Speaker 1 (00:00):
Back here at Yes, it is weird to say dyke
in park with me, Ross viy Reale, Dan Matthews, Adam Wexer,
now joined by the man himself, Hunter Brown.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Let's hear it for Hunter Brown.
Speaker 1 (00:13):
Let's hear it Astros fan Fest special here on Sports
Talk seven.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
Hunty Hunter, how you feeling. How's your off season? It
was good?
Speaker 3 (00:19):
Yeah, it was uh you know, it was too long,
you know, try and shorten that out next year, and uh, yeah,
I got you.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
So, but it was good. It was good. Thanks for asking.
You're started the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
Well, let's actually let's just take when you look back
at the entire year, what you were able to do
and how you turned your season around. What was that
like for you when the season ended unfortunately prematurely as
you mentioned, but you reflect back on your year and
the growth that you were able to show on the mountains.
Speaker 3 (00:46):
Yeah, you know, I was proud of the way I
handled certain things. You know, the starts of my season
was was not how I drew it up.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
But you know, it's a long seas you play one
hundred sixty two games, you know, as as.
Speaker 3 (00:59):
Both individually and as a team, you know, battled got
better you know, was able to win the division, do
some good things, and you know, just just didn't go
our way with you in there.
Speaker 4 (01:11):
Spent a few minutes with Spencer Araghetti earlier this year,
Earlier this afternoon.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
He was talking about how his season.
Speaker 4 (01:17):
Went, his first go around, some of the things, the
ups and downs, and he brought up his appearance against
the Royals where everything's fine and then couldn't get anybody out,
couldn't do anything. And he brought it up later about
learning things from the other guys on the staff, and
you brought up your start to the season. There was
a day with Kansas City similarly. Do you even think
about what it means to him for you to talk
to him about it or vice versa, as you're on
(01:38):
the same team trying to get to the same part
of your the same place, and how that can help
each other.
Speaker 3 (01:43):
Yeah, I mean, I think you know that's that's one
of the beautiful things about baseball.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
You know, you're around such great talent.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
You know you can go talk to hitters, you got coaches,
you got so many people in the experience, you know,
other pitchers and people that are.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
Doing doing the same thing that you're doing.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
In their own way, so you know, to bounce ideas
off off each other. You know, for Spencer, I had
my rookie year the year before, so you know some
of the things that that I kind of went through
and learned and tried to talk to him about. You know,
you can't really put it into words as well as
you know once you live it.
Speaker 2 (02:16):
So you know, Spencer I thought, had a great year.
Speaker 3 (02:21):
You know, our whole staff really, Blanco was was excellent framber.
Speaker 2 (02:25):
You know, I like where we're at.
Speaker 5 (02:27):
So how gratifying was it too to be able to
make those adjustments and then see the immediate results, to
kind of fight through those early struggles.
Speaker 3 (02:35):
Yeah, I mean I think you know, if you look
at any any point in my entire career, I had
to do that, whether it was you know, all the
way back to college or or in minor league baseball too.
Speaker 2 (02:46):
You know, that's how it's gonna be.
Speaker 3 (02:47):
The game changes so much, everybody's everybody's adapt and making
quick on the fly changes. And you know, like I said,
the talent's just so good, so you know, you really
you got no choice otherwise you might you might be
out of the game.
Speaker 5 (03:00):
So when adding a pitch, sure you know, kind of
tweaking things a little bit. I mean, is that easier
said than done in mid season? I mean a lot
of times it seems like that's got to be done
kind of in the lab.
Speaker 2 (03:13):
But you know, after the season, yeah.
Speaker 3 (03:14):
I mean kind of Luckily for me, I really had
nothing to lose because it just wasn't going well at all,
so was able to just kind of go for it,
you know, whereas like maybe over the offseason you might
get too too in depth trying to figure certain things out,
get everything perfect.
Speaker 2 (03:30):
You know, it's at the point.
Speaker 3 (03:31):
Where it was like, you know, something's got to give here,
I got to make a change, so just kind of
gotta go for it, gred bull by the horns and
see what happens.
Speaker 1 (03:38):
That's what Spencer Agetty basically said, was like he was
impressed the way that you said, you know what, I'm
just gonna go for it.
Speaker 2 (03:44):
Is that how you felt it was to you in.
Speaker 1 (03:46):
Your mind to where he said, you know what, I'm
just gonna go after these guys you change some things up,
and they just had.
Speaker 2 (03:50):
Full confidence in yourself from that point.
Speaker 3 (03:52):
Yeah, I mean I had success in the big leagues before,
so you know, That was the biggest question to myself.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
I was like, all right, what's going on here?
Speaker 3 (04:01):
Why all of a sudden is it uh not the
result that I'm looking for. So go around at the clubhouse,
you know, and see and then yeah, like.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
Like you said, pregnant was helpful.
Speaker 3 (04:12):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, Mauricio Dubon was actually a huge factor
in that.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
You know, guys I get to see, uh, like Dubon and.
Speaker 3 (04:20):
Center field or Jake Myers, those guys get to see,
you know, a great angle of what what my stuff's doing.
So talking to them, you know, had Hall of Famer
in Verlander, you know, L two A. Those are great
guys to lean on and and see what they have
to say. And but yeah, you really just got to
you got to go for some things sometimes, you know,
(04:40):
it's it's trying to do the same thing, and like
being redundant with it and just expecting things to change
is really really not the best recipe for success.
Speaker 4 (04:49):
Hunter Brown joining us here live from Astro's fan fest
here at Dyke Into Park on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
Is something as simple as you walk.
Speaker 4 (04:56):
Off the mount after a strikeout, a good pitch, something nasty,
and you just get a high five from Bregman or
high five from JV and it means a lot.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
Yeah, I mean I think, you know, being teammates and
friends and and creating that camaraderie goes a long way.
Speaker 4 (05:11):
You know, you mentioned you like where you're at when
you ran through Fromber Blanco Spencer yourself.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
A lot of things have changed with the team. They
always do.
Speaker 4 (05:21):
That's the front potentially the front four of a rotation,
you know, kind of walking through each of what those
pitchers does.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
Do you envision it as being pretty tough to hit?
Speaker 3 (05:30):
Yeah, I mean we got nasty stuff all across the board,
you know, Luis Garcia, you know, making his way back,
Christian Hobvier, like, you know, we got we got a
lot of good arms with a lot of talent and
and just really fun guys will watch too, So I know,
I know we're gonna be tough and we're gonna be
working hard and see what we can do this year.
Speaker 4 (05:50):
Fun guys to watch, but they're different, fun, right, Like,
how fun is it watching Fromber versus fun watching Spencer
because they are very different.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
That's right.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
Bramber makes it look looked very easy, like he told
the guy to hit the ground ball in the second
base and he did. And then Spencer, it's like he
he got the guy to commit to swinging before he
throws it in. The left handed batters backs to it
right and you know, so it it.
Speaker 2 (06:12):
It is interesting and and get to see all the
different types of pitches in arsenals.
Speaker 5 (06:17):
Hunter Ross mentioned Alex Bregman, and you were on the
record last year of talking about how instrumental he was
in helping you make some of those adjustments.
Speaker 2 (06:26):
I mean, I'm.
Speaker 5 (06:26):
Sure you probably heard the rumors and everything that's out there.
But you know, as I've asked somebody earlier, what would
it mean to see you guys get to West Palm
Beach and number two is in that clubhouse?
Speaker 3 (06:36):
Yeah, I mean, you know, Bretty's a great leader, great
baseball player, is a great person too. You know, somebody
that I consider a good friend of mine. So you know, personally,
I would love that, but uh, that's that's over my
my expertise, but I would be I would be pleasantly
(06:57):
surprised to see him.
Speaker 5 (06:58):
And and that's you know, as you say that, I
mean I'm reading you know, Jose is talking with some
of the media upstairs, and you know, being asked about
that idea moved to the outfield. He said, Yeah, if
it means he's back here, I'm doing it.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (07:10):
Well, you know, Twove is a great player that can
probably do anything on the baseball field that you tell him.
Speaker 2 (07:17):
So if he says that that's that's something that he'd
be able to do, I believe.
Speaker 4 (07:21):
So.
Speaker 1 (07:21):
Now you've had this great year that you had, especially
the second half of the season, and as you know,
one of the things that kind of separates good from
the great is keeping it up again, doing it again.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
What has that been like for you.
Speaker 1 (07:31):
Mentally preparing this offseason to kind of just keep this
train rolling with that great pitching you've been doing.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
Yeah, you try to build off the good things, you know,
put the bad ones to rest.
Speaker 2 (07:43):
You know, you're gonna make a lot of hopefully make
a lot of audience. You know, have thirty starts or so.
Speaker 5 (07:49):
You know.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
I was talking to John Smoltze at one time and
he was saying, you know, you probably have ten really
good ones, ten poor ones, and ten just mediocre ones.
But if you can make those those pretty bad ones
mediocre and the media ogre ones pretty darn good, then
you know you'll find yourself in a good spot. So
that's that's definitely the mindset you try and take into
the season.
Speaker 4 (08:06):
Do you find it cool that you could just casually
say in a conversation, Yeah, I was talking to John Smoltz.
Speaker 3 (08:11):
Yeah, you know, baseball world is a small world and
it's full of great guys.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
So yeah, it's it is cool that. I mean, Hall
of Famer, you know, it's John Smoltz.
Speaker 4 (08:19):
I was talking to you just before we started the
interview and asking you how Houstonian Hunter Brown enjoyed snow day.
Speaker 2 (08:27):
Yeah, it's pretty nice, right, Yeah.
Speaker 3 (08:28):
I didn't leave my house, came back from Michigan, was
hoping to get in some good sunshine weather.
Speaker 2 (08:33):
And I should have brought my sleds with me. But
I'm sure. I'm sure all the kids around here had
a great time.
Speaker 5 (08:40):
You know, eight to f grading wise, how do you
feel like people who are not used to those elements
handled Tuesday afternoon?
Speaker 3 (08:48):
Well, I could see the freeway from my apartment, and
I will say I was.
Speaker 2 (08:52):
I was concerned.
Speaker 3 (08:57):
Yeah, it's I didn't hear any any terri horrific news,
So that's good.
Speaker 2 (09:01):
That's good.
Speaker 4 (09:02):
There.
Speaker 1 (09:02):
I go, Header Brown with this year on Sports Talk
seven ninety. So also a lot of indings pitch for
you physically about building up and getting ready to go
and ready for the next year. How's that been going
for you, and and kind of things that you're fine
tuning and and learning as you've gone along in your
career to get ready for another season.
Speaker 2 (09:19):
Yeah. I think my rookie year, you know, I wasn't
my routine. I didn't. I didn't change it up in
this seasons as well as I probably should have.
Speaker 3 (09:28):
You know, I still was basically lifting and doing things,
you know, running.
Speaker 2 (09:33):
Wise and and things like that that I was doing.
Speaker 3 (09:35):
In April all the way into August and September, you know,
whereas last year I was like, Okay, I know what
I'm gonna be, feeling like I need to start making
adjustments earlier in the season, and I thought it really
translated well for me. I felt like my vila was good.
Speaker 2 (09:48):
At the end of the year.
Speaker 3 (09:49):
I felt I felt strong, and I was I was
able to take the ball every five days.
Speaker 4 (09:53):
So how'd you feel like it was working with your
catchers last year, working with Victor, working with Jiner, and
how things developed between all of you.
Speaker 3 (10:01):
Yeah, I've been I've been working with Yiner for for
years now, you know.
Speaker 2 (10:05):
All the way back to the minor league. So you know,
i'd like, I'd like to think.
Speaker 3 (10:09):
Me and him are just pretty in sync on on
the same page. But you know, Victor is a very
smart catcher. He knows his pitcher as well. He's a
guy that can really see, you know, on on a
day to day outing basis on like what your stuff's doing.
So you know he's he's ready to adjust on the
fly and talk to you about it in between innings
and things like that.
Speaker 2 (10:29):
You know, Yea in the same way. But you know,
I thought working with Victor and Yeiner was great last year.
We'll leave you with this on Jiner.
Speaker 4 (10:36):
Are you ready to rubber stamp him exploding offensively this year?
Speaker 3 (10:40):
I would say last year was a pretty exploding offensive year.
You know, you hit three hundred and I don't know
if twenty helmers or so. Like.
Speaker 2 (10:47):
Yeah, I mean he's a fantastic hitter.
Speaker 3 (10:50):
I knew that when we played in Triple A together
and I didn't expect anything else, to be honest.
Speaker 2 (10:55):
What about as a catcher, how have you seen him grow? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (10:57):
I mean he the way that he does his homework
and handles the stat you know. I know that's a
difficult job with all the different you know, pitch shapes
and arm angles and this, and then what guys like
visually back there, and I think just with the experience,
he's he's just getting better and better.
Speaker 2 (11:13):
All right, Hunter, Bro, You're good, all right, And that's it.
Speaker 1 (11:16):
Hun, We've done with you looking out all right, everybody here,
it's thanks special.
Speaker 2 (11:25):
Thanks so much for the time. We do appreciate you
making it. And we'll talk to you in westbound. Sounds good.
See you all right there you go, Hunter Brown of
your Houston astros.
Speaker 1 (11:33):
