Speaker 1 (00:04):
Back on the Rob Double Show, Ben Darnell in your
Afternoon Trive, Let's talk about Kyl Raley for a second.
We know all about Aaron Shudge, he plays for the Yankees,
but I just don't think there's a lot of national
coverage on a guy who's got fifty eight home runs
switch hitting catcher. I mean, yeah, he's not the best
looking ballplayer, I guess, as far as outwardly in his uniform.
(00:26):
We bring in Dommory from the Hartford Current. He covers
Major League Baseball, covers yukon sports for the Hartford Current. Dom.
You know, take me back to Roger Marris what he
was going through, you know, death threats and you know,
extra games to maybe pass Babe Ruth with one hundred
and sixty two instead of one hundred and fift four.
(00:48):
What do you think his life was like when he
was trying to break Babe Bruce record back in sixty one.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
Well, I'll tell you, you're almost when you read about it,
you're almost happy that it didn't happen in the social
media era because it really would have been, you know, crazy.
But you know, in those days you don't see it
as much anymore, But in those days, there was a
mentality that records shouldn't be broken, that people shouldn't break records,
(01:15):
particularly records connected with Babe Ruth. You know, Hank, Aaron,
you know, experienced some of that for various you know,
for obviously for different reasons, but there was a lot
of feeling then that that day Rook's records shouldn't be broken.
So when they expanded baseball and they and they the
season went from one hundred and fifty four games, which
it had been forever, to one hundred and sixty two.
(01:37):
The commissioner at the time, Ford Frick, who had been
a good friend of Babe Ruth, said, well, it's going
to have an asterisk. It's not going to be it's
not going to be considered a record, or it's going
to be considered a separate record. And then of course
there was the idea that Mickey Mantle was, you know,
the Yankee who had been homegrown and it had been
a Yankee all, you know, forever, and Maris had just
(01:59):
been a quad basically to be a second banana to man.
They didn't Yankees didn't acquire Marius with the idea that
he would be the big star. And so there was
all these things created some resentment, and Marius was not
an outdoing He wasn't a bad guy, never was he,
but he wasn't the outgoing, gregarious guy that maybe fans
(02:20):
wanted to see connected with that kind of record. So
all of those things created some of this bitterness. But
so Marius was under a lot of pressure. He was
under pressure to do it in one hundred and fifty
four games, so he had not only had to break
the record, but he had to break it with eight
games left, which he ultimately did not do. He came
up one short, and the big story was his hair
(02:42):
started to fall out because of the tremendous pressure and
stress that he felt. And you know, the Yankees then
didn't do a really good job of organizing the media
around him, so he was just getting swamped in the
clubhouse before and after every game, everywhere they went. So
that was that created friction as well. So he went
(03:03):
through a really, really tough time. It really got tough
for him the next year though, because when people started
asking him about breaking the record again in sixty two,
then he started to turn kind of surly and nasty
a little bit. And then and then it really got
back you know, interestingly, he had thirty four homers at
one hundred RBIs in nineteen sixty two, and I think
(03:24):
UPI voted him flop of the Year, and the Yankees
won the World Series too, But yeah, that was so. Yeah,
he went through a really, really difficult time for sure.
You know, cal Rawley's not going to go through that.
I think people are rooting for him to break the record,
even in New York. I think people wouldn't be unhappy
if he broke a record. I think today we root
(03:46):
for records to be broken, but it was very different
in those days.
Speaker 3 (03:49):
All Right, when you say break a record, what record
are you talking about? Dom? Because you know, last time
I checked, Barry Bonds has the ultimate record? Why isn't
And is it because of Bond's McGuire and so they
all sur passed sixty one, but we all know why
they say passed sixty one little performance enhancers. Now for
the Marris story, like you're talking that was eight more
(04:09):
games one fifty four to win sixty two.
Speaker 4 (04:12):
I get all that.
Speaker 3 (04:13):
I understand why Maris wouldn't be celebrated with the one
fifty four. I get why people want to turn a
blind eye to Bonds, Sosa and Maguire. But why and
especially when we just had it. We had sixty two
with Aaron Judge and that was fun, especially the last
two weeks. Why aren't we going crazy this week that
hey man, this guy needs five more in six games.
(04:35):
It could be done.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
Well, you know what, I think if he continued hitting
him at the pace he was and he were only
like a couple away, I think there'd be a lot
of hype. But I think for most people. I think
most people don't think that he's going to hit five
homet six games. So I think, see you we're a
little bit closer, or if you were a little bit
(04:59):
closer or earlier in the month, I think it would
be very much like that. But I think because he's
still five away with six games to go, I mean
that's a big ask even for him. But I'll tell
you what, if he hits three home runs tonight or
tomorrow and now now I think you'll start this, then
I think you'll see it. But there will be hype.
I mean, the one thing I would say is this
(05:19):
guy's that he should be the MVP. You know, we
all respect and admire and revere what Aaron Judge has done,
and he's had a typical Arron Judge season. To give
the MVP to somebody other than Aaron Judge, it has
to be something really historic. And I think this many
home runs by a catcher, it's got to be it's
(05:40):
got to be historic.
Speaker 4 (05:41):
Soho I said to Rob today the five home runs
in six games, and then Rob quickly said, man, if
he gets to sixty, that's a huge story.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
It is.
Speaker 1 (05:53):
Yeah, Yeah, he just broke Ken Griffy's record with the Mariners.
I mean he's uh, that's.
Speaker 2 (06:01):
A big that's a big deal.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
Yeah, I mean I don't I don't know if he
needs to get to Judge to and and he's a
switch hitter too, so it's it's by the way, we're yeah,
by the way, we're talking catcher, we're talking switch hitter.
We're talking he just played the same amount of games
yesterday as he did all last year. At one fifty
three's at one fifty three, you know the Mariners are
going to the postseason. I mean, do you push this guy?
(06:24):
There's just so many intangibles in here. Is he your MVP?
Speaker 4 (06:30):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (06:30):
Absolutely, I just don't think there's any doubt. I mean,
for a catcher to do this, to be that durable,
to be such an important part on both both Not
only is he a big part of offense and defense,
but pitching, you know, as a catchers. All three just durability.
I mean, I mean, honestly, if he had thirty just
(06:51):
his durability, if he had thirty five forty home runs,
he'd be in a conversation for the MVP. But with
fifty five, I don't see how you could. It's by
the way, who's the last switch hitter to win the
MVP in the American League?
Speaker 1 (07:03):
You know, Eddi Murray. It's a famous trivia question, Eddie Murray.
Speaker 3 (07:08):
Nope, go all the way back to Mickey.
Speaker 1 (07:14):
No, be Mickey Mantle.
Speaker 2 (07:15):
No, it's not Mickey Mantle answerably, one of the famous
trick trivia questions.
Speaker 1 (07:26):
That a trick question.
Speaker 3 (07:31):
All right, So here's the baseball question we get when
we're out and about from the Yankee fan. Who's your
third starter?
Speaker 2 (07:39):
Uh, I'll tell you what. I think. It's got to
be Schlitzler right now. I think I think he gives
you the best chance to win if he's on, he
can pretty much he could no hit a team for
five innings. You know, I think I may be the
only guy who's come up with this. I think Will
Warren could be a weapon in the bullpen, especially as
(07:59):
a multiple multiple inning or maybe a piggyback guy off
Schlittler in that third game. Uh, you know, I think
he has pitched really, really well and his arm is fresh.
You know, I would certainly consider him in that three
or four. But if you put a gun to my
head and they play a three game series, I think
my my, my third starter would be Schlittler. That would
(08:21):
be my my. That's that's what i'd go. I think
he's got the best arm up maybe on the team.
Speaker 1 (08:26):
All right, what did you see from yukon football? You know,
better or worse than Delaware?
Speaker 2 (08:33):
Well, obviously it's better than Delaware. You know, Delaware is
a better team than ball State. I mean, Delaware went
out and beat f i U in their in their conference,
so they have they have a couple of f FBS wins. Now, uh,
Delaware does. They lost to a power conference team. So
Delaware is actually better maybe than we gave them credit for,
you know, and ball State's probably a little better than
(08:54):
we gave them credit for because they got clawbered by
two big We talked about this Saturdays. They got clawbered
by two Big ten teams and then they beat an
FCS team. So he didn't really know who they were
until you saw them. Obviously, their quarterback is a little
challenged and throwing the forward pass, but Buddy's pesky and athletic,
and Yukon let him get off the hook a couple
(09:14):
of times. You know, I thought Yukon was in pretty
good control of the game despite the final score. You know,
I thought it was over at twenty four to ten.
It was pretty much over it at thirty one ten.
The last couple of scores that they got U I mean,
doesn't really concern me, although I know it concerns Jim Mora.
I just like the way Yukon's moving the ball. I
(09:36):
like the way they run the ball.
Speaker 1 (09:37):
You know.
Speaker 2 (09:37):
I love Cam Edwards and the way he doesn't go
down on first contact. And he's just a tough, heart
as nails type of runner. And how can you not
like Skylar Bell. I mean, he's he's just one of
He's just a great player. He'd be he'd be a
top player on any school anywhere in the country. And
his and and you know Joe Finiano. One thing is
(09:58):
he's a little inconsistent in hitting those open guys downsfield
that he's missed some chances for big plays, but he
doesn't make mistakes. You know, they don't have a turnover
at four games, right, they haven't had a turnover yet.
I mean the ones they had were taken away by penalty,
so they haven't a turnover to count it. I don't
think in four games, no interceptions. So they're doing a
(10:18):
lot of really good things and there's a lot of
season in fun of them. This week, I think if
they can beat Buffalo on the road, they'll be kind
of on their way. But you know, I just look
at them, they're gonna be okay. I think they're going
to get to seven, maybe get to eight again. I
think they have that capability.
Speaker 3 (10:37):
I got Skyler is one of the top ten receivers
in this country. If you just look at his and
argue with that, he might be like top five, number
one if you just go by statistics. But it is Yukon,
it is an independent schedule. Does that hold him back
as far as any kind of accolades at the end
of the season, are getting invites for the next level, well.
Speaker 2 (10:56):
It might hold him back as far as accolades, you know,
because he's not going to have the he's not going
to have a league lobbying for him the way somebody
from especially a conference with sixteen coaches. You know, he's
not going to have that. But as far as the
next level goes, I mean, they know where toy. If
you can play it, they'll find you. And he can
(11:18):
play and they're going to find them. So so I think,
I mean, I would say if if Scylear Bell is
not in the NFL next year, and if if Cam
Edwards is not knocking on the door of the NFL
a year after, I'll be very surprised because if those
guys aren't NFL players, then I don't know what an
NFL player is. And you know the schools that they play,
(11:40):
I know, they don't have the big names. They're not,
they don't you know, they don't have to. But but
you know MAC schools and in Conference USA schools and
and uh you know a A A C squad. I mean,
these guys play good football. They go to they go
to bowl games, they knock off some of those teams,
and you know, I mean I don't know that there
are any worse than the bottom half of a lot
(12:01):
of the other conferences out there, the Power Conference. So no,
I don't I don't think it may hurt him in
the accolades department, but I don't think it's going to
hurt him as far as going to the next level.
Poortant thing is with him is he's on the field
playing as.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
Far as you can moving forward though, I mean, you know,
we talked about getting back to two and two. Can
they still rattle off enough wins to get to ten?
Speaker 2 (12:25):
Oh? Well, to get to ten, they've got to go.
They've got to run the table, right, So so I
don't know that they could get to ten. Obviously, Duke
is going to be a tough game at Boston College
is going to be a tough game. But I think
they're capable. I mean, they could be competitive with those teams,
and there's certainly I think that they can. I certainly
(12:45):
wouldn't surprise me any other game that they played that
they won, got to win some road games. You know,
they haven't won on the road yet. But you know,
ten's a lot to ask, Rob, but eight is probably
eight or nine. Would I don't think it's completely out
of the question, and I think they will get to seven.
Speaker 3 (13:02):
I'm amour Hartford Current. I loved your stuff on cam
Edwards over the weekend. I also saw a little story
from you guys that is this true? The People's Bank
Arena set to open October seventeenth, that's like a couple
of weeks away. They're going to be ready for this.
I don't know if you've been in there or not,
or got any kind of VIP treatment, but is it
true they're really going to be ready.
Speaker 2 (13:24):
Well, what I've been told was that there'll be some
stuff still being done, but it's ready to go. I
mean some stuff underneath. I know there was some question
that I had heard as to whether the wolf Pack
whatever would be able to have training camp, if it
would be rith the stuff going on underneath would be
(13:46):
done for them. But I'm told that yes, I'm told
it's scheduled for I think September twenty eighth to get started.
And so for everything I've heard, yeah, it'll be ready
to open on the fourteenth. That there just might be
a few people with with hammers and nails and screwdrivers
and stuff working around it, you know. But it'll be
(14:07):
it'll be usable.
Speaker 3 (14:08):
Yeah, no hammers and nails during our Yukon Husky free throws.
But when the other teams doing free throws, the lights
will be flickering. All hell will be breaking loose behind
the scenes.
Speaker 1 (14:19):
Yeah bleachers.
Speaker 2 (14:22):
Yeah yeah, well you know, I'll say, as long as
the wireless works they there.
Speaker 1 (14:30):
You go, I better have Wi Fi.
Speaker 4 (14:33):
You have no idea us people on the media side.
Speaker 3 (14:35):
That's our number one thing, man, gotta have it.
Speaker 2 (14:37):
Absolutely ranks ahead of a chair.
Speaker 1 (14:41):
Yes, yes, Dom, you're a gem man. Thank you so
much for coming on and uh talking a little cal Raley.
I think that guy totally deserves it. We're just not
giving that dude enough love.
Speaker 2 (14:53):
Yeah, no, I it's it's amazing to do what he's done.
I mean, it's it's it's there's no precedent for it,
never been done before. I don't think any catcher has
ever even been close and ended Ben shitting forty. But
I mean it's remarkable. For it's most remarkable that he
did not wear down in August, right, right, because that's
what offensive catchers usually do, They wear down late in
(15:15):
the season, and he never did, never slowed up.
Speaker 1 (15:18):
Well, these last two weeks are going to be very interesting.
We appreciate your time, sir, Thank you, Dom You gotta
guess
