Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey thirty two on Sports Talk seven ninety The Doug
Pike Show. Thank you for listening. As promised, I want
to bring in a guy who I haven't talked. I
know I've run into him probably half a dozen times,
but I haven't talked to him. I know that also
in a long time, and that is Renee Renguel from
Golf Crest Country Club. He's a GM down there. Good morning, Renee.

(00:22):
How you doing man?

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Good morning Doug. Yeah, it's been a while. We talked
long years ago when I was playing the tour a
little bit.

Speaker 1 (00:29):
But it's been a while back when we were younger
and a lot better at everything we used to do. Huh,
isn't that the truth?

Speaker 2 (00:36):
Boy?

Speaker 1 (00:37):
So you are hosting a big event man, Golf Crest
country Club, the ram twenty twenty five. It says here
a Ramco Houston Championship. That's a really nice feather in
the Golf Crest cat, my friend.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
Yes, we're very excited. We got a call about three
months ago. They were looking for a site in South
Houston and our name came up him and visited the property.
We made an agreement and here we are. It's it's
it's quite a production there. It's a it has got
the full tour feel of it. They have a beautiful,

(01:12):
beautiful hospitality tent behind number eighteen. Golf course is in
great shape. Uh. They really treat the ladies coming in
to play well. And uh, obviously, as you know, a
big purse for them and we've got some big names,
so we're excited.

Speaker 1 (01:30):
Have an any of these afternoon showers gotten in the
way of your prep work? Are you on schedule? Is
everything ready to go?

Speaker 2 (01:37):
Everything's ready to go. Actually, some of these afternoon showers,
the ones that didn't wash away stuff, were really helpful. Obviously,
as you know, mother nature rain is much better than
the irrigation system. So uh, no, all good, We're we're
right on track. Nick Johnson, our director of agronomy, and
the team have done an amazing job. I think it's

(01:58):
going to show well. It's gonna me live Golf Channel
coverage three days in a row Friday, Saturday, Sunday next week,
and I think it's gonna show well on TV. And
I think that I think the ladies are going to
have a great competition with excellent course conditions.

Speaker 1 (02:13):
Yeah, I looked at the little cheat sheet that Lewis
sent over to me. You got one hundred and four
professional women coming in. It's a it's a team event,
twenty six teams of four. Talk about the format for
this thing, so they do.

Speaker 2 (02:27):
It's it's actually split format. It's a two million dollar
perse and half of the purse goes to the team competition.
Happened to the individual So they all play their own ball.
They're in four player teams if you will, and they
play their own ball Friday and Saturday best best kind
of a best ball companition combination for the winners. That's

(02:51):
one perse that's that ends on Saturday. But then there's
a cut and the low players believe it's sixty four
and ties move on to the Sunday final round for
the individual competition, and oh they're there. It's exciting. It's
it's really it's kind of a unique, unique format for

(03:12):
them trying to change it up a little bit with
with a lot of prize money.

Speaker 1 (03:16):
And it's it's a different tour. It's this p IF
Global Series which is part of that European Women's Tour
right correct.

Speaker 2 (03:24):
So it's it's actually an official Ladies European Tour event.
It has it has LPGA star power. Uh So there
are LPGA players playing in it. Uh, Charlie Hole is
coming to play, Alison Lee, some some very talented ladies.
So it's it's it's it's backed by Golf Saudi. Uh.

(03:48):
They're trying to help promote obviously golf around the world.

Speaker 1 (03:52):
Uh, so they help out.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
They wanted to these ladies who travel all over the world.
So uh, you know, uh, Houston can can witness some
of these some of these very talented ladies that are
not on the LPGA Tour that are on the Ladies
European Tour. So their next stop after US is China,
So they had to China after It's a tournament.

Speaker 1 (04:15):
Yeah, it's a.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
Five tournament series and one of the stop series in Houston.
Houston this year, and we're very excited.

Speaker 1 (04:22):
Didn't Allison Lee just have a baby this year or something?

Speaker 2 (04:26):
You know? I don't know think so know. All I
know is she can play. I looked at the record
when when she was announced. It's like, wow, she could go.

Speaker 1 (04:32):
That's all that matters. Really, if you're in a golf tournament,
it doesn't matter whatever else you got outside of that.
Right man, oh man, this is gonna be probably I
would think the first and only chance this year for
us to see a lot of these players, especially the
ones from Europe and elsewhere around the world.

Speaker 2 (04:47):
Right, yeah, and yeah, and I was told so. So
two things here to note for for your for your
listeners is what you know, we we have I think
the entire team for the Solheim Cup from Europe here.
So so the best the best players from from the
European side are going to be on property. This does

(05:10):
they do get world ranking points uh for this competition
and Soheim Cup points. So uh, there's a lot of steak,
a lot of stakes for these ladies to play well.
And uh and obviously along with the purse, it's a
it's a big purse for them. It's basically a standard
LPGA purse. But for the Ladies European Tour, this is
this is one of their bigger.

Speaker 1 (05:30):
Personesnenguel GM at Golf Crest at Houston Country Club. Talk
about the Aramco presidents out there. What kind of a
sponsor have they been for you? Oh, unbelievable.

Speaker 2 (05:41):
The entire the the the entire group. Uh uh, there's
a there's a group behind the scenes. It's uh, we're uh,
we are fifty four. The l E T officials, Golf Saudi.
Uh they they this is they go, they go all in.
This is unbelievable. We were acting something nice. They have

(06:01):
gone above and beyond uh with a field. They have
a fan zone for right behind the clubhouse. There's a
little putting uh putting track a Uh, there's gonna be
live music, food trucks, Uh, entertainment, There's gonna be live
live music. It's it's really it's really impressive. I've been

(06:22):
I've been so impressed with with how they conduct their
business in their entire team or nothing but professionals. And
and uh, it's gonna be a great week. I think.
I think, I think, Uh, anybody who who has time
to ten should should come out. Uh. You can just
google a Ramco Houston Championship and it'll lead you right
to where the tickets can can be uh can be bought.

(06:44):
And I think kids are free. Uh I don't know
exact age. I think maybe twelve and under kids are free,
and you know, getting to watch these ladies and and
they'll be there'll be a lot of spectators. But it's
not gonna be like the PJA Tour where you have
to fight the crowds and you can get up up
close and personal and and really watch watch these ladies
hitt and and and go about their business. And I

(07:06):
think it's I think it'd be great, uh for young
kids as well for all golfers who who want to
get a closer field.

Speaker 1 (07:12):
Renee rang Gel, I know the club's ready. I've known
you long enough and and well enough even since it's
even despite we hadn't talked in a while. I know
you got the club ready. But it's Pairland ready to
be in the international spotlight.

Speaker 2 (07:27):
We've had a lot of meetings with the city of Pirland, Uh,
so I believe, I believe we are. The city has
really stepped up as well. You know, there's gonna there's
some off off site parking with uh some nice uh
transportation into the club. But they they've been very helpful,
uh city, Uh you know, the the mayor, the city manager.

(07:49):
Everybody has just been open arms and and and really
want uh want wants to go well as as does
the club. So it's it's I think, uh, I think
we're ready and and uh you know it's it's it's
it's it's pretty impressive. You know, they have a they
put up a tent with a workout and stretch facility
right behind the clubhouse, I mean right behind the driving

(08:09):
range for the players, and the hospitality tent like a
like a TOJN and and it's uh, all the offices
they bring on site. It's it's really it's really neat
and and the city paril has been very supportive to
make sure this this goes well.

Speaker 1 (08:24):
It's like and not in any way derogatory, but it's
like the circus coming to town in that there are
so many people working behind the scenes to get everything ready,
to make it just right so that when these women
come to town they can focus on their golf. And and
you you mentioned something a minute ago, it's not going
to be an overwhelming crowd. You will be able to

(08:47):
get close to the players. You will be able to
to hear the conversations between them and their caddies, and
to to walk not well to walk outside the ropes,
but the ropes are a little closer and it's a
little more comfortable for these these tournaments, aren't they.

Speaker 2 (09:02):
That's right, and that's the way they want it. This
is this is the way they want it. They want
to interaction. I think if the way they have it
laid out with you know where the ropes are going
to be. Yes, you get you get up close and
personal with them, and and and and being able to
to be able to to walk around and watch without
big crowds and having a having a you know, weave

(09:25):
in and out of crowds. I've done that, you know,
watching the Houston Open and obviously they're in the majors
and and all that kind of stuff. This is this
is going to be real special for for those who attend.

Speaker 1 (09:34):
Special for prayer Land too, for sure. Renee, thank you
so much.

Speaker 2 (09:38):
Question.

Speaker 1 (09:38):
Yeah, thank you for your time, man. I really do
appreciate I kind of know you got your hands full
here a week count.

Speaker 2 (09:44):
Man, a few balls in the air, but we'll get it.

Speaker 1 (09:48):
We'll get it going, all right, buddy, go to work.
Thank you so much, Renee.

Speaker 2 (09:51):
Right, Hey, thank you good talking to you. And anytime
you want to talk give me all.

Speaker 1 (09:55):
I'm most send you a text. I hadn't played down
there in a hundred years. I got to come see you.

Speaker 2 (09:59):
You can come, hey. It's it's great love to have
you bring your group out. We'd love to have you.

Speaker 1 (10:02):
Thank you man, By bye.

Speaker 2 (10:04):
Thank you thank you, Okay, bye bye.

Speaker 1 (10:07):
All right, man. I knew he was busy, and I
appreciate that ten minutes of his life. When he's got
a major international event coming up in six days. Yeah,
he's got a full plate every day. That's gonna be
a good event. There's no question about it. It's gonna
be a good event. And the women's events, I can
say from experience, are very relatable for the average guy

(10:31):
who plays golf. These women, you got to just swallow
your pride. Okay, they hit it. A lot of those
women hit it a lot farther than you and I do.
I don't care who you are. They hit it. All
of them hit it a lot straight than most of
us do. But what I like is that they find
themselves probably a little more often than the PGA Tour

(10:53):
players with shots into greens. They may miss a green
somewhere and have little chips and pitches and stuff that
you and I would have playing. And I love watching
them and watching how they set up for those shots,
watching how they read their putts, all these things that

(11:14):
I'm a little more comfortable with comparing to my game
than that of ry McElroy and Scottie shuffler, they're on
another planet. Okay, everybody who's going to play in the
Ryder Cup another planet. But the women's events, really, the
professional women are way better than you and I probably

(11:35):
will ever be, but they hit the ball about the
same distance, so they end up with the same types
of shots that you and I hit. It's really if
you could just swallow your pride and forget that you're
a dude and just go out there and watch these
women navigate these courses, Watch how they set up, watch
where they're aiming. Because they're professionals, they know not to

(11:58):
shoot at every pen. They know to figure out where's
the best place they can put the ball so that
they'll be in good shape after that ball gets there.
I could go on and on about how interesting it
is to compare their games to ours.
