Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right here with Aiden mahaney and you're running around.
iHeart studios because you're driving some Fords. Now, Monico Ford
is basically sponsoring Aid mahoney and his trip to Connecticut.
Being a part of the Yukon Huskies point guard for
the Huskies. You're like the old man dude, You're the
old man team that they brought in for the knowledge.
So happy to have you.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Man.

Speaker 3 (00:20):
Tell me about the Ford.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
Though, you're saying, what you got a new Explorer?

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Yeah, for Explorer twenty twenty four. Beautiful car. You know,
I'm not a super big car person to begin with,
but they've been gracious enough to help me out. Am
I visiting Connecticut? So super grateful for Christy and all
of them to kind of look out for me. And yeah,
happy to have a car out here. You know.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
It's a lot easier with a car than without one.

Speaker 1 (00:42):
A lot of wide open spaces in Connecticut. You may
have not known, Like I'm not from here either. I
thought it was going to be a concrete jungle, like
I thought it was all city. Literally when I lived
in Hartford for two months, I thought Yukon was like
right there. When I first drove to stores, it was
mind blowing for me. What was it like for you
when you like first showed up on campus. Did it

(01:03):
fit your perception of what you thought Yukon was.

Speaker 3 (01:06):
It was actually interesting.

Speaker 2 (01:07):
So when I came to my recruiting visit, they had
me up in a in a hotel in Hartford, so
they kind of they were able to disguise it a little, right.
But yeah, once I actually got to campus and I
started to realize, like, oh wow, like we are kind
of off the beaten path. But to be honest, I
think I think it actually works out pretty well for
basketball players, at least in the sense that you know,

(01:28):
when we're in stores, we're locked in, right. It's a
nice little community out there, So I don't really mind
it too much. But it definitely is something that it's
it's definitely off the beaten path. Another reason why the
Ford is needed.

Speaker 1 (01:40):
Yeah, definitely, That's what we always say. Though, Man, it's
all about ball when it comes to stores. There are
some things to do aiden like I don't know if
the team's taking you out or anything, like, what does
the team do besides basketball? That's fun?

Speaker 2 (01:53):
Oh my favorite activity? We did it over summer we
went to an escape room. So that was real fun
the whole team there.

Speaker 1 (02:00):
It was the dude that like comes up with all
the answers in the escape room.

Speaker 3 (02:05):
Let's see. Let's see.

Speaker 2 (02:06):
I'll give Caravan the credit. That one is a smart guy.
So so he normally he normally tries to rally the
group together to get one done and then honestly, we
all just hang out, you know, go to each other's rooms,
watch football games, whatever it may be. Just I think
just being around the guys after long day, it's it's nice.
It's like a lot of the times, you know, you're
so exhausted after practice and a long day of school

(02:29):
and wait, so it's not like you're trying to go
run around or do something crazy, but but just being
able to be around people, I think it is a
nice thing. And all the teammates have been real good
to me and accepting me into the Yukon family. So
I've been really grateful for that.

Speaker 1 (02:41):
Talking to Aiden Mahan's coming to us from Saint Mary's
all the way across the country to play for Yukon
this year, what was it like assimilating into the team.
The offense, the hurly style, the hurly yelling, like what
was it, Like, Like, who's kind of taking you under
the wing to say, like this is how it is
around here.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
Yeah, like you said, I mean, it's kind of a weird.
It's a weird thing for me because it's like I'm
the I'm the old guy coming in, but yet I'm
so new into this thing. So it's a weird dynamic
of like I feel like I have a lot of
information that I could help people with, but at the
same time, I need a lot of help as well,
especially in the summer kind of coming into here. But
I think Hurley did a really good job, but you know,

(03:18):
trying to integrate me slowly and you know, make sure
that I kind of get piece by piece. He wasn't
trying to give me the full picture right away, So
I think that helped. And you know, just trusting all
the guys. I mean, obviously when you look at Ak
that's a guy that's back to back national champion, started
on both teams. I mean, it doesn't get much better
in all of college basketball if you're looking for someone
to help you out and give you advice with that stuff.

(03:40):
But really I feel like I could take it from anyone.
It's nice My roommate's Terras Reid. So we're kind of
both going through similar things coming in here as juniors
and trying to adapt to this new system. And then
you know, you got returners like Solo, you got returners
like Jay Ross, you got Samson, obviously Hassan, so many
guys that have you know, kind of been through this,
this system and the way that we do think here.

(04:00):
So I think everyone, you know, I think the biggest
thing is, you know, nobody is too old, too young
to an experience, to experience to add value to your
perspective on things. So I take it from the freshman,
I take it from the seniors, the super seniors, whoever
I can get advice from a I'll take it from.

Speaker 1 (04:17):
You had options. I mean, Yukon was the only team
on your list when you were in the transfer portal,
and a lot of people were after you. I talked
to this about Hassan all the time too, Like Hassan
could have transferred, and Hassan could probably be starting somewhere
and getting me more minutes. Even for you, you could
probably get more minutes somewhere else. What was the major appeal? Obviously,
back to back national championships, you want to be a
part of that. But what was some of the appeal

(04:39):
to this program that you wanted to be a part of.

Speaker 2 (04:42):
Yeah, I mean, I think the biggest thing for me
was just was just Hurley as a whole. I mean,
I was I was in a good situation right now.
I feel like I love you, Terris. But Terras was
in a little bit of a different situation when he
hit the transfer portal. They had had a really tough
year and his coach had left and everything. I had
a pretty stable situation where I was where you know,

(05:05):
I knew what I was getting when we were you know, consistent,
like twenty to twenty five ranked team.

Speaker 3 (05:11):
So it was a little different for me.

Speaker 2 (05:13):
I feel like it wasn't like I was leaving somewhere
that was awful to try to get somewhere better. So
my biggest thing that I was looking for was where
am I going to get pushed? You know, Like, I know,
I can be comfortable at Saint Mary's and you know,
still produce well, but I didn't think I would ever
be able to kind of get to my own level
that I needed to get to for the long run.

(05:34):
And I feel like, you know, right now, you know,
you might see some of the bumps that go into
becoming the best version of yourself, But I think that
I'm getting pushed to be that, and I think that's
the most important part. And I don't know where else
in the country I would get that right more than
what I'm getting here with Coach Hurley and the staff
and the players.

Speaker 1 (05:51):
Well, not only your three point shooting, not only your
knowledge and being a great point guard in the game.
But Saturday, we play the Zags, dude, and like, you're
kind of the guy that's played this team and knows
somewhat of the blueprint. I know it's a different roster,
a different team, but you're used to playing these Bulldogs
a lot, like two times, three times, even four times
a year sometimes Saint Mary's and Gonzaga get together. What

(06:12):
can you tell us, like, have you talked about this
at all? Have they picked your brain at all about
what to expect on Saturday when you guys play the
Gonzaga at Bulldogs.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
Yeah, I mean, it's it's an interesting thing because obviously,
you know, I have a lot of familiarity with them
over the past two years, but I'm playing them now
in a new system with a new team with new teammates,
all of who have different abilities than what former teammates had.
So I think my biggest thing is just carry my
confidence into it. You know, the coaching staff, you know,

(06:42):
they'll they'll figure out what to do. I don't need
to they don't need to pick.

Speaker 1 (06:45):
You don't go in there and like, hey man, let
me suggest this, you guys should do this.

Speaker 3 (06:49):
No, none of that. I trust.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
I trust them to do what they do and they
do it at the highest level. So there's nothing going
on with that. But I think, you know, the guys
know what it is. Some of the guys on the
team have also played them in the last two years,
and they're a really good team, you know, really good offense.
I think they're the second highest offense in the country
this year. Coach Huter does a really good job of
getting his guys there. They got some transfers and they're

(07:12):
old now. The group of guys have been together for
like three or three four years, a couple of them,
so you know, I'm excited. But I think I was
just talking to my guy Tyler Ruff on the car
ride over and we were saying, I'm almost more excited
just to be able to play an MSG, I mean
your kid and you see MSG, you hear all the stories.

(07:33):
Freaking Jordan calls it the best place to play basketball
in the world. And now you get a chance to
go in there, so that I'm super excited for that.
I can't wait to kind of see the environment, see
the feeling. I've never never been there and never been
close to there, so that'll be something that's really cool
for me.

Speaker 1 (07:47):
When you were at the Boys and Girls Club I
mentioned for the first time with the wheelchair basketball, you
were rocking some like vintage air Jordan's shirt, Like it
looked like you got it from nineteen eighty five or something.
What do you have like a particular Jordan love, Like
is that your guy or like who's like you kind
of follow like as a historian of basketball?

Speaker 2 (08:07):
Yeah, I mean, obviously Michael Jordan is one of the greatest.

Speaker 1 (08:11):
Wow, Okay you say it like that, I understand to
ever do it.

Speaker 2 (08:14):
Yes, see what you say. But I wouldn't say I'm
necessarily a Jordan guy, although I do. I'm a student
of the game, so I respect everybody. But if you're
looking for who my greatest of all time is, you'd
have to go to Akron Ohio. Wow, when he was born,
and you know, going into that two thousand and three
draft where the greatest player in basketball history entered the NBA.

Speaker 3 (08:38):
That's what I got on that one. I'd love to argument.

Speaker 1 (08:42):
Another argument for another day, my man, Aid Mahaney, thank
you for stopping by. Have fun with that Ford explorer, man,
and good luck this Saturday. The rest of the way.
You're becoming a fan favorite around here. We know you're
gonna pop for some big numbers here pretty soon, but
it doesn't really matter. As long as we win a
national championship. Everybody eats. Thanks for the time today, Go
luck the rest of the way, my man.

Speaker 3 (09:02):
Thank you, man. I appreciate you having me
