Speaker 1 (00:00):
It is an all new edition of the Crawford Box
Cast presented by Carboch Brewing and the Crawford Bach. And
a good night back at dyk In Park for the
Astros is. I'm sure plenty of people were enjoying an
ice cool Crawford Bach in those tequila sunrice dripe cans
over there at dyke In Park. As you enjoy the
sweet taste of the Crawford Bach, means even more when

(00:22):
you enjoy it with an Astros victory. Chris Gordy here
along with Ross Vireal is Ross the Astros Man. What
a difference a couple of hours makes. We were both
on the radio earlier in the day on Thursday talking
about man two game losing streak against the Tampa Bay Rays,
the offense not showing up, pitching, concerns with injuries and

(00:42):
all this, and Man, a few hours later, the Astros
take it to the Seattle Mariners, nine to two. We
got Al two Vey breaking out, we got Lance mccullors
continuing to approve.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
What a win for the Astros.

Speaker 3 (00:56):
Yeah, very nice. It reminds me of that meme.

Speaker 4 (00:58):
It's like Tony Soprano and it's She's like Yesterday you
said it's over.

Speaker 3 (01:01):
Today you say we're back. What changed?

Speaker 4 (01:04):
Yeah, you lose that series. You got a Hunter Brown
on the mound in a rubber game. Dude's giving up
home runs like crazy balls flying out of that bandbox
in Steinbrenner Field. That was a real downer. Then you
come into today, and honestly, I'm gonna be real with you,
my optimism was low. Lance mccullor's junior has been somewhat shaky.
George Kirby has absolutely torched the Astros in his major

(01:27):
league career. Even though it was his first start of
the major league season this year, I wasn't feeling great
about it. And then Lance mccullor's junior starts off with
that four pitch walk to JP Crawford with everything way
out of the zone.

Speaker 3 (01:40):
I'm like, oh boy, here we go.

Speaker 4 (01:43):
But hey, lancemick cullors junior settles in eight strikeouts. You
get to Kirby in the third and fourth, and we're
talking about a nine to two victory and Jose Altuve
with a couple of home runs.

Speaker 3 (01:53):
Let's go.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
Yeah, it's funny.

Speaker 1 (01:55):
I was almost I was going to pull the audio
to clip because we had Dana Brown on on a
filled in for Sewn Salisbury on Thursday, and we had
Dana Brown on in the morning and I said to Dana,
I said, Dana, this is a big star for a
Lance mccullors tonight, because you know, you wanted to build
off of his last good outing against the Rangers.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
And I said, man, if you could just get.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
Him to like five innings two runs tonight, that'ud be awesome.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
And ross.

Speaker 1 (02:21):
When he took the field in the fifth inning and
he'd only given up two runs and he gets the
first out, I'm like, oh my god, he is gonna
So I was getting ready to pull the clip and
then he gives up base hit and then base hit
and I was like, ah, they said the spot is
going out there.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
I'm like, don't pull him, Joe, let him work out
of this.

Speaker 1 (02:37):
But I get it. That was the tying run at
the plate. They had to make a change and it
ended up working out, but a good encouraging outing for mcclors.
I wanted more. He was at ninety one pitches. He
even said after the game, you know I had more
left in the tank.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
But I get it. They're just being there being overly
precautious with.

Speaker 1 (02:55):
Him right now. They don't want to, you know, ruin
that confidence. But another out from him, and again, eventually
he's gonna have to get to those five innings because
you know, push him to five or six. But so far,
so good, and that Ara is starting to come down
from the tobacco against the Reds a couple of weeks ago.

Speaker 4 (03:14):
Yeah, you almost got your five innings because even if
you look at he got, he got to two strikes
on Randy cal Rally and then he got the two
strikes on Randy a Rose Arena. But credit to both
of them for getting hits and pulling it out there.
But it was pretty close. And the thing is, yeah,
we need more innings for sure, But you look at
the pitches. He threw ninety one pitches. In theory, if

(03:36):
he can be a little bit more efficient not to
allow as much traffic on the base pass, especially with
the with the walks three walks that he allowed, ninety
one pitches should be able to get you, hopefully five
six innings. So he's just got to throw more strikes,
just fifty two strikes today. So he also said, as
you mentioned after the game, that he's feeling good, he's

(03:57):
got more in the tank, his body feels great, all
positive signs there. So if he can just kind of
put it all together and knowing to an extent that
this is kind of who he is is a guy
who's gonna have a bunch of strikeouts, walk a bunch
of guys walking to get into some jams, and then
get out of those jams and run up high pitch counts. Yeah,

(04:18):
just a turn up the efficiency a couple of notches,
and we're talking about somebody that can be very helpful
and productive for a team that is in desperate need
of starting pitching with all these injuries.

Speaker 3 (04:29):
Pilot up.

Speaker 1 (04:30):
Yeah, you want to know why I really wanted the
callers to get the extra two outs and get through five.
He would have factored into the decision. He would have gotten, Yes,
a win. His last win ross It was September twenty first,
twenty twenty two, the last time he took a w
in a decision. So I just looked it up. The

(04:51):
number one song in the country at that time was
Lizzo About Damn Time.

Speaker 3 (04:55):
And she's been canceled twice since then, I think.

Speaker 1 (04:58):
And the number one movie was Top Gun Mat At
the box office. So I always like to do this
date in history. I mean it's been a while, man,
it's been a while.

Speaker 4 (05:06):
So that long ago, I mean top Gun Maverick was
sweeping the country.

Speaker 1 (05:11):
I mean Tom Cruise already made another mission impossible since then.
But I will say, I mean, look again, mcculler's continue
to build the eight strikeouts was good against a by
the way, a Mariners team that had been heating up
like their bats had really come along here these last
couple of weeks, so that, you know, that was pretty
good to manage them. But I will make a prediction

(05:32):
Ross Lance, McCullers will get that first win of twenty
twenty five here very soon. So we will see. But
that was encouraging because Ross also on the flip side,
you know, we find out about Ronald Blanco the other
day that you know, he flies back to Houston having
elbow soreness. Dana Brown and the team announced to the
IL he saw doctors, you know, and now he's getting

(05:56):
a second opinion. They still have not come out and
straight up said he's done of the year and it's
Tommy John or whatever.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
But still kind of looks that way, right.

Speaker 4 (06:06):
Yeah, I think if you hear elbow inflammation, and you
hear second opinion. Nobody ever gets the first, great, great opinion,
and nobody ever goes to the doctor he says, hey,
you're doing great, and he's like, all right, you know what,
I need a second opinion. So sounds like that's where
it's trending. Of course, what four or five days ago, now,
at this point, Hayden was an esky with the Tommy
John surgery. You've got Christian, Christian Javier and Luis Garcia

(06:27):
recovering from Tommy John surgery. This this is just uh
And on one end, one hand you say, it feels
like it's just a run of bad luck. But on
the other hand, it's like this is just league wide,
all these these pitching injuries that pile up everywhere.

Speaker 1 (06:42):
Yeah, and you know, people wondering, is it the pitch clock,
is it the pace of play?

Speaker 2 (06:47):
Is that why? You know?

Speaker 1 (06:48):
Guys are going out there and just throwing as hard
as they can and it's throwing their arms out, whatever
it is, combination. This has been an epidemic.

Speaker 2 (06:56):
Man.

Speaker 1 (06:57):
I mean even Justin Verlander had Tommy John that you know,
when he was an astro and mccullor's has had it,
and it feels like almost everybody on the staff has
had a turn at at having a Tommy John surgery
at this point.

Speaker 4 (07:08):
Yeah, it's like when you're a kid in a you
get everyone in chicken pox just to get out of
the way.

Speaker 1 (07:13):
Yeah, But nonetheless, you know, we'll see what happens. We'll
we'll cross our fingers and hope for the best. But
it doesn't seem like it's gonna be very good news
on Renel Blanco. So that even more magnifies why mccullors
needs to continue to get better and extend his outings,
because if he's gonna be the number three guy in
this rotation moving forward, he's got to get through, you know,

(07:34):
at least five, if not into the sixth inning and
some of these starts here soon. So again, good good
foundation to build off of, and you know they're gonna
have to lean on guys like Ryan Gusto and Colton Gordon.
I mean, they're gonna have to play bigger roles now
that down the stretch of this season.

Speaker 5 (07:52):
Yeah, Colton Gordon was the corresponding move with Renel Blanco
going to the fifteen day e Il he's in line
to start Sunday and he was.

Speaker 4 (08:02):
Good the last time out, and we'll see what happens
from there. But it's it's gonna be tough because you know,
we talked about this in spring training about the lack
of pitching depth and and kind of not curious because
we know that the Ashos are trying desperately to stay
under the luxury tax threshold. But you're playing a dangerous
game in this day and age. As we just mentioned,

(08:23):
this is not new that the ash that the that
the their rash of pitching injuries all throughout the major leagues.
It's something that it's not basically an if is gonna happen.
It's a winner. Are you gonna get beset by pitching injuries?
So now they got dipped into some of their depth.
You know, we're gonna see is it gonna be aj
blue ball, Is it gonna be how much of it it's
gonna be Colton Gordon, how much of Ryan Gusto? Can

(08:45):
Spencer Eric Getty get back soon? We heard that he
finally had his cast off. He's gripping a baseball, but
he's not throwing one. And Dana Brown saying on the
Sean Salisbury show with you guys that he's going to
have to basically go through a full spring training. So
we're on we're in towards the end of May, so
then we're probably talking about July at this point. So yeah,

(09:06):
it's it's tough. It's gonna be tough going and you
you're wondering how if it's gonna wear on this bullpen
as well.

Speaker 2 (09:13):
Yeah, well, and it's interesting.

Speaker 1 (09:15):
I mean, you say it's you can never have enough pitching,
but you know, let's just let's play the complete optimist here.
Let's say Hunter Brown from bar Valdez keep doing their thing.
Let's say mccaullor settles in, you know, the post All
Star break. There could be a world where you get
back Spencer Arraghetti and possibly even JP France and Luis Garcia,
and suddenly you have excess pitching. Suddenly you have too

(09:37):
much pitching. And that's with the loss of west Nesky
and presumably run out Blanco. So again, well across that
bridge when we get there. But my god, Ross, it's
it's it's third week of May, like, we have so
much of the season still to go through, and you're
talking mccullor's Gusto Gordon as you're three four five like

(09:58):
it is, I mean, any more banged up arms in
this rotation, and they're gonna have to make a move,
like you're gonna have to make a trade. As much
as we want to believe aj Blue Baw and Gordon
and Gusto could be the answers, like you just almost
have to go get a veteran to eat up some
innings for you.

Speaker 2 (10:15):
You know.

Speaker 1 (10:17):
That's that's kind of what what the dog days of
summer becomes. You just need somebody to eat up innings.
So I don't know, are you Are you confident that
they're gonna that Arragetty's gonna come back post All Star
Break and possibly one of those other ones in Guarcian
and France.

Speaker 3 (10:34):
Oh sorry, I was just looking up Justin Verlander's numbers.
Trade for him again? Yeah, well just kidding.

Speaker 1 (10:41):
Did you see the news on him he went to
the I l oh, yeah it uh it was peck
peck discomfort.

Speaker 2 (10:52):
You ever had peck discomfort?

Speaker 4 (10:55):
I have peck peck discomfort on a daily basis. Okay,
well that doesn't sound good. I was just kidding, By
the way, just be fun if they traded for him
again because they were low on pitching, but also.

Speaker 1 (11:05):
A quick stout of Erlander. He has made ten starts
for the Giants, has he have to record a win? So, uh,
now he's pitched getting to three hundred, Well, he's pitched decently.
He's that gone to your around four four thirty or something.
But but he he's getting the Oswalt roy Oswald treatment.
It's like he he he gives them six and six
innings and two runs and they lose two to one.

(11:25):
You know, it's like, guys, I'm doing everything I can here,
give me some run support.

Speaker 4 (11:30):
Yeah, poor guy desperately wanted to be the last guy
to get to three hundred wins. At least he can
probably be the last guy to get to two fifty
and take some solace in that. But yeah, rag Getty
comes back. Hopefully he can be good and just stay healthy.
And he's also a young arm and you never know
what's gonna happen there. But as far as I'm keeping low,
I thought the last we'd heard on JP France was

(11:51):
like September.

Speaker 3 (11:52):
You heard something perhaps a little bit.

Speaker 4 (11:54):
Earlier for him, And I mean, by the way, it's
not like he lit the world on fire the last
time he was out there for the ash.

Speaker 1 (12:00):
Right, he's just another arm. But you know that that
I was told, But that was back during spring training,
they said, during post All Star breaks.

Speaker 2 (12:08):
So I don't know.

Speaker 1 (12:09):
I mean, you're probably right. I mean, shoot, somebody told me,
you know, at spring training, don't expect Christian Hovey are
back in all this year. Then somebody said, I don't know,
maybe September if he gets back on track. I'm like, so,
I don't know. I mean, we never know what these guys.
You know, I think it's more likely, you know, Sean
Dubin could could be moved back to as a starter
and maybe try to squeeze some starts out of him,

(12:31):
if you know, over somebody like France or somebody coming back.
So they have options. But I just don't want to
lean on ross for this team that fancies himself a
playoff team. I can't lean on so many inexperienced arms
to try to get there.

Speaker 2 (12:45):
You know, it's it's fine you have one or.

Speaker 1 (12:47):
Two guys making their you know, you know, season debuts
or big league debuts in one season. But I mean
if you're lean on more than two, three, three, or
even four guys. It's just it's too many. So we
shall see. I've already seen the tweets Ross. People are
asking for Trevor Bauer again.

Speaker 4 (13:08):
Oh gosh, please don't make me play the audio we
have on the Matt Thomas Show with rosswords. It's not happening.
It's never happening. I thought he was getting sheld in
career or something like that.

Speaker 1 (13:20):
By the way, I listened to your postgame show on
Thursday night and I loved your h the My favorite
is the old man caller that sees something and a
guy swing and just feels, you know, He's like, I
see something at Christian Walker swing man he needs to fix.
I'm like, thanks, man, I will go to the clubhouse
tomorrow and I will bring that to his attention. It's crazy,
all these paid coaches all around, these professional, paid coaches,

(13:43):
and nobody saw the hitch in his giddy up. Thank
you Joe for sitting on your couch and bring that
to his attention.

Speaker 3 (13:50):
Yeah, we we do appreciate that.

Speaker 4 (13:52):
By the way, it looks like our good friend Trevor
Bauer is playing for the Yokohama Bay Stars and he's
got a three ninety three Era there just FYI you
know what they say about them, right, they're unstoppable.

Speaker 1 (14:07):
No nothing, I don't know anything about that team, so
uh yeah, I think that's where he will stay. There
were plenty of chances for him to get a second
opportunity and nobody bit so it almost feels like one
of those almost put him in the Kaepernick territory of
just untouchable. No teams are gonna sign them so obviously
for different reasons, but just putting that out there, all right,

(14:29):
let's transition to the offense. Ross I bought Jose Altuve
breaking out of his phone with not one but two
home runs and that average goes from two thirty eight
to two forty three that quickly.

Speaker 2 (14:44):
Altuve four ribies on Thursday night.

Speaker 4 (14:48):
Yeah, huge, huge decy and big swings to the Crawford boxes.
It wasn't like, you know, cheap e's or anything like that.
Like it was really really encouraging to see. And I
don't know how much you look at at bat speed metrics,
but his bat speed has been down this year. But
both of them seventy five miles an hour above are
are considered fast swings. It was like seventy nine and

(15:11):
eighty two miles an hour, So that really kind of
was eye popping to me to see those high of
numbers as far as the bat speed in the game
from him, the two of the three fastest swings in
the entire game, and home runs in twenty seven to
thirty parks twenty nine to thirty parks, so great swings there.
Love to see that from Hoseel two eight much needed.

(15:33):
He was like three for his last thirty one, had
not had a home run like eighty eight bats, so
I think what was it was at April twenty eighth,
something like that, So it was a huge drought.

Speaker 3 (15:42):
You need him. You're gonna need him.

Speaker 4 (15:43):
Look if this is if we're talking about them and
they're one game of I'm sorry now two games above
five hundred and we're talking about winning the American League West,
making a wildcard. Whatever, You're gonna need Hoseel Twove to
be a part of this offense, especially with the state
of the pitching right now, so.

Speaker 3 (15:58):
Very very very encouraging.

Speaker 4 (16:00):
What year is it, LANCEM cullors Junior gets a start
and you win and josel Twove hits two home runs.

Speaker 1 (16:07):
Yeah, L two ve it was his twelfth career multi
homer game. His last one was April of last year,
so something he hadn't done in over a year.

Speaker 2 (16:16):
And you mentioned he went.

Speaker 1 (16:17):
He's gone almost a full month without a home run,
so that was good to see.

Speaker 2 (16:21):
And that gives.

Speaker 1 (16:22):
A twenty one career regular season homers against Seattle Ross.
That now gives him twenty plus career homers against every
al WES team. So pretty cool stuff there for for
L two A two. Yeah, I mean it's you know,
for the longest it was, Oh, he's the Yankees daddy.
He's the daddy of everybody in the American League West now,
so that's a cool note there. But I wanted to

(16:44):
give some love two Ross. How about Jeremy Payne. You
I mean to me, he continues to be this team's MVP.
With the season he's having, still batting right at about
three hundred, him in that leadoff spot is just it's
led to so much success. But the big two RBI
hit tonight, driving in two runs and his five hundredth
career hit.

Speaker 2 (17:03):
How about that?

Speaker 4 (17:06):
Yeah, five hundred career hit for him, that's great. I
think I saw some list of like short stops. It
was kind of it was.

Speaker 2 (17:12):
I think it was.

Speaker 3 (17:13):
It was in the Astros game notes.

Speaker 1 (17:14):
I maybe fifth player in AS history to collect five
hundred hits is a shortstop, joining Roger, Roger Metzger, Carlos Correa,
Craig Craig Reynolds, and Adam Everett, and he leads leads
the Astros ranked tied for second the Majors. Was seven
hit by a pitch as well. So he's he's got

(17:36):
the Craig Vizio thing down. He's getting hit in that
leadout spot.

Speaker 4 (17:41):
Yeah, that's fine, Like you want to get hits and
get hit You're hitting triples, got a lot of a
lot of hard hit contact, hitting around three hundred, having
his breakout offensive season, playing great steady handed shortstop. I'm
I'm all on board for this Jeremy Pina All Star
run he's trying to go on.

Speaker 1 (17:58):
Also, want to give some love to Maurice You do Bond?
He has come on. He had two hits, scored two runs,
drove in a run on Thursday. Do Bond batting three
forty eight in the month of May. How about that?

Speaker 3 (18:09):
Wow, he's coming for the batting title. Baby, Let's go
that ninth spot. Whatever it is. The whoever's in the ninth.

Speaker 4 (18:15):
Spot seems to be producing whatever was Sometimes it's Cam Smith,
Jake Myers, Mauricio Dubon. I don't know what kind of
magic is happening in that ninth spot this year, but
it's really working for the strows. So good on Joe's
Botta for getting Jeremy Painey up in that leadoff spot
where he's been producing and knocking in some runs which
you don't normally see a bunch in the in the
leadoff spot.

Speaker 1 (18:34):
Yeah, just a few more here on the hitters, do
bond That was his fourth fourth multi hit game in
his last six starts, so he that bat is swinging
the hot bat, the torpedo bat, Victor Kartini. He went
three for four with an RBI. That was his thirteenth
career game with three or more hits, his second this season.

(18:54):
And just a quick note on on mccullors. You know,
his strikeouts and innings pitch were both season high. Retired
nine of his last twelve batters he faced in the outing,
So a lot of positives. And here's where we kind
of look ahead ross at the rest of this schedule
with the Seattle Mariners. It is a four games.

Speaker 2 (19:14):
Set, and the good news is the Ashers have played
well at home.

Speaker 1 (19:18):
I mean they've the last I don't know, five or
six series, they've either won the series or split the series.
So I'm not gonna be greedy here. I'm just asking
for a split. And so all that means is win
one of the next three. I mean that's pretty realistic
to say, just win one of these next three. You
come out of this series, no harm, no foul, You

(19:38):
gain no ground, but you lose no ground on Seattle.

Speaker 2 (19:41):
If you can take three out of four, awesome.

Speaker 1 (19:43):
But I feel like that's getting greedy, knowing that Ryan
Gusto's heading to the Mount on Friday and Colton Gordon's
head of the Mount on Sunday. But I will say,
I mean we'll see Emerson Hancock has not been lights
out this year, and that's who's going for the Mariners
on Friday. So maybe an opportunity, but I think we
can't get greedy here.

Speaker 4 (20:05):
Man listening Hancock? Yeah No, By the way, we hadn't
mentioned Julio Rodriguez scratched before this game with some back dynists.
We'll see, not like he's been crazy good for them,
but he has had some runs where he's crushed the
Astros and he can get hot in a hurry, so
we'll see. He also plays great center field. See how
long he's going to be out. If he's going to
be missing time, don't want anybody to be.

Speaker 1 (20:26):
Hurt, and recommend he take the weekend off.

Speaker 2 (20:29):
I mean, just.

Speaker 3 (20:32):
Exactly tight back.

Speaker 4 (20:33):
Why don't you go ahead and sit this one out,
Julio Rodriguez, that'd be great, so that that obviously will
help not having him at the top of the Mariners lineup.
Like I said, he can get hot in a hurry.
Uh yeah, I say get greedy and go for the
series win. Now that you've taken one, you try to
win frommer. Start and split one of the Colton Gordon,
Ryan Gusto starts.

Speaker 2 (20:51):
Let's go baby, I will say too.

Speaker 1 (20:54):
I mean, George Kirby, didn't he have really good historical
numbers against the Astros.

Speaker 2 (20:59):
It was good too.

Speaker 4 (21:00):
Devin starts one era and that's not including that's not
including the seven shutout in the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (21:07):
Wow.

Speaker 1 (21:07):
So to get five runs off of him and chase
him in the fourth inning. I know it was his
first outing of the season, but that was big on
Thursday night to get after Kirby and we'll see what
they do against Like I said Emberson Hancock, who's got
an the IRA of six on the ear. But the
starters on Saturday and Sunday, we know how good Luis
Castillo can be. And Brian wu is five and one

(21:30):
with a two to sixty five ERA on the season
fifty five startouts, so that those guys are nails. You
know you're facing some good arms on Saturday and Sunday,
So we will see what the Astros do there. One
more note on the way out here, Ross Taylor Scott
Cleared Waivers elected free agency over an outright assignment to
triple A per the Astros. So you know, sometimes the

(21:52):
guys like ralphel Montero the clear Waivers, nobody picks him
up and then they go rejoin the club in sugar Land.

Speaker 2 (21:59):
Taylor Scott said, no, thanks, mate, I will be moving on.

Speaker 1 (22:02):
So the Taylor Scott South Africa, whatever they say, But
the Taylor Scott error in Houston ends. And look, he'll
always be remembered for a great twenty twenty four, but
twenty twenty five not so much.

Speaker 4 (22:17):
Yeah, God, I'm but not forgotten. Maybe he'll be a
teammate a Taylor Bowers soon enough.

Speaker 1 (22:21):
