Speaker 1 (00:00):
Craig Way long Orange Sports Network, and you heard it
alrighty here on Sports Talk seven ninety on Saturday, as
the Horns go to Dallas and it works out well
for them. As we get going here on the seven
ninety morning show, Away we Go and good morning here,
Dan Matthews, Chris Gordy hanging out with you as Texas
(00:21):
and that one able to hold o you to just
two single solitary field goals and then after that that
was all they could get in. It says, you just
heard Craig Way tell you the final in that game
and Texas, I guess you could say, Gordy, their season
is back on track.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
Now.
Speaker 1 (00:41):
I guess we can say they're four and two now
with the win. But I mean, had they lost that game,
I think a lot of people would have been saying, yeah,
this is just not looking like it's going to be
a good year whatsoever. But now I guess maybe people
can start saying, Okay, fine, hey, they're not that bad.
Speaker 2 (01:01):
I did a hit with Jason Bristol and the guy's
a kids chew you last night and talks to college football,
and one of the things he asked me, okay, is
Texas back that's always the question is you know, it's
like all right.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
Texas days. Since Texas has been back too.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
Yeah, I mean, look, they've they've had a nice run
in these last two years, obviously getting the playoff semi
final coming up short, but they've recruited a high level
and so everybody just kind of assumed, Okay, they're going
to be back. And arch Manning, I mean, he's he's
the next Manning, he's the next coming. Of course he's
gonna be awesome. And so you know, we kind of
did a little bit heart before the horse thing, and
(01:40):
we found through the first couple of weeks, Okay, their
offensive lines not great. It's a working progress. Arch Manning
is a work in progress. The backfield has been struggling
to stay healthy, all these things. You know, they losen
to Ohio State and the opener it was a competitive,
you know game, but it's still a loss. And then
they open SEC played last week and go on the
(02:02):
road to Florida and they find out how tough it
is to win on the road in the SEC. They
lose in the swamp and so, you know, going into
the Oklahoma game, everybody was just looking at how talented
Oklahoma has been Their defense has been lights out. Jeometeer
has been awesome. And now was the question was, okay,
is he going to be healthy? I think they gosh,
(02:25):
I mean bread Vettibles deserves to be put to the fire.
They rushed that kid back and he was off. I
mean it was September twenty fourth. He had the hand surgery,
Jo Mateer. They said, normal recovery for it hand surgery
to return to the football field is a month. He
came back at two and a half weeks and we
(02:46):
can do this whole. Oh, the doctor did an amazing
job at all this. I don't give a damn. You
rushed him and he looked bad, and after the game
he goes, oh, no, the hand was fine.
Speaker 3 (02:55):
It was just mental. It was just mental. Okay.
Speaker 2 (02:57):
Well, then even more reason for why he should have sat.
Michael Hawkins, the backup started against Kent State last week.
He looked great. They should have started him in this game.
The fact that they started John Mattier. I think Texas State.
After the first couple drives, Texas went kidd, me, I
can't throw the football. This is gonna be easy, and
Texas turned it on. Look, it was still a competitive
(03:20):
game until late in that fourth quarter when Texas returned
the putt return for the touchdown, and that was kind
of the separation they needed. But I'll tell Arch, let's
pump the brakes a little bit on the getting up
and waving to the crowd after he has the big
twenty yard run. Like, okay, bro, you threw for one
hundred and sixty six yards. It's not like gets set
the world on fire.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
It's a great win. It's a rivalry win.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
Texas fans took over that stadium, but and a monster
win for Sark. Their season is still alive. Put it
that way, the playoff hopes still alive. Probably have to
run the table, but still very much alive, as opposed
to if you lost this game and it was your
third loss, you're playing a for free port for I
don't know what bowl game is there now, was Raising
(04:03):
Knees Bowl, whatever the hell it is. But big, big
win for Texas. I love hearing the eyes of Texas
are upon you and all their fans going nuts, and
poor Sooner fans. You were undefeated, number six in the
country and you can get your ass beat by Texas.
Speaker 3 (04:20):
That's that's kind of sting.
Speaker 1 (04:21):
Well, I mean, let's not. You know, overlook what you
brought up there about John Ntier coming back as quickly
as he did and saying, oh, man, what a great
job the doctors did. Well, then it's settled, Jim Crane,
just go higher whoever ou uses their medical team and
bring them here. I mean, two and a half weeks
a guy had hand inflammation in a fracture on his
(04:43):
hand and he was out for three months.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
Yeah, they're just they're just giving green lights out over there.
I just thought he was just out of sorts.
Speaker 3 (04:52):
Man.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
First two interceptions were terrible. His third interception was not
his fault, it was tipped, but they were Those are
not good footballs John Matier was throwing, and so again
it was advantaged Texas. And kudos to their defense doing
what they needed to do. But yeah, I mean, and
the stupid decision making before halftime. They're at least in
(05:15):
field goal range and they walk away with zero points
because Matier forces a ball into the end zone he shouldn't,
And it was just it was a lot of bad
for Brett vettibles in Oklahoma.
Speaker 1 (05:25):
Manny Muhammad looked like he was the receiver on that play. Yeah,
as soon as he caught that. But now it was
a great day for Texas. And obviously, as we mentioned,
they're now four and two on the season and still
I mean a pretty tough road ahead where you've got
not only Georgia on the road, but then also A
and M. Who I mean from this college football weekend,
(05:47):
maybe even just to bounce around a little bit the Aggies,
I mean where it looked like early on it was, uh, oh,
are they going to be A and M again? And
then I mean maybe it's a new day with Mike
elkohone company there in College Station, because they completely took
over that game pretty much after the first driving on.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
Yeah, the Aggies have played much better defense these last
three weeks. I want to put the caveat they've all
been at home. They've all that the Aggies through what
we're almost halfway through the season.
Speaker 3 (06:19):
We are halfway through this season.
Speaker 2 (06:21):
They've only left Kyle Field once and that was the
Notre Dame where they needed a miracle and a prayer
to pull out that win.
Speaker 3 (06:27):
I don't want to take anything away. It was a
good road win.
Speaker 2 (06:29):
But if that ball falls incomplete by Marcel Reid in
that Notre Dame game and they lose that game. What
are we saying about the Aggies right now? Pretty good,
but yeah, not great. They're undefeated, so people are going, ah,
it's a real deal team. Their next three games are
all on the road. You're at Arkansas, who gave Tennessee
(06:50):
everything they could have. Bobby Petrino's the interim, he's coaching
for that job, so he's gonna coach his butt off,
and Taylor Green of that offense is still pretty stinking good.
Then they're at LSU, where they have not won since
they've joined the SEC. And then they're at Maszoo, who's
looking their wounds after a close home lost to Alabama.
So these next three weeks are gonna tell us a
(07:11):
lot about the Aggies. Would not shock me at all
if they lose two out of the next three, because
again at home, m Kyle Field, you look awesome with
one hundred thousand screaming fans.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
Awesome.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
Go do it on the road, Go do it on
the road. Okay, I'll give you your props, but yeah,
I mean this thing was close. Florida comes out of
the gates and scores two touchdowns so quickly, and you're like, oh,
this thing's going to be a score fest. And then
A and M's defense climbed down and Florida got three
points the rest of the game, but that thing was
still when Florida kicked that field goal, I think in
(07:44):
the third quarter, it was a still seven point game.
It was like, Aggies, you're gonna pull away here, and
they did. The run game got going and they did
their thing. But very good team, but I'm not you know,
top four in the country might be a little bit
overrated for E and M.
Speaker 3 (07:59):
Right now. I got to see a little bit more.
Speaker 1 (08:01):
I mean, they're going to take on Arkansas this weekend,
who had their first game with the Bobby Petrino era
part two that you get his return. And it's funny.
I was listening to the College channel on Sirius and
somebody brought up you think that Patrino was sandbagging Sam
Pittman just so he could get the job again, because
I mean, I didn't see any of the game, but
(08:23):
apparently the offense looked completely different than it had been.
Speaker 2 (08:26):
So run game was phenomenal. Mike Washington for Arkansas was awesome.
Tennessee is not very good defensively. I mean that's now,
how many points they give up to Georgia a few
weeks ago? Right, they give up thirty one to Arkansas.
So yeah, Tennessee's Tennessee's another one there, it's like five
and one. But are you a little bit of fool
(08:46):
as goal? That's the problem is I heard somebody say
this this morning. Ole Miss right now is the best
team in the SEC record wise. Kentucky is the worst
team record wise. They played each other a few weeks ago.
It was a seven point game, and so that kind
of shows you from top the bottom in the SEC,
anybody could beat anybody.
Speaker 1 (09:02):
Well, And that's it's interesting you bring that up, because
I mean, that's why I mentioned what I did about
Texas earlier. Is there necessarily anybody in college football that
you look at and say, oh, that's the team right there?
Speaker 2 (09:14):
Yeah, Because I mean Oregon goes and loses on their
home field to Indiana. Great win for Indiana, but I mean,
do we think they're gonna go unskathe by the way,
I fell into the trap of last year, Oh one
hit wonder Indiana.
Speaker 3 (09:27):
Nice season, but you guys won't do it again. They
look better than they did last year.
Speaker 1 (09:31):
If you listen to Kurt Signetti. You know he wins. Yeah,
google him.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
And then of course you have Penn State losing with
the aftermath of that. Yeah, I mean there's there are
a lot of teams out there that this thing's wide open,
and even more wide open with it being a twelve
team playoff. I keep saying this to anybody who if
you look at your team and you just took a
tough loss or you're wondering, oh man, can we turn
this thing around? Ohio State was a two loss Ohio
(09:58):
State team at the end of last season. We were going, eh,
I mean, they're in the playoff, but I don't know
if they'll do much and they want it all. So
it's all about get just punch your ticket and get in.
And who knows, talent can take over at anytime.
Speaker 1 (10:10):
No doubt about it. So we'll get a lot into
that because college football kind of ruled the weekend with
the Texans being off, but we do have some Texans
things to get to. Is they'll get back to work
to get ready for the Seahawks, who I guess did
the Texans a favor yesterday in Jacksonville. So we'll talk
about all of that. You want to get in you
can seven one three two one two five, seven ninety one.
(10:32):
Thing we have not talked about is the Astros fans'
biggest fear. Maybe it's going to be realized. We'll talk
about it. So we're just getting going on seven ninety
Morning Show, Dan Matthews, Chris Gordy, hanging out with you
right here on your home of the Astros and Rockets
