Speaker 1 (00:09):
Astros fans cheers, Rocky Lucky.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
Welcome to the Crawford Box Cast, as proud lead Ford
for you by.
Speaker 1 (00:20):
Crawford Bach from Carmack Brewey. You're getting there, Oh my godness.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
The Crawford Box Cast starts now Here we go, Here's
Chris Gordy and Ross Viail.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
It is an all new edition of the Crawford Box Cast,
presented by Carbach Brewing and the Crawford Bach. And yes
it is post All Star break. The boys are back,
not in town, but.
Speaker 4 (00:48):
On the road as you'r.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
Houston Astros will open up the second half of their season.
Albeit yes, uh, if we're to be accurately correct, they
already passed the midway point of the season numbers wise,
but everybody kind of views the All Star Break as
the middle of the season the rest. But now we
get ready for the second half of the season. We
(01:09):
will welcome you in Chris Gordy, Ross Firial here, Ross hope.
Speaker 4 (01:13):
It was a good All Star break for you.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
It was good because, well, you know, things slow down
and it's the slowest week in sports. But it's also
a good time to get a little bit of a
break from the never ending as you know Chris Gordy
for US at Sports Talk seven ninety and all the
podcasts and other things that we do, never ending sports calendar.
It is the absolute slowest week of the year, but
I welcome it with open arms.
Speaker 3 (01:37):
Yeah, it was not slow for US. Stan Matthews and
I were out in Atlanta four sec media days as
well as the All Star Game and festivities, and it
was a second straight year this has happened. But last
year both events were in Dallas. This year both events
were in Atlanta, and so we were able to get
out there. Got out there Sunday, got our credentials, kind
(01:58):
of walked around a little bit in the ballpark village
right outside Truce Park and saw some of the stuff they.
Speaker 1 (02:04):
Had going on, hanging out with Mike Hampton.
Speaker 3 (02:06):
The MLB Draft was actually going on inside the theater
there they called the Coca Cola Roxy.
Speaker 4 (02:11):
But MLB is very weird sometimes.
Speaker 3 (02:14):
Our credentials for the All Star Game did not work
for the Draft, so we were not able to get
in there. Yeah, those were separate credentials, so anyway, we
didn't We didn't get those, so we didn't get to
see what was going on there.
Speaker 4 (02:23):
But the askers did.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
Have their draft on on Sunday night. Took what a
high school kid in the first round. Yes, I was
pushing for one of the big SEC guys that were
on the board, Jace Jace Lavallette was one. I really
kind of wanted the A and M kid that played
with the broken hand. But uh, unfortunately or whatever not unfortunately,
but Dana Brown went younger.
Speaker 4 (02:43):
They decided to go for a high school kid, so
that was cool.
Speaker 3 (02:46):
Uh what Then the next pick wasn'tntil the third round
and they took an L s U guy.
Speaker 4 (02:50):
I'm excited we got back in the.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
In the in the fray if you will see you,
but it's pronounced fry ethan Frye spelled fo r e hy.
Speaker 4 (03:01):
But no.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
I talked with our buddy Matt Moscona covers L Sue
out at SEC Media.
Speaker 4 (03:07):
Days and he kind of gave us the skinny on on.
Speaker 3 (03:09):
Fry that they were a little surprised because he basically said,
he's like kind of didn't really have a position. You
know that we'll see they you know, he's list as
an outfielder. We'll see where the Astros organization translated to
some but as of late with guys like Shay Whitcomb
and all this does it really matter. They're okay, we're
gonna put you in multiple positions. We'll figure it out
when you get here. But a guy who's got a
(03:31):
little pop in the back can hit some home runs.
And so was excited about that one. And then you know,
took some pictures in the next couple of rounds a
kid from Wichita State, Uh, some kid from Taylor University.
Speaker 4 (03:42):
Never even heard of it.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
So anyway, look, MLB Draft's one of the weird ones
because it's like, you know, unless you watched college baseball,
you're not gonna know half the guys. And if you
really don't pay attention to high school baseball, have no
idea who some of these other kids are.
Speaker 4 (03:58):
So it kind of is what it is.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
But it was cool to be around it, you know,
Sunday night while that was going on, and then on
Monday they did their media day festivities. Dan went over
to that and he caught up with Jeremy Panya, Hunter Brown,
Josh Hater. Those are the three ASTROS representatives that were there.
He also chatted with Kyle Tucker and Alex Bregman. Got
some good soundbites from them Bregman talking about missing his
(04:22):
time in Houston, and then he actually talked to Scott
Boris asking him about picking up Jeremy Panya as a client.
So that was really cool. On that you guys played
some of that audio auditions.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
Did we thank you for you and Dan for chasing
down all that good audio.
Speaker 4 (04:36):
Anything stand out from any of that stuff, it's not really.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
It was interesting that Hunter abo and Boris was asked
about Hunter Brown, who's bringing up the name Trek school
Ball and then just talking about how great he is,
which of course he.
Speaker 4 (04:48):
Is going to do.
Speaker 2 (04:49):
And then the sound by the funny one was well,
you know, it's not up to me about if the
Astros are going to sign Jeremy Penia. It's up to
the Astros. Basically, we have a number, yeah, if they
wanted me. He didn't say this explicitly, but basically like,
we have a number. If they want to hit that number,
that's great. If not, we're gonna hit free agency.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
And it's always like, look, we don't even decide the number.
The market decides the number, and you guys have decided
if you want to hit that or not. But no,
I did think it was a little sad seeing Bregman.
You know, he'd been here so long and he's sitting
there wearing the Red Sox hat and talking about.
Speaker 4 (05:20):
How is he limping around?
Speaker 3 (05:21):
He was sitting on the table, but uh, talking about
how proud he was of these guys. Oh man, I'm
not surprised at all how good they are and all this.
It's like, you could have been here, bro, you could
have been here.
Speaker 1 (05:32):
But parades has been great and he's played more games
he has.
Speaker 3 (05:35):
And so fast forward to Tuesday night we go to
the actual All Star Game. Now, last year we were
a little late getting in. This year, we got there
a little bit before first pitch, so we were able
to walk around a little bit and.
Speaker 4 (05:46):
It was cool. Ross. We saw a good number of
Astros jerseys.
Speaker 3 (05:49):
In fact, we went the team shop and I forget
their names, but there was a guy and a girl
that were like, hey.
Speaker 4 (05:54):
Seven ninety, we're big fans.
Speaker 2 (05:56):
Dad.
Speaker 4 (05:56):
Yeah, that's great. Where's Rash? Everybody always asks where's Ross? Matt?
Matt Thomas always tells me too when when they see him.
Speaker 3 (06:06):
Matt, where's Ross. He's like, he doesn't follow me around everywhere?
But uh, anyway, so that was cool. And then to
watch the game. You know again again, the game's kind
of silly, but it was cool. We were sitting out
in left field and Kyle Tucker was just you know,
like right in front of us, and weird to see
him in the Cubs pinstripes in person, but uh, cool
(06:27):
to see Tuck out there. And then you know, it
is cool to be in the same building. I mean,
Aaron Judge, Shohyotani, tons of Otani jerseys.
Speaker 4 (06:34):
I mean, he is a guy, you know, a lot of.
Speaker 1 (06:36):
Internationals, biggest star in baseball.
Speaker 4 (06:39):
That was cool.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
And then I think Atlanta did a good job of
bringing back all the form you know, big Braves Chipper
Jones and a lot of guys like that were THEIRS representatives.
And then they had a couple of guys in the
game that were Braves fans and people went nuts for them.
Speaker 4 (06:51):
So cool.
Speaker 3 (06:52):
All in all, a good All Star weekend in the game,
though no Astros participated because Jeremy Pennon is injured. Hunter
Brown pitched over the weekend so he was not available.
Essock Paradus opted out of.
Speaker 1 (07:05):
The the All Star Family matters or family.
Speaker 4 (07:08):
Yeah, you know what I think, whatever, give you my theory. Yes.
Speaker 3 (07:11):
His wife throughout the whole first half of the season
was like, all right, all Star break, we're going to
go on this beach vacation. We're going with my parents
or in laws, whatever, we got this break.
Speaker 4 (07:23):
Are you ready?
Speaker 3 (07:23):
And Esack said yes, And then whatever injuries happened and
they went east. Sock Pritus, you're an All Star and
he goes to the White Hey, baby, we're going to
the All Star Game. She said, the hell, we're not.
We have a family vacation that might happen.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
Or also, if you remember, you know he'd had that
hamstring injury that he used a couple of days, so
maybe a few days off of the hamstring is probably
good for him as well.
Speaker 3 (07:42):
Yeah, I like my theory better Oka. Either way, he
chose not to even participate, not to even go over there.
Josh Hater was active, he was in the game. He
was the lone al pitcher to not pitch out of
the bullpen.
Speaker 2 (07:56):
Yeah, he was going to be the American League closer.
And well it didn't work.
Speaker 4 (08:00):
Did you know the rules?
Speaker 3 (08:01):
No?
Speaker 4 (08:02):
The uh extra off.
Speaker 2 (08:04):
I once they said it, I was like, oh I
forgot that. I forgot. I definitely forgot. I don't even
remember every I forgot that they did that, and then
when they said it, I was like, oh, yeah, they
added this in and I didn't remember the format or anything.
That was kind of crazy, but I mean, yeah, you
got to do something. You can't end in a tie,
So it was cool. There was a little bit of drama.
Speaker 3 (08:22):
I felt like we left the game in about the
fifth or sixth inning, and by the way, it was
clearing out at that point, like there was barely anything.
So yeah, I mean nobody again, it's it's cool. It's
a novelty unless you live in Atlanta and you didn't
have work the next day. I don't know why you
wouldn't stay, but well.
Speaker 2 (08:37):
You and like everybody else who got replaced early in
the game, like Showho, Tani and every Freddie, they were
all out of the game, like they were literally on
planes when the game was ended.
Speaker 3 (08:44):
When we got back to the hotel, you know, at
the hotel bar, they had the game on and so
we poked our head in there and that was right.
Speaker 4 (08:51):
When was it?
Speaker 3 (08:52):
Pete A Lonzo whoever tied it at six six? I
ever was either game gets tied and yeah, they were
about to extra innings and and it looked like some
people start to walk onto the field and we were like, oh,
they must have just decided it's a tie. I think
Peter Burns of the SEC network goes, yeah, it must
be a tie or something like and then they're like, no,
(09:14):
it's going to be a swing off. And then they
showed the teams and it's like, oh, this is cool,
Schwarber and all this, but then everybody's like, wait, where
where's Otani?
Speaker 4 (09:24):
Where's Judge?
Speaker 3 (09:25):
If you can single handedly pick who you want to
participate in this, and they had some do fists from
the rays that nobody's ever heard of.
Speaker 4 (09:33):
Miranda was that his name Randa? So anyway it.
Speaker 3 (09:37):
But yeah, but it was it was a very entertaining end,
and uh yeah, I think they should do more. I
mean it's what much like penalty kicks in soccer. I
mean that's kind of what it was cool.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
I guess, Yeah, it was fun and you know what
I liked it. It had that the home run derby
needs to bring back is that they did it by swings,
so that you could.
Speaker 4 (09:56):
Watch the ball.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
Yes, because you are at the beck and call of
how quick your pitcher can throw you the.
Speaker 4 (10:03):
Pitches right, and then you can't even we can't. You're
rushing it.
Speaker 2 (10:06):
Yeah, they're hitting four hundred and seventy foot bombs and
you can't watch how of these giant majestic.
Speaker 3 (10:11):
Mounds like anything else. I mean, like playing in the
street ball. You get, you get ten pitches, it doesn't
matter how long it takes. You should take twenty minutes,
right right.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
I know they want to take pitches and they want
to get the right pitches, but you you could do
like yeah, ten swings and three takes.
Speaker 4 (10:24):
Or something like yeah, yeah, no, I agree.
Speaker 3 (10:27):
So all in all, it was it was a good festivities.
There will there will not be a third straight year
of a crossover with SEC Media Days and All Star
Weekend because All Star Weekend next year is in Philadelphia.
Speaker 4 (10:39):
SEC Media Days will not be so take Temple.
Speaker 3 (10:43):
But it did make me and the whole reason I
want to mention this is it didn't make me wish
we could get this thing back in Houston because it's
been a while. It's been a while. I mean, Lance
Berkman was like the big the big one. It had
to be around then that that was the last it
again to me, it would be a cool thing to
(11:03):
get this thing back here and honor some of the legends,
get Bagloon Bigio out there and on the field and honored,
and then you know, get some current astros. I'd love
to see a healthy yord On Alvarez in the in
the home run Derby, would love to see future All
Star Cam Smith out there, you know, because yes, because
this would be a couple of years. You know, it'll
(11:24):
be a couple of years before Houston could even get it.
But anyway, just wanted to give you a little recap
of the All Star weekend where we did do some
baseball stuff and not a ton of booo.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
It's the only one I see on the schedule, by
the way, for the future.
Speaker 3 (11:36):
Okay, so the earliest they could get is twenty twenty seven, Yeah,
which was from people have talked to you that Wentz
said it was cool.
Speaker 1 (11:45):
Before that nineteen eighty six in the Dome and.
Speaker 3 (11:47):
That would have been astrodom. Yeah, so when you bring
it back to the Dome, yeah, they want to start
working on it. Probably passed by twenty twenty nine, but anyway,
it was cool and all that. But uh yeah, so
I will say though, when they introduced the three astros.
There was some booze, but not a ton, So I
think we're finally hopefully moving on.
Speaker 2 (12:09):
Nature is healing nature? Mean, it's just how two Van
and mccullor's left.
Speaker 3 (12:13):
Yeah, but but again, guilty by association. I heard one
guy say Hunter Brown's guilty because he pitches for a
team that did something in twenty seventeen, like get over it.
Speaker 2 (12:22):
My favorite was when Martin Maldonado got bull booed in
Angels Park and in seventeen he was an angel.
Speaker 4 (12:28):
Who was I talking to?
Speaker 3 (12:29):
I was talking to some medium members there and one
of the guys literally goes, yeah, dude, but but altuove
and the buzzers, and he was serious.
Speaker 4 (12:37):
And it still boggles my mind. But there are people
out there that really believed scrub.
Speaker 2 (12:42):
I didn't want to get angry in this podcast today, Gordy,
why would you do this?
Speaker 4 (12:45):
It's just because it still exists. It's still out there.
Speaker 2 (12:49):
People are idiots. God is stupid, so stupid. America is
dumber and dumber by the second.
Speaker 3 (12:57):
But anyways, because I was and I had to clarify,
this guy had to explained the whole thing to him,
and I had to tell him dude, ol two Ays
is the most class human being you will ever meet,
one of the nicest guys, does not want the limelight,
wants to give his teammates all the glory, yet he
is one of the best superstars in baseball. It's just
it's it's it's silly. And again, hopefully as time marches on,
(13:19):
we will get more and more clarity on what actually
transpired and our two Vey's name will be cleared and
he'll be honored for being one of the best of
all time.
Speaker 4 (13:27):
But as we stand ross, we're back into the thick
of things.
Speaker 3 (13:31):
As we're recording this ahead of Friday night's game in Seattle,
late night affairs. Next couple nights, we'll get a late
afternoon game on Sunday and then it's out to Arizona
for more late night games. But this is a big
series from a standpoint of it is a divisional series
in Seattle against the team that is chasing you in
the standings. And yes, the Astros went into the All
(13:51):
Star Break losers of the four or five, five and six.
I think, yeah, it was not pretty and so they
it would really like, look, even if you lose the series,
I'd like to win the night to just kind of
break up.
Speaker 2 (14:04):
The losing this you know, yeah, I mean, well you're
going up against Louis Castillo, but yeah, Brandon Walter has
been pretty good for the squad.
Speaker 1 (14:12):
And we'll get to the Hunter.
Speaker 2 (14:14):
Brown thing in a second that he's not pitching this
weekend for the Astros.
Speaker 1 (14:17):
But yes, important series. It is the middle of July.
Speaker 2 (14:21):
You know, some people are of course, you know how
I hate the must win thing that people go to.
So it's not a must win because it's July. You
got a couple of months, but it'd be really nice
to get a little bit more breathing room because of
the way that they went on the winning streak.
Speaker 1 (14:33):
You lost five out of six.
Speaker 2 (14:35):
You're going up into their building where you've had some
success and go out there and kind of, I don't
want to say completely stamp out the fire, but doabas
a little bit of water on them and trying to
make comeback. So at least winning the series, leaving there
with a six game cushion would feel pretty good. Then
headed to the Angels and I'm sorry not Angels Arizona.
(14:55):
Headed to Arizona, where you should be able to take
care of business there who they're not very good.
Speaker 3 (14:59):
Yeah, look, would love for them to win, to win
the take two out of three in Seattle, I would
just say, just don't get swept. If you win, wal
it's fine. Getting swept would put a little bit more
dire urgency. Are Hey, what are we doing here? But yeah,
I'm with you. When I saw the pitching matchups and
they said Brandon Walter Friday, Lance mccullors Junior Saturday, from
(15:20):
Er Sunday, I think we're all going Wait, so Hunter
Brown pitched last weekend. He didn't pitch in the All
Star Game because it was Tuesday and it was too
close to his last start, and yet he's gonna miss
this weekend. I translated it as maybe just a little
bit more rest for your All Star But how do
you see it?
Speaker 2 (15:37):
I think a couple of more days off for him.
I'm not really concerned that there's any sort of lingering
issue or I mean, maybe some fatigue, but you know,
not not an injury or anything like that. He has
been very good with Hunter Brown. The thing we also
have to remember is that he does not have the
track record that say from er Valdez does of going
(15:59):
seven eight nine, innings into games. He does have the
one complete game this year, but that was in eight
innings because it was a loss. So and throughout his
major league career, he's not a guy that's just been
racking up two hundred innings, so this is kind of
new territory for him. And the last couple of starts
were shaky for him to where he just looked like
he was having a little trouble with location. We had
(16:20):
Brian Bogosvic on the Matt Tom Show with Ross this week.
He was talking about how a little bit of fatigue
and factor into that with inconsistent release points, so a
few extra days for him get him right.
Speaker 4 (16:30):
I'm not really concerned.
Speaker 2 (16:32):
My concern level is closed to zero, and it would
be nice to have one of your best pitchers throwing
in this important series. But the Mariners themselves are resting
a lot of their type guy, top guys.
Speaker 1 (16:44):
They didn't reset their rotation either, so the Astros, as
we've seen them do for years.
Speaker 2 (16:50):
I know there are some of you who are really
freaked out about it, but you shouldn't be. The Astros
play the long game. A great reply from chandeler Rome
when he put the rotation out. October is way more
important than July, and that's the most succinct way to
put it. Yes, it'd be nice to win this series,
but you need Hunter Brown in October. You don't need
(17:11):
him this weekend. That's the most important thing. So a
couple extra days rest. I'm totally on board with it.
Speaker 3 (17:16):
Yeah, and this will be, you know, very much the
same thing when you get in a Rocket season when
you see two straight games where Kevin Durant is not playing, Yeah,
it will be very much.
Speaker 1 (17:24):
He played back to backs for Phoenix last year.
Speaker 4 (17:26):
So interesting. But anyway, but just point larger point, you're
the Astros.
Speaker 3 (17:31):
You should absolutely as a fan put yourself in the
mindset as well. This team is worried about games in
late September into October. I guess really it starts in
October now. It used to be, Uh, October games are
what matters. Games in the middle of July you will
not remember. And it's funny because somebody preached that to
me when I had a crazy take last year, and
(17:52):
I went back and looked and went, yeah, they were
these weird you know.
Speaker 4 (17:56):
It's just funny.
Speaker 3 (17:57):
It's like they have these games in the middle of
the season that they don't mean crap by the end
of the season. So yeah, it's interesting that we talked
about the pitching, and you know you mentioned Seattle who
they're pitching. So this brings me back to when we
last left friends. We saw a very sugar Land Space
Cowboys lineup Fortier Astros and so health is where we
(18:19):
are now, and it doesn't sound like ross any of
these anybody on the IL currently for the Astros is
going to be back this weekend.
Speaker 1 (18:27):
No, and that's just gonna be.
Speaker 2 (18:30):
I mean, the way that you've been winning a lot
this year has been with the pitching. Of course, you
have been getting some good, timely hitting, and the offense
has gotten a lot better from where it was at
the start of the season. But it's gonna have to
be the pitching, and then it's gonna have to be
this stray. You know, you got a random three run
homer from Tremeel, you got to walk off from Zach Short.
It's gonna be We don't need all three of these
guys to show up, but you need a couple of
(18:52):
hits from one or two of them. Josel Twuovey has
been swinging a hot bat, so that's good esuk Paratus
continues to be in the lineup unfortunately, I mean, Painia
is still up, but I imagine he'll be back.
Speaker 1 (19:02):
Hopefully within the next couple of weeks.
Speaker 2 (19:04):
And those guys who have been carrying the offense for
you have to continue to do that. And then you
need to see the periodic flashes from Christian Walker and
Yaner Diaz.
Speaker 3 (19:17):
Yeah, so just a quick injury report. If I had
the theme to er or doogie howser, we would play
that right here. But basically, data Brown breath. Data Brown
said last Sunday Jeremy Pinya would not be activated for
the first game of the second half of the season,
but that his return shouldn't be far off. So again,
(19:41):
translate that how you will. I'm gonna say if and
say he's not gonna be back Saturday or Sunday either,
but maybe at earliest in Arizona Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. Are
we thinking maybe back home next Thursday against the A's.
This thing is wide open, folks. I'm just telling you
what I feel. My intuition is probably not back this weekend,
(20:01):
maybe sometime next week.
Speaker 2 (20:02):
I'd rather not even speculate, because I mean Dana Brown. Unfortunately,
he is ever the optimist. Yeah, and that's a good
quality to have, I think. But he's also speaking in
front of microphones and on and he's very optimistic about
injuries and a lot of times a little overly optimist.
Speaker 3 (20:19):
Joe a spot as well, though, Okay, because when you
asked Joe, hey, how's your on doing? He's doing good.
He's doing good, Like that's always how he starts. And
it's like, no, he's not doing well. Tell me, tell me,
you know what. He still doesn't picked up broken, he
still doesn't picked up about We'll see, Like that's the answer.
You don't say he's doing well. He's not doing well, clearly,
But I digress. But that is uh so Pania would
(20:40):
be the first to come back, is kind of what
they intimated. He's next man up. Then you have Jake Myers.
We did a clarity on that. Dana Brown said, with
his calf injury, he will be out quote at the
very minimum three plus weeks.
Speaker 2 (20:54):
Yes, three plus weeks. Oh yeah, so that's a month
at least. I would say probably, I'm gonna say six weeks.
We can start looking seriously, so you're going double with yeah, exactly.
You know, Data says the day, it's two days. When
Dana says, absolutely, you got to go on data time.
Data time is a little bit different than everybody else.
I like that, So I'm dead serious. Unfortunately, because Jake
(21:16):
Myers again, you man, these injuries, it's just the hits
just keep coming with this stuff, man, And he's been
having such a great season. He's so good in the field.
And then of course, as we've kind of been talking about,
how does that what does that mean for the trade
deadline and how aggressive Dana Brown.
Speaker 1 (21:33):
Is gonna be.
Speaker 2 (21:34):
But yeah, you get those guys back eventually, and thankfully
you do have the five win cushions, So maybe that
even gives that a little bit more importance this weekend
to try to keep the Seattle Mariners at arms length.
Speaker 4 (21:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (21:45):
The other one, Jacob Melton, he recently transitioned his rehab
program to the facility of Florida, So there's a bunch
of guys that are out in Florida now.
Speaker 1 (21:53):
That have to them in Florida Complex.
Speaker 3 (21:54):
The other one came out the other Chas McCormick. He
was down in Triple A sugar Land getting ready for
reaps start and then suddenly they just decided, no, let's
send him back out to Florida. So you wonder did
he have a setback or something, you know, did something
happen there. But I also look at it this way, Ross,
I kinda we kind of know what Chazz is now.
I'd almost rather keep taking a shot on Trammel and
(22:17):
Cooper Humble and somebody's like, let's just give them a
couple more games to see what they can do instead of,
oh my god, we need to rush Chaz McCormick back.
Speaker 4 (22:26):
No we don't. It's not like he was ripping the
cover off the ball.
Speaker 1 (22:30):
So it'd be nice to have Chazz, though, I'd rather
have Chazz than Cooper Humble.
Speaker 3 (22:34):
The update on your on Alvarez that he will be
reevaluated Thursday, so that was yesterday and could be cleared
to start swinging a bat. So we will get some
transparency hopefully on this tonight when Joe Spottas speaks part
tonight's game. Just the rest on in on pitching injuries
JP France through a live batting practice session last week,
(22:54):
Spencer Raghetti could be ready to begin a rehab assignment
in about a week or a week and a half.
Speaker 4 (23:00):
That's good. So you're thinking two weeks, yeah, the whole
the time.
Speaker 3 (23:05):
Christian Hovey are begin to rehab assignment in the Florida
Complex League.
Speaker 4 (23:08):
So that's good, that's great.
Speaker 3 (23:09):
Brendan Rodgers has resumed hitting, running, and throwing while in Florida.
Sean Dubin has resumed throwing from flat ground in Florida.
And I think we said to Zenzo, right, so.
Speaker 1 (23:20):
You know it's going to be interesting with all this too.
Speaker 2 (23:22):
How many guys you had to put on the forty
man with all these interests, and how you're going to clear.
Speaker 4 (23:27):
Those spots back.
Speaker 3 (23:28):
I mean, well, I think the easy answer is you
say goodbye to a Cooper Hummel, you say goodbye to
a Taylor Trammel, you say goodbye to I mean the pitching.
Speaker 1 (23:36):
The bullpen's been so good, even Brendan Rodgers.
Speaker 4 (23:39):
Yes, oh absolutely.
Speaker 3 (23:41):
But I'm just thinking, like, you're not booting anybody from
this pitching staff right now. I mean I guess you
could theoretically, yeah, like you would have.
Speaker 1 (23:48):
To Nick Hernandez.
Speaker 4 (23:50):
Yeah, yeah, he'd be next to line to go.
Speaker 2 (23:54):
I don't know, I'm just saying it because you you
had to pile so many guys into the forty man
be interesting putting guys back off.
Speaker 4 (24:02):
One other one. Luis Garcia struck out four.
Speaker 1 (24:05):
As sixty guy guys who are sixty.
Speaker 3 (24:07):
And allowed a running a hit, no walks over two
innings in a rehab start in the Florida Complex. Like,
so if Luis Garcia is doing that, you gotta be
think thinking in a couple of weeks he might be
ready to go to double A or triple it. Like
in other words, start a spring training basically go to
go to corpus, mister, make a couple starts there. But
like maybe you're looking at I mean, I know we're
closing in August. Maybe like back into of August, Louis
(24:28):
Garcia's back with arraghetti with I mean, this pitching staff
could get healthy at the right time. So I don't know,
we'll see, but fingers crossed on all those.
Speaker 2 (24:38):
I'll tell you that, just a gut feeling, I don't
think we're going to see a move for a starting
pitcher because of everything the usual laid out.
Speaker 3 (24:45):
Sure, now here's but here's the other part. WEX brought
this up too. They're gonna use that line about it's
like getting a mid season acquisition.
Speaker 4 (24:53):
That's the GM go to.
Speaker 3 (24:54):
Well, Wex brought this up. We don't know what condition
those guys are in. Getting Spitzer get back on paper
is great, but you're thinking of it as we're getting
Spencer or Getty coming out of spring training ready to
go that level Spencer and not Spencer's been hadn't been
pitching for months, and we don't know how good he is,
may not have his best control of his best stuff.
(25:15):
That's where making a trade for a guy who has
been going through a season healthy and is in the
thick of his prime and very good, you know, that
would be a more plus from the unknown you're getting
from the guys that are injured.
Speaker 4 (25:26):
Yeah, but the good news is you've got so many options.
You know.
Speaker 2 (25:28):
It's like it's like Doherty when you were you were
on campus at LSU. It's a shotgun approach. You get
three numbers. One of them is probably gonna work out,
one's gonna ghost you, one's gonna turn out to be crazy,
but one of them is probably gonna work out.
Speaker 4 (25:39):
Or all three R phonies you're screwed. So you don't
need all three phonies.
Speaker 1 (25:44):
However, I think at least one or two of them
will work out.
Speaker 4 (25:48):
Yeah, and track record.
Speaker 3 (25:49):
I mean to me, if Christian Havier is able to
get back this season, that dude is, look, you give
him a big fat contract because he has thrown no
hitters in the World Series like he was awesome, so
I expect him to get back. Louis Garcia is the
one that remember Ross even when last time he was healthy.
Speaker 4 (26:05):
He wasn't really going more than like five innings.
Speaker 3 (26:08):
So it's not like you're expecting Luis Garci like he
might come in and just be a multi inting long
relief guy for Yeah.
Speaker 2 (26:14):
That's the thing too, the guys that we're talking about,
JP Franz and Louis Garci. I have low expectations for
Christian Haavier a little bit higher, but also, you.
Speaker 4 (26:21):
Know, Evergetty is expected to slide right back.
Speaker 2 (26:24):
I want to slide in, and of course we don't
have a huge major league track record for him, but
I think he can step right in and be the
three games what I'm hoping.
Speaker 3 (26:31):
Nobody works harder than that dude. I mean the research
and studying and all that. He's he's a nerd when
it comes to that stuff. Last thing, let's talk about
We don't have the lineup for tonight as of yet
as of this recording, but just kind of looking back
on last Sunday's lineup against the Rangers.
Speaker 4 (26:47):
What's wrong? Yeah? Good? No?
Speaker 3 (26:48):
Is she gonna read the estac Paradus Leading off? You
had Cam Smith betting two hole cool? Yeah, Christian or
jose L Twov betting, third, Christian Walker, fourth, Victor Carrotty five?
Is that what you maybe expects in there? But he's
off that Sunday, So that's fine.
Speaker 2 (27:08):
Give him a little extra time, I think, get him
off his feet. He's had some bad batted ball luck
as well, has yannard as this season actually.
Speaker 3 (27:15):
But I think he'll be He'll be behind home played right, Yeah,
I think so? And what Kerotine dh Yeah or maybe.
Speaker 1 (27:21):
Even well no, not first if Christian Walker of course.
Speaker 2 (27:24):
Is but yeah, either either or one of those guys,
depending on whoever they want Brandon Walter to work with.
So yeah, that's a top that that's that. That's not
a bad top six. You can score some runs with that.
And if Brandon Walter can be good, like I said,
you just need a couple of those guys in the back,
one or two clutch hits at times from those guys
(27:48):
to get enough runs, to get a good enough start,
get to the great bullpen and win some games, like
you know, five to three.
Speaker 3 (27:56):
Would you run Bryce Matthews out there in an important
series against.
Speaker 2 (28:00):
Seattle if you have to, you have to. He's obviously unfortunate.
I feel bad for him. He wasn't ready, but they
needed a body. He's overmatched right now. We knew that
the whiff rates were bad in Triple A and the
overall numbers were decent, but a lot of that was
buoyed by the road numbers in the PCL, but adds
(28:23):
up to Joe Aspata. But I would put him out there,
I guess, just kind of see if you can get
some kind of little spark out of him.
Speaker 3 (28:30):
And I guess the rest of the crew Cooper Hommel,
Zach Short and Taylor Taylor Tremmel. We're expecting some combination
of those guys.
Speaker 1 (28:37):
Get like three hits out of those three guys.
Speaker 2 (28:39):
It would be the worst thing to ask for, right Yeah, somebody,
somebody can go three and the other guys can go over.
Speaker 3 (28:44):
I I just it's to me, and I know it's
a it's a thing in the past. But small ball,
I think when you have guys like this up here,
I think you changed your philosophy. Say, top of the order, guys,
all swing away. Guys in the bottom of the order,
try to get on for those guys coming back around
to the town of the order.
Speaker 4 (29:00):
Get a guy out, work a walk, bottom.
Speaker 3 (29:02):
Over, steal a base, do whatever you can do to
get some traffic and some thing's moving for the top
of the order. That's just my opinion. Again, that's the
lost art and baseball. We don't do it anymore. No,
we just tell everybody swing for the fences.
Speaker 1 (29:14):
The fences, and Taylor tramall can put one in there.
Speaker 2 (29:16):
Well, not Seeattle's gonna be a little more difficult, but yes,
he did put one in the Crawford boxes at least
all right.
Speaker 3 (29:21):
So in closing, Rosses wrap up here and again make
sure you guys stock up a plenty of Crawford box
from Carbock Brewing as you head into the winter weekend.
Speaker 4 (29:28):
We'll be back out of Carbock real soon.
Speaker 3 (29:30):
We were out there a couple times in the last
month and did a show out there at the Pizza
and Pints and yeah, great great spot out there.
Speaker 4 (29:37):
I've notice is too Ross.
Speaker 3 (29:38):
Look, the weather's hot this time of year, but days
going out there to car Bock it's not oppressively hot yet.
It's that's coming August and the start of September gets
oppressively hot. Yeah, but you sit under those shade, under
those umbrellas, or under the patio with the fans on you,
it's not so bad.
Speaker 4 (29:57):
And shorts. So let's say and go out there in
a full sid suit.
Speaker 3 (30:00):
But anyway, get out to Carbock Brewing if you can.
Some great events going on there all the time, and
of course they are doing some great things, raise some
money for flood really victims in the Hill country, and
they even have a deal going on right now. They
have a special Aedish T shirt you can get if
you donate at their website. Just like you know, google
(30:21):
Carbock Burring and it'll take you to the link. Prediction time,
What do you think the astros do this weekend? Going
Walter mccullors and Valdez And by the way, I think
Dan brought it up.
Speaker 4 (30:33):
Lights mccullors on the road this year excellent has been
lights out.
Speaker 1 (30:38):
Yeah, so I'll go two.
Speaker 2 (30:39):
Out of three because Mariners aren't throwing all their tough
guys either, So two out of three for the Strows
and then that would be like very Astros of them
to lose a series to Arizona right after that. But
I'm gonna go they show up for the big games.
Josel two is gonna get booed, have a couple of
big hits, and I'll go two out of three for
the Strows.
Speaker 3 (30:55):
I'll go two out of three as well. But this
is where I get like, this is where baseball baseball.
Speaker 4 (30:59):
Sometimes.
Speaker 3 (31:00):
I bet they win the games with Walter and mccullors
and lose the fumber that because it always goes the
opposite of what you're thinking. So I don't know, but
part of me wanted to say they're going to lose
two out of three just because Seattle is going to
be motivated. But watching Seattle, I mean, look, they've won,
they won three to row coming into the break. They've
just been so inconsistent so many times. It's decent pitching,
(31:23):
they can't score runs at times. So look, the Astros
have their problems too, But I think the Astros pitching,
particularly the bullpen, which has been so damn good, we'll
win them two of these games.
Speaker 1 (31:35):
Yeah, I think so, too, maybe hopefully cal rally cools.
Speaker 3 (31:38):
Off they have it. That is an all new edition
of the Crawford Box Cast. We went pretty long today.
It was over thirty minutes, so appreciate you guys for
listen listening. Remember to subscribe wherever you get your podcast
