Speaker 1 (00:12):
Sowady cop and welcome to the Travel show. I'm Larry Gelwicks,
that get away Guru, and I've gotten away today. I'm
in my second home and it should be my first home. Yes, Bangkok, Thailand,
through the miracle of technology. My friend John Potter with
Morris Columbus Travel is in studio in Salt Lake City. John,
(00:36):
Welcome to the show.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
It's always good to be here, but I wish you
was in opposite roles today.
Speaker 1 (00:41):
Thank you very much. Swady cop is the native greeting
in Thailand. If you want to say thank you, it's
cobcun cop like this and this. I tell people it's
easy to remember cobb like corn on the cob cobcun
like raccoon, and you've got it. So I'm here with
(01:01):
a wonderful group of travel show listeners. We just arrived
yesterday and we'll be visiting Thailand and Vietnam. And we're
here for the Loi Kratong Festival in Thailand. Now, Loi
Kratong is the biggest, most colorful, most exciting festival in
(01:24):
all of the Kingdom of Thailand. Yes, it's a kingdom.
There's a king here and it's celebrated all over the country,
but the epicenter will be November fifth at Sukotai, one
of the ancient capitals. We'll be there. It's about halfway
between Bangkok and cheng Mai, so we're going to enjoy Bangkok.
(01:46):
Now here is one of the real fun things. It
is actually one am Sunday morning here in Bangkok. We're
fourteen hours ahead of you. I believe you are eleven
am in Salt Lake City.
Speaker 2 (02:00):
Yes, uh huh.
Speaker 1 (02:01):
And there is a weekend market and the name of
it is Chadachuk Weekend Market. Are you ready for this?
There are fifteen thousand vendors. It's outdoors, oh to over
ten thousand stalls. Some of them are roving, fifteen thousand vendors.
(02:23):
And there's food, there's entertainment and shopping, shopping, shopping. It
is mind boggling. Now. I did tell the men on
the tour that if each one of them will give
me twenty bucks, there will be no shopping. I mean,
I promise you you're going to be dollars ahead. You
(02:43):
know what is it I love about Thailand's the people,
the culture, the food, first class medical care, everything about
and good value. Once you get here. We'll be talking
more about Thailand. Later in the show. I will be
announcing my jen You were late January early February twenty
(03:03):
twenty seven Thailand and Cambodia tour. Well, two weeks ago, John,
you and I were at the Fall Utah Travel Expo.
What was your take on that?
Speaker 2 (03:16):
It was great. We met with a lot of really
good people. It was well attended, great deals, and I
understand that's going to be a yearly tradition and so
I'm excited about that.
Speaker 1 (03:26):
Well, this is the first time that Morris Columbus Travel,
the sponsor of the Fall Utah Travel Expo, has done
when in the fall. Now you folks are well aware
that every January Morris Columbus Travel sponsors the Utah Travel Expo.
We have the Southern Utah Travel Expo in Saint George
(03:47):
and coming up that'll be Wednesday, January twenty first, always
on a Wednesday in Saint George, and then two days
later a Friday Saturday, which will be January twenty third
and twenty fourth in Salt Lake City area actually in
Sandy at the Mountain America expos Center now in Saint
(04:08):
George and at the Davis Conference Center in Leyton. There
were about fifty travel vendors. What do I mean by vendor?
Speaker 2 (04:16):
Airlines, hotels, tour operators, resorts, everything travel now, But in
Salt Lake there's over one hundred.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
Last year there was one hundred and seven.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
Why the difference, It's a bigger space. It's space, Yes.
Speaker 1 (04:32):
You know, fifty in Saint George and fifty up at
the Fall Travel Expo. That's all that. It's the biggest
ballroom they have. Yeah, but the deals are there now.
One of the nice thing is that many of the
the discounts, promotions, things like that are still available this
(04:55):
coming week, such as free air it's really a bogo.
What do I mean by bogo?
Speaker 2 (05:02):
One person goes free?
Speaker 1 (05:03):
Yeah, buy one, get one airfare free, Wi Fi free,
shore excursion credits free. What the third and fourth person
sale free? You just pay the taxes.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
Sometimes you get a free upgrade or on work credits.
Speaker 1 (05:17):
Right. And then discounts on land tours and land travel
discounts on Hawaii and Mexico. So it all promotions in
discounts are subject to availability and change at the time
of booking. Yes, if you want to give John a call,
eight oh one four eight three fifty two fourteen. That's
(05:40):
eight oh one four eight three fifty two fourteen. Or
talk to any of the Morris Columbus travel advisors, the
experts where you always travel more and pay less. You
can call directly if you have their number. Every travel
advisor has a direct.
Speaker 2 (05:56):
Number, yes, starting with four eight three eight oh one
for eight three.
Speaker 1 (06:02):
But if you don't have one, call eight hundred triple
nine forty six forty six, eight hundred triple nine forty
six forty six or their website, which.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
Is Morris Columbus dot com. One more time, Morris Columbus
dot com.
Speaker 1 (06:18):
All right, John, how long have you been in the
travel industry?
Speaker 2 (06:22):
Last month made my twenty eighth year.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
Well, you've seen travel come and go. Oh yes, what
are people calling about now? What are the most popular destinations?
Speaker 2 (06:33):
As far as destinations, of course, any Caribbean cruise is
quite popular, and Alaska cruises. But we've really seen an
uptick in Europe, especially Ireland, Scotland and Italy. And but
you know, it's always a good thing. There's always different places.
Of course, Mexico Hawaii are always big as well, but
(06:56):
Europe has really seen an increase do.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
You find more and more people kind of getting I mean,
you see the big cities like Rome, like Florence, like Vienna,
but it seems a lot of people want to kind
of they want to see that, but get away from
the maddening crowns in the more out of the way places.
Speaker 2 (07:15):
Yeah. For instance, I've had several that have wanted to
do both Ireland and Scotland. They're renting a car, They're
driving around. We've done hotels at different places around the
islands and they are just loving it.
Speaker 1 (07:28):
Are they taking the car on the ferry across now?
So they rent one in Ireland?
Speaker 2 (07:32):
In Ireland flying over? You know.
Speaker 1 (07:35):
One of my favorite kind of out of the way
places in Italy is Sanji Mignano. It is like a
it's pedestrian in the in the city square in that area,
but it's like it's a walled city. It's like stepping
back in time. And the food. Don't even get me started.
You know what I have found, John, The biggest difference
(07:59):
in Italian cuisine at most places in the United States
versus most places in Italy is that the pasta is
the centerpiece. Yes, and people well in Italy will ask
they ask a description, where was it made, what was
the flower that was going? What about? Where did the
(08:19):
water come from? And here in the US we tend
to sauce pasta heavily. We're in Italy it's more of
an accent. Yes, you know, they want to taste the pasta.
Here we will. It seems like we want to taste
the sauce sauce. What are some of the things you
like to see and do in Scotland?
Speaker 2 (08:38):
Oh, Scotland. Of course you've got to go to see
Nissi you know.
Speaker 1 (08:43):
Oh ups lock means lake.
Speaker 2 (08:47):
Yeah, yeah, and so you know. And of course that's
where golf was born, is over in Scotland.
Speaker 1 (08:54):
Do you know that the first written record of golf
at Saint Andrews, which is the grand everybody wants the
old course. Yes, there's the old course in the new course.
Speaker 2 (09:04):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (09:04):
And as far as it's the history, I mean it's
an okay course. I've been there several times. They call
me Larry longball gelwicks off the tee a good fifty
yards anyway. The first written record of golf at St
Andrew's dates back to fifteen fifty two.
Speaker 2 (09:25):
Wow.
Speaker 1 (09:26):
And of course the course has evolved over the centuries,
originally with twenty two holes, later developing the current eighteen holes.
They change it from twenty two to eighteen holes in
seventeen sixty four. What else do you like there?
Speaker 2 (09:41):
Oh, just the beauty the castles. There are over two
thousand castles across Scotland and so that's always, you know,
a lot of fun things to do. One thing that
really surprised me is their national animal. I've never seen before.
It's the unicorn. Really, it is the symbol of Scotland.
And of course bagpipes didn't originate in Scotland, but boy
(10:05):
have they adopted them.
Speaker 1 (10:06):
You know. One of the great joys for Kathy and
I visiting in the summer months is the heather up
in the Highlands. August is the peak season for heather
and it's just it's a wash in colorful blooms. Now,
one other thing that Kathy and I did this year
(10:27):
with a group of travel show listeners is the Tattoo Festival.
No that's not body art like you have all over
your arms and chest. It is bagpipe the largest world
bagpipe festival and drum Corps at the Castle at Edinburgh. Well,
that and more when we come back. I want to
tell you about my twenty twenty seven Thailand and Cambodia tour. Yes,
(10:53):
it's on the market here on the Travel Show. You're
listening to the Travel Show. I'm Larry Gelwicks, the Getaway Guru.
(11:16):
Thank you for joining us and our wonderful guests and
host here on the Travel Show every weekend at this
time on this very station. You know, we're syndicated on
nineteen stations. Now we originate with station k n RS
at the Crossroads of the West in Salt Lake City.
(11:37):
I'm pleased to welcome John Potter, one of our great
travel advisors with Morris Columbus Travel, the sponsor of the show. John,
you know I love Thailand, Yes, and in all of
Southeast Asia. And people ask why because I've said if
it weren't for the kids and grandkids, I would live
(11:59):
there would But the kids and grandkids trump everything else.
Of course, you know, my grandkids are bankrupting me and
I am a willing participant.
Speaker 2 (12:11):
I bet you are.
Speaker 1 (12:12):
Anything they want they get from Papa. In fact, you
know my daughter Sarah, oh yeah, and she said to me, Dad,
where was all this generosity when we were growing up?
You were so strict with us, I said, what's your point,
they're the grandkids.
Speaker 2 (12:28):
I've had several people say that if they would have
known how grandkids were, they would have started with them
instead of the children.
Speaker 1 (12:33):
My mother said that to us, I would have skipped
the four of you. Yeah. I love Southeast Asia. It's
the people. There's a graciousness that you can feel. It's
called the Land of Smiles. And there's a different vibe
even as you cross the border into Lao or Cambodi
or Vietnam. I love those areas, but there's a different
(12:56):
feeling that I don't know how to describe it. John,
There's a vibe there, There's a it's like something in
the air that you can feel, you can touch, you
can breathe. And don't even get me started on the food.
Oh my, you know. One of my favorite dishes is
very simple, fresh mango sticky rice with coconut cream on it.
(13:20):
And in the tropics the mango is always fresh. Then
there's the night markets of chang Mai, where it's just
it's beyond description. With that, you get up north to
chang Rai, the foothills of the Himalayas. Bangkok, of course,
has the Great Grand Palace.
Speaker 2 (13:43):
It's gold, isn't it.
Speaker 1 (13:45):
Well, that's one of that's the chapel in there.
Speaker 2 (13:47):
Okay, there's a temple in there, Golden Temple.
Speaker 1 (13:50):
Yeah. But the real the one you're talking about, is
what doys Sutepe up outside of chang Mai. It's the
Gold Temple. But at the Ground Palace there is a
lot of gold and the most sacred religious icon, the
Emerald Buddha, is there at a chapel in the Grand
(14:11):
So it's a monstrous area acreage right there, and then
down to Puquet everything. Did you ever see the Leonardo
DiCaprio movie Beach the Beaches. Yes, that was filmed down
in the islands of Thailand, and you know there's that
(14:31):
one scene where it shoots to the beach and in
the theater you hear.
Speaker 2 (14:36):
People gasp, Oh, it's beautiful.
Speaker 1 (14:38):
It really is. Of course, I enjoy strutting along the
beach and then I'm asked to put my shirt back on.
Thank you very much. You know you asked about. The
Gold Temple is up outside of Chieng Mai in a
national park high atop a hill, and it's a sacred
temple with a history about the discovery of a bone
(15:02):
fragment believe believed to be from Buddha. There is a
monk named Sumanatara that discovered the bone fragment reportedly of
buddha shoulder, and he took it to the Lana King
who had it. He broke and half half went to
(15:23):
a temple. The other half went to the Lana king
it's the Atlantic kingdom l A n n A, and
placed it on the back of a white elephant. Now,
elephants are sacred in Thailand. They're revered, and a white
elephant is like from the gods, from the heavens, and
(15:43):
they knew they had to build a temple. So they
tied this bone on the back of the white sacred
elephant and out in the jungle for three days they
followed it and the elephant would climb on mountains, come
down in the valley. Finally went to the very top
of one of the mountains. Deusutep is the name of
(16:06):
the mountain, and there he trumpeted three times and fell
over dead. This was taken by Nanone, who is the
Alana King, as a sign from the heavens. This is
where the temple should be built. Now, the Thai word
for temple is Wat wat so for example, the LDS
(16:28):
temple in Salt Lake would be called Wat Salt Lake.
This is what doussu tep and that's how the name came.
And it is a gold temple. Say oh, there's some gold. No,
you're not hearing me. It's gold. And what's really nice
about it is it's been an active temple. Construction started
(16:50):
in the year thirteen eighty six, wow, and it's been
an active temple ever since. High atop of mountain, they
have a funicular that you take up to the mountain
and the priest will give you a blessing, dips a
lily pod into some like holy water and just kind
(17:11):
of shakes it out there. I tell people it's right
from the river, so close your eyes and close your
mouth when it's just a light sprinkle. Well, the good
news is every year I do a Thailand and Legends
of Siam, including a option to anchor what Cambodio one
of the Great Seven Wonders of the World from the
(17:32):
twelfth to the fourteenth century, the most enlightened educated population
on Earth. Over eight hundred Kimmer temples are in the
area eight hundred. Only two hundred have been restored or
dug the Junglewoi, but anchor what never had to be
(17:52):
because it's been an active temple since the twelfth century. Wow,
and you'll see, you'll see that's almost as old as Carlos.
Speaker 2 (17:59):
Yes, So here.
Speaker 1 (18:01):
Are the dates. We'll leave the United States January twenty fourth,
the day after the Utah Travel Expo. And if you
just want to do Thailand, you'll be home February seventh.
If you want to do Cambodia with me, it'll be
February tenth.
Speaker 2 (18:16):
Now, now that's twenty twenty seventh, that's.
Speaker 1 (18:18):
Twenty twenty seven. This tour is about two thirds already
sold out. We just put it on the market a
week ago. Two thirds gone. I keep it to thirty
six people and most meals. It's a deep dive into culture,
into cuisine and food. Love to have you join me.
(18:38):
Take a look at the website Morris Columbus dot com.
(19:03):
Soaldy Cop and welcome to the travel show. Saldy Cop
is the native greeting here in Thailand, the Kingdom of
Thailand's actually Sunday morning, and it's about oh gosh, one
thirty one thirty five in the morning. John Potter with
Morris Columbus Travel is back in studio in Salt Lake
(19:25):
City and through the miracle of technology, John can be
to you know, broadcasting today November the first from Salt
Lake City and I can be around the world.
Speaker 2 (19:38):
Now I've got a question for you, Larry. Yes, you've
been in Bangkok one night?
Speaker 1 (19:42):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (19:42):
Are you now humble?
Speaker 1 (19:44):
You have no idea and I can't tell the stories
behind that. This is the family show. Oh okay, we
remember that song?
Speaker 2 (19:52):
Yes, we do that.
Speaker 1 (19:54):
You know what would be appropriate to go along with
it is one Dog Night?
Speaker 2 (19:59):
Yes, remember I remember? Yes?
Speaker 1 (20:01):
Yeah, Hey listen John. There are scammers everywhere, oh yes,
in every facet of life, but we're seeing more and
more travel scams. You have won a free cruise, you
have won a free airline ticket, just just click on
(20:22):
this link. All they want is to pirate your website,
your bank account, your address book. Yes, and or you've
won a free cruise and you have to pay a
fifty dollars reservation feed there. I mean these things are
right and left red flags going up. They are now
(20:43):
one of the most frequent scams out there are with
airline and cruise line telephone numbers. How does that work? John?
Speaker 2 (20:55):
People will go to Google tayp in, for instance, Delta
Airlines okay, and it'll pop up, they'll click on it,
it'll give them a phone number. They call and they
think they're calling Delta, but they're really not calling Delta,
and they're gonna say, oh, there's a problem with your reservation.
We need to fix it. We just need your personal information.
That's the red flag. Do not do it. So whenever
(21:17):
you Google to get a phone number, put in official site.
Speaker 1 (21:22):
Exactly like Delta dot com. But you can also see
Delta dot com slash reservations. That may be a scammer
right there. And so what it is is, for example,
you'll call up and say, hey, I need to make
a change, and they'll say, okay, that'll be one hundred
(21:43):
and twenty dollars. I need your credit card. Or listen,
taxes have gone up sixteen dollars. You need to prepay them.
Now I need your credit card. This happens all the time.
You think, well, Google, you'll see their logo, you'll see
their name, everything. It looks legit. More than likely it's not.
(22:04):
As John said, put Delta Airlines official site and look
carefully at the email address that it's coming from. And
the other thing is if you call them, they're going
to ask you information. That's a red flag. Now if
(22:27):
it's official, they'll ask you your name, your flight number,
and what you you know. Here's what I would do. Okay,
And let's say I dialed a scammer John and I said, okay,
it's Larry Gelwick's I'm flying to Los Angeles on November
fifteenth on flight six forty two. That is all the
(22:51):
information they need and there's nothing personal you've given it.
They say, well, you know, what's your credit card? Or
they just say, hey, ask them for the It's called
a record locator. Could you give me my record locator please?
That's a six digit alpha numeric reservation code. They will
(23:12):
have it. And if they won't give it to you
after you've given your name and flight number and travel date,
more than likely it's a scam.
Speaker 2 (23:21):
Yes, and I've had a few people mentioned this. There
is no airline, there is no cruise line that is
going to ask you for your social Security number. Never
give that out.
Speaker 1 (23:34):
Another scam out there. When Uber was launched, have you
done Uber?
Speaker 2 (23:38):
Oh? Yes, all the time.
Speaker 1 (23:39):
Yeah, I find that I find it's a good service.
I know what my costs are. Originally, with Uber, customers
were not supposed to tip their drivers. The drivers, as
the app promise, were paid well enough that the fair
included the tips. So yes, they're getting tipped, but we've
already added that in and the experience seemed seen. Let's
(24:00):
just get out of the vehicle. Drivers I get this,
wanted to earn more, and so Uber agreed to support
tipping in its app. There's still a tip included, but
if you had a good experience, you could add to it.
But because customers started paying more to drivers through tips,
Uber reduced how much they paid to the drivers. That's
(24:24):
just bogush anyway. So here's an Uber tipping scam you
need to watch out for. Tipping is still voluntary in
the app. Can I say that again? Voluntary in the
app and there's no automatic tip added to your ride cost,
but some try. Some drivers reportedly are warning riders that
(24:48):
they will receive an automatic thirty percent tip if they
choose not to enter their own tip amount. Well, that
motivates the riders to do something with the tip. Now,
the biggest reason drivers don't get tipped isn't that the
rider prefers a zero tip, It's that they don't return
(25:09):
to the app to do it. You have to come
back to it. So drivers who get passengers into the
app to select a tip could be getting more than
the zero that's right there. More likely, though, they're getting
a rider to leave an amount they'd have left if
only they had returned to the app. So they set
a base expectation of thirty percent, and people seem to
(25:32):
want to go belot. Well, I'll give them ten, fifteen,
maybe twenty, But I don't want this thirty percent automatic tip.
There are so many scammers out there. Just beware. Yes,
and John, you've just won a free five nights stay
in Orlando. Oh craz give me fifty bucks resermes.
Speaker 2 (25:51):
Okay, here's my credit card number.
Speaker 1 (25:53):
Thank you. Hey. I absolutely tell our listeners that cruising
is the best travel value. What I like is I
pack an unpack one time, I have exciting ports to call,
all my meals and entertainment included in one very affordable price.
And if you do in a river cruise, your shore
excursions are included on most river cruise companies. Soft drinks,
(26:18):
including diet Coke, the official drink of the State of Utah.
Soft drinks, beer and wine are included with lunch and
dinner and usually at a happy hour. Two. Yes, So
what are the current best cruise promotions out there?
Speaker 2 (26:32):
Okay, well, Norwegian Cruise Lines has their More at Sea package.
Speaker 1 (26:38):
That but that's not free.
Speaker 2 (26:39):
That's not free. Part of it is you get free internet,
you get free at well a fifty dollars discount on
short excursions if you do the airfare with cruise one
person does fly free, and then you can add your
free drinks or free dining experience. They're going to charge
you the gratuities for those, but they are free.
Speaker 1 (27:02):
You know, Princess doesn't charge automatic gratuities for the beverage package. Now, folks,
I said, the More at C does have a cost
to it. So think of this two price points for
your cruise. And I'm just going to make up some numbers.
Cruise only taxes and fees one thousand bucks, the more
(27:22):
at C with free Wi Fi, free specialty dining, free
shore excursion credits, the free airfare I'll call one thousand
plus x because that amount varies. Yes, And so what
I do when I sail with NCL is I look
at the crews only, and I look at the more
(27:44):
at C price, which is higher. But I'm getting my
gratuities paid for a drink package, free internet, all these
things that have to have anyway, free airfare, and I
just make a decision which is the best for me.
What's Princess got going Princess has. They call it the
Epic Cruise Sale. It's for longer cruises. They say, the
(28:06):
longer the cruise, the bigger the savings. It's for cruises
fourteen days or longer select cruises.
Speaker 2 (28:13):
I looked. It does not cover the Hawaii sixteen day
and it does not count if it's a back to
back cruise. But the longer cruisers you're going to save
up to eighteen hundred dollars, and that's a good saving
for those cruises. I've got some clients that spook to
sixty day cruise with Princess and they got a really
good savings on that. Royal Caribbean has sixty percent off
(28:36):
the second guest. Kids sail free on select cruises, and
by kids they mean twelve and under what they consider
kids and Viking cruises either river or ocean on select
sailings and select markets, free international airfare.
Speaker 1 (29:01):
That's a good deal. By the way, Regent seven Seas,
which is a ultra deluxe cruise line, they have a
promotion going on select cruises free first class airfil Oh
that's class or business class any where you're going.
Speaker 2 (29:17):
Yes, I had forgotten about that when I'm glad you
mentioned that that is a good deal.
Speaker 1 (29:20):
And Regent is off the charts. It is the ultra.
Speaker 2 (29:24):
Deluxe, Yes they are. They're wonderful.
Speaker 1 (29:26):
Hey, what is it about Polynesia, the South Pacific, the
South Seas that absolutely fascinates us.
Speaker 2 (29:38):
I think it's the beauty and the spirit. You go
there and it the whole atmosphere feels different. It's just
like a loving atmosphere. You feel like you're being hugged
and it's just beautiful. And the people are amazing, the
most wonderful people.
Speaker 1 (29:57):
There's a romantic fascint nation, warm tropical weather, the sunrises
and sunsets are unparalleled, very friendly Native people who love
to sing and dance, play with fire, Scenery that absolutely
explodes the senses, unspoiled, uncrowded beaches. It's a world set
(30:19):
apart where I think time stands still. You know, Bora, Bora,
in the Society Islands, part of French Polynesia. James Mischier,
the famous author, said, was the single most beautiful mountain
in the world. It's dominated by Mount Otomanu, and it's
an island surrounded by It's in a lagoon. And what
(30:43):
Kathy and I love to do is get jet skis
and we'll get like a little picnic lunch and we
will jet ski not out in the open ocean, in
the lagoon, which is calm water, and stop at Amotu,
an island uninhabited, think of Gilligan's Island of the Garden
of Eden, and have a picnic lunch with absolutely and
(31:07):
then the Figley. But anyway, Kathy and I will be
hosting a South Pacific Odyssey in May of next year
May fifteen to twenty seven. Where will we will visit Tahiti, Moorea, Rightetea, Bora, Bora,
the Society Islands, French Polynesia, cruise the Tuamotu Archipelago, cross
(31:32):
the Equator and then visit the islands of Hawaii and
John that has the free airfare offer. It does Hey,
when we come back, Pluto is going to put on
his Pluto hat and give us a disney update. Thank
(32:03):
you for joining us here on the Travel show. You
really are the star of the show. You know, if
we don't have you, we don't have a travel show.
I'm Larry Gelwicks, the getaway Guru. The Travel Show is
sponsored by Morris Columbus Travel, where you always travel more
and pay less. Talk to any of the expert travel
(32:23):
advisors at Morris Columbus Travel. Now I've got one of
them here with me today, John Potter, who's in the
Bountiful office, but you can call from anywhere because it's
on the telephone. You want to talk to John direct
eight oh one four eight three fifty two fourteen. That's
eight oh one four eight three fifty two fourteen. Or
(32:44):
if you don't have a favorite travel advisor, call eight
hundred triple nine forty six forty six. Now John when
and I want to welcome John Potter to the show? John,
When did you develop this over the top, crazy, unreasonable
(33:06):
but so much fun. Love for Disneyland? You and Jenny
my daughter her cut out of the same mold. Yeah,
she's completely lost her mind.
Speaker 2 (33:15):
For me, it was nineteen ninety four.
Speaker 1 (33:17):
How old were you?
Speaker 2 (33:18):
I was in my late twenties.
Speaker 1 (33:20):
I brought. Was it your first visit to Disney It was.
Speaker 2 (33:23):
My second, my first as an adult. I went there
with my grandparents when I was in the second grade,
and I had some friends that were Disney fanatics, and
they sucked me into their evil world, and there I became.
And I went with them and bought a three day pass,
and before I left, I transfer that to an annual pass.
Speaker 1 (33:40):
And you've been there ever since? Yeah, you know, I
think Disney opened in California in nineteen fifty five. Yes,
And my first visit I grew up, as I've said
in San Francisco, was in nineteen fifty eight. I was
eight years old and that was our first visit to Disneyland,
and there was only one at that time. I have
pictures of me at eight years old and then again
(34:04):
at about twelve years old. We drove down stayed at
the Disneyland hotel right there, and it was so exciting.
I'll be going to Disneyland in December. Well, we'll see
you there. We'll have a turo together. Yeah, and with
Jenny and my two grandsons, her sons. Her husband can't go,
(34:28):
so I'm going to go and have a lot of
fun with him, what's going on with Disney right now?
Speaker 2 (34:34):
Well, July fourth next year is the two hundred and
fiftieth anniversary of our country, right well, Disney is going
to celebrate all year long. It's going to start here
in just a couple of weeks on Veterans Day, which
if I remembering right, is November eleventh, and it's called
Disney Celebrating America. And it's going to continue every day
(34:54):
through July fourth of twenty twenty six, the weekend that.
Speaker 1 (34:57):
We can starting this November.
Speaker 2 (34:59):
Starting this No just a couple of weeks from this,
it's like.
Speaker 1 (35:02):
An eight month celebration.
Speaker 2 (35:03):
That's fair past it is. Disney loves America, and they're
going to have all their brands are going to be
honoring America's past, present and inspire the future. And they
will shine the spotlight on the people, places of monuments
that have made our nation special. They're going to have
special fireworks shows and the Soar and Ride. When that
(35:25):
first open up was soaring over California and now it's
soaring around the world. Next year, it's going to be
soaring over America and so it'll be all American sites
that you're going.
Speaker 1 (35:35):
To fly over that's exciting.
Speaker 2 (35:36):
Yeah, so it's going to be a lot of fun.
Speaker 1 (35:38):
I hope they show something from Utah like Canyon Lane.
Speaker 2 (35:41):
I bet they do. I bet they fly over Zions
or something. Yeah. So, Disney Cruise Line, their number seven
ship is in Florida preparing for its inaugural sailing on
November the twentieth, So they now have seven ships sailing
and Uber eight is coming out on March the tenth.
Speaker 1 (36:03):
I got to put you on the spot here, John,
I know you love all things Disney and Disney cruises.
There's nothing like it, No, nothing like it. But it
is decidedly more expensive than just going on X, Y
or Z to the Caribbean. Two questions, I already know
the answer to the first one. Is it really worth it?
Speaker 2 (36:25):
Oh yes, yeah.
Speaker 1 (36:27):
That's like asking me if if I should go to
Thailand or asking insurance salesman do I have enough insurance? Yeah?
Speaker 2 (36:33):
Huh exactly.
Speaker 1 (36:34):
Why why pay that extra money?
Speaker 2 (36:38):
It's in the value. You remember the old adage you
get what you pay for. And with Disney, their shows
are by far the best of any cruise line I've
been on. They're the Disney shows are family friendly, they
have fireworks, they've got amazing casts, they've got amazing sets.
Speaker 1 (36:53):
You got Disney characters, yes, and I understand. The food
is really good on board.
Speaker 2 (36:59):
Food is really good. They have things for children, they
have things for adults.
Speaker 1 (37:03):
And soft drinks are included.
Speaker 2 (37:05):
Soft drinks you don't have to buy the soda package.
They have pictures that you can just walk up to
and all of a sudden they come to life.
Speaker 1 (37:12):
You know, I think of Disneyland or the Magic Kingdom
or any of the parks. They're pricey, but you can't
replicate it anywhere else.
Speaker 2 (37:21):
No, you can't. And on these cruise ships, the kids
programs who can entertain children better than Disney.
Speaker 1 (37:28):
So you got going.
Speaker 2 (37:29):
So the Disney Destiny is the name of that ship,
and again it's coming out.
Speaker 1 (37:35):
I'm sure you'll be booking yourself on it.
Speaker 2 (37:37):
I will be sailing on it in January, thank you
very much. The Disney Adventure is going to be sailing
in Singapore. It's been delayed at Singapore. It's not going
to have any ports of call. It's experienced the ship.
Speaker 1 (37:52):
I think for kids that would be fantastic. It's nice
to go to Portugal. But what do the kids want?
They want the water park and the and the kids
club and Disney characters. And when you're in port all day,
you don't.
Speaker 2 (38:05):
Get that, Yeah, you really don't. And so there went
in March. There'll be eight ships sailing and they have
four more on order, so they're getting big.
Speaker 1 (38:15):
Hey, by the way, you lived up to my expectation
of the expo. You wore your Pluto hat. I did.
Speaker 2 (38:22):
It made my head itch, but I wore it.
Speaker 1 (38:23):
Thank you very much. Hey, when we come back at
our number two more of the Travel Show, Saladi Cup
(38:54):
and greetings from Bangkok, Thailand. It's about two in the
morning Sunday, and and I think it's about twelve noon
back in the Salt Lake City Inner Mountain area. I'm
Larry Gelwicks, the Getaway Guru, and I've gotten away to
the Kingdom of Thailand with a group of travel show
listeners for a Thailand and Vietnam. Now, this is a
(39:17):
great first time we've ever done this. If it goes
as well as I think it will go, then yeah,
we will do it again, probably in twenty twenty seven.
But we arrived on Halloween and today, well yesterday for me,
November the first we had a full day city tour,
(39:39):
and the apex of it is the Grand Palace. I
should mention John Potter, excellent travel advisors. Here greetings John.
John's back in Salt Lake City in studio for the
show John. There are some places around the world then
if you went there that whole distance and only saw
(40:02):
that one thing, it would be worth the trip. The
taj Mahal, the Serengetti a sunrise and sunset in Tahiti.
The Grand Palace in Bangkok, Thailand. I don't even know
how to describe it. It overloads the census. So on
(40:26):
our city tour, we go to the flower market and
the city, the back alleys, the Grand Palace, then down
to Watpo, the famous Gold Gold gold reclining Buddha. We
have a lunch at one of my favorite restaurants, and
then we do the clongs. You know, they are over
(40:47):
eleven hundred canals in Bangkok. It's called the Venice of
the East, and you go by boat. And so we
get in a boat and visit the klongs or canals,
and we get out of the city's canals and we're
(41:07):
exploring places where few tourists ever go. We have shopping
opportunities it's just an incredible, incredible experience. Now you know
what's really fun is they have several forms of taxis. Here.
You have your traditional taxi. It's like a yellow cab,
but it's not yellow. Well it might be it might
(41:28):
be green, it might be white, it might be red.
But it has a little taxi sign on the top.
And always ask them run the meter if they see
a foreigner. They just want to give you an inflated rate.
There's another travel scam, and that one's all over the world. Yes,
with taxis, there's a traditional taxi. There's what's called a tuktuk,
which is a three wheeled vehicle, no meter. You negotiate
(41:51):
the price. See me, I'll tell you what the fair
rate is for where you want to go. Then they
have a water taxi. Now in Salt Lake City, we
have these Uta buses. They have the equivalent I'll call
it the Uta version of Bangkok boats. It's like it
holds one hundred people or more and it makes regular stops,
(42:12):
regular runs. And then they have the death Wish taxi,
which is on the back of a motorcycle. The driver
has a vest on, he's got a helmet. You don't
get a helmet and he's zipping through traffic. I love Thailand.
Today is Sunday, November, tewod here at about two am
and we're going to the weekend mark at Chattashook and
(42:34):
fifteen thousand vendors, ten thousand stalls. Everything you want, you
could possibly want, we've got. You know, it's so much
fun to travel with a Morris Columbus group. There's a
couple that I want to highlight that I'll have the
pleasure of hosting. One is November next year, The Riches
(42:57):
of the Maykong. This is a deluxe'ma Waterways river cruise
through Cambodia and Vietnam when I will see the major
cities of Saigon, Si Andre, PanAm Pin. But then we
get to the backwaters villages that seem to be untouched
by time, where they walk or they're in horse drawn
(43:21):
or ox drawn carts, they're plowing with a plow pulled
by a water buffalo or something. It's just amazing. We'll
have pre cruise options to Anchor Watt and Bangkok. What
we did, John, is we bought half the boat and
we have cabins if that are anywhere from say five
(43:44):
hundred dollars to over a thousand dollars discount per person.
It's like two thousand dollars a couple on the higher
end discount. Why because we took inventories. We bought the cabins,
and if you were to call Alma and book a
cabin direct with them, you will pay anywhere from five
(44:05):
hundred to over one thousand dollars more than dealing with us.
This is absolutely one of my favorite turs. I've been
to one hundred and seventeen countries, most of them many
times over. However, the riches of the Maykng with Alma Waterways,
it's right there at the top. I can't wait to go,
and I'd love to have you go with me. We'll
(44:27):
have local guys. All your short excursions are included. Take
advantage of the discount. The cruise dates are November ninth
to the sixteenth of twenty twenty six. Now you have
an exciting cruise that you'll be the Doctari guide well
on the Send River in August of twenty twenty six.
What are you doing.
Speaker 2 (44:47):
Yes, we're going to fly into Paris and spend two
days in Paris.
Speaker 1 (44:51):
And we have non stop service out of Sway.
Speaker 2 (44:53):
Stop service with Delta and the hotels being done by
Almah Waterway, so it's going to be a first class
hotel and a g location. We're gonna have two days
sight seeing, then we're going to get on the crews
and we are going to sail several ports. But where
I like the best is Normandy. We're going to visit
(45:13):
the Normandy US Cemetery where nine and eighty eight soldiers
are interned.
Speaker 1 (45:21):
Ask your guide to get you there at four pm.
Now you'll be seeing other things. You go to Omaha Beach.
There were five beaches that the Allied forces attacked or landed.
The US had Omaha and Utah Beach, the Brits had too,
the Canadians have one. Omaha Beach is probably where you'll
(45:42):
be going. Thirty four thousand troops and it was the
bloodiest of all of them and just standing there knowing
what went on. Mostly young men.
Speaker 2 (45:51):
Sacrificed willingly, giving their lives in a war that wasn't ours, yes.
Speaker 1 (45:56):
But to preserve freedom. But anyway, you want to go
at four because at four pm everything stops at the
American Cemetery and they play taps and lower the American flag.
And it is emotional.
Speaker 2 (46:10):
Bet it is as far as.
Speaker 1 (46:11):
The eye can see. You see white crosses. Yes, they
have a beautiful visitor center there too.
Speaker 2 (46:16):
Yes, a nice little museum in there.
Speaker 1 (46:17):
Aren't you going to row In which is Joan of.
Speaker 2 (46:21):
Arc, Yes, Rowanney. We're going to go visit Monai's garden
in Goaverni Roane. Uh. We get two days in Lahov.
One day we'll be going down to Normandy and then
in Lahov. That's a fun city to go viking. And
the city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Speaker 1 (46:40):
I was there in July in Lahav beautiful center. Out
to Normandy too, I just can't.
Speaker 2 (46:47):
Yeah. And in Rowant Rowant is it Rowan Roanne. They
have the beautiful cobblestone streets and the Rowan Cathedral and
they have paintings inside that monete.
Speaker 1 (46:58):
And don't even get me started on the French cuisine,
especially the pastries and the French bread hot and fresh
from the oven.
Speaker 2 (47:06):
We might even have a croissant tour too, thank you chocolate.
I like the chocolate. And then of course Pluto is
escorting this tour, so at the end we're going to
have an optional tour to Disneyland Paris.
Speaker 1 (47:19):
Give me the dates again, and how we find this
one because it's not on the Morris Columbus group site.
Speaker 2 (47:24):
Yes, it's The dates are August twenty sixth through September fifth.
If you do cruise only on the Morris Morris Columbus site.
Speaker 1 (47:38):
That's Morris Columbus dot com.
Speaker 2 (47:40):
You go at the top it says other tours. Click
there and it says Columbus hosted tours and it's listed
right there. Or just call me and I'll be happy
to send you the link or the brochure.
Speaker 1 (47:54):
You know, I think the best bet, John is just
to call you direct.
Speaker 2 (47:57):
Yes.
Speaker 1 (47:58):
Eight oh one, eight three fifty two fourteen, eight oh
one fourty three fifty two fourteen. Now, when we get
into the next segment, John is in twenty twenty six,
I will be doing exactly the same itinerary round trip
from Paris on the Sinne in June of twenty twenty seven.
(48:22):
We'll have a pre cruise Paris option. My daughter Jenny
will want to go to Disneyland Paris well, and she's
been there. I've been there. I have to you know,
I still like California the most. I do too, you know,
maybe it's nostalgia. But what we did on the June
(48:43):
twenty twenty seven is we bought half the ship. I
seem to do that. You do that, I do that.
I you know I I if I understood the gambling
games in Las Vegas, I'd be dangerous.
Speaker 2 (48:56):
You know.
Speaker 1 (48:56):
I don't play because I don't understand. I know how
either by blackjack, you're supposed to get twenty one, but
I don't know what doubled down or any of that means.
The only one that I can really understand is a
slot machine. Put your money is pull the lever and
lose your coin. Yes, that's about what I understand. Anyway.
When we come back, I want to tell you about
some discounts for twenty twenty seven. You want to go
(49:18):
next year, go with John. It'll be a great experience.
You want to go with me, It'll be June of
twenty twenty seven. More on the Travel.
Speaker 3 (49:27):
Show, Hey, welcome back to the Travel Show.
Speaker 1 (49:54):
I'm Larry Glwick's the getaway Guru. The Travel show is
sponsored by more Columbus Travel. We always travel more and
pay less with great discounts, promotions and a friendly smile
from each of the Morris Columbus travel advisors, including John Potter,
who's here today. I'm in Thailand today. It's now what
(50:19):
is it, my gosh, about quarter after twenty after two
in the morning, and that would be about what twelve twenty, yeah,
twenty back in Salt like say, through the miracle technology.
John is in studio today with the Travel show, and
you know, if the signal goes down, he'll have to
(50:40):
take over. I'm kind of wondering if you're just going
to hit the.
Speaker 2 (50:43):
Delight, but my fingers hovering over the button as we speak, so.
Speaker 1 (50:46):
Don't give me the finger, all right, Moving right along,
we were talking about this exciting sen River sailing round
trip north from Paris and coming back and Vernon and
Han Fleur, Rowan Joan of Arc Country, Lechave, Normandy, the
(51:09):
d Day Beaches, all of that, and yours is in
August of August twenty six. Is is that embarkation or
fly out of the US.
Speaker 2 (51:17):
That's fly out of the US.
Speaker 1 (51:18):
So embarkation is the twenty seventh of August, and that's
next year, twenty twenty six. I'm going to be taking
exactly the same tour in twenty twenty seven June. The
let's see, mine is June seventeen to the twenty fourth.
We'll have a pre cruise option to Paris, and of
(51:39):
course you can go early, stay late, explore Europe on
your own and go to where Disneyland. Thank you very much. Now,
I did something kind of crazy. That's not unusual.
Speaker 2 (51:53):
That's going to say that's a daily Yeah.
Speaker 1 (51:55):
That doesn't. That doesn't tie it down. What I did
is I bought half the ship. It's with Alma Waterways,
the Ultra Deluxe River Cruise Company, and it's like anything.
You want to buy one pencil, you pay one price.
You want to buy a truckload of pencils, you pay
(52:16):
a different price per pencil. And that's what we've done.
Let me give you these are the twenty twenty seven rates. Now,
the lead category is called an E is an echo.
It has fixed upper windows and you know they're not
really windows to see this is true, a very cruise line,
but they let in all sorts of natural light, but
(52:37):
they're not like a pitcher window.
Speaker 2 (52:39):
That you can look out of you can see the
sky and clouds.
Speaker 1 (52:42):
Yeah, thank you very much. The per person rate and
these are exclusive of about two hundred and fifty dollars
of government taxes. The published rate you want to call
AMA Direct is five, five hundred and seventy nine. I
will say that the France river cruises are a bit
(53:03):
higher than say the Rhine or the Danube. It's France. Yes,
they've never met anything they didn't like to tax into oblivion. Anyway,
here is the rate when you book with Morris Columbus Travel,
and you can book this one with John, you can
book his with John. You can book this one with John,
(53:23):
the Group department or any of our advisors. Yes, so
you'd pay if you call AMA Direct five thousand, five
hundred and seventy nine, your book with us three thousand,
six hundred and ninety nine John. That is a per
person savings of one thousand, eight hundred and eighty dollars.
(53:45):
Now double that and you've got a savings of three thousand,
seven hundred and sixty dollars. That's like thirty eight hundred
bucks for the same date, the same cruise, the same everything.
And I'll be your personal host, tour guide in addition
to local tour guides and on board experts. All your
(54:06):
meals and entertainment included, all your shore excursions are included
one of the nice things I like about on the waterways,
it'll be true on your cruise and mine is. For
most ports. They offer about four or five shore excursions
and they rate them as to the activity. Now, my
(54:26):
aunt some years ago, who was in her late eighties
and used a walker, and she's still with us, she's
ninety four. She couldn't take the more walking tours. They
had a tour perfect for her, and they keep Usually
the groups are about eight to ten or twelve. Sometimes
(54:49):
I've never seen them go over eighteen or twenty, but
they're usually about a dozen or something. And they each
have a professional license guide. So don't be afraid of
the mobile ability issue. You can choose it. Now. They
have the very active. You want to go on a
bicycle tour, thank you, I don't, but they have bicycles
(55:09):
you can take out on your own, which I do.
And then at every activity level they tell you what
is available. I'll give you another example. A category A
is an Apple has a French balcony. It's a large cabin.
The published rate is eight thousand, four hundred and seventy
(55:31):
eight dollars. Now, this is one of the Ultra Deluxe cabins,
I'll call it eighty five hundred bucks. With Morris Columbus
it's five thousand, four hundred and fifty nine. John. That
is a savings per person of three thousand and nineteen dollars.
Call it per couple six grand, six grand less than
(55:54):
if you book the same cruise, same date with any
other travel agency or directly with AMAH. So the dates again,
if you want to go with John is now his
and his rates are different because they're twenty twenty six,
and John can review those rates with you. Will be
August twenty seventh, boarding the ship to September fifth, of course,
(56:17):
with the pre cruise option to press and why not
take that? It's probably the same ship, probably is, and
I will be going June seventeen to twenty four, Kathy,
and I'll be hosting you on that. We'll have a
pre cruise option, and then I'm sure we'll be going
(56:37):
to Disneyland or.
Speaker 2 (56:39):
Something Jenny has anything to do with that.
Speaker 1 (56:41):
We will will be there. So I'll give Morris Columbus
Travel a call eight hundred triple nine forty six forty six,
eight hundred triple nine forty six forty six if you
already have the direct line of any of our advisors
sets as John eight O one for eight three fifteen
to fourteen. Call that advisor call him or her. Love
(57:05):
to have you on either one of these. It is
and the d Day Beaches I was there in July
are just it is an emotional experience. Hey, when we
come back, now is the time to book the Holy
Land and I'll tell you why. Welcome back to the
(57:43):
Travel Show. I'm Larry Gelwiz, the get Away Guru. Thank
you for joining us. It is so much fun to
spend the weekend with you. And as I'd mentioned, it's
what just past two thirty am Sunday morning, November the second,
here in Bangkok, Thailand, I can look out see the
(58:04):
light shimmering on the Chao Praya River. Here with a
wonderful group of Travel Show listeners, we're gonna explore Thailand
and Vietnam, including the colorful Loy Kratong Festival, which it's
kind of interesting. And we got John Potter. He's in
Salt Lake today and through the miracle of technology, it
(58:27):
sounds like we're both in Salt Lake or both in Thailand.
Speaker 2 (58:30):
I wish we were both.
Speaker 1 (58:31):
I wish you were here too. Lloyd Kretong is the biggest,
most colorful festival in Thailand and it's celebrated all over
the country. This year it will be November the fifth
up in Sukotai, about halfway between Bangkok and chang Mai,
and Lloyd Kretong is a combination of New Year's Easter, Ramadan,
(58:58):
the Day of a tone Yam Kipoor, Pioneer Day, July fourth, Thanksgiving,
Christmas Day. It's a bit of everything because what it
celebrates is on this day of renewal, of regeneration, regenerative living,
(59:19):
you take all of your sins, your mistakes, your bad luck,
your bad karma, sadness, hurt feelings, vengeful feelings, hateful feelings,
and a katong is a large banana leaf and you'll
(59:41):
put a candle in it and some offerings to Buddha,
some food offerings, and then you push the katong out
on a body of water. And what it does is
symbolically you're releasing all your bad karma, all your vibe,
your mistakes, your sins, your your hateful feelings, and you
(01:00:07):
release it and start anew. Well, if that's the case,
I have said, as I told our group here that
I don't need a banana leaf.
Speaker 2 (01:00:17):
I need a freighter and it will be a flaming.
Speaker 1 (01:00:26):
Gosh. Hey, we both, John and I love to cruz.
You love toa cruise. You know you pack and unpack
one time. It is all your meals. Entertainment included is
absolutely the best travel value out there. It is prices
are ridiculously good for what you're got. And you know
what I say, John, And this would be true of
(01:00:47):
a river cruisib be true of Disney cruises. Don't shop price,
but don't start there, stop there always, and it's important
to shop price you don't want to go back. I
think even more important is to shop value. What am
I getting for my price?
Speaker 2 (01:01:10):
Exactly?
Speaker 1 (01:01:11):
What's included, what's not included? And that's why a river cruise, Yeah,
the purchase price is usually bigger than most ocean cruises.
But then you start adding in usually soft drinks, beer
and wine at lunch and dinner and happy hour, your
shore excursions all included, free Wi Fi. Yes, you don't
(01:01:32):
have to buy it. Yes, so you want value now,
don't do this on a cruise, John, slap you up
side the head, But I won't because you'll slap me
back is There was a recent guest that stepped off
of a Caribbean cruise. They were shocked to find a
(01:01:56):
thirteen hundred dollars charge on the shipboard account. What could
this be? It was for at C cellular phone. He
had bought the Wi Fi package but thought it included
the cellular phone.
Speaker 2 (01:02:15):
No no, no, no no no no.
Speaker 1 (01:02:17):
So what but you want to make calls? Now you
can buy, like from most major cellular carriers, a package
where when you're on land, not at sea. It used
to be ten bucks, it's now twelve bucks a day,
and you have twenty four hours of unlimited USA Area
(01:02:37):
code calls. You know they like I call Kathy. We're
gonna uh, we'll be you know, all over the world together. Yeah,
she's not in the US, but it's a USA area
code and you have texting and some data that's added
to it. So, but that doesn't apply at sea. If
you want to make some calls, what are you going
(01:03:01):
to do?
Speaker 2 (01:03:03):
You want to go to What's app? You can do
that app app? It's a What's that Dog? It's a
great app you can use to communicate with people. You
can call, you can text. It is a wonderful app.
I've used it quite a bit out of the country,
and it's different than Wi Fi calling. Some people think
(01:03:25):
if they do the Wi Fi calling on board a
cruise ship that it will count and it doesn't. But
the What's App does work.
Speaker 1 (01:03:31):
But you have to have an Internet connection.
Speaker 2 (01:03:33):
Yes, you have to have an Internet connection and you
download the What's App on your cell phone.
Speaker 1 (01:03:38):
Do you use What's App? A lot? Not a lot?
Speaker 2 (01:03:41):
But I've got it when I need it.
Speaker 1 (01:03:43):
I I really like What's App Alaska twenty twenty six.
Why book now, John?
Speaker 2 (01:03:50):
It sells out. It's funny. They're bringing in bigger ships,
more ships, and they're selling out quicker than ever. And
we've seen this last year. If you wait till the
last minute, you're gonna you might, you know, be a
little disappointed. I've been noticing for twenty twenty six people
want to be on a certain side of the ship.
Most of those cabins are already gone for next time.
Speaker 1 (01:04:11):
Might be going along the coastline, yeah, or the islands
on a particular side. Maybe I want the sunrise, I
want the sunset.
Speaker 2 (01:04:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:04:20):
With that, let me mention to you a great cruise. So, yeah,
you want to book Alaska now, yes, quickly. Most of
the cruises will stop in Juno, catch a Can, Skagway,
Icy Straits, or Victoria, something like that. What's your favorite
shore excursion in Juno? Oh?
Speaker 2 (01:04:36):
I love the whale watching in Juno.
Speaker 1 (01:04:38):
Yeah, you know, when I take a group, which I'll
be doing next summer August twelve to nineteen, I'd love
to have you join me. We're sailing round trip from Seattle,
so it's easy to get to Yeah. We charter our
own boat to go out whale watching and then to
Mendenhall Glacier. Yeah, okay, let's go to Skagway. What do
you like there?
Speaker 2 (01:05:00):
I love the Totem parks and I love the Lumberjacks show.
Speaker 1 (01:05:03):
Okay, the Totem parks are going to be in Ketchi Can.
Speaker 2 (01:05:06):
Oh I'm sorry, yes you said ketch On. Skagway is
the past Yukon railroad.
Speaker 1 (01:05:10):
That is absolutely my favorite. And walking around town.
Speaker 2 (01:05:13):
Oh, I Loveton. I always have to go into town
to this certain hardware store, well not a hardware store,
a general store, and I buy Snickers candy bar.
Speaker 1 (01:05:20):
You're Snickers. I'm snickering right now. Yeah. And then in
Ketcha Can.
Speaker 2 (01:05:25):
That's the Totem Parks and the Lumberjacks show.
Speaker 1 (01:05:28):
There are two totems there. Parks, you have Sackman Village
and Potlatch. I like Potlatch better.
Speaker 2 (01:05:36):
I do too.
Speaker 1 (01:05:37):
I like the drive out there, and I like to
go out to Herring Cove. It is the best bear
watching area in the Ketcha Can area now wild Animal
So sometimes you see them, sometimes you don't.
Speaker 2 (01:05:50):
Right, And that's not a tour you can book with
the cruise lines. That is a Morris Columbus exclusive.
Speaker 1 (01:05:56):
I always do that, you know. Here's another one. We
call it the spring Break Escape Cruise. For most of
the Utah school districts, not all, but most spring break
is always Monday to Friday of a particular week, and
in next year, twenty twenty six, it's Monday to Friday,
April six to ten, and of course you have the
(01:06:18):
weekends on both sides.
Speaker 2 (01:06:20):
Right.
Speaker 1 (01:06:20):
So I've got a cruise that I'm taking to our
travel show listeners. That's perfect for kids or perfect for
a couple. But we sail agust excuse me, April six
out of the Port of Los Angeles, which is really
San Pedro, closer to Long Beach Airport. Than lax it is.
(01:06:41):
And we have five days, five days, four nights. Day
one is we depart in the afternoon, have fun times
at sea. I love the sea time.
Speaker 2 (01:06:52):
Oh I do too.
Speaker 1 (01:06:52):
On that's Monday. On Tuesday we're at Catalina Island. Now,
how fun is that?
Speaker 2 (01:06:57):
Catleena is a lot of fun.
Speaker 1 (01:06:59):
It's kind of like Santa Monica, Santa Cruz, Long Beach,
Newport Beach, San Diego has a beautiful beach crowds, without
the crowds because it's out on an island.
Speaker 2 (01:07:10):
It is, yes, but it's.
Speaker 1 (01:07:11):
A beautiful sandy beach there. Then on Wednesday, a full
day at sea, and then Mexico on Thursday, leaving in
the afternoon and some more sea time, and then sailing
on Friday, and we disembark that morning. Five days, four nights. Now,
if you want to go with kids, Royal Caribbean defines
(01:07:32):
children as twelve and under. I'm looking at the price
as of today. Now. All rates and promotions are subject
to change and availability at the time of booking. Now.
This is for a five day, four night cruise two adults,
two kids. Rates start at four hundred and twelve dollars
per person, including all taxis and fees. John, how good
(01:07:54):
of a value is that?
Speaker 2 (01:07:55):
That is a very good value when you look at
everything that's included. And of course the ship you're on,
the Navigator of the Seas as an amazing water slide.
It's worth it just for that water slide.
Speaker 1 (01:08:05):
I usually hang out in the buffet.
Speaker 2 (01:08:07):
I'm not surprised, Thank you very much.
Speaker 1 (01:08:08):
I just have a bed there. You roll away now.
This is also we've got a travel show listeners room.
I will be your personal host and tour guide. April
sixth to the tenth aboard the Navigator of the Seas
sailing round trip from the port of la which is
really San Pedro, and it's a short drive from lax
and even shorter from Long Beach. But when you can
(01:08:29):
go for four hundred and twelve bucks ahead, that's if
you want just a couple and we go. You know,
we got a lot of bookings on this and a
lot of couples going we just want to get away.
It's five hundred and something dollars. Yeah, as the lead price.
You can get a notion that you can get a
balcony five days, four hundred and twelve bucks for two adults,
(01:08:49):
two kids, I don't know how it gets.
Speaker 2 (01:08:50):
And you can get a hotel and food for that price.
Speaker 1 (01:08:53):
Especially the Disneyland. You'll spend that in a day per person.
Speaker 2 (01:08:57):
Yeah, and of course on this one you could go
to Disneyland on both sides.
Speaker 1 (01:09:00):
The cruis as one, which you would do. I would
do that, you know, break it up in Las Vegas
or Saint George. And by the way, if you want
to drive down, particularly if you got kids, that can
save a lot of airfare. Yeah, there is a parking
lot right next to the ship. Yeah, I don't mean
down the block, right next to the ship. If you
(01:09:21):
park in one of the closer stalls, to walk across
a couple of lanes of traffic to check in, maybe
would take you sixty seconds. Yeah maybe. Yeah, So love
to have you with me. That's April sixth to the tenth,
twenty twenty six. On this one, why don't you just
call the group department on this one they have all
(01:09:42):
the inventory. And yeah, this one, this one's a fun one. Okay.
When we come back at our final hour, then I'll
be going to bed. I'm here in Bangkok, Thailand today.
I want to mention again about riches of the Maykong
Parking Jet twenty percent and John, I want you to
talk other than Disney about some of your tray favorite
(01:10:07):
travel adventures and okay, sure, all that and more today
on the Travel Show. And don't forget my twenty twenty
seven January twenty fourth, Thailand, Cambodia is now open for
sale here at Morris Columbus Travel and here on the
Travel Show. Welcome back to the Travel Show. I'm Larry
(01:10:45):
Gelwicks to get Away Guru. It's been my privilege to
host the Travels Show for thirty four years and I
look forward every week into spending this time with you.
The Travel Show is sponsored by More forr Us Columbus Travel,
for the fourth year in the row, the winner of
the Best of State Award as the number one best
(01:11:09):
travel company travel agency in the great state of Utah.
Of course we have customers all over the country, but
that award is for Utah four years in a row.
Joining me in studio, well, joining me on the show
back in Salt Lake City and studio is John Potter,
and John's good to have you here.
Speaker 2 (01:11:28):
It's good to be here. I love doing it and you.
Speaker 1 (01:11:31):
Always do such a good job to my Travels have
brought me to Thailand. It's almost three am here in Bangkok,
Thailand today. We arrived with a group of travel show
listeners on Friday, October thirty. First, they don't do trick
or treating over here, John, I was going to go
(01:11:52):
as Pluto.
Speaker 2 (01:11:53):
Uh huh, yeah, I bet.
Speaker 1 (01:11:54):
Thank you. But we had a wonderful city tour today
and I talked about, you know, the weekend market. Fifteen
thousand vendors in one place. It's overwhelming. You can't even
comprehend it. And we'll be going up to Suko Tai Pitsu, Nuluk,
(01:12:15):
the Loi Kretong Festival, Chang My and then over to Vietnam.
We'll spend a couple of days in Hanoi, which is
so different than Saigon, and then out three days. We've
chartered a liverboard boat at Hollong Bay, a UNESCO World
Heritage Site. If I showed you pictures, John, you're instantly recognizing.
(01:12:36):
You probably would anyway because you're in the travel business.
But it is beauty beyond description on Hollong Base. So
we're out here three days, two nights, and then fly
to Saigon now known as Ho Chi Min City, spent
a couple of days there and then off we come home.
So I'm just so excited to be back here. I
(01:12:57):
honestly feel at home. It's as I said, I could
live here. Now you want to, let's play stump the dummy. Okay,
I'll let you decide what role yours is. Kathy and
I left on Thursday, October thirtieth, and we drove out
(01:13:18):
to the airport. Where did we park our car?
Speaker 2 (01:13:21):
My bed was parking jet?
Speaker 1 (01:13:22):
How does he do it?
Speaker 2 (01:13:24):
That's where I park.
Speaker 1 (01:13:25):
That's right. Hey, listen, you you want a twenty percent discount,
go to Morris Columbus dot com. Morris Coolumbus dot com.
On the homepage, click on resources. That's resources, and then
you just click on Salt Lake Airport Discount twenty percent off.
Ask for a free car wash. You have to have
(01:13:47):
a coupon. It's a free coupon. Ask them for that.
I always get it when I drive in because not
all the all the van drivers have them. So as
I come in and say I'm going to park here,
I'm going to park there, give me a free car
wash coupon and it's right there on set. I like
it because I really am tied into buy local. Yes,
(01:14:11):
I really believe in that. And if you believe in
buying local, where the money, the investment all stays here
at home rather than to some corporate entity. And not
that that's a bad thing, but I want to shop.
Parking Jet is the only major off airport close to airport.
(01:14:32):
It's even better than parking in the economy lot at the.
Speaker 2 (01:14:35):
Airport, much better, and it's less money.
Speaker 1 (01:14:37):
It's less money with it, you know, in the twenty
percent discount. You go to the economy no offense to
the airport, but you have to slog your bags to
a pickup point.
Speaker 2 (01:14:48):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:14:49):
Talk about winter time or the rain or the snow
or the cold. Yeah yeah. And here they pick you
up at your car and drop you at the front
door of the terminal. So that's parking. And yet Morriscolumbus
dot com click on resources, click on the airport parking discount.
I want to mention again one of my most exciting
(01:15:10):
tours is the riches of the Mae Kong. This is
an Alma Waterways. I explained what we did on the
Send River with buying half of the ship. Well we
did the same thing on the Maekong River. This is
from Sien Reap, the home of Anchor Wat, one of
the great wonders of the world, through Cambodia and Vietnam,
(01:15:32):
down to Saigon now known as Hochi Min City. Now
we'll see the big cities Panan Pen, Saigon, Sen Reap,
but we get to the backwaters, the villages that are
frozen in time. One one fun story. We were in
Panan Pen and you know, has a very French architecture,
colonial atmosphere, and the King's palace is there. They have
(01:15:56):
a king and so there's a little three vehicle, two
wheels in the back, one in the front, called a cyclo,
and the man in the back is pedaling, think of
a rickshaw, but he's in back pedaling and there's a seat.
So I have my group there and they were there
(01:16:16):
with all the cyclothes and I say to the organizer,
I say one or two people per cyclo. He looks
at me, he looks at the group, he looks at
the cyclones, he looks back to the group, looks at
the cyclothes again, looks to me and says one American,
(01:16:37):
two Cambodians. We have so much fun. This is the
November ninth to the sixteenth, twenty twenty six, with pre
cruise options to Bangkok and anchor Wat. These savings are
anywhere from say five six hundred dollars per person to
over one thousand dollars per person. All of the details
(01:16:59):
go to Morris Kale dot com. On the homepage, click
on Morris Murdoch Escorted Tours, Click on the geographic destination.
If it's a cruise, click on cruise. If I'm going
to bed, and I'll talk to you next week from
Vietnam here on the Travel Show
