Speaker 1 (00:03):
Back on the rob Double showed Ben Darnell in your
Afternoon Drive. Thank you for keeping us on the air.
And this guy keeps us on the air every time
we get him. We love talking to him. Jim Duquette
former MLBGM with the Mets and the Orioles. Now he's
got his own show on Sirius XM, the MLB channel.
He's also on SNY Masson and the MLB Network. So Jim,
(00:23):
how are you, buddy?
Speaker 2 (00:25):
What's up? Guys? How are we doing today?
Speaker 1 (00:27):
We're doing good. We were just watching the Cubs there
in rare form again today. Let me ask you about
like Peter crow Armstrong and used to be a Met
and I know recently you've talked about some bad trades
and stuff like that. He was part of the Hobby
Bayez trade that went the other way. You know, when
you're making trades like that for a rental and we're
(00:49):
going to see some of these coming up here at
the trade deadline. Are people warning you the GM or
are you basically saying, listen, the owner wants this to happen,
the owners to win a championship. We have to take
some risks.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
I think, I mean, you're doing both really, I mean
you're you know, I think, yeah, you know, the key
the key, And I think where the mistake was was
in the Pete row Armstrong evaluation was you know, I
think that was the twenty twenty season and he was
injured and they really they really didn't get a good
look at what he was and so you know, in
(01:26):
that particular situation, you know, the evaluation was incomplete and
they felt like you know, they knew the player, they
were taking a guess and you were feeling pressure from
a new owner to make a deal. So like you
know that that usually you can you can point to
certain factors on why they turned out the way they did.
That's that's in that particular case. Yeah, they didn't have
(01:47):
a very good evaluation, but it was also incomplete because
of the injury. So I mean, I mean, this guy's
turned out to be incredible, incredible player, and you know,
you don't you don't wish him bad at all, but yeah,
you wish that Mets had a little bit better better
take on their own personal evaluation, because if they had,
(02:07):
they wouldn't have included him in that type of deal. Obviously,
you would they would have gone in a different direction.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
If Duran is dealt from the Red Sox, what do
they have to get in return for it to be
a success.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
Oh, that's a that's a good one, you know. So
to me, there's there's two possibilities. First, they need pitching,
so you could do you know, a combination of an
impactful reliever in a you know, a more of a
back end starter. I hope that they would get better
than that. I would hope that they'd get a you know,
(02:43):
more of an impactful type of starter. But it's got
to be for me, it's got to be major league
ready players. Just can't be a you know, Raphael Dever's
trade where they get back an injured pitcher, a guy
they sent to the miners, and then another guy that's
going to be in the big league like two years.
Like you're making your major league club worse that way,
(03:04):
you know. So like for me that that, you know,
if they're moving to Rend, it's got to be for
a major league piece of some kind of you know,
it could be it could be a guy that you
have for just a rental. I'd be okay with that
if he was let's say, if they made Dylan Sez
the Bilboll you've heard his name mentioned. He hasn't pitched great,
but his stuff, you know, is electric, and you know,
(03:25):
in a different environment he might be better. Like, if
that was a possibility, I'd be all for that.
Speaker 1 (03:31):
All right, So you got Mania's on his way back,
Senga is Senga close to being back for the Mets?
And and what who would you want to try to
get into that rotation if you could? Because I watched
Montause the other day he looked great, Peterson looked pretty good. Today,
Holmes has looked pretty good. I mean that there's there's
probably not a lot of room in the rotation, but
(03:52):
you could always add an arm Who would the Mets
kind of have on their radar to add to their staff.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
Well, you know, I think there's a couple of guys.
So so you know, if as an example, the Arizona
was going to be sellers that you know, they have
two starters, Kelly and Gallon. I would take the guy
with the upside in Gallon, you know, the strikeout stuff Kelly.
Kelly's very good too, so I don't think he could
go wrong either one. But I would target one of
those two guys for sure. Those are the ones that
(04:22):
seemed to be available at the moment. Kansas City might
have old friends, that's Lugo available. I would have coming
back this guy. I mean, he's turned out to be
a good starter and you know, he's got seven pitches.
So I think there's a couple of potential options there,
at least on that side of things. Listen, I think
(04:42):
David Sterns would be okay and right to go after
one of the Marlins pitchers, El Contrast or Cabrera, one
of those two guys, just because you have him under
control for you know, more than just this year and next.
You know, I would have interest even a Contra hasn't
stopped what he's capable yet, but I think it's coming.
You can start to see where it's it's heading in
(05:04):
the right direction.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
I know his contracts unreal. I know he has injuries
all over the place, and I'm pretty sure Jacob Degram
has a no trade clause. But there's been a lot
of talk. Is that is that smoke or is there
actual fire there?
Speaker 2 (05:18):
I think there's more smoke there. Ben. I think I
think with you know, with the Rangers, you know the
GM there. I had him on my show recently. They're
built to win and they're trying to win now. He's
like all in on it. And especially with Bochis there too,
you're running out of time with him being your big
league manager, just in terms of him potentially retiring, you
know soon, So you know, with the window open like
(05:41):
it is, I just don't see them moving the Grom
now if they had, you know, if Molly Teller Molly
was healthy and John Gray was healthy, they might move
one of those guys instead. I would love to see
the ground back here with New York, but I don't
see it being possible.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
Your thoughts on Mike rizzon Dave Martina is getting fired
right before? Uh not only the All Star Game, but
the draft and all that kind of stuff. I mean,
what happened there and what's going to happen with the draft?
Who gets the draft?
Speaker 2 (06:12):
Yeah? Yeah, that was that One's complicated. I think I
think there's a couple of things that stand out. I
think that ownership was getting frustrated by the lack of success.
That was first. I think they wanted to make a change,
you know, or thought they should make a change with
at least minimum the coaches there, you know, and d
saw Davy Martinez a lout a month ago kind of
(06:33):
come out and defend them. So that's not the coach's fault.
I think there was some internal discussion about something doing that,
and so they decided not to. And then I think
ownership might have even said to Mike Grizzo, hey, I
think you got to make the you know, make the
change of the manager. And he said, I don't want
to make the change of the manager. So they they
made the change with both of them. It would not
shock me if that happened now. In the end, I
(06:53):
think it was mostly lack of success overall with both
I just and I was prize like you that they
fired Rizzo, you know, with the draft coming up and
they have the number one overall pick. I will say
this though, haven't been in that position before taking over,
you know, and I had been in the organization for
a long time, like the like Mike de Barlow did.
(07:15):
Now you know that transition isn't as big of a
deal as it was being made. You know you're going
to make you know this this decision on who you're
going to pick number one, it's likely already been made
when Mike was even there. You know, they were already
leaning towards one or two guys and so that and
they don't have a ton to trade at the deadline.
(07:37):
In my opinion, I think it's you know, complimentary pieces,
so that should not be that difficult to trade either.
So I think the real lifting will be this winter,
and that's when they need to have the general manager's position,
you know, settled and find the right person.
Speaker 3 (07:53):
Is there any value for a player in the home
run derby? Can he like produce more interest in himself,
not necessarily as a baseball player, but just personal value
as far as marketability for a club?
Speaker 2 (08:07):
You know, I think it's an interesting but because you
know Alonso Alonso, you know, because of him winning and
you know some of the personality that he showed, it
might have it might have been a little bit of
an uptick, you know for him. I don't know in
the end, you know, charge in baseball to up your
(08:27):
you know, your visibility, uh in general, for whatever reason,
you know that we don't see many sponsorships for for
baseball players. We see some, but it's not as not
as big as other sports. Uh So I don't I
don't know, you know, in that particular situation, if you
can I know Alonso the one year made more money
(08:48):
in the Home Run Deer every winning it than he
did the entire year because they were paying what a
million bucks for the winner and he was making like
seven hundred thousand, you know, close to the middle of
a salary. So it can be beneficial from that side
of marketing. Why, I would like to think so, but
I haven't seen it yet.
Speaker 1 (09:08):
Talking to Jim Duquette, you can hear his show Monday
through Friday and Power Alley on Serious XM with Mike Farren.
You've been doing it. We go back a long time,
you and I. You still a lot of World series,
a lot of All Star Games and stuff while we're
down on the field and things like that. Now we're
getting a bunch of replacement guys for the guys that
were picked to the All Star Game thirty two A side,
(09:30):
I mean, your thoughts on I don't want to say
it being watered down, but it's like, now you know,
we still have no no Wan Soto, no Mookie Bets,
guys that I really want to see and probably some
fans really want to see. What are your thoughts on
some of these guys there that are now being like replaced.
We already had nineteen first timers. Now we have over
twenty first timers at the All Star Game.
Speaker 2 (09:51):
Right, yeah, yeah, you know I understand. You know, there's
going to be some guys that can't like my guys.
In example, Chris Sale, you know, made the Lcar team,
he can't pitch. You know, there's another one or two
Yama Moto I think, can't pitch because he's lined up
on a Sunday, so he can't pitch. So they got
to find replacements there. What I didn't like is, let's say, uh,
(10:14):
you know, Jose Ramrez decided to opt out. He wants
to get himself ready for the second half. Is it
really Is it really that big of a lift to
play two winnings in an All Star Game? You know
what I mean? Like really walking down the red carpet,
you know, in a suit like that's not that's not
heavy lifting at all. Right, So I don't know that
(10:35):
part of it bothers me that there's guys that's still
opt out of the of the game. If they've been selected,
they've also they've also, you guys know, changed the selection process.
All the players select a lot of the of the
second like the reserves. And I'm still a little surprised
that Sodo wasn't a part of that. I know he
didn't have a good first two months, but his June,
(10:55):
I mean, they must have made that decision or had
those votes in ahead of what he had done in June,
because he had the best June of anybody in the league. So,
you know, and where his numbers are now, he's he's
more deserving than you know, half the guys that are
on their All Star team. So and like you said,
I want to see, you know, the fine line. I
(11:16):
want to see the stars as much as I want
to see the guys who, you know, the new guys
who've had good first half. So there's a balance there.
I don't feel like they've really achieved it yet.
Speaker 3 (11:24):
Have you figured out now that we've had this extra
wild card team, now that we get six in for
each league out of fifteen, have you figured out where
these lines are of buyers and sellers? Like in a
couple of weeks, there's just so many teams that like
are head scratchers, and especially now we're Dibbs is talking
about the Reds actually doing some stuff as buyers. Like
(11:45):
what that's never happened. Like, where is it for you
right now? Where we're at in twenty twenty five? Is
a win lost thing? Is it a game's back thing?
How do I determine whether my team's a buyer or
a seller right now?
Speaker 2 (11:58):
Well, I think you have to pay attention to the
one lost record. But you know that because you know
the third World card I mean, the the bar has
gotten lower. You know, we saw Arizona with eighty six wins,
right a couple of years ago, got to the World Series. Now, listen,
you go back in time, now, it wasn't that long ago.
The Cardinals got there eighty two wins in the regu
(12:21):
of their season, right and they and they you know,
they beat the Mets and six eighty two eighty four
wins when they beat the Mets, the you know a six.
Still some people are are haunted by that series, the
NLCS series. But you know, I think you got to
look more at your record. I think that's the indicator
(12:43):
of whether you're good or not. So you know, some
of these teams that are I call them pretenders orioles, braves,
maybe guardians. And you know, I'd say if I them
in another week, if things have just kind of played
out over five hundred. I'm selling. If I'm the Diamondbacks,
I might give it a little bit more time. If
(13:04):
I'm at five hundred, okay, you know, I don't have
to play too much better and I can get myself
into the postseason. But a five ball, five six games
under five hundred, that's what I am. I'm not a
good team, you know, regardless of how many games out
of the wildcard we are.
Speaker 1 (13:18):
I play a lot of perfect game tournaments. I just
played one up in Massachusetts sixteen seventeen. You baseball, are
teams still looking at these perfect game tournaments and some
of these other tournaments and scouting them, or they are
they still going more to college in high schools and
scouting kids for the draft.
Speaker 2 (13:40):
You know what? They are going to some of these
big so the bigger perfect game events, not necessarily the
state ones, not even the regional they have some of
these really, you know, the national ones ones down in Jupiter.
They've got the perfect game All American game right now
in Chase Field. You know older, you know they were.
(14:01):
I think there was class of twenty six and twenty
seven some of the top players there. You know, I
think you know, there's still that funnel that goes up.
You know, if you're a top player in Massachusetts or
in New England, you can kind of go on to
the next kind of regional area, you know, but then
you got to be the top dog in the regional
tournaments or showcase is to move to the next level.
(14:22):
And I think that's that's kind of how I would
always say, you know, I suggested the players and advise
them in the mid Atlantic area, and that's been kind
of them here recently with them. So yeah, and I
you know, I think you can pick a couple of
those events. I don't think you have to attend to all
of them. As you know this. If you're going to
those events, you know how expensive they are.
Speaker 1 (14:42):
Yes, I do.
Speaker 3 (14:42):
If you tell me Matt Holliday Sun's playing, check like
I want to see it now that I've seen his son,
Jackson Holiday check. Okay, that's that's.
Speaker 2 (14:51):
A good pick.
Speaker 3 (14:52):
Do you have an early scouting report on Ethan Holiday
who looks like he's going to be the number one pick.
Speaker 2 (15:00):
So he's a bigger version of Jackson. I think he
can play short step, I think he has more power. Yeah,
he could end up at third, but he does it easy.
He's six', four, fluid swing, power can. Hit he had
(15:20):
a little bit of swing and miss last, summer but
he is really. Accomplished and obviously he's got the he's
got the family lines there that also helps with the
with the dad and his. Brother so, YEAH i think
he's gonna be or he should be the number one
overall pick on on On. Sunday we'll see where he
(15:40):
ends up. Going BUT i really like. HIM i think
there's no question he should be.
Speaker 1 (15:44):
The number one Pick first of, all how's your, Daughter?

Speaker 3 (18:22):
Day every TIME i think, like why don't they do,
this and they're ready to do, that and then he
kind of, explains like the back end general management. Silent,
OKAY i guess.
Speaker 1 (18:31):
So like back room. DEALS i, mean they've got to
do a deal here to get a deal, there and
it's just it's. Crazy
