Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, let's tip this Saturday morning off, Frank, you
open up those phone lines just to see what happens.
You can't be well, you could be first this morning,
I guess for whoever's out there listening at this moment.
So by all means feel free. Now, why did this
thing do this? I turned off my I turned off
my mouth before I Yeah, there we go. Now it's

(00:22):
back to normal. I've got that taken care of. Ah,
very good, very very good. So, boy, there's a lot
going on in the outdoors world this time of year.
I'll tell you something that it didn't exactly blow my
mind yesterday when I read this and did the calculations,
but it did let me know that we're we're farther

(00:43):
ahead in this year than I actually expected. We are
two months and ten days. Basically two months and nine days,
I guess now out from dove season. Two months and
nine days. We've got nine days left or nine or
ten days left in June, and then we got July

(01:04):
and August and then September. First. We're that close. And
that explains why I've had several people emailing me and
texting me about what shotgun to buy. And I'm not
going to go into a whole lot of that today,
probably not any of it other than right now, But
it just kind of got my attention that it seems

(01:25):
like duck and deer seasons were just yesterday. We were
hunting ducks, we were throwing out decoys, just a couple
of days ago, sitting in blinds, and now all of
a sudden, it's two months and ten days from tough season.
Holy cow. All right, So anyway back to the present,

(01:47):
because that's of far greater importance yesterday. Actually, I looked
at the cameras along the beach front yesterday and it
was that sandy green mix. You look at one picture
one minute and it looks pretty good. You look at
another picture of the next minute it looks kind of sandy,
and just on and on, back and forth. But overall,

(02:10):
it had potential, and I still think it probably does today,
depending on the tide schedule. Isn't exactly great, but it's well, yeah,
the winds come up a little bit up on this
end of the coast too. We've got a lot of
sixteen's in here. Yeah, so sixteen at least it's dead
on shore. I wouldn't be surprised if it was not.

(02:34):
If it was, I wouldn't be surprised if somebody called
and said they caught a couple of trout off the
end of one of the little rock groins or maybe
something like that. I don't know if it's I'll take
a quick look at the webcams here from surfside. Take
a look at it from this morning. Yeah, it's a
little bumpy down at surfside down so the wind's gotten
on it. It's kind of ugly. Yeah, let's just back

(02:57):
off of that whole surf thing. We'll go to something else.
We'll talk to Camille. No, Camille, are you there?

Speaker 2 (03:03):
I am? Can you hear me?

Speaker 1 (03:05):
Barely hear you?

Speaker 2 (03:07):
How about that any better?

Speaker 1 (03:09):
That's a little better. I think we can. I think
we can work with that.

Speaker 2 (03:13):
Awesome.

Speaker 3 (03:14):
Well, I'm headed to Rantis Pass and for an all
women's veteran and first responder kayak.

Speaker 1 (03:23):
Fishing the ben Holy cow, how many people you got
lined up?

Speaker 2 (03:27):
I think she said they're full, so probably around ten
or twelve.

Speaker 1 (03:31):
That's gonna be. Yeah, that's gonna be a fun day,
isn't it. It is.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
It's gonna be a great day on the water.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
So how does this work? Camille. So, all these, all
these first responders who signed up, do they get to
fish with a pretty girl?

Speaker 4 (03:43):
No?

Speaker 2 (03:44):
This one is. This one's all women.

Speaker 1 (03:47):
So oh oh okay, I got it.

Speaker 3 (03:50):
This one yeah, and and we do we try to
do periodically all women advents.

Speaker 1 (03:56):
Well, so basically they are all fishing with pretty girls then,
aren't they.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
Yeah? Yeah, just with each other?

Speaker 1 (04:03):
Yes, indeed, So what's what's the target? What are we
fishing for today?

Speaker 2 (04:08):
So we're in the Rens's paths.

Speaker 3 (04:10):
We're probably doing lighthouse slates are brown and rude. I
haven't figured out where my pen is yet. So we're
doing red fish, trout, flounder, but mostly.

Speaker 1 (04:21):
Reds, the usual suspects, as they say, exactly and just
just so these guys aren't just kind of snickering right now.
Talk about the skill level of the people who are
going to be fishing here, Well, some of.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
These aren't gonna be first respect our first time.

Speaker 1 (04:39):
That's okay, good for them.

Speaker 3 (04:41):
Yeah, some of them they have never been out on
a kayak, never been out saltwater fishing. A lot of
them grew up around here, they work around here, so yeah.

Speaker 5 (04:52):
They fish.

Speaker 1 (04:54):
They're the sleepers, they're the ones who are gonna win.
You know that except for what there's gonna be run.
There's gonna be that one person who never caught a fish,
who's gonna catch the perfect slot red fish.

Speaker 2 (05:04):
Yeah, beginner's luck always.

Speaker 1 (05:06):
You know it. Yeah, I'm glad they're getting out there.
You can't have a next time until you have a
first time.

Speaker 3 (05:12):
You know.

Speaker 1 (05:13):
This is awesome. How's how's the weather look down there today?

Speaker 2 (05:17):
That's beautiful?

Speaker 1 (05:18):
Oh good, Yeah.

Speaker 3 (05:20):
It's I'm about to cross Coconut kind of check to
see what the surf looks like or what the water
looks like. Yeah, but yeah, the winds like down it's.

Speaker 2 (05:34):
Scattered light clouds. Yeah, it's a beautiful.

Speaker 1 (05:38):
Day on the Texans. Ideal conditions for a little paddling.
Paddling competition, fish catching competition. How are you doing? How's
the kayak business? You're still in it? I am, I am.

Speaker 2 (05:51):
But I'm more I'm more.

Speaker 3 (05:52):
Into the taking veterans and first responders.

Speaker 1 (05:57):
That's fantastic. Yeah, I have When do you have another
event up this way?

Speaker 3 (06:05):
I'm you know, right now, Doug, I'm looking for volunteers
to take over my Galveston chapters. Okay, my my coordinator
that I had down there for years.

Speaker 2 (06:18):
I've been deployed on me.

Speaker 1 (06:19):
Oh no, I.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
Know, I know. But so I've got some great support team.

Speaker 3 (06:27):
Up in that area, but I need somebody to take
the reins and help coordinate the events throughout the year.
They have equipment, they have everything ready to go. I
just need a couple of warm bodies.

Speaker 1 (06:42):
Okay. One of the qualifications you need is just in
case somebody is interested this morning. What do you need?

Speaker 3 (06:48):
I don't, you know, A little kayak fishing experience would help. Yeah,
and a willingness to you know, understand how to put
together an events. And the events are easy. Pick a location,
set of time, put it in you know, put it
in event bright and get people out there.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
So, I mean, it's it's not it's a lot of work,
but it's not hard work.

Speaker 1 (07:18):
Well it's also very rewarding work too, you know.

Speaker 2 (07:21):
It is it is. They say that some of the
best healing is giving back.

Speaker 5 (07:28):
M h.

Speaker 1 (07:29):
I couldn't agree.

Speaker 3 (07:31):
Yeah, I you know, it's why I do what I
do at this point in my life.

Speaker 1 (07:35):
You know, well you forgot, you forgot one very important
step in in event planning for these things, and that's
to call me okay, every time, Camille, every.

Speaker 2 (07:44):
Time, please, I know, I know you're right. Well, at
least I remember to call you this morning.

Speaker 1 (07:52):
Yeah, we're not totally going. We can we can remember
some things. Huh. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (07:59):
Well you know I am getting old.

Speaker 1 (08:01):
No no, no, no, no, no, no no, just anytime,
anytime you feel old, look up my birthday.

Speaker 3 (08:11):
Captain Scott's down fishing your neck of the woods today.

Speaker 6 (08:15):
Is he?

Speaker 7 (08:16):
Now?

Speaker 1 (08:16):
Okay, he is.

Speaker 2 (08:18):
He's fishing.

Speaker 3 (08:19):
I don't know, some tournament down in Galveston this weekend. Okay,
it's it's more him and carry Marcus.

Speaker 1 (08:27):
Yeah, very good crew there.

Speaker 2 (08:29):
Yeah show.

Speaker 3 (08:32):
Yeah, well you know it's more about them getting together.

Speaker 1 (08:35):
Yeah, I'll figure.

Speaker 3 (08:38):
Yeah, so it's an excuse for them to get out
on a boat together.

Speaker 1 (08:43):
Well imagine that.

Speaker 2 (08:47):
Yeah exactly. I would like to be a fly on
the boat though.

Speaker 1 (08:51):
Oh my god, oh your ears would burn. No, I know,
holy cow. Well okay, so how do people get in
touch with you since you're still at the helm here
and learn more about what you're doing.

Speaker 2 (09:06):
It's at Heroes on the Water dot org.

Speaker 1 (09:10):
Heroes on the Water dot org. That's very easy, it is, it.

Speaker 3 (09:15):
Is, and you can find everything you need to know
about us on our website, including any events that we
have across the US, because we've got fifty seven chapters
in twenty six states.

Speaker 1 (09:29):
Wow, so you've got half of you get the other half.

Speaker 3 (09:34):
I agree, I agree wholeheartedly. But yeah, all of our
events are listed there. All about us is there.

Speaker 2 (09:42):
We've got some phenomenal stories on there.

Speaker 3 (09:47):
About some of our participants, their career stories.

Speaker 2 (09:52):
As well as they're on the waters stories.

Speaker 1 (09:56):
So also at that website, is there information on if
somebody sitting there going you know, I think I could
do that give Is there contact information for you?

Speaker 8 (10:05):
There?

Speaker 3 (10:06):
There is on the bottom of Yeah, on the bottom
of the web, on any page on our website.

Speaker 2 (10:12):
Down on the bottom there's start. There's a thing called
start Chapter.

Speaker 1 (10:16):
Oh okay, and it gives.

Speaker 2 (10:19):
You all the details and a link to my calendar.

Speaker 1 (10:22):
And my contact perfect perfection. Camille, No, thank you so
much number one for doing what you're doing and number
two for letting me be a part of it.

Speaker 2 (10:32):
Thank you, Doug. I appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (10:34):
That's my pleasure, you know, at anytime, Camille, good day, Yeah,
drive safe by bay. Holy cow, what a great thing
she has been. She's kind of quiet, about this stuff
is she She works so hard behind the scenes. And
if you're if you're interested in helping her with this
chapter up here, great jump on. She can talk you

(10:56):
through it. She can walk you through it, and you'll
be surprised at what a wonderful, wonderful opportunity this is
to help a lot of people who will truly appreciate it.
First responders, first responders, military, just like the name says,
heroes on the water. It gives them an opportunity to

(11:19):
do some stuff, gives them an excuse to go fishing,
and I love doing that for people who who probably
don't get as many opportunities as they deserve, certainly to
get away from their jobs. Jobs are very stressful. You
can get them away from that job and put them
on the water in a kayak. Maybe they catch a fish,
maybe they don't, but they won't care. They truly won't.

(11:42):
They'll be happy to be on the water. Seven one
three two one two five seven ninety Email me Dougpike
at iHeartMedia dot com. Yeah, I looked at the surf
yesterday and it did show a little potential. Like I
was talking about way back there, five minutes ago. Whenever
it was ten minutes. I think that's that window has closed. Unfortunately,

(12:05):
it's looking pretty bumpy on the cameras. I'll do some
snooping during the break to see kind of where there
might be someplace.

Speaker 8 (12:13):
You know.

Speaker 1 (12:13):
The good news is right now trout fishing is just
is so much better than it was a year ago
thanks to that limit. And we're going to talk about
that some and and how how much fruit this new
tree has already borne just in a year and a
couple of months. On the way out, though, here's what
I got to hang on one second. Let me go
take a look at this. See what this is. I'm

(12:36):
looking for your list, Frankie, there it is right there. Okay,
that's what I needed to know. And on the way
out now I can tell you about American shooting centers
Western or Parkway between Katie and Highway six. It's not
hard to find. And believe me, these You're driving through
a flat place through Attics reservoir basically while it's dry,

(12:57):
and all of a sudden, there's these dirt berms on
the north side of the road, on the north side
of West Timber Parkway. That's American shooting centers. And those
berms out there have received I don't know, a bajillion
tons of lead over the years. They're start at five yards,
go out to six hundred yards on the rifle and

(13:19):
pistol range, and then there are three Sporting Clas courses.
Because the owner at Origia is a Sporting Clays fanatic,
he loves shooting and he's a very good shot too.
Don't bet against him. There is a eight nine ten
I think it is Sporting Clays. I'm not Sporting Clays
ten trap in ski fields, several five stands setups around

(13:39):
the property and a beginner's wing shooting area as well
as well. Also a little pop up silhouette range so
you and the kids can go over there with a
twenty two and shoot for an hour or so, maybe
two hours and not burn up a whole lot of
money and ammunition. Excellent instruction available for any shooting to discipline.

(14:00):
American Shooting Centers has been out there since around the
turn of the century, somewhere in that range. I can't
remember exactly when I was there for the groundbreaking. Actually
as a cub reporter, an outdoor writer, young guy for
the paper, and I couldn't not be at that because
I was so into the shooting sports as well. American

(14:20):
Shooting Centers dot com. Everything you need to enjoy the
shooting sports today a little bit more than you did yesterday.
American Shooting Centers dot com. If you are thinking about
a little bit of golf today southside of town, you
don't want to drive too far you live down there,
or you live far away and you want to drive
to the south side for some reason. Maybe on the
way to the beach, get in eighteen holes before you go.

(14:43):
Fish Timber Creek will take care of you. Or just
a few miles off the golf freeway a little bit
west of the golf freeway on twenty three point fifty
one in Friendswood. Very easy to find, very fun place
to play. Got a great instructional staff down there with
JJ Woods at his bunch, and they want nothing more
than for you to have a good time and shoot

(15:03):
your best score ever on their golf course. Greens are
usually in pretty good shape, whole course is usually in
pretty good shape. And it's a very interesting layout in
that it's architect created a space where if you just
stand on your tea box, the right tea box for
your abilities, you stand there and kind of eyeball it.
You'll see exactly where you need to hit that ball

(15:25):
to set yourself up for a good second shot. There's
no tricks, there's no hidding anything, no blind shots. It's
just all right out in front of you, which makes
it a little fun, a little more fun than a
lot of golf courses around here, the ones that try
to just beat you up on the way around. There
are a few of those around here. Not timber Creek, though.
Everybody there making sure you have a good time. Halfway

(15:48):
through you can get something to eat and drink. Afterward
you can go inside and have a full meal and
a couple of cocktails if you want to. Timber Creek
Golf Club dot com. Make a tea time right now,
timber Creek off Club dot com. All right, welcome back
to Doug Pike Show on Sports Talk seven ninety. Thanks
for listening. Let me go straight to Jim. He's been
sitting there a little bit of a wall. Jim. What's

(16:09):
up man, Hey Doug, how's it going this morning? I'm great, man,
feel good? Got a little cot do you?

Speaker 4 (16:17):
I'm not a coffee drinker, but anyway, you and I
are kind of have ESPN today, As I'd like to say,
been watching the surf the past few days, thought it
was gonna be pretty good, and then it kind of
fizzled out. But then I said, well, hey, I bought
a you we actually used a Remington eleven twenty gauge

(16:39):
I know, about two weeks ago, and I am headed
to American Shooters.

Speaker 1 (16:44):
As we speak.

Speaker 4 (16:45):
Good for you just turned off I ten on the
highway sexy and going out there to to uh try
it out.

Speaker 1 (16:55):
Yeah, good for you, man.

Speaker 4 (16:56):
You bet had a twelve gage years ago and ended
up just saying, heck, I've been looking for this twenty
for several years and finally found one at a really
decent price out there at the Pasadena gun Show.

Speaker 1 (17:12):
So yeah, So why the twenty games? You're just tired
of shooting twelves.

Speaker 4 (17:19):
No, I've got a wife, and uh I have four
daughters also with my wife, and my youngest daughter wanted
to get into duve shooting, and oh yeah, I gave that.
I bought them a little old eight seventy pump a
while back, and it's a good story. It's kind of
like that semi automatic, and you know, it doesn't kick

(17:40):
near as hard either, so not at all. Yeah, I've
been listening to you for years and years and just
to hunt with you out on the Katie Prairie.

Speaker 1 (17:52):
I hope we had some good there were a lot
of them. Yeah, oh yeah.

Speaker 4 (17:55):
You and I've talked before about bo and some of
his adventures and my gosh, uh my dad. He's eighty
nine years old and he listens to you every weekend.

Speaker 1 (18:07):
So that's awesome. Do you hear me talk a minute ago,
Jim about how close we are to dub Sea's really
ten days and two months from dumb Sea. I know.
I'm telling you.

Speaker 4 (18:17):
I'm telling you I found a place. Actually, you helped me.
About four years ago. I had a place that all
my family was going to go to, brothers and day
dad and uh end up they got sick. So I
was sitting there thinking what the heck do I do?
And I heard you talking about this special white wing
hunting and down in El Campo. Yes, sir, so I've

(18:41):
been hunting down in El Campo for about the past
five years and I haven't been having some really good hunts.
And now he's getting too expensive. I thought for a
daily you know, but he's such a good guy.

Speaker 1 (18:56):
You know and treats you.

Speaker 4 (18:57):
Right, you kind of don't mind the paying that extra money.

Speaker 1 (19:01):
You know, You're right looking back to when you and
I were hunting. The experience now is just so expensive,
isn't it.

Speaker 4 (19:10):
Yeah, I'm telling you I used to hunt at that
exam I lived. I grew up off it in Wilcrest, so, uh,
you know out there and also over off a Braburn
Village country club. I used to go fishing ponds on
that golf court out there when I was a little kid,
so me both. It's just I know, that's why I

(19:30):
brought it up.

Speaker 8 (19:31):
You know.

Speaker 4 (19:32):
It's a lot of fun, you know, just completely different
these days it was.

Speaker 1 (19:37):
Indeed, Jim, it's great to hear from you.

Speaker 4 (19:39):
Man.

Speaker 1 (19:39):
Go go have some fun in American.

Speaker 4 (19:42):
I'm going to and I will talk to you later.
Good hunting, good fishing, and then a good life to you.

Speaker 1 (19:48):
If you can find Ed or Riggy out there. Telling him,
I said, hello, will you Ed?

Speaker 5 (19:54):
Ed?

Speaker 1 (19:54):
Yeah, he's the guy who owns a place. Just ask
for Ed. Okay, good day, I'll tell him. Thanks you
see bad, thank you, bye bye. All right, Well, so
he's getting to go do something fun today. Anybody else
anybody else want to call him, just brag. Yeah, I'm
going shooting today because the surf wasn't clean enough for
me to go fishing. That's okay. That's why we like

(20:16):
all the outdoor sports because it gives you options. On
any given day. If it had been a little bit
different at the beach, you might have headed south, if
it had been a little bit windier or hotter. Well,
he's going early. That's a good thing. That's a very
good idea too this time of year, especially if you
want to go break in a new rifle or something,

(20:38):
because once that barrel heats up, it's the rifle's not
gonna shoot at its best. It's just gonna make the
rounds get a little wonky going down the barrel and
getting out of there. So take advantage of the early
morning relative cool. And by relative I mean it's probably
I don't know, it's probably seventy five or so right now,

(20:59):
seventy eight, maybe seventy nine, I don't know what it
is already, but it's going to the high nineties today,
I'm pretty sure. And I would not want to be
out there trying to sight in a rifle that ninety
five degrees not unless you got a few hours on
your hands and a little shade to sit under. Seven
one three two one two five seven ninety Email me
Doug pick at iHeartMedia dot com. I was looking at

(21:20):
the offshore forecast this morning and it's almost just a
it's like deja vu. It's like groundhog Day. It's like
groundhog Day. Four to five feet, four to five feet,
four to five feet four feet, four feet four feet,
and it's been that way for a long time. And
that's just not that's not fun fishing. I know a

(21:41):
lot of guys who will say, oh, that's that's not bad.
Let's go. And if you want to stay inshore, which
would be a good option down south, way down south
where the water falls off after not having millions of
years of runoff from the Mississippi River pile it all up.
Our water gets choppy because it's so relatively shallow so

(22:05):
far out. The forecast for even out to just inside
twenty miles is three to four feet for the next
several days. And that's doable. That's doable in a decent
sized boat. You don't want to be going out there
in a sixteen foot center console or a walk through
windshield some grandpa's old ski boat. But if you've got

(22:26):
a reasonably seaworthy boat underneath you, you can go fish
three three footers three to four feet. But once you
get out into that four and five stuff, which usually
means it's going to be like five to seven when
you get out there, that's not comfortable anymore. It's just
and honestly, I've fished in worse. I've fished a lot

(22:48):
of bill fish tournaments over the years. The boats can
take it, and we routinely had to just leave and
go out there with everybody else in six to eight,
seven to nine, and you just got bounced around and
beat up all day. But I'm old enough now and
I've made that trip enough times and know how unpleasant

(23:10):
it's going to be for me. Anyway, I got tossed
around a lot. I'm not a terribly while wasn't then
a terribly heavy person, and I just the golf of
Mexico beat the tar out of me. At some point
in your life you just decide that comfort matters a
little bit more, especially when you're talking about offshore fishing.

(23:30):
And once you've drawn that line and made that decision,
it really it becomes fun again. It becomes the enthusiasm
comes back, because you know when you leave the dock
that morning, not this morning, but that morning, then it's
gonna be a nice fun lazy rollers. Maybe just get

(23:50):
a nice time span between the swells and not big swells,
then it's a whole lot of fun. Dead flat. On
the other hand, now that in August no breeze offshore,
that's almost as bad as I don't know, rough water.
I think I would maybe take over over sixty eighty

(24:11):
miles off shore dead seas, just flat calm in August.
That'll toast your cookies pretty quick. Already at the bottom
of this hour. Holy cow, all right, made it through
the first half hour. Let me tell you on the
way out here, speaking of rough water and whatnot, storm season,
we're smacking it now almost to full well with twenty

(24:34):
days into it, twenty one days into it anyway, and
so far, so good. But at some point some kind
of storm's going to blow up in the Gulf, and
if it makes it to us, you better hope your
trees are in good shape and can take it. Champion
Tree Preservation will send an arborist to your house to
make sure your trees are ship shaped, so to speak.

(24:58):
Make sure those root systems are s. Make sure there
are no injured or damaged limbs that are gonna come
flying off in a little bit of a blow. Get
them out there. They'll tell you straight up, Okay, this
tree's fine, this tree's fine, that one needs some pruning,
that one over there needs some food, and this one

(25:18):
here it's got to go. And once you get through
all that process, by the way, all the work they're
gonna do is gonna be done by very highly trained
and expert staff people who will come out there and
been trimming trees and taking care of trees for decades.
And then on top of that, they own all of
their equipment, which is which is not something every tree

(25:41):
company around here can say. Champion Tree Preservation can They
can say that because they do. And they also if
you have to, if you have to replace a tree,
they also own a tree farm right close to wherever
you're sitting right now, so that's handy as well. Except
for Mark over in Georgia, they're not convence it to you, Mark, Sorry,

on spour Talk seven ninety Dugpike Show, Thank you for listening.
I do appreciate it, truly do so does Frankie. I
think you appreciate him. Frankie, Yeah, yeah, yeah, I figured
you might. Uh where to go? Where do I want
to go? Here?

Speaker 2 (26:40):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (26:40):
Trout fishing, you can't ignore that. Gosh, it's it's been
good and getting better for the last well for the
last since a year ago.

Speaker 5 (26:50):
May.

Speaker 1 (26:51):
Let's just take it all the way back when we
went down to three fish and said, you know, enough's
enough of over harvesting these fish. Enoughs enough of having
a freeze whittle that population down to nearly nothing and
threaten a far worse issue than just having a few trout.
It's good. It's good from one end of the coast

(27:13):
to the other, and I hope it keeps up for
many many years to come. I hope I get to
go fish. Some of these places I haven't been in
a while too. I used to it before my son
was born. I was out as much as I was in.
I was up and down this coast. I fished all
the way around the Gulf Coast, all the way up
the East coast to Maine, and just didn't miss a

(27:35):
lick and had a tremendous time doing that. And now
looking back, there are a lot of places that I
want to I want to see again. I want a
second chance at some of those fish, a second chance
to see some of the things I saw. And he's
darned near fully independent. He still he still comes around

(27:58):
to get gas, money and food. But actually I can't
say that about him much. He's still he's working, and
so he's he's earning his own money. But yeah, there
are places I want to go. I've still got snooked
to catch I want. I haven't caught a snook in
a while, and that really needs to be remedied soon,
and I'm thinking about when and where I'll do it.
I'm gonna either go to South Texas because I got

(28:18):
some friends down there. I think I could hop in
with and and do a little snooke fishing. Down there,
or I may just jump on a plane and go
over to Florida and try to fish with Mark Nichols
again before he and I both get too old to
go do that. I don't think that's anytime soon for
either of us, frankly, but we're not the spring chicks

(28:38):
we once were, that's for sure. And in fairness, Florida
does have bigger snook than we have, and more they. Yeah,
that's just where I want to go if I'm going
to go catch them. Very healthy population here though, and honestly,
if we can, if we can avoid severe winter weather

(28:58):
for a few more years, uh, this snook population is
gonna keep creeping up our way uppear toward Galveston. The
next one that gets caught off the surfside, Jetty won't
be the first one. I can assure you. I watched
a kid catch one one day years ago, years ago,
and he and his buddy knew exactly what they had

(29:19):
and told me, in fact that, yeah, they caught a
bigger one the day before, so those fit. And I
know enough about snook to know that one strike that
I got walking in throw on the top water along
the rocks right at dark one one year one hundred
years ago. Whenever it was. That was a snook bite.
That was not a trout bite. That was a snook bite.

(29:41):
And I'll never believe anything different. And it was a
significant fish, a very significant fish. And of course I
missed it, totally missed it. Seven one three two one
two five seven ninety Email on me, Doug Pike at
iHeartMedia dot com. I've got that. Checked that box, check
that box. You know what I would I would love

(30:03):
to be and I'm thinking about this is a good
question for the day. Actually that spark a little interest
and get your minds working. I wouldn't mind being in
dropped into a time machine with the gear I have
now and taken back. For a long time, Texas had
a commercial snook fishery. There were that many snook, big

(30:25):
giant snook in Texas and so many of them that
it supported a commercial fishery for many many years. And
I would love to go back with what I have
now and just be dropped into that mix for a
little while and be able to go wade the surf
and catch giant snook. Now you can still catch one
every now and then off Corpus. That's I'm gonna be

(30:47):
heading there and not too far into the future for
a couple of days, and who knows if if the
weather's right, we might pop one. We might we might not,
might pop a little tarpaan in the surf, might catch
some big trout in the surf. That's a great place
to do that. And it's a little more consistent down
there than up here. But the time machine would take
me back to when there were and trout, well, trout, yes,

(31:08):
of course, and snook and redfish and tarpin all up
and down the coast, all up and down the coast.
Most of you in this audience probably are a little
too young to realize that Galveston Bay in the heat
of summer was home to some really big tarpet I
mean tarpin in the one hundred, one hundred and fifty

(31:29):
pound class. They were in there every summer, and we
fished for them regularly and caught them and caught them
not every day, not any different than just offshore where
most of that tarpainfishing goes on now. But they were
there and a lot of people were catching them. Little

(31:49):
ones built. There were little ones at the jetties that
juveniles were at the jetties, you could go catch them,
and it was it was just a different time. I'm
kind of interested. So the question for the day and
either actually I don't care, hunting, fishing, whatever, if you
could hop into a time machine with the gear you
have now to enjoy the outdoors and have unrestricted access

(32:10):
to the outdoors in that period. For when and for
where would you set the dials? Waterfowl in the eighties,
speckle trout in the nineties, red fish, I don't know,
no reason to go anywhere. But now for redfish, Holy cow,
we've got plenty. Although it was it was really really
good until it got really really bad thanks to all

(32:32):
the gill nets and purse sayings and whatnot. They were
on the brink. Redfish were there were. Captain Scott and
I have talked about this more than once about how
many days sometimes we would go fish in the bay,
and he as a guide and all the other guides too,

(32:52):
go for days and not catch a single red fish.
You might catch a bunch of trout with your guys
your clients, but you may not catch a red fish
for days. Now I think it would be almost it
would be harder to get to a day when you
didn't catch a red fish than it was to catch
one back then. Even very interesting way to look at that,

(33:16):
you know. And here's a twist on that too. I
would I wouldn't mind going seven or eight, maybe ten
years into the future to see just how good trout
fishing is going to be once this three fish limit
really gets its teeth sunk into the whole deal a
few more years under its belt. I don't think we'll
ever see a return to five fish, by the way,
and I don't have a problem with that at all.

(33:37):
Nobody should with all the pressure on coastal resources. Now,
three is a fair number, and it's worth getting used to.
The Parking Wallet Department has sent out surveys for the
past several years, a lot of years saying, hey, the
red fish population is doing really really good. You want
to you want another fish on your stringer and recreational fishermen,

(34:02):
the people who are responding to these surveys are saying, no, no,
leave it alone. We're happy to be able to go
out there and catch all those fish. We can't bring
home as many, but that's okay with us, and it's
working out really really well, really really well. If you
didn't experience all that people my age have experienced. You

(34:23):
don't really have the history of knowing how bad it
can get. You've seen a few freezes, probably, but you've
never really known how bad red fishing got. Because those
fish were grossly overfished. It's hard to kill them with
freezer heat. A red fish, I think could could live
in a bucket of damp sawdust. I've written that and

(34:46):
talked about it many times. They're just that tough. The
speckled trout are pretty fragile, and when they go, they
go hard. Those freezes back in the eighties wiped out
some bays, virtually white them out, not entirely, but close,
very close for years. It was years before they recovered,

(35:06):
and we changed a limit from five fish to three,
and suddenly happy days are here again all over the
bay system. I'm happy, I really am. All right, we
got to take another break all the way out. Let
me tell you about El Kubano Cigars. This is Manny
Manny Lopez started this business with his dad. They came
here from Cuba after working both of them in Cuban

(35:30):
cigar factories. They knew the business inside and out, and
when they came to America to live the American dream.
They opened a cigar manufacturing place right down in Texas City.
It's one of only about four dozen in the entire
country where cigars are actually made. The rest of them.
Anything else you're getting it not if it's not coming

(35:52):
out of one of those places. It's imported and it's
been on a ship or a plane or whatever for
days or weeks. And this is not really the quality
of cigar that Manny and his dad vowed from day
one that they would provide to anybody and everybody who
wants them. They ship thousands of cigars every week all
over the country. They make one hundred and fifty something.

(36:16):
I think it is different varieties made with Cuban seed
tobacco typically that's grown in Central America. Everything's on the
up and up. You're not going to be They're not
bringing stuff in they shouldn't have.

Speaker 6 (36:28):
No.

Speaker 1 (36:28):
This tobacco is all moved straight through customs, as it
should be, and it is some of the finest Cuban
seeded tobacco you'll ever get in a cigar. He made
some for us over here at iHeart and the cool thing.
If you have clients or friends or some special event
that can be marked with cigars. If for all the

(36:51):
people who want to smoke one many can make the
individual bands for the cigars. He can make custom boxes
anything you liked to really set your party apart from everybody's,
or set your wedding apart, or set your congratulatory celebration
of some sort. Whatever. It is. A golf tournament, man,

(37:13):
you'll come out there. He'll set up one of those
little pop up canopies and a six foot table and
a couple of chairs, and he'll sit there and roll
cigars for your guests. It's a pretty special thing. And
there's no middleman either. The cigar prices are not that
high because there's nobody in the middle trying to make
a couple of bucks off each one. Too. You're buying
them from the manufacturer. Be like going up to Detroit

(37:36):
and getting the truck as it rolled off the line.
El Cubano Cigars dot Com is a website or good people,
really good people. I've gotten to know a couple of them.
They've got two smoking lounges, one in Texas City, one
in League City.

Speaker 7 (37:51):
Go check it out.

Speaker 1 (37:52):
It's a lot of fun and you'll get the best
cigars you've ever smoked El Cubano Cigars dot com. Hi,
welcome back, Dug Pike Show on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Where are you going in your time machine? I'm not kidding.
I started thinking about this. I would have loved to
go back and have a second crack at those geese

(38:13):
and ducks that we had down here in the when
the prairie was at its prime. And it's not like
I got cheated. It's not like I didn't have enough
experiences down there or out there to last a lifetime.
But holy mackerel, I would just love and I'd take

(38:34):
my son with me. That's who I want to see it, really,
because he's had a couple of goose hunts, he's had
a couple of duck hunts, but it's just nothing like
the experience that I and anybody who was out there
alongside us had. And it was both sides of town too.
It wasn't isolated just to the Kadi Prairie that's just

(38:55):
where I was hunting. East side of town had its
sheare geese and my god, every night, every night during winter,
if you walked outside, you would hear geese trading back
and forth between the two prairies. Now, it's I honestly don't.

(39:16):
I can't say with absolute certainty that I heard any
geese fly over my house last year last winter, and
I know they were out there some but not many. Oh,
I need to go talk to this guy right now.
Who oh, Okay, that one's still ringing. I gotta I
gotta let Frankie do his thing before I can hook

(39:38):
up with these dudes. See, can I can I take
that first one, Frankie? Oh okay, Yeah, I can do that.
Queer him up for me, and you sort out whatever
the other one is. Oh okay, Robert, what's going on,
my man? I got a hunt? You're about to start

(39:59):
bragging on me. I'm a little scared.

Speaker 6 (40:01):
Well, no, I'm I'm in between jobs and buddy, so
there ain't no fishing for me today.

Speaker 1 (40:07):
But you know, hey, you know I sent you a
couple of them picks this week, and I was glad
to see him coming back in. Man. I tell you, it's.

Speaker 6 (40:15):
Been been a hot minute since I had a little
good action back there, or at least have the time
to get out back and do some good fishing. But
I'll tell you what then, Mullet, then mullet are just
I think.

Speaker 1 (40:27):
They're just breeding right there.

Speaker 9 (40:29):
Man.

Speaker 6 (40:29):
They're stacked and uh oh, they are stacked in and
there's I mean from the babies.

Speaker 1 (40:34):
To the to the mamas and the baby.

Speaker 6 (40:37):
So it's uh, it's definitely some good actions. So I
just said, you know what I'm gonna I'm gonna have
my take a little look on using some of them and.

Speaker 1 (40:46):
Throughout the cast net. And that was all she wrote.

Speaker 6 (40:49):
It seemed like that's been the uh.

Speaker 1 (40:52):
The food of choice lately. You know, it's hard to
get a redfish to turn down a mullet. I don't
know what you could put out there that they go
for faster, really they like them. Yeah, and uh yeah,
that little so that little Atlantic sharp nose, I was
that was pretty interesting bite. Oh you know, I was.

Speaker 6 (41:13):
I was a little afraid to hold on to him
too much.

Speaker 1 (41:16):
He was ingling, man, he was ready to get back
in that water. So I you know, I had to keep.

Speaker 6 (41:22):
Make sure I keeped all my my fingers away from
my mouth. But uh, he was he was easily probably
eighteen inches.

Speaker 1 (41:30):
Yeah, okay, that a little baby young.

Speaker 6 (41:31):
Of these Oh yeah, he was baby, But I mean,
I I was, I was actually surprised he didn't cut
my leader line.

Speaker 4 (41:38):
You know.

Speaker 1 (41:38):
Yeah, well, don't believe for a second that he couldn't
chomp a finger if he wanted.

Speaker 6 (41:43):
It exactly exactly. Oh yeah, but uh no, it was fun.
So that water was that water's looking good. It's nice
and green and other temperatures, uh low eighties right now. Yeah,
it's yeah, it's definitely some action. So hope all is well, buddy.

Speaker 1 (42:04):
It is well. Man, I gotta get back down there.
I haven't seen it in a long time. We need
to go. Sure, Okay, I'm gonna take some time off.
I am. I'm gonna take more time off this year
so I can go fish with friends, and you're one
of them. Thanks man, thank you. Yes, I'll be ready
to take care. Ok audios, Oh I can't. He lives
in an undisclosed location in the Galveston area. It doesn't

(42:28):
matter where, but he's got water access right out his
back door, and he gets some pretty good He gets
some pretty good seven one three, two, one two five
seven ninety Email on me Doug Pike at iHeartMedia dot com.
I am kind of curious. I hope some of you
will participate in my great time machine question this morning,

(42:51):
where would you go and win for outdoor stuff? And
you can go anywhere? Pardon me, I got the hiccups
this morning for some reason. You can go anywhere you
want in the world. I don't care anywhere in the
world for any sort of outdoors activity. And that would
bring you know, that would bring up some of the
big game hunting many many years ago sustainably in Africa,

(43:11):
maybe some of the big giant animals over there. Would
you go for dangerous game right up until the point
you were about to get eaten by line? You know,
I haven't read many stories about the bad things that
happened with African hunts for dangerous game, but you know
they're out there, and you know it happened. I'm kind

(43:33):
of curious. I met a guy actually, and as soon
as I tell you this quick story, I'll have to
go to the break at the top of the hour.
I met a guy at a Houston Safari Club show once.
He was a guide from over in Africa, and we
were talking and just using our hands to talk like
outdoorsman do. I had to show you the size of

(43:54):
the fish, where the antlers were all that stuff, And
I noticed that the this guy's missing the ring finger
on his right hand, and I just had to know.
I figured there had to be a story. It wasn't
going to be something that happened to him when he
was a little baby or something like that. This was
going to be a real story. And so I'm just
i'mbracing myself and I'm trying to find a place in

(44:16):
the conversation to say, hey, is there a story behind
that finger loss? And I finally found a perfect opening.
It wasn't off putting to him, it wasn't embarrassing at all.
And I got the chance. I asked the question and
just smooth as silk. He didn't dwell on it. Oh

(44:37):
that was from a snake bite. And then we went
on talking about whatever it was we were talking about before that.
It was so casual to him, It just so every
day matter of fact. Oh yeah, that's from snake bite.
He lost a finger to a snake and that's all
he That was enough that shared the whole story in
his world. I cannot imagine being charged by an elephant

(45:03):
or a line. There's another really good elephant story. I
think I'll tell that one maybe when we get back.
This is from a videographer who was over there one time,
and I had the opportunity to meet him here when
he was doing some videography here for another some big,
big company. This guy was one of the best in
the world, and he shared a pretty good story. All Right,

(45:26):
we're gonna take a little break here on the way out.
Belleville Meat Market down there in Belleville, right there on
Main Street. Can't miss the place. And if you can't
see it for some reason, when you get into Bellville,
just roll down your windows and start sniffing. And when
you smell barbecue, drive up wind. It's just that simple.
It's not a big town. You're not gonna get lost.
You'll be able to find Belleville once you get there.

(45:47):
Go inside, get yourself a lunch or a dinner, depending
on the time of day. It's seven days a week.
They serve lunches and dinners, beautiful spread of all the
barbecue stuff you can think of, and even for the kids,
maybe for you, homemade hot dogs and pulled pork. They've
got the those hot dogs, They've got hamburger patties, they've
got stuffed pork tenders, stuffed mushrooms, stuff peppers, These chuck

(46:12):
wagon patties that are really cool. These are half pound
beef patties, seasoned up and loaded with cheddar, cheese, good stuff,
all the things you like to eat when you're traveling.
They've got jerky, they've got dry stick, they've got dry sausage, turkey, jerky,
and keep some of that up there in the console
for when you you don't want to stop, but you

(46:33):
kind of want a little something in your belly. Just
grab something out of that bag. You're gonna be happy
you did. Bellville meat Market been around forever. They process
whild game year round. Just call before you drag something
out there to make sure that that's something that they'll
process this time of year. Bellville Meatmarket dot com. They
are on Highway thirty six, about fifteen minutes north of Seily,

(46:54):
fifteen minutes south of Hempstead. Very easy to find. Bellville
meat Market dot Com eight o three on Sports Talk
seven to ninety The Dugpike Show. Thank you for listening,
greatly appreciate it, and go check these emails real quick
here to see what's going on. Where is mine? Silly mouse? Thought?

Speaker 9 (47:11):
That?

Speaker 1 (47:11):
Ah, that is good? That is good. My buddy, Aaron
Aaron ways in that dude he's referring to Robert, who
could just walk out his back door, throw a cast net,
catch a couple of mullet, and then catch some redfish.
It doesn't matter where that dude is living the dream,
says Aaron. Yeah, he kind of is. It would be

(47:34):
the dream of a lot of us. And I still
can't find anything that he could have to complain about.
I'm sure everybody has something, but he's anytime he's feeling blue,
anytime he's wishing something was different, he can just walk
right out the back door and go catch a redfish.
So and that that that'll make a lot of a
lot of ugly thoughts go away, won't they? Uh, Steve,

(47:58):
Let see Steve. Yeah, he's getting into the time machine
stuff a little bit. Lived most of my life in
Baytown and Seabrook for years, had geese and ducks fly over.
Couldn't tell you the last time I saw or heard
a formation many years. Yeah, it's so sad that we
lost that prairie to development, unfortunately. But you know, it's

(48:22):
hard to blame a farm family when most of the
kids in these farm families, especially during like between the
seventies through about well now a lot of the children
of those farmers, rather than just automatically become farmers when
they became adults to take care of the family farm,

(48:44):
they went off to school, they got their heads turned
by city life and city attractions and city distractions, and
decided to move away from the farm. Farm life was hard,
too much work, too many potential problems, and so they
abandoned the farms. And when their parents passed or retired

(49:09):
and got out of farming, somebody rolled by and hanked
the horn and threw a giant sack of money out
of the door, and the farm got sold, and that
money was either cut up between all the kids and
all of whom probably made enough to be very comfortable

(49:29):
for the rest of their lives, or one sibling maybe
inherited at all. Who knows, maybe mom and Dad were
still around long enough to enjoy some of that profits
that profit as well. With the number of acres that
are being farmed west and east of Houston, and south
and a little bit north, very few, very few and

(49:51):
far between, just enough fortunately for all of us to
attract enough waterfowl to make it really fun and really
convenient for us. There's a lot of places in this country.
You've got to drive three four hours to get to
some place decent to try to hunt a bird. Not here.
Not here. We are very fortunate to live where we do.

(50:12):
Very fortunate. Seven one three two one two five seven
ninety Email me Doug pick At iHeartMedia dot com. I
got kind of tickled this morning. I saw a news
release from the Parks and Wildlife Department and it's it's
it might as well say for for me and most
of my audience, it might as well lead with from

(50:34):
the desk of Captain Obvious the Parks and Wildlife Department,
because we have so many new people in this state,
things that you and I take for granted and don't
don't think twice about. They've got this giant press release
on well. Its title is seven heat Safety Tips to
protect you from the Texas Summer Heat. Frank, you think

(50:58):
you need that? No, that's a very very strong no,
and I would agree one hundred percent. I'm good, you know,
I'll it says last year for sea. Last year, forty
four state parks reported a total of one hundred and
ninety two heat related illnesses, with ten of those incidents

(51:23):
involving pets. Texas recorded thirty six or more heat related
illnesses last year than in twenty twenty three. Well, it's
pretty hot last year, pretty hot last summer. And when
it's hot and you go outside and you get overheated

(51:44):
and you don't go look for shade, you're probably gonna
get ill. Okay, just for fun, Frankie, what do you
think the very first thing they tell you is to
reduce heat related incidents? It says, probably keep hydrated. That's
number one. Not a boy here bat in a thousand,

(52:08):
it says. And here's where it gets even, like, come on,
When aiming to prevent dehydration, it is important to drink
at least sixteen ounces of water every hour. Remember your
furry friends need water too, so don't forget to pack extra,
said everybody in every text, and I note as they

(52:30):
walked out the door in summertime. Yeah, everybody got water,
We got plenty of water. Everybody got what they need.
Yeah yeah, Oh Mojo wihed in on the time machine.
I never thought of this, but I would jump in
that same same time machine, and Frankie, I bet you

(52:51):
would too, without even knowing. Guess where we're going. We're
going back far enough somewhere in the Midwest to see
those massive buffalo herds. Oh wow, would that be cool.
I mean just just as far as the eye can
see nothing but buffalos, and as long as you're upwind

(53:12):
of it, it's a beautiful sight. Yeah, that would be cool.
That is a boy that spot on. Great use of
our time machine. Uh, you've earned a second trip since
you got the coolest thing so far and fishing. That's
kind of almost selfish, the majesty of seeing a half
a million or a million buffalo just grazing on one

(53:38):
hundred thousand acres of wild grass. No, not a barb
wire fence or a road in sight. That's where we
started and it's it's such an amazing concept and so
foreign to any of us who live in contemporary times.
That'd be pretty cool. J Wade in JTK Shooter's Corner.

(54:01):
I'd love to go back in time and be like
Brad Kit or Brad Pitt in Legends of the Falls
when he was in Africa. Yeah, he's getting very specific.
That'd be pretty cool. I'd be I'd be down for that. Yeah,
there's a lot of good times and places in history
that would be fun to visit and not just from

(54:22):
an outdoors perspective. There's a lot of historical events I
wouldn't mind to have attended, but the outdoors thing really
appeals to me. I would like to. Uh, you wouldn't
have to go far back either to get to when
Florida's East Coast Bay fishing, if you will, or just

(54:46):
it's it's not. They are big bodies of water and
they are bays, but they they don't fish like bays
because most of it is just intracoastal waterway and adjoining
water and it's either deep in the ditch or it's shallow.
As soon as you get out of the ditch, you'd
get out of that channel, it is shallow and there

(55:07):
are a lot of fish up in there. It's a
fantastic place, and I've seen it. I've seen it in
its heyday. I got to go down there many times
when I was younger. But i'd like to see I'd
like to go back to that time. It's been difficult
for them. They lost a lot of their coastal grass,
a ton of it, like most of it, and there's

(55:28):
a lot of people who point fingers at different directions
as to why all that grass went away. But the
fish are still managing to be they make themselves available.
It's still some of the best fishing on the continent
for just inshore salt water, and it's it's Texas. If
we if we miss wintertime, problems with our with our

(55:51):
trout fishery, and this three trout limit hangs on like
it's doing and doesn't get changed back. I don't want
to see it reverted back to fish. There's no reason
too much pressure on them. There's no reason to accommodate
three or four loud people who want more fish. Someone

(56:14):
seven ninety email on me, Dougpike at iHeartMedia dot com.
I still in all the places I've fished, though. If
I could only fish in one state for the rest
of my life, I'd stay right here. I'd stay right here.
I don't know of any other state, and I've fished
in it. I think it's thirty five thirty six states,
something crazy like that, and I have yet to find

(56:35):
one that has more variety and more quality of fishing
than Texas. Look up for giggles someday, look up top
or top ten bass in every state, or even the
heaviest bass from every state. And now We're not going
to be at the top of that list. There's going
to be two or three states that have heavier fish

(56:57):
than berries. Dear Berry, Saint Clair, drag him out again.
Eighteen eighteen seems like it's that is the year he
caught it too, But it wasn't. It was nineteen eighties somewhere.
It's been a hot minute, been a hot minute sin
since he caught that fish. And it's still we're churning
out giants. We're just churning out giants.

Speaker 2 (57:18):
All right.

Speaker 1 (57:18):
We got to take another little break here. On the
way out, I'm gonna tell you about black Horse Golf Club.
Out two ninety to Fry Road. Fry Road south about
two and a half three miles. You'll see golf course
on the right. When you see golf course on the
right and the left, put on your westward blinker. That
will be your right blinker if you're coming off to
ninety and drive through the gate and from that point

(57:39):
forward expect to have a fantastic time. Black Horse changed
up a little bit this year when when the calendar
changed to twenty twenty five, they took the south course private,
and so you won't have access to that one unless
you're a member or the guest of a member, but
you will have access still to the North course, which
is a ton of fun. That one's a little softer,

(58:02):
if you may. It's not hard, it's not overly difficult,
but it's just a little more challenging the South courses
than the North. If you spray your driver a little bit,
you're gonna love the North course. It's a beautiful layout,
it's a great condition track, and they've been working hard
all year to make both courses better for anybody and

(58:22):
everybody who comes out there and plays. There are a
lot of options in membership, by the way, with that
South course, one of which actually gets you access also
because they're owned by the same corporation, gets you access
also to Blackhawk Country Club and to both courses at
Golf Club of Houston. Just call the membership director out there,
or just call the club and ask for membership and

(58:45):
they will outline it all for you and might even
invite you out there to come see the place. Golf

If you have trees in your yard and you want
to make sure they stay upright during storm season, which
we're in now, we're twenty one days into it. Strong

(59:05):
I strongly recommend champions tree preservation. The word preservation tells
you what their goal is, what their main focus is
on keeping your beautiful trees upright and healthy in your yard.
If they come out, they'll send it arborus to your house,
a real live arborist, somebody who knows what trees are

(59:27):
supposed to look like and knows what they're supposed to
do for you. Send that arbist out there, take a
look around. If you tree needs food, they'll tell you
it needs food. If it needs trimming, they'll tell you that.
If it needs pruning, they'll tell you that. If it
needs to come out sadly, they'll tell you that, and
they'll tell you why. And once that decision is made,
then they can whatever the work that needs to be done,

(59:49):
they can do it themselves. In very short amount of time.
They'll get all their They have all the equipment they
need to do anything that needs to be done to trees.
It's all their own equipment sitting right there behind a
big old gate and a big old tall fence, so
nobody can take it out of there. And when they
need it they'll bring it to your house and do
whatever you need to do to that tree. Now, if
you are removing one, kind of like getting a tooth pulled,

(01:00:12):
you don't want to leave that hole there. If you
want another tree in your yard, they have an entire
tree farm from which you can choose older trees, younger trees,
different kinds of trees. It's a tree farm. They'll take
care of you. Champion Tree Preservation. They're gonna come to
your property, make that diagnosis for you and make sure

(01:00:33):
that you are ready to make to have your trees
make it through storm season without falling on your house
or your garage, or your fence or anything else. Championstree

Sports Talk seven ninety You know, Frank, you, there's just
nothing better than a stale doughnut and cold coffee. Go oh,
how the mighty have fallen? Yeah, That's what I'm having
for breakfast in here. I did I ate a protein
bar and had a banana on the way in, So
it's not all bad. Let's go talk to Mike shall

(01:01:16):
we Hey Mike, what's up man?

Speaker 9 (01:01:18):
Morning, young man? How you doing today?

Speaker 1 (01:01:20):
You know I'm good, I actually am. I feel pretty
good about the day.

Speaker 9 (01:01:24):
Right, was it a little bit? Younger? And I say
a little bit. I would love to go back and
spend a season hunting, fishing, and trapping with the old
mountain men.

Speaker 1 (01:01:37):
Oh wow, yeah? How far are we talking?

Speaker 7 (01:01:41):
Like?

Speaker 1 (01:01:41):
Eighteen hundreds, eighteen fifteen?

Speaker 9 (01:01:44):
Yeah, seventy wow? Yeah, man, you were talking about buffalo
a few minutes ago.

Speaker 1 (01:01:50):
I'm reading.

Speaker 9 (01:01:51):
I'm reading an old book written back in nineteen forty
five about the buffalo hunting and the four buffalo herds
that were real prominent back about that time. Can you
imagine millions of those buffalo roaming? I mean it would
it would be all inspiring.

Speaker 1 (01:02:12):
You just sit up on a hilltop somewhere on the
back of your horse, of course, and watch buffalo pass
in front of you for hours.

Speaker 9 (01:02:21):
They were talking about uh uh you could smell them
and hear them before you saw them. Oh, I'm sure
the ground would shake so much.

Speaker 1 (01:02:30):
Yeah, that's what I was just thinking. That they would
have to with that much weight trampling the ground. You
would have to be able to feel at from a
long ways off. That's amazing.

Speaker 9 (01:02:39):
Yeah, not a good place to be a groundhog.

Speaker 1 (01:02:42):
I can tell you that only Hell yeah, anything under
those feet, man, that's all I got. Yeah, that's a great,
great thought. I appreciate that.

Speaker 2 (01:02:54):
Mike.

Speaker 1 (01:02:55):
Let's go, h let's go talk to brand and see
what's up Brandon. What do you got going on?

Speaker 5 (01:03:00):
Good morning, mister Pike.

Speaker 1 (01:03:01):
Carry you. I'm good, good good.

Speaker 5 (01:03:05):
Uh. One thing I would I called in last week
and everybody's wondering why we don't have the big trout
like we do in South Texas. And I have a
certain opinion about this. It's because we have urban development
and our number one Everybody wants to blame farmers and
ranchers for fertilizer, pesticides or whatever, but the number one
abuser is as a homeowner.

Speaker 1 (01:03:29):
It is.

Speaker 5 (01:03:29):
And I mean I learned that in I learned that
in college. And the reason why I say that is
how many guys try to put a bike together before
Christmas but don't read the direction.

Speaker 1 (01:03:39):
Of course, Yeah, we don't need to do.

Speaker 5 (01:03:44):
You know. It's like taking medicine. Oh, if one is good,
two is better. So yeah, but I mean it is
I mean, and the reason why I think is South
Texas grows bigger and better trout is because it's still
all natural. It's you don't have the pollutants like you
do here. Up.

Speaker 1 (01:04:01):
Yeah, there's not a whole lot of lawn clippings roll
into the bay through the King Ranch shoreline. Very good, no, sir,
you know right.

Speaker 5 (01:04:11):
You don't have the fertilizer and the pesticide that people
put out there that don't know what they're doing. So
and that's just uh, that's just the way it is.
But I do have a question. I'm looking at buying
like a two seventy or some type of rifle, but
I would want some help in trying to siding in.
I don't want to do it myself.

Speaker 1 (01:04:33):
Why not?

Speaker 5 (01:04:33):
I would like summ Well, I mean, I just want
I just needed some or advice or whatever. Where can
I go to have somebody to help me dial it
in as well?

Speaker 1 (01:04:43):
Go right out to American shooting centers or if there's
a rifle range closer to you, and just take it
out there and have them bore sighted or they can
do the whole sighting for you. It's just going to
cost you a little bit more money. And take a
little bit more time. The best people I know who
do that stuff, they'll sit out there and work with
you in that rifle for an hour and a half

(01:05:04):
two hours to make sure it's as good as it's
gonna get. But if you just the way, the old
school way to do it, if you can't afford some
to pay somebody to do it for you, is to
go out there and just kind of start at like
fifty yards and just get it on the paper somewhere
at fifty yards and then just start kind of working
it in and working it in, and then you're gonna

(01:05:27):
shoot a lot of ammo, and the barrel's gonna get hot,
and you're gonna have to wait until it cools and
do all that stuff. But you can get it. You
can get it kind of done. You can get it
pie plate at two hundred yards the first day you're
out there, and not too long a time.

Speaker 5 (01:05:43):
Right, But it is am I correct when I say
that the number one step is to get it bure
sided first?

Speaker 1 (01:05:51):
Yeah, I mean it's unless you just put the scope
on the rifle, somebody put it on their sideways, you'll
be able to hit paper fifty yards, you know, you'll
get it on that paper as soon as you can
see the whole. Then then you're now you know where
to adjust and how much to adjust, and then just
work it back from there. Takes some time. Get you know,
get a friend to go with you, and just take turns, right, sir,

(01:06:16):
just skip on out to the right region. Enjoy a nice, calm, quiet.

Speaker 5 (01:06:20):
Day, right, yes, sir?

Speaker 1 (01:06:22):
Yeah, man, yeah, if you if you're concerned about doing
it yourself, then I would I would call. I'd go
to American Shooting Centers in a heartbeat. What's what part
of town are you in? I'm over here in Wharton County, Okay, yeah,
that wouldn't be too terribly far. Yeah, it shouldn't be.
Just up fifty nine, uh, fifty nine?

Speaker 5 (01:06:44):
And where are they located?

Speaker 1 (01:06:45):
On West tim Or Parkway between Katie and Highway six.
So I would yeah, I would go. Yeah, I'd go
fifty nine to maybe fifty nine to ninety nine actually,
and then cut up to Katie and get off at
West tim Or Parkway and go back east a little
bit more and you'll be there. Yeah.

Speaker 5 (01:07:04):
Okay, all right, two good reasons to go then, huh
all right, thanks Brandon.

Speaker 1 (01:07:13):
I'll see you very much, man. That's yeah. If you're
if you're hesitant for any reason to get anything done
to a gun, just get out your wallet and hand
it over to a professional and it will be returned
to you exactly as you like. Tell them what you want.
I need you to. I need you to cite this

(01:07:33):
rifle in where it's hunting season ready, and in a
day or two you can go back there and pick
it up and it'll be hunting season ready. Cite it
in to perform its best. One of the things about
citing a rifle Brandon, by the way, is if you're
going to do that yourself, or even if you're going
to do it with let somebody else do it. Know

(01:07:53):
that every rifle out there has a particular favorite AMMO
that it's going to be more accurate with. It's like,
it's kind of like we all have favorite foods, we
all have favorite drinks. Rifles have they like to eat
favorite AMMO. And the best way to figure out which
is going to be best for your rifle without breaking

(01:08:14):
the bank is to find Now you're buying a two seventy,
then you find a couple of other guys who also
have two seventies, and then each of you go buy
a box or two of two seventy AMMO. You buy
different stuff. You know, one guy gets some Winchester, one
gets Remington, one gets whatever, and maybe a different bullet size,

(01:08:37):
even a different bullet weight, something different about each of
those rounds, and you can get as many different kinds
as you want with two seventy. They probably have two
dozen options in a decent store. And you take that
out to the range and you make sure your rifle
is pretty well sited in as best it's going to be,
and then run three rounds through with each different kind

(01:08:59):
of AMA with the same temperature on your barrel. You gotta,
if you gotta, let it cool off, Let it cool
off a little bit, plan to spend some time out there.
Nobody's gonna run you off. All three of you shoot
the different amos through your guns, and I guarantee you
every one of them is every one of those rifles
is gonna like one more than the other, and shoot
a tighter group. My seven mag I don't know why

(01:09:23):
I got so lucky, but my seven mag likes, and
I still have a couple of boxes of these things.
Just an old Remington cartridge that was basically the cheapest
box of shells you could get, cheapest box of rifle
cartridges you could buy in seven mag and I tried
some really high priced ones. I tried some really fancy ones,

(01:09:45):
and everything fell that. They just they didn't shoot as
tight as that cheap stuff in ifels. Happy as a
little lark because I didn't have a lot of money
back then. It was a good find. Seven one three

the Star Tournament. Coastal Conservation Association Star Tournament been around
for gosh, close to forty years now thirty years. I'm
not sure how long. It's been a darned long time,
I know that. And they have given away millions upon
millions in prizes. This year's total prize packages are worth

(01:10:26):
about one point nine million dollars, and they want you
to win these prizes. All these are all sponsor funded.
It's all it's all bought and paid for already. You
don't have to worry about taking money away from CCA
when you win the prize no, no, no. That's all
the money that the members donate to CCA for membership,

(01:10:48):
all the entry money that goes to CCA to take
care of all the fish up and down our coast
like they've been doing for fifty years. And the Star
Tournament gives you an opportunity to as a member. You
have to be remember first, then sign up. But if
you're a member and you're signed up, gives you an
opportunity to kind of reap the ultimate reward for having

And in the blue tag division, these people are gonna
win a transport boat, a Mercury outboard, and a coastline trailer.
They get that package, same thing. Steve Isaacs is in.
He's from Lake Jackson. Another one pending polygraph. Somebody from Georgetown.

Scopes what's, Up, David.

Speaker 8 (01:15:31):
Yeah, doug real, Quickly i'd like to add a, comment
have you you can clean up afterwards when you were
talking about having your scope mounted by someone? Else a
mistake that which is great, advice great advice because there's
so many things you can do.

Speaker 1 (01:15:45):
Wrong we're mounting.

Speaker 8 (01:15:46):
One but the issue of eye, RELIEF i can see
a common mistake being you give the scope to someone
to set it up for, you and when they set it,
up they set it up for their eye relief and not.

Speaker 1 (01:15:58):
Yours exactly WHAT i mean.

Speaker 8 (01:16:00):
By that THE i think the best way to do
that is to close your, eyes bring the scope and
rifle to your, shoulder and when you open your eye
looking through the, scope you should see a full, image.

Speaker 1 (01:16:13):
Right, yeah not a Little it's not a little straw sized,
image nor is it just kind of, blurried blurred out
at the at the. Side, yeah it just should be
a nice full image of the same size as the.

Speaker 8 (01:16:23):
Scope, Agree AND i could see that being an issue
maybe with, WELL i mean if the person that is
doing it is well, anyway you you can talk about.
It but that's if you want a gun that's gonna fitch.
You if it doesn't fitch, you you're you, know shared
at a. Disadvantage oh, Boy, YEAH.

Speaker 1 (01:16:41):
I never realized how important that. Was is Most i'm
about the average size of WHAT i. Know I'm I'm
remington's average because every every Gun i've ever bought From
remington fit me from the DAY i bought. It it
was PERFECT u A browning. SHOTGUN i had to have
a little bit of work. On some Others i've had
to have work, on but The remages stuff fits me.

(01:17:04):
Well and if it's a if a rifle scope isn't
fitted properly to your eye, relief you're either gonna end
up with a slash over your eyebrow where that scope
comes back and bites you if you don't hold onto
that rifle tight, enough or you're never really gonna see
the full image in the scope without having to move
your body on the, rifle and that's gonna take it

(01:17:26):
out of proper. Fit. Yeah we could go on and
on about this, man but you that's a great point
you bring up about eye relief when that scope's. Mounted
thank you for, that all, Right oh my. Pleasure i'm
glad to hear from, you you know. That, okay let
me move this little mouse, here by, bye there we. Go,
yeah there's and the cup. Boy if we're going to

(01:17:48):
stay on rifles in scopes for a, minute that's. Fine
one of the things THAT i will offer up as
well is that anybody who thinks it's funny to hand
someone either young or inexperienced with shooting a high caliber
rifle and let them shoot it and get rocked backwards

(01:18:11):
and maybe get a little scope gash on their forehead
or under their, eye or for any reason scare, Them
shame on. YOU i don't. CARE i don't care how
many times your cousins or your brother did that to
you when you were growing, up and you you got

(01:18:33):
scared a little, bit and that doesn't make it okay
to do it to anybody. Else That's that's one of
the things That i've, seen AND i don't see it often.
ANYMORE i THINK i think we've talked about it. Enough
it's kind of like hunting and drinking. Alcohol there's very
little of that that goes on, anymore And i'm glad for.
That and if we can just stop people from handing

(01:18:57):
young people or women or anybody else who's basically inexperienced with,
shooting handing them for their very first trigger pull an
elephant gun and shame on. Them don't do. That you're
only gonna end up alienating. Them and first they'll realize

(01:19:20):
what a jerk you are and they'll probably quit talking to,
you and they should if you're no better friend than,
that than shame on. You and, secondly you're just gonna
turn them off of the shooting sports for the rest
of their, lives and that's not good. Either there's no
reason to be scared of. Firearms the first RIFLE i

(01:19:40):
shot with not a four to. Sixteen IT'S i, mean
all the way up through those big. Calibers it's fun
to go out, there either to the range or if
you have a big game hunt that you have to prepare,
for to go tee that thing up and set off
a few. Rounds. Dogg it was taking a three seventy
five over To Africa ones and we went up To

(01:20:01):
carter's country At treshwig and shot that on the, range
and that thing when it went, off it was like
an artillery round going, off and you could see the
shock wave rustling leaves out about twenty five or thirty
yards in front of where we were. Shooting it. Was
it was. Impressive it was a very impressive, firearm believe.

(01:20:23):
Me and that's not something you put in the hands
of somebody who's. Inexperienced it's just not. So if you know, better,
good if you, don't shame on. You you've learned now
and there's no. Excuse, okay real, Quick i'm gonna Get.
Trevor If, trevor what do you, got?

Speaker 5 (01:20:41):
Man good, Morning i'm.

Speaker 1 (01:20:47):
Great what CAN i do for?

Speaker 7 (01:20:48):
You all?

Speaker 5 (01:20:49):
Right just to comment on your last, SUBJECT i mean
my FIRST i know we all had, that, buddy we'd
like to hand them to the big gun and watch
themino dot THERE i or. Whatever oh, Gun BUT i
started all MY i have four. DAUGHTERS i started them
off with the two forty. Three you know WHAT i,
Mean you're gonna go deer hunting and they all shot
a twenty two long rifle pistol to.

Speaker 1 (01:21:08):
Start, yeah that's, great that's you know something.

Speaker 5 (01:21:10):
Don't recall on either. One but my question is a
golf question and not so much about a tournament or
anything that's going.

Speaker 7 (01:21:17):
On it's a.

Speaker 5 (01:21:18):
Personal last, YEAR i broke my wrist pretty, bad and
my question is about the flexibility and. Clubs SO i
KNOW i am not going to have the strength or
the the swing speed or ANYTHING i used to have
BEFORE i broke my, wrist, right AND i haven't even
tried to swing a club, yet, Okay but my question

(01:21:38):
is is what is the difference so much between a
senior flex and like a. REGULAR i never swung a
stiff BECAUSE i didn't need, it but, yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:21:49):
A regular shaft there's extra, Extra there's like four x.
Stiff and then it comes Down. TIGER i got to
swing one Of Tiger wood's the shaft That tiger was
at the time in a in a, driver just in
a demonstration kind of a. Thing it is like a, broomstick.
MAN i mean it. Was it was that, stiff and
that's and you watch him swing and it's been and

(01:22:12):
it was. Crazy that comes down to just plain a little.
Stiff and then you got some regulars in there that
are all and there's a thousand different shafts out. There
but once you get to the senior, flex and depending
on how much swing speed you have. Left you might
even look at a lady's. Flex nobody knows it Doesn't
it doesn't say, lady and they're not pink and have
little streamers hanging off of, them so you don't have

(01:22:33):
to worry about. That but whatever flex you get is
going to allow that clubhead at the bottom of the
speed or at bottom of the, swing the clubhead's gonna
kind of whip through there a little more easily and
gain a couple of miles an hour at the bottom
basically where you want it at. Impact, yeah, yeah a little.
Bit and, call you, know call pretty much anybody and

(01:22:57):
and talk to a golf pro at an actual golf
club about, that and they'll talk to. You they'll explain
it a lot in better detail THAN i. Can but
my understanding of it is that that that little bit
of extra flex in that shaft gives you a little
bit extra oof right there at the bottom where you need.

Speaker 5 (01:23:14):
It, Okay, WELL i appreciate. THAT i gut, SAID i
don't want to give up the, game, really you. KNOW i, mean,
Yeah i'm not the guy that goes it and SAYS
i hit three hundred or anything like. That, NO i
just tried to my goal every game is to just
play with the same.

Speaker 1 (01:23:32):
Ball, yeah, oh, man that's a pretty that's a pretty lofty.
Goal you, KNOW i got.

Speaker 5 (01:23:38):
It.

Speaker 1 (01:23:39):
Jealous, yeah don't. Don't and here's the, thing don't ever worry.
WHATEVER i play with a bunch of old. Guys, guy
we're getting so. LATE i play with a bunch of
old guys On. Mondays and we've got guys who hit
from the. Blues we got guys who hit from the white,
te's we got guys who hit from the green. Tees
and we're all out there playing the same golf. Course
they the older, guys the guys who don't have the speed,

(01:24:00):
anymore they just get a chance to keep up with. Everybody.
Done don't be embarrassed about it. Either, MAN i broke my.
Wrists what do you want me to? Do i'm playing
from up. There get over, it you.

Speaker 2 (01:24:10):

kind of an overlooked part Of. Texas water fowling the
prairie get most of the, attention but the upper of
the northern ends of almost every lake we've ever dammed
up in this state flooded a ton of timber and
those ducks would get in. There so good.

Them chetos in the, backyard MOULLADSOS i called winders over.

Speaker 10 (01:30:35):
There but, Yeah, FALCONS i got one of my favorite.
MOUNTS i don't know IF i should it to you
not when you were. Here but on falcon we went
down the, falcon we shot green, wing blue, wing and
cinnamon til all in one, hunt AND i got all
three of them.

Speaker 1 (01:30:47):
Mounted so, Yeah i've got a cinnamon. STILL i held
on to. That when he was pretty he came in
with a bunch of blue, wings and, NO i don't,
REMEMBER i don't remember what the other ones. WERE i didn't.
Care it is a bluebird. Day AND i could see
that duck up in that little bunch of it was
like twenty thirty of, them and they roll around the,
spread And i'm telling my guys that stay, down stay,
down stay. Down and instead of saying, okay shoot them

(01:31:10):
and then bringing my gun, up it was like, boom take,
them and Little cinnamon rolled and drop behind. Us and
to my dog's, credit that was old bow. Man he
knew What i'd. Done he ran back there and grabbed
that cinnamon and came and put it like right next
to my leg and then took off to ketch up
with the all the all the other ducks they had knocked.
Down he was smart. Man not on one of them

(01:31:33):
saw that duck AND i just kind of wanted it
from my.

Speaker 2 (01:31:36):
Wall you.

Speaker 1 (01:31:36):

(01:31:57):
i will go ahead and get us. Reloop end of
the nine o'clock How Riceland Waterfowl Club speaking of, Ducks holy.
Caw you want to kill some ducks this? Year the
thing you need to do is GO i may have
knocked him. Off Riceland Waterfoul club out Of Eagle lake
has got. Ducks if you had a, man raise your.
Hand if you had a mediocre or worse duck hunting

(01:32:18):
year last. Year if that's the, case and it is
for a lot of people THAT i, know consider talking
To David pruitt out there by the. Way he's a world,
class world champion duck and goose, caller so he could
help you with that if you're having problems with that as.
Well he's got tons of. Water all his blinds are
at least a quarter mile, apart and he doesn't do

(01:32:39):
any guided hunting on club, land not at. All if
you're out there, hunting you're either one of the members
or somebody's, guest and that's. It and there's a very
very nice. System he has a very nice system he
has of allocating blinds from day to day and week to,
week where nobody gets preferential, treatment even if you've been

(01:33:03):
a member for one, year or if you've been a
member for twenty. Years this is his fiftieth, year by the.
Way think about. That fifty years he's been doing this
and everybody gets the same opportunity to hunt the hotspot
wherever that might be that. Week you get plenty of
land to hunt he's actually working. ON i think it's

(01:33:23):
something like another eight another thousand or so acres of
water all, together and more more. Properties he's just been
growing this thing steadily for fifty. Years you want better duck.
Hunting bottom line here it is Rice Land Waterfowl, Hunting
Ricelandwaterfowl club dot, Com Riceland Waterfowl club Dot. Com look it,

(01:33:48):
up Give david a, call take a. Tour i'm going
out there pretty. Soon i've got to get out. THERE
i haven't been, yet AND i want to see what he's.
GOT i want to see it in the. Summertime very
different look on the prairie in the. Summertime you get
a good idea what's coming. Though Ricelandwaterfowl club dot. Com
bright nine o'clock hour starts right. Now we will get
to the golf world in a, minute BUT i gotta

(01:34:08):
go back To Faux. Pro and first THING i gotta
do WHEN i get there is apologize for hanging up on.
HIM i looked. DOWN i looked, down and the little
cursor was on the drop. Over the little hand was
hanging over drop instead of. Hole it's just an old habit.
Man don't take it personally for.

Speaker 10 (01:34:25):
Us, YEAH i mean that caunterpart had a good. Laugh
said you need to teach and dug the difference between hang.

Speaker 1 (01:34:30):
Up, YEAH i saw you sent me that record for
common snook. Man that's just such a what a crazy
Paris meda. Ranch i've actually been there AND i know
where it, is and back in seventy, eight long BEFORE
i ever got, there the world record for common snoke was.
Caught it weighed about fifty three. Pounds it says about

(01:34:51):
fifty three pounds and ten. Ounces that's not how records are,
weighed BUT i think that's what the official fifty three
to ten is still. Huge the biggest One i've ever
seen was caught by a guy down In. Florida i'm
looking right at him AND i can't call his. Name
i'm so. Embarrassed good guy down there. Too i'll think
of it probably after we talk about, it but, anyway

(01:35:12):
there was a big media trip down there with the
Guy Mark, nichols who owns de Ay, lewis and this
guy worked For mark at the, time and he caught
one that was probably thirty five maybe forty. Pounds just a.
BEAST i, mean oh oh. Yeah they're they're, huge and they.
Stayed they just stay mad at the. World even when
they get that. Big they don't get, lazy they don't get.

(01:35:34):
Slow they just get bigger and meaner and. Stronger cool.

Speaker 11 (01:35:38):
Fish uh you, KNOW i bet you could kind of
like the same way redfish will eat a spinner, Bait
But i've never thought about throwing.

Speaker 1 (01:35:48):
One my most fun ever was in the indlet there
when they were stacked up during spawning. Season we actually
there was a little hump that they got on that
was pretty shallow and we were cat on top waters
and it was just, Awesome like these were ten ten
to twenty pound.

Speaker 10 (01:36:04):
Fish and top WATERS a little way to go.

Speaker 1 (01:36:07):
Home amen to. That holy, Cow. Jeff, YEAH i need
to talk to you real quick about freshwater fishing, too
BEFORE i go to this golf. TOURNAMENT i have struggled
now for two. WEEKS i have thrown pretty much. EVERYTHING
i see that the list of lures THAT i have
thrown that have been unproductive in the last three weeks probably,

(01:36:33):
includes but is not limited, to crank, baits spinner, bait swim,
baits chatter, baits top, waters and, frogs all thrown in
places where there used to be and still should be.
Bass AND i think the problem isn't What i'm throwing
or Where i'm throwing. IT i think the problem is

(01:36:54):
all this snot grass and stuff that's growing up along
the shorelines where you can't fish the first thirty feet
up and you can't put a boat in there. Either
they won't let. You, yeah And i'm not gonna throw a.
Worm don't tell me to put on a plastic. WORM
i don't do.

Speaker 7 (01:37:08):
That OH i, WAS i was leading, there BUT i,
KNOW i know you don't like. IT i know you
don't like.

Speaker 1 (01:37:12):
THAT i don't have that kind of. TIME i want to.
Move i'm shaking and moving when i'm.

Speaker 10 (01:37:18):
Fishing oh, well one, thing one thing THAT i keep
tied old all the. Time what's your water clarity?

Speaker 1 (01:37:25):
There one of the lakes is real good and the
other is. Okay one's a, foot one's three.

Speaker 7 (01:37:31):
Feet oh, okay, MAN i would. RECOMMEND i mean you have.

Speaker 1 (01:37:37):
To it ain't.

Speaker 7 (01:37:38):
Good it's not. Grass nothing is. Good it's not.

Speaker 10 (01:37:39):
Grass you don't want to throw, worms so you have
to get around. It but a quarter ounce black and
blue swim.

Speaker 1 (01:37:46):
Jig okay with a with a.

Speaker 10 (01:37:48):
Strike king full sized rage crawl on the back of. It,
yeah and it's got a lot of kick to the
stay high and basically whever you fish a spinner, bait
you can fish. That some people throw it out there
and they're like twit, twitch which took all the way.
Back but you can throw it straight out and reel
it back. In and the other, option it's that same rage.
Crawl just rig it up on A texas rigged. Hook,

(01:38:09):
yeah it's a worm, basically but you're just throwing it
out and reading the back into the sub. Surface and
there are times when they will crush that think it's
it's but it's but but it's it's a chunking wine.

Speaker 7 (01:38:19):
Deal LIKE i know you like to, do so something.

Speaker 1 (01:38:21):
Else i'm. Gonna i'm gonna try out there some Of
Mark nickels. Snakes have you ever seen those d O a?
Snakes oh, yeah oh, BUDDY i love those.

Speaker 7 (01:38:29):
Things man and a and a swimming and a and
a swimming.

Speaker 10 (01:38:32):
Sinkcoa they got a sinco that's got a swimming, foot
swimming foot on the, back. Y'all my motto makeing same.
Thing texas rigging chunking. Wine and that's what they do
In florida when.

Speaker 7 (01:38:42):
They can't catch. Fish, yeah just a swimming. Sinko that's
that's like a daily baby and and and it's and
that will come to.

Speaker 1 (01:38:48):
That if you that's What i'm.

Speaker 10 (01:38:50):
Thinking if, You, yeah when you when you rig it,
Up texas rig just make sure you bury you're not
outside the worm that where the.

Speaker 7 (01:38:57):
Other things stick it out that line.

Speaker 1 (01:38:58):
A little tag like a boat hook coming through. There
oh my, word all, right faux. Pro it's always a,
pleasure my. Friend oh, yes, sir we'll, Okay i'll see. Audios,
okay Now i'm hitting. Drop that's okay this. Time that's that's.
Appropriate this. Time let's go to The Travelers. Championship shall

(01:39:21):
we see what the leader board says? Here these guys.
Are they're making a way around the country up In,
Cromwell connecticut AT Tpc River highlands this Week Justin, Thomas,
boy how would you like to be behind these guys?
Anywhere the three guys leading this tournament are not bad
at what they. Do Justin, Thomas Scottie, Scheffler Tommy fleetwood

(01:39:45):
all at nine under par through two, Rounds Jason days at.
EIGHT i don't think he's intimidated, Really but then you
you kind of go down to the. Sevens There's denny
McCarthy And austin Deck. Wrote then the sixes there's only
two of, Them taylor And Keegan, Bradley keig And. Bradley
he can hold his home with all those guys being
three shots Behind Justin, Thomas Scottie, scheffler And Tommy. Fleetwood

(01:40:08):
though anybody who's chasing from more than more than three
probably is has an uphill. Battle Scottie, Scheffer i've been
watching him pretty. Closely i'm watching the ball. Flight i'm
watching his his just everything about his. Swing he is

(01:40:28):
so dialed in right. Now it's just, amazing absolutely. AMAZING
i don't know he we're entering an. ERA i think
Of scheffler doing a lot of What tiger. Did And
i'm not comparing him To tiger yet because to do,
that he's going to have to do what he's doing
now for another twelve to fifteen. Years but he's certainly

(01:40:51):
on the right track for. That let me, go let
me go talk To Captain mike. HERE i want to do.
That what's, Up, Mike how are you? MAN i hadn't
heard from you in a. While, well good.

Speaker 5 (01:41:00):
Morning, WELL i didn't want to disturb your golf.

Speaker 1 (01:41:02):
Talk it was very, interesting all. Right.

Speaker 5 (01:41:04):
NOW i was going to talk to you about the
three trout, limits tell you How i'm doing. It but you,
Know i've caught a lot of fish in the last four.
TRIPS i can't tell you how many twenty four and
twenty five inch Fish i've turned.

Speaker 1 (01:41:19):
Loose oh my, god that's. Good.

Speaker 5 (01:41:20):
Yeah and you, know WHEN i got, customers they want
to have a few. Fish so the three fish limit
is paying. Off it's, working that's ALL i want to,
say because when there's more bigger fish out there than
there has, been people are catching, them And i'm just
hope they're releasing them the right. Way What i'm doing
now is after we get our three fish limit and

(01:41:41):
that's enough for anybody to, eat you, know keep them
fresh because you don't want to freeze and burn. Them
What i'm, Doing i'm telling my, customers, now let's go
throw some. Lures, yeah you got, you you got your
fish to. Eat now let's go practice and let's throw some.
Lures let's see how that. Is let me try to
create you to another concept.

Speaker 1 (01:42:00):
Fishing, well you do, that you know you do, That,
Mike and you also get an opportunity to, say, okay
let's go see if we can catch a big sheep's.
Head let's go see if we can catch a big.

Speaker 5 (01:42:09):
Whatever, well you're, right there's other optacles with. Bait you
can use, sand you can catch sand, trout you can
catch keeap, heads you can catch some more red. Drum
And i'm trying to you, know trying to tell, him,
look let's use a few lures getting them. Going and
if they're not for, that WELL i just get some
strength and will go fishing, waters they go catch some.
Fish now there's already been some tag red fish. CAUGHT i, Realize,

(01:42:32):
OH i know. It and right now the leader on
A i believe it's right on a big. Sheep it
it's over nine pounds and that's a huge sheep's.

Speaker 1 (01:42:40):
Head, HEY i got SOMETHING i want you to, Try.
MIKE i saw a video the other. Day guy in
a kayak fishing down In florida around bridge. Pilings, okay
and he's he's targeting sheep's. Head and unless you've seen this,
video there's no way you would know what he's using for.
Bait you know what that.

Speaker 5 (01:42:59):
Is, yeah he's using finger. Crafts, nope he's using hot.

Speaker 1 (01:43:04):
Dogs just just throw your towel. In let me tell
you he is using black eyed peas soaked in like
sardine oil or anything to make them smell a little
fishy because they look like. Barnacles they look like. Barnacles
there you.

Speaker 5 (01:43:20):
GO i can add to that too if you really
want to catch a big sheep, head AND i. CAN
i can tell you exactly where to, go But i'm.
Not you find you, find you find a, pollen and
it's not far From, houston real close To houston and
you just take a rake and you rake the yeah
off of it and then you fish right where you

(01:43:42):
just rake them. Off now that's against the law to
do In, FLORIDA i believe IT'S i Think florida Or
North carolina it is against the law to rake. It
but you can do it In texas and that will
draw the sheep head in and you will get them
pretty good sized. Sheephead just food for. All so if
you're in The star, tournament you could also fish for gaf.

(01:44:03):
Top right, now the leading gaf tops only a little
over six. Pounds, yeah that's beatable all gaf, Top so that's. Beatable.
Uh and the lean offshore is like fifty two plus
pounds and that's beatable.

Speaker 1 (01:44:15):
Too we got to get the water to calm down.

the black tips has had their, pupps you, know they
have puff and they what they do after they have their,
Pups they turn around to eat as many as they.
CAN i hate to say that they're hungry and then

(01:44:41):
they leave out to the, gulf but the pups are
still out there feeding on whatever they. Can yesterday we
caught probably mom maybe fifteen black tip small bat black
tip pumps which we turned, loose and we also had
a limit a trout also Sweet and then every now
you bring a trout, in the mama decides to take
it away from.

we stopped to, fish and then we played a little bit,
more and then we'd fish a little bit more and
play a little bit, more and neither neither activity went as.
Planned we didn't get a single bite. Yesterday it's just

(01:52:55):
a it's a head. Scratcher these fish don't have that
far to. Go there's almost no place in this body
of water WHERE i can't cast a lure AND i
can't find a. Fish the last ONE i caught was a.

the middle of. Nowhere long, cast just random shot with

(01:53:17):
a rattle trap out in the middle of the middle
of nowhere, water nothing on the bottom out there but,
dirt AND i caught a catfish and that was. It

the lake or the bay or. Whatever it's some there's
just no excuse for accidents like, that same as there's
no excuse for hunting, accidents except in rare occasions of
gross mechanical. Failure most every boating, accident most every hunting
accident is attributable in some, way shape or form to human,

(01:56:16):

keep working on. FOREVER i do want to live long
enough to go through an entire hunting season with no.

can visualize, it because a lot of people. Can't so
we finally put some out, there spent a bunch of
money and raising price on the property a little, bit
AND i sold it in less than thirty. Days, wait
so now he agreed to put the feeders on it
if he could have them when the property, sold so

(02:01:44):
that was in the.

Speaker 1 (02:01:45):
Deal so we're up.

Speaker 5 (02:01:47):
There and loading that up and a few other. Things,
now you, KNOW i collect a lot of things in, them,
okay AND i have passion for certain things in this.
Place there's a big stack of things which you don't
see many of in a stack THAT i have an

(02:02:07):
absolute passion for from my personal. Collection so they're given.

i think probably just drooled on himself WHEN i said
That Phoenix knives been around since nineteen seventy Nine cowboys
And manski has been building custom knives since that same
time when he started that company right there in a

(02:08:31):
fairly small space at an old blacksmith shop right there
On Main street In. Belleville he has moved since then
to a much bigger space so that he can accommodate
more journeymen in their learning from, him so that he
can accommodate more customers coming in to either purchase or
order a beautiful custom knife or select from the thousand

(02:08:55):
or so knives they have right there in the in the.
Store you also can go out there To Phoenix knives
and learn how to make your own knife and actually do.
That it's not gonna be as fancy as one cowboy,
make but it'll be. Functional it'll hold an. Edge that's
a fascinating, thing, Really and if you're looking for a,

(02:09:17):
fun one of a, kind truly unique experience for the whole,
family or for some buddies or whatever it, is go
out there and build yourself a. Knife Phoenix knives Dot

calls and then two or three emails from people who
are asking me IF i can. Recommend one of them
wanted a, plumber two of them wanted ac people THAT i,
trust and then there was another. GUY i think he
was talking about needing a roof after some. Rain AND

(02:10:21):
i don't have any of those in my shows right,
now not a. One so if you know, somebody or
if you own a company like that and you want
to reach this, audience or you or they might want
to reach these audiences as of. Mine and by the,
WAY i DON'T i really shy away from deals that
only put spots in my. Shows But I'VE i assure

(02:10:45):
you If i'm endorsing somebody and you hear it somewhere
else on one of our, stations or on these two stations
That i'm ON kprc AND. Kbme it's BECAUSE i know
these people AND i trust, them And i'm gonna make
sure that they take care of ANYBODY i send to.
Them so if you want your company to be a
part of, this by all, means all you got to

you don't have to be handed off to anybody, else
which is something that a lot of people have. Said you,
Know i'd kind of like to work with, you BUT
i don't want. TO i don't want to have to
deal with somebody else to get to. YOU i, say,
No i'm. IT i have a unique ability. Here i'm
the only person in this crew who is authorized to

(02:11:31):
take care of his own. PEOPLE i don't have to
hand you off to anybody. Else there's nobody's gonna stand
in between us and say you can do, this but
you can't do. That if you need copy change real,
Quick i'll change. It if you need to add something
to subtract, Something i'll handle that for. You it's a
lot of work for, me and believe, Me i'm here
six days a WEEK i know how much work it,

(02:11:53):
is BUT i would rather do that than have people
who trust me end up having to also trust somebody
else that they don't know as. Well i'll handle it for.
YOU i am looking. FOR i need a good ac
guy and a good plumber and maybe a good roof for.
Two and they're all very valuable in this climate of,
ours as all of you. Know and the plumbing, thing

(02:12:17):
the plumbing things, universal the ac thing absolutely mandatory for
about nine and a half months of the year around.
Here same with the. Roof roof is a twelve month.
Deal their slower time is in the fall and, winter
just because it's not. Crazy but man oh, man this
time of, year if you find a little leak in your,

(02:12:38):
roof you're gonna want to get it fixed real quick
before it becomes something and before a bigger storm comes. Through,
anyway let's step away from, There. Frankie let's go back
to these summertime tips from the desk of The Texas
parks And Wildlife. Department Slash Captain, obvious you nailed number. One, hydrate, hydrate.
Hydrate what do you think number two? Is let's, see,

(02:13:03):
hmm shade when you need. It, no not yet it's
probably on here. Somewhere don't forget your. Sunscreen AND i
mentioned to you. This i'm gonna try and find this
piece THAT i read. YESTERDAY i think it was about
skin cancer rates among people who have loyally and just

(02:13:27):
entirely covered themselves in sunscreens all their lives versus those
who have not and have kind of made a habit
of not using. Sunscreens AND i don't. KNOW i think
it WOULD a lot would depend on the severity of the.
Exposures but, nonetheless IF i find, That i'll share. It
but until, then keep putting on your. Sunscreens number three

(02:13:49):
is what and it's not what you said. Before already
Already i'll rack them. Up three is dressed for, success
light colored, clothes for stays, salty keep your salt levels
up because sweat takes that out of. You maybe we'll
they get boring from, there they honestly. Do i'll take
a look at them for. Tomorrow all, Right i'm out
