Speaker 1 (00:00):
You see him and hear him every single morning on SEC.
This morning on the SEC network, you've heard him numerous
times here on the station.
Speaker 2 (00:07):
He's Peter Burns joining us for a few minutes. PB.
Appreciate the time, buddy.
Speaker 1 (00:12):
You got myself, Dan Matthews, Chris Gordy hanging out with
you this morning.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
All right, let's take you back to yesterday.
Speaker 1 (00:17):
You got the governor of a state who probably should
be talking you know, infrastructure and you know schools and
you know primaries and all that other kind of stuff.
He's talking the LSU head football coach yesterday. You're an
LSU guys, so you're watching, You're hearing that, you're seeing,
you're taking it all in.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
What's going through your mind with all of that?
Speaker 3 (00:37):
Boys, Good morning and first and foremost, like even before this,
you got to realize the earlier in the day, Ed
Ozeron had come on our radio shows and said that
he was willing to come back and be the head
coach at LSU. And that wasn't the wildest thing that
happened around LSU football.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
That's that's wild.
Speaker 3 (00:56):
I mean this Jeff Landry, the governor, he's there for
a press conference and this is about food stamps and
what's going on with the government shut down in typical
Louisiana politics, someone asked him about LSU football, and Buddy,
he was not holding back. I mean he went out
there and threw Scott Woodward, the athletic director, underneath the
bus and started talking about he trusts Donald Trump to
(01:18):
hire the next head coach more so than his current
athletic director. I mean, it was everything Louisiana politics and
LSU football has always been. But in front of everybody
in a press.
Speaker 4 (01:29):
Conference, well, look, PBF, he if Trump can get save
in LSU, then hey, I mean I might, I might
love the guy.
Speaker 5 (01:34):
But you talk about like if you're gonna lean on somebody, right,
like lean on saving and be like, hey, listen, I'm
just letting you know you should go back there for
three or four years.
Speaker 3 (01:45):
I mean LSU fans.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
W be like, all right, We're fine with that. What uh?
Speaker 4 (01:49):
I mean, I kind of think this has happened before.
I mean, has this happened before that you've had a
school in the process of hiring a head coach with
a lame duck athletic director. I mean, as a happened before.
Speaker 3 (02:02):
Yeah, I mean listen, I don't know what the situation
is at the University of Florida right now. Right I mean,
a lot of people were not happy with Scott Strickland
keeping Billy and Apier around. Will there'll be more of
a border.
Speaker 2 (02:11):
Regents, you know, decision.
Speaker 3 (02:13):
But at least to this point, you don't have the
governor the Santus coming in and saying having a press
conference saying that, hey, I'm going to apport the board
of supervisors and they're going to be the one, not
the athletic director. And again, you guys have been around
it long enough. You all know that these conversations happen,
especially in the state of Louisiana, but traditionally it's back
room conversations and it never makes it out to public.
(02:34):
But I think that was that was why it was
so shocking and at the end of the day, does
not make it any easier to hire a new coach
at LSU. And in fact, when he starts throwing Jimmy
Sexton and Trace Armstrong the super agents underneath the bust,
almost saying that they should be looked at by the
NCUBA and almost investigated, that's not a great look because
(02:55):
those are the people you're probably going to do business with,
and I can't imagine that's going to give you much
of a discount going.
Speaker 1 (02:59):
Forward work now, Probably not. It's again. Peter Burns joined
us here on the seven ninety Morning Show. Find him
on Twitter at Peter Burns ESPN. And I mean you
kind of just led it right into my next question
here because we've seen and heard all the names. You
got Lane Kiffin out there, you got Joe Brady, all
of the names. But what does your gut right now
tell you where LSU goes on this? Like, like, who
(03:22):
do you think at the end of spending this carousel
is finally the one that jumps off?
Speaker 4 (03:28):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (03:28):
I mean again, we're probably two months away from this
soap opera, which is great as the sports videos shows
and at the SEC network because I'm going to have
so much content and it's going to take a bunch
of turns. I'll be honest with you. You know Brent
Key over at Georgia Tech, you know guys, because he's
very interesting to me because it feels like kind of
(03:48):
a no nonsense like, hey, we're going to bring physicality
back to to you know, to Georgia Tech football. He's
done that, and that's kind of what they're looking for
at LSU. You know, anytime that you fire ahead coach,
you always hire somebody that's a little bit different. If
he was offensive minded, then you hire a defensive guy.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
If he was a little bit.
Speaker 3 (04:07):
More you know, flashy, you hire a guy that's kind
of just in the trenches. So Brent Key's one of
those guys. I mean, obviously I think Lane Kiffin will
be getting a look. But if I'm Lane Kiffen, why
not stay and build your own legacy. I mean again,
you know, best case scenario, you win one championship at LSU,
you're gonna be still behind Nick Saban and as Ojeron
(04:29):
is beloved among the LSU faithful. So I mean, my
first call would have been Dan Lanning. But the problem
is is Landing and Phil Knight and Nike have all
kinds of really good deals out there for him, So
it'd be really, really difficult, especially with the comings and
going for the last couple of days, to get him
all the way back down to the back rouge.
Speaker 4 (04:46):
The Kiffen thing is fascinating because I brought this up Pete.
You know the state of Louisiana. You don't compete with
anybody else in the in state for recruiting. The one
thing Lane has done okay with an Oxford but not
crushed it is they've crushed on the transfer portal side.
But I think that's not a necessity because they haven't
been signing top five recruiting classes at Old Miss. If
(05:07):
he goes to LSU, he's gonna sign top five, top
ten recruiting classes, and it's just kind of a different path.
I think the biggest question he has to ask himself
is can I win a national championship at Ole Miss?
And if the honest answer is no, then I think
he needs to jump.
Speaker 2 (05:24):
I think that's fair.
Speaker 3 (05:25):
I think one of the things that you look at though,
is also I mean, Ordy, you can go back and look.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
At last year.
Speaker 3 (05:31):
I mean that roster for Old Miss was as good
as any roster in the country and they went nine
to three, right, So it's not there's no such thing
as an absolute slam dunk, you know, right now for
any of these schools. And again, the only thing I
think about Lulane Kiffin, he's done so much of this,
you know, rehabbing his image, saying the grass is not
(05:51):
greener I'm not chasing other things. And they had that
whole documentary on him, how he's a changed man. You
can't keep putting that out there and then all of
a sudden just leave Oxford. I mean they'll they'll look
at him as a Benedict Arnold the same way Tennessee
fans felt like he was when he left.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
For USC Again, Peter Burns join us here.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
You're going to see him on your TV if you're
watching SEC Network. Here in about twenty minutes as part
of SEC This Morning with the SEC Network ESPN. Everything
of the sort football season is a football guy golf season.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
He transitions over in the golf. How do you get
that job? Pebe? Seriously, I want to know you huis
on people.
Speaker 3 (06:29):
I mean, I mean, that's that's what it was. It
was black male on people around here to give me
that job. But man, it's it's you know, in this
guy's I'll tell you this, it's as crazy as coaching
search is. We still don't even know who the hell
is going to be in Atlanta for the SEC Championship game.
I can't tell you what teams are going to the
college football Playoff. Like the sport as wild as these
(06:50):
headlines have been I don't know if it's been in
a healthier place when it comes to you know, parody
and having what thirty teams that might still be involved
in the college football playoff.
Speaker 1 (06:59):
Hunt, no doubt about it. Speaking you know, getting at
more local PB Texas. I mean, they've got one loss
in SEC play. They've got the loss early this season,
a non conference to Ohio State. Is there a path
for Steve Sarkisian's team to get back there?
Speaker 4 (07:15):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (07:16):
There is? But the problem I think it ends this week.
I really like this Diego Pavia led Vanderbilt squad, and
people go, well, it's a flash in the pan.
Speaker 2 (07:23):
Whatnot?
Speaker 3 (07:24):
If you know ball and you watch the way Vanderbilt
plays are highly efficient both offensively and defensively.
Speaker 2 (07:29):
They've got the dudes.
Speaker 3 (07:30):
I mean they out physical and man handled LSU and
that roster. So I think that, you know, even with
Arch Manning practicing this week, coming off the concussion protocol,
Vanderbilt is the better team. Like can we swap the
jerseys Vegas would have? You know, Vanderbilt's football team is
probably a ten point favorite, but everyone still looks at
the brand and says, oh, it's Vanderbilt.
Speaker 2 (07:50):
They can't win.
Speaker 3 (07:51):
They're gonna beat Texas this weekend in Austin, and then
we're gonna be looking at the team in Texas to
talk about. Is the Texas A and m Aggie, who
have been incredible so far this season.
Speaker 4 (08:00):
Your gut failing is Starks? Do Sark stick around in
Austin or was that NFL eyeing the NFL report?
Speaker 5 (08:06):
True?
Speaker 3 (08:07):
Yeah, I don't know why he would leave that situation now,
and again, that was a weird report and whenever the
Diana Rassina was kind of pressed on it, it was very vague.
So you know, I think the fact that Jimmy Sexton
and these agents had to come out real quick and
say no, that's not happening. That rarely happens in college athletics.
Like normally an agent wants as many rumors that are
(08:28):
out there. So I still think Sark can get it
done in Austin. He said, what you know, been the
playoff two years in a row and then again still
technically live this year. But they just need to get
better quarterback playing. They hadn't got that from Arts, especially
from the offensive line.
Speaker 1 (08:45):
PB gets you out the door on this one. Two
parter for you is A and M Legit and Mike Elko.
The second part here, he's a Northeast guy. He's from
New Jersey and you know as wall as anybody, Penn State,
Notre Dame schools like that, those are the schools of
the northeast. Penn State offers him, say twelve million dollars.
Is he still the coach this time next year at
A and M.
Speaker 3 (09:05):
I mean, it would be a much easier path because
there's only two or three teams that are really worth
the dam and the big ten. I mean, it's a
pretty fraudulent conference when they talk about just depth wise,
it'd be easier for him, But no, he's in the
thick of it right now. And trust me, if oil
starts going up to ninety dollars a barrel, which I
guarantee a bunch of the Houston listeners would like that
are driving into it in the oil and gas industry,
(09:25):
Elko can have whatever he wants. And again, that's an
untapped resource there because if you look at A and
M gout, my goodness, when's the last time they won
a national championship? Talking about land being he wrote, Mike
Elko and the Teddy Rosevelt of college football. They have
a damn statue in and he can claim all the
BUCkies he wants.
Speaker 2 (09:44):
Right there at A and M.
Speaker 1 (09:46):
The Rough Riders is what they're going to change the
name too. It's a Teddy Roosevelt reference right there. Very
good by you, Pebe. You're always good for those, all right,
Peter Burns again, SEC Network SEC this morning, You and Doure?
Speaker 2 (10:00):
Is that is that the pairing again?
Speaker 3 (10:02):
Yeah, I'm stuck with the stuck with the Florida Gator, who,
by the way, same thing. They're looking for a brand
new coach, so that'll play into this thing as well too.
So again, all we know is Lane Kiff and Jimmy
Section are going to use this as leverage and they'll
they'll have a good Christmas bonus.
Speaker 2 (10:18):
We'll just say that in that way.
Speaker 1 (10:20):
And then, of course, you know, being the SEC, I mean,
it's only probably gonna be fitting if Auburn decides that
Hugh Freeze is no longer the guy for the job, Buddy.
Speaker 3 (10:30):
Je Freeze and Brian Kelly on a golf course somewhere
one of these days. I mean, you know, it's like
the end of Shawshank Redemption, where they see each other
on the beach.
Speaker 2 (10:38):
You go.
Speaker 1 (10:39):
Thanks again, Peter Burns Say find him on Twitter at Peterbirds,
ESPN and SEC this morning, starting up here in a
few minutes.
Speaker 2 (10:46):
Thanks PB. We'll talk to you soon, buddy, say both
