Speaker 1 (00:00):
Sonny Morning Show, Chris Gory and Dan Matthews with you
and join us now. A guy who was man kind
of took the leak by storm this year for the
Toronto Blue Jays, one of their dynamic relievers. Pitched very
well throughout this season for the Blue Jays, and then
kind of made a name for himself in the postseason,

(00:22):
you know, making eight postseason relief appearances as a rookie
and including pitching in that eighty epic eighteen inning game
for Toronto that came up just short. I know it's
probably still fresh those things. But a local kid right
here in Houston, graduate of Clear Falls, was honored last
night at his alma modern. He joins us now he
has Braiden Fisher of the Toronto Blue Jays. Braiden, welcome

(00:44):
in man, thanks for hopping on with us.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
Yeah, thank you for having me.

Speaker 1 (00:47):
So what was that like, man? I mean, obviously, you
have this fantastic season and I'm sure everybody's following your
career throughout the year. But to come back home last
night and be honored at the Clear Falls, uh Clare
Lake game had to be pretty cool.

Speaker 2 (01:02):
Yeah, it was really cool, just being a spot in
life where I'm even getting considered for having something done
for me like that is pretty cool. Uh, And it
was great being back on you know, the field I
used to go watch football games on.

Speaker 1 (01:16):
Again.

Speaker 3 (01:16):
Braiden Fisher's joining us here on the seven ninety Morning Show.
And Braiden, are you aware that your dad called us
before coming to see you play? Did he tell you that.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
Called you? Oh? He was Uh he called in randomly.

Speaker 3 (01:32):
Yeah he did, Yeah, because it was it was leading
into games one and two, and he said that he
and your mom were were going to be in l
A for uh three through five. So yeah, man, So
shout out to your dad. Man, it was It was
great to hear from him, And obviously we were pulling
for you in the uh in the World Series. Kind
of along the lines of what Chris just asked you

(01:54):
right there, Take us through that that moment when when
you know you're sitting in the bullpen, the bullpen phone rings,
the bullpen coach says, hey, fish, get hot, Like, is
the heart racing a little bit more because of the
stakes or are you trying to slow it down and
try and treat it like it's any other game.

Speaker 2 (02:10):
Well, the heart's definitely racing because of the stakes, but
I'm also trying to slow it down so that I
can you know, compete and be under control. But you know, uh,
the eleven I think I went in the eleventh inning
of that eighteen inning game, and you know we're not
at home, so if I go out there and you know,
one swing could end the game. But yeah, I'm just

(02:32):
you know, I'm doing my best to slow my heart
right now, even more so in the playoffs than I
would in the regular seasons.

Speaker 1 (02:38):
It was fun too watching. I mean, you know, look,
Showho Tani. He he's the best, He's the best player
in baseball. Might be the history of baseball might end
up being. Yeah, I like the strategy is that game
kept going extra innings. I mean that that had to
be the strategy that I talked about behind the scenes. Right,
don't let him kill us when he comes up. We're
walking no matter what the situation is.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
Right, Yeah, yeah, for sure. You know, I am not
too much in the strategic conversations, but I could have
guessed before the game even started that that was going
to be the case. Again.

Speaker 3 (03:11):
Braden Fisher joining us here on the seven ninety Morning Show.
I mean, just you know along that too. I mean,
you know, you you got some good action in the
World Series, and you know, guys like Treya Savage became
a household name, but a guy that we know around here.
George Springer, what's it like to be teammates with him

(03:32):
and what does he bring you guys?

Speaker 2 (03:35):
Yeah, I mean it's it's unbelievable. Growing up in Houston
and watching him have the success that he had in
my hometown with the hometown team. You know, we kind
of looked up to him when we were in high
school and stuff. And you know, when the Astros won
the World Series, I skipped school that day and went
to the parade, and you know, he's just and then,

(03:56):
you know, showing up to spring training this year and
sharing a locker room with him for the first time,
you know, you're kind of in all for the first
couple of weeks, and then you realize that he's just
a normal dude. But getting to see him have one of,
if not the best season of his career at the
I think he's thirty six, was pretty remarkable, and you know,
he's just a great dude along with a great player.

Speaker 1 (04:15):
Talking with Braden Fisher of the Toronto Blue Jays, of
course a local kid right from Houston, Texas and Brandon.
I mean, look the SATAYNYE game. It would epic one.
I mean, every every pitch was was, you know, everybody
on the seat, edge of their seat. I think the
Dodgers kind of became the enemy of a lot of
people across the country. I think so many people were

(04:36):
rooting for you. Everywhere went around Houston, people were rooting.
They're like, we're cheering for the Blue Jays, won't what
the Dodgers to one another? So for that thing to
come down to, I mean, obviously it's still fresh. It's
not even a week old. I mean, is that one
that just lives with you the next couple of days?
Do you when do you start to turn the paved
and look ahead to next season?

Speaker 2 (04:56):
Yeah? Well, I mean currently I'm still you know, man
we should have won that game, or man we you know,
I wish we would have won, or you know, but
you can only do that so often. It's already over with.
And uh I saw I've seen a map of supposedly
the people the States cheering for which team, and it
was pretty cool seeing a lot of you know, the

(05:18):
US was cheering for a Canadian team. But and I
know all the Houston was cheering for the Blue Jays
because of Springer and Miles Straw. But yeah, I mean,
I say, a week, I know everyone's different For me.
You know, I obviously wish I won, but uh, I'm
gonna take a little bit of a break from doing

(05:38):
anything and just relax and then you know, get it,
get after it in a week or so.

Speaker 3 (05:43):
I mean, you've got other things this saw season two
concern yourself with, right, Oh.

Speaker 2 (05:47):
Yeah, getting married and on Thursday.

Speaker 3 (05:50):
That's awesome, man, congratulations to you. That's that's obviously as
not of preparation enough and and everything that goes into that.
So yeah, man, again, congratulations. I do want to touch
on something you mentioned because I've always wanted to ask
pro athletes that are from here or wherever they're from,
like if there's still a little bit part of you
that roots for the team that you grew up or

(06:11):
is it like once you're in it and you're you're
with an organization, it's like, all right, you know, this
is my job, this is my livelihood, personal, professional, all
of that, Like, does does a little bit of the
personal still come in? Like do you find yourself rooting
for the Astros or is it all all J's all
the time?

Speaker 1 (06:27):
Now?

Speaker 2 (06:28):
Oh yeah, I mean yeah, I root for the Astros
unless we're playing them, you know, or unless their win
of directly affects our position in the in the what's
it called the running of playoffs or something like that.
I mean, you know, everybody's got their hometown team they
grew up rooting for, and you know it's it never

(06:48):
goes away. Now I'm a Blue Jay, I'm going to
root for the Blue Jays number one for however long
I play for them. But yeah, I mean, Astro is
a big part of my life. I'm from Houston, so
I'm a root for them. A little bit.

Speaker 1 (07:02):
We're talking with talking with Braiden Fisher from right here
in Houston, League City. I went to Claire Falls High
School and obviously had such a great season with the
Blue Jays. Another Houston connection. I mean, you were traded
to the Blue Jays for Cavin Biggio. Obviously a lot
of us familiar with that name here in Houston. But

(07:22):
what was it about this season man that that everything clicked?
Because it was what back in May you get selected
to the forty man roster promoted to the Biggs. I
mean I was reading articles this week Braden saying that
that you know, you were should have been in more
consideration for Rookie of the Year because of how good
of a season you had. How were you able to
have such great success just get to the big league level.
Is it just feeling relaxed and trusting your stuff?

Speaker 2 (07:46):
Yeah, I mean I really think you hit the nail
on the head for me personally. I think if I
could just go up there and you know, trust what
I have and what I've done to prepare for the
for the season, not try and do too much, that
was really what came down to it. You know, I
worked hard last offseason to get my body in a

(08:06):
better position to perform, you know, day in and day out.
But then when I'm up there, you just have a
confidence and what you've done and what you have, and
you know, maybe your fastball stucks that day and you
just have to trust that the other stuff will get
you through it instead of forcing the fastball. But yeah,
I think you just take it a day at a
time and believe that what you've done has been enough.

Speaker 1 (08:27):
Of course, Braden Fisher, pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays
with the regular season, I want to say seven to
zero two seven e E r A. I mean, what
a great season to have as a as a rookie
and only going to build on that and wish your
best of luck man again. You know we're hoping our
astros are in there in the World Series, but maybe
at ALCS next year with Toronto versus Houston and you

(08:48):
can have both worlds collide there. But congratulate all the
success man, and being honored last night at at your
high school at clare Falls, and best of luck as
you head into the off season. A wedding next week.

Speaker 2 (09:00):
Thank you so much. I really appreciate it.

Speaker 3 (09:02):
Yeah, awesome stuff, Braiden, appreciate it man, and congratulations again
again Braden Fisher, Toronto Blue Jays pitcher and also Clear
Falls product from as Gordy mentioned right there in the
clear Lake area. So great to be able to catch
up with them and talk a little ball
