Speaker 1 (00:00):
We're here at Dyke and Park.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
It's Astro's fan Fest.

Speaker 3 (00:03):
You got Dan Matthews, Adam Wexler, Rossby Raale, and now
joined by high school quarterback football legend here in the.

Speaker 1 (00:10):
Greater Houston area, that's Bryce Matthews.

Speaker 3 (00:13):
I had the pleasure of being ats and covering many
of your both baseball and football games. Do you let
yourself think at all about maybe the quarterback path, this
is what I could have taken?

Speaker 4 (00:25):
Uh, not really, not at all, But it's fine and
kind of just like talk to my teammate still that
are still playing and all my friends and just see
that they enjoy it and I played through them, so
I enjoy what I do more than anything. But yes,
it's a lot of fun playing football.

Speaker 3 (00:43):
I did also have a chance to you play a
lot of high school baseball, a lot of postseason high
school baseball, and it was pretty easy to see.

Speaker 5 (00:49):
And you're playing.

Speaker 3 (00:50):
Shortstop, the position you're hoped to be playing at the
major league level as well for the hometown team. What
do you think about the path that's brought you to
this point as you're here at to Astro's.

Speaker 1 (00:59):
Fan Fist to begin the five season.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
Yeah, it's been crazy.

Speaker 4 (01:02):
It's been a whirlwind of like a year and a
half of just like everything that's happened, going three levels
in one year, and I've just been enjoying it, letting
God take the wheel and uh, let him control everything
and I'm just following his steps.

Speaker 5 (01:14):
How much that experience, you know, WX bringing up you
playing quarterback in high school benefits you for your baseball
career in terms of taking that athletic ability and bringing
it over to here.

Speaker 4 (01:25):
I definitely think it allows me to slow the game
down in a way, for like when the situation is big,
like everything.

Speaker 2 (01:32):
Kind of slows down for me.

Speaker 4 (01:35):
It just like allows me to just be more control
of the moment, knowing what to do, having control of
like what I'm supposed to do, when to think about everything.

Speaker 1 (01:43):
So it's like very slow in those kind of moments.

Speaker 5 (01:46):
Tougher scenario all out blitz or a live at bat
at this level, Uh.

Speaker 4 (01:54):
I had a first round draft pick as my right
tackle and a guy that's in Alabama as my left tackle.

Speaker 3 (02:00):
Shape, Yeah, a lot of a factory.

Speaker 1 (02:04):
Yeah, A full A full blitz was a little bit
easier picked up for me.

Speaker 6 (02:08):
Do you still fellow like you play a lot of
fantasy football. Do you still try to keep involved in
football or just watch a bunch.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
And yeah, more engrossed in baseball. I played fantasy football
this year, finished in third place.

Speaker 6 (02:19):
Okay, he said he's trying to get a league going,
so talk to him.

Speaker 2 (02:23):
Yeah, probably, I was. I was struggling. I was at
the bottom for a while and then which wants to
talk to you? Then? Yeah?

Speaker 4 (02:30):
So, but I watched a lot of baseball, try to
see what the great guys do and just try to
think in their perspective of what's going on. And I
think that's what helps me get getting better at baseball,
just uh watching a lot and just uh thinking the
game out.

Speaker 1 (02:47):
What has your minor league path been like for you?

Speaker 3 (02:50):
You're drafted by this organization and you know, obviously you
kind of mentioned the three levels, the rapid rise, but
just the life of it. What's the minor league life
been like for you these last short period of time.

Speaker 1 (03:01):
It's it's been a lot of fun, a lot of traveling.
Last year.

Speaker 4 (03:04):
I think I went from the first week of the
season was in New York and the last week of
the regular season with the Sacramento.

Speaker 2 (03:10):
So uh Coast to coast. It was fun.

Speaker 4 (03:13):
A lot of travel, long bus rides, a lot of
video games, trying new food, trying to see new places.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
And it's been a blast.

Speaker 1 (03:21):
What were the challenges?

Speaker 3 (03:22):
Essentially, it feels like everything you did it's new these
three weeks or something, and then there's something new, and
then there's a new level or a bunch of guys
you've never seen before, new teammates. Was that kind of
the feeling of how it's kind of gone.

Speaker 4 (03:33):
Yeah, but staying grounded, having the support system I have
with my parents, family and friends and just all the guys.
They've been great for me. Just uh, everything's easy. Likely
bond and we have fun. We go out to eat.
I have my like little Call of Duty squad kind
of we played video games after the game and just

(03:55):
kind of keep things cool, mellow, and uh, I make
it more than what it is. Because if you're twenty
four to seven with baseball all day, you're gonna just
run yourself in the dirt because it's a hard enough
game as it is. And if you're thinking about the
whole time, like you're gonna you're gonna struggle.

Speaker 5 (04:12):
A couple of weeks, you guys are gonna head to
camp and you're gonna be in that clubhouse with the
major league club, But just are you kind of mentally
preparing yourself for all? Right? This is how I go
in there, this is what I do.

Speaker 4 (04:23):
I think it's more being myself, not making it more
than what it is. It's still baseball at the end
of the day. You got some Hall of Fame guys
in there, and so I'm just trying to pick their rain,
soak up information and just try to help myself get
better for the season.

Speaker 3 (04:36):
We talked to Hayton Wiznescu's from the area, Spencerraghetti from
the area. Obviously from the area. What were the Astros
to you growing up?

Speaker 4 (04:45):
It was like a little up and down because growing
up at the beginning we weren't very good, and then
once twenty fifteen came around, we started winning and we
haven't stopped. Said so, it's been great to see just
the constant growth in the team and where they want
to go and how important winning is to them, and

(05:05):
that's what's important to me.

Speaker 2 (05:06):
I like to win.

Speaker 4 (05:07):
I don't like to lose, and uh, it's just it's
been fun watching them win.

Speaker 2 (05:13):
I like that is that's the most important thing.

Speaker 3 (05:16):
Have you been with a couple of guys on this
same path that you've gotten close to that you're obviously
trying to get to the same place.

Speaker 4 (05:22):
Yeah, Zach Dison, Zel Shay Wickcombe. I was with them
a lot during spring training and then during the season
Pass Verres, Jarren Williams, Ryan Johnson, those guys have been
with a lot, just because they're infielders and we're worth
each other so much. We're around each other all day,
so just picking their brains, learning from them and trying

(05:42):
to get better in the same likewise. So I think
it's just been a constant of evolution of just like
working to get better every day.

Speaker 5 (05:50):
If I'm not mistaken, you were born in North Carolina.
When did y'all move here?

Speaker 2 (05:53):
Moved here when I was eight.

Speaker 5 (05:55):
Okay, so you've been here for for most of your life.
But you know, Wex's probably earlier. We were talking with
Spencer Righetty. I mean, the amount of Houston area guys
that are in that clubhouse. Did you have much of
a crossover with those guys either through select or playing
against Sinco Ranch or any of these schools.

Speaker 4 (06:12):
Those guys, they were a couple of years older, than me,
But I work out with Hayden during the offseason and
then Spencer works out at the other silly, but when
I come here to work out, they're always there.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
So it's cool to see.

Speaker 6 (06:24):
What about pressure, and because you're some where you were drafted,
the expectation level and getting moved up like you you
have been, has that been something that you kind of
just keep away and you try not to think about
as far as I mean the expectations that can fall
on your shoulders, especially because the pharmacistem not thought of
as one of the top in baseball and.

Speaker 5 (06:43):
You being one of the crown jewels of that.

Speaker 4 (06:46):
I think it all comes down to like support system
and the people you have around you, and if they're
just trying to help you get better every day, then
that's the most important thing. Like it's about the journey,
not the not the end that so like it's gonna
be ebbs and flows, But if you're trying to do
like just work in the right direction every day, you

(07:06):
kind of.

Speaker 2 (07:07):
Really don't think about it.

Speaker 4 (07:08):
Sometimes it gets hard, gets a little frustrating, but that
that's the game. Like if you don't have pressure, then
like there's no reason of really doing what you're what
you want to do, like if it if it doesn't
mean anything, then like everybody like would do.

Speaker 6 (07:22):
It, especially in a game like baseball where you are
gonna fail so much. It's it's just interesting to me.
It sounds like you're you're approaching it the right way.

Speaker 3 (07:31):
Do you have you paid a whole lot of attention
to the guys before you hear how Carlos Korea plays
short stop, how Jeremy Payannea plays short stop, even bregnant.
It's just some of the maybe even the techniques of
how they go about positioning, footwork, all those things.

Speaker 4 (07:46):
For sure, you're talking about gold glovers, Platinum glovers, guys
that want the World Series done on the biggest stage.
So it's hard not to watch those guys like they've
been so successful in their career, so why not try
to learn from them to watch what they do?

Speaker 5 (07:59):
What? What is a goal you set out for this year?
I mean, do you do you feel like spending time
in this ballpark is within reach for you?

Speaker 2 (08:07):
I definitely say so.

Speaker 4 (08:09):
I really don't set goals for myself because for me,
kind of when I do it, I just put too
much expectation on things that shouldn't really be there.

Speaker 2 (08:19):
It's a kid's game.

Speaker 4 (08:20):
I try to go out and have fun and just
and play the game. And I think I'm talented enough
where it'll take care of itself and the work I
put in, the mental preparation I put in, and I
just think that God has a plan for me.

Speaker 2 (08:34):
I'm just letting letting him take the wheel.

Speaker 5 (08:35):
Have you always had that outlook or did you have
to to kind of develop that as you've gone through
your career.

Speaker 1 (08:41):
I think I kind of had it for a long time.

Speaker 2 (08:45):
My parents.

Speaker 4 (08:46):
My mom, she's a big goal setter, and she always
to have me try to set goals, and for me,
it wouldn't like really align because I just put so
much pressure and expectation on myself to do it, and
then I just started just like not really like I
cared so much that I didn't care. And when I
just went out and tried to play, to decide to

(09:06):
be the best team that I can, best leader I can,
And if I could do that and put take the
pressure off myself, then everything else takes care of itself.

Speaker 1 (09:14):
You just mentioned you know it's a kids game. I'm
playing a game. You feel like that's your on field attitude.

Speaker 3 (09:19):
You're out there to have fun. This is baseball. We
all need to have fun. Is that kind of how
you play?

Speaker 4 (09:23):
Yeah, have fun but dominate at the same time. And
that's that's what I kind of want to want to do.

Speaker 1 (09:27):
Do you feel like that spreads throughout the group you've
been playing with? I for sure think so. It's like
it's contagious.

Speaker 4 (09:33):
When you have the right habits and you go about
your your business the right way, people follow along and
people see what you do, like every everybody's watching somebody
Like nobody's work goes unnoticed. And so when you do
the right things consistently, people will follow and when you
have the right attitude about it, good things happen.

Speaker 2 (09:55):
More so than no.

Speaker 1 (09:56):
Are your teammates or coaches calling you Bryce be mad?

Speaker 2 (10:00):
Is there a nickname?

Speaker 4 (10:01):
Uh, it's like Bryce uh be my high my college
humans they call me Breeze.

Speaker 2 (10:07):
But yeah, that's kind of gone raise. I like that.

Speaker 6 (10:09):
Yeah, okay, Well Bryce Matthews Breeze himself.

Speaker 5 (10:14):
We do appreciate the time.

Speaker 1 (10:16):
He said that in the past.

Speaker 2 (10:17):
Oh, I'm sorry, I'm sorry.

Speaker 5 (10:18):
That's good that you can't you can't give yourself in Yeah,
it's gotta happen organic.

Speaker 6 (10:24):
Yeah, we'll see what happens plenty of time. I'm sure
at the major league level we'll come up with something.
Appreciate the time and uh wishing you all the all
the best.

Speaker 5 (10:31):
In the future.

Speaker 2 (10:32):
Thank you guys, I appreciate it.

Speaker 6 (10:33):
