Speaker 1 (00:00):
Let's talk some Bills Texans Thursday Night Football with Jeremy
White WGR five point fifty up there in Buffalo.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
Appreciate the time today, Jeremy.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
Let's just start off first with where things stand on
the injury front with the Bills heading into this one,
looks like it's a pretty crowded list there the first
couple of days of practice. Who do you think goes?
Who do you think could be interesting to keep an
eye on?

Speaker 3 (00:26):
Well? I think the obvious one that won't go. Dalton
can Cave. Their tight end was week to week after
suffering with a hamstring injury. He's been someone of that
little trouble staying on the field, but week to week
with a hamstring he missed last week against TAVA, would
fully expect on a short week he does not go.
Curtis Samuel another one to watch here in terms of
whether or not he goes, just because he did play

(00:46):
last week. He's another one that's always you know, his
availability is I guess unreliable. But beyond that we can
Bills have a number of players that have been playing
hurt and kind of going through his best day. Ken
Joey Bosa is one of them. He's had a hand injury.
He hit that rap was playing with a like a
giant rap on his handle. They called it a Q tip. Actually,

(01:07):
Nicole Hardman calf injury. He'd only on the team for
a week before suffering that calf injury. So you know,
we'll see Shack Thompson's important. But for the most part,
builds have a lot of names on the list, but
not a lot of guys I would expect to miss
the game.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
We talked about this matchup.

Speaker 4 (01:23):
It's it's just interesting, you know, And I think back
to these teams played just a little over a year ago,
and you know, Josh Allen had one of his worst games,
you know, and MVP having his worst game against this
Texans defense, And I think we're all curious to see
how they match up tomorrow night, what Demiko Ryans is
going to do to scheme up against him, because the

(01:44):
Texas defense seems to be even better this year. They're
they're not top ranked defense a lot of statistical categories. So, uh,
is it as simple to say that if if the
Texans make Josh Allen's night a living hell, that that's
that's their recipe for a win here tomorrow.

Speaker 3 (01:57):
Night, I think so. I mean the Bills this year,
they just had their best offensive game of the year
against the Bucks, and it was a site for sore
eyes because a lot of things happened. They opened up
the passing game in a way they had not this year.
They also were able to pass the ball against the
team that successfully stopped the run for a couple of weeks.
There there are other losses if you stopped the run.

(02:19):
The passing game had really seemed to be limited and
didn't really attack anybody vertically. But I kind of changed
last week. They changed their receivers to a degree. Keo
Coleman was inactive because of the disciplinary issue, but honestly
they could have sat him for performance too and it
would have been just fine. So getting Josh Palmer back healthy,
getting Gabriel Davis back, you know, he was a former

(02:39):
Bill who was here for many years and had success
in good chemistry with Josh Allen. So there's optimism about
the passing game kind of return, returning to where people
want to see it. But there's still our concerns. Of course,
against the great defense, it'll be a big challenge, and
of course the Bill's defense is not great, so you know,
if any team can run the ball on them, they

(03:00):
can kind of control the game script. And we'll see.
But I think it's definitely a big test. This offense
runs the ball well. Their receivers on the outside, while
productive last week, do leave something to be desired, and
it'll be a big challenge. If they can chuck on
the passing game, they'll have a chance again.

Speaker 1 (03:16):
Jeremy White WGR five point fifty up there in Buffalo,
join us here on the seven to ninety Morning Show.
James Cook another guy that we've talked at lengths about
this morning, and you know just how important it is
for the Texans to limit him tomorrow in this game.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
Is he the wild card in this offense?

Speaker 1 (03:33):
Like, is it pretty easy to see that if he goes,
this team wins. If he doesn't, then it's a little
bit of a rougher proposition.

Speaker 3 (03:42):
To a degree. One thing that happened last week in
the Bucks game is something that the Bills did a
lot last year after they lost to the Texans, and
it was kind of they found a formula, and that
is using their running backs in the passing game. James
Cook and Ty Johnson and Ray Davis to a lesser extent,
but in that game again Tampa, the running backs top
more than one hundred yards. Ty Johnson took a little

(04:04):
swing pass for a fifty yard touchdown and running backs
as a part of a passing game. Last year the
Bills were number one of the NFL and how much
they actually added to their passing game by using the backs,
and this year that's just been oddly absent. Whether it's
more of a commitment to actually running it instead of
throwing into the backs. So that's one thing I'd be
looking for here, Like Can James could hit the ball

(04:24):
not just in handoffs, but also in the passing game
to get him in space because he is such a
dynamic player. He gets better every year, contact, bounced angles,
finding extra yards. He's a really good running back, really good,
one of the best in the league, and in the
passing game he can.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
Bring him a lot.

Speaker 4 (04:40):
The guy calling those plays, Joe Brady, Obviously he's had
a lot of success there as the OC. But it
is funny how the season goes. There's been a lot
of scrutiny, shall we say, on Nick Cayley here in
Houston in his first year as THEOC, but it's funny.
Jeremy just watching from afar, like the first few weeks
of the season, born in the thirties, every game and

(05:01):
I'm seeing everybody's loving Joe Brady, and then they go
on that two game skid. I'm saying, oh my god,
Joe Brady sucks. He's not the guy for this job.
So what is the kind of you know, past the
midway point here, what is the general consensus on Joe
Brady seoc there.

Speaker 3 (05:16):
I like to call this, guys, I like to call
this this the curse of having Josh Allen. And I'm
talk partly to blame here, but when you have Josh
Allen as your quarterback, your offense better be one of
the top three in the league or else you're doing
something wrong right, And maybe that's an unfair standard to have,
but they have a couple of losses where they're scoring
less than twenty points. They lost in Atlanta, they didn't

(05:36):
score much. They lost to the Patriot of the Dolphins
where thirteen and sure turnovers can be a problem there,
but it's more than that. They were scoreless through three
quarters in Miami, and it's kind of thing where Miami's
defense is terrible there's no world that should ever happen
if your quarterback is Josh Hallen. So it's if you're
offensive coordinator and you get this job, good news you

(05:57):
have Josh Allen, bad news if you're not, you know, amazing.
Every week we're going to ask why he has definitely
done a good job. This offense has a good run game.
They have some compliments to Alan. I think we know
what their limitations at receiver. But all in all, you know,
there's a franchise that's won as many games as any
team in the last five years, knocked on the door

(06:18):
of beating the Chiefs four times in the playoffs and
lost all four times, lost to the Bengals once in
the postseason. So you know, life is a Bills fan
is great because they're very good and also torturists because
until they actually get to a super Bowl, we're just
going to be waiting for them to show us that
they can get to a super Bowl. And sometimes I
think Bills fans, myself included here in this conversation, I

(06:40):
think sometimes we want to be convinced they can make
the Super Bowl. In mid October.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
Again, Jeremy White joining us.

Speaker 1 (06:45):
You can find him on Twitter at Jeremy WGR also
part of the Jeremy and Joe Show every weekday morning
six to ten am. They're up in Buffalo on WGR
five fifty. Defensively for the Bills in this one, what
has been kind of a tripping point for them this season?
Like what do you what can you put a finger

(07:06):
on being an issue for them? That's kind of been
a theme in their three losses.

Speaker 3 (07:11):
Well. Earlier in the season, everything was bad about the defense.
They had no answers in the run game, and the
only reason the teams didn't throw all over them, I
think is because the run defense was so bad that
all you had to do was run. Now, I think
their pass defense has improved. They've got Cole Bishop, their
second year safety who got burned in Houston last year
by Dico Collins. It's like the only thing we remember

(07:32):
Cole Bishop for in his rookie season. He's gotten a
lot better. He's a big part of what they do
on the back end. Jordan Player is back after leaving
for Miami. That safety pair has solidified the back end.
Max harriston the rookie corner with Christian Bendford. Like they've
got a generally good bad secondary now and earlier in
the year it looked really rough. The constant is the

(07:52):
run defense. Everybody runs all over the Bills pretty much
everybody career days. Whoever you are, you're gonna have a
big day. Sean Talker had a big day. Kamara and
Kendre Miller for the Saints had a big day.

Speaker 2 (08:05):
You name it.

Speaker 3 (08:06):
Derrick Henry went for one sixty nine against the Bill
in the opener. So run defense continues to be a problem.
It's part scheme, it's part talent. They've been injured on
their defensive line for a lot of the year, missing pieces.
They've been calling up practice squad defensive lineman almost every
single week, so it's been a mixed bag on that

(08:26):
front line. They're missing at Oliver, they're missing Michael Hoyt,
They're missing pieces, and it's I don't think it's going
away as a problem. It's a manager. It's a matter
of managing it as best they can.

Speaker 4 (08:38):
It is interesting. I mean you mentioned that that everybody's
run on them. Well, the one thing that Texans can't
do is run the football. They seem to have given
more carries here in recent weeks more touches to what
he marks, the rookie running back over the old and
washed Nick Chubb. So I'm really curious to see how
that plays out tomorrow night. If what he marks gets

(09:00):
a bulk of the touches and he's running effectively, maybe
you know, maybe a career game for him could be
coming down the pike. But at the end of the day,
to me, this just all comes back, Jeremy to what
Davis Mills is. He's a backup quarterback who's played above
his head. Yes he beat Jacksonville, Yes he beat the Titans.
The Bills are a different animal. So I look at it.
To me, I mean, whatever Josh Allen does against this

(09:21):
Texans defense, it is what it is. If the Texas
are going to win this game, they got to score
points with Davis Mills. So what's your thoughts on him?
And I mean from a Buffalo perspective, shouldn't you look
at is this a backup quarterback?

Speaker 2 (09:31):
We should get after this guy?

Speaker 3 (09:33):
Yeah, it's funny the Bills played a backup quarterback earlier
this year. They played Carolina and Andy Dalton, and we
got a little nervous thinking, like, hey, akg Veteran, maybe
at Lacs Liviyan upgrade. The Bills were just fine. They
dominated the thing I noticed about Davis Mills so far,
and you guys can tell me if this is wrong,
but he has established a good chemistry with Nico Collins
right like, hey, he went in doubt throw it to
the best receiver on the team, So baby, that could

(09:55):
be a way to victory. But I just think the
past defense has really come come to play. So I
think the formula for beating the Bills team, if you're
gonna do it, you got to maybe get a turnover
or two. If your defense is great and you can
run the ball, you can find your way to a win.
I don't know what he Mark's career high is, but
it wouldn't be out of the question. I'm telling you,
if you're a fantasy football player anywhere ever, you've got

(10:18):
a running back going against the Bills, you've got to
start him. I started Sean Tucker in lineups last week
because the run defense is they're gonna get got. Like
I'm telling you, you can run on this team. Almost
anybody can run the team. Even a team that doesn't
run well should expect to have some success.

Speaker 1 (10:33):
That's music to Jamiko Ryans and Nick Cayley's ears, that's
for sure, because they've been looking for an opportunity to
be able to do that all season long. Again, he's
Jeremy White WGR five point fifty up there in Buffalo,
part of the Jeremy and Joe Show on the morning.

Speaker 2 (10:48):
And on Twitter.

Speaker 1 (10:49):
Well, I know that he's a big dog guy, so
that means that I'm a big fan of this guy too,
So Jeremy, appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (10:54):
Man.

Speaker 1 (10:55):
We will catch up with you again here sometime down
the road, but of course we'll all be watching tomorrow
night and see how it goes for either Buffalo or Houston.

Speaker 2 (11:03):
Thanks for your time anytime.

Speaker 3 (11:05):
Thanks guys,
