Speaker 1 (00:00):
Thank you for joining us.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
We have a lot to talk about. We have a
lot to discuss. We've been reaching out to public servants.
We have a Senator Lee that will be joining us
on the programs. Senator of John Curtis sharing their observations
of today's tragedy. I don't even know how to describe it.
I'm a bit gutted myself.
Speaker 3 (00:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (00:20):
The name of the tour was called the American Comeback Tour.
It was led by a thirty one year old man
who had a lot of courage, willing to go in
front of college campuses and various auditoriums all around the country,
and his message was prove me wrong, prove me wrong.
We're talking, of course, about Charlie Kirk, who was just
getting underway with an event down at Utah Valley University
(00:44):
down there in Orum today. Before the event began, Charlie
was all smiles, throwing out hats to the people in
the audience. There were a lot of forty seven hats,
Maga hats in the audience at the time. He then
sat down and started taking questions and it wasn't very
long after that that a shot rang out and a
bullet struck Charlie Kirk in the neck. He was rushed
(01:06):
to the hospital and not a short time later he
was pronounced dead. Law enforcement tonight is asking for your help.
They have not found the suspect as of yet. It
appears the university had said a little bit earlier today
that they believe the man who fired the fatal shot
at Charlie Kirk was on a roof of a building
(01:28):
there on the campus who had sight to the event,
where to where the event was taking place, and fired
one shot. They do not know who he is, or
they may know, but they aren't saying right now. But
they are asking for your help tonight. So if you're
in that area, if if you may know something, please
contact police because you know, we need to find out
(01:52):
who is responsible for this and make sure that they
are brought to justice because Charlie Kirk, his millions of
fers around the country or mourning the loss of him
today and it is truly a tragic day here in
the state of Utah.
Speaker 1 (02:06):
You know, is this unfolded in real time this afternoon.
Speaker 2 (02:10):
The information was just in flux, and there was an
arrest made and the individual that they arrested is an
older gentleman that Utah politics is actually a small world.
I don't know of any elected official, grassroots member, even
Republican or Democrat, that didn't know this individual. And to
see him arrested and to see his you know that
he was maybe the suspected shooter, was very hard for
(02:33):
many of us, even though we think he's a bit
off or he's a bit of a character, to ever
ever do something like this. Well, it turns out as
the day has rolled on, that they believe this was
a sniper, that this was from a long range two
hundred yards.
Speaker 1 (02:47):
There are many buildings.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
If you go to the UVU campus, this is a
kind of an almost like stadium seating. There's a lower
bowl where his Charlie's tent was sitting, and so it
kind of tears up from there. The buildings rise even
higher from that common area above, and so there are
many vantage points where this sniper, this assassin could be positioned,
(03:10):
and so they've DoD They do not believe the gentleman
that was arrested earlier immediately following the shots that hit
Charlie Kirk, or the shot that hit Charlie Kirk, that
he is the assailant and so that assailant is still
at large. And again, if you look at that campus,
there are many places where that could happen. There's a
(03:30):
lot going on on social media. Rod you've seen, We've
seen video. I don't know if it's current, I don't
know if that was today. I don't know if people
are just putting things out there. But there's a couple
of videos where students for someone are posting now where
they saw someone on a roof and there they were
in black, they were laying on the roof, and so
there's just this is a story that is still happening.
(03:51):
It's still unfolding in real time. But I got to
tell you that this is hard because of you don't
expect it in Utah.
Speaker 4 (04:00):
You do not expect it in Utah. And we had
reported earlier. If you're listening, I had an opportunity to
join Sean Hannity for a little while today. We at
first there was a gentleman taken away by police, and
we know who that gentleman is, but we do not
believe he is a suspect. But he was originally taking
place because he was on the ground. We thought we
saw another suspect being taken away, but come to find
(04:23):
out we understand that in fact was Charlie Kirk. He
was being carried by several police officers, put it in
a police suv and rushed off to the local hospital
there where he died a very very short time later.
So there are a lot of unknown questions tonight. But
I think again, if any of you out there and
we want to get to your phone calls, because this
(04:44):
a day where I think it is just best to
talk about it and to process and to let you
share your feelings about it what you saw, so we
can kind of get an understanding of what it was
like at Utah Valley University today, and we will open
up the phones to you here in a little bit
a As Greg mentioned, sender Mike Lee, we've talked to
him a short time ago. We'll get his thoughts. Under
(05:04):
John Curtis, we'll get his thoughts as well. Hope to
hear from Utah Congressman Mike Kennedy and others throughout the
show today, but it's most important that we hear from
you because you know, like Greg just said, this is Utah.
We do not expect things like this to happen in Utah.
As a matter of fact, you know, a lot of
people are saying, what is going on here? What is
(05:24):
you know, what is happening to our state? And this
I think for the most part, we all feel this
is a very very safe state, a safe community for
the most part. That's why we live here. We love
it here. The people here are great. So that's what
we need to hear from you today eight eight eight
five seven o eight zero one zero on your cell
phone dial pound two fifty and say hey Rod. Of
(05:46):
course you can also leave us a message on the
talkback line. We are looking at our news partner KU
TV right now. It appears there will be a news
conference fairly shortly and peer I think this will be
on the campus of the University of Utah. That's what
it's looking like to me, is some sort of auditorium
and we're just waiting for it that to begin, and
(06:07):
when that does begin, we will carry it. But you know,
from you know, we had heard first from John Solomon,
John saying that Charlie Kirk had died. It was you know,
he said he had three people confirmed. That is still
there were other news organizations like Fox News and other
news organizations around the country not reporting that, and then
(06:28):
we got word from President Trump and in a very
brief statement, President Trump said, Charlie Kirk is dead. And
that set us all back when that final word came across.
And I think we are all trying to process that today,
understanding you know, why would anyone want to do this
and how did this go down? And again I reach
(06:49):
out to you the public. If you know someone or
know anything that may have some information on this, please
reach out to police. It could be the smallest little thing,
but you never know what that could lead to. So
we asked you to do that today and again you'll
hear from a lot of people, but most importantly, I
think it's important for you to process what's going on
(07:10):
and to join us on the show and share your thoughts.
There were a lot of people there. There are hundreds,
maybe a couple thousand or a thousand people. Many of
you called in to Sean earlier today to tell your stories.
But I know a lot of you cannot get through
on lines like that because Sean is you know, he
has a national show. He gets hundreds of phone calls
every minute of every day. There's a chance for you
(07:32):
here locally to reach out to us and tell us
what you saw, what you heard, and your feelings on
all of this tonight.
Speaker 2 (07:38):
You know, in the age of you know, social media,
and there's a lot of voices out there, there's a
lot of great influencers, there's a lot of great conservative voices.
I think what made Charlie Kirk Difference different and Turning
Point USA different is that he was really focused on
and making great strides with our young people. Yeah, the
generation Z yes, And when you meet a college student
(07:58):
who's been who's professor are liberal and they were hearing
just one version of a worldview all the time. And
you had this one single individual that would go to
campuses and they would be packed and it wouldn't always
be everybody cheering. There were people he would say, ask
me anything. You could just ask him any question. You
would have that discussion with you, and it really drew
in young young people to hear a diversity of thought,
(08:20):
to hear a take that wasn't just parroted in every
class and in every lecture and in every media outlet
that was there was this something different about Charlie Kirk
and the people that he was able to touch or reach.
Turning Point USA in the twenty four election where they
saw in places like Arizona where there was trouble with
the voting machines, which seemed last minute, they had mobilized
(08:44):
greyhound buses, charter buses to take voters to the next
closest voting pull. If one of those things broke down,
they could get you there, vote back to your car,
and record time. And they did do that, and it
did happen the way they worried it would happen. Some
of these oh we're sorry, you can't vote here. They
were mobilizing NonStop in that election, and Charlie Kirk was
just I just feel like I do when we heard
(09:05):
about Andrew Breitbart and when he passed away and there
was no replacing him. I feel the same way about
rush Limbaugh there that many have said that Charlie Kirk
was to young people there Rush Limbaugh, Yeah, and you
just we won't replace him. We're gonna try, We're gonna
have other voices that all emerge. But what an incredible,
incredible loss.
Speaker 4 (09:24):
Yeah, yeah, Well, his reach, the numbers of the people
who follow him, turning Point USA, the conventions that he holds,
the turnout that he gets, and I have always been
so impressed with him greg that he was able to
engage young people. I mean, if you've ever been to
his event, he would sit there on a chair with
a microphone, there being a microphone maybe ten feet away,
(09:46):
and people could come up and ask him questions. Never
had any notes, He just shared his opinion. Sometimes those
discussions got heated, but at least the discussions were taking place. Unfortunately,
not enough of that type of discussion is taking place
on our college campuses or even in the general public today,
and it needs to take place, and Charlie Kirk was
(10:08):
trying to do that.
Speaker 2 (10:08):
Well, I'll tell you what's going through the minds of
young people, and some might be my kids. Charlie Kirk
wasn't seen as an elected official. He wasn't He didn't
own a business or corporation, he didn't have a vested interest.
He was a voice, and they saw him as someone
who just wanted to really have that debate. And now
they ask themselves, are we allowed to have that opinion?
I've read this today from young people. Can we have
(10:30):
an opinion if Charlie Kirk gets gets killed assassinated today
for having this opinion? That's different than what we're supposed
to have are we allowed to have it? And I
think that the reason he was killed today is for
this very purpose, to create a quieting or a chilling
effect for the diversity of thought and for this discussion.
(10:52):
He was not assassinated because he wasn't impact because he
wasn't impactful. He was impactful. He was making a difference.
What the takeaway for many young people today is seeing
this happen and roll out in such a horrific form
or fashion, is well, where does that leave me? Where
should I? Should I really even be doing this? And
that is what It just breaks my heart that we
(11:15):
would be in a spot like that.
Speaker 4 (11:17):
We've got a lot to say today, and we know
you do as well. We're waiting for this news conference
to get underway. We'll break right now, e Ray and
then come back with this news conference here on Utah's
Talk Radio one oh five nine.
Speaker 1 (11:27):
Knra coin will be a million dollars in twenty thirty.
Speaker 5 (11:30):
Well I can't, but I can guarantee you you'll save
a lot of money on blinds and might come give you.
Speaker 4 (11:35):
The latest news on the assassination of Charlie Kirk. It
took place today at the campus of Utah Valley University
as his America comeback tour was just getting underway and
he was shot. It appears to be, and we'll get
more information on this in just a minute, we hope
from someone perched on a roof using a rifle with
(11:55):
a single shot, hitting him in the neck and killing
him a short time later, after he was rushed to
the hospital and efforts were made to save the thirty
one year old political activist. We are waiting right now.
We have latest word we're getting from our news partner
KUTV Channel two and Brian Malayhy is that there is
(12:16):
a so called command meeting taking place we believe involving
the governor and the Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety,
Beou Mason right now, and once that breaks, we hope
to give you a news conference. I'll let you hear
the latest information coming out of there. But earlier today,
we had a chance to talk with Utah sender Mike
Lee a short time after this all happened, and word
(12:37):
came down that Charlie Kirk had died. We spoke with
the sender yesterday and kind of asked him if he'd
get us in touch with Charlie so we could get
him on the show. Knowing he was coming, he pledged
to do that. He was very good friends with Charlie Kirk.
And here's his reaction to what happened today.
Speaker 6 (12:51):
I talked to him all the time, and including in
less than the last twenty four hours, and talk reached
out to him suggesting that he'd come on your show today,
and that's that's an appearance that can never happen.
Speaker 7 (13:05):
Now.
Speaker 6 (13:07):
I already miss my friend. I've known this guy since
he was a teenager, and it's hard to describe the
uniqueness of this individual. But he's a very good person,
very passionate, and while he had plenty of detractors and
people who disagreed with him, anyone who saw Charlie Kirk
(13:30):
speak so the way he interacted with people, they're honest
with themselves. They will walk away saying this is the
man who was respectful and uniquely capable of explaining complex
and often controversial things in a way that showed great
respect to everyone, including people who most vehemently disagree with him.
(13:54):
I just can't. I can't. I can't overstate here the
normany of the loss that I feel over this and
I know that not alone and feeling this way about Charlie.
People who know him and people who didn't know him,
but we were familiar with his work. He had so
many fans, so many friends, so many people who were
(14:15):
inspired by his patriotism, whether they agreed with him or not.
And I just heartbroke and he just got fun with
the With President Trump. Moments ago, we have been hearing
reports as to his passing. I was reluctant to believe
any of them until I heard them from an official source.
(14:37):
I call President Trump, who confirmed what has now transpired.
And just a devastating loss. And I know President Trump
values his friendship highly as well, and he was very sad.
There's a man who doesn't get up, get down beat
very much, doesn't get doesn't show sadness very often, and
(15:01):
like so many others, he's grieving with us.
Speaker 2 (15:04):
Senator, this is you know, this Utah is such as
it's politics. It's a small world. These are campuses that
we've all frequented so many times in different capacities students
or even as public servants. So we know this campus,
we know our state. This is not something that I
would think would ever happen.
Speaker 8 (15:20):
Here.
Speaker 2 (15:21):
Where do I have young kids right now or their
adult young kids? But they have friends that were there today,
and Charlie Kirk was exciting. He was someone that was
getting people really excited. So where do we go from here?
What happens next for the state of Utah? For young
people that were so excited, and there was a movement
upfront afoot? What do we do and how do we
(15:42):
go forward? Maybe it's too early to ask that question,
but I really have a lot of people that are
feel like they feel a bit adrift right now.
Speaker 6 (15:52):
Yeah, I keep wondering this, and we need someplace to
go right now. With hearts grieving alien members morning, it's
harder to think about the light that comes after the darkness.
But I wish I had a firm, more clear answer
for you on that. But I'll tell you this. Charlie's
(16:16):
optimism was perennial. It was something that he was known for.
And just since we've been talking, I pulled up on
my phone trying to see when exactly i'd sent that.
Right after our interview yesterday, I sent him some text
messages you recommending that he talked to you all, and
(16:38):
I just saw that he had responded at eleven nineteen
am Eastern time today, so would have been probably just
a short time certainly, you know, maybe an hour or
two before he took the stage at Utah Vli University today.
He must have just been on his way over there,
and he texted me back at eleven nineteen am Eastern saying,
(17:00):
thank you so much, just landed event. I think he's
going to be a win. Those were his last words
to me, spoken just a few hours before he died.
Speaker 4 (17:13):
Well, everyone, we're going to break from the interview with
like Lee and go to this news conference. Just getting
into a Utah Valley speaking to us now as Beau Mason,
the head of the Utah Department of Public Safety, Let's listen.
Speaker 9 (17:23):
In political infl ser Charlie Kirk was shot in an
event at the Utah Valley University. He was taken by
vehicle to Timpingnoga's Hospital, where he later passed. The Utah
Department of Public Safety will be co leading this criminal
investigation to find this killer along with the Federal Bureau
(17:43):
of Investigation. We're working in unison with the County Sheriff's office,
the local police department, and the university Police department. All
of which have been very cooperative and fully engaged in
this process. Shortly after the shooting, we did have a
suspect in custody, George Zim, but he was released from
(18:04):
custody after we identified that he did not match the
shooting suspect and was not an accurate person of interest. However,
he has been booked into the County Jail by Utah
Value University Police Department for obstruction of justice. We do
still have an active investigation for the person of interest.
(18:27):
This incident occurred with a large crowd around. There was
one shot fired and one victim. While the suspect is
at large, we believe this was a target of attack
towards one individual. There's a tragic moment in our state
and in our country as we heal. We encourage everyone
(18:47):
who's struggling with news of the incident to call nine
to eight, our state mental health crisis line. In addition
to that, our partners with the FBI will also be
discussing other ways we can communicate through the public for
tips and other information.
Speaker 10 (19:03):
Thank you, good afternoon.
Speaker 11 (19:10):
On behalf of the FBI. We extend our sincerest endulances
to the family and friends of Charlie Kirk. Our thoughts
are also with the people who witness this traumatic event.
We know that what you experienced feels very difficult. Our
thoughts are with you as well. As soon as we
(19:31):
heard about the shooting, special agents and personnel from the
Salt Lake Field Office responded immediately. We have full resources
devoted to this investigation, including tactical, operational, investigative and intelligence.
To be clear, the FBI will fully support and co
lead this investigation alongside with our partners. We are working
(19:53):
on setting up a digital medial tip line and as
soon as it's established, will get that information out to everyone.
Speaker 12 (20:00):
I know.
Speaker 10 (20:00):
There's a lot of questions. This is very much an.
Speaker 11 (20:03):
Active case and this investigation is in its early stages.
We are following all the leads and all the evidence.
If anyone has any information, please report it to the
FBI or local lawenforcement.
Speaker 13 (20:13):
Thank you.
Speaker 14 (20:17):
On behalf of President Tubanez, who we've been communicating with
and she's on our way back right now.
Speaker 11 (20:23):
I say that on.
Speaker 10 (20:25):
Behalf of Utah Valley University.
Speaker 14 (20:26):
We are shocked and saddened by the tragic passing of
Charlie Kirk. We express our sincere condolences to the Kirk family.
We agree with our students, faculty, and staff who wore
witness to this unspeakable tragedy. He was invited by the
student Returning Point USA to speak on our campus. We
firmly believe that UVE is a place to share ideas
(20:50):
and to debate openly and respectfully. Any attempt to infringe
on those rights has no place here. We do not
condone any form of violence at EUVU and seek to
make our campus the safe place for.
Speaker 10 (21:03):
All ladies and gentlemen.
Speaker 15 (21:09):
Thank you for joining us on this dark and tragic occasion.
I want to thank our law enforcement officers who are
leading this investigation, starting with Chief Law and his response
here with the UVU Police Department.
Speaker 10 (21:26):
We're grateful for your leadership, and.
Speaker 15 (21:30):
Again to the speakers that you've just heard from who
are co leading this investigation. I also want to recognize
Sherick Mike Smith, who has been an invaluable partner as
this investigation moves forward. I've been in touch with President
Trump with FBI Director Cash Pattel. We are completely aligned
(21:53):
with our state and federal partners as.
Speaker 10 (21:56):
We work through this case. Now, this is a dark
day for our state.
Speaker 15 (22:04):
It's a tragic day for our nation, and I want
to be very clear that this is a political assassination.
Speaker 10 (22:15):
We are.
Speaker 15 (22:18):
Celebrating two hundred and fifty years of the founding of
this great nation, that founding document, the Declaration of Independence,
that this great experiment on which we embark together two
hundred and fifty years ago, that we are endowed by our.
Speaker 10 (22:35):
Creator with certain unalienable rights. The first one of those.
Speaker 15 (22:38):
Is life, and today a life was taken. Charlie Kirk
was first and foremost a husband and a.
Speaker 10 (22:53):
Dad to young children. He was also.
Speaker 15 (23:05):
Very much politically involved, and that's why he was here
on campus. Charlie believed in the power of free speech
and debate to shape ideas and to persuade people. Historically,
our university campuses in this nation and here in the
(23:26):
state of Utah have been the place where truth and
ideas are formulated and debated. And that's what he does.
He comes on college campuses and he debates as foundational
to the formation of our country, to our most basic
constitutional rights. And when someone takes the life of a
(23:51):
person because of their ideas or their ideals, then that
very constitutional foundation is threatened.
Speaker 10 (24:03):
Now we have a person of interest in custody.
Speaker 15 (24:07):
The investigation is ongoing, but I want to make it
crystal clear right now to whoever did this, we will
find you, we will try you, and we will hold.
Speaker 10 (24:23):
You accountable to the furthest extent of the law.
Speaker 15 (24:27):
And I just want to remind people that we still
have the death penalty here in the state of Utah.
Speaker 10 (24:35):
Our nation is broken. We've had.
Speaker 15 (24:48):
Political assassinations recently in Minnesota. We had an attempted assassination
on the governor of Pennsylvania, and we had.
Speaker 10 (25:00):
An attempted assassination.
Speaker 15 (25:03):
On a presidential candidate and former president of the United
States and now current President of the United States. Nothing
I say can unit us as a country. Nothing I
can say right now can fix what is broken. Nothing
I can say can bring back Charlie Kirk. Our hearts
(25:26):
are broken. We mourn with his wife, his children, his family,
his friends.
Speaker 10 (25:33):
We mourn as a nation. If anyone, in the sound
of my voice.
Speaker 15 (25:41):
Celebrated even a little bit at the news of this shooting,
I would beg you to look in the mirror and
to see if you can find a better angel in
there somewhere. I don't care what his politics are, care
that he was an American. We desperately need our country.
(26:09):
We desperately need leaders in our country. But more than
the leaders, we just need every single person in this
country to think about where we are and where we
want to be, to ask ourselves, is it is this
what two hundred and fifty years has wrought on us?
Speaker 10 (26:32):
I pray that that's not the case.
Speaker 15 (26:35):
I pray that those who hated what Charlie Cooks stood
for will put down their social media and their pens
and pray for his family, and that all of us,
all of us will try to find a way to
(26:58):
stop painting our fellow Americans.
Speaker 10 (27:01):
With that, we're happy to take a few questions.
Speaker 16 (27:03):
The FBI director is posting that a social that a
suspect is in custody.
Speaker 10 (27:07):
Which is like starpacation. Do you or do you not
have a suspective shooter in customer?
Speaker 15 (27:11):
We have a person of interest in custody that is
being interviewed right now.
Speaker 10 (27:15):
We do that. It's not George. That is not George
sin That is correct?
Speaker 17 (27:21):
Is there are you still associate if weren't looking for
another shooter or anybody else Relateshams.
Speaker 15 (27:27):
Yes, we are actively looking for anyone and everyone who
has any any possible information relating to the shooting.
Speaker 9 (27:34):
Can you tell us detail us about the suspect being.
Speaker 1 (27:37):
Taken into custody or where you know how long ago?
Speaker 15 (27:41):
We cannot at this point, but we will get you
that information when when we can.
Speaker 18 (27:46):
Is there a believe to be a second individual involved
in the shooting?
Speaker 15 (27:51):
At this point, there is no information that would lead
us to believe that there is a second person involved.
Speaker 14 (27:57):
We have to start with a possible shooting.
Speaker 10 (28:01):
We you can a teu you want to talk about
what we know there?
Speaker 9 (28:05):
Yeah, the only information we have on on the suspect, uh,
the possible shooter is taken from close serviant TV here
on campus.
Speaker 10 (28:14):
We do have that.
Speaker 9 (28:15):
We're we're analyzing it, but it is security camera footage,
so you can you can uh kind of guess what
the the quality of that is. But we do know
uh dressed in in all all dark clothing. But we
don't have much better description other than that or something
clarify it or in the shot came from here on
campus from a uh a location at a fair uh
(28:40):
potentially from a roof, yes, ah, I a longer distance
shot from a roof.
Speaker 6 (28:45):
So clarifying with the security camera footage you have and
the person.
Speaker 14 (28:48):
Interests it is in custody?
Speaker 10 (28:49):
Do those does not ask that. That's what we're trying
to decipher right now. So did that FBR or d
AH just anything on the Threatford story.
Speaker 11 (28:57):
I can't speak well to say that the investigation is
ongoing and as soon as we have further information, we
will be sure to release it.
Speaker 18 (29:05):
Any infuications foreign intelligence.
Speaker 11 (29:07):
Involvement, because now I can't comment on any of that.
Speaker 10 (29:10):
Can you talk a little bit about the security of
an event itself? But who was there security wise and
what happens on these kind of events. Chief, So, my
name is Jeff Long.
Speaker 17 (29:21):
I'm the police chief here at UBU and I'll tell
you right now, we're devastated.
Speaker 10 (29:24):
We're a small, small police department. We have a very
large campus.
Speaker 17 (29:29):
We have over forty thousand students, and we love our students,
we love our visitors, and we're devastated by what happened today.
Speaker 10 (29:35):
This is the police chief's nightmare.
Speaker 17 (29:38):
I'm very saddened for the Kirk family.
Speaker 10 (29:41):
I know his.
Speaker 17 (29:44):
Wife and parents found out about this. You know, obviously
he's away from home, he's here in Utah. They find
out by police officer that visits their home. That's tragic.
Nobody wants that. But I can tell you about our
venue today. This was an open venue. This is outside.
We did have six of all he was working in
that event. We had probably over three thousand people that
were in attendance. Uh It sat down in kind of
(30:07):
a bowl area here on the central campus, we have
a waterfall area and so he was kind of in
a lower area surrounded by by buildings. You know, we
we had uh some playing close police officers that were
in the crowd as well. You know, we trained for
these things and you think, you know, you have things
covered and you know these things, you know, unfortunately they happen.
(30:32):
You try to get you try to get your bases covered,
and unfortunately today we didn't and because of that we
had this tragic incident. So we did have officers there.
We had Charlie Kirk's team. He has a security team
that travels with him and they were here with him
when when he.
Speaker 10 (30:47):
When he was shot. I'm sorry to.
Speaker 17 (30:51):
See I at this point, I can't disclose that.
Speaker 1 (30:58):
There was a question he asked about a shooting.
Speaker 11 (31:01):
Was that person apprehended.
Speaker 10 (31:02):
And did you have to ask that question?
Speaker 17 (31:05):
Same the question again, I don't go out by Ris Jeffers.
Speaker 10 (31:06):
Sam, why don't Arlie hurkos shock?
Speaker 15 (31:08):
And is answering a question about the mask shooting specifically,
was that person apprehended?
Speaker 10 (31:13):
And do you know who asked that question?
Speaker 19 (31:16):
Uh?
Speaker 10 (31:16):
I do not. We do not have that at this moment.
Speaker 14 (31:19):
What late l Ladies and gentlemen, we have time for
just one more question, so thank you?
Speaker 10 (31:24):
Yeah, or question for the chief as well.
Speaker 20 (31:28):
Was it your team or Kirsteam or a combination of
both that kind of set the security protocol for the event.
Speaker 17 (31:34):
So we work together. You know, he has his team
and they do this all over the country. We all
know that this is not uncommon for them. Uh, They're
very comfortable on campuses. And I was coordinating with his
lead security guy and uh so, yeah, we were working together.
Speaker 10 (31:49):
Was this a shooter type of shock this, ladies and gentlemen.
Speaker 15 (31:52):
That's that's Those are all the questions that will be
answered today. Again, thank you for covering this. Uh we
will be uh we'll be updating you as soon as
we have additional information through through normal channels working with
law enforcement. Again, are our deepest condolences to the to
the Kirk family and and to the students who were
(32:14):
who were there today and uh, I would I would
just ask everyone everywhere to please pray for their family
and uh and to pray for our country and we
need it now more than ever.
Speaker 10 (32:25):
Thank you.
Speaker 4 (32:28):
All right, So there was a news all right, you've
been listening to live coverage of a news conference that
just wrapped up at u VU following the assassination of
Charlie Kirk. Today we'll talk more about that, get you
more information and get more get your reaction to the
event of this day, A tragic event for sure. That's
all coming up. And you're listening to Utah's Talk Radio
one all five dine k n R S. There are
(32:50):
a lot of Charlie Kirk fans, obviously a lot down
at u VU this morning or early this afternoon when that, uh,
when that tragic shooting took place killing Charlie Kirk. We
just got a post from the apparently it's being put
together by members of the Utah House of Representatives. There
will be a vigil tonight at seven o'clock. It is
(33:12):
a vigil for Charlie Kirk. It will take place tonight
at the Utah State Capitol. Rotunda again. Let's getting an
underway tonight at seven o'clock hosted by members of the
House of Representatives here in the state of Utah. And
if you'd like to go again, it is tonight seven o'clock.
A vigil for Charlie Kirk getting underway tonight at seven
at the Utah State Capitol rotunda. Let's recap a few
(33:35):
things that were mentioned in this news conference. People are
just joining us. Apparently police do now have what they're
calling a person of interest, not a suspect as of yet,
a person of interest who they are questioning in connection
with his shooting today. Greg the Governor, in his remarks
did call this a political assassination, no other way to
(33:56):
describe it, I think, he said. The person of interest
is being questioned by police. The Commissioner of a Public Safety,
Beau Mason, was asked a few questions about the person
of interest. He said, he was dressed in dark clothing
and he was on the roof of a building. It
was a single shot. And if you you know a
shot like that, does it come from a handcun most
(34:18):
likely a long rifle. But they don't have all the
details yet and they aren't sharing everything, but there is
a person of interest, as they describe it, being held
right now and being questioned in connection with this murder
of Charlie Kirk today.
Speaker 2 (34:33):
Yeah, we know we would be covering this no matter
where in America this happened. It's such an incredibly tragic
moment in American history, and at a political assassination.
Speaker 1 (34:42):
I mean, it is.
Speaker 2 (34:45):
Surreal in many ways. But to have it happen here
in Utah, have it happen in Utah County? Have it
happened in at UVU campus. I was once a student
act then my daughter graduated from that. We have so
many friends and people that were at the event, and
just even getting the videos and things just from people
that we know, it brings it home so much closer.
Speaker 1 (35:05):
And I I.
Speaker 2 (35:07):
Do believe that there's so many videos right now running around.
Some of the images I've seen that are just informal
that the FBI Special Agent in charge said they are
going to open very soon a digital tip line where
these videos can be shared, because I'm looking at videos
where you can see someone on a roof in black.
You know, I don't know if that's the person or not,
(35:29):
but it is during this some of the videos I saw,
I didn't know if they were going to be during
the if it was happening at that time, you know,
or if the rally was going on.
Speaker 1 (35:37):
You can see the people that are there.
Speaker 2 (35:39):
This is in real time that someone is just taking
an innocent picture of like a just a panoramic panoramic video.
But then when you slow it down you can see
that there's someone on that.
Speaker 4 (35:49):
You look and you go, there's something there or someone there,
you know. The question came up, of course, during the
news conference with Jeff Long, who I think is the
police chief.
Speaker 10 (35:58):
They're a UV.
Speaker 4 (35:59):
You asked about security and what was security like there,
and Jeff explained, look, Charlie Kirk, he knows the dangers
that he's walking into. He has his own security team,
he does, and that security team worked very well and
has worked very well with college campuses all around the country.
And Chief Long said, we coordinated with them, We had
(36:19):
everything worked out with them as far as security is concerned.
So questions about security, you know, this is you know,
what's frightening about this, Greg is very eerily similar to
the assassination attempt on Donald Trump. Someone on a roof
of a building with a long rifle. I think in
Butler he is about one hundred and fifty yards away.
(36:40):
They're estimating now about two hundred yards away, but very
very similar, similar in that regard.
Speaker 2 (36:47):
Yeah, and here's the thing we're seeing some of that
you talk about the similarities. So as we're I'm watching
videos that are hitting my phone. My phone has been buzzing,
and we've seen things go on social media NonStop here
in Utah. And so then when this happens, people go
back to their cameras and they go back to things
that that they were filming. And before the event started,
(37:10):
somebody actually saw someone on the roof and said, look,
that looks like somebody that's on that roof. Could it
be a sniper? It looks kind of scary, just saying that.
So there were some observations that were being made in
real time leading up to the event today. But how
those get reported or if they get reported. Obviously it
wasn't or at least attention wasn't drawn to that part
(37:33):
of the of a building. But I think we're going
to see, We're going to continue to see, because this
is only hours old, We're.
Speaker 1 (37:39):
Going to have a lot of video evidence. And I'm
just hoping.
Speaker 2 (37:42):
I don't know that this person of interest is the
person or not, but whoever did commit this assassination, this animal,
I want that person caught. And I'm telling you now,
I'm going to call the shot right now. I am
not going to listen to a single sentence. And I've
already seen it happened on the media that somehow Charlie
kirks on that he fomented some kind of hate. I
(38:02):
have been reading post after post of how he looks
to the Lord, how he looks to family, how he
tells kids, don't party to oblivion, you know, get married,
have kids.
Speaker 1 (38:11):
This man who was a.
Speaker 2 (38:11):
Man of of optimism, and he welcomed debate, he welcomed
the diversity of thought. And if I have to listen
to anybody tell me that somehow he was the fault.
As we've seen this play out so many times, this
one might hit too close for home for me to be.
Speaker 1 (38:28):
Diplomatic.
Speaker 4 (38:29):
Well, it's already started. Matthew Dowd on ABC Today, you know,
basically saying because of Charlie Kirk's hate speech, called it
hate speech. This is what happens when you spew hate speech.
That's what someone said on ABC Today, Matthew Doubt said
that today, and it's already circulating. And you know what, Greg,
(38:50):
Come on, folks, I mean, I don't know about you.
When I first heard this, I was going through a
drive through to get a sandwich for lunch and I
heard clam Buck mentioned something about a shooting in Utah
at a Charlie Kirk event, and okay, and then all
of a sudden, and I think it was Buck who
saw that video and say this is serious, this is serious,
(39:15):
and it went from there, and it's just it's one
of these days. Now coming up in the coming hour,
we want to hear from you tonight eight eight eight
five seven eight zero one zero triple eight five seven
eight zero one zero. On your cell phone. You can
dial us at dial pound two fifty and say hey, Rod,
leave us come in on our talkback line. Also coming up,
we hope to speak with Utah Congressman Mike Kennedy and
(39:37):
Speaker of the Utah House Mike Schultz.
Speaker 19 (39:39):
Again.
Speaker 4 (39:39):
There's a vigil tonight taking blades tonight seven o'clock at
the Capitol of Rotunda. A vigil for Charlie Kirk tonight,
being hosted by members of the Utah House of Representatives
that gets underway at seven o'clock tonight if you want
to join with others and express your condolences to Charlie
Kirk and its wonderful family a wife, two just gorgeous
little girls. And that takes place tonight at the Capitol Rotunda.
(40:04):
So your calls, your comments coming up on the Rotten
Gregg Show on this very somber Wednesday afternoon eight eight
eight five seven eight zero one zero on your cell
phone dial pound two fifty and say hey Rod. Or
of course you can leave us a message on our
talkback line. Just download the iHeartRadio app typeencanarrest dot com
and you'll be able to see the radio station site
(40:25):
and on that corner you'll see a little microphone where
you can leave a message as well. So a lot
more to come, more developments as we share those with
you tonight here on the Rotten Gregg Show in Utah's
Talk radio one oh five nine can Arrests. We'll be
back very short, let's say, with us hearing from you,
(40:50):
hearing from officials from around the state of Utah when
it comes to the assassination of Charlie Kirk, political activist
reaching out to people at Utah Valley University today. He
was on his American comeback tour, as he called it,
with a message proved me wrong, proved me wrong. He
has done this all around the country, having conversations with people,
(41:12):
many of them students, about their political views, and Charlie
is sharing his political views as well. And he had
been into this event earlier. We saw him throwing hats
out to people. He'd been into the event starting to
answer questions for about twenty minutes when a single shot
(41:33):
rang out and the shot struck him in the head
or struck him in the neck. He immediately collapsed, fell over,
rushed to the hospital, and he died while being treated
at the hospital. At a news conference just about a
half hour now ago, the governor and the head of
the FBI and also the Department of Public Safety announced
(41:57):
that they do have a person in a person of
interest right now that the question, and they're not calling
them a suspect as of yet. But as Greg and
I were talking during the break here, you know, Greg,
it won't be too long until they get some more
information on this. And we have Congressman Mike Kennedy on
the phone right now so let's bring him in and
talk about this. Congressman Kennedy, thanks for joining us today
(42:19):
on the Rodden Greg Show. What a somber day it is,
and Congressman Kennedy, it is.
Speaker 21 (42:23):
A somber day, and I'm so sad that we have
to talk about these sort of things, especially in our
amazing states.
Speaker 2 (42:29):
Congressman, this is You've used a campus that you and
I were no strangers too. We've we've been to this
campus many times in different capacities. I know you as
a public servant, me as a student at one point
editorial editor of the school paper there. And it is
surreal to see a story that is a political assassination
that is touching this whole country happening in Utah County
(42:52):
and in Utah Valley University.
Speaker 1 (42:55):
I just I went, this is your district?
Speaker 8 (42:57):
Is it not?
Speaker 21 (43:00):
Is my district?
Speaker 12 (43:00):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (43:01):
So how are you digesting this? I mean, how what? What?
What's the takeaway here?
Speaker 2 (43:06):
I mean, it's a it's a he really captured the
attention and the interest of our young people, our college students.
What happens when when you see a political assassination like
this nationally but now here in Utah?
Speaker 1 (43:18):
How do how do we digest.
Speaker 21 (43:19):
This Do you think we digest this, greg the way
we digest many things is these cowardly assassins, These people
that are filthy monsters and will act like this. They're
unwilling to debate on the stage, but they're willing from
a distance to shoot a bullet as somebody who has
never advocated violence and never tried to do anything that
was violent towards anybody else. He was a vigorous debater
(43:42):
promoting political speech. And the coward that is this assassin
will face the full weight of the United States justice system.
And I hope and expect that this person will be
prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, which as
governor clearly just stated, includes the death penalty. And you
and I both had those debates on a state legislative floor.
(44:02):
So I will say to you that violence will not
silence us. It will not silence Charlie Kirk. And God
bless his widow and his children that are going to
deal with this. God bless the UVU students. There were
thousands of them that had to witness the sort of filth.
But I'll say that this person who perpetrated this violent
act as an outright coward, and this person should be
(44:26):
punished to the full extent of the law and will be.
But we will not stand down. I know you and
I we've been in the legislative battles. We've had these
kind of threats before. But this is the sort of
thing that we will not be intimidated. We will continue
to do the work. The United States of America is
full of great people, and they will continue to work
vigorously to do the things that they're supposed to do
(44:47):
in spite of the fact that violence, vocal violence as
well as physical violence may be perpetrated against them. And
I'm proud of my citizens. I'm proud of our country
and the opportunities we have to have speech because that
is something Charlie Kirk believed in, and his memory and
his voice will continue to be heard in spite of
(45:07):
this horrific event.
Speaker 4 (45:09):
Congressman Kennedy, you touched on something just a second ago.
Charlie Kirk was doing what he loved to do. He
loved the free exchange of ideas, and that is a
basic American principle to be able to sit and have
a discussion and debate the ideas. Yet that idea was
cut short today by someone we don't know who yet.
There is a person of interest being questioned right now
(45:30):
about this. But he was performing what America is all about,
a freedom, freedom, and free exchange of ideas.
Speaker 21 (45:35):
Congressman Kenny that he was, and he was good at it,
and he did not stand down in spite of the
pressure that was constantly put upon him to stop his speech.
He continued to push forward. And I'm inspired by that.
I'll just say that that's the kind of attitude and
approach that I have, and I know Charlie has that.
And the terrible event is something that we should pray
(45:58):
for and do everything we can to help Erica, his widow,
and those children. But we will not We will not
be intimidated, and this opportunity for us provided by our constitution,
designed by our founders, for free speech. Will continue to
fight for that in spite of the fact that some
people will try to shut that down. This is not
going to shut that down. It's only going to promote
(46:20):
those that actually can take heart from this that we're
going to continue to do the work of the American people.
Speaker 22 (46:26):
And that's our.
Speaker 21 (46:27):
Elected officials, but it's the mothers and fathers. It's the
teachers and the police officers and the innumerable people in
our citizenry who care about our country will continue like
our good Utah people do in spite of adversity. They're
going to continue to do the good work that they
should do. And so I'll say, God bless America. We're
We're going to be fine. But this is a terrible
day of mourning. Tomorrow we mourn September eleventh as well,
(46:51):
and these events remind us that without our willingness to
stand firm against chaos, violence and destruction, Uh, these kind
of there are people out there that want to take
take away from us that which are constitution and God
grant to us.
Speaker 1 (47:08):
Mike, we're friends.
Speaker 2 (47:09):
I'd love I love the vimen vigor I hear in
your voice because I you know me, I'm usually that way.
I'm I'm a bit I'm a big gutted on this one. Today,
I'm hearing feedback from our young people. You have kids,
we have kids the same age. You know, people looked
at these young ones. We've been celebrating Generation Z and
their involvement in politics and in getting involved on this
(47:31):
show for quite some time, and we've seen a movement
in front of us. A lot of people looked at
Charlie Kirk as kind of the voice and kind of
really helping get that going. Got a message from a
young young man, that's that agent. He just brings up
this point, and that is that this that Charlie Kirk
didn't hold a position in office, and he didn't he
wasn't part of a major corporation. He was officially dangerous
(47:55):
because he had an opinion that was different.
Speaker 1 (47:57):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (47:58):
And he's asking, is it's safe to speak up and
to have an opinion in this country? And when you
see young people that they're coming up with that conclusion
from what's happened today, what is the most succinct because
I'm not succinct answered, we can give our young people
when they see this and they see that someone that's
brought them to this point is no longer with us,
(48:20):
what's the takeaway?
Speaker 21 (48:22):
The takeaway from that is with a resounding yes, that
it is safe for us to continue to promote our message.
And Greg, you and I both know that the only
way for evil to win is for good people to
stand down from protecting one another. So we will stand
with each other. And this is the sort of thing
that we take heart and courage from. I'm sad to
say that there have been many people over the course
(48:44):
of this country's history that have given their life to
protect and preserve and promote the foundation of our country,
which is God given rights through our constitution. And I
say to those people, I have a number of children myself,
and i'd say to them, I'm in Washington, DC right now.
I haven't talked to any of them specifically, but my
(49:04):
children will not stand down. They have a job and
work to do to promote this great country of ours.
And in spite of the fact that in Russia and
Chinese Communist Party China, those people will shut down through
violence and intimidation, that will shut down their people so
they can't speak. But that is not the American people.
American people stand up and fight, and intimidation and violence
(49:28):
do not work against us. So you and I and
anybody else that's willing to vocalize that message to that
person that sent you that email or that text is
resoundingly yes. Charlie Kirk's message in spite of the tragic
loss and the morning that we should have for his
life and also for the suffering of his widow Erica
and those children, and that the many students who watched
(49:50):
this horrific event, is that we will see that his
voice will be magnified as many martyrs for a cause
over the course of history, their voices were magnified by this.
And I know if Charlie had a choice, he wouldn't
choose to leave. But his voice is now magnified in
a place that most of us never will have a
(50:10):
chance to go. And I'm not going to stand down.
I'm inspired by Charlie Kirk. He's the kind of person
that has continued to push forward a message that he
believed in. And there are others that have messages and
they'll continue to move forward. So for our young people,
you take heart from this because the United States of
America and our constitutional rights will continue to be more
(50:33):
important than any one individual. And I'm ready to stand
shoulder to shoulder with you and others to make sure
that we protect these God given liberties that our founders,
through the Constitution, have effectuated upon this country.
Speaker 4 (50:47):
Well put, Congressman, Thank you, We will continue the fight.
Thank you for joining us for a few minutes on
this very difficult day. Thank you, Congressman.
Speaker 21 (50:55):
Thanks for having me on.
Speaker 4 (50:56):
Thanks Congressman Kenny. All right, we've got some calls coming in.
We'll take a quick break and then come back with
your thoughts. If you were there, we'd love to hear
from you your thoughts on this, but Jen, your your
general feelings on this very very sad day. The Right
and Greg Show continue on Talk Radio one oh five
nine Kanas. A lot of you called in with Sean
earlier today and we want to hear from you as well,
(51:17):
to share your thoughts on this. We begin in woods
Cross tonight with Tyler. Tyler, how are you welcome to
the Rod and Gregg Show.
Speaker 3 (51:23):
Hi, Rod, this is Tyler. I wanted it to share
my thoughts and get it out there. I was pretty
close to where Charlie Kirk was assassinating. I heard the
shot out. When I heard the shot, it's like for me,
everything went into slow motion and his body just moved
(51:44):
like ballistic jel does when I've used firearms to test
different ammunitions. But anyways, and then seeing his body react
the way that it did, uh, is just surreal and
it's one moment. We're having a joyous, happy, uplifting, good
(52:06):
event surrounded by happiness is the way I would describe
it and enjoy. And then the next moment, you know,
you got evil that's lingering there at any moment that
strikes and takes away from that. And different people reacted
in different ways. Some people were screaming and yelling, others
(52:28):
were running and diving crying. But then there was these
officers that were undercover that directed people, Hey, we got
we gotta move you here. These are the exits, go here,
and they brought order to that chaos. And so I
(52:51):
just wanted to I think, I think that this sort
of evil wants us to strike fear in us. Charlie
he knew, he knew that he was steering death in
the face, and every time he went there to speak
at these college campuses that this could be a very
real reality for him. But he didn't allow it to
(53:12):
stop his rights and freedoms to communities speak out his mind.
And I just think we can't allow things like this
to make us fear and to not allow us to
speak up. Yeah, you're to continue to live our lives.
Speaker 4 (53:29):
You're exactly right, Tyler. Thank you for that description.
Speaker 3 (53:32):
And you're right.
Speaker 4 (53:33):
I've been in a shooting situation a long time.
Speaker 13 (53:35):
Ago.
Speaker 4 (53:36):
First responders came in and they know what they're doing
and they really did help people today and it's a
sad day. Back to the phones we go. Let's go
to Nick and Tuilla. Nick, how are you welcome to
the Rod and Gregg Show.
Speaker 7 (53:48):
Thank you.
Speaker 23 (53:49):
It's a sad day for Utah and my heartfelt condolences
and prayers go out to the Charlie Kirk family. And
I just can't believe that what happened in this state
and as many Christian people that we have in this
(54:11):
state of Utah, that it would happen here, and it's
just unbelievable.
Speaker 4 (54:15):
It is unbelievable. Nick, thank you very very much. All Right,
we've got a lot of calls coming in. We need
to take a break and we'll get back to your comments.
We do want to hear from you tonight. It's the
time to reflect and process the events of this day.
More coming up on the Rod and Greg Show in
Utah's Talk Radio one O five nine k nrs. Joining
us on our news make a line right now to
talk briefly. We've got a lot of calls. We'll get
(54:35):
to those in just a second. What we wanted to
bring on Speaker Mike Schultz, Speaker Shults, how are you?
Thanks for joining us on a very sad day.
Speaker 13 (54:42):
Speaker Shoultz, it is a sad day, Rob and Greg,
but I'm grateful to be here with you and talk
about the political assassination. And that's exactly what this was today,
the political assassination of Charlie Kirk. But what a sad
day for Utah and even a Saturday for our nation
and the conservative movement across across the nation and and
(55:05):
certainly here in the state.
Speaker 2 (55:07):
As we've been on the program, as Speaker Schultz, we
saw that the House of Representative State House of Representatives
at the Capital Rotunda is looking to hold a vigil
for Charlie Kirk tonight. Maybe you could share their listeners
with some details.
Speaker 13 (55:20):
Yeah, so it'll be tonight in the Rodtenda seven o'clock PM.
Speaker 8 (55:24):
Encourage everybody to go. I had a couple of great.
Speaker 13 (55:27):
Members that are pulling this together and uh so we
we we we love the conservative movement that's happened across
the country. I mean, do you think of what Charlie
Kirk has done for to keep conservativeism here in our country?
And you know he is scheduled for two appearances, you know,
in Utah, one certainly today kicking off the tour, and
(55:49):
then another one later later the month, later in the
month at Utah State University. And uh, it's uh, he's
made a lot, a great deal to US conservatives in
the state of Utah.
Speaker 1 (56:00):
And it is a tragic day, speakers Folds.
Speaker 4 (56:03):
He was the future for the conservative movement in this country,
wasn't he He's one of He's part of the future.
Speaker 13 (56:10):
He absolutely was. And you look at what he did,
and you know, Trump, President Trump won more of the
college age vote than a Republican has in decades.
Speaker 8 (56:21):
And uh, that.
Speaker 13 (56:23):
That tells you how effective Charlie Kirk was. And it's honestly,
it's the reason why the left wanted to silence him.
And that's what happened today. That's what the left is
trying to do. The Party of supposed tolerance, they're anything
but tolerance. This is not about tolerance. This is about
silencing those that disagree with him. And that's what happened
(56:45):
today with Charlie Kirk. But they're not going to get
away with it. They will not get away with it.
We will not go away. We will keep speaking the truth.
I'm positive that there will be somebody new rise up
under this and and come out and continue to teach
our young people the truth and spread the conservative message.
Speaker 2 (57:04):
Speaker Mike Schultz, State Speaker of the House, holding a
vigil tonight a capital State Capital in the rotunda. Thank
you for joining us, and thanks for giving our listeners
a heads up on the event tonight, remembering Charlie Kirk.
Speaker 8 (57:17):
Sure encourage everybody to go please all right, all.
Speaker 4 (57:20):
Right, Speaker Mike Shultz. All right, let's get back to
the phone. Calls again that vigil tonight, A vigil for
Charlie Kirk, seven o'clock at the Capitol Rotunda.
Speaker 1 (57:27):
To the phone.
Speaker 4 (57:27):
As we go, we head to Harriman and here what
Victor has to say tonight on this very sad day. Victor,
Welcome to the Roden Greg Show.
Speaker 12 (57:35):
Hi, thank you. I just wanted to make a comment.
I just wondered, what where's the stability at Why is
it that across the aisle there has to be that division.
You mean to tell me when the Speaker of the
House decides to have a moment of silence because of
(57:58):
it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter whether he's republicat or Dan.
What I'm saying is there should have been some kind
of you know what, You're absolutely right, Let's have a
moment of silence. I'm so sorry about what had happened.
Why not do that? Why have all this division? I
am so ashamed. I am so ashamed.
Speaker 4 (58:19):
Yeah, thank you, Victor, thank you very Yeah. Civility unfortunately
went out the window a long time ago in this country.
Speaker 2 (58:24):
Well, it's just kind of deep having this happen here
in the state of Utah, in a place that we
know so well, and really a place where I would
have told Charlie Kirk if had if had a chance,
that we were going to interview him, we believe today
I welcome to Utah, and we would. I thought we
were gonna he was going to see a different version
maybe of American campuses today than and he had seen
him before. Let's go to speaking of campuses, let's go
(58:46):
to Jake from Syracuse. Jake, thank you for holding Welcome
to the Rod and Greg Show.
Speaker 8 (58:53):
Thank you. I just wanted to share my experience of
I was in my engineering class when we all fit in,
and I was pretty amazed at how quickly there was
very much happiness from what I saw from my peers
around me, and I thought it was absolutely discussing that,
(59:16):
you know, people were talking about it in a happy
tone to start at the University of Utah. And I'm sure,
granted now with more time, hopefully they've realized that it
was a lot bigger of a disaster and a horrific
event than what their immediate reaction was. But I do
think that immediate reaction is extremely telling.
Speaker 24 (59:39):
I was.
Speaker 8 (59:41):
There when he came to the University of Utah last year,
and it was very civil that whole time, and you know,
there was just like there other posts that he posts
that you know, there was a few people that wanted
to argue with him, but for the most part, it
was very civil, and there was a large crowd of supporters,
And that's what surprised me, I think more than anything
that the immediate reaction of what I heard from my
(01:00:03):
classmates was almost joyful and just kind of making fun
and making light of the situation. And me and a
couple of friends around me that I know of.
Speaker 2 (01:00:15):
Question, what would what would you I know you can't
get in their head, but what would motivate them to
be anything but a somber or upset to hear that
someone had just been shot and killed in the campus
in Utah.
Speaker 18 (01:00:28):
What what?
Speaker 1 (01:00:29):
What? What do you think was going through their mind?
Speaker 2 (01:00:31):
And I think you gave a great caveat that maybe
things hadn't sunk in yet. I think you're right, But
what was motivating those initial reactions?
Speaker 1 (01:00:38):
Do you think?
Speaker 10 (01:00:40):
You know?
Speaker 8 (01:00:41):
I saw somebody I don't remember who it was, but
posted something along the lines of the fact that you know,
this violence is not gun violence, but I think they
said liberal violence or something like that. It's been a
very common thing to talk about, Oh, you assassinate the president,
I want to blow up the White House. You know,
famous people have said and made those comments, and I
(01:01:04):
think it's just become commonplace for them to think about
it like this. And my wife made a great point
to me that she said, you know, these these very
same people who are so outraged and want all this
gun control, yet then their first reaction is when somebody
uses a gun to further their stance. It's they're happy
(01:01:26):
about it.
Speaker 1 (01:01:26):
Yeah, yeah, And.
Speaker 8 (01:01:28):
It's hard for them to have that, you know, the
dual thought process of guns are good when I want them,
but not when everybody else wants them well.
Speaker 4 (01:01:36):
Great comment, Jake, thank you very very much. Let's go
to Will and Harriman tonight here on the Rod and
Greg Show. Will thank you so much for joining us
your thoughts tonight.
Speaker 8 (01:01:45):
Hey, Rob, thanks for taking my call.
Speaker 18 (01:01:47):
I'm actually twenty three years older, and I consider myself
a fan of Charlie Kirk. He's definitely motivated myself and
lots of my friends. As of late, I've actually been
a little bit critical of him. I'm kind of been
Nick Fuente's guy as of late, and I was actually
planning on going to the event to ask him some questions.
Hearing what happened today though, totally broke my heart, in
all of my friend's heart, even though we don't agree
(01:02:08):
on everything, and we are the younger generation and we
will be the future of the Conservative Party. It's disgusting
what happened. And at work today actually, I had a
lot of people to second the last caller that were
passively happy or with the remarks that were not appropriate,
and I thought it was disgusting and in complete bad taste,
(01:02:29):
considering he was not only a historical figure in my opinion,
who was also a father and a husband, and who
left a bad taste in my mouth.
Speaker 12 (01:02:39):
Yeah, I can.
Speaker 4 (01:02:40):
Well, can I ask you real quick what attracted you
to Charlie Kirk? What was it? His age? Was what
he was saying? What attracted you to him?
Speaker 18 (01:02:50):
It was really the free market of ideas, him being
in person, not just online and having a discussion exercising
First Amendment right.
Speaker 25 (01:02:59):
Also his support for Israel.
Speaker 18 (01:03:00):
Lots of people didn't really support Israel where we're that
spoken of it, and I really appreciate that on on
his front.
Speaker 2 (01:03:08):
Well, real quick, I'm glad to hear from the from you.
You guys have your age. You guys have been weighing
on my mind today. Does does this make you feel
that it's more dangerous for you to speak up, to
have these kind of debates on campus, to have an
opinion that might be contrary to what you're hearing in
the media or other places. Does this does this have
a chilling effect for you personally? No?
Speaker 18 (01:03:31):
Well, in a way yes, But I'm thinking what Charlie
would want if he wants to give him hell and
get help there.
Speaker 1 (01:03:36):
That's right. I love that.
Speaker 4 (01:03:38):
You're right. Well, thanks that answer, give him hell, all right.
We'll take a break and get to more of your
phone calls coming up on the Roden Greg Show in
Utah's Talk radio one oh five nine. Can us that
took place earlier today, shortly afternoon on the campus of
Utah Valley University during one of his events there we
are starting uh uh. The FBI says there is a
person of interest who who has been brought in for
(01:04:01):
questioning as being questioned right now, and we'll have more
details on that. But our test tonight is to hear
from you and let all of us process the events,
the tragic events of this day. A thirty one year
old man who believed in the great news of America,
leaving behind a wife and two little girls, Charlie Kirk.
All right, let's go back to the phones. If you
want to join in eighty eight eight five seven eight
(01:04:23):
zero one zero cell phone dial pound two to fifteen,
say hey Rod, or leave us a talk back comment.
Speaker 2 (01:04:28):
Let's go to Jacob from West Valley. Jacob, thank you
for holding. Welcome to the Rod and Greg Show.
Speaker 26 (01:04:35):
Hey guys, I am a senior in high school. I
am sixteen years old, and what I want to say
is just how impactful Charlie Kirk has been on my life.
Specifically because of all of the impact that he had
on the youth and my generation. And it is one
(01:04:57):
of the most shocking and most tragic things I've heard
about in my entire life.
Speaker 4 (01:05:01):
Jacob, What did Charlie Kirk say or what did you
hear from Charlie Kirk that made you believe in him,
believe in what he was talking about, believing in the
greatness of America. What was he saying that that you
tuned in for?
Speaker 26 (01:05:17):
Just how the idea of American excellence And it's just
something that's kind of like missing from my generation today
because of just how far the left has gotten into
these ideologies of just of being like a victim. And
that's something that he would never stand for. And that
(01:05:38):
is one of the things that has been most important
to me.
Speaker 4 (01:05:41):
All Right, Jacob, thank you appreciate your support.
Speaker 1 (01:05:44):
Yeah, you know, I just it's just that's what gets me.
Speaker 4 (01:05:46):
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Back to the phones we go, Spanish Fork.
Sarah is there tonight, Sarah, you were there this afternoon?
Tell us what it was like.
Speaker 27 (01:05:56):
Well, I was. It was very packed. I had a
ticket I had I listened to Charlie Kirk and so
when I found out my son had sent me some
information that he was coming, So I got online and
got a ticket where they required my phone number, and
then they they emailed me a ticket kind of with
(01:06:18):
a barcode, and so I figured when I got there
that there would be someone that, you know, there'd be
some form of security that they would scan that ticket.
And when I got there, there was no one there
at the doors. I just walked right in and I
saw one security officer that was kind of up above
his tent and he had a rifle. But that's all
(01:06:40):
that I saw. And it was wall to wall people,
and I actually ended up kind of being sort of
at the very back of the grassy area, and I
heard the gun go off and then actually I there
was kind of a breeze and I was able to
I smelled the gunpowder and it was complete. Everybody was
(01:07:02):
stunned and kind of crept down low, and then it
was mass chaos and people were running. I saw a
woman she tripped and fell flat on the concrete and
people were running over her. They opened up, someone opened
up the building that was behind me. They opened up
I think it was an emergency exit, and they were
(01:07:24):
shuffling us through the emergency exit to get into the building.
But then they had us go through the building and
they wanted us to exit out the other end of
the building. And so then everyone is out there and upset,
and we could hear, you know, everyone was talking about
that he you know, how hurt was he? What actually
had happened? You know, he was he shot? Was it
(01:07:46):
was he able to duck down? We didn't know, but
it was. It was complete chaos. And what was So
what was most upsetting is I'm older and I love
Charlie Kirk because he brings I love that he brought
in religion into politics and how he explained things and
(01:08:08):
it just made so much sense. And seeing the youth
there and their panic, how they panicked and how they
were just not they didn't know what to do and
where to go and crying and laying on the ground
just screaming and beside themselves and having witnessed this at
(01:08:30):
such a young age, and that was I think what
was in the fact that he also died, which is horrible,
but that was what was most upsetting is now that
that's the memory that the youth is going to, the
youth are going to have of going to something and
supporting it, supporting a cause, and that if it's not
(01:08:50):
the right cause, were shut down and then these tragic
things happen, and it's it was a terrible day, just
a terrible day. And but what I take from it
is that he made his voice heard and he he
(01:09:12):
had truth behind him. And I want to take that
going forward and incorporate that more in my life and
stand up for what's right and have the truth to
back me and not be not be afraid to say something.
Speaker 4 (01:09:28):
Don't be afraid, Sarah, that's right. And we cut you
off there because we've got to get to other calls.
But as one callers said earlier, as a result of this,
you know what Charlie. Charlie would say to his supporters
and everybody out there today, give them hell. Do not let.
Speaker 2 (01:09:41):
This be a chilling effect. Don't let this discourage you
and not want to continue to get involved and to
speak up. Okay, let's go to Eve in Lehigh Eve,
thank you for holding. Welcome to the Rod and Greg Show.
Speaker 26 (01:09:55):
Thank you.
Speaker 28 (01:09:55):
I wanted to say, I think too many people subjectively
choose which laws and little the society they're going to
follow and or enforced. For example, with immigration to have
a stall vandalism. Who which citizen here matters and which doesn't?
Who can speak and who can't? Now, Charlie Kirk spoke up,
stood up. He was a good man with a moral
mission and the Christian tradition. Heck, I'm seeing you can
(01:10:19):
be perfect and still be targeted and murdered. If you
think about Jesus Christ, whether you regard him as a
religious figure or not, he was a good man. He
had a good mission, he had a good message, and
it was still enough reason for and I call it
demonic and wicked people to make these decisions that destroy
lives and destroy freedom.
Speaker 1 (01:10:41):
Yeah, you're right, You're right. I couldn't agree more.
Speaker 2 (01:10:44):
And I think that the stronger, the more persuasive you are,
the more powerful you are, the more people rally to
the things that you want to debate and that you're
advocating for, the more dangerous that individual becomes. And that's
sadly the console and to his success and his and
how influential he was, is that it cost him his life.
Speaker 4 (01:11:05):
And Christ stood for what he believed. He stood for
the truth, and the truth was in him, and he
offered his life as well. Jeremy and Sarahtoga Springs tonight
on The Roden Gregg Show.
Speaker 5 (01:11:15):
Hi Jeremy, Oh, thank you for hearing my thoughts. As
I listened to other callers, my thought turned to this,
this notion in school, how they teach this greater good mentality,
and I think that's kind of causing people to be
more vigilante in their their kind of response and how
they're freaking out basically. But my thought was called the
(01:11:39):
reason why I was calling is we found out last
year that our son or a child had Down syndrome,
and was so very excited and full of you know,
concerns and other thoughts. And what made me, what made
me really appreciate Charlie was that he was out there
in the forefront.
Speaker 8 (01:11:57):
Of of of of you.
Speaker 5 (01:11:59):
Know, rejecting eugenics, in rejecting the notion that you could
just go ahead and have an abortion no matter what.
Speaker 8 (01:12:05):
And he advocated specifically for.
Speaker 5 (01:12:07):
Children who have Down syndrome, and I I just loved
having that and appreciate that it's very vocal and really
trying to change the hearts of people who were being
taught the opposite. And so I was just appreciative hearing
him speak of that and of his Christian beliefs, which
I believe in Christ very well, very strongly, and appreciated
this gift and felt that our son was a gift
(01:12:29):
to us. So I just wanted to share those thoughts.
Speaker 4 (01:12:31):
Thank you, Jeremy, and I have sil our thoughts. I
have a granddaughter, Spina Bifidah, most beautiful little girl out there,
and my son and his wife. The doctor has told
them too, you can abort the child, and they said,
we are not going to do that. We will bring
that child into the world. And we are so glad
they have And for Charlie to speak out in that
(01:12:52):
regard as well, that does mean so much. Back to
the phones, let's talk with Jeff in Saratoga Springston. I, Jeff,
how are you welcome to the Rotting Greg Show?
Speaker 29 (01:13:02):
Hey, guys, when you went to commercial break, you mentioned
everything's changing, the bad guys are winning. And I got
to thinking about this with my wife earlier, and I said,
you know, it's gonna make us so good. Men and
women who want to become activists do all the way
(01:13:22):
up to the President of.
Speaker 25 (01:13:23):
The United States. They're not going to want to run
because they're be scared for their lives, they'll still do it.
But one one thing that could keep a loving husband
or wife from getting involved in politics would be the spouse.
And the spouse would say, honey, you saw what happened
to Charlie. You saw what happened to the president. I
(01:13:43):
don't want to lose you. I wonder how many of
those conversations take place.
Speaker 26 (01:13:50):
I agree, I.
Speaker 1 (01:13:51):
Worry about it.
Speaker 4 (01:13:52):
If you ran for political office, did your wife ever
express any concerns?
Speaker 2 (01:13:56):
Of course, Look, there's a sacrifice that comes inherently with
your family, wife, your children. There's there's a price that's paid,
and I and and you know, serving as an honor
and I wouldn't trade it for the world, but there
it does come with some with sacrifice. But this what's
happened with him, and when it hurts, I mean, it's
just too it's just too much. I I am not
(01:14:18):
I don't see myself as a whimpy guy. I am really,
I am really put back by this because I really
worry about this younger generation. And does this have a
chilling effect? Because why, I mean, to the point our
color just made. What do you weigh in terms of
what you're willing to sacrifice to speak up against you know,
(01:14:38):
the prevailing voice, whatever that may be.
Speaker 1 (01:14:41):
I I just I will. It will make me.
Speaker 2 (01:14:43):
It's very sad if this, if they succeed and they
they change that. You know, young people, it's just easier
to keep your thoughts to yourself.
Speaker 4 (01:14:51):
Don't wimpound folks hanging in there. All right, more of
your calls coming up. It is the Rodic Gregg Show,
and I are continuing coverage of the murder of Charlie Kirk.
At you VU today or your calls in comments coming
up on the Rodd and Gregg Show. Date on the
investigation into the shooting of Charlie Kirk today, the governor
mentioned earlier, if you were listening to our news conference
a couple of hours ago, he said a person of
interest was being questioned. Well, that person has been questioned
(01:15:14):
and released. So there's still a man hunt underway for
the individual responsible for the assassination of Charlie Kirk.
Speaker 10 (01:15:20):
Today.
Speaker 4 (01:15:20):
All right, let's go back to the phones. Let's hear
from Joey in Herriman tonight on the Roden Greg Show. Hi, Joey,
thanks so much for sharing your thoughts with us tonight.
Speaker 16 (01:15:30):
Yeah, how are you guys today?
Speaker 4 (01:15:32):
Well, we're trying to make it through, Joey, just like
I think everybody else is right now with the news
of the day.
Speaker 16 (01:15:39):
Yeah, so you guys have the congressman on Schultz I believe.
Speaker 4 (01:15:43):
Was his name, House Speaker Shultz. Yeah, at five thirty,
uh huh, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 16 (01:15:48):
I think it was very inappropriate of him to immediately
start blaming the left and the liberals. I think that's
one problem with what's going on right now, is finger
pointing and blaming. We don't know who the shooter was,
we don't know what his affiliations were, and instead of
this just taking it as this was a deranged individual,
(01:16:08):
he immediately started pointing to the left, and I don't
know that helped.
Speaker 2 (01:16:12):
Joey, do me a favor. I want you to call
ABC News. I want you to tell ABC News. Okay, there, guys,
because they're on the TV right now saying that Charlie,
that Charlie Kirk fomented hate, he brought this on. MSNBC
has a character on there right now today this afternoon
saying that Charlie Kirk brought this upon himself. So I
want you to take that hire and I want you
(01:16:32):
to direct it to these left of center voices that
we hear all day every day, and you tell them
to stop talking that somehow Charlie Kirk was at fault
for what happened to him today, because that's what's been said.
And I'm not going to hear about what Speaker Schultz said.
What we're seeing with our own eyes and hearing what
our own ears are telling us that there is a
left of center that's happy today, sadly and sickly, but
(01:16:53):
it is true. And if you don't acknowledge it, then
you're not looking at what's going on.
Speaker 1 (01:16:56):
But it is real. I'm not saying it's everyone but
is absolutely happy.
Speaker 22 (01:17:02):
I never said it was Charlie Kirk's fault.
Speaker 1 (01:17:04):
No, No, I'm saying, go after the people that are
saying that. I'm saying.
Speaker 2 (01:17:07):
You go after ABC News, you go after n MSNBC.
You don't go after Speaker Schultz. Go after the people
that are nationally coast to coast saying that this is
Charlie Kirk's fault.
Speaker 1 (01:17:16):
You go find them and tell them to settle down.
Speaker 7 (01:17:19):
So did Speaker Salt.
Speaker 2 (01:17:22):
He's he's commenting on what's being said today. You had
two colors today that said that there were people in
their classes in the college university that were happy that
they were happy today. Did you hear those callers, those
students that called that hurt people? I mean, it's despicable.
And you're saying we can't comment on that.
Speaker 22 (01:17:41):
You're right, it's despicable.
Speaker 15 (01:17:42):
Well, we don't know.
Speaker 8 (01:17:42):
Who shot him.
Speaker 1 (01:17:43):
Oh yeah, it's a big mystery. Huh. You probably think
it's a radical conservative, isn't it. Yeah?
Speaker 4 (01:17:49):
All right, Joey, thank you. Let's go to the phones.
Let's go to Sarah Houston talk with Gordon tonight here
on the Rod and Greg Show. Gordon, go ahead, Hey.
Speaker 7 (01:17:58):
Roden, Greg, thanks for having me. I you know, I'm
saddened and sickened like most people are.
Speaker 12 (01:18:07):
But the question.
Speaker 7 (01:18:10):
Have these male followers of Charlie Kirk, which I am
one of my son, have a fifteen year old that
always listened to his clips on the YouTube and such?
Speaker 12 (01:18:20):
My question is.
Speaker 7 (01:18:22):
Where are the alpha males that were in that crowd.
There had to be someone close. Why wouldn't you as
a male, your role is to protect people and to
take care of your own Why isn't there someone that
chased this guy down? A group of those guys? I
(01:18:43):
saw several videos of young man five, six, ten group,
ten people in a group and they were all ran
and hit. And I understand they're worried about their safety,
but you would think someone from some angle could have
ran and grabbed this guy or something. What has happened
to our alpha males in our civilization here?
Speaker 4 (01:19:05):
Yeah, that's an interesting point, Gordon. You know, be in
situations like that, you've got people scurrying for their own safety.
You've got law enforcement telling him to go here, go there.
Hopefully someone did see this guy. We thought we had
a person, a person of interest who may have been involved,
not the case. He has been a released, so we'll
have to continue with the search.
Speaker 2 (01:19:26):
And I have to believe that if this person wasn't
from two hundred yards away and on a roof, and
this was someone that was trying doing this up close,
I would hope that there would be as as I
just mentioned that, it would have been some people that acted.
Speaker 1 (01:19:38):
I got. I want to believe that.
Speaker 2 (01:19:39):
I want to I don't know, but I want to
believe that if this guy was in arm's length, maybe
someone would have you know, people would have reacted.
Speaker 4 (01:19:45):
Karen in Salt Lake City had some thoughts on this tonight. Karen,
how are you?
Speaker 30 (01:19:48):
Thanks for joining us, Hi, I'm really good, thanks for
having us. I'm also very saddened and upset with what
had happened and occurred today. But as a healthcare prof professional,
my first thought was why was there not an ambulance
available and emergency personnel when in Salt Lake, when you
(01:20:09):
have a large gathering, depending on the side, and it
can be very small up to two hundred people, you
are required to provide empt services and have them on
site for something like this, for heat stroke, at fall
or whatever would happened, and there was not one available.
Not that I believe that maybe it would have changed
(01:20:30):
Charlie's outcome. Maybe not, but at least not having that.
I hope something good will come of this death and
what's happened, and maybe we can come together and make
sure those emergency personnels are available. We are scouring the rooftops.
We are more vigilant on every aspect, whether you're a
(01:20:50):
Democrat or Republican, that we are protecting all of our
people who want to have an event and get together.
So thank you for your time, and I hope something
good comes afgain.
Speaker 4 (01:21:01):
Yeah, we can only hope, and we were talking earlier
that we we thought at first there was a suspect
being loaded into a police suv and being taken away,
but in fact we believe it was Charlie Kirk who
was being put in an suv, a police suv and
taken to the hospital. So there are questions that will
be asked, and hopefully in the future things will be
(01:21:22):
better when it comes to providing service and protection for
people who are out there. Tim Ands and Provo tonight
on The Roden Gregg Show. Hi, Tim, how are you.
Speaker 22 (01:21:31):
Oh I've had better days.
Speaker 4 (01:21:33):
Yeah, I think we all have.
Speaker 22 (01:21:34):
I yeah, I was there with my wife. I really
like Charlie Kirk. I just had the greatest respect for him.
Guy had a photographic memory. He could just, you know,
recite the Bible, the Constitution, the Dectoration of Independence, just amazing.
I was really excited to be there today. I took
(01:21:54):
my wife and as soon as I heard the gunshot,
I knew exactly what was happening, grabbed my wife. We
took off running and we went into the institute building
and they locked the doors, and I'm glad that's where
we ended up because they did say a prayer, and
we had a group prayer inside and we just kind
(01:22:14):
of waited until the you know, the police officers all
came in and escorted us out, which was seemed like forever.
But you know that it's just he was such a
great person and the person that did this to him,
you know, is just worthless. That some loaner that has
no life at all, nothing to live for, never accomplished anything,
(01:22:37):
and just took Charlie from all of us because they
don't have anything better to do.
Speaker 8 (01:22:43):
It seems like, you know, it's just.
Speaker 10 (01:22:47):
Ways it is.
Speaker 4 (01:22:48):
Tim, Thank you very very much for that and bringing
that up. You know, daily colors reporting that in the
House today the US House, Colorado Representative Laura Boulevard I
believe is her name, ask for a vocal prayer in
honor of Charlie Kirk. And there are reports that there
were some Democrats in that House chamber today shouting no, well.
Speaker 2 (01:23:11):
Yeah we are, yeah, so you know, yeah, that's a
that's worth noting.
Speaker 4 (01:23:17):
Yeah, where we are, all right, more coming up more
your calls. We hope you're talking with a former Utah
congressman now Fox contributor Jason Chaffits, who knows who know
Charlie who knew Charlie very very well. Get his thoughts
and what are your calls? So hang on, folks, and
we'll continue right here on Talk Radio one oh five nine.
Speaker 25 (01:23:33):
An R.
Speaker 2 (01:23:34):
S joining us on the program former Utah Congressman. I
have Fox News contributor Jason Chaffitz, who is at the
rally today at the event. Uh, Jason, welcome, Welcome to
the to the run Greg show.
Speaker 24 (01:23:49):
Oh well, thanks for having me. I appreciate it. It's
just I'm still kind of stunned and in shocked, and
it's just so devastating. Yeah, yeah, I just I just
struggle with word.
Speaker 7 (01:24:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:24:10):
I think we all are.
Speaker 24 (01:24:11):
Jason, So you know, it was, you know, Charlie Kirk's
coming to town and he was going to Utah State
at the end of the month. I think I'm the
thirtieth and excited to come, you know, because I said
this on Fox and I'm getting ready to go back
on Fox. So I got to be a little short.
(01:24:33):
But I uh, you know, I remember in Congress being
on Fox. I need a lot of really interesting people.
There's been two people that my kind of younger relatives,
younger than thirty. There's two people. They want to meet,
shake cans and get to know Donald Trump, Charlie Kirk,
(01:24:53):
and that's who they want to meet. And so sure
enough we've gone there with parts of my thing and
and uh and to have this happen, it's just absolutely stunning.
Speaker 2 (01:25:06):
So Jason, let me ask you a question, because this
is what's weighed on my mind all day today, and
that is what you just described, and that is that
are young people on my kids, there are young adults. Uh,
there was a movement happening and Charlie Kirk was leading
young people and diversity of thought on campuses and he
did there was no there was no atmosphere. He wasn't
willing to go and answer hard questions and and and
(01:25:27):
it really did in my observation, it was inspiring young
people to be involved what happens from here. I've got
a text from a young young adult that says, uh,
are we are we allowed to have an independent thought
and speak up? Or is it just too dangerous? I
mean there's there there's some there's there's some young people
looking at what happened today and they're not they're not
(01:25:48):
getting more excited about speaking up from what they saw.
This is this, This could have a chilling effect. What
do you think happens, especially in Utah?
Speaker 24 (01:25:56):
No, I think doubtly it'll have a chilling effect. Look,
I you know it's Charlie Kirk was assassinated because he
was so good and so effective. You know, he invited everybody,
you can disagree with me, prove me wrong, let's have
the dialogue. And the message of Charlie Kirk was, hey,
(01:26:16):
we need to talk about these things, even if we disagree,
because the without it, it leads to violence. And yet
I've seen so much violence and what kids have seen
so much violent on their televisions and you know, in
real life and on video games and whatnot. The solution
(01:26:37):
isn't taking out a gun and shooting somebody. It's wrapp
your arms around him and having that dialogue and the
vitriol gets, you know, out of control. But what I
worry about is that the opportunity to talk to your
political leaders and ask them questions. I mean, how many
experiences do we have to have. I look back at
(01:27:00):
my own town hall meeting that hell, yeah, you know,
years years ago. I shouldn't have to have thirty police
officers there to protect my presence in a swat team
that's just off campus, ready to go. But that's what
I had to do. And with the assassination attempt with
President Trump, Charlie Kirk, you know there's I hope part
(01:27:23):
of the lesson is just get off social media. Like
if you live and breathe on the whims of social media,
maybe re examine your life and say why am I
doing this? You just filled with hate and vitriol. And
but the Left, I really do believe this story will
be and it's still playing out, it's only been hours,
is one of an assassinations because Charlie Kirk was so effective.
Speaker 4 (01:27:47):
True, Jayson, I know you're against a hit time. You've
got to get on Fox News. We appreciate a few
minutes of your thoughts.
Speaker 24 (01:27:53):
Thanks Jason, Thanks guys, appreciate it all right.
Speaker 4 (01:27:56):
Former Utah congressman now Fox News contributor Jason Schaffins. You'll
see him on Fox News with Jesse Waters here in
just a minute. Let's see if we can get some
more calls in. Let's go to Chris in provo tonight
here on the Rowden Greg Show. Chris, how are you?
Thanks so much for waiting and for joining us tonight Chris.
Speaker 31 (01:28:13):
Yeah, so of course really appreciated you could appreciate the call.
I do wish it was under better circumstances, of course.
Speaker 25 (01:28:20):
Yeah, And well we were.
Speaker 31 (01:28:25):
I was there in the courtyard with Charlie only about
one hundred feet away and I so it was very
up close and personal for us. But I wanted to
add my perspective on it. A couple of the things
that I thought were that there was a serious breakdown
in communication on the school's part, because it was easily
an hour before anyone on campus really was aware of
(01:28:49):
what was going on, and probably another hour after that
before they even locked anything down. So that was an
unfortunate aspect for the for the school. And I also
think that the location was just terrible. It was a
he was surrounded by tall ledges and places and buildings
and with easy access for a clear line of shots.
(01:29:10):
So I think that the breakdown of this communication and
on the school's part was really unfortunate. And also, responding
to one of the former callers that just called recently
saying that there wasn't enough alpha males in the crowd
to stop them, I've got I've now seen several videos
showing that there are there was a person on top
(01:29:31):
of a building at least three hundred yards away, so
despite the fact, there wasn't a chance for anyone to
get on top of the computer and isolate them.
Speaker 4 (01:29:38):
Yeah, yeah, good point, good point, Thank you, Chris. All right,
back to the phones we go. Let's go to Rachel
and Farmington Design here on the rodden Greg show. Rachel,
go ahead and share your thoughts.
Speaker 3 (01:29:47):
If you would.
Speaker 20 (01:29:49):
Hi, thank you so much for taking my call. I
was also there today and I was in the second row.
Speaker 26 (01:29:58):
So I.
Speaker 20 (01:30:01):
My experience. I thought it was like firecrackers because it
came from above. It had to have been a sniper.
It was just pop pop, and I'm like, no, who's
shooting off bottle rockets? And then I thought gun, Like no, no,
that didn't happen. And then I looked up on the
(01:30:21):
stage and saw a fountain coming out of his neck
and they immediately arrested the wrong guy. I don't understand.
Speaker 31 (01:30:31):
How I mean.
Speaker 20 (01:30:32):
I feel like this was a setup, pure and simple,
not only to take out an educator of our youth,
but also Utah is the model for the communist surveillance states.
They've already starting to set up infrastructure there are articles
that you can read about it on actual like regular
mainstream media. This event is going to trigger more unconstitutional searches,
(01:30:55):
police presidence surveillance, all in the name of protection. The
un actually meets at only one place in the United States,
this school, Utah Valley University. So when is Utah gonna
wake up? This is embarrassing that this happened in Utah.
He got like two questions in. He was being asked
about the statistics of trans shooting. Yes, And when he
(01:31:15):
tried he answered, he's like, he's like, oh, well, you know,
too many people, like I don't know how many?
Speaker 1 (01:31:20):
Too many?
Speaker 20 (01:31:20):
And everybody laughed. And then he said that, you know,
this isn't just gun violence that we're discussing, you know,
like it's a gang violence. And as soon as he
said gang violence, that's when he was assascinated. And I
just he was they killed them for their communist agenda,
and Utah is a constitutional kerry state. They're going to
try to come down on gun laws. Oh, Charlie Kirk
(01:31:44):
didn't just verbally spank woke college students. He educated the world.
Speaker 4 (01:31:48):
Yes he did. All right, Joe, thank you very very
much for your coming all right. More coming up it
is the Roden Greg Jill on Utah's Talk Radio one
oh five nine kN R S. Of course, we'll continue
with their coverage throughout the evening and on the show tomorrow,
you know, Glenn Beck and Claying Buck and Sean Hannity again,
Greg and I will be talking about it tomorrow and
keeping you up today. You know a lot of people
(01:32:09):
may have never heard Charlie Kirk and what he talked about. Well,
we saw this clip and I think this is what
Charlie Kirk is all about. And if you've never heard
where he's coming from or what he's trying to do,
we thought you'd like hearing Charlie Kirk in his own
words tonight.
Speaker 19 (01:32:25):
The spiritual battle is coming to the West and the
enemies are Wokeism, re Marxism combining with Islamism to go
after what we call the American way of life. And
the American way of life is very simple. I want
to be able to get married, buy a home, have kids,
allow them to ride their bike till the sun goes down,
send them to a good school, have a low crime neighborhood.
(01:32:48):
Not to have my kid be taught the lesbian, gay
transgender garbage in their school.
Speaker 1 (01:32:55):
While also.
Speaker 19 (01:32:59):
While also not having them have to hear the Muslim
call to prayer five times a day.
Speaker 1 (01:33:05):
That's important.
Speaker 19 (01:33:08):
We want the American way of life, which is by
the way Christendom, Christians, our sacrifice, our toil, our vision,
the outgrowth of the Scriptures gave us Western civilization. And
this is where I think is a great rally and cry.
Doesn't matter if you're Hispanic, doesn't matter, if you're Asian,
doesn't matter if you're black or white, everybody. If you
(01:33:28):
are Christian and Jesus Christ is your Lord and savior.
Speaker 10 (01:33:31):
These two threats.
Speaker 19 (01:33:33):
Are combining forces to come after us, and it's time
that the Church stands and rises up against it.
Speaker 4 (01:33:39):
The words of Charlie Kirk one of his recent appearances
talking about his mission in life. Greg And there are
a couple other things tonight if you're just tuning in.
There is a vigil being held tonight getting underway in
a matter of minutes up at the Jujah State Capitol,
being hosted by members of the House of Representatives. If
you would like to join with others in this community
to remember Charlie. That's taking place tonight. Uh late word
(01:34:01):
from police at this point. They had indicated earlier Greg
that they did have a person of interest who they
were questioning. Apparently they now believe he is not involved
in this and was released. So the manhunt still underway
for the killing of Charlie Kirk. The killer of Charlie
Kirk tonight.
Speaker 2 (01:34:19):
Yeah, yeah, there's this is. This will be ongoing. We
will this will not this is. We'll be talking about
this tomorrow. There's there's more to learn and more to
understand about what's happened here. But I do want to
thank our listeners for joining us today as we spoke
about as we talked about this, because as it's happening
in real time, it's important to unpack it and listen
to each other. I mean, I appreciate the students who
(01:34:40):
called in in the in the attendees that were there
today to share their their observations. And they're very broad too,
between the emergency response or lack of and the and
some of the other just details that you're we're going
to hear uniquely that I don't think will be covered
nationally anyway. I want to thank our listeners for participating
today and for those they called in at Center Lee,
(01:35:03):
Speaker Schultz, Congressman Mike, Mike Kennedy, and Jason Chafitz.
Speaker 1 (01:35:08):
I thought their perspectives were important as well.
Speaker 4 (01:35:10):
Well, yeah, very very important tonight, And of course we'll
have more as the evening develops and tomorrow we'll have
much more information on it to share with you as well. Again,
that vigil tonight getting underway. A lot of people will
remember Charlie Kirk. The thing that I thought about this today,
Greg and wrapping up the show and what you could
say on a light night like tonight. You have to
(01:35:32):
go back and look at what Charlie Kirk was wearing
during his appearance at UVU today. He had a T
shirt on with a very simple phrase freedom. Yeah, he
spoke often about freedom. He talked about the beauty of
freedom and what this country is based on, what it's
all about. And if you think about this tonight, it's
(01:35:53):
very sad and very tragic that freedom has been taken
away from Charlie Kirk with an assassin's bullet. He leaves
behind a beautiful wife, Erica, two little girls who were
just adorable and he adored him. You could tell. There's
video and pictures of him with his children.
Speaker 7 (01:36:09):
Tonight.
Speaker 4 (01:36:10):
But let us not forget that one word freedom, and
do not let those who are strying to trying to
stop people from enjoying the freedoms that we enjoy in
this country each and every day. Do not let them
stop us. And as one of our callers said, Charlie's
message to all of us tonight would be to continue
to give him hell.
Speaker 1 (01:36:30):
That's right.
Speaker 2 (01:36:31):
And that's the thing is that this will be all
in vain and it will be a worse story if
we if we were to allow those that want to
silence the competing thoughts, the common sense, all that we've
been talking about, all that we discuss on the show.
Speaker 1 (01:36:45):
We can't slow down. We got to step up.
Speaker 2 (01:36:46):
And that's the lesson, that's the takeaway from me as.
Speaker 4 (01:36:51):
We leave you every night, head up, shoulders back. May
God bless you and your family, your country, the family
of Charlie Kirk. Let's not forget
