(00:01):
This is the Doug Pike Show, brought to you by American Shooting Centers Guns
Shooting at Instruction since nineteen eighty nine. Now Here's Doug Pike. It Saturday
morning edition of the program starts rightnow. Good heavens, who's been sitting
in this chair and turned this volumeup to? Bloody? Ear man?

(00:22):
I don't know who this is?Whom Who would it have been? Maybe?
Would it have been one of theAdams, Adam Snyder, Adams family
boys, Melvin Melly. You don'tknow who's in here in the afternoons yet,
do you. It's okay, itdoesn't matter whoever it was, Holy
Cal, it just about blew myhead off, Absolutely blew my head off.

(00:42):
That's okay. That's what I getfor coming in sideways and not checking
the not checking the levels on thesethings. A lot going on in the
out of doors. If you missedthe show. This past week, Cal
and I were down in Moody Gardens, host to seeing the Fly Fishing Film
Festival. That went absolutely fantastic.I think I was really happy to be

(01:07):
able to do that again, andthe films this year lived up to expectation,
and the final one, which iswhen I had gotten inside information from
the people at Coast to del maron what exactly it was going to be
about, but I didn't realize howcool it was going to be. It

(01:29):
was something called Marlin Fly and itwas a project that Coasta jumped into just
both feet and said, yeah,we're all into help with this. And
it was about some striped marlin overon the west coast down in New Mexico
that were caught and satellite tagged. And now the information is coming back from

(01:53):
those tags, and I don't knowhow many of them are still left out
there, but it was pretty fascinatingto watch these big, big, big
fish be duped into eating these flies, and where they were and when they
were there over off Baja made itpretty easy. Really. They're the stripe
marlin. If you've never caught one, it's kind of it's kind of a

(02:14):
cross between it's a middle ground betweenPacific sailfish, or actually, let's let's
call it a middle ground between Atlanticsailfish and blue marlin. They're much much
bigger than an Atlantic sailfish, butdon't get nearly so big as a blue
marlin, and they do get big, couple of hundred pounds and change.
I'm not sure exactly what the biggeststripe marlin is. They get big,

(02:38):
but they're they're doable for someone whowants to say they caught a marlin but
doesn't want to sit in a chairfor five hours or three even or two.
They can be they can be tamedin relatively short time. And I
got to I got to do thata lot when when I was at the

(02:58):
paper and going down to Mexico sooften. Joe Dogget and I made a
lot of trips together down that wayand had an absolute positive blast every time
we went down there. There werea lot of really good fishing fleets down
there, then, some better thanothers. Some of the little truths that
they don't want you to know aboutdown there, the less fable, the

(03:21):
less famous, the less successful charteroperations down there. I've watched this happen.
There would be one of the charterfleets down there, one of the
ones we were using. If Ican remember the name of it, I'll
tell you it may still be inexistence. They were very good. They
took care of their equipment, Theychanged the line on their reels regularly.

(03:44):
They did everything they could to makesure that in case somebody actually hooked a
really big fish, monumentally big, they'd have a good chance of catching it.
Some of the other outfits didn't havequite so much money. They cut
corners, they did this and that, and I watched more than once I
watched line get stripped off of reelsand just tossed unceremoniously into a garbage can.

(04:10):
These are big reels and big linefifty and above. And the people
from a couple of boats down wouldscurry over there and grab that line out
of the trash can and use thatto refill their reels. So, man,

(04:30):
a little dorado comes along, abenita, maybe a little small yellowfant
or something, not gonna be aproblem. They're not going to bust that
line. But man, if theyever hooked anything really big, their clients
were probably going to be sorely disappointed. But I digress, and it skittered
halfway down the continent. Let's getback up around here. I am ready

(04:51):
for this ugly rain cycle to absolutelycome to an end. Only a twenty
percent chance today, which is certainlybetter than what we've dealt with in the
last four or five days. ButI'm not so sure I believe them I
just can't wait to see the sunagain. It can't come fast enough.
Even I don't care how hot itgets for a couple of days. No,

(05:14):
I'll take that back. I docare about how hot it gets,
because I know what's coming, andI don't want to start any not even
an hour before we have to.For those of you up north of the
city, by the way, Itruly hope you came through these past few
days dry and safe, which isabout all we can really hope for,
just try and safe and no realdamage done to anything or anybody. And

(05:38):
I know some of you didn't comeout of this thing clean, and I
hope that. I just hope thatyou can get patched up and get back
to whatever it is you do youwere doing before all this rain came,
and enjoy your life a little bitmore again, maybe some of your friends
got flooded. To be sure toreach out and anybody you know up there.

(06:00):
An email out the other day, actually trying to make sure that one
of my listeners was all good andfound out. Yes, indeed all good
and so was that was music tomy ears. Certainly, I'm gonna check
something real quick while I'm thinking aboutit. TikTok, TikTok. I'm sorry,
sorry, sorry, Okay, I'llgo back to that in a little
while. Huh, there's an emailfrom Coast to Delmar again about that good

(06:23):
timing on their parts. I don'tknow that. Surely, surely that's coincidence.
Surely the AI in this world isn'tthat sophisticated that if I just talk
about something on the radio, maybeif all of you all at once get
a CDM email something from Coast toDelmar, then that would be really weird.

(06:46):
AI. By the way, I'mgonna do an interview on that in
the next few days over on fiftyplus to talk about how much it's being
used. We're using it in someaspects of what we do here at iHeart
and one of those things, it'slike any other technology. It's like the
Internet. There's gonna be some reallyreally good with it, and there's going

(07:09):
to be some people taking advantage ofthat to do really really bad things.
So I guess really for this audiencea little more savvy than my fifty plus
audience overall with technology, because alot of the younger people in my audience
here grew up with it. Theygrew up with the electronics. My peeps
did not, and we are. We're willing to learn new things. We're

(07:33):
catching up. But unfortunately for alot of us, technology and the bad
guys are staying one step ahead ofour ability to sniff out rats. And
so just if you've got you gotanybody you know who spends a lot of
time on the internet more than youthink they should, maybe ask them what

(07:55):
they're doing and make sure they're notgetting hustled by somebody halfway around the world
and to sending them money or somethinglike that. Much rather have their money
in their own pockets to I don'tknow, buy groceries around here, all
right, So that's taken care of. It's okay. Yeah, the bottom
line on this weather is it's gonnapass. Okay, We've got and we

(08:18):
got another four or five days ofstrong wind still to deal with. But
it's gonna pass, and we're gonnaget into our eventually into our summer cycle
and oh my gosh, what's thatgonna be. And we'll get through that
too. I was gonna interview, speaking of the weather and whatnot. I
was going to interview Captain Jennifer Weaverfrom the Parks and Wildlife Department this morning.

(08:43):
She heads up the unit that performedthat big sweep up the Sealy big
bass splash on Sam Raber in thispast week, and unfortunately for us,
she got called away, as didmost of the game wardens in this state,
to help with get people caught inthe flood water around here up to
higher ground and safety, which isway more important than having a chat with

(09:07):
me about a bass tournament. I'mgoing to talk about that. I absolutely
am gonna talk well, in fact, I'll do it now. I'll tell
you what's been. Here's a deal. This tournament has been going on for
years, actually decades. It startedrelatively early when I was at the newspaper,
and I remember it, pardon me, I remember it gathering larger and

(09:30):
larger crowds and more and more peoplecoming up there, because not only do
you have a chance to win reallybig prizes, but there are hourly prizes
too that if you scratch out oneor two of those during the event,
it certainly pays for your gas moneyand your motel and whatever it was you
were, and your cans of Viannasausage and sprites and whatever it is you

(09:50):
have in the boat with you toget you through it, and so at
this year's edition because it just madesense from a logistical standpoint. If you're
gonna go looking for stolen goods, you go to a place where there are
a lot of goods, and noplace in Texas probably gathers more amateur,

(10:16):
regular folks fishermen all at the sameplace on the same weekend than the Sealy
Big Bass Splash. And I'm notknocking the tournament at all, that's none
of none of anything to do withthis investigation that went on up there has
to do with the tournament. That'sjust people having a lot of fun,

(10:37):
trying to trying to make some money, and we're all doing that. But
what they went looking for was stolenproperty. And the headlines, they were
splashy headlines all over the place. As soon as this was revealed that this
had been going on, more thanone hundred thousand dollars in gear seized,

(10:58):
which which sounds like a lot andit is. It's a lot of money.
But in the boat world today,in the motor world today, and
even in electronics today, you don'thave to have a really tall stack for
it to add up to one hundredthousand dollars. So I made a phone
call at the behest of Buddy mine, who called and asked, Hey,

(11:20):
man, what do you think. What do you think they actually got for
this one hundred thousand you got?Any way you can find out? I
think I do. Made a phonecall. Actually, I send an email,
sent an email, and I gotanother email back, and then there
was a phone call. And bottomline is what they came up with was

(11:41):
where are my notes? It wasa grand total of two boats and ten
motors that were seized just to startan investigation into the legitimacy of who had
them and why they had them.No charge has been filed yet, but
that one hundred grand was covered upby two boats and ten motors, and

(12:05):
that was it. And I suspectthat none of that stuff is terribly new,
because if it were, you couldprobably with a good tournament ready bass
boat today, just the boat, not the trailer, not the gear that's
in it, not the truck that'spulling it, just the boat and some

(12:28):
electronics, you could easily jump overone hundred grand. I won't. I'm
not that interested in I'm not thatinterested in owning a six figure bass boat.
But if it's you and you cando that. More power to you,
More power to you. All Right, we're gonna talk a little bit
more about that when we get backin a whole lot more about a whole

(12:50):
lot more things coming out of thisrain, that the inspirity's going on up
in the woodlands. They're finally theyare out now first tea times where at
seven o'clock this morning and going offboth these that'd be number one and number
ten, and man, they gota lot of ground to make up on
the way out Carter's Country. Yougot Mother's Day coming up, okay,
And we don't live in exactly thesafest world we've lived in. And I

(13:15):
would like for all of you toconsider, maybe consider if Mom would be
up to it, a concealed carryclass for Mom. The folks from Carter's
Country wrote me a few days agoto remind me that they're doing these concealed
carry classes. And then you say, Doug, you don't have to have
a permit to carry anymore. Well, that may be. However, there

(13:39):
is a lot that's involved with that, a lot of legality that you need
to know about if you're going tocarry, regardless of when, where and
how you think you ought to dothat. You need to know what you
can and cannot do when you shouldand should not draw your weapon where you
can and can't actually care. Thereare still places in this state, plenty

(14:01):
of them where you can't take yourgun, and you got to make sure
you're on the right side of thelaw before you someone who's just trying to
defend themselves winds up in jail somedayor in court for a year trying to
try to explain why you were whereyou were and you did what you did
with that Kate. With that courseunder your belt, you'll know, you'll

(14:22):
know the law. You'll you'll showthem that you are proficient with that weapon
as well. And it's not it'snot a hard task. You don't you
don't have to knock the wings offa fly at one hundred yards or anything
like that. Uh. I've beenassured by the people at Carter's Country that
just a couple of lessons if ifyou're unfamiliar, if you're not really comfortable
shooting, a couple of lessons canget you into proficiency range where you don't

(14:45):
have to worry about that either. It's a great course for anybody really who
is concerned with their own safety orthat of their families, and they do
them every weekend up there at thetresh Week store on the north side of
town. The ones got the bigrange on it. Carter's Country dot com.

(15:31):
Talk seven ninety. Back to theDoug Fike Show. Let's see he's got

(15:54):
an email or a text from myniece over in South Carolina wondering how we're
doing well. Apparently our flooding overhere has made the national news, and
she was concerned for me, asa good niece would be for her old
uncle. Yeah, we're okay.I sent her back a message. We're

(16:15):
okay. It's mostly way up northof where I live, and but you
know, here, here's the dealwith that kind of weather Tomorrow it could
be our turn. It could beanybody's turn. It's every time one of
these nasty things comes through, it'salways somebody's turn. Let me go talk
to Dave and see what's up.What's going on. It's not working again.

(16:37):
Let me put him on hold,Melbourne. I need you to punch
him up here. I don't knowwhy this does this? There we go.
What's up, Dave? Hey,can you hear me? Okay,
yeah, hey, Hey, here'sthe deal. Okay. My brother PJ.
See, he works for the countyover there around New Waverley, and
he said he's been out cutting trees, repairing rows and all that kind of

(17:02):
stuff. Yeah yeah, and uh, you know that, and that's part
of the job. And he lovesit, you know. I mean he
loves doing that kind of stuff. That's uh. And and and then all
our first responders and everybody, ifthey didn't do it, they wouldn't love
it, believe me, you know. And other piece. But now you're
on the oh, when you weretalking about catching him big fish, I

(17:26):
would tell the boat driver to justkeep backing up and let me keep really
back. All he's got to dois back up faster than that fish is
swimming away. From you and youcan get some line back on the rail.
Here's stuff though, man, AndI've been in tournaments and stuff where
the whole back, the whole cockpitis just full of water and it's scary.

(17:47):
Did you wear that? Did youwear that deal that you put on
your stomach? You know, thebelly thing that you put the fishing pole
in, and the tournament stuff whenwe had a true like a big blue
marlin or something, and you're sittingin a chair fighting the whole time.
You don't stand up and fight thosein a tournament. But yeah, for
other things, Yeah, I've wornthose belts a lot in my life.

(18:10):
Yeah. And then good thing too, because those rod butts will tear you
up. They will, Oh man, they bruises, man, hey,
and I hear, hey, Iknow exactly what you're talking about, because
you can get bruised just from droppinga big one pound weight down and then
pulling up and the catching a bunchof a big old thirteen pound red snapper
or something, you know, gettingbruce dropping your beer on your toe right,

(18:34):
Well that too, hey, Hey, Now listen to real quick at
St. Rose and Lima's Church overthere tomorrow, Stan Bruce and Paul Amrick,
who's probably listening right now. Theylove your show. It's gonna tail
Star is gonna be playing. It'sgonna be the Bizaarro over there. So
it's for a lot of benefits forchildren and stuff like that. And so

(18:59):
they're gonna be at one o'clock andthen I'll be lurking around here somewhere.
I'm up for anything with kids.Man, keep me posted on that.
Yeah, let me know how itgoes. Yeah, I'll let you know.
Yeah, because we'll be taking picturesand everything. I'll send you some
pictures, all right, Dave.I can't believe anybody wants to take a
picture of me. No, no, man, No, you're celet celebrity

(19:23):
anyway. I'm just like everybody else. Thank you. I see man.
Audios Audios Todave seven one three twoone two five seven ninety Email me Doug
pick at iHeartMedia dot com. Youknow, I got to thinking about this
whole thing up at sam Rayburn withthe bass tournament and the stolen gear allegedly

(19:45):
being found. Nothing's been nothing's beenwrapped up yet, and I'm not going
to accuse somebody anything till they sortit all out. But that one hundred
thousand dollars in what was it,two boats and ten motors, and that's
really that's probably some old stuff reallywhen you get right down to it.
So here's what I want to know. First of all, I want if

(20:07):
you've got a pretty good way tokeep your stuff from getting stolen, I'd
love to hear from you. Ifyou've been a victim of theft on any
of your fishing equipment, I'd liketo hear from you. I haven't had
anything stolen from me in a longtime, knock on wood. And the

(20:29):
last time it actually happened with anythingof consequence was when I owned a bass
hunter boat years ago, and Ihad great fun the little two man plastic
boats that you put trollo motor onthe back or the front or whatever and
go fishing and have a blast.Well, here's what happened. In addition
to using it for fishing, Ialso used it during hunting season when I

(20:52):
was guiding on the prairie west oftown to ferry hunters across bar ditches and
whatnot where there were no bridges andwe needed to hunt on the north side
of the ditch and not the southside of the ditch. And the ditch
was full of water. Well,I would bring that little hunter or bass
hunter and we'd ferry people across there. I loaned it to a guy once

(21:14):
he took it out there. Heused it to get his hunters across the
bar ditch a bar ditch, Idon't even remember which one, and he
used it to get them back acrossthe bar ditch. And then he left
it there. He just left itin the field, not terribly far and
plainly visible from the road, anold country highway. And by the time

(21:41):
I could get out there to retrievemy boat, because he just wouldn't be
bothered, the boat was gone. And that represented a pretty significant investment to
me at the time, and itreally it bothered me a lot. Actually,
it bothered me quite a bit.And yeah, I've even offered to
pay me a dime for that boat. I'm I'm tempted. Really, I'm

(22:04):
tempted to say his name, becauseI remember it very vividly, but I
won't. Maybe he listens if hedoes, and I'll just call him out
right now for being exactly what heis. And you can fill in the
blanks on that one seven one three, two, one two five seven ninety.
Email me Dug Pike at iHeartMedia dotcom. I am also interested.

(22:26):
And this is this is kind ofa sidebar to that story from up at
sam Rayburn. In places where whereyou've gone or you recall and won't go
there again because you got ripped offthere, maybe you had something stolen out
of your truck at the boat ramp. Maybe you had your trailer stolen.
I remember, oh, one ofthe guys, Rick Cursey, I think

(22:48):
it was many many years ago, left his trailer at the ramp, hooked
up to his truck, and somebodycame by and stole his trailer. Somebody
else I remember lost truck and trailerfrom a boat ramp while they were out
running a guided trip. They justall this thievery, These scummy thieves around
who want to just take other people'sthings, and at some point in their

(23:15):
lives, I hope they get what'scoming to them. And I'm not wishing
them really bad things, not really, but anybody who's who's stealing these days
might probably want to think twice aboutit. I did see a funny thing
on Facebook a couple days ago,I believe it. I believe it was
two days ago. Anyway, somepeople that had trouble with not once but

(23:37):
twice some guys coming up and tryingto steal their catalytic converters when that was
a hot thing. I don't knowif it still is, but in any
event, they set up a cameraout there and the next time these two
guys showed up and they let themgetting completely up under the car. And
then they being the paintball enthusiasts, they were ran outside and went to just

(24:02):
Pelton. These guys on the thighsand in the stomach, all that was
out from under the car that theycould see, and some even some very
special places. Those guys probably wishthey hadn't left exposed, and they just
unloaded their paintball guns on these guys. Let me go talk to David here.
Get this mouse working, Let metry it. Let me try it

(24:23):
one time. Hi, David, what's up? Man? Yeah? Real
quick, I know you're getting readyfor breakfa real quick. Deer camp theft
is a significant problem. Yes,I had a had a friend. He
had an r V trailer stolen offof private property where we hunted. What

(24:45):
part of Texas was that in EastTexas? Texas? Yeah? East Texas?
Yeah, and we all concluded it'sprobably being used in the crack situation.
Now. Also, I will notput it. I will not put
anything on my trut that might hintto someone that I have may have firearms

(25:06):
in my gun. And yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah idea. And
insurance insurance is really affordable. I'vegot all of my farms insured. It's
got a less than one hundred dollarsevery six months or something like that.
Very much. But okay, here'sgood insurance available for all that. So
anyway, lets you go in thebreak. All right, Well, thank
you. I appreciate the call,David. That's good, good stuff.

(25:30):
Absolutely, thank you. Some notes, yeah, I'm gonna make some notes
during the break, just from whatyou told me right there. Thanks a
lot man. All right, wedo we need to go ahead and take
that break, and we will. And on the way out, let me
just tell you right now about blackHorse Golf Club. They're up on Fry
Road. Now, take two ninetyto Fry Road. If you're coming anywhere
from kind of in town. Ifyou're a little farther south, you can

(25:51):
jump on ninety nine and go upthat way toward two ninety and then there's
a cutover at I think it's Bridgeland. There's a road that cuts through over
to Fry Road and you can gostraight up from there anyway. Once you
get there, you'll find two fantasticgolf courses. You'll find two dozen people
who want to make sure you havea good time. If your swing stinks

(26:11):
right now, and some of ushave bad swings, well most of us
do, and what you need todo then is take some time down it's
far into the range and get thosekinks worked out of that swing. Maybe
become a member. Black Course isa daily fee facility, but there is
a membership option that gets you someadvantages over anybody else who comes in.

(26:33):
What you get is preferred tea timesand get a little extra time to make
your tea times before they open upto everybody else. You get unlimited range
time, which is fantastic. Andif you want to look cool, you
can get some of that gear inthe pro shop at a discount off the
prices that Mere Mortals pay. Stilla great place for big tournaments. Or

(26:55):
maybe it's just you and a buddylook outside, you know, hey,
it's quit raining. Finally, let'sgo play a little golf and I would
suspect that as good as as wellas black Horse drains, they're probably going
to be open. It might becart pass, I'm not sure, but
whatever it is, if the courseis open, I know you'll have a
good time. Black Horse Golf Clubdot com is the website. Go there,

(27:17):
check it out, make your owntea time right now, black Horsegolf
Club dot Com. I haven't lookedlately at the radar, but when I
looked earlier. Hold on, letme just double check real quick. I
want to I want to get alot of things done. I got like
ten pounds of sugar to put inabout a five pounds sack this morning.
All right, let me go andgo to the phones. I'll talk to

(27:37):
Rick first. I'll get to mystory about who I met at the Fly
Fishing Film Festival in a minute.I want to go ahead and catch his
phone call. What's up? Rick? Just quick? On your your subject
of stamp. I would wonder ifKEPNW would furnish a state regional map in

(28:07):
some kind of order that would saywhere the most improct Okay, it's a
crime report, yeah, meaning beinggiven me of equal great minds. I'm
going to agree with you on yourhunch. Yeah, Okay, been all

(28:27):
over the state dealing with ranches andproperty, and I ain't ashamed to say
it from my experience is fast inthis subject statewide forty five. I'm sorry,
folks, but I just don't likegoing east to forty five. And

(28:49):
I mean it's just I'm just basedit on fact, right, and uh
so, you know, but Iwould be interesting to uh now, okay,
I would say one last thing onthat subject, all right, for
for all of that green country eastforty five, I will say this that
it is way better now then usedto be. It's left bad taste in

(29:14):
a lot of people's mouths, undersaid, I do, and you're right
there there used to it used tobe a whole lot worse than it is
now, but only because there's beena major ramp up of enforcement up through
that way. And I'm glad it'sbeen done because it Yeah, I've had
my own experiences up there. Ihave in East texas well. One of
the big changes, Doug that inmy mind, that made it start to

(29:38):
get a little better was the valueof the land number one. Sure.
But the main thing is is whenthey outlawed hunting, right because those guys
don't know what a fence is,and they don't jump fences. They kind

(29:59):
of And wherever the dog goes chaseis here. They're going with it before
they're always lost and they can hearthe dog, but they can't find a
dog, and they're just looking fortheir doubt. Yeah, so same old,
the same art. You know.I think they can fill a class
to learn how to say all that. Anyway, I'll let you go have
a good ride, all right, man, you two audios. Yeah.

(30:21):
East Texas got a bad reputation along time ago. I will most definitely
agree that it's much better now thanit used to be. There were there
have been more than one. There'sbeen more than one sting operation in East
Texas, and over the years Iwas at the paper and covering that kind
of stuff, I heard about alot of them, and there was a

(30:44):
lot of bad stuff going on,fishing, hunting, all of that.
Anything to do with the outdoors,it was. It was not. It
was not a game law friendly region. But that has changed, in part
because of the value of the land. In part, I think because just
an overall education of the people whowho maybe were doing some of this and
didn't they'd only been they'd only learnedone way, and that was kind of

(31:08):
the wrong way. And I thinkit's changed. I'm not gonna I'm not
gonna knock the people who are therenow, but for a long time it
was rough. The person I wantedto mention, I'm at the film festival
on Friday, and I'm seeing allthese young people, older people, middle
aged people. Everybody's filing in,and I'm just I'm thrilled to see the

(31:32):
families. There are three generations inmost of the families that are showing up.
It's mom and dad of one ortwo kids, and then it's their
parents, the grandparents of the littlekids. And it's just fantastic. And
on Sunday when we actually had asignificantly larger crowd on Sunday, two different

(31:52):
totally different presentations of films, totallydifferent films each night, which I think
is pardon a big part of whathelped draw the crowds we got. And
I know they'll do that next year. They'll figure out a way they'll do
the same thing next year, andwe'll have an even bigger turnout because the
people who were there this year willtell their friends, no question about it,

(32:15):
and I'm gonna tell you guys thatonce I learn about when it's gonna
be, I'm gonna insist that theystart giving me tickets right then, and
we're gonna get a big piece ofthis audience in there. It was a
blast. So anyway, on Saturdaynight, standing out front and just kind
of watching the people come in andtalk to the vendors who were down there.

(32:36):
And we had a great bunch ofpeople representing all kinds of good things
in fishing and fly fishing and conservation, all of them sitting right out there
in that main hall outside the theater, eager to talk to anybody who would
stop and talk to them. Anda man and his son come walking up
to me, and this little boy, I'm guessing he could have been anywhere

(33:00):
from about nine to eleven or twelve, I'm not sure. I didn't ask
his age, didn't ask his ageat all, but they just come walked
up and said hi. I said, Hi, how are you? I'm
glad you're here, and how youlike it so far? And I had
seen him on Friday, That's whyI knew that this was their second night.

(33:21):
They were there for the weekend. They stayed at the hotel. They
do great packages at Moody Gardens forthis thing, and great man, we're
loving it. And he turned tohis son and he said, he wants
to show you something great. Whatis it? He opens it. He's
wearing a fly fishing vest, whichtells me, first of all, he's

(33:42):
neck deep in it already. He'sate up with fly fishing. And he
unvelcrows. I don't know what youcall that whatever. He opens this velcrow
closed pocket on the chest of hisfly fishing vest, and there since this
beautiful well it's called a redfish crackfly. And I said, that's pretty nice.

(34:05):
Man. Where'd you get that?He tied it himself that day.
He tied it himself that day.He is that fired up about fishing and
that for so, I guess Grandpamay have brought his stuff down the tied
fly. I don't know what itwas, but the bottom line is Jack
had tied this fly. Young man'sname is Jack. He tied that fly
himself, and he wanted to showit to me, And that meant a

(34:29):
tremendous amount to me, because itwould have been perfectly fine if he had
just shared it with his grandfather andhis dad and his sister, and his
mom and his grandmother, because thatwas just something kind of he did and
it tie fly fly tying is alittle bit of a personal thing unless you're
doing it commercially. You do thesebecause it's therapeutic, because it gives you

(34:51):
something else to fish with, becauseand there's a great sense of accomplishment.
Believe me, I used to buildmy own rods. I've actually tied a
few flies in my day and lot, though I'm no experts, certainly it'd
be it just looks like a watof stuff on a hook, basically.
But the bottom line is there's agreat sense of self satisfaction when you're using

(35:12):
a rod you built yourself to catchfish, or lures you made yourself to
catch fish. There's a little bonusin that Jack's already started. He's already
so far ahead of where I wasat ten. I was still catching frogs
in the ditch when I was ten, and I had no idea. My
dad wasn't much of a fisherman, and he certainly enjoyed taking me fishing.

(35:34):
He got great pleasure from that andtold me so throughout the years. But
this was different. This kid issomeone who is already. He already values
the resource, and he values hisability to connect to it by tying his

(35:57):
own flies. By the time thatkid's fourteen, I bet you he's building
his own rods. I wouldn't besurprised at all. I really hope they
come back next year. And ifanybody knows this little boy, he's a
blond headed kid like I was whenI was his age, wears glasses,
and his name's Jack, and Iwould really like to stay in contact with

(36:21):
him. I didn't get any contactinformation unfortunately. There Actually, actually I
think they the family, may haveposted a picture on Facebook. I'm gonna
go back and find it, andI'm going to try to reconnect with Jack
and encourage him to keep doing this. And and boy, I was just
so impressed by him. I feltso much better about the future. Long
after I'm gone. Jack's gonna bearound a long long time. And I

(36:45):
felt so much better after I'd methim. Okay, look, we're holy
cow, we're almost at the topof the hour here. I don't want
to make us too late, butI've got a lot of stuff still to
talk about between now and ten o'clockwhen we have to when we have to
check out. We'll take this firstbreak on the way out. Shooter's Corner
Palmer highwa at twenty ninth Street downin Texas City, owned by Jerry and
JTK. I'm gonna try to getdown there either today or tomorrow, I'm

(37:08):
not sure which. I've got somebusiness to take care of down there.
I want to take a couple ofthings down there and get them to work
on them for me. Shooter's Corner, it's just an old school gun store,
basically on the south side of town. They're way south side of town.
These guys know their stuff, Theytake their time. They're gonna make
sure that anybody in the store isgonna make sure you get exactly what you
want, exactly what you need, whether you're a serious shooter and you've been

(37:34):
shooting all your life, or you'rejust brand new to guns and you need
some advice. Even Shooters Corner's gonnahelp you out. Great prices, great
people, family owned and operated forforty plus years. If you wear a
badge for a living, you geta discount too, which I think is
pretty cool. Palmer Highway at twentyninth Street. The Shooters cornertx dot com.
The Shooters cornertx dot com. Igot a couple of emails then I

(37:59):
want to go through one from Allenthat the best buddy of his who's passed
and I don't know how long ago, sorry for that, had two four
wheelers at his camp in Saint Augustine, and his Saint Augustine camp one day

(38:19):
comes up one ATV short four wheelersdisappeared about three years ago. I'm not
sure he ever got it back.He said he also had seen the episode
I was talking about about that youngman who had all that gear that got
stolen. Captain Scott. He canalways count on an interesting outdoor story from
Captain Scott. Brent. This isso funny. It's just really so funny.

(38:45):
Ah, So many years ago Ihad a lease in Cleveland, Cleveland,
Texas. We lost all kinds ofthings, the craziest and there's no
if any of you think you lostthe craziest thing from your dear lease and
you're about to send me an email, just don't lead off with hey,

(39:07):
I think I've lost the craziest thing, because Captain Scott's already won whatever trophy
we have for that, he's alreadywon it. Craziest was a brand new
outhouse. My dad and I hadjust built solid, very nice for an
outhouse. We even cut out theold traditional quarter moon in the door that's

(39:30):
going all the way, Scott. It was on the lease for maybe a
month. A month when it disappeareda few days later, there was a
picture of it on the front pageof the local paper. It was perched
like a crown, and I canjust envision this atop the homecoming bonfire.

(39:57):
So high school students had come alongand stolen the outhouse and used it as
if it was Christmas, it'd bea tree topper, but for homecoming it
was the top of the homecoming bonfire. Uh. If you think you can
beat that story, by all means, send the email right or and you

(40:22):
can just do as I've done.Is just kind of knelt at the knee
of the guy who just told methe craziest outdoor lease dear Lee theft story
I've ever heard. That was good, Scott. That was good timing too.
I don't think you've ever heard toldme that story before, but I'm
glad I know it now and I'llbe repeating it at least once today and

(40:45):
maybe more often. That was prettygood. Uh. Oh, Alan,
sent me an email. I don'teven want to look because I know this
is going to be really cool. He's buying something new today. Alan has
a penchant for hmm, okay, let me see what this is. These

(41:06):
look like now, And now I'mkind of confused because I thought I was
going to see a picture of twobeautiful guns. But it's something different.
And I wonder if these are trackingdevices. It's hard to tell in the
photographs as I'm looking on my littlelaptop which doesn't have a really big screen,
and it's just a teetotal mess sendme in, let me know what
those are actually. Let's see here, Uh, let's see if this is

(41:31):
something. Oh yeah, this isa fishing I definitely want to get into
this. This is from Carl.Carl weighs in and he's got some cajun
in his in his his Gmail address, So yeah, I'm I'm half caging
as well. So let's see whathappens here. Is they slaughter trout on

(41:51):
fishing piers at night? You smalltreble hooks and live shrimp gut hooked thousands
of undersized trout. I don't knowif it's thousands, maybe over the course
of some time. He recommends makingpeople use circle hooks with live bait,
which I think, frankly, ifyou could do that, if you could,
it's very hard to mandate fishing tackle, probably just as hard, especially

(42:17):
with hooks, probably just as hardas it is with bait offshore inshore.
It doesn't matter it's going. Ultimately, it's going to be a When I
take that back on a pier withpeer pressure spelled differently, anybody who wasn't
using the circle hook could be pointedout and run off the pier. I

(42:43):
don't have a problem with circle hooksat all. I strongly favor them,
as I do using barblous hooks whenI'm not using circle hooks. That circle
hook if you just have to usethe bar actually you need a barb but
if you're gonna use live bait tohold the bait on the hook, so
yeah, circle hooks end up rightexactly where they're supposed to be, as

(43:07):
as they were designed for use bycommercial fishermen who can't be there to set
a traditional hook. They just slideto the corner of the mouth, and
then as the fish swims away andtitans the line, that hook sets itself.
There's also concern from Carl about thethousands and thousands of gallons of raw

(43:29):
sewage that cruise ships dump into theocean. That's worth considering. I don't
I don't know how you solve thatproblem. Yeah, there's a lot of
heat. He brings up a lotof good points, a lot of good
points. Seven one, three, two, seven ninety. Appreciate that email,
Carl. I like it when somebodytakes the time to send something that's

(43:53):
that's deep and like, not deepis the ocean, but deeper than the
shallow end of the kiddie pool, that's for sure. He brings up a
lot of good points and a lotof these things one or the other.
I think people who would disagree couldtry to make a decent try to make
a Oh that's what that is.Uh huh okay, I see that's from

(44:17):
Allen. I'm just I'm a highto what I was looking at. I
think so anyway. I think peoplein any alone, those things you could
argue four or against pretty easily asbeing detrimental to the resource. But when
you start to look at them altogether, it becomes a bigger problem, and

(44:42):
you realize, how if only ifthere's only one guy beating a tambourine,
you can't really hear it. Butif four or five people are beating different
tambourines. Now, now you've gota band, and it's not it's not
as easy to ignore the music. And I it's gonna be difficult as we
move forward, and as young Jackmoves forward into adulthood ultimately and into a

(45:08):
position where maybe he can do somethingabout the resource. It's important to focus
on individual things, but you also, I think, can't lose track of
other things that you can piggyback intoyour thing and say, and if we
don't do something about this and this, then the fisheries, the wildlife,

(45:30):
whatever are gonna suffer. I'm nota big fan at all of windmills and
solar farms, not at all. They destroy open ground, and open ground
is where wildlife live. If youthink that there's any wildlife left underneath the

(45:52):
solar panels in a two thousand acresolar farm, pretty sadly mistaken. I
think they're running in there to getout of the heat in the summertime,
to get in the shade of asolar panel. You're sadly mistaken. Those
things just ooze heat and enough sothat I've read more than one story now

(46:15):
on how if these solar farms continueto get bigger and bigger, and some
already are enormous in size, They'reinfluencing weather. They're influencing weather, They're
making it hotter. They're causing someof the issues we're gonna have, and

(46:37):
that's a problem. Windmills. Idon't know where to start with windmills.
Let's see, they're killing birds bythe bajillions. Those blades are spinning around
at one hundred plus miles an hourout towards the ends of those blades.
The raptors that come in there totry to chase down something to eat are
looking down at the ground and justsoaring, not paying it, never threatened

(47:01):
in their lives by something crashing downon their heads, and they end up
dead on the ground from the bladehitting them. Plus those things leak oil,
plus they just don't function right alot of times. Next time you
drive down to Corpus Christie, payattention to the windmill farms along the way

(47:22):
and try to get an accurate countof how many of them are actually turning,
even on a windy day, andhow many of them are just sitting
there either oozing oil or already emptiedof oil that's on the ground now,
and then think about maybe how thatoil oozing onto the ground might look if

(47:45):
it were out in the ocean, out in the Gulf of Mexico where they're
planning on putting in thousands of squaremiles of windmills. Don't understand how we've
gotten so far down this rabbit hole, and that there are so many people
who don't understand the long term damagethat's gonna be done to pretty much everything

(48:09):
outdoors if this nonsense continues. Ohright, I'm just ranting and raving,
and let me climb down from asoapbox. I'm gonna need a Yeah,
I'm gonna have to get some oxygenwhen I get down from where I was
there. Bellville Meat Market great placeto take the family. I don't think
it's gonna rain anytime soon. Youprobably get out there, depending on where

(48:30):
you live. Of course, ifyou can get out there, great,
If you can't, go to thewebsite. What you're gonna find either way.
The only thing you miss at thewebsite is the smells. Oh it
smells so good in Belleville meat Market. Holy cow, all that sausage in
there two dozen plus flavors of pecansmoke, sausage, all the barbecue in
there. You can just buy lunchor dinner anytime, seven days a week,

(48:52):
think it's from ten am to sevenpm something like that. You can
get a lunch or a dinner outthere of anything that you would expect from
what I consider the finest barbecue placein town in Southeast Texas and the Hill
Country. Bellville's been out there fortysomething years now and always provided excellent wild

(49:14):
game processing, excellent beef, chickenand port cut the way you want,
excellent sausages and dry stick and jerky, and just fantastic items like that.
And they've expanded now. They've gotthose giant handmade tomalies. They've got cheeses
and appetizers, all these things justfor you, just for me and anybody

(49:35):
else who wants to go out there. They're about fifteen minutes north of Sealy,
fifteen minutes south of Hempstead on ahighway thirty six. Real easy to
find. Just get to the middleof Bellville, roll down your windows,
and then follow the barbecue smell, figure out where it's coming from. Just
drive towards Endo the smell and you'llend up in the parking lot at Bellville
Meet Market eighty five to fifteen groundbeef three fifty nine pound on a ten

(49:58):
pound bulk pack. That's a kindof an all day, every day special,
which is a lot better than you'regonna find around here. In the
quality of meat, you're gonna getas much better as well. Belleville MeetMarket
dot Com is the website Belleville MeetMarketdot com ninety. This is Sports Talk
seven ninety Houston Sports Online at Sportsseven ninety dot com. Back to the

(50:22):
Doug Pike show, Well done man. By the way, Alan sent me
a note a minute ago to remindus all that, and I thought this
was the case. But since Ididn't have it in front of me,
and I didn't have a chance togo run it down before I had talked
about it, I just sat onit, and sure enough he helped me
out. Cruise ships don't dump rosssewage in the ocean. They have elaborate

(50:44):
cleaning systems that, according to theman who sent me the email, render
that water darn near drinkable in hiswords, So not too worried about them.
But I got worries about all kindsof other stuff. Hey, John,
what's up. Hey? When youtalk about windmills, that gets me

(51:06):
going. I think, let's go. You know, when it comes I
know, when it comes to solarfarms and windmills, there's not one good
thing I can think and unicorns andleprechauns and yeah, I mean, you
know, you're right. You know, the solar is starting to affect weather
and it's just it. And andyou know, I get a kick out
of these people that called call me. You know, you get these calls

(51:30):
like, hey want you to trylooking at our solar offering and and I
say, well, it's not goingto work because I have trees and uh,
you know, the push shade atmy house. And they go,
we can, we can alter that, and I said no, I said,
you know, I I like trees. I like nature. Obviously you
don't, and uh, you knowyou kind of get into that. But
uh, you know, we dofluid analysis on on windmills and any any

(51:52):
engine really where I work in anduh, they are there. There are
a lot to maintain, and there'sall the environmental factors. I mean how
bad they are for the environment andeverything. Yeah, it's going to be
bad. I mean they do leak. They do have a lot of issues.
And when we start putting that stuffway out on the golf there,
I mean, it's worse than anyoil spill or anything that's ever happened.

(52:15):
Well. Well, and the issue, I think one of the issues of
putting them way out in the Gulfof Mexico is where which is where everybody
wants them. They don't want tohave to see them from the beach,
but way on in the Gulf ofMexico means that when one or two or
forty of them break down, itjust is that much more difficult to get
out there to fix them. Wellthat and you know, sooner or later

(52:36):
that oil is going to come intothe beach. Oh yeah, So yeah,
you're not going to get away fromit. I mean, yeah,
you can't see it, but you'regonna you're gonna see the effects still ken
And it's the whole thing. Imean, this whole climate chang thing is
so insane. It's just unbelievable. But I mean there's not one shred of
evidence, and uh, it's it'sit's just it's just it's all just crazy.

(52:59):
And it's it's amaze how people usethis because it's going to benefit a
few people are gonna get very richoff it, but it does so much
damage for the environment, and uh, it's just it's really sad. Really,
I'm with you, John, Thankyou man. I appreciate it,
you bet, yeah, yeah, you can sense the frustration in his voice.

(53:21):
And and I would imagine in thosevoices of anybody else who's really deep
dived into this and studied climate andstudied the the way that that windmills and
solar panels impact the environment. Probablynot anywhere near on the positive side.

(53:44):
The downside to these things long term, and it's going to be there's the
only sane idea I've seen for solarso far, and even it has has
its drawbacks. Is something I sawyesterday from a company I believe the company

(54:04):
is in Germany. Maybe their planand all they have to do is pull
off I think it's sixty two rocketlaunches space launches to pull this off.
Their plan is to put a bunchof giant solar panels in space. They're
gonna take them up there where there'sno atmosphere. With our own atmosphere changes

(54:30):
the amount of energy that can beabsorbed through a solar panel, so you
got atmosphere, you got shade, you got night time, you got all
these things that we're dealing with onthe solar panel side that work against them,
and you certainly this whole notion ofI can fix that problem with the

(54:52):
shade on your roof. Yeah,by cutting down my trees. No,
don't cut down my trees. Andthe bottom line is this thing out and
outer space has it op it couldwork. I think it could help.
It would not heat up our planet, It would not do anything but send
energy. And this is still amazingto me. It's the same. It's

(55:14):
on teeny tiny scale. It's theway you can charge your phone just by
putting it on something that is sendingelectricity through the air into your phone.
I don't understand that at all,but I'm glad it works that way,
And for whoever has phones that dothat, more power to you. But
to do it from space and generateelectricity out there, I think it has

(55:38):
a far better chance of being successfuland not destructive to our own planet.
This whole notion of I don't wantto get into CO two right now,
do I really? Real? Quickly? All this tambourine banging about about reducing
carbon emissions by people who are flyingaround the world telling you not to do

(56:00):
that, telling you that you thatwe have to reduce carbon emissions while they're
flying around in private jets. Bythe way, they're not taking the bus
to go, they're not taking anelectric bus to go to these meetings.
They're flying in private air transportation. And no, that's messed up. It's
just not it's not plausible, it'snot reasonable. There's no there's no long

(56:25):
term scientific evidence that I've been ableto find. And I've looked, I've
looked so hard to find something thatsays, you know what, we better
hurry and reduce these CO two emissionsbecause frankly, if we get them down
much lower than they are right now, I think it's a point oho something
percent of the atmosphere, we takethem down anymore, the plants are going

(56:46):
to start dying. And if plantsstart dying, then we start dying.
Because plants make oxygen. They needCO two to make oxygen. But nobody's
really that's not that's not on thefront page. It's all it is is
just about how all these things thatwe have to do and uh no,
uh allen ways inn if the windmillsare so far offshore trends. Yeah,

(57:09):
this is a very good point.Transmission of the energy produces seriously compromise.
A lot of energy is lost ina long line of transmission to battery storage.
Another good point. So if you'regonna put him so far out there,
that's probably why they have to puthundreds of square miles of these things
out there just to just to chargesome teenager cell phone. It's such a

(57:35):
mess, such a mess. Idon't know if I want to go back
to thievery or not. And Iwill tell you about a place that years
ago at least was bad and oneof the options a guy figured out that
helped him avoid being ripped off anymore. As a guy a knew years ago
had not one but two trucks vandalizedon the on the Bay side of the

(58:00):
stretch of Coastal Highway between Surfside andSan Louis Pass. There were some really
good walking wadefishing back in there yearsago, and I used to go down
there myself, and then all ofa sudden, these people are getting ripped
off, their cars are being brokeninto while they're out wadefishing a half a
mile away, and low and behold, Hey, can y'all grab that?

(58:23):
Yeah? Thank you? And loand behold. You come back from wadefishing,
you got a window broken out,and you got all your stuff in
your car stolen. And it gotso bad even that not only were these
people coming up and busting into carsand stealing everything inside, but there was
a time when you'd come back alsoto two slashed tires. What evil do

(58:49):
you know? What does that? It's all ready you've already stolen things out
of the car. Why would youdo that? And the cure that one
guy, a friend of mine,I had a really nice beach house facing
right on the front row in Gaalves, some beautiful beach house, and he
drove some really nice cars too,And the first time one of them got
broken into, he went out andbought about a fifteen or twenty year old

(59:14):
truck that just looked like hell.It the paint was flaking off, the
there were a dents and things allover it. This was something that was
it was either going to be hisor it was going straight to the junkyard.
And he bought it and he didn'tdo anything to it, and he'd
put his fishing tackle in there. To go wade fishing, and when he
parked, he'd leave it open, just like, okay, hop on in,

(59:37):
hop on, ind sure, knockyourself out, even leave it open.
And nobody ever touched that truck becauseit was pretty obvious there was nothing
in it worse stealing. There wasn'teven so much as a as a tic
tack in the glove box, nothingworse stealing. The whole truck didn't even
have a spare tire. Someone threetwo one two five seven ninety email me

(59:58):
Dug Pike at iHeartMedia dot com. We'll take little break here at the bottom

No. Primo Doors does nothing butdoors. You go in there,

less rainy morning, I think, let me check really quickly. Go to

(01:03:00):
this, go to the weather channeland see what's popping on the radar.
Hopefully nothing still Texas town hit hard. No, I don't want to hear
that. All kinds of weird stuffgoing. I tell you what, I'll
do that later. Let me gotalk to Tony Box. He's sitting there
on the phone and waiting for me. Tony Box, what's up, buddy?
More? Well, we're about tostart teaching a hunter's education course.

(01:03:22):
Yes, sir, where are youout in Richmond, Texas? Well,
that's very vague. Well they it'sa nice little private place. No,
that's cool, that's fine. That'sfine. So what are you going to
teach these kids today? They willgo through the basic hunter safety course that

(01:03:42):
the Texas Parks Awilife Mandates are requiresnow for folks. It was a young
man named Dan Billings who does anexcellent job of teaching us out. We're
doing this to Safari Club International.By the farther you and I go,
the more and more. Everybody, everybody sounds like a young man. You
know. Yeah, well that isany thank goodness because uh you know,

(01:04:08):
and we use the extruction they're pickingus off. Yeah, yeah, that's
a good point. But yeah,we've got about fifty young folks coming out
in Fromossos and we'll get funch foreverybody. That's fantastic. Man. Well,
it's one of those things where wefeel very fortunate that we can do
this. We're going to offer anotherclass in October. I think we're going
to go to a twice a yearvenue on this. Oh good, good

(01:04:29):
good. Yeah. Yeah. Wetry to make it where folks can get
out. So I've got uh Wincollege students call us, but they're in
the middle of finals. Oh holycow. Yeah, that's a good point.
And I told him, I said, look, y'all, y'all get
that done and we'll put on anotherone. And I said, I'll tell
you what, if y'all get twentyfive to thirty of y'all together, we'll
put on one just for y'all.Yeah, that's that's at Yeah, that's
something that can be done even throughthe parting Waldlife Department. If you there

(01:04:54):
are hundred safety instructors all over theplace who are dying to fill up courses
and classes and if you can gathera group, because like you're talking about
doing with these college kids, they'llfind an instructor who'd be more than happy
to take them. And these guysare very good at what they do.
I'm real. I just can't sayenough good about them. But in this

(01:05:15):
case, we pick up through forour club international all the costs on it.
Wow, that's nice. Yeah,we feed them, we pay all
the certifications, we pay the instructors, so there's no cost to anyone that
signs up all these programs. Justshow up. Just show up with a
good attitude to going to out yourpaperwork in advance, which we had them
do it online. Take the trophyhundred ties in their magazine. Uh,

(01:05:40):
Tenches out Doors is going to dothe same thing for us. So we've
got to mention show before, whichis very helpful. You know, we're
this is the thing we try todo for the community. That is fantastic.
Man, that's a fantasticast. Youknow what do y'all do with the
money you raised, Well, thisis one of the things we do.
I can't imagine any thing better todo with some of that money than get

(01:06:00):
these little kids back into it man, and or not back into it,
but into it and with the knowledgethey need to be safe out there too.
That's the big thing of us iswe want safe you know. It's
like I've told them, Yeah,I know you'll want to hunt. No
that we'll get that, but Iwant you to hunt safely. Yeah.
I've been saying for since since I'vebeen in the industry I'm in and that's

(01:06:23):
a very long time that just oncebefore I die, I want to see
a hunting season go all the waythrough in Texas with no hunting accidents.
Wouldn't that be something? Huh?You and I have been around places where
it's happened and it is very soyep uh with you. But anyway,

(01:06:45):
we're about to get on this allright, buddy, thank you for having
me on. We'll talk to Yeah, well, tell those kids I'm rooting
for man to pay attention in class. For heaven's sakes. Thank you so
much. Yeah, thank you,Tony my pleasure buddy Audios' Tony Box,
good dude, good good, solidguy, loves the outdoors, loves getting
these kids involved in it. BeforeI go to break, let me see

(01:07:10):
where I want to go. Allenbrings up a good point. If we
reduce CO two the planet in additionto other things, in addition to the
oxygen issue, planet's gonna start gettingcolder and colder and colder. And that's
really to the point of freezing. And that's not what we want either.
That's not what we want. Carlways in this is interesting to the songbirds

(01:07:33):
that navigate the Gulf of Mexico.I got a quick story about that.
These huge groups of birds migrate backup this way in the spring, and
they gather when they get across theGulf of Mexico on High Island a lot,
and even into Galveston. I wasdown at Moody Gardens. I think
it may have been it might havebeen this past year's fly fishing festival,

(01:07:57):
or it may have been some otherevent. In any event, there were
little birds all up in the bushesall over Moody Gardens, all these beautiful,
colorful little birds that had just foundtheir way. And I used to
think, like a lot of peoplestill do, that those birds flew all
the way across the Gulf of Mexico, and what an amazing journey that was.

(01:08:18):
But I found out about twenty milesoff the coast of eastlan Moo Harris
years ago, when I was takingpictures and out there. I was down
there for a bill fishing trip. But that afternoon, the first afternoon we
were there, we hop on theboat. Or no, it's actually the
second day we were there, hopon the boat. Something else, really

(01:08:39):
weird and different happened on the firstday. I'll tell you about that some
other time. But we hop onthe boat. We're out there fishing,
We're trolling along and into the cockpitcomes this little, tiny yellow warbler.
I mean a bird that fits inthe palm of your hand, because it
fit in the palm of mind.Literally, it hit that deck and just
collapsed. I thought, oh,this poor little thing. It was just

(01:09:01):
on desk's door and here it is. And when it finally stood up,
I reached over and it just pickedit up and put it in my hand.
And to make a long story shortso I don't get late here,
we fed it cantlope and pineapple, and it much preferred the cantilope. And
then I took a little water bottlecap and filled it full of water,
and the bird took a good healthydrink, and it was starting to get

(01:09:25):
itself back together, and I thought, I got to take advantage of this
somehow, and I propped that littlebird up on top of a beautiful gold
Pen International reel and stepped back infour to five foot seas with no auto
focus, no nothing. I hadto do it all manually, and I

(01:09:45):
got one frame shot before that birdflew away, and I thought, oh,
please let it be in focused, and it turned out it was.
It was a fantastic shot. Isold several copies of it. Beautiful,
made a magazine cover all this goodstuff. Anyway, the bird got maybe
ten yards behind the boat and thenjust dumped into the water, and I
thought, oh no, that's that'sgonna be the end of that bird.

(01:10:09):
It'll never fly again. But itjust sat there and I kept watching it
and watching it. We were justvery slowly idling away, and all of
a sudden it just got up andjust as strong and healthy as could be
and took off flying. So Iknow that they can rest on the way
back, just sitting on the topof the water. Now if it's if

(01:10:29):
it's pretty dog on rough when they'reout there, I got a hunter's a
lot of those little baby birds onthe bottom of the Gulf of Mexico sad,
very sad. But the healthy ones, the strong ones with a little
rest make that trip, and thatthe ones that make it back here.
That's what makes them special. AllRight, we got to take a little
break here. All the way out, I will tell you and I will

(01:10:51):
tell you all about American shooting centers. This is this is the place that
opened up very long ago. Iwant to say, maybe even like nineties,
somewhere in there. I'm not surehow long it's been around. I
do know that the latest owner,it was originally owned by the county,
and the latest owner now is aman named Eda Riggy, and in his

(01:11:11):
years at the Helm, he hasturned it into an amazing place to enjoy
the shooting sports. They have threesporting place courses. They have I think
it's ten, maybe twelve trap andskeep fields. They have five stands setups
all over the place. They havea beginner's wing shooting area. It's the
largest non military shooting facility in theentire state. That's kind of a big

(01:11:32):
deal. They have rifle and pistolsstarting at five yards and going out to
six hundred yards, which is funto watch when it's nice and calm and
cool out there, like maybe inOctober or so. Also a pop up
silhouette range, which is a lotof fun for the rim fire folks.
If you think he can shoot, you're twenty two. Take it over there

(01:11:54):
and shoot those little pop up targets. They're a lot of fun, especially
out to two hundred and fifty yards. That's a long way salab a little
twenty two bullet, but it's funwhen you finally hit one. They have
instruction if you're having trouble hitting thosetargets, the flying targets, the stationary
target, whatever, and they alsohave good instruction in home self defense as

(01:12:15):
well. You get a close uplearn how to use that handgun of yours
to take care of your family.West Timor Parkway between Katie and Highway six
very easy to find. Can't missit really. You see the big burns
out there that are backstops when yougo out there. If ads there,
just tell him I said hello andvisit with him and then go enjoy the
shooting sports in a very safe, user friendly environment. American Shooting Centers dot

(01:12:40):
COM's the website American Shooting Centers dotcom. Your rockets and astros live here
we are sports Talk seven ninety. The conversation continues this as the Doug Pike
Show. Sports Talk seven ninety sawa pretty interesting description of some guys at

(01:13:00):
a deer lease that somebody came acrossyears ago and said he just described him
as being really tough, said hewouldn't want to run into him at church
on Sunday, Like, holy cow, Yeah, that's a pretty pretty descriptive
way to look at that. Sevenone three two one two five seven ninety

(01:13:25):
Emami Dougpike at iHeartMedia dot com.Rudy who always finds the oddball stories.
Uh, mentioned one that I haveseen this week, and I actually talked
about it briefly on fifty plus. There is there are snapshots. I haven't
seen video yet, but I've readthe stories and seen a couple of photographs

(01:13:45):
of this orangutan that supposedly used medicineto help cure it's an injury it had
to its face, and the theknee jerk reaction from some people was,
Oh, no, that's not reallywhat's going on. That can't be true

(01:14:08):
this orangutan. No animals self medicatelike that, They don't know how to
do anything like that to which somebodywhen I mentioned that on fifty plus pretty
quickly responded, Hey, wait aminute. Dogs eat grass when their stomachs
are upset, now, don't they? And it helps them settle their stomachs.

(01:14:30):
These animals, I'm not saying anyone of them is going to be
an MD next week, but thereare animals that have and I think this
orangutan might be one of them. It's it's kind of tough to go against
it. If I saw the video, it would be a lot more compelling.
But what they're saying this this animaldid it somehow scratched its face kind

(01:14:51):
of on its cheekbone, and there'sthere's a picture that shows the animal with
the wound, And what it issaid to have done is use some leaves
that actually have some sort of likea pain medication in them, something that
relieves a pain reliever in the makeupof those leaves, and this orangutan is

(01:15:15):
said to have chewed up a bunchof that stuff to almost make a paste
out of it, and then appliedit to that wound, and then put
a few more leaves over it,and lo and behold a week later,
week and a half or whatever itis. According to the story, the
wounds healed up and there's no signof infection, and surely that's what that

(01:15:38):
animal did. Why not believe that? I think that it would be possible
in the mind of an animal likethat, pretty smart animal, that,
if it had ever chewed back throughoutthe species history, chewed some of those
leaves and realized it kind of madetheir tongue numb or something like that,

(01:15:58):
and maybe over a few generations andgenerations more, there was a connection made
between pain relief and chewing those leaves. Why wouldn't you try to stick some
on an open wound to see ifit helped. I don't. I don't
have a problem. I don't havea problem reaching that far. I think.

(01:16:20):
I think that's very plausible. Ireally do. Seven one three two

Of course, this would be myluck he's not mentioned or not listening
today seven one three two one twofive seven ninety. Email me Doug Pike
at iHeartMedia dot com. If youthink I'm crazy about this Orangutan, tell
me why. I'd be curious toknow. When we come back from this
break at the top of the hourin a couple of minutes, I'm gonna
I'm trying to get Chris Dornan onthe phone. Chris is the media guy

(01:17:04):
for the Inspirity which is ongoing upin the Woodlands. They are playing Round
one, which much to this dismayof all the players. I'm sure sure
they'd rather be neck deep in alittle farther at least into the tournament.
But the bottom line is it's they'rehoping to get in everything between today and

(01:17:27):
tomorrow. Tomorrow is not looking great. I'm not sure how they'll deal with
this. If it's just another codefloater of rain tomorrow, we'll see.
I've got golf to play on Monday. I hope everything. No, I
don't want to wish any rain onanybody, so I won't say where.

(01:17:48):
I hope it doesn't rain, becausethen that means I'm moving it to somebody
else, and if it's my turnin the well, it's just my turn
in the well, and we canraise money for a good cause on another
day. All this weather that we'vehad lately, the rain has kind of
overshadowed something I was gonna have beenwanting to talk about all week, and

(01:18:10):
that is how the really strong onshorewinds have helped fishing around here. And
I'll get into that after I takea little look at the inspirity and maybe
at the PGA tour at the topof this hour. But the bottom line
is that this big bull tide thatwe had for several days when we were

(01:18:30):
down there at Moody Gardens, thewater was up probably I would guess a
foot foot and a half above normal, and when high tide came in,
it was right to the tops ofa lot of bulkheads. I saw there
was water on the golf course inplaces where it shouldn't be. That was
tidal surge, even all the wayup to Moody Garden's golf course, which

(01:18:55):
that's a long ways. That water'sgot to be pushed to get up high
enough to get where it got onthat golf course. It was very interesting
to see it all. And Iwas glad too, because the tides have
been just ridiculously low for quite sometime. And that was. Every time
something happens for longer than you wantit to a lot of people start to
get nervous and wonder if it's thebeginning of the end. But no tides

(01:19:16):
go out, tides come back, and this time the tide's coming back strongly,
and the result up and down thecoast when the tide pushes back up
into the backwaters that much, thenas it starts to recede, all the
little bitty things that have been growingin there since early spring, the shrimp,
the little baitfish, all of thatkind of gets flushed out. And

(01:19:40):
the big fish know that, andthey positioned themselves to gobble, gobble,
and that's what they've been doing, and fishermen who know what they're doing are
taking full advantage. We'll talk aboutthat more in than nine. All right,
I gotta take this break right now. On the way out, I
will tell you about Timber Creek GolfClub on FM twenty three to fifty one
down there and friends, with twentyseven holes about four or five miles east,

(01:20:02):
no west, excuse me, west, of the golf freeway, excellent
food, excellent staff. They havethe JJ Woods Golf Performance Center up and
running. Once JJ gives me thegreen light that everything is put away,
all the boxes are unpacked, andthey are at full speed, I'm gonna

(01:20:23):
have him on so that you andanybody you know who needs golf lessons can
get in there and take advantage ofwhat he brings to. Timber Creek Golf
Club twenty seven holes. Go goplay eighteen of them today, and if
you don't like what you see,go knock on the door over there at
that new performance center and at leastget in line, or maybe you sneak
in there and see if there's anopen bay where you get a little help

(01:20:45):
with your game. Timber Creek GolfClub FM twenty three point fifty one a
great place for a big tournament, great place for you and a body to
just jump on when you can, because with twenty seven holes, they're getting
out twice as many people as asmost of the other courses. Timber Creek
Golf Club dot com. I playedit a bunch of times. I love
it. Timber Creek goolf Club dotcom. Well, I want to very

(01:21:06):
quickly get into first the inspirity, the inspirity imitation along going up there in
the woodlands and they're out and playingthe people who I see. Yeah,
the farthest doubt anybody is at presentis eight holes playing nine and Ye Yang

(01:21:29):
is five under par through eight holes. Padrick Harrington three under through eight holes,
Charlie Wee at three, Darren Clarkat three. During Clark's three under
through five holes. There's some birdiesto be made out there for sure today
and I think part of that maybe penplacements in an effort to get as

(01:21:49):
many holes in as possible. Theydon't want it, they don't want anything
to slow these guys down. They'retrying to get in enough to make it
an official event, and I thinkthat maybe thirty six hole, which means
they're going to have to play alot of golf today and even tomorrow with
the lingering threat of rain very quickly. The CJ Cup up the road in

(01:22:12):
McKinney at TPC Craig Ranch being ledcurrently by Jake Knapp. He's at fourteen
under par through his first two rounds. Troy Merritt at thirteen, along with
Matt Wallace, Kelly Craft at twelve. I got to hang out with him
a little bit years and years agoup at one of the Spirit tournaments up
at Whispering Pines, Davis Riley ateleven, Taylor Pendrith at eleven, Keith

(01:22:38):
Mitchell, Ben Coles, and letme see if there's anybody else, and
then we'll move on. Now he'sthe last one, all at eleven under
par, just a sleeve off thelead, and certainly with so much golf
left to play up there, Nick, it's anybody's tournament. Got to run
through these phone calls here. Let'sstart with Brandon. Then I'll get to
Adrian and Tim as quickly as possible. Brandon, want somebody happy Saturday morning

(01:23:01):

these series, win two out ofthree, they're gonna be okay. Yeah,
okay, Hey, I got threecalls. I gotta catch. What
else can I tell you? Talkto you about? And I'm gonna go

(01:31:20):
what part of ten? Yeah, let me let me get your number and
if somebody maybe wants to, I'lltell you what. They've got your number
in there. They've they've captured yournumber, so well we'll see what we
can do. But yeah, wejust can't do that. Okay, all
right, thank you man? Yeah, sorry, Wow, that was that
was quick. Yeah, this isnot a swap meet. Okay, it's

(01:31:40):
not a swap meat. I'm gladyou got a boat for sale, but
there's other places you can do that. I am gonna let's see here,
let me catch this call, andthen we're gonna go to break and then
after that, I'm gonna let Melbournecall my buddy Chris Dorning from up at
the Inspirity and just see exactly wherethey are and where they hope to get
that one? Ready? Can youput them? Let's see if we got

(01:32:03):
them. I'm gonna count to three. I bet they're ready yeah, there
we go. Hey Steve, what'sup, buddy, Well, good morning.
How are you doing today? I'mgood, thank you? Oh good
good. I was calling in aboutthis animal issue. Sure, I've read
several articles where it sus that dogsare actually being able to diagnose cancer.

(01:32:23):
Yeah, you know what. That'sI saw a story about that just this
week. There are Yeah, thesethese dogs are sniffing out stuff and and
and as accurate or even more soin some cases than some of the medical
tests that we do. Yeah, and those medical tests cost a lot more
than the dog. You know, they can. That nose on a dog

(01:32:44):
is a pretty dog on valuable thingwhen you stop and think of all the
applications that they're used for, fordrugs, for explosives, now for detecting
disease, and they are proving notonly do they have to be able to
detect it, but they have tobe to detect that from all the other
just one little tiny smell and changefrom all the other smells that they have

(01:33:06):
running through their heads every time theytake a breath. It's pretty fascinating really
when you think about it, howsmart they have to be to do that.
And I get the rewards, probablythe same. They probably get a
tennis ball for finding a case ofcancer when a doctor gets fifty thousand dollars
for it, you know, ormore more started throwing tennis balls at the

(01:33:30):
doctor. See how long they stayon the job. So yeah, but
the animals, I think that menhuman beings tend to be very ego centric,
as if they are the smartest onesof all. Yeah, that's true,
and over they overlook they overlook animalintelligence. You like dogs. Dogs
can pick up on the character andpersonality of people. Yeah, that's fair.

(01:33:54):
Dog. If the dog has issueswith someone or distrust them, there's
usually good reason for it. Yeah, that's a pretty good point to bring
up. Yeah, your dog doesn'ttrust the neighbor, something like that.
You might want to keep your eyesopen. Oh look, you got your
dog working for you. Now,dog's mad at me. Come on,

(01:34:15):
okay, all right, man,I'm gonna get going here. I got
to catch up at a little breakand yeah, thank you, that's perfect,
man, tell that all right, let's see why she's staying hello.
Oh okay, audios, Holy cow, that Yorky's going off? Man,
what did I do? Oh well, all right, let's take a break

(01:34:38):
here. When as soon as weget in the break, I'm gonna have
I'm gonna have Melvin reach out toChris Dorning up there at the Inspirity and
we'll see just what's going on andhow much tournament they're hoping to get in.
On the way out, I'll tellyou about bronze roofing again, a
reminder, all this hell we've hadlately, all the wind, all the
stuff that's been blowing around, ifyou find limbs in your yard, there's

(01:34:59):
a good chance one of those limbsmay have bounced off your roof once or
twice before it got there, andthat could have done some damage. And
that's the last thing you want isa damaged roof coming up into hurricane season.
Bronze Roofing can help you with that. They'll come to your house,
usually within a day, and chargeyou not a dime to do a full
inspection of your roof so that youknow that you're protected when the ugly stuff

(01:35:24):
finally gets around here come summertime. If they do find something, they'll come
down, I'll show you pictures ofthe damage and they will explain to you
what they would do to fix it, what materials they would use, how
long it'll take and how much it'llcost. Can tell you that right there
on the spot. Here's what wecan do for you. Unless it's an

(01:35:44):
entire roof, that's a different story. But if it's a repair, they
can tell you that. And usuallythey can get started pretty quickly too,
maybe in a day or so.Come back and take care of that roof
so you don't have to worry aboutit anymore. If you get real lucky,
they'll just tell you your roof's fineand they'll come back in a year
or two. Free inspections, usuallywithin twenty four hours. All you got
to do is get in touch withthem. Bronzroofing dot com. They've worked

(01:36:09):
on my house. They worked onmy mother's house when she was allowed,
did a whole roof up there. My in law's house, my mother in
law up in the woodlands. Shemay have to get another inspection after all
this weather settles out too. Imight remind her of that. Bronze Roofing

certainly do appreciate it. I wantto get Chris on the phone here,
click Chris Dornin. How's it goingup there? Man? Well, we
have we have a t in theground in the ball in the air,
so we're winning this morning. I'lltell you that. Who makes the Yeah,

(01:36:57):
who makes rubber golf shoes? That'swhat I want to know. What
kind of a beating did the coursetake the last two days? You know?
I mean I'm always amazed at thedrainage golf courses in the grounds here
in Texas. But yeah, Imean, twelve into the rain in thirty

(01:37:19):
thirty six hours is kind of unprecedented. But you know, our grounds crew
had led by Chris Hartman, He'she's world class. And the operations crew
they they've been working around the clockovernight and they got it ready to play
today. So yeah, we hada close obviously on on on Thursday and

(01:37:42):
Friday. Yeah, and then wegot the players back out this morning.
We got them going at seven amthis morning. They'll do they'll do round
one and then we'll just keep rotatingthem. They're off split teas. We'll
keep them in the same groups andwe'll get we'll try and get round two
going at twelve forty five. Andthen just to you know, to sort
of complicate the puzzle, we we'veobviously had the greats and golf lined up

(01:38:05):
for we're going to insert them, insert them for nine holes in between the
two rounds at eleven fifty. Soso hopefully mother mother Nature cooperates today.
We we've got to get thirty sixholes in at minimum an official event,
right, and that's what that's whatwe're trying to accomplish today in the event

(01:38:27):
that there you know that there couldbe more bad weather tomorrow. Stephen Alker,
it makes I don't know, Ithink he can do it three in
a row. Well, it's definitelya second shot golf courses. Yeah,
you know, and you know youplayed it a few times, and you
know, even Bernhard Longer was wasin the media room earlier this week and
just talking that there's there's not abetter iron player in the world right now

(01:38:51):
than Steven Elker. So yeah,I mean, it's he admitted to having
a little bit of pressure and alittle bit of nerves coming in this week.
Look for a three people, butman, he wasted no time getting
out of the gate. And soyeah, it's uh, you know,
you look at you look at theearly leaderboard right now, it's definitely you
know, longer hitters and and secondshot hitters that are that are sort of

(01:39:13):
climbing to the top and they'll bethrowing darts all day. The ball is
not gonna be moving moving much becauseit is pretty wet. Yeah, and
that's tough on these guys because nobodywanted that. I'll tell you, I'll
go back to your your crew thatput the course in shape any you and
I could have done it if thesun had been shining all week, right,
but under these circumstances, for themto make that course playable took what

(01:39:36):
one hundred people, I don't knowhow many. Yeah, I mean,
it was all hands on deck.It didn't matter what your role was,
like, you know, whether they'rerunning things around or or helps, you
know, help move some water orpump water out. It Literally as soon
as it stopped raining yesterday, itdidn't matter your role. We all stopped

(01:39:56):
what we had to do and justfollowed directions and and you know, it's
it's quite remarkable. They really focusedinside the ropes obviously. Yeah, you
know, our maintenance, our operationslead told me this morning that you know,
inside the ropes it's it's it's prettypretty good. And then when you
know, obviously outside of the roughand stuff, it's it's a little it's
quite wet. But you know, they're all on carts today there will be

(01:40:19):
on cart path only and hopefully that'llkeep the speed of play going so that
we get thirty six in. Soyou mentioned that it's good inside the ropes,
outside the ropes where the spectators are, how should they prepare if they
want to come up and watch thegolf today? I mean, is it's

(01:40:40):
not that bad? I mean,it's you know, I mean, it's
it's it's just it's wet, andyou know, obviously with more of traction
in the rough that creates mud.But you know, the great thing here
is the is the cart paths rightright through. So I mean you can
very easily follow these groups and bewalking on the concrete cart paths throughout.

(01:41:00):
So but but you know, beprepared. If you're sitting in the graft
or you don't have that there, you better bring some kind of a little
something to sit on, a littledamper than usual, but now we encourage
everyone to come out. I meanit's uh free admission to every world class
player that you can ever imagine isis here today, including you know,

(01:41:24):
Jack Nicholas, Gary Player, LeeTrevino, auticusor Ands and Matthews, Biscus
goes on and on, Tom Watson. Tom Watson is news the greats of
golf this year. So, Imean, where else in the world are
you going to see the best ofany sport for free? And you know
you're gonna get right up front andclose with them, and it's we're gonna
make it a great day. Leaveyour cross and your flip flops at home.

(01:41:47):
That might be the best. Thatmight be the best advice. We're
sensible shoes. Oh my goodness.Yeah, if you see it, if
you happen to see anybody out there, just really dressed, over dressed for
the conditions, get a picture andshoot it to me, will you.
Yeah, well we all have tosue. But yeah, all right,
I'm just going to go till darktoday. Huh. We are, Yeah,

(01:42:11):
we'll play. You know, we'refiguring we should be you know,
four and a half hours. Getthose second groups off the last the last
two times of Round two should beprobably around two thirty two forty yeah,
forty five somewhere on there. Soyou know, we really hope we should
be able to get them in kindof just you know, seven, seven
thirty, just before dark. SoI certainly hope that the gallery, the

(01:42:33):
gallery is reflective of that, allthe talent that's up there, and again
the just the legends who are there. You know that the list you read
off just a minute ago. Theonly one of them I haven't interviewed yet
is Watson, So maybe I'll tryto figure out yeah, out, Yeah,
that's a good bunch. I'd liketo come up and see him.
He's been great. I mean, you know, he was obviously here earlier

(01:42:55):
this week at the Player dinner andjust just adding a whole new voice and
just the history and the stories thatthese guys tell and and and they tell.
You know, they really engage. As I've watched them through the years
at this exhibition, is they reallyengage with the crowd. You know,
they're playing golf, but but they'rebut they're also entertaining, and it's it's

(01:43:16):
kind of NonStop laughter watching all ofthese groups as they they kind of stroll
through the nine holes of the backnine at the Woodlands Country Cup tournament course.
You know, it's interesting to watchthem do that too, because they
have nothing left to prove to anybodythey have. They totally drop their guard.
They don't care, and they'll sayanything or do anything to get a

(01:43:39):
laugh. You're exactly right, andit's it's truly entertaining to see golfers that
relaxed and that comfortable in their skin. They're always usually so tight and so
wound up, especially the PGA Tourplayers and the l g A LP PGA
Tour players as well. But yourbunch is, they're free wheeling and a
lot of fun, man, theysure are, and even even even the

(01:44:01):
championships that's going on with PJ Tourchampions player there, it is a lot
lighter than, you know, thanthan a regular tour event where they are
very engaging with the crowd and they'restill competitive, they still want to win,
but but it is a lighter feel, for sure. There's more opportunity
to engage and they understand there onthe back nine of their careers, they

(01:44:25):
understand the importance of community and givingback to community and making sure they're available
for people. So yeah, it'sI think it's it's just one of the
best sporting events you can attend. It is a Champions Tour event, and
then you add in the legends intoit all, and it's it's just the
very thing on top of the cake. There's a lot going on up there
today, and of course no moreavailable than on cart path only car pass.

(01:44:51):
Everyone will be on cart path onlytoday. I'm so glad you're going
to get this in. It lookslike you're going to get the minimum at
least in and maybe, who knows, maybe we'll get some more golf tomorrow.
Stay in touch, let me knowwhat's going on. Okay, Chris,
thank you for your time this morning. I know you're busy, man.
Appreciate it by some thanks, justappreciate it, my pleasure. Audios.

(01:45:12):
All right, let me let himgo. I know he's got work
to do. Good heavens, whata mess that is up there. I'm
sure they, Like I mentioned, when you go to a golf tournament,
a professional golf tournament like this, there's been work being done for months to
prepare the golf course for these peopleto come in and play. These men
and women whoever it is, whetheryou had the Chevron a couple of weeks

(01:45:35):
ago. Now we've got the inspirity, and it truly is an undertaking unlike
anything you've seen before. They've gotto get all the hospitality stuff up,
but the golf course course itself iswhat the players have to deal with.
And the better they can condition thatcourse, the more entertaining it's gonna be

(01:45:59):
to watch these players navigate it.And when you throw in like he said,
what was it, twelve inches ofrain in thirty six hours, something
like that, something Harvey esque almost. It would have seemed impossible if you'd
have told me that they were goingto get that much rain in less than
two days and still be playing today. But like he said yesterday, as

(01:46:25):
soon as it quit raining, allhands on deck, everybody out, grab
a rate, grab a shovel,grab a bucket, whatever you've got to
grab, and get that water offthis golf course. And this is great
testimony to the way golf courses arebuilt now and how they drain. It's
great testament to the ability and theplanning you have to plan for everything,

(01:46:51):
the contingency plan for catastrophic rainfall, and that's somewhere in the book on how
to take care of a golf coursebefore and during a professional tournament. There's
that page. Nobody wants to haveto go to that page, but man,
they did, and they made itwork. It's impressive, It really

(01:47:12):
is. When you stop and thinkabout what they had to do, and
when you stop and think about howmaybe the local place where you, wherever
you play most of your golf, they'd gotten twelve inches of rain. They
might still be closed, a coupleof holes might be underwater. Who knows.
That's a lot of rain, andmore power to them. They've got
those folks out and they've got thoselegends of golf going out. I believe

(01:47:34):
Chris said at eleven thirty that wouldbe fun to watch. They're gonna do
a little scramble format. From whatthe release of thought that I saw this
morning, those those folks are gonnaplay in a scramble format. And just
quickly before I go to break,I'm looking at these teams Team Majors.
That's gonna be Anica Sorenstam, JackNicholas, Gary Player, Lee Trevino,

(01:47:57):
and Tom Watson, Team Hall ofFame, Pat Bradley, David Graham,
Tony Jacqueline, Tom Kite Team Legends, Nancy Lopez, Dave Stockton, Larry
Nelson, Hale Irwin, and thenTeam Greats. That's Julie Inkster, Bill
Ben Crenshaws. Accuse me, BillRogers and Andy North. That's some that's
some serious firepower back in their days. And it's and just like he said,

(01:48:24):
they're gonna be having fun, they'regonna be laughing. They just want
to make sure everybody has a goodtime. And and all of those people
one, two, three, four, five of whom at least real quickly
I've interviewed and and and had thepleasure to have shaken hands with. Yeah,
they're just super people representing this game. It's amazing how they even get

(01:48:47):
that going, and I'm glad theydid. All Right, we're gonna take
a little break here on the wayout. I'll tell you one more time
about Carter's Country, where their theirMother's Day thought. In addition to maybe
getting mom and new handgun to protectyourself, maybe getting mom a new deer
rifle, Maybe getting mom a newshotgun for waterfowl hunting this season, Maybe

(01:49:09):
get mom a concealed carry course tomake sure that mom is up to speed
on the legality of carrying on,the wins and whares and what to do
and what not to do with yourgun if you're carrying it out in public,
a lot of things that play intothis. You still have the right
in Texas to use your weapon todefend yourself, your property, your family,

(01:49:33):
other people if some crazy person showsup and starts hurting people, but
there are laws. There are lawsaround that, and the last place you
want to end up is on thewrong end of the law. When you
felt like you just had to useyour weapon, you got to make sure
you know how all that works. And Carter's Country and a course in concealed

(01:49:55):
carry will help you do that. You're gonna spend about four hours in a
classroom learning and learning and learning moreabout what you can do with your guns,
and then you're going to go outsidefor a proficiency test, which is
relatively simple. Basically, you haveto hit a piece of poster board at
twenty yards. That's the level ofexpertise you need. Now you need to

(01:50:17):
be very comfortable with your gun.You need to be very confident with your
gun. But you don't have tobe an expert marchman. You just have
to be able to stop that threat. If that Heaven forbid, if that
scenario ever unfolds in front of you. Carterscut dot Com is the website.
You can register there, or youcan go to one of the stores and

(01:51:24):
Nothing no rain here. I don'tknow if we're gonna have sunshine,
but at least according to this, there are no blobs showing up any closer
than pretty much like some little bittygreen light green ones around Magnolia, maybe
Brenham, maybe a little bit northwestof Katie and then maybe a little tiny

(01:51:47):
bit. What time is this thingpopping up that's so no, that's all.
That's all already done. Let mesee if there's anything past ten o'clock
I'm watching. I'm watching eleven twelve, one to three nothing. So if
they're right, we're good probably forthe rest of the afternoon, which means

(01:52:11):
the inspirity is gonna plod forward andI'll bet get in it's thirty seven hole
or thirty six holes, uh minimumfor completion of the tournament. I'm hoping
that's gonna work out for him,and I'm hoping the rain stays off of
the north side of town tomorrow.I'd be willing to take one for the
team if we could move the raindown my way and just deal with it

(01:52:34):
so that they could get that thattournament fully completed and maybe get a third
round in even tomorrow. Wouldn't thatbe nice? Seven one three two one
two five seven ninety Email me Dougpikeat iHeartMedia dot com. Talked about that,
talked about that, there was somethingI wanted to talk about, and
what was it? I wanna go. I'm gonna go back to fishing for

(01:52:58):
a minute. All now that We'vegot this new trout limit in sta or
in play, and I'm still gettingall kinds of feedback from people who are
just so upset over this, justso oh, I can't believe they did
that to me. And that's thepoint that Captain Scott made about a month

(01:53:23):
ago almost I think now, maybeat least two weeks ago, maybe three,
that the people who are against thethree trout limit, the people who
are against not allowing retention of bigfish without a tag or without some kind
of a little something off your license, most of those people are They tend
to express themselves fairly selfishly, asif this is all about them and how

(01:53:47):
it's going to affect them, asopposed to how it's going to affect the
resource and the future of that resource. And if they come to me with
that and talk about how I thisand me that, and they're going to
lose me pretty quickly, I wantto if they want to make any kind
of of take any kind of stancein opposition to a three trout limit,

(01:54:14):
that's the kind of people, almostreally that that need to be paying attention
to the limits the most, becausethere's this sense of and and it's pervasive
I think now especially amongst fairly youngpeople, and some of it now there's
some crusty old people though, whohave said the same thing, So I'm
not going to pin it on youngpeople mostly, But there's this, there's

(01:54:34):
this contention that why do I haveto bother keeping? Why can't I keep
more than three fishing? And oneof the classics that comes up is,
well, hey, I only getto fish three times a year, so
why why can't I catch as manyat three a day? Why can't I
catch a whole week's worth when Igo three for seven days, that'd be

(01:54:57):
twenty one fish? Why can't Ihave twenty one because I can only go
fishing once this week or this monthor whatever. Well, if that's your
problem, then you need to changeyour priorities, quit your job. You
can fish every day, you cankeep three every day, but until then
you can't. You don't like thesize limit, well, then drive to

(01:55:20):
Austin, knock on the door atthe Parks and Wildlife Department and ask them
to hear you out. Send theman email if you don't feel like driving
to Austin. Gas is pretty expensivethese days. I won't try to make
you do that, but the emailsurely isn't gonna cost you anything. But
have a stake in it at leastsay your peace, but say it from

(01:55:40):
a position of confidence that you've donethe research that can back up what you
say. To just say I don'tthink the limits are fair, and not
have anything to back it up withexcept your personal results in the limited area
of the coast that you fish,You're really not gonna make much of a

(01:56:01):
case for yourself. I understand thatpeople are upset about this. I do,
and there's always there will always besomeone who wants something other than what
the people in charge of that resourcehave come up with. I'm going to
always be people who want fifteen doesinstead of twelve, or twenty instead of

(01:56:23):
fifteen. Always going to be peoplewho want to shoot more ducks or geese
or quail or anything else. Alwaysgoing to be people who want to catch
more flounder, or catch them allyear round. Now that we've got this
little their little hiatus set up togive them a chance to get out to
the spawning grounds without getting snapped up. Everybody wants something, But unless you've

(01:56:49):
got credentials, unless you've educated yourselfat least to an equal footing with the
people who are charged with make thesedecisions, then we really do have to
trust these people. We really dohave to trust them to serve the interest

(01:57:11):
of that resource, which goes farbeyond your freezer or your stringer. That
resource belongs to everybody in Texas, not just you, not just me,
not just anybody else. And I'vecome to trust most of what the Parks

(01:57:32):
and Wildlife Department does long term. There have been decisions they've made that I
didn't like when they made them. There's no question about it, this or
that whatever. Over the past thirtysomething years that I've been really involved in.
This sometimes doesn't make a lot ofsense at all. But in the
end, what we still have aroundhere is quality fishing, quality hunting,

(01:58:00):
and a big old state to enjoyit in. Could we use more public
hunting ground, absolutely, but theproblem is that they're not making any more
land. And most of Texas isprivately owned and has been for hundreds of
years or a couple of hundred yearsanyway, So you can't force private landowners.

(01:58:26):
They're legal exceptions, okay, Iunderstand, but by and large,
you can't just force somebody to giveyou their land and turn it into a
park that you then turn into apublic hunting ground. That doesn't work.
That way. A lot of verygenerous people in Texas have given their land
to the Parks and Wildlife Department tothen turn it into a state park or

(01:58:46):
some sort of recreation area, andwe're lucky we have those people. But
you can't just arbitrarily take stuff frompeople, and that makes it hard to
offer more public opportunity. We haveas public opportunity. I've talked to a
lot of people in a lot ofstates over the years about this, and
they still admire what we have now. Colorado, Wyoming vast acreage, public

(01:59:14):
acreage, but most of that stuffis pretty rough and very undeveloped Texas because
it's so flat and because we rancattle through it for so many years,
just straight up and down the statewith no fences. Yeah, it's been
developed, it's been a lot ofthat wild has been taken out of it.

(01:59:34):
But it's still still my favorite statein the whole country. It really
is. Florida is pretty close withthe fishing it has that we don't have
California. I wouldn't give you aplug nickel for Louisiana. I'm half Cajun.
I respect and appreciate what they haveover there, for sure, but

(01:59:55):
would I leave Texas as an outdoorsman. If I had for work, maybe
so would I leave it as anoutdoorsman. No, No, we have
everything. If I want snook,I don't have to drive. I don't
have to fly to Florida. Icould, and that probably would have a
chance at maybe a bigger snook. But for numbers, all I got to

(02:00:20):
do is go to South Texas.I can catch about as many snook as
i'd catch on an average day inFlorida. The only offshore fishing bill fishing.
That's a long drive off the Galvestoncoast. If I was going to
be an all full time bill fisherman, I'd moved to South Texas and I
still wouldn't have to drive very far, just a little bit farther than off

(02:00:42):
any coast. We have it allhere, and the reason we have it
all and still have it despite incrediblepopulation growth around the coast, incredible population
growth around every reservoir in lake isbecause those fisheries are well managed. When
we have a tremendous deer population millionsof deer in Texas is because of proper

(02:01:05):
management, and management keeps those herdsand those schools of fish healthy and keeps
them within the carrying capacity of theland or the water. And that's why
if I wanted to, I couldprobably go catch fish an hour after I
leave this show, and that well, no, because I've already got fishing

(02:01:27):
gear in the car. I couldgo straight to a lot of places and
catch a lot of different kinds offish within an hour of where I'm sitting
right here at the galleria. Someonethree two seven ninety email me Dougpike at
iHeartMedia dot com. We'll take alittle break here. I'll climb down from
this soap box and kind of openit up to anything that's on your mind.
I'll check my emails when I getback from running down the hall real

(02:01:49):
quick, and we'll come back towrap it up. The Doug Pike Show
on Sports Talk seven ninety. Thisis Sports Talk seven ninety Online at sports
seven ninety dot com. Now moreDoug Bike forty nine on Sports Talk seven
ninety The Doug Pike Show. Thanksfor listening. Let's let's go take a

(02:02:12):
phone call here and then I'll getto some other stuff. Faux pro Forest,
what's this up, grand Master Pike? How are you? Man?
You're dry at least man I'm I'mhigh and drive where I'm at here in
the boom in metropolis of on Alaska. But I can't say that for everybody
around me. That's underwater man halfwayunderwater. Oh my god. So yeah,

(02:02:34):
it's been a pretty real You actuallymaybe inspired me to change my YouTube
page of faux Pro Outdoors. It'skind of catchy, it's kind of you
know, I like that. Oh, I might have to change it.
But uh, now, yeah,we're up here. I'm just now getting
getting out on the road. Igotta go, uh, gotta make a
rudd of New Waverley. It's someof the best Tomali's in Texas in my

(02:02:57):
opinion. Little low heel Primo foodtruck. There a new wave. They
got some killer killer got even witha knife and fork. So oh my
yeah. Well, if you,if you ever get down to Belleville Meat
Market, grab a few of thoseand take them home and see what you
got. I'll definitely try that. But yeah, we're like they were this
morning night check. We're at onehundred and twenty two thousand cubic feet per

(02:03:18):
second rushing out of the dams. That's a lot of water moving, buddy.
Yeah, that's probably friend of minetook a picture this morning there at
fifty nine in the Trinity River bridge, and if you had a seven foot
rod, you can probably stand onthe bridge and touch the water. Oh
my word. Yeah, that's that'sas high as it's. They can't go
a whole lot higher without causing problemsdown river. Oh, it's actually about

(02:03:40):
on the rights that cat fishing ifyou can get if you can get some
cut shed in the water anywhere onthis lake. Right now, they are
my my neighbor's just going on thebig one nighty bridge every morning catching you
know, forty and fifty a morning. Holy god, I don't doubt it.
I don't doubt it. So Igot some places up river that you
could go up there, and yougot to fish with one rod? You

(02:04:02):
can't. I used to put outthree, but you can't. You can't
fish with three. Now you gotto fish. If you're gonna fish with
three, you got to anchor downon the other two. Yeah, how
did you have them? The rodholders? And we always use braid and
tirtle hooks and then catch them tails. All you is, whenever you get
to the rod, reel them in. But I know when I did this

(02:04:25):
last year when I got rough. You're catching a lot of the one to
three pound class. Yeah, yeah, but you'll every day you'll hit one
at least in that twenty pound class. And you'll know when that rod about
breaks out of the rod holder. You know when that fish can piss speaking
up. I throw them back realquick. Speaking of if you've seen on
Facebook the video of these guys, they're off shore and somebody's got looks like

(02:04:46):
about a fifty pound outfit in arod holder and got the drag tightened down
a bunch, and it's on ait's on a rod holder on the port
side, about maybe three feet upfrom the stern, and something hits that
rod and bends it over, reachingout sideways, not straight back, and

(02:05:08):
just totally rips the top of thegun off. And I took the whole
Yeah, the whole thing, justripped it off. Gotta be like,
that's got it. That's got tobe shocking and scary at the same drive.
Yeah, holy cow, something Imean just ripped it, ripped the
top of the boat off. Itwas funny. Many we might we got

(02:05:28):
a little bit more rain come today, so tomorrow and get the catfish rods
and get the old skeetered up theriver up there and put the power poles
down and see if I can't catcha mess of cat beash. Nothing else
is biting up there. Everything elseis they've canceled. We had two tournaments
this weekend. Yeah, they weren'tcanceled because of high water. But you
drive over the big bridge, there'ssuch a massive debris field. I'm sure,

(02:05:49):
I'm sure. Yeah, peers,peers, docks, trees, it's
it's pretty. It's pretty. Iwouldn't be out of the lay on the
big lake right now. That's pretty. There's no way. It's just kind
of like we get the same thingin the bays after a big hurricane.
There's so much stuff floating out there. You just don't want to be out
there. But anyone I want catchsome catfish. Load up and go get

(02:06:09):
on the bank somewhere because of thebuff of access. Just all right here
catfish, faux pro catfish. Let'sgo, man, stay faux pro cat
there's another one. See. Yeah, well, thank of some more for
us. Thanks for the call, buddy, all right, buddy, always
a pleasure, man, Audio,Stay safe up there. Yeah, more
rain coming, that's I think it'sit's gonna be a problem real quickly.

(02:06:32):
Adam and Melvin, did I tellyou you gotta well know you guys were
around when I jinxed my show upthere on Sunday back at Moody Gardens.
Weren't you? You? You guysexperienced it with me. I forgot about
that and the audit. For thoseof you listening now, when I did
my live broadcast on Saturday, Cowwas there and everything went fine. On

(02:06:53):
Sunday, at about nine forty five, rounding third and headed home, I
made the mistake of bragging how proudI was that I had been able to
do this all by myself from downat Moody Gardens. I started the equipment,
I got hooked up with these guysup here in Houston, and within
what thirty seconds after I said that, I hear in my headphones, I

(02:07:16):
hear, and then the whole unitthat I had so carefully made work perfectly
fell apart on me and died.It just quit. I could not figure
out why. I had no ideawhat caused it, nothing, and I
couldn't make it come back on.And that's why, if you were listening

(02:07:39):
last week, what you heard wasme doing the last six or eight minutes
of the show on my phone? Is that's all I had? You were
a caller on the Adam and MelvinShow. Yeah I was, wasn't I?
Yeah, caller number two. You'reon the air. Got a bad
connection, I alwishly I had probablyhad a pretty good phone connection. How

(02:08:01):
I had no way to get thebroadcast restarted and could not figure it out.
And after the show, I unpluggedeverything again and plugged it all back
in very methodically, very carefully, pushed a button. Everything came back on.
There was nothing wrong with the unitwhatsoever. And I believe it was
Cal and I who maybe sorted itout. No, it's Chris Gordy.

(02:08:22):
Chris Gordy stopped by my desk andwe were talking about it, and he
said, sometimes the connection of thepower chord can get a little squirrely,
and if it's off just the leasta little bit, it will quit on
you, and that leads the unitto work off a battery. And what

(02:08:43):
happened, he believes, and Ibelieve now in hindsight, is that that
chord connection had been jiggled somehow, just enough to make that thing run off
its battery. And five minutes beforethe end of the show. Ten minutes
whatever it was, battery died. That's why it wouldn't come back on.

(02:09:03):
And then after the show, whenI plugged everything back in and walked away
for a few minutes and came back, everything's fine because the power source has
been restored and the battery is charginginside stuff. Nobody cares but me,
but I was. I was justso thrilled that I finally figured this out.
I don't have to have somebody followalong behind me and hold my hand

(02:09:24):
and get me through the shows anymore. And now now it's time for me.
I'm gonna reach out to a guyI met down there at the Fly
Fishing Film Festival at Moody Gardens andsee if we can't do a live broadcast
from the Bahamas. That's where I'maiming for next And no neither one of
you guys can go either. I'mdoing this one all by myself. This
also opens up some cool snowboarding trips, I think again, I'm gonna try

(02:09:46):
to make been a while. Idon't think I'm too old to go snowboarding
anymore, but I think I will. I will choose my my downhill efforts
or my paths. I will choosechoose my trails a little more wisely and
maybe not be as stupid as Iwas when I was younger. It's sure
it's fun to go really fast, but at my age now, when you

(02:10:09):
have sudden stops, it hurts alot more and things can crack and pop.
All right, we're gonna get outhere. We close, melboyn fired
it? I thought, so,how about that? Nailed it. We're
gonna get out of here. Makewhere's Dan Matthews? Is he coming in
or is he not around? Where'she do? We know he's at home,

(02:10:30):
but he's on all right, DanMatthews coming up next on Sports Talk
seven to ninety. I'll be backhere tomorrow morning at eight. Hopefully they'll
be getting in a little more golfup at the Woodlands, and maybe some
of you will have gone out thereand you can call me and tell me
how it was. I can't gotoday. I'll get there another time.
All right, that's it for us. Get outside while you can today while

(02:10:50):
it's not raining, have a littlefun with your family. Be careful.
Watch out for those nasty gnats.I'm allergic to those things. I think
they bite me and I swell uplike a toad, I'll be back to
eight o'clock. Get outside, havesome safe, good fun with your family.
Go catch a catfish. Any placeof water's moving, they'll be in
there snapping. That's it for me. The idios
