Speaker 1 (00:09):
Astros fans, cheers, fucking lucky. Welcome to the Crawford box Cast,
crowd leanboard for you by Crawford back from Carbach Brewing.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
You're getting da bear.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
Oh my goodness, the Crawford Bucks Cast starts now here
we go. Here's Chris Gordy and Ross via reel.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
And it is a live edition of the Crawford box
Cast coming to you from Carbach Brewing as our first
edition of this season. As Chris Gordy and Ross viiel
from the restaurant over here at Carbach Brewing and nice
little crowd in here. I always like to come over
here after day games for the Astros and just taste
(00:57):
a little bit sweeter when the Astros get a win. Ross,
but always good to uh get over here and enjoy
the Crawford bock right from the tap where it's made.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
Oh yeah, you go right to the source. I don't
know why I'm not hearing myself. Well, okay, that's better,
go right to the source absolutely out here at Carbock Brewing.
And uh, perhaps I'll take a sip of a cold
brew right now.
Speaker 3 (01:19):
Yeah you do that as uh all right, as we
have a plenty to get into here today is the
Astros victorious over the A's five to three.
Speaker 2 (01:31):
Let me just run through a ross. The Astros have
won four games in a row, five or the last six.
They take the quick two game series against the A's.
Where do you fall in that? By the way, are
you two gamer? Is it? Is it a series?
Speaker 1 (01:45):
I guess you still call it a sweep. If it's
a two gamer. It feels like a There should be
a name for it, like a miniature sweep. Yeah, you
sweep something like.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
That, yeah, mini sweep, Yeah, soft sweep, Yeah, something like that.
If it just feels weird to say we swept them,
swept them all two games. But then again, I guess
the Tigers swept the Astros in all two games in
the wild Card series last post Sea.
Speaker 1 (02:06):
We don't have to talk about that. We talked about
the the mini sweep that was against the A's and
eleven to one victory. And Lance mcculler's junior doing his
thing today as well.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
Yeah, real quick, before we get to that. The Astros
are a season high five games above five hundred, so
great spot to be thirty and twenty five twenty a
ten at home. They just take care of business at home.
But the big news of the day prior to today's game,
we found out officially that Runolo Blanco is going to
have elbow surgery. Now the team said elbow surgery. Joe
(02:40):
spot Of clarified in his pregame comments, they I think
Brian McTaggart said, what kind of surgery he goes? Tommy John, So,
I mean it was confirmed, Tommy John. You know these days,
very rarely are are guys having an elbow surgery that's
not repairing the UCLA.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
You seela, yeah, you see, sorry, you see ligament. I believe.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
So he's done for this season and likely most of
next season as well. I mean, we don't want to
put an official diagnosis on it, but yeah, it's basically
been twelve to fifteen months for most guys on Tommy John,
twelve is on the absolute best case scenario. They just
battled through it and that thing healed quickly and they
came back. So most guys, it's been over well over
(03:23):
a year, closer to a year and a half. But
here we are at the end of May. Ross You've
already lost two of your starting pitchers for the year
to Tommy John. You have a third who broke his thumb.
They're hoping he's going to be back sometime in July.
Today was a big start for Lance Mcallers Junior, and
we were hoping for him to take that next step
in his fifth start since returning to the Mound, and
(03:46):
he brought it today his longest outing of the season,
six innings pitched, three urn runs, five hits, with twelve strikeouts,
and the guy just seems to be rounding back into
form after missing two full seasons of baseball.
Speaker 1 (04:01):
Yeah, it's crazy. I mean I didn't know that we
would be here from as even a couple of weeks ago,
when he had that horrible start against the Reds where
he only got one out, he'd given up seven earned runs.
I mean, it was feeling like, if this continues on
this track, this guy could be off the team in
a month. And since then, a couple of okay starts
(04:25):
four innings, no earned runs, but a couple of runs
given up, and then the four and thirty almost got
to five against Seattle and the two earned runs, and
then today, another big step in the right direction, and
it felt like that was coming, even because he had
ninety one pitches in his start before this one, but
and he was getting a lot of swing and miss
with the eight strikeouts, but twelve strikeouts matching a career high.
(04:47):
Again we have to say against the A's they're not
very good, but hey, it's a major league ball club.
You get six innings, three earned given up, twelve strikeouts
with all those swings and misses and getting up to
one hundred and two pitches. This is great. This is
a huge stride in the right direction. We will always,
as I do right now, have the cloud kind of
in the back of our mind hanging over our heads
(05:09):
is the how is he feeling? When Zienner is there?
An injury, other shooter drop there. But hey, he keeps
going out there, he keeps saying he's feeling good, he
keeps building up. He's checking boxes as far as you know,
starting from coming back and rehabbing and then long toss
and then live BP and then rehab and then now
getting back there on the mound and then building back
(05:31):
up and then the last final step getting out and
going deep into games at the major league level. He
jumped over a big hurdle today and it's great to
see him. As you said, much needed with Wesnsky and
Ronel Blanco even if that hadn't happened. It's great for
Lanthe Colors Junior the person. It's great for the organization
to get some value out of that eighteen million dollars
(05:52):
that he's making this year to have him go out
there and him personally. But yes, that much more needed
because of the situation that you are in with the
starting rotation to where now if he can keep this
up and he can get out against good teams and
build on this, and you're talking about Hunter Brown from
er Valdez, you get Arrogatty back at some point, who
(06:13):
I believe has now been cleared to throw and then
Lastpa Colors Junior. That's a solid one through four right there.
Speaker 2 (06:18):
Yeah. I mean the tough reality though, is right now
he's being asked to be the number three. And in
a perfect world, you were hoping when he got back
that he was gonna have to be the number six,
you know, and yeah, and you would have been fine
with that, but the pressure ramps up a little bit. Yeah,
with him sliding up from five to four to three
now behind Hunter Brown and from Bravaldez. So yeah, I
(06:42):
mean again, great great step forward for him, he hits
one hundred and two pitches today, sixty nine of them
from strikes. I mean, that's just outstanding stuff. And then
you know, on the other side, only one walk. You know,
even the last time out against Seattle where he couldn't
get out of the fifth, he was at ninety one pitches,
but he had the three walks. So this is again
(07:04):
another step forward lower in that season era after that
debacle against Cincinnati. But uh again, just you know, six
innings here at one hundred pitches. Yeah, this is what
you hope he gets. You get more out of him,
continue to press forward. You know, maybe he gets six
plus next time. And again this is uh, this is tremendous.
This is really what the asteris need from Les McCullers. Now,
(07:26):
is it all gonna be since Genner roses. No, he'll
probably have a bad starter or two here in the
next month, and that's fine. But all you hope for
is more good than bad out of him.
Speaker 1 (07:35):
Yeah, you're you're not normally even when he was at
his best, even when the guy was I mean breaking
out twenty four curve balls and doing all that stuff,
and in the playoffs and and and being a guy
who can you know, finish top five and a Cy
Young voting. The last Mcolors junior experience was a lot
of crazy movement, which means sometimes lack of control, which
(07:56):
means sometimes racking up walks, but also racking up with
and strikeouts and the pitch coow getting up there. So
really what you saw today and in many respect was
vintage Lance Peculis Junior. He's not normally been a guy
who's gonna go seven eight innings and with this hyper
efficiency like from er Valdez when he's just breaking off
a bunch of a bunch of ground balls all over
(08:16):
the place. But he's been a high volume pitch type
of guy, and so that's how it's gonna be. I think,
even if he continues to round into form and get
back to his best, he's not gonna be a guy
who's gonna give you seven and eight on on a
start in start out basis. But hey, he's got value
doing what he did today against the Oakland A's. You
(08:37):
keep turning in quality starts, and if these bats continue
the way that they've been swinging, good things are gonna
happen for the Houston Astros.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
We should mention too well, uh, we'll keep the fall
lines open for an interactive edition of a live Crawford
Box cast from Carbox Brewing seven one three two on
two five seven ninety seven one three two on two
five seven ninety If you guys want to get in
here and talk astros, uh, you know one of the
good arms in the late Louis Severino. He gets a
no decision today, honestly pitched well enough to get a
(09:07):
win in going six innings, two runs one earned off
three hits with four strikeouts on ninety two pitches. But
Sevarrino one in four on the season with a three
to eighty ninety ray. That should tell you just about
everything you need to know about how the season is
going for the Oakland A's. So yeah, they start off
(09:27):
decently and then here in the last few weeks it's
gone down, down, down, And again it's good in the
asters to take care of business. Gets a bad as
team win these two games. And I mean the swing
and the miss stuff from mccullors today, it was just
it was nasty. Adam Glance said earlier, like vintage mccullor's
is kind of what it felt like.
Speaker 1 (09:48):
Yeah, I think it was Steve Sparks was telling a
story about back in the day in like twenty seventeen,
Brian mccannon some other guys sitting around talking about like
the craziest stuff they'd seen all year was from Lance
mcullors junior. That was, you know, eight years ago now
at this point. But that is the stuff that he
can hopefully get back to, and that's the encouragement. Now
you're talking about twenty strikeouts in the last what ten
(10:12):
and a third innings that he's been out there, not
necess necessarily murders row with the A's, but the Mariner's
got a pretty good lineup. They still got some guys
that can hit. The Brent Rooker, Tyler shot a shram.
I mean, Lawrence Butler got a home run with the
other day. He's decent enough. I mean, these are major
league hitters that he is getting a ton of whiffs
on on the curves, on the sliders. I think it
(10:35):
was sixty two percent with breaking stuff today. So that does,
again kind of just loom over your head, the worry
that something the other shoe's going to drop, as far
as an injury. But he keeps going out there, keeps
feeling good, keeps checking boxes off. Like I said, feels
good and it's great to have him out there.
Speaker 2 (10:52):
The other big news of the day in the lineup,
Christian Walker gets hit on the right hand as he batting,
took a ninety six mile power fastball off his right hand.
Stayed in the game that inning, ran the base and
scored a run, but ended up coming out of the
game after that. Chandler rou I'm saying he said he
wasn't comfortable gripping a bat in the sixth inning. Now,
(11:15):
he did have x rays and they were negative, so
good good sign there at least, But certainly something left
the monitor because it kind of sticks. I mean, Walker
seemed to maybe his bat was starting to turn a
tide here the last couple of games, and you know,
to get hit on the hand like that. It's just
the Disasters team as currently constructed, I don't think could
(11:36):
stomach many more injuries. They're doing well, they're overcoming, but man,
you'll lose one or two more everyday starters for extended
period of time and you're really getting thin.
Speaker 1 (11:46):
Yeah, it's it's tough because you stinally, finally, like you said,
it's finally starting to see some life out of his
bat hit a home run, a couple of games in
a row, only went oh for one today, starting to
see some productive swings from him and seeing some hits,
and you know, it kind of feels like we go
to the old phrase, that's baseball man's Unfortunately, something can
(12:06):
crop up like this, whether it be you know, catcher
taking one or a hitter, especially off the hands, the leg,
the knees. I mean, it's the nature of the game
that they play in. Ninety six mile an hour fastball
off the right hand does not feel good for Christian Walker.
Luckily the X rays negative, so hopefully not a whole
(12:27):
lot of time missed from him, and hopefully you get
yord On back because jose Al Tuove, despite four with
a couple of cas today, has really been swinging a
hot bet. He's like Paradus Jeremy Payne, You're doing his
thing as well. So if you get Christian Walker just
missing a couple of days, get yord On back. I mean,
that's five deep in the lineup right there. Cam Smith
(12:48):
has been swinging well, Jake Myers is been doing well.
Like we could be in a situation where we talked
about how horrible this offense was even a couple of
weeks ago to where you're going six seven deep of
plus hitters, like the good old days of Astros baseball.
Speaker 2 (13:03):
Yeah, and and again there's some guys starting to come up.
We're gonna touch on some of the hitters and bats
starting to come around. We're gonna touch on the outstanding bullpen.
We got plenty more to go here. Coming to you
this whole hour from Carbock Brewing. It is a live
edition of our Crawford Box Cast, presented by the Crawford
Bach and your phone calls are open as well. Seven
(13:24):
one three two on two five seven ninety seven one
three two on two five seven ninety Greg and Dancy,
we'll get to you guys coming up after this, uh,
live from a Carbock Brewing and the Crawford Bock. It's
the Crawford Box Cast. It as a live edition of
(13:45):
the Crawford Box gast coming to you guys from Carbock Brewing.
Of course, the Crawford Box Cast persented by the Crawford Bock.
Always good to be here at carback and I got
the Crawford Bock on tap. I'm looking at it right now.
The Sunrise stripes. Nothing goes better with Astros Baseball than
enjoying a delicious taste of a nice called Crawford Bach.
(14:07):
And hopefully you guys who were at the ballpark today
were taking part in enjoying some Crawford Bach as they
got it all over the ballpark there at Dykin Park.
And good news for us. This extended home stand continues
on four more games with the Tampa Bay Rays coming
in starting tomorrow. No days off, so night game on Thursday,
(14:28):
night game on Friday, a three to ten game on Saturday,
and a one ten game on Sunday. Got to pay
these Rays back for what they did to the Astros
in that little minor.
Speaker 1 (14:38):
League bandbox ridiculous Steinbrenner Field, modeled after the Bandbox Yankee Stadium,
but also with the heat and the wind blowing out,
it was, I mean that last game that Hunter Brown
was throwing it, it was the ball was flying out.
Speaker 2 (14:54):
Now a little pick ahead. After this series against the Rays,
four game series, the Astros will go on the road
starting next Tuesday, a three game set against the Pittsburgh
Pirates up there. I'm kind of a little disappointed Ross
because I wish I would look at the schedule to
they do Wednesday June fourth will be Ryan Gusto versus
(15:14):
Paul Skins. Now, the good news is the Pirates offense stinks,
but that could certainly that could be a two to
one type game. But we'll see on that one. But
I'm a little dispointed look at that sooner on the
schedule because I've never been in that ballpark. I've always
wanted to go and be beautiful. Yeah, and in June, like,
I'm sure it's beautiful up there in Pittsburgh, so should
(15:35):
have planned better on that one. And then they will
go up to Cleveland and take on the Artists formerly
noticed the Indians and Guardians in the three game set,
and then they'll come back for another homestand against the
White Sox and the Twins. My point in saying all
this is some winnable games coming up here now. Again,
the Askers have had winnable games this year that they
didn't take care of business in, but a stretch coming
(15:57):
up that they can strength some more wins together. I mean,
let's be honest. After they took three out of four
against Seattle Ross, we looked at this a series and
what yeah, two and oh right, I mean, like I
think we all expected.
Speaker 1 (16:08):
This we're helping. I mean, we we saw Lance mccullor's
union take a step in the right door. Yeah, Hunter
Brown day was it seemed like an easy dub, especially
going up against the lefty with this stacked righty lineup
that the Astros have finally getting another look at a
lefty and Mashing weren't expecting eleven runs and four home runs.
But that was nice to get. But lancem colors union
could have been a little bit of a question mark.
(16:29):
But hey, we've seen the Astros fumble against really bad teams,
including the White Sox earlier this season, so you take
the wins where you can get them, no matter what.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
I kind of like that. It's a T shirt idea,
a picture of like a caricature of Hunter Brown, and
it just says easy dub.
Speaker 1 (16:43):
I like that, d z dub Diesel. I don't know,
I'm just thinking out Diesel dub easy dope with him
on the mount, it should be.
Speaker 2 (16:52):
How about a bullpen appreciation segment Ross. Yes, yet another
scoreless out of today by Sean A scoreless inning of
relief with two strikeouts zubin dub That is now eight
relief appearances for Duban and an era of zero zero,
Like there're a couple of outings. Okay, it's been eight
(17:14):
appearances now out of the bullpen for him.
Speaker 1 (17:17):
Yeah, that's that's crazy. I mean, look, I think he
went through hot stretches at some points in his astro's
career where he looks pretty good and then he can
go out there and he can give up a few
runs and and well I start lacking control and stuff
like that. But hey, uh, he's looking real good right now.
Whip number is good. Yeah, rate number is good. I mean,
(17:38):
everything that you want to see out of him. He's
been extremely reliable and we've seen, like I said, pockets
of him doing this and even he can keep it up.
That's just another tool in the toolbox for Joe Aspata.
I mean, Josh Hater had a little bit of trouble
finding the strike zone today, but still is able to
get it done. Didn't give up a run. We know
Brian and Bray's been capable of as well. Brian King's good.
(18:00):
I mean, we go up and down the list and
and you know, when we were doing like season preview
Crawford Box casts, one of the concerns where we felt like, Okay, hater, Bray,
you what's gonna happen with everyone else?
Speaker 2 (18:10):
Right?
Speaker 1 (18:10):
And we got all these names we can rattle off
of guys who are looking really good and coming out
of that bullpen for the strows.
Speaker 2 (18:16):
Well, Sean Duben awesome the area of zero and that's
the guy that had one of those setbacks during spring training. Yes, like,
oh gosh, but he got himself right. He's been money.
Brian Abray with a scoreless ending of relief today on
eleven pitches ross. He has a season area of one
eighty two and that includes one or two hiccups where
he's you know, blown a lead or whatever. But two yes,
(18:40):
Ray again, like you gotta look big picture, Brian A.
Brady has been awesome.
Speaker 1 (18:44):
Yeah, And the thing is too is he he's always
especially last year when his numbers took a little bit
of a dip. He's provided value to you as a
as a guy who can go out there and as
far as a bullpen guy goes an innings eater out
of the bullpen. So I mean he provides value because
(19:05):
he's reliable, he's been able to go out there. He
was won in seventy eight games last year. Right now,
he's been in twenty five games. Are at what fifty
five games? Thing I played, so you're you're almost at
half the games at this point. So yeah, if he
can give his ERA hit or two and he's going
out there half the games, you're talking about as far
as you know, piling up wins above replacement and stuff
like that. One of the better relievers in baseball.
Speaker 2 (19:26):
So that's Sean dub and that's Brian Abra. You how
about the rest of the crew. Brian King McNee state
standout a one fifty two era.
Speaker 1 (19:35):
NIEE legend by the way, recommended, Daryl's and Lake Charles
went there quite good.
Speaker 2 (19:38):
Yes, Darryl's very good. Uh. Steven Oker in West Palm,
it was like, oh, this guy, he's got a washout
from let's see, let's see what he does one two
era he's been money. Bennett Susso remember the end of
two seasons ago, he can't join the Steam in that
September was awesome, but couldn't make the postseason roster because
(20:01):
he hadn't been with them long enough. Was hurt all
last season. Comes back, he's gotten the RAF two sixteen.
He's been really good. And then Caleb Ord rounding it
out an ERAF two to eight. He battled some injuries,
but outside of that he's been good. So I mean,
that's just incredible. You're talking about all your major arms
out of the bullpen, have VRA's at around two or lower.
(20:22):
And then the cherry on the cake Ross Josh Hater
converted his fourteenth save and fourteen opportunities so far in
the scoreless ninth with a one fifty ERA. I just
want to revisit all those callers who called in last season,
who were like, what were they thinking? Paying this guy?
All that money? Was money here, one of the best
(20:43):
closers in baseball. He was available on the market. He
had a rough April for whatever the reason was last year,
but he settled down as year went along. But he
has taken that in is carried over this year. He
has been absolute nails, as automatic as they come. Last
year a spot about it on Sunday are even You're
surprised just how automatic Josh Hater he goes. That's who
(21:04):
he is. I mean, he comes in, gets outs and
does his thing. But Josh Hater, I mean, I'm sure
these guys are more saves than him the season, but
he's gotta be close to the top, but how many,
But how many have not blown an opportunity yet? Like
he has been fourteen for fourteenth saved opportunities.
Speaker 1 (21:20):
Yeah, he's been great and it hasn't been blowing the
opportunities and he's looked good. Like I said, struggle a
little bit to find the strike zone, but hey, that
that's the mark of a good closer. Couldn't find the
strike zone, walk the guy, uh and still struck out
the side and got his fourteenth save in in fourteen opportunities.
So absolutely wonderful for Joe Spotty to have that guy,
even to you're to the point where it's a one
(21:42):
run lead and you feel like he's just gonna go
out there and get it done. So even with the
two or three run leads and you're really feeling good,
like this thing is gonna be over. Looks like Andres
Munos is leading the major leagues with seventeen, says Roberts, seventeen. Yeah,
i'd have to. I don't have the blown saved numbers
on this page, but yeah, there's only three guys with
(22:04):
more saves than him, and then I'll be Kyle Finnegan.
Kyle Finnegan of the.
Speaker 2 (22:08):
Washington Yeah, got him on my fancy.
Speaker 1 (22:10):
Oh do you really all right? Well you're doing quite well.
Speaker 2 (22:12):
Then it was it was a gamble because it's like,
how many saves of the National is gonna have opportunities?
Speaker 1 (22:18):
Well he's getting a Hall apparently, So that's a great
pick by you.
Speaker 2 (22:22):
But I think one of the guys that was available
late in the draft was the Rockies closer. But everybody
was like, well, well I take that guy. How many
save opportunities? Is the ron skills we're gonna have? No,
it's been it's been great. And really the only knock
right now, Ross is that's not really a knock. It's
just a kind of my keek up at night. If
(22:42):
you're Joe Espata, is that your rotation right now? Is
Hunter Brown? Awesome? Robert Veldez, Yes, Lanso mccullors, eh, Ryan
Gusto and Colton Gordon. I mean you're three, four, five
are kind of you're a little just suspicious on it
so again and butmculories look great out like today, hopefully
(23:05):
continues to build on it, but leaning on Ryan Gusto
and Colton Gordon to be your four and you're five
for as much season is still left to go over
half the season. It's a big ass, but again, the
hope is Spencer Righetti gets back at some point. The
hope is perhaps LAist Garcia. Maybe JP Francie.
Speaker 1 (23:25):
Heard an update there. But yeah, yeah, we'll see. I've
pulled up the numbers you were asking for. So there
are three guys who have ten or more saves who
are perfect. Josh Hater has the most. He's fourteen for fourteen. Nice,
and when ds Mett's closer, good, pretty good, he's eleven
for eleven. And then Kenny Jansen, Oh yeah, Angels, Yeah,
he's eleven for eleven. So he Those are the three
(23:48):
guys with ten or more saves who are perfect in
save opportunities so far this season. But how does Andres
Munnos have Is this correct? This can't be right. How's
he blow two saves and he's got zero e r A.
Speaker 2 (24:03):
Because of the stupid tient thinning maybe the tith inning
and runner thing.
Speaker 1 (24:07):
I don't know, as that sounds like he's getting a
raw deal. Maybe some unearned runs, I'm not sure, but
there you go.
Speaker 2 (24:14):
Uh. Kenley Jansen, by the way, I mean, he's become
like a journeyman at this, but he's thirty seven years old. Yeah,
he's become a journeyman, just like moving team the team
the last few years. But he's been pretty steady, man.
I mean when he lets the Dodgers in twenty one,
went to the Braves for a year, went to the
Red Sox for two years, and that's with the Angels,
and I mean, Deddy ra just it's a little bit
(24:35):
high right now, over four, but you know, basically a
three E R part of that and all his other
years of pitching.
Speaker 1 (24:42):
So I'm gonna get to the bottom of this munios thing. Yeah,
unearned runs in eleven innings and then another one in
eleven innings, two blown saves. It's the extra unearned runner.
Other than that he has.
Speaker 2 (24:54):
He's got a zero E dang well, zero e R.
We're gonna grab a quick break. We come back. We
will uh. We'll take your calls at seven one, three, two, five,
seven nine. If you guys want to jump in with
any astros comments, any questions, seven one, three, two five semini,
I would love to work in a couple of you guys.
Will also give you our thoughts on some of the
(25:15):
hitters with some of those numbers starting to come up
and ross a concerning word when it comes to the Astros.
I will give you that word when we return. This
is the Astros uh A live edition of the Crawford
Box Cast from Carboch Brewing, presented by the Crawford Bach.
Here from Carbach. The live edition of the Crawford Box
(25:39):
Cast coming to you from Carbach Brewing, as of course,
presented by the Crawford Bach. Hopefully you guys had plenty
of Crawford Box watching the Astros beat up on the
A's today, getting a big win five to three. As
the Astros have on four in a row five of
their last six. They improved the thirty and twenty five
over all on the season. That's the most most games
(26:03):
they've been over five hundred all season long, five so
hopefully they continue to play at this pace. They are
now one game back of the Mariners. I believe the Mariner.
The Mariners play later tonight.
Speaker 1 (26:14):
Yeah, I think so, so we'll get a.
Speaker 2 (26:16):
Look on that. But one game back in the Mariners.
In the American League West and really Nationals really as
we talk about not just the American League West, but
we look at the American League or Uls, the Detroit
Tigers lead all the base or lead all the American
League with a record of thirty seven and twenty. The
Yankees are one and a half back of them. The
(26:37):
Mariners are the third best team in the American League,
five back in the Tigers, and then you've got the Guardians,
the Astros, and the Twins all tied at thirty and
twenty five as of this recording. Again, some of these
teams could point later tonight could change it. But I
mentioned all that to say all it will take is
the Tigers skid at some point in June or July
(26:59):
and August and the Astros to jump the marriage. I mean,
we could be talking about some point this summer the
Astros perhaps having the best record in the American League.
I don't want to get too ambitious.
Speaker 1 (27:08):
You are, though, Well, that's okay. I mean they've they've
won for in ah what four in a row. Now
at this point the Astros they have the third best
run differential in the American League. I think it's gonna happen.
I mean, what was what was the year was it
twenty twenty three or or somewhere around there where the
Yankees were like on pay They're coming for the they're
coming for the two thousand and one Mariners, and then
(27:30):
they had a huge collapse. We are a third of
the way through the season, but there is a ton
of baseball left and really, I mean, we could definitely
make the argument that the Astros haven't made anywhere close
to played anywhere close to their best baseball. I mean,
Frommer could continue to round into form. You can get
Spencer Arrighetti back Lands, Becaulors Junior hopefully continues to give
you quality starts. And then we talked about all the
(27:51):
underperforming bats that are that are hoping. We're hoping they
can wake up and in the case of you are
doing now rescue back in the field. Dude's missed like
twenty games.
Speaker 2 (27:59):
That's where to go next, because this is just getting
very interesting with him. He's been on the al but
they've been calling him day to day basically and saying, oh,
I could be back at any moment now. Joe Spot
admitted the other day he's been hitting. I mean I
saw him on Sunday on the field pregame running. He's
been running the basis they're keeping his legs.
Speaker 1 (28:17):
First, I saw him yesterday. He was out there making
crazy grabs out there, he could run his hand.
Speaker 2 (28:23):
They say he's been he's been swinging a bat. But
the problem is that what Joe kind of said is
they're worried about a flare up. He goes, I could
put him out there today in the lineup. The problem
is if that hand the inflammation comes back, then he's
gonna miss it the other day or two or three,
you know. So that's but I don't know, like how
(28:45):
do you get to a point where inflammation is just
not gonna happen? You know what I mean? Like that
that that means there's something in that hand that's injured
right that keeps causing inflammation. And that's the word of
the day that I don't like because ross after the
game today, Chris Walker, speaking with the media about his
right hand they got hit by a ninety six mile
for our first ball, said he's sore, but good quote,
(29:08):
it's just a matter of handling the inflammation.
Speaker 1 (29:11):
Get us some anti inflammatory now, doctor, that's good.
Speaker 2 (29:14):
This one seems like, Okay, it's swollen because you got
hit on the hand. Yes, give it a rest for
a day or two, maybe perhaps even three, and this
thing will go down and put an ice pack on
it and the inflammation will go down and go away.
Christian Walker will wait fine. I just wonder what is
the inflammation issue with Jordan that it just keeps being
a concern. And the other part of this that they
(29:35):
keep saying, oh, it's on him. It's like it almost
sounds like the trainers have cleared him. Joe A spot
is good to play him, but they're waiting on Jordon
to make the decision to say, Hey, guys, I'm good,
I will play today.
Speaker 1 (29:48):
That's the phrase that Joe Aspata has continued to use.
He used it on The Mat Thomas Show with Ross.
We have him Tuesdays at twelve thirty Da Too, Doug
to where we're waiting for him to tell us he's
good to go, which sounds like he's been medically cleared, right.
But look, I'm kind of detaching myself from this. I
(30:11):
don't whenever he shows up in the lineup, he shows
up because I'm not If you want to call ordn soft,
you go ahead and tell that to his face. You
know what I'm saying, Like, if he's not feeling right
and he knows his body and he's had issues throughout
his career, whether it be knees, legs, hands, oblique, whatever,
and and and if he thinks it's gonna hamper him
and he's not gonna be one hundred percent of the plate,
(30:32):
then then we don't need him out there. So it isn't.
The unfortunate part is that it dragged out to where
we were given a timeline to where he could have
been in the lineup according to the Astros, like basically
a week and a half ago the weekend series against
the Rangers. So it has drugg on from that standpoint.
But if we just kind of step back and say, hey,
the timeline or whatever, whenever he's gonna be ready, he's
(30:56):
gonna be ready. So I'm trying to do my best
to like like I said, attached from the situation when
he shows up in the lineup could until then. So
let me know, I don't need every five minute updates
on your on Oh he's off a tee or ifoh
he's doing this, or he's in batting practice. Are he's
doing pitches? Coach? Uh, he's hitting the little tikes, he's
got the fun go bad. I don't know what he's got.
I don't care what he's got when he's in the
(31:16):
line When I see jor Don Alvarez at the two
three four spot wherever in the lineup with d h
Er left field next to his name, then I'll get
excited about it. Until then, it's kind of like, I'm
kind of over this drama because it just keeps on
dragging out the way that it is, and it's and
like I said, it's not like he doesn't want to play.
So if he's not feeling one hundred percent, that's cool.
(31:39):
Put him out there, as Joe Spotta says, when he
tells me he's ready, we'll put him in the lineup.
Speaker 2 (31:44):
Yeah, no doubt. I do want to touch on a
little bit of the lineup as well as the numbers
are coming up. I mean, Jeremy Payne has been out
standing obviously, a two ninety seven batting average, four forty
five slugging eight oh eight ops. Great, now, Jeremy Payne
been your MVP thus far. Jake Myers still batting two
(32:04):
ninety three. I mean, I'm ross. I'm dumbfounded that that
number has still been as high as it has been.
So that's good.
Speaker 1 (32:11):
We just hopefully it doesn't go down with a counter
dress of June.
Speaker 2 (32:14):
Like, yeah, Victor Karttini's up to two eighty. He had
the huge monster hit today that broke a three to
three tie, gave the Astros a five to three lead.
You have Maurice U Dubond who was actually struggling for
a couple of weeks there, not playing a ton. He's
up to two seventy six, so that's good, you know.
(32:37):
Even jose Al Twovey's now up to two sixty seven.
He was betting two thirty eight a week ago. Ross.
In the last seven days, L two Ve has at
not one, but two two home run games since last Tuesday.
He has fourteen hits last Tuesday. It's it's Wednesday of
the next week.
Speaker 1 (32:55):
Yeah, it doesn't surprise you because his name is jose
L two Ve, but it had crept into my mind.
Thirty five years old, worst ops in like ten years
last year. Some decline after the hot start, but it's
good to hear from him that he's swinging the hot bad.
He's working on some stuff with Alex Sintron, having heard
from fire Hitting Coach Guide last few days. Funny how
(33:17):
that works, but working with him, working on focusing on
certain pitches rather than trying to cover the plate for
the entire repertoire of whatever picture he's facing, looking for
stuff that he can hit, and looking for his pitches
and driving them and putting fast swings on it as well.
I'm a guy who kind of looks at these statcast
swing numbers and stuff like that, like his numbers all
(33:39):
season long and really for his last couple of years,
which they have tracked or are pretty low. But he's
been putting in some fast swings. He's been having a
lot of hard hit contact, so it looks like he's
starting to dial in despite the zero for four day
with a couple of strikeouts today. Great to see and
much needed if the Astros are going to continue a
big piece of the puzzle to content continue to push
(34:01):
for American League West crown. Big piece of the puzzle
is gonna be Jose Altuve, and it's great to see
how quickly he can turn it around. Like you said,
basically a week ago, his ops for six twenty nine,
that's terrible, and then now he's up to seven twenty five. Yes, yes, yes,
you go from well below league average to basically league
average to slightly ahead in a week's time. That's how
(34:24):
hot of a bad he's swinging. But also it's Jose
freaking al Tuove. We shouldn't be shocked.
Speaker 3 (34:30):
Now.
Speaker 2 (34:30):
He did go for four today, but I'll give him that.
He's he's in today, he said, a red hot week,
full out east Soak Paradis, I mean again, continues to produce. Yeah,
he was zero for to today but had to run,
had an RBI, had to walk. Yeah, averages two sixty seven.
He just produces like he just continues to hit the
occasional home run. I like it. I like that one
(34:51):
two punch of Pania one parades two. And then you know,
how about Zach Dezenzo, another guy making the most of
his opportunity. Still beat around two forty seven ish, but
two hits today, had a big home run that tied
the game at three when they really needed it. And
I just like Zach Decenzo a lot man. They move
him around, he can play multiple positions, he's tall. He
(35:16):
and then camp Smith continue to find his groove. Ross
he has, you know, a hit, drives in a run today,
the average is a two sixty one. He's continuing to
figure it out. He's having a nice month of May,
and I just like it. I mean, they're playing a
lot of young guys when you think about it, like
Dana Brown. This is the big reason why the Astros
hired him was to restock this farm system and try
(35:39):
to find talent develop talent, and that's what they're starting
to do. So is Dezenzo has become a nice piece
that's playing regularly. And you look at camp Smith batting
three seventeen in the month of May. We're about to
close the book on May. The rookie has figured some
things out. And again it's a little scary to lean
on guys like them and Gusto and Holding Gordon and
(36:00):
so many young, inexperienced pieces. But it certainly is a
slap in the face ross all those people are like, ah,
Astro's farm system stinks. Oh it's cutting. There's no talent there.
I mean, these guys are all coming up going you
said no talent, Well, we're proving your wrong. Well.
Speaker 1 (36:15):
Camp Smith was definitely a top one hundred prospect. Zach Dezenzo,
I think before last year was a number forty guy
in Baseball Prospectus. But it's also not like he's doing
well at the major league level. But it's not like
this guy's like Bobby Witt junior or something like that.
Speaker 2 (36:29):
And I'm talking Colton Gordon and Ryan Gusto and the
guys that you know are the.
Speaker 1 (36:33):
Guys with five and six e ras. Okay, but yeah,
they're getting done. But it's not like they're coming up
and being Paul Skeens or something like that, you know,
or or Hunter Brown was the top one hundred prospects.
So yeah, they're they're filling holes in the major league roster.
But we also can't act like the guys are just
getting dealing up here and setting the world on fire.
Speaker 2 (36:53):
We haven't even seen Jacob Mountain, who's considered one of
their top prospects at the minor league level, so perhaps
we'll see him at some point this season. All right,
let's grab one more break, we'll come back and we
will wrap things up. Coming to you from car Block Brewing,
it's the Crawford box Cast Live Edition presented by the
Crawford Bok At Carbock Brown, I found a segment of
(37:19):
the astros what we'll call it a Crawford box Cast
Live edition on here from Carbach Brewing presented by the
Crawford Bach. Looking at it on tap right, now behind
the bar here inside it.
Speaker 1 (37:34):
Might be going down my throat right now. Wait, uh,
don't clip that.
Speaker 2 (37:37):
The uh it is Uh, We're coming to you from Carbock.
And inside the restaurant here it's a ton of people
going upstairs at a private event. There's a bunch of
people outside in the beer garden. So this is that
time of year. Uh, it's hot, but it's not oppressively
hot yet. The oppressively hot is coming in the next
couple of months. But a lot of people still getting
outdoors and enjoying the sun. Start to go down here
(38:00):
and uh in Houston and enjoy the night out. But ross.
As we wrap up here on the Crawford Box cast,
no rest for the weary. The Astros keep on rolling.
Four games against Tampa. I would say, you know, this
sets up Ryan Gusto from ber Valdez, Colton Gordon, and
Hunter Brown. Two and two is what I will say,
(38:21):
is what the hope will be on this home stand
against Tampa. The Astros have not lost the series. They've
lost what one series at home all year, and that
was the sweep to the San Francisco Giants in the
first week of the season. So I'm gonna say two
and two in the stretch against Tampa.
Speaker 1 (38:34):
Let's say you I'm getting greedy. You split the Gordon
Gusto games and win the Brown and and Fromber games.
Let's go, okay, three four, all right? Why not? Three
and of four ain't bad.
Speaker 2 (38:44):
And you're gonna see some of the same arms you
saw as that little uh Taj Bradley swinging some hot batch.
Speaker 1 (38:50):
You're not gonna be in that bandbox. I think that's
gonna bode well for uh, for what happened to Hunter Brown, Yeah,
and and for for fromber Valdez as well. Yeah, I'm
feeling good.
Speaker 2 (39:01):
Yeah, I feel good of that of that too, and
how it chakes up the rest of the season until
All Star Break. You're at your home for Tampa. Then
you're at Pittsburgh at Cleveland. You come home for the
White Sox and the Twins. Then you're on a West
Coast road trip four out with the A's ross all
four games at the A's Ballpark nine oh five, nine
(39:22):
oh five, nine oh five, nine oh five, and then
to coffee three in La eight thirty eight, eight thirty eight,
and then a three o'clock Sunday game against the Angels.
You come home, you get three against the Phillies, three
against the Cubs. Then you go up to Colorado for
three up there many three from I hope back for
that one.
Speaker 1 (39:41):
You say, Hey, all of a sudden, my hands feeling,
oh we can hit Colorado.
Speaker 2 (39:44):
Then's coree in Dodger Stadium on July fourth weekend, and
then you get come back home for a six game
home stamp, three against Cleveland and three against the Texas
Rangers for a big divisional showdown before the All Star break.
So that's what's kind of shaping up these next weeks.
And again, let's just keep winning here, Astros. We got
(40:05):
ten seconds here left, so appreciate you guys for listening. Ross,
appreciate you for joining us. I'm Chris Gordon. This has
been the Crawford Box Cast, presented by Carbox Brewing and
the Crawford Back We'll talk to you guys tomorrow.
