Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
Speaker 2 (00:09):
Tedos three in h Town. Good morning, and welcome to
a Tuesday Wednesday. What day of the week is this Wednesday? Wednesdayday?
It's a Wednesday dish of Matt Thomas Show. Ross. This
is Sports Talk seven ninety I come to you God
(00:30):
only those. First of all, Paul Simon, one of the
greatest crooners of all time. I didn't want to play
this song. I've had this song on the hit on
the playlist. Hopefully it was not going to happen. Love me,
Paul Simon. You know what. Yeah, we're stuosing our way
(00:51):
to the end of the season. You're right, Ross, that's
exactly right, singing Paul, it's more of a talking Slipslas.
I'm gonna listen to this song a home today. Okay, Well,
I'm gonna sing to it loudly. Don't take any melotonin too.
Speaker 3 (01:12):
Now.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
We went to see Paul Simon and he greatly disappointed
us because I think he fell asleep on stage. I
mean he was just near his eighties, not near it.
He was in the eighties. Okay, now he's infirmly in
the eighties. I mean, I've given a hard time than
I mean, I'm it's more for the bit. It wasn't
that bad. It wasn't that good. It wasn't that good.
(01:33):
And hits there. I mean, yeah, he and Julio are
down by the school yard. He didn't play fifty Ways
to Leave your lover, which is all time. Jam Garfunkle
came out at the end, and that's what the floors.
Speaker 4 (01:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
Arts, Paul's like, get out, I kicked your ass out
of forty years ago. Get out, all right. I have
had to and rass you have it as well. Had
to dodge Astro's Twitter this year at BIC levels. Woo
you button's been on fire. We have had to dodge
(02:07):
Joe Aspy Joe a spot as a bad coach calls. Yes,
Uh the team is trying to lose intentionally to get
Joe as spot of fired. Yes, I took one of
those last night.
Speaker 5 (02:17):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
Large amounts of hitting coaches must be fired in court.
And I've I've I've worked my way through that maze
because I am a I mean, I don't mean to brag,
but I'm an accomplished sports broadcaster. You are, You're very accomplished, man.
I have been there through good times that in bad
thank you. By the way, I did not make nominees
(02:40):
for the Astros Media Wall of Honor yet again this year,
which is fine. That's okay. You're in the main Creek
Hall of Fame that I am sometime value that tremendously. Seriously. Yeah,
I mean I can never take that away from the
shout out to you make Greek High School. They'll never
take that away unless I don't know, you commit some
square of Yeah, they could make his crimes, they could
take my name down. Just don't murder anybody. I thank
you very much. Okay, back to it. I have tried
(03:01):
to have glass half full on this radio show, on
the tenth Inning Show, on my social media m yes,
oh Lauren, good morning. Yesterday was my one was my
breaking point I have. I'm not giving up because that
that's too that's too cheap, that's that's too easy. Especially
when you're in first place and you're in first place.
(03:23):
You can't give up when you didn't give us place.
And again, even if things even get worse, which they could,
they're still in the wild card at least for now.
But again, the teams that are behind them are winning too,
so it's not like the wild Cards, that safe landing space.
But yesterday was as frustrating, pitiful, disgusting, sad on the
(03:46):
on Luis Garcia's front kind of loss that I have
seen and heard for longest per time. Let me let
me preface something ahead of time. My daughters opened up
district play yesterday. We lost a five set match and heartbreaker.
They had triple match point in the four set and
didn't win it. Oh no, they pulled a Yanick center.
(04:07):
So I was already in a surly mood to begin with.
But I'm watching the game on my phone as I'm
announcing the you know, the PA at the high school.
I get in the car, listen to Robert and I'm
listening to Brian a brew ball one ball, two base,
hit ball, three ball, four ball, five strikeout, Brian Bray.
(04:29):
You does it.
Speaker 5 (04:32):
Say?
Speaker 2 (04:33):
I'm trying to I'm trying to measure myself. Let it rip, baby.
I don't trust him. It's the closer. I just don't well.
And I know there's there's the one off, there's the
every closer is gonna have a bad day. I get it.
He ain't looked right in three weeks now, the three
of the last four times he's gone out, he's given
up runs, and the velocity has been down in the
(04:53):
look and he hasn't been able to locate his pitches,
especially his fastball. That tells me he's hitting a little
patch of fatigue. Okay, dead arm or whatever you want
to call it. So I had that his first four
save opportunities, as when he became the closer, he converted
them all. When when Brian A. Bray was on, he's
(05:16):
got ninety seven, he's dotting corners and he's he's hitting
up ninety eight ninety nine, sometimes touching one hundred, but
off and he was throwing ninety five ninety six. Okay,
ninety five ninety six. You can get guys out for
ninety five ninety six, exactly what you said, ninety five
ninety six and way out of the strike zone. That's
when you run into issues, especially when you're a two
pitch pitcher. Yes, and you cannot locate your fastball, then
(05:39):
you gotta go all slider, and you don't have an
off speed. Really, I mean, the slider is a heart
thrown pitch. It's supposed to a darting action. It doesn't
gather a lot of strikes. As you would typically felt
with a slider. You're looking to induce swinging missus for
Toronto team missiles in the broadcast. That doesn't swing a
miss a lot. They don't swing a miss a lot.
And you, as Brian Bray, you don't induce a whole
lot of ground balls and double okay, So that's one issue.
(06:02):
Game goes extra innings. Joseal two Bay at second base
last night, tenth inning ground ball to the first baseman.
That would naturally mean, on a full hustle, going to
second to third base in extra innings, even if it
was an extra innings the chances are you being successful
(06:22):
running from second to third on a ground ball to
first base is really good unless you're Black Guerrel apparently,
and unless jose Al tuo Bay took a secuitest route
or he took off a step away he went to
get a snack. I don't know what it is, but
I have said this five million times. He's my favorite
(06:44):
aster of all not my favorite, he's the greatest aster.
My favorite is on Ryan, but the greatest aster of
all time. I'm done with his base running. It's hot
garbage and I'm disgusted by his base running as you
said before, went on the show. Today he invents new
ways to get thrown out. Yeah, you got to be
(07:05):
impressed with the versatility. No, I've never seen us. Have
you ever seen that guy? First a third and the
tenth inning of a ball game, you're thrown out? No,
I don't see that. No, ross Idon, have you ever
seen a a three six? It's supposed to be a
six three, I'm sorry, three to five. And and so
(07:28):
the Astros closer, first of all, can't close games right now.
Second of all, his pitch count is extraordinarily high, which
means he is Gonzo for today. And Craig Kimball is
just a player. Craig Kimbroll can't get three strike yeads,
can't Craig Kimbro can't induce a pop fly. This bullpen
is again, this is a byproduct. And I go, I'm
(07:50):
gonna be consistent about this. This has been a team
that is a byproduct of too many injuries for too long.
There hasn't been a stretch where this team has been
healthy on a twenty six now twenty seven a man roster.
It's we've gone too far. So that's what I put.
I'm I've lost the faith, and am I get it
back in two days? But I speak to you right
(08:10):
now as an honest and true man, as an Astro
fan since nineteen seventy nine, and it's an Astro observer
and cover and broadcaster since you know, the mid nineties.
I am I need Billy Joe to help me keep
the faith because I ain't got it right now. Uh
yeah uh? And why I would ask you too, to
what extent do you think they're not going to win
(08:31):
the division and miss the playoffs or you just think
they're just not contenders? Because I'm more the latter personally,
I would say, if you're booking October, it because it's
not feeling good right now, I'm not going to hold
you to it. If you're booking October mid October travel plans,
you can feel pretty safe. They don't have that. They
don't have it, they don't have the they don't have
(08:52):
the offense. Christian Walker. I tries it away from Bryan
from Ryan from Jose Bray references, but this team has
sucked at first base in Julie Gurieo's life. I give
you a real life example. I'll tell you where I
am with the team. We'll do that after I take
about the Shell Federal Credit Union.
Speaker 4 (09:09):
I was going to do that too.
Speaker 2 (09:11):
Wow, we're in Sikh for one segment. Yeah, we've got
twelve more to go. We won't be seven one three,
two one two five seven Sports Talk seven ninety All right, Ted,
(09:33):
twenty one of these spilled the water already, I'm already
off to a great start. Look at me.
Speaker 4 (09:38):
All right.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
You were supposed to say something anyway before I interrupted you.
Is there a leak? There's a leak in the cup.
That's the reason why I didn't spill Itess, you've had
no rouse. Get the it's it's spreading like the blob.
There's a nineteen fifties reference for the kids. All right,
if I say the blob, Jonathan, do you have any
clue what I'm talking about? No? But I know, okay,
(10:00):
I know that there's like a hokey scientist, Yeah, science
fiction movie from the fifties where the blob was eating everything.
I know about the Paul Simon song Slip Sliding Away.
Speaker 6 (10:08):
You know it was good. But then I had I
had it just playing. I was eating Mobby Donalds in
the car and I had it just playing over and
over again.
Speaker 2 (10:15):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (10:15):
Then I started getting a headache and I was like,
I can't stand it no more. Like it's like a
good you know, like every other month you put it
on driving around.
Speaker 2 (10:21):
But it's it's it's I think it's fan once a quarter.
We're playing it again to twelve o'clock, so be ready
for that. It was your quarter. Here's your quarterly pol Simon.
Speaker 6 (10:31):
It's a good if, it's a good vibe, if you're
feeling that way, if you're slip siding the way.
Speaker 2 (10:34):
I am slip signing away what I'm saying. Yeah, it
fits it fits them out. My astros are they're leading
a slip sliding away. It is okay. Yeah. So I'm
gonna tell you it's funny because to kind of you know,
sometimes subconsciously you feel certain ways and then something happens
or you re act a certain way and you're like, oh, okay,
I didn't realize that. So every year, the Oklahoma Texas
(10:56):
game is the first weekend of October, generally your first
or second week week, and every year the last several years,
I've been like, I can't plan it. I don't have
to do, you know, I don't want to get tickets
because I never know if the Astros are gonna be
going deep into playoffs. And then so I was talking
to my brother like a week ago, I'm like, all right, yeah,
let's start planning everything. And I was like, oh no,
(11:18):
that's how little confidence I have in the Astros. I'm
already ready to start planning this OU trip without even realizing.
So I'm ready to book hotels and get tickets. And
if the Astros are still it would be game five
of the Alds I think would be Texas. OU. Let's
(11:38):
just say I am feeling as safe as I had
and of having a very long time and planning this
OU Texas trip. And Dan Matthews might be coming with
us as well. Shout out, Dan, Come get some Fletcher's
corny dogs. Have a good time, wat a chip? Dan drive?
Is he a good driver? I don't know, but I
don't want to drive anywhere, so oh drive? I mean
I don't mind driving. Okay. Point being for me is this,
(12:00):
this is to me, if you were to take the
if you were to split the aggravation pie which I'm
currently eating right here, on the Astros seventy percent of
its injuries, I would agree I'm having injury fatigue because
every one of the pictures that was supposed to come
and this is this should be a formula for future
analysis when you rely on injured pitchers. There at least
(12:25):
I can give you the twenty twelve twenty five example.
They're not going to come save your day. Arraghetti done
for the season, Garcia maybe done forever. Tavier has been
mid mccullors has been bad, has been bad. Who am
I forgetting Colton brand Walton Brandon Walter got hurt? But
I mean I'm talking about the guys that are like, oh,
(12:46):
they're oh, JP France is back, Okay, Well JP France, Yeah,
I mean it is what it is. I'm not going
to do that anymore. I am done. Is So, if
you are a team that needs pitching at the deadline,
maybe Dana has learned from this as well, you can't
just say, well, I'm getting my healthy guys back. You're
going to be more proactive. But that isn't even the Reallyshuy.
(13:07):
The issue is the Astros offense has been a D
plus this year. It really has. If you were to
grate out the Astros offense D plus. Now when you
have you're on an albare has gone for one hundred games.
That hurts. Jeremy Payne has been gone a certain length
of time that hurts. Diaz is starting to hit a
little bit. Al Tube has in a horrific slump. Camp
(13:29):
Smith has been the same since spring training. Frankly Walker
has expectations weren't spectacular, but these not didn't reach the
minimal expectations. Who am I forgetting? Cray has been okay? Uh,
he's been good. Yeah, I mean that whole money yesterday
was a he's mad close to an ops close to
(13:50):
eight as an Astro. Uh, but let's start without you
first said, I think if we might wave the magic
wand uh in late July and gave the Astros one
of the best farm systems on the planet, they would
have made us a move for a starting pitcher. I
think Dana Brown was like, oh, we're all good, all
these guys are coming back. I think it was I
think it was like, you know what, you kind of
have to rely on these guys because because they wanted
(14:12):
Spencer Area, what did the what are those dealing seasteal
was Spencer Ragedtty plus three prospects? You got, you got
Arroghetty under control. Unfortunately, he's hurt, but Owen, you know
what I'm saying, under control until like twenty twenty eight.
That's just too much to give up for one rental
of Dylan Ceas, so they couldn't make a move there unfortunately.
And then yes, the the hitting has not been consistent,
(14:36):
and and and I keep going. We can go up
and down the line up. As you said, Jeremy Ping
is having a breakout year, but he missed a little
bit of time with the Ribs. Jodne Alva has been fantastic,
but he's missed a hundred plus games. Carl's Corey has
been good, but he's only been on the team for
like a month. Al Chuve, when do we go from
the word slump to decline because we have a full
(14:57):
season sample of last year it was his worst ops since,
like he was like coming up out of double A. See,
I can't do that because he still leads a team
in home run. He's got twenty four hours, He's still
he can get on a on a hot streak as
fast as anybody can, especially when when people are saying
it's over for him. So I will continue to say
(15:18):
it's a slump. The base running is on a slump.
It's a epidemic. Yeah, that's that's not going that's degenerative.
That's not going away. But I mean several years ago,
I don't know, around twenty twenty one or whatever, he
kind of changed his approach to where he was the
hit king, where he was spraying everything everywhere, to where
(15:40):
he became a more pull power hitter because he was
getting a little bit older. So, yes, the power has
been there. Twenty four home runs for Josel twova a
age thirty five, that's damn good. But everything else has
basically gone down his ops the last three years nine fifteen, seven,
ninety seven, sixty seven and he's thirty five years old.
(16:01):
Now can he wake up? Can I say this on
air and that he's in decline and then he wakes
up and he gets eight hits in the next three games? Absolutely?
Can I say that at the Astros win the division
that Jozel two is gonna be a large part of that.
Absolutely can't. Yes, but we were into one hundred and
forty five game sample here and Walker's Walkers in decline.
(16:21):
Unfortunately you got you didn't get a break. You'd quite
Oh I forgot to mention Paradis, who has been a
delightful surprise. It hasn't been seen in too much Essak
Paratus was your one of your best hitters, if not
your best hitter. When he went down and in his
hamstring came off his bone. Jake Myers was having this
breakout crazy season and then he went down with a
(16:42):
calf injury and he freaking got robbed by Dalton var
Show with a deep hit to center yesterday. That's another thing. Yeah,
he went two for eleven with runners in the scoring position.
And I keep saying this on postgame shows, but they
keep adding up. Matt If the Astros are five games
in the first place and they lost this game like
that yesterday, but man two for eleven running score position,
a lot of hard hit contact their ex I know
you don't like XBA, but their XBA in the game
(17:03):
was three forty one. It was like two oh four
for the Blue Jays. They had hard hit balls, they
just found gloves and we would say that's baseball. But
because this keeps happening, and because this keeps piling up,
it's harder and harder to say that. It's just like,
when is this going to turn? When is this going
to get better more consistently, and we and it's just
this malaise that they've been in so now where they're
(17:25):
twenty three and thirty two in their last fifty five games,
best I've lost of faith. And I apologize because I'm
supposed to. I think I'm supposed to be that even
keel now. And look, they can finish off the road
trip with five wins and it'd be great. But yesterday's
loss was exceptionally exacerbating. Uh, you couldn't find the zone. Uh,
(17:50):
you had a two vase base running mistake. You had
Christian Walker with opportunities to eleven with running the scoring
position the same risp that's the runnings in scoring position
was a disaster. Yeah, and you just and you and
you knew that when the game was going extra innings
that there isn't a reliable reliever behind a bray You
who struggled terribly yesterday, that was going to be able
to keep the game close. Yeah, that's another thing. This
(18:12):
middle of the season. You had three reliable back end relievers,
Josh Hater out, Brian A. Brayton not reliable right now,
and Bennett Sue's out. That's what I was saying it's
a lot of his injuries. Your depth in your relief corp,
which was a strong suit for this team for much
of the season, I mean first half of the season.
This bullpen was nails. All right, those of you on hole,
we're going to you next seven one three, two, one
(18:32):
two five seven ninety seven to one three two, one
two five seven out. It's ten thirty. It's Matt Ross,
Brian Bugacevic with us at eleven o'clock. Shut your bull
mass up. At eleven thirty. We're going after the media
at eleven thirty. Out of town media at eleven thirty
for social bumb mass up, although I can probably find
it out look in this town really quick. Uh. And
Willie Fritz at one thirty, what are you laughing about?
(18:57):
This is your fuddy? That's all that well? I Fritz
and the cops taking on cattle out of this Friday.
We'll talk to Willie at one thirty plus I know
plus believe it or not today at one fifty. Busy
show here on Sports Talk seven ninety. All right, a
lot of you our own hold, let's go to you.
You've had a chance to listen to us, bitch and
moan and like I said, I might be in a
better mood tomorrow. Hopefully I will be. I may be
in a better mood three or four days. I don't know.
(19:19):
But this is his closest get in. The Rangers both
won yesterday, as did the Mariners. Uh and the and
the Astros long the game's leads one game. How huge
is that they're playing next weekend and they're playing what uh?
What did you say? Twenty three and thirty two now
since July fourth? Yes, so that's was it four to
(19:40):
twenty five baseball? Something like that?
Speaker 7 (19:44):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (19:44):
Four eighteen to the phone Robert in Stafford at ten
thirty six on seven ninty Robert, Good.
Speaker 8 (19:52):
Morning, Good morning, Matt and Ross. All Right, you're saying
we have to listen to your mood, the way you
are today tomorrow, and what you need to listen to
yourself when you talk about the Astros or any any
any Rockets or Texanus. What you're saying, how you're feeling,
(20:15):
and then I have to listen to that. I think
you need to kind of kind of hold back a
little bit and say, hey, what do you think they're
they're feelings?
Speaker 9 (20:25):
How they are?
Speaker 8 (20:26):
You know, it's tecically and mentally, you know, and if
they make a mistake and then and they lose or
you kind of like the rubber end and in a
in a nice way, you know, I'm just saying, you're,
you know, like another another time.
Speaker 2 (20:43):
Time out, Timeout, Robert. What do you want me to
what do you okay, Stap? What do you want me
to do? I I I close the radio show. Listen,
let me finish. I I do a radio show for
four hours a day where my explicit duties are to
discuss the events of sports. And no one gives two
craps about the NFL next step for the Texans. No
(21:05):
one gives two craps about anything non Houston related on
this Houston rated show. So when guess what we're doing.
We're talking about Houston sports. And when my baseball team
that I follow and discuss and have been a fantom
since I was a kid, blows a three to one
lead in the ninth inning to a very good team
that helps him hold on to first place, I'm not
gonna hold back. What do you mean hold back? I
(21:26):
don't get that.
Speaker 8 (21:28):
Well, it's like, what if they win? How do you talk?
Are you hurt? I mean, did that kind of bother
you more. No, you say, well, they want and then
they might win again, but they can't win and win
and win and win and win. Okay, and no, don't
don't give up, you know, don't give up type I say, hey,
I listened to you. If I listened to you, that's good,
(21:50):
that is good.
Speaker 2 (21:50):
I appreciate that very much.
Speaker 7 (21:53):
Uh But but no, no, I'm not.
Speaker 8 (21:55):
You know, I'll just try it.
Speaker 2 (21:57):
I think I mean, honestly, Robert, I think I've been
pretty reserved. Honestly, I think I have given the benefit
of the doubt. And thank you Astros Twitter for five minutes. Yeah,
and you're gonna hear that Matt and I are the
most optimistic Astros fan that we're like at the fifth
percentile of optimism. Yeah, I have. I think I have.
I have been very very uh wait and see, don't
(22:19):
the sky's not falling guy, And I'm not saying it's
even falling now. Yeah, but yesterday was a kick in
the knots. It just was their pitcher left with elbow
inflammation and they blew the game in the end of
the game and they lost in ten innings and it
was a heartbreaker. And as I said, they're twenty three
and uh, what was it? Twenty three and thirty two?
In the last fifty five games, they're playing four eighteen
ball for fifty five games out of one hundred and
(22:41):
sixty two game season. I think robbers misunderstanding what this
show is. This is not pomp Palm's and cheerleaders show
and everything's gonna be all right show. This is Matt
and I or we're at a sports bar. We're talking
to each other and how we feeling. We're not feeling great.
I was sick to my stomach when the Rockets lost
the Golden State Warriors. They won three games in the series,
(23:01):
but they lost four. I was passed. I don't want
them to lose.
Speaker 5 (23:04):
Man.
Speaker 2 (23:04):
Have you been an astro fan your whole life? My
entire well since I was seven, Matt, I've been an
Astro fan my whole life. Okay, I want them to win. Yeah, Ross,
how long you've been a Texans fan? Two years? Okay?
You ask me and Matt how long you've been a
Texans fan? Never? So when they when they win, they lose,
they lose. Well, I mean means looking for that, even Keel,
(23:24):
it's been a rough two year. Well, I haven't been
that rough, but it's been a stagnant couple of years.
It's a Monday and must wing game. Shut up, all right?
Speaker 5 (23:31):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (23:32):
Carl and Dickinson at ten thirty nine on The Matt
Thomas Show with Ross Carl, Good morning, Hey.
Speaker 10 (23:38):
I just got a question for you.
Speaker 7 (23:40):
Uh.
Speaker 11 (23:40):
I know this is hard to believe, but it is.
I don't know what day to Brandon's smoking. I want
some of that jolly locked in with if she's got
any for sale.
Speaker 10 (23:50):
Kid put anyway?
Speaker 11 (23:53):
Uh yeah, man, that was a disaster. I love the
Astros too, but that was ridiculous. And I'm gonna say it.
I'm gonna be the horses ass. Somebody's gotta be the
horses ass. I'm gonna be it today. Those three or
four guys keep doing the same.
Speaker 10 (24:12):
Thing over and over and over. We get runners on
the base.
Speaker 11 (24:15):
That game should have been seven to one, maybe two.
Spreen would have got lucky and got two home runs.
That game should have been I don't care if a
Bray who did screw up.
Speaker 10 (24:25):
We should have had seven runs.
Speaker 11 (24:28):
That is unacceptable and I'm tired of all of cheerleading
from Dana Brown. Okay, and the stupid mistakes that veterans
are making. Now, I'm gonna give Altuve a pass, and
I'm gonna give our veterans from the past. They have
been hitting the ball, they're getting on base, the bases
were he we had runners all game long. Okay, I'm
(24:49):
giving our regulars a pass. But those four guys that
Dana Brown brought in, I'm telling.
Speaker 10 (24:55):
You they're they're they're.
Speaker 11 (24:57):
Washed up, Okay, I mean it, And they're killing the Astros.
Speaker 10 (25:01):
I'm sorry.
Speaker 11 (25:02):
I love the Astros unless I'm not. I'm looking for
a miracle, but I don't know if it's coming.
Speaker 2 (25:08):
Oh, which, which four guys are you talking about that
are washed up?
Speaker 10 (25:13):
Well, I don't want to say their names.
Speaker 2 (25:15):
You have to say no, no, they're listening the trust me.
You can say their name. It'll be okay.
Speaker 11 (25:22):
Okay, Well they're up and down now Sanchez, he got
a blast, Okay, but you're Rious and Walker? Uh what's
the other two guys that's still in camp?
Speaker 10 (25:35):
Smith's he's been in and out.
Speaker 5 (25:37):
He got it.
Speaker 10 (25:38):
What's a home run?
Speaker 11 (25:38):
But those four guys are inconsistent. We need a big
hitter at the bottom of the lineup to get these
guys in.
Speaker 10 (25:46):
You know and L two am. Like I said, I'm
giving him a pass.
Speaker 2 (25:49):
Why he's running at the third base was awful yesterday?
He's why does he get a pass? I love he's
the greatest master of all time. No, but if in
the studio, it's like, what the hell are you doing
for second to third?
Speaker 12 (26:02):
Dan?
Speaker 10 (26:02):
I understand totally.
Speaker 11 (26:05):
I'm mad about it too, But what I mean he
kept us going during the season when we were having
all the ups and downs. I mean, you know, yes,
we want a lot of games for us man, but uh,
he'll come around. But I'm right now, I'm not playing
in any city.
Speaker 10 (26:21):
Uh, I'm gonna make my regular plans.
Speaker 11 (26:24):
I'm giving up, man, I'm not gonna get myself tore
up anymore.
Speaker 2 (26:28):
Go get that Mexican vacation knocked out. Go down to Cancun.
Go do all inclusive. That's nice. I've never been all inclusive, Matt.
You you of all people like getting waited on hand
and foot when they say all inclusive? Is there really
mean you don't get at your wallet out ever?
Speaker 7 (26:42):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (26:43):
You tip? So it's really nice. The bartender, Okay, can't
you can't tell us a bartender a couple of paces
at the reservation to life is just you know what,
I'm working. I got two jobs, Baby, I gotta go. Hey,
your bartender makes you drink your tip, that's how go John.
I'm sorry. Welcome to the real world, Jonathan. Jonathan a
(27:04):
great tipper.
Speaker 6 (27:05):
No no, no, no, no, no, no, that's not no. I'm
a moral tipper. If you moral, I'm gonna give you
a good tip. You know what I mean, Like I'm not. No,
if you do a good service, I'm gonna be genuine.
But if you're not, if you're gonna if you're gonna
BS me, then I'm gonna b su all right, Well,
why you.
Speaker 2 (27:20):
Are you assuming you're getting bs at the whole? Mean,
let me let's talk through this. Let's tell mister bartender,
I would like a Gin and tonic. What kind of
BS give you?
Speaker 6 (27:28):
Like Carter you, I'm more shocked that you do that
at the reservation as well, Like, you know, the.
Speaker 2 (27:35):
The reservation, alright, we're not going to chuck that. Why
are you talking stick? No, the resort. You're you're surprised
that you tip at the resort when they make.
Speaker 6 (27:48):
You it's all paid, If it's all paid, like I
did you know, I'm just surprised that.
Speaker 2 (27:52):
Have you been on a cruise. All right, you're just
cruise twelve? Okay, oh yeah we were. We were you
tipping the bartenders?
Speaker 4 (27:58):
No?
Speaker 2 (27:59):
I had? Okay, well a lot of times cruises you
buy the you can buy the food package and all that,
and yes, you tip your weight staff and you tip
your bartenders. Again, I'll tell you it's it's to help
them make a living wage. That's why tipping exists. And
you don't have to. All right, that compulsory. You can
opt out if you want. Mark and Kenneth. We'll get
to you next. Brian bogus Sevic at fifteen shirt minutes.
(28:21):
I don't know if he's gonna be able to get
us off this ledge. I like how Yeah, somebody's tweeting
about how Cam Smith is old and washed up. Yeah,
well he's one of the four we couldn't name the
two of the guy. It's fine, all right. Seven one, three, two, two, five,
seven ninety. I'm watching MLB Network. The Rangers are fourteen
and four in their last eighteen games. I think this
(28:45):
is a day to enterteen and four. No, because this
is this was days were yesterday, maybe from yesterday. I
don't know, well, you know what, let's let's let's treat
it as it's really happened. So thirteen and four in
their last seventeen unless he's a Dave Raymonds at the
ballpark at ten am, that's just like he would be
there a ten o'clock in the morning. I think, So, well,
you know what, do they have a day game today?
They could? Okay, so let's go. Let's go off. Thirteen
(29:07):
and four in the last seventeen games of the Rangers
are averaging six runs a game. They have twenty six
home runs during that seventeen. They play the Brewers at
one on MLB Networks. Okay, so that's right, and their
era for the Rangers is three point zero eight. Damn it.
Nobody said it was gonna be easy, and you DV again,
I kind of I said this, I think yesterday or
earlier this week. It's either they're gonna either earn it
(29:30):
or they or not. It's been in front of them.
They didn't take care of business against the Rangers. They're
not they're not catching bad breaks exactly well, injury wise,
of course. Exactly injury wise, of course, but they could
have won more of those games. Uh. In Arlington. They
could have won that game last night. They didn't step
up to the play and come through enough. You get
(29:51):
eleven opportunities of runners in scoring position and you didn't
come through. By the way Brian sends me a tweet,
depends on the all inclusive. Any sandals properties tips are
prohibited by their rules. They pay their pipe of people
a good wage. That's good, and you give them kudos
and a good rating for an employee, which will get
them a bonus. Normally, you know what I would rather do,
and this is just everybody's done for that. I would
rather you charge me more and say do not get
(30:12):
your pot, your your wallet out. Yeah, that's good, that's
a good I would much rather do it, and I
would rather pay more and give them the tips. There's
no awkwardness, yes, but I will say so when I
went to uh Korean Taiwan, there's no tip. You don't tip.
But also you get some rude service every now and then,
so I mean, lady's like slapping your hand away from
when you're trying to grab the tongs and flip the barbecue.
(30:34):
Korean barbecue. By the way, I almost treated this to you,
and I was like, I'm not gonna do it because
I'm already in a bad mood. Your friend Kyle Tucker
is on the injured list for the Yeah Cubs. He's
got a calf injury. Yes, do we have any kind
of prognosis on how long he's going to be I
saw this never going to play again. Okay, yeah, that
could be good for you. You're you're looking for your
(30:55):
only He's not going to sign a five year deal somewhere,
so you get a three four year without doubts, you
could win your bet. I want this result quickly for
two reasons, Okay. One I want to win the bet,
and two I love Korean barbecue. Oh we're going to habachi?
I thought, oh, haibachi. That's true. Well, also, but if
it drags on, that's also probably good for you. Yes,
(31:18):
because we've seen because those those late signing guys, Bragman
being one of them, he would he signed like a
week before spring training even started. Basically, that's your hope
is that it does drag out. If you hear breaking
news the day after the season's over, it's probably not
good for you. I want to I want to tell
you this is an oath we have between the two
of us. Okay, we've been friends for a long time.
(31:39):
The winner of the bet, huh brags enormously. No, I'm
not gonna brag. Oh I'm going to Okay. I want
you to see I would expect nothing, but Jonathan.
Speaker 4 (31:50):
Hear me.
Speaker 2 (31:51):
Jonathan. When when SFA was you thought they were going
to beat you bage, I was wanting you to brag.
It wasn't gonna happen. But the winner of our Kyle Tucker,
had bought you bet, needs to brag. I mean endlessly. Yes.
For those of that don't know, we have years on
the contract, seven and a half. I have over he
has under when though, oh we did a year ago,
(32:11):
long time ago, if not more. And the latest Jeff
Passing projection was a the Mookie Bets deal, which was
twelve years, three hundred and sixty five. Jeff Passing thinks
that Kyle Tucker can get four hundred million, but also
he's been underperforming for a month plus and now he's hurt. Well, thankfully,
because you had no chance. Now you get Thankfully. We
(32:32):
didn't talk dollars in cents because I'm terrible about the
dollars and cents, but I'm I feel good about that
I don't feel great. I just feel good. But when
he was starting to hit the ball like two weeks ago,
I didn't feel nearly as good. Steve is with us
on seven out and ten fifty five. Steve, good morning, Hi.
Speaker 1 (32:47):
How are you doing good?
Speaker 5 (32:49):
Hey?
Speaker 13 (32:50):
My question has to you know again came up last night, right,
astrial picture injuries And maybe maybe every team has had this,
but the last two years the Astros have had what
eight or ten starting pitchers go out for long periods
of time, mostly the whole season, with arm injuries.
Speaker 9 (33:10):
How does that?
Speaker 13 (33:10):
And I'm sure there's analytics out there, but maybe every
team's had this, but it seems like the Astros have
more arm problems than any other team. And you know,
someone should be asking Dana Brown or asking somebody.
Speaker 14 (33:26):
What's the deal?
Speaker 13 (33:27):
Is it the off season program? Is it what they
do between starts? Is it too much focus on spin?
But you know that it's it's a it's a it's
an epidemic, right, and uh, you know, how do they
how do they explain it? I guess I'll hang up
and listen.
Speaker 2 (33:47):
The answer is, we don't know. They're not they're not
giving us an in depth rundown of how they treat
their their staff when it comes to trainers and doctors
and the players and performance. There is a lot of
and this is not just the ASTRO. You're not going
to get a deep dive into any team sports in
their sports medicine program. I know the Dodgers have had
a bunch of I think elbow and arm injuries and
(34:11):
pitchers hurt this year. I'd have to go, you know,
we'd have to go through team to team. You know
a name we haven't mentioned in a while that I
forgot about Renal Blanco. No Blanco had elbow issues too,
So we can go up and down the list and
find a bunch of people with elbow injuries. But the
answer is, we don't really know how much of this
is bad luck. It would be pure speculation either way.
(34:33):
For me to come out here and say no, it's
all just bad luck, that's speculation. For me to say no,
the Astros are mishandling their pictures, that would be speculation
because I don't know. But the injuries have been piling up.
It is something definitely worth investigating by the by the organization,
whether it be training staff, strenth and conditioning, staff, any
(34:55):
of that stuff. I would just say that Jim Crane
is a billionaire and it's been a very successful businessman,
and just by anything he's touched, right, I mean, I'm
sure he's had his share of failures before, and he's
run a very successful Major League Baseball operation. Unparalleled success
for this organized I don't think Jim is turning a
(35:18):
blind eye to this.
Speaker 4 (35:19):
Now.
Speaker 2 (35:19):
My guess is Jim will do a very thorough investigation,
because forgetting about Jim the businessman, Jim's a baseball fan.
Two And by the way, Jim is paying all these
players and all these replacements and all this medical staff
millions of dollars to keep them healthy. And whether it's
(35:42):
the pictures, whether it's the spin rate, the types of
pitches that are throwing, whether it's the amount of work
they're getting in, whether it's the off season training, whether
it's a misdiagnosis from trainers and or medical staff. It
would be criminal if he didn't do a deep dive
into it, so I fully expect him to do it.
Will we ever find the results? The only way would
(36:03):
I ever really know the results ross is that they
make no changes. Then he's going to say everything's on
the app and up. Or if he scratches everything, if
he gets rid of everybody, then he means that he
saw something he didn't like in its time for a change.
And that's the same could be said for the hitting coaches.
That could be said for the pitching coach, the same
for the manager and the general manager. Any owner, regardless
of how things turn out short of winning the World Series,
(36:24):
should do a deep dive in his organization. So I
have to trust that Jim Crane is not just smoking
a cigar, drinking his Cavassier and going, oh, this is
just a tough luck season for us. That doesn't make
any sense, and I don't believe it to be the case. Yeah,
I forgot about Hayden was Ansky too, so you got
Renel Blanco. Hayden was an Esky. Brandon Walter doesn't sound
(36:47):
good for Arraghetty, no hater I hate. Yeah, Well that's
his shoulder. I guess I'm thinking of elbows Tommy John's.
But yeah, yeah, I mean it's worth investigating for sure,
But I don't have the answers. I don't think any
of us can. We could speculate, and I will just
say obviously, It does not look good when you have
(37:08):
this amount of guys going down, with this amount of
major elbow injuries. Ten fifty nine Brian Bogasvic starts the
second hour the Matt Thomas Show next here on Sports
Talk seven ninety eleven O four Sports Talk seveninety let's
(37:29):
spend ten You know what, Brian Bogosvic, We're gonna have
to talk eleven minutes with you this week because I
need you to walk me off the ledge because yesterday exacerbation,
I don't know whatever, you know, pissed off at exasperation whatever,
that too, Bogie. Three to one, Bro, you can't find
(37:51):
the strike zone in the ninth runners in scoring position,
and it was just another injury. It was like a
microcosm of the entire season. And I keep trying to
hold lot of this notion that the Astros are still
in first place, in which they are and they'd be
in the playoffs today at the season end of the day.
But man, it has been really two and a half
months of just holding on for dear life.
Speaker 7 (38:13):
Yeah, I don't think one extra minute's going to be
enough to get you off the ledge that you're on.
Speaker 2 (38:17):
That feels fair, But yeah, so you're.
Speaker 7 (38:21):
Right about yesterday. I think yesterday, you know, as much
as it hurt because it's a loss in a big
game at the end of the season, and it's one
that it felt like was in your hand and you
didn't get it. That that always hurts, but it's it's.
Speaker 2 (38:34):
The way it happened.
Speaker 7 (38:35):
It's kind of all of your concerns with this team
rolled into one. You know, obviously, the injury that happens,
We've seen too many of those. You know, It's it's
an offense that can't pull away and make it easy
on the pitching staff. It's hitting with runners in scoring position.
It's a bullpen that is you know, depleted and is
starting to look gassed, looking vulnerable because they look depleted
(38:58):
and gassed. And you know, every one individual concern that
you could kind of point to and say, ooh that
might be a problem, ooh that might be a problem,
we saw them all all at once, and yeah, that's
you know, it hurts kind of doubly bad watching it
happen yesterday, because that's twenty games less than the season.
You can't have one in.
Speaker 2 (39:18):
Your hand and not get it, so brain you inherits
that the closer's role when hater goes down. And I
mean the first four or five appearances were like, man,
there is no slippage at all. This is going to
be fun. And now he's having a hard time finding
the strike zone. And we talked about this in the
first Star. When you're a two pitch pitcher against a
team that doesn't strike out a lot or doesn't have
a lot of swing and miss, that's a recipe for disaster.
(39:39):
And we saw that again last night.
Speaker 7 (39:42):
Yeah. You know, when a bradw's right, it doesn't matter
who you are, what style of hitter you are. His
stuff is overpowering enough to get the best contact lineups
to swing and miss. I mean, the whip rates that
he gets on each of his pitches individually are crazy,
but they have to be where together, right, He's got
to get that good crossfire angle on this fastball to
(40:05):
his glove side to set up the big sweeping slider
that comes off of the same plane but goes even
further out of the zone. And you know, if you
go back and look at kind of the pitch chart yesterday,
there were misses outside of the zone. That's a problem.
But the fastballs in particular that were in the zone
weren't getting to that arm side or to the glove side.
(40:26):
They were in the middle of the plate. They were
hit able pitches. There were pitchers that weren't going to
set up the slider going down in a way out
of the zone. And anytime a pitcher is missing up
into the arm side, the first thing that you think
of is fatigue, and then you start looking at the velocities.
It was a lot of ninety five and ninety six
is yesterday, when typically we see ninety seven to ninety eight,
(40:46):
And honestly, in a situation like that where it's a
gotta have it game and against the first place team
in the American League, you would think a little bit
extra juice run. And I was waiting to see ninety
nine and maybe one hundred. So it's starting to look
like he's got I don't. I don't think the closer
thing has gotten to him. I don't think you know,
he's an eighth inning guy that can't do the ninth inning.
(41:08):
I think he's the one guy who's been the constant
down there all year. You know, he hasn't had an injury,
he hasn't had performance affect him, and him floated in
and out of the high leverage situations. It's been full
go and they've probably they've leaned on him, you know,
even when Hayter was there more heavily than anybody, and
it's just it's starting to look like it's catching up
(41:28):
to him.
Speaker 2 (41:29):
Yeah, and that just begs the question, what, what's the solution?
Just a couple of days off, just something has to
work through. And I mean, it'd be nice if if
the offense could go out there and score a bunch
of runs, but they just end up in so many
high leverage situations because of the nature of how the
team is.
Speaker 7 (41:45):
Yeah, you hit it on the nose right there there.
There is no solution from a pitching standpoint. You only
got the guys you got. You only are you know,
have the availability of what you got. And if it's
a if it's a closing situation, it's going to be
Brian A Bray and you're gonna have to live and
die with him because that's what you got and that's
what you're gonna have to do. The solution or you know,
(42:07):
way around it is exactly that. It's to score more runs.
You know, it's not if you lose a one run
game because the bullpen gives it up. It's not necessarily
on the bullpen. Guys aren't perfect. Guys are going to
give up runs here and there. Complimentary baseball is there
being times when you score so many runs early that
your starting pitcher can really settle in and just pound
(42:27):
the strike zone and worry about nothing but getting deep
into the game. You know, it's creating situations that aren't saved,
situations so you can throw to the guys who haven't
thrown in five days, who are fresh, versus the guys
who've thrown, you know, three out of the last five
days and been getting worn out all year. And we've
seen far too few of those games where it's the
(42:47):
offense just taking over and saying, hey, pitchers, you guys
essentially have the day off today.
Speaker 2 (42:53):
Brian bogusevichll is here on Sports Talk seven ninety. It's
been a tough goal of it the last fifteen thirty
games or so for jose Al too a and I
find myself, Brian questioning like, Okay, is this just a
typical jose al to a slump or is this some decline?
What are you seeing from him at the plate?
Speaker 7 (43:14):
A little bit a little bit of both. Maybe, you know,
he's he's always a guy who when he struggles is
going to get super aggressive, so you're going to see
some wild swing. He's also a guy who, you know,
all throughout the course of his career will will hunt
pitches and guess in certain situations, and every once in
a while, you know, he guesses wrong and takes a
(43:35):
swing that looks ridiculous, but you know it's it's an
extended kind of version of that right now, which makes
me think that, you know, is he in a situation
where he's having to do more of those things to
kind of keep up and less and less just straight
up hitting. You know, Granted, he can always break out
of it and look completely locked in for the next
(43:57):
you know, months plus and just go on a tear
that still in there. We've seen him get hot this season,
but it just looks like a guy who's relying more
and more on hunting one pitch at a time or
one location at a time, versus a guy who you know,
there were times when it didn't matter what speed or
what location he threw it, and he could hit it
in any direction at any time, you know, trying to
(44:18):
get himself out of it. But it just it hasn't
happened recently, Bogie.
Speaker 2 (44:22):
The runners in the scoring position number has been the
one that's discouraging so much. We look at every single
loss and we can go back to that one particular category.
Is there some sort of magic elixir that you would
give a particular hitter, whether it's a different approach to
the plate, whether it's swinging early, swinging later, trying to
(44:42):
position the you know, to pull the ball, go oppo, whatever,
because it just feels like that. So much of the
angst is these key hitters in this astro lineup with
runners at second and third or base is loaded a
couple of times in that game last Weekgainst the Yankees,
when the ninth inning, with the tying run at the plate,
Correa strikes out, Walker strikes up. That that hurt. Those
(45:04):
aren't terrible, terrible ways to end games. What do you
do when you get the guys on the bases and
you're just looking for that one clutch hit.
Speaker 7 (45:14):
Yeah, there, there's there's a lot of things that come
into play. First of all, crazy that this sounds. The
thing that correlates most of hitting with runners in scoring
position is just team batting average in general, generally, teams
that can hit hit with runners in scoring position. But
that's not been that. You know, the Etros are near
probably they're probably in the top third of the league
still in batting average overall, and then we see their
struggles with runners in scoring positions. So that's kind of
(45:38):
you know, can't make heads or tails of that. But
I think the thing that you would look at now, right,
hitting with runners in scoring position used to be all
about take what's out there. Right, there's a man on third,
less than two outs, Just get him in second and third,
get him over maybe, or get him in maybe get
the guy over at the same time, and kind of
take what's out there. But now you know, there's there's
(46:00):
such a different approach to hitting, where it's all about
trying to have big innings, especially early in games, because
that's what wins games, right, You have to put up
big crooked numbers. There are very very few two to
one games anymore. Right, everybody's getting on a race to
five or a race to six, and you have to
have bigginnings to do so. But when you're struggling with
runners in scoring position, sometimes I would think just take
(46:21):
a step back. You know, if you're up there and
it's a man on third with one out in the
second inning, instead of taking the approach of like, Okay,
I'm having my regular at bat, maybe I hit a
double that'll score and put me in scoring position, will
be in position to have that big inning. Just take
what's out there, maybe a little bit earlier in the bat,
earlier in the game, cash in one, and maybe just
(46:41):
that gets the ball rolling a little bit. It seems
like a lot of times there's more focus on here's
our opportunity to have the beginning versus here's our opportunity
to get that one that's out there right in front
of us. And you know, mathematically, does it make sense
to do that? Maybe not, but at the same time,
it could kind of jump start things a little bit.
Speaker 2 (47:03):
We kept you eleven minutes, Thank you very much of
the time as always.
Speaker 7 (47:07):
Are you off the ledge?
Speaker 4 (47:09):
No?
Speaker 7 (47:09):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (47:10):
And you boy and your boy Josh Reddick was losing
his mind last night too. So all you guys are
space that you are kind of feeling it right now.
Speaker 7 (47:16):
I think yeah, I think I think everybody's feeling it
right now.
Speaker 2 (47:20):
All right, are you working this weekend?
Speaker 5 (47:23):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (47:24):
All right, Well, maybe maybe you're the maybe you're the
Electra that'll fix things because that series coming up in
a couple of days. Thank you for the time as always, friend,
We really appreciate it.
Speaker 7 (47:32):
See again all right.
Speaker 2 (47:33):
Brian bogusvik with us here. He tried it can turn,
It can turn on a dime. Mattie, Oh yeah, because
we're gonna remember it when the Astros win over the
Blue Jays. Tomorrow. We're playing a Kendrick Lamar song in
honor of Distant Drake. Yes that everyone's gonna be bouncing
around the streets going.
Speaker 7 (47:51):
Man.
Speaker 2 (47:51):
I listened to matt and Ross. They played the Kendrick
Lamar song and it was so good. I've been singing
it all day long. Yeah, if we're playing not like
us won five Grammies. That's true. It's more than Barry
Manilone his whole life. I don't want to keep going
the Barry Manilow card on me either. I was just
thinking of a random guy. Yeah, it's kind of random. Uh,
shut your ball. Mass Up is coming up in the
(48:13):
bottom of the hour. You're always like, you're always like
the top of my list on that I'm trying to
get you off that top of the list. That's fine.
I look where I like to stay, all right, comfy seven.
I'd be worried if I wasn't. Is there any okay?
Can we do it? A non astro A segment coming back?
I don't even know what it could be. I'm gonna
give Texans on line talk, okay, lollygagging?
Speaker 7 (48:35):
Mmm?
Speaker 2 (48:38):
Yeah, they call you the lolly gegger. Yeah all right?
Uh and can shut your ball mass up in fifteen minutes.
If you like to join us, you may do so.
Cleve and twenty Matt Thomas showed Ross Sports Talk seven

Let me look real quick before we go. The phones
have some nice people that have called in and want
(48:59):
to talk to the main headlines Kelsey takes blame for
worthy injury, No excuse pass. What do you mean? It's
everyruarthy longhorned legend. He crashed into him? All right, get
into it's going full Dave Matthews band, what do you say?
Speaker 7 (49:17):
Sorry?
Speaker 2 (49:17):
I hurt you, pretty baby? No crack crash into me?
Speaker 10 (49:20):
Isn't that?
Speaker 2 (49:20):
Dave Matthews? It's fine, but I want to use a
pretty baby one?
Speaker 7 (49:23):
All right?
Speaker 2 (49:23):
Wow, NBA investigating Malik Beasley gambling allegations. I thought they
cleared him or what happened with that? They're back on him. Yes,
I think he cleared Okay, I thought or I'm getting confused.
Speaker 4 (49:36):
I guess.
Speaker 2 (49:37):
Uh. Anthony Rizzle retiring as a Cub after fourteen seasons.
Jets Cuba Krizzo's retiring? Yeah?
Speaker 7 (49:46):
What do?
Speaker 2 (49:46):
He signed a one day contract? Apparently Jets cut Gibson
after cost fumble versus Steelers. Uh, okay. Pulk defends US
players critis me, not them. I don't know. Bo Potch
Potchetino whatever u Booie gives Bamus Hoops second top fifty commitment.
Speaker 4 (50:09):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (50:09):
NFL says Carter's ejection serves as suspension. That's the old
spinning thing on opening night and the Storm edged the
Valkyries to snag the final playoff spot in the w
NBA playoffs. Huge, all right, that's what we're fighting with,
and our astros are melting down. None of the things
we said. We're not talking about the astros this segment.
It's too late. Jody on seven ninety Hello, Jody, Hey, guys.
Speaker 1 (50:33):
Sorry, I'll do them good, well not good, so you
know that's melting down. But you kind of got to
listen to Bogie, kind of listen to you know, like
between the lines man. I mean it's it's you know,
we got to get rid of math on this and
kind of just go with baseball. And honestly, if you
(50:53):
go just look at the stats, whereas all tuve hit
the best in the lineup, and nobody wants to do it. Nobody,
everyone's scared, you know, like we got to keep Penia
get the top. We got to keep Pinion in the top,
keep him in the top. Fine, put him after Altuve
put out to b one, but Pinia two, Korea three,
yord On at four. Jordan is the only guy hitting
with runners at scoring positions, and we don't have anybody
(51:15):
getting on base in front of him. I mean, just
look at how many times he's hit with runners at
the scoring position since he's been back. It hadn't been very many.
So how do we do that We get people that
will get on in front of him?
Speaker 2 (51:27):
Hosts in a massive slump. He's he's hitting two hundred
over the last thirty games.
Speaker 1 (51:33):
He is, but but imagine put him in a spot
where he hits three hundred, where he can freaking seek
out fastballs where he can. He's not getting freaking sliders
all day long, you know, And he should lay off
there ambushing the first dude. He's never laid off of
him in his freaking career.
Speaker 2 (51:49):
He's let off the majority of his career. So, I mean, honestly, Jody,
I don't know if I want him betting more. If
I'm going to give one extra back to a game
to a guy, I wont Jeremy Pinia and jord and
Alva is getting that in Korea over al Tub. I mean,
and I love Altuba, you know that. I mean, he's
the greatest of them all. But he's in a massive
slump right now. So if I have to decide between
those four guys, who's getting the one fewer at bat
(52:10):
right now? Speaking today, things could certainly change. But in
September the tenth, it's jose al Tuve.
Speaker 1 (52:17):
Okay, Well, okay, so there you go with the mathematics saying, right,
so you're saying he's getting one more at that is
he really getting one more at bat? Go back, go
back and look at the top four guys and see
how many times that the top three, top two have
betted more than three and four. It's not mathematically happening.
If the top four of the lineup we're getting four
(52:37):
at bats five at bats a game, they're all getting
the same number of at bats. Where eighteen games left
the season for not one sixty two and one sixty two, Yeah,
that might play over the course of the entire year,
not in the next eighteen games, next eighteen games, the
top four, the top five or going to that these
same amount of times.
Speaker 2 (52:56):
So you want so you want the out, You want
the out earlier in the at bat, and you want
it later in the in the inning, is what you're saying.
Speaker 1 (53:03):
I think it's all it's it's a mentality thing too.
I mean, you know, think about it like this again.
Yes he's in a slum, but put him back where
he's comfortable. Put him back where you know, he's not
putting in a fresh situation of having to drive in
or run. He's not driving.
Speaker 2 (53:19):
You're overthinking this job. I mean, he's coming to the
plate and he's looking at the picture, and he's thinking
about the pitches. He's not thinking about what position of
he's in. It's certainly not mid game and and the
first in and he even talked about Jeremy Panny gets
on base more. He's got a lot of speed, he's
got a higher batting average, he's got to higher ops.
You want him on in front of jord On Alvarez
more very soon he's batting second.
Speaker 1 (53:41):
He's batting second if he is in front of the
jord On Ava Jordan in the two holes.
Speaker 2 (53:46):
Not you got a guy who's been an automatic out
and you want him first up.
Speaker 4 (53:51):
He's not.
Speaker 1 (53:51):
Well, you'll miss what I'm saying. I guess because it's
just like, thank.
Speaker 15 (53:58):
You, Jordy.
Speaker 2 (53:59):
But I want my higher percentage hitters, my guys that
are non slumping, me in front of the slumpers. And
now I go on math on me, Matt Math. You
know that first place hitter doesn't get more abs. Matt,
listen to Jody Well, I mean it doesn't on a
per game basis, mill, but if you add them up
over six or seven games, yeah, there's a chance there's significant.
Jam means he's coming up more when uh, you know,
(54:20):
the the stray Dubon or Jake Myers whoever gets on base.
That means he's coming up with runs on scoring position
where he hasn't been good. Would you rather have Jeremy Penia,
Jeremy Paenian than your on alvas. Let's say Jake Myers
and Maurica Dubon get on eight to nine. You want
Penia and Alvarez coming up? Or do you want al
Tuvey and then Penion Alvarez. It's very simple. I may
(54:42):
and look if if if Jose wants to get two
hits a game for the next five games and moving
back in the top three, I'm okay with it. That's
the that's the beautiful thing about lineups. They fluctuate, they're
they're they're constantly fluid. That's why you have a lineup.
That's why when you put a lineup out there, you
can change it the very next day, depends who's hot
and who's not. But right now, as we speak September
(55:03):
the tenth, josel Tuvy is not one of your top
three hitters, he said, And that shouldn't be in the
top three, he said, sixty nine in the last seven games,
he said, in the last fifteen one to seventy five.
Speaker 4 (55:14):
We got the.
Speaker 2 (55:14):
Numbers out there from Josh ce Lasher and last night,
thank you, thank you, Josh. She shout out to you.
My friend. All right, uh, let's let's squeeze it very quickly.
Forget to shut your ball mass up. Doug is with
us on seventy Doug really quick, please, hey.
Speaker 15 (55:27):
Fellas, it's real simple. It's just like the election. Whenever
it's the economy stupid, right about the elections, every time
it's the injury stupid. That is what the hell is
going on with the Astros. I'm tired of Astros fans
going we're stug or Jeorge spot is a terrible manager.
Nobody's ever dealt with the amount of injuries the Astros
that have had this year, any year literally that we
(55:50):
can even find. So so quit complaining. Quit saying, oh
my god, the sky is following. If we don't make
the playoffs this year, it's probably a good thing. We
need the freaking rest.
Speaker 2 (56:01):
But no, no, no, you know you don't get me there. Yeah,
I don't need my players resting, so let's give up
the playoff. That doesn't make any sense.
Speaker 15 (56:08):
Okay, I know I hate to go mathematical, but think
how many okay, how many? How many freaking times the Astros?
How many more games have the Astros played than every
other team in all of baseball?
Speaker 2 (56:24):
That's what year.
Speaker 15 (56:28):
That's why we continue to break down. It's not the
pitch clock, it's the amount of games the Astros have
played in the last ten years period.
Speaker 2 (56:35):
Well, but the Astros only played two more than everybody
else did last year. Thank you, act you dog for
the phone call. Sadly, and by the way, when they
when they when the season ends, they go on long vacations,
they're not they're not in the batting cagion of Ember
the ninth. I feel pretty company. Yeah, I think seventh
straight alcs as you guess. You could say there's some
cumulative wear and tear, but yeah, they got two extra
(56:57):
games last year, so they should be fine.
Speaker 7 (56:59):
All right.
Speaker 2 (56:59):
Time for some people to shut their ball masses up.
And if you want to tell us shut our bum
masses up, I'm okay with that.
Speaker 4 (57:04):
That's it.
Speaker 2 (57:05):
Yeah, that's the thing. We're not perfect. Well I'm close
closer than Rosses. But the point is I figured you'd
follow up somehow.
Speaker 5 (57:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (57:12):
Uh, if you want to tell us to shut our
bum messes up, we're here for it. But I don't
think you're going to because we're friendly. We've both been
told this, shut our bum up on this segment seven,
Gary comes after you about the uh.
Speaker 5 (57:25):
Hell.
Speaker 2 (57:25):
Hello, I'm Gary and I want everyone to do the
way way. Tell Matt to shun his bumb mass up.
I'm Gary. Uh Gary, there you're going Bradward on us. Okay,
I'm sorry. I mean to go brandword. Not I do
sound like bradword. I'm sorry, Gary, I't mean to insult bradword.

Speaker 2 (57:57):
Eleven thirty five. Here we go seven one three two

at the office, someone just opens the door and yells
and screams, just gather reaction. Tell me anybody got time
for that? Walk into like a normal human being. Hey,
nobody got time for you? Got if you know someone,
(58:20):
if you know somebody that's a bad tipper, don't just
sho mess up shits some my mess up, man. I'm
going first seven one three seven ninty seven one three
two one two five seven. Hounty. I had no idea
who Hailey Sawyer was until earlier this week. Hailey Sawyer.
(58:43):
Hailey Sawyer Who. She's an associated She's a right so
a SoCal news group. She rights, she covers the USC Trojans. Okay,
she's also an associated press poller. She gets to poll. Uh,
she gets to put together a top twenty five pole. Now,
the associated press poll is meaningless, so it really enlargely
(59:09):
should be just go away because the only pole that
matters is the college football playoff poll, which would be
coming out in a few weeks of the first go round. Okay,
do you know what Haley did? No, I don't. South
Florida University of the Bulls and Testa went to Gainesville
this past week. Huh took a five hundred thousand dollars
(59:30):
check from Florida for playing the game, and they beat
the Florida Gators in Gainesville. Five hundred thousand. Oh, it's
kind of sick. No, five hundred thousand. So associated press
polls can be released to the media of who grabs,
who puts, what teams wear. She moved Florida two spots
up the top twenty five pole for losing for losing,
(59:54):
and when asked on a video why she did that,
she said, I have my reasons, but it really doesn't
anyway because our pole doesn't mean anything.
Speaker 7 (01:00:02):
Ha ha ha.
Speaker 2 (01:00:03):
So Haley, shut Joe bumass up.
Speaker 4 (01:00:07):
Me, shit, jo bum mess up man.
Speaker 7 (01:00:09):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (01:00:11):
So you know what, if you don't like it, you
obviously give two blanks about filling it out properly, then
don't do it. But you're embarrassing yourself. And frankly, you
know who the people are going after. Who's going after
her the most are female sports fans, And I'm glad
for it because we, as guys do it, we come
across as misogynists yet that, but women are going you're
embarrassing us because there are lots of legitimate female sports
(01:00:34):
reporters out there, Haley, you ain't one of them. Wow,
very strong feelings. That's I'm here for.
Speaker 5 (01:00:41):
Strong.
Speaker 2 (01:00:42):
Thanks. Hailey Osbourne. Oh, Haley Joe Osmond, No, her name
is Hailey Sawyer. Okay, all right, she can shut her
bumb ass up. Yes, Matt, I'm good. Okay, shit, Jo
bum mess up man? What you get this week? Can
I just do astros injury like I mean? It just
(01:01:04):
keeps happening, right, Luis Garcia his philosophies. First of all,
he's throwing eighty eight miles an hour. When he goes
out there, did you when you saw that? Did you
flip out? It was not encouraging. I was I didn't
see it. I heard it, and it was not getting better.
Then he waves to the dugout points to his elbow.
(01:01:25):
You know, sometimes they come and the trainers come look
at you, and you give a couple of warm up
pitches and then they're like, ah, you're out. They didn't
even do anything like, yeah, you want to get out
of the game. Yeah, we're out of the game. It
was so deflating. And it keeps happening. Antybody got time
for all these elbow injuries. You feel like you could
send them the last four months, right, I know, but
it keeps happening. You feel like at some point is
(01:01:46):
it going to stop. It's relentless. It's ridiculous. I'm sad,
but you're get all it's not there here. Don't don't
don't don't scream it. I won't keep it. Keep it
at a whisper. It's not there here, Jonathan, what's the
(01:02:08):
matter with you?
Speaker 7 (01:02:10):
Uh?
Speaker 4 (01:02:11):
Bill?
Speaker 6 (01:02:12):
Belichick was coming out in the press conference and I
know you guys saw talking about how there was a
rumor saying that New England Patriot recruiters for the team
weren't allowed in his stadium to recruit.
Speaker 2 (01:02:25):
The kids are being around there he was Bill Belichick
and went them around.
Speaker 6 (01:02:28):
Yes, that's correct, And when asked about it, he goes, well,
I'm not welcome there, welcome there to watch it.
Speaker 2 (01:02:33):
They but welcome here. But my thing is, it's not
about you.
Speaker 6 (01:02:37):
You're not know these kids want to change their lives,
feed their families, and you're up here whining because you
have a vendetta against a program that then't like you.
Speaker 2 (01:02:44):
No one cares. This isn't about you.
Speaker 6 (01:02:46):
This is about the kids that want to better their
lives and get an education and go forward in their dreams.
Speaker 2 (01:02:51):
Ain't nobody got time for that. So say, what he's
saying is that they're not allowing scouts at North Carolina
games from the Patriots because he's not welcome to the
Paints any longer. And Belichick's probably thinking, well, there, I
don't want my guys going to the Patriots. I want
them going somewhere else. Yeah, But then Rabel said that
Pelichick is welcome, right, Mike Mike Rabel said that, yeah,
(01:03:11):
there's it's it's it's a long, confusing storyline that Frank
Light It is very confusing. But it just a recruiters talk.
Speaker 6 (01:03:19):
If that recruiter sees you and it talks to Angel,
they're gonna be talking to Oh, he's a good We
can't get them. But isn't they all connect? And he's
worried about himself and oh because this and this, that
was the only reason. And I think that's so distasteful.
Speaker 2 (01:03:32):
Belichick distasteful, Belichick spiteful, distasteful, and he can shut those
well mess up. According to Jonathan Allen, yeah, you know
what's have you separated? Who's whom?
Speaker 7 (01:03:45):
Me?
Speaker 2 (01:03:46):
Okay, you know what, I'll do one more real quick please,
And you know this hurts me. Matt Steve Sarkisian, Oh,
you better record what was that You're coming after your
intimidating a young reporter who is asking a one hundred
percent fair question of something that's circulating online where it
(01:04:07):
looks like your starting quarterback and the most famous college
football player on the planet earned or not looks hurt
you get asked about it that is totally above board.
Then you try to intimidate him and then you say,
nobody films you in the bathroom. What does that even mean?
Shuts obamass up Steeze Sarkisian.
Speaker 4 (01:04:28):
Shobam mass up man, And.
Speaker 2 (01:04:30):
Why are you so glisteny glistening? You see him? I
don't stare at him. It looks like he just came
off a run at the beach, putting on some SPF
seventy five. I don't know what he was going on
in there, did I hm? I was just more concerned
about what he was saying. It looked like he was
getting ready for it. And by the way, w w
(01:04:50):
E he was looking for He's gonna do SmackDown. He's
all oiled up. The rumor is that Arch told himself,
and that's a terrible thing to put on your quarterback.
Speaker 5 (01:04:57):
That the rumor.
Speaker 2 (01:04:58):
That's what Steve Sarkisian implied. And then everybody's running with it.
Now they're calling it poop gate, dead Arch manning soil himself.
We all have to wonder because Steves Sarkisian won't shut.
Speaker 4 (01:05:11):
His bum ass up shit, so bumm ass up man.
Speaker 2 (01:05:15):
To those of you that are creating those you really
cute baby videos. It's time for you to freshen your material.
I'm seeing the same eight or nine over and over again.
Nobody got time for the repeat of the baby videos.
Speaker 3 (01:05:25):
I do not, I do not.
Speaker 7 (01:05:28):
These do not hit.
Speaker 2 (01:05:29):
My algorithm is that you're good. Yeah, because I'm looking
at the same ones and they're saying the same things.
I love my mom, I love my dad because my
grandma gives me all these extra treats before and after dinner.
I wake up a two o'clock in the morning and
cry because I want someone change my pants. I mean,
that's fine, they were funny the first time around. It's
freshen these bad boys up. This is occtagenarian humor.
Speaker 7 (01:05:50):
I like.
Speaker 2 (01:05:52):
Six month old babies swear violently. Yeah, and then you
repost them on Twitter when they're about their long horns.
I wouldn't do that. I mean I thought about it.
You did it, Oh, I did, Geo and Steve. We'll

a different time. And then number three, do we go

Speaker 5 (01:06:56):

Speaker 2 (01:06:56):
Well, let's let's play some sing sing sing from Benny
Gutman on the show. I don't even know who Benny

Wednesday to New York City for what NBA broadcast meetings.
Oh okay, you're gonna call in about what Dallas for

(01:07:40):
Steph Curry thirty footer? More news on that coming out
at noon. You got some good news. We're also gonna
play rank Who's got a better non conference basketball schedule?
What are you talking about? University of Texas and University
Houston both released in a non conference schedule today. I
would hope Houston's planning more. I mean the Longhorn during
(01:08:02):
the rebuild. What are you guys ever rebuilding anything? They
just hired a new coach. They got a bunch of
new players. Every school's got a bunch of new players.
They got to rebuild. In the first game they're playing
against Duke, you hear this the best team in the country. Last,
use excuses one on one right here, Sports talks here.
Basketball had the jacket since two thousand and three. That
(01:08:24):

what's the matter with you? At eleven fifty one?
Speaker 14 (01:08:32):
All right, can you guys hear me?
Speaker 8 (01:08:33):
Good?
Speaker 4 (01:08:33):
Yes, sir?
Speaker 7 (01:08:35):
Okay?
Speaker 5 (01:08:36):
Perfect?
Speaker 14 (01:08:36):
So I wanted before I get to it to it.
I gotta, I gotta such a bow mass up for
for you Ross, for doctor Rhodo. But let me let me,
let me, let me go back, and just just preface
this before I get to it. All right, So last
Friday when Roto card I asked him if I hadn't
made a good trade by trading Breeze hall in a
Buka for Brian Tumm Brian and Thomas Junior, and uh
(01:09:02):
ted McMillan, and you guys hyped me up so much,
Doctor Roto said it was a still yes, it was lost,
you know. And so yeah, so this past week and
Luca scored twenty three and uh Breethall scored twenty and
McMillan scored eleven and Brian Thomas scored nine, and uh
(01:09:23):
just you know, you guys hyped me up so much.
And I was calling my cousin.
Speaker 7 (01:09:26):
Saying I finissed him so bad.
Speaker 14 (01:09:28):
I was this, that and the other, and uh yeah,
I got egg on my face, man.
Speaker 7 (01:09:32):
So so got to shut you by man up.
Speaker 2 (01:09:35):
It's one week, one week, baby, trust the process. We
trust the process, baby, I'll give you that.
Speaker 14 (01:09:41):
And I ain't gonna trust the process, but you guys
hyped me up so bad that I was just this,
that and the other to my cousin and now I
got egg on my face, so nobody got time.
Speaker 2 (01:09:50):
I thought Braylen Allen was gonna get more carries, thank you,
he said he had at one. Oh I'm sorry, Okay,
I know you know I put them on hold every
time they hang on selser jerk. Let's talk to Gary
the waiver.
Speaker 4 (01:10:04):
What Gary do Gary? Gary?
Speaker 2 (01:10:06):
Them?
Speaker 5 (01:10:06):

Speaker 2 (01:10:07):
What's the man you? Sary?
Speaker 4 (01:10:09):
What's the man with you?
Speaker 15 (01:10:10):

Speaker 9 (01:10:13):
Hey, guys, a good show, thank you mainly. But hey,

Speaker 2 (01:10:31):
Yeah, your show of massive dupuses. Yes, you're on the

Speaker 9 (01:10:36):
So anyway, anyway, Uh, my call is about all these
people that call in after the fact twenty twenty hindsight,
perfect vision, and uh, mister Thomas, this includes you. Earlier today,
everybody calling in about that they should have done this,
(01:10:58):
they should have done that, They shouldn't have this man in,
They shouldn't have known.
Speaker 4 (01:11:02):
I didn't do that.
Speaker 2 (01:11:03):
Once at all? What are you talking about? You? Let

right there, Mono and Mono with them.
Speaker 9 (01:11:19):
Actually anyway, So all you all you sorry people that

Speaker 2 (01:11:40):
Up, man, Yeah me may thank you, Garry, Thank you
Gary for joining us on the show. It was such
a pleasure to.
Speaker 17 (01:11:48):
Have you on.
Speaker 2 (01:11:50):
Why are you talking like uh Dana Carvey's impression of
George H. W. Bush. It wouldn't be prudent at this
mure you're doing. Sorry, I was close enough, that's fine.
You're doing Church lady mightn't be pruding special? The hell's

those suching my mass? Up? Are they just generical Astro
(01:12:12):

Speaker 18 (01:12:21):

Speaker 8 (01:12:21):

Speaker 10 (01:12:22):
How you doing today?
Speaker 2 (01:12:23):
Amazing? Thank you for asking.
Speaker 3 (01:12:25):
I do have a such a bum mass up too, Okay,
go for it. Uh let me do that to the
my son's a waiter, you know, and he's a good one.
To the to the old man that yelled at him
for no reason, that old man, and I'm.
Speaker 2 (01:12:37):
Not a young guy.
Speaker 7 (01:12:38):
Okay, he needs to shut his bum his bumb mass up.
There you go. That's right, because my son's good, he's
a good waiter.
Speaker 3 (01:12:47):
And then I was just gonna say, you know, I
know that was spy gate and uh the flate gate,
but poop gate.
Speaker 10 (01:12:56):
Outdoes them all.
Speaker 7 (01:12:57):
That's all I got to say.
Speaker 10 (01:12:58):
Poop Gate's the best.
Speaker 2 (01:13:01):
You know, it's I don't think he sold himself. He
might have let one out. I mean, it's gonna happen sometimes, right,
ross happens everywhere abit church have been, your place of business,
could happen on a football field, Yeah, yeah, he said,
you like to blast off on the plane I do not. Actually,
(01:13:23):
that's actually not true. If if the people in first
class are giving me those looks like I'm in first
class and you're not, yeah, knock back, Yeah, absolutely I will. God,
you love the right leg of if I have to.
All right, Dusty, all right, Uh, that's it for shut
your mess up, Steven and James hanging tap. We'll get
(01:13:44):
to you guys after we get to the news at noon.
And are the Astros slip siding away in the American
League West? That's up next. Seven one three two one
two five seven NATI seven one three two one two
five seven NATTI is the Matt Thomas Show.
Speaker 4 (01:14:15):
With ross An tim God makes his play.
Speaker 2 (01:14:28):
Oh he's playing sucks right now. Frankly, ROSSI the information.
Speaker 5 (01:14:33):
To the model name.
Speaker 2 (01:14:34):
That's because the trainers won't tell his information available to us.
This song really fits. It's sad, but it fits. That's great,
it does fit, you know. Thank you very much, amazing,
thank you, thank you very much, incredible, thank you, thank you.
Speaker 5 (01:14:47):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (01:14:48):
You know John, you got to you got a future
in this in this business. You and there Hen I
don't know me, yeah, probably not much longer. Stop You're
you're never leaving us. What what year can till when
can you.
Speaker 7 (01:15:02):
Use your car for uber.
Speaker 17 (01:15:06):
M.
Speaker 2 (01:15:07):
If I was gonna go uber, I would go get
an electric car. I'd buy and just go from there.
Oh okay, yeah, let me go pluck some money off
my money tree and buy an electric car. Craig a
Craig Akerman, voice of the Rockets on television, got uh
a electric car and he shot me. He was calling
me and sent me a video video time FaceTime me.
(01:15:29):
He doesn't have he doesn't have to drive a car.
He just sits in it. You can charge it for
free a lot of places, right, Yeah, but he just
sits in the car. He doesn't he has the hands
free it's the what do they call it, not auto
drive or whatever? Auto pilot. I was so jealous. Maybe
maybe it made me a less crank. Or if I
get if I get a vehicle that something can drive
me around, I think that'd be the that's the key.
(01:15:52):
You're trusting that though he really doesn't he trusted. Aren't
you supposed to still be attentive? He is, but it's
not like he doesn't. He didn't take a nap. I mean,
you see still sitting up. Don't take any nap or
don't do anything else. Matt I know what's going through
your mind. Well, it would be going through my mind. Rossie.
Please explains as please, that's why you miss driving so much,
(01:16:15):
so your best work was done.
Speaker 8 (01:16:18):
Heer.
Speaker 2 (01:16:20):
Well, that time for the news at noon at twelve
oh six. And what the news at noon is bro
brought to you by Sports Talk seven ninety Yes, Matthew,
well you just heard the highlights. There where the low lights,
shall I say? Unfortunately Astros lose to the Toronto Blue Jays.
(01:16:41):
A number of things went wrong for the Astros. They
were two for eleven with runners in scoring position. Blue
Jays were two for ten, by the way, but you
lost in ten innings after in the first or excuse me,
second inning, Luis Garcia lifted from the game. Of course,
they are away tests and more information. But Luis Garcia,
(01:17:03):
I believe right elbow discomfort see you in twenty twenty nine,
that's what they're going with. After a twenty eight month
recovery from Tommy John surgery. Unfortunately he has another elbow injury.
Did not look good because he just immediately came out
of the game, So not good there. Joe spotted after
(01:17:25):
the game calling it a gut punch. Then also at
the end of the game, you had Brian bray You
blowing this save, giving up a couple of runs there,
and the ninth Craig Kimberl giving up the unearned runner.
Still haven't given up an earned run. We're looking for
the bright side, Greg Kimberl. But how would you describe
his performance overall?
Speaker 7 (01:17:42):
Not great?
Speaker 2 (01:17:42):
No, he looks like he's just holding on. This is
why I tell you ERA doesn't tell you everything, Matt.
I'm not disagree with you on that, especially for relievers.
I would think inherited runners is the is the metric
I would want to use. Okay, how many of the
inherited runners scored? How about his field independant pitching? Just
at three point one four? That's not I mean, it's
(01:18:03):
not bad, but it tells you a little bit more
than the ERA. Anyways, three of the last four times out, Matt,
Brian abray you three earned runs against the Angels, that
three run shot against the Yankees and then two earned
runs given up there. He did have a scoreless outing
against the Rangers over the last weekend. However, three the
last four times out he has given up runs Velosi
(01:18:26):
was not great on the fastball, nor was his location
of that pitch, and Joseel Tube got thrown out first
a third on a throw by Black Guerrero and Christian
Walker had a chance to be a hero late didn't
come through. I never heard of that. I mean, top
me off the ledge bogus. EVA couldn't do it in
(01:18:47):
an hour ago? Can you do it? There's always today
you'd say that I've been I think I did. I
say this last Friday. It just doesn't feel like their year.
I said it on the post game that Friday. I
think that's when they lost in twelve. How would the
calls last night?
Speaker 7 (01:19:04):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (01:19:04):
Well, one guy did want did say that jose Al
Tuovey is spearheading a campaign to get Joe Spot a fire.
Therefore he is tanking the games now apparently I saw
this on Twitter today. I did not hear it for myself,
but somebody called Seawan today and asked why Joe Spot
it would make the terrible decision to put Josel Tuovay
at second base to start the tenth inning. You know,
Uh it was well, they had they had to do
(01:19:26):
some shuffling around because there were some pinch hits and
car teening pinch hit for somebody. I can't remember the
exact order of everything. He would have been their last
recorded out, correct, jose al Tuova. That's why he was
on second Yeah, that's right, that's the answer. Why, oh,
why was he on not playing second base? Why he was?
Speaker 15 (01:19:45):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:19:45):
I'm sorry, Yeah, to A started the game at second base. Yeah,
what are you talking about? Defensively?
Speaker 7 (01:19:49):
No?
Speaker 2 (01:19:50):
Offensively yeah, offensively Yeah, there's no choice, I mean, no
even talking about so it's baseball one on one. We're
still fighting with it. Sorry, yeah, I got confused by
your question. All right, what else going on? I'll give you,
But how about some sol please? Aj blue ball got
you ten outs of no no hit, ten outs. He's
been good. What a lonely feeling that is. Hey, come
on the mound and warm up. We're all sitting here
(01:20:11):
waiting for you to be ready. Yeah, you get as
much time as you want.
Speaker 5 (01:20:14):
Now.
Speaker 2 (01:20:15):
You know what I would do, I would test that
or you would wear out your arm. I'd bet there
for half an hour, you throw seventy six warm up
pitches and then you're out of the game. Slows down
the momentum that is a riridiculous stament from you. This
one I'm gonna move on from please. All right, The
NBA is changing a rule, Matt, did you know.
Speaker 7 (01:20:38):
That?
Speaker 4 (01:20:38):
Now?
Speaker 2 (01:20:38):
Of course, a lot of players at the end of quarters.
You've seen this. They don't want to hurt their field
goal percentage so there's er point five left in the clock,
rather than heaving up a prayer and wanting to keep
their field goal percentages where they are, they'll just do
it right after the buzzer. We've seen many people do
this over the years. Steph Curry, by the way, one
(01:21:00):
of the ones that just lets it fly, which I appreciate.
Speaker 6 (01:21:02):
Well.
Speaker 2 (01:21:02):
Now, the NBA has announced a rule change regarding how
that goes. According to the league, any shot classified as
a quote keieve end quote will be counting towards the
team's field goal percentage, not the players. To be classified
as a heave, it must occur in the final three
seconds of the first three quarters and be launched from
at least thirty six feet away, and the play has
(01:21:26):
to start in the back court. Can I ask you
who was really concerned about this? It must have been
player driven, right, players, players, players, They look at their
field goal percentages they love their field goal percentages. They're
checking it throughout the game. So let me get this straight.
If the basket, if the shot goes in, do they
give credit for that? I think it's it's a team play,
(01:21:47):
no matter what is my understanding. Okay, so there you go.
I don't think the general public could even care. What
a waste of time. It just a reflection of the
diva like nature of NBA players, which the NBA. I
love watching the NBA. Number One, if you are not
(01:22:10):
if you it cost you nothing to try and score
three points, you should heave it one hundred percent of
the time.
Speaker 5 (01:22:16):
But they do it.
Speaker 2 (01:22:17):
Don't do it because they don't want to hurt their
own field goal percentage. So it'd be like to give
you a parallel, It'd be like an NFL quarterback saying, hey,
if I throw a heave ho hail Mary at the
end of the half, it's intercepted. You shouldn't count against me, right,
which is ridiculous. It's ridiculous. The passes pass the shots
a shot, I agree, just ridiculous. Elsewhere in the NBA,
(01:22:37):
Malik Beasley is being investigated over gambling by the NBA.
There was a probe by the US Attorney's Office for
the Eastern District of New York, and at that time,
the NBA said they were cooperating with that investigation. Beasley
apparently was not named a target in that investigation, nor
(01:22:58):
was charging the federal investigation. But now the NBA is
conducting its own gambling allegations investigation against Malik Beasley. I
tell you this all the time, and it worth repeating.
I'm surprised we don't have ten of these a year.
I really don't. I'm honestly surprised we have as many
as we do these players. I mean, come on, anytime
(01:23:19):
we say anytime somebody's prop gets slammed, it's red flags
for every one of these. They have guardrails in place
all of these sports books. If they see if there's
have you met the average athlete? Exactly there there's one
hundred and fifty NBA players starting a game or whatever
it is. Uh wait five time, Yeah, one hundred and
(01:23:41):
fifty NBA players starting a game then plus bench players.
If they notice one of the props is getting slammed
at their book, they're gonna shut everything down immediately. Ridiculous.
By the way, speaking of this on a crossover the
NCAA announcing that three men's basketball players at Fresno State
and San Jose State on their own each other's games
(01:24:01):
or manipulated outcomes for betting purposes and are permanently banned.
Now see that I get it's and I just don't
get it. For NBA players who are making millions of dollars,
and these are being monitored. A bunch of dumb college
kids getting together. It shouldn't happen. But I'm not gonna
go well, they should have known. They didn't know any better.
Card they're nineteen years old. They should have known about Well,
(01:24:21):
I did some dumb stuff when I was nineteen. You're
doing dumb stuff at forty exactly. Guess you imagine how
much dumber it was when I was nineteen. That's true.
Thankful I didn't make those mistakes when I was younger,
and I thought I knew everything there was to know
in the world. And that's the news of noon. Thank
you very much, Sports Harvey, Thank you, Matt. We are gonna,
I don't know, should we compare non conference of the
(01:24:42):
University of Houston versus Texas. You want to, as you've
aged playing Duke No, but I can tell you who
they are playing who I would say the best programs
the last several years, Duke and Yuconnor up there, Texas
is playing them both. All right, let's just rule. We'll
just for one minute. Are you serious? Okay? One minute.
We're gona spend a whole lot of time on one minute.
We'll do it next. Nobody cares one minute Lord thirty
(01:25:06):
thirty seconds each total one minute, Go kooks. Seven one
to three, Go kooks. That's for tickets for university reclar
programs at the same amount of national championship. So I
know that we can count those. You turn personal on
me there, No what seven in the facts seve one
three two, one two five seven ninety back on the
phones in a minute. You guys want to join us,
(01:25:27):
you may do so at seven one three two one
two five seven ninety seven one three two one two
five seven ninety coming up at one twenty. If you
missed our visit with Brian Bogosvic, it was awesome as always,
we'll play that for you at won thirty. Willie Fritz
will be with us our Cougars playing at Colorado this
Friday at t d ECU Stadium six thirty kick two,
huge matchup gonna be big. Uh. By the way, we've
(01:25:49):
got a where do you get your tickets? Uagecugars dot com,
thank slash tickets or seven one three go kooks be
there for that.
Speaker 19 (01:25:55):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:25:56):
Congratulates. We've got a new richest man in a mayor
is the word? It's a world's richest man.
Speaker 7 (01:26:03):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:26:03):
And you're saying, well, Matt, what does that have to
do with sports? Well, it's interesting. The man who's now
on top is Oracle chairman, mister Ellison, Larry Ellison, now
worth one hundred and one billion dollars what I thought
Elon was worth like two hundred million. I'm just telling
you world's richest person after Oracle stock surge. Who's saying this?
This is uh, this is TV stations. You got Forbes
(01:26:26):
saying it. I mean it's all over the place, Forbes
said it. I guess we trust them the most, right.
Speaker 5 (01:26:30):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:26:31):
Oracle stock leaped yesterday at forty percent, was potentially heading
for its best day since nineteen ninety two. Bloomberg reporting
Ellison's wealth increased by more than one hundred million to
three hundred and ninety three. Oh Kemusk is now worth
three eighty five. Well you're saying, well, what does this
have to do with anything that trickle down economics? Maybe
it's all gonna trickle down us. Right, he is a
(01:26:53):
huge Michigan Wolverine super booster. He's the one, the one
that helped with the quarterback. Don't bring that up at Corny,
Gordy's not gonna like that. Yeah, he was the one
that helped Bryce Underwood say, yeah, l s U your
community college. I'm going somewhere much nicer for better education,
(01:27:15):
University of Michigan. Yeah, the guy with the fan boat
shop couldn't putty up the cat Bootro's cracklings and Lafayette
could pick a step up the nil money. Larry Crowdaddy
Farm couldn't pull you up the cast. Now, baby, we
can't compete with Larry Allison there, Huma is it?
Speaker 10 (01:27:34):
Huma?
Speaker 2 (01:27:35):
Homa? Homer littlema. I got the tip and Tipp'deau's ice
house did to come through for Underwood, And they said
a lot of crowdaddies to get the four hundred million.
Now you know, I was thinking about this there today
and I and I you you argue with me about it,
but you're actually right everybody didn't clip that. Don't clip
(01:27:57):
that for every argument we have go ahead. So we've
got about thirty schools that are just cash whipping everybody. Yes,
there's only one national champion per year. Yeah, twenty nine
are gonna be like, damn, we did spend this money properly, yep,
but some are spending more than others. Like for again,
in my mind, and I was teasing you about Texas,
(01:28:17):
I think the school that probably would have the most
to lose if they don't do anything with outside of
what they're normbally doing would probably Texas Tech because text
Tech is new to the parties. You also got to
pay a premium though didn't What was the quote was
like thirty percent extra you tag a million? You got
to make that one point three if you're going to Lubbock, yes,
because he everyone's admitted you can't get athletes to go
(01:28:39):
to Lubbock Texas that if you are, if you are
Florida State, if you're Miami, if you're Notre Dame, if
you're in Alabama, you can you can get those five stars.
Because that's so great about Tuscaloosa tradition. Yeah, I is it,
but hell, they're six and five in the last eleven games.
(01:28:59):
I mean, if Nick Saban's there at something, but I
don't know if Caleb divor is gonna make it true.
It also helps and you have the greatest coach of
all time. Yeah, all right, to the phones, would go.
Let's go to uh RAY in Miami at twelve twenty
five on The Matt Thomas Show and Ross Ray. Good morning.
Speaker 7 (01:29:15):
Hey, how you doing, guys?
Speaker 18 (01:29:17):
Yes, I wanted to talk about the astros, but you know,
as we're on hold, we switch our takes. My take
is I'm the one that called in about c J yesterday.
My take is, Matt, I would love it if you
would I'm working and listening. I would love it if
you would continue your Mark vandermir family feud up takes
(01:29:38):
because my co workers and.
Speaker 2 (01:29:40):
I's just hilarious. Well, I'm glad you like that. Continue that.
Speaker 18 (01:29:43):
Please continue the Mark Vandermir family feud, the Mark vander
Meir family feud talk.
Speaker 7 (01:29:49):
It's just it's really and the pilot talk pilot.
Speaker 2 (01:29:52):
Thank you very I actually use a pilot talk to
romanticize the missus occasionally she likes it too.
Speaker 18 (01:29:58):
Now Adam Clinton is the number one the station because
he does Trump, he does everything, he.
Speaker 2 (01:30:02):
Does them all. He's he's way better than I might,
better than I am. I fully admit that only in
that though. Everything else, I'm all right, thank you very
much for the phone call. Yeah, uh, he zoned out.
What's happened? If you missed it, we were doing Mark
Vanderbuer plub by play calls discussing the Carrie McNair Bob McNair,
Janis McNair, Hal McNair, Cal McNair Hannah McNair family feud. Yes,
(01:30:30):
I remember that. Yeah, and how probably he's not going
to mix the burtherly non love in the middle of
his plub at play calls. What's the latest on that?
I want to I need some more. Let me ask
you this question. This is a serious question. There's no
they're not going to respond to the owner of the
team getting called out for having a fake degree. Mum's
(01:30:51):
the word. Are we more interested in it than the
general publics?
Speaker 4 (01:30:56):
I know you are.
Speaker 2 (01:30:59):
Okay, take him myself out of this, I guess I am.
But yeah, we haven't let you put a whole question up?
Is our Is this being addressed by Texans media people,
media folks? No, this is kind of radioactive is what
I'm saying. No, the Texans have declined comment, as says
(01:31:21):
anybody from the McNair family, and that's what that's and
that's what they should do. They shouldn't say they shouldn't.
That's exactly what our favorite attorney of Tony Busby wants
to do. He wants to be a war awards and
media and the McNair's like, no, I'm not doing that.
I would that's the right thing to do. Has Jonathan
Alexander said anything about this or a story enemy There
was a story that was based off of the fact
(01:31:41):
that Pro Football Talk got the information linked to them,
probably by the Buzby side, probably not, probably definitely, of course.
I mean, I'm just curious. It feels like this is
I think calling out the owner for forcing and getting
forced out by his forcing out his brother and then
(01:32:01):
getting called out for having a fake degree. It feels
like it should be like fire story. And also, by
the way, part of the reason why Carrie apparently was
also forced out was because he did not like the
way the Texans handled their business during the Deshaun Watson
uh and also the minority owner's sexual assault charges. The
(01:32:22):
kind of thing. There's there's some things to go beyond just.
Speaker 7 (01:32:25):
This.
Speaker 2 (01:32:27):
Missus McNair likes one summer seeing this on ESPN. I
haven't seen Adam Schefter address this. He in rapaport. Now,
of course all of them are protecting the shield, Yes,
but that for not doing that? Yeah, well yeah, Florio
hates the nf Florio it gives him great pleasure. But
Florio also then for an NBA part a NFL partner too.
(01:32:49):
He's on a NBC, that's true, so I do give
him credit. He likes coming after Roger Goodell in though
he likes poking the bear. Wow. I mean, I only
hateless in other stations. And the few minutes I was,
I was not hearing any of We talked about this
being about generalistic integrity possibly being compromised with ESPN and
(01:33:10):
the NFL getting in bed together. I don't have definitive
proof of any of that, but it feels like this
is part this is happening. But couldn't you also and
I'm not disagree with you, but couldn't you also say
this is just Tony Busby trying to gain media attention.
Speaker 5 (01:33:22):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:33:23):
Yeah, but Tony Busby is a well known, big time lawyer.
Cal McNair is the owner of the Houston Texans. An
owner of a franchise is being called out for not
having a degree and forcing out his brother. And I
haven't seen once second or coach we're getting more coverage
on is ceedee lamb the wr one for the Cowboys? Well,
(01:33:45):
the reality is this The biggest thing that Tony Busby
has going against the McNair's is that he believes that
his client was kicked out in help by assistance by
the NFL. The NFL has should have no business involving
themselves in any family business at all, unless they were
just trying to make it all go away and be like, yeah,
let's just get this thing to Cal and let's move on.
Speaker 7 (01:34:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:34:06):
I maybe, Hm, I don't know. I don't think the
d I don't think Roger Goodell is like, yeah, let's
get court Carry out of there and maybe Col. But
it could the NFL help in pushing Cal to a
more favorable stance over Carry. Absolutely didn't they have. They
didn't have to come to a vote to get Cal
to take over for Janis. Didn the owners have to
vote on that? I think I thought they I thought
(01:34:28):
they negotiated that out before I got that level. Okay,
I could be wrong, but clearly saying this clearly carries
he needs cash. Pro football talk is a major outlet,
whether we like it or not, and I just feel
like I haven't seen this talked about anywhere else, and
maybe I'm just not looking in the right places. Twelve
thirty Sports Talk, seven outy seven. So we went away
(01:34:50):
from the Astros for a minute. We're gonna give you
more McNair family feud slash Astros. Talk to anybody else
in the marketplace? Does Brian and Bray you shrivel on
the in the ninth? Coming up next, twelve thirty five
on Sports Talk seven ninety, Madden Ross with you until
two o'clock this afternoon seven one three two one two
five seven ninety. If you want to come in and
(01:35:12):
be a part of our conversation seven one three two
one two five seven nine zero Tomorrow Astros of a
day game in Toronto. We'll go ten to one and
then Astros on deck at one o'clock. Mactack will make
his normal appearance with us at eleven. We'll do I
just don't get it. Eleven thirty. It's I got a
lot to get to between now and two o'clock today,
which will feature uh they our visit with the Brian
(01:35:32):
Bogus Civic from earlier today if you missed that, plus
Willie Fritz and our Houston Cougars off to a two
and oh start all right, really fast, one minute here?
This all we're giving it non conference schedule University Houston.
I'll go first, what yeah, okay, this non conference fast
at all. We're gonna give two points for a good opponent,
oh my god, one for an average and zero for
(01:35:52):
anything that's a gimme. Okay? Is that right?
Speaker 7 (01:35:56):
Here we go?
Speaker 2 (01:35:57):
Are you adding these up?
Speaker 7 (01:35:58):
Where?
Speaker 2 (01:35:58):
Okay? Miss Sippy exhibition doesn't count. Lehigh zero points for me,
Townsend zero points, okay, Oakland zero points, Oakland's tough. Auburn
two points, Rider zero, Syracuse two points. That's four okay,
(01:36:21):
Tennessee two points, six okay, TBD. Probably give me somebody
good in Vegas. I'll give myself two points for that too,
eight sure, why not? Florida State one are two points?
I don't know what is the criteria again? Two's really
good opponent, one's decent. It's okay, I guess okay, give
me two Okay, nine points, Jackson State zero, New Orleans zero,
(01:36:44):
at Arkansas and Newark two points. It's eleven points, Middle
Tennessee zero. So I have eleven points in my non conference. Okay, great,
let's run through you. Are you counting these points?
Speaker 7 (01:36:53):
You?
Speaker 2 (01:36:53):
Let's go go with your taxes. Got Duke two? That
should be three stop two points. I'm sorry you're giving
you're trying to give Florida State two points and Duke
is Florida State one.
Speaker 5 (01:37:02):
Thank.
Speaker 2 (01:37:03):
Okay, So Arkansas is two points and Duke is two points.
The same amount of point every team changes, so could
be a very big disappointment. Duke and Arkansas are on
the same plane. Okay, Okay, two points you get if
that's four points? Okay, so four points for Duke. No,
you get to that's one point? Rag Fairly Dickinson, Jesus,
fairly Dickinson. Won didn't they beat at fifteen as a
(01:37:24):
one or something like that, or a sixteen and a one,
SARS fifteen two or sixteen one? Fairley Dickinson. That's two points.
Kansas City, Oh my gosh, that's difficult. We'll give it
one point though. Rider If that's a zero, that's fine,
Arizona State. That would be James Harden's alma mater. That's
two points. Let's see Washington State or Shamanad probably gonna
(01:37:44):
be Washington State. We'll give him a point. Why not.
Championship round of the Male Invitational. Who knows, Virginia Powerhouse.
That's three points. Southern, they're pretty good, they can be plucky.
Will give it one point. You con they were back
to back national champions recently. That's three points. And then Lemoyne,
very difficult team out of I don't know, somewhere in
(01:38:04):
the somewhere in the northeast that zero points. Maryland Eastern
Shore quite frankly, sounds made up. And then it's into
the conference play. I try to be honest and objective
with you folks, and Ross made it a honestly objective
made a terrible bit out of it. Where where you
have Duke in Florida State, you wanted to be the
(01:38:27):
same amount of points. I didn't have a grandiose scale.
I had a small scale. I want to keep it
a brief segment. You were extending it. Okay, I'm going
to tell you something crazy. I think Duke should count
more than Arkansas. Maybe Arkansas goes deeper in the tournament
this year. You never know. Okay, someone sounds bitter. Mm hmm, okay,
what's a more difficult non conference schedule? In okay, I
(01:38:47):
sound better?
Speaker 4 (01:38:49):
Yeah, yeah, good.
Speaker 2 (01:38:51):
Our schedule is more difficult and we will win more
games and we will celebrate a better, better basketball program,
no question. If a number one recruiting class, you get
the same coach. Now, the coach fails in the final
four a lot, but you've got the same great coach
every single year. And the Longhorns are in a rebuild.
In their first game of the season, they're playing you
constantly rebuilding. Yeah, it's just it's a it's a hot mess. Absolutely,
(01:39:13):
it's a hot messing. But disappointment. Rodney Terry never should
have been retained. Sean Miller's there now, and we'll see
it's like a B higher on an A plus. Who
would have been the A hire Kelvin Sampson. You can't
have him. He didn't want to go to you know,
and go somewhere. Remember the basketball recruiting our coaching honestly,
(01:39:34):
all right, well, our attempt to try to balance out
the non conference schedule to don't work out very well,
and for that, I apologize. We'll tell you better next
time conference light comes up. We have two big Monday
games this year at Ioway staying in at Kansas. Admitute,
you missed the Big twelve basketball. You have to minute
SEC was a better conference last year. Oh did you
(01:39:54):
have more fun playing old missing basketball or you had
more fun playing Baylor?
Speaker 4 (01:39:58):
Baylor?
Speaker 2 (01:39:58):
Of course, come on, come on. Look on the highest
of keys, they weren't better last year, and Unleasia keys
they're much better on all the keys on the Florida keys,
the keys and the White keys, and the all eighty
eight keys, the key on the on the prices right
as much better.
Speaker 4 (01:40:18):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:40:18):
Kentucky sounds pretty tough. They're pretty good, that's prestigious. They're
not in the Big twelve. Of course, Florida the national champions,
Tennessee Alabama's very good, very favorable calls in the second.
You've got a rivalry there, Auburn is great, Oklahoma is
a classic, and they're not in the Big twelve. L
s U reigning national champions, who slap you of h
(01:40:39):
got them on, I'll absolutely destroyed and mauled. Get them
cooop fans dot com, get them. Get them. Let's see,
you're playing the reigning national champs. Do they I don't
see Kentucky on the schedule. They play in Lexington. All right,
we attempted to get away from our astro blues for
a few minutes. Let us have this time. Please, Tennessee
(01:41:00):
and Knoxville. That's tough. I'm really looking forward to that
Maryland Eastern Shore game at the Moody Center. Can you
name Maryland Eastern chorist mascot? Yeah, they're the Hawks. You
don't even know. I see a little bird. Best if
you had to guess the bird? I hope that's right.
It looks like an all right for ten thousand mt bus. Okay,
(01:41:21):
don't look this up. Okay, I let you look at
the logo. Kansas City's mascot is the Buccaneers. That is incorrect.
Hold on, let me look at the logo. Look at
the logans. He being figured out. Lamoy looks like they're
the Dolphins. I don't think eastern North Northeastern New York
would be that would be the place for the kangaroos
(01:41:43):
or the Ruse.
Speaker 7 (01:41:43):
What do you think it is?
Speaker 2 (01:41:44):
It's the Ruse kangaroos, is right, you're right. Yes, I've
done a game. I've done a Kansas City game in
Kansas City. See that's tough. One Maryland Eastern Shore are the.
Speaker 4 (01:41:56):
Hawks? I was right.
Speaker 2 (01:41:58):
Suck it you really guess that right? It was the
logos basketball. That's awful. You get no credit. I mean
it could have been an eagle. Yes, you would have
fifty to fifty chance at it. That's right, all right,
mister Lehigh and towsand hey, we play. We play superior
competition in the league play. We gotta have a little
(01:42:19):
bit of a warm up, not superior competition in the
league play. Let's look at the top twenty five. How
many teams are the SEC versus Big twelve?
Speaker 7 (01:42:27):
A few?
Speaker 2 (01:42:29):
Iowa State, uh Baylor. Big twelve is a very difficult
and in Arizona probably only gonna be in the top
twenty five, you think, okay, Jeff Borzillian, let's see ring
champion Florida Gators.
Speaker 4 (01:42:44):
It's fun.
Speaker 2 (01:42:46):
Oh Yukon's number four on this list. Texas is playing
them St John oh b y us up in the
number six Mber because they spent Yeah they're spending month.
Kentucky's number nine number another SEC team. You know what,
Arkansas's number. Actually, Arkansas is eleven. I had a duke
on this list. There you go eleven, and you're welcome.
(01:43:07):
So you went out. There's a point for you there.
All right, We've got two really good competitive teams, and
hopefully at some point this year we'll talk some college basketball.
Not likely, but we'll try. It's top twenty five, as
you mentioned, Jayhawks are twenty first. This is just on
some ESPN guys. Tennessee top twenty five. NC State wolf
Pack is at the Mally Invitational.
Speaker 5 (01:43:28):
There you go.
Speaker 2 (01:43:29):
Long Hoords are playing there, twenty fourth, ahead of the
Targeels at twenty five, Longhorns, others are receiving votes. Let's go, baby,
let's go. Hey, you win a couple of those games
in that Malle Invitation, you'll get in that top twenty five.
I shouldn't make fun of me. I spend more time
on college Texas basketball than I should mm hm, And
I've suckered you in what do you mean? Suckered me?
(01:43:49):
Massive disappointments and sadness. No, I watch I disappoint myself.
I don't know why. All right, twelve forty three. That
will include our college basketball talkers. I think we've lost
every listener we had. Woo hook him horns. Let's go, baby,
Sean Miller taking into the Promised Lands and be sweating
through his shirts in the tournament.
Speaker 4 (01:44:05):
Let's go.
Speaker 2 (01:44:06):
That's a great line that nobody understands. Somebody did you did?
I'm the only one you understand that? Zero chance? Come on, guys,
don't y'all know?
Speaker 5 (01:44:16):
I don't know.
Speaker 4 (01:44:18):
I thought he was gonna go.
Speaker 2 (01:44:19):
Come on, guys, on the horse. He doesn't know.
Speaker 4 (01:44:23):
Just look at it. Just go through.
Speaker 2 (01:44:24):
Uh, just with google. Sean Miller sweat. Actually, I want
to hear his live reaction. Do it real quick. That's disgusting.
This is not this is not appropriate for major market, right,
why not? I want to hear his live reaction?
Speaker 4 (01:44:36):
What all right?
Speaker 2 (01:44:38):
I'm images discussing?
Speaker 5 (01:44:44):
Is that real?
Speaker 4 (01:44:45):
That's real? Last sweat?
Speaker 2 (01:44:46):
I wanted to hear his reaction. Oh, that's gross. Believe this.
I was on his flight one time and the pilot
was sweating so much that it was like pouring out
of his hair. It was disgusting. So we made it safely.
We landed. We were in the middle of a thunderstrum
for a couple of hours, and we took forever to
get down because apparently everybody in the flight got sick
(01:45:08):
and they had to get somebody from the passenger crew
that was a former pilot and he was super nervous.
It was awful. It was one of the worst thoughts
ever been in my entire life. And just let you know,
I didn't have the fish.
Speaker 7 (01:45:22):
This isn't.
Speaker 2 (01:45:25):
Any plane movies I know. And they ran on a
coffee too. Guess what it's called playing movies? Have I
This sounds so familiar. You're terrible, Matt. What could the
movie about planes be called? All right, let's take a break, break.
Speaker 5 (01:45:54):
A couple.
Speaker 2 (01:45:56):
There is, there's for sure, there is. You know the
the red zone is for unloading and loading only by
the way, or it's the white zon. I forgot seven
one three two one two five seven dotti. All right,
So we opened the show today at ten o'clock with
perhaps my most down moment as an ASTRO observer this year.
(01:46:16):
That'd be fair to say. I mean, we've had the
astros have had some bad losses, and that's gonna happen
over A one sixty two. But it felt like yesterday was,
first of all, a very winnable game A tough luck
loss in a very important week when you're holding on
it for dear life in the American League West, and
you lose Luis Garcia to more elbow discomfort, which means
(01:46:38):
only the worst, and came right out of the game,
right out of the game. Yeah, no, try to rethrow.
No trying to have small talk up there. It was bad.
It's like, yeah, let's get out here, guys. It's not good.
So how am I supposed to treat And I'm asking
for your advice, okay, and you on the radio audience
as well. At seven, one, three, two, two five seven, NINTI.
(01:47:00):
The Astros have twenty seven games left?
Speaker 5 (01:47:04):
Is that right?
Speaker 2 (01:47:04):
Let's see fifteen forty No, less than that they play
one forty five. I think it's seventeen, not twenty seven,
seventeen games left. How do I responsibly treat these next seventeen?
Here's my initial answer. I'm fully vested. I fully want
them to win. I want them to win the America
(01:47:27):
League West. At the very worst, I want them to
get a waldcard spot. I want them to get out
of this runners in scoring position, horrific slump. I want
Brian or Bray you to act like he can be
a closer in the big league's on a consistent basis.
I'm not asking for Christian Walker about three hundred. I
certainly would like him to be back closer to two
fifty than two hundred, but you know, it is what
(01:47:47):
it is. I need my runners in scoring position. I
need jose Al twov eight to not take any chances
on the base pass at all under any circumstance. And
be I mean, I can't even ask him to be
a decent base runner I'm asking for right now. He's futrid.
I would go to just below average. Do I need
to dumb down my expectations or still have this? Hey, guys,
(01:48:11):
everything has gone the wrong direction for a better part
of two months. And when it comes to the injury angle,
that has been bad for six months. And we're sitting
here with seventeen games left to go in the season
and the Astros are still in first place. Wat me
through these the next seventeen games. I just think, I
(01:48:34):
feel like there's a number of different directions we can go,
because you could always rest back on the fact that
they are still in first place. But why did yesterday
hit me so much in the gut? As compared to
other frustrating performances like when they lose to Oakland, or
they lose a game to Baltimore, or they nearly get
no perfect game. Why am I? Why did yesterday hit
(01:48:54):
me so much harder than the other losses in the
last month? Piling up? It keeps happening. They've lost what
seven of the last ten now at this point, it
keeps happening in the same similar fashion with the runners
from with respect to the runners in scoring position, you
had it all yesterday, you had it all. Your starting
(01:49:16):
pitcher left the game with elbow discomfort, You were crappy
with runners in scoring position, Jose al Tuve got thrown out,
and then the one guy you're supposed to be able
to rely on in the back of the bullpen blew
the game. It just added it all hits you at
once in one game, as everything had been piling up,
and to Brian Abray, you for it for a second.
It feels like if he doesn't get the very first guy,
(01:49:38):
we're in for a twenty five pitch, multi minute inning
where it should be up and down, up and down, up,
and then get the three guys out and get out
of the ballpark. I like Brian A Bray, who's still
been very good this season. His numbers are very good.
But yeah, he just looks like he's a little little taxed.
And it happens where it's September tenth. Bullpens look taxed
right now sometimes and Robert how if he's taxed? How
(01:50:03):
are they supposed to hold on there?
Speaker 5 (01:50:04):
There?
Speaker 2 (01:50:06):
Craig Kimberl is not an anything in guy. Go ahead? Sorry, no,
I'm just give me the second best reliever? Is I mean,
is Brian King going to carry the Astros during these
turbulent times when Bryant? When when Brian and you can't?
I mean, that's a lot to put on a situational lefty.
I have a crazy idea, go ahead, win a couple
of games by more than three runs so we didn't
(01:50:26):
have to throw for two days.
Speaker 4 (01:50:28):
I can we get that? Is this?
Speaker 2 (01:50:32):
Is this the craziest thing you ever heard? Well, Saturday,
if you use your leverage guy every other day or
three out of four days all the time to use
leverage and a Saturday eleven nothing, yes exactly. Yesterday just
hit me harder and I was and maybe a part
of us because I just watched my daughter lose a
(01:50:53):
five set match. It was pissed off about help. Yeah
it didn't help, but yesterday was terrible bray. You couldn't
find the strike zone. Uh uh. Astro situational hitting has
been porous all really, frankly ninety percent of the season.
The getting tagged out at third for a break for
All two b my, my, the greatest Astro of them all.
(01:51:15):
That really hurt Ross That that that that sometimes very
rarely in baseball does defensive plays really firing you up,
like taking a home run, awaking and fire up a
team off the wall, But a ground ball to first
base is not supposed to get whatever. The crowd was
at Rogers Center all you know, Tizzy, did you just
(01:51:37):
see that? And our friends at MLB Network are like
slow mowing the on the big on the big wide
view of it. They're saying, look at all two me,
how he did it? I've never seen that in my life.
Or the Astros are inventing new ways to get out,
especially JOSEL two. You want to get picked off first,
(01:52:01):
we got you. You want to be going trying to
stretch out a single and the double getting thrown out,
we got you, bad, stolen base, We got you picked off. Yeah,
back throw from the catcher. We got you. Uh, he
thinks he thinks it's a pass ball, so he runs
for second and it's in the catcher's glove and he
gets thrown out. We got you, first ball, ground ball,
hit the first and we're going to third. Not a lollygagging,
as C. J. Straw would say, but not full sprint.
(01:52:23):
We got you any kind of way you want to
get thrown on the bases. He's doing it. It was
not a lolligag, but it was not run on content right, well,
it was more of a yeah, what's what's what's this
tick down? From a sprint? Let's ask the sprinter atride stride? Okay,
he's striding the third? Was he strunning? Was he ambling?
(01:52:48):
I like that riding to third not sprinting? Tews you
where we are because the squad, we're watching the different
ways of implosion and we're supposed to be celebrating, hopefully
an America League championship. Boy, thought tell you what next
week at dyk in Park, y'all better be loud and
if I dare catch you doing the wave, I will
(01:53:08):
find you and hunt you down like a rabid dog.
Who cares if they're doing just win the games they
do the they do the way for nine innings. I
don't care if they win. Let's go. You're saying, you're
saying to me, the only way the Astros win is
that the fans do the way for nine innings. I
did not say that though. All right, uh final hour
of the show will feature our conversation with Brian Bogas Sivik.
(01:53:31):
You will also feature a visit with Willie Fritz. University
Houston coach Cougar is going to take on Colorado on
Friday night, and we got believe it or not. Today
the category is all right, by the way, rotten five tomorrow?
What at twelve fifty? So you could actually go home
today and do it, dude, the Texans deserve to be
(01:53:52):
in the rotten five. I say, you know, but it's
not my it's not my rotten five. I'll get my
research team. Ooh, who's your research team? So there's several
of us? All right, seven one three two, one two
five seven nauty seven to one three two one two
five to minute. You're saying, Matt, where's all this Textans
talk today? They didn't practice today. They were off again.
(01:54:12):
They've been a lot off days. They haven't seen the
field since what Sunday. We're gonna have to go hard Thursday, Friday, Saturday,
and then the Buccaneers and Baker Maryfield here on Monday night.
We'll get a deeper dive in that later in the week.
Seven one, three, two, one two, five. Seven weeks is
the mac Thomas Show with Ross. All Right, Ross and
(01:54:37):
I just talked during the break and we're gonna try
a little example here, and we're only gonna do this
for one segment because we've got very limited time here.
So Ross here goes nothing.
Speaker 4 (01:54:46):
Okay.
Speaker 2 (01:54:47):
We have doomed and gloomed and we have tried to
be as positive as we can for the entire season. Yeah,
we don't take things too seriously. When things are going well.
We don't think the sky is falling. When the team
slumps or goes into on us, I lose it long
losing streak. It could be worse. We've seen worse. We've
seen worse. We go back to twenty ten. They can
(01:55:07):
get worse. But today was the day that was the
breaking point. Last night for me was a breaking point.
I'm gonna I don't know if this is gonna work.
What is there someone out there that can get me
off the ledge because Bogas of It couldn't do it, No,
(01:55:28):
he couldn't. Is somebody to steal a phrase from one
Bill Joel keeping the faith? If you've been listening to
show for a length of time, today, I'm down ross concern.
I don't know if you're all the way down, but
i'm Yesterday for me was a tough one seven and
(01:55:49):
the last ten and then another starter got injured and
left the game with elbow discum. Not good, Bob, you
already had two starters. Get Tommy John this year. You
don't know who your bullpen is. You know you don't.
You don't have your faith in your ninth inning guy.
You don't really have an eighth inning guy. Lance mccullors
is just gonna sit in the bullpen and do nothing.
(01:56:11):
Who can hang out? Who gets in the game first?
Logan Van Way Von White, Van Way, Why Way? Why?
Speaker 5 (01:56:18):
Then?
Speaker 2 (01:56:18):
Why? Or Lance mcallors? Who's Nextican in the game? Logan, See,
that's not the answer we want. You're not paying Logan
van why eighteen million dollars a year?
Speaker 4 (01:56:29):
All right?
Speaker 2 (01:56:29):
So now I can't shake myself. Yeah, if you can
call this show in the next five minutes, all we
got is five minutes and taught me off this ledge.
I'll take it because you know what I did that
for y'all. I mean, I mean, I can give you
positive things about the team. I can too. You're steal
in theory, have a great one two punch and Hunter
(01:56:51):
Brown and from about this you got a great one
punch one two punch fromber is an egg. He was good,
he's good. Last time he went out ten only gave
you a quality start. That's true. Well, well, seven innings
and four run ball, but it wasn't one of the unearned,
was it.
Speaker 5 (01:57:08):
Maybe?
Speaker 2 (01:57:08):
I don't know. I hope you're right. You're right, You're right.
It was close. Seven innings of four. You could win.
You can win games like that. Coray has been good.
He's gonna turn around all two Day's gonna snap out
of what he's going and the opinion and Alvarez are
good at the top of your lineup. That's all you
got is your case closed. Das had three hits yesterday.
(01:57:32):
Oh yeah, Cat's waking up at game one. Okay to
go out, but it's there now, it's there. Uh, Victor
Carrettini is a good pinch hitter. Jake Myers is back.
He's got to hit every game since you come back.
That feels good. I predicted four hits this series. He's
got one, so he's twenty five percent of the way there.
(01:57:55):
Let's get three today, baby, Let's go all right? I'm ready. Okay,
Between me and you and Matt Ross, how do you
think you're doing so far? As I watched a Cal
Rowley highlight of a home run, what's it goin? Like
sixty home runs?
Speaker 3 (01:58:14):
Now?
Speaker 4 (01:58:15):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (01:58:16):
No, he can't have that many.
Speaker 9 (01:58:17):
I know.
Speaker 2 (01:58:17):
I think he's got fifty three. Maybe they'll bring up
the AO Wes standings and I did a jump scare.
Uh dare I check the fangrass playoff odds? We got
bogus ofic in five minutes. Think, okay, okay, so here
we go. Can you do something that I feel like
I've done for you for the last sixteen years in
(01:58:38):
this radio station, talk you off the ledge sports Harvy,
I've talked to you, and the Astros have the most
the highest percentage to win the AOS of anybody in
the in the division. That's good. Forty seven. All right,
Remember when the Rockets are down three to one, did
I say the season was over?
Speaker 7 (01:58:57):
No?
Speaker 2 (01:58:58):
Did I tell you the Astros would have suffer against Oakland,
Kansas City with some one divisions?
Speaker 4 (01:59:02):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (01:59:04):
Yeah, over when the Germans bomb per Horbery, we say
it was over. We brought up history in the show
A little base. It's a movie quote. Some of y'all
got that. I appreciate y'all. Okay, here we go, Charles
seven ninety at one O.
Speaker 20 (01:59:20):
Wait, hello, Charles, Remember two years ago when the Astros
needed to win one game to win the division or
the text the Rangers need to win one game to
win the division?
Speaker 12 (01:59:33):
Yes, sir, and the Astron the division. Yeah, it's gonna
be okay. It doesn't matter how bad things look. The
Astros figure it out. When it's over and done, the
Astros are going to be the champions of this division.
Speaker 2 (01:59:48):
Boom, Thank you, Charles, Charles. Charles filled it up for us.
ROSSI he's got your feeling good? Now better okay? Jose
and Laporte on seveninty Hello, jose.
Speaker 10 (02:00:00):
Man, listen to when you got blue balls on the mound.
Speaker 7 (02:00:03):
Nobody's scoring.
Speaker 5 (02:00:08):
Not bad?
Speaker 2 (02:00:11):
First blue balls reference on the show today. Yeah, as
hog nuts approved. Shina, oh Shina, you're on seven Eye.
Speaker 19 (02:00:20):
Hello, good afternoon. So you know, just want to say,
you know, it was a gut punch last night. I
agree with a lot of what y'all are saying, But
what I keep in the back of my mind is
the team that's hottest going into the postseason can make
a run for it. We've seen it before, if this
team can figure it out and get hot. We saw
it in twenty eleven with the Saint Louis Cardinals. They
were over ten games out at the beginning of the
(02:00:42):
September from making the playoffs, and they made it in
the last series of.
Speaker 2 (02:00:48):
The season. They're actually playing Houston.
Speaker 19 (02:00:50):
They made it because I think the Braves lost and
then they go on to win the World Series. You
get hot at the right time, and we know these
astros can do that. We saw them do it in June.
Hot at the right time, they can make a run
for it and surprise.
Speaker 2 (02:01:02):
All of us. Mike Drop, thank you. Seventeen games left
from us. Beat beat the Mariners in the series, beat
the Raiders in the series. You gain a game on
both of them. You reduced You stay with me. You
(02:01:23):
reduce the magic number. Yeah, you got three with Atlanta,
who's mailing it in, and then you get six with
the A's and the Angels, who are thinking about where
they're going on their vans. Can't con vacation that shuld
dominate bad teams where they're They're inviting Jonathan to go
as long as he tips, but he doesn't like to
tip very often.
Speaker 6 (02:01:42):
So he's gonna get the prepaid all inclusive, see, and
then then I'll just tip the every every time I
get a beer a little shy or you know what,
Matt loves the lemon drop.
Speaker 2 (02:01:50):
I might get. I like lemon drop. This is on
the beaches, and then drinks pretty good too. But all right,
let me squeeze in Jerry and Tomball and then we're
gonna get back to our buddy, Brian Bogus Evic. I
think that's the call she had it. They all did great.
Do you feel a little bit better? I feel amazing,
(02:02:11):
Remember tomorrow? And kind of sleepy Kendrick Lamar song We'll
See or Faith by George Michael Sure why not? Or
free Falling by Tom Petty. One of those three will
be the introduction songs to around the show. Jerry on
seven on A Hello Jerry.
Speaker 10 (02:02:29):
Hey guys, glad to be part of your show.
Speaker 21 (02:02:31):
Hey, I've been an astro stand my whole life, last
fifty eight years, and I just don't feel this team
has the uh has it to do it. Too many injuries,
too many not enough enthusiasm out there, not getting.
Speaker 2 (02:02:45):
Hot at the right time. The hell zobs they were
looking for. We were looking for people to pump us up.
Now he just depressed ourselves what he was supposed to
be pumping you up. Yeah, it worked, It worked just
the opposite what the hell man didn't work at all,
not at all. Brian bogus Sevic is joining us next.
Speaker 4 (02:03:06):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (02:03:07):
Willie Fritz gonna pump us up for the Cougar football
team coming up as well. So we got that. But
first Ross, let's take that football knowledge of ours and
make some money.
Speaker 5 (02:03:14):
Please.
Speaker 2 (02:03:19):
Yes, it is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross Cougar's
head coach Willie Fritz coming up in the next segment
right now, gonna bring you a good conversation with Brian
bogas Sevic spased City Home Network. Of course, former astro
always brings us great conversation about your Houston Astros. Unfortunately,
conversation surrounding them isn't great as they lost a heartbreaker yesterday.
(02:03:41):
Brian Abray you giving up the game in the ninth inning.
Conversation started off with Brian Bogasvic talking about what he's
seeing from him.
Speaker 7 (02:03:50):
Yeah, you know, when a braid who's right. It doesn't
matter who you are, what style of here you are.
His stuff is overpowering enough to get the best contact
lineups to swing and miss. I mean, the whiff rates
that he gets on each of his pitches individually are crazy,
but they have to.
Speaker 2 (02:04:08):
Be working together, right.
Speaker 7 (02:04:09):
He's got to get that good crossfire angle on this
fastball to his glove side to set up the big
sweeping slider that comes off of the same plane but
goes even further out of the zone. And you know,
if you go back and look at kind of the
pitch chart yesterday, there were misses outside of the zone.
That's a problem. But the fastballs in particular that were
(02:04:30):
in the zone weren't getting to that arm side or
to the glove side. They were in the middle of
the plate. They were hit able pitches. There were pitches
that weren't going to set up the slider going down
in a way out of the zone, and anytime a
pitcher is missing up into the arm side, the first
thing that you think of is fatigue, and then you
start looking at the velocities. It was a lot of
ninety five and ninety six is yesterday, when typically we
(02:04:53):
see ninety seven to ninety eight, And honestly, in a
situation like that where it's a gotta have game and
against the first place team in the American League, you
would think a little bit extra juice run. And I
was waiting to see ninety nine and maybe one hundred.
So it's starting to look like he's got I don't
think the closer thing has gotten to him. I don't
(02:05:13):
think you know, he's an eighth inning guy that can't
do the ninth inning. I think he's the one guy
who's been the constant down there all year. You know,
he hasn't had an injury, he hasn't had performance affect him,
and him floated in and out of the high leverage situation.
It's been full go, and they've probably they've leaned on him,
you know, even when Hayter was there more heavily than anybody.
(02:05:35):
And it's just it's starting to look like it's catching
up to him.
Speaker 2 (02:05:38):
Yeah, and that just begs the question, what's the solution?
Just a couple of days off, just something he has
to work through. And I mean, it'd be nice if
if the offense could go out there and score a
bunch of runs, but they just end up in so
many high leverage situations because of the nature of how
the team is.
Speaker 7 (02:05:54):
Yeah, you hit it on the nose right there. There
is no solution from a pitching standpoint. You only got the.
Speaker 5 (02:05:59):
Guys you got.
Speaker 7 (02:06:00):
You only are you know, have the availability of what
you got. And if it's a closing situation, it's going
to be Brian A Bray you and you're going to
have to live and die with him because that's what
you got and that's what you're gonna have to do.
The solution or you know, way around it is exactly that.
It's to score more runs. You know, it's not if
(02:06:20):
you lose a one run game because the bullpen gives
it up. It's not necessarily on the bullpen. Guys aren't perfect.
Guys are going to give up runs here and there.
Complimentary baseball is there being times when you score so
many runs early that your starting pitcher can really settle
in and just pound the strike zone and worry about
nothing but getting deep into the game. You know, it's
creating situations that aren't saved, situations so you can throw
(02:06:43):
to the guys who haven't thrown in five days, who
are fresh versus versus the guys who've thrown, you know,
three out of the last five days and been getting
worn out all year. And we've seen far too few
of those games where it's the offense just taking over
and saying, hey, pitchers, you guys essentially have the day
off today.
Speaker 2 (02:07:02):
Brian Bogusvic is here on Sports Talk seven ninety. It's
been a tough goal of it the last fifteen thirty
games or so for jose al toove and I find
myself Brian questioning, like, Okay, is this just a typical
Jose al to a slump or is this some decline?
What are you seeing from him at the plate? A
(02:07:23):
little bit, a little bit of both.
Speaker 7 (02:07:25):
Maybe you know, he's he's always a guy who when
he struggles is going to get super aggressive, so you're
going to see some wild swing. He's also a guy
who you know, all throughout the course of his career
will will hunt pitches and guess in certain situations, and
every once in a while, you know, he guesses wrong
and takes a swing that looks ridiculous. But you know,
(02:07:47):
it's an extended kind of version of that right now,
which makes me think that, you know, is he in
a situation where he's having to do more of those
things to kind of keep up and less and less
just straight up hitting. You know, Granted, he can always
break out of it and look completely locked in for
the next you know, months plus and just go on
(02:08:08):
a tear that's still in there. We've seen him get
hot this season, but it just looks like a guy
who's relying more and more on hunting one pitch at
a time or one location at a time, versus a
guy who, you know, there were times when it didn't
matter what speed or what location he's through it and
he could hit it in any direction at any time,
you know, trying to get himself out of it. But
(02:08:28):
it just it hasn't happened recently, Bougie.
Speaker 2 (02:08:31):
The runners in scoring position number has been the one
that's discouraging so much. We look at every single loss
and we can go back to that one particular category
is there some sort of magic elixir that you would
give a particular hitter, whether it's a different approach to
the plate, whether it's swinging early, swinging later, trying to
(02:08:51):
position the you know, to pull the ball, go oppo, whatever,
because it just feels like that. So much of the
angst is these key hitters in this astro lineup with
runners at second and third or base is loaded. A
couple of times in that game last week against the Yankees,
when the ninth inning, with the tying run at the plate,
Correa strikes out, Walker strikes out.
Speaker 7 (02:09:12):
That that hurt.
Speaker 2 (02:09:13):
Those aren't terrible, terrible ways to end games. What do
you do when you get the guys on the bases
and you're just looking for that one clutch hit.
Speaker 7 (02:09:23):
Yeah, there's there's a lot of things that come into play.
First of all, crazy as this sounds, the thing that
correlates most of hitting with runners in scoring position is
just team batting average. In general. Generally, teams that can
hit hit with runners in scoring position. But that's not
been the you know, the extras are nearab they're probably
in the top third of the league still in batting
average overall, and then we see their struggles with runners
(02:09:43):
in scoring position. So that's kind of you know, can't
make heads or tails of that. But I think the
thing that you would look at now, right, hitting with
runners in scoring position used to be all about take
what's out there. Right, there's a man on third, less
than two outs, just getting in second and third, get
him over maybe, or get him in maybe get the
guy over at the same time, and kind of take
(02:10:06):
what's out there. But now you know, there's such a
different approach to hitting, where it's all about trying to
have big innings, especially early in games, because that's what
wins games, right, You have to put up big, crooked numbers.
There are very very few two to one games anymore. Right,
everybody's getting on a race to five or a race
to six, and you have to have bigginnings to do so.
(02:10:26):
But when you're struggling with runners in scoring position, sometimes
I would think just take a step back, you know,
if you're up there and it's a man on third
with one out in the second inning, instead of taking
the approach of like, Okay, I'm having my regular at bat,
maybe I hit a double that'll score and put me
in scoring position, will be in position to have that
big inning. Just take what's out there, maybe a little
(02:10:46):
bit earlier in the bat, earlier in the game, cash
in one and maybe just that gets the ball rolling
a little bit.
Speaker 2 (02:10:53):
All right. That again is Brian bogus Sevic every Wednesday
eleven o'clock. We've replaced some of that in this hour
the show. It's always good insight. I've been so happy
that he's been able to part of our radio show
and gives us that unique player in sight. All right,
Willi Fritz is up next, rossing and after. Willie Fritz
Fromber's back on Twitter and I don't I'll give you
(02:11:13):
the date. It hasn't been pretty. The replies are not great.
Hopefully he doesn't read them. He needs to learn that
button you can turn off replies and people and only
if you follow them or something like that. Yeah, we'll
give you that. So Willie and from are on Twitter
one twenty seven Sports Talk seven any. The Joint Chiropractic
is the official chiropractor of University of Houston Athletics and
(02:11:37):
they help us bring Willie Fritz to you every week
before the Big Game. Two days before the big Game,
which will be Friday night at TDECU Stadium against the
Colorado Buffalo's Willie Fritz is with us here on the show. Willie,
I didn't realize you and Dian were so tight. He
said some very nice things about you earlier this week.
Speaker 17 (02:11:56):
Oh, I would not say that. You know, he seems
like the guy what he had to go through, you know,
these last few months just been so positive in that
remote roll model for everyone. You know, it's battling cancer
and just uh, I've met him a few times and
always heard a lot of good things about him.
Speaker 2 (02:12:16):
Can you really talk nil with your fellow coaches or
is that somewhat of a taboo conversation piece because everybody's
got to do it a little bit differently.
Speaker 5 (02:12:25):
Oh, you know, you talk a little bit about it,
but everybody's different. You know, no question about it.
Speaker 17 (02:12:29):
And it was you'll you'll you'll talk to uh, you know,
different schools, and you know, I've been doing this a
long time, so I know a lot of coaches, you know,
across the country, and not just in the Big twelve,
but in other leagues as well, and you'll compare notes
a little bit and see how they're doing things.
Speaker 3 (02:12:47):
Well.
Speaker 2 (02:12:48):
The first things first, before we get to the game,
let's recap what happened last Saturday. First of all, to
hold a two football teams in two different games, so
a total of one defensive touchdown, you can't be more
pleased of their defense it now.
Speaker 5 (02:13:01):
Yeah, they've really done a great job.
Speaker 17 (02:13:03):
You know, Austin Armstrong or defensive coordinator, and all the
guys on the defensive staff, that's a lot of them.
And then obviously the players. I mean they've bought into
we're on something different than what we did last year.
And we're a good defense play last year, but it's
something different that The main thing that we do I
think an excellent job of is tackling takeaways, you know,
(02:13:27):
playing a great leverage. We tackled it real good again
this past week. We tackled great week one, and that's
just you know, the scheme is very important, but it's
not as important as the fundamentals, especially the tackling tackling component,
and you know, coach Armstrong and the staff really does
a great job of emphasizing the teaching it to the
guys every single day.
Speaker 2 (02:13:48):
It was seven to three at the half, you get
the touchdown late to take the lead at the intermission.
Was there any sense of maybe we should let things
loose a little bit more in the second half, because
that wegman seventy five a touchdown throw was very impressive.
Speaker 17 (02:14:03):
Yeah, you know, we uh you know, we had a
lot of opportunities. Uh you know, it's just, uh, you know,
like I've said the first few weeks, we're just we're
trying to get everybody together on the same page. Uh,
there's a you know, sometimes you run some deep outs
and receiver doesn't run it exactly the way you needed
(02:14:23):
to run it, or task protection you know wasn't fund
for just another split second a count. But on that
long touchdown pass to Stephan Johnson, you know, just great
protection and uh tagles throw by Connor and obviously great
catch and run by by Stephan, And uh, you know,
we want to we want to be able to stretch
(02:14:45):
the field vertically and have a pretty good job of
stretching horizontally.
Speaker 5 (02:14:48):
Do we need to get more shots down the field and.
Speaker 17 (02:14:51):
The run game opens up the pass game, and the
pass game opening opens up the run game, and uh
you know we're still you know, getting better, and uh
you know we would take another step forward this week.
Speaker 2 (02:15:02):
Well you took the words right out of my mouth
about the running game opens up the passing game. Dean
Connors had a breakout game for you. Clearly playing against
his old team had to be something special, but you
want to see that obviously through the course of the year.
What attracted you to getting him to your campus And
obviously the breakout game against the Owls was something thing,
but you wanted to do some things obviously during the
course of the season as well.
Speaker 5 (02:15:25):
Well.
Speaker 17 (02:15:25):
You know, I've seen him when he was at Rice,
when I was at two Lane, and then also obviously
last year when we played Rice.
Speaker 5 (02:15:32):
And when we got on the portal, that was you know,
we we we had good backs.
Speaker 17 (02:15:38):
We've got good backs, but we got you know, there's
a chance to have another guy, and that's a that's
a position, you know where there's a lot of wear
and tear on those guys. And you know, thank goodness
we grabbed him and got him because you know, we're
shots is now out for Strahan Samford is now out
for the season and we were able to you know,
(02:16:00):
bring Dean in and we still got good depth there Stacy,
Steve and DJ Butler and hopefully we're going to get
Jamary and Burnett back in a hurry, but uh, you know,
he just does everything well. He's a good pass receiver,
he's uh you know, does a good job running in
the corps between the tackles. He does a good job
running out on the perimeter. He's a good uh blocker.
(02:16:23):
But the main thing is he just doesn't make very
many mistakes. You know, he lines up right, does you
know it, does his assignment properly, and you know it's
so so important, you know, all positions, but particularly on
the offensive tie of the ball with running backs, make
sure that they know exactly what they're doing because you know,
they're involved in protection, they're involved in you know, pastor
out concepts, and obviously running the ball as well.
Speaker 10 (02:16:46):
Well.
Speaker 2 (02:16:46):
All that is good and looking forward for the win
coming up here against Colorado. They went with three quarterbacks
against Delaware last week. Earlier this week, obviously, coach Prime
decided to go with one of the young men and
tell you who the starter wasn't I don't think he
was doing it for your benefit, maybe just for the
kids benefit. But even with that being said, my assumption
is your scout team and your defense will be preparing
(02:17:08):
for more than one quarterback that may not play on
this game against the Buffaloes.
Speaker 17 (02:17:13):
Yeah, you know, they they're all probably a little bit different,
but they've got an offensive system that they run and
it's similar, irregardless of who's back there playing quarterback.
Speaker 5 (02:17:26):
Form same thing with us.
Speaker 17 (02:17:28):
You know, we're gonna you know, there'll be a little
bit things we do different if we played another quarterback,
but you know, buy and large, it's going to be
the you know, the same offense. You know, whether they
play the guys's been playing quite a bit, you know,
the first couple of games, or a young freshman or
this guy that they're saying's going to start. So you know,
(02:17:50):
we're just preparing for the offense and then understanding you know,
there really hasn't been enough place to be able to,
you know, in this season to see the difference you know,
with all three you know, and uh, you know we're
playing you know, two games and really split in duty
the second game. Don't have a real large bought body
(02:18:11):
of your work. We'll see who's playing when we we
get out there and the balls kicked off at six
thirty five Friday night.
Speaker 2 (02:18:19):
Six thirty five should be a real nice ballbing night
for those people in Denver who like the thin air.
I'm sure that I don't know how coach Proma get
ready for that, but I don't care if they do
or not. I hope your guys are ready for you.
Cramping hasn't been too bad so far. But man, this
weather has not been conducive for fall football yet, has it.
Speaker 5 (02:18:37):
Yeah, you know, it has been the last couple of days,
but you know the two days ago.
Speaker 17 (02:18:40):
Heck, I think by the end of practice is about
seventy seventy seven seventy.
Speaker 5 (02:18:44):
Eight degrees starting to a little bit.
Speaker 17 (02:18:47):
But uh, you know, you just got to play, you know,
irregardless of what's going on. And uh, you know, we're
really lucky and fortunate that we've got a you know,
a beautiful indoor facility where we can go in for
part of practice, and we got two really really nice
grass practice fields, and then we can always go out
to the stadium as well, which.
Speaker 5 (02:19:08):
We did today.
Speaker 17 (02:19:09):
You want to get work and you know the venue
that you're going to be playing in, and so we're
fortunately we got unbelievable facilities here.
Speaker 2 (02:19:18):
Congratulations coach on this nice start. Looking forward to a
big crowd on Friday and another victory and open up
big twelve League competition with the victory. Thank you for
the time, and we'll see on Friday.
Speaker 5 (02:19:28):
Thank you very much.
Speaker 2 (02:19:29):
Go Kook's we got it. Thank you well. I appreciate it.
Willy Fritz with us here on Sports Talk seveney and
he's brought to you again by the Joint Chiropractic, the
official chiropractor of University of Houston Athletics and hopefully good
crowd out there. Tickets are still available uhcougars dot com
slash tickets and seven to one three Go kook so
ROSSI I did check on Farmer Valdez his Twitter account.
Speaker 4 (02:19:51):
He follows it. Why did you do that?
Speaker 2 (02:19:53):
Because I just thought I would. Frank, let's kill the time.
There are two tweets that he put out, one on
the twenty third and one yet yesterday, August August twenty third. Okay,
el finale, l ega solo Caandro decides or in dirte.
(02:20:14):
I don't know what that means. Good pronunciation though, thank you.
Speaker 19 (02:20:20):
So.
Speaker 2 (02:20:21):
A lot of September replies are coming in. This is
after the Performanceity threw the ball right at Cesar Salazar's chest. Okay,
you need to get your ass beat by the team
for that blank blank, you pulled. That's some low life. Blank. Jesus,
you suck. That's a nice You are a bad player
who doesn't know how to listen to his catcher. You
(02:20:43):
don't deserve to be in the majors. Wow, you're already
a piece of blank. How many of these people have
their actual name and picture of themselves on the very
way very few? Just curious. You're already a piece of blank.
It's good that you're almost done in the big leagues.
What you did today is for cowards, biggest p and baseball. Yeah,
you resign, you bum loser, Blank, your mother you have
(02:21:06):
few balls. Jesus, blank, your blank mother loser. You're an
emotional little bee. You don't get angry because you lost
your cool. You seem like a little girl. What you
did last night was wrong. You need some anger management
(02:21:27):
and stop being a mentally weak dude. I hope they
trade you. The trade you to the Rockies. Jesus, you
ain't blank. You don't even deserve to be a part
of this team anymore. Gfy blank, blank, you look like
a girl with that hair. Live laugh love. Actually, that
(02:21:49):
one's funny, absolutely blanky thing to do to a teammate. Blank,
you're blank, total blank, move low key, and we'll go
to you all like a girl that was part of
