Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back here to Astros Fan Fest live from dyke
In Park, right here on Sports Talk seven and your
home for Astros Baseball.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
Brian li Lima, Sean Salisbury.
Speaker 1 (00:08):
Now we are joined by Astro's skipper, the manager, Joe
A spotted Joe.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
We appreciate the time.
Speaker 3 (00:14):
Thank you.
Speaker 1 (00:15):
How's everything going, man, It's like we're just talking about
it is that time of the year.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
Man, It's time to go. It's go time.
Speaker 4 (00:20):
We're excited, the fans are excited, and you know, it's
baseball time. These players are can't wait to get on
the field, get ready for another successful season.
Speaker 3 (00:29):
Hey, Joe, what do you when when the season ends?
Speaker 5 (00:32):
How long does it fester on you before you go,
before you get rid of it?
Speaker 4 (00:37):
You know what, it takes me. It takes me a
couple of days. It takes me a couple of days.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
You know.
Speaker 4 (00:41):
You try to turn the page as fast as you know,
quick as possible, and trying to you know, take your
baseball manager hat off and become you know, become the
father and the husband and.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
Forget about this season. But it takes you takes you
a while.
Speaker 4 (00:55):
But you know, once I do, uh, and then all
of a sudden, after right out through Christmas, it's time
to go. You start, you know, making some phone calls
through the coaches, You start thinking about screen training, You
start coming into the office three or four times a week,
and now you start thinking about the roster lineups, and
all of a sudden you find yourself and the fan fest.
You're thinking about it's time to go and give this
fans whether they deserve another championship.
Speaker 1 (01:17):
Yeah, and you talk about roster and lineups and things
like that.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
One thing that I've.
Speaker 1 (01:23):
Been wanting to ask you for a while now, last
year you had one hundred and forty seven different starting lineups.
Obviously you didn't have Kyle Tucker for a good majority
of the season with the shin fracture.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
You didn't have Jose Bray.
Speaker 1 (01:37):
You didn't work out unfortunately, So you had to kind
of pivot around that. Just going into this season, trying
to maneuver pieces around what could that look like. Could
we see it to where it's that many again the
season or does.
Speaker 4 (01:52):
It just go as just as needed, you know what,
you hope not to make that many changes. I think
the guys likes ability to like coming to the ballpark
and knowing where they're going to hit, and you want
to give that uh that feel that you know, this
is your spot, so they.
Speaker 3 (02:07):
Don't even have to check correct card right right.
Speaker 2 (02:09):
And I think there's a couple of guys that.
Speaker 4 (02:11):
You know, kind of go to the ballpark and they
know they're going to be in the top three uh spots.
But you know, on the performance last year, some injuries,
so you know, we have to shuffle some things around.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
But I think right now where we stand.
Speaker 4 (02:23):
I think the first five six guys looks like he's
going to be uh, you know, like a you know,
a steady diet of you know, a force and speed,
and so.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
I'm excited about it.
Speaker 4 (02:34):
We we do need some guys to step up and
produce like we've seen some guys in the past. Uh.
If we could get some of that production down in
the bottom of the order.
Speaker 2 (02:42):
I think we could, you know, we could score more
runs and.
Speaker 4 (02:44):
Give guys some more opportunities to probably give some guys
some rest and and and and my newer of things differently.
But you know, right now, as we stand on I'm
excited about what the future holds.
Speaker 3 (02:54):
Do you last year, this team we've been so spoiled.
Speaker 5 (02:57):
You we have and anytime as a runner and scoring position, well,
of course as is gonna get him.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
The adjustment period of if you'd have.
Speaker 5 (03:04):
Told me going in last year that runners in scoring
position was going to be something that they didn't excel
like they always do. So the adjustment of that, I
would imagine that you expect to see a lot a
lot more production from that group this year.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (03:16):
Yeah, you know what I have to do with the
fact that we didn't get out.
Speaker 3 (03:19):
To a good story.
Speaker 4 (03:21):
There's some injuries on the pitchings that we found ourselves,
you know, a challenge the right down in the game early,
so our guys were trying to score three runs in
the first inning right away or trying to do a
little bit too much, and we got away from our approaches.
And that's something that we recognized and we did an
adjustment middle of the season.
Speaker 2 (03:39):
We turned things around.
Speaker 4 (03:41):
But going into the season, we recognize some things that
we could do better, and we're going to do those things.
And it starts with putting guys in a position to
succeed where they can feel comfortable in the lineup and
trying to trying to give trying to give them information
that they can digest and they could go out there
and perform.
Speaker 3 (03:57):
Do you Competition is a great thing.
Speaker 5 (03:59):
Yes, this outfield, there's gonna be some helified competition out there,
isn't there.
Speaker 4 (04:03):
Yeah, And I think competition creates an opportunity for us
to be more open byd they create more of a
successful organization. You know, I think we need to be
open minded, you know, create some opportunity. Some of those
kids in the minor leagues they want to see that.
You know what, there's an opportunity at the major league level.
The veteran players need some of that new blood to
come in the club, in the clubhouse and.
Speaker 2 (04:24):
Energize the group.
Speaker 4 (04:26):
So yeah, like you mentioned, in the outfield, there's some competition.
You know, my conversations in my office this year are going.
Speaker 2 (04:32):
To be a little bit different than they were last year.
Speaker 4 (04:35):
You know, I've brought guys in here, well, you are
the starting X, You're going to be the starting why
And now it's hey, listen, this competition you have, you're
going to have an opportunity to get every day at bats.
You're going to have opportunities to get every day at bats.
So it's going to be a different dynamic this spring training.
The first first week of games, I'm going to be
(04:55):
throwing out there some a lot of young kids. We
are going to be competing for spots, so our fans
will get an opportunity. Do you see, Hey, you know
I like you know, I like this guy, like how
that is working.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
So it's going to be a little bit different.
Speaker 1 (05:07):
So with it being different, and you talked about some
of the conversations are gonna be a little bit different.
You're going into year two as the manager for the
Houston Astros looking back on your first year, what is
going to be something that you you are going to
do a little bit different, Not the conversations, but just
maybe in your everyday uh you know, daily things with
(05:28):
the players, with your coaches. What can we see a
little bit different from Joe spot and year two as
a manager?
Speaker 2 (05:32):
You know what?
Speaker 4 (05:32):
So you know we're talking about you know how quickly
you turn the page in the off season, so you know,
when you sit down, you reflect on things that I
could have done better, things I could have done different.
Speaker 2 (05:42):
Things that I did well. I think self evaluation and
you need to do that as an individual.
Speaker 4 (05:48):
You know, my conversations with coaches, I always want to
hear what can we have done better to provide, you know,
a place where the players can be themselves and it
could be productive and it could be much better for
the whole dynamic of things. So there's some things there
that we could have done better, especially early.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
When things were not going well.
Speaker 4 (06:05):
One thing that I thought that we did really well,
and it's important for me to keep in mind, it's
just staying calm, let the process play out. Lean on
our players. These are the players that have been that
they know how to win. So you know, as the
leader of the group, you got to show some poise
and calmness about your daily routine.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
So they know, you know, our leader is calm, and.
Speaker 4 (06:24):
We know we know, we know we're going to do well.
So those are the things that I keep in mind.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
Also, you know, you.
Speaker 4 (06:30):
Know, talking more with our young players in the monor leagues.
I want to go and spend a little bit more
time to get to know them. Some of those kids
when they got to the big leagues, I wasn't very
familiar with those guys. So I think I will spend
a little bit more time evaluating our players, talking to
our minor league coaches. I'll be more of a relationship.
So when those kids get up here, have a better feel.
Our players have a better feel. So the dynamic in
(06:51):
the clubhouse doing spring training is going to be a
little bit different.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
We're going to do a little bit more of, you know, more.
Speaker 4 (06:56):
Exercises where we can have the players introduce themselves, get
to know them better.
Speaker 2 (07:01):
So that's some things that in school.
Speaker 5 (07:05):
Yeah, so I'm gonna tell us something about yourself and
your family. John, I'm gonna even dive a little deeper
in that with rookie basse. You know, rookie athletes from
a rookie year to their second year light switch. But
you know, there's things change. It doesn't matter if you're
Peyton Manning or if you're show Heyo Tani. Right there,
you learn something and you being a rook but you've
been around baseball so long and seen it. But from
(07:26):
your seat as a bench coach to the first step,
you know, the dugout set, it's different.
Speaker 3 (07:29):
It's short walk, but different.
Speaker 5 (07:31):
So for you, you mentioned things you're gonna do a
little different. Is there anything that you're like, this is
majorly different than I thought?
Speaker 4 (07:39):
Yeah, big time. You know, being a bench coach, now
you're the one who you know, making the decision. I'm
the one who's got to sit here and answer the
tough questions from media.
Speaker 2 (07:50):
And you know, the.
Speaker 4 (07:51):
Fans have expectations and it's me giving them, uh the
reasons why we not performing how we you know, got.
Speaker 2 (07:57):
To change things here and there. It's it's different, you know, accountability.
Speaker 4 (08:02):
Now all this sudden it hits you Ryan on the
forehead and and you've got to be the phase and
and and answer some tough questions.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
So it's different.
Speaker 4 (08:09):
But you know what, one thing that I did learn
that I can't change the way I am. I have
a relationship with these players, Stay true to my you know,
to who I am. I think the players expect me
to be the same person every single day. So I
make sure that I that I did those things well.
But you know, the seat, you know, you feel the heat,
no doubt about it. And and he's good heat because
(08:30):
we are a really good team. And it's a chair
that that you know, I always wanted to be to
have an opportunity to do it, and no better organization
than doing than in Houston Astrio.
Speaker 3 (08:41):
We've got a pretty good bobber at first base.
Speaker 5 (08:42):
Yeah, I do you know and for people, and we've
we spent a lot of time on our show after
this once once he signed here talking about him and
buddies of mine in Arizona saw him with Christian Walker.
For somebody who's never watched him play, scouting report on him.
Speaker 4 (08:56):
Yeah, you know, uh, you know one thing I don't
want to look on Christian is he's defense. This guy
is the best defender at first base and and he's important.
So three of our five starters right now going into
the season, they're ground ball pitchers, right and their right
handed pitchers, so there's gonna be a ton of lefties.
And knowing that there's someone over there that's a vacuum
(09:17):
is going to make all the plays ats.
Speaker 2 (09:19):
That's very important.
Speaker 4 (09:20):
Also, you know, he's he's his offense, he's approached.
Speaker 2 (09:23):
He's professional at bats.
Speaker 4 (09:25):
He's someone that's calm and can hit with people in
score and position. You know, we brought Tony Perrachica, a
new third base coach, and we lean on him heavily
to give us the good Scott and report on on Christian.
And you know, uh, we were all excited about all
the things that we've heard from Christian. You know, from
teammates to all the managers who've seen them. You know,
(09:47):
we got a chance to you know, we played three
games during the season, but we got to see him
in the Wall Series a couple of years back. So
there's a lot of things that he does well. There's
a lot of things that fit right into what we
do here in Houston.
Speaker 1 (09:57):
So you mentioned just a couple of minutes ago about
being the bench coach and then changing to now the manager.
You're the decision maker. Hit you right on the forehead.
You've seen so much here of being a part of
the Houston organization, Houst Nationals organization, and being in so
many high pressure situations even as.
Speaker 2 (10:14):
The bench coach.
Speaker 1 (10:14):
Now as the manager, there's gotta be times that you
look back as you're in your career as the bench
coach that help you now as the manager.
Speaker 4 (10:22):
Sure, and and I saw how other managers while I
was the bench coach, how they handle certain situation and
that's helped me, you know how the privilege to work
on the AJA and and and Dusty and you know,
those are guys that been around for a very long
time and they did things very well, doing some high
stress moments. You know, I have worked for guys like
Joeji already who handle pressure very well, and I picked
(10:45):
their brains and how they handle those things. So I
was I pay attention when I did the bench and
not only did my job, but I pay attention to
how they did it, how they treated players, how they
treated the media, how they treated the fans. All those
things are important because that players are are watching, and
you know, you gotta you gotta be tough skin in
(11:06):
this business to do to do the job that we do.
Speaker 3 (11:11):
Nobody as a manager, are you a social media guy?
Speaker 5 (11:15):
You know I was gonna ask you you wake up
and listen to our show for four hours morning.
Speaker 2 (11:24):
Listen.
Speaker 3 (11:25):
How do you read?
Speaker 2 (11:25):
I mean, guys, no, I can't.
Speaker 4 (11:29):
I I I did it my first year in New York.
Speaker 2 (11:32):
Yeah, the market to do it, and you're gonna do
it anywhere.
Speaker 4 (11:40):
That was the third base coach, right, So I'm like,
you know what, let's do this Twitter thing.
Speaker 2 (11:43):
I threw somebody out of home plate. That was the
end of this. Let's not do this Twitter thing it
never again.
Speaker 4 (11:50):
But what what I what I do is I I
tell omar my bench coach. I said, listen, if there's
something going on on Twitter, where uh is. It could
affect our club hower have something to do with our players,
anything that that can impact the culture in our in
our clubhouse, right, let me know, but people being critical
of me.
Speaker 2 (12:09):
I don't want to exactly. I don't want to know
anything other good stuff either because I don't want to know.
Speaker 3 (12:14):
I don't.
Speaker 2 (12:14):
I don't want to know.
Speaker 4 (12:15):
But it's something going on about our players. It can
affect our performance on the baseball field. Knock on my
door and show me the tweet anything else. Guys, I don't,
I don't, I don't.
Speaker 2 (12:25):
I really don't care.
Speaker 3 (12:26):
I want to know how you do this too. You know,
I'm one of those guys that.
Speaker 5 (12:30):
Put my emotions off my sleep, chicky boys like not
from social media, but like when an umpire makes a
bad call. There you are the absolute. You're a golden
because I'm looking to say, Joe.
Speaker 2 (12:40):
I wan't know how you I'd lead the league.
Speaker 3 (12:42):
I'd be Bobby Cox all over again.
Speaker 2 (12:44):
Yeah, how do you you know?
Speaker 3 (12:45):
There's that fine line.
Speaker 2 (12:46):
About that might change this? Okay, Okay, so that might change. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (12:51):
Being composed is one thing, but there's got to be
a time when you say enough.
Speaker 4 (12:55):
I need to get objected to there, right, and there
was moments like that didn't happened this season, but you know,
it gets to a point where you know, I'm I
buy my tongue and I'm like, I should not be.
Speaker 2 (13:07):
Buying my tongue as.
Speaker 4 (13:08):
So much because there's calls that you know happened. You know,
we went to a stretch last last season where we
had this same cup of umpires and I felt like
if it happened over and over again, We're playing meaningful
games in September and it's you know, but yes, and
it gets to a point where you you don't get fined.
Speaker 2 (13:31):
You know, but it might that might change.
Speaker 1 (13:33):
So you know, your first career ejects as as ejection
as a manager, it was.
Speaker 2 (13:38):
Kind of lackluster. I'm not gonna know, Like it was
very quiet. Yea.
Speaker 3 (13:42):
I couldn't believe it got the heat.
Speaker 1 (13:43):
I know, we talked about him like, I didn't even
realize it got tossed.
Speaker 2 (13:47):
Did an your buddies give you any any flack about it?
Come on, yeh, lost man, they did?
Speaker 4 (13:55):
You know, it started, it started in between in between
the innings. But then once I got out there, Yeah,
you know what for me it was, it was deserving
because he made he had home played in Kansas City
the first week of the season, and I let him
know that I wasn't happy with certain calls in that series.
Speaker 2 (14:13):
And it was quick ejection.
Speaker 4 (14:15):
But but you're right, and I did get some text
menas from dude.
Speaker 2 (14:18):
That's good fun.
Speaker 4 (14:19):
But you gotta, you gotta if you want to pay
it fine, make it.
Speaker 5 (14:21):
Make it work, he said the very first I said,
I'm getting my money by paying for the team party
for the Major League bation.
Speaker 3 (14:29):
I'm getting my money.
Speaker 4 (14:30):
And you know, usually the players pay for it. Anyway,
Joe would pick up the year fine.
Speaker 1 (14:35):
Manager Joe a while of joining us for a couple
more minutes here on Sports Talk seven ninety, I got
to ask you about jose Al TV, and I'm not
gonna Sean and I probably.
Speaker 3 (14:43):
We just want to know if he's playing left fields.
Speaker 1 (14:45):
You know, I just think it's it's I want to
take a little bit deeper than that. I mean, obviously,
Alex Bregman, he's still a free agent. Okay, where he goes,
we don't know. But for Josel Tu to come out
and say he said it today, if it means bringing
Bregman back here, I will go play left field. Speaks volumes,
and we know what kind of player and teammate and
and man he is. But just from your perspective as
the manager for this team, can you just tell us
(15:07):
a little bit about what you think about jose al Tuve?
Speaker 2 (15:09):
Well he that that sets it all.
Speaker 4 (15:11):
You know, this is a guy that a Hall of
Fame player that you know, once he's in his career
in Houston, he wants to.
Speaker 2 (15:20):
Finish his career in a winning club.
Speaker 4 (15:22):
So if he takes he takes him him to go
to left field, go to center field, go in the
outfield to accommodate one of the one of the best
players in the league in Alex Begman and winner. Uh,
not only on the field, but in the clubhouse, Josey
will go to left field. And you know, and we
have talked about it, you know, and Hosey is willing
to do that if he gets to a point when
we're going to bring someone on Alex Begman on the
(15:43):
field back to back on the team. So uh, you know,
there's no secrets and and hose is all in and
you know, and I'm all in about the idea. But
if we do that, obviously Alex needs to sign with
with the club and then we'll sit down and then
you know, correct and then we'll and then we'll figure
it out.
Speaker 2 (16:02):
But but you know, but there's no.
Speaker 5 (16:03):
Well, sure makes it easy for your versatility, absolutely, because
it's not like, you know, he's going to be the
every day left you'll know, you know, he'll find himself
playing second base.
Speaker 4 (16:12):
Also, But at least he gives an opportunity for us
to move pieces around and keep our lineup flexible and
you know and competitive for every single day.
Speaker 3 (16:20):
Go ahead.
Speaker 2 (16:20):
I was just saying, it's what you're gonna do. Anyways.
Speaker 1 (16:22):
I feel like with the way the lineup is constructed
right now, you're still gonna.
Speaker 2 (16:25):
Be moving there no one expects, right exactly.
Speaker 4 (16:29):
Like he's got a d H D bond, will find himself,
you know, giving you know, giving i'll two D days
off is the best way for us to keep host
Luba on the field anyways, right if we want to
have him one hundred and fifty games, he's going to
have to DH. He's going to have to you know,
we got to move him around with me just to
keep them just to keep them healthy.
Speaker 3 (16:46):
Oh, overall health, Joe I know, man.
Speaker 5 (16:48):
First off, Kuda, the pitching staff was unbelieve you start
to think when the air just.
Speaker 3 (16:53):
Over the last couple years.
Speaker 5 (16:54):
Hell, guys have just stepped in and done their thing,
and the way you guys are developing the young young players, right,
but this staff, how how well they did and having
the spot together and the way Hunter Brown started and
to come back and be a guy that's like that
dude's at ace right now. He overcame an early struggle.
So my question with with the health, where are we
with it? And it's a good problem to have when
(17:16):
they're all healthy, isn't.
Speaker 2 (17:17):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (17:17):
You know what, and when we when we talk about
the health of our club, you know, I like to remind,
you know, our fans and our audience that we no
team has played more games than our team for the
last seven eight years, right, So we have asking this
guy's year, you know, every single season. Two, Hey, go
out there and we elt you know, championship games, you know,
World Series games. So you got Christian Haavier, you got
(17:38):
Luis Garcia, you got Lance Because you got all these guys,
you're asking him to throw so many innings that at
some point there's going to be somewhere.
Speaker 2 (17:45):
And tear on the along the way.
Speaker 4 (17:47):
But at the end the other hand, there's comes to
Hunter Brown, the Spencer arburghedttis. Those guys come in and
get an opportunity to showcase himself. And now that all
of a sudden they taking over big roles in our
in our.
Speaker 2 (17:58):
In our rotation. So we need we need more of that.
Speaker 4 (18:02):
When he comes to the health like wisco Cia is
coming along really well, Landsmith College is coming around really well.
He's throwing bullpens already. So I'm excited about our rotation.
And you know it's going to take more than just
the six seven guys that we you know, are sorry
in rotation that we always does. We need twelve winning
fourteen guys and we do an excellent joby in this organization.
Speaker 5 (18:22):
We've seen a lot of baseball in your life. I've
coached it and managing it now, yord On Alvarez. I
just when you when you look at great hitters, I
look at him. You know, when he first came, we
think power, power street. To me, he's a hitter first,
power second, because the strikes his command of the strikes
on And you know better than I do. But what
is it like every day, where does he rank in
(18:44):
the guys you've seen? It's such a in the infancy
of his career. What is this parlay into ten years
from now when he's all done?
Speaker 2 (18:52):
You know, one of the best hitters that I've ever
been part of.
Speaker 4 (18:54):
You know, like you mentioned and and and that's the
importance of jord On Alvarez. He's like, uh, you know,
he's this great golfer, one of the you know when
I'm making golfer meeting, like he has all the golf clubs.
It's not only a tea where he's just going to
eat home. Hid he just he knows my game. He's
not there one let me give you know, let me
get a three club and let me just hit the ball.
(19:14):

So and but his preparation, how smarty he is, how
he makes adjustment pitch by pitch, a back to a bat.
This guy goes to the plate thinking about, this guy's

about your done. Is how much the information that he
shares with his teammates. He knows that he could do
things that probably not all the teammates, all these other
teams can do, but he knows that, you know what,
go look for this or try to get on top
of the ball a little bit.
Speaker 2 (19:50):
More so, he's also a hitting coach, trying to help out.

we're not really you know, talking about a lot. Could
it be one of the young guys?

you know, he did some things last towards the end

He's super athletic. Could play cornering field. He can also
play play out field. He went to Puerto Rico. He
played some left field. He did really he did a
really good job. So he's going to be one of
those guys that he's going to be competing for a spot.
(20:34):
And I could see him going to spring training and
going often because he gives you that versatility on the field.
You know, we had all these young kids coming up
that I can't wait to go out there and and
and get them on the field. Travel from the left side.

He's someone from the left that we'll be hoping that
he can that he could do, uh can turn things
around and figure some stuff.
Speaker 2 (21:04):
Offensively because he's ready defensively. So I'm really excited. Guys.

come up so we continue to bring championship to this city.
