With the 2025-26 NBA season now on the horizon following tomorrow's annual pre-game ring ceremony, the Rockets appear to have fortified their stance as a competitor in the West following Kevin Durant's 2-year $90M extension signing just before the NBA's season opener set tomorrow night at Paycom Center, with the Rockets taking on the Thunder. Tipping into action tomorrow evening, Dan and Chris take a moment to mention Kevin's extension and how this can fuel the team's fire kicking into the 2025 season.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
One of many highlight packages we hope to put together
this season and at least the next couple of seasons afterwards.
And with that we say away we go. Good morning
here on the seven ninety Morning Show, Chris Gordy back
in the saddle, myself, Deane Matthews, Trip Lee, Emmanuel Elmore
hanging out with you, Gordy. Yesterday we get the news
where it's not like this was a surprise, because a

(00:23):
couple of weeks ago at media Day, Durant saying that
he would be open to an extension, and we figured
it was coming anytime soon. And then a couple of
days before you tip the season off in earnest, you
go ahead and get it done. Two years worth upward
of ninety million dollars. Easy enough for me to say,
it should be easier to say that, but you know,

(00:44):
at least at six o two, maybe not so easy.

Speaker 2 (00:49):
Yeah, it was.

Speaker 3 (00:50):
It was kind of expect I mean, this was all
all part of the conversations when the Rockets were interested
in trading for Kevin Durant.

Speaker 2 (00:58):
Yeah, I think it was kind of understood that if.

Speaker 3 (01:00):
You're gonna trade for him, that you're gonna you know,
he's gonna want to sign a multi year deal, and
you know, this is a it's it's actually a little bit,
I think, as Wex point out, a little bit of
a discount from what he could have gotten, could have
asked for more, but uh, you know, it's just because
I saw one. It was a national article and they

(01:22):
were like, oh.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
Well yeah, I mean he's old.

Speaker 3 (01:25):
Really you're gonna sign this guy to the and it's like, okay,
like this is the price of Pam Poker. This is
what it costs to lock him in. I mean, this
is just where we are.

Speaker 2 (01:34):
So yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:37):
Shams Sharania the first to report yesterday fifteen time NBA
All Star and two time Finals MVP Kevin Durant signing
a ninety million dollar Rockets extension and as a Wex
point out, actually, just as Kevin Durant said, what happened.
He agrees to what could be his final contract to
finish his career with the Rockets and for less than

(01:57):
the maximum he could have earned. They're highly into season
begins Tuesday night at Oka. See that's it's it's exciting
because he said that, and it's like, I hope this happens,
Like can you imagine a storybook way for this to
go is Durant plays awesome, the Rockets get to or
you know, get to the championship or win a championship

(02:19):
with him place here a couple of years, it's awesome,
and then he retires like that.

Speaker 2 (02:24):
Nothing would be be better.

Speaker 3 (02:26):
And again he has said he wanted to be back
in Texas and you know, you remember his time at
University of Texas was beloved and yeah, here it is.
Sham's tweeted Durant was eligible for a max extension of
one hundred and twenty million, but understood when he chose
the Rockets as a trade destination that he would be

(02:46):
sacrificing money, to which one of the national guys says,
Katie locked in forty five million and guaranteed money for
his age thirty nine season. Not sure I characterized that
his unselfish sacrifice.

Speaker 2 (02:57):
And Durant, as he's been known to do, he takes.

Speaker 3 (02:59):
The social media a response to the guy, what would
you characterize it as since we're characterizing bleep this morning,
love that he just does not hold back on social media.

Speaker 1 (03:10):
The dopamine hit, remember he even said that you were out.
But we played some of the Netflix starting five little
series that they have and he was part of it,
and he talked about that he really enjoys in the
morning like it's it is his morning coffee of going
after people. And he says that for the most part,

(03:30):
his reason for doing it is, well, twofold, they want attention,
all right, final, I'll put you on the big screen.
And the other one is, as he said, these people
think that they're nice at ball. He's like most of
them have never run full speed a day in their
life and have no idea, like they think that, you know,
they can do what I do out there on the
floor and they can't.

Speaker 3 (03:50):
I'm glad you mentioned that because I woke up at
about three point thirty this morning, could not go back
to sleep, and so put on the h I put
on the Netflix, and I was like, oh, starting five,
I saw Durant and James Harden. So I started watching
Wat's the first three episodes and pretty cool, I mean

(04:10):
behind scenes, getting that into and this is Durant with
the Suns and kind of documenting how last season went
for him. But I also thought pretty good stuff from
James Harden, like reflecting on his time in Houston when
he got traded, how that okay see team was set
up for championship run, and how close those two guys are.
That's that's why there were those rumblings that, you know,

(04:33):
if they could have made it work or Harden could
have paired back with Durant here in Houston.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
But yeah, I thought that was I thought it was.

Speaker 1 (04:39):
Pretty cool now and I haven't had a chance to
watch it yet other than you know, some of the
clips that have made their way to social media. But yeah,
I mean a guy that definitely is not going to
shy away from the smoke on social media, and he
even says as much, and you know, has been accused
of having burner accounts before all that kind of stuff.
But you go ahead and get that out of the way.

(05:01):
So the Rockets in the Thunder tomorrow night, five point
thirty Rockets launch Pad coming your way to get the
season fired up and underway, and then Friday will be
the home opener here at Toyota Center, So looking forward
to some rocket ball. You're gonna have Matt Thomas and
the Adams on the call with you all season long.

(05:21):
When they're at home, either of the Atoms will be
with them. But then when they're away, they're right here
in our iHeartRadio Houston studios for those games.

Speaker 2 (05:30):
So we'll start that up tomorrow night.
