Speaker 1 (00:00):
Lunch timers, Matt Thomas, Thomas, Ross VI Real is The
Matt Thomas Show with Ross ten O one an Age Town.
Good morning, and welcome to a Thursday edition to The
Matt Thomas Show with Ross. This is Sports Talk seven.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
And then.
Speaker 1 (00:34):
The Seattle Mariners meet the Chicago White Sox and ROSSI
going on ourselves a good old fashioned Pennant race, the
fight of the finish as the Astros lee the American
League West shaved to two games. It's going to be
(00:57):
a battle, Matt down to the wire. But I would say,
I think it's still an ongoing battle. Don't make that
face of me. Hey, I don't need Hall and Oaths
to kiss and make up? Why because I want them
to go back on tour. I'd go back and watch them.
I thought it was all Hall or is it all Oats?
Well it's together, yeah, but who did the book? Yeah,
(01:19):
Darryl Hall did most of the same. Okay, yeah, well
and beat it Oats, You beat your Oats terrible forty
seconds into the show and the obligatory laugh from like,
that's what we should have that not on a sound sound,
(01:40):
just the old like if we think a joke's gonna
fall flat or our attempted humor. We just hit that
black track always works, I mean it worked for decades
in the comedy. Is there any show that uses live
tracks now? That I don't know because I don't watch
Usually most everything, most sitcoms are documentary style, like The Office. Yeah, yeah,
all right, good morning everybody. It is ten to four
(02:03):
on Sports Talk seven and it is the Matt Tommy
Show with Ross. Uh. That's Ross. I'm Matt Jonathan's our producer.
Wo what was that noise? He's just thrown stuff in there.
Woo woo woa. He's got a nervous twitch or something
back that some medications he got the two reds those
are stuff from that way. Sorry. Yes, we're wishing me
(02:24):
the best. All right, amazing awareness. So can I peel
the curtain back in my life? Yesterday?
Speaker 3 (02:29):
Yes?
Speaker 1 (02:30):
Uh? I did not realize. And this is why I
said so many nice things about WEX and I have
thirty days. It'd be nice to add him. You're counting
them down, aren't you?
Speaker 4 (02:39):
Down?
Speaker 1 (02:39):
The twenty nine. I did not realize it yesterday, and
I should have. I didn't put two or two together.
The Astros yesterday had a game at three forty first pitch.
The previous two nights were at five forty, and I
was going to do the tenth Inning show, and then
I realized that I had a We had our Kingoe
High School had their volleyball meeting, all the parents got there,
(03:00):
and my wife's involved with collecting money, so I was
helping her out. She's shaking people down, no like paying
for like uniforms and getaways and you know, prepaid lunches
and that kind of thing, show us and kneecaps threatening folks. Well,
I mean, you know her, That's what I'm saying. Why
do you think I'm asking? There's a definite possibility of
that down the road for sure. So I was going
(03:21):
to miss part of the meeting, and I didn't want
to do that because I'm was trying to help her out.
So I said, I texted we because I said, hey,
can you do the tenth I think show? And he
gladly did it wonderful. So the meeting ends at about
I don't know, just shy at seven o'clock and he's
on the show talking about the game and breaking it
all down and playing highlights like a good host does
I mean, I don't know if Adam Klant would be
(03:42):
know how to run that format of the show. But
that's a different issue for a different time. They had
a call and I had Josh c send me the call,
and I was thinking about playing it on the show today,
but I need I need an intervention, and I think
I'm going to get my own self intervention on this.
You're gonna self intervene. That's good, I guess. The guy
(04:04):
called up and I've heard the guys. I've heard his
voice before because it's a very distinctive voice, and it
was from the moment I heard his voice, I thought
this is going to be a wretched phone call, and
it was. He said, I know, I think Joe's probably
a pretty good coach, but he's not he's not a
good manager. Huh. That's actually not dumb to have that.
(04:28):
I mean to phrase it that way. It's not a
good opinion, but it's a horrific opinion. The Astros are
in first place. They've had ninety five different lineups. Yes,
they've got double digit injured list players. The number one
most prolific offensive player for this team hadn't seen the
field since May. You've lost I don't know forty percent
of your sorry lineup, You've lost forty percent of your rotation.
(04:49):
You've had to go with a blue ball, You've had
to go with a Gordon, You've had to go with Arrogetty,
who got hit hard. Yesh, but that's no surprise on that.
And he was just like, he says, how you sit
Jeremy Payania in this game is not a reasonable And
I'm just paraphrasing. I was yelling at my car. You
(05:09):
were yes, and wex is much more polite than I am.
I would have destroyed the guy because again, first of all,
Jeremy Paynia is back after missing well how much gamis
several weeks? Correct?
Speaker 5 (05:22):
Yes, and then the first or second game back, he
has a hams game. First game back, he has a
hamstring cramp, can't even finish the game, miss the Saturday game,
does play the Sunday game, and they played the first
two games. Then you want him ultimately to be ready
for the most important games of the series of the trip,
(05:43):
which would be the three in New York starting tomorrow.
And I thought to myself, there are too many people
that continue to believe that baseball is played like it
is in nineteen seventy four, yes where you have to
play all one sixty two.
Speaker 1 (06:03):
I know in theory that sounds like the right thing
to do. I know in theory that yesterday stars did that.
I get that. I grew up in some of that.
I watched Cal Ripkin play thousands of games in a row.
I watch Noan Ryan pitching the eleventh th any more
time than I care to think about. I understand there
(06:24):
is a mentality of well back in the day when
I first watched the game. I appreciate that because I'm
also I've got a lot of back in the day,
even me. But the reality is you must adapt with
everything in life, and that does include the player participation habits.
In twenty twenty five, I know people would love for
(06:44):
their stars to play every single day. It's a not
going to happen. Be the game is more demand than
ever has been before. The players are better, they're bigger, faster, stronger,
They're asked to do more things. And the reality is,
especially for a guy who's fresh awful week off a
missing basically a month, if I'm going to give a
day off to Jeremy Payne at some point between now
(07:05):
and the end of this road trip, it's going to
be yesterday against the Martlins. By the way, he did
have a pinch hit role, so you had him off
your bench yesterday. I'm going to use him for an
off day yesterday than I would against the Yankees, which
you wouldn't think in theory, would be a more difficult
competitive competition if Jeremy Payne you sat out one of
the Yankees games. The same defits that called the show
(07:25):
yesterday was like, what are you doing? Why are you playing?
Why are you giving Jeremy Paye your day off when
he should have had the day off in Miami? And
then people will say, well, they have an off day
today a lot of players and that this goes back
again the last twenty years. When players, especially guys that
are playing a lot, get days off, they typically get
a day off before the scheduled day off gives them
(07:47):
two full days. Now again, Jeremy played yesterday and I
actually got on the field and did pinch hit, so
it's like you got to day off though, So I've
just decided that I love hosting the Tenthening Show, and
I love talking to people of Houston, but I don't
know if I can listen to it when I'm not
hosting it because I want to get in a car wreck. Well,
(08:12):
I never listened to it when I'm not hosting it.
Is that bad? No, I think you're a playoff game
or something, right, And remember this the organization and look
it certainly has taken its bumps when it comes to
the way they medically take care of their team, whether
it's information, lack of information, current play policy, transparency, non transparency, misdiagnosis.
(08:41):
It has been a hot mess over there and that
they would never say it and I don't and I
wouldn't expect them to, but it's been lesson spectacular. But
the reality is they have sports science people, Joe A.
Spot as a manager who is with those guys every
single day. He has been with those guys every single
day since training camp began in late February. He has
(09:04):
the temperature of the team way more than Ross Phil
Riale does, way more than Matt Thomas does, and way
more than said caller. And I'm just I just have
to say, if you want to criticize, I get it,
but look at the results. Friends. Your team not playing
great baseball and has to played great baseball for basically
(09:26):
a month now, is still in first place, and those
losses with the astro has been playing by about four
hundred baseball for the last month or so. Many of
those games did include jermy opinion. Now all of them
did not as well. But if you can't beat the
Miami Mardlins after smack him around two straight days because
you need to give your guy a day off, then
(09:47):
having him take a day off in the three New
York games, then maybe your team isn't as good as
you think it is. Yeah, and here's the thing that
I always go back to is how long have we
been paying attention to the astros. I'm not saying watching
the astros. I'm saying paying attention because you mentioned Joe
A spotted doing this and Dusty Baker did this. This
(10:09):
this is not new. Not a single Astro since twenty seventeen.
I did this while you were talking about I can
go further back if we need to. Has played one
hundred and sixty two games, not a single one. It
hasn't happened. It doesn't happen. This has been happening for years.
(10:30):
And to get upset about this it tells me again
you're just not paying attention. But again I will say
that was one caller in the whole show, right, was
there people? Okay, I ask out of Wexler. Wasn't five
people up at arms about all this? Well? I put
there are people on Twitter talking about it. I think
people are in Chandler Rome and Brian mctaggers mentions as
(10:52):
they usually are, calling Joe a spot an idiot for
doing this, and it's like you're just not paying attention.
Is extremely extremely normal, and especially for someone just coming
back off an injury and who tweaked their hamstring on
Friday and sat out Saturday. Wasn't tweak. It was a cramp.
So cramp, I'm sorry, tweak you usually means something was pulled,
(11:14):
whatever the whatever words they're using now I know, but
but he was Actually he was able to go on Sunday,
so obviously it wasn't something severe. That's all I'm saying
is that I need what did they say on Seinfeld's
serenity now? Serendy now? But that doesn't work, Matt, that's
sussy the emotions down. You have to confront the emotions process.
I feel like you've been to a therapist to get
this information. I went this morning for you, talked about
(11:37):
you the whole time. Oh that's terrible. You've been terrorizing
me for too long. Have any of you listened to us?
Any of you gone to the show, gone to a
therapists because of me? Seven one three to while you
raised to put that left hand down? Meetings, We actually
have meetings. Hi, my name is Ross and I've known
Matt for sixteen years, so sorry, Hey uss, Hey my
(12:02):
name is Ross and I work with Matt Hi Ross. Hey, Ross,
Well we all know each other. It was like a
group meeting, right, that's what I'm saying. Yeah, you're support moroupe.
Y'all can blame Tommy. That's fine. Oh I deserve it.
Seven one three two one too little doll of you?
What with an aluminum bat? Yeah, that's what we say.
(12:23):
You would strike me with a bat? No, it's a
luminium all of you, not you. It's quite cathartic. I'm hurt.
Seven one three two one two five seven nintie seven
one three bring this doll to tier, bringing tomorrow, I
want to. That's pretty ravage. We gotta order a new one.
Oh it's been beat up that bad. Yeah, that's terrible.
Seven one three two one two five seven Ninni the
(12:45):
worst part is things are getting closer in the American
League West. Bad news from the Texans. I'll have that
for you next ten to fifteen on Sports Talk seven Nintie.
All right, breaking news, sounder, let's hit it. Yeah, we
got hold on the way that you're saying, yep is
not good. Hit it again? Are you serious? One more time? No?
(13:10):
Are you double serious? That's three? What's the max? Five? Yes?
One more? Your nun's out for the year. No, it's
about the Texans. Oh okay. M Mix and surgery. Texan
(13:31):
safety CJ. Gardner Johnson cart it off right leg injury.
He got hurt tackling John Metchi in major pain evidently
and could not put weight on it. He is inside
with trainers next stop MRI practices origion. That's from Aaron Wilson,
and we will try to check in with him sometime
in the next couple of hours. Yes, so he goes.
(13:53):
He goes on to say, uh, looks serious. Appears to
him be his knee, feel his silent prayers up. Players
are all taking a knee. Okay, ooh, I just got
fake shifter. Be careful at their folks. Mute I'm muting that.
Speaker 2 (14:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (14:10):
By the the the sham's fake account. You want to
get rid of the shifter, You want to block, mute
all of them. Well I block. I just don't even
changing him on the on the page, So mute, block,
whatever the case may be. Okay, this is four I
would think, So okay, maybe he's all right. Maybe a
little twisted the knee. When do players go down on
(14:32):
a knee and you go, oh, he'll be fine? Uh
happened to Cam Robinson. They didn't go on a knee
for him. There's no chance. They din'tven know who he is. Well, well,
well that's not good news. They were scrimmaging, by the way,
gonna happen. This is the nature of football camp. Injuries
(14:56):
happened to teams all over the absolutely every year. Yeah, yep,
damn man. And he was looking from what I read,
he was looking to try to actually stay somewhere for
more than a year. Hm, that's not gonna happen. If
he's done for the year here, well maybe it's more
likely to happen. You gotta get a little prove it deal.
(15:17):
Oh yeah, you know what? Uh what's his face? You
know who loves proved deals? He loves Yeah, going to
be on this station later today, correct, I believe tomorrow,
No today, three o'clock. Car I think y'all awesome at
Texans GM. When's the last time the Texans general manager
was on the station? Uh? I interviewed Rick Smith many
(15:38):
moons ago, years and years ago. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
So that's good. I mean, uh, I'd rather hear from Dimiko.
But then, you know, you get you get what you get.
You don't throw a fit text week's still the general
manager if we're used in Texans. Do you think he's
gonna do the A team at three forty five about this?
Do you think he'll do the interview today? Knowing that
we don't know about CJ. Carner Johnes, Yeah, you know,
(15:59):
we're waiting for more information on that obviously. CJ. Gardner
Johnson a big part of what we wanted to do
this year. Great player, good family man, good locker room guy.
Has really been a leader on and off the field
for us. So an unfortunate loss. Like I said, we're
kind of waiting to see how long he's going to
be out. In the meantime, it's a next man up
(16:19):
mentality and we're just gonna have to push forward. Do
you think he even does the interview? I think he
think he calls it off and I wouldn't think so,
I would hope not. I mean we now maybe a CJ.
Stroud's arm fell off. Yeah, he's got Kang Green in there.
We're gonna have to figure something out because Davis Mills
is not very good. So I've done a few of
these shows over the years. As of you, when you
(16:40):
get card off on a cart, the chance of return,
I will say non zero. I can't remember specific names,
but guys have gotten carted off and then everybody everything
blew over. But you said the whole team was taking
a knee, correct. Okay, all right, let me rephrase percentage
of players that when you're doing knee, when you sprinkle
a little team taking a knee on top, that's when
(17:00):
it gets pretty bad. The guys are crying and doing
the sign of the Cross. That not good. When when
the pope comes in, Yeah, I don't think that's the case.
Somebody's reading the last rites. No, they're not doing that.
That's good. You're not that bad, all right, Uh okay,
(17:22):
so help me out of here. Yeah, you're taking all
an e he's making a jay hook. With one of
his legs. That's not good. Jane Jalen Reid got hurt
in camp a little bit. Jimmy Ward is out.
Speaker 6 (17:35):
C J.
Speaker 1 (17:35):
Garner Johnson, that's a I mean, whoever this m J.
Stewart is you know what you know, Causario may not
be availab because he's gonna go out. He's gotta go
out get some street free agents or some sort. Well,
you always have a lot of bodies in camp for
these types of situations. Yeah, okay, So Aaron Wilson's gonna
(17:55):
join us later today once the media availability and now again,
my guess is COI is just gonna say we don't
know he's in there. You know you got he there? Yeah,
is not gonna give us anything because that's his momo. No, No,
I don't even think he could have any I mean,
they're gonna know something in five hours. I'm not gonna
do something the next timey minutes.
Speaker 2 (18:11):
So well.
Speaker 1 (18:21):
We'll see. We're waiting. See moo. Matt Man, you scared
the hell out of me. You went to four. I
thought you're did I go over the line. I thought
he put his hand in a meeting. I think I
starting safety for a team. That's a super Bowl caliber defense.
Oh now, okay, now I'm questioning myself. You gotta recalibrate.
Five is nuclear war? When did the last time I
(18:42):
did a five came back? Okay, we've done it something
since then, have we not?
Speaker 7 (18:46):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (18:46):
Durant, Durant was a five star, was a five star. Yeah,
get the one of the greatest shooters and scores to
ever walk the planet in the Houston Rockets. I apologize
for giving you one too many sounders. That's okay, We're
always calibrating. Matt C. J. Stroud hurt, that's fine. Kymie
fair is an ankle injury. That's like three, Kymie Fairburn,
Kymie Fairburn. Demko says it's a five. That's his guy.
(19:10):
That is his guy. Want to go ahead and send
in Kymie? All right? Uh hey, coach, it's four and
two on the forty six. What are we doing here?
Sending the kick team? Let's go, coach, fan Burn's got
a twelve percent chance of making this sixty three yard
field golf beginning.
Speaker 4 (19:27):
Get it.
Speaker 1 (19:27):
We're indoors snow wind. Let's go. That's fine. It's just
it's just wired in the DNA of the defensive coaches. Yeah,
we doubt take points. All right. I don't really know
much to say except we're gonna when Aaron joins us,
he'll be able to just go it. You know. I
don't know, but that's uh, that's not what you want
to hear, especially for a category. And we'll get more
(19:49):
on this. Aaron sounds like the safe you to depth
chart is the one that the least depth. Yeah, I
would wonder. Yeah, who do you even have that could
be out there in that type of role? Well, Aaron's
gonna have to satries more of a a close to
the line of scrimmage type of safety. Yeah. Mm, by way,
(20:11):
I'm getting already. What's your favorite? CJ Gardner Johnson's the
Texan moment e tweets coming in? Jimmy Ward is just old?
Is he in legal trouble too? Am I getting that one?
Speaker 2 (20:23):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (20:23):
I think you're right, Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's wasn't he
arrested in Magnolio the Okay, so I'm giving you so
let me here. Here's what I've done. We've done the
first half hour. We had the Astros losing. Yes, we
have the Mariners winning, the Yankees, you beat the Rangers. Yesterdays.
That was nice, Thank you Yankees for once Jesus. But
the Astros leads a two game sports RV. I'm feeling nervous.
(20:45):
All right, next segment of the show good news only. Okay,
so we have to carry a ten minute segment coming up,
Good news only if you have any good news? Oh,
I have some great news. Is it your better your
personal life, nor your athletic accomplishments in life? Which I
(21:06):
peaked athletically at eleven? Jonathan, what's your forty time? These days?
Forty time? You don't ever ask the track runner what
you what's your one hundred time? Then I'll ask whatever
it is? Well, I fastest I ever ran because that
was a four hundred unners. The fastest I ran is
at ten six. Tame with me too, ironically enough? Yeah,
it's crazy neck and neck with Matt. It's like I
(21:27):
Matt means, Matt means ten minutes and six seconds. Don't
let me finish my own jokes. Oh you're gonna do that. Yeah,
I'll walk out of here. I'll talk to you all
this all right, ladies and gentlemen, we need some good news,
you know. We'll open up to beyond sports I've got
great news. If you hold on. If you got a
promotion at work yesterday, then call us and tell us,
because what we've done is clinically depressed the city of Houston.
(21:50):
For the first half hour of the show, seven one,
three seventy. If you got lucky last night, that's good news.
Does it counterfeit your wife, Well, it's a bonus if
it's your wife, or maybe in some case you hate
your wife or somebody else. What if it's your mistress,
What if it's just you know, if it's uh, if
you had a blind date last night it really went well,
that'd be great. Do people go on blind dates? I
(22:12):
was just gonna ask you all that there's no such thing.
At the very least you're you're stocking them on Google
or Facebook. Oh yeah, you're you're ig stalking for sure.
All right, So give we need a good news segment here,
because we're giving you is nothing but terrible in this
for the first thirty minutes. All right, Ross, I got
a little bit of good news in the scrimmage today,
(22:32):
mister Yeast with an interception of Davis Mills. Russ Yeast,
Russ Yeast, the goat. We are your official home of
Rush East. Russ are Uss Now are U s t
Russ East? We call him rusty, No, nobody calls him rusty,
not grandmother. Oh you're rusty No Rusty Wallace. Yeah, but
(22:54):
that's not Rusty Yeast Russ Yeast with an I N
T during a scrimmage today. Good for him. If Ross
Yeast makes the team, we're gonna have him on the show.
He will rise to the occasion. What was your good news, Ross,
(23:16):
I have some great news.
Speaker 4 (23:17):
Matt.
Speaker 1 (23:18):
This is involved in putting money in my pocket. Yes, okay,
No it doesn't. Oh dang. Did you hear what Archie
Manning had to say in Texas Monthly magazine? Matt, Archie,
this is grandpa? Yes, okay. He says he does not
believe that arch Manning will be declaring for the twenty
(23:39):
twenty six in FL draft. He said he's not had
conversations with arch However, knowing his grandson, he has an
idea what he will do regardless of what happens this year,
this next year. Quote, arch isn't going to do that.
He'll be at Texas. So what is what's the good
news in that? I don't care. I'm not a Texas fan.
What do you mean great news because of what? Well,
(24:01):
because I was right. I told you he's not going
for We were talking about him taking the Saints tanking
to get him number one overall in the draft. What
if he sucks, you'll want him out of there. I
don't think he's going to suck. I don't think so either.
He could ask some growing paints. He's just a red
shirt sophomore. Look, the bottom line is this, the nil
has become elite player's best friend. They have a fantastic alternative,
(24:25):
I would say, and he would be. I mean, especially
if he's a really good quarterback. He's top of the heat.
The name recognition, name recognition. You're in one of the
most recognizable college programs in America. You're on national TV,
on the biggest network at probably six o'clock every Saturday night.
Does anybody does any college singular college athlete or at
(24:45):
least college football player have a higher earning potential than
arch Manning. Well, I'll do this, and I'm not as
Let me ask you this, who is the second most
famous college football player right this second? I don't even
have a answer. Free I couldn't even tell you. M
M but yeah, Chris Gordy Cook, But yeah, I be
(25:06):
Beck from the transferred from Georgia to Miami. Maybe Carson Beck.
Carson Beck probably well, ask Fordy this, that's a good
question for Cordy's gonna come in a few minutes. Okay, great,
So yeah, Jeremiah Smith, wide receiver, Ohio State, You're you're
wincing that is that that's not that doesn't make you
Maybe it makes him recognizable, but that's to make him,
like wow, recognizable. No, that's the point is if you're
(25:29):
gonna put serious money behind somebody, well, first of all,
you're doing it because you want to take care of him,
and you love Texas. If you're if you're an LSU fan,
you don't care that Arch Manning is the most recognizable
college athlete you wanted to leave. But yeah, if you're Texas,
you're like, yeah, I can actually get a little bit
of value back from my return. You put Arch Manning
(25:50):
on a TV commercial, you'll know it. You put some
rando linebacker from old miss On and like, who the
hell is that? So yeah, but if he sucks, well,
how about I wonder again, how much of it is
going to be on what team gets it no matter.
If he's going to be a top five pick, he's
gonna go somewhere. That's terrible. Question. Is is he going
(26:11):
to pull what his uncle Eli did and say I'm
not going to the San Diego Chargers. I don't think so,
but we'll see. I mean, it depends. I guess it
depends on the situation. Can he do that? He his
uncle did it? Well, yeah, but he was also the
last one to do that. It was twenty one years ago. Okay,
so are you ready to make a Okay, if the
(26:33):
if the Saints are the number one pick, you think
he'll turn that down. I don't know, we'll make a bet.
Oh my god, no, because I don't know. But I
think he's staying at Texas well. I mean, obviously, if
my guess is that Archie has a good idea what
his grandson's doing, he would have said that half cocked
(26:53):
and he would just I don't think so either. But
he didn't transfer out. He would have if a queen
you were answer out like I told you, and you
said he was because Quinn you weers went to the
NFL and made a massive business decision that wasn't good
for him. He could have stay at Texas mad money,
or gone somewhere else. If I was yours, I'd have
gone somewhere else and collected some Mentao money. He'd be
the second most recognized with a player in college football,
(27:14):
and take that right now. Probably right now, he's just
a rando. So he's still at Texas, and I think
he's gonna stay there, and you're happy about it. I
think so. And when he throws four picks against ohiose sate,
you won't be nearly as policed. Well, we'll see, and
you know what I told you. Excuse me, I will
say I'm not too bad. I said this is a
good news segment.
Speaker 2 (27:30):
I bad.
Speaker 1 (27:31):
Yeah, No, it's okay. You're a hater. No, I'm not
a used to it. I'm just a realist. They come in,
mister reality, Gary in Parland. What's your good news?
Speaker 8 (27:41):
The good news is that after twenty eight years, I
have moved from Parland to Bringham, Texas.
Speaker 2 (27:48):
But the great news is seven ninety comes in loud
and clear.
Speaker 1 (27:52):
Oh God love you, you're you, God love you.
Speaker 2 (27:55):
I get to hear them Stross, oh rockets.
Speaker 1 (28:00):
Hey, heyst Year, that is literally on the call. Hey,
come on now, Gary, come on, Gary, you is such
a good phone call for a minute.
Speaker 2 (28:09):
Yeah, my son spent twelve years NBA.
Speaker 1 (28:12):
So your son did in the NBA. What was he doing?
Speaker 2 (28:16):
Yes, he was senior vice president.
Speaker 1 (28:20):
Of marketing for the Rockets, for other team, all for the.
Speaker 2 (28:25):
NBA, for the whole NBA, for the whole NBA.
Speaker 1 (28:29):
Yeah, damn dude, that's that. You should be very proud of.
What's he doing now?
Speaker 8 (28:34):
He works for a company called sports Fly sport Fly
if you don't know what that is. That's the biggest,
dudes there is in IL. They just signed A and
M to the largest contract for the next seven years,
I believe and A and M will pay them one
hundred and fifty million dollars.
Speaker 1 (28:53):
A and M's going to pay this company called sports Fly. Yeah, yeah,
that was a big deal. If you're talking about last
year or not last year, Yeah, it was a while ago.
Speaker 2 (29:04):
He's the guru.
Speaker 1 (29:06):
If you I'm sorry, playfly that's what it was. No,
is it sports fly or play play that's undu familiar. Yeah,
because playfly is actually a company. Thank you for the
phone call.
Speaker 2 (29:18):
That does.
Speaker 1 (29:19):
They sell all the advertising, they sell advertise and they
do everything.
Speaker 2 (29:22):
Well.
Speaker 1 (29:23):
Good for Gary's sun is actually very famous. Playfly is
making a lot of waves in the old sports marketing world.
Good friend, Thanks Gary, appreciate you listening. Thank you Gary,
Thanks for bringing us the good news. He loves, he
loves the Astros, he loves the Matt and Ross show.
And it's the Rockets. Rockets are great. It gonna be
(29:43):
great this year. Can't wait. We have more earballs listening
to you than ever before. Matt, I better not screw
up this year, gotten away with it in the past.
Can't make mistakes this year and today what's been a
bunch of off the cuff weird references with Adam playing
at the end of games and at the end of blowouts.
Perhaps Hello Anthony.
Speaker 6 (30:01):
Hey, good afternoon, guys, hey, or good morning.
Speaker 1 (30:03):
Excuse me.
Speaker 6 (30:04):
My good news is the Mariners are breathing down the
astros neck. But they like to do this thing where
they get the division lead and then they couldn't hit
water if they though out of a boat. And since
twenty seventeen, the Astros are one hundred and nineteen and
sixty four in September, So death taxes and the Astros
winning the Al West, it's going to happen again this year.
Speaker 1 (30:26):
That's the good news. That's the future. Good news.
Speaker 2 (30:29):
Great, that's great news.
Speaker 1 (30:31):
That's more division lead. Well, news is reporting something that happened.
Speaker 2 (30:38):
Your Crows are winning the AL West.
Speaker 6 (30:39):
It's happening.
Speaker 1 (30:40):
You heard him, he just said it. Well that's a
good prediction, Anthony, Thank you. That was a great prediction.
He could have called and said, I think the Astros
are gonna lose by five games in this last news
cheap You are so literal, kinda have rules in this
life of ours, Matt, what kind of rules were This
is ten forty three in a minut day sports radio shows. Okay,
(31:01):
I'm sorry, it is the news. The Astros have won
the AL West. Great news. I didn't stutter when I
said it a month ago. I know how you feeling,
though you might be stuttering now. I don't feel so
well at this point. But that's a different issue for
a different time. All right. Yeah, I'm just still winning
it because again, you know what I got in my
back pocket, your backs and angels, the calls it the
(31:24):
year on the road. Well, you know, how's the weakest,
weakest schedule of the two remaining you are don't even
look at the schedule monitor. That's bad. That's bad. I'll
give you. The good news is the Astros have one
of the weakest schedules remaining in baseball. Right, I will
call that good news. I don't care what y'all say.
I have a they have above five hundred record against
teams below five hundred. All right, we just gave you
(31:46):
some good news. Let's come back to the bad news.
What bad news spikes good? No, you wait till next segment.
Bad news spikes sports radio better. I know you're right,
Am I wrong? I know you're right? Hey, Astros. I
did the Friday, Saturday Sunday tenth inning shows. I had
like fifty calls in three days. Yeah, I made Wain
nine to one over the Cardinals. Three. Have you seen
(32:06):
the local news like seventeen murders before they get to
the feel good story of some kind of I don't know,
cat Shelter, some eighty year old bity celebrating a birthday. Yeah,
graduate from high school. He's one hundred and three. What's
the key to life? Gladys? Speaking of that real quick again,
I told you the other day, I'm obsessed with the
ais and the old couples getting together, and they're yeah,
(32:30):
it's it's sophomoric. I fully admit it. That's okay, and
I apologize, embrace it. But it's funny because I sent
them to all my friends and they crack up. They're like,
oh my god, they're giving you like courtesy, laugh emotion.
No no no, no no, no, no no no. Because
if you send something to somebody and they don't respond
to give you like give it a little thumbs up
on there.
Speaker 4 (32:49):
No, no, no.
Speaker 1 (32:49):
If you if you send something to somebody and they
don't respond to you, it's they just don't have an
opinion about it, like you, Why did you waste my time?
And why didn't I have to go look at my phone?
Like in your case, I send you text all the
time takes you days. That's not true. The last text
I sent to you by yourself, it took your thirty
six hours of responsey the Gambit member, I told you
(33:10):
that that was That was a full thirty six No,
this is when you were coming back from the bathroom.
I have responded to that one. Ten forty No, you didn't.
Ten forty six is the Matt Thomas Show. Would ross uh,
mctagart's gonna be with us tomorrow. Let's see Saturday. Yeah,
it was a good No, I wasn't thirty six hours.
This is about twenty eight twenty eight hours between text.
(33:33):
You sent it in the morning. I was se tomorrow.
You can't send it when I'm sleeping. It was like
eleven o'clock in the morning. Yeah, I was asleep on
a Saturday.
Speaker 2 (33:41):
All I hear.
Speaker 1 (33:42):
His excuse is Matt, honestly, Saturday, thank you on a Saturday.
I was asleep. I just don't get it coming up
in forty five minutes, right, all right, question we pose
to Gordy. He doesn't know it because he wasn't listening.
You're listening, all right? If Arch Manning now, don't you
don't use your sec bias. This is your college football
(34:03):
somewhat expertise.
Speaker 2 (34:04):
I think.
Speaker 1 (34:06):
If Arch is the most recognizable college football player in
the country today, who is number two? You seeing? It's
not an easy answer, is it most recognizable?
Speaker 3 (34:19):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (34:19):
Because Arch can crush in an il you that'd be
money well spent. If you were a company and said, hey,
I want to put some money in Arch to say
at Texas if he stays there after this show.
Speaker 9 (34:29):
Well, the new NCAA video game when you load it up,
the first two faces you see are Jeremiah Smith from
Ohio State and Ryan Williams, the freshman. They were both
freshmen last year wide receiver at Alabama. So those two
guys I think will become because they they're both heading
into their true sophomore seasons. We're going to see them
for a whole another year. Ibis should we? And they
have an answer yet, But I don't know. Drew Aller
(34:52):
at Penn State, Carson Beck at Miami, Eric Lessmyer from
l s U was growing a little bit more.
Speaker 1 (35:00):
Never heard of him. Nobody in La kW sagarian Nes
Myris not a soul. Nobody outside of Louisiana knows what
he is.
Speaker 10 (35:06):
Yeah, I mean Colorado you had Shador and Travis Hunter
and they're both gone.
Speaker 1 (35:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 9 (35:10):
Yeah, But even cam Ward at Miami wasn't like a household.
Oh I know what that guy looks like.
Speaker 1 (35:15):
I mean the least hype number one pick ever, Right, guys.
Speaker 9 (35:18):
You know who who's kind of under sneaky, underrated, Diego
Pavia at Vanderbilt.
Speaker 10 (35:23):
Last year.
Speaker 1 (35:24):
I think, oh I got a name for you. Connor
Wigman will be the two guy in America now you're
just sounding what ridiculous? Okay, I was looking for the
nicest word possible for a second. Okay, thank you.
Speaker 9 (35:37):
I'm trying to think of like the bit because even
Oregon's gonna have a new quarterback, Like yeah, I mean
it's you have a lot of newness around the world
of college football kid club Nika Clemson. But I don't
think you know what he looks like when you see
his face. But it's Arch and the number whoever number
two is is off the map and it's Arching.
Speaker 1 (35:57):
It's everybody else. Yeah, what do you think about Arch
Mannings comments that he's going to stay at Texas.
Speaker 9 (36:02):
Yeah, but I've been hearing that for over a year now.
People can tell me that I've been trying to tell
that's a no dub. But here's the only thing the
caveat here. If Texas wins ten eleven games, they make
the playoffs, and then let's just say, win the national
championship and he wins the Heisman.
Speaker 1 (36:18):
I don't care what happens.
Speaker 10 (36:19):
I think he's gone. I think you can't do any
better than that.
Speaker 9 (36:23):
That means beautiful, But this isn't a financial thing like
he's the Mannings are set money, and then even if
he comes back for another year, the nil deals he
could get. So yeah, barring just a year of superb excellence,
I think he's coming.
Speaker 1 (36:37):
Back for another year.
Speaker 9 (36:41):
Can't wait now here. Here's my prediction. I've been saying
this all offseason. I think arts this year is good,
not great. I think he's great in twenty twenty six.
Speaker 1 (36:52):
I think that makes it.
Speaker 10 (36:53):
I think maybe like a nine.
Speaker 1 (36:54):
And three season.
Speaker 10 (36:56):
They have a couple of tough games all the row, he.
Speaker 9 (36:58):
Throws some picks in Georgia or on the road. But
I think we look back at the end of the year,
we go it was a really good first year. But
here's what sucks. What sucks is we're in a narrative
driven business in sports talk radio, in sports world. What's
gonna happen when they go up and lose the opener
house statement, But what's the headline going to be? Arch overrated? Well,
that's just overrated. It's like, no, they went and played
(37:20):
one of the top teams.
Speaker 1 (37:21):
On the road. I think it depends on how the
game plays out. I mean, yeah, if he throws for
three hundred yards and three touchdowns and they lose, or
if he has a key. Yeah, it can.
Speaker 10 (37:29):
They're gonna spind it arch good but not good enough.
I know, you know what I mean.
Speaker 1 (37:35):
We'll see right here.
Speaker 9 (37:39):
But if he has a four thousand yard season and
they're undefeated and they go to the playoffs and all this,
I think there's a chance to go.
Speaker 1 (37:48):
Yeah, it would take us out of that. And as
mad As laid out, if it's like if if all
that happens and the Saints are the number one team,
then then I could see him going out. But there's
just no financial reason, not no financi injuries, but there's
not a huge financial incentive for him to leave Texas.
What about that and the Manning family, You can already
Eli played all four years, Peyton Manning played all four years.
(38:09):
He's already not transferred. You can already tell that. Cooper
sat him down and said, Hey, you're a Manning. You're
not going to be hitting the transfer portal fifty times.
You're going to go to school. You're gonna choose the
school that's right for you.
Speaker 9 (38:19):
Well, you read about the upbringing where like exactly couldn't
have a cell phone in his room at night and
to charge at Mama Dah.
Speaker 1 (38:26):
He's marching to it. They're doing stuff old school with him.
But I'll say this though, if he's one dash one,
there's no amount of money the nil can give him
that's going to match one dash one and he'll know that.
Speaker 10 (38:38):
But he'll be one dash one the next year.
Speaker 1 (38:39):
You don't know that for sure. Probably, Yeah, there's no guarantee,
a likelihood. Andrew luck was going to be one dash
one and then he stayed at Stanford and he came
back and he was the one dash one because he
was he was also thought of as a generational prospect.
I'm not saying arch is there yet.
Speaker 9 (38:52):
Well, somebody told me they think in the twenty twenty
seven draft it will be DJ Lagway one Arch Manning too.
Speaker 1 (39:00):
That's why one. But then again, what's the difference between
one dash one and one dash to contract? And then
factoring and it does does he make enough in in
il to offset that? You know what we gotta think
about it is we just we have to not think
about the money because he doesn't need it. No, Uh,
it's gonna be about local problem. Is you just again,
(39:21):
if you are a one dash one one dash too,
you're not gonna be able to go. Oh this sounds attractive.
I'll go here, He's they're gonna be going somewhere where
he's got to run for his life. New Orleans needs
a quarterback. The Raiders need a quarterback, right or is
Geno Smiths gonna be the answer that.
Speaker 10 (39:36):
How did you buy in?
Speaker 9 (39:37):
The dumbass as answer your own question? Dumb ask Colin
cow heard a few weeks scusive.
Speaker 1 (39:41):
Oh he's a part of the the iHeart family. You
say that horrible?
Speaker 11 (39:45):
He said.
Speaker 9 (39:45):
The has Looms are close with Sabin and the Mannings.
The Browns are gonna tank and they're gonna hire Sabin
with the guarantee that Arch is gonna go number one
to them and it's gonna be Arch manning in Cleveland
with Nick Saban, coach.
Speaker 1 (39:59):
He said it was widely not There was no way
Colin would have said that absolutely out.
Speaker 10 (40:10):
We played the audio wretched.
Speaker 1 (40:12):
All right, Gordon, what are you doing this weekend?
Speaker 9 (40:15):
This Saturday? Are friends over Carbock Brewing. They're doing an
official Astros watch party. It will be you'll have Orbit,
you'll have the Shooting Stars, you'll have the World Series trophies,
and you'll have a chance to win one of those
exclusive limited Hoppadillo Astros hats.
Speaker 1 (40:32):
It is really cool.
Speaker 9 (40:33):
If you have not seen the pictures that tweeted them
out on my Twitter account. But it's gonna be fun.
It's a it's a daytime Astros game one oh five,
first pitch here local, So nice little afternoon out there
at Carbock out in the beer garden. Of course you
got the covered patios. The big fans got umbrellas, so
uh again it'll be warm, but it'll be fun with
all the family and again come come out and you
(40:54):
can take pictures with Orbit, the World Series trophies, the
Shooting Stars. Gonna be a lot of fun out there Carbock.
Bring this Saturday and official Astros watch party.
Speaker 1 (41:02):
Thank you very much. We got again. If you missed
the headline on the Texans, will give you that. Plus
if you want to talk about the Astros performance yesterday
and those Seattle Mariners are not going away, we'll discuss
that next ten to fifty nine on Sports Talk seven ninety.
It is eleven two on Sports Talk seven ninety. It
(41:24):
is our number two of the Mount of Thomas Show
with Ross. We normally have Brian McTaggart in the spot,
but he is traveling as we speak, so we will
talk with him tomorrow and tomorrow's show we'll be live
from Tyer Brewing ten thirty three Imperial Boulevard in Sugarland.
We'll have some Astros tickets. We're gonna have some golf
passes to giveaway. Ross and I will be there signing autographs.
(41:46):
The Sausage onion pizza is spectacular, the brews are fantastic,
and rossill plays a pick a ball with you, well,
probably right after the show. Not true, not playing pick
a ball one hundred and ten degree heat. It is
pretty hot, but you know it's a completely covered with
like a little missing stations. No, I'm good then, okay, Uh,
(42:07):
tomorrow's game is not on television, so if you want
to watch the game, you should go out the Tiger
Brewing and catch the rappele Rev feed. Oh, I got
to cancel my trial. So that's what that's what you do.
You you subscribe and unbscribe every every time the astros
are on. No, you can't do it week to week.
I can't do it again today. So you're not gonna
(42:27):
watch the game? Figure some skip it. Figure the out
one hundred and sixty two. You're fill other way. Oh,
you're go go to the illegal streams with the porn
bots and stuff. Okay, yeah, you're your cam girl, gave
me a link? Who did you're cam girl? Stop? All right? Uh?
The big issue of the day c J. Gardner Johnson
(42:48):
Texas day God John Texans safety hurt today at Texans
practice at UH in West Virginia.
Speaker 12 (42:56):
UH.
Speaker 1 (42:56):
We will try to get some clarification from the coaches
when they visit and they get wrap up in a
few minutes. Aaron Wilson is there for a Channel two
and doesn't work with us occasionally, so we're going to
talk with him coming up in a few minutes. He
was there to see CJ. Garner Johnson go down. These
were taken according to those on site, and went right
(43:20):
to the card. Did not you know, didn't try to
stand up, walk on anything like that. He went right
to the card. So if you know, you know, which
is not a good situation on that, especially for a
situation where that position is beset by suspensions and or injuries.
So Aaron will give us more details on the depth
chart how severe it is. And I mean again, I
don't expect the Texans to say anything about the situation
(43:43):
because it literally happened about an hour ago. So unless
they have the world's best MRI people there probably hard
to be figuring out what happens. They could, they did,
They should based on those commercials I see all the time. No,
don't you usually from death totist. Don't you typically let
the swallowing go down first before you do the m R.
I probably yes, from someone who toward the last year. Hey,
(44:05):
when you hear them, you did you have an MRI
on that?
Speaker 2 (44:07):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (44:08):
I had multiple. You don't have to put your head
through the thing. Do you now that one is lower extremities?
You got your your but you might as well get
a full body skin, right, Yeah? I think you know what? No,
I think the first time as we did the whole thing.
I had one MRI in my life. It was one
of the worst experiences of my entire life. Why because
I'm a little claustrophobic, and until I realized that restless
(44:30):
lot claustrophobic, you get the restless leg syndrome, and so
not only is it claustrophobic, but it's a lot of noise.
They give you these headphones to listen to music, but
you can't put on a Little Man alone.
Speaker 10 (44:44):
Just chill out.
Speaker 1 (44:45):
I wish now, let me ask you this, and I'm
I'm I'm asking this because of ignorance. Can they give
you something just to put you, like to not to sleep,
but just to really relax. Wait, not euthanize it. And
I don't want to I don't want to die. Sorry,
I'm sorry anesthetize you whatever. Yeah, that was weird. You
know what I meant? Anesthesia? Yeah, like if I I'm
(45:07):
not a gummy user, but with a couple of gummies
helping the situation out a little bit or maybe yeah,
that's what I'm saying. Maybe I'm forgetting even more. They
called you gummy Thomas, because what they say is if
you move in this thing, they got to start all over.
And I'm like, oh, hell, so I got it out,
but it just and then the open MRI is a
scam too. It's just open to the side. It's not
really it's not like you feel like you're in a scammed. Yeah.
(45:31):
They're also more expensive too. And then the guy that
had the chain on it got sucked in by the
MRI machine. That's not a great little and a goodal story. Yeah,
one good thing. You took it off your piece and chain. Yeah,
like a twenty pound chain on them though. Yeah. Do
you think he went in that room without anybody saying
anything or somebody just committed malpractice or what I mean
(45:53):
somebody had No, I didn't make any sense. Where was this?
Was this in America? Yes, they had to. Haven't been
a explained to him? Somebody had. I mean, if you
work at an MRI procedure exactly, it's gonna be like
the first thing you learned after turning the power on. Yeah, right,
you turned power this is yes, beautifully explain the Matthew
rule one, turn the power on, rule two, take your
(46:14):
jewelry off? Yeah? Everything, Yeah, but yes, you're you're in
there butt ass naked. No, okay, you said everything. Well,
I mean not like I'm not getting naked in the
MRI machine. I'm not kind of that kind of person
thinking about that. No, I just if I didn't know,
I don't need an MRI, I knock out what hope?
I don't need it anymore again. But the MRI open
(46:34):
MRI looks like a scam. The closed MRI definitely was.
It's not good, all right? So CJ. Garner Johnson being
tended to and we'll hopefully get update from Aaron Wilson.
He's gonna text when he's running to talk, so we'll
wait for him to give us an update on that
excellent way. If I just don't get it, come up
at eleven thirty today, I don't see if I have
anything written down for this week. So if I say CJ.
(46:59):
Garner Johnson's done for your art, is the average fan
bumping around town going, oh my god? Or are they like,
who's CJ. Garner Johnson? I don't know.
Speaker 2 (47:09):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (47:09):
You're asking. There's a lot of Texans fans they're coming back. Yeah,
i'd I would say the name would at least ring
a bell. They say, who is that? That sounds familiar? Yeah,
it's like I know, I can't place it because he
hasn't done anything yet for the Texans. And I would
say that most Texans fans had no idea who was
until he signed here, Like, oh, he's the loud guy
(47:31):
to play for the Eagles. Okay, he helped. I don't know,
we'll see. I always feel like and maybe A Ross
is just a miscalculation of my part that the that
like we get we get in the weeds on the
Astros because we have the Astros games on and maybe
if we had the Texans game we would get way
more in the weeds on them. But for just doing
(47:51):
a show that talks about a little bit about everything,
I think people really care about who the running back is,
who the wide receiver is, who the quarterback is, and
maybe who the number like Will Anderson. People know who
Will Anderson is, yes, but I don't think there's a
lot of people at I hope he's a great year
this year. It's not in our job description to educate people,
(48:12):
but I tried.
Speaker 13 (48:14):
I mean.
Speaker 1 (48:16):
We we and we talk about this Matt even off air,
like figuring out what our audience wants to hear. But
also if if there are people who are uneducated or
don't know about things, it's I don't know, it's an
interesting My general thought is on the offensive line, I
mentioned to you last week, just protect the quarterback. It
doesn't matter who they are up front. Yeah. Well, also
(48:38):
because if he had five Allo pros up front, that
the fans would know who they are. And Laramie Tunsil
was a recognizable person, yes, and Titus Howard was recognizable
too because of the fact that he was a first
round pick. You got it in the first round pick.
You always got to keep an eye on, yes, and
expectation levels are very high. Kenyon Green. It was a
first round pick. Now even who ken hardly played well.
If a guy's getting crushed every single uh, it because
(49:00):
because it will happen and they'll get noticed on TV.
Kenyon Green was the name was used a lot on
TV broadcast last year, and not because he was making
great stocks. Oh, text the game of a sade? How
did you Kenyon Green? Okay, and that makes a lot
of sense. Uh, look at Kenyon Green getting moved like
he's a pass blocking sled. This is not good like tomorrow.
Let's do this. Let's go tomorrow. We'rekt talier brewing. Let's
(49:22):
just go. We like to say hi toitar listeners during
a break, Okay, walk up and saying you know what
your thought about Ced Carner Johnson? What do you think
about lacln Tomlinson liacn mm hmm. It's an interesting first name. Yes, dude,
what percentage of people that we see tomorrow at Tiger boning?
(49:45):
The what position he plays?
Speaker 6 (49:46):
Wow?
Speaker 1 (49:46):
How many brews are they in?
Speaker 2 (49:47):
Ooh?
Speaker 1 (49:50):
Like actually, I feel like I pull better random names
when I've had a few. I do that with old
Astro players. Yeah, like I can give you a Tai game.
I don't know who the hell that is, see, but
I'm sober imagine I'm going to be if I had
three four beers.
Speaker 3 (50:05):
Huh.
Speaker 1 (50:06):
I've been pulling out a Tony Scott for you, Little Paul,
Little Paul Bocco, Paul Bacco, Brent Myers, Hey, Tommy was
a round Rando, Tommy Manzela, Charlton Jimmerson and whatnot. Oh
my god, we are sowing the weeds on the tech Astros. Now,
what's wrong with us? Astro Fanly? Look, if you're a
fan of a team, and I would consider myself a
(50:27):
diehard Astros fan, I'm gonna know more about them as
compared to being just an observer of the Texans. You've
got work due because you're now better and ross and
you've got to get you gotta get your grips on
the entire I've always followed the team, I just haven't
been a fan. But now you are. Nothing's gonna stop
you now. Ain't no stop at us now, baby, divisional round,
(50:48):
let's go. We're going back ten back to back to
back Divisional round ten and seven. Is the bar in
a three point thirty start on a Saturday. That's the bar, baby,
I'm Peacock. By the way, we have a bet about that.
Do you remember I don't I have three thirty Saturday?
You have the field I believe for this year if
they make the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (51:05):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (51:05):
Now, the only way I win this is they playing
the Chiefs or they play somebody really recognizable. See if
they put the charge about that bet right now, I'm terrible.
If they play the Chargers on toast. If they play
the Bengals, I'm toast Baltimore, I'm probably toast.
Speaker 14 (51:25):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (51:26):
They went I could play Baltimore in a wild card,
but I mean they could. But so I get the field,
you get three thirty. Yeah, dang, I'm gonna lose that bet. Mean,
let me, I'll go find the archives Homely, I'm pull
up the Nostra Wrungus file. No, no, no, I think
I think we absolutely better. I put it in the file.
But I just had to get the specifics. Did I
get odds?
Speaker 5 (51:44):
No?
Speaker 1 (51:44):
Dang, I don't know what you I think you were.
Because they announced Peacock was gonna be on and I
don't know you thought they were gonna be on Monday
or something. I don't know what you were thinking. Yeah,
uh oh. The dog's name was Frank. Just tweet at me.
I've had one MRI and they put me under. Only
way is going to get done. No way in hell
I'm doing that a week. Thank you. The dog's name
was Frank Marty. All right for the for the bet,
(52:06):
I have Saturday three thirty or no playoffs? Oh your toast,
You are so toast, you have to feel. I don't
know what he was drinking that day. Usually, I'm pretty
proud of my bets. By why I'm feeling better by
Kyle Tucker? Oh are you walking out of tippet? No,
I'm not going up it. We're gonna keep it status quo.
All right, it's already got a fast food meal for
(52:26):
us and bochi. Yeah, I'm not go when I got
to owe you buy you a restaurant next time?
Speaker 15 (52:31):
Or what?
Speaker 1 (52:32):
It's one franchise.
Speaker 3 (52:33):
Eight that's a lot.
Speaker 1 (52:35):
Mm hmm. Seven's a lot. Seven seems manageable. Look up
one projection for his contract you're gonna see or thirteen
years that's but they were saying the same thing about pregnant,
and I was about that. You're right, who's this girl
on TV? She looks like Alicia Silverstone? No, she does not.
She's got a new TV show off. She was on
the Today Show this morning. I am I have had
(52:56):
a massive crush on Alicia Silverstone for a long time. Yeah,
she's al Teimer. What do you put her in the
on the all time rank? She's tier two? Who's who's
joining her in tier two? More importantly, if Sophia Fgar
is in tier one? Tier one? Is Sofia Vergara, Scarlett, Johansson,
(53:17):
Jessica Alba. M hm, like the we're talking the we're
talking like all Timer's five rings, ten All Pros Hall
of Fame first ballot. At least she's so stoned. What
tier you getting? Nicole Kidman in lesser than probably Kidman
though she was putting up numbers, Maddie, same category. Jeez,
(53:42):
we'll think about this during the break. I just don't
get it coming up at eleven thirty seven one three
two one two five seven out if you want to
chime in in seven one three two one two five
so many somebody else gotta have some like their Silverstone?
How about Sarah Uh, not Sarah Uh. Jennifer love HEWITTT.
I mean tier two. Think of the bowl of oatmeal
these days, tier three or two two? Ooh, think about it. Seven.
(54:07):
She's had like two primes. Yeah, she had been like
Kurt Warner. She had twenty one year old prime and
then she got forty one year old prime like Kurt
Warner with the Cardinals. Right now, hear that no other
radio show in the marketplace is gonna's gonna put Sarah,
Michelle Geller, and Kurt Warner in the same conversation. Learn
twenty one Sports Talk seven ninety literally moments ago. Jamiko
(54:30):
Ryans on what happened with c J. Garner Johnson.
Speaker 13 (54:34):
Of course, it's you know, it's heartbreaking when you see
a guy go down on the field like that and
doesn't get up quickly. So I'm always, you know, nervous
as a head coach anytime I see anybody hit the ground. It's, uh,
it's tough to watch. So we'll see, you know, we'll
evaluate CJ, see where he is. But no update at
this time.
Speaker 1 (54:54):
Yeah, no surprise. I mean I wouldn't expect anything, but again,
we've done this a few times that life watching about
players getting caught up the field and guys on their knees.
And my guess is CJ was screaming in agony. Now
he just doesn't help. Yeah, it doesn't sound good. There's
no little to no reason for optimism right now for
(55:17):
him being out a significant amount of time. Hopefully you
get some kind of news that it's not the A
words Achilles or acl Yeah. Yeah, that's too bad, because again,
I you know, look, he did bring in some swagger
for a limited time he was here. He knows what
it's like to win a championship, having done so with
(55:38):
the Eagles.
Speaker 9 (55:38):
Hmmm.
Speaker 1 (55:40):
Now, his history is he wears out his welcome fairly
quickly no matter where he goes. But it wasn't like
he wasn't on the field. It wasn't like he didn't play.
It wasn't like he wasn't an integral part of the
Eagles winning the championship last year. And you know what, frankly,
once in a while you want to I mean, look,
the textans right day was Stefan Diggs last year trying
(56:00):
to bring an electro moxy to the team. And you know,
the injury to Digs ultimately his a C L maybe
maybe if he maybe if you're just a little bit
of a smart smart ass. Uh red ass. Yeah, okay,
if you're a red ass, maybe you just where the
Texans gear is not what you're supposed to do. Think
(56:20):
about this. Okay, stay with me on this. Let's talk
about the famous red asses in Texans history. Okay, Okay,
ed Reed Harley he wasn't a red ass. He was
just past his prime. He was old ass, he was
washed ass. But I mean he was brought in because
of the pedigree. Robert c McNair wanted in there, like, hey,
beat the Patriots, and we're gonna beat the Patriots. Now,
(56:43):
well they're not even face the Patriots, all right, so
you're taking him off the board. Yes, Stefan Diggs full
of games. Okay. J Watt was head button people. He was,
but he's Ran Cushing was a red ass. But he
was also pregnant human ganetotropin. You remembered that, Yeah, you don't,
(57:06):
HCD No, it comes from the urine of pregnant women.
We have Bill Romanowski on talking about that. I might
still have that drop. How about the fact that Bob
McNair went up to New York to defend him. He
gets in Goodell's office and literally McNair is told to
turn around and go back home. Overtrained athlete syndrome. Do
(57:27):
you feel like a bad person, like when you're a
kid or some are you lied about something, or you
lied on your brother or cousin or whatever, and then
you get people to believe it and you're like, ooh,
well I'm about this. This feels worse, maggib you analogy.
He went to go see Goodell. His ap poement was
on Friday. He went up there a day early by accident.
Godell said all right, come on in here, and the
(57:49):
conversation was five minutes long. I mean I felt terrible
for hi. Yeah, we have audio from that. Actually go ahead,
Well no we don't. I'm my computer's reason doing Matt
Ship took my ass up. Man, we're on ten second
delay here. Sorry you you tease? Yeah? Oh I see
what you did. Timing's everything on this show, dude. This
(58:13):
is freaking computer all right. That comes from the yurine
a pregnant woman. Thank you. That is an og poll
right there. That is for twenty twelve. Wow, Jonathan new
is a baby when the show begand oh, now you
just eat them, that's right. Occas Okay, So who are
(58:33):
the red asses in the history of this franchise? Oh
my gosh, would you consider Dante Robinson to be one? No,
he just wanted to get paid. That wouldn't like the
crack people's skulls get penalties. Yeah, Andre Johnson except for
Courtland Finnegan, Andrey Johnson was a red ass that Sunday.
That was one time in his entire NFL career. See
now you're uh we go back to like what's his name? Walker?
Speaker 6 (58:54):
Was it?
Speaker 1 (58:54):
Greg Walker? Gary Walker, Gary Walker, Aaron Glenn wasn't? He
was just great, nim It's a legend, that's the thing
ross this friend stop. Well, first of all, if you
remember at the beginning of that, they didn't want anybody
who was controversial because to my greater point, there just
hasn't been a lot of that. We haven't had a
lot of the Oh here comes not like trouble, but
(59:16):
here comes uh spicy commentary if you will, as he's
all share, here's kind of a red ass. He also
got suspended. Trevor Lawrence asked this NFL suspension list. You know,
it's the first time I've ever heard the phrase red ass.
It's kind of a country dude.
Speaker 3 (59:33):
Turn.
Speaker 1 (59:33):
I'm gonna be honest, man, he got that red ass.
Do you do you understand the context of it? Yeah?
Does it fit? I just never heard of it?
Speaker 12 (59:42):
Girl?
Speaker 1 (59:43):
That what remember him? Stop? How about Brandon Harris? Bill
Brian was a red ass. Players staged a coup. He
hit it everybody. The best one was when the Texans
went to Seattle many years ago and Wayne Brown's like,
we ain't going up there until this this this gets
(01:00:03):
figured out. Dwayne Brown was a red ass with the
McNair family. Yeah, for those three that are Dayne Brown,
fans don't expect him in the Hall of Honor, or
the Ring of Honor, whatever the o they're calling it.
That's the thing.
Speaker 10 (01:00:14):
Ross.
Speaker 1 (01:00:15):
What about Brett the hitman, hartman punter? He had red ass.
You can't suit the organization?
Speaker 3 (01:00:20):
Well he was.
Speaker 1 (01:00:21):
He was spearing returnment and then he sued them when
he ripped his knee on the turf. That's some red ass.
You're threatening litigation. Got some red ass in you, Yeah,
suing your bosses. That's a little bit of our ass
red ass, that is for sure, all right, That that
includes our crazy red ass test Ryan Fitzpatrick. Stop. Remember
(01:00:45):
he was like screaming and acting crazy. No, he just
said look to me when he's there playing the Buffalo Bills. No, no, no,
he just he just had a frothy beard. That's all
he had. Okay, fine, Harvard Graduate red Ass. Oh oh
may he rest Ryan Mallet. Ryan Mount's dead.
Speaker 10 (01:01:04):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:01:07):
Oh man, well this guy south real quick? Yeah, okay.
Oh Bernard Pollard, that's a good Pollard. Oh oh, Tyron
Matthew had a little bit of him. Yeah, there's a few,
not very many, but there's a few. There we go.
We've officially knocked out anybody that had a little bit
of extra spice.
Speaker 3 (01:01:25):
There.
Speaker 1 (01:01:25):
Oh, Jake DeLonge was here, you locat in red Ass.
That's not the same. I'm talking about his cooking.
Speaker 14 (01:01:31):
Happy.
Speaker 1 (01:01:31):
Nobody knew what he was saying. No, no, no, man,
what Jake? What like Bobby hey Bear mentioned Bobby amy Man.
But I when I asked me, all run, not all free?
Speaker 4 (01:01:47):
What Jake?
Speaker 1 (01:01:49):
All right, I'm just going deep, Jake, Jake, count one
to ten. I'm always in one, two, nine, ten, loving
all right. I just Doke gets up next. Please help
us out here, and don't say this segment. Yeah, if
you don't get this segment, you're you're with You're join
the majority of people. If there's something in your life
(01:02:11):
you just don't get, we're here to help you. Me
the sage one, Jonathan, the naive one, and I don't
even know what ross is. Do you have something in your.
Speaker 2 (01:02:28):
Life that's just don't get?
Speaker 1 (01:02:31):
No need to worry, no need to We will just
do the topics, just see if we comprehend the things
that they can use our friends. It's time to say
I just don't get it. All right. This is a
(01:02:54):
part of our week where we kind of just get
philosophical on you. Russell had the update on the astros
un the update on CJ. Gardner Johnson. If you're not
heard again, Aaron Wilson's going to stop by via the
phone here from West Virginia at some point the next
I'm guess the next hour or so. Rossie. There's been
a lot of reports about Las Vegas taking a twelve
(01:03:15):
percent drop in their revenue to the city, and everybody
and their mother is attributing that to the overall general
economy of this country. And I say, I just don't
get it. And I'll tell you the reasons why I
(01:03:36):
think people are going away from Las Vegas for multiple
reasons in no particular order. One, gambling is now available
in just about every state in this Union or within
a stone's throw case in Point Houston to Lake Charles.
It's easier to get to Lake Charles, and it is
to get to Las Vegas. Now, you and me, especially me,
I love Las Vegas, love every time I go. I'll
(01:03:57):
never merge the city, I'll smrch. But the reality is,
if I need a gambling fix, I'm going to go
get mine in Like Charles, a lot faster than I
can by paying hotel, airfare, ubers whatever to get to
Las Vegas. Number two, Las Vegas has service charged the
hell out of people, so it's no fees. It's no
(01:04:19):
longer a economical place to go. If you want to
go to Las Vegas, eat hotel service, fees, tips, food cost.
People are spending their money to go to Hawaii, or
people are going to Jamaica or people going to Mexico
for all inclusive. If I don't care about gambling, I'm
(01:04:41):
not going to Las Vegas because it's not any more
of a easier place to go on the cheap like
twenty five years ago, you go to Las Vegas and
the cheap you could go on a discount airline, you
can get the room rates were really good. They weren't
charging any thirty nine dollars a day for internet and
phones and all that kind of stuff. And number three,
the reason why Las Vegas is struggling is because what
(01:05:02):
Las Vegas has done to market itself is to market
between the ages of say eighteen and thirty and eighteen
and thirty year olds are going to Las Vegas to
do what dance, swim and drink. They're not going to gamble.
Las Vegas has lost the identity of the people who
want to do things in Las Vegas that makes in
(01:05:23):
the most money, and that is to gamble. So that's
part of marketing of Las Vegas's fault. Part of it
is because of the fact that you get so many
different options that are closer to home. And number three,
you've added all these fees and side charges that doesn't
make it an economical place for people to go. And
I'm talking about people that fly there, people that live
(01:05:44):
in La They're not running Vegas anymore because it's just
not the affordable goodaway. So I say, to those that
are attributing the national economy to Las Vegas downturn, I say,
I just don't get it. Sorry, Okay, so you're saying,
I'm saying the national economy has nothing to do with
(01:06:06):
the reason why Las Vegas is down. In my mind,
I think it's part of it. I think are our
airfares down down if you do it long enough in
advance air first night as a whole, I don't know. Yeah,
I mean, apparently Las Vegas revenues are down. I think
(01:06:28):
part of it does have to do with young kids
these days who just grew up in their phones. You
have more people are introverted, more people who are asocial
and eat or have and or have social anxiety, who
don't grow up gambling, and if you do, if you
want to gamble with the broskies, you're just doing a
bunch of parlays, which is legal in like thirty something states. So, yeah,
(01:06:52):
it makes perfect sense to me that that Vegas' revenues
are down. Used to get really good comps back in
the day. You know this, Matt, Yeah, you could get
you could play blackjack, you know, twenty five fifty dollars
a hand, and you might get a room. You might
get a half. The reason why Las Vegas is down
is because it's Las Vegas's fault, not that, not the
national economy's fault. That's my thought. They squeeze a lot
(01:07:13):
of things, and they built all these massive things that
they have to pay to maintain and operate, and then
that cost gets passed down to you. And so, like
you said, they add resort fees, they add all these
other fees. They give you worse odds on games. You
can't hardly find three to two blackjack on the strip
unless you're betting fifty dollars a hand. Not that everybody's
caring about that, but I'm not a big care of it.
(01:07:36):
But I understand where you are now. So you know
it's it's Vegas's fault, not because the price of eggs
has gone up or the price of a hamburger has
gone up. What I think you could be go hand
in hand. You have fewer money, less money for trips.
It becomes less appetizing. I go spit because you're going.
Because you know this, Matt. When you go to Vegas
(01:07:57):
and you say I'm gonna bring fifteen hundred dollars, they
mentally you say, I can afford to lose all of
that money, right, So Vegas trips inherently come with an
extra risk of money loss. I just see, I'm not
gonna lose fifteen hundred bucks in the beach. I think
our are our planes are full across this country, Our
(01:08:19):
hotels are full, our highways are full. People are still
figuring out ways to vacation. And if you are competing
against Orlando and the Beach in Los Angeles and Chicago
and New York or as Gordy went to Boston this
past week and hung out for seven eight days, did
he hit the encore? I don't think he hit the encore.
I hit the OnCore. Point being is this You've got
(01:08:41):
to make it a destination that comes across as affordable,
and Las Vegas is no longer affordable. Shame on you,
Las Vegas done. Yeah, I'm curious of the long term
health of UH. I don't know if they'll ever become obsolete,
but I mean, you've got online casinos. It'd be interesting
to see. That's all I had. Just I just, I
(01:09:02):
just I'm not going to allow that my Hamburger meets
a dollar more pound than for the reason why people
aren't going to Las Vegas. That's my only point. I
don't know if that makes sense to me. Okay, then
you do get it, then I do get it. All right,
what you got this week? Let's go to Johnathan John?
What do you what don't you get this week? I
had something. I forgot what it was. That's fine. Uh,
well a lot now that I'm getting to like the
(01:09:22):
adult age and everything and getting out of college, I
didn't know that people really just quit jobs just because
they want they like don't want to work anymore. They
get like they don't have a valid reason, in my opinion,
to just lose their income and hope for another job
to come. So like uh Geo I call it was
talking about how he got micro Mann and stea Da
da da. There's people around my age that if that
(01:09:43):
happened to them, they'll just quit the job without any
plan or anything like that. And I really don't understand
the point, because especially our age and going into any industry,
you're gonna have to build up something, even if it's experienced,
uh you know, you know, credibility, you know, can connections.
I don't understand what's the point unless it's a prejudice
h you know big, you know scandor like you know,
(01:10:05):
they're hanging on you whatever. If it's something that just
like that, I just don't understand why you're just quitting
your job and then helping you find some because you
had a bad day at work, so you're instead of
fighting it out and working hard for it, you just quit.
I just don't you know what it is.
Speaker 2 (01:10:17):
I give you.
Speaker 1 (01:10:18):
It's the college. It's a transfer portal of life. Leave
with that. As soon as you're unhappy with your college.
Speaker 10 (01:10:25):
Quit.
Speaker 1 (01:10:25):
You don't have any idl bial you lined up anywhere else,
you know, to that point, I'll put up the curtains
for the audience. I got kicked off of my first
team at Western Kentucky, but that is because I had
shown out and was outspoken on an issue that wasn't
one hundred percent received and it was disrespectful. That's just
something I can get, okay, all right. But there was
people even on college teams, like you said, going to
transfer portals because oh I had some bad races. Oh,
(01:10:48):
coach didn't put me in because you didn't want to
go to practice on time. And then I'm going to
transfer it and you're stuck and you're not an athlete anymore.
It doesn't make sense to me. Well, I'm unfortunate. I
do get it because I've raised I'm raising three children
and taking it out is something that we always fight
through absolutely hundred percent. Yeah, I think a lot of
people will maybe quit these days too because, uh, you know, Matt,
(01:11:08):
In twenty twenty five, more parents are keeping their kids
past eighteen than in nineteen seventy five. No question. When
you were a spot, you were either going to work immediately,
going to college, or the military. All right, real quicker.
We got Aaron Wilson's joints next time, don't you get.
Everybody's all up at arms about smelling salts and it
(01:11:29):
became a thing like, I don't know, maybe Jonathan can
shine some light on this. Did did you guys use
smelling salts on the track? So we did. We did
it in a weight room. We would. There's some people
that definitely will get the smelling sauce in the white
room sometimes the track, but you don't want to mess
up your energy like that.
Speaker 3 (01:11:42):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:11:43):
The NFL, by the way, has changed it a little bit.
You're allowed to bring your own smelling sou so yeah,
I think it was misread or something that was firstly misreported.
But yeah, you can bring your own smelling salts. But
there have been studies upon studies upon studies that say
it doesn't really do anything. It doesn't help your athletic performance.
So all they're saying they mask concussions, which I I
remember had a need to use smelling salts. I can't
tave it does or not. It does give you temporary alertness, Okay,
(01:12:04):
so then maybe I do get it. I was gonna say,
I don't get why it's like everybody's up in arms
with smelling salts, But all right. Aaron Wilson's gonna join
us from West Virginia next eleven forty three on the
Matt Thomas Show with Ross will give us an update
on CJ. Gardner Johnson. This is seven ninety Channel two's
Aaron Wilson. You hear him on some of our radio
(01:12:26):
shows here on Sports Talk Saebouty. We appreciate him taking
a couple of minutes on very short notice to join
us here. Aaron joining us from West Virginia where today
he happened to see a Texan safety go down and
Ross put him on the line for me. There erin
the first fall. Thank you for joining us. Take us
back to what exactly happened as you saw it yourself.
Speaker 3 (01:12:47):
Yeah, very unfortunate situation for CJ. Gardner Johnson. Then the
Texans defense, So Matt what happened? He was covering wide
receiver John Metsi the third and he went down immediately
grabs his right knee area and he pounds the ground
(01:13:08):
in frustration and obvious pain. And then it was a
real somber scene as got very quiet on the field
and guys took a knee out of respect for a
guy they called cddus that they've come to like in
a very short time. He's become a very popular member
of the team. And obviously, you know, a big play
guy that likes to talk, likes to have one out there,
(01:13:28):
and very feisty competitor. And then he's carted off the field.
The guys came over to wish him well. He went
inside the Green Riter Sports Performance Center and shortly a
little bit shortly ago, we talked to Demiko Ryants, who
called it heartbreaking to see him go down like that,
and he did not have a specific update. Obviously, there's
(01:13:50):
going to be an MRI and X rays and all that,
and that'll happen today, but doesn't look like they're going
to be, you know, some sort of good news situation
out of this. People are bracing for the worst, which
would be a season ending injury for CJ. Gardner Johnson.
We don't have a lot of specifics yet, but it
(01:14:10):
was very, very serious injury and it wasn't only got
to fall today. I saw Christian kirk ball in the field.
I don't know if the surface was bad or not.
I did talk to EJ. Speed about his reaction to
what happened to CJ. Gardner Johnson, and it was upsetting.
He says he's got a good family around him, and
he says they're gonna be praying for him and trying
(01:14:33):
to give him all the support they can. And definitely
cast a pal over the final day of practice. It
would have been a productive four days here at the Greenbrier.
Could have just seemed like happened back in Houston, but
it happened here before the Texans even play a real game.
Speaker 1 (01:14:49):
Now, not the depth charge me in everything, but you
know who how many players occupy the safety position. The
depth chart was already rather lean there. How much trouble
is a fanchies in right now at that particular position.
Speaker 3 (01:15:03):
It's an issue because they were counting on him to
galvanize the other safety spot next to Calen Bill Kelln
Bulk Sexellent, and he had five interceptions last year. But
Jimmy Ward's coming off foot surgery and he has a
felony case out in Montgomery County that is still unresolved.
He has on August thirteenth court date. We don't know
about his availability, We don't know the outcome. I can't
(01:15:26):
predict the future for his case or for when his
foot will be ready because he's still on the pup list.
Speaker 15 (01:15:33):
One option for.
Speaker 3 (01:15:34):
Them is to have Jalen Petrie play safety again. I
think that's something that they will at least entertain think
about as a personnel and a coaching staff, which you
can do there. Then you could have Arthur Molett, who's
been a veteran starter as a nickel, and we've seen
some pretty good plays out of Mouthles Bryant in the past,
including in the playoffs, So that is an option. You
(01:15:56):
have Rush Yeast and you would have had I think
a guy that could have stepped in in Jalen reed,
but he sprained his ankle season to be out about
three weeks, so not having read right now, but you know,
I think he's going to be back during the seasons
and that will give them some flexibility. But yeah, playing
life without CD deuce not as good for the defense.
(01:16:18):
But you know, safety position was looking pretty good with him,
you know, as an inconceivable to Jimmy Ward, who you know,
even though he's thirty four, has still made some plays,
made some play last year like the pick six against
the Titans that they couldn't get him in there. But
I just don't want to speculate Matt because you know
that's a felony, third degree felony. We don't know what's
(01:16:39):
going to happen with him in Montgomery County. Steve lawyers
told me that he'll be vindicated, but you know, we'll see.
That's what lawyers say.
Speaker 1 (01:16:47):
Ross with you here as well, Aaron, and you mentioned
a lot of different options, in a lot of different
ways that they can kind of address this. Do you
think they will keep it internal with with all those
options or you think Nick Cassio could look external as well.
Speaker 3 (01:17:00):
I think he'll look around. That's that's what he always
does he will look around. I don't know if there's
like a surefire option out there that makes a lot
of sense, we're gonna, you know, plug a guy, and
then it's probably already the thing on the internet, like,
oh well, let's get this guy, Let's get the guy,
let's trade for somebody. I don't know. I mean, I
think I think he can get it done with the
(01:17:20):
people he has me, you know, I think, you know, Petrie,
that's one good option. You know, Arthur Malette, he's a
starter for Pittsburgh and Baltimore. He's still a pretty good player.
That's something they could do. You know, he could kind
of have some flexibility there with Nickel, with him and
Miles Bryant, or a combination of Jalen other guys, maybe
(01:17:41):
some people, other people cross training at safety, but him,
you know, kind of probably the next man up if
you're just not want to shuffle, will probably be m J.
Stewart because of his experience with Jalen Reed still sidelined
and you know, it's not the worst sprained ankle ever,
but it's a decent sprained ankle in the sense that
you know, he was pretty you know, turned his ankle
(01:18:04):
pretty bad. So at least he was able to walk,
but he's working hard. Trying to get back can take time.
But I really liked what I was seeing from him.
There were pick sixes, and I know they weren't hitting,
but I know that he's a big hitter for Penn State.
He had like ninety eight tackles and force and fumbles.
He's about two hundred and ten pounds. He looks like
a little linebackery short and Stocky met him a couple
(01:18:26):
of times really when he worked out with all those
guys on the middle school field in the area and
he would see him out there, and yeah, he's a
serious ballplayer. I think he's a good player. And then
he's gonna be heard from at some point once he's
healthy in the safety position. And you know, we're not
trying to you know, right, go bit on season, go
under season just yet. But it didn't look good and
(01:18:48):
you got to turn the page sometimes that is the
hard reality of injuries and pro sports. And yeah, I
feel bad for him and got it known a little
bit and a lot of fun to talk to, a
lot of fun to watch play. And this definitely takes
a little bit of spiciness out of the defense not
having him.
Speaker 1 (01:19:07):
Aaron Aaron Wilson with us here on Sports Talk seven ninety.
So we know that the defense had been looking good.
We'll await some further news on the CJ. Gardner Johnson situation.
I saw a couple of reports that the offense was
looking a little bit better today, including the offensive line.
Speaker 3 (01:19:23):
I think they did a decent job of stonewall in
the rush. It was a scrimmage situation, but unfortunately the
receivers didn't really do their job, and they can play
better than that. Nico Collins had a drop what it
was a easy touchdown and he didn't catch the football,
and then there was some double where he with another
play where he was open and CJ missed them. So
there were some lapses there. But yeah, they looked, okay,
(01:19:48):
they're not gonna have Nick Chubb in this game. He's
got a head injury, so it's like code for a
confession probably, so he's not playing it. Much of the
young guys lost on a hoodie bar.
Speaker 1 (01:20:02):
We don't know.
Speaker 3 (01:20:03):
You have to set drouts one to play any snaps.
I wonder if it's injury today gives them any paws,
But they can't put these guys in glass and break
in case of emergency, and at some point they have
to play a little football.
Speaker 2 (01:20:15):
He wants to play.
Speaker 3 (01:20:16):
We'll see if he plays at all. Last year in
Pittsburgh he played one series, went five for five. They
got everything done they needed to get done. I think
Tank had a touchdown. Well Tank Dell who'll play next year,
not this year. But yeah, it's a tough deal, Matt.
I think you got to get ready. I was just
talking with Nick Kayley, the O SEA it'll interview with
him that will play on KPE RC, and he's pretty
(01:20:40):
excited about the rookies like Jayden and Higgins and jail
Nole and those guys are definitely playing and we get
them out there and get their feet wet and like so,
you've think for Mariantio hersery and some of the things.
Some of the things are having an offense that are
not alarmists and there's a lot of skuys following kind
of stuff. And yeah, it's been rough. Well we don't
(01:21:00):
know yet. Segue is just that the defense is so
good and the offense is going to look good against
you know, some teams that don't have a defense, like
the Texans, or it would be like this against any defense.
You know, I don't know. I can't answer that question yet,
but it's a concern.
Speaker 1 (01:21:16):
Lastly, for Aaron Wilson, he is in West Virginia with
the Texans. Aaron Wilson underscore NFL is on Twitter. Aaron
Wilson underscore NFL. When do you do to get a
update on Joe Mixon. I know that coach was not
overly excited about even talking about that a handful of
days ago. With Nick Chubb, as you mentioned being out
potentially for a concussion. That running back quote unquote room
(01:21:39):
is rather lean as well at this point. So when
do you think the next time we'll hear something about
potentially that this one two punch for the Texans in
the running game.
Speaker 3 (01:21:48):
I think as we get closer to the first game,
that's when they'll see if they can get him on
the field. And I know that he's not a big
fan of the preseason, but he's made a bunch of progress.
So some of the information I've gotten on him is
that it's definitely a chance he can be ready for
the first game. It's not a lock that he will be,
(01:22:09):
but that he's got him got a shot to do that,
and they're a different offense with the smash mouth element
they have with him and breakaway threats occasionally with Joe.
Right now, it doesn't look great and you've got you know,
no Nick Chubbs. You know it's a preseason game, but
you know basically what you have available in star Ago Mawale.
(01:22:30):
Damian Pierce didn't practice today under the ramp up that
they're doing. Even though yes he's ready, they're not going
to let him after one walk through practice go from
zero to one hundred and playing a game. So no Pierce,
Tahar Jordan and what he marks, and you're just gonna
have a lot of those type of guys out there
playing for the Texans, and so basically it's gonna be
(01:22:52):
like kind of a backup Bowl as my expectation for
the Texans. And I just don't know if we're going
to see these starters if we do be out out
of there really quick. I do think we're going to
see the offensive line. Maybe they're the exception and i'd
love to watch that. I don't know if Johnson Gernard's
gonna play, and he had a great game against these guys,
and we'll pay back. He was mad when they didn't
(01:23:12):
sign into a new contract and he left to go
to the Vikings and cashed in there. But he had
a point to prove and he proved it. We'll see
if it's in the action like that.
Speaker 2 (01:23:22):
It's just very.
Speaker 3 (01:23:23):
Fluid with preseason, especially the first one, getting guys out
there and seeing what they're gonna do. Not I guess,
is there anybody out there that loves to watch? I
would say, just enjoy the backups. That's probably what we're
gonna have.
Speaker 1 (01:23:37):
Yeah. Well, unfortunately, the Seattle Mariners did not miss the
opportunity to gain some more ground on the Astros. It
is getting sneaky, sneaky close in the American League. West
White Sox trying to make it a game last night,
but the Mariners won eight to six in White Sox
(01:24:02):
Hula Riguaz. The three were in a home run. They
scored five in the second inning. They were up seven
to one. Did you see the Blue Jays rocky score. Yeah,
but that's not out of the ordinary for Denver, right,
it gets a little out of the was a final loss?
Speaker 7 (01:24:16):
You no one?
Speaker 1 (01:24:18):
I mean, goodness, gracious, I mean, how many people were
at the game to see it. I mean like, don't look.
I'm gonna I'm gonna see. If you know that you
need the answer, I'll show you. I have the box score,
I don't have the dollar. I don't have the Uh.
It was a Wednesday, Wednesday afternoon, oh daytime in Denver,
(01:24:41):
eighty six twenty nine. Well, shut up, my bum ass up.
The only people that only draw eighty six hundred now
are the A's and the race. That's everybody else draws
it least. Yeah, at least moms draw twelve. That's the
Rockies get their ass beat. At least it's pleasant out there.
It's a beautiful ballpark. Yeah, I've only been on the
outside of it many times. I've never been inside. I'm
kind jealous. I went it was great. Yeah all right,
(01:25:03):
and they scored. Now, this is just rude by Blue Jays.
They scored eight in the ninth. God, just get some outs,
don't you have? Like the mercy rule? Yeah, they should
pinch hit all pictures at that point. Time down for
the news. That dude, what And with that we go
to the Jamie Erdaal of Houston Sports News. It's rossvilll around. Yes, Matthew,
(01:25:26):
as you a bit you. You you have the Astros
losing to the Marlins yesterday. They do have the day
off today, and they're setting up for a weekend to
set in the Bronx probable pictures. It'll be Brown versus
Schlitter on Friday, then it will be Colton Gordon. Wait
(01:25:47):
what I thought I heard it was frommer? Why does
ESPN say Colton Gordon? Now this gets shuffled around? Well,
no Challa Rome brought that up yesterday. Maybe they're wrong.
The ESPN have can be wrong, right, ESPN is often wrong.
Uh it should be. I heard it was. I read
it was going to be Brown fromber This ESPN is
saying Colton Gordon on Saturday. But I'm gonna go with
(01:26:09):
what I saw yesterday. Here it is. This is as
of hours ago. Yeah, Brown tomorrow Valdez Saturday to be
determined on Sunday. Yeah, I'm gonna go with that because
ESPN's always wrong. Okay, how are we feeling we can
send in the Bronx. I'm happy that Cardles Penire Jeremy
Pennon will play all three games in that series at
trust up. How about that? Boom? Okay, happy to see that.
(01:26:33):
Also matter if you've seen the news. According to Texas
Monthly Magazine and an interview with Archie Manning, he believes
that arch Manning will not declare for the draft after
this year. He expects him to be at Texas for
four years, some saying the bigger question will be does
(01:26:54):
he stay in school after his red shirt junior year? MM,
so you have you have Archie the there two years.
Arch excuse me, Arch Okay, yeah, that's not crazy. This
year next, that's fine, it's fine, it's fine. Okay, one
dash one may change things, but who knows, but it
might not. We've seen it before. I think he's one
(01:27:16):
dash one. He leaves. If he is the number one
quarterback thought of in college football, he leaves, and I
will stand by that. And if I'm wrong, I'm wrong.
I will stand by the fact that he is marched
or arched. Okay, drama, I knew this. He's marched to
a different drum beat. Okay, pretty good. By the way.
(01:27:39):
The Mariners are playing today against the White Sox, and
then they have a three game a weekend home series
against Tampa Bay. So Tampa Bay's gonna be a little
high drama between American League East teams and American League
West teams this weekend. Do you want these schedule strength
update Matt, No, I don't, don't. Don't even say it
(01:28:01):
pretty good. Go ahead then, because they got it in
my ill even better after they play the White Sox
today today, Okay, go ahead. Twenty fifth and twenty six
teams in terms of opponents, schedule, opponents win percentage, schedule strength, Astros,
and then mirrors. So while you go over the next story,
(01:28:21):
I want to see what the Astro. The last seven
games of the year are the Astros against the A's
and the Angels in California. Okay, those are going to
be two teams most win games. The smart person's going
to say, well, if the Astros have it easy, how
do the Mariners have it I'm glad you asked. The
Mariners will close out the season home for the Dodgers
(01:28:48):
the final week of the series, final weekend of the
weekend series, and hopefully have something to play for god,
I hope so. And two games up on the padres
right now, I do have some bad news. They have
three with the Rockies at home in with the Rockies
and the Dodgers, so it's easy. Other thought it was
(01:29:09):
going to be because the Rockies will be in the
one ten loss category by then or one oh five,
somewhere in that range. Yeah, and you heard the news
on CJ. Gardner Johnson. Nothing official from the Texans, but
it does not sound good. And there's your news a
new Oh yeah, see Guardi Jarnsen. The leg might have
fallen off, didn't knee probably cracked in multiple places, a
(01:29:32):
lot of aweys, a lot of pain, PC l U
C L M C L L c l A c L.
But yeah, when they go to a knee Ross, I'm
going to say, the last one hundred times somebody has
gone to a knee and anything, ninety eight of them
resulted in a season. Indians following to my knees, even
litle league kids, when the follow their knees, they have
to kind of you have to be careful, you know
what I mean. I mean you've seen I guess so
(01:29:53):
kids get hit. All right, you flustered me there, I
didn't make you little devastating injuries you don't know'm talking about,
all right? Seven one three two one two five seven
doti seven one three two one two five seven nine.
There can I please talk to some in Houston, Texas,
(01:30:13):
and I'm tired of talking the guy on my right.
We just had Aaron Wilson on. Literally I talked for
three minutes this segment. They were so late. He did
most of talk. That was more than I did on
this show. That's actually probably a good thing Matt Thomas
show with Aaron comeing up. You know, advertising makes the
world go around, and for not for our great seven
ninety sponsors, this show wouldn't be on the air. This
(01:30:34):
is the reality of it. We want all of you
to come out and see us tomorrow and tell you
Brewing have some pints. Great sponsor of art. We appreciate
their relationship. We really we appreciate all of our relationship
set Affordable Tree Service. So I'm curious about something. We
had the A's Nationals game on. Yes, the Nationals have
never had a corporate sponsor on their stadium name. It's
always been Nationals Park. I believe is that true? I
(01:30:56):
think I'm pretty I'm pretty confident about that. Yeah, you're
a nerd about that stuff, I'll trust you. So that
in itself is surprising because very few ballparks don't have
some sort of corporate sponsorship to them. But I'm looking
at their patches of their uniform. Do you see who's
sponsoring their patches? Yes, I do. It's AARP, the American
(01:31:17):
Association for Retired Persons, that is correct, yes, or retired people,
person's people, whatever. It's a lot that What would I
mean Now I'm paying I'm talking about them, so I
guess they win. But there you go, Matt. But it
is a little weird. Yeah, if you put together a
(01:31:38):
list of potential people that put on an arm patch,
I don't know if AARP would have been on my
top twenty my list. How do they make money? You
pay dues and they get you good. Yeah, just counts
on Centsinnie. I get sent stuff all the time because
that's technically when you want to hit fifty?
Speaker 11 (01:31:51):
You are?
Speaker 1 (01:31:52):
You remember?
Speaker 10 (01:31:52):
Non?
Speaker 1 (01:31:52):
Why not I signed you up? I know you did.
You said you signed for me when I was thirty one.
I was really offended by that. I didn't know you
that Stay with me, please, no, just hear me once.
I'm sorry. Yes, Matt, that was a great prank by me.
I should have had forty then you definitely would.
Speaker 11 (01:32:08):
Oh, I do know you?
Speaker 1 (01:32:09):
Then you knew me gonna throw up. I knew you
in your thirties, Yeah, you did. What the hell? I
have aged beautifully, haven't I I looked at my childer
that I did fifteen years ago. Fifteen years about that,
sixteen years on this show. Baby, I'm happy about it
(01:32:35):
because it means we've got great audience. You're always seemed
to be very sad. Saved me. I had that job
in Jacksonsissippi for you didn't take too many people. They
didn't call me back. That's true. Okay, all right, So
I want to do a little bit of a barometer
test for you Astro fans out there. Okay, how nervous
(01:32:56):
are you? One to ten? It's a two game leads,
and I don't remember the last time it's been this
little since the Astros inherited first place. Yeah, yeah, one
to ten. Honestly to me, Houston, Texas, I'm gonna five,
you know what. I am remarkably comfortable. Now it gets
(01:33:17):
closer and closer, it could all change in a heartbeat. Remember,
the Mariners are playing really good baseball. They've got two
power hitting corner finfielders. Now they're at home. The Astros
are playing in New York against a Yankees team that
their home fans may boo them louder than they may
move the Astros, and that's saying something because Osiel two
(01:33:37):
bays in town. I'm just yeah, I'm gonna say I'm
gonna five out of ten because the reality is this
what see I did. They were seven and fifteen in
their last twenty two before at the end of the
Red Sox series, so they won two or three, that
(01:33:58):
puts them at nine. They're nine and sixteen in the
last twenty five games. If I if I'm doing the
math on that properly, that is not a great percentage. Nine.
If you play a stretch of twenty five games and
you win nine every time, you're gonna be significantly under
five hundred. So this is not a little rut. This
team really hasn't been the same since the week before
(01:34:22):
the All Star break. And my guess is what they
went to LA won those three games against the Dodgers. Right, Yes,
that was the like the highlight of the season, the
high point. It felt good. But ever it feels like
ever since that point. It's not like there's been more injuries. Now,
what it happened during that time, Jeremy Pany was out
(01:34:44):
for a significant period of time. You did lose Lance
mccullors on the injury list, but that it's not a loss.
He pitched great in that series. Yeah, people forget you
got Carlos Kraa back, by the way, isn't he looked
really good. He looks like not the fount of youth,
because that would be like an old timer going on
and doing one more time. He's not old. He's just
(01:35:05):
in the not even the twilight. He's just in the
back half of his career. He's been around a long time. Yeah,
we told you folks that he had been hitting a
lot better since May, and he's picked up. Yeah, he's
right where he left off since May. So you're gonna
get Christian Havier back when the team returns home. You
got Arrogatti back yesterday. Now he got beat up a
(01:35:25):
little bit, and that's to be not completely surprised. It
was a weird start. Eleven hits, a lot of hard
hit contact, four infield hits, and sixteen whiffs. If you
get sixteen whiffs, like you're getting a bunch of strikeouts
and you're having a good He's always been a high
strike guy, yes, but he's also also been a high
(01:35:47):
pitch guy too, and I got really high in the
first inning he had. It was a mix of everything.
It was good whiffs, it was bad luck with four
infield hits in one game, I mean, come on, and
then they he got tattooed a few times for sure.
M So it's kind of a mixed bag. Y had
it all up. He would have liked to have done better,
(01:36:08):
he said as much a himself. Yeah, And the great
thing about his injury is is that that's something that
doesn't you know. First of all, you're always gonna worry
about people's arms and elbows. That goes without saying it
doesn't even matter. Yeah, but in this particular case, you're
not worried, like, for instance, when Garcia comes back, Hobbier
comes back, you are gonna and for that and for
that matter, of the rest of Lance mccullor's career, as
(01:36:28):
long as he's an astro, you're gonna worry about his arm.
You just are. Yes, Well, how long that career is,
we'll see. But ROSSI, there's nobody pushing for Lance mccullors
to be released at this point. I mean, I'm not
suggesting that, I'm just saying that there isn't enough in
the depth of the Astros that anybody should be worrying
(01:36:48):
about anybody's long term You should be worrying about the
hair and the now. Arroget he's thrown for you. He
threw eighty six pitches yesterday. Joe spottas saying he expects,
or I don't remember the exact phrase, he expects and
or hopes that Christian Havevier's next start will be with
the Houston Astros. And apparently, as I was listening to
Robert Ford yesterday, he threw a bunch of pitches in
(01:37:10):
the Triple A game, and then he went to the
bullpen and threw ten more pitches to build his arm
up a little bit. Good. That beats the alternative. You
know what, I gotta pull him up to fift fifty pitches,
so I mean there is something to be said for that.
So it sounds like Javier's next Garcian France. I don't know,
but you're starting to get a little more. Depth doesn't
(01:37:32):
necessarily mean it's going to be a positive every single
time out, but you would hope that five days from
now or the next time that spends arroghedty pitches, he
will be better and not get in the same trouble
that he got in the game against the Marrow. He's
gonna be better, he said he was going to be
stuff to build on. I mean, I'm gonna say Tomorrosha's
gonna better today. But I can't prevent to you. I
personally guarantee you Spencer Arraghetty's start will be next, next
(01:37:55):
start will be better than you want to call your
son on a quality start. No, okay, so it's gonna
be better, but we mean it won't be great. You
need quality, quality be nice. Quality is difficult. Still thinking
about the bullpen, still thinking about fine, you're gonna yeah,
(01:38:16):
I mean Nick Hernandez when he gets up here the
playoffs about too much for the regular season. Okay, if
you're gonna have guys that are gonna be worried about
pitch counts and worrying about meeting extra days off here
and there, just not to prolong and reaggravate things. You're
gonna need you long. You're gonna need long relievers. Well,
Eric get he went eighty six pitches. If you're getting
(01:38:36):
up to ninety pitches, you need to be getting five
innings minimum. Yeah, so he's got a pitch better eleven
hits not ideal and man, he had some bad luck
with those infield singles. Yeah, and and Fromber has got
to bounce back. It was there's been good Fromber this year.
There's been bad Fromber. There's been excellent Frobmber. We've seen
more excellent from It's been mostly great. Yeah, his era
(01:38:59):
is under three this far into the season. But it
was a meltdown of and I don't want to say
typical Fromber proportions, but it was we've seen that act
before and we don't and hopefully that was a one off.
The worst part was he couldn't feel the ball, but
we've also seen that from him before, and then he
had Look he's a ground ball pitcher. Sometimes the ground
balls find the outfield. Yeah, there was nothing. There was
(01:39:21):
these big tank job home runs. An't worried about it,
and Fenway is so I didn't realize until I was
there for the very first time. It's so gimmicky. What
Pesky's polls center field, the green the little bit of
foul territory. I guess I'm an old fogie, but I
(01:39:41):
still don't like seeing it plastered with a bunch of advertisements.
The green Monster. Well, you remember when I was growing up,
there was nobody above the Green Monster. It was a
primo seats. Yeah, I remember there. Everybody in Boston was
up in arms about that, and then they were up
in arms about the advertise, like hey guys, we got
to make money. Yeah, And it was funny. I was
listening to Gordion's to it in the mon that he
says that half the fancy ran like we need a
new ballpark. Half or like we this is our this
(01:40:03):
is our museum. We can't get rid of it. And
the number one reason for those who are going to
and we gotta get to break here is that it's
very uncomfortable to watch a game there. There's a lot
of obstructed seats. And in nineteen forty three we were
more fit society. Well, we also had less food. It's true,
but there was no more scarce, but you didn't have
(01:40:25):
everybody was about five to three and one hundred and
eight pounds. There were no Rick Ronalds and Rugger ring
around the stadiums Uh huh. You're eating bowls of dirt
for dinner. It's a little bit different. You were eating
corn that you raise on the farm. Twelve thirty two
on the Matt Thomas Show. A Ross seven one three
two p one two five seven ninety, Come on and
join us. Seven one three two one two five seven ninety.
(01:40:45):
All right, I'm very curious, Jonathan.
Speaker 14 (01:40:48):
You are the.
Speaker 1 (01:40:49):
Screener of the phone calls on the show. Correct, They
must talk to you before they talk to us. Of course,
it says Willie and friends. Will who's called the show
a few times? Hey, Willy, it says Richter scale, you
of h uh? Oh, so it's two things. It's one
of the Richter scale he wanted to talk about. Didn't
one spoil the topic? No, Willy, Well, I think it's
(01:41:11):
Willy is a girl? No, what was it called? Call
it time? He's got it's a different Willie. Sorry. And
then we're talking about you of H and whose recruits
are coming into the basketball program. Hmm okay, Richter scale
and you of H. Conversation Willie on seven ninety and
(01:41:32):
twelve thirty seven, Good afternoon.
Speaker 11 (01:41:35):
Hi, uh yeah, this is Willie.
Speaker 1 (01:41:38):
I am a I am yeah, it's a girl, Jonathan.
We've we've got we knew who this was. I apologize, Jonathan, Jonathan,
he apologized. It was such confidence too. He don't know no, no,
he said it. He said it like we were dumbasses.
Audio confused, got the audio, Jonathan.
Speaker 10 (01:41:56):
I won't cut the audio.
Speaker 1 (01:41:57):
This is up. You were like, you're like, no, say,
I'm sorry.
Speaker 11 (01:42:01):
You gave us the side.
Speaker 12 (01:42:02):
I know and you know it.
Speaker 11 (01:42:04):
Shot ofan.
Speaker 1 (01:42:06):
I knew it. I knew it.
Speaker 11 (01:42:07):
I knew it.
Speaker 1 (01:42:08):
Man, I apologize, this is a.
Speaker 10 (01:42:11):
Mistake.
Speaker 1 (01:42:12):
I'm sorry, Willie. What do you gotta Let's talk about
the Richter scale first? What do you got?
Speaker 11 (01:42:19):
I was referring to the astros on the Richter scale.
I think most people think the astro. I feel the
most astros fans are nervous about the astros. I mean
on the Richter scale. I think there is some some
concerns there. But anyway, I haven't heard any talk about
Arraghetty today. I just turned to radio on A twelve.
(01:42:40):
But my husband said this morning that, uh, you of
ages looking at recruiting coach satzuh A keim Elanjahwan's youngest son.
Speaker 1 (01:42:48):
He has been offered. I don't know if he took
the offer, but he has been offered a job yet
I offered a scholarship.
Speaker 3 (01:42:53):
Yes.
Speaker 11 (01:42:54):
Oh, I was surprised. I was surprised to hear that
this morning. I knew he had some children, I didn't
realize you had one playing basketball. So yeah, let's keep
our fingers crossed. I think that's Ivy super for the program.
Speaker 1 (01:43:08):
It'll certainly have at a celebrity in every game, that's
for sure. I don't I don't know how good he is.
I don't follow high school basketball at all, Willies, I
can't tell you. But you know what, Kelvin has one
of the top five recruiting classes for the second consecutive year.
We're going to be preseason number one or two, depending
on what poll. Things are going really well, just going
(01:43:29):
to finish it off, you know, get all the way
back to where we got last year, but just playing
maybe twenty more better seconds of basketball.
Speaker 11 (01:43:37):
Yep, that's true. Well, I'm one of these sore losers
still that I think the game was rigged.
Speaker 1 (01:43:41):
But that's all right me too, Thank you, Willie. I'm
right there with you. That championship game in San Antonio
was rigged. I couldn't. I couldn't agree with you more.
Speaker 2 (01:43:53):
I don't.
Speaker 1 (01:43:55):
Who is that that? The Emmanuel Sharp Well, he he
was so he stared at the ball on the floor. Well,
he's still staring at the ball. Actually said he couldn't
pick it up because he'd be called for a double drip.
I know, but how did that? How is that rigged?
Speaker 3 (01:44:12):
No?
Speaker 1 (01:44:12):
The refereeing in the game was there were two different half.
First half, nothing was called. Second half everything was U
of h fouls. Everybody, everybody in you of ahe gets
in foul trouble every game, and then you'll blame the refs. No,
you're you're mugging people on the floor, physical straight up
committing assaults, felony assaults on the floor, and don't want
fouls to be called. Not true on any of those things.
(01:44:34):
It's called good clean. You think Calvin Sampson teaches fouling,
no chance. Does he teach physicality and aggressiveness? Well, of course,
but it's physical, physicality and aggressive leads to foul trouble.
They see ice cube agrease, Yeah, ice cube? You know
what you can do with your cubes? What what he's
(01:44:56):
got hog cubes?
Speaker 3 (01:44:58):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (01:44:58):
Are his cubes like your size of your you know what?
Speaker 15 (01:45:01):
Right?
Speaker 1 (01:45:02):
As he's Elijah one is a four star recruit? What
is high school clements? I didn't know those things. Oh,
Clement's it's a smart school. Well, which one's the dumble Ones?
I don't even say it. Oh yeah, you know you're
you're not gonna You're not gonna make fun of dullas?
Speaker 12 (01:45:16):
Are you?
Speaker 1 (01:45:16):
Nobody's And then I was gonna do High Tower and
then Sugarland Smack. Just as long as you don't say nimmits.
I'm surprised NIMID still has acreditation. I think that it's
in jeopardy in the air probationary period. I thought, didn't
a chem Olijah one have another son who was like
in some hot water? Am I thinking of somebody else?
Speaker 6 (01:45:40):
No?
Speaker 1 (01:45:40):
You know, the biggest misnomer is that just because you
have a great player's sun come play if you mean,
it's gonna be a whole big of difference. Clyde Drexer's
kid played for the U of H, and he wasn't
very good. Uh. Michael Jordan's son played for UCF Central Florida.
He wasn't very good. Oh yeah. Keem Olijeman's other son
lost the ruling after a road rage incident. Oh I
(01:46:02):
hate to hear that. Well, there're sons that you know
of that you Uh. Carmelo Anthony's son is a top
recruit we had, uh didn't we just have somebody? It
was who was the we did the believe it or
not for them? Was a Gilbert Arenas. His son is
a five star recruit. Okay, but yeah, but I'm talking
about off of the past, like when you hear of, Oh,
(01:46:23):
this kid's son is gonna play here. Oh David Robinson.
Robinson's son played a duke, didn't he was never very good?
Jabari Smith Jr.
Speaker 8 (01:46:30):
Is good?
Speaker 1 (01:46:31):
Jabar does? Okay? Who is who is the best player
in the NBA? Tim Hardaway Junior? Who's the best player?
That's okay that their father played NBA basketball? I mean
I guess it's does Kobe Bryant count? Yeah? Yeah, but
he was kind of like a fringe, but he's still playing.
Who is the best NBA player? Son of an All Star?
(01:46:57):
Gary Payton third? No, hmmm, Kobe Bryant Jellybean wasn't an
All Star. Mike Dunleavy. Did Mike Dunlevy ever play and
make an All Star game? I'll give all credits to
uh Google, Dale Curry was an All Star? Correct?
Speaker 11 (01:47:18):
Mmm?
Speaker 1 (01:47:20):
I don't, I don't know, I don't remember fu del
Curry's career. Well, this sounds pretty good. This sounds really good. No,
never mind del Curry. Six Man of the Year. Oh,
that's a pretty good award. That's honestly ross. That's better
than All Star. Oh, come on, that's a full season award.
Speaker 14 (01:47:38):
Star.
Speaker 1 (01:47:39):
Great for you? Would you rather be an All Star
a six Man of the Year? I would tell you both.
Are you kidding me?
Speaker 11 (01:47:43):
Are you kidding?
Speaker 1 (01:47:44):
I would say that man means you're the best guy
who's not good enough to start in the league. No,
it means you are the instant spark plug off your bench.
At it means you're one of the best players in
in the league. Love to be an All six Man
of the Year. And I'm not saying that's a bad award.
All Star is better. Okay, what about Michael Thompson? Oh,
Michael Thompson also an All Star? I'm looking it up. Hmmm.
(01:48:08):
I mean long ENBA Carrier. No, he was All rookie.
Speaker 10 (01:48:12):
But that's it.
Speaker 1 (01:48:16):
Okay, Well, we have to come up with somebody can
just yeah tweets. We need a son who's a good player.
But his pop was an All Star. The Berries Veta
oh Rick Berry was a Hall of Famer was an
All Star and was Brent? Was Brent ever an All Star?
(01:48:36):
John and Brent John? Probably not? Maybe both had decent
NBA court. Want a dunk contest? He's done from the
free throw line? Oh how about r Vetus and demonis
the bonus. That's a good combination there too, both all stars. Yeah, okay,
we'll go with that. We got some all right, twelve
forty four. We'll get back on the phones in a minute.
Seven one three five seven ninety seven one three two
one two five seven nine. Thank you, Coach Sark? Really fast,
(01:49:05):
are you.
Speaker 15 (01:49:07):
Now?
Speaker 1 (01:49:07):
Look it's all resorts, results oriented. But the Sark based
off of the two playoff appearances, is he in your
top three of your favorite UT coaches? Well? Yeah, w
Mac Brown one, m Sark two, I guess so. And
(01:49:28):
who's three? I mean, since I've become a fan, which
is one nineteen one, I don't know. I mean I
was a kind of a casual fan in high school,
and then of course I became a big fan when
I hit campus in two thousand and three. Okay, so
you're looking at twenty ninety nine ish, but mac Brown
got there in like ninety eight. Is that really wasn't
even the best of him. Yeah, so yeah, he's gotta
(01:49:54):
put him too. I don't really have any my favorite
VIC go ahead, I'm gonna go with I'm gonna go
with David mcwims one. Yeah he was. He left in
ninety one. I was five years old, six years old.
I'm gonna go with, Uh, who's the one after that?
(01:50:15):
You remember he sucked one after who was? This is
gonna say, and you're gonna know it. Give me the
first letter, Jay Oh, John mcavic has two. So you've
got Mac Brown number one. Mc Brown the best, greatest
ever time and the Texas Longhorns football is gonna be
in a great place that used to This is for
(01:50:36):
the for the kids out there. Can we ever do
a show when we mentioned Mac Brown's name and never
do a Mac Brown person. It's never gonna happen. They
used to call the website mac Brown Texas football dot com.
They had the literal football website was named after him.
That's how big he was. Charlie Strong, Charlie Strong three
(01:50:57):
Tom Remember the smart and Strong era that was supposed
to be like the takeover for Texas Athletics. Well, how
about the fact that Tom Herman was the hottest coach
in America. And he's going from Ohio State offensive coordinator
winning a national championship, to taking U of H to
A to a BCS Bowl to getting the dream job
(01:51:19):
even after l s U was courting him hard. And
now then he goes from that to Florida Atlantic And
now what is even Tom Herman doing? Now he got
fired from Florida Atlantic. Oh he did. Yeah, I have
no idea. He's got plenty of money, but damn, I
mean a fall from grace is an understatement. Yeah, well
he made a lot of cash along the way he's doing.
All right, guy, like sark Tom Herman, I mean, you
(01:51:47):
did win some games. Didn't you want to go? You wanta?
You wanta? Did you want? You won the Sugar Bowl
with Tom Herman, remember that. Yeah, we're back, said Sam Ellinger,
And then they worked, didn't our man? Joe Testa toaur
say we're back. Texas is back when Charlie Strong won
the game, when they beaten a Notre Dame and they
were lifting them up like Rudy. Yeah, that was a
(01:52:10):
little worrisome, little worried, a little premature, a little bit,
all right, twelve fifty four of the Matt Thomas Show,
A ross Believe It or Not today is highly googable
about our previous category conversation piece about NBA fathers and sons,
unless they come up with something better in the next
You got time, We got fifty five minutes, so we
play the game. Let's talk to Biscuit on seven. I
don't get twelve fifty five, Biscuit. What's a good word?
Speaker 2 (01:52:32):
Hey, cohog?
Speaker 15 (01:52:33):
Mad?
Speaker 2 (01:52:33):
Who mad?
Speaker 1 (01:52:34):
Yes, sir, so you brought up back with vich man.
I so loved those days, man too.
Speaker 2 (01:52:40):
We were run them too.
Speaker 1 (01:52:42):
We were putting sixties on the old Texas long horns.
Speaker 4 (01:52:45):
I love that, man.
Speaker 15 (01:52:47):
It was fun time at the dome back then.
Speaker 2 (01:52:49):
Baby.
Speaker 15 (01:52:50):
Hey, hey, man, I remember uh back in the day
man uh La Juan's brother and Larry Bird's brother both
both played at UH for Indiana State. Man so, and
they were both garbage.
Speaker 1 (01:53:10):
So you know that's not very nice. If if the
wonderful personalities and are good members of society today, you
don't want to call guessam at garbage, well, garbage basketball player.
Oh that's not much nicer than yeah. Sure, but but
I'll tell you what to do.
Speaker 15 (01:53:25):
I put my trust in Kevin Sampson, and Kevin put
out an alpher the scholarship, then it must be something
you can do with them, you know, So I'll go
with that. I'm told you, Matt I'm hey, look listen, Ross,
I already got my reservation set.
Speaker 2 (01:53:38):
Man.
Speaker 15 (01:53:39):
I'm back in that town man and Matthew. You know,
since we're going to be the home team for the
Sweet sixteen, since we let right be the homes host,
and we could be the home team, Man, no excuses
got over there, ROSSI got no excuses. The thing for me,
the number one thing for me was when Tugler said
(01:54:02):
he was coming back. I saw it's a done deal.
Now it's a done deal, baby, I'm confidant. Cougar's gonna
be ready this year.
Speaker 2 (01:54:10):
Baby.
Speaker 1 (01:54:10):
All right, that's all Like tear biscuit, I need national championship.
And those of you didn't have not heard. Uh. The
University of Houston was supposed to host the South Regional
at Tota Center this March. But you cannot be in
a building in which you are the host. So if
the Cougars were to finish as a top seed, or
even if they weren't tops, you couldn't go to the
South region. Well that's now out of play. They have
(01:54:31):
given it up to I believe Rice or somebody else.
I think it was Rice. Okay, so they screwed the system.
They cheated. No, it's been done before. Yeah, they cheated.
Nothing chating the system, nothing's nothing that getting you. You're
cheating for home court advantage. You respectfully say, you respectfully say,
we do not want to Rice even gonna make the No,
Rice has been determined that in nineteen seventy one, I
think seventy one fly, I'll fly. Could you imagine being
(01:54:56):
in a school, well, actually you are, Jonathan. That hasn't
me so much success athletically in fifty years? I know
one win against Duke. Take what you can get. You
guys got a ternament win, don't you. It was before
your time.
Speaker 2 (01:55:10):
Whole whole, whole, whole, whole hold on.
Speaker 1 (01:55:13):
Cougars haven't won a national championship in anything since, like
indoor women's. I didn't drag that. I didn't say anything. Yes,
you can imagine you you can't imagine being rooting for
a school that hasn't won anything of substance in fifty years.
We were in the national we were the national semifinalist champions. Okay,
regional regional champions, regional champions. So yes, Matt, ask yourself
(01:55:38):
that question. All right, bad news today from the Texans.
It is the Matt Thomas Sward Ross seven to one
three two one two five seven Ross give out the
I say gory details, They're not gorgy, but disheartening if
you're a Texans fan. Yeah, Unfortunately, he went down during practice.
We had Aaron Wilson on earlier talked about grabbing his knee.
(01:56:01):
Then everybody on the team had a very somber moment,
went to their knee, and he was carted off the field.
I think I saw another report somewhere that even getting
off the card he had be helped. So doesn't sound
good for CJ. Gardner Johnson. Here is the latest update
from Texans head coach Jimiko Rants.
Speaker 13 (01:56:20):
Of course, it's you know, it's it's heartbreaking when you
see a guy go down on the field like that
and doesn't get up quickly. So I'm always, you know,
nervous as a head coach anytime I see anybody hit
the ground. It's it's tough to watch. So we'll see,
you know, we'll evaluate c day see where he is.
But no update at this time.
Speaker 1 (01:56:41):
Yeah, totally understandable. This came about ninety minutes ago when
he said that they've got facilities there. Yeah, they're not
leaving until tomorrow anyway to go to Minneapolis. So, uh,
he's done for the year. I mean, it's just if
there was a if there was an odds pick something
(01:57:03):
something dot ag what kind of sick human being wants
to bet on injuries? Oh are you kidding me that?
I'm surprised those weird old websites haven't sent me fifteen
emails about it by now. Well, it's coming. Just give
them time to gather the odds. It doesn't sound good everybody.
We we've talked about it, like guys have gotten carted
off and actually been fine or only been out for
a little while, but leaving on the cart and everybody
(01:57:27):
is down not good. Also, by the way, Rashaun Slater,
stand out left tackle for the Chargers, has gone and
gotten carted off in camp. So it's just one of
those things. Every year it happens. There's nothing to do it.
Even if you you hit the pads on it's there's
still the stuff. Could all can happen. It's but today
was a scrimmage. I mean, today was a day they
(01:57:47):
needed to work hard because, let's face it, Friday, they're
traveling to Minneapolis. Saturday, they're not going to play Sunday,
they're not going to play. So if you're a coach
and you're organizing, what am I going to use my
day is to hit some people and get them ready
for the season. Today would have been the day. So
through no fault of the Texans, through no fault of Demiico,
through no fault of you know whose fault it is
(01:58:09):
the it's the rough, tough sport of football that's gonna happen. Yeah,
it's the nature of the game. There's nothing to do.
They've done as much as they could do rules wise
to legislate out injuries, but it ain't gonna It's like
trying to what is it they call it the crash
derby or whatever. Everybody runs into each other trying to
prevent car accidents in the demotion derby, demolition derby, thank
(01:58:30):
you Uh, it's like trying to prevent crashes in the
demolition derby. Ain't gonna happen. Injuries are gonna happen. Yeah,
there's really no way to say, but it didn't happen
to particularly good category. We had Aaron Wilson on We
Want to Play. Yeah, we'll just summarize. He just said, look,
of all spots to have injury, that's probably not the
spot to be, and that maybe they move Jalen Petrie
(01:58:52):
back from going from a nickel corner do safety on that. Yeah,
where his coverage skills are would be considered mid. I
like him better close to the line of scrimmage. Okay,
fair enough, very physical, very intimidating, but there are some
areas where guys can have some success in past routes. Yeah,
(01:59:16):
he yes, and I think sometimes well, I mean, he'd
be in a different role, but I would say Jalen
Petrie very aggressive, which is can be a blessing and
a curse. He's good at getting run stops and getting
in the backfield and stuff like that, but sometimes play
action he can be a little bit out of sorts.
But yet the Texans still gave him good money in
the offseason.
Speaker 10 (01:59:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:59:36):
I wonder if that's the characterization of most safeties. I think, Oh,
go ahead, what do you know? I was gonna say,
I I do, are there complete safeties in the NFL.
There have been, there have been for many many year.
I mean Ed Reid was a complete safety. Ronnie Lott
was a complete safety. You never had to worry about
him being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
(01:59:57):
You never to worry about their tackling skills. You they
always had great intuition as to where the ball was
going or war in spacing. But is that you know again,
I don't. I don't have a listen from me. It
would be considered the best complete safeties in the NFL.
But Kyle Hamilton Ravens, Yeah, I don't know. Outside I
mean find but Petre obviously was thought of well enough
(02:00:19):
by the organization. They wanted to lock him up for
you know, with a bump and raise. So we'll see.
But there were some times that couldn't the Texans have
drafted Kyle Hamilton. I just thought sometimes and maybe Raws
I'm wrong on this. I thought sometimes the hype on
Jalen Petree was a little much. I think he's good.
(02:00:42):
I don't think he's great. I don't think he's all time,
but he makes a lot of plays and so yeah,
he pops, he does, he makes I think his name
was being called a lot because he was in the
play itself. M hm and so, and he can make
you know, he's athletic as hell. He makes some great interceptions.
Texans took Derek only third. Kyle Hamilton fell fourteenth to
(02:01:03):
the Ravens and people were talking about him in the
top four or five, and everybody said, as soon as
that all he fell out of the Ravens, he's gonna
be great. And then Kyle taml Hamilton's one of the
best safeties in football. You know, it's crazy the money
that is being spent on secondary guys. You mentioned Hamilton,
we mentioned Petrie Stingley got his new deal in the
off season. Sauce Gardner got a new new deal in
the off season, as Waal f and the Jets. Mm hmm.
Speaker 3 (02:01:26):
You.
Speaker 1 (02:01:27):
I don't know. I would not raise my children to
be defensive backs. I mean, it's a great position if
you can do it well. But man, you it's a
diamond dozen you can. You can become a star one
year and then one year you get picked on a
bunch and all of a sudden you're looking for work. Well,
I think you'll be safe. I mean, I don't have
the foot speed to be a corner. I get that,
(02:01:47):
but I'm good in space. Oh, Cooper de Jean's back,
let's bring him back, hope. Is he really yeah? Okay, yeah,
I mean he's yeah, he's out there. So a CJ.
Garner Johnson And my guess is, look, the Texans are
not available tomorrow to the media. The next time you'll
hear about this will be on Saturday, probably following them
(02:02:07):
the Vikings game. So my guest is seven o'clock at
night on next this is coming Saturday, first of three
preseason games. And again, poor shout out to those Viking
fans that go to the game, because you are getting nothing.
I mean, is JJ mc drunk watching football? Yeah, but
you can get drunk at home a lot cheaper. I
(02:02:27):
don't know if JJ McCarthy is going. I think it
depends from team. Ever, Spince, it was kind of a
you know, you don't play guys for this first game.
He brought me att on the second. Then the third
game is a dress rehearsal and everyone that's it. But
there's half of all players don't even touch the feeld.
Now they've gone to three. Yeah, a lot of teams
handle it differently and yeh. Some some guys don't play.
(02:02:47):
I think it's Sean McVay. There's some others. They don't
play their starters at all. Yeah, in the preseason, well yeah, honestly,
I think the smart thing and we were going to
see more of this when we get to that eighteen
game schedule, we're going to see preseason games drop to
two and we're going to see more open practices. And honestly, Ross,
I don't know how many teams do it. Did the
Texas do it for free?
Speaker 4 (02:03:08):
Right?
Speaker 1 (02:03:08):
You don't have to necessarily pay to go see a practice.
I don't think they do free. I think I don't think.
Maybe you've got to claim tickets online, but they're free.
Speaker 3 (02:03:14):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (02:03:15):
But what if you started to put these practices in
the stadiums and started charging five bucks, Why then you
got to staff the stadium? Well, you could do is
a part charity, part part for your own profit. That's
what the Astros do with their fan fest now they
call it a donation to the Astros Foundation. Think about this,
and you know, look, the NFL is always trying figure
out ways to make money. You could charge five dollars
(02:03:37):
a person to come in and watch these practices. You
take that money and you give it to your charitable foundation.
But then you sell the beer and the hot dogs
and the cokes and the popcorn, and you keep that
for yourself. In the parking? Are you maybe maybe you
reduce a parking, maybe you make it. Hey, I don't know.
I'm just one in doubt. What can I do to
squeeze squeeze anything out?
Speaker 3 (02:04:01):
So?
Speaker 1 (02:04:02):
But yeah, the two when are we get in eighteen?
I keep waiting for the ball of drop. Yeah. Roger
Goodell's brought it up a couple of times, which means
another streaming service, another package of NFL games will be
a given away. If I was CBS and Fox making, Hey,
why don't you take care of us? We've been with
you for decades on Sundays at noon and three. You
keep giving us the Cardinals and the and the Panthers.
(02:04:24):
We need, we need some more meat on that bone.
Stop giving away the good games to Amazon. Ah, That's
what I was thinking of. JF brought it up. They
could have taken Kyle Hamilton thirteenth and Keny Green right
took Kenyan Green. Thanks Nick ouch ouch h.
Speaker 3 (02:04:57):
M.
Speaker 1 (02:04:59):
Can you ca guard at guard over drafted him too, right,
he was never considered top fifteen. Don't take a guard
in the top fifteen unless can't miss. When they missed
Kenya Green was missing on trying to guard on uh
pass protections. But I digress. Everybody has draft missus. Some
(02:05:24):
have more than others. Kyle Hamilton going fourth fourteenth the
first place is a miss for everybody. It was, but
some missing it. You know, God it, I'm if y'all
really want to pray for somebody, Pray for CJ. Gardner Johnson,
stud Stroud. Okay, it means Gardner Johnson, of course you could. Well,
he's the one hurt. Yeah, but he's still gonna He's
(02:05:45):
got plenty of money, he can He's gonna be fine.
So to Droud, you can breathe well, I mean CJ
could also be eating out of a blender before the season.
I don't think he's gonna be eating out of a blender.
He just wants a nice, delicious smoothie. Congratulations to our
teacher of the day. Cheryl Ener is a teacher at
Mayatt Elementary School. And you know, teachers rossy make the difference.
(02:06:09):

for your classroom. Help us say thank you. The educator

you may do so at iHeartRadio dot com slash teacher.
That's iHeartRadio dot com slash Teachers one point fifteen. Here
on Sports Talk seven ninety, Hey, it's Matt Thomas. Join
Ross and me this Friday at Talier Brewing from ten
(02:06:52):
am to two pm. We had so much fun a
few weeks ago. The Talier Brewing Gang invited is back.
Get ready for some great lunch specials, plus try some
of their award winning brews they make right there on
site in the brew house. We'll have Astros tickets to
give away and much more. That's just Friday ten o'clock
until two at Tiger Brewing at ten thirty three Imperial Boulevard.
Then stay and watch the Astros take on the Yankees
at six o'clock. That's Tiger Brewing next to Consolation Field.
(02:07:14):
See you Friday Sports Talk seven ninety. So we opened
the show today and I was like, I've got to
stop listening to the tenth inning shows on which I
don't host. It's not good for mental health. And at
the bottom of the eye, we're going to play the
call that nearly made me drive off the side of
(02:07:36):
the road. And I want to know if you had
the same reaction that I did. What will happen because
you didn't hear the tenth inning yesterday? You got the call? Yeah,
oh you said you didn't want to play it, We're
gonna play I'm scared. When is this one thirty? We
(02:07:58):
love our audience. It means the world that you guys
spend your day with us, especially to those that take
the time to call in to call in shows. We
appreciate you because again we don't want to do monologue.
We'd like when we have interaction from our audience, even
when unfortunately Jonathan gets the gender of the person calling incorrect.
Will you let that go. No, he was pretty smug
(02:08:19):
about it. It's okay, love you Willie will have been
a big fan of the show for a long time.
We called for a long time. We appreciate it. Yeah,
we knew it, and you didn't money. You figured somebody
who would trust us who had been hosting this show
for years and years and years. So we love you
and we want to see all of you out at
Tiger Brewing tomorrow from ten o'clock until. Oh yeah, it
(02:08:40):
was the master of tickets mm hmm. And I'll invite
the person to call the tenth Inning show to call
to come on the show, okay, or you know, come
on and say hello, give my head's that you actually
can co host?
Speaker 11 (02:08:51):
Sure?
Speaker 1 (02:08:51):
Why not go and get a couple of flights? Do
we need three hit? We have three. We can get
three hits. That's am all right. We can uh to
hell get three of here? Okay, the three here we
found the third one, thank goodness, of course, is a
headset from the nineteen eighties. But that's on the here
north there. You literally have one of those space headsets.
I mean it's not, you know, not literally. Look, we
have a headset that we used that Howard Cosell using
(02:09:12):
the nineteen seventy three Ye looks like that football. Yes,
that's correct, all right, So we're gonna play that one
thirty and then I'm gonna not comment. I'm gonna let
you organically comment on what you heard. And just again,
it might have been me just in a mood, but
I heard the call and I was like suruning it now,
surning in now, but more that's coming. Astros loses lead Ross.
(02:09:36):
Are you ready for this? It's good. It's gonna be
a lot more a much more dramatic season to me
than I thought it was gonna be. And a lot
of it's because a the Astros a regressed, but be
the Mariners got better. We were not anticipating the Astro
the Mariners going to get Soarez. What was that first
basement the guy I always forget his name from the Diamondbacks.
(02:09:58):
They got non Zach, Josh Naylor, Josh Naylor, Naylor, every
buddy Softy is already like, let's sign him up long term.
He must be doing great things up there. And people
in Seattle are legitimately like, this is not the Mariners
that we know. The thing is, the Astros got better. Hey,
Sue Sanchez is better than Cam Smith right now. That's
(02:10:19):
just the reality of it. I would agree with that.
And that's why if Alvarez comes back at any point,
you flip Flypack he's coming back. You flip him in
al Altuve out and left field or whatever comedy you
can use it rias, whatever it depends, whatever compedis you
want to use, You're gonna have a much better hitting
(02:10:42):
lineup Cams. And I mean this is not camp Smith's
fault because I'm a big Cam Smith guy. We are
hard rooting for Cam Smith. Yes, but it's just coincident
all I believe, because it takes nine to tangle in
a baseball game. Nine in the lineup. But his fall
is Cohen signing with the Astros, not winning ways the
(02:11:03):
last month. Not his fault, but just coincidentally.
Speaker 2 (02:11:05):
Yeah, he had a I.
Speaker 1 (02:11:06):
Don't know, how do you do yesterday? I think a
couple of days ago, everybody had a hit and he's
been He got the day off on Sunday. I think
it was, Yeah, maybe it was Monday. He had a
couple ed. He was seventy for seventy after the Red
Sox series. In his last seventy eight bats, so it's
wearing on him. He's he's creeping off. Totally by the way,
totally understandable. You are playing in the college baseball playoffs
(02:11:29):
in June of twenty twenty five, in June and July
or twenty twenty four. In June and July of twenty
twenty five, you're playing in a Pennant racer on a
major league baseball team, facing significantly better pitchers. Oh, by
the way, using a wooden bat.
Speaker 3 (02:11:43):
You know what I mean.
Speaker 1 (02:11:44):
I mean, this is life. Yeah, he just got one
hundred games played, and he played I think I like
one hundred games all last season, so natural, I'm not
really that worried about it. And if he doesn't turn
things around to a huge degree, then you can use
Hazu Sanchez against righty's and left and then Cammy's Cam
Smith against lefties. It'll be fine. How big here's the question.
(02:12:06):
How big of a role is hey Sue Sanchez going
to be for this team? And does he have to
have a big role in order for the Astros to
get over this. We're waiting for yarn and Alvarez to
come back.
Speaker 3 (02:12:17):
Card.
Speaker 1 (02:12:17):
Yeah, we'll see what happens is yord On Alvarez, you
obviously lose a lot of lineup flexibility. You can stick
Jose l TV at DH and play Sanchez and Cam
Smith if you have that DH spot. Same thing if
you want to put either or both of Victor Karattini
and y Are Diaz in that spot.
Speaker 15 (02:12:34):
M hm.
Speaker 1 (02:12:35):
So you lose some of the flexibility because you don't
want to play yord On out in the field, but
you can do it against if a guy like fromber
is pitching ground ball pitcher, you could do that and
then put L two V at DH. Well, at least
I'm I'm feel better that al Tuovey is adapted to
the DH role more he knows. Yeah, yeah, go ahead,
(02:12:58):
he's been doing that his whole life. Is guy's only
playing the guys. Yeah, but he's thirty five. He needs
as I'm saying, he's adapting to knowing that his limitations
are both in left field and second base. Yeah, his
best his best numbers this year as a DH. You
know doesn't have good DH numbers is uh Janar Diaz. Yeah,
there's a he enjoys himself more when he's catching. Well
(02:13:20):
it also, I mean, who knows that's it could also
be coincidental too. You never know, all right, uh, as
promised ROSSI we do have the audio of the caller,
and I just want to make sure that maybe I
was just in a mood or this. Uh this this
call was because you're gonna hear the phone call and
hear the voice, You're like, and I think you need
(02:13:40):
to hear the entire phone Can you hear Adam Wexer's
eyes rolling? He only said one thing. I listened to
Wex's response and he was very nice. That separates wex
in me. Wex is nicer than I am. Well, I
would say everyone on the station is nicer than you are,
even Clainton. I would say, everyone except Adam Clanton is
(02:14:02):
nicer than you. On the stage, thought Boo Way getting word, Yes,
you do not want to invite Jonathan to agenda reveal
he'd get it all right? Yeah, that was mad Jonathan.
I'm working with straight here. He can say he can
see pink and blue. I was pretty proud of that.
(02:14:25):
Seven one three two one two five seven Dotti seven
one three two one two five seven Ross, what does
believe it or not? Today? Coming up at one fifty
oh crimey. That's uh, that's in twenty minutes on Sports
Talk seven NINTI. All right, rustles the entire thing. Then
give me your completely non biased thoughts. If you were
hosting the tenth inning show, Ladies, Jay we present. Do
(02:14:47):
we react to the call as if I'm hosting the
ten then in camp? But what but listen, let him
say the whole thing first. This, my friends, is a
great moment in the tenth inning show. Now, great moment
from the tenth then in show. He would jump back
(02:15:09):
into the conversation on the phones out to Huffman. Steve
is with us here on the Astros tenth Inning Show.
Wex here with you.
Speaker 10 (02:15:15):
What's going on?
Speaker 2 (02:15:15):
Steve?
Speaker 12 (02:15:17):
Well, I like Joe. Okay, he's a nice guy. He's
a good coach. He's not a manager. And I'll tell
you why I'm saying this. First of all, Pena had
a day off tomorrow. We needed him to play today.
Speaker 2 (02:15:33):
We need to win this game.
Speaker 12 (02:15:35):
Seattle's playing a junior high team tonight. They're likely going
to beat and then gain a game, and now it's
going to be two games. Really, that was really a
poor decision on Joe's part. You know, if there wasn't
a day off tomorrow. Maybe I could see his reasoning,
but we need him in a lineup, you know, particularly
(02:15:55):
when we got what forty nine forty eight games left.
Every one of these aims are important, and Joe treats
it like it's spring training at the church.
Speaker 3 (02:16:05):
You know, he's gay.
Speaker 12 (02:16:06):
I don't know what's going on there. The other thing
is Alvarez. I'm reading that he's been taking batting practice
for quite some time, no injuries reported.
Speaker 2 (02:16:17):
Uh, what's that?
Speaker 12 (02:16:19):
What's the chance that he'll he'll be activated for this weekend?
I'm hoping one hundred percent.
Speaker 1 (02:16:34):
Now, Remember my my initial thought was I was yelling
at the radio. I was saying, get him, WEX, get him, WEX.
And then I checked my blood pressure into like one
ninety one forty and I had to calm down. There
was this is the way I generally if guys are
(02:16:57):
like inquisitive and ask stupid questions. You know, there's no
such thing as dumb questions. But when you get the
little a hint to the smugness, that's when I start
to really take issue. And that definitely was some hint
of smugness in that call of like, what is this
idiot Joe Spot to do it out there. And that's
(02:17:18):
again where I say you must pay attention, folks. They've
been doing this. Joe Spot has been doing it for
two years. Dusty Baker did it before him, and aj
Hinch did it before him.
Speaker 7 (02:17:31):
They know that they need these guys rested and ready
to go, not for August sixth, but for October.
Speaker 1 (02:17:42):
And then you add into the fact, does this guy
not even know that Jeremy Pina had the hamstring issue
on Saturday or Friday and then he missed all of
Saturday's game. We need you to pay attention, folks. And
again you're not alvas Well. Harry's swinging the bat well,
I do not put him in there. And then you're
probably the one that's crushing the Astros for rushing him
(02:18:04):
back because he's had multiple setbacks with this hand injury,
multiple setbacks, so they're gonna treat him with kid gloves. Again,
October is more important than August. Now, I understand you
have to get there and there is a line to toe,
but the Astros are in first place. And yes, that
(02:18:27):
caller has called in with bad calls multiple times, multiple
one on one off. I was on Kingwood Drive. I
don't know if I'd have been screaming at my radio.
Speaker 2 (02:18:41):
I was.
Speaker 1 (02:18:42):
I know because I know that guy. I mean, I
don't know know him, but I know his call. He's
I'm sure he's a nice coach. Last year the Astros
won the West. They have a two game lead this year.
There have been as many injuries on this team that
(02:19:03):
have had in anywhere else in baseball. Now, is any
manager perfect? Of course not.
Speaker 11 (02:19:06):
No.
Speaker 1 (02:19:09):
Are there as any manager or coach, or player or
anyone beyond approach for you criticizing them. No, you can
criticize anybody. But I would also say, let's do a
little bit of critical thinking. Let's realize that Joe Spot
is around these players every day. He talks to the
trainers every day, and and they decide when the days
(02:19:30):
are off and on and when they're gonna be. They
have planned off days, and as you mentioned earlier in
the show Matt Today that you oftentimes they do do
it right ahead of an off day to give them
those two days off. Certainly when a guy is coming
off a rib injury and a hamstring you'll see this
damp your king would drive. Now, I use I see
you on the King would drive. You're right there with me. Yeah,
(02:19:53):
I know it gets you there, it does. But this
little this, this, these little comments, these little smugness that
you toss in there, It's ridiculous. Like again, are you
just watching the games? Are you even watching the games?
Are you paying attention? This has been happening for years
(02:20:16):
and years and years. Not one Astro since twenty seventeen
has played all one hundred and sixty two games, not one.
How many players in Major League Baseball played one sixty two?
I don't know. Isn't there a guy who's got a
pretty long streak because he's like the Phillisers somewheres. I'll
look it up. You talk longest playing streak in MLB
(02:20:36):
somewhat with the red team. I feel like a red team. Okay,
that'll narrow it down with the red jerseys. That could
be wrong. Anyways, I'm gonna go National League and red. Okay,
I'm looking it up. The answer is the best cow
repkin twop current.
Speaker 15 (02:20:57):
Oh.
Speaker 1 (02:20:58):
I had to put the word current in there. Current.
See you are are e and t well I'm looking
at ai here? Why I don't know? Easier, m.
Speaker 3 (02:21:12):
Boy?
Speaker 1 (02:21:12):
This is not oh?
Speaker 15 (02:21:14):
Is it?
Speaker 1 (02:21:15):
Wit? Meryfield. No, that was a long matt Olsen, matt O,
how many has he got?
Speaker 15 (02:21:20):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (02:21:20):
Matt Olsen's over seven hundred. Okay, hmm, that's blue and red.
I get half credit. Uh who's he played for Braves?
Oh yeah, you get great. It's right in that uniform.
Speaker 2 (02:21:31):
Thank you.
Speaker 10 (02:21:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:21:33):
So there you go. And by the way, until until
Jeremy got hurt, guess what what Jeremy did every day
he played played. Matter of fact, I think even I
didn't even think. Joe's like when I said, you know,
you gave it him a day off and goes, no, no, no,
I I pinch hit him. And that one day he
was his streak was alive. He's like, Joe's aware. He
He's got guys that want to play every day, and
(02:21:54):
I'm sure Jeremy Payne is not one of them. Well
he hasn't need what I'm saying. Yeah, but but he
got in yesterday and all of a sudden, it did
fortify your bench. It did, It just did. But there
were some guys that I mean again, I am of
the belief, having watched enough baseball in my life, that
one guy in the lineup, especially on a RANDO early
(02:22:15):
August Day, Rossie, to me, doesn't make the difference between
winning a division and losing a division, especially if you
felt like you need to give Payne a day off,
but some time between now and the end of this
road trip and you want to you want him to
play three games in New York?
Speaker 15 (02:22:28):
Do you not?
Speaker 1 (02:22:29):
Yes, games played for the Astros this year. Jose L Tuve, Oh,
so that was the leader one to eleven, Christian Walker
one O nine, Diez one O two, Cam Smith ninety nine,
Parades ninety four, DuPont ninety one, Myers eighty nine, Jeremy
Penna A Myers eighty seven. May we heard peep out
(02:22:54):
of him? He's running on a flat run as progressions
as was the slope to ground. You don't what you
should bring him a smoothie?
Speaker 2 (02:23:03):
Why?
Speaker 1 (02:23:03):
Because you're the president of this fan club. I am,
But what if you put a hard workout and and
want something cold to drink? Something money than me, I'm not.
I'm not as smoothie bitch. Yeah, but smoothies don't cost
that much. He can afford it. Yeah, nobody's ever gonna
call you a smoothie bitch. Hey, Hey, mister Myers, would
you like a smoothie. When I was first calling Rockets games,
(02:23:27):
the Rockets would be would would get smoothies for all
the players, huh, and they would prepackage and order them,
and some of the guys didn't want them. So we'd
always go to shoot around, you know, the little morning
practice and steal their smoothies. Well, we would drive by
and they'd be like twenty smoothies left, and it made me.
I was kind of sad. I was like, I grab them. No,
because I didn't ask for a while why I started.
(02:23:50):
You would they could have said no. They said no, sure,
have one because nobody was drinking. Now they haven't made
at lunch time. So we have a smoothie station. Oh
that's great. Oh it's great. Sounds that's great. He's really good. Okay,
I guess smoothie right now? Sounds good. I though the
sugar content's kind of high. Can you get Can you
get a low sugar smoothe? Of course you can. Is
it tasty though? I mean it's better with sugar, but
(02:24:11):
also you know your glucose is gonna spot. I don't
need that. Let's go to h Larry and Galveston. Hi, Larry,
hey man, how you going Larry, I'm wonderful. Nice to
hear from you.
Speaker 14 (02:24:23):
I tell you what I'm doing great. Also, I cannot
believe what that insane individual did last night on the
tenth Inning Show. You know, he has absolutely no doubt
what's going on.
Speaker 13 (02:24:38):
Joe Spot.
Speaker 14 (02:24:41):
Probably right now at this point in time, deserves Manager
of the Year dealing with everything that he has had
to deal with for the entire year. And if he's
got a problem with that, well I'm.
Speaker 3 (02:24:58):
Sorry, but.
Speaker 14 (02:25:00):
He just needs to relax. And any of the Astros
fans out there that are worried about the Astros for
this year, they need to relax. You know, for the
last three or four years, we've gone out to California
and we've played the Athletics and for some unknown reason,
(02:25:27):
we went out there and we dropped like three out
of four games or four out of four games. Well,
this time it happened at home, and then it happened
in Boston. But we got Carea back, thank goodness, we
got Sanchez, we got Ureus and we're getting our pictures
(02:25:49):
back and arrogant he had a less than wonderful start yesterday.
But then on the other hand, it's the first time
that he's been back for like a month and the
after close to two months, and so everybody in Astro's
(02:26:11):
nation needs to just relax and we're gonna take it
to the Mari Nurse and the Rangers and I worked
for the Astros go pretty good ways.
Speaker 1 (02:26:23):
This year, me too, Larry. Thank you for the phone.
I got to roll over a break. Thank you very
much for the phone call. Let's say, quick time out
and come back and take a couple of quick calls
if we can and get to believe it or not?
Is it highly googleble Ross? It certainly is. Sports Talk
seven hunder. Vince in Midtown joins the Matt Thomas Shower
Ross at one high Vince, Hey, good afternoon.
Speaker 15 (02:26:47):
Hey.
Speaker 4 (02:26:48):
I'm not defending that guy yesterday on that call, but
first of all, I think the spot is definitely has
to be a top candidate for Manager of the year
based on what you know through this part of the
season and how well he's done with makeshift lineups every night.
But when I heard the opening or the lineup, I'm like, man,
they kept out of the lineup, And I think all
(02:27:10):
these games are very very important right now, and he's
been hitting the crap out of the ball, and so
I did question that. However, I would never go after
the coach for making the decision that he knows more
about that.
Speaker 1 (02:27:23):
Well, again, questioning things, Vince and thank you for the
phone call is more than acceptable. I mean, that's what
managers are made to be second guests. But you have
to kind of trust what the guy's doing that has
been around that team since the beginning and knows the
organization intimately. And we just said before, he's not the
only manager that put likes to put back to back
(02:27:44):
days together. And frankly, he didn't get it back to me.
He didn't get an off day, he didn't he didn't
get a day to decompress, get a hit let in
the game. Just just trust. But to say that someone
is not quite that would be like Rossie helped me
out with this. You know, I'm terrible analogies. I don't
(02:28:05):
know a sales manager that routinely goes hits one hundred
and five percent of his goal and then one month
he's at eighty nine percent and all of a sudden
he should be dropped down to a guy who works
in the warehouse. I just I just find it insulting
that a JABBRONI would call a show and say he
may be a good coach, but not a good manager
(02:28:27):
when his team is in first place and manages twenty
six bodies and twenty six players and in this case,
forty to forty five different players. I just I think
it's just disrespectful. I just think it is. Yeah, it's
not quite Well. We criticize politicians probably do a better
job of knowing the inner workings of politics than I do. Oh,

respectfully and going what the hell's going on? And maybe
I'm maybe I'm being too narrow minded on the match.

(02:29:08):
just because people think they can coach and manage a
baseball team because they play in little league. You don't hear.

out coach emy A dok Er, I can out coach
pat Riley. You hear all the time in baseball. That's true.
Speaker 14 (02:29:23):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (02:29:24):

criticize somebody who's an expert at what they do, which
Joe has bought is an expert at what he does.
