Speaker 1 (00:00):
Let's talk about the tip off talk thing you're doing.
If you just had Gino Oriema, it would be worth
the price of admission. Because I've been to a bunch
of his discussions. Uh, it's always a great time. But
then you throw in the rest of these people. Man,
this this is an easy home run. How did you
get so many great guests to be at one of them?

Speaker 2 (00:21):
Obviously, obviously Scotty and Kate. I'm a Southern I'm working
with Southern raising money, so I'm working with Scotty and Kate,
so obviously they were here. I went up Stow coach
Oriama last a year ago, agust face to face before
won the championship. And you know, obviously for me and
and for Scotty, he's Scotty and women's basketball because no
poste to getting put equally between the men and women

(00:42):
of Southern. So he committed. Donnie Marshall, I know real
well he committed. He helped me get Phil Raffidy, uh,
and then Maria Connall. We got frankly to Joe Fraga,
who was a women's coach here when they won the
national championship. Then he went to Fairfield and Maria was
a type Maria played him in high school. I think
it's shilling maybe, and then she was a volunteer when

(01:03):
they want it, and Marie was gracious, so we were
able to put it together. George Grant's gonna em see
it now. We got Channelly coming in. They're gonna be involved.
They did. We did a soccer dinner in May and
they were involved. So it's kind of come together well.
And it's a little different. It's gonna be more of
like a first hour happy hour. We're gonna have heavyer
theirs open, bar mingling. Second hour be a little video

(01:28):
on the sixth guests and George got annoy minute video
about their careers a little bit, and then we'll have
a Q and A. George will have them all front.
We're gonna script the Q and A for forty five
and then we'll hope in the audience is gotta ask
for another fifteen or twenty, and then will the last
hour be more meet and greet, socializing, walking around like
a happy hour with desertain pictures. We'll quarter wrap. But

(01:49):
you know, it's interesting because the summer is not a
great time. As you guys know. The promoter name of
this stuff. And now it's starting to pick up some steam.
Now we're three weeks from yesterday out and people are
starting to get that can be a real world a
little bit if a lay with it.

Speaker 3 (02:02):
September twenty fourth is the date. Put it on your calendar.
It's the tip off talk for Southern hoops, Southern Connecticut
State University. Just talk a little bit about the fight
for Division two athletics. Right now, we have coach or
coach athletic director David Bendict all the time from Yukon,
and the one thing that he preaches, he's been preaching
it for the last three years, three letters and you

(02:24):
know him. Nil. What's kind of the situation in the
D two landscape when it comes to the nil to conversation.

Speaker 2 (02:31):
Again, I'll place Southern. It's trying to just get still
the way to maximo scholarships and sports. I would imagine
that I'm speculating the football schools like in the Pennsylvania
League chef at E. Stroudsberg what these teams are pretty good.
I'd imagine they're doing something, but I don't think they're
doing much Southern at all. We're just trying to fund
it funded and scholarships funded. And coaches and funded in traveling.

(02:56):
So that's Terrence showing the AD's responsibility. But I don't
think as much with nil here.

Speaker 1 (03:03):
Talking to Ray Reid, soccer legend and now working at
Southern Connecticut State University, we'll talk about that, talk about
launching these seasons, trying to get the most interest if
you don't have the NIL to spend because you want
these kids to come and come and play for your
program and stuff like that. I'm sure it's very competitive.
We just had the head coach from Central Connecticut State football.

(03:26):
They had to take a serious beating from Yukon. But
he talked about, you know, the interstate rivalries, the the
fighting for the talented kids around the New England area.
Talk about that that you got to bring exposure to
these programs.

Speaker 2 (03:43):
Well, yeah, you know, Look, Scotty, I think he lost
two guys. See one who got really good NAO offers
this year from last year team. And you guys were
good players. I watched them play and it's Frank, Scotty
and Kate, and I didn't realize just I got here.
He's a too well kept secret. He's too flat out cod.
I mean, this staff is good, that teams play had

(04:03):
they defend. Obviously, Scotty played the NBA and had access
to Phil Jackson and Jim Calhoun, among others. But both
these teams have coached very well, So we're just trying
to get them the resources to compete and to try
to help them get the programs to the next level.

Speaker 3 (04:19):
The one thing I love about these two coach is
their local I mean, Kate Lynch, she's from SCSU. She's
an all time leading scorer for that program. Scottie Burrell,
I mean, everybody knows him around Connecticut and he's really
been talking up this program since he's arrived on the doorstep.
This having those guys with the same frame of mind
of the Connecticut student athlete, I think is a huge

(04:41):
advantage that SCSU has on some schools.

Speaker 2 (04:45):
Oh definitely. They both completely get the mission of the place,
how to track people. Interesting side notes, Kate Lynch grew
up on the same block with the Gavit Dave Gabbitt,
the old Commission of the East most you know Danny
Gavitt and runs college basketball now out and answer they
really well, I even knew that I she got here,
and then obviously you don't need to Scott Barrell and
Scott Barell was Scott Barew and everybody knows it. And

(05:07):
when I got hired here to raise money, I spoke
with parents the A D. Terrence Jones, and I said
to him, look, you got to build around Scottie. I mean,
this guy is such a big name, household name in
the state. And he played with Michael obviously on the
West Championship for the Bulls. So we're very lucky to
have both of them. Uh, you know, they're in sync
with the mission of the school. And then they both

(05:28):
had to recruit. They both had to win. Kate won
as a as a as a player, and obviously Scott
won the NBA Championship, which doesn't git much better than that.
So you know, we're fortunate to have him here. And
to be truthful, guys, I'm wanted to work with him.
You know, I'm trying to help him. I'll tell your
funny story to sit down with Scott, to bounce the
idea off him. And when he comes on, he's keep
my heart telling this. Look, I got to ask you

(05:49):
a question. You're willing to douce? He says, Yeah, I
got to ask you a question, and you gotta think
I'm crazy. He goes, Okay, what is it? I said,
can we get Michael Jordan to be one of the
fifth guys? He goes, you're right, you as got the
money's not going to Yukon. He's going to Yukon. He
wouldn't do it because the chapel looks like it's going
to Southern Michael's gonna say no, but he's gonna write

(06:09):
your check for twenty five thousand dollars. Already were not
asking them, We're not asking them. I said, Okay, we
could have trust five dollars a plate if we had Michael,
but I had to ask him what it's like. I
can't hear yes and let them move to him know
exactly right. But they've been great. It's great. Look for me,
guys being home. I was there seventeen years as a player,

(06:32):
an assistant coach, and the head coach from uh basically
from eighties and ninety seven. For me to be back
home and try to help these guys out and the
other coaches out in the ad out, it's not even
work if the laborer loves you know, this is the
first time we're doing this. It's a basketball piece and
you know, I know basketball people, but I don't have
connections in basketball. It was a VAKA. So it's a grind,
but we're gonna get it going. ARI is a great place,

(06:55):
got a lot of good people helping us, and we're
gonna make this Toby a yearly.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
Think talking about a basketball special event called tip off
talk talking to Ray Reid, is that arias in Prospect
Connecticut five thirty is your start time? One hundred and
fifty dollars a person? Was it fifteen hundred dollars a table?
Talk about that, I mean, talk about being able to
just sit around and you know, shoot the you know

(07:19):
what with some greats like Gino and Raftery and some
of these other guys. Even George Grant. George Grant used
to do my games in Cincinnati. He used to em
see the Hall of Fame at Cooperstown. I mean, he's
as big as as far as MC and ridiculous events.
You know, so so many big people that to ask
a lot of sports questions about.

Speaker 2 (07:42):
When we when when I took over here, Coach U
Crane who I replaced, stayed on and he started a
club in New Haven cled South Central for me, and
this is nineteen eighty nine and George Grant's kid played
for US, so I sixed that in the club. So
I've known George since, you know, the early nineties. He's
been a great guy. He mc all Blackerman Steed on
Baseball that he knows, he knew God rest his soul.

(08:04):
Mister Barrell ro Well, he knew Scotty because he was
a kid, you know's raffity. So he makes it. He
makes it a smooth, seamless transition, you know, and you've
got great personality. Look, we'll clip left that Kate Scotti, Uh,
Maria and uh. But but think about think about having
the Rafferty and Gino and Donnie to your personalities and

(08:26):
addrested graffiti and Gino's. I mean, it's a it's made
in heaven. It's this matchup. So we're excited about the evening.

Speaker 3 (08:33):
I have to ask you soccer question, Sir, Ray Reid.
He's been all over the state in soccer. I don't
know if you've been familiar with what's been going on
with our boys in Green. They lost last night to
Indy eleven. I think it was two nail final score
in the Jaegermeister Cup. But coach reid Man like they
started out horrible. They were once again a dud team

(08:54):
to start this season. They've worked themselves into the fifth
spot the USL standings. I'm talking about the athletic if
I haven't mentioned this, yes, but how does that happen?
I mean, how does that happen with the team of
professionals that didn't look like they were going anywhere this
year and now they're on the verge of possibly hosting
a playoff game.

Speaker 2 (09:14):
Big couple things they brought in brenden Burgh last year,
you know. And I was speaking to Bruce, and I
get on good with Bruce, and I said, Bruce, you
gotta be patient here. This is the right guy that's
gonna take time. And to be fair to Bruce, he's
been patient. Bruce, Joe cal Furry, the ownership group has
put up some more money for players, and they got
it going pretty good right now. I mean, they got

(09:35):
it going pretty good. They had some great results, and
you know, the big thing will be to get through
the season and the off season, make a lot of
changes and build on this foundation for next year. You know,
feel again, I'm not a football guy. The people are
killing Belichick. Look when I brought him seven new starters
at Yukona Southern. It was an unbelievable transition one year.

(09:56):
Then't like seventy football players at Carolina. Takes time. It's
the same thing with half athletics. It takes a couple
of years to build a foundation here. And that's what
Brendon and Bruce are doing right now. And let's hope
both those guys fix the plan in the both back
together next season. But it's exciting. It's exciting right now.
For sure.

Speaker 1 (10:13):
We found out off the air that Ray Reid is
a New York Jets fans. He's a Jets, Mets, Mets guy.
Tell me you're not a Nets guy. Okay, all right,
all right, let's talk Jets. Who has to have a
great year for the Jets to be a ten win team?

(10:34):
Oh god, I'm tripling up your wins. You had three
last year.

Speaker 2 (10:40):
I would say, I would say, you know, and I
don't know all of them, but I said it too.
Williams Gardner, the defensive guys, the lines got to be
able to open the poles for the fields and the
running backs. But ABC got hurt. It was like he
ripped his pen and he's out for the year.

Speaker 1 (10:53):
Yeah, that's right.

Speaker 2 (10:56):
Field has got to be competent throwing. You're not great,
but competence. And you know, look, I think, and I'm
not a football guy. I like the Jets, but Aaron
Glenn is off the post Elstree. You know, I think
if I think they're gonna be held accountable, I think
it's gonna be tough. I think they're gonna build it hopefully.
Woody Johnson has given Glenn the rope to do what
he needs to do. I think this is gonna be

(11:17):
a two three. Look look at the Giants stable. I
like Dabel. I'm not a Giant fan. I think they're
gonna get right this year. I think they're gonna be
better than people think. That's great, but better that it
takes a couple of years, you know. And look now
they got the kid Jackson dadd who eventually is gonna
slop for them. So I think the Jets, I'll be
happy if there's sixth and what a six and eleven
seventeen games? Right, six to eleven, you know, I'll be happy. Look,

(11:38):
I'm interested in Sunday how they do his Steelers with
Rogers and Tom. But Tom I's the great coach. So
we'll see. I'm not saying they're gonna win a lot,
but the last time they won, I was nine years old.

Speaker 3 (11:50):
I'm sixty on wo Man, the Mets vibes. How how
are your Mets vibes? Are they on high right now?

Speaker 2 (11:58):
Oh? No they're not.

Speaker 3 (11:59):
They're kind of waiting in the playoffs here.

Speaker 2 (12:02):
You know what, it's easy, right. The one thing I've
come to terms with lately the last few years and truthfully,
over one hundred and fifty two games, and you know
better than anybody, Rob, You're gonna have your ups and
downs because it's just too many games, not too many,
it's too long a season. NFL. You play, you play
what seventeen games, so you gotta win twelve thirteen baseball
you can win. You can win eighty eighty five and

(12:22):
have a great off season. So the peaks and valleys
haven't burned me. What's bothered me is are they gonna
have enough pision to survive?

Speaker 1 (12:30):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (12:31):
You know, to get to get in and get through
around it too. And look, everybody's something. Them catching the Phillies.
They got to catch the Cubs. So they host they
go to San Diego. Maybe they don't host the Dodgers
or the Phillies in the first round. Not host. They
don't go away to the Dodgers until it's the three.
You know, they got to get to the fifth wild cost,
so they played a fourth wildcard and they don't get

(12:51):
the division winners, the worst record. But again, but McLean,
you know better than me. McLean looks pretty good.

Speaker 1 (12:57):
Look, he looks great.

Speaker 2 (12:59):
Love him and ton Ton wasn't as good. But he's
going to be good and spro We'll see on Sunday
what he has. But that gives you a chance. You know,
I don't stand they guy Hensley, if they're relieving a bomb. Ye,
and again, excuse for me to sit and watch a
game with TV. I'm not you going to try to
close out a playoff game, world. I get the pressure.

(13:20):
And yeah, but you know, look, see all of a sudden,
I listen to the fan. I'm a big fan of
the fans. This is these idiots some days and talking
about that these guys played little league baseball and Top
one of football. They talk about these guys, you know,
like it's really May's talking on them on the radio.
It's unbelievable, because I do get the pressure. So to
answer your question, I think they're gonna make it. Right.

(13:41):
They got a four game lead, which the matches them
is nineteen with the Reds with the Giants of hot
I think they're gonna make it if they don't lose
three this weekend to the Reds and then you gotta
hope they get it. They're gonna be on the road
because you know they're gonna be the six or five
that imagine either one the I'm hoping they're five. And
they played the cub because he catch the pods and
the clubs in the three games there in Chicago versus

(14:02):
playing to dodge the Phillies.

Speaker 1 (14:05):
Ray, I'm gonna be one thousand percent honest right now.
It was it was about trying to sober up by
ten o'clock for me. I mean, and the kids. The
kids don't go out now. They they go and they
hide in their rooms, they hide on Snapchat. They don't
have the lives we had. I enjoyed my thirteen years
as a pro, maybe too much. But these guys I

(14:28):
know from David Bell and now from Terry and some
of these other these kids won't go out because they're
afraid of social media. So they they're all one sided.
It's all about dwelling on baseball, baseball, baseball. So that's
that's the toughest part for them. For us, we went out,
we kicked back, let our hair down a little bit,
and then came back and fought hard the next day.

(14:49):
That's got it. I mean, your old school like me,
so you understand that these kids today, too much is
in their head. They dwell on too much negative where
we were able to flush it out literally, come back
the next day and start over.

Speaker 2 (15:05):
Yeah, proba, give me great. When I heard last year
at the end of the season, one of the Nationals
young kids, they were in Chicago. Guess he's at casino
and playing the clubs. And the kid comes in Sunday morning,
like ten games to go, twelve games to go, Sunday
one at seven am. So right away the GM spends them,
puts him in the minor league to spending put him
Vindor leg rest in a good player, a mester on

(15:27):
that day and Gary Cone keep the man is and
like yeah, blah blah blah. Came in at seven am
for a one o'clock game, or eight am for a
one o'clock game. It is at seven am. He had
it in by five five thirty. He was gonna play.
Gary Cone would sow up a mic five.

Speaker 1 (15:48):
All right, I'll give you a real quick question, real
quick story before we go. So we got in about
that time, probably about six or seven in the morning.
One time after being on Rush Street in Chicago. Norm
Charlton throws up up in his eggs, Benedict. We pitched
at three point thirty four o'clock that day. We played,
We pitched, and we did our job. It's sports, yeah,

(16:11):
it's it's just being ready to play and do your job. Man,
It's not about what time you.

Speaker 2 (16:15):
Get in before you go, before you go. You don't
need to answer this because we'll be hump for four hours.
But I'm sure during the season you came out of
the bullk and three four nights in a row, and
then he a third, two and a third. What is
this when I hear this, this is the best from
them all. Well, they didn't bring him back for the
eighth inning because they didn't want a second up down.

(16:38):
You're trying to think he's getting out of the dug
out and warning up, are you kidding me? I remember
I looked at the stats, look at Bob gifts the fats.
I'm making this up now, but one year he was
like twenty six and ten. He won twenty six games.
He's like thirty two complete games.

Speaker 1 (16:53):
He picked games he lost, Yeah, he lost, yep.

Speaker 2 (16:56):
Berdie Jenkins, feva. All these cats are you now? I
know they're so hard now. I know it's so hard now.
Probably a lot more baseball to young age AAU and
little high school. I get all that. The college is
much more band, but still, I mean, you got to
take the take the Well, these guys about toughness. I know,
I know of you, and I know you're a tough guy.

(17:19):
And in a big game you and not letting your
manage and tell you, well, you've pitched two days in
a row. We're not gonna use you in the ninth
inning today. You're like, give me the freaking ball, give
me the ball. Butt's end this. And that's that's the difference.
So I'm hoping they got enough man to me askw
you're the baseball guy. Will the Mets make the playoffs?

Speaker 1 (17:36):
Yeah they will, Oh yeah, yes, they'll make the playoffs.
I just don't know how deep they'll go. But I
think their bullpens better than the Yankees bullpen. Say you
that right now? The Red Sox, the Red Sox bullpens
better than the Yankees bullpens. Definite, Man that that kid
needs a.

Speaker 2 (17:51):
Calling, calling Ante up to rest Alonzo.

Speaker 1 (17:54):
Absolutely, you have to that.

Speaker 2 (17:59):
With David Spurns there, you know, Yeah.

Speaker 1 (18:02):
I would out I would outfid the Yankees for Bellinger
right now. I'd start talking to Bellinger's agent. Could you
imagine that Soto Alonzo, Bellinger, that threesome.

Speaker 2 (18:14):
And they got some good young guys, get Williams. They
got a couple of guys down in the farm that
a good baseball players, young guys that Steel plays. They're
gonna come up to. They's gonna be good confusion of
the team. Yeah right, I love Oh, I love Ray.

Speaker 1 (18:28):
They need to get you up there talking. I agree talk,
I agree, they're they're missing a great conversation with you.

Speaker 3 (18:34):
Not Yeah, come to the tip off talk, listen to
the hoops, but the after hour report.

Speaker 1 (18:38):
Yeah, Ray, read on.

Speaker 2 (18:42):
Guy, guys, I'm gonna.

Speaker 1 (18:43):
Tell you everything. Ray, you are the best man. We
appreciate you, Thank you.

Speaker 2 (18:49):
Thank you, guys very much. Loved it. Looking forward to here,
Scotty paying on it. Thank you for promoting the event.
I really appreciated
