Speaker 1 (00:00):
Yeah, it's Hey. Listen, when you look at the last
two years of our games actually against acc opponents. We've
played seven games now in the last two seasons, we're
three and four. Of our four losses, they all came
(00:21):
by one possession, you know, so we've been right there.
The fact that you know, we almost had a chance
to win all three of them this year is a
credit to coach and the program and everything that they're
doing over in Burton and Schegman on a daily basis.
But it was a very stressful game because you just
(00:44):
you want it so bad for that group, and you
knew how much that was going to mean to them,
to the fan base, the validation that that brings to
the program and what they've been doing since coach Moore
got here. So you want it so bad, and you know,
set all of that aside. It was a great college
football game. I mean, if you were just a fan
(01:08):
of college football, that was a great That was a
great game to watch, a lot of excitement, you know,
good plays defensively, you know, great athletes on the field.
It was. It was great to obviously be on the
winning end of it, but yeah, really exciting day for
our football program.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
I was going to bring that up. I go to
about fifteen football games a year, and that was the
most fun I've had in a long time. I got
in it with the crowd, and there were times where
I had to go to the bathroom and I ran
to the bathroom and ran back because I didn't want
to miss what was going on on the field. It
was like, I have so many favorite moments from that.
But the best thing I think that just gives me
(01:48):
goosebumps is that last play where I look around and
the place is rocking and the juice in the rank.
I've never felt it like that. With thirty eight thousand strong.
That had to a had something extra for that team
to get the job done on defense. I just feel
like the twelfth Man was definitely involved in a big
reason for that win.
Speaker 1 (02:09):
Yeah. Look, I I being up in the suite. I
don't know that I felt it as much as as
obviously you could if you were out amongst the group,
you could certainly hear it and get a sense. But
it was more what I saw in the stands and
(02:32):
seeing people up on their feet and waving their hands
and you know, hollering and screaming. You could see that
and that was that was great to see. And like
I said, there were a lot of big plays to celebrate,
and so you know, the fans responded. We had a
(02:53):
great crowd. It was it was a great environment for
college football statka. So yeah, that's what we We got
to replicate that more often. We got one more. That's right.
Speaker 3 (03:07):
Talking to David Benedict, the athletic director of the University
of Connecticut, when we talk about bulls and stuff, do
they go through you and to find out where we
might play in a bowl? I mean, how do bulls
get picked?
Speaker 1 (03:19):
Is it?
Speaker 3 (03:19):
Is it all about your your record?
Speaker 1 (03:22):
Yeah, it goes through me. They just call me and say, hey, Dave,
what ball do you want to play in? And then
you know that's where we go down. Yeah, it's a
little it's a little unique from the standpoint that you know,
most bowls have you know, several conference tie ins, and
(03:43):
bulls have evolved in the nature of the tie ins
with the schools or the conferences have evolved in a
way over the course of the last decade. And then
you add in the football Playoff and the growth of
the football playoff. So it's I think it's actually better
(04:03):
for us in a lot of ways because we don't
necessarily have any specific tie ins, but I think it
creates more opportunity for us to find good, good opportunities.
And what I would tell you the biggest impacts on
our ability to land in a really good situation is
(04:26):
one we You know, we showed up in a huge
way last year at Fenway, both as a team and
how we competed, but also our fan base. And then
to follow that up with a really good football season.
And look, we've got two more games left that are
really critical and finishing nine and three versus seven and
(04:52):
five is a huge difference from a public perception standpoint.
So we've got a lot of work to do still.
But I I think if we're capable of taking care
of business, then we will have a really good opportunity
to play in a bowl that I'm sure will will
be a reward for a great year.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
A couple more opportunities. One more at the Air Force
in this week. It's a noon kickoff. Can't wait to
get that game underway. Definitely a different look with this
Air Force team coming in that runs the ball all
over the place, But you're right, we need those two
wins to make us look even sexier and put this
team in the potential spot that they can get their
ten win season. That's never happened for this club, so
(05:37):
hopefully they can get that as well. We have some
l football on Thursday. We've got the men's soccer team
trying to win a Big East championship against Akron. I
think this is in Annapolis. How big is this for
this program. We don't really hit this program as much
as we do the basketball or the football, but for
them to win a Big East over this team that
Adam Jardino's taught me. Akron is like a powerhouse in
(05:59):
biggie soccer.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
Akron I would tell you that their university, that is
their premier sport. So if you you know we've got
we've got teams that we compete in the Hockey East
against that you know there there are other sports are
in other conferences, but like you know, hockey is their
(06:24):
premier sport at Akron, soccer is the premier sport there.
They won national championships, They invest a ton of resources
into it and so you know the fact that we
went and beat them at their place earlier in the year.
We've got obviously another great opportunity to compete against them.
But look, Coach Bondi's put this program in a position
(06:47):
this year. The team has competing in a way that
you know, we expect to be in the NCAA tournament
regardless of what happens in the Big East. But being
able to finish well and win another game against a
very highly ranked opponent is would only help us in
(07:08):
terms of seeding and positioning. And no different than you
know men's women's basketball. When you're in a sixty fourteen tournament,
seating really matters. You've got potential home field ramifications, you've
got potential buy ramifications. So there's a lot riding on
these next two potential opportunities in the biggest championship. And
(07:32):
obviously very excited for them and very happy for Chris
and his staff.
Speaker 3 (07:39):
I wanted to ask you about the betting scandal that's
going on and not the poker games, the others off
of baseball and the do you discuss that with some
of your different teams or their head coaches, and to
just put it out there and be like, listen, you
know you might get approached by you know, certain people
(07:59):
to do certain things, and just make sure that that
they're aware of it, because I honestly think that that,
you know, even going back to my playing days, that
some guys are so stupid and naive they don't realize
what all the rules are about who you who you
can talk to, who you can sit down and have
dinner with, and things like that. Is there an opportunity
(08:20):
for you to discuss things that you see in other sports, Uh,
even at a higher level where you can take that
back to college and be like, hey, listen, we we
should go out in front of this.
Speaker 1 (08:32):
Yes, you know, we we try to take advantage of
every opportunity we can to communicate anything that is going
to help you know, our students, and obviously gambling is Look,
they're all aware of it. You know, there's no there's
there's no one that's naive enough to not know what
(08:56):
is going on relative to gambling, the nuances. I think
that you're referring to dibbs and and the potential interest
in gathering information from kids. I don't know that our
kids are walking around with respect to always thinking or
having to think about, you know, why someone is having
(09:19):
the conversation that they are if they're talking about their
team or what's going on with with such and such
player or you know, how's how's so and so, you know,
recovering from their injury. You know, I think it's unfortunate
that we have to get to that level, but but
we do, and we we're going to have to do
(09:42):
more of it because it is clear that you know,
gambling is everywhere. You know, every time you turn on
any type of uh competition on TV, there there's there's
gambling advertisements. Uh, you know, it's all over you know,
all your social media platforms. I mean, so it's it's
(10:03):
in front of them on a day to day basis,
and uh, there's no way we can stop or prevent
that from happening. But as you said, we've got to
do everything we possibly can to make them aware and
educate them the best the best we can. Unfortunately, that's
not going to prevent things from happening. We're starting to
see that now and I can't imagine that there's not
(10:26):
going to be more in the future, but we'll do
the absolute best we possibly can.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
Trying to fill out my field hockey bracket for NCAA
Division one Women's I don't know if you get into
that at all as far as brackets.
Speaker 1 (10:38):
Going to work, we're opening up with a hey, listen.
Speaker 2 (10:41):
What are the chances against the ACC pretty much pretty much.
Speaker 1 (10:46):
We played our women's basketball team compete against Louisville and
Florida State, you know, football, you know, several teams. Now
we've got field hockey going against Wakes.
Speaker 2 (10:55):
So taking all their butts.
Speaker 1 (10:57):
You know, hey, it's a it's a great opportunity. I
talked to coach Caddie, you know, obviously disappointing to lose
an overtime in the Big East Championship. Had a chance
to repeat, obviously after winning last year. But hey, to
their credit, they put themselves in a position because they
played a really, really challenging schedule throughout the year that
(11:21):
you know, they were selected for the tournament. And he
feels really good about the fact that they've got an
opening round game just up the road in Boston and
are going to be competing against Wake fourth. So they're
excited that the teams excited. They were on their way back.
They were actually at the airport when the field was announced,
(11:44):
and there there was not you know, there was not
a guarantee that we would get in, but we're certainly
happy for them that it fell the way it did,
and you know, look look forward to trying to make
a run here. David.
Speaker 3 (11:58):
Always great to catch up with. You have eight week,
like you said, with the soccer and the field hockey
and of course men's and women's basketball and then of
course Air Force this week at the Rent. We appreciate
your time as always and we'll talk to you next week.
Speaker 1 (12:12):
Great catching up, Go Huskis.
