Speaker 1 (00:00):
This is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross ten.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
I want an h chap good morning. Look to a
Wednesday of issue Matt Thomas Show. Ross. This is Sports
Talk seven ninety. Don't let me do too, but Ross,
(00:34):
they are Look. I criticized my partner for his lack
of work ethic, but he put in the hour that
I don't know, It's just easier I put in a
bunch of hours. I've been here sixteen years. I've never
said no to a single assignment. I know. I do
postgame shows, I do pregame shows. I come out and
(00:56):
I'm engineering broadcast tomorrow. I know, why is that? Why
do I have no work ethic? Because I watch every
single game? I tease you. I tweet during games, and
I've got no work ethic. I tease because I care.
Point being is this? The man was a grinder yesterday
(01:16):
a bunch of pregame shows. What two weeks ago, ogainst
you tell me I'm number one, No, you're number one, Ross,
And you did the postgame show and you took calls, Yes,
a lot of calls, lots of calls. And one guy
wanted Joe a spot of fire because he calls up
the wrong players from the miners. You think it's bad,
now the rest of we could be.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
I'll be back here tonight, baby woo woo.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
Let's go Hunter Brown, please win this game. By the way,
five and one is still in play. It is Rossie.
Help me out here, help me out. For example, yes,
fourteen and three is on the table for the Texans.
It is on the table, on the table. Yes, now
it's rolling off the table quickly, especially because you can't
(02:07):
imagine that Baltimore would lose two straight home games. Yeah,
wait are they off? Yeah, they go to Kansas City
this week and then they're home for the Texans. Got
I mean ROSSI three hits, three hit. It was feeble.
(02:29):
There was at least eight popouts by the Astros. We
talked to Joe's body yesterday and we're like, hey, are
they trying are they going to change approaching Sacramento? And
if if he hadn't told us no, So I'm just
gonna believe him and say this is coincidence. It looked
like they were just trying to pop everything out of
the building they hit. They had eight pop ups in
the game, at least at least and they were complaining
(02:53):
about it. Was hard to see. Okay, well, I mean
you played there before that drop ball. Christian Walker talked
about the post game, like, yeah, the twilight hours and
it was a pop up in the first inning and
nobody could see the ball. Christian Javier was like, is
this mind. First of all, rule number one for baseball,
those of you that are novices, you never want to
catch the pitcher to catch the pop blow. He is
(03:14):
supposed to get Franklin get out of the way, right,
And I think there was so much hesitat was trying
to get out of the way. It was in a
perfect world. It was Christian Walker's ball, but he lost
it in the lights. He was like he was throwing
his hands up, like I can't see the ball, guys, damn.
And it didn't matter. It didn't matter no, because they
got three hits. They were single, three singles, three singles
(03:36):
in the game. It did not matter. The the bats
were terrible. Everybody went over except for Christian Walker, who
got two hits, and the Ironty Is who got one.
Anybody else hung in a name went over. Holds two
bay check, Yes, Carlos Kraa did draw two. He got
(03:57):
two walks, three pass gut in air Diez check uh
Cam Smith? Oh yeah got one? Yeah? Oh sorry on
your guy one? Cam Smith check Jake Myers checkbo. How's
a fan club. I'm just curious. We're feeling good because
you know that run. He's been struggling, but he's been
getting on bass because he also ran into the final
out of the game on Saturday on the double play ball. Yeah,
(04:19):
I mean that was an exceptional catch by Robles or whoever
was in the field. Yeah, that was an exceptional catch.
But he did run into the final out. That did hurt.
And he's been he's been getting on base since he
come back. He's got an O PS. Look, he's got
(04:40):
an OPS to seven thirty three. He's supposed to be
basically your nine hitter. Jake Myer's been good. Fan club
is releasing a statement We're satisfied with Jake Myers level
of play now he did He also didn't get a
ball last night? Was that last night? The days are
blending together and I was up. I was on air
until one twenty in the morning. Yeah, he ran on
a ball a little bit late, caught it and then
(05:01):
couldn't hang on to it because he got a bad jump.
It was a ninety five percent catch probability, and normally
the greatest asset Jake has in the field is getting
great jumps. He reads the ball. He didn't read the
ball well. Uh, Christian Walker dropped the ball. The A's
couple those players were having trouble see in the ball.
It was happening all over the place last night, unfortunately,
and again I will say it didn't matter because you
(05:23):
did nothing at the plate. Nothing. Yeah, you can. You
could kind of live with the defensive adventures. I'll call
it that, Yes, if you could. You got three hits.
I mean, I guess the sun was in the eyes
of the players and they weren't in the eyes of
the open players. I don't know, maybe somebody's putting lasers
in their eyes. Because Jeffrey springs three five innings of
(05:45):
one run ball. I mean, there wasn't a guy in
that group that I was like, oh, that's a pitch
of the Astros should be concerned about. His era is
a three sixty this month, but that's also with the
Astros start five oh four last month. He had not
been good and it was a lefty. That's another thing too,
the Astros, which Sue Sanchez was gonna play because he
(06:06):
doesn't ever hit. I think he pats oh fifteen had
no or he came in at the end of the
game win over one with a strikeout. So yeah, you
normally this lineup has been pretty good against lefties because
you're so righty stacked. Yeah, and they could they couldn't
do anything, And that's happened a couple of times lately.
They're out of gas. They are out of gas. They
(06:27):
are out of gas. You said this two weeks ago
with the analogy, right, Oh yeah, we're trying to go
ten miles and got three miles left in the tank.
That's what it's that, that's that's rung true. That analogy
from a few weeks ago has rung true. So what
can I do for you today? Because I mean, you
put I'm so proud of you put those that the
tenth inning show, nine o'clock game that give me some
wacky ass crap going on back and that loads late
(06:48):
night hours. We had one guy drop an f bomb,
as I said, one guy wanted Joe spotifire because he
calls up the wrong player hashtag safe harbor. Of course,
we had a guy wanting to actually the guy. It
was a very civil, nuanced discussion with the guy who
wanted the hitting coaches fired. Okay, And I mean, yeah,
how could I How could if somebody called in and say, hey,
(07:11):
everybody needs to be fired and this team is bad.
How do I argue with that at this point? No,
when you have had when you have had this, and again,
I don't blame the hitting coaches very close exactly, yes,
go ahead, I don't blame the hitting coaches. But when
you have had this prolonged, just nobody performing over expectations
(07:33):
or nobody being that great surprise. Hitting coaches or coach
usually is the fall. Guys's the low hanging fruit. Yeah,
and look, jose Al Tuvey has gotten progressively worse the
last three seasons ops nine fifteen, down to seven to
ninety last year and then seven sixty six this year.
He's thirty five years old, he's hitting home runs, but
(07:54):
he looks like he's getting over the hill. Christian Walker,
even though he got your two hits last night, he
looks like he's getting over the hill. Well, I'm wondering
about jan or Diez, as he's gotten progressively worse for
three years. About the legs wearing down with catching every
day and then and then Jordan Alvarez hasn't been there.
Jeremy Pane is having a career renaissance, but he he
hasn't been out there either because he's got the oblique
(08:15):
strain that if we come, if we blended the two
lineups last night, the first five hitters are all A's.
In my opinion, it sucked. Kurtz Langelirs Soderstrom, Rooker, and
Jacob Wilson all hit ahead of anyone in the Astros
(08:36):
lineup last night. Yeah, it's so sad. And the A's
have been playing better. It's the oh, it's the Sacramento A's.
But they've been over the last fifty games. I think,
what was it, They had won like twenty nine and
the Astros have won like twenty twenty four or something
like that. I mean, Ross, we're talking about. This is
a four to twenty five baseball team, winning wise and
(08:56):
what And you were excited about the Rangers sweep. I
I did get excited, and I kept thinking, you know what,
this Astro team has done a lot of things to
surprise this in the last week. It's this glory era
of Astros baseball. Blah, blah blah blah blah. They're gonna
get past this, They're gonna go overcome everything, because it's
(09:17):
the great storyline. Sometimes you have writer's block and sometimes
you can't write that great ending that they have pulled
the rabbit out of their hat so many times. I
think the analogy I made, They've been Jason Vorhees, and
he keeps coming back no matter what you do, and
(09:37):
at some point at the end of the movie, Jason
Vorhees dies. Though how many times have I seen Jason
Vorhees in a movie? You you don't like horror movies,
That is correct, So what would you say the first one?
Maybe you saw? No, Okay, that's fine, I don't care.
I'm not a big horror film guy. I'm not gonna
crush you for that. But it's funny because when I
bring it up that I don't like it, people are like, oh,
you know, it's not real. But it doesn't mean I
(09:58):
can't get scared by it. I know Maddy get skeered.
That's okay. I'm sensitive, though obsensitive. All right, you'd better
watch two women spit on each other in a soap opera,
and that's okay. I mean a catfight. I enjoy who
doesn't uh Man, remember the good times, folks, remember that
(10:20):
sweeping in Dodger Stadium. But that's what I'm saying. I
don't want the next week, which could be ultimately just
torture to watch to ruin what has been amazing, run
a ride. I mean, it's been fun. I've had a
great time. You've had a great time. Two World Series champions,
no news, playoff appearances, well, fully healthy, they'd be American
League favorites in my eyes, because the Tigers are faltering
(10:41):
down the stretch. I'm still not a believer in the Guardians,
even though they're doing it with smoking mirrors playing Blue
Jay's Yankees tell you the DREU Seattle's the best team
right now playing as sure. Yeah, I would say Seattle
and in Houston would be American League favorites if they're
both fully yeah. Yeah, all right. The radio program works
like this. You call in at seven one three, two,
one two five seven ninety seven to one three. All right,
(11:03):
let's just reread Jones goming back. It's all good, Joan,
I'm I'm just last. Please come on, Ross's We've said
way more things than each other. Love you Joan and
whatever seven one three two one two five seven ninety
seven one three two one two five seven ninety. Uh
can I tell all right real quick the eleven o'clock
Brian Boga seven check your ball mess up at eleven thirty,
(11:25):
the news at noon uh one thirty. Today we'll have
Willie Fritz. Our Cougars are going to play Oregon State
on Friday night in Corbalis seven one three two one
two five seven ninety All right, Bogie at eleven your
phone calls right now, by the way, just to let
you know. The Astros find themselves officially one game back
(11:47):
in the final wild Card. There's no tie breakers, although
again there is a tiebreaker the Astros lose them. But yeah,
wait a second, but go ahead, five and one, because
I'm still team five and one. You were going to
win tonight. You were team four and two, and I
feel I was the team. I mean, I just I
want them to go six and oh I'm team six
(12:09):
and oh. I just don't think it's gonna happen. Okay,
and that's off the table. And I just didn't think
five and one was gonna happen. We'll see, that's still
on the table. I do want to give you one
note if you think it's bad here. I don't know
if the Tigers are on Detroit Sports Radio today Wednesday,
when's the weekly interview with Ajhnch I want to tune
(12:29):
in for that one. Okay, just to my point, and
I put this, we were kind of guessing how long
the biggest lead was. They had a fifteen and a
half game lead Detroit Tigers in the America League Central.
That's awesome. It is all who told you the Tigers
were not going to keep that up? Curly haired, handsome
(12:51):
debonair young man, oh Ben Verlon were witty and charming
and modest. Yes, I've freaking told you the Tigers were
going to keep that pace up. Did you? Did you
say them happen? Did you have them fifteen and a
half hours? No, I didn't know that. I didn't know
it was gonna collapse like this. Yeah, but there were
(13:12):
so many guys over performing in that lineup. They had
Target Bayaz was actually looking good. They had top Tark
School School and they could win that game yesterday. Yeah.
The Guardians keep winning with like I don't know black
magic or I don't know what they're doing smoking mirrors.
They're crazy. Maybe like baseball is flipping out of the
(13:32):
potential thought of the Cleveland Guardians because I don't think
the America can name five Guardians. They have a negative
six run differential. Tigers have a plus seventy and they're
nodded up. You have a negative run differential their first
place with five games left. That's crazy. Yeah, I'm sorry.
(13:55):
Well the Astros are plus thirteen. Well, at least you
got the at least you got the Texas and the
forward to by Way that practice that he should be
just a real fun Actually, no, they got rid of
the cancer. They're Ally's in a good food mat. Okay,
it's gonna be the catalyst for a when on Sunday
NRG or I'll be there as a fan for the
first time, I think for the first time since like
(14:17):
a Chargers Texans game in like oh six. Can I
buy you a T shirt? A sure? Yeah, battle Red
it feels like that's what you gotta do, don't you.
I'm battle Red Ross? Yeah, what's up? I'll let you boy,
I'll be I accept free T shirts. Where's it at?
You bringing it tomorrow? Big City Wings?
Speaker 1 (14:35):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (14:35):
I could We're gonna be Big City Wings tomorrow Atah
twenty thousand block twenty thousand, Yeah, Tuckerton because it's funny
because somebody sent me an email said you are mispronouncing
miss where it is And I'm like, no, I'm not
like twenty three two. Oh my god, I'm like, okay,
twenty thousand block of Timerson two zero three thirty. But
(14:56):
how did we let that happen in our vernacular? That
that we let us saying that way?
Speaker 4 (15:01):
Mmm?
Speaker 2 (15:03):
Twenty three Okay, I'm doing it. I'm confusing myself. Twenty thousand,
three and thirty. This is a little wordy. It is wordy.
The twenty thousand block of Tuckerton in Cyprus. Twenty thousand
block of tucker to them in Cypress, Texas. I'll take
the mousings and some wrens dressing, and you can wrestle
wild hogs in the pocket lot. Wild hogs are riding
(15:23):
in there. Well and pass it. Get down, Dana, Hello,
Will what's up?
Speaker 5 (15:30):
Guys, just got a couple of things if we wanted
to comment, first on the approach, which you guys kind
of touched on or talked about, And then I had
a question. I mean, I think are the whole struggle
as an offense could be summed up in that eighth
inning Altov at bat. That new picture comes in. Hits
Carotini on the first pitch, yes, go throws it outside
the zone, and then al two Ley proceeds to swing
(15:52):
at the next two pitches that are outside in the
dirt before grounding into a double play.
Speaker 2 (15:56):
Now I'm with you.
Speaker 5 (15:57):
I don't know if this is on the coaches, but
but I mean, whatever, whoever is in charge of this
approach for these guys, it's it's horrible. It's it's unwatchable
at this point.
Speaker 6 (16:07):
But you know, I like a spot.
Speaker 5 (16:09):
I don't at the end of the day, I'm not
sure how much a manager or a hitting coach really affects,
you know, major League Baseball players.
Speaker 2 (16:17):
But the main question I had for you guys.
Speaker 5 (16:19):
Is I was looking back on it twenty seventeen, twenty nineteen,
the glory, the glory days. You look at the free
agent signings and the pre arbitration extensions we gave Josh Reddick,
Charlie Morton, Alex Bregman, Michael Brantley, even Robinson Schernos. Those
were all steals. Were those guys were away out playing
their contract. So my question is, looking at this roster
(16:41):
right now, is there one any single player that got
an extension or a big free agent contract that we're
looking at saying that's a steal on this on this
current roster.
Speaker 2 (16:54):
He's hurt all the time, and it's still a steal.
I mean, yeah, he's still making twenty six million dollars
a year. That's a steal. Well, it is, It is
a steal. But attendance is part of the great. Yes,
it hurts that he makes. He misses large chunks of
the season, and the Astros played better when the game
he linked in the lineup. Anybody Astros has no anybody
on a on an extension. Christian Hovey areas and he's
(17:16):
been hurt.
Speaker 7 (17:18):
But I like it.
Speaker 2 (17:19):
I like the Christian was made. What what are you
Christian Walker was a big free agent deal. No, No,
he's saying that we should like, Yeah, we're.
Speaker 5 (17:29):
Saying any free I'm saying any big free agent or
any pre arbitration extension outside of Jordan Alvarez. Is there
anybody on our roster that we've given.
Speaker 2 (17:38):
The current roster? No, but you loved Altuve's early extension
pre arbitration, and you loved Ragman's pre arbitration signing. So yeah, currently,
the only one would be host l two ten years ago.
I have a gut feeling they're gonna get Hunter Brown
done in the off season. They need to, That's all
I got guts And the only ones, the only ones
I would extend right now are parent Pinion Brown. Anyways,
(18:00):
as far as pre arbitration, guys, yeah, Cam Smith didn't
do enough to do any sort of con Cam Smith,
you've got time, yep z that cole three hundred million?
Are you thinking maybe five hundred Well, I already told
I already sent a tweet out earlier this year. Bryce Matthews,
don't don't take any phone calls from uh, you know
who rot roris.
Speaker 8 (18:18):
Well.
Speaker 2 (18:20):
Also, don't have a fifty strikeout rate when you come
up to majors. But anyways, as far okay, this is
the thing with the hitting coaches. Also is that we're
talking about how they're they're it's on the players. That
also doesn't mean they might not be replaced in the offseason. Yeah,
everything's on the table. There is no I could not
come to you and say that the Astros would not
(18:41):
make coaching changes, and I would not come on in
front of this microphone and tell you this was This
is some great travesty. I think if they don't make
the playoffs at all, everything's on the table. It's a
spot included. I agree. I think the training stamp should
be the first thing that should be on the table. Well,
I'm gonna say, uh, I'm just checking the board, Matt.
We get the training staff out at a minus six fifty,
(19:04):
I think there's gonna be some shake ups there for sure.
I would say in my the three things I would
see is I could see a change in the medical staff.
I could see a change in one or both of
the hitting coaches. Tony's Paris Tony, I keep call them
Tony's Parachica, Tony Paris Chica. I think could be moved.
I mean, you've got too many. I feel like more
(19:24):
guys blew through stop signs of his than Gary Pettis
in the last five years. Yeah, they didn't even mean.
I don't I don't even know Tony. He seems like
a great person, but they didn't even like, they didn't
even respect him. And by the way, what is the
point of the third base if you are rounding, second coming, thirdy,
going home. You're probably are in your mind anyway, you
really do nothing, but you still have to have one.
And then I would say that Joe Spotta will be
(19:45):
up for conceiving. Everybody will be evaluated. Absolutely, I would
like a Spota back maybe if you if you think
they need a different voice with hitting coaches, that's fine.
I'm not saying you met you know people, that's fine.
But I know that Joe Aspota loves Alex Sintrunk, carls
Corea does, Josel Tuove does so whether it be Dana
Brown or Jim Crane, evaluating that they're gonna get votes
(20:08):
of confidence from those guys. But if they feel like
a new voice is needed, that's okay, because we say
from one side of the token, yeah, they're not hurting
the astros or are they helping. But sometimes you need
a new set of eyes, absolutely, new set of eyes,
just a fresh voice in the room. Because the clearly
things got stale and stagnant with this offense down the
stretch here. Now, how much of that do you blame
(20:30):
on the hitting coaches? I blame it very little. I
blame it on Josel two A being thirty five years
old and wearing down. Christian Walker looking over the hill,
Jannar Diaz' legs were running down, and then guys have
been hurt, but that doesn't mean anybody is beyond being replaced.
Ten twenty nine. Back on the phones, next Brian bogos
Sevec and thirty on seven ninety ten thirty five on
(20:53):
The Matt Thomas Show with Ross seven one three two
one two five seven ninety seven to one three two
one two five seven nine zero. If you want to
follow us on Twitter, it's at Sports MT, at Sports
RV and at Sports Talk seven ninety Again Brian Bogacivic
to join us in twenty five minutes seven one three
two one two five seven ninety Texans back on the
(21:13):
practice field and as uh, ROSSI you alluded to, maybe
everybody's in a much better mood now that C J.
Garner Johnson. The problem for the Texans in twenty twenty
five is no longer with a team I can watching
criticizing plays. Man, he would be so easy. If if
I was Jalen Petrie and he was smack talking to me,
I'd been like, Bro, You've been on four teams in
(21:34):
the last four years. Shut your ball mass up. That's true.
But he's got a ring and they the Eagles only
lost three games all year long last year, and he
lost three games in three weeks and clearly was fed
up with that man the world.
Speaker 9 (21:50):
You won a super Bowl and they couldn't get rid
of your ass, and they traded you for Kenyon Green,
who didn't even make didn't even make the team.
Speaker 2 (21:56):
That's how That's how bad the deal was both directions.
Eagles got nothing back in return, couldn't keep the guy
because he was bad, and then Texans got rid of
the guy after three weeks after renegotiating his contract. And
I think there's gonna be some dead money issues on this. Yeah, Anthony,
you can release a player for three weeks. There's dead
money problems. Not these are world problems to you and I.
(22:16):
But Nick's got to manage a salary cap and there's
gonna be some money attached to his contract that's gonna
make not great. I don't I'm sad. Why are we
talking about the Texans? I don't want to talk about
the Astros either. I guess all right towards ACL let's
see what can we go to. What's the most pleasant
(22:36):
thing in your life? Right, Well, actually know the answer
to that, but we can't talk about that. What do
you mean? I have a wonderful, lovely life outside of sports.
That's I'm saying. Is there something outside of sports that
would be lovely and pleasant to talk about? I don't
want to talk about the Longhorns. Mine would be. Well,
(22:57):
I mean, my daughter's team won in three three sets yesterday.
See Kings say they must have been playing a bad team.
I'm sorry, you know, what is that rude? You need
to get on here because we were talking about that.
Speaker 3 (23:10):
Joe Ross's rude too.
Speaker 2 (23:13):
What are we talking? We were talking about how the
team's not very good unfortunately, outside of your daughter, who
of course is a star, yes, and an all time great.
They gonna put her in a Ring of honor or something.
I'm hoping retire the jersey. Let's go, let's go the phones.
Uh talk to Jay on seven out of thirty eight high.
Speaker 10 (23:31):
J.
Speaker 11 (23:33):
You know, it's been a good run since twenty seventeen,
been to.
Speaker 12 (23:37):
Three World Series four so uh boy, So.
Speaker 6 (23:43):
You know, I congratulate the Ashvil go on that.
Speaker 11 (23:46):
But these guys here lately, they're ready to go on vacation.
They're tired, and hopefully, Dana Brown, you can build your
team up. Might take a couple of years, but hey,
it's time to get rid of these veterans.
Speaker 2 (24:02):
Like whom I'm curious who What veterans you'd like to
get rid of? Go ahead and run through the list
for me. Your don you want to get You want
to get rid of your don Okay, right, are writing
this down? Ross, Your's got to go get rid of
the greatest master of them all movie. Okay, I TV.
Speaker 11 (24:19):
Uh, Crystal Walker, It's gonna take a while to build
your team up, but hey, dand Brown.
Speaker 10 (24:25):
It's up to you.
Speaker 11 (24:26):
Uh uh hints did it? And that other general manager
we hit, So it might take a while. It might
take a couple of years, but hey, trying to rebuild
your teams.
Speaker 2 (24:39):
Okay, there it is, That's all I got. Just get
rid of everybody now, most of you I can't agree with.
Normally ninety eighty percent of the time. We love Jade,
We just can't agree with him. But it does hurt
that so many players are hurt. You've you do have
(25:00):
money invested in Christian Xavier that has not paid off.
You do have money in Jordan Alvarez. That can't You
can't get dividend back off of that when he's hurt,
you do you spent a lot of money on Lance mccullors,
who has either been hurt or not ineffective. You you
feel bad for the team because of the injuries, but
(25:23):
that also puts people in positions they shouldn't be in
playing five six days a week. I mean, look, Mariso
Dubon is a man's man. He is awesome. He's a
great utility player. Mariso Duban for probably what the second
or third and second of your ross has proven. You
can't play him five to six days a week. You
just can't. And he's had to because you know, Jeremy
(25:43):
Payne has been gone. This is you know, this is
a little stretch here. You know he was on the
disabled injured list earlier this year and again. Injuries do happen.
But when you have high priced players stuck behind the injuries,
and Javier is being paid more than he should be
at this point because they bought an arbitrary years, you
are paying yard On Alvarez more than he would be
paying because it's arbitration years. There is a negative effect
(26:07):
to it. That it does hold you back a little
bit on your financial spending on other players. Would you
let to go get an a lister free agent to
play first base? Well, you can't because you can't afford it,
because you got your B list twenty million dollar a
year guy playing first base, and that has not paid off.
Christian Walker making twenty million dollars a year for the
(26:27):
next two years. As long as he's in Houston, astro
hurts his team, especially if the stroke is gone. How
can you trot him out opening day first base next year?
Because here's the thing. Even if you trade him, you're
paying the contract. So guess what that financially is gonna
go against your books? It goes again, But it doesn't.
(26:50):
It doesn't affect you against a tax though. That's true.
But you also have to find somebody that's gonna be
willing to pay the month. You know, even take Christian
I mean, look, hell, the Diamondbacks might take him back.
You give half the money Christian Walker on a ten
million dollar deal is not bad. You've sent a lot
of cash with it. Anyway, It's look, they still hurts.
(27:11):
I mean, Jim Start got to pay it. It's a
situation that's you're gonna have to You're gonna have to
take care of at some point, at some point or
figure something out. I mean, is he stuck Paray it's
gonna be your first base long term, or do you say, hey,
there's still something left in that bat. He got off
to a bad foot with the guys can't have bad
years and bounce back. It's just harder when they're over
thirty years old. I mean, Paul Goldsmid with what the
(27:34):
Yankees comes to mind, and he was a disaster and
I didn't want him anywhere near the Astros. And well
he's come down to earth a lot. But still he's
played one hundred and forty games for them, and he's
got a OPS at three twenty seven. I'm sorry, sorry,
I'm sorry. Seven forty three, three twenty seven be very bad. Ooh,
(27:56):
injured players that make good money kill you. I'm not
giving you any breaking news or are amazing analysis on that. Yeah,
their top paid player, Kray has just got here, has
been bad quite frankly, and then Christian Walker's been bad.
Josh Hater's hurt. I'm going through this is the literally
the highest played paid players fromber has been bad. For
(28:17):
two months. Last of Colors juniors, as you said, been
bad or not playing. And then jord On Alvarez has
played thirty games for you. And then then it's er,
oh my god, the nice ones. Javier is coming off
Tobby John and he's been up and down. Then he's
Tuk Paratus is next, Oh my god, that actually, and
(28:43):
then it's Paradus who's been out for two months. So
your top ten players are playing in about either well
under their performance career numbers or have spent significant time
on the injured list. That was the top nine paid players.
Next Iss Kartini, he's been good. Yeah, he's a free
agent for six million, and then bond for five million.
That's alarming. Actually, I did not expect this to go
(29:08):
that way. So how much of that is and we'll
go to break on this, how much of that is
poor decisions by the Astros to give Christian Walker three
years sixty million dollars. Walker's looking like a poor decision
because back to back you got burned by First Basement
in decline. I'm gonna tell you this right now. When
you sign your down to the deal, the arbitration deal,
you were happy because you were getting value and actually
going back, if you really want to be honest with
(29:30):
yourselves on this. When Lance mccullor signed his deal to
buy an arbitration US, you said, as long as he's healthy,
and it's funny, we all said that as long as
we said he was healthy, you'd be fair better about
the Colors deal was no, I don't want to say curious.
It was like, oh, that's a gamble. We knew that
when that was signed it was a gamble. And Lance
didn't show much hesitation. He's like, yes, I think I'll
(29:54):
take that guarantee. Mandy, sir, not in the line, give
me the DOCU sign ten forty four? Have you was
losting you signed a real contract? I was funny, that's fine.
I'd docus on everything these days, do you. I don't
normally sign contracts. We had to sign something around here
last month. That's true. Actually, you docus on that and
I get stronger into adendums. But anyways, you're not team
(30:15):
docus on, are you? Ten forty four? It's about Salva
showed Ross seven one three two one two five. Yeah,
it's funny. Docusent has never advantage us. It's always the
other side. Seven one three two one two five seven
ninety seven to one three two one two five seven
ninety damn ten fifty one. Matt and Ross with you here.
(30:43):
Back on the phones in a minute. But we do
have a new feature on the show. It's brought to
you by nobody, but if you like to sponsor, it's
called how does Pro Football Focus judge the Texans offensive line?
Speaker 7 (30:52):
Now?
Speaker 2 (30:52):
Ross moments about a month ago, said Hey, all I'm
looking for is top twenty five And I'm like, you're high?
Is a kite?
Speaker 13 (30:58):
No?
Speaker 10 (30:58):
No?
Speaker 2 (30:59):
You were like, no, that's not that's easy. They're gonna
get up to twenty five easy. Did I really say that? Yes?
I don't think. Yeah, thank you Jonathan for backing me up.
M all right, well maybe I was high as a kite.
I also said later in the season, it's early, Matt,
it's early, baby. So real quick for going back on
the phones, Let's discuss where the Texans are on the
Pro Football Focus offensive line weekly grades. They did this
(31:20):
every Wednesday on their website. Preseason, they were thirty second, yes,
and every week this season they've been thirty second. So
Week three they are thirty second. How about this? They
talk about the rotation between Scruggs and Lake and Tomlinson.
Speaker 14 (31:41):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (31:42):
Tomlinson got a grade of fifty six point five out
of a hundred. That's failing when I used to take classes,
and Scrugs a fifty five point two. So they're both
pretty mad. So what does that rank among the positioned
players in the grades? I'd have to pull it up
as far as guards and save yourself if you if
(32:05):
you want me to, I can. Okay, it's actually not
that bad. Ninety five guards have been raided so far
this year, Okay, Juice s Grugs is fifty seven. Okay,
great job, Juice, You're doing amazing. Hold on, let me
try to find Lincoln Tomlinson. Oh do you talk? Oh r,
(32:30):
I'm gonna talk to Al. How about that? Sorry?
Speaker 10 (32:32):
Al?
Speaker 2 (32:33):
On seven fifty three, Al, good morning do you?
Speaker 12 (32:37):
Good morning to you, sir. This and I just wanted
to make a comment about the astro's medical staff. I
work in the industry that involves private parties and private houses,
and seventy five percent of time, mister Crane is there
along with other Astros investors. The doctor is also there
with him and his wife partying with him. So I
(32:58):
would be surprised that if the training has got rid
of their their main doctor.
Speaker 2 (33:03):
Wait wait, wait wait wait, you have gone to parties
where Jim Crane is working parties.
Speaker 12 (33:12):
Stop gone to parties.
Speaker 2 (33:13):
Working parties, working parties.
Speaker 12 (33:16):
Yes, I work as staff for these private parties.
Speaker 2 (33:19):
Okay. Oh oh you're like a bartender. Yes, oh okay,
see I'm not a little investigating myself. So you're a
bartender and you have seen Jim Crane partying with team doctors.
Speaker 12 (33:31):
With the team doctor yes, okay, well that is and
another another as investors. Okay, well minority owners are investors.
Speaker 15 (33:43):
If you will, Okay, So, but yeah, like I said,
I would just be surprised if because he's always there,
like at least five percent of the time there's a
party or him about he's a doctor, is always there
as well.
Speaker 2 (33:55):
So you're so you're working the you're working the Crane
party circuits. What you're telling me?
Speaker 10 (34:00):
Uh? I kind of.
Speaker 12 (34:02):
I work at a lot of parties and props and stuff.
Speaker 2 (34:05):
Yeah, area, Well, okay, can you sink me in maybe
I get some intel in these doctors. It was going on,
Thank you al for the phone call.
Speaker 12 (34:13):
Like I said, I've been involved with a lot of times,
a lot of times bagels there as well, at least
there as well. Okay, I would be surprised.
Speaker 2 (34:24):
I'm saying, all right, I got you.
Speaker 10 (34:27):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (34:27):
And when we say medical stuff, just to be clear
on this, it's not just Look, there is a huge
corporate sponsorship attached to the group of doctors that are
with the ASTROS. I mean, you can figure out what
that is. I mean you can, you can figure it out.
But when I say medical staff, I'm not talking about
the surgeons, the doctor. I'm talking about the trainers, training staff,
(34:49):
perhaps even strength strength and conditions meetitians. I mean, everybody.
Everybody's going to should be seriously evaluated. They're going to
be under the microsope mike roscope, and you might need
fall guys. Yeah, and you may serve a great gen
and tonic, but doesn't necessarily mean that it's going to
(35:09):
say those guys. You know, gen and Tonic's pretty basic. Man,
about a refreshing mohito, Oh, what's the one? What's the
one that's the glass that's serving like the tin glass
old fashioned moscow mule, Oh, moscow mule, that's copper. Yeah,
that's fine. I knew what you meant. You're close. I
was in one of those metals. You're not a cocktail
guy unless it's a sex on the beach. Hey, that's
(35:31):
a that's a quite a refreshing drink.
Speaker 16 (35:33):
Ryan, good morning to you, Born and fellas speaking of
drinks that they call her in that last segment, I
want to know where he's at because that sounds like
a good time. Trey, Jordan and Altuve get out of here,
like I know they're having down years, but you can't.
Speaker 15 (35:47):
I can't just.
Speaker 16 (35:49):
Yet down here for the entire absolutely, if you want
to do that, it hurts, but it's true. You're not wrong.
Speaker 17 (35:58):
I h.
Speaker 6 (36:00):
On the medical staff.
Speaker 18 (36:02):
Man.
Speaker 16 (36:02):
Medical staff's one thing, but players have to want to
be better. They have to want to train and do
the things they're told. If you're going to fire somebody
on that staff, fire the hitting coaches. They haven't made
any improvements. They're not doing anything different, and they look
like hot garbage swinging it just dog water pitches doing nothing,
not producing anything. The only two base runners that I
(36:25):
can recollect from the game last night that a dumpster
fire of a game was two shots right past center
or right past shortened right or shortened third base and
so Christian Walker and yanner Diez should just thank god
that they even got on base, because those who could
have been two just regular run of the mill plays
(36:48):
and where we're like, oh hey we got hits. That's
horrible batting. The batting coaches need to be fired immediately,
but traded you are not and out They had to
call in and say, what an idiot, I want to
drink with your drinking? What bar are you at?
Speaker 6 (37:01):
I'll come Michi because it sounds like they're over serving everybody.
Speaker 2 (37:04):
Well, I would hope not at ten thirty in the morning.
But Al, we love Al. Al's been calling us for years,
but his takes are Jay whatever, same difference.
Speaker 10 (37:12):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (37:12):
Jay's calls have been sketchy at best. Uh yeah, it
calls me maddie, though I always appreciate it. That is
that is nice. Yeah, pinion yourd honor out of the lineup.
And again we're going to this hitting coaches thing again. Well,
because here's here's whats going to happen. And I know
this is what's gonna happen. They're going to make a
move with the hitting coaches and Noyboney's gonna call him
(37:33):
say Tojo and that's okay, And whoever is the new guy,
I'm gonna say the same thing next year. I'm gonna
say those guys need to be better. Penia's having a
career year. Has anybody given Is it given hitting coaches
full credit for that? Jake Myers had a second good
season offensively. Jake Myers is having a career year. Is
anybody we're giving hitting coaches? Esak Paradis when he was
in the lineup, he's been spectacular. Anybody are we given
(37:56):
hitting coaches? Alvarez the Jordan Alvarez has worked with one
hitting coach staff his entire career. He's one of the
win healthy, one of the five most dangerous hitters on
the planet. Are are we giving hitting coaches credit there?
Speaker 10 (38:09):
Or no?
Speaker 2 (38:09):
I'm just asking. I just want some consistency. If they're
getting the ball, you're not. They're getting the blame for
bad hitters. I want them to get credit for the
good hitters. That's all I'm saying. If they can't, If
they if they're telling Christian Walker to swing under every
single high four seamer on the planet, yes they need
to be replaced. If they're telling Yaner Diaz to swing
(38:30):
at everything, that comes anywhere within five feet of the
strike zone. Yes, they need to be replaced. If they're
telling Cam Smith to run out of gas after gang
Busters started the season, yes they needed they're they're failing.
Just be ready for chance. You're just going to be changes.
(38:50):
And like I said, again, that's okay if they want
a different voice. And there's going to be check telling
you what's gonna happen. If this same lineup is tried
out in twenty twenty six and this team still struggles offensively, Yeah,
what are you gonna do? Who canna blame? Now? If
you're running out steady doses of Hazus Sanchez, Mariso Dubon
and Cooper Hummel or whoever else with haes Sanchez, I
(39:11):
want to know him. No, I don't know what's going
on with that Haezesus Sanchez. We can actually look at
I mean, hey, the hitting coach is telling him to
get five hits in his first game as an astro
and then and not or whatever it was one of
his first game, was it his first game or one
of his first games? Five hits in his first game
as an astro and basically have about five hits since then,
(39:31):
Brian Bogus, the new hitting coach the Astros joins us. Next,
Oh Ross is here to tell you about Center Genics.
First and foremost, though, is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
All Right, let's spend ten minutes with Brian Bogus. Sevic, Brian,
(39:55):
I'm gonna be brutally honest with you. I did not
watch the pre or postgame shows last night. Were you
on them?
Speaker 15 (40:02):
I was not?
Speaker 2 (40:03):
Okay, I don't feel nearly as bad. Then maybe that's it.
Maybe a game. What is your winning win loss record
when you're doing the pre and post game shows? Because
at this point three singles ain't gonna cut it in
Northern California.
Speaker 7 (40:16):
Yeah, I think we're at the point to where we
just start searching for anything. If it's me working late,
I guess I have to do my part. But if
that might be as good of an answer as anything.
Speaker 2 (40:27):
Yeah, just really exasperated is in the term, because look,
this has been a team that has really struggled offensively
for much of the season, much of the because of
the inconstant seas in the lineup. But how do you balance?
Don't change who you are, be the same type of
player you are but at the same time, Bogie, you're
(40:48):
down to a week, you're trying to hold on to
some sort of postseason aspirations, and you mustared not much
of an offense yesterday against a very mid Oakland lineup.
Speaker 7 (40:59):
Yeah, it's it's kind of been the story of the
second half, or second two thirds or whatever it comes
out to be. Is just I mean, the offense looking
not it's the least dangerous that the offense is felt
in some time. And you know, we've seen very short
(41:20):
spurts where it looks like they're putting it together, but
on the whole, it just seems like opposing pitchers regardless
of who we're facing, you know, in the division, out
of the division, it just seems like the league had
generally accepted a plan where, you know, they know how
they want to go out and attack this lineup, and
there aren't, you know, adjustments being made, and it's just,
(41:43):
you know, it's you're getting beat by what looks like
an inferior matchup on paper.
Speaker 2 (41:50):
So let me ask you this, this is a tough one.
Is there any defeatist mode up and down that lineup?
Is that this season wasn't meant to be? I mean,
you still largely control your own destiny. I know you're
now down a game in the wald card, but has
that started to sink in a little bit? Can you
see it? Or is that is it still for you
and I and Ross here, we're eighteen or miles away
(42:12):
from that team. We can't make that kind of decision
our assessment.
Speaker 10 (42:15):
Yeah, No, I don't think so.
Speaker 7 (42:18):
I mean, I think you've got You've got guys in
the clubhouse who know as long as as long as
they're mathematically still in it, that they have a chance
and nobody's gonna, you know, go and kind of you know,
give up before it's over. But I also think that
they they you know, you have to have a little
bit of realist in you and realize just you know,
for an extended period of time, it's been a struggle.
(42:39):
Certainly offensively, there's been forget what the number I saw
the other day, it's like one hundred and forty eight
or one hundred and forty nine different lineup combination. So
that just speaks to how many guys have been in
and out of the lineup, whether it be injury or
performance wise. So yeah, it's definitely probably set in that,
you know, This is not nothing's going to click and
(43:01):
all of a sudden we're going to be an offensive juggernaut.
I think everybody certainly realizes that. But you also have
enough guys in that lineup who you know we're looking
at looking at what is now a five day season.
There you can get a couple guys hot in five
days and then they can carry a lineup and you
can score enough rents to get yourself in. It's certainly
not out of the realm with possibility.
Speaker 2 (43:23):
Brian bogasvik with us here on seven to ninety and
hopefully this is not our last appearance of the season.
But Bogey, we're going to look at a macro view
of this team and Christian Walker. Obviously a lot of
folks were excited about the replacement at first base. This
team has been looking for that solid offensive production, maybe
since the last few years of Yearly Guriel. Obviously the
(43:44):
jose A Braid situation did that workout. He never was
going to be a two eity five hitter here, But
it just feels like there have been two or three
games where're like, oh, he's going to turn the corner
and then it's a one for eleven or it's a
two for nineteen when you look at a macro stance
of him. What went wrong for Christian Walker this season?
Speaker 7 (44:05):
Well, I think, first and foremost, he got into a
situation you know when you're when you're a hitter and
you start off slow, you're always kind of doing the
math in your head of Okay, you know, I started
off and I'm hitting two hundred after fifty at bats,
so I need to do whatever over my next hundred
and fifty to get it leveled out. And he got
to a point to where he was so far underwater
it was never going to get back to where he
(44:27):
wanted it to be or where he expected it to be.
And that can be a really frustrating thing because you
know you're sitting all of a sudden, you know, three
hundred at bats in, four hundred bats in, you've got
a lot of season left, and it's already kind of
feel like, all right, this is this is a season
that's a failure, and it's just never gotten to the
point to where it looks like he's been comfortable with himself.
(44:48):
You know, there's been times when the bats have gotten
more consistent and you think, all right, this is the
guy that we expected to see and then it goes away.
I think a lot of you know, the biggest thing,
from a whatever mechanical standpoint or whatever, it is just
the inconsistency the hitting fastballs and especially elevated fastballs, and
(45:08):
it seems like a hole that got exposed and never
got closed up. So I think that's probably the one
thing that you can look tough and say, hey, that's
that's what needs to be fixed moving forward. But I
think just from a seasonal standpoint, it just felt like
it got so far away from him early that just
from a mental standpoint, it felt like almost say a
lost season before the season was over.
Speaker 2 (45:29):
Hey, you mentioned the high fastballs, and I mean, it
feels like anybody who is watching these games Christian Walker
has to know what The hitting coaches know it, everybody
knows it. What and you mentioned like, so what what
can be done?
Speaker 1 (45:40):
Is that?
Speaker 2 (45:41):
How can that get fixed?
Speaker 12 (45:43):
Well?
Speaker 10 (45:44):
You can.
Speaker 7 (45:44):
You can look at it two different ways. You can
look at it from a mechanical standpoint, right find find
what's causing extra length in your swing or a drop
off in bat speed. Are are you muscling up swinging
too hard? Are you getting long in the back? And
you're not getting the barrel out front and try to
close it up and then be able to attack that pitch,
or you can look at it from an approach standpoint
and say, you know, if I can't hit it, I
(46:05):
got to lay off of it, and then you just
try to make that an area that you're not going
to go after pitches until you have to with two strikes.
But that also changes the fact that you have to
then be more aggressive and overly aggressive two pitches further
down in the zone or off speed pitches in the
middle of the zone earlier in you're at bats, so
(46:26):
you can try to attack it one or the other
or a combination of both. But you know, if you
can't hit it, you got to not swing at it.
Speaker 2 (46:33):
And you mentioned now, Brian Bukasiakle this here on Sports
Talk seven ninety you mentioned just seeming a lack of
offensive adjustments because you're right the walker for Seamer, we're
seeing Janner Diaz still swinging at everything out of the zone,
same thing for jose Al Twovey. I mean, what can
be done, especially there's been a lot of talk and
we've been talking about it, basically add nausey in the
last couple of weeks, Brian about the hitting coaches and
(46:56):
the offense has been bad and Alex Tron and Troyce
Nicker the offensive have been successful with him there. But
is it a situation where these guys are are not
making the proper adjustments for the lineup.
Speaker 7 (47:13):
I don't think though. I mean, hitting coaches are very
involved in game planning, but you know, game planning has
to do yes with the pitchers that you're facing and
how you want to, you know, combat what they're throwing
at you. But you also have to make a game
plan that's tailored to hitters that you have. And the
fact of the matter is is that they have a
disproportionate amount of very aggressive hitters. And if you're going
(47:35):
to ask those guys to go up there and try
to be something that they're not, you're not doing anybody
any favors. And you know, you use Altuve as an example.
He's always been an overly aggressive hitter. He's always swung
a pitches out of his zone at times. But when
you have him being bracketed in a lineup by Alex
Bregman and Michael Brantley, you can live with that and
(47:56):
it doesn't show up as well. But when you have
a lineup that as you go first, they're down. There's
a lot of aggressive hitters. Jimmy Paine is a very
aggressive hitter. Yan Or Diaz is a very aggressive hitter.
And then you get down to the bottom of the order,
and now you're talking about young guys that are just
trying to survive or just find their footing. You can't
ask them to be the ones that go out there
and just drag out at bats and fight pittures down
(48:17):
to two strikes. So it just seems like there's a
little bit of an imbalance in terms of style of hitter,
and that's something that you know, you can't really work
around what you don't have.
Speaker 2 (48:30):
Last question, Bogie, if you are Joe Espada and you
are down to five games left for this season, and
part of what a clubhouse has to be is it
has to be even keeled for one sixty two. But
clearly this has been a different kind of clubhouse the
last couple of months because there's so many guys going
in and out of there. How does he treat the
pregame rituals, the film study, the pregame visits, the talk
(48:56):
to the guys at the hotel during the week thing,
knowing that if you you can put something together here
against two subpar teams, you got a better than fifty
to fifty chance of making the playoffs.
Speaker 12 (49:07):
Yeah, I think.
Speaker 7 (49:08):
I think from a pre game, before the game routine stuff,
everything is generally the same. Everybody knows what that's fake,
everybody knows where you're at in the season. I think
where it does change is in game. There's no longer
long leashes for anything. There's no longer you know, feelings
(49:29):
to be accounted for when you're making moves. If a
guy looks like he doesn't have it coming out of
the bullpen, you get somebody going immediately and it's going
to be three batters and the next guy's coming in.
So I think in terms of getting ready for the game,
you know, you trust that you have guys who know
how to get ready. You have guys who've gone deep
into the posting, and you have guys who know what
it takes to win. They'll be able to get themselves ready.
(49:50):
But when it comes to managing the game, that's where
it's different, and that's where more of a sense of
urgency and maybe a little bit of risk taking is
going to come and.
Speaker 2 (50:00):
To play hopefully, my friend we are visiting next Wednesday.
Thank you for the time as always, all right, I
hope so yes, Thanks Brian Bogasvic And he's with us
from our good friends at Space City Helme Network not
working this series. We need him for Anaheim, ROSSI, because
those games are gonna matter. Every game matters. I'm gonna
speak it into existing. Five months wins in a row, Matthew,
(50:22):
you tell me nope, Oh it's very easy you. I
think there must. I want one hundred percent believe there
must wins in hope? Or is it three? Three? In shame? Ross?
What are we doing?
Speaker 17 (50:36):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (50:36):
Maybe it's two four? kN Coon. Did you see his
tweet yesterday, Jonathan. I was surprised actually looking at it.
It was a joke. You know, you never see one,
two three? Oklahoma City? No, nobody goes there. You never
see one. Does anybody actually want to be in Oklahoma City?
I got a single person, Okay, can I give you
(50:58):
a really quick I got five seconds. It's a place
to raise your family if you're from Oklahoma. It's the
biggest city in the state, it's biggest city in tar nation.
I tell you there isn't a lot to do, But
most cities don't have a lot of things to do. Okay,
all right, like Team OKC Matt, No, No, I'm just
mad loves Oklahoma City. Like, for instance, here you go
(51:23):
to bars and restaurants, and you go to the movie theater,
you go to Buffalo Bayou Park, you can go to
the wonderful world renowned museums. You go to the Menil
Collection as well, and the city has all gets to me,
you can get. None of their museums are as good
as Houston's. Come on, you're probably right about that. But
my point is we talk about this all the time
when we're traveling, is that most cities, the general average
(51:44):
person does about the same ten or twelve things. I
haven't gone to the Children's Museum since my kids were
children because they don't want to go anymore. But yeah,
you're and plus you have to stay five hundred yards away.
You're mean to me, just kidding, I'm sorry. Let me
give buy coffee. I'm tired.
Speaker 4 (52:05):
I was on it.
Speaker 2 (52:06):
I was on air till one. I'm gonna be cranky
if you were on till one twenty in the morning.
Next Yune I'm blaming your Coffee'm blaming your crankiness. On
the Late Night Love at twenty three, it is matten
Ross with you on untill two o'clock. We'll have the
news at noon. We will have Willie Fritz at one thirty.
His squad's going up to Oregon State to play the
(52:27):
beavers on Friday night. Wow, they're going up They're going
up state to slay those beavers. Now, everybody can slay
a beaver. No, well, we'll see if the cougar's cooking out.
We cannot lose that game. I don't care if we
went by one point. I don't care. I'm going to
lose going up to Oregon for some cougars and some beavers. Yeah,
beautiful part of the country, you know that. Oh gorgeous,
(52:50):
it is beautiful. I'm gonna weirdos though, Oh my god,
they're weird up there. Oh most beautiful. Oh man, I
was so. I flew into Eugene because it was cheaper
than Portland. Eugene is Austin, the hippies of Austin on steroids,
but like tweaked out and they're just weird. They just
sit there like no. I went to a bar I
(53:12):
went to a bar because there was so I was
just looking for live music. And yes, it was like,
I don't know, I can't even ask you to see
I can't ask you for a movie. You've never saw
Sean of the Dead, I imagine. Correct, Okay, uh, well
that's a zombie movie. But it's a zombie comedy. And
part of the joke is, you know, we're all zombies
walking through our lives. The people are. That's that's what
the people of Eugene were like, they're all on something.
(53:35):
He's not exactly I've been. It was like you were
in a zombie times. Yeah, I've never been to Eugene.
So so I'll say about this. You know, there are
various things in life that tug at your heartstrings. Homelessness
tugs in my heart strings. I feel generally bad. The
problem with Portland is there there are so many of
(53:56):
them and they are boy, they they come after you
that it's very dangerous. And I don't know why I'm
bringing something. It's just it's there. It's just such a
different world up there that the I mean the there,
and my guess is mental illness is is a huge part. Yes,
I mean the closing defunding of state hospitals. But it
does scare you. It does, and I'm just being honest,
(54:18):
it does. And also and those those are very high,
like cost of living places and yeah, I think it
was La Times or somebody did a lot of studies
and it's like, oh, are these people all have mental health?
And they interviewed a lot of homeless people and they're like, no,
I just can't afford rint anymore. Yeah, it's bad. Yeah,
it's just it's it's so beautiful, but it's it's it's
been overrun by, unfortunately, homelessness, which is a terrible problem
(54:40):
we all have, but it does affect And the NBA
has not had All Star games there. It's a huge
NBA city. They that they just don't Terrence Jones knows.
Terrence Jones knows. I'm sorry you didn't have to go there.
You did go there though. Let's go to Gary in
(55:00):
spring at eleven twenty five Gary.
Speaker 19 (55:02):
Good morning, Oh guys, good morning. That's a great interview
with the Bobie there. He's he's always liked listening to them.
He's so knowledgeable and he's right there with both sides,
with the management and the players, so he's always liked
listening to him. Hey, three things real quick. One of
them is on the Texans releasing that defensive back they
(55:24):
did yesterday.
Speaker 13 (55:25):
I like to compare it to a medical firm or
the way they consider things. Once you discover a cancer,
the quicker you get that cancer removed, the quicker you will,
you will heal and get back to normal. And that's
the way I look at it there on the Astros,
Bogie kind of said what I was thinking. The batting
(55:47):
coach can only do so much. The medical staff can
only do so much. Of course, they can slip up more,
I believe, than the batting coach. But I think it's
eighty ninety on the players to perform, not the batting coach,
because they've been doing this. The player has been doing
this for a lot of years over and over, so
(56:08):
you're not going to really change the way they do anything.
So it's more on them than the than the batting
instructure of the batting instructor. Uh And last thing on
your bump back music, I'm with you on the Astros.
I think it's almost it's real close to uh uh uh.
I must win the next five games, so I don't
know if today you can do it, but tomorrow you
(56:28):
might want to use that bump back music. That Paul
Simon song slip sliding Away, that might be one you
want to use. Use the intro with there. So anyway,
great show, guys. I appreciate you taking my call.
Speaker 2 (56:40):
You got we actually used slipsodding away last week? Did
we not?
Speaker 10 (56:43):
We did?
Speaker 2 (56:45):
Mm hmm. I'm still groggy from that one. That's a
jam me. It's not it's not. It's not James a
strong turn. You keep using that word and I don't
think it means what you think it means. At the
bottom five A man, Wait a minute, he was like,
what was it today? Don't let me down? Yeah, you
(57:07):
know it's classics. That's a Beatles. You could not just no,
there there'll be no Beatles hate on this right now.
Program fifty six or something that was six. You know
that was one of their last songs. Every uh. Yeah,
I'm a Paul Simon fan. I am now granted you
and I went to that concert. We largely regretted it.
We didn't pay those that made me feel better. That's true.
(57:30):
I always say you have the funniest thing you say
about that is that ons Garfugg was doing right now,
not nearly as much as Paul is do they call
him garth for funky. I don't think they call me
the one. They call him broke. Okay, they call him
janitor like for instance, there have been some groups, uh
like Loggins and Messina, I mean Messina left and but
(57:50):
Loggins was John Oates. Yeah, John Oates was. So John
Oates had the mustache. Yeah, I've had him flip this
whole time. Yeah, Darryl Hall is the lead singer. Daryl
Hall is the one that's the blonde and John okay,
I didn't realize that. And John Oats had the food
man shoot kind of and John Oates slept with a
thousand people. He said, see that feels low, Will Chamber.
Let's say get your weight up, son, all right, so
(58:11):
let's put it in perspective really fast in the web
second here, So John Oates is a star of a
band that's very popular for what about fifteen years? Would
you say, seventy three to eighty eight ridiculously popular? Sure
went up. Okay, so that's fifteen years. That's three hundred
and sixty five days a year. Get the calculator out,
(58:32):
are we calculating his or just that's easy. Fifty four
hundred days. That's one girl a week, could you because
could she sleep with a thousand people in fifteen years?
And mostly it feels like that's still a large number.
When you're touring on the road, you're pulling two three
(58:53):
at night, you know you're doing five six shows a week.
You're saying that the guys that John Oates had had
the to do it a year the day you're saying
he doesn't. No, I'm saying, I'm saying in nineteen seventy three, no,
internet can't get trace back. No, that's fair. Also seventies
(59:17):
pre aids just saying, was it really so? If he
had if he had sex ten times a week, fifty
two weeks, it's five hundred and twenty times a Yeah,
he's got to do that for two years? All right,
Maybe he did get it easyps. He did say a thousand.
He din't low he didn't low energy. Huh he needs
to go to Yeah, TRT, I know where he needs
(59:39):
to go right now. RT MVP. Baby, you want to
be like John Oates, You get your you want to
be sewing your oats, you got your get your libido, back,
She's gone not for long, and I go no one's
coming back. Yeah, and you're gonna say you a rich girl,
all right, TRT MVP dot com. I'm done, TRT Oh,
I'm not in. Thanks break no God, finish your spot
(01:00:03):
let again. Let me get Let me get damp it ha,
let me get tampa tear. Let me get damp get
again here, let me get tack here.
Speaker 3 (01:00:13):
Let me get damp it alright, eleven thirty seven on
seven out of.
Speaker 2 (01:00:19):
This is our favorite half hour of the week where
you get to come in and tell some people how
you really feel about them. If you want to call
in and you are tired of batting coach, UH hate
seven one three five seven, don't you tell me shut
their bomb masses up up man. Put a moratorium on
(01:00:41):
the word batting coaches like a mute on the Twitter account.
If some at your office UH has given you the
rundown of why his back is hurting and what kind
of pain medication is used or what kind of he's
not sharing creams and uh you are trying to get
your microwave lunch fixed in and put on the microwave
(01:01:02):
and get it back to your work so you can
get your hard work job done. Tell me anybody got
time for that endless babble We don't need on this show.
Endlet's babble, we don't need life. Mm hmm. I'm trying
to think what has happened this week that has been good?
Speaker 1 (01:01:18):
Good?
Speaker 2 (01:01:19):
No, that's what I'm saying. I was citch wiser in Lifer. Yeah,
I mean I don't know what what do we got?
Speaker 1 (01:01:25):
You mad?
Speaker 2 (01:01:26):
Somebody?
Speaker 10 (01:01:27):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (01:01:27):
Yes, I am, Please, I'm mad to several callers who've
been getting lately. I don't want the Astros to make
the playoffs because they're just gonna get swipped we we
we we ween. By the way, isn't the NBA you're
not entering the lottery go ahead? There's a seven ninety
host that believes that too. Well to that certain seven
(01:01:48):
ninety host and you people, I don't want to want
to They're not gonna go far the playoffs. Think you
guy's lighting in a bottle. It's not likely, but it
could happen. Maybe Frobert turns it around. Maybe Hunna Brown's awesome.
Speaker 3 (01:02:00):
Maybe Jordan comes back from a bum ankle and they
cruise to the World Series.
Speaker 2 (01:02:04):
But you don't have a shot.
Speaker 3 (01:02:06):
If you don't make the playoffs, stop being defeatist.
Speaker 2 (01:02:09):
Stop being scared.
Speaker 3 (01:02:10):
This is not the NBA where you get a lottery
pick if you don't make the playoffs. Shut outbom ass
up shit, obum ass up man too, Dark Breast Airlines
who continues to infiltrate all of my social media's and
my TV shows with.
Speaker 9 (01:02:24):
Hey, everybody got great news. You're knocking the assigned seats.
You're not doing another kindness of your heart. You're doing
it because you're trying to raise some money.
Speaker 2 (01:02:31):
So Dark Breast shut your bomb ass up mate. Oh
man man switched to because you know, for years and
years and years you check the Southwest Fair. That's the fair.
Speaker 1 (01:02:40):
That's it.
Speaker 2 (01:02:41):
Now it's the Basic Fair showing Wow, flights are pretty
cheap right now. I like, man, I got, I got.
I don't even understand what the Basic Fair is. The
basic fairs like Basic Economy and other airflight airlines. Now
you can't choose your seat, you don't get bags, all
that type of stuff. You don't get as much leeway
with cancelation fees or refunds or anything like that. Yeah,
an upgrade. Yeah, so this is a signing seats is
(01:03:03):
not a celebratory commercial. So I was like, man, this
flights look pretty cheap. And then I was like, oh,
it's the basic fair all right, I got another one
for you. I just gutside of that stuff. West, I
mean dark Southwest, you suck used to have them used
because you are always team Southwest. It was I'm usually
I'm usually teammates. I'm team Schminy because it's closer to
(01:03:24):
my house. I got a team be team Rear It
now no good. They're they're cutting employees left and right.
I thought they're a folding right or is that a
run tier? They're bankrupt? That's run tier. Gas up the
plane gas, here's here's you got to donate five dollars
gas money to get off the tarmac. How about this
(01:03:47):
one Schminer Airlines. Last Wednesday, I'm in Newark. My flight
was several hours late because the weather, I mean, stuff happened.
It happens. Why were the two flights from Newark to
Houston leaving Newark before I got to leave? The two
flights that followed mine got to Houston faster than mine
on a three hour delay. And I'm gonna got time
(01:04:08):
for that. I'm just saying you know what you gotta do. Then,
if you're gonna make me wait all that time and
give us at least a free cocktail, one of those
free boxes on a plane, or maybe some free internet
something something. I got nothing and then they want me
to fill out a survey. Was there somebody on the
flight that did you well? No, no, you got over there. Yeah,
(01:04:31):
that's true. We take it for granted.
Speaker 7 (01:04:33):
Matt.
Speaker 2 (01:04:33):
You took a flying tube from one part of the
country the other and got home safe. That's pretty crazy.
That is pretty cool. I thank the pilots every time
I do, I say thank you for thank you for service.
Yeah all right, Jonathan, anything for you? Anything bothering you
this week? You know a thing that's bothered me is
I was. I don't know if you know the rapper
NBA and boy of course a young boy. Oh they played.
Did you get the tickets from this weekend? Did you go?
Speaker 20 (01:04:55):
No?
Speaker 2 (01:04:55):
No, no, of course not. Look are they were giving
some out over here. But there's nothing to take you girl.
Ain't let him do stuff? So sorry.
Speaker 21 (01:05:05):
I wouldn't go to this concert is because in Kansas
City they end up beating up the sixty year old
security do up stage picked him up and threw them
on the the concert stairs, and this fourteen year old
kids started molly whopping him. He has a whole go
fund me and.
Speaker 2 (01:05:22):
Stuff like that. He's got to go fund me. The
kid does the video is very sad.
Speaker 21 (01:05:28):
He's the guys, but what but they have no security
and all these people go to these type of concerts.
It's like the new age eighties rock, like this is
going rampage stuff. Anybody got time for that? Hey, nobody
destroying the city, making us look back?
Speaker 2 (01:05:40):
What the heck? And everybody's got phones out? What are
you doing? You see? It's very It's a sad video.
And then why did you make me watch this?
Speaker 21 (01:05:47):
I didn't nobody's nobody's even pulling them off of them exactly.
He got like, just beat up, just harassed.
Speaker 2 (01:05:54):
Okay, this guy at the end, bro beats him up.
I mean I pulls him off, all right.
Speaker 21 (01:06:00):
He was like Matt No, And like, if Matt was
there working scary and guys, but you got kids.
Speaker 2 (01:06:04):
I would say the world's going to hell, But I
think we're already there. So Victor, what's the matter with you?
Speaker 10 (01:06:10):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (01:06:11):
Uh?
Speaker 10 (01:06:11):
This is for the uh social media of the astro.
Speaker 7 (01:06:16):
Oh I saw this boasting light after.
Speaker 10 (01:06:21):
The losing that game, boasting about playoff tickets.
Speaker 7 (01:06:26):
Shut your bum ass up.
Speaker 2 (01:06:28):
Yeah, I saw that. Man, the Astros said that wild
Card and Division Series tickets are now on sale. I
was like, I mean that was a Time's tweet. You
gotta send that. I mean you gotta.
Speaker 13 (01:06:38):
I know you got to.
Speaker 2 (01:06:40):
But you don't want to look at the replies because
they are exactly what I thought they were going to be. Uh,
that's pretty funny. And yeah, I'm trying to find out
the time stamp on that. What time was it? I
came this morning.
Speaker 4 (01:06:55):
They did it.
Speaker 2 (01:06:58):
Two thirty seven pm. S okay, so they get the
benefit of dad a little bit. But man, the reply,
the offs, yeah not good. All right, back on the phones.
Next seven one three two one two five seven, Auntie,
if something is bothering you, come on in and tell
some people to shut their bumb asses up. Seven one
(01:07:18):
three two one two five seven NINTI. All right, eleven
fifty one. You got a last call in for those
of you don't want to tell somebody to shut their
bumb asses up. Seven one three two one two five
seven NINTI seven one three two one two five SEVENANTI
I'm gonna do one for uh Damiko Ryans. He told CJ.
(01:07:39):
Garner Johnson yesterday to shut his bomb mass up shit,
so bum ass up man. He also said, ain't nobody
got time forbody got time for your weak ass work.
Nobody got time for exactly Here's do you think CJ's like, man,
I had to get out of there, No good for me. No,
I think he's got a screw loose. I think he does.
(01:08:01):
I think he absolutely is a screw loose. I mean,
why would you mean? I guess teams are going to
be desperate to find help in the secondary. He'll find
work somewhere because he's still he still got to I mean,
he's still a decent enough player. But he got beat
up a couple of times. He threw other people under
the bus and pocket watched him too. How do you
(01:08:22):
pocket watch when you've been here seven weeks? And how
much of that was like banter and like, I mean
that stuff leaked out with the quickness. Yeah, Texans. Texans
brass was on it, leaking that to every reporter they
could find once he was released. Yeah, it is funny.
They will keep things very close to the best until
they want a narrative. It's gonna fit help them justify
(01:08:42):
their reasons, like how that Bill O'Brien stuff came out
after he got fired. Mm hmm, Yeah, it is interesting. Uh,
it's hey, we're not going to tell you what's like.
For instance, we will find out the real story about
Joe Mixon eventually, we're just going to Yeah. I think
it's Gang Green. That's the reason why he's han't played
all years because Gang Green. Yeah, you can get that.
(01:09:04):
Or maybe he got frostbite. Did he try to climb
Mount Everest in the off season? What is he doing
texans Edom although Woody Marx climbing up the ranks of
what what do you mean? Let's get more and more snaps? Okay,
I want you to explain to me what he ran
ranks he's climbing up of. How many snaps did he
get last week, Maddie, he got. He got more than
he did in the previous two weeks. I'll give you
(01:09:26):
that exactly. He got thirty thirty three for Chubb, thirty
for Woody Marx, zero for Dary Oglunba wallet and zero
for Damian Pierce, who was a healthy scratch again. Right,
Woody Mark season. Baby, he's on my bitch ready to blow.
By the way, did I not tell you there would
not be a single rush running back that would grave
Graham five and five hundred yards this year? I think
(01:09:48):
it might have said seven fifty. Oh, okay, that's gonna happen,
that's gonna catch well, Joe Mixon, we hardly knew, ye,
Woody Mark season is upon us. Let's go, baby, let's
go to win. You say it again, guaranteed Texans win Sunday?
Put your name on it. Nope? Yeah, yeah, sure, why not?
(01:10:10):
Who cares? Yeah? I was gonna say it. I can
make a difference on Ethan. What's the matter with you? Yeah?
Speaker 8 (01:10:17):
This is for Nick Kaylee, Demico, Ryans, Nick Cassario, whoever
makes the decisions in the front office in on the
field for the Texans. Uh Ain't nobody got time for
you to draft two wide receivers in the first three
rounds of the twenty twenty five NFL Draft, just for
them to get less snaps than Xavier Hutchinson. Uh Ain't
(01:10:41):
nobody got time for that.
Speaker 2 (01:10:43):
Ain't nobody got today? I'm getting this sense, and I
listened to our station all day long, we have got
some ridiculously grumpy Texans fans a happy Texans fans, I mean,
because again, look, oh and three is not advantageous for
a playoff run. It has happened before, fourteen point eight percent.
(01:11:03):
It is the AFC South again. The Colts are three
and oher. But one was against Tennessee, who's awful. One
was a game that you won because Denver what do
they call not a launch but they had a leverage
penalty called against them. Yes, and then you beat up
on Miami who may be looking for a new coach
in three weeks. But the storyline has been same old Texans,
(01:11:29):
and you never want to be that in sports. Yeah,
when you hear same old blank, same old blank, go,
it's like it's the worst, like built for this is
a cool thing to say on the come or ready
to go gut root root root root, let's get her
(01:11:50):
done yet? Like you if you hear same old something
that like, for instance, the Wizards in the NBA have
been the same old Wizards for twenty years. Yeah, if
I go to Jonathan, I says same old Matt, that's
not probably not a compliment. If you go to Jonathan
and say same old Ross. It's probably not a compliment.
You want to be same old anything like Florida State
(01:12:10):
last year, two and ten. We can't be same old
then then you know they didn't do that. They just
paid out players. Now they're number nine in the country. Yeah,
I said the same old Seminoles, I say, same old
Aggie's Oh my god, oh lord, I'm just saying, or
long Horns or whatever, but you're not the same old
long Horns you played for. You were in the national
semifinals last year. And when you know, that's a good point.
Speaker 21 (01:12:31):
You could be the same old Houston Cougars and it's
like a good thing because they go upon a four,
but it's like the same old they lose every time. Yeah,
if I say same old, that's kind of crazy that
I say same old Kelvin Sampson's Cougars, that's probably not
a good thing.
Speaker 2 (01:12:42):
It's like a good thing. It's like bitter, you know,
like he's that's bitter, more bitter than sweet. See Jonathan
Allen brought that up, not me. I was, you know,
I was branzoning Joe boa Is up. Matt said, I
always get this wrong. Is it Nigel or Nigel for this?
One's Nigel. Nigel. I don't know which Nigel, but this
(01:13:03):
one's Nigel from Vancouverel Vancouver, eh.
Speaker 4 (01:13:07):
And Vancouver exactly. I thought we cleared this up sometimes ago.
Speaker 2 (01:13:10):
I'm a I'm a failure as a communicator. Sorry, Sprain
is rotten, Nigel, I got you.
Speaker 4 (01:13:16):
And And if you think Oregon is full of weird those,
you should have a couple a few hours north. You'll
get a real taste of of weird.
Speaker 14 (01:13:25):
I got.
Speaker 4 (01:13:26):
I've recently invested several hundred dollars in a bunch of
Texans swags, some beautiful corduroy hats, t shirts, et cetera.
But unfortunately I can't wear it to my local bar
or out in public. In fact, I've taken in the
last couple of weeks to wearing a New York Giants hat.
Ain't nobody got time for that. Texans are a huge,
(01:13:52):
in huge trouble that they let Laramie tonsl walk without
having a plant to upgrade at that position. As much
as I agreed with with Tons leaving, the team is
in big trouble. And this Gardner Johnson cut better work.
People need to shut their bumb ass up. I certainly
hope they win on Sunday.
Speaker 2 (01:14:12):
Have a good show, Gap, Thank you very much.
Speaker 7 (01:14:15):
Man.
Speaker 2 (01:14:15):
You haven't I said it in the off season. How's
that Texan culture gonna matter when Josh heinz Allen is
out there? How's that Texans culture gonna matter when Jared
versus out there and your left tackles on an island.
By the way, the Los Angeles Rams are your first opponent.
We got the They smelled the breath of every one
of those linemen. Oh c j did Gardner? No, Stroud? Stroud. Yeah,
(01:14:40):
we're talking about offensive line. You're talking about that culture
and breath. He would he got sacked so much and
hits the much so he could smell their breath. You
know what I meant. Okay, it was a funny video
on Twitter. Did you see it was Miles Garrett like,
uh made an inside move on the whoever the left
tackle was the Packers and the tackle turns around and
(01:15:03):
goes Jordan run.
Speaker 1 (01:15:11):
I got destroyed.
Speaker 2 (01:15:13):
I love a goud get down, Jordan. I'll scare it.
Greatest pass rusher number one, Mike Parsons, number two, Will
Anderson trying to get up there. Daniel Hunter two, I'm
team Will Anderson. By the way, Will Anderson, very good,
very good. Gonna be wasted, another wasted career. J. J.
Watt Style JJ Watt Deshaun Watson. Next photo C J. Stroud,
(01:15:37):
Will Anderson, tell me about you are lying because Watson
had a great year. Once again Ross being rude. That's fine. Truthful?
Once again, Ross being truthful. That's true. No calling is
(01:15:57):
calling nine one one on his serie right now. Yeah,
because I'm devastated about this show. I need some I
needed some CPR at this exact moment. All right, let's
uh oh, did the Astros let you down yesterday? Rossie.
We'll give you the answer to that. Next plus the
news at noon eleven fifty nine on Sports Talk seven
to ninety is The Matt Thomas Show with Ross Don't
(01:16:24):
let me do.
Speaker 8 (01:16:27):
The Athletics beat the Astros five to one to take
the first game of this three game series.
Speaker 2 (01:16:33):
Astros have lost four in a row in their playoff. Host.
I don't know if I call him live support, but
we're calling. We're calling in medical care. If they lose tonight,
it's on live support. I am mister five and one.
(01:16:53):
I guess I gotta live with four and two, but
I need five and one.
Speaker 10 (01:16:57):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:16:57):
In one day their player go ahead. They went from
sixty six percent to forty four percent, So you're saying
there's a chance.
Speaker 7 (01:17:15):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:17:16):
My answer to that question is posted on Torch Talk
seven nineties Twitter and I reposted it on my Instagram
at sports RV. All right, listen to me. The reason
why the Astros have struggled is because not enough of
you are following me on Instagram. At sports mt Wait
a minute, no, you said they were gonna win. They
were gonna win all these games if I followed you,
they lost four in a row. So you're lying. My
(01:17:37):
point is it? Here's my point? Okay, people didn't advice.
Huh if you follow me right this second at sports
empt on Instagram, the Astros are going to win fall
back maybe false promises and false promises and lies at
sports MPT this admit it, ladies, jump in twelve oh seven.
(01:18:01):
Time Now for the news at noon? Yeah, ROSSI the ass, Matthew,
what do we got today in the old news at noon?
Ashrow's got their ass whooped that. I'm sad that's the
news at noon?
Speaker 12 (01:18:16):
All right.
Speaker 2 (01:18:16):
We did play the highlight, so that's fair three hits,
Matthew oh for three. With runners in scoring position, they
had three hits, three walks, two of them by Christian Walker.
Everybody else besides he and Yanard he is over with
your bags against the wall again. We should say the
A's are pretty good actually, and I will maintain if
(01:18:38):
you blended both teams and set a lineup, the top
five would all be a's from last night, with Jeremy
Paine remaining out with his oblique injury, with jord On
Alvarez remaining out with his uh with his ankle injury,
and with Esach Pritus on one leg and not able
to run. You've given me if this, if this, if this,
if this, you know when you do that, you know
(01:18:59):
what that means. It wasn't meant to be. And I'm
they're starting to starting to settle into my my brain right.
It's not feeling like their year. I said that to
you two weeks ago, and you got mad at me.
I didn't get mad at you. Well, we'll see what
happens there. Still have forty four percent playoff odds. You
have the Guardians beating the Tigers last night. They are
(01:19:21):
tied in the American League Central for the lead. So
technically you are behind the Tigers right now. You do
not have a tie breaker with where I want to
hear from Astros beat all the good teams and lose
all to the bad teams. Guy, because if they beat
If the Astros beat all the good teams, how come
they don't have the tiebreaker against the Blue Jays, the Mariners,
the Tigers, the Guardians, or the Red Sox do they?
(01:19:46):
They might have the tiebreaker for Toronto. Oh is it
the only one? Oh, it doesn't really matter matter? Yeah? Yeah,
how was feeling instapole time? Right now? Right this second?
You got the instapol music. Jonavan, He's like, I think
(01:20:09):
it's been a while, it's been a while. It's what
a chain reaction? Yep, it's got to be in there somewhere.
Oh yeah, we'll find it. He's uploading videos for us.
Appreciate he's already Brian Bok's a video. Look at that retweet.
Jonathan is working really, really hard. I'm telling you you
the two of you are out outperforming performing me on
hustling me. And you're probably saying, Matte, this is something
you've said, Toto. We've been talking about this behind the
(01:20:31):
scenes for months. It's time. Turn of music up, It's
time girdesta pole. I'd always say you Roskin doesn't lie.
Seven one three two one two five seven ninetie seven
one three two one two five seven. Honie, wait, you
didn't tag me in this reel, Jonathan, your your praises
are revoked. Ooh, the question I have for you very simply?
(01:20:54):
Can the Astros make the playoffs? Yes? Or no? First
of four wins seven one three two one two five
seven Anti Instapole doesn't lie? You simply will we will
not screen you. We'll just go to the phones. Either
you say yes, they do, No they don't, right, yes,
no screening on the instaple, No screening on the instapol.
(01:21:16):
So here we go seven one three two one two
five Sevenati seven one three two one two five seven
Anti Either they make the playoffs or they don't. What
is your answer? Remember the Instapole does not lie. Don't
we just talking about the screen? Yeah? No, no screen,
no screen, no click, no screen. Here we go seven
one three two. We're just having to save you some time,
my brother. Let's go line one on the instipole. Are
(01:21:38):
the Astros making the playoffs? Line one?
Speaker 7 (01:21:41):
As much.
Speaker 6 (01:21:41):
Does it hurts me to say this, Matt, I don't
think so, not this year.
Speaker 2 (01:21:45):
No, that's a no. All right, it's one no rush
keeping track, I got it tally. Line two instanpole the
astros making the playoffs, yes or no? Not no, Lord,
that was emphatic.
Speaker 10 (01:21:59):
Oh no.
Speaker 2 (01:22:00):
Line three in the asker is making the playoffs? Yes
or no?
Speaker 4 (01:22:06):
Hell no?
Speaker 2 (01:22:10):
And I did I did at you in this reel,
by the way. Shame him, shame him. Oh no, you
edit it just now. Line two in the AS is
making the playoffs. Yes or no? Line two Hello, Line
two the askers making the playoffs, Yes or no?
Speaker 20 (01:22:28):
No?
Speaker 2 (01:22:29):
Right, we had four nos so far, ROSSI are we
gonna get a yes eventually? Fantastic? Line three on the
interpol the AS is making the playoffs. Yes or no?
There we go. All right, that's it closed. I stopped counting.
Actually it's four to one. It's done. We had two nose,
(01:22:49):
definitely the first two. That's something we've had. Four nose. Yeah,
all right, back to the back to the news at dune.
So confidence is not high. No, no, it is not
all right. Texans back on the practice field. Can't wait
to hear the reports coming out of that today.
Speaker 1 (01:23:07):
M M.
Speaker 2 (01:23:07):
Everybody's in a much better mood. Great from my mind,
it does help. The sucky Titans will be here on Sunday.
They're bad, but you're only six and a half point favorites.
By the way. TV coverage will be with Beth Owens
and Ross Tucker. Oh wonderful, sounds good. Should be a
great call, CBS the best of the best. The map
(01:23:30):
is out for the game on five o six dot com,
which is an I'm obsessed website. The game will be
seen this week in Houston, Austin, San Antonio, The Valley, Waco, Odessa, Abilene, Lubbock, Amarillo.
Dallas says no. Dallas said no thanks. They're gonna put
(01:23:50):
Washington Atlanta on over them. That happens fairly serious. Yeah,
Dallas does not put Texans games on. They just don't.
They don't want to build the fan base. And then
and in the Nashville market is Nashville, Memphis, Huntsville, Knoxville,
Indianapolis is gonna.
Speaker 4 (01:24:05):
Have the game.
Speaker 2 (01:24:06):
So there you go.
Speaker 8 (01:24:07):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (01:24:08):
Hall of Fame finalist man on the News at Noon
play in twenty twenty six include Drew Brees and Larry
Fitzgerald in their first year of eligibility. I'm gonna go ahead,
put my name on it. They're making the hollwamere both
going in. There is an NFL quarterback change going on
in New York City Sports RV. Okay, Yes, Jackson dart
is gonna start in New York. But quick, quick one,
(01:24:30):
Matt yep first year of eligibility. Four, Philip Rivers, just
give me a yes, sir. No, let's say it again.
Philip Rivers. No, but eventually yes. Greg Olsen, no, yes, no,
but eventually okay. Jason Witten, No, I could see Witten
(01:24:52):
being first team. He's He's one of the all time
leading past catchers who dray to have Greg Olson er
and Jason Witten. Jason Witten had the better career. I'm
gonna say Jason Witten. I'll go no yes on that
one as well. Witting is fourth on catches all the time.
So know me is when I say no, I mean
he's see your first ballot guy top four catches all time,
Jerry Rice, Larry Fitzgerald, Tony Gonzalez, Jason Witten, Marvin Harrison,
(01:25:17):
he's in. I think he think I think yes, yes, Okay,
I think first ballot Frank Gore no, and yes, Lashawn
McCoy no one.
Speaker 4 (01:25:27):
Yes.
Speaker 2 (01:25:29):
Oh you're thinking no, I aren't you. I didn't think
like Frank Gore. Yes, Lasha McCoy bre is like top
seven in all time rushing, right, yeah, because he's been
around forever. David Dicastro, he's without the Steelers a long time.
I think David di Castro he was alignment. Okay, I
don't know him a guard. Yes, nine season with the Steelers,
(01:25:51):
two time All Pro not enough, okay, sorry, David Marquise Pouncy,
I'd have to look on.
Speaker 20 (01:25:56):
No.
Speaker 2 (01:25:56):
Gino Atkins, No, No, Dree Casey, no, Thomas dave Is No.
I believe any Foster's in the list too. Correct. Oh really,
that's a no to guys who will be coming back around,
Willie Anderson, Tory Holt, Luke Keigley, Adam Van and Terry
Vari That Vnitary got in. Vnitaries should be in two
(01:26:19):
great teams, two big field goal kickers, now, No, he
wasn't knocking back. Luke Keickley should be in, although long.
Jevy he retired very young. Yeah, all right, And Jackson
Dart is now the new co Knew, the new quarterback
of the New York Giants, and Brian Dable, the coach
who will not be there very much longer, says he's
going to be the quarterback for the rest of the season.
It's kind of presumptuous, isn't it. It's a desperation move.
(01:26:41):
It's a it's uh, he's got he's catching him. He's
he's buying a lot or he taken to try to
save his job. Yeah, he's out. I would love him
as Texans OC next year. Let's get a real in here. Yeah,
and maybe a real general manager to come. No Patriot
Way here. I'm done with Patriot Way. And that's the
news at noon, all right. Even though you don't bet
(01:27:02):
the Astros are making the playoffs, I get that. I
want you all to please believe me what I say.
You want them to make the playoffs. There is no
negative effect of the app like, you don't lose draft position,
you don't lose salary dollars. You don't there aren't kickers
in there. You want them to go to the playoffs?
(01:27:24):
You know what? Baseball does have a lottery? Now, how
does that work? You're asking the wrong person, by the way,
Baseball Draft. They've tried to make it somewhat sexy. It's
not and it never will be. Okay with the Astros
out uh or I they are lottery odds right now
are point three to nine percent. Oh wait, maybe we
do want them to make the lottery chit chobumb ass
(01:27:47):
up man. I will have none of that, Okay. I
don't want to be the Nationals. I don't be. I'm
watching them Nationals and the Braves on MLB Network. Can
we give like NonStop Shahati? Yeah, it looks like first team.
That's pretty good. Looks like can you play that again?
(01:28:08):
By the way, my idea on those sound on that sound?
Oh you're doing great, map. Thanks zero point thirty nine
lottery odds for the Astros for the number one overall pick.
So you're saying that's a chance. I don't care. Whatever
will be will be. Let me tell you we I
feel like I'm having to convince people that are around
(01:28:30):
bumping around this town October. Baseball is electric. It's as
good as it's a little cooler. There may be a
puncher's chance as a home game at some point the
roof might be open.
Speaker 12 (01:28:41):
Who knew?
Speaker 2 (01:28:43):
Yeah, the see the close Razor's edge. October baseball bat
as good as it gets. And when you give up
two Grand Slams and you're out of the game, cause, uh,
who is that pitcher the Astros traded forward? Then he
was bad. I can't remember give up the second grandson
of the Red Sox few years ago. Anyway, Oh oh oh, oh,
(01:29:03):
the guy was always hurt. It doesn't matter, It doesn't matter.
I wish my memory was better than it was because
I got so much going on. I got, I got
NBA in my head. Jake oder Rizzy, yes, remember I
remember he was he He took all that time to
warm up because somebody got hurt, and then he gave him.
Speaker 1 (01:29:20):
The home of.
Speaker 2 (01:29:23):
Jake Oderizzy. That's when playoff baseball sucks. Or it's Game
seven and twenty three against the Rangers and then Christian
Havier can't get out of the second inning. Maybe it
was the first inning. Remember that time that you album
that uh fromer Valdez melted down the mountain. Oh, that's
happening with the last two months. He well, remember that
time he threw eight innings of one run ball Infinway
(01:29:45):
in June. No, that was in October. Oh, Okay, previous years,
I got you twenty twenty one, I think, Yeah, he
threw seven innings against the Rockies. You know what, I'm gonna,
Rick Ashley, this thing, I'm never gonna give you up.
I'm gonna I'm going to continue to whole lot help
the Astros can put it together. Yeah, until until they can,
until it's zero percent. I believe because they have come through.
(01:30:09):
We were sitting here last year at some point in
this guess two years ago we were sitting there. Yeah,
because I'm a fan, you hear me. I'm a fan.
No Fancas fan can be critical. Fan doesn't have to
buy into everything that somebody says. Look, we've been as
disappointed in the direction of the organization on a variety
of things. Doesn't mean we still can't love them. Use
(01:30:35):
use a Texas. Sometimes things you love disappoint you. Actually,
the things that you love disappoint you more than the
things that you know. You know what you love. The
Texans they're owing three and they're headed. Actually, I'm more
pissed off at them that I'm disappointed at this moment.
And to the best part for me is I have
no relationship with the Texans. Well, they suck, so I
don't have the emotional Could you imagine what a basket like?
(01:30:58):
I'm a basket case right now. In general, that's fair.
The Rockets lost Fred van Vliet, that's good. Okay, that's
that's flipping me out a little bit. The men season. Baby.
By the way, did you say there are people that
are thinking the Rockets could be down to a sixteen
went in the Western playoffs because of this?
Speaker 10 (01:31:13):
God?
Speaker 2 (01:31:13):
I hope not.
Speaker 7 (01:31:15):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:31:15):
By the way, did you see that I retweeted that
the conservatism of Demiico Ryans is costing the Texans every week?
Please explain so. Obviously, punting and kicking and going for
things cost you if you if you should be going
for fourth down, it costs you win probability. Mm hmm.
Dimiico is costing the Texans almost five percent a game,
(01:31:37):
and the NFL five percent is huge. It's the second
worst in football, behind only the Bengals Zach Robinson, who's
very conservative. Now you also can say, hey, how how
can he be aggressive in fourth down decisions when the
team's no good offensively? So I'm going to ask you
if I'm going to ask you a very very difficult
question coming back. I bet you, I'll answer easily. I
(01:32:01):
want you to give him now recency bias, so put
that in perspective the two plus years he has coached
this team. I want you to give him a grade. Okay,
and we'll do and come back. Don't do it now, okay.
I do want to give you a chance to get
a seven year warranty from Quality Home Products to Texas.
(01:32:21):
That's what I'm here for, that's right. I want you
to get a seven year warranty on a Generaic standby
generator by calling seven to one three quality seven one
three quality for Quality Home Products of Texas. You need
a generator because the power is going to go out.
Matter of fact, we got some severe storms coming later
this afternoon. If your power goes out, you would love
(01:32:43):
to have a generator ready and available, wouldn't you. That's
where you're also going to get fifteen hundred dollars off
an air cool generator from Generaic and from Quality Home
Products to Texas seven one three quality, seven one three,
quality quality parts, quality insurance, quality installation, everything is top shelf.
(01:33:05):
Seventy seven thousand plus people have gotten their generators from
Quality Home Products fourteen thousand, five star reviews and you're
getting a seven year warranty financing as low as one
sixty eight a month. My goodness, my friends, let's go
get that Generac stand by generator at fifty hundred dollars
off right now. Seven to one to three quality quality
(01:33:26):
home products of Texas. Stop me, A'm all the way up. Well,
three heads can stop you. Three freaking singles, a hit
by pitch and a double playball and then a lot
of cannon corn fly balls. There's your aster a rundown.
I'm getting some messages from listeners that are mad about
(01:33:46):
the instapole. The insipolt doesn't live because y'all are cranky,
and I kind of get it. I just don't want
you to give up, terrible droopy dog take don't want
them to make the playoffs. Do we need to play
some rick acid to get people fired out? No, we
need Why is it never gonna give you up? We're
gonna let you down, all right? With some Astros highlights? Yeah, yeah,
we want. We don't have to say that one for tomorrow.
(01:34:10):
They're winning. They're winning. Put your name on it. M
Louis Evarino has done very well against the Astros this year.
And not putting my name on it. By the way. Uh,
somebody on Twitter said the A's have a better record.
Let me look at it last fifty games in the Astro. Yeah,
it's actually I think it's it goes beyond that, if
I'm not mistaken. Okay, Yeah, they've been better than the
Astros for two straight months plus. Let's see what you
(01:34:32):
got again. Look at that lineup and we did this
against the Mariners, Like, yeah, Mariners, comes, We're gonna whip
your ass. Greg and htown the A's since the Astros
swept the Dodgers in July? Was that around July fourth?
Speaker 10 (01:34:46):
Right?
Speaker 2 (01:34:46):
Because I got fourth weekend? I work, Remember I were Holladays,
we'll proud of you. Astros are twenty nine and thirty eight.
The A's are thirty seven and twenty eight. They have
been better than you. You have been injured and underperforming.
You have more fans at your games. Nicol Kurtz, Shay
Leanngeliars Tyler, shotters from Brent Rooker, Jacob Wilson, all better
(01:35:08):
than what you've got in your lineup at the moment.
All right, back on the phones in a minute. We
gonna pay off on the T's the question I asked
you great? What is what is Demico Ryan's great? Back
to back ANFC South champions, ten wins, divisional losses, visional losses,
er and three start great? Macrely Is that a word? Macrely?
No sounds good? Okay, I have a macrop I can say,
(01:35:30):
all right, Macrely's not a word. I think it's a great.
I'm gonna use it again though. I'm a macro gale.
I'm gonna will it into existence. Yeah, you got a
lot of made up fetitional word from a macro standpoint. Great,
the coach be nice, damn it. Good defensive coach uh
good defensive play color generally when the team's not on
the when the defense is on on the field. The
(01:35:51):
biggest issues have been offensive line. That's not Dimko's fault.
Offensive play calling not Dimko's fault. He does make I
think overly conservative decisions. That would be my biggest blight.
That's why I mean, you can't give them an a.
They really turned things around early. They're doing the text
and swarm and the culture and all that type of stuff,
and they do got some some swag on defense. I
(01:36:15):
got one thing I'm really bothered with besides the conservancy
conservative conservatisms. Conservatism is the sheer number of penalties that
this team has anything. It was definitely okay. Maybe that
bumped down a C plus. I could see that argument.
Speaker 9 (01:36:27):
No, see, I.
Speaker 2 (01:36:28):
Think C plus is too hard because you are a
two time playoff team. This team minus feels right to me.
They've hit the over on the wind total two straight years.
As you know, Matt, I do know that you might
hit you know what, I thought I was swindling you
with the seven and a half bet we have on
the bet we have a better look. Let me go,
(01:36:48):
look we we bet lunch or something. I'm gonna I
don't have to under seven and a half wins. And
I didn't want to publicize it as I didn't want to,
and I thought I squiddled you so bad. Oh, I
don't care about that bet. I want the Kyle Tucker
bet to win, that's all. You're way more important to me. No, sir,
you are way done. You are way done. I know
(01:37:11):
I'm the money who after the Tarioki steak. By the way, Jonathan,
you're going with us, Yeah, with the vegetables, go ahead,
We'll give you the give me the broccoli too. I
need some vegetables. Oh wow, look Matt, he's making an
onion tower volcano. That's cool. Oh look at how he's
(01:37:32):
spinning the egg when he's making the fried rice. Matt,
thanks for paying. All right, let me look at the bet.
You're not a laughing at bet? No because you're being rude.
Well we have it just says lunch bet. Yeah, so
that's like lunch. I'll put in a dendum Delhi. All right,
(01:37:54):
let's go to Uh there's another at Texans bet we made.
Do you remember this one? Go ahead, I have you
have the field, but I have no playoffs for the
Texans or Saturday at three thirty there. We didn't put
anything on that gentlemen's bet. All right, who's online? Three?
Is that on Nigel? It's Nigel. We had both Nigel
and Nigel call on the same day. Hi, Negel, Hey,
how's it going good?
Speaker 17 (01:38:16):
So, Matt, do you know how for the last few
years you've been unfairly characterized as having a curse, you know,
relating to people getting injured?
Speaker 2 (01:38:29):
Correct and thankful that has been long one, that's about
seven or eight years in the past. But I appreciate
you bringing it back up.
Speaker 4 (01:38:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 17 (01:38:35):
So I think we do have a new curse, and
I think it's an an RV curse. When you were
off last week. When you were off last week, Ross
did the three lies in a truth segment.
Speaker 2 (01:38:49):
Before the Tell the Truth Sunday.
Speaker 12 (01:38:51):
Yeah, yeah, ask ask Ross what is truth was?
Speaker 2 (01:38:54):
Oh, let's I don't even remember you have it? I
don't know it was. It is gonna be a franchise
quarterback by the end of the season. This is the
season over, Nigel, Well, pretty much.
Speaker 3 (01:39:08):
No, it's not plenty of time for that offensive line
of jail Woodie Marx is ready to cook and the
Texans are ready to ride the victory.
Speaker 2 (01:39:18):
Let me check in Tennessee, Nigel, he doesn't believe it
what he just said.
Speaker 14 (01:39:22):
This it is a curse.
Speaker 12 (01:39:24):
It's a curse, all right.
Speaker 2 (01:39:26):
You know on what I'm gonna be fair and balanced.
I don't believe in curses. There was no such thing
as a sports RV. Yeah. I backed off that curse
bit years ago. Do you remember why I did that. No,
we were entering Evan Gaddison. He was talking about the
guys in the clubhouse. We're talking about it, and I
was like, this has gone out of control. We stopped.
This is too much when guys don't want to come
on the show because baseball players are superstitious, basically the
(01:39:49):
most superstitious of anybody. I was like, oh god, this
is affecting the show. I gotta stop this bit, and
we thank you for that. Let's go to a lookie here,
just a bit of course, Matt, you do you don't
control injuries. And I don't believe in curses either. I'm
never I'm not super superstitious. I'm not even a little stitch.
I don't have a superstitious bone in my body. I
(01:40:10):
don't think like I'll talk about no hitters don't care.
Yeah I will, I will. I will bring an umbrella
in the house. I will do it as a joke.
Let's say I'm watching the Long the Long Horns or
Astros somebody, I'm like, hey, switch seats with me. I'm
not being I don't really think that affects the game,
but just kind of like mix it up. What's what?
Speaker 10 (01:40:30):
What?
Speaker 2 (01:40:30):
What's the black cat? When you can't walk with it
near a ladder, that you can't walk under a ladder?
All right, I've black cat crosses your path. You could
don't walk in a path that a black cat walk.
Then I think, hmmm, do you walk on cracks? Can't
crack mirrors? I know you will break your mother's back
mat Do you sit, sit, criss cross apple sauce. Don't
(01:40:52):
split the pole? Excuse me, don't split the pole. When
you're you're walking with your lady and you're holding hands
and there's you've got to both go around it, you can't.
We're just even. Yeah, if I was walking with Ross,
he can't cross that pole. I got an unpopular take
for you romantic people out there. Walking and holding hands
is very difficult. It's hard to get in unison when
(01:41:12):
you're walking somewhere. Yeah, this might just be a mad Thomas. Yeah,
I very rarely do it. What are the what are
the roadblocks that you were seeing in this scenario? Grab
your girl next time you do. You can go for
a walk and see how long you guys can move
your arms back and forth in you don't swing them.
Are you skipping? No, But I'm just saying it's hard
(01:41:34):
to stay. Are you frolicking or are you walking?
Speaker 10 (01:41:37):
No?
Speaker 2 (01:41:37):
Just I'm talking about normal pattern of walking. It's hard
to walk. It's the exact same pace as someone else
and I think holding hands is a detriment, not hard
at all. Are you coordinated? Are you a slow walker? No,
I'm just saying your lady. Is your wife a fast walker?
Speaker 20 (01:41:52):
No?
Speaker 21 (01:41:52):
We don't.
Speaker 18 (01:41:53):
We will.
Speaker 2 (01:41:53):
We will hold hands occasionally, but it's just it doesn't
last long. I mean a lot of things that and
I knew the old ass long and I fully admit
that is what your arm around her. I feel like
that's a very basic human topic. I have never heard
of this. I want you to go to a mall
(01:42:14):
this weekend, and I want you to do a mall,
and I want you to go go look at any
of them. Go to a mall. I want you to
watch somebody hold their hands and say how long they
walk for it? And I guarantee they'll be done with
in about sixty seconds. The average hold holding hands about
sixty seconds. That doesn't feel accurate at all. I mean,
if the walk is sixty seconds, And yeah, I stand
(01:42:38):
on my statement. I feel it's difficult to hold hands
for your significant period time. You can't get in sync
with your wife when you're walking. That's actually alarming, maybe alarming.
I'm just telling you the truth. It doesn't affect in
our marriage. I'm just saying holding hands is not one
of our strong so I almost want to get another instable.
Speaker 4 (01:42:56):
No, die, no, you do not.
Speaker 2 (01:42:59):
All right? Uh, Keith, do you hold your hands with
your wife quite a bit?
Speaker 1 (01:43:03):
We do that all the time, Matt with no problem.
Speaker 2 (01:43:07):
Thank you, Keith Teeth. I want you to tell me,
next time you hold your hands with your girl, I'm
gonna watch. I'm gonna go out and watch you and
see how long you guys last, because you ain't that
only you last much in anything.
Speaker 1 (01:43:19):
We can last for at least thirty minutes walking.
Speaker 2 (01:43:22):
Hand in hand, and we've been doing that for years.
All Right, you got a problem, man, I have a problem.
I'm just telling you. It's just it's just something that's
never been a fourteen in our relationship. The holy hands
about forty five fifty second stops. Well, who's who's pulling
away from? Who's me? More than that makes sense? Can
(01:43:43):
you get your phone out? That's why, Keith. Congratulations on
the making the playoffs. So I guess I don't care
at this point.
Speaker 1 (01:43:56):
Okay, so I really wanted to talk about the rocket
play I'm just go ahead and just go ahead and
rain on your parade. I predicted a month ago that
the Yankees would win the American League East. We're still
gonna do it. They got five games left and Toronto's
gonna lose at least two games. And as for your astros,
(01:44:18):
it's see you later, baby and March.
Speaker 2 (01:44:23):
How about that.
Speaker 19 (01:44:25):
Now?
Speaker 2 (01:44:26):
Thanks Yankees, Keith.
Speaker 1 (01:44:28):
Here's here's the prediction of that. The Rockets fans are
gonna love. Right around Christmas, We're gonna get a Christmas
gift with a Hall of Famer. His name is Russell Westbrook.
He will be playing point guard, you know, like for
these fifteen minutes per game.
Speaker 2 (01:44:48):
They can't afford them. They're hard capted.
Speaker 1 (01:44:51):
No, I'm talking about December fifteenth. That's when they say, okay, yeah,
we're gonna get Russell.
Speaker 2 (01:44:58):
What's what's the Well's west We're going. That's fine, and
we're going all the way to the finals. If Russ
can make rust can make that happen, I'm all for.
I'm not anti Russell Westbrook. I mean, I needed when's
the last time he was in the finals. I mean,
uh no, it's been twelve. It's been a while, all right,
(01:45:18):
twelve forty five is a time. Uh Biscuit, Mike and
stun up. We'll get to we got Mike wants somebody
holding hands and the history of me doing sports radio. There,
I'll holding hands. Call God, this is the best show
history of you. This is the best show on the planet.
This same might go down for yourself.
Speaker 4 (01:45:33):
You think so.
Speaker 2 (01:45:34):
Now both Biscuits and Michael want to talking about it.
Get CRUs. Somebody wants you to have you back. We'll
find out when we come back. When we find Okay, please,
can somebody have my back? Says it's difficult to hold
hands for a significant period of time. Some just one person,
just one little person out there. We get six million
people in Houston, Texas. Seven one three two one two
(01:45:57):
five seven duty all right, Man Ross with you here
on Sports Talk seven Hoey, let's get back on the phones.
Coming up in the one o'clock hour, we'll run through
the news headlines the day again. One twenty will replace
some of the Brian bogus of a conversation we had
one thirty. Willie Fritz could be with us as our
cougars America's Cougar's Ross will be an Oregon State take
on those beavers Friday Night from Corvallis, Oregon. And then
(01:46:22):
we got Texans on Sunday. Uech, Who's Texas? You got
it off? Wee get get ready for that big Florida game. Correct?
Speaker 7 (01:46:29):
All right?
Speaker 2 (01:46:29):
A and m's got Auburn coming into Kyle Field and
Heisman favorite John Teer, the Oklahoma quarterback had hand surgery
here weeks right, probably gonna miss the ou Texas game.
So now I'm back on to go baby. So you
basically went because of a man's bad dumb I'm more
likely to go. Yes, I've been when Longharts have been
(01:46:51):
underdogs multiple times. I mean, isn't one you ever go
during the John Blake era? No, that's good. First one
I went to was six. That was is Cole McCoy.
They won handily. I think it was twenty eight to
ten or something like that. All right, let's go to
a biscuit on seven, Ony biscuit.
Speaker 1 (01:47:09):
What do you got today, cougar mad I knew was
something I liked about you?
Speaker 14 (01:47:13):
Manha, I don the goat him reason now. Let mean
have to stay fair this weekend, and the wife's gonna
reach your hand out and I'm gonna tell her two
people can't walk at the same pace. It's not doable.
Speaker 1 (01:47:26):
Now where you get that from?
Speaker 2 (01:47:27):
Now, I'm coogar mad. Tell me, yeah, throw me under
the bus. That's fine. I'm not I'm not anti holding hands.
I just want to make sure I'm clear on this.
It's just it has not gone like more than a
couple of minutes. That's just the reality.
Speaker 1 (01:47:41):
I agree.
Speaker 2 (01:47:42):
That's all I'm saying. That's all i'm saying. I'm not
saying it's bad. I'm not saying let me tell you
if you can do it, applause to you.
Speaker 7 (01:47:48):
I just not.
Speaker 2 (01:47:49):
I've not been able to do it my life.
Speaker 14 (01:47:53):
They and met all the Astros fans and the words
of a Rinca Aretha Franking reap the frank Ain't no way,
ain't no way, man, it's over baby, ain't no way.
Speaker 2 (01:48:08):
There is a way though, thank you Biscuit for the Rossie.
There's a way they win the next five they're in
the playoffs. Just telling you, yeah, yeah, that's a way.
There's a way. Forty four chance. How we're feeling flustraw, Hey,
fleustraws all the time? Would you say, oh, flustraw is
(01:48:30):
like fusterol? Like when is that a chemical? I got
that too, a flush draw, flush draw, flush draw?
Speaker 8 (01:48:39):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (01:48:39):
Yeah, sorry, I didn't go to Syracuse. No, Detroit Uh
plays Boston. I think to close it the heir, they're
gonna beat each other up, just like Try and Clifford
and beating each other. That's where the odds come from.
So that as you look at it as a practical matter,
if you if you don't look at those everybody else's schedules,
you're like, they have no chance. But when you factor
in that a lot of these teams are playing against
each other, then then that's when you have a chance. Yeah.
The only way I think you can win the next
(01:49:00):
five and still not make the playoffs is if Detroit
loses every single game, which hell name blew a fifteen
and a half game lead, that would be certain within
the realm of possibility here, aj Hinch, you think A
is gonna get the I don't think I mean fifteen
and a half game lead. In July, a certain host
on this station said this on air, Adam klintn er Waxler,
(01:49:22):
that there is mutual interest between the Astros and aj Hinch. Wait,
whoa whoa? You said this? A certain seven ninety host?
Speaker 4 (01:49:30):
Was it?
Speaker 2 (01:49:31):
You said this? On air, it was not me. Is
there a scenario where both teams missed the playoffs or
the Tigers just don't perform well in the playoffs and
you're twenty twenty six. Houston Astros manager is Aj Hinch.
(01:49:52):
I thought it sounded way whack and off the table.
Who said the first week? I'd tell me who said this?
Adam Clinton? He said it? Where you were going? All right?
Can I give you You're let me give you some
layers on this. Joe spot it in. AJ are close.
That is true, So I do not believe AJ would
(01:50:14):
snake his way in Okay, Okay. But however, however, Aj
still lives north of the Woodlands and has decided not
to move full time to Detroit. Mm hmm. And the
Greatest Stretch, Well, Dusty did himself pretty well too. But
(01:50:36):
AJ was beloved here by the organization because you not
only got a really good manager, but you also got
a guy that had some GM chops too. He has
been in front offices of teams. Yes, I like your
player front office and a manager and a World Series champion.
(01:50:57):
I like Joe. I don't want Joe to go. But
if Joe was to lose his job, which I don't
believe is the case. I don't think he will either.
I would. I would absolutely love a phone called aj
WE And maybe that's me personally, just personal bias, and
I can fully admit that to the audience. You might
have to make a trade. There is precedent, I believe,
as Ozzie Giann was traded from White Sox to the
(01:51:20):
Marlins do that. I don't think the Tigers let him go.
But it is a half not even make the playoffs.
That's the media collapse, Matthew. That is a media one.
Scott and river Oaks in twelve fifty six, Scott, good afternoon.
Speaker 6 (01:51:35):
What's going on fellas so man this week, as obviously
everyone knows, has been even taking one on the chin.
It's in the city of Houston on Sunday, after the
Texans got embarrassed and the Astros decided to say one,
two or three Cancune. It was all I mean, it
was almost spooky. I said to about four or five
(01:51:56):
people whoever I was talking to about the state of sports,
is like, well, at least we got Rocket season. At
least Rocket season is coming up. Let's get excited. In
less than twenty four hours after that we get the
news about Fred van Fleet. I wanted to call and
try and give some optimism on the Rockets. The more
I've sat with this Fred van Fleet injury and what
my thoughts are on it, I wanted to hear what
(01:52:17):
you'll have to say. So when I first heard it,
I mean, with everything else going on too, it is
absolutely like you've got to be kidding me right now.
But I do think with the Men being the starting
point guard, we're gonna be maybe the best defensive team
in the NBA with Dorian Pinion's DFS at two and
(01:52:38):
I think the Men can make the all start Reed Shepherd.
You know, with Fred still in the lineup, Reid was
gonna get minutes, but if he wasn't playing well, there
was still going to be We still had enough guys
to not put him on the floor. Now he's going
to be a true backup point guard and get a
chance to develop through the highs and loads low. So
(01:53:00):
it could be a blessing in disguise for redevelopment in
the long term. I think there's no question about that.
So I still think he may being the coach. There's
enough talent on the Rockets too for us look forward
to that. Yeah, but let's just try and get through
the rest of the Taska.
Speaker 2 (01:53:19):
Thank you, Scott. Yeah, they're gonna need reach upper. He's
gonna have to grow up fast.
Speaker 10 (01:53:23):
He is.
Speaker 2 (01:53:23):
He had to grow up fast first and foremost before
the injury. Now he's really gonna have to grow up
all right, Final hour of the Matt Thomas Show with
Ross coming up. We've still got if you miss our
Brian Bogus have a conversation. It's always excellent. We'll get
to that, will he Fritz and believe it or not?
Today at one fifty, which is the category of is
this this team's hitting coaches? Oh my god? I actually
(01:53:47):
you know what I'm gonna do that. I'll leave it
Google say this? How about this? Why don't you do
it with famous hitting coaches? Man, I can handle it.
Are you sure? Are you sure? This could be Minutia
Field twelve fifty eight Sports Talk seven ninety one O
three on Sports Talk seven ninety seven one three two
(01:54:08):
one two five is seven nine zero is how you
reach the show if you want to get in seven
one three two one two five seven nine zero is
how you reach us. Uh, we are getting ready for
game number two of another climactic as Astros game in
West Sacramento, a huge clash at the little minor league
(01:54:30):
stadium with Now, how do they go from the Oakland
County Coliseum with all that foul territory to basically no
foul territory in that little dinky part. Be curious. What
my guess is, Las Vegas is going to be very small.
There's not a out of real estate there. Yeah, I know,
we got it. Hopefully we're able to unit and go
(01:54:52):
to those first games there, the first Astros games there. Okay, Yeah,
we didn't go to the Texans Vegas game. Yeah, you
told me we were going to go. I know, remember
we said we were gonna get Vega season tickets. A
good thing we didn't do that. I think we would
have taken a big, big loss on that big Vegas
is going way down. The economy over there is not good.
You know what it is, and I've do you and
I I think we generally agree on this. To me,
(01:55:14):
it's Vegas is out prices of nothing, nothing that our
economy is bad. We're just not going to pay for
Las Vegas prices anymore. Yeah, And a lot of it
like Charles two hours away, I get my fix, and
it's it's become soulless and they've squeeze every extra dime
they can out of you, especially on the strip. And
then also, I mean a lot of people would go
to sports Gamble and it's it's available in like thirty
(01:55:36):
seven on your phone in the neighboring state and lost again.
I still love Vegas because I feel like it's my
little world away from the real life that I live in.
So it's a kind of great escape for me. But
it is a logistical tough spot, especially because you get
the room of ninety nine dollars a night and like, oh,
that's fine, and then you get forty six dollars and
(01:55:56):
fees at it on every day and the resort fees
are the biggest scammon he in history. So bad, So Vegas.
I don't feel sorry for you. I don't now I
will come back. Took more and more and more and
more and more, and they give less and less and
less and less. Comps everybody's the comps are terrible. Everybody.
You If you go get a cab, you open up
the door, they want you tip for that. If you
(01:56:16):
want to ext you have to tip for that. I
mean guy holds the door and got his hand out. Yeah,
I could open the door, my friend. Yeah, everybody has
their hand out more so than ever before because you know,
part of it is because they used to get the money.
Now they're not getting it as much, so that it
feels a little more aggressive. Yeah, there's souls. There's our
(01:56:37):
there's our soul on Las Vegas. It's a solace, wasteland
and flid the Rockets will be there for the season tournament.
I can't wait to get back. But it's you can
come with maybe go. Okay, you got my room? I
mean you know I can share. We've shared rooms before.
It's true. Two beds. I'll use the pullout couch. No,
two beds. This is a nice hotel, too, very nice.
(01:57:00):
Old in there. We got a massage. We can get one.
Massages in Vegas are expenses. It's like three phone dollars.
I'll find you. I got a cheap spot for you.
Speaker 4 (01:57:08):
Do you really?
Speaker 2 (01:57:09):
Yeah, they take care of you. Okay, to the to
the phones we go. Uh, I'm kidding, Stunna. What do
you got today? Stunner?
Speaker 14 (01:57:20):
Stuns you tell us, hey man, First of all.
Speaker 2 (01:57:31):
First of all our phones the stuna. I got terrible
news for you. Your phone's it's probably our fault. It
kind of sounded like we're gonna find out whose fault
it really was, because Larry in Galveston is going to
call us, Hi, Larry Man, Hell are you amazing?
Speaker 18 (01:57:53):
I tell you what I wish I could say, amazing.
I've been following.
Speaker 16 (01:57:58):
The Houston ever since they were the Buffaloes, and.
Speaker 18 (01:58:05):
That term never give up. I will never give up.
But one thing that the Astros need right now is
something that only you and Ross can provide for them,
and that is a revival. And we need the revival
(01:58:29):
to be able to get our boys back up on
their feets and go out there and beat the dead
Gum Athletics and then beat the dead Gum Angels, and
so Ross Matt bring the Revival back and bring it
back now. We can't wait anymore. Our backs are up
(01:58:52):
against the wall, as you guys well know. And that's
all I got.
Speaker 2 (01:58:57):
We have to alter the revival a little bit. It uh,
it's a little insensitive in twenty twenty five. Yeah, we're
gonna do. Yeah, we just have to a little bit.
We could certainly have a we could have like like
the light zig Ziggler was a motivational speaker. M not
(01:59:19):
familiar with that guy. Yeah, uh, you've heard a motivational speaker.
She go to those conventions and they had like Tony Robbins. Yeah, yeah,
tonyer is is a good comp We could certainly Tony Robbins.
This thing we did. I used to do this on
the Sports r V show. Was that a good show?
Speaker 10 (01:59:34):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (01:59:34):
It was fantastic. People were loved it. I've had I
had dozens and dozens of people tell me it was
their favorite show on the station. I appreciate all of you.
That was nice of them to do that, especially my mom.
She said it was the best. So she wouldn't let me,
all right continue. Uh. We would do basically like a
like a pregame speech. I wonder if I even have it.
I would play like the Last of the Mohicans theme,
(01:59:55):
and then we would have a contest. Whoever could fire
them up the best would get the get a prize. Yeah,
this is the last Mohicans. I play like a like
a fire.
Speaker 3 (02:00:07):
Yes, you shows you do not what quietly into.
Speaker 2 (02:00:12):
That good night? You have your backs against the wall.
Speaker 3 (02:00:15):
There's only five games left in the season from er Valdez.
Speaker 2 (02:00:19):
Has lost his mind.
Speaker 3 (02:00:21):
Everybody's swinging out of their shoes.
Speaker 2 (02:00:23):
And their helmets. But now is the time you have
to take care of business.
Speaker 3 (02:00:29):
In Sacramento, Hunter Brown is on the mound.
Speaker 2 (02:00:34):
Your ace.
Speaker 3 (02:00:36):
You fought for so long, you've been AOS champions year
after year, and well that's not happening this year because
you're four games back and it's over.
Speaker 2 (02:00:44):
But you can still make a wild card.
Speaker 3 (02:00:47):
You can still fight for the American League Pennant.
Speaker 2 (02:00:52):
Have you know backbone? Have you no will to win?
Speaker 3 (02:00:58):
Show it tonight at Sutter Health Field in baby.
Speaker 2 (02:01:03):
Sacramento, because the time is now. Your becks are against
the wall and you must come through and when a
wild card spot can hopefully not Peter, I'm losing two
games my turn.
Speaker 3 (02:01:17):
Okay, listen to me, Astros. We're in the eleventh round
of this twelve round fight. You have been beaten, you
have been bruised, your cutman is hurt. You don't trust
your doctors, but you're still standing.
Speaker 2 (02:01:41):
Put those gloves in the air.
Speaker 3 (02:01:44):
Can fight for instead, so you can go on the
road in the long card series. And yes, youngerdea Is
you can throw somebody out at second base, and yes,
Christian Walker, you can catch have pop flying the enfield,
and yes Cam Smith or anybody else in the outfield
(02:02:10):
get a hit, please, says ourselves are gonna come back
from sugar Land and Steven Olkirk and Brian King and
I don't care who the hell doesn't, just get us
to the playoffs. You're bloodied, you're a hot mess, you're concussed,
(02:02:35):
but you're gonna fight in Sacramento, West Sacramento.
Speaker 2 (02:02:39):
Actually it's a block him downtown Sacramento, but it's on
a here there, and.
Speaker 3 (02:02:42):
You're gonna go to anhim and you're gonna beat.
Speaker 2 (02:02:45):
These angels and you're gonna go to Cleveland or Boston
and play the wild Card. You're gonna win that series.
And then you're gonna be able to go to the
Astros website and say the visual series that gets are
available and mean it a Howard deanaty in there.
Speaker 4 (02:03:02):
I like that.
Speaker 2 (02:03:07):
All right, really quick, before we get to a little
bit of bogeye Jerry on seven out of Hello Jerry,
Hello Jerry, guys.
Speaker 20 (02:03:15):
Uh, look, you know it's bad one for seeing network.
He's out there saying promoting playoff tickets when the boys
had the basis loaded and can only must have one
run in uh. And also when you're depending on the
Rockies to even help you get a chance with the division,
it's bad ta get up boys after Los Angeles, go
to Kakun, thank you.
Speaker 2 (02:03:38):
Ouch back to Los Angeles and then can kon that's
not nice. Brian bogus Sevic is up next. After I
tell you about the great folks at Affordable Tree Service.
We always get a great opportunity to visit with the
analysts of Spaceity Network on the Astros of course, Brian
bogus Sevic and he joins us every Wednesday at eleven o'clock.
(02:03:59):
Hopefull be back with us next Wednesday to eleven. Today
our conversation, let's hear a little bit of it right
now before we hear from Willie Fritz, coach the Cougars,
was about just how disappointing it was and frustrating it
was to watch the Astros just put together just three
measly singles against the A's last night.
Speaker 7 (02:04:16):
Yeah, it's it's kind of been the story of the
second half or second two thirds or whatever it comes
out to be, is just I mean, the offense looking
not it's the least dangerous that the offense has felt
in some time. And you know, we've seen very short
(02:04:37):
spurts where it looks like they're putting it together, but
on the whole, it just seems like opposing pitchers, regardless
of who we're facing, you know, in the division, out
of the division, just seems like the league had generally
accepted a plan where, you know, they know how they
want to go out and attack this lineup, and there aren't,
you know, adjustments being made, and it's just, you know,
(02:05:01):
it's you're getting beat by what looks like an inferior
matchup on paper.
Speaker 2 (02:05:07):
So let me ask you this, This is a tough one.
Is there any defeatist mode up and down that lineup?
Is that this season wasn't meant to be? I mean,
you still largely control your own destiny. I know you're
now down a game in the Walter Card, but has
that started to sink in a little bit? Can you
see it? Or is that is it still for you
and I and Ross here we're eighteen or miles away
(02:05:29):
from that team. We can't make that kind of decision
our assessment. Yeah, No, I don't think so.
Speaker 7 (02:05:35):
I mean, I think you've got You've got guys in
the clubhouse. You know, as long as as long as
they're mathematically still in it, that they have a chance,
and nobody's gonna you know, go and kind of, you know,
give up before it's over. But I also think that
they they you know, you have to have a little
bit of realist in you and realize just you know,
for an extended period of time, it's been a struggle.
(02:05:56):
Certainly offensively, there's been forge able to number I saw
the other day is like one hundred and forty eight
or one hundred and forty nine different lineup combination. So
that just speaks to how many guys have been in
and out of the lineup, whether it be injury or
performance wise. So yeah, it's definitely probably set in that
you know, this is not nothing's going to click and
(02:06:18):
all of a sudden we're going to be an offensive juggernaut.
I think everybody certainly realizes that. But you also have
enough guys in that lineup who you know, we're looking
at looking at what is now a five day season.
There you can get a couple guys hot in five
days and then they can carry a lineup and you
can score enough runs to get yourself in. It's certainly
not out of the realm with possibility.
Speaker 2 (02:06:40):
Brian bogasvik with us here on seven ninety and hopefully
this is not our last appearance of the season, but Bogey,
we're going to look at a macro view of this
team and Christian Walker. Obviously a lot of folks were
excited about the replacement at first base. This team has
been looking for that solid offensive production, maybe since the
last few years of you early Guriel. Obviously the Jose
(02:07:02):
A Brave situation did that workout. He never was going
to be a two eighty five hitter here, but it
just feels like there have been two or three games
where like, oh, he's going to turn the corner and
then it's a one for eleven or it's a two
for nineteen. When you look at a macro stance of him.
What went wrong for Christian Walker this season?
Speaker 7 (02:07:22):
Well, I think, first and foremost, he got into a situation.
You know when you're when you're a hitter and you
start off slow, you're always kind of doing the math
in your head of Okay, you know I started off
and I'm hitting two hundred after fifty at bats, so
I need to do whatever over my next one hundred
and fifty to get it leveled out, and he got
to a point to where he was so far underwater
it was never going to get back to where he
(02:07:44):
wanted it to be or where he expected it to be.
And that can be a really frustrating thing because you know,
you're sitting all of a sudden, you know, three hundred
at bats in, four hundred bats in, you've got a
lot of season left, and it's already kind of feel like,
all right, this is this is a season that's a failure,
and it's just never gotten to the point to where
it looks like he's been comfortable with himself. You know,
(02:08:05):
there's been times when the attacks have gotten more consistent
and you think, all right, this is the guy that
we expected to see, and then it goes away. I
think a lot of you know, the biggest thing from
a whatever mechanical standpoint or whatever, is just the inconsistency
the hitting fastballs and especially elevated fastballs, and it seems
(02:08:26):
like a hole that got exposed and never got closed up.
So I think that's probably the one thing that you
can look through and say, hey, that's that's what needs
to be fixed moving forward. But I think just from
a seasonal standpoint, it just felt like it got so
far away from him early that just from a mental standpoint,
it felt like almost a lost season before the season
(02:08:46):
was over.
Speaker 2 (02:08:46):
Hey, you mentioned the high fastballs, and I mean, it
feels like anybody who is watching these games Christian Walker
has to know what the hitting coaches know it, everybody
knows it what And you mentioned like, so what can
be done is that? How can that get fixed?
Speaker 7 (02:09:00):
Well, you can look at it two different ways. You
can look at it from a mechanical standpoint, right, find
what's causing extra length in your swing or a drop
off in bat speed. Are you muscling up swinging too hard?
Are you getting long in the back and you're not
getting the barrel out front and try to close it
up and then be able to attack that pitch. Or
you can look at it from an approach standpoint and say,
(02:09:21):
you know, if I can't hit it, I got to
lay off of it, and then you just try to
make that an area that you're not going to go
after pitches until you have to with two strikes. But
that also changes the fact that you have to then
be more aggressive and overly aggressive two pitches further down
in the zone or off speed pitches in the middle
of the zone earlier in you're at bats, so you
(02:09:43):
can you can try to attack it one or the
other or a combination of both. But you know, if
you can't hit it, you got to not swing at it.
Speaker 2 (02:09:50):
And you mentioned now, Brian Begas have a cool this
here on Sports Talk seven nine. You mentioned just seeming
a lack of offensive adjustments because you're right, the walker
four seamer we're seeing, Yeah, still swinging at everything out
of the zone. Same thing for jose Al Tuova. I mean,
what can be done, especially there's been a lot of talk,
and we've been talking about it basically add nausea in
the last couple of weeks Brian about the hitting coaches
(02:10:13):
and the offense has been bad, and Alex Intron and
Troy Snicker the offensive have been successful with him there.
But is it a situation where these guys are not
making the proper adjustments for the lineup.
Speaker 7 (02:10:30):
I don't think though. I mean, hitting coaches are very
involved in game planning, but you know, game planning has
to do yes with the pitchers that you're facing and
how you want to you know, combat what they're throwing
at you, but you also have to make a game
plan that's tailored to hitters that you have. And the
fact of the matter is is that they have a
disproportionate amount of very aggressive hitters. And if you're going
(02:10:52):
to ask those guys to go up there and try
to be something that they're not, you're not doing anybody
any favors. And you know, you use Altwove as an example.
He's always been an overly aggressive hitter. He's always swung
at pitches out of his zone at times. But when
you have him being bracketed in a lineup by Alex
Bregman and Michael Brantley, you can live with that and
(02:11:13):
it doesn't show.
Speaker 2 (02:11:14):
Up as well.
Speaker 7 (02:11:14):
But when you have a lineup that as you go
further down, there's a lot of aggressive hitters. Jeremy Paine
is a very aggressive hitter. Yan Or Diaz is a
very aggressive hitter. And then you get down to the
bottom of the order, and now you're talking about young
guys that are just trying to survive or just find
their footing. You can't ask them to be the ones
that go out there and just drag out at bats.
And fight pitchers down to two strikes. So it just
(02:11:36):
seems like there's a little bit of an imbalance in
terms of style of hitter, and that's something that you
know you can't really work around.
Speaker 4 (02:11:45):
What you don't have.
Speaker 2 (02:11:47):
All right, then think the thoughts again, very logical, and
I say, what of all the things we've done this
season on this show, having him has been great, very
level headed season from player perspective, but also season from
a fan perspective as well. And it's always good to
get Brian's thoughts, and hopefully he'll be with us for
some sort of postseason run. I'm team five and one.
Five and one starts tonight, started last night, that starts tonight. Well,
(02:12:12):
the Fritz coach of your Cougars getting ready for Oregon State.
We'll join us next one twenty nine on Sports Talk
seven ninety the Joint Chiropractic They've got Houston's back to
the official chiropractor of University Houston Athletics brings you Willie
Fritz here on the program and let's say how to
coach and coach. First of all, congratulations on the win
(02:12:35):
against Colorado and the time off. Let me ask you
first and foremost I'm assuming you and your coaches had
a chance to go check out a lot of high
school talent over the last till week or so.
Speaker 10 (02:12:45):
Yeah, it was a lot of fun. When a really
good game on Thursday, nine, real good game on Friday night.
So enjoyed going on. You know, you see a little
bit more in person. You know, the interaction student app lets,
you know, with their teammates, and you know, different things
like that, how they compete, and uh, it's trying to
(02:13:06):
go out. We went out and watched kids who were
committed to us, so it's uh we got a lot
out of it.
Speaker 2 (02:13:12):
Pardon my ignorance on this, but I'm curious, do you
want to tell them you're coming? Do you want them
to not know? And does it matter whether they're committed
or not?
Speaker 10 (02:13:21):
Like knowing? You know, you didn't want to get it
set up, and you know, you tell the high school
coach and I like standing down on the sideline where
I can really get a good bird's eye view of
what's happening going on, and uh, so yeah, they know
that we're coming to the ball game.
Speaker 2 (02:13:36):
Well, you had a chance to uh sail out of
that wall, celebrate the victory against Colorado coach off to
a three and oh start. Not only are you one
of the few undefeated teams still in college football, but
your squad has not turned the ball over. That's always
a focus for every coach. But what has made it
especially more satisfying over the first three weeks, Well, we.
Speaker 10 (02:13:53):
Didn't do a great job of it last year. You know,
it's something we really emphasized last year. We had emphasized
the big time during the spring, in the summer and
preseason camp, and guys just doing a nice job play
call it.
Speaker 13 (02:14:06):
You know.
Speaker 10 (02:14:06):
Part of it's a little bit of good luck where
you don't have to, you know, put the ball of
harms away. You know, I think our offensive coordinator, coach Nangle,
does a good job making sure there're plays that you
have a minimal risk to them as far as a
turnover is concerned. And then we're doing a good job
of taking the ball away, you know, you call them takeaways,
(02:14:26):
not giveaways. And our defense might have done a pretty
darn good job. We've been close to having four or
five and each of the games, and I think we're
plus six right now in the turnover takeaway category. So
we just got to continue to keep doing that throughout
the whole season and my career as head coach, and
we've been plus one or better one ninety one percent
(02:14:48):
of our games at a lot of different levels that
I've coached at. So that's something that you know helps
your success is making sure that you want that turnover takeaway.
Speaker 2 (02:14:58):
Now, I know you had to mention and physically prepare
for three different quarterbacks. I know coach Sanders did not
announce stop until he at the very last second, but
was I'm going to assume your kids were not surprised
because there was some game tape on him.
Speaker 10 (02:15:13):
Yeah, there is a game tape on him. And you know,
unless it's just completely and totally different, you know, skill
sets with the quarterbacks, you're going to get the same offense.
Maybe you might run one guy a little bit more
than the other, or maybe there's a certain paths the
guys a little bit better than the other guys at
(02:15:33):
but you know, by large, you're going to get the
you know, the same style offense. So we just worked
on what they'd done the first two games and had
an idea that the stop kid might start, and he did,
and you know, our kids did a good job adapting Jim.
Speaker 2 (02:15:49):
Connor gave you two hundred and twenty two yards to
the air, eighty three on the ground of the eighty
three is a career high for him? Is that something
you want to see more of, not necessarily to the yards,
but just the ability to say, you know what, I
can take off if needed.
Speaker 10 (02:16:03):
Yeah, we're gonna run the quarterback every week. H you know,
the talks about it many times. It's just when you
play eleven at eleven football, you got a better chance
of being successful in the run game. When you're handed
it off to the back. Now it's a little bit
more difficult. And you know, fortunate that that Connor can
run and he's got good speed, good movement. And then
(02:16:24):
there's some times where you know everybody's covered and you
see a crease and the protection and he did that
one time as well. He took it and ran with
it and scored a touchdown. So yeah, we're we're very
fortunate we have a you know, a true due for
it quarterback now, or we're gonna run him twenty times
a game now, but we're gonna run him five to
(02:16:45):
ten times a ball game.
Speaker 2 (02:16:47):
Is that under his circumstances or are those specific play calls,
what do you think it would be more of a.
Speaker 10 (02:16:53):
Probably three or four them. We're going to be you know,
men where he touchs it and runs or you know,
either he's got pressure or you know, and there's not
a clear the receiver to throw to. But the other
ones will be called quarterback runs or option place where
you you know, you're reading somebody and it's either you know,
give the ball the back or pull it. So you know,
(02:17:13):
but yeah, we're fortunate that we've got a guy back
there that can move around.
Speaker 2 (02:17:17):
Well, you got two hundred and nine yards on the
ground two twenty two through the air. If I've talked
to one coach, they all said the same thing. We
love balance offense, and you got that against the Buffaloes.
Speaker 10 (02:17:27):
No, we want to be a fifty to fifty team.
You know, the pass opens up the run and vice versa,
and you know, if you make them, you know, have
to defend the whole field horizontally and vertically. Got a
much better chance of being successful. We think we've got
some good backs, and we've got good receivers and tight
ends and we're going to try to utilize all of them.
You know, you get into a game sometimes you have
(02:17:49):
more success than one thing to the other, and you're
smart to stick with that plan of attack. But you know,
we'd like to be a fifty to fifty team.
Speaker 2 (02:17:57):
I sometimes tease my radio audio it's about not being
able to trust college kickers, and you and I earlier
this season talked about the fact that we were seeing
more and more successful ones. Your guy five out of six.
If you can get fifteen points a game from your
college kicker like that, you're going to be in a
really good spot this year.
Speaker 10 (02:18:14):
Yeah, and a bunch of more long ones too. You know,
he was ten of eleven at Old Dominion last years.
One missed with fifty plus yards. So that's that's the
reason why we got him here. We want to be
able to, you know, get the automatic three points when
it's gonna be hard to convert on a fourth and
six or seven, whatever the case may be. Here in
that little in between fringe area, you know, right around
(02:18:36):
the plus twenty five plus thirty five yard line, and
you still got an opportunity to get points even though
the down of distance isn't good for you by kicking
the field goal. So even Sanchayz did a really nice
job of you know, kicking the last well, I guess
it was two weeks ago.
Speaker 2 (02:18:52):
Right, yep, and the best I know feel like it's
two months ago. Yeah, it does feel like that. How
do you like the early off week? You had a
chance to rest up some guys and Nix and Bruce
Is are always gonna be a part of a college
football season, But how do you feel, at least healthwise
going to this game against Oregon State?
Speaker 10 (02:19:09):
Much better? We were banged up, particularly on the offensive line.
We've got a few of those guys back now and
now they're healthy. You know, we took you know, it
took a couple of days off with the student athletes,
and we did you know, we came back on Monday
and we just really lifted during that by a week,
and practice Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and came Friday, Saturday off
(02:19:30):
and came back and started working again on Sunday because
we're actually flying out tomorrow to head out to Oregon State.
Speaker 2 (02:19:40):
So as far as Oregon State is concerned, a really
rough goal of thanks for them. They are in a
full rebuild. It feels like they also are trying to
get established back at a new conference, which will be
next year. I don't know if the travel is going
to be a huge consideration. Guys have been on plane
rides before, but just a thought or two about seeing
them having already one conference game in the books and
(02:20:00):
this being your last non conference game coming up here
on Friday.
Speaker 10 (02:20:04):
Yeah, we just you know, I've really had an opportunity
to you know, study these guys we would have in
the bye week. And you know, like I tell these
guys all the time, this is this game counts as one,
just like last week and just like next week. They
all count one York year round for these twelve guaranteed opportunities.
And you know, having this time off, we want to
(02:20:26):
be able to play the best we can. We should
be healthy. I think we've had an opportunity to you know,
figure out our squad a little bit. What guys do well,
maybe some things they don't do quite so well. They
try to stay away from that, you know, And we've
been able to do that in all all three phases
during this time off.
Speaker 2 (02:20:46):
And do you want the depth chart fluid every week
or do you like the things settled down by this
time of the year.
Speaker 10 (02:20:52):
I woul like it'd be you know, pretty close to
settle down. There's always guys that you know, continue to
keep improving during the year, and maybe they're playing five
stance and game and in another two three weeks are
playing you know, thirty stants a game. You know, sometimes
that's based on injury as well. A guy comes in
and shows what he can do and may be the
guy out. We want competition, we want depth, and we
(02:21:14):
want to know though, you know, what are the guys
who are going to be playing, not just on defense
or offense, but you know, who are the best eleven
guys on kickoff team, who the best eleven guys on
kickoff return, and who's the best eleven guys and on
third and long defensively, So you're always trying to figure
your squad out and make sure you got the right
Jimmy's and Joe's in the places where you need to
(02:21:36):
have them.
Speaker 2 (02:21:37):
Well, there will be a handsome bald guy filling in
for Jeremy on your Coaches show tonight, So I will
be seeing you in a few hours, looking forward to
hanging out with you for an hour.
Speaker 10 (02:21:47):
That sounds fantastic.
Speaker 2 (02:21:48):
Well, se everybody at Little Woodrow's anydo At about seven
o'clock tonight. Thanks coach with the visit as always all right, man,
thank you got you got it. That's Willie Fritz joining
us here and yes, the Coaches Show over in nine
to fifty KPRC will be at Little Woodrow's edo and
I will be there and I will. I mean, I
don't fall sign autographs ross, but I feel like if
people want to ask, I'll be happy to sign a
couple and put you on the big screen, big screen.
(02:22:12):
There's a big screen outside in there. I have not
been at location. I have last Yeah, last time I
was on the screen during Coaching Show was with me
and Tom Herman and we were trying to figure out
where he was going. Anyways, Texas, you should have kept him.
You don't see you don't seem upset by that. You've
moved on. Remember Texas is back. No, they're not. We'll
(02:22:36):
be after beating Florida. Believe it or not. It's highly googlable.
It's about hitting coaches. This is a good one. Forty
five Sports Talk seven ninety Thanks Sark. Hope you get
some downtime looking forward to seeing Texas and U of
H in the first round of the college football playoffs.
Would you say Ross a little little little let's see
(02:22:56):
what be I don't think the Rainbow Warriors are gonna
have a season like that, but I go, that's it
could happen. Mmm, Major League Baseball, Detroit had a ninety
nine point nine percent chance to win the AL Central
on September the tenth, ninety nine point nine this chance.
Now it's even for Cleveland. What it's Detroit's collapse. It's
(02:23:19):
not Cleveland playing out of its mine, right, I mean
Cleveland has both, it takes both, but fifteen and a
half games. Is that takes a lot of work. That's like,
if you think the Astros have been bad the last
six weeks, go look at the Troitz record. Yesh. Problem
is the Lions are really good. So the Tiger fans
even really, now that's a good baseball town. I give him,
give him that. But it looks like the Guardians have
(02:23:42):
won like eighteen of the last twenty. So they're basically
seattling the America League Central. What's the Troit's record the
last I mean, they've got to be I mean, yeah,
we'll look it up down the road. By now I
got something else something like that, all right. I don't
my exact Mathewall, well, we'll figure it the matter. That's fine.
We're in big city wings Morow by the way where
(02:24:02):
