Speaker 1 (00:00):
Joining us now to talk some NFL. Former player, uh,
former badass head coach and a good friend of the show,
Herm Edwards joins us now and we'll talk some NFL.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
Herm, how are you sir?
Speaker 3 (00:15):
Hey, my man, I thought you was mad at me.
I haven't heard from you. I said, it's just I
used to go on the show all the time and
he didn't got big time Now. I know. I'm just
kind of one of those you know, when he when
he doesn't have a celebrity cancels on him, he calls me.
So I'm glad you called me, my friend. And I'll
tell you this, man, I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
Thank you you two. You know I love you.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
We're friends and I would never ever do that's, you know,
our businesses and sometimes we're not allowed to call each
other just because of the call letters and that kind
of stuff.
Speaker 2 (00:47):
But we're both professionals.
Speaker 1 (00:50):
Listen around Thanksgiving, and I mean listen growing up and
watching like you know, John Madden and the Turr Duncan
and all that kind of how excited do players get.
I know, it's so you're not around your family and
stuff like that, and uh, you know, it's funny. We
had the athletic director on, David Benedict from the University
of Connecticut, and he said, it's a lifestyle. And that
(01:11):
is the truth. Even what we do now is a lifestyle.
We're gonna miss, you know, weddings and birthdays and things
like that because of our lifestyle. What what's it like
to be a football player? Because I know I did
it fourth of July and baseball, what's it like to
play on Thanksgiving and Christmas?
Speaker 3 (01:27):
It's it's it's a big moment. I can remember when
you reflect and you know we're we're almost about the
same time in time in sports. I can remember just
going up when to come on Money Night football? Well
what is football? Man? That's big? And Thanksgiving has always
been like it's a day where us in America we
(01:47):
know that we're gonna have turkey and we're gonna watch
football game and you're the only game to watch. Now
it's kind of interesting I say that, and all of
a sudden, the NFL will what there something? They got
three Thanksgiving Day games? They don't let at a home anymore.
They have the airwaves, they have coined the market on
sports and it's just unbelievable. But there's three games, and look,
(02:09):
these guys are excited about playing Thanksgiving. Now you get
a little bit, you get a longer rest. It's just
a shorter week, but you get a longer rest. And
these games all of a sudden, these teams, especially the
Green Band Detroit, in Kansas City, you know, in Baltimore,
these are some important games and these are games you
gotta win.
Speaker 1 (02:29):
As far as I was just looking at Saquon Barkley
and he was held to twenty two yards rushing on
ten carries the other day and he's kind of way
down on rushing this year.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
Can he be tired from last year? Can he be hurt?
Speaker 1 (02:42):
Or is it defenses are just you know, focusing more
on stopping him. I mean, I'm not making any excuses,
but I'm a big Saquon Barkley fan.
Speaker 3 (02:52):
Well, he's he's a he's class individual. And you know
I said this last year, I said, look, he ran
for two thousand, He's not com close to that. I said,
if he gets twelve hundred, that'd be a great year
for him. And you look at the numbers. As you
mentioned in the last game, they just mismanaged the game. They
ran the ball eighteen times, you only touch the ten. Well,
that's not a good twenty one year up twenty one nothing,
(03:14):
But that's another story. Last year he ran for what
five point eight yards of carry? This year is three
point eight. Now they're missing a few folks. Obviously, people are,
you know, piling up the pots and saying quarterback's gonna
have to beat us. Throwing that has something to do
with it. But you know, running is hard because what
happens to you when you run the ball. Sometimes you
(03:36):
run in there and you'll make two yards, and then
the next time you run in there, you'll make three yards.
And all of a sudden you throw a pass, and
I can throw a pass for ten yards, and then
all of a sudden you get into this flow of
I'm gonna just keep throwing it because I'm making yards.
But now your best players not touching the ball, and
you're doing the defensive favor because your best players not
touching the ball, and that's never good. You got to
(03:56):
touch the ball, guys, So you know, you get into
that and all of a sudden, the numbers look like
the numbers look, but you know they're struggling on offense.
They're not They're not in sync with the pass or
to run.
Speaker 1 (04:08):
Right now, what is Mike Rabel doing with this team
that you know they're ten and two, but man, they
just look like they're doing everything right.
Speaker 3 (04:20):
Yeah, this is this is you know, Grabel knows the
Patriot way. He was coached by a Hall of Fame
coach and Bill Belichick when he played there, and he's
brought back that that aura. This is how we do things.
And to their credit, I mean, no one imagined these
guys would be sitting there at ten and two. I
mean everyone thoughts going into the season this would be
(04:41):
Buffalo's division for the most part. Well that's not the case.
They've already beaten Buffalo. Like you said, they're ten and two,
they won nine in a row. They keep winning, you know,
and more you scratch your head, you go, well, he's
almost over. Guys. They're ten and two. They're running out
of games and they only got five more. So if
they're gonna win the division, there's no about. They got
a three, three game lead and then then they get
(05:03):
into the playoffs and we'll see what they what they
do when that happens.
Speaker 1 (05:07):
Talking to her Edwards, former NFL player, former NFL head
coach uh Now with ESPN NFL analysts, and I was
watching you, and you know, you do such a great
job of breaking all this stuff down. But at the
end of the day, how tired of these guys going
into the second half of the season. And you know,
you and I both know that people don't get to
(05:27):
see the guys in the training room. They don't get
to see the guys and and you know all the
different things they're taking just to because they have a
bad hamstring, or they got a bad knee, or they
got a bad ankle, And we don't we don't know
all the different injuries that a lot of these guys have.
How how bad does some of these guys feel? And
us as opposed to what we see out on the field, Well, they're.
Speaker 3 (05:48):
All beat up. I mean, and you know that you
weren't happily. Here's your beat up. I mean, it's a
long season. The thing that that that kind of interests
and if you're sitting there with with lives to six
to seven or eight wins, you're still in the playoff race.
And when you look at a lot of these teams
on both sides of the ball, whether it's in the
(06:10):
AFC team or NFC. There's nine to ten teams on
each side that still have life. So with that being said,
you know what, Yeah, you hurt, but it's like, hey man,
we got a shot. We got a shot to get
in this and it's a six to seven game season
now for these teams. And so with that being said,
I always say, the only guys that don't hurt that
play football don't play. That's it. You hurt, that's part
(06:32):
of it. You're gonna hurt. And you got to know
the difference between being hurt and injured. Everybody's hurting. Injured
player can't play, but a hurt player you can play.
And they're excited. I mean, the teams that are in
the playoff race are excited. You know, you're hoping the
teams that are not, you know, they sit in a
position to saying, hey, if we beat these guys, we
might knock them out of the playoffs. We're not going
(06:54):
to the playoffs. We're going to be Christmas shopping early
if we beat these guys. Guess what, they might be
Christal shopping early too. So that's motivation as well.
Speaker 2 (07:03):
Who didn't do a good job.
Speaker 1 (07:05):
I mean, we look at some of these quarterbacks, like
as Sam Darnold or Daniel Jones, how are they underdeveloped
by the Jets and the Giants when they played for him?
Speaker 3 (07:16):
Well, you know, this is you play. You know. Coaching matters, Yeah,
and a lot sometimes, you know, and if we overlooked that,
sometimes we just think, okay, yeah, and systems matter and
is it the system or the player? I've always said this,
the player comes before the system if the system's not
capable of to massage what it is doing to enhance
(07:36):
the player's ability to play. And we got a bad system.
And some of these quarterbacks have gotten beat up, got
thrown to the wayside, gave up on them too quickly,
because that's what happens. You know. It's kind of like
what's happening to the kid in Minnesota right now. I
was like, well, don't throw him away, he says, a
young guy. He's going to go through this. They all struggle.
(07:56):
I keep saying, Peyton Manning through twenty eight of them
to the bad guys. People forget about that he threw
twenty eight of them, and you know that no one
gave up on him, and all of a sudden he's
a Hall of Famer. Uh So, you know it matters
especially now with offense, man, because the quarterback plays with
the ball and he's the spotlight. He's the guy, he
gets all the pressure. You know, in the offensive coordinator,
(08:19):
you better make sure that you're doing things that allows
this guy to be successful. Not what you want to do,
but what he can do. And Baker Mayfield's another one, right,
Baker Mayfiel. How about him? I mean he got discarded.
You're right, there's a bunch of them multiple times. But yeah,
I mean Daniel you know, Daniel Jones went from Danny
Dimes to Indiana Jones to the Colts and they're sitting
(08:40):
eight and three.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
Man, that's fantastic. How about Matthew Stafford?
Speaker 1 (08:44):
He can barely bend our shoes at thirty seven to
start the year, he got thirty touchdowns, two interceptions.
Speaker 2 (08:51):
The team is nine and two.
Speaker 1 (08:52):
Just beat the Buccaneers, which I consider a good team.
Speaker 2 (08:56):
How do guys like that do it?
Speaker 1 (08:58):
He's slower, I'm sure these hits really hurt, and he
gets up and sometimes has to drag his ass back
to the huddle or back to the sideline. How does
he perform at such a high level.
Speaker 2 (09:12):
At this age.
Speaker 3 (09:13):
Well, you know, he's like in the sports you played,
there's some old timers that he said, well he can't
do it anymore, and he goes out there for three
innings and he goes oof. He struck him all out.
How about that? And he's playing right now on a
team that, in my opinion, on the NFC side of it,
they're the most complete team. They're not even close. They
(09:33):
got a big time defense. Defense only gives us seventeen
points and last time I checked, if you're scoring twenty seven.
He got a chance to win a lot of games
doing that. And he's got some receivers, really good offense,
and he gets the ball out of his hand. He's
accurate with touch. I mean, it's fun to watch him play.
It really is, because, as you said, they were nervous
on the offseason, you know, he couldn't tie shooting and
(09:56):
they said, well he might be done. Well, he ain't
done yet. He ain't done. He might be done. After
this ship they win the Super Bowl, he might retiring goal.
You know, go to Disneyland and you know, and play
with Mickey Mouse and take his grand keys and all
those kids Disneyland and say, hey, man, aimist stay loft
that way, but he's fun to watch. I mean, they're
a really good football team.
Speaker 1 (10:18):
You just said something that I say all the time,
and I've been saying since I was a player. If
like a baseball team scores four or five runs a game,
we should win those games. I mean, you know, to
simplify it, it's like we pitched, we play defense where
you know, and in football you just said it, like
twenty seven points a game, you should win those games.
Who are some teams that that are underachieving right now?
(10:39):
Like even the Cowboys are now five and five. They
have talent everywhere, but it just seems like after they
traded Micah Parsons, it just was like a gut punch
and they're finally getting back. One of their players passes
away very emotional time in Dallas. Are who are some
of the teams that are underachieving that that could have
a good flurry here the next second half?
Speaker 3 (11:01):
Well, you know, I think some teams you got to
be careful of. I mean, obviously the Chiefs are sitting
there at six and five and everybody's scratching their head
and I'm saying, these guys ain't dead, man, But look gifts.
You know this, here's what happens in the NFL when
you become one of those teams that are hunted, like
the forty nine ers. They were all beat up early
in the season too. Now they're sitting there with eight wins, right,
(11:22):
they're starting to come back. So you look at some
of these teams that have been in the playoffs multiple years,
gone to Super Bowls. Like I talked about the Chiefs
when I was in the studio this week, I said, guys,
they're tired. You know me, more games they played than
everybody else. Because they get into the playoffs and they
go to super Bowls, you get tired. I mean you're
(11:44):
wore down. And the season of your seasons longer than
everybody else is every year you're playing an extra five
or six games. It adds up, and then all of
a sudden when the season starts. Guess what, When you
play a team, the head coach doesn't have to motivate
you that team you're playing. They're going, hey, man, we're
paying super Bowl champs. This is playoff team. We want
(12:05):
to be good. We got to play the playoff team, right.
So they kind of went through that. They were injured early.
So now they're kind of fighting back and you know,
and they're starting to play well. You know what, I
feel bad for I feel bad for Cincinnati because going
into the season they felt like, hey, we got a shot,
you know, and then Burroughs gets hurt and then they're
(12:25):
a team again. They can play no defense. They're like
the Cowboys. Now the Cowboys defense is getting a little
bit better, you'd be quite honest. But their offense, oh boy,
they're the number of what they're number one offense in
the league. Yeah, and I'll tell you your team that
to me, coaching matters. The Chicago Bears, Caleb Williams, the
(12:47):
turnaround of that football team and that football player. They
are eight and three. And if someone would have told
you right now, after eleven games the NFC North, the
Chicago Bears be in front of the Green Bay Packers.
This is the short lines. You go, There ain't no
way that's gonna happen. Yeah, it's happening.
Speaker 1 (13:08):
Well, my friend, have a great Thanksgiving. I won't wait
so long to call you. I appreciate you, I love you,
and have a great Thanksgiving with the family and I'll
talk to you soon.
Speaker 3 (13:17):
You do the same, my friend, thanks for having me.
Speaker 2 (13:19):
I appreciate you, I will appreciate you
