(00:09):
Astros fans, cheers, Rocking Luckey. Welcome to the Crawford Bucks Casts.
Astros proudly bored for you by Crawfordback from Carbock Brewing. You're getting bear
Oh my godness, the Crawford BucksCast starts now Here we go. Here's
(00:31):
Chris Gordy and Ross Furreale. Welcomein. This is a new edition of
the Crawford Box Cast, presented byCarbox Brewing, and it is myself Chris
Gordy along with Ross Villeil and Ross. It is that final week of the
regular season, things winding down.In years past, the Astros well,
we haven't really had to worry aboutthis week very much. Things have typically
(00:53):
been wrapped up the last couple ofweeks and years past. So much more
exciting this way, but much moredramatic, more scary. As the Astros
played pretty awful baseball for about atwo week span. But they go into
Seattle the last couple of days, they take two out of three against the
Mariners and now they are in areally good spot. Haven't locked up a
playoff spot just yet, but they'rereally good positioning here. Yeah, looking
(01:15):
pretty good right now with a magicnumber of two. Just to clinch a
playoff spot, and yeah, you'reabsolutely right. In years past, late
September was basically like, oh,okay, it's extended spring training time.
Let's get a look at the guysat the bottom of the roster. Let's
just give our guys out there forlike three four innings and then we're gonna
go to the bullpen. And itwould be like heavy Bennett sus a season
(01:37):
or something if the Astros were runningaway with the American League West, like
we would hope they were. Butit's not normally like that. I mean,
we those of us who of coursebeen Astros fans for a very long
time, we got a little bitused to the comforts of running away with
it and winning one hundred plus gamesand all that type of stuff. But
this is normal baseball stuff. Thisis I mean, think of all the
(01:57):
teams in baseball right now embroiled inthese playoff races. That's where the Astros
are. Yes, it's taking yearsoff of our life, but at least
they came to life now in Seattle, winning two of three there after.
Really, personally, my expectation levelabout as low as it had been all
season. After suffering the sweep atthe hands of the Royals to go ahead
and bounce back the way that theydid, specially in the last game as
(02:21):
well, when fran Brevaldez wasn't verygood. Impressive stuff and now looking like
they're poised for at least a wildcardspot. Yeah, we had a bunch
of games where the pitching had justnot been on and we were waiting for,
you know, dig deep, whereis that good pitching? And boy
did we see it on Monday withJustin Verlander, a vintage outing from Justin
Verlander with you know where you neededto win more than anything he does it.
(02:44):
The offense doesn't enough. Tuesday night, Christian Javier kind of battled,
but unfortunately it was you know,Raphael Montero giving it up. He's been
bad all year, had a nicecouple of weeks there, we had kind
of figured it out, but man, it was so bad in a big
spot and bottom line was you scoredtwo runs. The offense didn't do enough
that night. But Wednesday night theycome back on a night where Frombert didn't
(03:06):
have his best stuff. He battledwork through traffic and fortunately the Astros bats
picked him up and get the bigeight to three victory. Yeah, what
did he ended with like five sixwalks and yeah, the good the encouraging
sign was and we've just been startto start, it feels like with all
the starters. So the encouraging signwas Justin Verlander. And it's not like
he was just getting lucky and there'sa bunch of hard hit contact. He
was getting swings and missus. Hehad the eight strikeouts. He did get
(03:29):
into that one basis a little jam, but he induced a groundball out of
Julio Rodriguez. So it was extremelyextremely encouraging to see that from Justin Verlander
and not the same level of discouragingbut Frambert unfortunately with all the walks that
he had and was getting squeezed tightin the in the strike zone, and
(03:51):
we know the the emotional volatility thathe has out there on the mound.
So it's one of those things canhappen. You had to. You had
Martine maulden Otto his personal sports psychologiststrying to calm him down a couple of
times, and then unfortunately it didn'tgo their way. But the bats came
alive, and that's what you need. That's what we've been saying. We
just haven't seen it's been like, okay, well, you know what,
(04:12):
the pitching doesn't have it tonight, they're gonna lose. Oh the hitting's not
hitting. They're gonna lose tonight. So that's the way it's supposed to be,
and that's the way we're used toit is. Okay, you know
what, Yeah, you're giving upsome runs on the hill, bats are
gonna pick you up. Or theother way we're out bats on are alive.
Okay, then the pitching is gonnakeep you in games. It was
good to see the bats pick upa starter who didn't have it. Yeah,
And now it sets the stage herefor the Astros. They get their
(04:34):
typical Thursday off. The Mariners andRangers will start their four game series tonight,
So one of them one of thoseteams, either the Rangers will pick
up half a game more lead onthe Astros for the Al West, or
the Mariners will pick up a halfa game behind the Astros but bring the
Rangers closer. So again it's likewho do you root for? Yeah?
(04:57):
Go if you really want to sendyou playoffs with your magic number being two,
it turns into one if the Marinerslose tonight, right, I think
because the blue Jay's loss as well. Yeah, and they're they're a whole
thing too if they lose out becausethey play the Yankees tonight and then they
get a three gamer against the Rays. Rays are kind of still you know,
they're at the top of that wildcardspot. But the Diamondbacks that the
(05:17):
Astros are facing still have something onthe line now. They're they're sitting in
the second waw card spot of theNL, but they're only a game and
a half up on the Marlins andCubs. So if the Asters were to
sweep the Diamondbacks, they can't affordthat to have because they fall out of
positioning. So it's it's just thething where the Astros you just gotta you
gotta think of it from this way. If we go take two out of
(05:39):
three against the Diamondbacks this weekend,we're in no matter what happens. So
that's the way you kind of haveto look at it. They would need
to or that. Yeah, yeah, just worry about in front in front
of you were talking about this fortwo months. I mean, there's like
so many scenarios that could play out. There's where can get in if the
Astros sweep and the Mariners take threeout of four against the Rangers. You
(05:59):
wouldn't wet. Yes, that wouldbe incredible. It's not like a percentage
six percentage or six percent or somethinglike that. Now here's the tough part,
Ross is with Thursday off, theAstros have basically been in a they
have the privilege you go to afour man rotation kind of we are going
to see JP France go Friday nightin Arizona. We're gonna see Justin Verlander
(06:19):
come back and go Saturday. Yes, and potentially we could have Fromber come
back and pitch maybe Sunday or Javier, depending on how you want to do
it. Yeah, that would be. It would be Framber on short rest
on a Sunday, and it wouldhave to be a Muslin situation. Or
also, I mean, the scenariocould play out where you're in the playoffs,
(06:40):
but if you win that game andthe Mariners beat the Rangers, you
could possibly win the AL West andthen have the week off and not have
to worry about the playoffs until Saturdays. So it's I mean, it feels
like I've spent the entirety of thelast couple of days just thinking about all
these scenarios in the way that theycould play out and they always sunny gift
of the Yes, pepe silvia, pepe silvia, there's no pepe silvia.
(07:04):
Yeah, it's like it's just toomuch right now, So worry about it
what's in front of you, becausewe've been scoreboard watching for these last couple
of months. And then you it'snot like the Astros have been taking the
role as lightly or whatever and likethey didn't care. But the Royals were
out there and beat you. Sobeat the teams that are in front of
you. Win a game. Atleast it starts with Game one right against
(07:25):
Arizona. Win that with JP Franceon the hill and sees bats going,
I mean, Jordan starting to findhis swing, a couple of old runs
here lately. Tucker was still kindof one, like, I don't know
what's happened with Tucker here, toweringshot in uh the game, first game
of the year. He had abig hit in that inning on Wednesday night
when everybody was getting big hits. But yeah, a little inconsistent with Bragman
(07:47):
and Tucker. He'd like them tofigure it out. We've had a little
something from Josea Bray you lately too, he said, yeah, he's had
a little something. So you know. The big one though, was Michael
Brantley. I mean, the guyhadn't played ten days, goes in there
and goes four for four. That'sencouraging. Du Bonds had a couple of
shots here and there. So Ilook, this lineup just needs to go
into Arizona and do what you do. Figure out how to how to get
(08:09):
a win. And I don't wantto look too far ahead Ross, but
I'm gonna look ahead. If everythingholds and the Astros get that last wildcard
spot, the Rangers win the AlWest, let's play this out. The
Astros will be going to Minnesota forthe Tuesday Wednesday Thursday for a best of
three series in the Wall Card.If you win that, you will be
(08:31):
going to Arlington next Saturday for Gameone of the Alds. I say all
this to say, if you haveto burn Verlander this Saturday and possibly let's
just let's say they throw a Hobbyor Sunday. They say Fromber Okay,
you can go to Minnesota, throwa Fromber in game on Tuesday. I
guess when Verland will be able tocome back if it puts a Saturday Sunday
Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, sohe could go Thursday in a potential game
(08:52):
three. Yeah, I guess maybeyou don't. Yeah, maybe maybe you
give JP France a shot there.I okay. Just in this specific scenario,
of which there are many, Iwould think they might roll the dice
with Verlander on short rest and thenjust pulling the sign of first trumble.
(09:16):
What about perfect scenario? Though youthrow, you win game one, you
throw JP a Game two, yougot Verlander your pocket if you need him,
you win in two. You gotJV going game one of the Alds
against the Rangers in Arlington. Ithink in the playoffs you can't hit pocket
anything. We'll see. We'll see. I could see playing a number of
ways, and it depends on how. I mean how justin Verlander feels.
(09:39):
He's not gonna say no. You'regonna ask him, hey, can you
go? He's gonna say yes.Well, he could say he asked him
if you want to go Sunday,He'll say yes. That's just how he
is. I bring this up becausethe other scenario ross is the Blue Jays
fall apart here, lose a coupleof games, they fall out of the
two spot. You could win,you could sweep and get into that spot.
But do you really want to goto Tampa to play the race.
(10:01):
It's like, to me, theTwins are the easier shot, and then
god, getting Arlington in the Aldswould just be so poetic. That'd be
pretty fun. Congrats on your pennanthanging at als banner, proud Arlington,
but we're gonna come in and kickyour ass in the ALDA. Well,
if they did that, the disasterscenario, of course, well probably what's
the worst scenario losing somehow out tothe Mariners. But in the playoffs,
(10:24):
you out of the Rangers are theone team you don't want to lose to
Tampa Bay. I could handle it. Baltimore is a really good young team.
But the Rangers, and me personallyhaving family that are a bunch of
Rangers fans, I just don't wantthem. Yeah, I mean that would
be pretty, That would be pretty. That's one you you just will never
live down. But regardless at thispoint, Rosco, from where we were
(10:46):
a few days ago, you justwant that opportunity. Just get in the
playoffs. They're not even there, still not. I think they're up back
up to like eighty percent. Thatthat thing has been fluctuating back and forth
like uh, it's the way thatit's been swinging. It's back up to
eighty some months percent. Just justtake care of the games in front of
you, and then the ships willfall where they may. You don't want
(11:07):
to go against Tampa Bay, butif you want to continue advancing in the
playoffs, you're gonna have to goup against really good teams, and you're
gonna have to if you want towin the World Series. Sure it'd be
nice to have an easier path, but you got to take care of business.
And if you don't beat the Rays, then guess what you didn't deserve
it. Let's talk through a fewLet's talk through a few things if and
again we don't want to jinx itbecause the Astros not locked up a playoff
(11:30):
spot yet, but we're just gonnatalk as if they will you go into
Minnesota Tuesday. Can we assume we'regonna see Martine Meldonado behind home plate in
every game of that series? Iwould assume for two out of three if
Verlander or I would say Verlander orFrambert guaranteed, but we will might even
(11:50):
see him out there against Xavier andthen maybe you'll be a DH situation depending
on the starter. I think Brandleyand Diaz will be your DH options.
Do they pick up a third?Uh says ourselves are still in the space
cowboys right and still in the system. I think ye, Do they pick
up a third when when they goto a playoff roster situation? I think
he kind of do shuttle away atJohn Singleton or a Great Kessinger or whatever.
(12:13):
Yes, I think you need thethird catcher because the scenarios of yan
Air possibly a DH or pinch hitand then you lose the catch, you
know, Maldonado gets subbed in forsomebody in a late inning, like you
almost have to have that just incase of a of a double switch,
you know scenario. So that's justthat's my thinking. Here's another question,
(12:35):
what do you do with Hunter Brown? He's been got up in him?
Yeah, he's he's I think sincethe first two months of the season.
His era is like this is apretty significant sample size, it's hovering around
close to seven. So he's beenstruggling so much. You've seen enough flashes
of dominance from from Christian Javier thatobviously he's your three. And then probably
(13:01):
I guess JP Frances You're four dependingon scenarios, and I feel pretty good
about those four, even with Javier'sroller coaster up and down season, even
with fromber his ups and downs thisyear, best four Joser Keaty. He
puts well last time out. Youjust have him ready. Prior to that
he had four pretty rough outings.I think he's a good bullpin option if
to come in and eat two inningsor so, if you need him.
(13:22):
I almost think Hunter Brown is theguy if you're let's say you win Game
one in Minnesota and Game two getsout of hand and you're down seven to
one, Hunter, yeah, goahead, give up a bunch of bombs,
or try to work some kinks out. Whatever. And I hate to
do that to the kid because hewas You did use him in a couple
of valuable spots last year. Inthe postseason, he only puts a couple
(13:43):
of times. But he's got anyour area of over nine this month.
I mean, it's that's bad.It's yes, it's awful. And this
is a guy who at one pointwas yeah, what was he on?
Everybody's putting him in a Rookie ofthe Year. All all of a sudden,
he had I think a bad firststart. Then the second start he
bounced back and he had like Idon't know seven and his shout out ball
or something weird like that, andso everybody's like, all right, let's
(14:03):
go Rookie of the Year Hunter Brown. Back on June the third Cross,
he had an ARRA of under four. It was like three three thirty three,
thirty five, and his record wassix and three. We were literally
talking about al Rookie of the Yearcandidacy for Hunter Brown. Huh, he
goes from six and three too.He is currently eleven and thirteen was his
(14:24):
record, So do the mass Youwent five and five and ten, so
pretty rough there in the ar Aballoon. So it's yeah, he's not
been consistent. And to look reallyfar ahead, if this team gets Lance
mc colors back in the off seasonand he's ready to go for spring training,
(14:46):
that's a huge if because I mean, at this point, I think,
look, I'm hoping. The encouragingthing with him is it's the same
injury from like twenty one, Lancemcclors finally got surgically repaired. So you
you that hopefully the book is closedon this specific injury with the bone spur
or whatever the hell they're doing withit with his forearm discomfort. And then
(15:07):
the understanding is Luis Garcia won't beready for the start of the season,
but somewhere in those first couple ofmonths he'll be back. I'm just putting
that out of them both now healthy. I'm just putting that out there to
say jav will be back, Yes, Javier signed long termsber Garcia mccullors,
and then yeah, like Hunter Brown, the role for Hunter Brown isn't really
(15:31):
even there going into the I mean, JP Francill, does he deserve it
right now, I would say no, he doesn't. But I'm just saying,
like, you've got so many pitchingoptions going into next year, and
they may even pick up somebody. There may be a starter that they go,
you know what, let's go signthat guy. Hey, Hey,
don't forget Ronel Blanco shutting him downin Triple A that he September had a
really good month down there. Imean, like he had a couple of
(15:52):
really good outings this year for theAstros. And then let's not forget don't
don't disperse Sperch his name, butBsperche his name, Brandon Beelock, gave
you some really good outings this year. Yeah, but it went sideways in
the end at thirteen starts at EraA, hovering around like four and a
half when you had her Keaty andGarcia boat goes down and what like a
(16:12):
week span, it was good toget an innings. Yeah, yeah,
I mean yeah, he's a backupto plan to the backup plan. Brandon
Beilock's not the worst thing. Ever. What's your biggest concern with this team?
Is it as a or poise forthe postseason? Is it starting?
Yeah, I think we stick withthat. Is it bullpen or is it?
To me it's still timely hitting.Yeah, the runners in scoring position
(16:34):
has been a concern, but allthroughout the season they've been pretty good at
it. The bullpen has been inspectacular. I can't remember the stat they
pulled up on the broadcast last yearand over what stretch exactly. It was
September, because you know, sometimesthey jobbed the numbers, but it was
like a point six seventy r afrom the bullpen last couple of weeks or
something like that. Like I'm okay, guys, give up runs. It's
(16:56):
gonna happen. Montero Stannic whoever. But your top guys have looked pretty good,
including Ryan Pressley the last couple timesout. Yeah, so got over
an inning. He's tried to squeeze. You try to squeeze more than one
inning out of Pressley getting four outsfrom him yesterday. Didn't give up a
run. He did give up likea hitting, a walk or something like
that, traffic. And then beforethat, I think he was like one,
(17:19):
two, three and like nine tenpitches. So and over the balance
of the season he's been good. Not as great as some people wanted.
He's not, you know, theprime Marianna Rivera, but he's still been
pretty good. So I would absolutelysay it starts with a starting pitching.
And and like I said, it'sbeen start to start the way that we've
been feeling about these guys. Oh, last start justin Vernon. Vernon lander
(17:41):
looks great. Yeah cool, let'sgo. He's rare to go. But
if he goes out the next time, and especially in playoffs where his ra
isn't great, gives you five inningsand five run ball, that wouldn't shock
you. Play this out, Russ. Let's let's take a look ahead the
next Wednesday from Bert let's say Fromberstarts you're in Minnesota. Yes, you
have a four to two lead, and Fromberg gave you a five strong.
(18:03):
Who's your six, seventh, eighth, and ninth? Relea Graveman six okay,
okay, a bray you eight,Presley nine, Okay, that's fair.
Uh, because I was gonna saythe same thing. I think Mayton
and a kind of out. Yeah, if I got six and if Raphael
(18:25):
and Montero gets up in the bullpen, we better be down ten nuts.
I'm gonna say you might see him, like say a scenario where the Astros
are down a couple runs in thesix. Yeah, you'll see Montero.
He'll try to hold it together, just stop walking people, which strikes?
Yeah, what's your confidence? Whenhe was knocked in and he's throwing strikes
with his fastball, I mean helooks pretty good. And then sometimes he
just go out there and yeah,he'll look wild. It's either he's wild
(18:49):
or he's putting him right over themeat balls over the plate for them and
just tattoo. Yeah. I meanhe started out terrible. I'm sure if
we looked at the last couple ofmonths, Zira has stabilized quite a bit
it because it was a ballooning toaround the seven ish and beyond. But
but I'm with you. Reiterate youwould go Graveman sixth, yes seventh,
Nerris, Nerris A Bray, presseighth Pressley Nice. I'm feeling pretty good
(19:12):
about that. Really. The bullpenhas been solid. It's pretty sure.
Brian braw you and Hector Nerris havebeen your two best really, I mean
both what sub two eras much neededday off of Brian A Bray What was
it forty four pitches yesterday or somethinglike that. Yeah, he had to
mettle, but I feel good aboutit. The Engraveman's not been great,
but he'll give you an inning.Maybe he gives up a run, you
(19:32):
know what I mean. Like,as long as you still have a lead
and he's pitched, you feel okay. Yeah, because Nerris is now.
Nerris will work into trouble too. He's some time every now and then he's
playing with fire, he said.Times like he'll walk the lead off man,
they give a base hit and thencome back to strike out the next
three guys like oh, like why'dyou put yourself in this situation? With
fire? For sure? And thenhe might charge your team's best hitter.
(19:56):
What do you do in their face? What do you think they do?
Target field? Trying to think ofhow it plays. Do you put yourd
on in left for every game yougive Brantley a start? I would try
to, Yeah, you mix inBrantley there. I think you would try
to put your on as much inleft as you can, because Dad free
up the DH spot for either ofBrantley or or you would hope jan yr
(20:18):
Daz. But yeah, and soyan Air he'll you think he'll start behind
He'll play one of those games.I think so, but not play in
the other two. Just I thinkyou maybe d H and one and Brantley
the other. I'm not sure.I'm not sure. Okay, And then
and then the one he starts atcatcher, Maulden is completely on the bench,
and you DH slash left field.Whichever way you want to break it
down, Brantley and and yourd on. Maldy's had a little couple of dingers
(20:41):
lately. He has. Okay, anything you can give us Maldy is is
great. At this point. It'sactually been a good hitter for the month
of September. How do we feelabout a bray you being in that five
spot. Bump him down low, very low expectation for him. Shouldn't he
be six? I think six orseventh. I mean fully for a couple
(21:03):
of games like what we're doing. But yeah, I think that was when
I think you had some guys missinggames and stuff like that. In a
perfect world, you want Bregman two, Jordan three, Tucker four. Right.
Uh, I'm sorry, San JordanTucker. Honestly, the way Bregman's
been struggling, I might even, gosh, if if you had Michael Michael
Brandley, if you remember, Imean, for years held down the two
(21:26):
spot for the Astros get on base. But he's advancing the runners. So
yeah, yeah, exactly exactly.I get it, and Bregman for the
most teams to rise the occasion inthe Postseas's gonna tell you exactly what I'd
do, but Dusty will never doit. I would do al Twove Tucker
Alvarez. A little bit earlier thisyear, I've I have this crazy notion
(21:49):
that your best hitter should get themost played appearances. It's just bust.
He doesn't feel that way, andthat's fine. Whatever he feels out the
lineup. Card I do not butyeah, I would. I would absolutely
try to get Alvarez and Tucker upthere as much as possible. And yeah,
back to back, that's fine. They crush lefties, they crush right,
they crush everybody. Get him themost played appearances, even though some
(22:10):
of them been struggling here and there. And then Bregman as you're four,
and then maybe even they were talkingBradley young Year, whoever a bray You
in whatever order you want to puthim, five, six, seven,
I just if we see if ifa bray You is fourth at all in
any of these posts, it's notgonna happen. No, but even if
he's gonna be fifth, we dida lot of handwringing about it last year,
and Chazz was in center every gameexcept won the playoffs last year.
(22:32):
And then and I think when hegoes for his best, best, best
good lineups, which I think hewill of course in the playoffs, where
I gonna see great cassengerre out thererandomly at first. Yeah, no,
no, no, we will seeDubon out there in the Verlander games probably,
And honestly, that's another thing tothink of being real. We didn't
even mention this yet, Chazz gettinghit. Yeah, how's it feeling?
It sounds like up like I wouldn'tright now, I wouldn't even count on
(22:56):
Chazz. I think you're gonna haveto lean on Dubon and that for much
of the place. Play Yeah,Dusty Baker that he described it perfectly like
Chazz went down like he got shotin the back. Yep, like he
man down, man down. Likethere's a streak of secret services swarming on
Chaz McCormick because he got shot inthe back. Well, we had a
caller on was it next up today? Who? Again, this was a
(23:18):
caller's opinion, but he goes, hey, man, he got in the
back. I bet he got hittinga kidney. And if that happens kidney
and he might be bleeding, okay, sir, then I will just not
expect Chas McCormick got at all thispuss. There's a reason kidney punches are
like illegal in boxing because they doa lot of damage to your body.
And it did look like he gothit like righting the kidney. Yeah,
And Chazz, to his credit,he told Chandler Rome on Wednesday, I
(23:41):
think he talked to before the gameand he said I'm fine. Yeah,
but again these guys always say that. Of course, Luis Carcia said,
I'm fine, and then he neededTommy John. So, you know,
so the day off yesterday and thenthe day off today, hopefully he can
be feeling a little bit better andmaybe it is just a contusion in the
bruise and he can stretch it out, put some icy hot on it and
be okay, okay, Ross,So what's your as we start to wrap
(24:03):
up here, what's your gut? They take two out of three against the
diamond Backs. I'll say two outof three against the diamond Backs, maybe
Mariners Rangers kind of feels like asplit fifty fifty right now. And the
Astros get in as the six wildcard and take on Minnesota and Minneapolis.
The two pitchers that we are scheduledto see Zach Gallan. Zach Gallan very
good Friday night and seven. Nextguy's good. Two. What's the seventeen
(24:25):
and eight, three forty nine forGallant? Yeah, Meryl Kelly's very good.
Then Saturday, Merril Kelly twelve andseven with three thirty eight. R
Raight, these guys are both reallyreally good. Yeah. Bent Trump's coaching
him up over there, man,He said he wanted a new challenge with
a bunch of young guys, andhe got it. It's a little frustrating,
you know. It would be alittle apropos if it's Brent Strom's pitching
(24:47):
staff shuts down the Astros bats andknocks him out. Yeah, come on,
don't say that. Okay, I'mgonna stay positive. We're doing two
out of three. I'm doing twoout of three. Ain't bad. Punch
your ticket. We'll be heading many. Okay, sounds good to me outside
Chance Mariners. It's not Astro Sweeper's. I'm just it. Honestly, would
(25:10):
be twenty twenty three Houston Astros forus to be panicked about this the whole
time and then they just go aheadand win the West. But I'm not
gonna get my ex Like I said, I felt a lot better about this
series in Seattle once I lowered myexpectations. Yeah, all right, there
