Speaker 1 (00:00):
They get away a guru and we really have an
exciting program today. We're gonna be talking about what I
consider the number one best Mexico all inclusive offer promotion
that I've ever seen. We'll have a very special guest
calling in from Dublin, Ireland, another from Morocco in Africa.
(00:21):
We're gonna be talking a lot about river cruising today
and what are the questions that you should be asking
when considering a river cruise? And what airline is now
charging extra if you fly alone? Yeah, they've actually added
a search charge for if you buy one ticket, no
(00:41):
search charge if you buy two tickets. Why has TSA
issued a warning, a strong warning against using public USB
charging stations at airports?
Speaker 2 (00:55):
And this is a really funny one.
Speaker 1 (00:57):
You know, there's no law gets stupid, but are are consequences,
particularly in travel with stupid How do you prepare for
a long flight? And one of the highlights of the
show is I have three guests coming in to the
studio they'll be live here in the studio. I consider
these the three top experts on family travel and they're
(01:22):
gonna tell you all about family travel. And we have
teacher and military cruise discount special promotions and what we
talked about yesterday, they're flying excuse me, last week, they're
flying off the shelf with free airfare Tahiti. This is
a legitimate promotion, free airfare to Tahiti. Well, it's a
(01:45):
great day across the fruited plains. I'm Larry Gelwicks to
get away, Guru. I want to welcome the best co
host I've had in thirty seven years. Yes, it's the
lovely and talented Kathy Gelwicks, My beautiful.
Speaker 3 (02:00):
I thought, I think you forgot I was here, you know,
I how could I forget? I know, I know, but
you're so excited about it.
Speaker 4 (02:10):
I am.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
We have a great show out there today. Now, Kathy,
you came in for the full two hours what couple
of months ago, and you were fantastic.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
I we'll make this a regular occurrence.
Speaker 1 (02:24):
Well, Kathy, I consider cruising and Mexico all inclusives as
the absolute best travel value. You know, I love Hawaii.
We love Hawaii. We were there in March in Maui,
you and I with some friends. But Hawaii experience it
has and by the way, Hawaii has voted in some
(02:48):
new taxes. There's going to be a green tax up
to one hundred dollars per person. They're throwing at tax
on cruise ships, and they're increasing the hotel tax. Think
Hawaii is expensive, now it's gonna get better.
Speaker 2 (03:04):
Well, I guess it's gonna get worse.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
And so it's critical that you have an experienced and
professional travel advisor and listen to the Travel Show every
weekend at this station at this time, because there still
are some Hawaii deals, but if you're going in as
an office, you're going to pay out the nose.
Speaker 2 (03:25):
And we don't want that.
Speaker 1 (03:27):
Cruising I love so much because you pack and unpack
one time with all your meals and entertainment included in
one very affordable price, visiting exciting ports of call and Mexican.
You know, I really do love Mexico all inclusives because included,
(03:47):
Kathy in that price is your round trip airfare, your
beach resort.
Speaker 3 (03:53):
And they're very nice, oh always well done.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
They really are transfers.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
And one of the big scams, it's a dangerous scam
in Mexico, is grabbing what they call pirate taxis, where hey,
you need a taxi. That happened to me in Amsterdam
at the Amsterdam airport this past summer, and I said, no,
I know it was some guy from Timbuckto with a
heavy accent. There's no way I'm getting this car. That's
(04:21):
a big problem in Mexico. You want to go on
the scheduled transfers.
Speaker 3 (04:26):
Well, I think the all inclusives also have a sense
of safety. They are generally gated. You know that you're
going to be okay. There's security, and so you wouldn't
hesitate going knowing that was in Chace.
Speaker 1 (04:43):
Well can Kuhn you told me you love can Kuhn.
In fact, we have some friends moving there next month,
so I guess we'll have a place to stay. But
can Kun has always been a favorite. Here is what
I consider the best Mexico all inclusive deal ever. And
remember it's tips, gratuities, taxes, transfers, meals, most activities, everything included.
(05:11):
This is at the Catalonia Yucatan Beach Resort. It's rated
five star. To be honest, I would give it a
four and a half. Personally four and a half. Four
is considered first class, five is considered deluxe, and four
and a half is like entry level deluxe. It's still
in that deluxe category. It is rated publicly as five star.
(05:34):
I give it a four and a half personally, but
I really like it. It's just twenty minutes from pliadel Carmen.
There on the Mayan Riviera, four pools, lots of restaurants,
so catch this, folks. I looked at a six day,
five night Keep in mind that rates and promotions all
are subject to available availability and change at the time
(06:00):
I'm of booking, So this is what it is at
this very moment. I looked at something early summer, June
twenty sixth to July first.
Speaker 2 (06:10):
Now that's six days, five nights.
Speaker 1 (06:11):
You can certainly extend that, but then the price is
adjusted accordingly.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
You ready for this, Cathy, You got your seat?
Speaker 1 (06:18):
Beld On I eight hundred and eighty five bucks per
person based on double occupancy every time, I mean shut
the front door. That is everything eight eighty five for
a five star Catalonia Yucatan Beach, all inclusive airfare, transfers, taxas,
everything is right there a lot of good choices.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
Be sure and give.
Speaker 1 (06:43):
An experienced and professional travel advisor at Morris Columbus Travel. Now,
if you have a travel advisor, you can call him
or her direct If you don't yet have a favorite.
Morris Columbus Travel Advisor. It's easy to get a hold
of one, easy number to remember. Eight hundred triple nine
(07:04):
forty six forty six, eight hundred triple nine forty six
forty six. Now, Kathy, as far as a travel activity
you've been to, is it one hundred and four hundred
and five countries?
Speaker 3 (07:18):
We just added one?
Speaker 2 (07:19):
I did. I'm one hundred and fifteen. I think you
were one oh four or.
Speaker 1 (07:23):
Five with that, so well traveled, I think river cruising
it's my Yeah, it's got to be your favorite.
Speaker 3 (07:33):
Why well, I'll tell you a number of reasons.
Speaker 2 (07:37):
You're with me.
Speaker 3 (07:39):
Absolutely, that's number one. The food is upscale, there are
no long lines, you don't have to go through having
everything X rayed when you go, when you come back
on that, the pace is slower, the service is more personal,
(07:59):
and the excursions are included. And the thing I like
about the excursions is that they grade them. What is
your physical what is your physical ability? And it can
accommodate everything from very slow walkers to bicyclist hikers. It's
(08:20):
just when I think about river cruising, I think calm it.
Speaker 1 (08:25):
Really is, you know, I want to be careful how
I say this. You know, if it's true, it ain't bragging.
But Morris Columbus Travel is the largest cellar of cruises
in the entire Inner Mountain West and the largest cellar
of river and ocean cruises in the entire Inner Mountain West.
(08:45):
As a result, Morris Columbus has some deals that you
can't even get by contacting the river cruise company direct
or the ocean cruise company. Let me give you two
river examples. More this, Columbus Travel has a limited number
of Viking cruises. This is good on ocean and river
(09:06):
cruises that will give you, on top of whatever promotion
is out there, up to two hundred dollars per cabin.
Speaker 2 (09:15):
I mean, that's just crazy.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
We also have some arrangements with Viking cruises for free
or reduced airfare out of Salt Lake City.
Speaker 2 (09:24):
Let me give you an example.
Speaker 1 (09:26):
Jody in the Bountiful office told me about this one.
It's a Budapest to Amsterdam departing July eighteenth, and the
price was fifty nine to ninety nine including airfare. They
had free airfare for a beautiful cabin. So free airfare
(09:47):
or reduced airfare with Viking Cruises.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
Another one.
Speaker 1 (09:51):
We have a limited number of certificates with Almah Waterways,
which is a deluxe, over the top river cruise company,
that will give you five percent off and it's combinable
with any other discounts, so if they're running a free
or reduced air, if they're running a special sale. These
(10:13):
aren't individual new bookings, it'll save you an additional five percent.
Not applicable to charters, but it is applicable to everything else.
So rivercruising, I love it. You got usually one hundred
and fifty to one hundred and sixty people. Now when
we come back, we're headed to Dublin, Ireland and Morocco
(10:34):
in Africa. Here on the Travel Show. You're listening to
(10:58):
the Travel Show.
Speaker 2 (10:59):
I'm Larry get Away to go with.
Speaker 5 (11:01):
And we have two very special guests on the line,
live from both Ireland and Morocco in Africa, who are
going to be talking about one of my.
Speaker 1 (11:12):
Favorite, absolute favorite destinations.
Speaker 2 (11:16):
I want to welcome to the show.
Speaker 1 (11:17):
Michael Nolan, a good friend of ours, a tour guide
and tour host in Ireland for thirty seven years. And
of course Mark Folbo, who is currently with a group
in Morocco, Africa. Mark Michael, Welcome to the Travel.
Speaker 2 (11:33):
Shows, Larry. Great to be with you now.
Speaker 1 (11:36):
Michael, you've been a tour guide in Ireland the Emerald Isle.
Speaker 2 (11:41):
For thirty seven years.
Speaker 1 (11:43):
You know, Ireland seems to capture people. It's just there's
something that grabs it that after you leave, you're planning
your next trip to return. What is it that is
so special and captivating about your home country of Ireland?
Speaker 4 (12:00):
Our country, our country, the scenery, the spectaclar the people
are spectacular. Maybe I'm biased. I am biased. Irish people
are friendly. We do have a downside now and again,
but not too often. The Irish people welcome the Americans.
(12:21):
Why you're going to ask why people have asked that
for years. First of all, American was the first country
to recognize the Irish Republic, and we thank you for that.
We'erever grateful. But also the Irish immigrants during the famine
nine million people population of nine million people, over one
(12:45):
point five million people died of starvation, one point five emigrants,
mainly to the United States.
Speaker 1 (12:54):
I was going to say, Saint Patrick's Day is a
massive celebration here in the United States.
Speaker 4 (13:02):
On in Ireland. You probably celebrated in New York, bigger
than we do in Dublin, obviously because of the population.
But Saint Patrick, of course introduced Christianity. People assume the
shamrock is the national symbol of Ireland. It's not. It's
the symbol of Saint Patrick. He introduced Christianity. The symbol
(13:24):
is the three leaf shamrock.
Speaker 1 (13:27):
It's a great heritage. Now you mentioned that the Irish
people have an affinity for Americans.
Speaker 2 (13:33):
I got to ask you straightforward question.
Speaker 1 (13:36):
Yes that there's been a lot of political discussion about tariffs,
proposed tariffs from the current US administration, and we get
asked here at Morris Columbus travel are Europeans, including Irish,
are they down on Americans because of tariffs?
Speaker 2 (13:57):
Is there any truth to that? Have you seen anything
like that?
Speaker 4 (14:01):
I haven't experienced it.
Speaker 2 (14:03):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (14:03):
One of my none of my visitors from the United States,
I've just finished with a tour from Innneapolis and they
went back extremely happy and as you said, they want
to return, and I've got three interviews from them.
Speaker 2 (14:17):
Now you go ahead, Mark Ay.
Speaker 6 (14:20):
One thing that I've noticed as I've traveled with Michael
on one of the tours, I had noticed We're out
in the countryside and they're homes with American flags flying.
And I said, Michael, are these ex pats, you know,
Americans now living in Ireland? He said, no, The Irish
people love Americans. They fly the American flag quite often.
Speaker 2 (14:41):
So that's the.
Speaker 1 (14:42):
Scene, especially around V Day. With that, Now, listen, Michael,
I got to be straight up with you. I have
never met an Irishman who didn't have a story or two.
And you know what's what's kind of a funny. Remember,
it's a funny story that you have.
Speaker 4 (15:03):
Well, Larry, let me think, let me just let's go there.
I'm going to take you to Boston, USA. Okay, mid morning.
The bar has just opened. Two guys. One guy is
sitting down having a beer. The other guy's ordered a beer.
(15:23):
He looks around. He says to the guy to seated,
Do you mind if I join you? He said, sure,
sit down. My gosh, he said, is that an Irish accent?
It is? Where are you from? He said, kill Kenny?
Speaker 2 (15:37):
So my?
Speaker 4 (15:38):
He said, where about? Saying Kieran's so my? He said,
well's go to school Saint Kevin's College. So did I.
And next thing, the patrol man walks in order's a
pack of cigarettes. He said to the bar man, what's new?
Not much, he said.
Speaker 2 (15:54):
The Murphy twins are drunk again.
Speaker 6 (15:59):
Hey, let me just share one funny one Larry, if
I could that. Michael told me, you know, there's a
genealogy center in Ireland because so many people have emigrated
from Ireland, people come back to search out their roots
as a government center. And Michael said he drops to
drop a gentleman off there and picked him up a
few hours later, and the gentleman said, Michael, I learned
(16:22):
that I'm half Irish and half Scottish.
Speaker 3 (16:25):
What does that mean?
Speaker 6 (16:26):
Michael said, Well, the Irish part of you is that
every time you go buy a pub, you're going to
want to buy a pine of Guinness. The Scottish part
of you is you won't want to pay for it.
You know.
Speaker 1 (16:39):
I think that's more truth than fiction on that. Hey,
we're speaking with Michael Nolan, a Irish tour host and
guide for some thirty seven years, who's coming to us
live from Ireland today. And Mark Falmo, who's live in Morocco,
Africa with the group. Hey, very quickly, mark you and
(16:59):
my call. We'll be hosting the Castles of Ireland Tour
September twenty sixth to October the third of this year.
We've got about a forty five seconds left. What are
some of the highlights And I'll give details later in
the show, but what are some of the quick highlights.
Speaker 4 (17:21):
You know.
Speaker 6 (17:22):
One of the things Larry that people love. We actually
stay in the castle built in the sixteenth century, Droumold
bull Whistle. I love this such a great experience. They
and you kind of live like a king for a
few days, and they've got all kinds of fun things
to do, and they've got a great golf course. Somebody
who likes to golf, it's just perfect. They've got falconry,
(17:44):
they've got woods that surround it, and you can rent
a little buggy and go through it.
Speaker 2 (17:49):
You can ride horses.
Speaker 6 (17:50):
It's just an absolute spectacular experience to stay at Dublin
or Dromoland Castle.
Speaker 2 (17:58):
Michael.
Speaker 1 (17:59):
We're anxious to have our our guests meet you and
as you take them through Ireland again. That's the Castles
of Ireland twenty twenty five, September twenty sixth to October third.
You can get all the details at morrislum dot com.
Speaker 2 (18:15):
That's Morris Columbus dot com.
Speaker 1 (18:19):
Hey, whoa, we come back on the Travel Show and
stay tuned because I'll give you the details.
Speaker 2 (18:24):
Of this trip. You're listening to the Travel Show.
Speaker 1 (18:37):
I'm Larry Gelwicks, the Getaway Guru, joined today by the one,
the only, the most beautiful woman on the planet, my wife.
Speaker 2 (18:44):
What Kathy Gelwicks? How about that?
Speaker 4 (18:47):
Hey?
Speaker 2 (18:47):
Is it not true that every day I tell you
I love you?
Speaker 3 (18:51):
He does? And I will tell you that's so romantic
After forty eight years, can you believe that he's a
good guy?
Speaker 1 (18:59):
Crazy crazy? I'm crazy? Well that, but the compliment is
very well deserving. You know, we talked earlier Kathy about
why we love river cruising and that is one of
the hottest ticket items right now in travel. What are
some of the questions or topics that one should consider
(19:21):
when thinking about booking a river cruise.
Speaker 3 (19:24):
Well, I think you need to know first of all,
which line you're going to be sailing on, which ship,
how many people will that accommodate?
Speaker 2 (19:37):
You know, that's very interesting.
Speaker 1 (19:38):
There are deluxe five star cruises I would include in
that category, certainly Alma Waterways at the top, with Viking
Uniworld Avalon is very very good. There are others that
are stepped down, nothing wrong with them, but I've done
(19:59):
both and you can really tell the difference on that. Now,
you mentioned the number of people you will see anywhere
from one hundred in Europe one hundred and fifty to
two hundred people on a river cruise. The ship's approximately
the same size. Well, that makes a big difference in
the public areas and in the square footage of the cabin. Now,
(20:23):
if you go to Africa on the Zambezi or the Nile,
or Southeast Asia on the Macon, you're going to have
smaller ships that generally hold seventy or eighty people more
intimate experience.
Speaker 3 (20:36):
So yeah, I think I think too on those smaller
ships you need to find out. I remember when we
were on the Nile that ship did not have an elevator,
and so if you have ambulatory issues, that's another question
that you could ask.
Speaker 2 (20:52):
What other questions should we think about?
Speaker 3 (20:55):
Well, I think you want to consider the excursions. Where
will they be. Are they going to be showing you
what you want to see?
Speaker 2 (21:07):
You know?
Speaker 1 (21:08):
I think something else, I like to know the square
footage of the cabin. We also need to know the
difference between a French balcony and a full balcony. A
full balcony is where you can sit outside a railing,
of course, in chairs. A French balcony is a sliding
glass door that opens up and you have a railing
(21:29):
extending about six inches.
Speaker 3 (21:30):
Interestingly enough, we've had both, and you're so busy doing
other things you rarely sit out they.
Speaker 1 (21:40):
And the other thing is that you want to look
at the deck plan because sometimes that outside balcony can
cut into the size of the living area of your cabin.
Then you also have light windows or windows with natural light.
They're generally up about eight feet and they do let
(22:02):
in natural light, but you can't look out them. It's
not like an ocean view on a on it.
Speaker 3 (22:09):
I also think that which deck you were on makes a.
Speaker 2 (22:13):
Toa it does.
Speaker 1 (22:15):
Is it an all inclusive experience? Is it adults only
or family friendly? Viking, for example, is adults only eighteen
years of age or older?
Speaker 2 (22:24):
Alma Waterways.
Speaker 1 (22:26):
I think while they don't encourage.
Speaker 3 (22:30):
Young children, they don't have a children they.
Speaker 1 (22:32):
Don't have a children's program, and most young kids, you know,
I think they like it, you know, starting at about
four years of age quite and if you want to
bring your kids, fine, but there is no kids program
for them. The other thing is extras such as Alma
Waterways has bicycles. Now they have bicycle excursions with a
(22:54):
tour leader, but you can also take.
Speaker 2 (22:58):
The bikes out on your own.
Speaker 1 (23:00):
And we're with our friends the Anderson's and Dale and
I took the bikes out in Vienna and somehow dodge
traffic and the rain and.
Speaker 2 (23:10):
We're still alive with that.
Speaker 1 (23:12):
You know, we have a couple of Morris Columbus Travel
hosted river cruises coming up that next year, and you've
been on these. I'd just like to have you tell
me some of your memories of why they're so special.
(23:33):
Let's start with one of my absolute favorites. You know
I love Southeast Asia. Yes, and if it weren't for
the kids and grandkids, I would suggest we moved there
and you may stay home and just say deposit the
check marriage you'll come and visit.
Speaker 2 (23:51):
Let's talk about the may Cong.
Speaker 1 (23:52):
Now that is really from Anchor Watt kind of is
from sin Reap, Cambodia to Saigon, Vietnam. But you board
this ship about three hours from Sian Rep. That's the
closest airport, and we will be having a pre cruise
Bangkok option Thailer, which.
Speaker 3 (24:13):
I would highly recommend. Oh yeah, I miss Bangkok.
Speaker 1 (24:17):
And then we have an Anchor Watt one of the
great wonders of the world option along with a lot
of other stuff. You know, there are eight hundred Kimmer
temples in the Sian Reap area. Only two hundred have
been recovered that they know where the other six hundred are.
And if you if you can just fly in for
the cruise, but you won't see anchor what so, what
(24:39):
are some of your favorite memories? And by the way,
we'll be hosting that next year, twenty twenty six. The
actual cruise dates are November ninth to the sixteenth of
next year.
Speaker 2 (24:51):
We've already got a wonderful group of people signing up
for it.
Speaker 3 (24:55):
I think this particular cruise is so interesting because of
the cont rests. We see the hustle and bustle of
Ho Chi Minh city and I remember we wrote a
little tuk tuk in the city and the busy and shopping,
and then we go to what you call the backwater
(25:15):
and into villages where their front yards are dirt and
the animals are grazing there, and we actually went into
a couple of homes, we talked with the people, we
saw celebrations and entertainment just for us. It was amazing.
Speaker 1 (25:34):
I remember one of the Buddhist temples that we visit,
and we'll do that on our Maykng next year where
the Buddhist priests were waiting just.
Speaker 2 (25:44):
For our group.
Speaker 1 (25:46):
Yes, and we gave us a very special blessing, you know.
And when I say the backwater, you'll have the big cities,
maybe you'll come with us to Bangkok or see and Reep.
Certainly Saigon now known as Ho Chi Minh City is
a major metropolis, exciting things there, but then we get
to a slow rural life. What is it really like
(26:09):
the Larkham? Oh, the markets, to walk through the markets
and one of the things about the shore excursions is
they're small groups typically anywhere typically anywhere from eight to
twelve fourteen sixteen people per group as you walk through that.
So again that's November ninth to the sixteenth. I hope
you'll join us on that. We will be offering, as
(26:32):
I mentioned, a pre cruise three nights in Bangkok and
it's a much lower airfare to go into Bangkok. Then
we'll have a three night option in Anchor Watt Anchor Tom,
the floating city.
Speaker 2 (26:46):
There's actually city.
Speaker 1 (26:49):
It's on reeds and they're floating in the lake and
the city moves around. I don't know how they do
their city borders there. And then we'll offer a two
night post cruise option in Sigon. Oh, we go to
the Kouchi Tunnels, we visit the Maykong Delta. You can
just get off the ship at the end and they
(27:10):
take your right to the Saigon airport. But you miss Saigon,
you can go to Morriscolumbus dot Commorriscolumbus dot com and
look at uh click on Morris Murdoch Escorted Tours. That's
our brand name for our escorted programs. Kathy and I'll
be your personal host and tour guide along with local guides,
(27:33):
and then simply click on cruises.
Speaker 2 (27:36):
Now another one. I think this is your favorite of.
Speaker 3 (27:40):
All the travel we have anywhere.
Speaker 2 (27:42):
High five countries. You've been there, you know.
Speaker 3 (27:44):
If somebody were to ask me my most favorite trip,
it would be Christmas Markets on the Rhine, and there's
nothing like it. You may have been on the Rhine.
But if you haven't done the Christmas, it just is
such an augmented kind of trip. It's an authentic introduction
(28:06):
because we go the first part of December to Christmas,
and these cities for so many years have embraced the
concept of Christmas. And I will tell you We've done
this on Almah, and nobody prepares for prepares the ships
for Christmas like Almah.
Speaker 1 (28:26):
You know, a wonderful memory that I have. And we're
so fortunate, we're so blessed to travel the world. So
I said, Kathy's been to one hundred and five countries.
I've been to one hundred and fifteen. This is your favorite.
It's in my top three. I gotta put Thailand up there. Summer,
you know, so listen to this. I this was several
(28:47):
years ago. We had a wonderful group of travel show
listeners on the Rhine in the month of July, and
Kathy and I both enjoy a diet coke Coke zero
with a lime to start out lunch or dinner.
Speaker 2 (29:04):
I take it by an IV.
Speaker 1 (29:06):
Kathy drinks it through a straw, and so we had
the same waiter and after the first day, he just
remembered he just brought it to us. That was July
of that year, the very same year. You know where
I'm going with this. We have a group Christmas markets
on the Rhine and it happened to be the same ship,
(29:29):
the same crew. How many people had they served between
July and December. Our waiter saw us and without being asked,
on day one dinner he brought us each a diet
coke with line.
Speaker 3 (29:43):
But you remember on that when we celebrated my birthday too,
That's right, that was so.
Speaker 1 (29:50):
So what is it about the Christmas markets? It's a
six hundred year tradition.
Speaker 3 (29:58):
The cities decorate to the hilt. It's outdoor festivals outdoor,
but even the established shops will decorate theirs or across
the little alley ways they decorated. And then there are
all these little kiosks where you can buy traditional kinds
(30:19):
of things. It is not store bought. They all you know,
the candles that that turn or and every little town
you go to has their own wine that you old
wine or mold cider that you can buy in a
(30:39):
mug if you want to keep the Mugget's a great souvenir.
It's at night, so you go out and do all
of your touring during the day. But then you get
to do the Christmas market.
Speaker 1 (30:50):
And you see all the sight seeing that you'd see
in July. But these Christmas markets it's I mean, there's music,
there's inner, there's dancing, there's food, there's drink and shopping.
I've said, you know, I'm not a shopper. I don't
even like to shop for socks.
Speaker 3 (31:08):
Well, I will just tell you, Chris Kringle market means
crash child.
Speaker 7 (31:13):
It is first time we visited Christmas markets. I had
to buy a suitcase. It was all for the grandkids.
More when we come back. Welcome back to the travel show.
Speaker 1 (31:28):
I'm Larry Gelwicks, the Getaway Guru, and I told you
earlier that there is no law against stupid, but stupid
has its consequences, especially in travel. Shawna Ebourne, aged fifty four,
flew into Glasgow Airport a short while ago and she
(31:54):
forgot to pick up her check in suitcase. You know,
you get off the plane, you go through immigration and
then you go to the luggage carousel and you pick
up your suitcases. How do you check in a suitcase
and forget that you She left hours later the same day,
shawna Ebourne remembered that she had a suitcase.
Speaker 2 (32:16):
She went back.
Speaker 1 (32:17):
She went to the lost and found police showed up
and arrested her and threw her at handcuffs.
Speaker 2 (32:22):
Why in this is we're stupid?
Speaker 1 (32:26):
In her suitcase was marijuana and drugs worth one hundred
and twenty thousand dollars US. How do you carry drugs
across the Atlantic and forget they're in a suitcase? Yeah,
Like I said, there's no law against stupid. Well sad
(32:46):
day in the airline industry. I think the culture of
Southwest Airlines may be lost forever. What a wonderful chic airlines.
Speaker 3 (32:58):
I'm such a good alternative. If you knew you didn't
have to pay, you were willing to wait in line.
But no more.
Speaker 1 (33:07):
Well, you know the day after Thanksgiving is called Black Friday.
Well I'm renaming are this past Wednesday of the week
we're in as Black Wednesday, May twenty eighth. Southwest Airlines
customers will be required to pay extra for check baggage.
Speaker 2 (33:26):
You know, they always gave you two bags.
Speaker 1 (33:28):
Up to fifty pounds, and it was it was a
game changer to fly Southwest Airlines. They were a fun
airline and they're no fun anymore. First check bag or
costa thirty five bucks. Second check bag for the same
past year is going to cost you forty five dollars.
Speaker 2 (33:50):
They've done away with it.
Speaker 1 (33:52):
And they also have changed their rapid rewards program. Miles
that did not expire now some have an expiration date.
Speaker 2 (34:04):
Now.
Speaker 1 (34:04):
The airline did unveil plans to implement as sign seating
and add premium seats that would be for you, Kathy
with extra leg room.
Speaker 3 (34:17):
Why do you think they did this?
Speaker 1 (34:19):
They had an investment group by two billion dollars as in,
with a b of Southwest stock, get some board seats,
try to force the CEOT. These are investment companies that
will buy a share, either a controlling share or in
this case and a significant influence share of an airline,
(34:42):
make changes, try to raise the stock, and then just
dump it and get out. It's a profit, and you know,
there's nothing wrong with it. We all want to make
a profit. But in my view, they've gutted Southwest Airlines.
It's not the same anymore. What's the difference between Southwest
now and say United Jet, Blue Delta American, where people.
Speaker 3 (35:09):
Would choose that airline over the others because of those perks.
Now they're gonna lose, They're gonna lose.
Speaker 1 (35:19):
Ridership all right now, the Getaway Guru, the ultimate sleuth
of all travel news, whoa Yes, Delta Airlines is quietly,
but of course I will tell you about it. Quietly
adds a solo flyer surcharge up to seventy percent more
(35:43):
per ticket if you're flying alone now Delta, right now,
Delta Airlines, according to reports, now sometimes not always, sometimes
charges you more if you're traveling alone at a second
passenger and the fair drug. Now it's written right there
in the fare rules for some of their least expensive fares.
(36:06):
What they want is they don't want business travelers buying
the el chipo, the formerly called you know, basic economy.
They so if it's one person looking for the cheap,
cheap fare, they're trying to get the business travelers to
pay more. And I think this is Delta's new way
(36:27):
to segment business travelers in order to charge them more.
But you know, solo travelers are leisure travelers. Also, let
me give you an example, a recent example. Delta is
charging at least one hundred and ninety nine dollars for
one passenger on a one way flight from Minneapolis to
(36:49):
Miami in early September. It be a great time to
catch a cruise. But so that's one ninety nine for
one passenger. But if two passengers go on the very
same date, the very same Delta flight is just one
hundred and eighteen dollars per person.
Speaker 3 (37:06):
That is very significant.
Speaker 1 (37:08):
It really is. Now why it's not widespread yet. The
discount for the two plus travelers, or pricing penalty as
I like to call it for those fighting solo, doesn't
appear to be a glitch in the system. Delta indicates
its buy design in their fare rules, where airlines carve
(37:29):
out requirements and exceptions in order to sell tickets at
a significant price. Hey, TSA has warned don't use a
public USB charging port at the airports. There's been a
lot of problems with malware and hacking. Hackers can install
(37:50):
malware at the USB port ports and rob all your
personal data. Hey, well, listen, stay tuned for hour number
two of the Travel Show.
Speaker 2 (38:07):
Welcome back to I'll Remember two.
Speaker 1 (38:09):
Of the Travel Show in the nest two hours in radio,
I'm Larry Gelwicks.
Speaker 2 (38:13):
That get away Guru joined today by.
Speaker 1 (38:15):
The lovely and tellented Kathy Glwick is the most beautiful
woman I've ever known.
Speaker 3 (38:20):
Okay, I'm feeling really good over here. And I met
on a blind date and I opened the door.
Speaker 2 (38:27):
That was the first miracle.
Speaker 1 (38:28):
But the second miracle you agreed to go out with
me a second time.
Speaker 2 (38:32):
And that was a rare occurrence in my dating life.
Speaker 3 (38:35):
Story about that sometime because you called me batn day
and wanted me to go out immediately read your lives please.
I was there too.
Speaker 2 (38:46):
Let's go.
Speaker 1 (38:47):
Okay, very good anyway. Good to have you with Kathy.
The Travel show is sponsored by Morris Columbus Travel, where
you always travel more and pay less. You can talk
to the travel experts at Morris Columbus. Look at the
website Morriscolumbus dot com morriscolumbus dot com. If you want
(39:07):
to look at any of the group tours we've been
talking about or others, scroll down on the homepage and
click on Morris Murdoch Escorted Tours. That's the brand name
of the escorted tours that are arranged by Morris Columbus Travel,
(39:28):
and then you click on cruises or a geographic area
you know, one of the things Kathy we hear about
often is well, that's a long flight. And I tell people,
you know, I've said to people like going to Asia,
there's no way to sugarcoat it. Yes, it's a long flight,
(39:51):
but the discomfort of a long flight is so quickly
forgotten with the adventures and excitement that we have. How
would you counsel people, Kathy on preparing for a long flight.
Speaker 3 (40:07):
Well, I can tell you how I do it. And
I consider a long haul flight to be anything over
six hours. And I am all about comfort, and so
I have my carry on that pretty much is full
of the things that make me comfortable. I'll start with
(40:28):
a list. Some of these you will relate to, some
of them you won't. But you never know if the
pilot and crew are going to keep the plane cold
or warm. So dressing in layers if you could, If
you have a T shirt on and a sweatshirt or
a sweater or something that you can put on or
(40:49):
take off, that's the first thing please wear. If it's
a long win. Those compression socks. You do not want
to get off the plane and have ankles that are twice.
Speaker 1 (41:01):
The vain thrombosis is a real thing, particularly as we
get older, which of course you and I don't age.
Speaker 3 (41:08):
No, no, no, no, not at all. Okay, here we go.
Bring your own food and snacks, and this doesn't have
to be big. But you don't always know when those
meals are going to come.
Speaker 1 (41:23):
Excuse me, I got to interrupt you. You said meals.
They serve meals on long half. Put it on my tray,
and I call it a NORDRV.
Speaker 3 (41:32):
Yeah, well that's not a meal.
Speaker 1 (41:34):
Yes, bring your own meal, but don't bring don't go
to subway and get an egg salad sandwich or a
tuna salad.
Speaker 3 (41:41):
Sandwich will smell up. Oh my goodness, that's not appreciated.
Not a bad idea. To bring your own water bottle.
You could always buy one in the airport, but if
you bring one that you'll have with you throughout your trip,
then you can fill it full of water at the airport.
Sure that you have headphones. Noise canceling headphones are really good.
(42:06):
If I know that I'm going to sleep, I like
an imask. Now for me. I have found something called
Music Cozy, and it's an imask with bluetooth, so I
can download books or music to listen to and that
helps me go to sleep much more comfortable.
Speaker 1 (42:28):
If you listen to a podcast of one of my
travel show, okay, I will put you to sleep immediately.
Speaker 3 (42:34):
Well, everybody already has those downloaded, thank you. Absolutely. Here's
something that I have found. In fact, my daughter clued
me into this. One of the things that's helpful for
not having your ankle swell is to be able to
lift your feet up off the ground. And there's something
(42:55):
called a hammock, a leg hammock for anplane. Yeah, you
put it below, you put it around the the the
tray table, right close the tray table, and it hangs
there and you can put your feet in it. It
(43:16):
makes sometimes if we're on the bulkhead, which is the
front row of any section. I will even put my
feet on my carry on. But some way to lift
your feet the other thing that I that is helpful,
and you you may want to check with your doctor
on this. I'm all for a sleep aid, and if
(43:37):
I can sleep for a few hours on these long flies,
I'm so much nicer afterwards. The other thing you want
to do when you have layovers or when you're on
the plane is be active, get up around get the
blood flowing, and that makes a differ diference two in
(44:01):
what seats you're going to chuck.
Speaker 2 (44:03):
I think that's very important.
Speaker 1 (44:05):
In the long haul flights, I get up and walk
the length of the plane. Of course, it's easier if
you have a aisle seat in either yourself or who
you're traveling with. But just to get the blood flowing,
avoid deep vein thrombosis, which is a very real concern,
you know, of blood clotting when the feet are down.
Speaker 2 (44:27):
But it just helps me and I'll walk the entire
length of the plane.
Speaker 3 (44:32):
Yeah, picking your seat is a very strategic thing to do.
My favorite configuration is when there are two on the
side and then I can have the window and you
can have the aisle and they don't mind climbing over
climbing over you. But when it's a stranger, it's a
little problematic, especially if they are sound asleep. So keep
(44:55):
those kinds of things in mind. Where you want to be,
you want to bolt caad, do you want to pay
a little bit more for premium economy.
Speaker 1 (45:04):
That extra leg room, that's very important, you know. Thank
you for that, Kathy. One of the joys of travel,
of course, for us is seeing the world. I mentioned earlier,
you've been to one hundred and five countries. I've been
to one hundred and fifty.
Speaker 3 (45:19):
Nobody forget that.
Speaker 2 (45:20):
I think I had it.
Speaker 1 (45:24):
But I think the greatest joy I get out of
travel first is traveling with you. But a very close
second is traveling with our family.
Speaker 3 (45:36):
Are your children love to go with you when I can't?
Speaker 1 (45:39):
Well, Kathy has first rights to refusal on every trip,
and I'm traveling internationally almost every month. It's kind of fun.
I think it's funny. The kids will be saying, oh,
Dad has this trip to Tahiti. Mom, you'd hate it.
You don't want to go? Or Mom, can I help
you down the stairs?
Speaker 3 (45:58):
Yeah, be careful you don't trip, fall and breaking.
Speaker 2 (46:01):
Thank you very much.
Speaker 1 (46:02):
But you know, let's say it was for Christmas, a
Christmas present. I think we gave it to them Christmas
of twenty two? Was it twenty three?
Speaker 3 (46:14):
To there?
Speaker 1 (46:16):
We gave our adult children and their spouses. We have
five children. A Alma Waterways.
Speaker 2 (46:24):
Cruise.
Speaker 1 (46:25):
We said we will pay for the for the cruise
and the taxes, and you pay the gratuities and get
yourself there. And you're spending money What are some of
your best memories from that?
Speaker 2 (46:41):
And that was last summer, that was August.
Speaker 3 (46:45):
I remember the first night and we were able to
sit in a room where all of us one big table.
They have a couple of places like that on the ship.
But we sat down for dinner the first night and
our children looked at us and said, Mom and dad,
you have been holding out on us. But I remember
(47:08):
the most fun was being able to share these places
that we had been to before but their first time
and they're inside. Do you remember Rick Weir?
Speaker 2 (47:19):
That was yeah.
Speaker 1 (47:20):
That was used as the inspiration in the Disney movie
for Bells.
Speaker 3 (47:25):
Bells not he castle, her village, her village, and we
had them dancing in the streets. They were so excited.
Speaker 2 (47:35):
What was that movie Beauty and the Beast.
Speaker 3 (47:37):
Beauty and the.
Speaker 1 (47:38):
Beast and the village looks like it does right in
the uh in the in the movie.
Speaker 6 (47:43):
You know.
Speaker 1 (47:44):
For me, I think the two things that I enjoyed
the most. And we went to London before the cruise
and then spent a couple of days in Amsterdam and
UH then extended our visit in Europe after the cruise.
I think that so many things, but what really stood
out to me was sitting around that big table every
(48:06):
lunch and every dinner and just being a family and
hearing the excitement of their stories.
Speaker 3 (48:14):
What they bought that day, what they like to see.
Speaker 1 (48:17):
And then the other thing is seeing the excitement on
their faces and in their experience for all the new
places that we had been to. Well, listen, we have
got three experts. I consider them worlds the world's top
three family travel experts. I was able to get them
(48:38):
to agree to come into studio, and when we come back,
the three experts on family travel are going.
Speaker 7 (48:46):
To school you right here on the Travel Show.
Speaker 1 (48:53):
You're listening to the Travel Show.
Speaker 2 (48:57):
I'm Where I Go, Wicks That get Away, Gouru.
Speaker 1 (49:00):
The Travel Show is sponsored by Morris Columbus Travel, where
you always travel more and pay Less. And for those
listening in central Northern Utah and southern Idaho, don't forget
the October eighteenth Utah Travel Expo at the Davis Conference
Center in Leyton. Of course, they'll be the January Utah
(49:21):
Travel Expo in Saint George and in Salt Lake City.
Now I promised you world's three greatest experts on family travel.
Brandon Christiansen, Milo Christiansen, and Brooks Christiansen. Can you all
say hello? Okay, Now, let me give you a little
(49:44):
backstory on this, and I think only a Gelwicks would
do this. Well, my daughter Jenny and her husband Brandon
and their two children, they are Disney files. They love
all things Jenny goes completely overboard and all things Disney.
So you may remember that Kathy and I were taking
a wonderful group of travel show listeners to Japan. We
(50:08):
had a pre cruise three day in Tokyo and then
a twelve day cruise through Japan and South Korea.
Speaker 2 (50:16):
So we left.
Speaker 1 (50:19):
On a Friday, but they left on Thursday. They left
on Thursday and arrived in Tokyo on Friday and then
at Tokyo Disneyland Saturday and Sunday, and then they spent
Monday with us in Tokyo and then on Tuesday, Brandon,
(50:41):
Milo age nine, Brooks age six, we got on the
cruise ship and Jenny, because she's a school teacher, had
to fly home. Yeah, Jenny went to Tokyo for the weekend.
I mean, Brandon, who does that? Who does that? Only
at Gelwicks would do something like that. Well, so Brandon,
(51:01):
Milo and Brooks joined us on the Tokyo cruise. Two
years ago, Milo now age nine, joined us on a
Mexican Riviera cruise, and next year they're all coming with
us over spring break on a Mexico cruise. So, Brandon,
first of all, now, Jenny somewhere over the Pacific, you're
(51:22):
spending the next twelve thirteen days with your two sons,
Milo and Brooks.
Speaker 2 (51:27):
Just generally, how was that experience? A nightmare?
Speaker 8 (51:34):
Just kidding, just kidding, But I tell you, it really
makes you understand and appreciate what these singles, stay at
home moms go through, or.
Speaker 2 (51:43):
What your wife, oh goes through.
Speaker 1 (51:46):
Now having had this experience, how did what were the
benefits of family travel?
Speaker 2 (51:54):
Oh?
Speaker 8 (51:54):
Well, I think experiencing these amazing places and cultures with
the boys and getting them the experience.
Speaker 2 (52:03):
You know that a lot of people, just especially kids.
Speaker 1 (52:06):
They will remember this long after you and I are
long gone. They I remember trips with my grandparents when
I was Milo's age, and I could tell you all
the details. Now, how did this experience, Brandon, affect your
relationship with Milo and Brooks? You were with them twenty
(52:27):
four to seven, except when Kathy and I jumped in
to take or the kids club. How did it affect
your relationship? Did it build it or diminish it?
Speaker 2 (52:40):
I'd say build it for the most part.
Speaker 1 (52:42):
Yeah, you know, there's always always some tough times. Let
me say this, Milo, welcome to the Travel Show.
Speaker 9 (52:50):
Thank you.
Speaker 2 (52:52):
And Brooks Welcome to the Travel Show. Thank you very much.
Speaker 1 (52:55):
Now a question for Milo, what was something really fun
about Tokyo Disneyland.
Speaker 9 (53:04):
All of the rides were super.
Speaker 1 (53:07):
High tech, they were, and the lines are shorter than
at Disneyland or Disney World. Brooks, what was one of
your favorite things about Tokyo Disneyland.
Speaker 9 (53:18):
Five thousand lanes under the sea.
Speaker 1 (53:21):
Oh, five thousand legus under the sea. Now, what is
something that was really special? Your age nine, your age
six and you'll be ten in just a few months.
What is something really special about being on a cruise?
Speaker 9 (53:38):
Well, they're uh so, my favorite thing about being on
a cruise once you get your own room, a room
to your home, to just yourself, yeah and your family.
Speaker 1 (53:52):
You do that, how about you, Brooks? Something you really
enjoyed on the.
Speaker 2 (53:56):
Cruise getting to know new people you made.
Speaker 1 (53:59):
So I'm really good friends from Australia and you exchanged
addresses and your pen pals. Now, what is something you
really enjoyed about Japan? And I should mention that Brandon
is Japanese American and so my grandsons are Japanese American,
of which we're very proud.
Speaker 2 (54:18):
What is something you really liked about Japan?
Speaker 9 (54:21):
Milo, h There was just color everywhere. It looked like
we were living in the future.
Speaker 1 (54:29):
I remember one thing you said to me, I love it.
I don't want to go home. They call me Papa Papa.
Even the clouds in Japan are better. Now, Brooks, I
remember something you told me that you really love about Japan.
You said ramen And I said to you, you mean
the broth or the noodles. You said both. This is
(54:52):
a direct quote from a six year old. But the
noodles in Japan have more texture they do, and I said,
you mean they're chewire. These are things that kids will
remember the restaurant. Tell me very quickly about the kids club.
Speaker 9 (55:09):
It was super fun. The instructors were really nice, and
there were a lot of things to do, and each
day had its own theme.
Speaker 1 (55:18):
Now, Brooks, what was it like being with dad for
two weeks? Every day, all day was pretty fun, wasn't it?
Speaker 9 (55:25):
Yes? Because he whenever I got into the pool, he
gave me ice cream.
Speaker 1 (55:34):
What about you? What was it like being with dad
twenty four to seven? I can't hear you. Oh, come on,
you're being silly. You're being silly.
Speaker 9 (55:46):
It was actually really great.
Speaker 1 (55:48):
It was really really great, Brandon. How does family travel work?
I mean, how does it build relationships?
Speaker 8 (55:59):
I mean, yeah, yeah, you're like I said, you're you're
seeing amazing sights all you know that so many people
don't get to and you get to experience that together.
Speaker 2 (56:09):
A lot of fun, really fun.
Speaker 1 (56:12):
Hey, listen, Milo and Brooks. Your grandparents, Grammy and granddad
are listening in on Katie XU and Saint George.
Speaker 2 (56:19):
Why don't you give him a shout out.
Speaker 9 (56:24):
I'm so excited to see you in Tamma.
Speaker 2 (56:27):
Hey more Brooks quickly.
Speaker 1 (56:32):
When we've come back on the travel Sure, wasn't that
a fun segment? I thank you for indulging me with
having two of my grandsons.
Speaker 2 (56:53):
You know, they just love cruising.
Speaker 1 (56:55):
We've done family vacations to Oceanside, California. We have Deer
dear dear friend that has a kind of a vacation
house down there and they've been very generous allowing our
family to come so many things. There are memories, my
greatest memories growing up and I grew up in California,
in San Francisco. I think back to family vacations. I
(57:18):
think back to travel that my grandparents took us on,
and Kathy, you've told me a lot about that yourself,
but it is it's incredible. Let me tell you about
what people are looking for now. They're looking for unique excursions,
(57:40):
safe adventures, unique experiences. You know, you can go and
just enjoy yourself. You can be as active or as
laid back. But we're finding, Kathy, that people really want experience.
Let me give you two very quick examples. This in August,
you and I'll be hosting, and there may even be
(58:04):
a couple of spaces left. The Scottish International Bagpipe Festival
we will be visiting and it's only held in August
in Edinburgh at Edinburgh Castle. This has been on my
bucket list for Abbar and we'll be It's a land
tour and no cruising involved.
Speaker 2 (58:27):
Scotland, Wales and England.
Speaker 1 (58:29):
We start in Edinburgh, we finish in London and have
all these experiences Stratford upon Avon. We can visit the
burial plot, the cemetery where it's actually inside of a
church where William Shakespeare was buried. We can visit his birthplace.
We'll go through some of the Cotswolds, like scenery New York,
(58:55):
of course, York. I love walking the ramparts. Tell me
about ober AMaGA once every ten years. What are the
unique experiences there.
Speaker 3 (59:04):
Well, again, you have the experience of traveling through the
Black Forest, and that is just such an exquisite part
of the European experience. But then you have this story
that is three hundred plus years old of these villagers
(59:25):
who committed to tell the story of Christ last week
on Earth, the Passion Speel, the Passion Play. It's in German.
You gather every evening with I don't remember how many sounds.
Speaker 2 (59:42):
A couple thousand people, and you.
Speaker 3 (59:45):
You hear that, you read along in English, and it just.
Speaker 2 (59:50):
It just it's one of that.
Speaker 1 (59:52):
Yeah, it's one of those experience. And we know the storyline,
so it's very easy to know. Always ends the same,
always end the same. Let me mention an experience that
you may want to consider. We are so excited for Christmas,
last year, twenty twenty four, Kathy and I gave our
entire family, the married adult children. We have five children,
(01:00:15):
they're all married, all doing well, all happy, and all
of our grandchildren. We have a April twenty twenty six.
I call it Spring Break escape cruise. Now for most
of the Utah schools, not all, not all, but most
of them. Spring Break next year twenty twenty six will
(01:00:36):
be Monday to Friday, April sixth to the tenth. I
found a five day cruise that includes sales out of
the Port of Los Angeles, which is really San Pedro,
closer to Long Beach than the Los Angeles Catalina Islands,
some relaxing fun days at sea, and a stop in Mexico.
Speaker 2 (01:00:57):
Five days, four nights.
Speaker 1 (01:00:59):
I'm a couple can go for about four hundred plus
bucks per person, including all taxes and fees. But catch
this for a family of four two adults, two kids,
and Royal Caribbean defines kids is twelve and under three
hundred and ninety one dollars per person.
Speaker 2 (01:01:17):
That's on a quad occupancy. Now, folks, think about.
Speaker 1 (01:01:20):
Where can you have a family vacation for three hundred
and ninety one dollars five days on a cruise ship.
All your meals included activities on board.
Speaker 3 (01:01:33):
You've done this before, so you know that it is
well equipped to accommodate kids.
Speaker 2 (01:01:39):
Oh this ship.
Speaker 1 (01:01:40):
In fact, I mentioned that Milo went on a Mexican revere.
We took a group of travel show listeners January of
twenty twenty three, one hundred plus.
Speaker 3 (01:01:50):
They are still talking to you.
Speaker 2 (01:01:52):
Didn't go on it.
Speaker 1 (01:01:52):
So our daughter Sarah and her son Oscar and our
grandson Milo, who is Jenny and Brandonson, they went. They
were aged seven. That's all they've talked about for two years.
Speaker 3 (01:02:06):
Well now they're siblings because it's been such a favorite
point of discussion that siblings are getting excited.
Speaker 2 (01:02:15):
To Papa, when are you going to take me on.
Speaker 3 (01:02:18):
Aus That's a three year old.
Speaker 1 (01:02:19):
That's the three year old they've anyway, So this is
April sixth to the tenth. What's nice about San Pedro
Port of La is you can drive and park almost
next to the ship. There's a private lot there off
the busy street. You get out, you walk across two
private roads. It's an enclosed area and you're on the ship.
Speaker 3 (01:02:42):
Well, I'm thinking now is the best time to start
planning this. Mommy, Dad, you could even do it and
give it to your kids for Christmas.
Speaker 2 (01:02:51):
You absolutely with that. Again.
Speaker 1 (01:02:53):
Three hundred and ninety one bucks, two adults, two kids.
All rates and promotions are subject to change in the
availability at the time of booking.
Speaker 2 (01:03:01):
But think about that.
Speaker 3 (01:03:02):
We have grandmos and grandpa's, the other grandmos and grandpa's
of our kids.
Speaker 1 (01:03:06):
That's right now. Our daughter Sarah, her husband is from
Miami and his parents are flying out from Miami.
Speaker 2 (01:03:16):
To join the cruise.
Speaker 1 (01:03:17):
We invited Brandon's parents, Diane and Sterling listening in in
Saint George. We've invited them to come. But again, folks,
three hundred and ninety one bucks. Now that's an inside cabin,
quad occupancy, all taxes and fees.
Speaker 3 (01:03:33):
Oh, it's been refurbished.
Speaker 2 (01:03:34):
It's great.
Speaker 1 (01:03:36):
It's a navigator of the seas. I've sailed on it
three or four times. I love this ship. It's absolutely perfect.
You know, if you're looking for a unique experience. Many
of you know the name Elaine Dalton. She served as
the president of the Young Women's Organization of the Church
(01:03:57):
of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints for a number
of years. Just an incredible woman. She and a special
guest will be host.
Speaker 3 (01:04:08):
She named at this time.
Speaker 2 (01:04:10):
The special guest will be going.
Speaker 1 (01:04:12):
You all know his name, you all know who he is,
but we can't release his name until I think it's
August first, and there are some releases taking place. But
if you call Columbus Morris Columbus Travel, we can tell you.
That's just the rules we have to live by. We
(01:04:34):
can't advertise the other special tour host until August. But
if you call anytime now, call Monday, who's the special guest,
we can tell you.
Speaker 2 (01:04:47):
That's the agreement that we have.
Speaker 1 (01:04:49):
Anyway, this is a wonderful cruise's thirteen days, twelve nights.
It sales round trip out of Southampton, which is you know,
so of London, will spend some time in London, and
then you'll visit Spain, England and Portugal. But I think
the highlight is the eclipse. A total solar eclipse is
(01:05:16):
forecast for August twelfth. Now the tour dates if you
just do the cruise and spend the night in London,
would be August fourth to the sixteenth. The cruise departs
on August the seventh, but on August twelfth is a
forecast total solar eclipse. And what's nice about this, Kathy,
(01:05:38):
You're gonna be out at sea. There'll be no there
won't be any pollution or haze. You're out at sea
and a total solar eclipse. Now on board with Elaine
and our special guests, We're going to have onboard activities,
some optional lectures that you can attend, you can interact
with them. This is one you really don't want to miss.
(01:06:03):
This is Elaine Dalton and special guest August fourth to
the sixteenth next year, twenty.
Speaker 3 (01:06:10):
The name of it Iberian Eclipse Cruise.
Speaker 2 (01:06:15):
Well, that's a good one. That's a good one.
Speaker 6 (01:06:17):
Hey.
Speaker 1 (01:06:19):
You know one thing that I talked about last week
that I just want to mention because we got a
lot of calls, a lot of people booking. There is
a magic to Polynesia, isn't there?
Speaker 2 (01:06:34):
What is it to you?
Speaker 1 (01:06:35):
Because I've told people I said it last week, Kathy says,
I'm white on the outside and brown on you.
Speaker 3 (01:06:39):
You have a Polynesian heart and I learned that about
you almost immediately upon meeting you. But there is such
a gentle spirit in Polynesia. The beauty is unmatched. You've
always said for sheer beauty is the place to go.
Speaker 2 (01:07:01):
To Tahiti, French Polynesia.
Speaker 1 (01:07:04):
It is overloads the census and we all and you
know they talk about the aloha spirit in Hawaii.
Speaker 2 (01:07:11):
You go, and you forever want to go back. I have.
Speaker 1 (01:07:16):
This is a real number. I have made one hundred
and seventy trips to Hawaii. That's a real numbers. First
one when I was sixteen years old, a surfer boy
out of California went over there surfing.
Speaker 3 (01:07:28):
The last one was this year.
Speaker 1 (01:07:31):
Last one is this year. And if I'm over there
and I visit say O Wahu, Maui, Kawaii, that counts
as one trip, not three. The shortest trip I ever made.
I was there five hours for a reception. One of
those receptions. I flew in and flew out the very
same day, and I remember taking off looking at Waikiki
(01:07:52):
under the lights on a red eye back thinking why
are I staying?
Speaker 2 (01:07:56):
But there is a.
Speaker 1 (01:07:57):
Drawing power to Polynesia. I talked last week about a
cruise that you and I have done what twice or
three times? Three times before? It's May fifteen to twenty seven.
Next year we sail from Tahiti to Hawaii. We will
visit Tahiti morea right Yetaya Bora Bora, The Society Islands
(01:08:22):
will cruise through the Tuomotu Archipelago of Islands, cross the
Equator and then visit Hawaii, the Big Island.
Speaker 3 (01:08:32):
Now there's days at Sea.
Speaker 1 (01:08:35):
I love the days at see three hundred and sixty
degrees of open ocean and Kawaii Oahu, Honolulu, May.
Speaker 2 (01:08:42):
Fifteenth to twenty seven. But you know, the golden.
Speaker 1 (01:08:45):
Ticket on this is free airfare. It's really a buy one,
get one free, where the first person pays a heavily
discounted fare. Second person sales absolutely free. Rates start at
just a thousand, nine and seventy nineteen seventy per person.
Speaker 2 (01:09:03):
That I mean, that is nuts.
Speaker 1 (01:09:07):
Then you add your discounted and free airfare to that.
Speaker 2 (01:09:10):
That's a two weeker. May fifteen to twenty seven.
Speaker 1 (01:09:14):
When we come back, let's talk about a birthday bash
on the Seven Seas. Welcome back to the Travel Show.
Thank you for joining us every week. I'm Larry Kelwick's.

(01:11:09):
to do now. Earlier in the show, we had the
three greatest experts on family travel. Brandon Christensen, my wonderful,
wonderful son in law and he is wonderful. And my grandsons,
Milo aged nine almost ten, going to be in the
fourth grade this year, and Brooks age seven.
Speaker 2 (01:11:35):
Six, birthday this week.
Speaker 1 (01:11:38):
Yeah, his birthdays next week next week Wednesday, so we'll
call him seven. I'm going to give you one last chance.
That was a quick segment. What is one thing that
you wanted to say about family travel that we just
ran out of time?
Speaker 2 (01:11:57):
Milo?
Speaker 9 (01:11:58):
It was real fun. But the slippers were oversized.
Speaker 1 (01:12:04):
The slippers were oversized on the cruise ship. Oh, on
the airplane. Yeah, Delta gives you slippers now, Brandon. Milo
had a unique sleeping arrangement. You had like the flight
home from Tokyo. There were three seats and then an
aisle three seats, and then an aisle.
Speaker 2 (01:12:25):
You had the three on the side.
Speaker 8 (01:12:27):
That's right, and piggybacking on Kathy's advice, smart to put
all three of us together and alone on our own
row because then I could lay against the window.
Speaker 2 (01:12:38):
Milo slept on the floor for seven hours an hour,
seven hours.
Speaker 9 (01:12:44):
Ten and a half hour flight.
Speaker 2 (01:12:45):
Uh huhp.
Speaker 8 (01:12:46):
And then Brooks was able to lay on me and
we all were able to sleep.
Speaker 2 (01:12:50):
So you've got a plan for those long.
Speaker 1 (01:12:52):
Flights now, Brandon, what's one thing that you wanted to
say about family travel or the cruiser Japan that you
just ran out of time?
Speaker 8 (01:13:01):
Oh there's a million things to say, I think, but.
Speaker 2 (01:13:03):
How about one just.
Speaker 8 (01:13:05):
The core memory it was created the rest of your
life special, really special together and.
Speaker 1 (01:13:11):
Brooks, my favorite six year old boy, almost seven, what's
one thing that you wanted to say about family travel
that we ran out of time?
Speaker 3 (01:13:22):
I love ice cream, you know, this.
Speaker 2 (01:13:25):
Is something the kids talked about.
Speaker 1 (01:13:27):
It was and I told him, when you're with Papa,
it's all the ice cream, all the ice cream you
can eat.
Speaker 2 (01:13:36):
Oh that was good stuff. Good stuff. Listen.
Speaker 1 (01:13:40):
I had mentioned a birthday bash Royal Caribbean cruise line,
and by the way, for our spring Break cruise next year,
we're sailing with Royal Caribbean. They've come out with a
Royal Birthday Bash promotion for cruises to Mexico and the Caribbean,
and it's that's a good one with Royal Caribbean. It's
(01:14:02):
for sailing August thirtieth this year to October thirty first
of this year, and you have to book it by
June the fifth. Now I think that's this Thursday, June
the fifth, and just sail August thirtieth to October thirty percent.
Speaker 2 (01:14:21):
Here's what you get.
Speaker 1 (01:14:22):
You get up to two hundred dollars free money, free
cash in the form of an onboard credit to spend
any way that you want. And you get a fifty
percent discount on onboard amenities. That's like the unlimited dining package,
beverage package Wi Fi. They're gonna cut that in half
(01:14:44):
fifty percent. And by the way, if you book a
balcony or suite on a cruise of at least three
nights or more to the Bahamas, Bermuda or the Caribbean,
you will get a soda pack.
Speaker 2 (01:15:00):
It's for two guests. The first two guests.
Speaker 1 (01:15:03):
Now, the other thing that I like is that the
third and on this birthday bash and by the way,
nobody has to be celebrating a birthday.
Speaker 2 (01:15:13):
I mentioned the up to two hundred dollars cash.
Speaker 1 (01:15:16):
The third and fourth person who is sharing your cabin
sale absolutely free. You just pay the taxes, and the
third and fourth person can be of any age.
Speaker 2 (01:15:28):
Well, Kathy, it's.
Speaker 3 (01:15:31):
Been great being with you and happy travels to all.
Speaker 1 (01:15:35):
Yeah, you know, will you come back again? You're kind
of the highlight of the show.
Speaker 3 (01:15:39):
Well, if you take me to lunch after, I will.
Speaker 1 (01:15:42):
Take you to lunch anytime. I'll tell you a friend
of mine who lives in Strasburger has lived in Strasburg,
France owes me. My friend Mark owes me a steak
in palm Fittz dinner.
Speaker 2 (01:15:54):
I bought him that when we were in Strasburg. I
got to go back with that.
Speaker 1 (01:15:59):
Hey rat, sit up to see you next week and
have me birthday Tom Brooks on Wednesday.
Speaker 2 (01:16:04):
Turn seven. All right here, I'm a travel show
