Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now here's Doug Pike.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
All right?
Speaker 1 (00:03):
Sunday edition of the program starts right now. I feel
like I'm at the kid's table at Thanksgiving or Christmas
or whatever. Because for the second day in a row,
that main seat in this room, the one where you
can see out the door and all that stuff, the
little headphone jack not working. So instead of worry about
(00:25):
that this morning and panic because I got in a
little bit late, I came in ten minutes early just
to make sure I could move if I had to.
And I've moved because I had to. And this is
gonna be this gonna be a little bit different program.
Well in a way. It will be in a way,
it won't be what I want to do today, because
this is the last show of twenty twenty five for
me here at least. And actually I've already done my
(00:49):
last show of twenty twenty five or fifty plus, because
I'm taking a big chunk of next week off as
well to really get recharged. And no, I have not
cleaned my garage yet. I thought about it twice. Does
that count, Frankie for anything? I think that counts for something.
It's got to count for something, man, In any event,
(01:10):
I am planning on playing golf tomorrow. By the way,
the low temperature tomorrow morning has been jacked up to
I think fifty one something like that, and that's one
degree higher than my kind of have to think about it. Actually,
our Saint Jukee tournament was pretty chilly this year, and
I think it was down around that number right as
(01:32):
we arrived, but by the time we teed off at
nine o'clock, it was much better. And that's the same
thing that's gonna happen tomorrow. It'll be pretty chilly, and
hopefully this foreboding of clouds tomorrow, that's at least that's
what my home no, it all says it's going to
be cloudy, but hopefully not so much that we can't
(01:55):
get a little sunshine through there. That's one of the
things that saved the Saint Jude. It was beautiful, an
absolutely beautiful day, a lot of sunshine, and the temperature
didn't feel nearly as cold as it as the thermometer said.
And I'm hoping that's what happens tomorrow. Either way, I'm
gonna play. My son is gonna play with me, and
get this Frankie. This kid's eighteen years old. Okay, and
(02:16):
he is asking me last night, texting me for one
of his friend's houses. Yeah, I'm gonna play, dad, I'm
pretty sure I'm gonna play. How cold is it gonna be?
And this is a kid who goes out the house
when it's forty degrees in shorts and T shirt and
he's wondering how cold it's going to be tomorrow. And
I said, look, you know how old I am. You
(02:38):
know how old you are. If I'm playing and you don't,
you'll never hear the end of it. You will never
hear the end of it. Yeah, he'll be there, He'll
be there. It won't be so bad. Uh Yeah. So
hopefully he and I will both play well as well
and all will be well. And there's a chance we
could win like three dollars or something like that too.
(03:00):
We're not playing for free. This is high high steaks,
high steaks golf man.
Speaker 3 (03:06):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (03:07):
Like I said last year of twenty twenty five, I
want to sort of wrap up the year and hear
from as many of you as possible about just exactly
what you think were the biggest stories this year. Those
of us who love the outdoors in Texas and along
that same line. There's any new products that you tried
this year, anything that you'd heard about. Maybe I have
(03:28):
a couple on my list that are not entirely new
for twenty twenty five, but they kind of made headlines
in twenty twenty five. And there, Frankie, by the way,
you've been in here? Now, how long? A couple of years? Almost?
Is it any here or not that long? No? No, No,
(03:48):
that's right. Yeah, you're new this year, aren't you? Yeah,
new in twenty five, Frankie west Morton. There you go,
and glad to have you, by the way that I mean,
that's sincerely. I'm not just blowing smoke joy what you
bring to the show, which is an interest, not a passion,
because I think it would probably get boring if I
was sitting in here talking to somebody who loved fishing
(04:09):
as much as I did. But you bring something new
to the table, and that's what I always look for
in producers. I really appreciate that in you. So all
this year you've been sitting in there and listening to
all of this when you can, when you're not working.
And I respect your interruptions in there and your responsibilities,
But is there anything that kind of you think back, go, yeah,
(04:32):
I remember talking about this anything.
Speaker 4 (04:36):
Yeah, I mean the thing that I had never thought
about is the fact that in regulating a lot of
like deer populations and stuff like that, like that, hunters
actually provide like an essential part of that where it's true,
you know, they're regulating the amount of the population.
Speaker 1 (04:57):
I had never thought about that.
Speaker 4 (05:00):
And how you know, you've talked about a lot where
if you don't have that, then you just have you
know that too.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
What are the two tools that nature has? Yes, starvation
or disease. Yes, that's it. Oh, a plus, you passed,
You've aced the exam. You know that's if you're not
gonna realize anything else. Even if that's it, you've really
absorbed one of the most important parts that most people
don't understand. You You probably don't remember, Frankie, but years ago,
(05:32):
and I have never seen it debunked. Years ago, someone
wrote an editorial, a little opinion, you know, something, for
the editorial page one of the major newspapers up north
to ask and it was a woman's name on it.
I don't know if that really matters or not, but
the bottom line is this person wrote, why don't people
buy their meat from the grocery store where no animals
(05:55):
have to be killed to get it. That's what we've
been dealing with for about the last fifteen twenty years.
And so when you realize what carrying capacity means, and
you realize that populations have to be maintained so that
they coincide and can coexist with the amount of available food,
(06:17):
because the problem if you have, say you have one
hundred deer on your boy, I've gottenched off in the
weeds on you already. You got a hundred deer on
your place, okay, and you've got fifteen hundred acres you've
got well, yeah, yeah, that'd be enough. You got fifteen
acres a deer, basically fifteen Yeah, you got fifteen acres
a deer, and that can feed them.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
But then.
Speaker 1 (06:41):
The next year you don't take any deer off the place,
and the next year instead of one hundred deer, and
you've got one hundred and twenty, let's say, and you
don't change anything. You just leave all one hundred and
twenty of them there. Well, if there's any sort of
a drought or any little outbreak of disease, there's not
enough nutritious food there to make all one hundred and
(07:02):
twenty of those dear healthy. So what happens It is
not just like twenty of them die off in the
in the and the rest stick around. They're all be
They all become more subject to disease, more subject to
temperature extremes and anything else that comes along that could
knock them out. And the longer you let that happen,
(07:23):
the worst the potential for problem becomes. And in some
cases entire populations of animals right down to the last
couple of pairs have been knocked out. And so you
get it, and thank you forgetting that. Well, that was
a long answer to a short question, wasn't it? Sorry
about that? What do you? Here's another one for you? Okay,
(07:43):
seven seven ninety Email me Doug Pike at iHeartMedia dot com.
I look forward to hearing from as many of you
as feel like calling so that we can really get
in some good discussion. Uh, let's see what he's got
going on. Cams got weighed in morning from just south
of Katula. It hit ninety two yesterday ninety two degrees
(08:09):
in Katulla. Y Oh, my word. Got a group of
six only manage one good buck in an orrix so far.
That's kind of cool. Beautiful sunrise from down there, as
sunrises go. I bet Captain Scott, you know I'm not known.
Never mind, I'm not gonna say anything about that photograph.
He's down there hunting in Katulla ninety two though that's
(08:32):
not supposed to be deer season, nor is well, I
don't know. Not tomorrow be fine for golf. I'm not
gonna complain. If he can hunt deer at ninety two,
I can go play golf at fifty one. Oh, Mercy,
let me check more emails. Oh, that's okay, that's oh,
I've got one I'll take care of during the break.
And back to my piece of paper. So Frankie's learned
(08:56):
about carrying capacity. That's for this audience. It's Frankie, and
I think you've figured that out by now. But most
of the people I talk to understand that. But the
people that I really appreciate having as part of this
audience the most well, and I don't want to say
that everybody equally important, but the most interesting calls to
(09:16):
me are the ones where somebody will call and it happens.
Sometimes you've probably heard one or two of them. So far,
but they'll call and say, you know, I don't really
hunt or fish, but I like your show, and that
to me means I'm doing my job. I'm entertaining and
I'm educating, and sometimes better at it than other times.
I'll be the first to admit that I'm not batting
(09:39):
a thousand. I've had shows that I turn off the
microphone and go, hmm, that was rough. Oh no, that
wasn't what I wanted, and it just makes me want
to work harder to get it right the next time.
And you, as all of you, are welcome to participate
in this show, and a lot of teams or a
lot of shows don't really allow that much. I as
(10:00):
long as you stay kind of on point a little bit.
I don't want to go off in the weeds. And
I don't even need to know what you had for
breakfast on Wednesday, things like that. But if it's anything
remotely related to the outdoors, let's talk about it, because
what you tell me might trigger a good discussion that
I hadn't even thought about for that day. And that's
(10:20):
especially what I want to be doing today is kind
of recapping twenty twenty five. I'll tell you one of
the biggest stories of the entire year, and there's no
question about it, is this drop from It wasn't so
long ago we had a ten trout limit, then it
was five, and then now what back in May? Three
trout a day within a pretty tight slot. And I
(10:41):
do think this will play out well in the long run,
But right now it's it's almost a fifty to fifty
split among a lot of really experienced fishermen. I know
they either love it or they hate it, with only
a few in the middle. It's probably say forty five
forty five on the extreme ends, and then about ten
(11:03):
percent in the middle, or say, you know, we'll just
have to wait and see. It could be good, it
might not be good. I think what we're gonna see
relatively soon, and maybe just even as soon as this
winter is more bigger fish being caught by the people
who know where to look for them and how to
catch them. I think that if barring any any weather anomalies,
(11:24):
and I'll I won't go any farther than I'm certainly
not gonna say the word that everybody's thinking when I
said that, barring any weather anomalies between now and spring,
we should see even more rebound, and that middle class
is gonna be a little bit bigger, and it's just
going to continue to do that. We're gonna be introducing
(11:46):
more fish into a it's a it's gonna ultimately be
a better balance of age classes. And it may take
two or three or four years for it to get there,
but I tend to be around for that long at least,
and I tend to reap the benefit of that. Maybe
go down another, get another one of those trips like
Cliff and I had one hundred years ago. It seems
like now, gosh, that was back in the nineties. It
(12:08):
was back in the nineties when that happened, and it's
just it's still almost as vivid in my head as
it was when it happened. That was good stuff. Oh right,
good heavens, it's already break time. I will break by going.
Let's see if we can just pick up the clubs.
Go out to the Black Horse. How about that. Take
two ninety to Fry Road. If you're going outbound on
(12:29):
two ninety, hang us south and then when you get
to see golf course on both sides of the road,
put on your west blinker. If you don't know where
that is, put a little compass on your dashboard and
learn compass is a very important tool. So you're taking
a west turn, that'll be a right if you don't know,
take a right into the gate and then drive up
(12:50):
in there to the clubhouse, get inside, and from that
point forward, anybody and everybody you see there who works
there has nothing better to do than make sure you
have a good time. There'll be somebody on the course
to bring you food and snacks and beverages and whatever
you need. There'll be somebody in the pro shop to
make sure you get out on time and get where
(13:11):
you need to be. If you don't know which way
to go, there are people at the far end of
the range who would be more than happy to help
you fix the swing that you've been cursing about every
time you played and lost another quarter to your buddies
because you can't put, or you can't chip, or you
can't drive.
Speaker 3 (13:26):
It's just a.
Speaker 1 (13:27):
Wonderful place to play. Two courses to the North course,
daily fee and very it's more forgiving than the South.
The South is playable, eminently playable, also turned private this year.
That's the only way you're gonna get on there is
either be a member or a guest of someone who is.
And I'm sure that if you are serious about membership,
you could probably talk Craig Hicks out of around just
(13:48):
to see the course for yourself, if you've never played it.
I bet he'd do that. I'm not counting. Don't don't
tell him I said that, but I think he would.
There are great people out there at black Horse, they
always have. And I've known Craig since he took the
helm a while back from another man who was equally
as good when he was there. I've known one, two, three, four.
I can count real quick for five six general managers
(14:12):
of black Horse. I think maybe at least five since
I've been doing this behind this microphone, and everybody who's
been there has been great and just made the whole
property greater. That's what Craig's done this year. Get out there,
look around, ask for a tour, ask for some information.
Start online if you want, that's fine, But if you're
(14:32):
ready to go play some golf on a day like
today and it's not going to be so bad, just
get online. Black Horsegolf Club dot com. That's black Horse
Golf Club dot com.
Speaker 3 (14:43):
Watching the ship through oldly.
Speaker 1 (14:45):
Hi, Well I'm back. Does that work, Freggy?
Speaker 3 (14:49):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (14:49):
We got Yeah. You know, I'm gonna get my junior
Junior Engineer badge with just a couple of more lessons
in here, I found the button that was not allowing
me to to see or hear or do anything from
the seat. I'm sitting back in the one. I prefer
the one. Everybody who works alone in this studio prefers
(15:10):
one where we can see the exit. I guess that's
from this old school thinking about how to get out
and where.
Speaker 3 (15:17):
To get out.
Speaker 1 (15:18):
I saw something last night, just as a matter of fact,
on Facebook said talking about the first the first time
you walk into a room, whether it's a restaurant, a store,
or anything, take ten seconds and make sure you know
where the exits are, make sure you know kind of
where everything is, just to kind of scope out the
people in there and all that stuff. So just in
case something goes wonky. And we all know what wonky means.
(15:40):
If it goes wonky, you you know, you don't just panic.
Then everybody do something. Nah, Okay, I'm want to see
if I can go get faux pro on here. Oh,
the trilogy is complete, We got it. All working now, Frankie,
what's going on? Faux pro?
Speaker 5 (15:55):
What's going on? Mister rich Doug?
Speaker 6 (15:57):
You know we are out.
Speaker 1 (16:00):
Well, I want to know where you are.
Speaker 6 (16:03):
Well, I'm over here and get to our days.
Speaker 5 (16:05):
Neck to the woods.
Speaker 6 (16:06):
I'm overcroaching on his property.
Speaker 5 (16:08):
I'm over here.
Speaker 6 (16:09):
We just put the boat in at Cago boat wrap
off thirteen seventy five. We're going to go hit the
north end of Lake Conrad today to see we can't
find some green fish.
Speaker 1 (16:17):
Holy cow, you know that's a pretty How has Conro
been for bass? Because I haven't fished for bass up
there quite some time.
Speaker 6 (16:26):
Conrad has been I mean bass. And MLS has come here.
I know that, and h just say MLS, say MLF
for you know, Mike Acadellic come over here and he
had one hundred thousand and four days. So they're catching
cakes fish. In fact, the area I'm in right now,
between Cagle and the bridge, a few years ago Texas
Parks a wildlife shocked up to over thirteen.
Speaker 1 (16:48):
That's interesting. I got a fish.
Speaker 6 (16:51):
Go ahead now, I say the carp screwed the lakeup
years ago. They ain't all the hy drill. You can
come out here and launch anywhere. But what it did,
it made the basket daft and the bay didn't have
nowhere to hide for the bass, but they got bigger.
Speaker 1 (17:04):
You're exactly right. Yeah, I watched it all happen. It
was I've watched it in real time. Those grass cars.
It's not the carp that did it. It's the people
who put the carp in the lake because they were
told by Parks and Wildlife to put I don't remember
the number, put X grass carp in there to eat
up all that hydrilla. And somebody somewhere up there on
(17:26):
the lake decided, you know, if X would be a
good number, what about five X or ten X or
whatever it was they ended up putting in there. And now,
so help me, these these non breeding and I'm wrapping
quotes around that because they were breeding. Uh, there are.
It's a pretty good population of grass carp in Brais
bio down here in Houston. And that's no Joe, it's crazy.
(17:50):
I see them in mullet. When Joe Dogget and I
used to fish for those carp fly fishing, there were
almost as many mullet and then Brais bio right there
on six' ten as their work. Cart it's, crazy but
anyway somewhere you're gonna throw up there, today.
Speaker 5 (18:07):
We're gonna we're going to old school of.
Speaker 6 (18:08):
TODAY i may use lastcoat just to keep myself in
The Santa City river, channel just to keep keep the
boat in the right. Place but we're gonna we're doing old.
Speaker 5 (18:16):
School we're gonna.
Speaker 6 (18:17):
Shallow spinner, bait square mill crank. Baits uh flip a,
jig flip A texas. Rig we're, Gonna we're gonna old school.
Today there ought to be shallow with this trunt. Coming
they ought to be ought to be. Eating we got
a little bit of.
Speaker 5 (18:27):
Wins i'm.
Speaker 6 (18:28):
Thinking i'm HOPING i could pick a spinner bait up
and never put it, down is What i'm.
Speaker 7 (18:31):
Hoping, so, yeah that would be, nice Wouldn't it's, yeah
you KNOW i need to fish more with you, two
because the Problem i've had over the past few, years
When i've been so narrowly focused on these couple of
little lakes That i've been.
Speaker 1 (18:43):
Fishing When i'm done playing golf or after a practice or,
Whatever i've gone to smaller and smaller crank. Baits AND
i can't even tell you the last TIME i threw
even a half ounce crank. Bait BUT i, KNOW i,
mean excuse, me spinner. Bait, UH i know they. WORK
i mean, YEAH i used to throw a like three
quarter out spinner. Baits got, it got blades the size
(19:06):
of a tablespoon and just trumpump tump tump, tump doming
through the. Water And i've just all almost.
Speaker 6 (19:12):
Abandoned IF i Throw, usually IF i throw a spinner,
bait it's it's a visual. Thing IF i gotta, Go
i'm making a wake on the surface to STYLE. I
IF i can't do, That i'm going to a chatterbait
or a crank.
Speaker 3 (19:23):
Bait.
Speaker 6 (19:24):
Yeah but uh, yeah we just had the first sign
we're All Lake conro and not On Lake livingson no.
More we just had a guy blow by us up
here in all this timber and one hundred and twenty
five thousand dollars icon bass. Boat and he looked at us, like,
oh you're on my, legs so let me tell you
All Lake.
Speaker 5 (19:41):
Conro.
Speaker 1 (19:41):
Yeah, yeah it's a little bit different up there than
it is On, livington isn't.
Speaker 8 (19:45):
It you?
Speaker 6 (19:47):
Know AND i thought they'll be In my Buddy, jonathan
he's up here with me you, know they could manage
this lake if they wanted. To they could take ten
ninety seven south and let WHAT i call the dumb dumb,
boats boats without troll. Motors let those boats have the
south into the, lake put all the pellets out there
to kill the. Hydrilla they leave ten ninety seven north
wild for the duck, hunters for the, fishermen and split the.
(20:08):
Lake and that they could do, that if they cared
enough to do, it they.
Speaker 1 (20:10):
Could they, Don't and you don't be very hard to
enforce because you got people coming to visit and stuff like,
that and you'd have to put the signs at every
boat ramp in six, languages and and it's just it
becomes more of an issue than to just leave it
alone and let you gripe about some guy running past
you with no troll motor, exactly some guy like Rain
(20:32):
lane coming by in his pontoon, boat messing you.
Speaker 6 (20:35):
UP i, know Watching lane. Guys we're gonna watch them golfers.
Speaker 1 (20:38):
OUT i don't know about fish and they don't. Know oh, man, man.
Speaker 5 (20:45):
Try, man we do to thab schedul.
Speaker 1 (20:47):
Picture absolutely please do. MAN I I'm i'm slowly but
surely getting more fired up about going and doing more bass.
Fishing i've still got those permits that we put together
to old. Fish gosh What Givens, Creek i've still got
those forms filled. Out oh maybe they're still. Good we
want to go over.
Speaker 6 (21:07):
There, yeah ain't like you let me know when you're. Ready,
Man i'll Say i've got vacation, time SO i can
take a day off and.
Speaker 2 (21:14):
Whatever it's.
Speaker 6 (21:14):
Convenient so are taking days?
Speaker 1 (21:16):
Off so what do You what was the big story
for you forrest for twenty? Five outdoor?
Speaker 3 (21:23):
Story the story for.
Speaker 6 (21:24):
Me outdoor story? Man probably, man big outdoor story for
me it was Probably. MAN i have to go back
to uh, prices go back to a, day a day
On kurds WHERE i had the old lake to myself
(21:44):
up there and left and and it wasn't nobody out,
there and it was one of them. Days was like,
that that's a lake where you don't look for the.
Seagulls you look for bald.
Speaker 5 (21:52):
Eagles oh, yeah schools of.
Speaker 6 (21:54):
Fish they're after eating.
Speaker 2 (21:55):
Bass they're not.
Speaker 6 (21:56):
Eating shed like. Seagulls and and uh by e level
and o'clock that, DAY i stopped counting at seventy.
Speaker 2 (22:03):
Four bad Good. HEAVEN i have no.
Speaker 6 (22:05):
No recollection WHAT i caught WHEN i got off the
lake that.
Speaker 5 (22:08):
Day.
Speaker 6 (22:08):
Wow, Wow my buddy just, Said my buddy just, said
surviving a tornado On Lake. Belton Holyw we had to
get Some we had to get. Up we had to
get up against a bluff. Wall and ACTUALLY i remember Telling,
GOD i, said if you want, me you got to
be awfully acted to hit me Where i'm. At you,
know both the light that or something you're.
Speaker 1 (22:27):
Darn Dare, god you might want to rethink that.
Speaker 6 (22:34):
Exactly you might want to issue an.
Speaker 1 (22:36):
Apology you could.
Speaker 6 (22:37):
Hear we were within earshot of the. Tornado, lord it was.
Spooky stop. Fishing AND i got up against the bluff
high sixty foot. Bluff is that? Okay?
Speaker 5 (22:47):
Lord AND i, said this is, It this is.
Speaker 6 (22:49):
It you're gonna have to be alfree actor if you
gonna hit.
Speaker 3 (22:51):
Me.
Speaker 1 (22:52):
Man you, KNOW i kind of halfway felt that way
the day THAT i caught my first double digit. Bass
i've told the, story BUT i was just in a
little like a twelve foot loominum boat with a troller
motor on, it and this front's coming in And i'm
catching this is private water and there's big bass in.
It And i'm catching like four to seven or eight
(23:12):
pounders every cast on a big spinner, bait as a
matter of. Fact and it's getting, closer and it's getting,
closer and about a quarter quarter mile, AWAY i watched
the top getting blown off a pine tree by a lightning.
Bolt And i'm still. Chunking i'm not. Leaving it's blowing
forty miles an, hour and this is poor. Now AND
(23:34):
i finally caught that one big, fish AND i just
held it, up looked at it and realized it was
as big as it. Was there's no doubt it was
at least. Ten it wasn't probably eleven and a, half
but it was bigger than. TEN i, said that's. IT
i got to get off this. Water AND i put
that thing on the bank and ran as fast AS i.
Could Mess, man the things we.
Speaker 6 (23:56):
Do huh after one more? Cats one more?
Speaker 1 (24:02):
Cat, YEAH i have one of those on the bay.
TOO i may bring that up later. On all, right
well we're gonna get to twenty. FIVE i gotta, go
BUT i will wish you guys luck and let me
know when you find something. Else, okay, man all, RIGHT
i got to take a quick, break and then when

(24:23):
pruitt who was out there At risley And Waterfowl. Club
Let dave know that if he wants to call, back
that'll be probably be better BECAUSE i got to take this
real quick after the. Break hey, man how about where AM?
I where are my? Stuff where's my? STUFF i can
do that for. Sure that's What i'm looking. For let
me tell you About El Coubana. Cigars this Is here's
(24:45):
What i'm looking. FOR i had the wrong stack in
front of. ME i knew WHAT i was looking at
didn't look. Right El coubana's owned by a guy Named Manny.
Lopez i've talked about him many times, before And Manny
lopez came here with his dad and a long time
ago in two thousand and six and started this cigar
manufacturing company right down In Texas. City only four dozen
in the whole. Country we have one here In Texas,
(25:07):
city very unassuming. Place it's not, big it's not. Giant
they're not smoke stacks on. Top it's just several people
Of cuban descent sitting in a room rolling, cigars and
most of the space they're. In actually is more of a,
lounge a, club if you, will a smoking lounge where
you can go enjoy a nice cigar and visit with your.
(25:28):
Friends maybe the next card game that breaks out in
there won't be the first. One watch some sports ON,
tv and just enjoy a fine. Cigar they make more
than one hundred and fifty, varieties and they're always fresh
because they roll and ship out probably an average about
seven hundred and fifty one thousand cigars a week out of.
(25:48):
There it's amazing how it. Works really ask if you
get over, there Ask manny for a little. Tour it
won't take. Long it's not a big, place but it's
just fascinating how that rolling process. Works you can stand
there and watch it. HAPPENS a second lounge In League
city that's more Old havana, style big roll up garage
doors on either end to let the breeze blow through.
There whether it's warm or cool or, whatever just a
(26:10):
nice open airplace to enjoy a fine cigar again with your.
Friends private, events he'll come there and set up a
table where he can personally roll cigars for all of your.
Guests if you've got a big, tournament golf, tournament shooting,
clay sporting, plays, tournament whatever that you want to have
cigars made for and have specific, bands whether that's your,
(26:33):
charity your company, logo whatever it, is or your own.
Name he'll put those on every band of every cigar
you get from. Him all you got to do is.
Speaker 3 (26:42):
Ask.
Speaker 1 (26:42):
Man he's one of the best Guys i've ever run
into in this, business And i'm so glad to have
him on this, show And i'm very proud to speak for.
Him Elcoubano cigars Dot com is the website elcoubanosigars dot.
Com all, right welcome Back Doug Pike show On Sports
talk seven. Ninety thank you for listening and trying to
(27:04):
get hold of this fella for a long time because
he knows where the ducks, are and that would Be
David pruitt From Riceland Waterfowl. Club, david what's going?
Speaker 5 (27:10):
On? Man?
Speaker 3 (27:12):
Oh not a whole? Lot have you?
Speaker 6 (27:15):
Have you got?
Speaker 1 (27:15):
Ducks are? You are you still? MAD i am at
the people In iowa And nebraska and all where they
got hot tubs for ducks and all that.
Speaker 3 (27:21):
Stuff, Well i'm not too happy with. Them let's just
say that.
Speaker 1 (27:25):
That's a very polite way to put. It, Yeah i'm
thinking about going up there and pulling the plug on
all their little, spas their little four seasons hotels for
geese and ducks and. Whatnot so how is The Eagle
Lake prairie looking?
Speaker 3 (27:36):
Now, well a lot of places are drying, up especially
after we hit this north wind again tomorrow for a
couple of five miles an. Hour that's a good, point
but we've we're still got a lot of. Water picture
turn on some more, wells pump ups, places and guys are,
shooting you, know anywhere between two to, twelve fourteen ducks
(27:59):
and a bonus goose every now and the.
Speaker 1 (28:01):
End there's nothing wrong with two to twelve ducks on
an average duck. Hunt and a lot of people tended
back WHEN i was Guiding, david and you know. This
you've been around it a long. Time you've been doing
this fifty. Years you know what you're. Doing and a
lot of times somebody will, hear, oh, well we went
out and we shot twenty four, ducks and another guy
comes in and we shot. Eighteen and then everybody who shot, thirteen, fifteen, sixteen, ten,
(28:26):
twelve they all feel like they didn't do any. Good
but that's really darn. Good. YEAH i don't have any
problem with, average with average duck, hunt average goose, hunt
something like, that because it's better than the national average
usually around.
Speaker 3 (28:39):
Here oh, yes, Sir, yeah it's not just about the.
Numbers people have to. Understand it's about the experience of going.
Out but the ducks aren't really moving as. MUCH i,
mean we've been pushing eighty two degrees even Around. CHRISTMAS
i expect the ducks to.
Speaker 1 (28:55):
DO i don't know if you. Heard this MORNING i
got an email From Scott noll down hunting a little
bit somewhere close To, katula and yesterday In kotula it
was ninety two.
Speaker 3 (29:07):
Degrees that's buddy.
Speaker 1 (29:10):
Warm it would like to be sitting in a box
blind that, somewhere one of those black plastic box blinds
that you hope in the dead of. Winter it's great
that it's nice and warm because the sun hits, it
but at ninety two, degrees that's just like sitting in
an easy bake. Oven, Man.
Speaker 3 (29:25):
No, KID i don't want to be in.
Speaker 1 (29:27):
There, no so you, mentioned you mentioned these your guys
are getting every now in the Little bonus goose. Somewhere
are there really enough geese to even try to go hunt?
Them or they just you just put, out maybe put
out a few rags in some dry spot behind your.
Speaker 3 (29:40):
Water, no there's guys going out and they're shooting. GEESE
i went out today to shoot. THEM i, mean there's
there's more than enough geese around.
Speaker 1 (29:49):
Them oh that's good.
Speaker 3 (29:51):
Dues they're just as the last few. Years they just
like to stay in one big group here.
Speaker 1 (29:56):
There, yeah, yeah you. Know AND i think the only
difference between now and back twenty thirty years, ago when
whatever it WAS i was guiding twenty something years, uh
that we had lots of those big. Groups they like
to hang out in a pretty big. GROUP i guess
it's safety in. Numbers but there were just a million
geese and they couldn't all sit in one, field so
that we would have a bunch of those pretty big.
(30:18):
Groups now it's just down to a couple on each.
Speaker 3 (30:21):
Prairie hunh, yes. Sir right, now we've got us some.
Traffic there's a little enough traffic around this last week
with the, fog there Was i've got reports of several people,
shooting you, know two to four g's you, know on
their duck. Hunt it's not the, most but, hey while
you're trying to shoot ducks and you're getting two to
(30:42):
four geese on a bonus and a crane every now and,
Then i'll take, that.
Speaker 1 (30:45):
You, Know and you're, Right, David and people need to
realize that WE i think it's it's kind of like
if you only look at let's say you're looking at
pictures on on social media of fishing, trips and all
these guides have every one of their, pictures they've got
full limits of fish splayed out all over the dock
or all over the cleaning, table and the guy who
(31:06):
went out there and got four or five with his
buddies feels kind of, bad like they missed out and
they're no. Good but it's just that's what it's really.
Like and that's it goes back to what you said
right when we. Started it's more about the experience and
the numbers of birds you. Get that's just a. Bonus
and a lot of young PEOPLE i don't think really
(31:28):
understand that. Yet, no so they.
Speaker 3 (31:31):
Haven't and the biggest THING i see right now is
people still trying to call like they're drunning a. Competition duck, Call,
YEAH i mean they're killing. Themselves, yeah they.
Speaker 1 (31:44):
Are they're just wasting you, know they're they're doing far
more harm than good unless you. Are the irony is
that unless you are a, legitimate not contest, caller but
a contest winning caller like you are ducks and, geese
unless you're that qualified to have that thing in your,
hands the best place you can keep it is in your,
(32:05):
pocket because somebody who really knows what they're, doing if
you'll just watch them when they're. Hunting they don't call very.
Often you only call when things are going. South you
only call to the south end of a northbound bird
if you see his head and he's coming to. You
what's the point in? Calling you just risk messing it, up, Right, oh.
Speaker 3 (32:25):
Exactly there's guys this week which said many times that
they just heard wings and looked up and the dutsters
trying to land in the. Decoy, yes it's.
Speaker 1 (32:34):
A, yeah that's, exact and it happens so. Often but
then the very next group that comes, around they're one
hundred and fifty yards, away they got their wings locked
and they're coming right at. Them and if you're sitting
on the side of the road somewhere watching. Them first
thing here make me and the bird is. Gone they know,
(32:56):
exactly they know. Better, man what about pretty? Duck so
coming around and people getting some real pretty? TROPE i
was going to ask you about. That what are the
penttails look? Like it they tailed out?
Speaker 2 (33:06):
Yet?
Speaker 3 (33:07):
Uh pretty? Much a lot of blue wing. Killed two
weeks ago we got a huge and flux of blue wing.
Kill shows you how far the migration is. BACK i
mean we're talking lots of group shooting four to eight
kill per.
Speaker 1 (33:22):
Hunt wow and full presence wow. Wow, yeah they're pretty.
Birds i've got one of those. MOUNTED i had. ONE
i may have given it to a lodge years. AGO
i donated a few birds because my wife's just SAID
i had too, many you know. How you know WHAT
i had to do AND i did. Right but that's okay. Man,
(33:43):
yeah they're pretty. Birds all of these ducks that we
get down, Here i'm trying to think of the, well
some of the puddle ducks aren't really. Pretty but when
you consider going on to the prairie like we, are
in the little pockets of woods we, have you got
a chance to shoot what ducks you? Got teal pintails
an Occasional, mallard if it'll ever get cold enough to
(34:04):
push them on down. Here we got some really pretty
ducks on that. Prairie. Man we used to have people
come down from up, North, DAVID i know you've experienced it.
Too they come all the way from way way up
north and, say oh, please just whatever, happens we don't
care as long as we can get a good drake
spoon bill, like, okay, yeah.
Speaker 3 (34:23):
Yeah some, guys some guys hold some up and some
pictures the other day hold them up the kind of
uh you just get the picture of the spoonbill full.
Flume nice, birds you know they.
Speaker 1 (34:33):
Are they're so different and so and they are the
coloration on them Is mallard, like so they've got that
going for. Him but just that big old beak, man
it's just so goofy looking to all of us who've
seen them, forever you.
Speaker 3 (34:46):
Know, yeah but he's. Mamaaxe.
Speaker 1 (34:49):
Yeah oh, Man well what kind of what kind of
how are we talked? About? Water, oh let me take
you to the for a couple of. Minutes, Here i'm
gonna shift gears and ask YOU i was asking the
theme of this show this. Morning this is my last
show of twenty twenty. Five, okay so the theme is
what in the outdoors really kind of got your attention this?
(35:14):
Year what was the biggest out outdoor story in your?
World you're talking just waterfowl or anything anything, Really, yeah
if it meant something to, you what was? It, Like,
WOW i can't believe that, happened OR i can't believe
we got to do this or can't do that or.
Speaker 3 (35:29):
Whatever, WELL i ran up on the hogs with thermals at.
NIGHT i was seen. Setting just watched deer after, deer you,
know up before dark and then watch them with thermals
and timing them and seeing their patterns and. Everything last
night did not show. Up it's usually twenty minutes till
(35:49):
six to fifteen till. SIX i always see. DEER i
can almost name the. Deer i've got names for. Them oh,
wow AND i watch. Them not one time DID i
see one last? Night and at eight o'clock everything or seven,
thirty excuse. Me all the DEER i found were laying.
Down the hogs was laying. Down matter of, FACT i
had one charge me last night at about oh, lord
h he. Stopped, WELL i had a handheld thermal WHEN
(36:11):
i was walking up to a drop, gate gonna look
across the field for open up the, gate you, know being,
Smart and all of a sudden here's something running at
me AND i had to handle throw my hog and
my green lights was on the. TRUCK i went to
the left as he was going to the, right and
we missed each other by about three.
Speaker 1 (36:28):
Yards holy, cow, Man, YEAH i don't want any part of.
That oh my. Gosh, no it was.
Speaker 5 (36:33):
Two hundred and two.
Speaker 3 (36:34):
Twenty AND i jumped back in the truck to make
sure everything was, okay and he wasn't on my.
Speaker 5 (36:40):
Butt but.
Speaker 3 (36:43):
Because i've seen the teas, man, OH i read the,
rifle and he was nowhere to be. FOUND i, bet,
Yeah holy get out of my. WAY i got to
get and got somewhere to.

best of what's, left right. Exactly, yeah that's that's SOMETHING

errington owns Air ride. Bikes hence the name Air. Ride
it's a r r, ide it's part of his last.
Name that's how he did, that and it's very clever
and he's a really good businessman in that he makes
sure that any bike you buy up there will get
the opportunity to have him put it together for, you
which is a very good, idea by the, way because
there's a little bit of complicated stuff when you're putting
(40:44):
these electric bikes. Together he has a great assortment of e,
bikes everything from just little commuter, models maybe something you
could get even for your, kids or just for a
little if you want to put on a helmet and
ride it up to the drug store to get your,
prescriptions you can do that instead of having to get
in the. Car save you a little money that, way
a little gas. Money he also has bikes in there
(41:06):
that are strong enough to get you and a. Deer
you get you to the deer stand and then get
you and the deer out of the woods and back
to your truck or camp or wherever you're. Going those
e bikes are great for, hunters stop and think about,
this all the noise you make walking, in all the
scent you leave on the ground walking. In if you've
(41:27):
got that e, bike you've got these big old soft
tires that are going to just kind of ease you
in there pretty. Quietly and then you've got the power
coming out to throw your deer on the trailer and
get you and your everything else you took in there
right back to. Camp same for the. Beach if you
want to run up and down this is SOMETHING i
really want to get an e bike, for is to
(41:47):
run up and Down north Padre al And seashore and
just stop where the fish, are make a few, casts
catch a few, fish and then jump back on the
bike and go somewhere else where you see little finger
bullet out there in the. Surf many different uses for these.
Things he even has three wheel bikes for those of
us who are a little bit, older a little less
stable on two. Wheels you can get on one of
(42:08):
those three wheel ee. Bikes, go get you some, groceries
go wherever you want to, go right up to the
baseball fields and watch the little kids play. Whatever these
are all things THAT i like to. Do air ride

Speaker 5 (43:08):

Speaker 2 (43:12):
On.
Speaker 5 (43:13):
No BUT i. WAS i was telling the producer over
there THAT i was sitting, there and they just swam
off BECAUSE i think THAT i was gonna Be they
KNEW i was be live on. Radio BUT i had
the green heads over here and they were dipping down in. Corn, yeah,
no and they were dipping down in corn THAT i
through out here and eating like a big dog like. That,
(43:35):
hey and and for and for propo up pro pro
up there where he's. At, yeah, man you know up around,
there remember uh some kind of top orders that looks
like a. Perch and then always remember the purple fire
till oh you got me. Down that's that's a. Classic
AND i haven't seen guys cats thirteen and a half
(43:56):
pound bass up, there.
Speaker 1 (43:57):
Good, Heavens, Yeah i've. HEARD i, mean they're they're. Were
there was a, time just Like folkpro was talking, about
when the high drilla got eaten up by too many
grass car all of that grass went, away and that's
where all those little bitty food fish. Hid and there
were some very, opportunistic bigger bass in there that just
(44:18):
mowed through all that forage, fish the little, crappy the little,
perch all of that. Stuff and they were toads for a,
while But conro became a recognized big bass lake for
several years after. That now it's kind of leveled, off
still a good place to, go.
Speaker 5 (44:34):
And that's why we dropped all The christmas streams, here
give a place for the little fish to live before
they got big enough to. Run AND i so no, Anyway,
OH i sent you real. QUICK i sent you some
pictures of the coffee cup that my son in law
gave me that has a guitar on it and nice
and oh. Yeah and then you'll see a paint by
(44:56):
number on canvas THAT i got to. Do AND i can,
paint BUT i never painted by numbers. Before but it's
a lighthouse, man you, know like over here on the.
Ocean and then uh, yeah, hey and then let's see
one more, Thing tracking.
Speaker 1 (45:13):
Callers, Yeah frankie wrote tracking. CALLERS i got about a
half a minute.
Speaker 5 (45:16):
Left, ye my, dogs my dog callars my wife from my. Dog,
yeah he's about seven years. Old he's An Australian boe
healer but he, well, no actually it's a training callery
AND i don't want TO i don't want to hurt
him too bad or. Nothing AND i, know you know,
What so that's my question about. How AND i had
(45:40):
to look at the videos on it and all, that
AND i got. It and it has like a radio
device like you're talking on the radio And i'm gonna
have to learn how to push all that or. Whatever
but do you know anything about.
Speaker 1 (45:52):
Them training callers that you like shot, Callers.
Speaker 5 (45:55):
YEAH i like shot.
Speaker 1 (45:56):
Calls, YEAH a lot of THE a lot of the
bird dog guys use those to kind, of uh expedite the.
Process i'm not a huge fan of shocking a dog
to get it to do what you wanted to. Do,
yeah and so.
Speaker 5 (46:08):
You, can and it has a vibration on it, Tho, yeah.
Speaker 1 (46:11):
The vibration just to get their. ATTENTION i THINK i
would start with that and just be patient with that.
Dog you, know you're not you're not trying to do
this and make a living off of. It you're just
trying to help your dog learn where to be and
where not to. Be and So i'd be patient and
use that, vibration BUT i wouldn't jolt. Them and you,
know some guys, do some guys.
Speaker 5 (46:30):
Don't but it's not that's the exact question THAT i
told my. WIFE i, said, NO i need to Call
doug because he'll, know he'll know about, it and And
i'm going to go and look on the internet or
whatever and the people that send it to me and
then do the class on. It and then it's always
(46:50):
good to do, classes you.

you can get it all boxed up and ready to
take home while you have that lovely enjoyable meal on the,
patio especially, tomorrow it'll be a little cooler. Tomorrow always twenty,
(48:23):
four well not twenty four to, seven but twelve months
out of the, year all year, long while game processing
four legged, stuff not ducks and not. Fish they don't do,
that but most of the four legged game in this
state they will take care of for. YOU i believe.
It had a guy call me the other day and
took an elk down there To bellville Meat. Market i'm
sure they get a few of those. In not as
(48:43):
many as the deer they, process because a lot of
people take their deer To, bellville but they sure get
that stuff, done and they get it done on a
menu of options that you won't. Believe plenty plenty to,
see plenty plenty to. Eat if you're a, carnivore or
at least an. Omnivore that carnivore you're gonna Love Belleville Meat.

Dot com nine o five On Sports talk seven to
Ninety The Dougpike, Show thank you for listening this. Morning
if you've got something on your, MIND i open the show,
saying What i'm looking for is things that got your
attention outdoors. Wise this year we talked about the new
(49:26):
trout limits and little else really other than some personal
experiences a couple of guys. Had But i'm looking for
something that kind of applies to all of, us that's,
different and it doesn't have to be brand new in
twenty twenty, five but just something that really rose to
prominence on people's. Minds and one of the things THAT
i can kind of think about would be all these new,
(49:49):
apps these new fishing. Apps every TIME i Open, FACEBOOK
i get pitched on yet another fishing app that's gonna
help me catch. Fish and it may be for a small,
feed maybe because you're gonna have some ads pop up in, there,
whatever but this app is gonna make you a fisherman
(50:10):
and help you find the. Fish AND i can't. Help
but wonder if you're using those apps and you're really
successful because of those. Apps i'd love to hear about.
It i'd love to be convinced that they really. Work
But i'm still somewhat, skeptical and not Because i'm older
and BECAUSE i don't understand the. TECHNOLOGY i understand the,
(50:32):
technology but what apps can only suggest where and how
to fish and what to throw based on the, past
sometimes the distant. Past if they really want to talk
about having a true knowledge, bank a true starting point
that's going to be, beneficial then it has to cover
(50:53):
a lot of. Time i'd kind of rather just go
out there and start. Fishing and the apps can't react
in real, time either to a sudden thunderstorm comes up
or a front comes racing south and Turns Lake livingston
into The North. Sea you can't factor that into your.
(51:13):
APP i don't. BELIEVE i haven't seen an app that
offers that kind of real time decision making on where
to go catch a. Fish AND i know that there's
a lot of data involved in putting these apps, together
AND i applaud the people who put them. Together But
i'm still old school. ENOUGH i just want to go.
FISH i just want to go, fish and i'll, Look
(51:36):
i'll Use i'll tell you that the resource THAT i
rely on more it's special to be, well exclusively for coastal,
fishing is saltwater. Recon they've got live cameras, that to
me is invaluable BECAUSE i usually make my decisions on
when and Where i'm going to go fishing maybe two
(51:58):
three days, out BUT i really rarely plan something more
than a week. Out i'll just, Decide, okay On saturday
after the, Show i'm gonna run down to surf side
and fish the surf Or i'm gonna go To galaston
and fish one of the rock groins or the end
of the sea wall or. Wherever AND i don't do
that willy. Nilly it's based on conditions leading up to
(52:21):
the day THAT i plan to go. Fishing but then
that Morning i'm gonna look at saltwater recon or actually
i'll Leave i'll look at it before. Dark the day,
Before i'm already in the car and on the beach
and parked before. Daylight BUT i use those cameras a.
LOT i really do that's one RESOURCE i think has been,
(52:41):
invaluable and there are more of them than just saltwater,
recon but that's my go, to And lures keeps adding.
Cameras almost every TIME i turn, around there's a new
camera on, there so that's kind of. Cool i'm not
sure about the. Apps if you are and you swear by,
Them i'd love to hear from. YOU i really. Would
by the, Way folk pro So fro protected me last
(53:02):
night talking about a show that was on The Outdoor,
channel AND i went and jumped in there for about
twenty minutes and almost fell. Asleep, honestly there was a
bunch of guys discussing the different not the difference between
karp and gar And buffalo and, whatnot but the kind
of the places that they all hold and their, status
(53:26):
if you, will among fresh water, fisheries fresh water, populations
and some they say get too much, attention some get not.
Enough they were concerned that bow hunters or bow fishermen
are taking too many in some cases and not enough
in some. Others and, HONESTLY i what they were trying
(53:52):
to one guy at least was trying to convince the
others on the. Panel IF i read it correctly or
listened correctly and heard. Correctly one guy was really beating
a tambourine for practically making carp game fish and giving
them the same protections that in guar. Too and in some, cases,
(54:16):
yeah there are some gar that need a little bit more.
Protecting certainly the big alligator. GAR i wouldn't want just
unlimited fishing for. THEM i like the idea that we
have rules and regulations on. Them but there are other gar,
species and the carp and the buffalo and whatever that
are in most freshwater fishery or freshwater places practically in the.
(54:36):
Country i'm not so sure that we need to be
babysitting them and giving them the same status as a
bass or a rainbow trout or a salmon or a
steelhead or. Whatever most of the conversation last night on
that show was about the Up Great. North that's WHY
i bring up the. Steelhead that Didn't that didn't move my, needle,
(55:01):
really AND i couldn't GET i couldn't get excited about
somebody beating a tambourine for just a run of the mill.
Carp i'm. Sorry and you, know if you like them
and you like to catch, them great go catch them
if you. Don't one of the things THAT i can
(55:22):
see the point more with bowfishing than with traditional, fishing
and that with traditional fishing you unhook the fish and
drop it back in and it's got a really good
chance of. Surviving if you're a bow, fisherman when you
bring that fish on, board you're dropping it on the,
deck you're releasing the arrow and letting it flop, around
(55:42):
or you're putting in an ice, chest, whatever so nobody
trips over, it and then you just let it go
or it's. Done it's a dead fish in the bottom
of the. Boat AND i do think that that could
be that could be abused a little, bit AND i
wouldn't be entirely. OPPOSED i think it would be difficult to,
enforce BUT i wouldn't be entirely opposed to somebody putting
(56:06):
daily limits on bow fishermen how many of what species
they can take in a. Day that wouldn't bother me at.
All AND i think if the people who guide that
would get on board and realize that when they start
to limit the numbers of gar or buffalo or carp
that the people on their boats can take in a,
(56:28):
day chances are that the limits would be generous enough
that the people would feel like they got their money's.
Worth but at some point you, say, okay we're, Done
we've done as the best we can by, law and
then pat them on the, back just like duck hunters,
do just like trout fishermen, do just like bass fishermen.
Do bass fishermen don't keep many bass. Anymore let's call
(56:52):
it crappie. Fishermen, okay you hit your, limit, catfish you
hit your, Limit you're. Done AND i wouldn't have a
problem with that at, all especially for the beau fishermen
with the rough fish is what they call, them all,
Right nothing rough About Kobe. Stevens i'll probably be. Wearing
it'll probably be one of my layers. Tomorrow it won't
be the only layer because it's gonna be a little,
breezy a little cool, tomorrow so there will be something
(57:13):
under and over My Kobe stevens, shirt but it'll be.
There Kobe stevens has been around many years, now And
i'm so happy to have become a part of the
family over there and been able to tell you about.
Them men's and women's. Sizes the men's sizes all the
way up to FOUR. X that's gonna cover most of.
Us and, hey, yeah it's gonna cover most of. Us
(57:34):
they also have kids, stuff which is. Great you're gonna look,
Excellent you're gonna look like you're a professional, player and
you can just kind of strut out there looking. Sharp
people are gonna look at. You so help. ME i
had a guy ask me one day on the range
AS i was walking off the range and he was walking,
Over he, goes aren't you one of the pros? Here,
(57:55):
like clearly you didn't see me take a? Swing, yeah
it's the clothes. Man Now i'm a. MOM i guess
For Kobe Stevens gear if that's kind of, sad surely
they could do. Better they could Get fabio or somebody like.
That do you even know Who fabio?
Speaker 3 (58:09):
Is?
Speaker 1 (58:09):
FRANKY i? Do, Okay, yeah well then you get the
humor in that They one of the THINGS i like
most About Kobe, gallick the man who owns the, company
is how much attention he pays to. Community he is
every TIME i call him almost say, HEY i can't
play golf this. WEEK i got three TOURNAMENTS i gotta
go work at and help them raise money or he
(58:29):
had his own tournament a few weeks. AGO i got
to play in. THAT i was very thrilled to be
part of. That and he's just an all around good.
Guy they've opened a store now up on the north
side Around spring, somewhere and if you can get online
and find the, ADDRESS i don't have it in front
of me by all, means if you're up that, way
you need to go in there and get hands on
this stuff and really see and feel how good the
(58:50):
quality is also in some outdoors gear that he offers.
Now Kobe stevens dot com co B y Stev S

Nineteen On Sports talk at seven Ninety The Duckpike.
Speaker 1 (59:09):
Show thank you for, listening certainly to appreciate. It kind of.
Funny let's got a text or an, email excuse, me
an email and a photograph For matthew all the way
down In. Florida he's got a place on The Banana,
river a little secret spotty Fishes Banana. River very cool
placed fish by the, way if you're ever down. There
he's asking me about the origin of something an animal
(59:31):
left behind on the trail that leads to his secret
spot and wondering whether it's, raccoon, coyote or. Bear my
gut says raccoon based on a couple of. Things probably
not a bear and a little too dark to be a.
Coyote but the bottom line, was AND i Did frankie
kind of laugh AND i put a smiley face AFTER
(59:52):
i said. IT i can't tell really by the. Size
if it's pretty, big it may be a small black.
Bear AND i think there are black bear that far
down In. Florida Now i'm not one hundred percent, sure
BUT i think. So and even if it, is, THOUGH
i don't think it's anything to worry. About if you've
got a good secret fishing spot and you've never been
bothered by a bear, THERE i would imagine that bear
(01:00:14):
is trying to avoid you is just as much as
you are. It and if the reward at the end
of the trail is fishing that little, private secret, spot
well not, private but secret spot of, yours then keep
walking the, Trail, matthew keep walking the trail and catching
your fish man seven one three two one two five
seven Ninety email me dugpike it iHeartMedia Dot. Com let
(01:00:35):
me see IF i got any other. EMAILS i need
to go. Over, TikTok. TikTok there's alan.
Speaker 5 (01:00:42):
On.
Speaker 1 (01:00:42):
Fabio it's the hair, pal it's the. Hair you should
chop it so you don't get confused with. Fabia oh,
MAN i don't need to chop it. ANYMORE i do
get my haircut regularly, Still but THE i had a
bald spot on the kind of the back top of
my head from the TIME i was like twelve, maybe
(01:01:04):
and it resulted from the first TIME i ever tried
to do a backflip off a diving board BECAUSE i
stayed a little too close to the board and as
my head came back, around pow and just scraped off a, little,
tiny about a nickel size piece of scalp that never regrew,
(01:01:25):
hair which was kind of. Weird and only recently after
being shown the back of my. Head this is by,
RECENTLY i mean a year or two, ago the woman
who cuts my hair throws that mirror up, there said
let me show you the back AND i looked at the.
BAG i, said that's bigger than a. Nickel what's going on? Back,
(01:01:46):
oh you lose some? Hair uh, ah thanks for. Sharing so,
anyway that's the price you pay for having another. BIRTHDAY
i suppose at my, age it's not just, like who was?
It who was that comedian who said? This it Was,
GALLAGHER i believe, it big long haired. Comedian and he
(01:02:08):
talked about how his hairline was receding at one, point
and his hair had receded quite a bit when he
was very popular as a. Comedian and he said that's
better than, advancing if You he's kind of, right if
you stop and think about, it he's kind of. Right,
uh let's go back To i'm hoping some of you
(01:02:29):
will call in and talk about some of the. Things oh,
Yeah matthew wade back in and he's gonna check for fresh.
Tracks that will help a, Lot that will help a. Lot,
oh he's from the woodlands over, here by, Gosh i'll. Say,
so he's got some he's got some stuff he can measure.
Against AND i think we'll solve the mystery at some
(01:02:50):
point here. Shortly if you do finally see something that
verifies your your identification of this, Animal, matthew let me.
Know i'm kind of. Curious now back to WHAT i
was talking, about, goy where WAS, I? Frankie what WAS
i just saying BEFORE i Saw matthew's email there's nothing
we can't rewind tape because there's no tape. Anymore whatever it,
(01:03:13):
Was i'll move. On i'm back to all of these
things that were important to us this, year and one
of the, things you, know it's not fishing or, hunting
but this is just something that really stands out as
super important for twenty twenty, five and that was what
happened In july up in The hill. Country we just
can't recap the year without mentioning that so many lives,
(01:03:37):
lost so many children's lives, lost and many lives saved
too by first responders who risk their own lives to
get up there as fast as they could and pluck
people out of. Trees. Literally it's just, frightening and of
course so much help from literally all over the world
in the aftermath doing the kind of grizzly work of
(01:03:58):
recovering victims of that, flood if it weren't for people
Like Captain scott and everybody else who voluntarily went up.
There scott went up there intending to just spend a
couple of days up, there helping out where he, could
and he wound up up there FOR i think what
two and a half three weeks something like. THAT i
just interviewed him recently about, that at the request actually
(01:04:19):
of a. Listener he, Said, Hey i'd like to hear
From scott to kind of rehash what happened up, there And,
FRANKIE i hope at some point when we have a
best of, again you can find that interview and play it,
again BECAUSE i think that's a good one and all
the work that they did after the floodwaters were seated
really was instrumental in helping some of those victims families find.
(01:04:44):
Peace and it's kind of a rough piece when you
stop and think about, it but at least at least
there was, closure and that's such A i don't think
those wounds ever, close but it's. Closer at least it's not,
close but it's. Closer we had good dubb and quail
numbers this, year since something we tend to talk more
(01:05:05):
about before the season starts than during for some, Reason
i'm really not sure. Why and you, Know forrest mentioned.
It Foaux pro mentioned it just a couple of minutes.
Ago forward facing. Sonar it is crept into almost all
of the competitive fishing bass, fishing at least almost all
of the competitive bass fishing, tournaments And i'm still not
(01:05:28):
a fan of using that technology in bass tournaments because
it doesn't It let me take this phone. Call, WELL
i don't want to miss a call. Today Hey, david what's, up?
Speaker 10 (01:05:39):
Buddy, yeah real, Quickly. Doug, okay take the ball around with.
It you're talking about changes this. Year, yeah one, big
one big change this. Year the tax stamp on suppressors
goes away on after the First And i'm not a suppressor,
guy BUT i think that interested to see what that
(01:06:01):
does with a with a market for.
Speaker 3 (01:06:02):
SUPPRESSORS i got.
Speaker 1 (01:06:04):
It, yeah thank. YOU i appreciate. That i'll talk about.
It you got.
Speaker 3 (01:06:07):
It thank.
Speaker 1 (01:06:07):
You he's, driving Good, man not gonna just chat and,
drive chat and. Drive, yeah that's a money saver for.
Sure AND i suspect that the, yeah the suppressor market's
gonna go, up up and. Away you, Know i'm contemplating,
IT i really. AM i don't want to put one
on every RIFLE i. Own i'd just rather put on
(01:06:29):
the earphones and and not worry about. It but then,
again if if you're bringing kids into, shooting and, uh
that's a good way to make sure that they don't get,
hurt they don't get their hearing compromise like mine is
and most of the GUYS i grew up. With because
we shot so, much especially out there on the prairie as,
guides we needed to hear birds, coming and we didn't
(01:06:51):
have high tech ear protection back then where you could
amplify the. Sound you either could hear or you couldn't,
hear whether you had them off or, on and that
Didn't that didn't work well as a professional guide because
you just didn't know the birds were, coming and you
couldn't keep your head on a swivel all the way
through a. Hunt, Yeah i'm gonna you know, What i'll
(01:07:16):
get Maybe JERRY tk or OR i don't, Know Billy, carter.
Somebody i'll get somebody on the phone next, week Maybe
jay if he's still, Around JAKE tk down there At Shooter's.
Corner But i'll get somebody on to talk about that
and see if they expect a big change when the
calendar flips in a few. Days, Yeah i'll do. That
(01:07:37):
it'll have to be in twenty twenty. Six, unfortunately because
we're darning there out of time for this. HOUR i
might try during the break here see IF i can
get somebody on the phone real. Quick thank you for, That.
David so, see, YEAH i Mentioned ford facing. Sonar i'm
really not a fan of. That i'm, not and especially in,
competition because it's it's no longer, fishing it's just. Looking
(01:08:01):
you're just WATCHING tv and when when the show, starts
you drop your line down there and you can you
can watch the fish go right over there and eat.
It and, that to me is that takes most of the.
Magic it takes all of the magic out of, fishing
it really. DOES i prefer to look at the, water
(01:08:22):
look at the, spot look at the, cover look at
the know what's on the. Bottom maybe with just some
rudimentary electronics and the stumps down there and. Whatnot but
when it's so detailed that you can actually tell the
difference in species of fish and the size of those. Fish,
Yeah i'm Just and call me old, school that's. FINE
(01:08:43):
i don't mind. That and if it's it's, you then be.
You that's just perfectly. Fine but it's not. Me all,
right let's take another break. HERE i want to get going.
Out stuff still to, unpack AND i got a couple
of EMAILS i need to respond to THAT i was
earlier didn't do. It AND i also see two here
this morning that say golf. Joke i'm gonna check them
(01:09:05):
both out and if they are appropriate for a g rated,
audience which this show always, is THEN i might just
t one, up so to. Speak Carter's, country speaking Of,
billy sixty plus, Years Carter's country's been. Around think about.
That you can't be in any business for sixty plus
years without doing a whole lot of things, right and
(01:09:27):
that's What that's What Carter's country's been doing and taking
care of hunters and shooters for six decades. Plus there
are no snorkels At Carter's. Country there's no, footballs there's
no tennis, rackets they're none of. That it's, guns ammo
and hunting, stuff just like it says in their, logo
and it's been going on. Forever two stores down my,

around and if you have an, opportunity find one of
those stores close to you and go in and talk
to anybody in there about anything to do with shooting,

there's a gun store on every. Corner carterscountry dot com

everybody walking through there is a gun, enthusiast and if
they see something they, like they'll ask about, it and
he'll get a little piece of, it and you get
(01:12:55):
the bulk of it when it, sells and it'll sell
for a fair and reasonable. Price and almost most gun,
stores i would, say Especially Shooter's corner And Carter's country
for that, matter or are not gonna hoodwink you and
tell you they got ten dollars for your gun when
they got a. Thousand they're gonna be straight up honest with.
(01:13:15):
You you'll see the bill of sale and all that, stuff
and that's a good comfortable way to know that it's
being done. Legally it's being done on the up and,
up and there's not going to be any worry for
you later. On, yeah i'd take haul them down.

Speaker 1 (01:14:06):
To that, Right that's What i'm taking the.
Speaker 2 (01:14:07):
Where the laws are, now you don't want to sell
it to a person that's forbidding the own, one so
just kind of you, know just be.
Speaker 5 (01:14:17):
Careful, Yeah and.
Speaker 1 (01:14:18):
There's no way for an individual really to even find
out if somebody is not allowed to own a, firearm is.
Speaker 5 (01:14:25):
There that's? Correct?
Speaker 1 (01:14:27):
Wow, yeah that's a good. Idea and, you being a gun,
dealer a gun buyer and, seller you have access to those,
records don't.
Speaker 2 (01:14:36):
You well well Do, yeah they don't provide us with
A you can't check a firearm out to see if it's.
Stolen there is some there are some websites you go
to that and they're not pretty. Good but, yeah if
you've got some good friends in law, enforcement you can
(01:14:56):
get them checked. Out, yeah you, know because you don't
want to be you don't want to be pulled over
for a traffic ticket and be in possession of the stoven. Fiars, Lord,
no you're gonna get hooked up and go for the ride.
Speaker 1 (01:15:14):
Anyway, yeah, yeah and then you just got to explain yourself.
Out so let's talk about this tax suppressor, stamp WHICH
i just got an email from a guy who, said,
hey there's still a tax, stamp but it's zero dollars
starting next.
Speaker 2 (01:15:26):
Year, Right, well there won't be it won't be a
tax stamp because there won't be no tax.
Speaker 3 (01:15:32):
Paid that's a good. Point just be a.
Speaker 2 (01:15:34):
Stamp it would just be a you, know like the
old but there won't be a tax stamp on, it you,
know because they've done away with a two hundred dollars
tax on.
Speaker 1 (01:15:47):
It so do you think that's going to really boost
your suppressor?
Speaker 2 (01:15:50):
Sales it's already been, good you. KNOW i mean we've
moved quite a. Few but, uh when it comes after
the FIRST i don't know. How you, know a lot
of people already got. Them there's a lot of people getting,
them and but it may balk down the system a little,
(01:16:12):
bit you. Know, Yeah AND i don't, PERSONALLY i don't
see why there's any kind of paper where it's nothing
but a. Mustler, yeah you know why you have to do.
ANYTHING i know In europe there you're required to have,
them you, know and here you you have to go
through all this red tape and it's not anybody.
Speaker 1 (01:16:36):
For the for this. Audience there's a few people in
here who don't understand the difference between a suppressor and
what people see in the movies as a. Silencer this
doesn't silence.
Speaker 2 (01:16:45):
A, gun absolutely. Not there's there are a few circumstances
where there's some that with sub sonical can make it
Sound hollywood. Quiet, sure but, no you're not Gonna you're
still going to have the crack of the bullet breaking
the sound. Barrier, yeah that's but the initial blast that you're,
(01:17:08):
here you're, hearing gets damage from you won't be getting.
Speaker 1 (01:17:12):
That, yeah and that's that's what they're.
Speaker 5 (01:17:14):
For, yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:17:16):
Yeh and you don't have to worry about hauling all
that extra stuff.
Speaker 2 (01:17:19):
Around, Yeah i'm that's going to be a farm four you,
know when you go, in you, know you'll still do
a farm for electronically and, all you, know and so
it's going to be it's hopefully by the end of
the year there won't be. Anything i'm.
Speaker 1 (01:17:39):
Hoping, okay let me ask you this real quick and
then i'd let you. Go what's the average cost of
these things these?
Speaker 2 (01:17:46):
Days it depends for a twenty two one for twenty,
two which is one of the most popular suppressors people
by it just for twenty two long rifle, there you,
know and four to five hundred dollars, range you, know
and then for the for the thirty kel or five
(01:18:07):
five six, one depending on if it's a direct thread
or with a muzzle break on. There you, know they
range anywhere from in the high sevens to which is
some of the to, me the, best the best express
even by. Thunderbeasts and they they're up in an like
eleven twelve hundred.
Speaker 1 (01:18:28):
Dollars, okay all, right that's WHAT i needed to.
Speaker 2 (01:18:30):
Know.
Speaker 1 (01:18:30):
Man i'll let you get back to whatever you were
doing before we interrupted Your sunday Morning.
Speaker 5 (01:18:34):
Jerry you bet, yeah you take care Of, dug.
Speaker 1 (01:18:37):

WHERE i kind of picked it up, too is From,
bill and when he AND i just both said it almost,
simultaneously because that's the way we end most of our.
Conversations seven one, three two one two five seven ninety
email on, Me doug Pick, At iHeartMedia. Dot come on
the way out. Here tell you about cowboys and mesk
you again out there In belleville right there On Main,
(01:19:23):
street in that big new. Space they've been out there
since nineteen seventy. Nine now he's just got more. Space
he's got more people working for. Him more people building,
knives which opens up more time for him to build
beautiful custom, knives, which by the, way take a couple
of months at least to get out of that. Store it's,
you you place the, order you get in, line and
(01:19:44):
when it's, ready they'll let you. Know and what you're
going to get back is something absolutely positively. Amazing there's
no question about. It cowboy's been doing this for a
very long. Time and by the, way if you want
to take the family out there and to go out
there and maybe spend a little time down the street
and then want to do something fun as a, family
walk in there and say, hey can you show us
(01:20:04):
how to build a, knife and they'll take you back
there where the magic. Happens and before you leave, there
it's kind of first, come first, serve so that might
be a couple of people in front of, you but,
whatever it doesn't take that long to get in and
actually build your own knife that you can take home with.
You that's pretty. Cool they got folding, knives they got filet,
knives they got skinning, knives they got steak. Knives if
(01:20:27):
it has a blade on it and the blade it
tends to be sharpened when it's in. Use they probably
make them and sell them At Phoenix knives since nineteen
seventy nine forged in. Fire you've heard me say that
Before Phoenix knives P H e N I X Phoenix
knives dot. Com if you feel like shooting your guns
(01:20:50):

of the north and kind of makes the targets flap
off the, holders get out To American Shooting centers out
there On West. Parkway well out there. Today it'll be
a lot more comfortable today than it will be. TOMORROW

Dot Com Good.
Speaker 9 (01:22:12):
Heavens were that close to the. End you're trying to get,
Me Ohio silver out of. Here do you ever watch
that Show Lone? RANGER i Have Oil. SILVER i watched
it as a.
Speaker 1 (01:22:25):
Kid there were so many GREAT tv shows because there
were only just this very small. Handful, okay that's. Fine uh,
yes let's end that. Session that's what we were trying
to do. Earlier there we. GO i think that'll get
rid of.
Speaker 6 (01:22:43):
It.
Speaker 1 (01:22:43):
Frankie, yeah THE tv programs of yesteryear were, BETTER i
believe because there were so few, shows and there, were
it was easy enough to get the best writers for
that small number of. Shows now they're thousand channels and
(01:23:07):
every one of them's got their own little twist on
all kinds of weird.
Speaker 3 (01:23:10):
Things.
Speaker 1 (01:23:11):
UH i heard a comedian the other day describe REALITY
tv very, well you're, Trying you're putting people who aren't
actors into situations that are written by people who aren't
writers and expecting, them and they're doing what they think
you want them to, do not what they would normally.
(01:23:34):
Do so it's all reality television is just kind of
a giant. Farce would you, Agree frankie absolutely, That, yeah
these people Aren't this is not natural, reaction normal. Reaction
they're they're pandering to the, audience and they're they're doing
(01:23:55):
things that they would never do in real life probably
or things they would say and. Whatnot and IT'S i guess.
It you, know if people are wanting to sit there
and watch something that'll just make them numb to everything
else is going on around, them more power to. Them,
OKAY i want to get. Back i've only got a
couple of, minutes AND i want to get back to
What i've been talking about since this is the last
(01:24:16):
show of twenty twenty, five and WHEN i come back
for twenty twenty, six maybe we can just kind of
start the run there with some other things THAT i
wanted to talk. About but didn't quite get to. TODAY
i got that. ONE i got that, one got that.
One the drone, band how about the drone band for,
(01:24:36):
fishermen surf. Fishermen these are people who the only thing
they're doing is enabling them to put their baits farther,
out and they're using three five eight ten pound baits
to try to catch a big old, shark and they're
using drones to take them out because they can't cast
that giant rig very hard and very. Far it'd be
(01:24:59):
impossible to cast some of the baits that they use
into any water that would be where they could catch those.
Sharks so now it's illegal for them to do, That
but it's okay for a bass fisherman to look at
a screen that shows exactly where this big fish is
and they could just drop a lure straight. DOWN i
(01:25:22):
got a hunch that the forward facing sonar is doing
a lot more to aid the fishermen and catching a
fish than any drone ever could do unless it was
carrying forward facing. SONAR i, mean that makes no sense to,
me AND i hope THAT i hope that somebody will
take another look at that before it's all. Over by the,
(01:25:43):
way thanks to all of. You every one of you
who have called the, show have emailed or texted throughout
this past. Year by the, way twenty twenty five was
my twenty fifth year doing this outdoor show and a
quarter century behind this. Microphone is the advantage for me
is That i've learned so much from all of. You
(01:26:05):

that all of you have done to help me stay
on the. Air if you're interested in being part of
that next, year by all, means email me. Directly you
don't have to call anybody and talk to anybody else
about being involved in this. SHOW i will handle it,
myself AND i will handle you with kid gloves LIKE
(01:26:28):
i do all of my. CLIENTS i really love it
when people support. ME i do it AND i hope
you realize that somebody wrote me recently telling me these
shows like sitting on a porch with, friends just talking
about what's on our. Minds sometimes we all, agree sometimes we,
don't but we still keep getting together and we still
keep talking and sharing all the things we love to do.
Outdoors i'm going to keep it up in twenty twenty six.
