Kicking into Week 12 of the NFL now, following Houston's victory over the Titans on Sunday, the Texans move along quite swiftly as they prepare to take on Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills in a Thursday night thriller on Amazon Prime. With the week speeding up typically faster than normal and weighing the likelihood of C.J. Stroud to sit out another week still under concussion protocol, amongst a few others that may be inactive, Dan and Chris take a moment to preview Thursday's kickoff and pose: Can Davis Mills push the Texans to a win over Josh and the Bills?

Speaker 1 (00:00):
That is exactly what Jamiko Ryans had to say yesterday
along with other things. But with that we say away
we go in good morning here on the seven ninety
morning show Sports Talk seven ninety, Dan Matthews, Chris Gordy, Tripoli,
Emmanuel Elmore hanging out with you. As the Texans have
a short week, they're gonna be on the practice field today.

(00:22):
There were one full day of practice, which still probably
will be treated like a Thursday usually is, as they've
got the short week this week and get the bills
on Thursday night. But the moral of the story is,
Chris Gordy, it seems like we are trending towards a
night of number fifteen versus number ten, as in Davis

(00:47):
Mills getting to start again for the Texans.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
Yeah, I saw that that you know, injury report came
out last night, and you know one encouraging thing, Jay
Jalen Petrie is is not out. He was limited, so
that speaks well for him and his return. But yeah,
one of the two names on the out list was

(01:10):
that of mister C. J.

Speaker 1 (01:14):
Stroud.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
So we said it Monday was gonna be the big
one if he was. If he was not back to
least limited that that was not gonna bode well for
a Thursday night early game, So yeah, did not participate.
Linebacker Jamal Hill, Quarterback c J. Stroud still out with
the concussion. And this is the other names to keep
an eye on as he's Al Shaier limited, Will Anderson limited,

(01:38):
de Nico Autry limited, Nico Collins, Titus Howard, Jalen Petrie,
Dalton Schultz against. Some of those could just be, you
know whatever, veteran days. We're just gonna you know, short week,
you don't have to practice Monday, whatever.

Speaker 1 (01:52):
But c J.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
Stroud is definitely the one that to that that we
were keeping eye on. So he is out most likely
on Thursday. And it is another Davis Mills game, and
Davis Mills we trust. Look, we got a lean on
Davis Mills to get a win against Jacksonville, Okay, we
got a lean on Davis Mills to get a win
against Tennessee.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
Okay.

Speaker 2 (02:14):
Having Davis Mills go toe to toe with Josh Allen,
the freaking MVP and you know, super badass, That's that's
a tough ask.

Speaker 1 (02:23):
Now, It's it's definitely seeming like it would be a
tall order for this one. But I mean today, I
guess is the absolute just last call there that if
you don't see CJ. Shroud out there, it's not happening.
He's he's not playing. Jalen Petrie though, that does give
you a little bit of confidence because I mean, then

(02:44):
do you just try to make this into as much
of a bang them up and play in a phone
booth as much as you can, although with this Texans
offensive line, that does not seem like that would be
a very wise move for them.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
Yeah, again, where today will be the picture will get
a little bit clearer on some of these guys, you know,
like I said, particularly Jalen Petrie, I'll shy here. You know,
Titus Howard got banged up in the game. You know,
I guess it's good to be's listed as as limited

(03:18):
and not did not participate. And then you know, the
the other part of here is full participation. Remember Davis Mills,
they were they were saying he was a little bit
banged up with the elbow. He he was full participant
yesterday tight end Kate Stover was full participant. And then
Kaymi fairbair back yesterday full participant.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
So you get your kicker back. So that's good.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
But yeah, certainly today we will be watching those those
guys from from Nico Collins to Titus Howard Jalen Petrie
and seeing what their status is.

Speaker 1 (03:49):
Don't over don't you know, don't don't overstate the return
of Kate Stover either, because I mean you've been having
to use Blake, you know, Blake Ferguson, Blake Fisher as
much as possible, as almost like a second blocking tight
end out there, and now, I mean, could you maybe
go three tights in this situation. Now you don't see

(04:12):
that very often unless it's a goal line situation, but
in terms of being able to provide some support to
this offensive line and blocking, I mean that's one of
the things that Cat Stover is incredibly good at, being
a former defensive lineman himself and a guy that seemingly
likes to do that from everything we've heard about him
when he's not been banged up.

Speaker 2 (04:32):
And Harrison Bryant, the FAU kid, he had been banged up,
and you know, you really start to get thin. I
think Wex was talking about last week going into Sunday,
I think you only had two tight ends. And you
know that's what Dalton Schultzer had been banged up in
recent weeks playing, so it was good he finally found
the end zone. That's that's good for Dalton Schultz. He's

(04:54):
you know, you paid him a lot of money to
come back and be here with you, So the hope
is he can continue to contribute. But yeah, but I
just don't know. You know, the big question that that
everybody will be asking around town is can you beat
the Buffalo Bills with Davis Mills? And I hate to
put it all on him, but let's be real, Dan,
They're not gonna roll out of bed tomorrow and suddenly

(05:14):
find a run game.

Speaker 1 (05:16):
So it's it.

Speaker 2 (05:16):
It falls on him, and the defense is gonna have
to be special. They're gonna have to be do what
they've done all season and pull pull this game, like
we said with Denver, like drag into the dirt and
make this a dirty game. But yeah, I mean it's
it's it's gonna be difficult.

Speaker 1 (05:35):
Well, it's gonna be difficult from the standpoint of you
know what you're talking about right there with the defense.
I mean, we've been asking him for that for the
last few weeks with CJ being out with a concussion
and I mean, you know, just trying to do everything
you can in terms of you know, being able to
see if you can force a turnover, see if you

(05:56):
can you know, be able to force a defensive score,
any of the those things. Because I mean the last
time he played against Josh Allen, that's what you were
able to do. I mean, you were able to have
him play one of the worst games he ever had
during his career here. I mean he almost made him
look like the some of all fears Josh Allen that
when they drafted him where people were like, you kidding me,
this Guy's not gonna work. What are you thinking here?

(06:19):
How do you think this is gonna work?

Speaker 2 (06:21):
Yeah? I thought I I was on the I was
on the train if I thought Josh Allen was a
bit overrated. And yeah, I mean I'm I hate to
be hater on small school guy, but yeah, Wyoming, I'm like,
you know, we saw it with with Joe Flacco out
of Delaware and a few other guys. But yeah, I

(06:41):
just I knew they liked his athleticism, but I didn't
like going through the football coming out out of college.
And you know, his rookie year was was pretty good.
Wasn't that the year the Texans beat him in the
playoffs his rookie season.

Speaker 1 (06:55):
Anyway, it was either his rookie year or his second season.
It was early on in his career.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
But regarding Wardless, he is he has turned into this
freak athlete quarterback that is in the MVP discussion every
single year. His legs are as dangerous as his arm.
You know, when we're talking the other day about he's
passing Cam Newton in certain categories of running, you know,
running quarterbacks, it's it's insane.

Speaker 1 (07:21):
But he's fast, man.

Speaker 2 (07:22):
He's fastest, got over what three hundred and fifty yards
rushing this year, ten rushing touchdowns to go with his
eighteen passing touchdowns, only been sacked twenty times on the year.

Speaker 1 (07:33):
He is.

Speaker 2 (07:34):
He is difficult to bring down. And then you combine
it with James Cook, who's really emerged the last couple
of years. Is a really good running back. I would
eventually say, a top ten running back in this league
out of out of Georgia. And he's at nine to
sixty eight right now. So he's on the cusp of
hitting a thousand yards already as a as a running back.
And then you know the dynamic they you know, they

(07:56):
got rid of Stefan Diggs. They've kind of they overturned
this receiving or the last couple of years and kind
of gone with some young guys. Kean Coleman out of Florida,
Stay and Khalil Shakir had kind of become their guys,
and then Dalton Kincaid at tight end has kind of emerged,
so on top of Dawson Knox, Like, they've got a
couple of good tight ends there, but he's he's just

(08:19):
so dangerous in the different things he presents. So it's
really tough. But it's tough to do this on a
short week game plan for a really good team. You
wish you could have flipped it. You wish you could
have had the full week to prepare for Buffalo and
the short week for Tennessee. Okay, I think you would
have been fine that way. This one makes it a
little bit harder.

Speaker 1 (08:36):
Well, but I mean, here's the thing, and I'm sure
probably if you ask Demiko Ryans, he's gonna tell you
the same thing. They gotta do the same thing. But
I mean, I think the difference is here with that
is the caveat that you can then come back to
Demiico with is, Yeah, you don't have Josh Allen like
they they do. You have a guy that you think
can be to that level, and I mean at times

(08:56):
has been inconsistent and CJ. Stroud. But the problem is,
well you you're probably not gonna have him. So I mean,
that's that's a massive issue for you. Yeah, so it
is what it is, man. And look, I had somebody
asked this to me yesterday. What if Davis Mills is

(09:16):
great and you beat Buffalo, what do you do when
CJ comes back? I said, CJ. Stroud takes back over
that quarterback? What are you talking about?

Speaker 2 (09:24):
But people get so hung up on that kind of
crap where it's like, yeah, look, Davis Mills comes in,
it helps you beat Buffalo. He did his job as
the backup quarterback. None of this like this isn't college
where oh the backup's just as good as a starter.
No he's not. He's not CJ.

Speaker 1 (09:39):
Stroud.

Speaker 2 (09:40):
But if he's good enough on Thursday night and plays
his ass off, great, you're gonna pat him on the
back and say, dude, thank you so much, we really
needed you.

Speaker 1 (09:47):
That is the best You go take a seat because
we got CJ back. So yeah, yeah, I mean this
isn't like remember a couple of years ago when jose
L Tuve had the broken thumb and then you had
Mauricio Dubond, like say, Maurisio who did a good job
while you know, Al Tuvey was out, But to say
at like three ten during that stretch and you're like,

(10:07):
oh my god, can't take this guy out of the lineup.
Dusty Baker to have been like, well, I mean I
might not take him out of the lineup, but I'm
not playing him at second base. Of course, I'm playing
number twenty seven right there, because yeah, you know, hitting
three ten, you know that guy's done that a few
times in his career. So I don't want to have
that guy out. I want to make sure that that
guy is back. So yes, this is not a Alex

(10:30):
Smith Colin Kaepernick situation, even kind of what we're seeing
in Arizona right now with Kyler Murray where it's yeah,
you're hurt, we're putting you on ir because we want
to play that guy. We want to play Jacobe Brizzette
right now, like you, that's that's not the situation here.

Speaker 2 (10:45):
Well, what I've liked is, you know, David Spills has
looked pretty good with the receivers. I mean like he's
he seems to have a little bit of of timing
down with some of those guys, and that's that's good
to see because you never know when the backup gets
in what what that's gonna look like.

Speaker 1 (11:01):
All right, so we got that, we got even you know,
the college coaching carousel in football is starting to make
a little bit of a turn, which is nice because
we got one spot filled and maybe another one on
the way. We will discuss that here as the show
goes along, but let's stay on the Texans here as
we get going here on a Tejano Tuesday seven one

(11:23):
three two one two five seven ninety against seven one
three two on two five seven ninety. For everything we
just said about Davis Mills, could it baby be? Could
it maybe be poetic justice if he's able to pull
it off on Thursday night, we'll discuss right here as
it is the seven ninety morning show here on again
at Tejano Tuesday, Sports Talk seven ninety

Now, Kristin Davis wants to connect with you, the fans, and share untold stories and all the behind the scenes. Together, with Kristin and special guests, what will begin with Sex and the City will evolve into talks about themes that are still so relevant today.
