Speaker 1 (00:03):
Well in joining us on the Bobby Bes Hotline.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
He'll be calling games tonight all weekend Wrenstler Field down
in New Britain. George Demeyo, he does high school play
by play on women's and men's sports around the New
Haven area and coach, let's talk about we've got the
football championships going around going on right now across Connecticut
(00:26):
from M Double M all the way up to Double L.
In your mind, which is one of the biggest games
going on this weekend.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
Well Winsor is the number one team of the state.
They've been there since mid season. They're undefeated. If they
win their state championship game Friday night against Massak, then
they should finish as the number one team in the
final state pole you know, at thirteen to er records.
(00:56):
So they're playing Massak tonight, act the root Field in
New Britain and tell you what they've been rolling since midseason.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
Now.
Speaker 3 (01:07):
I had a chance to see Massic this past week
this past weekend in our game in the semi finals,
and bought did they look awfully good? They've come a
long way since I saw them earlier in the year
when they were shut out. Now they come back.
Speaker 4 (01:22):
They're looking awfully good.
Speaker 3 (01:24):
Massic Windsor should be a great championship game on Friday
night in New Britain. Again, Windsor would have to be
the favorite here, I would have to say only because.
Speaker 4 (01:36):
You know they've been rolling along.
Speaker 3 (01:38):
Windsor's making their sixth appearance in the state championship game.
Massic about this, there are eleventh appearance in a state
championship game. Windsor hasn't been there since twenty twenty one,
Massic since twenty seventeen, and both are seeking state championships,
haven't won in a few years. Windsor hasn't won in
ten years and Massik hasn't one in fourteen years.
Speaker 4 (02:02):
So two good teams.
Speaker 3 (02:05):
This is one of the matchups. And again, the way
Windsor's been playing mid season, Massik needs a monumental effort
to rest this championship. I tell you right now, if
Windsor should lose this, it opens up a whole other
ballgame now to see who would finish as the number
one team in the state. But Windsor wins, wins is
(02:26):
going to be number one. That's one of the big
matchups coming up, and that starts on Friday night. The
other one. I hate to say, I'm going to gloat here.
We got him on Wli's Well we got we got
him tomorrow afternoon in New Britain. And this is three
of the six matches.
Speaker 4 (02:43):
Guys.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
Three of the six championship games are rematches of games
played between the two teams in the regular season. That
happens because of the Connecticut Football Alliance where they pair
you up with teams in your own class out of
your league. At the beginning of this season, you might
see that team again. Well, guess what this is not
only two teams that know each other.
Speaker 4 (03:05):
Well, these two.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
Teams in the Fairfield County. Our first game tomorrow afternoon
is the Class Deel Championship. It is Derrianne and New.
Speaker 5 (03:13):
Kaneow my favorite two coach I tell you all, let
me tell you had a son, they'd be going to
one of these two schools.
Speaker 3 (03:20):
Well, let me tell you to and then these two
schools when I say there's no love lost, and I've
done their games in the past. It even got to
the point, can't make this up, where the cheerleaders from
one side came over in front of the other cheerleaders
and basically talked to the cheerleaders in.
Speaker 4 (03:38):
That particular game.
Speaker 3 (03:38):
I few that is a true story. I thought, and
I even said it out there. I thought there was
going to be a cheerleader brawl right during the game
because they were talking each other. It was amazing to me.
I mean, talk about not liking each other.
Speaker 4 (03:52):
But this goes out to the cheerleaders.
Speaker 3 (03:54):
Anyway, These two teams, again both from the Fairfield County,
both of that great seasons. You know, you talk about
Nukaina how many times they've been in the state championship
twenty times? How many times there nineteen times, nineteen times.
Now they played on Thanksgiving Day in that rainy day
nu Caanan won that game thirty four to nothing. I
(04:16):
took that score probably with the greatest thall only because
both teams knew by Thanksgiving Day they had made the
playoffs and they both had home games coming. So I
don't know how much stock get take into it. It
is a replay of last year's championship game. Nukanaan won
that game twenty eight twenty one. As a matter of fact,
I'll throw this out. I don't believe Darien. In fact,
(04:37):
I know they haven't. Darien has not beaten Nukanaan in
the championship game. Ever, this could be the first time.
Both teams are very very good. But again it's a rematch,
a rematch of a.
Speaker 4 (04:47):
Regular season game. That's gonna be.
Speaker 3 (04:49):
As I say, there is no love loss between these
two teams, and to quite honestly, I like it that I.
Speaker 4 (04:56):
Could enjoy it.
Speaker 1 (04:57):
That's the end.
Speaker 6 (04:58):
I mean, you know, double l both those games on
w ELI two forty one. Oh yes, first pregame six fifteen,
the second pregame. But take me to the small schools
my Man Bloomfield and Sonia class.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
As I heard, an Sonia's.
Speaker 5 (05:11):
Lucky to be here this year because the way the
Semi States or semi Finals ended up for Ansonia.
Speaker 3 (05:17):
Well, yeah, they won the game. It was an amazing finish.
They fell behind with twenty five seconds left in the game.
Woodland kicked off to them and one of the things
I did not understand, and I know they didn't want
to have a long return. However, they did a squipkick
(05:37):
and it wasn't a very good squip kick. I mean,
you're giving Ansonia after the run back of the squipkick
an Sonia started on the Woodland forty nine was still
twenty one seconds left. I mean give an Sonia that
kind of time. There was an incomplete pass that was
then a pass interference against Woodland.
Speaker 4 (05:58):
There was no question about the call.
Speaker 3 (06:01):
It's fifteen yards in high school from the line of scrimmage.
That took the ball down to the thirty four yard
line of Woodland with I believe eight seconds left. Then
of course the famous past to Romeo Charles, who had
not been a factor much of that game. Well, he
got behind and what if they always say, Rob they say,
don't let him beat you in the secondary, don't let
him get behind you this kid, and guess what he
(06:24):
got in He scored the touchdown with point five buck
in his left and and Sonia won the game thirty
to twenty three. But I tell you what I saw
on Sonia during the year. And I said to the
coach Tom Brockett after the game, he doesn't like herring this.
I'll usually go out on a limb. I said, let
me tell you something, Tom, and it's only mid year.
(06:48):
I'll see you in the championship game. I'll Betett that
you'll be in the championship game. I saw Bloomfield as well,
back up Ben that was one of our games on
Friday nights during the year. Bloomfield. Let me tell you them,
this team is another another good team.
Speaker 4 (07:02):
These two teams are two great programs.
Speaker 3 (07:04):
They're meeting for the eighth time, so that what does
that tell you about their programs that they're that good
If they're gonna they're meeting in the championship game for
the eighth time, I mean dominating their class.
Speaker 4 (07:17):
I would think so.
Speaker 3 (07:18):
Uh, ant Sonia leaves the series four games the briest.
So they're calling it ants Sonia Bloomfield eight. This ought
to be a barnburder. I say you what, I don't
make predictions because you know you're.
Speaker 4 (07:28):
Get in trouble doing that.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
But I like ants Sonia doing this game. I like
to charge this yep.
Speaker 7 (07:37):
I let you He'll be all over the calls this
weekend for the state championships in football. Let me let
me ask you some because some of these the let's
go to the Double s uh championship. You know, describe
some of these teams because I live in Middlebury. I
know Southburry and Middlebury combined to make up pomp rog
are some of these smaller s and at Double S School,
(08:00):
the same way. Do they have a couple of towns
that that kind of filter into a high school?
Speaker 3 (08:05):
Well, killing Lee is is it's a killing le doubles
and she well, you know she and Wallingford nobody very
have to live on the one side of town in
Wallingford to go there. Killing Lee out there the same things.
Speaker 4 (08:17):
So not those two schools.
Speaker 3 (08:20):
There are others that are that you know, have co
op teams. But none of the co op teams have
made the state championships. But there are co op teams.
This double 's game. You're talking about killing Lee, I
mean killing throw the ball?
Speaker 4 (08:34):
Don't they throw the ball in the quarter?
Speaker 3 (08:38):
In semi final games combined, they've scored one hundred and
seventeen points.
Speaker 1 (08:46):
You like offense, Well, they beat Ellington seventy five fourteen.
That's insane, man, killingly take it, ye, take it like that.
I want to take their foot off the gas. Coach.
Speaker 3 (08:57):
Let's put it this. You know the turn wasn't halftime
nine to nothing?
Speaker 1 (09:02):
They do, okay, and that makes me feel good. You
put in like the third Well, no, I.
Speaker 3 (09:07):
Know it does. I know this. We got to remember
one thing. When when you have a thirty five point
league starting the second.
Speaker 4 (09:13):
Half of high school football.
Speaker 3 (09:15):
If it's a thirty five point league, you play running
time cock keeps running, keeps running.
Speaker 5 (09:22):
Come on, Ellington, it's on you, come on, come on.
Speaker 1 (09:27):
Well, does she have a chance to be killing Lee?
Speaker 4 (09:31):
Believe it or not?
Speaker 3 (09:32):
Again, I said, three of the six games were rematches.
Speaker 4 (09:36):
Yes they do.
Speaker 3 (09:37):
They played week three of the high school football season.
I had seen she in Week two game that we
did on w ELI, and then the next week they played.
They had to go to Killing Me to play that
game again because the Connecticut Alliance, these two teams happened
to me killing We won that game thirty two to
twenty six, six point games. Ironically enough, she and let
(10:00):
in that game twenty to seven and lost the game
thirty two twenty six. So can they beat up? Yeah,
the game of loading with a couple of a couple
of good running backs. To their quarterback, Jacobriant is one
of the best in the state. He can not only thrown,
he can run the football. I tell you what, though,
(10:20):
they're going to have to hold his killing the offense
down because they can score points. And hopefully this ought
to be a Danny that's by the way, is that
Rangeler Field today in yucat.
Speaker 1 (10:33):
Talking to coach John Mayo.
Speaker 5 (10:34):
You can find all these games on NFHSS where coach
George is doing the play by play all year round.
Speaker 1 (10:41):
Even beyond this high school football season.
Speaker 5 (10:43):
Basketball hockey's coming up, and that will also be coupled
on w e l I as well. Again, remember the
L and double L tomorrow will be on our radio
stations down to New Haven, nine sties, the AM one
hundred and nine FM w e l I. All Right,
one game we haven't talked about the m Saint versus Brookfield.
The only thing I know is Saint Joe is a
(11:03):
four seed and they've kind of been on a run
here in the last couple of weeks.
Speaker 3 (11:07):
They have. And remember there again, they were losing the
Trouble on Thanksgiving Day, with maybe a couple of minutes
left to go in the game. They pulled the same thing.
They ended up scoring a safety on Trouble.
Speaker 4 (11:22):
They were down fourteen to six. They made it fourteen
to eight.
Speaker 3 (11:25):
Trumble then of course the free kick, so Trumble kicks
to them, they score a touchdown, They score a touchdown
with about a minute change to go score and all
they gotta do is hit the extra point take to
leave with under a minute ago. They missed it, obviously
the rain whatever, they missed it. So the game is
(11:45):
tied fourteen to fourteen. Think Joe's kicks the Trumble. Well,
the only way Trumble can get into the playoffs, Trumble
was a win and get in. They a loss and
they were done. So Mars Patracio, who's the I know
very well Trumble coaches, said.
Speaker 4 (12:01):
Look, you know, we got to win this game. So
did they?
Speaker 3 (12:05):
I thought, and I even said out here, maybe they're
looking at overtime out there in trouble. Not the case.
Trumble came out, got about midfield.
Speaker 4 (12:13):
Threw the ball. They're throwing the ball, and guess what
he threw it to the wrong team.
Speaker 3 (12:17):
It was a pick six by Saint Joe's.
Speaker 4 (12:21):
Thirty seconds to go, a pick six.
Speaker 3 (12:24):
Think Joe's wins the game.
Speaker 4 (12:27):
With a seconds to go on a pick six.
Speaker 3 (12:30):
So they did it.
Speaker 4 (12:31):
Yeah, that's a wild game anyway. They they go into
the championship.
Speaker 3 (12:36):
Brookfield's had them miraculous there. How about this Brookfield undefeated?
They the closest anybody's been to Brookfield during their games
this year is fourteen points. No one's gotten under fourteen
points near them.
Speaker 4 (12:51):
They can throw the.
Speaker 3 (12:51):
Ball, they have a great running back.
Speaker 4 (12:54):
And you know what when you go and you beat
when you.
Speaker 3 (12:59):
Beat Massac, massfot uh and you beat Newtown, guess what
you're saying something Brookfield Saint Joe's the Saint Jose Tinso
both teams rely.
Speaker 4 (13:10):
On their defenses. But let me give you one.
Speaker 3 (13:13):
Stout on State Joe's in championship games dating back to
nineteen eighty. Saint Jose Is fifteen and one in championship games.
Speaker 1 (13:22):
Sound a bad, Sea, You're not bad. That's bad is
a great I mean, you know.
Speaker 3 (13:28):
Ben, you mentioned the one. I know you mentioned the
double L, but you realize he was in the Double L.
Speaker 5 (13:33):
Yeah, I thought you were going to say when I was,
you know, being selfish here, I thought we were going
to get to the Westies.
Speaker 1 (13:38):
But yeah, coaches, al the mater of West State gets
the rich kids, right, Tinky's out crowd of Greenwich.
Speaker 5 (13:46):
If your Westies go to this state championship and get
beat by this Frew Frew crew of Greenwich, all respect
you and your high school.
Speaker 3 (13:56):
Yeah, sure you are, Grantwich making their eighteenth their eighth.
Speaker 4 (14:00):
Appearance in championship games.
Speaker 3 (14:01):
Are you kidding me?
Speaker 4 (14:03):
The last time west Haven won a state championship was.
Speaker 3 (14:06):
Two thousand and two, and ironically enough, they beat Greenwich
in that championship game twenty two years ago.
Speaker 4 (14:13):
I only know that because me, being the young.
Speaker 3 (14:16):
Guy I am, I did that game? Have you realized.
Speaker 4 (14:22):
I wasn't? Like, no, no, no.
Speaker 3 (14:24):
The game was at Kennedy Stadium in Bridgeport, west Haven's
sport late in the game to beat Greenwich twenty to thirteen.
So this is but these two geams there again. Remember
I said they were rematches, three rematches. Well here's another rematch.
Greenwich beat west Haven in Week one of the high
school football season, Week one at west Haven twenty four
to six. Since then, west Haven reeled off eight wins
(14:47):
in a row before they lost the Fairfield Prep on
Thanksgiving heave. But then what happened in this semi finals.
West Haven plays basically a flawless game and beats Fairfield
Prep forty two to seven. Greenwich meanwhile beat Staples to
get to this fourteen to nothing after Staples beat them
on Thanksgiving Day. I mean, on any given day, you
(15:10):
just don't know. This ought to be a great game.
Remember last year's game, west Haven losing the Staples. They
came within a yard of winning the game, the two
point conversion was stopped by Staples. They won the championship.
Speaker 4 (15:22):
Now they have a chance. They're back there.
Speaker 3 (15:24):
Again and maybe they'll get the job done against the
Greenwich Cardinals. And I think Greenwich is well, no, no,
this is out a root field in New brettin yep, Greenwich.
Speaker 4 (15:38):
It's a double hitter, double hitter, a root of that.
Speaker 3 (15:40):
We're doing Nu Canaan derry Anne Greenwich, west Haven. You
can't get a better double.
Speaker 4 (15:46):
Hitter than that.
Speaker 5 (15:47):
Well when you do west Haven? Are you are you
saying west Haven? Are you saying we an hour? Since
you know it's your.
Speaker 3 (15:53):
Screen, let me tell you something right now. I'm not
going to deny. I believe blue and white, but I
say that right now when the game is being played strictly, strictly,
you know, no bias for anything. Greenwich is a good
football team. So you give him that. You got to
give him the props, got to give him the.
Speaker 1 (16:11):
Pis is the highest season, west Tavin's the five seaton.
Speaker 5 (16:14):
If you make them mad somehow, the boss is going
to take your parking spot for you give your line
for Christmas at the coach.
Speaker 7 (16:21):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (16:21):
Sure, great calls this weekend.
Speaker 5 (16:23):
Man.
Speaker 1 (16:24):
We appreciate your time and stay warmed out there tonight.
Speaker 3 (16:28):
I'll do my best, guys, rob Ben, thank you both
very much
