Speaker 1 (00:09):
What's happening to lunch Timers's good afternoon to you, and
welcome to a Monday edition of the Matt Thomas Show
here on Sports Talk seven Hony.

Speaker 3 (00:17):
Of course, with Ross, we can't ever forget him.

Speaker 4 (00:19):
Thank you.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
Went to the barber today, got myself a shave before
tonight's game, and a nice listener came by and said, hey,
I love you and Ross together. I'm like he said,
I like you better about yourself. But Ross is fine
in addition to the squad. So no, you didn't say that.
I couldn't even sell that very hard. Hope you guys
are in a fan It's a nice track, right, It
wasn't even a good effort. That's okay. We got a

(00:43):
busy show for you today, Yes we do.

Speaker 4 (00:45):
We have.

Speaker 3 (00:47):
Of course, you're home for election coverage right here.

Speaker 1 (00:49):
No, please, I don't want to hear I don't even
want to hear that word. What is Why am I
getting forty five texts a day? I didn't even get
that four years ago. I'm getting most of them from
my mom. My mom was I don't know how I
got all these texts for my mother. Why is she texting?
She wants you to vote? It's from politicians to my
mother to my phone. Oh, I say. And then fifteen

(01:12):
times a week I got people calling me about my
dad's house asking if I want to sell. I'm like,
that's not me. Can I tell you something I put
a new feature on my phone, not new, but something
I put in a couple of months ago that if
I if my caller ideed is not recognized the person,
it goes to voicemail immediately. Now, sometimes it does hurt
you because you have strange callers trying to call, you know,
legitimate in the media business, I feel like you're going

(01:33):
to get more strange people more times than not. Those
people will leave a voice message and say, hey, this
is John from Jones Construction or something. We're going to
call you back on something or my doctor's office. But
the rest of the.

Speaker 3 (01:44):
Time it's mostly spam and I don't have to hear
any of it.

Speaker 1 (01:46):
It makes me feel what if justin Verland is trying
to call you to say I want to go on
the show, and then you send it straight to voicemail. Now,
that's never going to happen. Be Ben Vernier call my
phone twenty five times. Absolutely, but not justin Hey man,
hey bro, can I get back on your radio station?
I was I was hoping to try to get back on.
I know, I know that my brother doesn't come out
and has never come on your show once. But you know,

(02:07):
I'd love to come on your show and talks to baseball.
I can get you on my flipping bats pod. Yeah, Bro,
everybody's got pods.

Speaker 4 (02:17):
Of time.

Speaker 1 (02:17):
If you don't have a pod, either too lazy to
do radio or not talented. Hey, come on, I'm just
telling you the truth. We got to build up a
career somehow.

Speaker 4 (02:24):
Matt.

Speaker 3 (02:25):
Yeah, how's it going.

Speaker 1 (02:26):
I'm trying now. You're doing fine. You on a real
radio station. You are as legiti media as it gets,
although you don't dress it. But that's a diferent issue
for a different time. I'm not going. I'm not going
to the game today. That's right, you're not. If I
did in this, I'm wearing my eighth style blue shirt.

Speaker 4 (02:40):
I like it.

Speaker 1 (02:41):
I like it is our is our Rockets insider connorm
government going on the game that I don't know? All right,
I'm gonna I'll go on Wednesday. I'm not going today.
You don't want to go see the New York Knickerbockers song, No,
I'm gonna I do. Actually, I mean that's appealing, but
I'm gonna stay home so I can watch Monday night
football and the Rockets and then do Rockets posting. Oh
you're gonna do both, and the launch pad that I
at six thirty. Yes, it will be a nightcap six

(03:03):
to six thirty. Then we'll switch into launch pad mode
and then coming up after that it's Rockets Radio Network.
I would essentially suggest all of you just start listening
at seven forty five and Matt Thomas on the call
coming up at seven forty five, Well, what a Saturday
night we have. You don't know this because you don't
listen to the pregame shows, not that you would, because
you're a busy arena. Every show I say, Matt Thomas

(03:23):
is gonna do a great job on the call coming
up at seven forty five, or whenever you want a
hug right now? Is that what you want? I'm just
letting you know. I thank you.

Speaker 3 (03:29):
It's nicy to say that I do listen to the
postgame show that are night.

Speaker 1 (03:32):
Oh you you were the one. Well, I mean I
got one caller, I didn't. I didn't notice you had one.
It was a good game, Troy and Numble. I love you.

Speaker 3 (03:40):
Yeah, and Troy's a regular. That's good, that's great.

Speaker 1 (03:43):
Yeah. I would assume that when you down thirty one,
it's gonna probably lose a little bit of a US audience.
That was almost history. That was fun. That was the
most fun six point loss I've ever seen in my life. Yeah.
I I was thinking about how fast I can get
out of the arena as soon as the game was
over with, Like do I have to say goodbye? I
was thinking about that, Like how fast is my post

(04:05):
game show going to be if they lose by forty?
Yeah Warriors, Yeah it was. It was exactly twenty four minutes,
as you're possibly gona find, and then it was really
awesome for twenty four. Then the postgame versus of the
overtime was not very good, as the Rockets ran out
of steam. And it was interesting that the guys that
were out there didn't involve Well, one guy was out
there that was the second highest paid guy, and then

(04:26):
the highest paid guy wasn't really out there at all.
So I tell you. You may don't look at the paychecks.
He does not. He does not who's performing And yes,
Albrin Shongoon is who Matt's talking about. He hasn't been
in the clo. He wasn't inn a closing line up
against the average either. Yeah, he is averaging I want
to say, minuscule fourth quarter points this year, not because
he can't make shots at the fourth quarter, which just

(04:46):
a lot of times lately he's not been out there.
And did you hear after the game emy Adoka talking
about him playing himself into shape. There was a comment
about that. And see, to me, he looked a little
leaner coming into this season. I don't think he would
have gained all of a sudden ten pounds in the
last couple of days later because he wouldn't hit the weights.
That's true, That's true. All right, nixter In tonight, we'll

(05:08):
have it for you here on seven on eight. Our
coverage will begin really right about now six o'clock. Okay, now, yeah,
you're yeah. Then six o'clock will be for the launch
pat over the nightcap, which would be probably just regard
shitted topics of really Fritz twice Actually, yeah, will he's
gonna join us, and WILLI was not supposed to join
us today. It was here on a Monday, because when
you beat the number seventeen team in the country, you

(05:29):
should have a little bit of a bunch of flowers.
Oh okay, well, a great win, we can give him
the flowers. What a strange night for college football in
our town. So you've ain't just playing Kansas State at
the exact same time that Navy Rice is supposed to
be playing. Yes, our game was delayed just shy of
an hour. I think we kicked off at three thirty

(05:52):
two something like that. We're we're supposed to start a
kickof at two forty. Okay. The Navy Rice game was
having the same weather issues too, but they were getting
delayed and delayed and delayed. They'd play for a will
and then at delayed again, they would play for a
wile and at de layed again. I think they finished
their game at ten o'clock at night. I'm not kidding
you now, right, and Rice did pull off a huge
upset beating over a top twenty team in Navy.

Speaker 3 (06:13):
Good for them, But damn, I didn't.

Speaker 1 (06:16):
Realize the weather would be so crazy for two facilities
that were about seven miles apart, and it didn't come
with a cold front. Now it's still hot. Yeah, that
seems that's the worst part. The kids.

Speaker 4 (06:27):
It's good.

Speaker 3 (06:28):
We're in November. It's still in the mid eighties.

Speaker 1 (06:31):
You know, I'm never going to plain about it. You're not.
I am. I'm getting a little cold snap. We're gonna
go to Detroit this weekend, so okay, we should be
on the road. But I want some I want some
Crispy Air. Crisp Air. Excuse me, you want some Crispy Air. Yeah,
it sounds delicious. Yeah deep fried. That sounds a little weird,
all right. Uh seven one three two one two five
seven nine if you want to join us today on
the radio program seven one three two one two five

(06:53):
seven nine zero. I think Ross and I we did
not speak to each other yesterday because we try to
block each other phones on Sunday. We's talking of during
the week. But I'm assuming that you do what I did,
and you watched several hours of Red Zone. I mean,
I think I put it on at twelve thirty and
I don't think I turned it off until got to
be about six fifteen, when they told me I had
to turn it off because the game there's only one

(07:13):
game left. I sat on the couch for red zone.
At eleven fifty nine. I did not move from the couch. Well,
I got I made a sandwich about two thirty and
that was it. I did not move from the couch
till about six forty five, till what was the last one.
It was past Seahawks and Rams and when on one
game left, they have to they have to let you go.

Speaker 3 (07:32):
You have to go turn on your regular five today.

Speaker 1 (07:34):
So the conclusion of Seahawks Rams, yeah, which went into overtime. Yeah,
it was great with that. And again I don't have
a dog in the final. So I don't have an
NFL team, But I when you really don't have a
dog in a fight, when you're not watching a local team,
you could just sit there and just first fall stir
at your fantasy team for hours on end. Yes, all
five of them I was checking. Yeah. Secondly, you don't

(07:56):
have many emotions with any of them. You just hope
for good games. Yeah, you could say there and watch
Ta Kwan Barkley go out there to pull off two
spin moves and a backwards hurdle hurt. Yeah. I've never
seen that.

Speaker 3 (08:08):
Edwin Moses was jealous of that move.

Speaker 1 (08:09):
That's how good that was. Insane it was, Uh, it
was a it was a baletic yeah, I mean, and
there was a couple of games that in the NFL
yesterday where you had tight ends and running backs jumping
over people that said, you know what as compared to
trying to go head to head leap over them and
then exactly what they did. It was fun. So we
will get into anything NFL related you'd like to on

(08:32):
the radio on the show seven one three Center again.
Willie Fritz is going to join us at one thirty today.
Dimiko is gonna speak to the media today at two o'clock,
So we'll let you hear that and see what he
had to say about how the boys spent not the
off weekend, but they had played their game obviously Thursday. Uh,
Lions coming in to Sunday's game Sunday Nights game, by

(08:53):
the way, as a five point favorite. It's in five
inside NRG Stadium. Wow, I watched as you did. When
when you have the three clock games, there are less
games to flip around to Scott Hanson as the filibuster
more well, actually you know it doesn't talk as much.
They just go from game to game. There's fewer games

(09:13):
when they when they all go to commercial and stuff. Yeah,
he's got to talk. The Trump is gonna I don't
want to say this because it's still a long long
way to go, but goat feeling. Save it for tomorrow.
No initial reaction is Detroit's going to not only win
the NFC, but when it rather comfortably there is another
team offensively, I'm not I'm not even clown accounting Sam

(09:37):
Darnold and the Vikings so yesterday were atrocious for the
first half against the Colts kind of defense though. If
Detroit ever ran into a defense that really could kabash
their offense, they'd be in trouble. But Detroit, even on
a slick, bad weather day golf and the running backs
receivers the time. I mean, they're just they're the best
team in the NFL. They are right now, at least

(09:58):
on the NFC side, I would agree, and I would
say that the toughest defense is they could run into
are most of them are on the AFC side, like
the Broncos, Chargers, Steelers, Chiefs have a great defense.

Speaker 4 (10:09):
Yep.

Speaker 1 (10:09):
Like most of those teams are you're not going to
run into on that side. I don't even know who
has the best defense in the NFC. Maybe the ninth
But hell, I was watching Jacksonville Philadelphia yesterday and the
Jaguars were Philadelphia. It's a boneheaded mistakes and they were
allowed to get back in the game. Yeah, they tried
to give that way game away. I wasn't overly in
president of Minnesota at all yesterday. You have Justin Jefferson

(10:32):
and you are can't put up a single point in
the first half. Well, he had like one hundred yards
of the place literally unstoppable, and yet they didn't cross
the end zone. It's crazy on that. So Detroit it's
gonna be a problem on Sunday. Yes, they get Jamison
Williams back to I believe from his two game suspension. Yep.

(10:53):
And then you got to Dallas after that. Now what
Dallas team you're getting. Is it going to be Cooper
Rush a quarterback, or is it going to be Dak Prescott.
He left the game yesterday for Dallas against Atlanta with
a hamstring injury. So we'll see exactly how serious it is.
We'll get that further up down and that tomorrow during
the NFL uh rewind with Ross, which would be at

(11:13):
one thirty. Of course, that's what I'm got. What else
college football this weekend, Aggie's m What happened probably is
trying to count that count the days of the SEC
championship game pre too free, too little, or booking their
flights to Atlanta. What happened? Okay, they may have to
they may be going to Atlanta, but be changing planes.

(11:34):
We'll be staying there. Okay, Well so they're still alive, right,
Oh yeah, I gotta be. I mean, when you have
sixteen teams, you feel like, oh my god, it's a mess.
The tie breakers are gonna get pretty like how many?
I mean, if you're a conference, like a Big twelve
of the Big of the SEC, or the Big ten
for the matter, and you don't have these divisions, you mess.
You've got to have massive amounts of tie breakers. That's
what they do. We talked about them. I'd have to

(11:56):
bring them back up. Of course we know Chris Gordy
knows every one of them. But it gets weird, It
gets real weird down the tiebreaker, like I would assume
the fifth or sixth tiebreaker is probably something so ridiculous,
You never would have even thought of it until you
came up, until you read it. Yeah, it's it's something. Yeah,
read the The last straw is random draw of tied teams.

Speaker 3 (12:17):
That's tiebreaker. Oh random draw huh huh okay uh?

Speaker 1 (12:20):
Tiebreaker E is cap relative total scoring margin versus all
conference opponents among the Tide teams. What did you just say? Exactly? Yikes?
All right, Texas fans? Have you been licking your wounds
off of the You know I wasn't on with you
Friday because I was up in college station at the
ring ceremony. How'd that go? By the fun?

Speaker 3 (12:42):
It was really quick and easy.

Speaker 1 (12:43):
A m shout out to you, very organized, really easy
to be a school sponsored. Oh yeah, the dunking no no, no,
no no, the dunking is not getting the The getting
the ring is okay. And by the way, so we
bought painting a picture and those you to know what
it is. We got him a good sized pitcher and
he drank sweet tea because he's not and he doesn't

(13:04):
like He doesn't go to diabetic shock after that.

Speaker 3 (13:06):
It doesn't like alcohol.

Speaker 1 (13:08):
But we were talking about the ring dunk and I
had never seen it in firsthand in my life because
I have no aggies in my family except obviously my son. Now,
and apparently you're supposed to drink the in a one
in one gulp. Yes, chug the beer. Chug the beer,
and they time it and they time it. And then
the most common thing that happens as soon as it
after it's done, after you grab your ring out of
your beer, is you vomit. The vomit factor is about

(13:31):
eighty five ninety percent cause you're not supposed drink that
much beer in that short period of time. Correct, So
he but he he finished off that team. Now he
did take unsweet team. We put a bunch of spun
in it because the son, I'm not pepping you put
cane sugar in this tea and having you knocked that
whole thing back, you're being a coma. But we had
a good time. And uh, he's is you know that
you put the ring on and then on one side

(13:52):
and then when you graduate, you flip it the other side.
It's correct. I didn't see these things. I didn't know. Yeah,
they're they're really into their rings. Well let me take
something for and I love University Houston. As you know,
we don't have any traditions. We just don't. I'm sorry,
we don't. And so if you think I'm going to
criticize schools traditions, you're gonna other thing coming.

Speaker 5 (14:13):
Now.

Speaker 1 (14:14):
The ring one's fine. They got some weird ones though.
Now I did tell him, I said in and his
brother was with us yesterday. I did say this. The
yell latter bit is ridiculous and it always will be.
They're stupid, they're dumb, and it makes no sense. And
he didn't want to hear any of that either. Okay,
but that's the right. But I was right. Everything else
about A and M I completely embrace, except that they're

(14:35):
just bearing the dead dogs near the stadium.

Speaker 3 (14:37):
I'm okay with that too. I really am bizarre.

Speaker 1 (14:39):
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety seven
one three two one two five seven nine zero. To
Tell the Truth is coming up today at one point twenty.
We'll have Willie Fritz at one thirty and the press
conference with Demko Ryans at two o'clock. Seven one three,
two one two five seven. Onety I want to take

Speaker 6 (16:03):
Matt Thomas now on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 1 (16:17):
All right, twelve twenty two Sports Talk seven ninety, Happy
opening day of college basketball. There's like nine hundred thousand
games on today, a bunch of them starting like right now.
That's great. So if anybody's looking for a UT Dallas
U T Arlington score, be happy to pass that along
to the audience here. Cougar basketball starts tonight against C Dallas. Oh,
excuse me, MT Dallas. Cougar basketball starts tonight against sick

(16:42):
In State. That's fine, a little cupcake to start the season. Yeah,
I'll tell you who's got a tough schedule is A
and M. They open up at UCF Big twelve and
then they've got i mean probably at least five top
forty teams in air non conference. Okay, how Sex is
a non conference basketball going tonight? They open up their
season playing at well, I don't know if it's at

(17:03):
because you never know. It's in Las Vegas. Actually, where
is it. It's in Las Vegas. Ohio State, that's not bad. Yeah,
you think Craig ways at the casino or do you
think he is mixing stuffs programs playing Jackson State one,
stepping up the Big Boys.

Speaker 3 (17:17):
Five, shut your momass up?

Speaker 1 (17:19):
And then Texas plays Houston Christian Okay, that's gonna be
a forty point game, Chicago State fifty point game, Mississippi
Valley State fifty and then Syracuse Okay, it's a good balance.
You can't you can't have one juggernaut for the other.
They also played in c State and Yukon in the
non conference. Good y'all for you Els, El's and El's

(17:40):
and bore Els just landed a four star recruit last week.
So whatever, I'm ready. I'm ready to be heard again
by Texas basketball. I mean, it can't wait. It's always
there for you. Yes, it's it's that yearly bitter pill.
You have to swallow Texas and Ohio State nine o'clock
on T and T tonight, and it's gonna be on
one of our stations right camp here. No, it's got
to be in the fam somewhere somewhere because we don't

(18:02):
start till seven to forty five tonight. So it can't
be here. H Cougar's play at seven, can't be on keeping.
Maybe it's on the maybe Sonny Dana Tyson, I believe
on the call. I believe it's on ninety three seven
the beat hard body, Kiati on the car body, Katty,
that's funny. Seven one three two one two five seven
Dotty seven one three two one two five seven And congratulations.
A little baseball here early on. And we're gonna mix

(18:23):
in all the different sports. But Alex Bredman grabbing himself
in a gold glove yesterday. Yes, go ahead. And then
I see a story today out of SI that says
the following, And I'm gonna go ahead and show you that,
give you the headline.

Speaker 3 (18:40):
I'll let you go from there.

Speaker 1 (18:42):
Uh. Houston Astro's top prospect not seen as an answer
for a third Blase replacement. Mm that be Zach Dezenzo. Nope,
Bryce Matthews, Oh, Bryce Matthew. They're saying he needs at
least they being any but the scouts that have been
talking to this dude at SI says he needs at
least a half season a beat of hitting and probably
be a full season of fielding before he was to

(19:02):
inherit the spot. Mmm mmm, I guess tomorrow starts for agency, right,
I think so true? Free agency. And as you mentioned
pre show, which I didn't know, are you Henny out
Suarez deal? Yeap gonna stand backs have opted into his deal. Yeah,

(19:23):
so he's not available, right. He was top two on
the market with alongside yon Mankata. Yeah. Man, And then
you're getting into like Paul the Young and Geo or
shell a territory. I wish I wish we were on
Space City right now because you could see your nose.

Speaker 3 (19:43):
You're just like scrunching it up in the worst possible way.

Speaker 1 (19:46):
Sign Bragman, please, I mean you could try to talk
it into existence if you want to. I'll take the
hell's an L two the approach. He's like, there's no
doubt in my mind they're gonna sign Alex Bregman. There's
no there's a little doubt. Nope, No, he's he's signing here. No,

(20:08):
they're gonna they're gonna spend. Let's all take the L
two bay approach. There's no doubt in my mind they're
going to sign Alex Bregman. Well, let's not to cross
over to politics here, but oh boy, if you ask
the Democratic nominee she thinks she's winning tomorrow. Think you
as to get some doubt if you ask for Republican
candidate he thinks he's winning tomorrow. I think they probably
both have doubts. Yeah, but publicly they probably privately, I'm

(20:30):
sure they privately. Yeah, I'm talking about Hell's out to Okay. Yeah,
I mean there's that was my analogy and it worked.
I got Okay, it worked, it worked, it worked. You're
doing great, Okay, let's try it. Seven one three two
one two five seven ninety seven one three two one
two five seventy. So how did everybody spend their weekend?
Did you immerse yourself with college football?

Speaker 4 (20:50):
Yes?

Speaker 1 (20:50):
Did you partake in the NFL stuff? Did you say
you know what? No Texas are playing? I'm good, I'm
sure some people did. I'm I'm always curious. And we
used to now David Barron used to write for the
Chronicle and he would give us the ratings on They
don't have a TV radio reporter anymore, so we don't
know how the ratings are for. But I'm curious how
the in the Minnesota game looked yesterday Detroit Green Bay.

Speaker 3 (21:13):
If if it resonated in Houston.

Speaker 1 (21:15):
Oh, I'm sure it was Gangbusters ratings Matt for Colts
vikings in Houston. You're probably right, which, by the way,
the Colts benching Anthony Richardson and then scoring what six
offensive points? Yes, so I guess it could have been
worse with Anthony Richardson. At least he wouldn't turn the
ball over a bunch. Joe Flacco, although he was the

(21:37):
last one on the off the field at halftime, make
sure he was high five minutes, teammates going to the
locker room.

Speaker 3 (21:41):
Yeah, that's good team player, team guy.

Speaker 7 (21:44):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (21:44):
Not a good quarterback. Not a good quarterback.

Speaker 3 (21:46):
I mentioned this on Twitter yesterday.

Speaker 1 (21:48):
The Texans are going to win multiple AFC South Championships
in the upcoming future because these quarterbacks in his conference
and this division are absolutely horrendous. Yes, there's really no

Welcome back to the Matt Thomas Show with Ross Osbyria

(24:00):
with you Matt Thomas of course as well the end
of the hour Willie Fritz coming up in an hour. Yeah,
to tell the truth at one twenty. Okay, I love
to tell the truth because I love it when you
get mad at me and you get mad at Connor
and it becomes an uncomfortable time. Your shakes are bad.
Now you hit the was that on to tell the
truth or was that I can't even remember what it
was when you said, uh, Dodgers in five and I

(24:22):
was like, that was ridiculous. It's a good feeling.

Speaker 4 (24:25):
I think it's well.

Speaker 1 (24:26):
I can't remember nothing better than having a coworker who've
worked with for a long period of time. And I'll
name and will not name this person. Okay. She came
up to me. I was going to the bathroom her
during the break and she's like, man, you sound great
inside the arena.

Speaker 3 (24:38):
I'm like, I haven't been that in four years.

Speaker 1 (24:41):
But thanks. She didn't know what to say after that.
She goes, well, you look good. At least that's good.
That's actually great recovery by her.

Speaker 4 (24:50):
She had to.

Speaker 3 (24:51):
She came up with that lie really quick.

Speaker 1 (24:54):
Yeah, I'm sorry, that's fine. Hill checks so clear. You're
doing great, Matt. You're doing a good job. The reality.
The reality is when if they can win some more,
I'll be on highlights more and people actually recognize any
more for doing it. You make more up roarious and

(25:17):
energetic calls as if the team is winning and being
in close games. Yeah, but you know, still people trying
to segue into the Matt not doing PA anymore, doing
the full time radio and and this is my fourth
year of feeling full time ready, but that's not there. There. Yes,
we'll talk for some people. Let's talk to a Max
in Pairland on seven ninety and twelve thirty six. Max,

(25:38):
Good afternoon, gentlemen.

Speaker 4 (25:41):
Hello.

Speaker 8 (25:42):
Minnesota was cut above Indianapolis last night. Their defense didn't
give Flacco time to get much going, and sam Donold
bless Us Hart made some nice plays and one particularly
ugly interception. So all right, the basketball games Saturday night,
the Rockets, I forgot they were on because I was

(26:03):
so enjoying South Carolina's rally in the second half. I
saw some trolling yesterday about some people not playing too
much and the coach should be fired because he wasn't
letting Green do this and that and the other.

Speaker 1 (26:20):
And what happened, Well, it wasn't Green, it was well,
he didn't play a whole lot.

Speaker 3 (26:25):
I mean, I mean, he's still in the thirties.

Speaker 1 (26:27):
But Alprin Shingou did not play very much in the
second half of the game on Saturday night, and Albie
has gotten some truthers out there on the Twitter streets
that think he can do no wrong, and they were
not pleased with the fact that he was not out
there during the key moments of the fourth quarter and
in the overtime session.

Speaker 8 (26:47):
So he was enjoying, shall we say, a learning experience.

Speaker 1 (26:51):
Well that's I mean. The reality is, and this has
been e mas amos since he's gotten here, is that
if I got guys that are giving me the full
effort one hundred percent and helped me with a comeback.
I remember they were down thirty one to eventually take
the lead by one point.

Speaker 3 (27:05):
In the game, I'm gonna ride. I'm gonna ride with
those guys.

Speaker 1 (27:08):
And so he doesn't look at contracts, he doesn't look
at how famous a particular player is or how big
his fan base is. He's going with the guys that
you know, that help him. He thinks win games, and
he thought the tarre East in combination and Jabari Smith
being out there a lot of minutes and a little
bit of Aaron Holliday laid down the stretch was what
helped the Rockets. Okay, I'd like to see us get better.

Speaker 8 (27:28):
Hey, did Smith play any center or was Davis out
for the the comeback.

Speaker 1 (27:38):
Uh, what Davis.

Speaker 9 (27:41):
Steven, Stephen Davis Steven was.

Speaker 1 (27:47):
Not active Steven, he was inactive for the game, and
he's questionable for tonight. He's still recovering from it. He's
gonna be questionable the whole season. Yeah, basically I'm questionable
the entire season too. Thanks Max to the phone call.
We appreciate you listening. Seven one three two one two
five seven ninety seven one three two one two five seven.
They got a tweet in Ross and I thought, we're
just going to ask you directly. This is okay, I responded,

(28:09):
but go ahead, Oh did you okay? Question was hey
sports Tim, Tim looking through UT's basketball schedule to find
the U of H game. Nothing. Maybe UT just didn't
have a scheduling availability, Maybe it was a money issue.
Looking for plausible reasons here, and Uh, your response was
only playing teams with championship winning history like Yukon, Syracuse,
n C State, Ohio State. So unfortunately, UH didn't make

(28:31):
the cut. And then Scott comes in and says, ah, yes,
perennial title contender Arkansas Pine Bluff, there's no room in
the schedule for you of H and four.

Speaker 3 (28:39):
Y'all playing Arkansas Pine Bluff seriously?

Speaker 1 (28:42):
Uh yeah, Jesus, Okay, don't make me you want me
to go. You're you're starting Your team is starting their
season with Jackson State. We're playing Auburn this weekend, the
two K under A Championship down to the tote sent
just mentioned Texas is playing. Yeah, it's a mix. Everybody
does a mix. What's the problem mister Jackson stayed over here?

(29:03):
Don't make me run through the list. I'm pulling it up. Oh,
Louisiana raging Cagun's after that, gould Hofstra very academically inclined. Okay,
then Alabama, Notre Dame and Butler's not good anymore. But
that's fine to Troy, Toledo and Texas A and m
Corpus Christie. You can go beat up on the islanders.

(29:24):
That's not right. Leave those Leave those good folks's in
Corpus Christie alone. It's bad enough they have to live
in Corpus Christy. You have only been a Corpus Christie
one time in my life. It's actually nice. I'm fifty
two and I've been there one time. And I know
this is gonna sound crazy to a lot of you
here Estonians. You can see your feet in the water there.
Oh my god, what is wrong with you? Why a saying?

(29:51):
Why life is actually clear? Why are we going to
Corpus CHRISTI? More often? I love Corpus CHRISTI. I think
it's great. They have a little downtown strip. I can't
remember what it's called. But their campus looks beautiful. They
or something. There's Mustang Island is over there, Port of Ransas.
It's nice area. And again you can actually is not
really corporate CHRISTI. It's in the area though, right, But
you can actually see your feet in the water. You

(30:14):
can go see the Salina statue. I mean you can
that last about a minute. You can go to a
hooks game. I want to go to hooks outdoor baseball
in the summertime. I think is the original Waterburger? I
don't think it's still up, but is it? But that
if you're trying to sell the original, not a rurger,
that's not a selling point money here, don't they Not
in our station? That's fine, but in the company.

Speaker 3 (30:34):
Let's talk to Roger northwest side of twelve forty one High.

Speaker 10 (30:37):
Roger good after in that nice disgussion about the about
the easton sports seed.

Speaker 9 (30:44):
But I just want to do one thing in Froniger
and talk about these Rockets.

Speaker 10 (30:47):
I just don't see how Udoka's rosies working with you know,
I know.

Speaker 9 (30:52):
You want to put the guys and give the most
effort money time, and that's cool and everything.

Speaker 10 (30:56):
Well, how can he's playing red back feats you with
all these games that he's horrible shoot a percentage.

Speaker 9 (31:03):
I just don't see it. I just don't first of all,
that that kind of using percentage is not gonna last.

Speaker 10 (31:09):
The season, will be injured or something, or something will
give out.

Speaker 9 (31:13):
There's no way. First of all, you did draft. You
did draft Reach Shepherd, not the third round. He's drafting
that the third pick of the draft.

Speaker 10 (31:21):
Overall, you're gonna have to use the guy and you're
gonna have to give him some minutes. So I'm not
seeing where that philosophy is, you know, working out as
whether he's just like I don't want to plan, he's
not giving it in practice. No, But I asked you
because you're the guy with the ear of the street rock. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (31:38):
Yeah, that's a great conversation. Thank you Roger for the phone.
It sounds like you a little thundershower on the background
or you're calling us in the shower, which is is
it rainy? It's been Uh, you know, I reached Shepherd
and a men Thompson and a man was out there
a bunch. He just had to play the combo gar
and he was in there because Joleen Green was struggling.
I mean, you can't put the argument is just read Shepherd. Ultimately,

(32:01):
could he be good enough to be run the point
for this basketball team? Yeah, but it's season game number
six of his NBA career, and right now he just
looks like he's just going, not through the motions, but
just watching and looking and going, oh my god, this
game is big. That's the feel I get too. It's
like he's kind of watching the games more than participating,
and he needs to be more aggressive. I think his

(32:23):
I think the game's moving a little fast for him.
If you remember, men Thompson went to the G League
for a little bit. But when he started, did did
Bari simth Junior do it too? I Green started cat
cam whitmore so. I mean they they didn't give reed Shepherd.
They put him right into the fire and put him
in the rotation and he got fifteen plus minutes the

(32:44):
first couple of games. But then Coachi Dooka said, you
know what, I'm not seeing the impact I want to see.
So he's throttled his minutes a bit. Yeah, and it's
not like Shephard has been great out there and and
he made Oaks holding him back. You do want to
give him some experience and some seasoning. But coach dook
is trying to win game. But I do believe there
was a thought of Reid could come in here, maybe
not in the first ten games, but by you know,

(33:05):
mid season whatever and be a rotation guy. And I
think that the plan is we in the number three
pick in the draft and a guy that was brought
in to be a pure shooter, to have a guy
like that either come off the bench I'm presuming off
the bench just Fred's gonna start, but to be that
kind of instance, score perimeter guy that on nights where
maybe Fred can't shoot, and Fred has not, to his
own accepting acknowledgement, has not shut the ball well at

(33:27):
all any point this season, and he's gonna get better.
And yeah, if we're talking about game forty one, midway
of the season and Reid Shepherd's still playing three five
minutes a night. Then, yeah, he's riding on the bench.
He needs to be in the G League or something. Yeah,
early on. Game's moving fast for him, clearly a little
deer in headlights to me and and he'll get better. Yeah,
I think right now the game is just moving in

(33:47):
at breakneck speed. Seven one three, two, one two five
seven ninety seven one three, two, one two five seven ninety.
We'll hear from Willie Fritz at one thirty to tell
the Truth one twenty and Demko today at two o'clock
with the press conference Believe it or not. Today, Rest
in peace to the greatest move music producer in the
history of music, Quincy Jones, passing away at the age

(34:08):
of ninety one, twelve forty four. Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 2 (34:11):
The Matt Thomas Show, Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 1 (34:19):
Home of the Strows. Last one, that's two and I
think that's probably about right.

Speaker 3 (34:38):
All right, go ahead, what do you got unless we
were doing this.

Speaker 1 (34:40):
On the ticket at Adam Schefter. Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott
is expected to miss quote several weeks end quote with
a hamstring injury. Per source. He is seeking a second
opinion to confirm treatment options whoa. That means Cooper Rush

(35:02):
c J. Stroud Monday night football? Bump bump bump bum.
How they're gonna sell that one. They're gonna put it
on ESPN. Plus I have to watch the Manning cast
on that one. Oh, come on, Cooper, you know there's
a Rockets game at night too. Oh there is, so
you'll Yeah, you're gonna be overseas anyway. What are you
worried about?

Speaker 11 (35:20):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (35:20):
By then? Yeah, you're right. No, No, that's the eleventh.
I won't be gone yet. Oh yeah, you're right. No,
you're gonna be gone. I'm thinking this Thursday night bits
thrown me out? How do I know your schedule better
than you can do your own schedule? That's what I'm
my flight? Yeah, I will be I won't be catching
that one. You cannot miss your flight. I won't. But
I'm saying you really can't miss your flight. Oh I know,

(35:43):
and hopefully it don't get any bad weather. Why are
you looking like that? And what if wrong? You're You're
an awful human being? What is wrong with you? I'm
aready gonna be on a sixteen hour flight. You'll be fine? Okay, Yeah,
we have to have it gonna do a segment before
you leave, because this your your hair all this weekend,
all next week. Right, Yeah, we're.

Speaker 3 (36:05):
Gonna have to do How does ross kill sixteen hours?

Speaker 1 (36:08):
What's easy? I'll sleep for half of it and read
a book and watch a movie. Done.

Speaker 3 (36:13):
Are you sure you can sleep for half of it?

Speaker 4 (36:16):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (36:17):
Man, Kevin plus baby, I got room. Oh look at you,
big spender. Good for you. Happy you're spending a serious
cash like that. You got a hook up?

Speaker 4 (36:27):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (36:27):
Somebody I know got status? What's that right?

Speaker 4 (36:30):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (36:31):
You can fly with me, but I'm not going with you.
Yeah I know.

Speaker 3 (36:34):
I I'll let you be my status bitch if you
want to.

Speaker 1 (36:36):
Sometimes someday I would love to seven one three two
one two five seven maybe called the I'll be your
status bitch. Sometimes feels like a clip.

Speaker 3 (36:44):
Let's talk to Frank in the north Side on seven
hunty High.

Speaker 1 (36:46):
Frank, Hey hasn't done on that good?

Speaker 4 (36:49):
Oh?

Speaker 12 (36:50):
Say my my thing with the rockets. If if we
don't get the five out of six c I'm ready
to get rid of the coach because he had the
same That's why they got rid of them in Boston.
He couldn't pick the lineup. He always kept juggling the lineup,
taking the wrong people out at the wrong time. And

(37:12):
that's the issue we have in here.

Speaker 1 (37:14):
That's that's why he got let go in Boston. That's
not the hold hold of Frank.

Speaker 4 (37:22):
Frank.

Speaker 1 (37:22):
He was the coach of the Celtics for one season
and they won the Eastern Conference championship.

Speaker 12 (37:27):
But that team was already put together when he got
that job.

Speaker 3 (37:30):
Okay, but that's that's not the reason. That's not the
reason why he got.

Speaker 1 (37:34):
Like that's.

Speaker 12 (37:36):
Where this we got kids listen anyway, But anyway is
why we uh giving Fred van Fleet this pass? I mean,
you know he ain't shooting.

Speaker 1 (37:52):
He in a slump. What what did I just say
in the previous segment. I said, he's he's shooting terribly.

Speaker 12 (37:59):
We should be starting Amir Thompson in his spight bring.
We got to do him like we did Sam Kassel
in Kennisville one in four or you know how how
really did them. That's what I'm looking at him because
every time we get to get a good team, they
always posting him up. And his defense he can't guard

(38:22):
nobody at sixty three or six vote he he don't guard.
His defense ain't worth the crap, So we got to
put somebody in there. And there's no way in where
you're gonna tell me, Amir Thompson.

Speaker 1 (38:37):
It's not a mirror.

Speaker 3 (38:39):
But that's that's her there, so it's fine.

Speaker 12 (38:42):
And he then we draft him as a point guard.

Speaker 1 (38:46):
The Rockets drafted him as anything. He can do a
bunch of different things. Card he's played the four, the three,
the two in the one so far as the Houston Rocket,
and he's been playing more point than anything else, for sure, that's.

Speaker 12 (38:59):
What I'm saying. Well, and then we're gonna have a
if we don't make a trade, that's gonna push read
back because if we bringing mirror to the starting lineup
man van Fleet, he gotta play. He gotta get his
man's according to his contract, he gotta play so many minutes.

Speaker 1 (39:20):
No, that's not true.

Speaker 4 (39:21):
What are you talking.

Speaker 1 (39:22):
There's no there's no minutes. Love me, Frank, I love you.
You're just making stuff up. First of all, you said
I got the whole firing thing in Boston's one thing.
And then you keep calling him a mirror Thomson, which
is I could get past it the first or second time,
but the third time, you know a little bit, and
then there's no minutes required. The NBA players are not
signed contracts that I must play twenty eight minutes a night.

Speaker 3 (39:44):
I mean, I know it sounds cool and everything, but
that's just not true.

Speaker 1 (39:46):
Could you imagine sitting next to Frank on a sixteen
hour flight.

Speaker 4 (39:50):
We can make that.

Speaker 1 (39:51):
Frank would to go overseas and ross. Thank you, my goodness, Frank.
I mean, I love Frank and me making a bunch
of stuff up. Appreciate Frank, but no, Frank, get in
front of that. Was Frank's at the barbershop with us,
just talking this morning. You're like, what are you talking about?
We're gonna have to we have to bring in a
live fact checker for this. Imagine if we had to
buzz Frank every time he says something factually wrong. Wouldn't

(40:15):
want that at all. We should do that on the
show Challenge Flag, But if I need to, I need
that fact check.

Speaker 3 (40:23):
Hey, Connor, I'll tell you this.

Speaker 1 (40:24):
I get a lot of people still send me email saying, hey,
what happened to lou Rawls?

Speaker 3 (40:28):
You again?

Speaker 1 (40:29):
You have free and clear guidance to run lou ralls
whenever you want to.

Speaker 3 (40:34):
I thought about it, but you guys kind of had
the back and forth going.

Speaker 1 (40:36):
So no, no, no, what Lou always saves the day.
Never feel like you can pull the plug on on,
especially when we're getting close to break. Yeah, we're going
to break now, twelve fifty six. Connor keeps us on
the clock seven one three two one two five Sevenatti
seven one three two one two five Sevenatti. To tell
the truth coming up in twenty minutes. Wonderful I've got.

(41:00):
I'm not gonna tell you what it is because I
want to. I don't want to give it away. But
there it's a variety of local issues to discuss on
believing or to tell the truth. Willie Fritz at won
thirty joints us here on seven ninety twelve fifty six
with a message here for the good folks at Big
City Wings, Big On Wings, Big On Sports, Big on

(41:21):
Monday Night, Football Tonight, Big On watching Rockets, And what

(42:03):
Texas Big On Wings, Big On Specials, four fifty five
fifty Big Brews, and one dollar chicken tenders at Big
City Wings and Big Citywings dot.

Speaker 2 (42:10):
Com launch timers. This is the Matt Thomas Show.

Speaker 1 (42:18):
Lots of headlines that get to here. On the second
hour of The Matt Thomas Show, Dennis Allen, the Saints coach,
has been fired. Zero surprise on that. You start the
year two and zero with two very impressive wins and
then you get your ass kicks seven straight weeks. Was
that why Gordy had a little extra pep in his
step today? Yeah, I think he wanted somebody to named
Roba Show or Arsonobadeau to coach the team. Speaking of Thibodeau.

(42:43):
Tom Thibodeau will be in town Nicks and Rockets tonight
inside Tota Center. Will have the broadcast for you, beginning
with the launch pad at six thirty, then a tip
time at seven forty five. Every NBA game tonight is
staggered by fifteen minutes. Wow, And they're saying, do this
because we want everybody to know that we're not gonna

(43:04):
be around tomorrow so you can go vote. So huh,
I thought it was. I thought it was to get
like a like a red zone feel on League pass
or something. They should do that every night. It wouldn't
be a terrible thing. But I think people can play.
I don't think. I don't think people are over the
excited about tonight being seven forty five. It's a school night.
I know you're not happy about it. I'm like, I'm
tired already. Take a little nap after to show it
in coffee after No, nothing can happen naping a coffee.

(43:26):
You'll be napping a coffee is perfect. Okay, what else
we got going on? The Raiders fired a bunch of
offensive assistants. What's the point that's coordinating? My god?

Speaker 13 (43:35):
Yeah, I can't believe you guys couldn't turn Gardner Minshew
into an offensive force along with Jacoby Myers and Trey Tucker, like,
come on, and Alexander Madison who's been washed for like
five years.

Speaker 1 (43:47):
Yeah. Also, Dak Prescott out significant time with a hamstring injury,
which means he will definitely miss the game against the
Texans a week from Monday, a lot of prime time.
You don't want to celebrate injury, but for the Texans
AT's good. By the way, I meant to ask you
about this, speaking of celebrating injury. You did the show
on Friday when I was up in College Station. How

(44:08):
was the audience feeling about Kenyon Green missing the year
with the shoulder injury. We didn't really take any calls
on that. And again, you don't want to celebrate an injury,
but the Texan should be better on the field without him.
You would think unless Kendrick Green and Jared Patterson when
he gets back out of concussion protocol, just couldn't win
the job in practice because they weren't good enough. The

(44:29):
reality is, I think in sports, I'm not going to
say it's okay, but it's understandable. Does that make sense?
I agree with you. I agree with that statement. That's
a good way of framing it, because I can't believe
any serious Texan fan except like Darlene, who doesn't even
care what the results. When she heard the Kenyon Green

(44:51):
was hurt, she said, who's Kenyan Green? First of all,
she said, who is he? What does he do? And
Number Three's like, well, he's one of ours, so we're
obviously feels terrible for him. Is in the game against
the Jets, and I was calling Rockets. I was kind
of peeking in on that he was getting his lunch
eating by Kewinny Williams.

Speaker 3 (45:10):
Absolutely horrific.

Speaker 1 (45:13):
Quinn Williams was taking his lunch money and hanging up
outside down by his feet every every snap. That's what
you missed? Yeah, well every time I would, I would
go check on it during a break or during halftime.
It was a strawd being pressured and or sacked. Yes,
and it was everybody, but Kenny Green has been the
worst defender, and unfortunately he's become Uh, he's taking some
of the heat. I'm sir, sh Shack Mason and Tyas

(45:35):
Howard are like, yeah, Kenny Green, Yeah, don't talk about it.
Let's talk about Kitty Green because they've been gettingup pressure
shrugs like, man, get out of here. Man, I'm doing
my job. No, you're exactly. So he is bearing the
brunt of what has been in totally bad offensive line
in terms of giving up pressure. Yeah, so uh neiless
to say. I was curious what the reaction of the
said audience was. I know Twitter was basically sorry that

(45:57):
you hurt, but you sucked.

Speaker 14 (45:59):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (45:59):
And then the thing too, these anonymous counts on Twitter like, yeah,
they're celebrating. You wouldn't say that in public, but that's
why Twitter. But nobody wants anyone to get hurt. I
didn't want. I wasn't happy Kenyon Green ripped his shoulder
out and has to have surgery. That's nobody wants to
go through that. But the reality is it's not a loss.
The reality is he was He's rated as the worst

(46:20):
guard in football. So the Texans can't get worse. Yeah,
the worst is whoever here's a replacement is will also
be the worst garden football. That's basically it. Yeap, what
else are going going on? Oh? By the way, my
son went to a the Dynamo soccer game last night.
When they end of their season. And normally I can
give two craps about that, But the reality is this.

(46:40):
I said, you know what happened last night? The two
best players got red carded, Hector Herrara and who else.
I don't know who the other guy is. I honestly
wasn't even watching. Hector Herrera got red carded. He spat
on the umpire A referee that is who was Sandy Alamar?
Which Alamar? That Robert Robert spit on a and he

(47:06):
was apologetic for it and all that sort of things.
So and the reason why I saw it was because
Daniel Lerner, who's a reporter for the Chronicles, covered the
game last night, and she said the Dynamo on her
tweet declined to make Hector Herrera available after the game,
and Chandler Rome said, I didn't see what he's saying.
Oh you didn't see Chandler Rome's respond No, I'll pull

(47:27):
it up. You can guess what clom behavior from an
organization that should be happy it's getting any coverage.

Speaker 4 (47:37):
I want you to.

Speaker 1 (47:37):
Read that again. Read that again. Chandler's the best can't
clown behavior from an organization that should be happy it's
getting any coverage and I'm gonna look at his responses. Uh, Chandler.
I love Chandler for being Chandler is always Chandler when
I get what you're saying, and that's annoying. The Dynamo
did that, But don't minimize and act like the Houston
Dynamo are completely forgotten about. Noah, Yes they are, then says,

(48:00):
then they should act like they're relevant and facilitate good
coverage for reporters following their own their team. He's absolutely
right protecting players when they spit on an official. Come on, man.
Then Alberta with a bunch of numbers says, if it's
a bother for you to cover Houston sports teams, then
maybe you don't deserve to have a career covering Houston sports.

(48:22):
Do your blanking job and stop bitching on professional clown reporter.
Ooh did Chandler respond to that.

Speaker 3 (48:28):
And Channa did not.

Speaker 1 (48:29):
He probably just blocked him and moved on. He's not
bitching about clevering the teams. He's bitching about the the
media relations department should make their players available. If there
was a huge incident as him spitting on an official
in the final game of the season and yeah, you're
the star player, right, I mean, I'm assuming you should
be made available to the media even if you don't

(48:50):
mean it. Say you're sorry, don't mean it, move on
instead for the And apparently the crowd of the I
watched the video high it's there.

Speaker 3 (48:58):
That was a great crowd of the game.

Speaker 1 (48:59):
I don't know what the exact number was, but it
looked like the stands are pretty full. They fit twenty
k in there. Yeah, so there goes that. So that's
the animal conversation for the year. But you know, they're
they've got a niche audience. My son being one of them,
he's big into it. He's ridiculously big into it, way
more than he should be. But that's a different issue
for a different time. You know you, I mean, it's

(49:22):
a first round playoff game and you're gonna go spit
on a guy.

Speaker 3 (49:25):
I mean, give me. I mean, how immature can you be?
But that's soccer. That's soccer for you, that's soccer.

Speaker 1 (49:30):
Who knows violence. Zis hitting guys and nads all the time,
faking injuries and rolling over injuries and rolling over does happen,
But flopping happens in basketball. Have flopping soccer though flopping
happens in the NFL as well it does the NBA,
is really I think number two.

Speaker 3 (49:46):
Yeah, the NBA can flop like a mada and I
see it every now.

Speaker 1 (49:49):
I mean I'm seeing it myself, So I'm not saying
that the sport that I cover doesn't do it as well.
And but also what you and I what do we
think when somebody flops in the NBA? We don't like it.
And when you're watching soccer also, fans don't like when
players flop by it, I would assume Yeah, those that
are like watching, what are you doing? That was a
fantastic flop. No, we we soccer fans hate flopping too.

(50:10):
We know it's a bad part of the game. Yeah.
Seven one three two one two five seven nineties seven
one three two one two five seven. And if you
want to jump in our conversation, we're gonna have to
tell the truth coming up in a few minutes. And again, uh,
normally would not have coach Willie on this week because
they're off this week. But when you beat Kansas State,
that's I mean, look huge, Can I just I'm gonna

(50:32):
be I'm gonna up peel the curtain a little bit.
Did you storm the field? No, you were in that
was the rockets. That wasn't a storming. It was more
like a get together. It was like it was like
a bunch of bro hugs.

Speaker 12 (50:41):
Yeah, it was.

Speaker 1 (50:43):
You can't storm when the stadium's half empty. Well, because
it was what they would have been full filled this year,
close to them. Oh but great win. Fantastic thing is this.
We were expected to win three games this year. We're
expected to finish what fifth teens out of sixteen teams
in a Big twelve? I said over Willie Fritz is

(51:05):
a good football coach. I said it smash higher. So look,
if you are if you have a lot of money,
please send some to the u of H collective so
we can buy some players. I mean, I'm gonna be
brutally honest with you. Recruiting is important. Important in my pocket,
mirror for you. I have been able to determine that

(51:32):
my voice is worth several hundred dollars a year.

Speaker 3 (51:35):
Okay, the donations I like that.

Speaker 4 (51:39):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (51:39):
Yeah, chaos in the Big Twelve? Right, you had Kansas
State losing in Iowa? Was State losing to Texas Tech?

Speaker 4 (51:44):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (51:45):
Who's winning the league? Did I read you be, says Colorado,
because Colorado could do it. Colorado's got a really easy
schedule the rest of the way. Oh that'd be cool.
I look the whole clown show over there in Colorado.
Is it can get bad, but it's entertainment. But the

(52:05):
question is can he really coach? Or does he surround
himself with outstanding lieutenants, which again that's a good CEO.
Does that puts himtuff around good people? Mm hmm? But
I don't know. Is is he a guy that literally
gets into the into the room, shut the door, turns
the film on, and go, let's go, let's break this
bad board. I can't answer that question, nor can I.

(52:27):
Let's talk to Brian before he played the tell the truth. Brian,
you're on seven to ninety, Good afternoon.

Speaker 15 (52:32):
Hey, good auftern guys, Hey Matt, real quick on the ring, Donking, what's.

Speaker 1 (52:35):
Normally the best practice for this?

Speaker 9 (52:37):
Now that I'm advocating this, but normally.

Speaker 15 (52:40):
When you get your picture, you're supposed to let it
sit a little bit. Let's art with the carbonation, don't
and yes, it's gonna be a little bit flatter, but
you can get to the bottom of it a little
bit faster.

Speaker 1 (52:49):
That's the ultimate.

Speaker 4 (52:51):
Way to do it.

Speaker 15 (52:52):
That's the way I did it back many many moons
ago when I got my ring, and is surely after
you've recrewed ninety hours of credit. So Jerally, you any
of your junior going into your senior year, is when
you do it. So congrats to him.

Speaker 12 (53:07):
On getting that.

Speaker 15 (53:08):
It is a big deal, but they wanted to get
your at thoughts on not on the fact that the
Diamondbacks have.

Speaker 4 (53:14):
Picked up the option on Suarez.

Speaker 15 (53:16):
You know, Ross you had talked about him possibly coming
here maybe as a one or two year option. Do
we think that increases the likelihood that they make they
maybe have to expand their means and go outside their
comfort zone to resign bregnant with no other great options there,
or do y'all think maybe they try and piecemeal it
together with somebody.

Speaker 9 (53:36):
Like a Monkata for a year.

Speaker 15 (53:39):
Well, they see what they have in Bryce Matthews and
supplement in other places with like whitecom or Descenzo.

Speaker 1 (53:46):
I'm gonna say that whatever contingency plans they had that
while are you Henny Suarez was part of it, I
don't think he was their plan A. So I don't
know without knowing that. I don't know that they're gonna
you know, well, Suarez is gone, we got to lock
up Bregman.

Speaker 4 (54:02):
I don't.

Speaker 1 (54:03):
I just don't think it's going to happen that way.
If you if you believe in which I believe, the
Astros are not going to resign Brean, which I don't
believe they are either. I don't think they were thinking
your Heineosarez was the great option, b I think they
were thinking about this. They were looking at their farm system.
They were they were different free agents, and they were
not just narrowing it in a one player. So I

(54:26):
don't think to answer your question, Brian, the Suarez pick
up by Arizona impacts the Astro's decision, maybe maybe a tinge.
But it also does take Bregman off the list as
a contestitor to retain the services of Alex correct correct.
So maybe there could because I always thought maybe Arizona
was going to come in and chary it, yes, spend
some big money. Actually good feeling missed by you. I

(54:47):
think I think it was because again he lives, he
has a home. I think in the Arizona Aeronoy put
your name on that.

Speaker 3 (54:53):
I'll check the archives, and I don't think I put
my name on that.

Speaker 1 (54:55):
I'm not sure. We'll check the archives. You probably make
it up. I won't seven one three two one two
five seven ninety seven one three two one two five
seven nine zero. Come on in join us here today
on a Monday ED issue of The Matt Thomas Show
with Ross seven one three two one two five seven ninety.
We'll play to Tell the Truth next, and we will
talk with Willie Fritz coming up in about fifteen minutes

(55:18):
here on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 2 (55:21):
Matt Thomas returns on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 1 (55:33):
I never know why to get done, but Ross, I
do know how to tell the truth. I have four
sports takes, Rossy, I only believe one of them. It's
up to you, Encounter, to figure out which one of

(55:54):
the four I am telling the truth? Are you ready?
Number one? I really really really really really really really
really believe that Nick Cassero is gonna make a trade
by tomorrow's three oclock deadline now because he wants to,

(56:14):
because Hannah's gonna tell him to. You just can't stand
Pat with your number two receiver gone for the year.
You can't stand Pat with your horrendously built offensive line
in which you built yourself. You've got to go and
I hate to say this overspend of the deadline, give

(56:37):
up some draft picks.

Speaker 3 (56:38):
It's gonna hurt.

Speaker 1 (56:39):
You've got to find somebody out of contention that's gonna
try to help this team improve its offensive line. So
Nick Casero, in my mind, will make a trade by
the three o'clock deadline tomorrow.

Speaker 3 (56:49):
It's too much on the line here.

Speaker 1 (56:50):
Wow, okay, okay, now where you're doing three? You don't
believe correct, Okay, hmm, this is tough. Number two. There
was an Astros There was a player the Astros were
on the chase for last year and offseason that was
very close to signing with the Astros, but ultimately to
sign to sign go elsewhere.

Speaker 3 (57:10):
Do you know what I'm speaking of? No Blake Snell?

Speaker 1 (57:14):
Oh, okay, Blake Snell got out of his contract, opted
out with the San Francisco Giants. He is once again
a free agent. I think he wants to come play
for the Astros. I think he knows that Garcia may
not be ready for the start of the season. He does.
I think he's breaking it down. I think he knows
that Verlander money is available. Now, okay. I think he

(57:37):
knows that h McCullers isn't coming back or Katie will
never come back. And I think at the end of
the day, Blake Snell is going to want to come
play for the Houston Astros. Whether or not it happens,
I think the Astros should severely kick the tires. I'm

(57:57):
bringing Blake Smell, Blake Smell, Blake Snell here, Hey, come
on two or three year.

Speaker 3 (58:04):
Deal to come pitch for the Astros.

Speaker 1 (58:06):
High dollar, low length of contract, because that's what we
know that Jim cran likes to do. Okay, So the
Astros I think should make a move for Blake Snell.
Number three. The third base openings around baseball are not
nearly as plentiful as who thought they were going to be.

(58:29):
I think when we hear a offer made by the
Astros is going to be somewhere in the five to
one to fifty range. I believe the Astros are ready
to offer him five years and one hundred and fifty
million dollars. Whether it takes it or not is likely
very doubtful. The money is good, the years might not
be good. But I think the Astros stay consistent and
say the Astros will offer at least five years and

(58:52):
one hundred and fifty million dollars to Alex Bregman. Alex Bregman,
who you think I was talking to?

Speaker 4 (58:58):
Zone out?

Speaker 1 (58:59):
Okay, I was just trying to find a college basketball
game to put on. All right, And number four, the
Dennis Allen led Saints are no more. Okay, you know
they should go gets Just stop wasting our coach as
a head coach.

Speaker 3 (59:12):
Uh, Oh, go ahead, Dion Sanders.

Speaker 1 (59:17):
Oh, okay, Diona is gonna not want to follow any
more rules. The one thing you don't have to do
in the NFL is follow any rules. Don't have to
worry about making sure kids go to class. He can
obviously coach. He can obviously be a CEO, and he
can bring in good coordinators in good position coaches and
have a general manager do as heavy lifting when it
comes to paying the players and whatnot. Because being Dion

(59:40):
just isn't good enough. It's Dion with cash. At Colorado.
You can have the best of both worlds. You can
coach in the South. You can coach against a team
that you've you've been, you've played for before you get
in the NFL. Zero pressure with that if the Saints
were smart, they would go kick the tires on Dion
Sanders in this whole charate of him being college coach

(01:00:01):
when he has best served to be a man leading
an NFL team. And by the way, it would be
a big, splashy hire and something the Saints have not
done since getting rid of Sean Payton. So in my
takes here, they are number one Casserro is gonna have
to make a trade with his hand forced by Hannah McNair. Correct. Okay,
Number two Astros should make a move for Blake Snell.

(01:00:23):
Number three of the Astros will offer at least five
years and one fifty to keep Alex pregnant as an Astro,
And number four of the smart Saints were smart, they
would go get Dian Sanders to coach the Saints next
year as a splashy hire for a team that needs
some splash. Which one of those four? Am I telling
the truth? McGovern ross, You want to you want to

(01:00:48):
give my thoughts, you want to give your thoughts, I'll
give you my thoughts if you'd like. Yeah, I go first,
two and four. I'd say two and four are out.
I think he knows they're not playing for they're not
paying now and Deon Sanders is not going to the NFL.
I agree with that.

Speaker 4 (01:01:03):
I don't.

Speaker 1 (01:01:03):
I don't think Matt holds Deon Sanders's coaching acumen and
high esteem, So I don't think that he would hold
that opinion. Now I would be. I was ready to
toss out number one the second it came out of
Matt's mouth until he mentioned Hannah making the push for

(01:01:24):
the move. Yeah, Now, is that gonna happen? I don't know.
But remember we have to get into the warped mind
of Matt Thomas. So does Matt Thomas believe that? Is
one thing rather than will it happen, which, of course
we know on this segment he makes a lot of
bad takes that don't come to pass. That's another thing.

Speaker 4 (01:01:43):
Point.

Speaker 1 (01:01:44):
And then three, hey, hey give me nice I'm nice
to you mostly. And then three. I mean three is reasonable.
But I don't understand like they're gonna make him an
offer before he hits the market. Are you saying before
the I'm saying we hear an offer right when we
win something with something it comes out when it's gonna
be five one, says sources close to the MLB sources

(01:02:06):
say the Astros off five. That's that's where I think
they're gonna be. Okay, that's my take. I mean that's
really I think one and three are both reasonable. That's
where I have it. I gotta get to coach. Okay, sorry,
you want to pick one and I'll pick the other. Yeah, yeah,
I'll go. I'll go one, you go three. Okay, sure,
let's go.

Speaker 4 (01:02:23):
Let's do it.

Speaker 1 (01:02:24):
One of us will be right. Dion Sanders says, no
coaching acum, And you're right about that. That was an
easy one. Yes, that was easy for two. I tried
to keep it straight. The Astros are not going after
Blake Snow.

Speaker 4 (01:02:34):
I'm sorry. I would agree.

Speaker 1 (01:02:35):
It's just way too much money for a guy that
averaged five innings to start last year and didn't even
pitch the first two months of the year. So no,
thank you.

Speaker 4 (01:02:43):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (01:02:43):
My answer is this, the Texans think they're really, really close.
They're gonna have They cannot spend the next half of
the season with this makeshift offensive line Hannel we made
fun of at Neiman Marcus and at any of the
stores she goes to. Uh, She's to go on to
Knick's office and say, I don't care what it takes.
You've got to go make a trade. Okay. And I

(01:03:05):
put that on my Twitter account last week too, So
you used to call it was a little precursor for you. Yeah,
I saw you put tweet that. Yeah, so that's what
I believe. Okay, not that I don't believe Bregman's going
an offer, but it will. I think we're gonna be
very disappointing, just like we were when Carlos Craig got
to Supporn fifties is probably reasonable, I hope, And I
guess we'll see. If you're right. If the Texas make
a trade, your take will be right, correct Russ. If not,

(01:03:25):
I'm not even a Texans fan. They had to do
it for your fandom. They have to do something. They
can't let this crap on the offensive line stay out
there like that. They just can't, right tell me they
can't do it. We'll see. They have a little bit
more leeway with Kenyon Green being out as in I
don't know whoever was believing in Kenyon Green. Let's just

(01:03:45):
say if it was Dimiko or if it was Casario,
that person, their battle is lost.

Speaker 3 (01:03:49):
They do have to do something. Yeah, that's my point.
All right, thank you. That's this week's edition of To
Tell the Truth.

Speaker 1 (01:03:53):
Up next, Willie Fritz is our head coach at the
University of Houston Cougar's big win against Kansas State, and
he'll join us after I take about Uptown Appliance Repair.

The website is Uptown Appliant Repair dot com Uptown a
Plant Repair dot com one thirty three, one thirty three

(01:05:20):
on Sports Talk seven and I let's spend a couple
of minutes. Now, Normally we would give coach Fritz the
week off and talk to him next week before the
game against the Arizon a wildcast. But when you beat
the number seventeen team in the country, you gotta come
on the Matt Thomas old Ross coach, Congratulations, what an
awesome Saturday it was at TDECU Stadium.

Speaker 14 (01:05:37):
Yeah, it was. Thank you very much for having me on.

Speaker 4 (01:05:39):
Man.

Speaker 11 (01:05:39):
It was really uh happy with the kids. They just
did a super job. And you know, there's some tough
sledding there in the third quarter and we've got two
scores and he just kept chipping away at it. Played
great in the fourth quarter. I scored him fourteen to
zero and won the time of possession as well, and
just really finished the ballgame strong for a big win

(01:06:03):
at home.

Speaker 14 (01:06:03):
It's great to have the student.

Speaker 11 (01:06:05):
Body rush the field and it was just a great
memory for all of us.

Speaker 1 (01:06:10):
You mentioned time of possession for a team and is
as balanced as Case State is offensively. I guess the
best thing you can do, but that's your defense is
doing its job, is keeping guys off the field and
letting you guys, you know, not trying to go for
the big play over and over again, but just get
the five six yards every single down, keep the drive alive,
and keep that Waldcat offense of the off the field yourselves.

Speaker 11 (01:06:31):
Yeah, they were averaging I believe, two hundred and twenty
eight yards a game rushing.

Speaker 14 (01:06:35):
We held them to eighty two yards.

Speaker 11 (01:06:37):
They had a you know, their tailback is one of
the leading rushers in the nation.

Speaker 14 (01:06:41):
And defense played great.

Speaker 11 (01:06:43):
And you know, one of the things that happened this
year is we had sixty three new guys on the
team and we had to figure out our strengths and
weakness this first time I've been through the Big twelve obviously,
and you know, we've got a good defense. You know,
we got to ride down and do a good job
of playing penalty free and turnover free on offense, which

(01:07:03):
we did for the most part, and that allows us
to you know, stay in position to you know, be
able to win the game.

Speaker 14 (01:07:12):
At the end.

Speaker 11 (01:07:12):
I thought we had some big plays in the kicking game,
making them go the long field.

Speaker 14 (01:07:16):
We do a stat called hidden yards.

Speaker 11 (01:07:19):
You know, that's where our starting field position is for
our offense, and you know their starting field position for
their offense.

Speaker 14 (01:07:26):
And we had one hundred and fifty six hidden.

Speaker 11 (01:07:29):
Yards, so we were going shorter fields, they were going
longer fields and over four quarters.

Speaker 14 (01:07:34):
That really helps you out.

Speaker 1 (01:07:35):
The game started about an hour later, which wasn't great,
but it could have been a lot worse. We've all
been through longer delays than that. How did you keep
the guys amped up knowing that you were going to
start on time on Saturday.

Speaker 4 (01:07:47):
You know, we did a good job of that.

Speaker 11 (01:07:49):
You know, I've obviously I've been in a few of
these before, and you got to keep coaching them during
that time period.

Speaker 14 (01:07:56):
Get off your feet.

Speaker 11 (01:07:57):
You know, every time there's a lightning strike, it's another
half before we can go out.

Speaker 14 (01:08:01):
So I had a pretty good idea of who we're
going to be able to come out.

Speaker 11 (01:08:05):
You know, our our guys, our red shirt guys, young
guys that don't play a whole lot and are kind
of going through a red shirt year. They really did
a super job of keeping the energy and the juice,
especially when we were walking out the tunnel for the
game after the hour delay.

Speaker 14 (01:08:23):
A great job at halftime as well.

Speaker 11 (01:08:25):
Everybody's got a job to do, and those guys did
their job to perfection, keeping our guys hyped up.

Speaker 1 (01:08:31):
Willie Fritz with us here on Sports Talk seven ony.
It's very rare that a quarterback has a perfect completion
to a ten percentage. Xeon was eleven of eleven, and
that's kind of what you needed him to do. Just
take the intermediate pass, not trying too dangerous. It feels
like his decision making it was never bad to begin with,
but it feels like it's getting better every single week
for you.

Speaker 11 (01:08:52):
Well, it is, he's you know, feeling more comfortable in
the offense.

Speaker 14 (01:08:58):
You know, we got to do a great job.

Speaker 11 (01:09:00):
Protecting him getting open as well, you know, not not
having minus play. That's that's they're hard to overcome, and
and we've done a good job and not putting this
in those positions very often, but he was very accurate,
and we need to do a good job of trying to.

Speaker 14 (01:09:19):
Improve our our passing game. That's gonna be big for
us as well. Coming down the stretch here.

Speaker 1 (01:09:27):
How are you allowing the guys to get some time off?
This is kind of strange, a second off week in
one season, and I don't know how the schedule worked
out that way, but he's gonna give some guys a
chance to maybe catch up on some classes, maybe in
the workouts.

Speaker 3 (01:09:38):
What is the plan for the next handful of days.

Speaker 11 (01:09:40):
Well, we lefted and met and put this game to
bed this morning, and we're off tomorrow. I'm encouraging all
the guys to make sure they go out and vote,
and then we're gonna practice on Wednesday and Thursday, and
then give him off Friday Saturday, and then come back
on Sunday because we have a Friday game against Arizona

(01:10:00):
a week from this Friday, So a little bit different schedule,
but it's good for us right now. It comes at
a good time, or you know, you get this part
of the season, everybody's beat up a little bit. This
they'll give the guys an opportunity to heal up and
get ready for the stretch run.

Speaker 1 (01:10:15):
Farlets your run. LA Kansas State and Utah were considered
two of the leading candidates to play in a Big
twelve championship game. And I think you your program by itself,
did a job and maybe ruining those dreams for both
of those schools. And I know it's been a transition,
and these are a lot of your kids are not
yours that you brought in originally and trying to work
through the kinks of building this program. But to have

(01:10:36):
these these games mean so much of those other teams,
for you to surprise them, for these kids not to
give up after some difficult times this year, You've got
to be really pleased every time you walk into the
in the locker room and want to work with these
guys because they do want to get better and they've
not given up on the season.

Speaker 14 (01:10:53):
Well, you're exactly right.

Speaker 11 (01:10:54):
They all all of them are by guys now and
we're just we've had so many problems and issues with
with going through adversity early in the year.

Speaker 14 (01:11:05):
You know, it's uh, it's just it's been a lesson.
I think for all of this.

Speaker 11 (01:11:10):
You know just about you know, fighting through adversity and
keep going and being positive about things and not not
you know, looking backwards whether you had success or maybe
you didn't have success, and you know, and just going forward.

Speaker 14 (01:11:25):
And the guys have done a good job of that.

Speaker 11 (01:11:26):
And I'm just very very proud of the effort that
everybody in the programs you know, put forward so far
this season.

Speaker 1 (01:11:34):
Well, as an alum, thank you for your hard work,
your kids hard work. It's so much fun seeing you
play and the way you've bounced back last a couple weeks.
Get some time off of yourself if you can. I
know there's a grandchild that would love to see you
a little bit in the next couple of days. Spend
some time with him, and we will talk to you
next week before that game against Arizona.

Speaker 14 (01:11:52):
Thank you, man, I appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (01:11:53):
Goo, thanks very much. Willie Fretz joining us here on
the Matt Thomas Show with Ross. We appreciate him stoping
by on this some Monday. The Cougars beat Kansas State
for a second straight win against a very very good
opponent and hopefully get out to see them play one
more time. Bet it will be the last home game
of the year. Two road games left to go, at
Arizona and at by BYU, So there is a small chance.

Speaker 3 (01:12:18):
I'm not trying to put the cart before the head
of horse. They're four and five.

Speaker 1 (01:12:21):
They'd have to go two and one to get to
six and six, which would make them ball eligible. And
for a team that had I don't know, no recruits
until sixty three new players, sixty three new players come
in and get to a ball game in that first
year for Willy Fritz. I don't want to say it
would be a miracle, but it would preaky damn close.
I would think it would speak to good coaching. Yeah,
WILLI Fritz is a good coach, and I want him

(01:12:42):
to stick around. I just I'm tired of the revolving door.
My man, I got me b early honest with you.
I don't think he's how old is he? Sixties can
be fine, it'd be fine. And we're paying him a lot.
I mean, you're doing quite well. That's good, Big twelve
money's not bad.

Speaker 3 (01:12:58):
Yeah, all right, So all right, so we're gonna focus
this week on Texas.

Speaker 1 (01:13:02):
Who they plan this week? That would be the Florida Gators. Hmm,
you're gonna help that Florida coach get to the exit
pretty quick here. I'm not gonna do anything. I'm gonna
watch it again. I'm thinking about going to the game in Austin.
Huh what times the game? The game starts eleven am?
I mean I'm off at three on Friday getting down

(01:13:24):
grade eleven am. Whyn't you play two through the Big
Boys do? It's Florida?

Speaker 3 (01:13:27):
You got the Big Game kickoff noon?

Speaker 4 (01:13:29):
I don't believe.

Speaker 1 (01:13:29):
Did you see what happened this weekend with Big Noon?
People were upset with Penn State, Ohio State a big
So the TV network's determine the times. Yes, so it's
not anything to do with but Penn State. There's a draft, right,
and I think Fox gets They all rotate, but some
get networks get top priority over others. Yeah, and uh
so the Big Noon, it was Fox's turned to pick
the game, and they said they want to put Ohio

(01:13:51):
State Penn State on it nude Eastern time, and that
means they put their pregame show. Well, Game Day went there. Yeah,
and then Pat McAfee was making fun of the fact
that he knew that a lot of Penn State fans
did not want the game at twelve o'clock Eastern time,
and so he kind of made fun of Big Noon
and they were screaming f bombs at Big Noon the
Fox pregame show because we got people in our area.

Speaker 3 (01:14:11):
Where where's y'all's people at? So it is weird how.

Speaker 1 (01:14:15):
Game Day and Big Noon game that Fox would allow,
that Fox would would be able to go to a
Fox game and have ESPN do their pregame show from there,
because the ESPN does no more Big ten stuff. They're done.
I didn't know that. Yeah, if you want to watch
a Big ten game, it's either on Fox or it's
on Yeah, it's cool that the Game Day goes to

(01:14:37):
the Big Game, no matter if they have the game. Yeah,
was that the Big Game? Though? I want to watch it.
Every time I watch a Penn State game, I get
utterly bored. It was two top five teams. Yeah, but
James Franklin never beats top five teams, not usually, not usually.
I don't think he's ever had done. I think it's one.
I think he's like one in ten or something. So
so Penn State loses again to Ohio State and James Franklin.

Speaker 3 (01:14:58):
I don't know if you said this is this there's
a video of us.

Speaker 1 (01:15:00):
Out down the streets. He walks towards his locker room,
and some fans just given him the business about the
lack of scoring that the Penn State had late in
the game. And they have three trips inside the ten
yard line and got three points out of the three
total trips. And this guy's probably twenty two to twenty three,
a little look a college student of me, but didn't
look he's, you know, forty six years old either.

Speaker 3 (01:15:21):
And he is mouthing off at Franklin. So James Franklin.

Speaker 1 (01:15:24):
Turns around and turns here's him and parts walking towards him.

Speaker 4 (01:15:29):
Love it.

Speaker 3 (01:15:30):
So this is James. So James Franklin is saying, what's
your name?

Speaker 1 (01:15:33):
Who are you? What are you doing this? Twenty two
year old twenty three year old punk?

Speaker 4 (01:15:38):
Did you see what he did?

Speaker 1 (01:15:39):
No, he just turned around and left. He was protected
by he was in the stands. Franklin couldn't come over
the over the wall.

Speaker 4 (01:15:48):
Yeah, and the.

Speaker 1 (01:15:49):
Guy turned around. I mean he totally lost. I love
that you could smacktok coach. When you have police security
around you, you can get away with it. He did
this the opposite. I love that did you see the
guy the the guy that was yelling at Jason Kelcey
and got his phone smashed.

Speaker 3 (01:16:06):
I heard it, I didn't say as a.

Speaker 1 (01:16:08):
Kid walking behind Jason Kelcey and screaming your brother is
ah a slur, A slur for dating Taylor Swift. Jason
Kelsey turns around, grabs his phone and gronk spikes it
into the ground, smashing the phone. Then he picks the

(01:16:28):
phone up and walks away. Jason Kelsey does, that was awesome.
Now that's equally awesome. I would have loved for the guys,
for Franklin, the kids, or whoever the adult was, to
just have a good old fashioned knockdown these kids. He
just turned around and took off. These kids are too
hiding behind their screens talking trash and what happens in
the weird world. Sometimes you're gonna get confronted, and a

(01:16:51):
lot of these kids. Are you ready for that? And
the best thing you can do is, if you're gonna
confront finish it off, don't leave. You gotta talk about it,
you gotta be about it. That's how I used to
in the world before these internets and these social media's. Matthew,
you got that right, all right? You made Now you
may uh dmiko O. Ryan is going to talk in

Speaker 2 (01:18:08):
The Matt Thomas Show continues on Sports Talk seven ninety
where Rockets and Astros played and real Texans talk.

Speaker 1 (01:18:31):
On Sports Talk seven. I need to meet O. Ryans
is going to speak to the media coming up in
a few minutes. What do you think is gonna say?
We're actively answering phone calls, We're dialing up, making some
phone calls, gonna try to figure out what's going on.
We're always looking for ways to improve the team, whether
it be internally and externally. And that's more of a
question for Nick, and I do have questions for Nick,

(01:18:53):
and we talk all the time, and the line of
communication is open as far as how we can improve
the team, and all options are on the table. So
let me ask you this. We do this all the
time when we talk about the Astros trade deadline. We
don't normally do it with the Texans of the NFL
because the NFL trade deadline has largely been anticlimactic. Uh,

(01:19:14):
if the Texans don't make a move for alignment, and
the difference is we don't know line men per se
that are available. Like in baseball, we have an idea
of Detroit's got a second basement they're willing to move,
or we have a outfielder with the Angels, or there's
a picture available for the Phillies. So it's we can identify.
It's hard for the average person to identify. Oh, the Panthers,

(01:19:40):
right guards available, you know what I mean. It's just
it's harder.

Speaker 3 (01:19:42):
We can't. We don't look into it that way.

Speaker 1 (01:19:45):
I've sild the name Andrews Pete from the Raiders. It
was a former pro bowler and he's on the Raiders.
When people call our show and we talk about the Astros,
especially around the trade deadline, we've we've given them not
the mandate, but the heavy suggestion. To Dana Brown and
to uh, what's his name, James Klick, you gotta do something.

(01:20:08):
You can't. We're not gonna be able to get over
the hump. The Astros. We cannot get over the hump.
This is exactly how I feel about the Texans. I
just don't know the frame of reference of players that
are being discussed. If the Texans don't make something done
by three o'clock tomorrow, Ross that's a huge red flag
to say that either they're not all in or the

(01:20:28):
price was too rich. But I can't imagine prices. Baby
j Patterson can't beat that, can't beat them. No, no,
Jared Patterson for two weeks, not for life. Okay to me,
that feels like that there is uh that what what
we see and what they see are two different things.

(01:20:50):
And at least in the Astros case the last couple
of years, what we saw needing a starting pitcher, needing
an extra bat, needing an extra bullpen arm, the Astro
have not acquiesced and said, okay, well the media is
it No, But I'm saying that we're getting the same
glimpse that they are. What are the Texans if they
don't make a move seeing that we're seeing right now,
If they don't make it, If they don't make a move,

(01:21:12):
they're happy with Jared Patterson or Kinder Green. They're saying
they can't he can't be any worse than Kenny Green,
or maybe even better. Maybe the team improves internally that way,
and we can communicate with our guys and our problems
are internal. They're not going to get addressed externally. I
think the Texans relationship with its fans is an all

(01:21:34):
time high right now. Not that you should do anything
for the fans, but it is a component of life. No, no,
I do. I mean, it's not a big part, but
it's a small component. I don't think that Casearia is
thinking about the fans at all. So tell me again,
what if he doesn't make a move, what he's really

(01:21:54):
putting in? What I mean, what is the market, what
is it costing? What are the cap implications? The thing
we're not saying on anybody right now in the NFL,
all the trades have happened so far in the NFL,
there has not been one that has been mind blowing
in terms of what you have which you've had to
give up. It just hasn't been. But it also, I mean,
we have to go through every single team's cap space
and their future cap space and all that type of stuff.

(01:22:14):
In the heart. It's easy in baseball trade them and
pay them, but in football you have cap implications for
everything you do. Yeah, and look, I can't imagine anybody
is cash flush right now. Normally you do keep some
money in reserve, right for guys that you want to

(01:22:35):
sign middle of the season. Yes, so I'm sure they've
done that too. Yeah, But if you're talking about giving
up a future fourth or a fifth for somebody that
can come in here and step in right away and
start on your offensive line that you think could seriously
better than anybody's here, you've got to make that move.
This you're gonna get your quarterback killed, and not literally configuratively,

(01:22:57):
he's already getting killed. And like I said, maybe they're
saying Kenyon Green is gone and we're gonna get better
that way, But to say that it was only Kenyan
Green's fault for while the Texans struggled, simplistic. But but
you were talking about making a trade, and that would
be Kenyan Green's spot. You're not probably you're probably not
going to trade somebody to start in Juice s. Grug spot.
And you're certainly not trading somebody to start in Shack

(01:23:19):
Mason's spot with what you're paying him. But aren't you
bringing in somebody here to to maybe force some competition
and maybe somebody's having a bad day, You're you're being
somebody in to plug and play. You'd be bringing somebody
in to start along that offensive line, and then the
the easiest place to plug right now is your left
guard who was the worst in football and then is
now out for the season. I'm just I think if

(01:23:45):
you watch the game against the Jets and you watch
this offensive line this year, to say it's only Kenyon
Green's fault is being overly too simplicity. I agree, but
they're not gonna I don't think they're going to trade
for a center or trade for a right guard, So
it's gonna be left guard is where they're gonna trade.
Let's hear what Demiko has to say about this coming

Damik o' ryan's visiting with the media. Hopefully there'll be
some legitimate questions asked seven one three two one two
five seven ninety seven one three two one two five
seven ninety Believe it or not? Today Quincy Jones ninety

(01:25:32):
one years, what a life? The greatest music producer in
the world, A titan of the industry. I don't know
very many music producers. Doctor dre Clive Davis. I'm gonna
be kind of tap out after that. Uh what is
the guy? Uh Phil Spector? Oh yeah, yah, yeah, good calling.

(01:25:54):
That one was Barry Gordy doing a lot of producing.
I mean, Isaac Hayes did a lot. I'm so Proudy,
thank you for being deeper than that on this. Rudy
Van Gelder did a lot of great jazz production. George
Martin was the longtime producer for the Beatles. Oh yeah,
that's true. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:26:12):
Uh, that's gonna go take care of that day.

Speaker 4 (01:26:14):
Okay.

Speaker 3 (01:26:15):
So ultimately that's what we've got.

Speaker 1 (01:26:17):
We have man generation, I mean literally generational. I want
to say producer. Now this will be for believe it
or not. I want to say he has the record
for a solo like one person winning Grammys, most Grammies.
He's got like twenty three Grammies or something. You can
be looking that up. I know, so believe it or not. Today,

(01:26:38):
all things about the passing of one of the greats,
well maybe the greatest, right, I'm gonna go yeah, I'll
go with the greatest.

Speaker 4 (01:26:48):
Okay.

Speaker 1 (01:26:48):
Seven seven seven will be talking with you over the
next hour or so.

Speaker 3 (01:26:55):
After we hear from Damiica.

Speaker 1 (01:26:57):
We also have a farewell to a former astro. We
can say he's a former aster and we'll have that
coming up, coming up in about fifteen or some minutes
from day. Ali Beyonce has the record She's Got thirty two,
Quincy Jones third with twenty eight Grammy wins. So who
is Quincy Jones most associated with? Michael Jackson? Probably in

(01:27:18):
the popular solo not Jackson as a group, just as
a solo artist. Michael Jackson needed Off the Wall and Thriller,
two of the greatest, say he did. He's two for
two rangements and with uh. With Ray Charles, they met
as teenagers. That'll be a question, by the way, and
he arranged a lot of the Frank Sinatra stuff, and
he arranged maybe the most difficult song ever performed by

(01:27:39):
a collection of people. Oh, we are the World, We
are the World. Yes, you know what, I got a
contribute question for you.

Speaker 4 (01:27:44):
Believe it or not.

Speaker 1 (01:27:45):
I will put We Are the World on on my
phone and listen to it once a month at least.
I'll say believe you should believe it? Okay, But yeah,
when you when you were part of the careers and
success of Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, and Michael J.

Speaker 7 (01:28:00):
I mean.

Speaker 3 (01:28:03):
Pretty pretty good, pretty pretty good?

Speaker 1 (01:28:06):
Yeah, all right, I believe did you get a presidential
Let's go to de mamka right now?

Speaker 4 (01:28:13):
What are some common.

Speaker 8 (01:28:14):
Thread to say with the line and you guys.

Speaker 4 (01:28:17):
Trying to get the scored for our team? Right now?

Speaker 16 (01:28:20):
We all have to play better, Uh, every position, you know,
we all have to play better. It's not one position.
Everybody has to play better for us to win games.
You know going forward? Is everybody playing better?

Speaker 4 (01:28:33):
Can changes to the offensive?

Speaker 16 (01:28:35):
Oh well, well look at that as we continue to
go throughout the week.

Speaker 4 (01:28:39):
That is right now again, everybody has to play better.

Speaker 11 (01:28:43):
To you that maybe you haven't tried to help the
past block and get more on track.

Speaker 16 (01:28:48):
Yeah, it's it's not just you know, everybody's focus is
just on the past blocking and of course we've had
some bad reps in the past blocking, but it's it's
everybody working together.

Speaker 4 (01:28:57):
It's an entire offense working together, right, It's never.

Speaker 16 (01:29:01):
Just one thing, right, And I know it's easy to
point the finger at one thing.

Speaker 4 (01:29:06):
It's never just one thing.

Speaker 16 (01:29:07):
It's all all eleven guys working together, being in scene.

Speaker 17 (01:29:13):
V utilizing his checked out just a little bit more
and could help mitigate ant leabet some of that pressure.

Speaker 16 (01:29:19):
We're when I talk about everybody playing better, it's everybody.
It's it's some quarterbacks, the tight ends, the receivercity, our
entire offense, right, our entire defense, our special teams unit.
That's where I'm at, Like we can hone in on
different spots and all those things. It doesn't matter each position,
no matter what it is, from top to the bottom,

(01:29:40):
we all play better.

Speaker 4 (01:29:41):
We'll be in position to win games.

Speaker 1 (01:29:43):
Obviously, the past block is gonna have attention. But the
run block he's been pretty good with Joe. Can you
put that in perspective of.

Speaker 16 (01:29:49):
What he's been able to Joe's been dynamic for us.
I think every time he touches the ball, he's gonna
gain some type of positive yardage. And that goes to right,
all that creator goes to how the guys are blocking
up front. They do a great job of blocking it.
In the run game. We had a lot of lot
of lanes available in the run game, and Joe runs

(01:30:10):
the ball with that you know, relentless mindset, physical running
guys over, you know, playing the game the right way.
He brings a passion, he brings an edge to the
game that I think everybody can feed off of.

Speaker 18 (01:30:23):
I'm as overseeing the defense, it seems like whether there's injuries,
whether it's putting guys in the right place, they seem
to step up and you put them in the best
place to succeed. Do you have the confidence on the
offense that when it comes to these protection things, the staff.

Speaker 4 (01:30:36):
Can do the same thing.

Speaker 16 (01:30:38):
Yeah, for all of us, it's just coaches, right, is
all of our job to put our guys in position
right to be successful, right, And it's our player's job
to go out and execute and play to the best
of their ability, and when their opportunity comes, are you
making those one on one plays?

Speaker 4 (01:30:55):
Because that's what the.

Speaker 16 (01:30:56):
Game ultimately always comes down to, no matter how you
slice it up right in the league, like, are your
players making the plays they need to win games? That's
what it always come down to.

Speaker 5 (01:31:07):
We're talking a lot about culture here Houston and this
mor mentality h since the pride uh that's been brought
back here to Houston. The team that's coming in Troy,
and what do you con see in the past few
years through with their culture and how vitalized Detroit is.

Speaker 16 (01:31:22):
Out with their team and saying Detroit the past couple
of years. I think you see the culture. You see
the the energy that UH coach Campbell has brought to
that team, right, you see the mindset, the toughness, physicality, right,
their style of play. It shows up on tape, you know,
every week. So and that's and they got really good
players as well.

Speaker 4 (01:31:41):
Across the board.

Speaker 16 (01:31:42):
They're able to add a lot of good players, a
lot of good young players that are exhibiting right, that
mindset and that culture. And it's a really good team
coming in here this week. And we're very excited about
the matchup.

Speaker 4 (01:31:54):
Collins and whether it gonna get over the play.

Speaker 16 (01:31:55):
Yeah, we'll continue to evaluate Nico throughout the week, see
where he see where he is.

Speaker 1 (01:32:01):
DOMI good?

Speaker 2 (01:32:01):
Can you.

Speaker 1 (01:32:03):
It's a two part questions. So, the the offensive line
has been doing a obviously ah a better job of
lunch blocking. Are you surprised if there's some challenges? I
know it's different with pass blocking. Is it something that
it's something.

Speaker 5 (01:32:13):
That you think you guys collectively and is it is
a fix that you guys can handle?

Speaker 16 (01:32:19):
You like, that's the use for our guys up front,
Like you said, they've done a good job of blocking.
They've had a lot of good pass reps too. I
think everybody highlights the bad reps. Of course, that's where
the high that's where the focus goes. You know, on
the bad reps, we've had really good pass rush snaps.
And you know, where are we with the timing, with

(01:32:40):
the progression of the routes and all those that are
we open you know, in the timing of the place.
So all of those things matters when we do have
good protection and all of that is a factor as well.

Speaker 17 (01:32:51):
For you more coach, you talking about UH you've talked
about second half of Jesun stand on the UH offensive
side of the ball, what are what are you seeing
as far as maybe some of them, I don't want
to say, the play calling and some of the inefficiencies
that they're having in the second half as far as scoring.

Speaker 16 (01:33:08):
And for us, we've done a great job of moving
the ball to get you know, across midfield. And you know,
very encouraged with that progress of us moving the football
because we can't move it when we need to. It's
just when we've gotten across midfield, we hadn't been able
to you know, get points. You know, those red zone opportunities.
They come up very slim, you know in games, and

(01:33:30):
when we are there, of course we want to capitalize
and be better. We haven't been really good in the
red zone and on third down right where you sustain
those drives and score points.

Speaker 4 (01:33:40):
So that's been a focus.

Speaker 16 (01:33:42):
We understand that, and we understand we have to make
some adjustments and put our guys in a better position
to score points. Look like, you guys left home, not
let but put Stingley in a lot of one on
one situations and the obviously was able to drive in
the situations.

Speaker 4 (01:33:57):
What kind of give you guys to confidence of leaving
one on one against the fonte.

Speaker 16 (01:34:00):
Mike Williams and would have kind of allowed him to
hen holding only against those pretty good receivers. Yeah, Stingley
is he's a good player, good young player. He competes,
He challenges receivers down the field when the ball is up.
He he doesn't find himself in a position where he's panicking, right,
He's calm at the catch point, allowing him to you know,
kind of go up and defend those passes. And he's

(01:34:22):
confident in himself and help. That's what allows you to
be a good player. Any anybody. You wanna make plays
in this league, you have to be confident and you
have to have that belief in yourself right that you
can make those plays and you thrive on those one
on one matchup opportunities and sting Stingley has done a
good job with those.

Speaker 4 (01:34:38):
You update Onerson Junior.

Speaker 16 (01:34:41):
H House Young, Yeah, we'll still evaluating, will see how
he progresses throughout the Week's about.

Speaker 5 (01:34:48):
Whether you go off you need to make him move
at the trade deadline, and you express confidence in in
the guys that you have right now, just even last
game as well as the enemies that you all have sustained.

Speaker 1 (01:34:58):
Is your opinion the same one?

Speaker 4 (01:35:00):
Where do you think?

Speaker 11 (01:35:00):
Yah?

Speaker 4 (01:35:00):
In my opinion is always the same on that.

Speaker 16 (01:35:02):
I mean, we're with Nick and the staff, we're always
looking to make our team as good as we could
possibly be, right as do we have a heightened sense
of just making a move just to make it. No,
We're always looking to add to our team, add to
our depth.

Speaker 4 (01:35:17):
That's something we do constantly throughout the year.

Speaker 16 (01:35:19):
So there isn't just a mad rush now at the
trade deadline for us to change our approach and how
we go about managing our roster, right, our roster management
doesn't change, right, We're always looking to upgrade.

Speaker 1 (01:35:32):
A couple more Kenyan going down.

Speaker 11 (01:35:35):
Just what you make of your options with Kendrick and
Jared Buck being utilized.

Speaker 16 (01:35:39):
That, Yeah, we'll see who steps up at the old
offensive line position.

Speaker 4 (01:35:42):
We'll see who steps up. See how we go out
there and get the job.

Speaker 1 (01:35:45):
Done, said coach.

Speaker 17 (01:35:48):
You you you've always expressed this. You know, it's it's
not easy to win in this league. It's a if
we we you're playing against other professionals. The Crystal Football
players going up against the Jets coming there and they tin.

Speaker 4 (01:36:00):
Six the head boss the last five.

Speaker 1 (01:36:02):
Is this kind of like a wake.

Speaker 17 (01:36:04):
Up call maybe for some of the players, some of
your players, or it's just something that you all were,
you know, saying you got to make sure that just
stay focused.

Speaker 16 (01:36:11):
Yeah, for us, I feel like our guys or focused
going into the game. And just because the record says
one thing, I don't know everybody falls into the mold.
It just because a team's record is one thing that
you're gonna go in and automatically beat a team.

Speaker 4 (01:36:27):
That's not how the league works, right.

Speaker 16 (01:36:28):
You have to earn the right to win and to
earn the right to win, you have to work the
right way throughout the week, and you.

Speaker 4 (01:36:33):
Have to make plays in game two in the game
to win.

Speaker 16 (01:36:37):
Right, Jets are a really good team, top ten defensive unit.
They got playmakers, Aaron Rodgers, Adams Garrett. It's not like,
you know, if they don't have playmakers on their team
and they were just gonna lay down because we showed up.

Speaker 4 (01:36:52):
There's never the case.

Speaker 16 (01:36:53):
So you go out and you earn the right to
win by making the players you're supposed to make, no
matter what.

Speaker 4 (01:36:58):
The record is a matter who you play.

Speaker 16 (01:37:01):
What the record say is how well are you playing
on game days?

Speaker 4 (01:37:04):
All right, thank you? Okay?

Speaker 12 (01:37:08):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (01:37:09):
Two things that not troubled me, but of concern. We'll
discuss what come back. See if you picked up on
the exact tame. Two things that I picked up on ooh,
okay seven one three two one two five seven ninety
seven one three two one two five seven nine zero.

Speaker 3 (01:37:29):
Want to take you about Berkeley I Center.

Speaker 1 (01:37:31):
I've been speaking for these folks for a very long
period of time, and I'm very happy with them because
they always are offering this kind of ways for you
to get something that will change your life, and that
is getting Lasik laser vision.

Speaker 3 (01:37:42):
Correction.

Speaker 1 (01:37:43):
It's Black Friday Lasik celebration going on right now at
Berkeley I Center where everyone's going to get sixteen hundred

forty percent off of designer sunglasses. Take it from me,
Lasik is cheaper than glasses in contexts and you'll be

three five two six eyes seven one three five two
six e y E s or b C Lasik dot com.
Sixteen hundred dollars off world class lacy, forty percent off
designer sunglasses. Take advantage of both offers today seven one
three five two six eyes. Mention me Matt Thomas, and
you'll get taken care of today for my friends at
BERKELEYYE Center. This is the Matt Thomas Show.

Speaker 2 (01:38:31):
Matt Thomas on Sports Talk seven ninety.

Speaker 1 (01:38:39):
All right, our astros tribute to a man that has
gone and left us, not like literally left the world,
but just left the team. We'll be coming up at
two thirty. Let's just do it that way. But because
I wanted to go over a couple of things. The
two observations I had from uh the availability, and I
appreciate to make go doing it. Basically just there were

(01:39:01):
a lot of point questions asked about the offensive line
and what needs to be improved, And honestly, Demiko went
to masters is that master's in coach speak and decided
to deflect it to the entire team. And I'm gonna
go ahead and give you the quote, u oh, in

(01:39:25):
response to potential changes on the offensive line, he says
everyone can play better. He was speaking in generality. Yes, yeah,
he's always mister coach speak. He shouldn't be shocking what
you say to say, Yeah, can Green sucks? I was
I fist pumped when he ripped his shoulder off. What

(01:39:45):
has come down to in today's world is he's gonna
tear in some ass from inside the locker room. Outside
he's gonna be as vanilla and as uninteresting in his
lack of transparency as possible. And that's not just him,
that's ninety percent of coaches in all sports. I think
that's how it should be. You take you take care
of the business and house. Yeah, all right, and then
when asked about Nico Collins quote, will continue to evaluate

(01:40:07):
Nico throughout the week and see where he is. That
that to me is more like that ain't a guarantee
he's playing Sunday against Detroit. Did they open up his
practice window? That's all it was said. Okay, because when
you're on IR they don't they have to open up
a twenty one day practice window or something like that.
I can't. I don't know the logistics of that. My

(01:40:28):
point is that that is selling to me. He's enjoyed
the time off, not enjoyed, but he's in. He's gotten
the most out of it.

Speaker 3 (01:40:34):
He's ready to go, raring to get after it.

Speaker 1 (01:40:36):
Look forward to seeing him on Sunday, and I could
obviously change a practice reports will be out on Wednesday, Thursday,
Friday this week.

Speaker 3 (01:40:42):
And maybe he's just being cautious.

Speaker 1 (01:40:44):
Maybe he's being a little bit coy because you don't
want to give out a lot of information about the
opposing teams.

Speaker 3 (01:40:49):
They can get ready to scout him.

Speaker 1 (01:40:51):
So but if he's practicing, it will signify that he's
at least trending in the right tur right right. I
got terrible new for you, and this is not Texas. Hey,
this is Texans realist. What we saw him seen the
last three weeks in the Texans. If they bring that
lineup Sunday to energy, Darlene can wear all the blings
she wants. Her team's gonna get her ask it by

(01:41:12):
fourteen points. Because here's the thing. Joe Mixon ROSSI is
going to get his yards. Joe Mixon gets his yards
against everybody, Yes, But is being at home going to
be able to protect c J Will? He makes him
throws and he doesn't only make on the road, probably
because he says magical things at home. It is magical

(01:41:33):
things everywhere he does. But he's a great but he's
especially good at home, just as the protection has really
failed worse at on the road in louder environments. But
I'm concerned about getting into a knockdown, drag out thirty
five thirty four type of game. And I don't think
the Texans have enough, and there are arsenal especially if
Tomiko doesn't I if Niko doesn't play. I mean, did

(01:41:54):
we even hear Xavier Hudgesson's name on Thursday night? Do
we even hear John Mechi's name on Thursday Night? You
mentioned you got a couple of targets. He was open
actually and well, oh CJ. Shroud missed him. Yeah, he
made poor throws. Xavier Hutchinson did he end up with
a catch? I don't think he did either. He had
a couple of targets, but it was a lot of
Tank Dell. Well, we figured more Dalton Schultz, more Tank

(01:42:16):
Dell and hopefully you get Nico Collins back.

Speaker 3 (01:42:19):
You know, these eyes of mine, they're NFL testing.

Speaker 1 (01:42:22):
I want you to look at I want you to
look at the feet placement this Sunday, Okay, I want
you to see if you can see he's getting if
he's saying starting the pocket and be able to make
his throws, or is he skittish because the pass rush
is coming.

Speaker 3 (01:42:35):
Again We've said this before.

Speaker 1 (01:42:36):
Pass rush for an NFL quarterback is nothing new, and
to think that he's gonna have a clean pocket for
four quarters is absurd. It's what you do in staying
in that pocket for as long as you can and
being able to make the accurate throw if you're throwing
off your back foot, if you're jumping into a pass,
if you're throwing to the side, and because you're being
rushed that's what the mistakes happened. Because from an accuracy standpoint,

(01:43:00):
c J. Strider is one of the five most accurate
quarterbacks in the NFL. Wouldn't give him the time. Yeah,
but he's been missing some throws. Let's say three targets
for Xavier Hutchins zero catches. Only people to record a catch,
Tank Dell six catches, Robert Woods two, Dalton Schultz three.

Speaker 3 (01:43:15):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:43:18):
Yeah, you're not beating the Lions with that kind of production.

Speaker 4 (01:43:21):
You just aren't.

Speaker 1 (01:43:21):
Nope, don't you think it's gonna be first of thirty
five wins? Very simplify it, but I would no. I
would say if they're shooting out with the Lions, things
are going very poorly, they can if they are allowing
thirty five points of the lines, they're gonna lose to
buy two touchdowns. As you see, you're hoping for a
Jared Goff three interception day, deflected pass, sack fumble. You're
just gonna have to You're gonna have to somewhat. You're

(01:43:44):
just got to limit the damage and force a turnover
or two. And the Texans have been good at forcing
turnovers at home, and the Texans do have a quality
win at home over Buffle Buffalo Bills, who also just
lost it home to the Miami No, no, no, they won
the one that they got the uh they got that
last yeah, yeah, Dolphin should have went for two at

(01:44:04):
the end of that game. By the way, By the way,
I was, you were watching the exact same moment. I
was two. I was running in the middle of the
field for the first half, and he dove him like,
what are you doing? Please hear Kevin Harland.

Speaker 4 (01:44:16):
Oh, he goes.

Speaker 1 (01:44:18):
I love Kevin Arland. It's like, oh no, he's running.
Get down, like the whole country get down to him.
Get down. And I'm not even to a fan.

Speaker 4 (01:44:27):
I don't know.

Speaker 1 (01:44:28):
I don't want a man dying on the field. I
don't like too much football that way. It's just me.
By the way, speaking of somebody, like he's how many
concussions has he had this this year?

Speaker 3 (01:44:36):
At least a second.

Speaker 1 (01:44:37):
Stretchered off like a couple of times this year. It's
not good. Worried about Crystal Lava and his his concussions.
He's kind a rule of thumb for you. You know, if
you have a son, baseball or basketball is much safer.

Speaker 4 (01:44:48):
Yep.

Speaker 3 (01:44:49):
Golf's fine too.

Speaker 1 (01:44:50):
Golf. Yeah, you can get hit in the head with
a golf ball, but it's rarer. It feels like rugby
maybe a little bit safer than the NFL, maybe for
head injuries. I'm serious. Let's go to the phone seven
one three five seven on my phone. My screen is
completely frozen, so I gotcha. Let's talk to Jimmy on
seven on me.

Speaker 19 (01:45:10):
Hi, Jimmy, Hey, guys, good to hear y'all on the
radio today. I just kind of had a quick comment
about the World Series. I thought y'all might think was funny.
I the day or two after the World Series, I
turned on New York Sports radio on my heart app, and, uh,
some people are calling in complaining about Judge, complaining about

(01:45:32):
Boom whatever. Probably about the third caller that I happened
to hear calls in to complain about Garrett Cole, which
that's fair, not hustling that first base play. But he
immediately and I thought this was hilarious, he said, And honestly,
he's like, we complain that on the astros because he
goes when he was in Houston, they developed he went

(01:45:53):
off on how you know Houston Rode Garrett Cole and
it's his fault. It's Astro's fault. And I just love
everything about the fact that the Yankees went further than
us this year and they didn't get to beat us
along the way, and we're still apparently in their heads.
And I just found that first off just completely insane.

(01:46:13):
But and to be fair, the radio host quickly cut
him off. He's like, he's like Parrett Cole never even
won with the Astros. So but I just thought that
was funny. Ross My question, well both for both of y'all,
But to use an analogy from the office, can y'all
explain to me, like I'm five years old, didn't just

(01:46:39):
like the thirty second version that the kickoff roles in
the NFL.

Speaker 1 (01:46:45):
You got go ahead, No, Jimmy, we'll do it for you.
But it will not take thirty seconds. You have to
kick the ball in the landing area, yeah, between the
zero and the twenty, and the defense can't pursue until
the ball is touched and if it goes into the touchback,
it goes to the thirty, not until it's kicked it

(01:47:06):
soil it's touched until the Yeah, well what do you oh?

Speaker 3 (01:47:10):
Until it's caught? Yes, you can you cannot leave.

Speaker 1 (01:47:12):
You're here. Yeah, yeah, until it's caught. Yeah, And if
it goes into a touch back, it goes to the
thirty and if it doesn't go into the landing zone
forty forty the landing zone. This is I'm gonna do
an airport voice. I like this. Can we get an
airport sound effect here? Because I'll do it? Okay, sure.

Speaker 16 (01:47:34):
Not.

Speaker 1 (01:47:35):
I don't needn airplane in the air airport Well, I
don't know, all right, I'll start because we're running a
short of time. The landing zone is designated as the
area between the receiving team's goal line and the twenty
yard line, and he kicked that hits or is caught
inside the landing zone must be returned, with the only
exception being a ball that has hits in the landing

(01:47:57):
zone but goes into the end zone. There are three
possible outcomes for the kickoffs that are not returned, starting
at the twenty yard line, the thirty yard line, and
the forty yard line. If a kick hits in the
landing zone and then goes into the end zone, it
will be considered a live ball. It must be returned
or down by the return team. The resulting touchback will

(01:48:19):
give the ball the return team in its own twenty
yard line. If a kick goes out of bounds, out
of the back of the end zone, or lands in
the end zone, stays in bounds in the end zone,
is down, it will be considered a touchback, but will
be bring brought out of the thirty yard line. If
a kick lands short of the landing zone, it'll be
treated the same as a kickoff out of bounds, and

(01:48:40):
the return team will get the ball at its own
forty yard line. For arrivals, please enter the red zone.
For departures, please drop your passengers off in the blue zone.

Speaker 3 (01:48:57):
Thank you, Thank you. It was a little bit late,
but it was fine.

Speaker 4 (01:49:03):
You hear that.

Speaker 1 (01:49:03):
That was my audition to be the voice of Intercontinental
or Hobby airport, Hell, for that matter, I take Tulsa.

Speaker 3 (01:49:09):
I'll take any airport.

Speaker 1 (01:49:10):
Okay, Matt. If anybody out there knows anybody in the
airport business, I want to be the voice of your airport.
I told you when I was in Seattle, I heard
the guy who calls the Mariners was doing that. Pissed
me off. Yeah, I'm not happy about that at all.
We say goodbye to an astro legend. That's a strong term.
Okay that.

Speaker 3 (01:49:28):
What's the next step down from legend?

Speaker 1 (01:49:31):
Uh hmmm, participator?

Speaker 3 (01:49:37):
Whatever is lower than a participator.

Speaker 1 (01:49:40):
He's lower than that.

Speaker 3 (01:49:42):
Yeah, it kind of feels like it's rude. It's the truth, though.

Speaker 1 (01:49:45):
We say goodbye to an astro after I tell you
about Quality Home Products of Texas. Quality Home Products of
Texas is hiring a license electricians and plumbers for to

Speaker 20 (01:50:46):
Hey, it's Robert Ford from the Astros broadcast team. Catch
every Astros game on Sports Talk seven ninety and the
iHeartRadio app Home of your Astros.

Speaker 1 (01:50:58):
Left handed hitter goes that bat and this one hit
well to right field again burliston, he's going back.

Speaker 10 (01:51:06):
And he'll watch that one go back to back home runs.

Speaker 21 (01:51:09):
That one over the bullpen and right center field and
Trey Cabbage.

Speaker 1 (01:51:15):
It's his first home run of the season of the Astros.

Speaker 21 (01:51:18):
Now down three to two, first home run as a
Houston Astro Tray Cabbage, Hey, he's got power. He's got
power to burn one hundred and seven off the bat.

Speaker 20 (01:51:32):
Here's the three two to a dough and that's hitting
the air down the right field line. Long run for
Cabbage and sliding makes the catch and foul territory. Heck
of a play by Cabbage sliding right at the chalk line.
As a matter of fact, he spunged a bunch of
chalk on the warning track on the foul side of

(01:51:52):
the line while making that play. One away, that's on
the way and Cabbage lined it up the middle and
then the center front base it around third. Coming home
is Myers low Perfito around third as that ball goes
all the way to the wall. Low Perfito scores Tray
Cabbage a two run double, his second two backer of
the day, and the Astros lead is ten to five.

(01:52:15):
A five run top of the eleventh the one to
zero and Rodriguez hits it pretty well. The right sense
back Cabbage at the wally.

Speaker 1 (01:52:25):
Leafs and hey cont it.

Speaker 20 (01:52:29):
Trey Cabbage took a home run away from holy On
Rodriguez two away.

Speaker 21 (01:52:36):
I started with getting back there quickly, and that's what
Cabbage did right. It hits the wall, jumped straight up
and timed it perfectly.

Speaker 1 (01:52:46):
I don't know what's more impressive. Did Tray Cabbage had
highlights or we found them. I don't know what we
pay you, Connor, but it's not enough control f Cabbage's fine.
Oh he's downgrading your Am I wrong?

Speaker 4 (01:53:03):
Am I?

Speaker 1 (01:53:04):
Oh my god, he's not wrong? Oh my god. Great effort, Connor,
great efforts.

Speaker 4 (01:53:14):
But I was.

Speaker 1 (01:53:15):
I was gonna give you your flowers, and he just
took him and threw him in the trash. Let's focus
on what's the task at hand here. Trash my one

(01:53:35):
of my worst takes of last banksball season that I
got feeling. It's fine. I had Tray Cabbage hitting seven
home runs and I didn't think I was going to
combine the minor league and the major league members together.
But I don't even think I hit that number, did I?

Speaker 3 (01:53:47):
I was wrong too. I had him at zero, he
hit one.

Speaker 1 (01:53:50):
That's true, all right, So Cabbage is now at Pittsburgh Pirate.
He was claimed that the Astros had some forty man
issues to begin with. Yeah, they had to get a
lot of guys all cleared off because of everybody. They
had so many people in the sixty day Eye had
all that they had to clear off. That feels rude,
but true, that's true. Uh, the Astros did acquire somebody

(01:54:10):
today and viget the trade. Yes, Taylor Trammel from the
New York Yankees acquired via trade six two two twenty.
That's like receivers weight in the heights. What you doing
playing the outfield for the New York Yankees or at
least a little bit? He played five games. He had
two played appearances this year. Hashtag defensive replacement, hashtag twenty

(01:54:34):
seven year old prospect. Yeah, five games for the Yankees.
He played five games for the Dodgers earlier in the year.
So he played a total of ten games in four
years his major league career, he's played one hundred and
twenty six games. Do you won his career average?

Speaker 8 (01:54:54):
Sure?

Speaker 1 (01:54:54):
Why not? Won sixty seven? Okay, career ops six thirt three,
So he's got a little pop. No I forgotten, forgot
bad in lesson it's up two hundred. Yeah, are you right?
Have fifteen home runs no ps plus of seventy nine.
Of course, league average being one hundred, I mean, not

(01:55:19):
gonna spike season ticket sales.

Speaker 4 (01:55:21):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:55:22):
Yeah, we're hoping for the best. Maybe the Astros can
turn him around. At twenty seven, twenty seven and he
has played a total of one hundred, twenty six and
twenty six games. I mean he's got that's it's literally
a cup of coffee, maybe a second cup room to
grow and improve for Taylor Trammel. I don't know what

(01:55:45):
the Astros give up in return, but it can't be much.
But here's my question is and I know and look
behind the scenes of a major league organization is something
that I'll never be a part of. But how does
he become available and how does someone go well, are
you really offering us Taylor Trammel, We'll take him. What
do you want? I mean, no, I can't imagine Taylor

(01:56:07):
Tramil being on anybody's radar. Now watch him be a
thirty steal a guy in the next year for the Astros.
I mean, I'm all for that. I'm just saying that
it's really weird for a guy that has had just
literally a couple of coffees in Major leaguer all of
a sudden is now becoming a part of a trade.
I'm sure it's a very minor trade and cash considerations.
Maybe like Trey Cabbage, they're they're hoping to strike lightning

(01:56:28):
in a bottle. It didn't happen with Tray Cabbage. And
my guess is, unless he has a spectacular spring training
next year for the Stros, he'll open up the years
a member of the Space Cowboys. By the way, Matthew,
our friend Tim Britton of the Athletic has put out projections, okay,
for free the biggest free agents in baseball. His projections
of contracts. Do you want to start with one Sodo?

Speaker 4 (01:56:53):
Yes?

Speaker 1 (01:56:53):
Okay, Yes, let's let's do that, three or four. One
Soto is going to be eleven three point fifty thirteen
years guys off by two six hundred and eleven million dollars. Yeah, okay,
that's gonna narrow it down to like one team, Corbin Burns.

(01:57:13):
I'll give you the years seven years to eighty to
eight two seventeen. Okay, see, I'm not good at this,
Alex Bregman, I'm not giving you the years.

Speaker 3 (01:57:23):
No.

Speaker 1 (01:57:26):
Now, again, we have a no bed. If it's six,
I win. If it's five or less, you get it.
At seven or more. I'm gonna go six to thirteen
seven nine.

Speaker 3 (01:57:40):
So he'd be making less per year than he is
right now.

Speaker 1 (01:57:42):
Basically m hm. So that's that's one person's opinion that
doesn't have him as a thirty million dollars year player
twenty seven million a year for seven years? Do you
think Bragman? Again, this is only one person possibly aswer
this question. Let's put this in your category.

Speaker 4 (01:57:56):
Ross.

Speaker 1 (01:57:57):
Okay, I'm gonna offer you five to one fifty or
seven uh seven?

Speaker 11 (01:58:09):
Nine?

Speaker 3 (01:58:10):
You want that? You want this the greater sum?

Speaker 4 (01:58:11):
Yes?

Speaker 1 (01:58:12):
Okay? Secure. I mean, what kind of deal is Alex
Bragg if he hits the free agency at thirty five,
thirty six years old, is he gonna be able to
get a two year a forty million dollars year. No,
I want to give you a stat And I was
doing this when I was researching for tonight's Rockets game. Okay,
and we and I don't think the majority the audience
would care about this, but it just shows you that
it's strange what drives people. So Jalen Brunson re signed

(01:58:37):
with the New York Knicks in the offseason. Okay, he
took a discount. Correct. I couldn't believe how big the
discount went. Took a huge disks. You ready for this? Yes,
So Jalen Brunson could have re signed. Now again, this
is my stat service. I don't know if this is
a hundred percent correct, but they usually don't make mistakes.
Could have signed a five year deal worth one two
sixty nine. Yes, Instead he takes a four year deal

(01:59:02):
at one sixty five or mince is one sixty five. Oh,
but you're I'll trust you. I mean, but my point
is that's one hundred million dollars less. Yes, I have
never heard of a player turning down one hundred million.
That's you know, that is so astronomical. That's that's now

(01:59:24):
that Brunson rule is taking serious cash less than what
your value is. So some guys do do it. It happens,
but it's very rare. By the way, one more thing,
and I don't mean it to segue from baseball, because
we were honoring trade Cabage. A listener of ours sent

(01:59:46):
us a tweet that basically said, if things go south
in Milwaukee, and that Yannis asked for a trade. According
to one website, which again they're just creating odds just
to create them. Yes, that Jannis the Gumpo would have
a list of five teams on his list that would
be the favorites to try to trade for him, and

(02:00:10):
the fourth most popular bet on the board would be
your beloved Houston rocketsh just throwing that out there. Milwaukee,
by the way, the worst record in the Eastern Conference
right now at one and five, very small sample size,

(02:00:30):
A long way to go, A long way to go,
long way to go. How do you have Dame Lillard
and Yannis and Brook Lopez and I is everybody not playing?
Is everybody playing on that team? I don't know what
it is. They're in last place in the Eastern Conference.
You know who's in second and last place? Go ahead,
the Philadelphia seventy six ers. They're both behind the pistons. Yeah.

(02:00:51):
By the ways, you said join and be fought with
a reporter in Philadelphia. Oh yeah, you know what. I
meant to send you that story on our sheet, but
I forgot that was well, we got twelve seconds go
ahead that report when my first reaction was, oh my gosh,
what is wrong with Joel Embiid? But then it turned
out that guy in an article invoked his dead brother
to call Joel Embiid lazy? Uh uh yeah, yeah, Okay,

(02:01:13):
you know what'll get your ass kicked. He should have
gotten his head. He'slucky he only got shoved. Yeah, you
should get your ass beat. All right, let's play Believe
it or not next seven one three two one two

Speaker 1 (02:05:06):
Quincy Jones allowed Mike Myers to use his song sol
Basa Nova as the Austin Power theme in exchange for
a short cameo in the film Believe It or Not
Believe It No Rossmandata. That was nice trying the good questions.

It or Not?

Speaker 4 (02:05:26):

for his next record producer, and Jones offered his services.
