who's the current labeled starter as ofright now, or are you gonna
jump right in with Anthony Richardson. Are you gonna just say all right,
(06:40):
sprint or fall on your face, like are you just gonna say throw him
out there and see what happens? Are you gonna let him kind of start
learning it, start figuring it out, learn from a guy who's been a
part of the Eagles, and GardnerMinshew who's coming into this is as the
guy who's going to be your starterday one seemingly, or you gonna say
(07:00):
all right, day one, you'reout there figure it out. So if
it was up to me, andI'm not a head coach for a reason,
I would throw Anthony Richardson out thereday one, not just to figure
it out, but to go throughthe ebbs and flows of a football season,
to have the highs, to havethe lows, but never get too
low on yourself, and figure itout throughout the season. When you hit
that wall, when you can throwthat deep ball, when you can squeeze
(07:24):
it into double coverage, when youcannot squeeze it into double coverage, How
to read a team, how toknow when to take off and run.
All these things are stuff that youneed to figure out for the long run.
Now, I don't know if Jimersay, because you can't listen to
what Jim Ersay says, because he'salready said, Well, the only way
to teach a young man is toplay him but also Gardner mitchu could be
(07:46):
Week one starter. You really don'tknow, so I'm not going to take
the word for them. But whatI do love is that they have Anthony
Richardson there, who reminds me alot of Josh Allen, who came in
extremely talented, but you did notknow if he was going to be able
to put it together and have NFLsuccess. Same thing with Anthony Richardson.
He has everything that you want ina quarterback at the height, the strength,
(08:11):
agility, the speed, the armstrength. He has everything you want
in a quarterback, but he isvery raw. Now they have an offensive
head coach who, guess what, just worked with Jalen Hurts. Now,
not to say he was the onlyreason Jalen Hurts was successful, because he
did put in his offseason, butto be able to mold an offense similar
(08:33):
to what the Eagles do, especiallywhen you have a Jonathan Taylor in a
backfield mixed up with a Zach Mosswho can catch the ball out of the
backfield, you know that bodes wellfor success. So if Shane Stench runs
the offense similar to what he didwith the Philadelphia Eagles, I think this
team can find some early success, and by success, I mean hanging into
(09:00):
games probably a little longer than theyshould because of that run game, because
of the design run with the quarterbackand being able to create a pocket for
a mobile quarterback, move him onthe run, moving the pocket. So
for me, like the Texans,it's all about the growth. Where are
you towards the end of the season. My main concern is Jim Mursty.
(09:22):
Does he allow that growth? Yeah? Absolutely, And I think what we
were just talking about is perfect isthe fact of you're gonna have growing pains.
Anthony Richardson is going to be outthere hopefully if if we're going to
be able to develop him this seasonand see him as the starting guy day
one, and it's not always goingto be comfortable. That's kind of the
whole point is we're seeing how he'sgoing to be adapting to the NFL level.
We're seeing if he's going to beable to make those difficult reads in
(09:45):
pressured situations. Is he going tobe a sit in the pocket kind of
guy or is he gonna try?Is he gonna be confident enough to bounce
the ball out when he needs to. It's also going to be on that
very powerful run game to kind oftake that pressure off of him in those
tight spots so that it's not heand feel like it's all on him.
He has to be able to,yes, be able to take the heat
of being that quarterback in that highpressure role, but also have some stability
(10:09):
around him to take it off whenhe can. Now we got the two
rookie quarterbacks out of the way,we only got about four minutes left,
so real quickly, if you couldgive me a paragraph on each the Titans
and the Jacksonville Jaguars on what youexpect, go ahead, ramble off,
and then I'll finish us off.All right, So Trevor Lawrence, I
feel like starting off with the JacksonvilleJaguars already showed last season that he's the
(10:31):
guy that we thought he was goingto be coming up from college. He
had four four thousand passing yards, twenty five touchdowns and only eight interceptions.
That's you know, that's what weneeded out of him. That was something
that we needed to see progress on. It was an offense that came together
much more strongly, and he wasable to be the centerpiece that we always
thought he was going to be forthe Jags that season. The other one,
(10:52):
I will say, if we're goingto talk to just about other quarterbacks,
Ryan Tannehill hasn't been that guy forthe Titans. He only put up
two five hundred passing yards. Hehad six interships and six interceptions. And
we've had a lot of questions aboutwhat that quarterback spot's gonna look like.
They drafted Malik Willis, they draftedanother quarterback. Is that going to be
a position we see moved around? Are we going to see an offense build
(11:15):
around Malik Willis? Are you gonnago with the guy you just drafted?
So that's kind of the development you'relooking to figure out. You either have
to choose to go with your veteranguy and Derrick Henry, even though Derrick
Henry has been the one who's beencarrying that offense and go do we build
or do we go with what wehave? I think that's the big question
(11:35):
now for me the Tennessee Titans. It was very curious that DeAndre Hopkins signed
there. Yes, you know,if you want to be about money,
be about money whatever that I don'tcare about that. I'm always for a
player getting their money. The reasonthat I'm curious why he's signed there because
there has been some influx with thequarterback position. Ryan Tannehill going back to
the postseason where he threw three interceptionsagainst the Cincinnati Bengal and they lost that
(12:00):
game because of Ryan Tannehill as opposedto some other reasons, but mainly that
too. Ryan Tannehill has been veryinconsistent as of late. They drafted quarterbacks
and back to back drafts. NowLeek Willis is a very, very raw
talent. You take Anthony richardson amultiple line by ten, that's how raw
that you have. Mollie Willis.Do we see will Levis this year?
(12:22):
I don't think so. I thinkthis is a kid that needs to come
in and learn the game. Hedid play in a pro style offense in
Kentucky. For me, with thathard nosed mentality, a head coach down,
you're gonna go with Ryan Tannehill. You're going to go with a game
manager. Don't mess it up.Now with the Jacksonville Jaguars, a lot
of people talk trash about them overspendingon receivers. The way I looked at
(12:45):
it last year was, hey,I have a young quarterback. I gotta
go out and get some receivers. My cabinets are bare. I went out,
I got my meat. That's myquarterback. Now I got to fill
my cabinets with Bryce and potatoes andeverything else. That's why overpaid for wide
receivers. Then they bring in CalvinRidley. People forget how good Calvin Ridley
was, and we saw glimpses ofhow good Trevor Lawrence can be and why
(13:11):
was the number one overall draft pick. This is one hundred percent the Jacksonville
Jaguars Division to lose, because theyhave their bona fide quarterback, because they've
shown that they can win and winningthe postseason, because they brought in yet
another young wide receiver to grow within Calvin Ridley, who's really going to
take off. The run game's gonnabe better. This offensive line is going
(13:35):
to be better. This is theJaguars Division to lose.
