Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross one Age Town.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Good morning, Welcome to a Tuesday edition of The Matt
Thomas Show at Ross. This is Sports Talk seven night.
(00:37):
I mean, we were just talking yesterday about Media Day
being next Monday, which we'll still be there. Obviously. I'm
still very excited. Fred van Vliet won't. They're not gonna
wheel him in. No, Fred will be bandaged up, yeah,
and going into hiding. What is Matt's You know, I
(00:58):
have a problem in my life. I deep syle a
lot in my life. People tend to think it's something
because it's bad, and I just sometimes I just ad
Matt well, I probably suld stopped doing it because everybody says, well,
what's the matter with you?
Speaker 3 (01:09):
That?
Speaker 2 (01:09):
Right, there was a legitimate deep sia on it's in
your subconscious. Then maybe mattis are not good. Well. At
the end of the day, we deep side because the
Astros got swept, correct, the Texans are on three and
then will not win the AMC South. Fred van Vliet
has gone down with an ACL injury. I mean, can
(01:30):
I say the heart and soul the rockets. So here's
the strange thing about Fred van Vliet. There was a
lot of Fred van Vliet haters over the course of
the year because he is a streaky shooter. He never
was a peer shooter. He was a streaky I'm just
gonna say, kids who don't know ball, I'm saying it,
what's up. He is one thing I've learned about em
A Dooka in the two years that I've called the games.
(01:52):
He values his point guard for so much more than
just dribbling into basketball exactly exactly, and it's about on
core awareness. It's about general ship, putting the team in motion,
the occasional three and sometimes Fred let me tell you, Fred,
in that Golden State series, for the most part I
remember being just amazing. I don't remember it was if
it was every single game and they made a couple
(02:14):
of goal games here and there. He was like their
best player in the playoffs. Men Thomson a good couple
games late, but he was bad early. Yeah, we know
the Jalalin was only good for one that's now he's
wearing sun scar. But that's another here nor there. Point
being is this.
Speaker 4 (02:26):
Uh, good coaches value really really strong floor general leader
or whatever you want to say it point guards.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
And the Rockets lost theirs. Doesn't mean the season is over.
It doesn't mean there are there opportunities for other guys
to step up. But not only did Fred Ross do
a great job of being your on floor leader, he
also put a boatload of minutes for you. He was
a thirty five minute a night guy for the most part,
and that's a lot to ask for any to replace
(03:00):
thirty five minutes of generally speaking, excellent basketball. He was
a good defender, despite the fact he was getting a
little bit older in age. He just knew the passing lanes.
He didn't take any guf from anybody. So this rockets
backcourt and I'm obviously men still a part of it,
but it had a lot of moxy to it when
you had Dylan and Fred and Amen, you've lost two
(03:25):
parts of that. Not necessarily beating in the chest, but
I mean, come at me, let's go. I'm ready for you.
What do you want to throw at me? That's tough.
Forty one and nineteen with Fred van Vliet, eleven and
eleven without him, I mean, that's that's basically where I
would go with that. Basically a fifty six win pace
with him, a forty one win pace without him. That's
(03:46):
where they were last year. He is I will say
heart and soul of this Rockets, as you said, and
the buddy, you can't look at the box score and
know what Fred van Vliet was bringing getting them into
their offense being part of that, that new attitude era
of Houston Rockets basketball where we're not gonna take anything
from anybody. Big part of that was Fred van Vliet
and this and Alprin Shinguen can grow and get better.
(04:10):
A men Thompson can grow and get better. Same thing
for re Eed Shepherd. That's what you're gonna need now
with him. Because also of note is the Rockets are
basically hard cap. They cannot shuffle around and add a
veteran guy. They're gonna have to make a trade if
they want to go with the point guards. So it's
gonna look like, at least at the start of the season,
they're gonna rely on what a men Thompson and re
(04:30):
Shepherd can bring. Yeah, I don't even know what kind
of shuffling they can do. The NBA salary cap is
as much is probably the most difficult thing to discuss.
You need a PhD to know what the heck's going on.
In that thing, there are aprons and there are exceptions.
I'm not gonna get that ends because it's boring, it's convoluted,
and it's hard to explain. Yeah, the reality is, again,
(04:53):
if you take anybody that you do trust when it
talks about the NBA, the Rockets, short of a trade,
zero flexibility in this situation. Correct, So I understand, So
you could make a trade. I mean, Russell Westbrook is
still a free agent. I don't know what you could
(05:15):
do if you. I mean, I don't even think you
could bring him in a minimum. I don't think they're
in a situation they could. So, yeah, this is a
roster that's gonna have to rely on what's here. Now.
You can't do a signing trade with like a new guy, right,
There's been no way. I don't think you know what.
I can't. I can't answer that, and I refuse to
give you an answer because I'm probably be wrong. Thank you.
(05:38):
But here's the thing. Uh, you've got a you got
a deep basketball team. You had a deep basketball team
that was super deep when you had Fred van Vliet.
Now it's on his deep and you have to replace
those minutes. That means and then Thompson's gonna take the
next step in his development. That means that, uh, reed Shepherd.
I mean, if the pressure wasn't already significantly higher this
(05:59):
year on him than it was last year, it's probably
even ramped up a little bit more because of that.
He's got a chance to prevent maybe be the starting
point guard of the team. Who knows, you could go
him and Thompson, You could go Aaron Holliday if you
want to. I don't know if Aaron Holliday is a
thirty minute player for you as a point guard, probably not,
shouldn't be, how about that? Ideally? Yeah, but again if
(06:20):
you Mayodoka offense does not rely on the point guard
to score with so many different options. But you're looking again,
like I said before, Rossill, you're looking for that floor general,
that floor leader in Aaron Holliday, veteran guy, competitive as hell,
but you've got younger people behind him that you would
think could probably take that over if indeed, Reed Shepherd
does take that next step. But yeah, this is not
(06:45):
exactly what I was wanting to think about opening up
the Tuesday show, and we ended the program yesterday at
two o'clock. Was way off the Bingo card way off. Yeah,
so we will get to a little bit more of that.
It's a show. There really isn't a whole lot's sake
except sorry, Fred, right, I mean, I don't you know, Yeah,
these things happen. I'm sorry, Fred, I'm sorry to me.
(07:06):
I'm sorry to me too, because I like Fred. Houston
sports is losing. I went on for my fantasy leagues.
Oh yeah, you lost. Manchester City gave up a draw
in the ninety second minute. I'm having a bad sports week, Matt.
I lost Rams plus three and a half. Yes, you did,
not going great? Yeah I lost. Fred doesn't know my name,
and that's okay. But Fred always cared about where I
(07:28):
was broadcasting from. When he would do the postgame interviews,
he'd say, where you at? It was very nice. Let's
consider it. I mean, at least he didn't care. I
meant least he did. It's like, no, I'm not doing it.
Would always come out with me. So that's good. Yeah.
So if you're a reed Shepherd fan ruthheard, Yes, Dorian
Finnie Smith, I mean if you move him in at
the point, you could move Dorian Finnie to the two.
(07:49):
And again, I don't know we'll find out more information
obviously next Monday Rockets Media Day. My assumption is Rossy
that the Rockets will remain very silent about this as
they mull this over. They uh, yeah, they have some
things to figure out. And I mean, injuries happen, it sucks,
but to have it, I mean, it's just it's like
(08:12):
spoil It's like spoiling a welcome party for Kevin Durant,
is what it feels. Well, it's it's it's a little
I mean, clearly it's a buzzkill. Yes, because you were
looking at this veteran, been there, done their lineup. You
got this guy that can lead you just give the
ball to Kevin Durant, put in the right spot, make
your occasional three when necessary, you need a game off
(08:33):
because you know, you played a lot of ments the
night before. Maybe or maybe Fred's minutes would have gone
diminished a little bit because of the of the added
depth to the lineup. There wasn't a pressure to play
thirty five minutes a game. So I'm gonna keep an
eye on Kevin Durant. Bubble wrap. Yes, that sounds good. Yeah,
I mean, I again, who knows what happened? How it
went down. Uh, it doesn't really matter at this point.
(08:56):
But they could be any I mean any you can
do that, running drills, working out whatever they're doing right right,
all right, So that's a great way to open up
the program today is little Fred van Vliet, the spotlight
on what could have been for twenty twenty five, twenty six,
not how I wanted to talk rockets the end of September. No,
I don't disagree with you on that. All right, we
have the Astros opening up. I mean, this is it,
(09:18):
letting me to go Kenny Loggins on you.
Speaker 5 (09:20):
This is it.
Speaker 2 (09:21):
You're gonna do that later, maybe tomorrow when they win
opening song tomorrow. Any songs about Sacramento, No, you do
a little California dreaming. There's a lot of songs about California,
there is, but I always feel like when I hear
California dream I'm thinking about southern California. Okay, there's only
really one song about northern California that I can think
(09:43):
of if you're going to San Francisco. But we're not
going to San Francisco. We're going to Sacramento. So what
about the North cal Blues? Who sings that jig? Tom Thompson. Tom,
that's okay. We'll have to check the Billboard top one
hundred on that.
Speaker 6 (09:58):
All right.
Speaker 2 (09:59):
We got Joe Spot at twelve thirty. Before that, we've
got Gout Feelings at eleven thirty. The NFL rewinded one
twenty and I got to tell you something. I was
pissed off watching the Detroit Baltimore game yesterday. You'll tell
us why after you tell us about something else too,
(10:22):
What album ten twenty one on the Matt Thomas Show,
A ross, I would say this show is about ninety
nine percent sports, right, one percent non stuff. That'd be
a fair comp.
Speaker 3 (10:35):
On that.
Speaker 2 (10:37):
Ninety one. All right, maybe not on this show. Let
me go as a producer, maybe maybe maybe seventy five.
All right, listen to me. This is very carefully both
of you, and we're going back to sports in a seconds.
I want to talk about Detroit and Baltimore for last night. Okay,
So I wouldn't check Facebook just for real quick. Oh no,
See that was your first mistake, and that is a mistake.
There is a page called true Stories, which I do
(11:01):
not follow, but you know they throw things on there
thinking that you may be interesting in them, and clearly
you're interested because you're reading it on air and they win,
and I read these I look at these things like
that's not very interesting to me. But this one was
so interesting to me that I'm going to read you
a little bit of it. Okay, music, No, No, it's about
Hall and Oates. That's the reason when you play this.
(11:21):
Oh okay, Okay, Darryl Hall is the lead. Yes, he
sings ninety nine percent of the songs. Okay. John Oates
is the writer, does lyrics, does music, and he's the
number two. He's his muse whatever. But he's it's it's
not Oates and Hall, It's it's Hall and Oates. Okay.
John Oates is the black haired guy with the mustache.
(11:42):
Now with the mustache is gone. Here's here's what he
said in this story that made me go, wow, this
is interesting. John Oates once admitted he slept with so
many women in the Hall and Oates Glory years that
he lost count count somewhere past the thousand, and he
even says it nearly at him. How did it nearly
(12:03):
destroy him? Oates? Oates leaned in the chaos backstage groupies,
endless lines of coke, champagne, and hotel, carpets, knights that
blurred into weeks. He letters said it felt living in
a bubble of excess where normal life didn't exist. The
wildest part. Oates doesn't even remember signing some of the
contracts that lost him millions of dollars. He was too high,
(12:25):
too distracted, too busy chasing the next thrill. At one
point he had to sell off his cars. His guitar
is at Aspen home, just to climb out of the
debt he's racked up. Now this was many years ago.
Now he's in a much better spot. But I was
just blown away by the fact that John Oates, who
isn't really even the main guy in Haul of the
Oates says he lost count somewhere past a thousand. Now
(12:52):
was he talking about these contracts? Was he and Daryl Hall?
Is that why they were feuding? Ohio? Contracts going back
forty years when they were stars. Now they have been
feuding in don't speak to each other anymore. It's been resolved,
don't They're not suing each other anymore. But I just
that's just my daily edition of Matt What did you
do looking at Facebook page during the break? And that's
what I found is that John Oates got a lot
of loving back in the day. This is surprising you.
(13:15):
Everything I just heard about cocaine, sex, and champagne doesn't
surprise me at all. It's nineteen eighties, so I guess
the question would be if John and Paul got most
of it back in the Beatles days, that George and
Ringo probably also did their fair share as well. Yeah,
they were crushing it. What do you mean? Yeah, but
I did not anticipate John Oates being in the thousand
(13:37):
Sex thousand Sex Club. Yeah, it's like this guy won't
shut up about his octopus's garden. Can we can we
go good with you?
Speaker 3 (13:44):
John?
Speaker 2 (13:45):
Exactly? All right? Back to sports, I said, bring up,
but I'm sorry. I just sometimes I just saw something
I was like, this is weird. All right, So I'm
watching the chart in Baltimore yesterday. I had fantasy players
on both sides, which kept me in the game all
the way to the very last. I think I won
by a point and a half. So the Torols are Wow,
Torells are all to a three and oh start. Thank
(14:06):
you very much. You're welcome for gifting you Jamier Gibbs,
Thank you very much. Did you get your three and
a half on the catches in the first half. Oh, congratulations,
it's good for you. Yeah, I need you to mail
in that ticket. I will be happy to all right. So,
first of all, the game was excellent, high scoring, it
paced while the thing the game was over like in
three hours. I mean the game. You know those games
(14:27):
on start till seven fifteen, seven twenty, So it was
not like it was dragging. Out of the ten forty five.
It had Lamar Jackson some supremacy. Detroit just played better
and deserved to win the football game. Baltimore made somewhat
of a late comeback, but it was too little, too late,
and they and the Lions won the game. Two things
came to mind. One, Lamar was good but not great.
(14:51):
And I know you have been very team Lamar of
the last couple of years. I think you've picked the
Ravens to go to the super Bowl the last couple
of years, or at least you have done. In the play.
They were the odds on favorites start the season, so
I pretty much went shock, which I didn't realize. He
runs into some He tries to keep plays alive almost
too long. Ross it works out. For him a lot.
It does fun, but when it doesn't work out, it's bad.
(15:13):
It's bad. That was number one thing. The number two
thing I thought was there was some massive innovation on
both teams with the offense in terms of double pitchbacks,
half back tosses. Now, Derrick Henry shouldn't be doing it,
but there were there were big stones fourth down completion
plays late in the game by Detroit. I'm going to
(15:36):
tell you something, Texans fans, you can find bright, innovative
minds to run offenses in the NFL, and they don't
have to have Patriot ties or Nick Cassario ties because
it feels like that Stereo disagrees. Well, it's fine, but
it's gonna ultimately really cost him in the end. It
(15:58):
was an entertaining game that had great athletes. Now I
remember now these teams are also have many more targets.
Detroit's got a one two running bag punch between David
Montgomery and Jamior Gibbs that the Texans would die for
one of them, much less getting both of them. It
also gave me the assumption that the Texans are nowhere
(16:19):
close to those elite teams. They're just not so when
you always want me to be a fan. It's just easier.
It's easier to say, you know what, They're just so
much better that at some point, when the Texans do
get away from the being the Patriot way, maybe I'll
become a fan. Because Detroit lost its coordinators ROSSI did
they not? Yes, they did, and they were doing both
(16:41):
of them, and they were dialing up some amazing things yesterday,
and I was very very impressed with Detroit. I was
impressed with Baltimore as well, but I was more impressed
with Detroit to going out on the road on a
Monday night and winning that football game. The Texans are
so far away from that that we're just running in.
So we're in the hamster in that wheel that's going nowhere.
(17:04):
Uh yeah, both of those players, both of those teams
have much better players they do than the Texans have
on their offense. Both of those teams. But it's not
because the Texans have lost players because of free agency.
It's because of hurt players largely mixing hurts Tank doll
and being gone hurts and the offensive line not paying
(17:29):
attention to that for a long time hurts. If we
rank those teams, if we rank these teams. The Texans
are third in the offensive line, they're third at pass catcher,
and they're third in the running game, and their third
right now, they're third quarterback. So yeah, it's it's to me.
(17:52):
I'm not saying I've seen a bunch of lot of
you know, creative stuff from Nick Kley and he's blown
me away. But you look like a smarter offensive coordinator
when you have but when you have players who who execute,
Like if they're doing all these crazy pitchbacks and stuff
like doing the Lions, they're probably getting blown up because
Titus Howard is getting blown up or whoever else in
(18:12):
the uh says Lake and Tomlinson is whiffing on his
blocks and there's a d tackle on the back, and
then you say, what are they doing? They're getting too cute.
They just they just suck everywhere. They're just not good.
They're just not good. The offense is horrible basically at
every level. And that's Nick Kyley too. I'm not trying
to necessarily shore up for him. I'm just saying he'll
look a lot smarter your offensive Bobby Sloan look like
(18:35):
a genius his first year because they had good players
and they played well, and Joe Mixon was healthy, and
and Larimie Tunsall and whoever else in the offensive line
was better. Titus Howard now looks just over the hill,
and he was better three years ago now at this point,
and again it's malpractice. Yes, the Texans did not attack
(18:55):
the offensive line. Yeah, and you know, Damiko Ryan says
they're close, and I say, in the NFL, you're always close.
It's always a handful of plays. But as you you said,
as far as I mean everything on the field last night,
you are correct to say it doesn't look like they're close.
It doesn't look like they are from from the Lions
(19:16):
and the Ravens. No, and those are the teams that
are looking to win a Super Bowl, and that's where
they're on the chase, as are the Texans. If you
are in the year three of who is supposed to
be your franchise quarterback and year three of your new
head coach, this is supposed to be a breakout year.
This is supposed to be where you're supposed to make
that leap. And it ain't happened. They're a leap. They're
(19:36):
they're doing the exact opposite. They're zero and three and
looking progressively worse every week against weaker competition every week.
Good time of be a Houston sports fan ten thirty
Sports Talk seven ninety seven one three two one two
five seven ninety seven one three two one two five
(19:56):
seven ninety is that when if we're in a blea
moment right now, what was our last triple bleak? It
feels like we've had some in Houston. I think it
was around like Deshaun Watson was begging for a trade
and then got his slap with twenty five lawsuits. Yeah,
Rockets were in the midst of a rebel. We were
reading affidavits that said digital stimulation on them. That was
(20:19):
not fun times and how the Houstonian had to be
involved with the different tables and chairs and rooms, towels
and gyrations. It's not good time. A lot of tow
We did way too much towel talk. It was. It
was tough. He brought his own towel. We in sports
radio went to WIN Sports Radio one on one that
they said you don't need to bring a towel conversation
(20:39):
unlesson involves as Shaun Watson. The missius said he brought
his own towel and that was a red flag. Yess
it was espescially was the size of a washcloth. All right,
seven one three two one two five seven dot seven
one three two one two five seven ninety two. All right.
So Ross and I during the break actually more just
me talking out loud, and Ross is like, don't do
this to yourself, and I'm like, oh yeah, we are
(21:01):
trying to figure out who we're supposed to be rooting
for this week now. Ultimately, the number one thing is
if the Astros they go six and oh, there, I'm
going to guarantee they're in. Okay, I'm just gonna say
that they if they go six and oh, it's a
guaranteed wild card. Okay, uh huh. I think probably five
(21:24):
and one gets them in. Four and two. I cannot
guarantee three and three would make me just profoundly sad,
and you know, and then a losing road trip would
just be the end of the season. I really think
five and one in six and oh guarantee it. Four
and two could be certainly very iffy. So right now
you have the you've got four teams fighting for three spots.
(21:51):
I think the Yankees are definitely in as a wild card. Okay,
the red Sox, the Guardians, the Astros, and the Tigers
are fighting for those last three. The Tigers and the
Guardians are competing for the American League Central. They play
each other mono a mono for the next three days.
You have the Red Sox, who are trying to stay
(22:14):
alive and keep their wild card. They are playing obviously
the last six games, and their schemes are against the
oh They're at Toronto, who doesn't have to play for
anything except they want to win the American League East
because their leader of the Yankees is two so they
don't need as much help. They ne just need to
win something this week. So I'm not going to explain
(22:37):
this to you again because I think I've lost ninety
percent of the audience confused. I wanted to ask you
to start over, but I also want to keep our listeners. No, no,
I want to apologize for the last forty seconds. Okay,
all I will say is this The good part of
this is everybody is playing everybody, with exception of the Mariners.
The Mariners are playing the Rockies. Everybody else has something
(22:59):
to fight for against teams that are also f overok
win one game over the weekend, one game, Yeah, and
then like we could have a sliver of hope. Yeah,
came in and took your lunch and took your lady. Yeah,
and laid her down sweetly in front of you. Yeah,
put perfume on you too, said this is how she
smelled when I was making sweet love to her. HM,
I thought you okay, yeah, let's go, let's go a
(23:21):
different direction. I'm done. I got a cliff that you
don't have to. So I want all of you to
think about this for the next what his first pitch
tonight nine o five, Think about this for the next
nine hours at least. Okay, five and one week four
(23:42):
and two should be good enough, should be No, No,
we do have to think about anything. Go win the games.
Because I was thinking about two out of three over
the weekend, and well, guess what they got sweat. It didn't
matter what we're thinking about. It matters what they go
out and do. Go out there and win the games.
So frustrating, and he asks, yes, when look, when this
(24:02):
is all said and done, even if they continue to
collapse and miss the playoffs, the injuries, we will point
back to it and it will be valid. It will
be a valid excuse to most reasonably thinking Astro. However, however, Astros,
Twitter is going to bring their pitchforks out. Yeah, well,
and you should be better than the A's and the Angels.
That's that's just a fact. Yeah, you are better than
(24:24):
the A's and the angel So go prove it. Because
I'll say this, if they don't win this week, it
will be on them because even with this Hodgepodge lineup
they have, they're better than those two teams, right, they
just are. Yes, this will be a fundamental fail. If
the Astros do not make the playoffs, then in that
(24:44):
weird thinking about this for a second, the baseball season
is twenty six weeks, give or take twenty five of
these weeks were like, man, the Astros, they've gone through
so many injuries and so much despair, and they're competitive
and it's fun and it's interesting. Here we are, ROSSI
in week twenty six, and if they don't make the playoffs,
(25:05):
it'll be totally their fault. Yes, that's that's not how
sports was supposed to work. Well, it's it's it's laid
out in front of them. They shouldn't even be here, honestly,
but you see my point. The A the A's and
the Angels are terrible. Yes, and even though the games
A has been playing better, they got some talent. What's
(25:27):
their records they are They have seventy three wins. You
have eighty four, so they're you know what, there's seventy
three eighty three, it's four sixty eight ball. The Angels
are seventy and eighty six. First of all, going to
play in Sacramento means nothing. There's no fans there. This
is this is not a home field advantage for either
one of the two teams the askers are about to play.
(25:49):
I will tell you Christian Javier is a flyball pitcher,
and the ball flies out of there. That's not again,
and you're not You're not giving me hope here. I'm
really mad at you. And that's fine. We can get
past that ball flies out of there in Sacramento for
our fly ball pitcher, Christian Xavier. Because I was thinking
about that was because the odds they have minus one
ten apiece. They have it as even Vegas, So it
(26:10):
was like what what? And then I thought about it, Oh,
I don't even want to add what you want to
guess what the total is? Who are they throwing Javier
versus Jeffrey Springs, who has a four point one seven
ERA over under is well ten and a half. Oh well,
I'm usually not break out that cat. That's pretty high
(26:31):
for a baseball game, folks. It is Sacramento, though, That's
what I'm saying. I'm a little worried. Can Xavier learn
Frommer's curveball and throw it correctly? Five and one? This week?
Your squad's going to the playoffs. Just think about that
for a minute. Okay, ten forty four The Matt Thomas
Show with Ross seven to one, three two one to
I know I believe that because you're gonna have to
Trent and Cleveland beating each other up, and then you're
(26:54):
gonna have Toronto and the Red Sox beating way to
win your games. And we'll go from there. That's right, Yes,
one three two one two five seven ninety seven one
three two one two five seven Nintie the Matt Thomas
Shield Ross, we have gut feelings at eleven thirty, Joe
Spot at twelve thirty, NFL rewant today coming up at
one twenty as uh, We're we gonna play all those
(27:15):
special teams touchdowns, every single one, even the one that
hurts you, that costs you, that cost us some more
than others. You're gonna maybe throw up. Now you can't
do that, tes Jameer Gibbs, got it, got me. Then
he did ten forty five on Sports Talk seven ninety
ten fifty Matt and Ross with you here gut feelings
at eleven thirty. We're gonna take your phone calls up
until then, Joe Spot. At twelve thirty something, I found
(27:41):
out they're the games are in West Sacramento, and I
thought to myself, when somebody says, wes something, you think
it's like suburbs. I'm like, I asked Buddy Man, I
said to the NBA League meetings, I said, how far
is West Sacramento from downtown? He goes, that's about a
couple hundred feet. They're like, you could walk from your
hotel in downtown, so it's like a couple of blocks west.
(28:01):
It literally. I was like, wow, I felt dumb because
like South Houston, right, South Houston's past Hobby Airport. That's
South Houston, isn't uh you know on uhline? Yeah, Caroln Hailton,
it's not there. That's funny. Selia. I was like, oh, damn,
it's a smaller town. Because I thought, Man, this must
be a McConnell hall for the people. Say I want
(28:23):
to go down to West Sacramento. That's when you when
you go to a small Texas town they call it
historic downtown and you go there and you're like, wait,
what it's like two blocks? Yeah, that's right, that's right.
Seven one three two one two five, seven ninety. It
is about Thomas shild Its matter of fact, Ross. Next year,
I'm going to when I get Sacramento all later this year,
I'm gonna go to West Sacrameto to take a picture
of the ballpark and say I was there, I was there.
(28:44):
Seven one three two one two five, seven ninety. Let's
talk to the great people. Houston will start with Mark
and umble all about Thomas Shold Ross. Mark, thank you
for holding in. Good morning Mark. Okay, let's play. What
is he doing? It sounds like he's sorry, marky Mark,
(29:09):
are my fault?
Speaker 7 (29:11):
No?
Speaker 8 (29:15):
Your ask Those in Texans might be.
Speaker 2 (29:16):
Though, success Are you the last? Are you in the last?
Speaker 8 (29:24):
Y'all walked into that. Y'all walked into that. You I
have real question, real question? Now do you all right?
Two things y'all may have talked about it before. I
don't even know, but check it out. Do you agree
with Peretis being in the first of all, playing in
the series of that Magnitude having he didn't even play
in You know, at least you oughta played in Sugarland.
(29:47):
He didn't even play, So I don't know about rhythm
and all of that. I wanted to get your comments
to see if you even agreed with him playing in
the series of that Magnitude or and and secondly, if
he plays White Batam and three flot that's one two.
Do you have the courage to not bank Christian Walker
in the series? I never understand why they keep pushing
(30:10):
him up in the lineup they signed.
Speaker 2 (30:13):
They sign up for Karatini on Saturday. Yeah, two things, Mark, Mark,
he didn't play Saturday.
Speaker 8 (30:17):
Hold on a regular basis, No regular we got.
Speaker 2 (30:19):
We're down in six games. I mean there's number regular
to it. No, no, no, number two, Hold on, hold,
hold hold on number two, Go go go number two. Uh,
your man print is at a home run on Sunday.
What I mean that means play him clearly?
Speaker 1 (30:37):
Yeah?
Speaker 8 (30:38):
And okay, okay, I'll grant you. I'll grant you one two?
Do you agree with him being in the three slot?
Speaker 9 (30:45):
You know what?
Speaker 2 (30:45):
At this point, MAT's come back, Mark, I don't want
to two up there. Look, I don't know murderers Row.
I can't answer that until I know about Jeremy Paine.
We're gonna an updated twelve thirty by how Jeremy Payne
is feeling ahead of? This is who he was a
head of in the lineup on Sunday, Haesus Sanchez, Christian Walker,
Yaner Diaz, Jake Meyer, Zach Cole, Dubon. Who do you
(31:06):
want getting more plate appearances? I rolled the dice with
a Paradis and he got a home run that day. Yeah.
Speaker 8 (31:14):
Hello, I'm saying that day, bro, I'm talking about Friday
and Saturday.
Speaker 2 (31:17):
When when were Friday?
Speaker 8 (31:20):
Al two day?
Speaker 2 (31:21):
Okay, Friday? This is who was out?
Speaker 10 (31:23):
He was this?
Speaker 2 (31:23):
Who was behind uh Paradis on Friday Al two? A
Oh for four, Zach Cole oh for four, Christian Walker
oh for three, Das Oh for three, Hazus Sanchez over three,
Jake Myers one for three, one hit behind.
Speaker 8 (31:36):
You got so y'all, y'all are saying, what's to use it?
Speaker 2 (31:39):
I'm saying shuffle however you want. Hey, Mark, are you
a wrestling fan? You know who the rock is?
Speaker 6 (31:46):
Yes?
Speaker 3 (31:47):
I do?
Speaker 2 (31:47):
You know what he says, don't you. It doesn't matter
what he says. It doesn't matter what the lineup is.
It doesn't matter. He was your best hitter on Friday.
They had three hits. He got one of the hits
in a walk. They had one walk the whole game
each Pretis drew it and three hits. He had one
of those. He was your best hitter. Get back on trade, Mark,
(32:09):
get on on the train to Georgia Dons.
Speaker 8 (32:12):
All right, all right, let go, let's go. Look, I
got you on all that?
Speaker 2 (32:15):
All right?
Speaker 8 (32:16):
Good d is coming off of the series he came
off of. Did he not warrant being up in the
line up as opposed to y'all got what I'm saying,
I got you At the end of the day, I'm
talking about going into Friday in context, I feel like
Ardez would have been better. I'm I'm really looking at it.
Speaker 2 (32:34):
I know you're trying to find something. It felt like
to me, And thank you for the everybody struggling. Everybody
everybody hurts. Yeah, as my good friends Ariann would say,
sometimes I mean, I appreciate the retro. Look at the lineup. Yeah,
oh look and Derry, Yeah, we keep talking about this.
(32:55):
This guy shouldn't be Josel two is not a cleanup hitter. Yeah,
and Derry, if you guess what if he you crossed
him across the line and the other dugout, he's hitting
like eighth or ninth, and that's the settle lineup. But
guess what he plays for Houston. So I agree, Jos
al Tuve is not a cleanup hitter. Easta paratus off
of a ham with his hamstring off his bone is
(33:16):
not a three hitter. But in this lineup he is. Yeah,
this is not a major league championship lineup. Then there's
too much, too much sugar line, I mean Zach, And
then there's there's Walker who's been terrible. Yeah, Diaz has
been underperforming, Hayser Sanchez has been an abomination since basically
(33:37):
his first game. And you can't by the way you
throw a left hand or you've lost him for the game. Yeah,
I mean Cam Smith. It quite frankly, he's ran out
of gas for like two months and it's just then
it's whoever else Dubon and you know Jake Myers, and
Jake's been getting some hits since he come back. But again,
there's no punch. He's not he's not prime Mike Trout. Okay,
he's just not. Yeah, exactly, let's laugh, so we don't cry. Man,
(34:05):
We're coming back with it. We'll come back with an
r EM song. We're just gonna do it.
Speaker 1 (34:09):
Is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
Speaker 2 (34:17):
Seven ninety Matt Thomas Show, Rossquertoire. But it it just
kind of fits, you know what. It's gonna feel better
because the Astros are gonna go five and one. Shut up,
They're gonna go five to one this week. I'm gonna
ask you this, say it into your existence Astros five
(34:38):
and one, Manifest Astros five and one, because don't you
think and look, I make very few good points on
the show, but isn't my point valid here? You twenty
five weeks of man, you are gritty fighting it out,
and then if you don't make the playoffs, set to
playing the Eights and Angels hurt. It's gonna really hurt
because you even you play all this year just to
(35:01):
get to this point to play though I've been talking
about these last years games for two months now, Rossi,
It's like you play all year and you win the
AC South and you win the wild Card and you're
riding hind and you lose division and this season's over
and you feel like it was a failure. Yeah, that's
why I'm not a fan of theirs. I feel cleansed.
The probably is happy unless you win it. All right,
it's all about when are you? First of all, it's
(35:22):
when do you When do you decide you are not
happy with the result of the season Rockies fans is
about March thirty second before the Loft spring training. Yeah,
turn it up, Astros fans. Yeah, A's fans checked out
about April a fans checked out when they's like two
(35:43):
years ago. Actually, you're moving to Sacramento, West Sacramento. Don't confuse.
So when do we You always are disappointed at the
end of the season, unless you win. It's about when
does it come? Hopefully not in the next six days.
Speak it, say it, believe it. Five and one. Matter
of fact, let's get some T shirts made. Five and one.
(36:03):
That seems I mean by the time you get those
to press, Yeah, you're right, they're gonna be ohe two
just kidding, ha ha, you don't know any joke. You
can't be kidding. You could be very true.
Speaker 11 (36:15):
I hope not.
Speaker 2 (36:18):
All right, let's go to the phones. Okay, Well that
song makes you just want to just forget about life
for a few days. By the way, I got I
got some silver linings for you. I was talking about
Christian Harvier being a big fly ball pitcher historically, yes,
but this year so far, no, he's been more of
a ground ball guy. So you're saying there's a chance
or it's short sample sizes. I was gonna say he's
(36:40):
pitched like five times. Yeah, very short sample size. He's
changed up the repertoire though, right. Steven Huffman on seven NINTI, Steve,
thank you for wedding ed good morning.
Speaker 12 (36:50):
Good warning man.
Speaker 3 (36:51):
By the way, I just drove down King went drive.
Speaker 13 (36:54):
I picked up a couple of Seattle Mariner home run balls.
Speaker 12 (36:57):
Oh, come on, Steve, I got I like your prediction
of five and one or six and oho if two
things happen. Number one, don't pitch to Nick Kurtz.
Speaker 11 (37:13):
What was he hitting about seven fifty against us?
Speaker 12 (37:16):
And uh, trying to find a way to get Alvarez
to play baseball.
Speaker 3 (37:21):
This week.
Speaker 2 (37:23):
Well, it sounds like if it happens at all, it's
going to be in Anaheim. They are that he did
not go to Sacramento, So if there's any chance he plays,
it's going to be in against the Angels. But man,
what are you looking at me? If his ankle is it,
I mean, it can't be in one hundred percent, it's
probably jacked up and injecting with all sorts of things.
I mean, Jesus, we're just I'm not counting on Alvarez.
(37:45):
I'm counting on the guys that are putting the uniforms
on that can actually walk well, except Walker. That's true,
that's true. Thank you Steve for the phone call. By
the way, Nick Kurtz, Yeah, what about Nick Kurts Just
he's very good. He's very good. He's like for a rookie.
(38:08):
He's climbing up the Astro Killer ranks. You see he
goes go ahead? Yeah, is he astro Killer won this week?
Mike Trout. No, Mike Trout has been owned by Astro's pitching.
I mean mostly when Mike, when Mike Trot's not going
the Hall of Fame. But what I don't think so,
Mike Trout, I don't know. I don't think. I don't
(38:29):
think it's a fourgrone conclusion. He's not going to the
Baseball Hall of Fame. Four he got four. He got
four hundred home runs. But don't you let me let
me rephrase you sure, let me help you out? Are
you sure you going Hall of Fame? Okay? Is he
getting the first ballot? Matt he's got like four m vps.
I can't remember when's lost and he got one. I
(38:50):
think the only guy with more MVPs than him is
like Barry Mobs. Okay, then you know, then I'll take
a step back. Oh okay, hold on, sorry, only three MVPs.
He's going to the Hall. Okay, eleven time All Star, three time. Okay,
forget what I said for home runs, career ops nine
seventy five. Okay, forget what I say is that is
the third worst baseball take you over here in the show,
(39:11):
in the history of the show, Good Things Gonna call
you missed the MLB? Oh my god, you got that
right now. The worst take of all time is Michael
Brantley was better than Mike Trout. That was the worst.
Second one was that Ken Griffy should not be a
first ballot Hall of Famer. That popped into my mind
when you just said what you said. Yeah, first of all,
Mike Trout's not done. I know he's. Hey, he's up
to one hundred twenty five games this year. That's that's
(39:32):
a mountain for him. So you know what, and I
and I should have gone back to the earlier years.
But it feels like to me ross the last five
or six years, he just doesn't play. He hasn't racked up. Yeah,
this is his game games played well. Twenty twenty was
COVID shortened, but since then twenty one on, thirty six one,
nineteen eighty two, twenty nine five. Okay, so this year's
(39:54):
actually but yeah, so he's gonna be one hundred, He's
gonna be close one hundred and thirty this year. Yeah,
he's been breaking down. Okay, so I should let me
I'll rephrase. He has not been playing a Hall of
Fame player the last five years. Yes, first six or
seven he was, he was the best dynamic. Oh, he
was one of the best players. He was on track
to be like the best player ever. In reality is
a lot of it is because the angel has been
so bad that he's so out of sight, out of mind.
(40:15):
He That's the thing, though, if the Angels were any good,
he probably won four or five MVPs. He he led
the He led baseball in War five seasons and won
the MVP three times. If the Angels were like ripping
off ninety five wins those years, he'd probably had five MVPs.
He's sitting there going, I have done all this for
(40:35):
this organization. Yes, and I am never gonna check. I'm
never gonna even know what a ring looks like.
Speaker 7 (40:41):
No.
Speaker 2 (40:43):
All right, let's go to Ron at eleven seven on
seven Hoey, Ron, Good morning, do you Ron?
Speaker 14 (40:51):
I hadn't talked to you and Ross in a long time.
Speaker 2 (40:53):
What's up? Ron?
Speaker 7 (40:54):
I Mitch nothing.
Speaker 14 (40:57):
I mitchil in Vegas about two years ago. Man, y'all
going back in October again.
Speaker 2 (41:01):
Mmm, I'm hoping if the Rockets go the Sad Season Tournament.
Speaker 14 (41:07):
Okay, Yeah, I got I got a couple of thanks
for y'all. Man. Yeah, I'm gonna just kind of listen
for y'all.
Speaker 13 (41:12):
Come in.
Speaker 14 (41:13):
First of all, Man, I'm like a caller like two
callers ago, anybody but Christian Walker in the league in
the Clino spot. Man, I'm tired of that guy.
Speaker 13 (41:23):
I don't care what he leads the team in. I
don't care.
Speaker 14 (41:28):
But uh, and you know, I know I probably wouldn't
do it if I was a coach, But.
Speaker 8 (41:32):
Man, I'm kind of like I'd rather see.
Speaker 14 (41:34):
The bond or quarantine off the bed over that guy. Man,
he's he's gonna hit a home run and he's gonna
strake out and last, but not at least listen to
this man. I'm a I'm a Dialhoad Astro fan, but
I said this about two or three years ago. If
the Astros don't go to the playoff again in my lifetime,
I'm okay with it because for the last like nine
(41:54):
to ten years, many they done did so much, you know,
to inspire me about to ask so uh and what
Caswell fans don't realize what the Astros are doing right now.
You don't see it often. The only team I can
remember doing that is a Landa Braids. I can't remember
the Yankees doing that or even Boston, you know, winning
their division that many years in a row.
Speaker 2 (42:19):
He's a happy man. Thank you, Ron. Good to hear
your voice. Nice to hear from you again. I mean,
I'm happy I've seen two Astra World Series in my lifetime. Yeah,
I mean, this has been a fantastic run. I mean,
I'm I'm pleased to punch. I like them to win more.
Getting the getting the twenty two one was huge. Twenty
two helped because seventeen by itself would have tainted it
(42:41):
been and it's still asterisk field to honestly, it's it's
the right There were the rightful champions. They couldn't cheat
in the playoffs, mostly because the crowds are too loud.
They tried, But here's today's obligatory of twenty seventeen question
for you. Uh oh, if Manford goes to the astrois
and says Bill the beans and they all collectively go, no.
Speaker 6 (43:04):
Suck it.
Speaker 2 (43:05):
Mm hmm. Is he pulling them? Is he pulling the
trophy from them? Is he saying I got enough on
you without having to ask you questions? I don't think so.
No way, no way. You'd had a massive lawsuit on
your hands with Jim Crane plausible deniability. So I guess,
looking back at it, why'd they do it?
Speaker 6 (43:23):
Then?
Speaker 2 (43:24):
They did it because they said there would be no repercussions,
and they knew that everyone they knew, they knew other
teams were doing it, and they figured they wouldn't be
the so the lone soul fall guy and Yankees got
a harshly warded letter. Red Sox got their watches taken away.
Red Sox got Apple watch. That's see, that's the thing.
(43:45):
They're like, Oh, Red Sox got Apple watches. Yankees were
doing this. Colos Beltran brought this from the Yankees. Yeah,
they said they won't be a ripercussions. We'll tell them
what we're doing and whatever. Alex Corey got his job back.
I mean people, Jay Hinch got his job back. Multiple
discussions about the Dodgers as well that never came out.
Mookie Bets cheating two different places. Was the guy Eric
Kratz that said the Brewers were doing it, or the
(44:06):
Rockies or somebody else. So if we could rewind our
life the twenty seventeen should the Astros just said, shut
your bow mass up. You ain't got nothing on us.
You got Mike Fied, you know what you and that
you got your lead witness is a guy that we
left with the playoff roster and we didn't resign the
next year. Bitter bitch, Sorry bye and said they told
the truth and didn't work out. Well, they should never
(44:27):
have done it to begin with. I mean, I'm not
trying to excuse it. Trust me, it's embarrassing. But to
the point, twenty twenty two helps considerably because if I'm
sitting there as an Astro fan bumping around this country
of ours and the only World Series championship they have
is twenty seventeen, no one in the world would give
it any credibility. And in some of that respect of it,
(44:48):
it's not the same. But it's like the Lakers won
the championship in the bubble. People give the Lakers craft
for one in that championship, they they just do this.
That wasn't that, That wasn't a real season. Well, it's
mostly Lebron haters. True. Let's talk to uh Stunner on
The Matt Thomas Show with Ross at eleven eleven. Stunner,
what you got today?
Speaker 3 (45:07):
Hey, what's going on?
Speaker 15 (45:08):
Ross? You know since you since you tell her about
that twenty seventeen. Hey, they just using iPads now in
the in the dugout? Is that kind of similar to
what Astros would have been doing?
Speaker 2 (45:22):
And no, is not.
Speaker 15 (45:25):
It's not they're doing you know, I'm looking at I
pads and they're looking at what what's going on?
Speaker 2 (45:31):
That's hey, that's not looking at signals. They're looking. Yeah,
they're they are in real time. They were signaling in
real time with the banging of the trash can what
was was coming. That's completely different.
Speaker 15 (45:44):
Okay. And my last thing is, man, i used to
be worried by scoring runs. Now I'm just worried about
getting hits. Now I can look at that lineup in
the game and it's over two, over two, over two,
one for full. I'm like, oh my god, we have
to get a hit. I mean, you got guy on
(46:04):
second and third, nobody out and we go up there
and strike out, strike out and ground outs was third base.
Speaker 13 (46:14):
And the next guy then, I mean the next team
do they do the next thing?
Speaker 7 (46:17):
Oh?
Speaker 15 (46:18):
Wing it big it theirs out to the outfield, bring
me in a run, and I'm looking at out team.
It's about injuries.
Speaker 16 (46:24):
It's just execution.
Speaker 13 (46:26):
Somebody gotta connect with the ball.
Speaker 15 (46:28):
That's that's all that guy.
Speaker 2 (46:30):
Man, I'm well, thank you, we're gonna connecting. The Astros
are going to connect with the ball this week. That'd
be great. There's an app Okay, when when Jose Brady
got towards the end of his run, my expectations are
so low. I was like, Okay, if he works like
five six pitches, I'm gonna count this as a win
for his that bat. Yeah, I think Todd kallises a
lot of that. Well, at least the pitching got deep
(46:51):
in the in England. There's an astro in this lineup
that that's where I am with him right now? Can
you guess who it is? Is it Ryan with Christian
talker rhymes with ba zeus manchez hmm. You know he's
getting one eleven in September. He looks like Jordon Alvarez
when he walks to the plate and then he looks
then he plays, he does look like many ord On Alvarez.
(47:11):
You get confused, and then he performs like Casey Kandell
after that. That's old school idea. It's og astro. He's
hitting in the month of September one eleven with an
ops of four thirty one. Cam Smith's like, man, what
I can do better than that? Come on now? And
and this is getting platoon advantage. Almost every time he's
out there, he's going against favorable matchups. He's left and
(47:34):
he's getting one eleven. His ops coming in the season
against left against Righty's was like eight hundred plus. What happened?
Speaker 6 (47:43):
Man?
Speaker 2 (47:45):
Love hurts, freaking hurts. Everybody hurts. Are around Mattie? Six games?
Get your T shirts ready, baby, five and one? Hashtag
five to one eleven fourteen says four too in hope.
If y'all are printing shirts three three GTFO, I don't
(48:06):
want to. I don't want those shirts. Eleven Sports Talk seven
eighty got feelings are coming out ten minutes from now.
This where you get to call in to make your predictions.
Are you with us on team five and one? Are
you against us? I'm gonna put a pole question up
as a matter of fact, now those how could anybody
(48:26):
be against that? No, I should say, do you think
they'll do? You think they'll go five and one this week? Okay,
I'm telling you Gang five and one get a chance.
Don't ask me. I can't guarantee four and two, although
I feel still feels good at for two because everybody's
beating each other up. Eventually you would think, m hmm,
But the problem is you don't. You don't have tie
breakers against the Tigers or the Guardians. You have no
(48:48):
tiebreakers against anybody? Yeah, everybody, everybody every time lose. No,
that's the funny thing to me, because you know, all
these people are like, yeah, they we need bad teams.
They rushed the good teams. Like how is that possible
when every good team we've they're up against they lost
the tightebreaker except the Rangers, who well they're out, they're five.
(49:10):
I think they could be eliminated tonight. Oh good. Yeah,
it's it's Cleveland, Boston, Detroit, Houston. Four teams for three spots.
Somebody's gonna be sad. Imagine Detroit Trent ahead. How big
was early that day? I tell you fourteen and a half.
Fourteen and a half. Yeah, it was at least twelve
and a half. If they are if they if they
(49:32):
lose this series of the Guardians, then they go to Boston,
and Boston's gonna have a home field. It's gonna be
at Fenway Park for the final three. You talk about
aj Hinch hate Oh lord, he was. He was the
shoe in for Manager of the Year about three months
into the year. Is shoeing for home field advantage throughout
the playoffs? What a long, strange season it's been. Let's
(49:55):
go to uh, Steve and Katie on the Matt Thomas Show.
Ross Steve, Good morning.
Speaker 7 (50:00):
A Matt.
Speaker 17 (50:01):
Are you the top sports radio guy in the city
or maybe in the nation To say yes.
Speaker 15 (50:07):
Then you know, top gun Tom Cruise.
Speaker 17 (50:10):
She said, are you a good pilot and she he
said yes, and she said.
Speaker 8 (50:15):
Then I don't have to worry about your saying career.
Speaker 17 (50:18):
So, Matt, I have one comment, and I know you
backed it up, but you are the best basketball analysis
in the city, maybe the country, but your baseball Mike Trout.
Speaker 2 (50:29):
Hold on, hold on, I'm not gonna let you go
any further. I just corrected myself thirty seconds after I
said it.
Speaker 13 (50:34):
I know you did, I said, I said, yeah, yeah,
I mean.
Speaker 2 (50:38):
I do not I do not deserve I didn't follow
my sword on it. I didn't go you're wrong. I'm like,
you know what, I forgot He had eight or nine
as Ross would say, my recency bias. Oh got got
me caught up in that, and so I did. So
I had fifteen seconds.
Speaker 13 (50:54):
I you know what, you felt like my You just felt.
Speaker 9 (50:56):
Like my trout like I don't.
Speaker 2 (50:58):
So you're biased. No, actually, he doesn't bothered me. I
actually feel kind of feel sorry for him, but I don't.
I don't want to be good because if he's really
really good, it means the Angels are competitive, and they
have been competitive.
Speaker 6 (51:06):
So yeah, but we could have him when he was
in his prime, yeah right now, but he ain't in
his prime.
Speaker 2 (51:14):
But he's again, Thanks for the phone, I know, that's right,
that's what we're here for. Yeah, I I what do
they call when you have on your brain fart? Brain fart? Yeah,
in a fifteen second brain fart that stupends out of
four hours? Not bad? Are you kidding me? Fifteen seconds
out of a thirty year broadcast careers?
Speaker 18 (51:37):
What did you say a little more a little more
brain farts from that?
Speaker 2 (51:43):
I may have said it inappropriate things, but yeah, yeah,
I don't. I don't really remember a sports take that
I just fell on my that I just continue not
to give up on even man, there's not like there's
nothing something today to say, like, you still don't you
still don't have a Tucker Kyle Tucker under seven and
(52:04):
a half. That's how we're feeling. Uh, mid, how's his calf?
Can I tell you somebody to come back? You probably
gonna win the bet. I wouldn't do it. I think
he's he's he's hurt this year. He went into a
nasty slump this year. I understand the five tool capability.
I'm I'm team Kyle Tucker. I get it, but I
(52:26):
I don't. I'm not even I mean, I'm not even
doing it.
Speaker 1 (52:28):
Man.
Speaker 2 (52:28):
I know wan So is having a good year for
the Mets, But in five years now, is wan sotal
gonna help in that ginormous contract going to hurt them
with getting other players? Maybe not because it's New York.
But I'm not team ten year guy. I'm I lean
more towards the Jim Crane thought process that I do
than the I'm gonna outspend guys and out and out
(52:51):
give them the super long contracts wan So dude was
like fifteen years or something. Right, even the Bobby wit
De you with Kansas City, that's just buying out our beers.
That's yeah, that was arbitration. Yeah, one soda. Can you
believe he's still only twenty six. I remember when he
just turned twenty one. Yeah, well, we don't have to talk
(53:11):
about it. We don't have to talk about that. But yeah,
well Kyle Tucker. I mean know, well one Soda rallied
his year big time. He has, He's been great. He's
been great while the team has been tasting. He's yeah,
he's got an ops of nine thirty four now one sodo.
But he's a butcher in the field. That's the thing.
(53:31):
Kyle Tucker is gold Glove caliber. Yeah, he was, he's
he's five tool he is. But uh, it's two straight
years of injuries. Now again, last year was just flokish.
I don't know how he suffered the calf injury. He's
played one hundred and thirty three games this year, Soda
or Tucker Tucker? Okay, and what's it? What are the
numbers this year? Eight fifty four oh ps excellent, Yeah,
(53:58):
two seventy average, twenty uh excuse me, twenty two home
runs regular feel that's not spectacular. A lot of National
League ballparks are very hit or friendly. I mean, he's he's,
he's a star, but I'm not giving him ten years,
four a million dollars. That's just crazy. That's crazy to me.
Price Yeah, I again, I was, and we said this
(54:21):
with U Bregman, like there's a certain couple of teams
who are involved. There's two different markets in the free agency.
There's the Dodgers, Yankees, Mets, maybe Red Sox, Cubs market basically,
and then there's everyone else. If those teams aren't interested
in you, it goes way down and then you're you're
an opt out country. It's not like there's a lack
of a middle class, but there's a significant drop between
(54:42):
Team four spending wise, and Team right. There is a
middle class astros or andros are upper middle class class. Yeah, yeah,
we were living in Memorial. We don't live in a
Rokes Memorial. Yeah it's not bad. I live a Memorial.
I live anywhere but where I'm now because I'm damn far.
But that's a different issue. Kingwood's King was, King was nice.
It's beautiful too freaking far. Before we get to gut feelings,
(55:04):
Roger on seven A, Hello Rogers.
Speaker 16 (55:08):
What's going off with real quick? About the assolute? I
just don't see five and one Gante this possibility just
because we don't do the things right. We just don't, uh,
you know the other day with with Naylor, he said,
Ray in the field, boom, a bunch of left and
nobody home and until the big bug got the first
without without even a without without will be close. And
(55:30):
then you got, you know, just putting the bat on
the ball. You guys, get these these infield hits and
just because they're they're not striking out, and it's always
you know, put the bat on the ball. Things might happen,
you know, let them field it. And we're just not
doing enough of that this year to give ourselves our
own break. I just hate to say that about us, man,
but we're just not that team again. And I have
(55:51):
to six games left to see if we can catch fire.
I mean, of course, well for it. You know, I'm
an actually stand all my life, so yeah, of course,
But man, I just don't fully uh And I don't
even want to talk about any other I don't want
to go bit it bad vines about injury. So I'm
gonna be achieve it at that have a good game.
Speaker 2 (56:10):
When when all the sports teams suffering at the same time,
it does drag you down.
Speaker 11 (56:14):
You know what.
Speaker 2 (56:14):
I don't like something that Rogers did, a lot of
people are doing. I don't want to hear about the
injuries and then you go and give your take. I mean,
the injuries are legit. Injuries are the reason why the
team is where they are. You have Jordon Alvarez playing
one hundred and forty games. This is an issue. Friends. Yeah,
we had somebody last it was Friday. I think they
were like, I win, and I don't want to hear
about Jordan Alvarez. You don't want to hear about one
(56:35):
of the best players in baseball being hurt. That's legitimate excuse.
You can say you don't want to hear about it,
but it's legit if you. If he's not pred it's
just playing one hundred and forty games, guess what, he's
probably cracking thirty home runs. Yeah, that's like the Texans offense.
I don't want to hear about the lack of an
offensive line and run game. That's a big part of
why everything that's happening. You can't just say I don't
(56:56):
want to hear about and again, that means it's not
relevant or it's not valid. It is. It's a it's
a classic if then statement. If the Texans had an
offensive line, maybe the CJ stri would throw more accurate
passes or have ability to throw downfield. If the astro's
head you on and Alvarez and Esach part isn't for
that matter, Jake Myers playing all year long now again,
(57:17):
injuries are a part of sports. No team goes injury free.
But to this level, it's the storyline if you you know,
it was like built just built for success. Yes, we're
on our way. Astros twenty twenty five. We were hurt
a lot. That's a theme, that's their hashtag. Yeah, we
were hurt a lot. Built for this, built for the
(57:39):
hospital injured, built for medical care, built for il built
for long term injury lists, built for a long term
shuttle between Sugar Line and Houston. For said players. Gut feelings,
they're deductible early, that's true. Gut feelings are up next
seven to one three two one two five seven ninety
seven to one three two to five seven anty if
(58:01):
there is a gut feeling you have, I've asked a
simple question, Ross and it's on my pole question at
sports seven ninety dot com. Are you team on team
five and one this week? So far? Six votes are
in very small sample size. I can tell you this
because I went to U of h four of you
are in two of you or not? Thus sixty seven
(58:22):
percent seven one three, two, one two five seven Any
get your gut feelings in right now seve one three two,
one two five seven ninety listen up. So appealing, wasn't.
Speaker 3 (58:35):
That Tommy, you'll like got a gut feeling.
Speaker 2 (58:38):
This is their gut feeling on the Matt Thomas Show. Now,
I was not here last Tuesday. I was hanging out
with my NBA brethren, so I did not make any
gut feelings. So I cannot wait to hear how you
guys did last week and if you have a gut
feeling for this week seven one three two one two
five seven ninety seven one three two one two five seven.
I'm just gonna sit back and listen to all your
(59:00):
curate gut feelings from the last Tuesday. God, what was
I thinking? Let's go, let's hear them, Let's hear them.
Speaker 13 (59:07):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (59:10):
I cannot wait to hear these Texans two touchdowns and
win versus the Jaguars. I said, strike one, Astros win
the American League West, strike two. Hey, we got a
one point two percent chance or whatever it is. Keep going,
(59:33):
aj blue ball, four innings, pitch, one earned run. I
think it was three innings a shutout, So that wasn't
the worst one. I'll uh I'll actually, because I'm in
a giving mood, I'll give you credit for that one.
And that was it for me. Look at this, Jonathan Allen,
you remember what you said, Texans go oh and three?
Uh no, you said Wall? You did? You did say
(59:54):
that a week ago. Two weeks ago he did say
Texans owing three, and I was mad at him. Also
last week he said Astro sweep the Rangers. I forgot,
good for you, Good for you? Yeah, they I mean
they did, yeah, they get theirs. But I forgot about that.
And so we did gut feelings in the one o'clock
(01:00:15):
hour with Adam Clanton. Be because you forgot eleven thirty. No,
it's because we actually because we got uh. It was
a Tuesday and we had Wall the Wall Texans call
good good job. I pushed it back. Ye, yeah, good job.
People very upset about the Texans and the and the Buccaneers.
Now they're upset about the Texans and the Jaguars and
Nick Key h. Adam Clinton's had the Texans and Chiefs
(01:00:38):
going oh and three. The Chiefs won, and he had
Joe Mixon and missing the entire season TVD. I think
I have got that one, and he has the Texans
not making the playoffs, which is looking pretty good. Okay,
so let's go by the way, if you want to
vote on my poll question, it is are you on
(01:00:58):
team five and one? This week? Twenty eight votes are in.
It's a small sample size. We'd like to get it too.
Maybe twenty eight hundred would be nice. Fifty percent of
you say hell yeah, forty percent, No, I'm hurting forty
three percent. There's a healthy dose of synesism out there. Well,
have you met Astros Twitter? I'm surprised it's only forty
three percent. Have you voted yet? I did, and you
(01:01:19):
said it's a I believe it's what do they call it? Secret?
Secret ballot? You've been very UNFORGN too. That's personal information
that I don't have tell you I voted for in
any election. Matt, all right, it's fine. I did five
on one, but I'm not super optimistic about it after
this weekend. It's theirs. It's computers, it's there, it's theirs.
(01:01:41):
It's theirs for the taking. Just win the games. What's
been sitting there in front of them for yeah, about
a month? All right? Uh? Number one Astros are making
the playoffs. Write that down. That's a gut feeling.
Speaker 6 (01:01:52):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (01:01:54):
Number two Cougars win by at least two touchdowns at
Oregon State this Friday. Wow, so that's going to be
fourteen or more. Okay. Number three the Rockets do not
(01:02:15):
pick up anybody to replace Fred van Vliet. Okay, and
you got you where you're unloading. It's been a couple
of weeks. Yeah. Uh. Number four am wins against Auburn
(01:02:36):
covers the spread. Oh is that at Homer on the road.
That's at home Auburn back to back road weeks after
a tough week at Oklahoma. Uh that current spread by way,
just make sure we're staying accurate here on that would
be let's see here. Uh yeah, you want the liveline
or the closing line. I want the spread right now
at six and a half. I'll take a and M
giving up the six and a half to beat Auburn
(01:02:56):
in College station. Okay, Um, and I got some more,
but I'll let you guys go next seven one three
two one two five seven nine zero. You have any
gut feelings, you want to brag about them, Let's go
seven one three two one two five seven nine zero.
Astros make the playoffs, they go four and two in
their final six. Okay, so you're not team five and one,
(01:03:19):
your team four and two, So it would be a no. Okay,
that's fine. I don't care as long as I get
in hell if they go to and four make the playoffs,
I don't care. I mean, it'd be kind of hard,
but it's possible. Texans win, but do not cover six
and a half. See, let me just tell you how
fraudulent I am you ready for this?
Speaker 1 (01:03:37):
No?
Speaker 2 (01:03:37):
I either think they're going to blow the Titans out
or lose the game. I don't think it comes down
in between, nothing in between. I mean, that's a gut feeling.
Can I put both down as I can? It's fine,
all right, but you feel in your gut, so put
it this way. The line will not be an issue. Okay,
that's you should put that down. My it's my prognostication
(01:03:57):
on my gut feeling is the line will not be
an shoot. Okay, all right, johnthan are you giving for you?
Speaker 7 (01:04:06):
Yeah?
Speaker 18 (01:04:06):
If this week four, if Texans don't win against this Texans,
the Titans team looking throughout the weeks, they're not going
to get a win till possibly a week seven, until.
Speaker 2 (01:04:17):
They versus if the Texans go and four, they'll go
oh six, yes, m hm, they had they like absolutely,
Actually my muscle, this is the must win, must wing game. Okay.
Oh and if they go and four they'll go seven?
Is that we're saying six six? Because all right, I'll
(01:04:39):
put this one now. I'm I have another Texans went
to you. If the Texans lose this week, they are
not making the playoffs at all, even la a little bit.
I've already said they're done. I've already said the a
FC South champions are in Indianapolis. Okay, do you want
to write that one down? To hold on? Let's say
(01:05:00):
they the Colts are gonna win the ANFC South. Yeah,
you said that, okay, And if the Texans lose this week,
they're not making the playoffs. Yeah, And that's gonna put
Hannah so pissed off because she's trying to get herself
a refurbished stadium this year, or at least on the
ballot or some sort of conversation piece that ain't gonna fly.
Hannah is gonna be pissed. Meanwhile, Cal is gonna just
(01:05:24):
buy the newest version of NBA two K. You want
to make some more you want to say some more.
Say it. It's God, it's not I'm gonna judge. Just
say it. Uh No, because I was actually gonna say
Woody Marks is gonna split snaps with Nick Chubb, but
(01:05:45):
he basically did that this week. I was gonna say,
that's something crazy. It is thirty three to thirty, thirty
three snaps to thirty. All right, those are ours. Now
it's your turn. Seven one three, two one two five
seven ninety.
Speaker 7 (01:05:58):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:05:58):
I want to make some sort of I don't know
exactly I had to put it, though, I think a
men Thompson is gonna be a good point guard. How
do I say that? Well, first of all, are you
assuming he's gonna be the point guard?
Speaker 6 (01:06:05):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (01:06:07):
So you would you like to say something along the
lines of ball in hand, running point, turnover percentage You'll
go way down. Honestly, that's and I don't know exactly
what to say. All right, I'm gonna let you think
about it for a minute. A man, I'm just gonna
put amend tims. Soon we'll be even will amend as
as we will amend amend as we need to said
three times fast seven one three two one two five Sevenini,
(01:06:28):
your gut feelings are next eleven forty four Sports Talk
seven ninety seven one three two one two five seven
ninety seven one three two one two five seven ninety
We have a segment now for you guys to get
in with your gut feelings. And we've got folks that
want to get in. That's that, so let's do that
right now. Seven one three two one two five seven
(01:06:50):
nine zero And today, dear park, what's in your gut
this week? Anthony?
Speaker 19 (01:06:56):
Hey, good morning guys. So I have to My first
one is I think the Astros will head into the
weekend in the second wild card spot, and I'm basically
not just off of who the Red Sox and Guardians
are playing this week. And my second gut feeling is
that Kaylin de bor gets off the hot seat in
Alabama upset Georgia this weekend.
Speaker 2 (01:07:17):
I like it. Like that very much, Thank you very much.
I don't I can't speak to the how that's going
to go at all. Okay, you know, you know I
was thinking about this, and I don't mean to segue
to something from college football, but this whole nil thin
is obviously changed the landscape of sports and how teams
can go from super good, super bad, pretty quick, case
(01:07:40):
in point Oklahoma State, case and point Clemson. Who else
who's falling off? Flora? You know Floria State last year
went to and ten? Right, Yes, they're the eighth ranked
team in the country. Right now, that's a quick turnaround.
That's not quick, that's like what would you call it fast? Lightning? Fast?
No second but three? But then they make the almost
(01:08:04):
make the playoffs two years ago? Yeah, but teams, But
how do you go from almost making the national playoff
to to and ten to being the Atherrane team of
the country? Money? Probably? Yeah, Alabama Georgia, that's a good match.
But by the way, we did not bring this up
(01:08:25):
at all. Uh it on college. Did you see who
the natural rivalries are for the next four years for
the schools in the SEC? The natural rivalry like those
the teams will play every year for the next four years.
Speaker 7 (01:08:36):
I did not.
Speaker 2 (01:08:37):
Uh, A and M will be playing Texas every year?
Oh really? Yeah? What about OU? They'll be playing Missouri
every four years?
Speaker 13 (01:08:49):
So Texas?
Speaker 2 (01:08:49):
Wait so Texas and oh you aren't playing every year?
Hold on the next four years? No, no, no, I think
I think that's OU natural rivalries. Hold on, I want
to get this right because I don't want to give
me the wrong ones.
Speaker 6 (01:08:59):
Here.
Speaker 2 (01:09:02):
Let's see these are talk for one second and they're
called on Instagram at sports RV. I really would appreciate it.
Uploaded a video yesterday, been trying to put more content
on there, build up followership. It would really help me
in uh in the growth of my media career if
you give me a follow on Instagram at sports RV.
(01:09:22):
So Texas yearly rivalries will be A and m Arkansas
and Oklahoma. Oh so you picked three. That's interesting, Adam
will be Texas, LSU and Missouri. So am Oklahoma will
not play every year. Now you can't play each other,
but those are the guarantee for the next four to
three years. Okay. So basically we were talking today about
(01:09:42):
there are so many odd schools that don't have them.
They want to just say, all right, we're gonna have
to throw you a bone. It sounds like to me
what they did is the each of the schools win
with them and said give me one. We have to
play you every year. And my guest is Texas said
we have to play Oklahoma every year. You have to
And my guest and m said we have to play
texts every year. Probably no, I don't think who does
(01:10:06):
l E s U say they have to play every year?
Speaker 3 (01:10:07):
Who?
Speaker 2 (01:10:08):
I'm curious I want who? L SU probably would have said, well,
their naturals are Arkansas Old Miss and A and M.
I'm curious. Maybe Gordio had answer to that. What would
what when LSU went to the table and said, we
have to play somebody every year? A and M and
them have been kind of a rivalry. But over the
(01:10:29):
years though it's I feel like it's been L s
U and Alabama M. Now I'm no, I'm just I'm
assuming this was in play. That's the word on the
streets was each school said, okay, we're not you're not
gonna get who you exactly want. But who's the one
you have to have? Arkansas Old Miss and A and M?
What would be the one that LSU said we absolutely
have to play you? I don't think any of those three, right.
(01:10:54):
Who is L s U's biggest sec rival? Thought I
would say Alabama Over the years, Alabama, I'm sure had
to say we're we want to play Auburn every year.
You can't have those schools like, for instance, Alabama's three
are Auburn makes sense. Tennessee, okay, kind of historic Mississippi state.
I mean, all right, everybody's getting a dog in the group. Yeah.
(01:11:17):
Why did Texas or say when did they go to
the pound the table and say, uh, Kentucky and Vanderbilt,
you gotta play those guys every year? That's right. Yeah,
Levandy's been pretty good. It's kind of nice that they
were saying, you know what, we'll let you have one,
but you're not getting all three. That's interesting. Seven one
three two one two five seven unty seven one three
(01:11:37):
two one two five seven unty. So how does Kentucky
get Kentucky gets Florida? Tennessee? And I came and tell this,
Oh South Carolina, Poor South Carolina, they got nobody. Yeah,
well they play Clemson every year. Yeah, but that's a
different contract though. South Carolina's every year are Georgia, Florida
and Kentucky. Now, these things change, will change every four years.
(01:11:57):
So okay, why if it's your historical rival, it's your
historical righte annual opponents of what they call them, So
I can't. I problem is, are you ever gonna see
a moment where you are where Texas chooses Oklahoma over
A and M. And you're probably saying, well, of course
they would, because that's the biggest rabble. But I can't
imagine I would think they would. That's that game. You
(01:12:20):
have to have that game everything at the State Fair.
I split fifty to fifty. That game has to be
everything on that because we've had we lived without A
and M Texas for the longest time. We said we're
gonna get it back.
Speaker 3 (01:12:31):
Everybody.
Speaker 2 (01:12:32):
Yeah, I need my Fletcher's corny dog and my wax
cup of paper, wax cup of beer, and my disappointing losses.
I need them. Are y'all gonna win this year? Let's
just say, uh. The the shouts for let's make sure
(01:12:53):
we go to the ou Texas game this year have
turned to whispers with me and the crew, and the
crew are not as I almost was going to buy
you a really rude gift. What would that be? Tickets
to the alimal Bole They might end up there. Art's
not very good. But how how does this happen? He
(01:13:14):
was a chosen one. He was a Trevor Lawrence exactly.
Here's a Trevor Lawrence account for that's your example. Everybody
hits their ceiling somewhere. You and me, it's here, man.
I see now that you don't have any rope. I
(01:13:39):
can get you a knife too much, but get your
butter too much of what was for that? Everyone finds
their ceiling somewhere. And maybe how about we not give
up on him just yet. I'm not giving up on him.
That was bad. Come on, he shouldn't have done that.
(01:14:02):
I'll take you my biggest concern. My concern was it
decision making, which was my biggest issue with him last year,
and finally he fumbled. I think I could convince myself
that he didn't play last year because this decision making
and fumbling, because those can be fixed. Accuracy, I feel
like is a bigger issue long term. So if he's
not gonna be accurate, he's not gonna be a least
(01:14:23):
in your legacy. In your legacy at least for the universe.
Texas to me is beating Oklahoma a couple of times
while you're there. Look, Garrett Gilbert was a five star,
supposed to be all world. He wouldn't. He didn't turn
out to be anything. In college. There's five stars, and
I keep going back to the Malchi Nelson and who else,
whoever else, Sneako, Yammi Love and all the other five.
There was like five five star quarterbacks in his class,
and I don't think any of them are doing very well.
(01:14:44):
Maybe there's one I can't remember. All right, Love hurts,
ladies and gentlemen. We'll explain that and the news at
noon coming up in a minute eleven fifty eight here
on Sports Talk seven ninety's The mac Thomas Show with.
Speaker 5 (01:14:57):
Ross to rebound and thank you for the triple from
fresh van Fleet, and I look forward to more Fred
van Bleet three pointers.
Speaker 2 (01:15:17):
In the twenty twenty six twenty twenty seven season. You
mean in the deep playoff run? See you and may baby,
see you in May May fifteen, pretty v We need
you baby. That would be what's eight months from now?
(01:15:37):
That'd be May late mate. How long are a CL's
out for tipically? At least nine months probably, but you
don't really start jumping to that, like so he can't jump,
he can't jump anyway, It's fine, Yeah, Yeah, he's gonna
do the set shots. He had headed dunks since twenty fourteen,
so we're all good. You know, you know what I
was running that nine months?
Speaker 6 (01:15:57):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:15:57):
Yeah, see a cl we're making you in the show. Okay,
wait this time last year you told your to your
ACS surgery.
Speaker 18 (01:16:04):
This time in August last year. So I was okay.
I was like, were you running by nine months? I
was running by so I got that surge in August.
I was running on the trail and everything by December
and I had miniscus and I cl his is just
a cl so he should be a faster recovery.
Speaker 2 (01:16:19):
How long were you in the hospital for? Uh, just
for a day, just get to surgery. And then I
got hommed after like you look, six hours, they give
you some good meds. Oh, I was gone, let me taste.
I've only been in the hospital over night a couple
times of my entire life. You would think it'd be fun.
It's not. They wake you up every four hours, check
your vitals. It's so you can't get good sleep. M
(01:16:41):
Oh yeah, not, I would say. Hospital say doesn't sound
and the nurses are harry underarms. It's not great. Real
what nurse is you going to in France? Being and
mean ones? Get up surgery, have your medage. You can't
have a nurse wratchet. I wanted I wanted something on
the menu. Nope, it's not in your part of your diet.
Damn all right, that's nothing about my life. I gotta
(01:17:02):
snuck you at Cheeberger, won't you let me know? No? Okay,
well never mind. I don't want to be in the
hospital again for that, so okay, but thank you for
the thought.
Speaker 6 (01:17:12):
Though.
Speaker 2 (01:17:13):
That's already down one nil by the way, uh oh
to Washington. Time now for the news and noon. We
got a little bit of breaking news and open up
to twelve oh seven. Okay, I think it's forth the
second it's at least two, would you say, even for
this part of the country, for this part of the country. Yeah,
(01:17:34):
gave it three three oh this part of the season. No,
we're good. Yeah, good. Five's max three is good. Mike
Jundi outs at Oklahoma State. He has been fired, according
to multiple reports. Horrible start to the season for Oklahoma
(01:18:00):
State and the second longest tenured football coach in Division
one college football. Here's the reason why he barely held
onto his job last year. Okay, then you go a
national television to a game at Oregon and you lose
what by sixty points, sixty nine to three, and then
(01:18:21):
you lose at home to Tulsa. That was the death
nail they were gonna They weren't gonna let this thing simmer.
No longest head coach tenured in FBS is Kirk Ference
at Iowa. Second was Mike Gundy. Third Kyle Whittingham. So
he'd been there since two thousand and five, one hundred
(01:18:43):
and seventy wins at Oklahoma State. Now let me ask
you this, not knowing the program at all, the t
Boone Pickens family has shelled hundreds of millions of dollars
towards him. Correct, Yes, has that drained? Has that gone
as a used? And he passed So I don't know
what happened to his estate and if the children or
(01:19:04):
whoever are I think he won. I think he did
bequeath a lot of his money to the program. The
reality is this, I again, I'm just speaking in generality.
I don't know if there is a outside of the
Pickens family, if there is a lot of money available
to just yea heritage. I don't know. But Gundhi felt
(01:19:29):
like to me, he was, we'll do this the right
way without having to us on. I l if you
are if you are saying that nil, you can win
without nil you're fooling yourself. Go ask uh what's going
on at Clemson right now? Dabos Sweeney. Yeah, that was like,
we're not using the portal, we're not using an il. Well,
you're gonna be his old schools issue. What are you
(01:19:49):
gonna be getting your old school asked, well, I mean
you could be six and six. Help me enjoy that.
Speaker 7 (01:19:56):
Man.
Speaker 2 (01:19:58):
Losing the Tulsa at home at home Friday gets you fired.
That's gonna get you and we'll also losing by sixty
on the road's gonna get you fired too. Ten and
a half, I mean sixty nine to three. That's that's
what they did to Savannah State back in the day.
Back in the day, they were ten and a half
point favorites to the Tulsa Golden Hurricane. Tulsa had just
(01:20:22):
come off of back to back losses to New Mexico
State and Navy. So let's put this in perspective for
you Cougar fans. Here, Cougars are three and oh yes,
or I think we're double digit favorites at Oregon State
this Friday. Let's go, that puts it at four. If
you beat Oklahoma State, that's five. There, it feels like
(01:20:42):
a guaranteed win Saturday or is it on Thursday or Friday?
Because guys are playing Oh, Oregon State, it's Friday. The
Oklahoma State game is in a couple weeks. I think
they have only on Tuesday afternoon. I think of the week. Now,
we're not a maction team. Stop it. Oh, I'm sorry.
Where we need one more win to get to a
bowl that's gonna happen. We're going to a bowl game.
Gone bowling man going boning Houston, see you and mobile.
(01:21:03):
Let's go bigger than that Memphis with the Liberty Ball,
Texas Ball at an Ergy. Let's go game. Yeah yeah,
we'll get you tickets. How do you going? How my
my tech?
Speaker 3 (01:21:17):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (01:21:17):
Tickets looking? You can call someone three go kugs. Maybe
let's go all right? Now, okay, well I need your CVV,
I need your zip code. Get the STFU from me.
Continue on with the news at noon, Yes man, okay,
well that was some big breaking news. Of course, we
know the big news here in Houston is your Houston Astros.
(01:21:40):
What the biggest road trip of the season. Last weekend
was the biggest series of the season, and well they
got swept. So now back at it against the Athletics
for three games at Sutter Health Park in Sacramento. Christian Javier,
followed up by Hannah Brown and a from a is
(01:22:00):
in the three game set against the Sacramento A's. You
have declared five and one. Are you sticking to that?
I am? The people that vote on Twitter are not.
Seventy seventy six votes are in what that's a small sample? Sickay?
Hell yeah, thirty eight percent. No, I'm hurting. Sixty two percent.
(01:22:25):
Get your voting right now on my Twitter account at
sports empty. Are you on team five and one this week?
Thirty eight percent yes, sixty two percent say no. That's tough.
Marcus says, hoping but nervous. This team just doesn't have
it this year. Jesse was a long winded thing. Okay,
(01:22:45):
Cassius Clay four and two, Michael says he's on team
six and oh thank you Michael for your shout out
there at tire Man for six and oh all right,
it's possible.
Speaker 3 (01:22:54):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:22:54):
By the way, speaking of Twitter polls, I put one
up yesterday. Is CJ. Strout a franchise quarterback? How's that going?
By the way, fifty point three percent yes to forty
nine point seven percent. No, So if that is the
case and you show that to Nic Cassarro, is he
going to give him franchise type money? I think he
asked me. By the fact, I think the jury's out.
I think you get a little more of a sample
(01:23:15):
size this year. Right now, he still says he's to
the stage right now where you have to pay him.
You have to pay him, and you know what you do?
What's the alternative? You know, the successful teams do ross
They win when their quarterbacks are on rookie contracts, and
the Texans are gonna let those those days slip side away.
They spent while he was on the rookie contract. They
(01:23:36):
just have not won, except they didn't spend an offensive line.
I mean they have spent to go field players in.
But that's about as far as it got. Yeah, anything
else going on mentioned rockets, astrosh We got to change
in quarterback in the NFL. Well, I was trying to
bring this up because I did this poll on February
ninth of twenty twenty four. Is CD Strouder franchise quarterback?
(01:23:57):
And it was ninety six percent. Yes, we got some
more NFL news that will bring you coming up at
the one o'clock hour, coming up at one to twenty,
Joe Spot at twelve thirty fifteen seventeen minutes from now,
let's go with that. Come on, you, come on, there
is some good NFL news we can dive into coming
(01:24:19):
up at one twenty. And then, as you said, the
manager of your Houston Astros ahead of the two biggest
series of the year, following the biggest of the series
of the year list last week. Oh look, sports touch
is sentence. What don't go right in w for that
Oregon State game just yet? Beavers are zero and four,
so they will be desperate for a win. And this
is the first trip up there. I think you should win,
(01:24:39):
but you Houston sports is cursed right now, so I
can't take a damn thing for granted, damn sports touch.
You know what, the University of Houston will set us
free from this nasty aura around the city of Houston.
I think the Beavers could be dangerous. Why beavers are
always dangerous? They've got big chumpers, they don't they got
(01:25:02):
their ass kicked by Oregon this week. Do you think
you're just gonna head over there and roll over the Beavers?
I don't care if we're going by one point. I
don't care. I'm not betting on it, so serves I
don't care. I just don't think the beavers are gonna
lay down easy. Beavers can lay down easily sometimes. Look
at their season so far, the lambs their stout and strong.
It depends depends if you gotta work for it. I
think you're gonna have to go up there and you're
(01:25:23):
gonna have to work for those. We're gonna work for
that beaver win. Zero problem with that long ass flight.
Guys got up there early, get them hydrated, ready to
go charged, then knock that beaver out seven one three
two one two five seven ninety seven one three two
one two fives if I do. I'm not scaring of
dan beaver. I've said a lot of beavers in my time.
(01:25:45):
They don't scare me at all, not at all. All right,
let's go to uh twelve twenty three at about Thomas
Show with Ross. We have a family friend who is
powerwashing our house today and getting rid of some mildew
and also cleaning out our gutters. I just got a
(01:26:08):
terrible text. My wife's like he has to go to
the gas station to get some more gas. Because the
power washer needs more gas and I didn't realize my
house in such bad shape. Well that sounds like the
guy you hired is irresponsible. No, No, he's a good person.
He really is a good guy. Okay, and he's got
him from the work release prison program. That's not I said,
a family friend. So what's wrong with that? You you
(01:26:31):
got a friend that, yeah, a friend prisons. I don't
have friends in prison at this point. Well, that sounds
like you don't have fun friends. That's that feels fair.
You don't live life until you know somebody that's been
in prison. Yeah. Man, like, hey, I know you try
to get back on your feet. I give you a
couple hundred bucks power wash the house. I had a
roommate in UH when I was single before I got
married that called me. And he was a coworker of
(01:26:53):
mine when I was working at KSV many many years ago,
and he called me at one o'clock in the morning
said I'm a joke and you can bail me out.
I'm like, what did you do it? Because, well, I
got a I got a speeding ticket. I said, well
that's not going to get you, and he goes, well,
I didn't have my insurance. I said that strike two.
He was number three. I hit a car that was parked.
I said, okay, I'm on my way. Wow. So that's
(01:27:14):
that's as worse as a guy is. I had to go,
of course he did, but that was that was the worse.
I've never had anybody go to prison. Oh, okay, unless
you want to go. I don't want to go. And
you're gonna get three squares a day. I guess you
get a physical, good workout. That might be an option
when I get laid off. Kevin on seven ninety before
we talked to Joe a spot of Kevin. Good afternoon
(01:27:36):
to you. Hello, Kevin, Oh, Kevin, Kevin Shirley, Yes, go ahead, Kevin.
Speaker 10 (01:27:49):
Yes, I'm the name of Stonian for fifty something years
and I've seen quarterbacks come and go.
Speaker 6 (01:27:55):
But see.
Speaker 1 (01:27:57):
TJ.
Speaker 10 (01:27:57):
Stroud is not a franchise quarterback because he lost a dog.
Speaker 16 (01:28:01):
Okay, rector of rookie season.
Speaker 7 (01:28:03):
He was barking and doing everything.
Speaker 6 (01:28:04):
I have not seen anything.
Speaker 2 (01:28:09):
Barking like a dog. What does that mean?
Speaker 10 (01:28:12):
Well, he said, the dog in me with his rookie season,
that's what he was doing. He was barking and saying
he had the goods and nothing's happened since then. And
every time you'll talk about the offensive line, that's one element.
Receivers running, yah, But it all molls down to see
a shrouds comfortable with the team and who he is,
and he's not throwing the ball and pinpointed where it
(01:28:33):
needs to be at all.
Speaker 16 (01:28:35):
I don't know if he's played scared or is the
ag hurt, but it's CJ Stroud.
Speaker 6 (01:28:40):
It's not the other elements of the game. It's CJ.
Speaker 2 (01:28:43):
I'm going to no new contract, all right, thank you, Kevin.
I'm going to place blame all around. I'm going to
tell you his offensive line is the worst in the NFL.
It's been the worst for the first three weeks of
the season. I don't even know what pffs telling me,
but I don't need. I don't need the new rankings
drop tomorrow. Three weeks then they've been bottom. I think
besides an Eco Collin, there'sn't a single receiver that that
that scares anybody in the secondary. Christian Kirk's guy. He
(01:29:05):
had a couple of catches. I'm optimistic about him. There's
no running game to speak of, and I think he
had a first time play caller who's lower matched. Other
than that's not c J. Strout's fault. Actually, actually beyond that.
Speaker 7 (01:29:16):
Is c J.
Speaker 2 (01:29:16):
Strouts. He just happened good. He's a bottom ten quarterback.
Right now. He looks like he's moving slow. At the
end of last year, still I thought not that he
was ever fast. He was never you know, he's never
going to be confused with Lamar Jackson or Josh Allen.
And he he runs in terrible sex were sitting there
(01:29:36):
in the book man like he is lumbering. Yeah, he's
he does need some confidence, and an offensive line is
the best confidence builder you can find out there, really quick. kJ.
Before we talked to Joe Hello kJ.
Speaker 3 (01:29:56):
About ten years ago, Matt was a nickname Reverend J. Today.
My supervisors, my supervisor cause Ray K, Reverend kJ or Rev.
He's listened to me several times.
Speaker 2 (01:30:07):
Let me tell you something right now, kJ, you are
always until your last day on calling the show, in
my last day in the year, you will always be
to me the Reverend kJ.
Speaker 3 (01:30:15):
My man, I appreciate Tyn real quick. I hear a
lot of complaints about the old line, and obviously it
is a troch shuss with a capital of a troch
that said CJ has regrets pitifully. H is to the
point where we should be questioning the money, not necessarily.
My thing is this, I see routine leads over the years,
(01:30:35):
teams with bad offensive line play who are still abble
to to present a manageable offense. Again, they're not elite
by any stretch. The only player that I've seen play
iledally with a bad offensive line in recent years was
Joe Burrow. So I understand the offensive line is bad.
I'm not giving them a pass noway tape or form.
(01:30:57):
I genuinely do think the play calling is what's holding
us back. But because you're running and again you probably
just trying to over compensate for the offensive line to
the detriment of actually running the competent play. You're running
these tight splits in the zone Nickel, Nickel and Don
defenses with only two, at times maybe three receivers going out,
and there's just too many dbs. I definitely need didn't
(01:31:17):
even get the ball off because you're trying to run
the bunch form makes it so much to protect your
offensive line, and it's not working. There needs to be
some switch, either, an approach mindset, or just flat out Hey,
look the line of says, let's just go out there
and slinging and see what happens, because what you're doing
right now isn't working, and we're looking at bottle slow
two point zero. Let the showfellers, and I'll be listening.
Speaker 2 (01:31:39):
Again, Thank you very much. Joe spotted next after Ross
tells you about Cenergenics. Yes, where is look forward to
talking with the manager of your Houston Astros, and we'll
do that again right now. Sacramento, California the site for
a three game series with the A's, then a quick
trip to LA for three against Anaheimer's, and then hopefully
(01:31:59):
as postseason run. Joe a Spotta with us here on
the show Skip. Good morning, how are things?
Speaker 7 (01:32:05):
Yeah, good morning, guys. Things are well here in Sacramento.
Like you mentioned, it comes down to this week right here,
a very important week for us.
Speaker 6 (01:32:13):
Man.
Speaker 2 (01:32:14):
It is important, and I brought up this parallel, and
I don't know how you treat it. You if you
play twenty six weeks in twenty five of those weeks
this year have been this team is overachieved. It's had
so many injuries, You've had so many different lineups so
many guys overperforming, so many guys underperforming, and then it's
a wonderful story. The Astros have been a competitive and
(01:32:35):
now it's in your hands. I know you got to
worry about some scoreboard watching, and I know you hate
doing that, but realistically, you guys go five and one
this week, you're going the postseason. I mean, I hate
to dumb it down, but does that kind of have
the feeling in your mind as well? Just win and
scer everybody else?
Speaker 7 (01:32:50):
Yeah, you know, it's I think destiny's stealing our hands.
We decide our future and how we treat the next
next week. It's it's crucial and we have been in
this position before. I've been here long enough where we
entering the last week of the season down a game
(01:33:10):
and a half, two games out being you know, from
the division, like, we have been in this position before.
So this is not new for us. It's how we
handle business today on the baseball field, how we play
our game, not letting Uh, these past series, you know,
affect our focus and our preparation.
Speaker 2 (01:33:31):
None of that.
Speaker 7 (01:33:32):
I think it's in the past. Today is a new day. Uh,
it's a brand new week, and we had to take
the field and fight. This is a dog fight. And
you know, don't count this team out. I hear and
I read stuff where people think that we out. We're
not out. We were very much in this fight.
Speaker 2 (01:33:50):
Joe, What was the hardest part about that Seattle series?
Was it that Seattle just came in super hot and
you just nothing you could do to stop them. Was
it missed uppportunities on your part? A combination of both,
because look, we knew Seattle was good coming in, but
they really had a successful weekend in your ballpark.
Speaker 7 (01:34:07):
Yeah, yeah they did. And you know we knew coming
in that they have made some changes to the roster,
that acquired some players that have been playing some really
good ball and and they out they out played us,
and you know, we we had some opportunities. Uh, we
didn't play our best. In credit to you know, Seattle.
Speaker 15 (01:34:24):
They they they.
Speaker 7 (01:34:25):
They beat us. But it's it's in the past. We
have six very important games. There's gonna be you know
a lot of folks, uh, you know, watching the school
boards and and and we you know, we all it's
gonna be fun. I'm really looking forward to this week
because this is what you play for and this is
(01:34:46):
what the team is built for and I'm looking.
Speaker 2 (01:34:47):
Forward to you had to make a late scratch on
Sunday for Jeremy Panya did not play. Can you update
the folks on how he's doing right now?
Speaker 7 (01:34:55):
Yeah, So we are going I'm going to get to
the ballpark here early and and we're going to see
how we how he feels. He got some treatment yesterday.
It went well, but for me to make to put
him in the lineup, I have to see how he
feels in the next hour or two.
Speaker 2 (01:35:12):
With that, keeping on the injury front, well not injured,
because each pretis did play for you this weekend. How'd
you feel about the way he looked obviously had the
big home run. How he's moving and and potentially playing
him in the field, is that on the table? Uh?
Speaker 7 (01:35:27):
You know, playment on the field. It's we I don't
think we're still quite there yet. He is, he's moving Okay.
For me, it's more can he react and you know
that quick first step playing third base charging on a
slow roller. You know, we not quite there yet, And
(01:35:48):
it's just more how he feels mentally trusting he's leg
to make that kind of push and move. But he
is you know, he's feeling. He's feeling good for now.
The planet is continue to dh them and and we
need his bat We needed his offense, uh to continue
to be as good as he's been all year.
Speaker 2 (01:36:07):
Astros manager Joe Spotto was here on Sports Talk seven
nine a year got the series here in Sacramento. We
know that the ball can fly out there. Is there
anything you tell your hitters or pitchers should do anything
differently or do you just try to keep everything the same?
Speaker 7 (01:36:23):
Yeah, I know we're keeping things the same. We can
you know, you got to pitch to do We want
to pitch to our strength. Uh, you know, explore the
hitters weaknesses at the hitting club. We you know, we
we we have an approach that we have to carry out.
We we got to get on base and we really
not need to score early and set the tone from
the very beginning. And we know that this could be
(01:36:45):
a high scoring series. You know they you cannot score
enough runs here in Sacramento. We knew that the last
time we came here, and and we we understand the
importance of us playing our best. And you know, again
I'm looking really looking for or to see how our boys,
uh go out there and get this last push this
last week of the season.
Speaker 2 (01:37:05):
I always think, Joe that managers in baseball when it
comes to playoffs have to manage differently. You don't give
the least to the starting pitcher as much as you would.
Maybe you make a change in your lineup, you move
guys around a couple of different spots. Will you find
yourself this week doing a little more of that, because,
let's face it, this is the fact a playoff team,
even though there's still six games left to go in
(01:37:26):
the regular season.
Speaker 7 (01:37:28):
Yes, this is you know, we we got to treat
this week like like like the playoffs. We we have
to we have to attack and stay on the offensive
from the very beginning. And I got to treat each
game as you know, do or die, do or die
game like we have to play well from We have
(01:37:50):
to do our best win all six games, right, So
you know how we play and how I manage it's
it's it's playoffs, so things might look different. I might
do something differently just because it's all hands on up.
Speaker 2 (01:38:07):
Lineups change all the time. In the middle of July
and August, that just happens. Do you anticipate keeping it
in pen this week or do you think there'll be
some fluctuation with these line ups depending on who you're
pitching and how guys are doing it are what do
you what do you? What do you think putting your
crystal ball out about what you think you're going to
be putting on that lineup card for the next week
or so.
Speaker 7 (01:38:25):
You know, we we have some guys that are they're
going to be hitting in their in their spots. You know.
We have guys that are are are there get pay
a lot of money to get on base and to
drive people in. This is that's what we we. We
have them in the lineup, and we lean on those guys,
and we believe in those guys and not trust use
guys because they they've done it for a very long time.
(01:38:47):
So changing things around and trying to get all different
and Alaska, that's not the way the way it goes,
you know, but doing things differently, maybe running a little
bit more, maybe you know, maybe we got to get
guys over early in the game, trying to get an
extra run. Things like that I think are are needed.
(01:39:07):
But we just need to trust our guys and and
and let them do their thing and and hopefully we
know we can we can score a ton of runs
and and go here on a on a nice, a
nice run.
Speaker 2 (01:39:18):
I know, Joe, this will be an update for a
couple of days, but I know that Jordan will not
be available for you. At least you're an anticipating in
available available for the A series. What do you know
at this point? Again, things could change on them daily
here about Jordan and about maybe trying to get him
in at some point in the Anaheim series if he's
available to do so.
Speaker 7 (01:39:35):
Yeah, it'd be great, it'd be great. I know he's
feeling better every day. It'd be great if we could
get him on the field. But this is you know,
this is day by day thing, see how he feels,
and we continue to monitor his progress.
Speaker 2 (01:39:50):
But we have to do it.
Speaker 7 (01:39:52):
You know, he's not here right now. We have to
do it without him, and and I know that we
have the guys here in place to to get this done.
Speaker 2 (01:40:00):
I don't want to go macro too much because we
got six games in front, but the season as a whole,
one of your starting pitchers from Burr gave you double
digit quality starts in a row. But the last two
months have just he's been a different kind of player,
what what not necessarily what happened? But where is that
guy that we saw in April and May that was
giving you seven innings with his eyes closed.
Speaker 7 (01:40:22):
He's still there. I think he has he has struggle
commanding and his pitches and finishing hitters off, but I know,
I know he's still there. And one thing I do
know that he's got one more big starts to come
in here in the next few days. And we need
that guy to show up, and I know he's very
(01:40:42):
capable of doing that. I know he wants to do it,
and we have to prepare him to give us the
best start, the best start of the season, right when
we when we need it, which is right now.
Speaker 2 (01:40:54):
One of the silver linings over the weekend, very good
performance by your bullpen. Only had to use Brian A bray.
You once you're feeling pretty good about the guys you
got back there, if you can get those starts that
you need, good starts that you need to follow up
with a bullpen.
Speaker 11 (01:41:06):
Yeah, yeah, they're they're rested, and you know, we score
early and our starters give us a good five six
innings and we can hand the ball to our bullpen
who's done a really nice job, will be will be great.
Speaker 7 (01:41:18):
That's the strategy. But it, you know, starts with us
setting the tone early, scoring some early runs and and
putting the pressure.
Speaker 2 (01:41:25):
On our opponents.
Speaker 7 (01:41:26):
Uh, we cannot you know, wait around and and and
wait to the last innings. You know, if we get out, uh,
swing to the bat, well, get some people on base,
get some hits with many scoring positions. Give give us
starter something to relax on, or just do something be
comfortable on. That would be.
Speaker 11 (01:41:43):
That would be great.
Speaker 2 (01:41:45):
Joe, thank you for the weekly visits. We hope they
do not end today. I hope that you and I
and we're visiting again next week prior to the wild
Card Series. We really appreciate it. And good luck this
week in Sacramento, Anaheim.
Speaker 11 (01:41:54):
All right, fellas, thank you, you got it.
Speaker 2 (01:41:56):
Joe spotted with us here on a Sports Talk seven
nineteen twelve forty two is a time I'm gonna go
look at my pole, question see how we're doing. No,
we don't have to do that. I mean it's my responsibility.
I did put all Okay, I forget it, uh, twelve
forty two on Sports Talk seven ninety four to two
in Pray five and one in celebrate three three in shame,
(01:42:19):
Oh three three and really pray three three, go to church,
put some money in the tail three three can coon.
It's gonna be fine. What won't? And our lives will
move on because I got the Texans. Oh now I'm
(01:42:40):
walking out of here. Go Yeah, you get out. You
got work to do. Thatt Thomas Show with Ross continues
here at Sports Talk seven ninety. I figured out the
guaranteed way for the askers to make the playoffs. Stop
(01:43:01):
follow me on Instagram at Oh my God, you said
if I followed you there, we're gonna beat the Mariners.
Yes you're dead not true. Yes you did follow me
Instagram at sports MT and the Astros will make the playoffs, okay,
if they don't unfollow sports empt false promises. If these
(01:43:21):
if these false promises don't come through, you gotta unfollow them. No,
you're gonna want to see all the goodness of my life.
All right, So here comes the pole question. Okay, I'm
looking for team five and one people, and I've been
a little dismayed by the fact there's little faith in this.
Uh thirty seven percent our hell yeah, sixty three percent
(01:43:46):
or no, I'm hurting you're not on team five and one.
Are you serious? That's that's a that's an astrot like
seventy thirty the other way. Yeah, change quickly. The negative
nancies came in.
Speaker 3 (01:43:57):
M M.
Speaker 2 (01:43:59):
So if you want to vote, it's at Sports Empty.
Matter of fact, I will go vote for my burners. Yeah,
waite Buster's hou is bullish on the team. By the way,
my burner is at Sports Talk seven ninety. Oh is
it really? I just I just pinned it at the
very top. So if you're on team five and one
this week, get your voting because right now you're in
the minority thirty.
Speaker 20 (01:44:20):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:44:20):
I don't want to read between the lines on this,
but you sometimes you take conversation pieces, Okay. I think
he was direct messaging, or at least sending a message
to Christian Walker brouh, We're gonna sit your ass on
the bench if you can't give us anything. He's he
could put Victor Carrotini at first base and at least
and at least get more. I mean not trying to
(01:44:42):
put everything on your defensively, but he's been a better
hitter for the balance of the season. That's absolutely accurate. Well,
at least it's not like he's olden in the first
year of a long, longer deal. He's only got two
years left. It's not a long deal longer. It's a
medium sized deal. It's not great, not a Kyle Tucker
nine year deal. I'm thinking ten plus. Okay, that's be true.
(01:45:06):
So I don't just pay lineup shifting. I don't anticipate
a lot of gotta go to day's rest because there's
no more rest. It's it six games left, two oh
three with a five sixty five ops in September. For
Christian Walker, the easy answer is going to be what
does his team do for twenty twenty six. You could
(01:45:28):
move with Christian Walker, but you're also gonna have to
pay a lot of that salary. You'd have to pay
a bunch of the salary. Yeah, everybody can now be
traded because teams are having to pick up tabs. So
they just got off to a bad start with that
oblique injury to start the season, and it just feels
like but there was never a good enough run. There
was never a man this month of blank well July
(01:45:49):
maybe July was close, but he he was like eight
hundred ops. It wasn't like a thousand to bring the number,
it wasn't enough to bring everything else. Secout count was
still very high. And again some of this things about
we I don't think we were expecting prime Albert poolholes
when he got here. No, he was never a great
batting average guy. He had a lot of slug He
had two forty five, two fifty and he get you
(01:46:10):
got like thirty moms, So he had it taken that. Yeah,
he's got twenty three bombs, which is I mean, when
you remember more than a guy who loved hitting at
dyke In Park, that the Crawford boxes would have been
his best friend. Okay, ops plus averages one hundred, that's
the last three years, one twenty two, excellent, one good. Ninety.
(01:46:31):
That was his last year in Arizona. No this year.
This year's now ninety. Honestly, it feels worse. It does,
but ninety means ten percent below average. When you're at
first base. You can't you can't be below average offensively.
When you're at first base. You need somebody hitting. That's
you're supposed to have some big boppers, as it were,
in your lineups at first base. It's just now he
(01:46:58):
is wearing the brunt of it. Because he was the
free agent acquisition I like this team has had. I
like the deal when it was made, it's what three years,
sixty million. It was good. It seemed like a good
but you know what, maybe there was a sign that
it wasn't a good deal because when asked, did Arizona
make you an offer? They said no? Bye eight thirty
three oh ps in July eight twenty nine, in August
(01:47:19):
five sixty five. In September, this is the worst month
he's had all season, all season. Compare him to your das.
What's his September been like? Because I'm trying, I'm trying
to equally place the blame other plan Like AL two Bay,
September has two days. AL two has been declining. And
this is the thing too. Can we say, oh, they're
gonna bounce back next year, Well, they're each going to
(01:47:40):
be an old year older. They're they're they're well over thirty.
Hold on, let me pull up yer. You want month
by month on y, yeah, give me give me September
m Okay, July he was good eight forty two, Yeah
like it. August six seventy six ops way below average.
(01:48:02):
September seven oh three. Coach is not good, not good.
He had a really good everybody what happened in July.
And there's another thing that hurt from this weekend. Do
you see ey Brady and their mother was running on
him again? Yeah, the pictures, but it's also he just
I still said, I give you a gut feeling a
long time ago. He's got the move to first base
for for who I mean? Christian Walker is there right now.
(01:48:23):
You can move him. But I think that thought would
be to put Estoc Paradis at first, because Carl you're
not moving Carlos Kray off a third, You're he's keya.
Estok Parade is solid at third, good to above. Carls
cray is better. He still got that cannon man. He
does his His range isn't as great as it used
to be, but he makes up for it for insanely
(01:48:44):
accurate throws. Accurate and strong. The combination of strength and
accuracy from his third base throws are very impressive. Oh no,
there's let me tell you, when we put this season
to bed, there's gonna be a lot of difficult conversations
happening over there and Downto, we have some stuff. Normally
it's like, oh, Astros offseason whatever. We had a lot
to talk about because figure out I well, now I'm
(01:49:05):
not gonna do it right now because we got other
things to get to. But true, we have a rotation
to figure out. Yes, we have an infield that's congested
to figure out. I mean, and we talked about this
a little bit yesterday. I don't think Fromber coming back
on a qualifying offer is completely off the table. I
think the number one thing, if you were to say,
among your pecking order of things to concern yourself with
(01:49:27):
ors is starting pitching. Okay, yes, blue ball gonna be
in the mix. What's happened? What's the latest on Arragheddy
and some of those other guys? A Lance mccollor's albatross
around your neck right now? Speaking of trades with a
lot of money sent the other way, he's in tradable
sent Oh, nobody's in Rafael Montero got traded. Nobody's untradeable.
(01:49:52):
Well for the money you have to If you can
get a clean bill of hell for the lance, you
could trade him. But again you're also inheriting a lot
of that contract. Is it legal to send more money
than the guy's contract is worth? Asking for a friend
named Jim Crane. You're not sending him a bonus old
cherry on top. No, oh yeah, he's making eighteen. We're
(01:50:12):
gonna send you twenty, ladies and gentlemen. I always tell
y'all how rudy is. This is a classic example of
how rudy is. Asking if you could do that? No,
you can't. You're not giving them interest. It's one year left.
You didn't have my what you can have my yacht
for a week? Twelve fifty seven. The final hour of
(01:50:33):
the show will feature coming up in twenty five minutes,
Ross's nfl rewind and believe it or not, today is
all things about Mike Gundhy. He has been fired. He
didn't get to resign Rossy. He got fired. Well, I mean,
can you say he didn't deserve it. He was getting
his ass whooped and it was a really smug about it.
You can't do both.
Speaker 3 (01:50:53):
No.
Speaker 2 (01:50:54):
Now he used to be forty. Now he's got to
be what late fifties? He is fit at late fifties.
That was eighteen years ago when he said that. Okay,
I got a real quick gut feeling for you. Is
he coaching? Is he a head coach in college football
next year. No, will he be a head coach within
three years? Yes, City, you're out and then then come yeah,
(01:51:19):
get him on. Now it's gonna be a program that
you're not gonna FS one. Well, it's gonna be it's
gonna be like a Mike Kermit, I mean, I mean
Tom Harmon Arkansas, flat floid Atlantic type thing.
Speaker 6 (01:51:28):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:51:29):
I don't think he's power four. Well, Tulsa didn't want
him trying to think of smaller schools in the Oklahoma
says we're good or Roberts don't gonna have football. Twelve
fifty eight Final Hour The Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
If you guys want to come on in and join us,
you may do so. Seven one three two one two
five seven ninety. That's seven one, three, two, one two
five seven ninety is The Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
(01:51:54):
Never in the history of The Matt Thomas Show at
Ross do we have two sets of breaking news going
out at the same time. Suck at a team? Hit
the sounder again, hit it one more time. What that's three?
I'm gonna add a fourth ho because we're gonna add
him together. Hit it again. Oh my team you can
(01:52:19):
suck it. Relax. Do you want Texans or baseball? Oh
my god, Texans. The Texans are releasing CJ. Garner Johnson.
I told y'all why I am the Texans insider. What
(01:52:41):
did you say? I said, this guy's gonna be one
and done. I didn't really be three weeks and done.
I told y'all stop listening to the YouTube shows that
are unemployed. Listen to people that are employed. Me Tojo,
this guy was no good out. See you bye. Probably
told Dimiko to suck it. Dimiko's like, suck it back out, bitch,
(01:53:03):
suck it back.
Speaker 11 (01:53:04):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:53:07):
According to Aaron Wilson, the Texans have released CJ. Gardner
Johnson after friction behind the scenes. Duh, I am the insider,
with him complaining about his role, wanting to blitz more,
per league sources, and even communicating that he wanted to
(01:53:28):
be traded. I cannot say this clearly enough. I told
y'all CJ. Garner and Johnson, he's been with four teams
in his NFL career. Wow, there is a reason for it.
He's not a good dude. That was quick. I'm surprised.
I'm I'm pretty surprised that it happened this way? Would
(01:53:50):
you like the second bit of breaking news? Not nearly
as it's not nearly as.
Speaker 3 (01:53:56):
That.
Speaker 2 (01:53:56):
That's kind of her shattering. Wow, that's pretty big, that's
it's huge. What the hell?
Speaker 6 (01:54:02):
What the hell?
Speaker 2 (01:54:03):
CJ. Gardner Johnson? Does this mean Jimmy Wart's coming back?
He's been cleared? Means are a mess? They wouldn't they
wouldn't got CJ. Garnerd Johnson. They thought he would be
a guy that only could be here, but be here
for the long term. Problem is he's got a REP,
and the rep is not a good guy.
Speaker 11 (01:54:19):
Bye.
Speaker 2 (01:54:21):
Wow, Wow, you're you're shook by this. I'm not shocked. Okay,
I'm surprised. Would you like that? Would you like the
second bit of good news?
Speaker 6 (01:54:35):
Yes?
Speaker 3 (01:54:36):
You know.
Speaker 2 (01:54:37):
I'll give you some more Major League Baseball music. You
know what, Now we'll do without music?
Speaker 7 (01:54:42):
Here we go.
Speaker 2 (01:54:43):
Major League Baseball Sports rv Okay just announced the ABS
system has approved for use through the twenty twenty sixth season.
Here's how it works. You get two challenges per team. Okay,
the team keeps them as successful. So if you keep
the umpire keeps sucking, you get to keep on challenging
(01:55:05):
that's good. Okay, unlimited challenges initiated only by the pitcher,
the catcher and the batter with a tap of the
hat or helmet. Okay, if you go to an extra inning,
if you have zero remaining, you get an extra one.
That's good. And everybody in the stadium will see it
(01:55:26):
because this graphics in the stadium will be determining whether
or not it's There'll be no secrets. So the technology
is in place. Yes, it is. They can get every
single call, right, you got it, and they won't. Okay,
it's a step in the right direction. I'll take steps.
Are you kidding me? As compared to flying blind? Nope,
(01:55:48):
I'll take the step. Well, we eventually see the full thing.
Don't know, but I'm happy. In twenty twenty six, the
ABS is in play.
Speaker 7 (01:55:56):
He is.
Speaker 2 (01:55:57):
By the way, I just saw this on Twitter. I
mean c J. Gardner Johnson, Well, you said release in CJ.
I was like, what, sorry to you? Because during the
break Matt was acting like a nuclear bomb just got
dropped on somewhere. I was like, what the heck is
going on here? Because he told me not to We
do this on the show. We tell him not to
look at breaking news, or me not to look at
(01:56:17):
breaking news so we can have natural on air reaction.
Speaker 3 (01:56:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:56:19):
I was like, oh my god, this sounds crazy. But anyways, CJ.
Gardner Johnson has played ninety six percent of the defensive
snaps for the Texans this year. It must be so
bad over there. Should we call Aaron Wilson you want to?
We could call him on air, call him te Do
you text him? Okay, I'll take a phone call or
do that. Uh, this is some big stuff, big, big,
(01:56:43):
big stuff. Mike and Katie on seven on he Mike,
thanks for holding in. Good afternoon to you, Mike, did
you wait?
Speaker 8 (01:56:53):
Yeh Hi?
Speaker 2 (01:56:55):
How you doingbody amazing?
Speaker 9 (01:56:59):
Okay, I'm being an Asters fan for all my life
and always will be. But I guess honestly, this is
this is not the year for us. So I think
I'd rather for them not to make the playoffs stop.
Speaker 6 (01:57:10):
And be embarrassed.
Speaker 13 (01:57:11):
Stop stop, We're gonna be swept.
Speaker 6 (01:57:16):
So I'd rather you have to go down with the
Sunset group for next year.
Speaker 2 (01:57:20):
Mike, this is a terrible take of yours. I mean, god,
I called listener female listener her take asidine Yes, how
can the same to you? That's an asonine take Why
would you want that? Why do you care if they
get swept or not? Why do you how about how
about make the playoffs and maybe not get swept, or
maybe win a game or maybe, I don't know, win
the series. Why would you want to be a fan
(01:57:41):
to root against going to the playoffs? Walk me through that?
Speaker 9 (01:57:45):
Well, let me hey, the last eight years with being
the astro, if everybody knows the aster being winning and
be embarrassed, you know the way we're gonna get sweat.
Speaker 13 (01:57:53):
We don't have the team.
Speaker 9 (01:57:55):
Be honest, we don't not have the team this year,
so we rather not even make the playoff. Fire a
lot of coaches that we need to fires a lot
of people and regroup.
Speaker 2 (01:58:08):
That's horrible, Mike, that's horrible. Defeatis there's no guarantee they're
gonna go. What if they win the series? What if
they win two games? They can't beat the Boston Red
Sox or whoever in two games for two games, they
can't win two out of three against.
Speaker 6 (01:58:20):
I can't bet you a steak out from Kerries and
take on it. I'll bet you that they get the manager.
Speaker 2 (01:58:28):
Yep, they swept the Rangers last week.
Speaker 6 (01:58:32):
That was last week, buddy, that was last week.
Speaker 9 (01:58:35):
This team is opened down, open down.
Speaker 2 (01:58:38):
What it could be up this week could be happen.
Speaker 9 (01:58:42):
Okay, you guys, you're gonna remember me that I remember.
Speaker 2 (01:58:45):
You, all right. I remember you for being a completely
defeatist fan. Is what I remember you for. That's just
you can't go through life like this. You cannot do this. People.
They're gonna make the playoffs, I think, and then they're
gonna see what happens. Teams can catch lightning in a bottle.
Is it likely?
Speaker 3 (01:59:02):
No?
Speaker 2 (01:59:02):
Is it possible? Yes? The only way to be a
miracle story is to be in the playoffs and be
in the game. I mean, come on, this is now
like three or four calls sticking stop this, I stop it.
What is that I don't want my team to make
the playoffs? That's your day? Is utterly ridiculous. If it
was like a maybe maybe, if you're talking about the
(01:59:25):
NBA and they're getting into the lottery because the NBA
at eight seed has no chance, I can maybe wrap
my head around that. This baseball, there's miracle stories in
baseball all the time, and this is the team that
has made deep runs in the playoffs year after year
after year, except last year. I'd mark me down for
(01:59:49):
I just don't get it how this keeps happening. Your texts,
by the way, are imploding. You just got CJ. Gardner
Johnson and you're releasing him after three weeks. This is
a full on implosion. And you think Jimmy Ward, who's
been spending the last two months defending himself, is gonna
(02:00:11):
fix this when he was amid to begin with, uh,
Aaron Wilson says, He'll come on, I'm asking about next segment.
We'll see. Let's go right now. Yeah, screw the NFL.
Rewind that's it. This is this is the NFL current,
not even rewind anything. Yeah, I am the Texans insider.
(02:00:32):
I continue to give you. I don't let you down, folks,
I just don't. I told you this guy was a
bad dude. He wasn't gonna be around for long. I
didn't anticipate three weeks. This is bad. This is shocking.
This is bad, bad, bad, This is CJ. Garner Johnson
mfing Jamiico Ryans and he ain't got time for that.
(02:00:53):
Miko said, oh cool, story, bro, You're off the team.
Get out, bitch. He said he got he caught him
a bitch probably, and CJ was like, you want to
throw hands and he goes like squared up. I thinks like,
bring it. I'll just kick you in the knee. And
remember you got hermember heard her during training camp. Yes,
I really hurt you, and you said he was gonna
be out for the year. I'm actually so like shocked
(02:01:14):
that Matt was right. Thank you very much. I'm not
gonna let you down, Jonathan. I'm not gonna let you down, Jonathan.
I didn't let you down about Larry mc tunsel. I
didn't let you down about uh the Buffalo receiver. Uh
what's his face? I forgot his name already. If on Diggs,
I don't. I want everyone to shout it from the rooftop.
You're not the Texans empt is the Texans insider?
Speaker 3 (02:01:37):
No you're not.
Speaker 2 (02:01:37):
Yeah I am, I'm coming. You didn't say he was
gonna be week three?
Speaker 1 (02:01:42):
You know why?
Speaker 2 (02:01:42):
Because I'm busy on the air. I can't mean your source.
I can't. I can't check sources when I'm on when
I'm on the air, to media past Mara, come on,
thank you? How many once you suck at YouTubers y
no crap us, don't you call it her? And go
to Cow's Barbecue and hangouts. To the next segment. Next segment,
Here on.
Speaker 8 (02:02:02):
All right.
Speaker 2 (02:02:04):
Our next guest is a Texans insider like me, an
actual one. He may be action, but I'm gonna pretend
that I'm one. Aaron Wilson always comes on when we
need him, like at a spur of the moment, Aaron,
we're gonna buy you. Me and Ross are going to
lunch and I'm buying Russ will take care of the tip.
Speaker 6 (02:02:20):
How are you, sir, I'm great, sir.
Speaker 2 (02:02:23):
Yes, I swear to guy. We're doing it. We're going
to lunch. We're gonna talk a lot of stop, We're
gonna rip on a lot of people and be really petty.
So just be ready for that. Okay, you ready, Okay,
here we go.
Speaker 3 (02:02:33):
C J.
Speaker 2 (02:02:33):
Gardner Johnson. I didn't like the signing. I thought it
was a troubled past I what's that trade whatever? I
don't care he got here. I thought he was one
and done at best. I know that there was a
message of hey, I want to put my feet on
the ground, be there some way. This is a horrible,
horrible implosion type of decision. Now they had to tell
(02:02:55):
me why, I'm sorry, go ahead.
Speaker 6 (02:02:58):
There was major friction behind the teams involving season We've
been hearing about for weeks. He didn't know if it
was going to lead to I can do when it
comes to locker room issues, if it's going to lead
to a release or a trade, there's some kind of
actions like a benching. That's my normal level actor. You know,
you never know could get better. Is it festering? But
(02:03:18):
I was getting feedback that he'd asked for trade. They
did not obviously entertain that that he was complaining about
his role. He wanted to blitz more often. He did
have one quarterback hit, He had no interceptions. He was
critical teammates and their play in the secondary, throwing guys
under the bus. It was basically like almost as if
(02:03:39):
he wanted to get kicked out. A lot of people
said it was the same motif Operandyny you know, caused
him a follow a favorite other cities across the NFL,
and it was a repeat of that behavior here with
the Texans. And yeah, I mean, you know, these are
things that can cost you your job. Ultimately, they're on
in three. They don't need more of problems, you know,
(02:04:01):
behind the scenes. So they've shown this before, they will
move on if they're having an issue Like Deontay Johnson.
We watched him out after a playoff game that they
won because he didn't get the ball enough and he
was promptly fired. So there are consequences at Kirby Drive
if you don't do things the way you that they
want you to. And so I would say, yeah, there's
(02:04:23):
there is discipline and this is discipline related. They already
restructured his contract. They have to eat the money. I
don't have that in front of me. I'm just kind
of scrambled down and the appointments are prite. His story,
but yeah, it's it's not good obviously, and the next
man up is in Jaster problem.
Speaker 2 (02:04:41):
Yeah, so so Aaron, the defense is disappointed. But it
hasn't been atrocious. I mean it's been you know, there's
been some mistackles, a couple of plays here and there.
What was his biggest bitch? And can you I'm asking
you to side with him because I don't think there's
a way too. But what what is going through his
mind that got him so irritated?
Speaker 6 (02:05:00):
He had a certain expectation of what he thought his
role and the way he saw himself as a player
in the defense, and that did not coincide with how
the team saw him. And so when you got that
kind of disconnect, Matt, you know, you can either not
put up with it or you can decide we're gonna
move on. Whit surprised me if he'd asked to be released.
(02:05:22):
I have not heard that yet, efforting that, you know,
as I continue to report throughout the day, but had
asked for a trade previously, so we'll see what happened here.
But he wasn't happy.
Speaker 2 (02:05:38):
Yeah, can you give us at ross with you as well? Eric,
Can you give us any similance of a timeline like
when when? When did this? I mean, was this from
from the word go? How long did this take to
come to a boil?
Speaker 6 (02:05:49):
When I started hearing stuff, it was after the Rams game.
I don't know what happened for that I heard. I've
heard that, you know, there was some concern about how
he was fit. That was when he joined the team.
There was some concern after you joining the team that hey,
this may not work out from the different people close
to the situation. And then it really started to go
(02:06:09):
downhill after they lose to the Rams, and that was
a game where he blamed other people for the touchdown
that was allowed. It feared to be you know, his
coverage area. There was things like that. It was a
lot of finger pointing, and I think in Oin three
they're just not gonna put up with it. It was
interesting because he just did a Instagram live where he
(02:06:30):
talked about Romos and built in a day fan stick
with us. I believe that was just a day ago.
So now for this to be over and for them
to push the button on this, obviously something happened. But
you know, I'm not gonna put no more than I do.
I just I'm telling you that there was there were problems,
and I don't know what else, you know, Jamik Ryans
might say about it tomorrow, Obviously it'll be a major topic.
(02:06:52):
Did the reaction from the locker room and talk to
the guys that will replace him, I'll see. Hopefully there's
some defensive backs there too to address this. But you know,
he you know, these are things normally that he gets
you in trouble, no matter how talented you are. He
was definitely, I'm told, complaining a lot. He wanted to
blitz more. He was critical of teammates performance. He thought
(02:07:15):
some guys were making too much money. I mean he
went in, Wow, he's he's very opinionated. And then all
that happened, and he's extremely nice to us as far
as like, you know, he was polite and there any
issues with him. He was answer his questions, he would
hold court, he was entertaining. But yeah, we're not working
with him, we're just covering him. So obviously these things
(02:07:37):
run people the wrong way. I was told that by
five different people that there was a problem. They just
couldn't predict you. No, how is the team going to
react to it? Obviously now they have and it's over.
The CJ gunder John Sara in Houston lasted three games.
Speaker 2 (02:07:58):
Aaron Wilson KPRC too was on Sports Talk seven ninety
so what does this mean going forward? Do we know
that there was the the no Bill Jimmy Ward thing
going on there? Does this is Jimmy Ward coming back?
And do you think that factoring in is the decision?
What's going on there?
Speaker 6 (02:08:14):
They could get him back at some point, get him
back in the mix. He is, though still not one
hundred percent ready he's just healthy, he's you know, doing well.
He's just you know, he's not eligible right now. He
needs another week at least on the PEP list. So
it's gonna be a couple of weeks. It's not gonna
happen right now. But yeah, at some point, do I
see him getting to make sure MG Stewart has the
(02:08:35):
opportunity if he plays well, to get this job. And
I think that that's kind of you know, you may
even see at some point, you know, what is you know,
do they look at Jayden Reid. There's a lot of
things that can happen.
Speaker 2 (02:08:50):
So how did he play? In your opinion? Just okay?
Speaker 6 (02:08:55):
He didn't really make any earth sharing plays he was
He's playing okay.
Speaker 2 (02:09:00):
And how is the guy that has bounced around from
team to team to team, how does his agent try
to find him a spot?
Speaker 6 (02:09:06):
I mean, I mean when he joined the team, I
was told for him to get another year here, it
was going to have to be like perfect type of situation,
Like I mean, like he's going to have to really
toe the line, and I think it was hard for
him to do that. You just you know, ultimately, I'm
(02:09:30):
not a psychologist, but you.
Speaker 2 (02:09:31):
Are where you are right.
Speaker 6 (02:09:33):
We'll have our own behaviors, our own idiosyncrasies. Nobody's perfect,
but there are certain basic standards of professionalism and in
the Texans mind, and you know, I don't think this
is them being weird at all.
Speaker 9 (02:09:47):
I mean.
Speaker 6 (02:09:49):
Imagine, like, let's say you work with someone and they
said that you're not going to the radio, you're not
a good teammate and you just shouldn't make so much
money and you shouldn't you they should get more airtime,
And I mean, how long will that the fly at
iHeart Radio and seven ninety be texting?
Speaker 2 (02:10:08):
You've been texting with Ross way too much lately. Yeah,
that was between us, Aaron, that was between us. Man,
I'm sorry you can't Burson, you know that.
Speaker 6 (02:10:19):
Yeah that guys, just clear that with me. Yeah, you know, uh,
trying to be relationable about the irrelatable about this and
just uh your conversational but yeah, there is no issue.
Speaker 2 (02:10:33):
We're kidding. Well, thank you Aaron for the update on
short notice. Again, we owe you a large lunch with
appetizer coming up with the non too distant future. Friends,
thank you for the visit. We appreciate you.
Speaker 6 (02:10:42):
Ready, if you text me whatever you.
Speaker 2 (02:10:43):
Want I will do well. We'll get it down before
the end of the season for sure, or maybe after
the season. You may be available, like in early January.
Our afternoons are going to free up pretty soon. Here
well his mighty too, so Sundays won't be too busy
after a while.
Speaker 7 (02:10:57):
C J.
Speaker 2 (02:10:57):
Garner Johnson gone gone. Seriously, I'm telling you Demico wants
to throw hands with people, but must somebody else's pay.
That's dead, It's crazy. Seriously, what a bad due well
look and that obviously Demiko wants a certain culture in
the locker room. Laraman Tunzel didn't fit it. CJ. Garner
Johnson does not fit it either. Stefon Diggs didn't fit it.
(02:11:20):
Everybody said he was great, No they didn't, and he
tore his a cl Yeah, these are these are quote
unquote team captains all right on the phones. Next, Ross's
NFL rewinding, got away for another week. You'll be rewinding
two weeks of NFL Star. Okay, we're gonna talk to
our friend Biscuit.
Speaker 6 (02:11:34):
Next.
Speaker 2 (02:11:35):
You guys want to get in as well. Are the
Texans imploding?
Speaker 6 (02:11:40):
Excellent?
Speaker 2 (02:11:42):
Open ended, don't even don't even have Let's see they're
owing three they're getting worse by the week, and they
just let go one of their big off season acquisitions.
I'll let you all into that. Mull it over. Seven one, three.
You know what, we could invite Aaron to go to
out to see us in Cyprus on Thursday. We're gonna
be at Big City Wings at twenty three thirty. Tuckerton
(02:12:03):
Road was a very busy ten to two show in
terms of news headlines. I mean, we get screwed in
almost every major trade. But we got Mike Gundhy fired
to dat Oklahoma State. We got the ABS challenge system
in place in baseball huge, and we got CJ. Garner
Johnson being released for being a you know what, Wow,
(02:12:25):
that's good. We did good today. All piled up one.
I mean it could have spread out against it. Yeah,
on three days we could overhead CJ. Released yesterday. We
have dosed it out. That's true. We're binging on news
or news binging, which means we're gonna get nothing for
like many don't even worry about that. Let's talk about
the show now. Let's go maybe five and five and one.
(02:12:45):
I'm team five and one. Maybe let's go team five
and one, not Texans five what was the third bit
of news you said, c J Garner, Johnson, ABS and
Mike Gundy. Oh yeah, Mike Gundy. Hmm. Yeah, we've been
wearing out that breaking news sounder. It's true. Okay, hold on,
we'll quickn't it individually? Would you if you were doing
(02:13:06):
three for CD Gardner, one for ABS or two apiece
A BS is three? Oh, it's a massive rule change.
I agree, Gundhis two is historical, Gundy's two, but because
we're in Texas neighboring state, it's three. CJ. Gardner's three.
All three's today. Wow, what do you think great? I
(02:13:27):
think so. Yeah. I mean in the history of baseball,
it's been balls and strikes by the umpire. It's a
major change. Yeah, we knew it's coming. It's it's I
guess it's not that huge breaking because we knew it
was on the way. But still, as far as they
could have also said no, as we're not ready for
a historic moment in baseball history for sure. Let's go
to Biscuit on seven Ony Biscuit, good afternoon.
Speaker 3 (02:13:47):
Do you.
Speaker 6 (02:13:49):
Top of them?
Speaker 13 (02:13:50):
Even in the afternoon?
Speaker 21 (02:13:51):
My brothers ay, before I get to my CJ, take
a cougar man. I'm watching the w the other night,
man when I find this man. She good sideline reporter.
Speaker 2 (02:14:01):
For Oh Vanessa. Yeah, we're very happy for her. Yeah,
she's been doing some w NBA silent reporting. It's good
for her from my hometown.
Speaker 6 (02:14:08):
So I'm always looking following her.
Speaker 2 (02:14:10):
By the way, are we ready? I think that there's
still a good chance we're getting WNBA basketball here, and
I know it'll be some people that'll be excited about it.
I don't know if there'll be a massive run for it,
but there'll be some people that'll be excited for it,
I think.
Speaker 3 (02:14:22):
So.
Speaker 6 (02:14:23):
I think it's a market for it.
Speaker 21 (02:14:24):
And if you checked that, I don't know if you
checked that into the game, that they's the playoff.
Speaker 2 (02:14:28):
Game that sold out. Even so, I will say this
for where the league is today compared to where it
was when I was calling games, I mean, Ross night
and day is an understated I mean such a big
difference there. I mean they're the again. It's still it's
nothing close to the NBA game, but it's a lot.
I mean, it has really improved. And I will give them.
(02:14:49):
I will give the league, the sport, the instruction, the athletes, credit.
There are some Kaitlyn Clark's the star. There's no other
way around it. She's she's a star that transcends her sport.
And when you when you have a player like that,
it does so you gotta give them their flowers, right.
Speaker 14 (02:15:05):
Getting the CJ Man and I got a you know,
I'm a Cowboy fan, so I know a little bit
and a couple of my buddies and my nephew with
Eagle fans, and I asked them when they made the trade,
and a lot of them, man, they were you know,
they could see it coming because he's a mouth content.
Speaker 6 (02:15:21):
Right, He's one of those guys that thinks he's better
than what he actually is.
Speaker 20 (02:15:26):
And he wouldn't have got cut man if he was
playing well. But he ain't playing well, and then you're
gonna talk noise too. I think the friction and the
insider didn't say it, but I think he want.
Speaker 6 (02:15:39):
To play Petri's role. But you know, to me, called
likes Petrie Man.
Speaker 21 (02:15:44):
He wants to be up around moving this because he's
not good in.
Speaker 13 (02:15:47):
Space and he gets beat and so he wants to
play up front. And you know, to me, oh, he's
the captain of the ship. Man, he ain't gonna tell
him what to do, and so hit the dog Jack.
That's what this is.
Speaker 2 (02:16:00):
Well, I you cannot look I and thank you Biscuit
for the phone call. Rossie. I really believe that Demko
is a super super players coach. A lot of those
ex NBA x NFL coaches are, they are we. I
know what you go through. I know the grind that
I did it myself. I'm gonna overly defend you, but
(02:16:22):
I'm gonna be tough on you because I'm tough on myself.
And when you got a brand new cat coming in
here telling him who should play. If the story is
true about he's he's money pocket watching people, I mean
that's crazy. There is no room in an NFL locker
room for pocket watching. There just isn't. That's pretty insane.
(02:16:44):
Do I believe it? One?
Speaker 10 (02:16:49):
C J.
Speaker 2 (02:16:49):
Garner Johnson played for a Super Bowl champion, Rossie, and
they're like, we don't need you get out. Yeah. I
mean the my initial thought and the reports were that
he was a cap casualty because I mean, they need to.
They were up against it, were the Eagles, but probably
(02:17:11):
help move him along because he had it was a
one year twenty sorry, three year, twenty seven million dollars
deal he signed with the Eagles. He was one year
into that and then got traded away New Orleans, Philadelphia, Detroit,
back to Philadelphia to Houston and now looking for his
sixth different spot. And he was a twenty nineteen fourth
(02:17:32):
round pick and he is pocket watching Caserio. When's the
when's he gonna sargon? When's when's the burner gonna turn
up on him? I think it is right now. It
needs to sing three. I know there can be some
issues out of the where, but no, no, no, there's issues.
Speaker 6 (02:17:50):
What was that?
Speaker 2 (02:17:51):
That was just me doing tarrital impersonation. Okay, you're right, No,
I'm not good any coffee bit Actually, okay, I've been
trying to cut back on my coffee and it's not working.
We gonna get better, sleep maney I know, deep breaths,
I'm trying to get you to relax for ten years
and that's not gonna happen. I'm just who I am.
(02:18:11):
I'm just charged. I got a big volleyball game tonight. Okay,
I get my five and one week is gonna start tonight. Yeah, Oh,
you're all five and one for that of course. Yeah.
I hope you're right, me too. I don't want I
don't want to not talk about place playoff baseball because
guess what we're gonna do in Houston. We're not gonna
at the Astros domain. We're not gonna care about the
(02:18:32):
baseball playoffs. You're not gonna get as much calls about
the American and nationally playoffs as we got for the
Detroit Baltimore game last night.
Speaker 14 (02:18:39):
What is zero?
Speaker 13 (02:18:43):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (02:18:44):
We are such ah, we are such a Houston centric town.
If it ain't not about us, we don't care about
anybody else. I don't know. That's my Gundy. Stuff's interesting.
He gone, he gone, Mike gandhy believe it or not?
Is up next? Ross gotta get working. Come on now
seven on three two one two five seven ninety seven
(02:19:05):
one three two one two five seven ninety If you
want to play but believe it or not, all things
might Gundy, that's next here on seven ninety tomorrow on
the show Rossy, we have Brian Bogus seven. That's a
big get right there tomorrow. Shut your bomb ass upthing,
(02:19:28):
make news it now. Hmm maybe Eddie noon, Yes, I
thought a director at the University of Houston. There are
some cranky Cougar fans that are pissed that all the
text tech fans are buying the tickets. Then you don't
want to go buy them first. It is very simple,
it's very simple. Enrollment's over forty k. That's what the
(02:19:49):
stadium holds. Let's get in there, folks. Yeah. If you don't,
if you don't want text tech infiltrating the stadium, then
just buy the tickets. And I know we josh a
lot about Cougar's fans, but can't I mean, seriously, no, no, no, no,
I'm being a one percent series to you. We don't
have enough people that care. We just don't. Why why why?
Speaker 1 (02:20:05):
Why?
Speaker 2 (02:20:05):
You're three? And oh, Willie Fritz is a good hire.
He's an excellent hire. He'll be on the show. Conter
Wegman is an exciting name. Yeah. Yeah, this is a
big game against a known you know, you just don't
have a great No, That's what I'm saying. It's like why,
Like I said, I'm not trying to be meant, you know,
like real talk here man will talk, real talk. Why
I don't get it? Our student, our students for the
(02:20:29):
last forty years. Just go to school. They don't live it,
they don't breathe it. Now, granted, there's been a lot
of futility. I mean, how many top twenty five teams
have we had in the last twenty years? Three? All right?
Did our briels du get you on? Someone might have
(02:20:50):
got you? Won er to herman got you one or two?
So five and twenty five years? I mean, come on,
are they Are you in the others receivings votes yet?
I don't know. Well, we'll be up there. We beat
text Tech and hopefully we'll get some top twenty five votes.
If we can beat Orengans State, you gotta beat up
on those beavers. I got, I got, I'm ready to
knock that beaver out.
Speaker 6 (02:21:07):
Let's go.
Speaker 2 (02:21:09):
My point is this, we just we don't we have
a we have a largely uh ambivalent fan base. We're good,
We're good bad, It's all right, Well, we have our diehards.
Are twenty thousand, the diehards the universey Texas, two hunred
and fifty thousand. Let's get those numbers up, maddic. So
(02:21:31):
you know what, if you're a Houston Cougar fan and
you don't want to see text technician filled with building
and go buy the tickets right this second. Very unsimple,
It's very simple, and come on six o'clock on a
Saturday night in early October. Oh, let's go. Did you
say seven to one to three? Go cooks. Yes, that's
so easy with two o's. Folks in n a three nine,
