Matt Thomas Thomas Ross V Real.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross ten O one.
Speaker 1 (00:14):
An age child. Good morning, and welcome to a Monday
edition of the Matt Thomas showing. Ross. This's his Sports
Talk seven ninety eight. Are you feeling alright? Sports RV
the Local nine finally got us a way in Seattle yesterday.
(00:37):
By the way, an excuse to play Joe Cocker on
this radio show will be found. We found a way
because we are feeling alright. Your astros up four in
the al West. I'm feeling all right. You feel alright?
It's the way to describe it. Not feeling great, not
feeling immaculated, like if data sypto. I think it's a
feeling song. I could have gone I feel fine by
(00:59):
the Badles kind of gone feeling groovy. That had been
a little too past the show. The astros got by
with a little help from their friends from from sugar Land.
That's another Joe Cocker. I a banger, yes, which he
did better than the Beatles Dick. Two completely different songs,
I would agree, so one better than the other. Are
(01:22):
you starting already? No, you're right, Jonathan Jonathan's It's wonderful
to see you. Hope you had a very good WEEKND.
I wanted to make them get by with the help
from their friends from get by with the help from
their friends from sugar Land. That's all I wanted to say.
All right, so what we're going to do today? Coming
up in a few minutes. We had figured out on
the twenty six man roster last week thirty five percent
(01:46):
of the team probably would be at sugar Land if
everybody was healthy, or at least most parts were healthy.
How did the Space Cowboys getting bye? By the way,
are they doing okay over there? Does it really matter
at this point? Are they going the two man outfields?
We're going to and a few and it's we're gonna
figure out it. I put this up on Twitter. It
might be forty percent now, Yeah, because Shaye Wickham is here.
(02:07):
She Ay Wickham, John Singleton is here. Oh boy, East
Preddies shredded his hamstring rounding first base. Boy, they didn't
waste any time he pulled it or whatever he did.
I mean it looked like a pull to me. Yeah,
and they flew his ass. I don't think he flew
the right eye back or six the six am play,
But He's like, oh, yeah, we're selling to Houston. He
went straight to the plane from the field. Now does
(02:29):
Jim Crane use miles on that or do you just
pay the air fair?
Speaker 3 (02:32):
Now?
Speaker 1 (02:32):
Can you get on the plane with those cleats?
Speaker 3 (02:34):
No?
Speaker 1 (02:34):
He probably you probably shout, I don't think he went
in uniform. I've told you the story. Really QUI really
quickly when we when I was doing Rice baseball in
the nineteen nineties late nineties, as soon as the game
was over, you would think the boys would go take
a shower, get dressed, and then we'd go, you know,
get in the car, van, truck, whatever, the bus. Nope,
(02:54):
the guys in cleats, in full uniform. We would go
eat right after the game. So it was Wayne Graham,
some of his players, some of his coaches were all
to Denny's just knocking it back, like exactly a little
go to the pizza Inft. You gotta do what you
gotta do. The goat the mold of morale, big, big
fan of minor league and college teams. So uh yeah.
So he got on the plane and said, I'm out
(03:15):
of here and they haven't said anything about it. I'm
assuming they'll they'll give us an update on him later today,
but they did. I l him immediately, which is never
a good sign. A good sign, and it's a reinjury,
not a good sign. Different, different, Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah,
that actually makes me feel a lot better. First one
was three days. This one's going to be probably m
which can happen when one is hurt and you compensate
(03:37):
and then you hurt the other one that our track
athlete probably has heard of. That. Yes, yes, yes, we're
gonna play some Dana Brown audio. And as I told
you before and I told you for the last month,
when we play the Dana Brown audio, I will not
give you any sort of commentary on set audio because
he's only he's only being he's only answering the question
it was asked to him. Okay, doesn't mean that it's
(03:58):
the truth, doesn't mean it's a light of I mean
he's trying to hide something he doesn't know. And as
I said before, and I maintain my consistency on this,
when they arrive and they play, I'll be happy. I'm
not gonna hear getting close sooner rather than later on
the cusp of man looking good, none of that. You
(04:19):
know what I've been saying that too, but I'm backing
off on it. At least when I get how about this,
I'll do one rider to that. When I hear rehab assignment,
I'll start to get a little. Now if you want
to believe that Javier rehab exactly? Are Getty really good rehab?
Garcia rehab? Yeah? So I was trying to take my
stance that I didn't care, but then I heard, oh
(04:40):
good rehab started. All right, I'm gett excited, so I
know I'm trying, not just sucking. I No. It's where
we're fighting, the rational versus the emotional. Now, the rational says,
don't worry about it, don't think about it. The emotional
is like, oh, Eric Getty's looking good. I'm doing it. Okay, Fine,
you choose your own path, Houston, Texas. This man's path
(05:01):
is when they put the word Astros in their jersey
and they're in the lineup and Bob Ford screams her name.
I'm all good, okay, Matt, And when you're on, Alvarez
gets to see you later for Robert, then we're gonna
do it, okay. But until then audio is played, were
providing information. I will not react to this audio at all.
(05:21):
Is that gonna be you? It'll be like a I
am Matt. We can record a response for you. Hi,
I'm Matt. And now, while this news sounds encouraging, because
of the past mistransgressions of the astros, I will not
be getting here. Can we record it right now? We
need some Let me get some like some reading music
or something like that. Here, hold on, okay, oh good,
(05:45):
jam okay.
Speaker 3 (05:48):
My.
Speaker 1 (05:48):
It's Matt Thomas, co host of The Matt Thomas Show
with Ross weekdays ten to two on Sports Talk seven ninety.
Here's the latest on Jordon Alvarez. Here's the latest on
Jeremy Pino. Here's the latest on Eastsik Peretes. Here's the
latest on Spencer Arragetty. Here's the latest on Luis Garcia.
(06:08):
Here's the latest on uh I sound out various astros,
not Ronald Blanco. He's done for these. Here's the latest
on the latest astro injury. All right, Part two. And
that was Dana telling us that things are getting better.
(06:29):
And that was Danna telling us that things are encouraging.
And that was Dana telling us that it looks like
it could be a few more weeks. And that's Dana,
sounding bullish on the return of Okay, we're done, we
got it, turning music off. I'm taking it with a
grain of salt. You didn't get turning music back up?
(06:50):
Let me start? Did he say sooner rather than later?
I take everything with a grain of salt. When he returns,
he returns. I look forward to his return, man, I
miss him. Imagine with this lineup will be like when
returns can't wait for to hit the take them out?
(07:13):
Which try they can take? Two? Three? Two to one?
Can't take take three? Can't wait for to return to
the astrois pitching rotation? Is that the real we're seeing
out there? Man? The reports at Corpus are good, man,
The reports at Sugarland are good. Oh dang, another Astra
(07:34):
injury too. Put in bubble rap. Oh, I'll give you one.
Put jose L two ba and bubble rap. I think
I've just finished the show. For the last two months,
sixteen players are currently on the Astro's injury list. Oh
my god. Major League Baseball Network has a list of
(07:56):
all of them. My god, Oh I forgot Sean Dubin
and JP Franz and Zach descends, How could you forget
Luis Giormey and Brendan Rodgers, who probably got collide with
a player over the weekend in sugar Land. God, he's
really he's on a sixty day. I l now he's
doing a good job of dling A's DFA, Jacon Myers,
Jacob Melt. I don't count pay to or leone. He's
a Sugarland space cabin goat. He's in the Space Cowboy
(08:17):
mount rushing. Its technically fifty players. I mean, I know
it's literally sixteen, but Similton's working his way into Space
Cowboy Hall of Fame if he's not already there. Now.
I did see a tweet this morning. Do you know
hit number he's wearing for the Astros? Uh? Somebody took
his number right? Yeah, so he's got a new number.
What is it? Thirty five? Oh? Justin Verlander, past tense Verland.
(08:41):
Verlander's not winning any games with the Giants. He's long gone.
I've got something to say. Oh say, if roy O's
Wat's number eight retired, Justin Verlander's number should not be retired. Sorry,
we appreciate the two World Series, but he didn't put
in the time. It wouldn't be it wouldn't be tantamount
to the Clyddrex one because that was worse because Clydejrector
(09:02):
was only what like three four seasons, but it would
be in that ballpark. I feel like Mount Rushmore after
pitchers quickly, roy Oswalt yep y Ryan, do you put
Larry Derker in that group? Don Wilson stop? What could you?
(09:22):
Jane Reynolds, could you? Here's Joe Nicro Joeyko's the all
time winner and right, yeah, but I mean, how does
it feel?
Speaker 3 (09:31):
Is it?
Speaker 1 (09:31):
Phil? Phil never played for the ask? Okay, there there
you go. Answers my question. It's your Negroes, right boom uh.
Joe nicro is the all time leading winner? Was his record?
I don't remember. It's like he's got Okay, I'm pulling
(09:53):
it up. One hundred and forty four wins are the Astros.
Joe nkro Is never starting a game seven for me
in a the Astros. Okay, but yeah, well I'm putting
Randy Johnson start in a game seven, but he didn't. Right,
we'll discuss this week. When is when is the after?
When's the All Star break?
Speaker 3 (10:11):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (10:11):
Last week? Oh dang, we can't do it? Then we
can think about it all right, ten thirteen on Sports Talk.
Seven out of It is the Matt Thomas olid also,
hope you guys are in a good mood today. We
certainly are. Your stros did win a game and convincing
fashion with a bunch of people. Taylor Trammell is he
the goat he used to go to playing at uh
T Mobile Park going against his old teammates. I like
(10:34):
Taylor Tremill make make it play. He's throwing people out. Yeah.
Bryce Matthews got his first hit as a major leaguer
over the weekend, as you predicted. Yeah, got a feeling win.
May had done much since then, but it's neither here
nor there, right, he's working on and then Lance mccullors
much to discuss dominant performance at the Open Championship over
(10:56):
the weekend. I actually watched some of that you did. Longhorn, Legends,
Scottie Scheffler. Yeah, people don't like him. Yeah he's but
I'll explain they tried to show a softer side to
him after he pulled away and started the competition. H
Ross has been spending a lot of time discussing the
w NBA labor strife. I can't sleep man, Wait, those
(11:20):
T shirts for saying or something else. Yeah, well we
can discuss that too. Mats actually said we weren't going to
bring up the w NBA. You lie. I know, but
it's not as it's not as cut and dry as
it should be. I mean, I'll just say it this way.
It's not cut and dry. I would agree, but I'm
not going to say that it's they did the right thing.
I'm just going to say that there are just better
(11:41):
avenues than putting up shirts like that. All you did
was spark social media outrages on Kay Robinson thinks it's
a great idea. He does, Yeah, I did. And you know,
the Texans don't have one of their second round draft
picks signed. Yes, which one? Uh hold on, it's not
the receiver, it's yours. It's gonna be your one of
(12:04):
your starting amazing offensive linemen in two thousands. Yes, so
the second rounders, a lot of them haven't signed, though
they're starting to come in a little by little because
of the fully guaranteed deal that the Texans gave out.
So really, Nick Cassaro is hated by thirty one other
general managers. That's fine, all right? Seven one three two
I'm not the off front office. I don't care. Yeah,
(12:27):
I just will he's gonna play. Will there be ursery
angst if he doesn't show up for the first day? Wow,
you just came up with the headline for Houston Texans. No,
they wouldn't do that, no anything, They would say nothing.
I'm sorry for them, Uh for the battle red Times,
deep steel, low down. Yes, I'm sure they get credit
(12:49):
for everything. Liberty white dealer. Actually that's something else that
isn't that any play like a green sheet rip off?
Seven one? People even know what the greensheet is? Let's
ask See, this is why we love having Jonathan Jonathan,
do you know what the green sheet is?
Speaker 4 (13:02):
I don't.
Speaker 1 (13:03):
Okay, don't worry about it. See we could when we
say do the kids know what this is? We can
go directly you are a kid. I kind of like
it tho because I really don't know. We love having
you on the show. Do you want Are we gonna
tell them? Uh? When we come back? Seven one three
two one two five seven ninety seven one three two
one two five seven nine zero. You're on Twitter? Want
to follow us there? It's at sports empty and at
(13:24):
sports Servy. Are you hungry, you're thinking about lunch coming
up in forty five minutes, aren't you all right? The rise? Uh,
let's just say the green sheet for those that I
would say that ninety percent audience means what the green
sheet is? We need to get that number lower. Yeah,
we want to get it. We want hopefully not that
(13:45):
we don't appreciate those of you that know what a
green sheet is, but we would find not mind getting
a few more that don't know what it means. It's
a week? Was it a weekly? Magazon Magan? I believe
it was a weekly?
Speaker 2 (13:56):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (13:56):
I would just call it, uh yeah, like a not
a one answer. It was a place to put your
goods and services into like a magazine format. Yeah, community newspaper. Yeah,
they didn't have news in it, but it was like, hey,
we've got this set of stores on Harwin, has this
going on. If you need yard service done, go to this.
(14:19):
If you need if you're looking to have a sprinkler system, pudding.
I would look at buying cars. There would be classified ads. Yeah,
it's a huge class. I put this way. That's say
it's a huge classified section. I mean like thirty or
forty pages deep. I used to just pick up the
Green Sheet, just read it and see what people had
(14:40):
for said, well, odd things people had for sale. And
then I believe the first car I bought I might
have saw in the in the Green sheet. Really, I
don't know why I went like this when I said it,
what car was it? Nineteen ninety three Honda cord in
Emerald Green. And back in the day you could trust
them because people were spending money to put money ads
(15:02):
in the Green Sheets, so they were obviously they were
obviously legit. Yeah, and my dad tried to hardball the
guy and he only gave us fifty bucks off. Fifty
dollars off. You gotta deal well, Denni billar real. He's
a tough negotiator. That's funny. Yeah, I don't because it
was a great price. It was a great price. Print anymore,
I'm sure it's if it isn't online only, right, Uh,
(15:25):
it's it says on the Wikipedia it is a local community.
It's still around. I don't know if they're still printing
these bad boys and limited release, very limited limited editions. Yeah,
you could basically and they would give you the sections
of town northwest, Cyprus southwest. You know, if you were
in League City or in you know, Galveston or whatever.
Uh huh, that's fine. I mean it served a purpose.
(15:48):
On their website, the last post is from February five,
February twenty four. Well, yeah, they had jobs. You could
find jobs there. Did you have more fun looking at
at the green sheet? Or you have more fun going
at the back of Houston Press and looking at those
various nightclubs that would have adult entertainment? That would you?
(16:09):
I didn't do that. That was me at sixteen obviously,
one hundred admit that one hundred percent. Admit that you'd
call the escorts. No, I would just see what was
there and what kind of strange ads there would be.
There were some classified looking for this, looking for this.
Uh huh. They used to have what would you call
what were the dating ads? Called dating ads? I don't know.
(16:31):
Oh no, there was a word for it, not single,
but I mean you could find like one n six numbers, Jonathan.
This is before the Internet. You could go. People would
date off of there. They would put like age thirty five,
interested in I don't know, arts and crafts, looking for Yeah,
it was in the back of the Houston presses, some
serial killer stuff. Man you had to meet some people
(16:54):
somehow back in the nineteen days ninety Yeah, yeah, you
could definitely, Well, that could be serio killers on dating apps, correct.
I mean I would think it's more easily to find
them now than it would be back then. At leasha,
then you had to go spend money on the Houston
precticle get your date. But you did have to go blind.
No pictures, You're more of a picture man, all right.
(17:15):
People would describe their bodies. They would say like fit
or which could be completely end of the movie Friday,
or he said, exactly, Jackson look like Janet Jackson look
more like Freddy Jackson or Jermaine. No, that's from the movie, Matt. Oh,
I don't know. You haven't seen Friday ever. No, Matt Thomas,
it's a comedy, Okay, I forgive Good Fellas. I'm forgiving
(17:40):
all these other Oh you said you actually saw Casino, right,
I did. I'm forgiving that one's more violent. Nah, it's
pretty close. But I forgive these violent movie because you
don't like violence. But a comedy and an all time
classic like Friday, you have. No, You're not gonna believe
what I saw this weekend. And I'm glad you don't
look on your Facebook page very much. No, I don't.
I have no idea what you saw. I caught the
(18:01):
last the three last three quarters of Steel Magnolia's and
it still makes me cry every single time. Steal makes
you cry. Steal Steal makes me cry, first of all,
great cast. Second of all, I mean weeping for I
don't want to give away. I don't want to watch.
I don't like to watch movies like that, movies thirty
six years old, by the way, eighty nine, Well, it
(18:25):
can run for president. I was gonna say, hashtag Shelby.
That's all I want to say. Okay, okay, back to
the Astros. So, how many times have you seen Steel
Magnolia's ten, Steel Magnolia's ten Friday zero. Yeah, well I'm
gonna end that. I'll go watch Friday this weekend. Okay,
do it. Yeah, I'll report back to you Monday with
(18:46):
a Friday review. All right, Uh, well, we we're gonna
uh look at the roster coming back the Astros. No,
you're piss me off, or the Space Cowboys, whatever you
want to call it. It's kind of a hybrid. Now, Remember
I would not necessarily if you were worried about the Astros.
Yesterday's victory doesn't make you feel significantly better. Personal ads
(19:08):
that's they're called. Okay, sorry, go ahead, but but it
calms you down a little bit. Okay, not the personal
because again Taylor Tremmell did help the cause. Who else,
I mean, Zach Schortz helped a little bit. Cooper Humble's help,
hum a little bit, a little bit. The Astros used
(19:28):
Matt Dominga's and he helped a little bit. Mm hm.
You know what I'm saying, Carotene, he's swinging in a
big bat. He is. He's gonna have to keep doing that.
But I mean, you're you're just you're you know what
you're doing. You you're in the deep end of the
water of the pool, and you are just trying to
stay above water, right, I like that, Right, You're just
trying to stay afloat. Yeah, you're trying to breathe a
(19:51):
little bit. You're treading water until the lifeguard gets there, okay,
or the life preserver or something. Lifeguard's got a fractured hand,
all right. Some Dana Brown audio coming back on the
variety of injuries, and again I will not comment on anything.
He says, I will listen. I will accept what he
says as gospel, but I will provide no other analysis
(20:13):
besides that. Ten twenty nine on Sports Talk seven nine,
it is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross. We thank
you for a spending part of your day with us.
Hopefully you can hang with us all the way till
two o'clock today. Where you got Big three basketball tickets
you give away? By the way, our boss, our broadcasting programming boss,
Brian Erickson went to the eighty show on Friday night
(20:34):
and said that John Waite was the star of the show.
John wait the star of the show. Said everybody else
was kind of mid, but John Waite was really good. Okay,
he can still let it sang so Wayne Tun didn't
do his wing wang Chung. He did so he did
not wang Chung that night. I can't name a second
Wang Chung song. Everybody wang Chung tonight basically sing do
you sing wang Chung? And then covers of everybody else's songs?
Or what do you doing? I don't know. I'm go
(20:57):
look it up, man. I don't know how many hits
Wayang Chung had it got enough to tour. Imagine if
you went to a went to the restroom when you
missed wang chunk. Yeah, you could probably do that. I'll
go get some popcorn. Yeah, get one of those long
margaret as they sir, don't let go dance all days.
(21:18):
Oh that's a good song. Yeah yah, yeah you could. Yeah, yeah,
there's enough. Let's go number nine hit nineteen eighty seven.
Those songs don't familiar. Okay, dance all dance all days?
Is that you said? Everybody have fun tonight was a
number two hit. Oh yeah, that is an eighties banger.
All right, So to the astros. Now, Dana Brown visits
(21:39):
with Robert Ford on Sunday on the pregame show. If
you don't catch it, so we give you an opportunity
to catch some of the sound. And yes, honestly, Robert
had to do and it was the right thing to do.
Is him to spend eighty percent of his time talking
about the health of the team, Yes, and we need
some proper everybody on the team is injured. Music.
Speaker 2 (21:56):
Oh yeah, now, wait a minute.
Speaker 5 (22:08):
Let's get the latest UDI. Go ahead, All of a
sudden stopped working.
Speaker 1 (22:17):
Hold on, it was working literally last segment, good god, yeah.
Speaker 6 (22:22):
Absolutely, waiting for the MRI Uh, you know, hopefully it's
not as bad. You know, it's always tough when you
lose the guy that's been the most consistent for you
throughout the entire season, that's both defensively and offensively. He's
had a pretty good year for us. So, uh, you know,
we'll be paying close attention to this one. You know
(22:43):
it's going to be tough, you know, playing these next
stretching games without them continue.
Speaker 1 (22:51):
You add anything you want to add. I want to
add that Dana is always super optimistic, and so when
there's an absence of that, I'm concerned. That's what I
would like to add these untrained eyes. Looks like that
was a full pull like months. They're calling it a
(23:13):
strain on the website. Back ye, you you just continue
to drink the kolid over the front. You knock that
colid back is little, that's cold word. But I'm not commenting,
Remember I said that one comment. You're not commenting. I'm
gonna comment, and let's get a plan for your non Alvarez.
Speaker 6 (23:34):
Yeah, I mean the deal is we're gonna let him
swing the bat, get some swings in, you know, off
the tee. See how it feels that on this day off,
and then you know, bring them back the next time
and try to increase the intensity each time. And you know,
so we're gonna you know, gradually get them built back up.
But it's it's been really encouraging to know that he's
(23:57):
swinging the bat now with no pain. Of course, he's
not cutting it loose, but he's at least taking his
hacks and he doesn't fill anything.
Speaker 1 (24:05):
So that's great. That's a great sign. This music is
making me what's optimistic? Maybe this was a bad idea.
Try to add production value to the show and it's
just making tears stream down my face. Well, the problem
is I can't comment any of this. I would add
production value with my commentary that sounded a little bit
(24:26):
more optimistic. I would say, Okay, hold on, play that again.
I want you to listen very closely to what he said,
and I want you to give the real answer.
Speaker 6 (24:34):
Okay, yeah, I mean, the deal is we're gonna let
him swing the bat, get some swings in, you know,
off the tee, see how it feels that on this
day off, and then you know, bring him back the
next time and try to increase the intensity each time,
and you know, so we're gonna, you know, gradually get
them built back up.
Speaker 1 (24:54):
But it's it's.
Speaker 6 (24:55):
Been really encouraging to know that he's swinging the bat
now with no pain. Of course, he's not cutting it loose,
but he's at least taking attacks and he doesn't fill anything.
Speaker 1 (25:06):
So that's a great that's a great sign. It's just
like perfect timing with the swelling of this song. I
think it's fine, Matt. He's not cutting it loose, but
he's swinging, and then we're gonna get him back and
re evaluate. Everything's cool. Nothing to worry about. Your folks,
continue on. I have no comment. First of all, here's
(25:29):
my comment. I have been an Astro. I was an
Astro buddy in nineteen eighty. Okay. I love this Astros team.
I grew up with this team. It's my team in
the story. Okay, and I'm moving on. Okay. Dana Brown,
how's Jeremy Penia looking?
Speaker 3 (25:42):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (25:42):
I mean, look, there's a chance we could do it
without a rehab assignment, although we may need to let
him get some type of timing back. Hopefully he can
get that while in Florida, but look, we need him
back a sap. It seems like when you know, Jeremy
Pinia went down, That's when things started to really affect
the club, you know, as a whole, you know, because
(26:04):
he was leading off. He was really consistent with the
bat this year. He brings a lot of energy and leadership,
you know, so anytime you lose your shortstop that's you know,
at the top of the lineup, and he's right in
the middle of all the energy, it's gonna be a
difficult thing.
Speaker 1 (26:24):
I have multiple Astros jerseys. I've got a rainbow one,
I've got a nineties one, and I'm thinking about going
to get these new space the new Monday ones, Space City,
the Space City ones, whatever. Like I didn't like Lashers.
I like this year's Monday uniform. That's all I have
to say.
Speaker 6 (26:42):
First of all, sounds like a buffet pitching, which I
really like. You know, those guys, at some point we're
gonna be able to use all three of those, you know.
I think Arraghetti, you know, could be the first guy back,
you know, because it wasn't an arm related it was
more of the thumb, and so he may be a
guy that you know, you could you know, sort of
expedite a little bit. It looks like he had, you know,
(27:05):
three really good innings, and you know, once the velos
start to come back, and if he can hold it
and maintain it, you know, we could see him, you know,
being built up partially back here when he arrives, you know,
but we got to get him built up somewhat to
at least be a starter. So he's going through his
early stages of spring training right now, or I was
(27:27):
just say a little bit into spring training mode, you know,
right now, and hopefully, you know, after a couple more starts,
we could really start to think about, hey, is this
the guy that we can go ahead and turn the
corner on and bring him back sooner?
Speaker 1 (27:41):
He would be huge.
Speaker 6 (27:42):
Javier seems like he's throwing the ball well, ninety four
ninety five. You know, he could certainly, you know, get
back here, probably be after every Arrogetti. But I could
see him getting back here too as well. And then
I think Garcigia is probably behind.
Speaker 1 (27:57):
Both of those guys.
Speaker 6 (27:59):
The fact that he's you know, touching ninety three with ease,
and you know that those are all good signs, and
so you know, we'll we'll see the as we continue
to procrastinate and continue to get built up but certainly
we could use those three right now.
Speaker 1 (28:20):
I was there when Mike Scott through the no hitter
in nineteen eighty six. I was in eighth grade and
I skipped school that day. I went for a half day,
and I got caught on the vice principally got mad
at me. Okay, there are four games up, and first
it's all good. That's exactly right. Up and up four games.
A certain member of the seven ninety staff, I won't
(28:41):
mention his name, Dan Matthews, said that the Astros would
have swept, that the Askers would have lost the division.
We're feeling all right, Oh we're playing more Joe Cocker, Yeah,
and maybe less of this. It's bringing me down, all right,
is it? We're gonna That's what you put on when
you're break it up with your lady. Okay, divorce cam.
(29:02):
You think that that song was played by the CEO
of that of the astronomer too, is from his wife
to the husband. I don't know what are they gonna do?
You might as well stay together, No, no chance. They
seemed like they were having it. He resigned. He resigned. Yeah,
and that video is that over over one hundred million views?
You know, what I want to actually talk about that
when we come back. Okay, I have a question that
(29:26):
maybe I'm not trying to get. I don't think it's
gonna be canceled, but you can get you canceled. No,
you canceled hopefully. No Why am I?
Speaker 4 (29:33):
Why?
Speaker 1 (29:33):
Why are you trying to cancel me? I'm just students
playing sound bites a Dani Brown. I just have a
dumb question. Oh I know, I'm I'm here for it.
Then seven one three two five seven seven one three
Needles wants to talk about. Oh, he's gonna apologize to me. Oh,
we gotta get that. Can we get that before your comment? No,
all right, Negel Hanktack, We're gonna get to your phone call.
(29:53):
Trust me on this. So we asked Gordy what he
wanted to talk about when he came into this morning
for his drive by w NBA labor situation. Right, what
do you? What are your thoughts on that? Gordon pay them? Yes,
I don't know. Oh wait, what happened about that? I
was supposed to have a dumb question real quick? Oh yeah,
what's your dumb question about the CEO? Why does he
(30:15):
have to get fired and lose his job le Okay, Okay,
you know he got chorus into resigning. I mean absolutely
so ethics related ethics, he's their publicity. If I if
I got a hundred CEOs, how many of them are
only sleeping with their wives? Okay, I'm a generalization wondering, Oh,
(30:37):
it's just done. I mean if he does a good job,
what if what if what if the chairman of the
board of iHeart, Bob Pittman with his HR right, was
he doing a good job? Is he making the shareholders money?
I think there's an there's ethical to a publicly held
company that you have to kind of watch. It's for
pr you're held to a higher standard. I guess it's
only down are Okay? I like I said, it was
(30:58):
a stupid question. Like if the president of the United
States had an intern in the you know, yeah, and
he didn't get he kept his job. He wasn't peace. Yeah,
there's another president was in peace like three times. He
kept his job.
Speaker 4 (31:11):
Yeah, So maybe the standard is lower run, maybe you
should go not much of a standing for president, So
let's move on from that.
Speaker 1 (31:16):
I guess I thought this way, no crimes were committed.
What if they were both single, probably it's not the
best look, but they probably keep they're both single. There
there would be no issue. But you've got you've got
an HR boss and a CEO who are both It's optics,
as what I'm saying. Did you see the videos? Optics
are a huge part of employment. I've never heard of
(31:36):
astronomer there.
Speaker 4 (31:37):
All the videos they did at the minor league ballparks
over the weekend, all this, somebody tweet out they said, look,
there were two families here that suffered a lot of
emotional but that this thing has brought a lot of
joy to the rest of us.
Speaker 1 (31:49):
So it was hilarious. Like if you and I were
to caress like that, take a photo of what why
would you go in this direction? It would you just
swerved so far off the path. We'd get a lot
of hits on it would not be a good look
to work on the road. And you made a U turn. Yeah, yeah, nice,
that's funny. How's a dad joke right there?
Speaker 7 (32:07):
Right?
Speaker 1 (32:07):
Anyways, Gordy, what's going on? Gordy? What are you up to?
I don't even talk talk to you about Did you
see the University of Texas got their fifth five star
recruit this weekend? That's good. Good for them. Seriously, they
were Miami and Georgia.
Speaker 4 (32:20):
That means they didn't pay any It was a little
bit of a Friday news dump. But the SEC Media
Day's media poll was dropped. Yea and Texas overwhelmingly picked
to win the SEC, doubled the votes of Georgia. I look, somebody,
they played Georgia on the road. Somebody brought this up there. Look,
I'm all aboard the arch Manning vanwagon. I think Sarkus
(32:42):
done a great job, but they rarely won the Big
twelve the last decade. We think they're just gonna come
in the SEC and run rough shot every year.
Speaker 1 (32:49):
What is it? Nobody thinks they're going to run rough shot?
Speaker 4 (32:52):
Well, they were picked last year or get to the
SEC title game. They did, they did, and now they're
picked this year not just to get there to win
it all. Okay, so so far, that's two years in
two years to go play for the title.
Speaker 1 (33:03):
Okay, so one year and they've done it, and we'll
see what happens this year. I think a a little
bit of it here we go. Anybody, anybody but LSU
is getting love in the SEC. I beg Georgia to win.
It so not show Aggies are eight. George is a
fine pick and they played Georgia on the road eighth
against Georgie. Your beloved Aggies are eighth. Okay, that's not
(33:25):
my beloving.
Speaker 4 (33:25):
I felt very low for a team that started what
seven and one and five and zero in the SEC last.
Speaker 1 (33:30):
Year, and then what happened? They lost four or five? Mm?
All right? Big twelve decided not to because anyone because
the Cougars are no. You guys are the consensus number one.
So I have a quick question, how are you thirteenth
of the Big twelve? There are sixteen teams? Thanks for
paying attention to the latest strategy. I needed some clarification.
(33:50):
It seems like it's not good if you finish thirteenth twelve.
I think they're going to be better. Thank you to it.
I appreciate that very much. It's gonna start uh with
the complete dusting off of SFA Stephenville or Nakanocha's High School,
and then we'll go on.
Speaker 4 (34:06):
That's that's what Willie Fritz wants. He wants them to
be the underdog again because they will exceed expectations six.
Speaker 1 (34:14):
And that's true when you're picked first to win the SEC.
Anything less, I've.
Speaker 4 (34:17):
Got u of age six and six getting a bowl
game six and six.
Speaker 1 (34:21):
I haven't gone through the schedule yet, so say again,
let's see they should beat Rice. Go ahead, mean, yeah,
they'll beat Rice. They'll beat SFA Oregon State West Coast.
That's a long ass trip to play up there.
Speaker 4 (34:34):
Okay, so how about this upset alert Friday nights they
beat the down in Colorado here in Houston.
Speaker 1 (34:41):
Easy, Psy couldn't agree more. I'll be at that game.
I will be at that game. Let's all go. I
don't know where I'll betation my daughters, Like you're gonna
miss a volleyball game to watch Colra versus Houston.
Speaker 4 (34:54):
Yeah, Friday, September twelfth, oh six thirty, kick, I like
it be home in bed by ten on the ESPN
two or what ESPN.
Speaker 1 (35:03):
Y hontery ware will be there and everything. It's amazing,
thank you very much. That Oregon State game mame not
so much. It's okay ASFA. Why are they going to
rights in the Lifetime network. It's the last game of
the series. About the stadium stinks. I don't disagree what stadium?
No offense, Rice, No, there's plenty offense. When you say
no offense to the I means you're going to offense.
It's like an old wooden ship. No it's not. It's
(35:25):
a dump. I feel bad because there are some people
that do care about rice athletics, or just too few
of them. When Central Campus doesn't care about the athletics,
you're doomed. It wasn't a super Bowl played there nineteen
seventy four and JFK spoke there, Yes, and the Vikings
lost to somebody dolphins.
Speaker 4 (35:41):
We choose to go to the moon because it is hot.
Speaker 1 (35:46):
I'm that it is easy. Was that your Kennedy impersonation?
It wasn't bad, little mayor Quimby. Quimby was a Kennedy impersonations?
All right, very good anyways. And by the way, real quick,
I worked all seven days last week. Can I get
a cop day?
Speaker 4 (36:00):
Sure?
Speaker 1 (36:00):
All right, thank you. I do that routinely. You don't
ask for comp days. I'm going to ask for one.
I took calls to one third in the morning on
a Sunday morning. Okay, I took calls for an hour
and a half yesterday. Here you go, look at us
walk on the weekends. What I Clanton Walks are gonna
pull a weekend as I got drunk and eight barbecue.
Speaker 4 (36:16):
Oh can I say this? Look, I know the trade
deadline's coming up. You don't have a GD thing in
your tank, Astros fan, Oh you do that trade? You
actually have one picture? That uli Ola guy is pretty good.
Speaker 1 (36:27):
You're not trading him though you'd be nothing in tank.
They have something in their tank. What about how White?
Speaker 4 (36:33):
And here's why you don't trade him because fromber Walks
at the end of this year, you have to keep
as many good pictures in your farm system as possible.
Speaker 1 (36:40):
Yeah. I don't think there's gonna be a lot of
wheeling and dealing. I will be discussing that on to
tell the truth today at eleven times.
Speaker 4 (36:47):
And let me tell you, guys, when they get some
of these guys back that are hurt, it's almost like
you made.
Speaker 1 (36:52):
A mid season Dana. Oh my god, such GM speak.
Now it's nuts, all right.
Speaker 4 (37:00):
Sorry that a guy called yesterday. You think we get
Seth Lugo. Yeah, sure for cam Smith. Oh, by the way,
we make that trade.
Speaker 1 (37:06):
Stop talking about the UNI un whatever. Suarez Henny him
he's only got thirty five bombs or something like that.
Everybody in their mother is gonna want him. Yeah, roleplay.
Speaker 4 (37:17):
You'd be Dana and called me and asked me for
your Heneo Suarez.
Speaker 1 (37:20):
If I'm the Diamondbacks, I asked for twelve percent of
the organization, I.
Speaker 4 (37:23):
Would go, Yeah, let's make a trade. Okay, we're gonna
start with like cam Smith. We'd like Colton Gordon, you know.
Speaker 1 (37:33):
With no, not Cam Smith.
Speaker 4 (37:36):
One guy trade mccollors, like there is zero value on
mccollors right now, Another guyade trade McCormick.
Speaker 1 (37:44):
Chas McCormick has zero value. I can see Chas McCormick
being traded. That would be for nothing. It would be
very very consideration. You're gonna stack up one hundred pennies
to make a dollars what you're trying to do. Would
you trade Chas McCormick for a col beer? No, I'd
rather keep it an ice cold beer. Are you sure, Gordy? Yeah?
(38:04):
All right, he's trying to segue you. This is the
second straight week he sat bought the Segway. I mean,
if I was grabbing the colder, it would horrific. It
would probably be a Crawford box. Horrific from our friends
at Carbock Brewing.
Speaker 4 (38:19):
If you missed it, Ross and I dropped a fresh
Crawford box cast on Friday.
Speaker 3 (38:23):
I heard it.
Speaker 4 (38:23):
It was basically showed off post All Star Break and
if you guys need a refreshing beverage, we'll be back
to the ballpark in a couple of days. You grab
yourself a Crawford box from our friends over there, Carbock Brewing.
And again they've been doing some great efforts over there.
If you go to their website just just google car
Bock Burning. You can go find all the great stuff
they got going on there right now, including continue to
raise funds for flood relief over the Hill Country. And
(38:46):
they got some t shirts that they're giving away as
well raising money. And again great cause it's carbon brewing.
But right here in Houston, Texas, grab yourself at Crawford
Bock pairs perfectly with Astros Baseball.
Speaker 1 (38:56):
We'll see you guys at the ballpark later this week.
That's Gorny Nigel now hung up. He can't he is
once apologized. I mean then he couldn't even hang on
a couple of minutes. Apologize to me. Yeah, I hung
up on him? You did? You didn't want to hear
it terrible seven one three two one two five seven
ninety seven one three two one two five seven ninety
(39:16):
ten fifty eight. We start the second hour of the
Matt Thomas Show with Ross to tell the truth in
a little over thirty minutes here on seven ninety eleven
O two Sports Talk seven ninety and is Met and
Ross with you on this Monday? If you need to
call and apologize to me for whatever horrible things you
said about me, either on the phones or on text
or on Twitter or to your friends Friday. Yeah, but
(39:39):
I'll take it right now. Yeah, no way, save Friday.
That's fine. Seven one three two one two five seven
ninety seven one three two one two five seven ninety
The Astros with a win yesterday, come from behind? Fashion
were you we could? How nervous were you when they
were down very early in the contest? A little bit worried?
Hunter Brown. That's now three straight mid starts, actually mid
(40:02):
to below average starts. M Yeah, what standard? Oh my god.
He deserves more grace than Ryan Gusto. Please didn't start
the ride Gusto fan club. This is hilarious. I've never
even hated on him once. I literally read it if
(40:24):
I read your e R and that's hating on you.
That's not on me. You the people have heard the show.
Oh my god, you guys are ridiculous. This is my
favorite bit of you guys. It's a tag team. But anyways,
ye had three bad starts. Mat it's getting progressively worre
six innings, four innings. Yeah, he had a thirty pitch
(40:46):
third inning. I think, really, I mean, that's that's gonna
be one of the loneliest feelings is that you're a
starting pitcher, your bullpen's been used quite a bit, and
you can bring a pitching coach out there to calm
me down. If you can't throw strikes, you can't throw
for And it wasn't like he was being I mean
it was they were just kind of nickel and Diamondum.
It wasn't like he was balls were leaving the yard.
(41:06):
He wasn't like he was throwing balls at the backstop.
He was just missing a little bit here and there.
And those are still going to recount his balls, and
that's why the pitch count got as high as it did. Yeah,
he's just he's gonna have to battle through this and
hopefully come out on the other side, and he had
a great start to the season. But I would say, yeah,
one of the questions in the back of your mind is, Okay,
how long can this keep up? Because he just doesn't
(41:28):
have the same track record of some of the other
guys like Terrek Skuble and Jake mcgram and all the
other guys who were at the top of the American League. Yeah,
uh so we can stop talking. But I think unfortunately,
this is probably going to cost him sion, not that
he was a favorite, but he probably will cost him
a little bit of a stretch. But who I don't
even care. If he finishes top three, the Astros get
(41:50):
a one compensatory pick, he still got a chance to
do that. We're just finished top three. That's probably all
you need him to do. Yeah, uh so the Astros
are gonna have to go with a six man here.
They got thirteen straight games and they're in game four
of that tonight. The problem is when you go to
a six man. We've talked about this before, you rely
(42:12):
on your bullpen a lot. Well, if you're starting rotation
isn't going deep in games. Hunter Brown didn't help the cause. Yesterday,
Astro's offense was able to overcome that Lance mccullors doesn't
go deep in games. If Colton Gordon goes longer in games,
Brandon Walter goes longer in games. That's why. And I
(42:33):
listened to Steve Sparks this morning with Sean Sean pose
a question to him, if you had to choose one,
do you go get a bat or do you go
get an arm? And I know that we just played
the soundbites from Aragatty or from Dana about Arraghatty and
about Christian Javier and Luis Garcia. Not the cynic in me,
(42:55):
but the absolute realist says to me, ross of those three,
only one can make an impact. That I mean, you
can say that, but we don't know that. I think
I have a I think I can go off of
history that says that you really don't recover from a
serious injury, no matter what it is, until you have
(43:18):
had a half season, quarter season, two months of a
season where you are just getting back into form. I think,
you know, we were talking about this that always takes
guys that have Achilles tears or acl polls or whatever
the case, it takes them a full season to get
reved up. I would rerealistically expect those three guys I
just mentioned to hopefully be a force of this Astros
(43:39):
team in twenty twenty six. If they give me anything
at this point, it's first of all, they're not going
to go deep into games. I mean Erraic Getty's pitched
this year, He's missed a couple of months. I don't
see any reason why he can't be good well because
the reason I would say it is because he's fighting
the clock here. He's just ramping up spring training. How
long does an average pitcher take to get ready for
spring training? About six weeks. Okay, you can't fast track it.
(44:03):
Either you are throwing or you're not throwing. When you don't,
when you put your arm down and you don't throw,
that means you got to start up right where you begin. Well,
as Dana said, they're gonna try to do a little
bit of his building up at the major league level. Yeah.
So back to my point, So Steve said he'd rather
go see a left handed bat. Now, of course you
need both, you absolutely need both. But I would I
(44:26):
am under the impression that the three guys are just mentioned,
only one of them shows up. Now, hopefully I'm wrong,
but I'm going off an educated past performance history kind
of tests only because one of them has been gone
two years that mccullors is who mccolors is, and at
some point Colton Gordon and Brandon Walter are gonna be
(44:51):
what they were when they originally were signed at and
or brought up here. I'm gonna make an analogy. Ooh,
I love it when I'm not doing it. Have you
ever done a fantasy auction draft? Man? I have? Okay,
the Astros, you get one hundred dollars budget, they're down
tot like forty bucks. They need a big arm, they
need a big left handed bat, they need maybe even
(45:11):
a leverage reliever. But they don't have They don't have
enough money to get into those types of bids, so
they are going to have to make some difficult choices.
They can't get everything they need, No, not anywhere close.
I'd be stunned that they made two trades. So orways,
what you would have to do is kind of bank
(45:34):
on what you have coming through, and that being I
think the pitching. I would love for them to make
a big move for a pitcher Seth Lugo as we
have mentioned, but I think the more pressing need with
the having of the the other players in their back pocket,
it's they're gonna have to go position player, I think.
(45:58):
And we'll see. Now are you saying that, because even
when the guys get back, you need additional help talking
about if and when Jordan comes back, when Painia comes back,
if and when Paritis comes back, and if and when
I'm putting if on Paratis. I mean, I mean, let's
just be honest. He's not the most hasn't looked like
(46:23):
the most in shape athlete. You know what, I don't.
I don't mind that. I don't mind him carrying a
little flab. No, I don't care about it either. But
when he when he hurts his hamstring, I do. When
it's like Jeremy Penia hurts his hamstring and east Partis
hurts his hamstring mentally, and maybe I'm wrong, you know,
I'm not a an orthopedist or whatever. Okay, good, It's
definitely going to be a more difficult recovery. Being is
(46:45):
more way and more you know, now muscles in the
back end. That's why he's trained in the first place.
Track athletes backing me up. So that's what I'm saying.
I just it makes me worried a little bit more,
especially now this is his second leg injury, and the
fact that we talked about immediately to the I l
that sounds like it's bad, and if it's a bad hamstring,
that could be months. We are into is July twenty
(47:05):
first today, So you're saying, go get a third basement tomorrow.
You can't get everything. You only got so much money
left in your auction tank, your pool, your resources are
so limited. Okay, Then do you pivot if it is paraded?
If let's say, let's say we're Dana Brown, We're in
(47:26):
the back room and we know we know Easaid Pratis
is out for the year. Didn't you kind of pivot
and go all in on pitching and say we're gonna
go try to do this twenty twenty two style. I
got one for you too. This is hard. What if
you go the opposite way and you never can say
(47:47):
this publicly? Mm hmm? Could you get crushed for it?
But when I mentioned this on the on the when
I was in the tenth Thing the other night, what
if Crane and Dana are the only two people in
the room, door shut locked, do not disturb? Okay? They said, Hey,
we had a nice baseball team here. We've got some
(48:08):
core players. We love painting, we love Brown cam Smith
looks like it's gonna be a star. Altobe still got
a lot of bang for his buck still, but the
stars aren't aligning this year. Too many injuries. We can't
fix it all with the trade deadline. What players we
have in the system that other teams want, we aren't
(48:29):
ready to give up. Why don't we just punt ongoing
after anybody at all? I think, and you know what
you could do if you did that. I'm not saying
they would do that, but you could say this, We're
not gonna go get somebody because they're asking for too much.
(48:52):
And we believe that when our healthy players come back,
we're gonna be close to full strength they come, whether
all of them come back, some of them come back,
or none of them come back. You can use the
injury list as kind of a not like a adding
players to facto, but kind of a excuse to say,
(49:13):
why would we go get all these players when a
bunch of our players are about to come back. What
you're saying makes a lot of sense and would be
kind of in line of what they did this offseason
where Jim Crane says we're always going all in on Well,
you don't trade Kyle Tucker away if you're always going
all in. And then yeah, so they could say they
could pull the reins back and say we're not going
all in all this year, which would make a lot
(49:35):
of sense with all these injuries that are piling up.
But two things. One, it helps to show the fan
base that you are chasing championships even if you're not
doing it full bore. And two, the American League is
winnable this year. It let's just say, like the game
if it were like, you know, even a year or
(49:55):
two when the Orioles had one hundred games and they
were like they were just kind of limping, even last
year when it felt like they were limping into the playoffs,
it feels more easier pill to swallow. But I feel
like if the Astros can, if you can get a
little luck and a couple guys back playing well, they
can win the American League. When I was going to
say this, if the Astros do not make a significant
(50:18):
move at the deadline, I wouldn't be shocked. I can't
crush them. I wouldn't crush them and I can't be shocked.
I know what you're saying, ladies and gentlemen. The stars
aren't aligning, and for this team to be four games
up in the American League West is truly astonishing. It
really is. Because we've said thirty five. Now with you
(50:41):
add Singleton and you add Shaewick come to the list,
you're talking about forty percent of your major league roster
is triple A quality. Yes, that's just the reality of it. Well,
and they've been feeling the effects of that recently as
they've lost what seven of the last night. You don't
(51:02):
even know what's going with Zach Short. He got pulled
for with ribsreness yesterday. I mean, what more can you
The Paridis situation was just the worst because it was
it didn't look like a cramp to me, and they
I held him immediately. Yeah, And as we played the
Dana Brown audio earlier, normally he sounds pretty flowery and optimistic,
(51:25):
and there was none of that in the prespit. There
just wasn't. Seven one three two one two five seven ninety.
If you'd like to join us here today seven one
three two one two five seven ninety. If you want
to visit with us through Twitter. You may do that
as well at Sports MT at sports r V seven
one three two one two five seven ninety to tell
the Truth is coming up at the bottom of the hour.
(51:47):
I want to tell you about what I watched yesterday
and how somebody was trying to change his image by
winning a big championship. We'll tay more about that in
a minute. Eleven fourteen on seven ninety, Hi, a couple
of things I want to get you real quick. Chris
Paul has one year left in his NBA career, says he,
and he will do it as a member of the
Los Angeles Clippers, going back to a place that he
(52:10):
had much of his NBA success except for the series
against the Rockets and and playing with someone he hates. Yeah,
remember about a ten years Well, how long was it?
Seven or eight years ago? I told everybody that all
the stories about Chris Paul and James Hardener hated each
other were overblown. Yeah, that's when you became an insider.
(52:31):
MT slash Peach Bess. I said, all of you that
go to YouTube and Twitter to get your inside sources
don't know crap. I'm on the inside. I don't say everything.
I don't say much. But when I saw all that
out there about their relationship was so terrible that they
couldn't work with each other? Was I said, you're you're
getting bad information, right information? Guy came into play. That's
(52:53):
me sports. Tim t great jobs, Matt. They're going to
be reunited for one more year. So put it this way.
If he hated James Harden so bad his last year
as an NBA player, do you even want to spend it
with James Harden? No? Of course not. They are they
best friends? No? Do they play cards? Yes? Is there
(53:14):
some level of respect between the two?
Speaker 3 (53:15):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (53:15):
Huh absolutely? Are you priced out of that game? We
all are. Oh I've always been priced out of bou
rat That's easy. I don't even know how to play it.
You just give him your money? Is that how it works?
What's the background with peach basket? I've been I've been
trying so hard. Okay, have you heard of James Naysmith? No,
(53:36):
James Nate Smith invented the sport of basketball in Kansas
and the first baskets they made were out of peach baskets.
Speaker 4 (53:44):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (53:45):
Why does that think they met? So? Since Matt is
such a font of basketball knowledge and insider information. Therefore
he is Peach baskets cool. Yeah, yeah, you like it, right.
That's tough. That's a good nickname. Yeah, it is tough.
Pete's basket empty. Just remember when I tell you stuff.
Trust me on this. Yes, don't listen to people that
(54:07):
have YouTube pages that have like nineteen views. I don't
want to say the name of the reporter that put
that out because I want to confirm it. Don't do it, Yeah, don't. Yeah,
I'll confirm with you during the break all right. So
that's number one. Does it start with one of these? Yes?
Number two. Congratulations to Scotti Scheffler University of Texas proud. Yes,
(54:31):
winning his second major of the year. He was happy
for I believe ninety three seconds. So my sons and
I went to breakfast yesterday and we were watching it
at the restaurant we were at, and I said, this
is pretty incredible. Guys. You know, he had a six
stroke lead at one point, maybe at his highest seven,
got down to four and he just cruise control of
the back nine cam. My oldest is not a fan
(54:53):
of Scotty Cheffeer. I said, well, why he goes because
he just looks so miserable all the time when he plays,
so he didn't smile. I texted our boss Brian and
I after a cheffer made a big putt to get
from four hundred to five hundred, and I'm like, well
that was a huge Putty goes not a fan. Wow.
So again, that's just two people that I deal with.
(55:14):
Doesn't mean that's a large audience. But I did do
a Google search and Scotti Shuffer would be not by
no means anything closer to being popular as a PGA golfer.
And the number one reason why is he just comes
across as really not a overly personable guy. M The
New York Times says he's a venomous trash talker. Yes,
(55:37):
so my guess is you have guys that are more
friendlier to the media will go whisper things about what
a a hole Scotty Scheffler is. Oh, Scotty Shuffer's twenty
nine years old. He has a dad bought at twenty nine.
I think he's doing okay with it, doing just fine.
But yesterday on the NBC broadcast, if you happen to
(55:58):
watch it now rosh, you were asleep as it was
on a thirty or twelve o'clock. Uh yeah, I actually
was sleeping right then that Dan Hicks, who was doing
the play by player work in the Eighteenth Tower, was saying,
you know, Scotty understands this reputation he's building up, and
he's trying to make him more not necessarily approachable, but
(56:18):
more of a not a common man, but just be
more personable in general. Okay, And yesterday it absolutely worked.
It did. He brought his baby out there, ah smart,
and he brought the wife out there. Was this like
Nike getting the PR people out there. Oh I don't
know who was out there, who was represented, whoever he is,
but the baby got as much airtime than he did
(56:38):
as much. That's a go to right there. So this
improven to prove the point. So Cheffer wins the us
SO or the British Open or the Open Championship, and
that might get a passing note on The Today Show.
And The Today Show is a show that doesn't lean
to any audience except just general people wanted to wake
up in the morning. Probably maybe more female driven than male,
(56:59):
but people still watch. It's been around for seventy five
years and they did an entire segment about Scheffler's kid,
how adorable he was. Okay, So whatever whoever told Scottie
Scheffer to kind of loosen up, it worked because all
the pictures and all the videos of oh, how cute
this kid is and how cool his dad is winning
(57:20):
this championship were plus size because the fact that this
kid was so approachable and cute and lovable, and he
obviously loved being a father. So sometimes pr campaigns can
be fixed in a matter of one day. When your
when your dad wins the British Open Championship and you
get to use him, you can the sun is being
used as a opportunity to show a little bit of
(57:42):
a softer side. Good for him, his image, Damn good golfer. Yeah,
he's got how many majors, like five or six plays?
He needs one more. I think he's got to. He's
for the career Slam, the careers, for the career Grand Slam.
What hasn't he won? Oh? The US Open? Okay, the
toughest of the group, two Masters, a PGA and an
Open twenty nine years old. You know, I kept thinking
(58:06):
I was watching the kid because he was up, he
was on the stage, and obviously he was holding him
the whole time. He was like his son never has
to work a day in his life. He will, I mean,
he will do something, but it won't be probably, you know,
ain't digging bitches. He's no, probably not good friend, they said,
kind of jealous that one year old's life set me
(58:27):
and you are still grinding here every day. Ten n
I'm with you, but your your goal is to make
things better for the generations after you met, and I
think you've done that. Thank you. I appreciate that very much,
all right? Uh, seven one three two children. So I
keep my money, what little of it I have seven
one three two one two five seven dotty seven one
three two one two five seven nine zero. So there's
(58:49):
a couple of other headlines there anything else on this
weekend that I've we've missed out on. Uh the mann
in Pacio fight. He got robbed. People are saying he's
forty six. Why is Manny Pacquiao even in the ring? Uh? Yeah,
you didn't miss his about over the weekend with dementia?
Is that what it was? Yeah, he went a majority
decision over Alzheimer's. You and I when this show first
(59:12):
started fifteen years ago, we were like, man when Paci
on Mayweather. Mean, it's gonna be one for the ages.
It was. It came about eight years too late. Hey yeah,
but they still got a record by they made a
billion dollars or whatever it was. But anyways, yeah, I
think everybody said I didn't watch the fight. Everyone says
he won it, but he there was a majority decision.
Boxing controversy, boxing shooting itself in the foot, Matt, When
(59:32):
have you ever heard of that? It's funny I've been
for the forty years of me being a quasi boxing fan.
There's something that you'll never get rid of. Judges being
a you know, suppose horrible judge to take or just
being bad at eyes. Yeah, all right. To Tell the
Truth is up next eleven twenty seven on Sports Talk
seven ninety. If you want to join the conversation, we'd
love to have you at seven one three two one
(59:53):
two five seven ninety seven one three two one two
five seven ninety. To Tell the Truth is coming up
after I tell you about the Shell Federal Credit Union.
Speaker 8 (01:00:12):
I know, because the great thing about me Ross is
I can tell the truth.
Speaker 1 (01:00:27):
Can do it. I do it every Monday at eleven thirty,
at least for one segment. All right, the rest of
the time kind of a mixed bag of truth and
lies or fibbs, as the kids would say. Gentlemen, good
luck to you this week. I have four takes here, Okay,
I only believe one of them. So Jonathan, how many
(01:00:50):
lies are there? Three? Three lies in the truth? So Ross,
how many truths are there? One? There? We're getting this
knocked out beautifully, like there's only one truth. One is
a food take, and I'm gonna start putting food takes
in weekly. Oh my god. I now, if you really
want to scramble my brain, give me your ridiculous, nonsensical
(01:01:12):
food takes. Here we go. Number one this weekend, I
had the takeis Burger at Wendy's. Okay, surprisingly delicious. Okay.
Number two. If the WNBA goes on strike, it will
permanently ruin the league. Reason for that is the league
(01:01:33):
is already image wise sketchy at best, and if you
go on strike, you'll even get more people disinterested and
more people laughing at you. It will permanently ruin the league.
Doesn't mean it so will exists, but you will have
a difficult time with additional sponsorships. There will be a
tremendous backlash. The WNBA and the NBA have got to
do everything in their power not to go on strike.
(01:01:56):
It will permanently ruin the league if they go on strike.
That's number two, Okay, Number three. Once the Astros go
back to a five man rotation, which will begin another
week and a half or so, there's gotta be a
move that's gotta be made. Lance mcculors must go to
the bullpen. This thought of him starting anymore and getting
into a high pitch count, it's the thing in the past. Lance.
(01:02:19):
We appreciate your efforts in your heart, we're getting back,
but you're hurting your team pitching every fifth day as
a starter. You, my man, need to go to the bullpen.
Once the Astros go to a five man rotation, okay,
And number four the Longhorns must what win a national
(01:02:39):
championship in the next three years or this latest run
of Steve Steve Sarkisian as the head football coach will
be deemed not by just me, but by national repundits
and a lums as a major disappointment. Major does you have?
You have all these recruits you're coming in, You've had
these top flight recruiting classes. You have three years this
(01:03:03):
year in the next two to win a national championship,
or it will be considered a major bust of a
Texas football run as a program. Those are my four.
Three of them. I don't believe one I do. Time
for you to figure out which one I'm telling the truth?
You may discuss. Confused. I was thinking of three truths,
(01:03:26):
three lives. Let me let me we.
Speaker 7 (01:03:30):
Just went.
Speaker 1 (01:03:34):
I was like, what, I'm gonna be honest? All right,
I got it. I'll say him again. I'm lightheaded. Hold on,
all right here they are. One of these is the truth?
One Jonathan four one Takis Burger I had this weekend
quite delicious. W n b A goes on strike, it
(01:03:54):
will permanently run the league. Three Lance mcculors must go
in the bullpen once the Astros' a five man rotation,
and four the Longhorns must win a national championship in
three years or it will be considered a stain on
the football legacy of the program. Which one of the four?
Which one am I telling the truth? Okay, Well, I
(01:04:17):
hope he's going to be reasonable and know that I
mean the likes of Georgia A and m Miami, Alabama
are spending so much money Ohio State, Oregon on these
recruits that championship or bust is just such a difficult threshold.
But recruiting class and money spending ross, we gotta the bias,
(01:04:38):
that's true. We gotta think about it. That's true. Well,
Texas Tech is number two. If they don't want a
chance the national championship, is it a massive My take
is the University of Texas. I know, car, we have
all this. Okay, well that's nonsense. So I'm dismissing and
I'm gonna give mats of grace. I'm gonna give him
some credit for intelligence. Eating that Fuego Windy's he's not
eating That's that's a straight lie. There's no way. I
(01:05:01):
don't believe that. Now, did you eat a hole burger?
Or did you take a bite of somebody's? I split
one with him. Now he's staring at me though, like
when he's like a poker buff. No, we split for
all the time. Last he hasn't been on lance with
(01:05:22):
color Hill. That's you. So that's a I'm gonna go
number two. I'm going number two. Okay. See, he's been
talking about my Colors going to the bullpen. But I
think he's gonna be off the team. M hm, so
we'll go. I'll go number two. I'm going to go.
We don't have anybody for pitching, man, Okay, I'm going
(01:05:46):
on with Longhorns. Okay, I would never eat a talkie think.
I was like, that's spicy. He doesn't like it overly spicy. No,
I don't mind spice. My body doesn't like the spice.
Person like the spice. But you make decisions based on
your body. Don't like spice. Hockeys are disgusting. So no,
(01:06:06):
I'm going to pass on that. Okay, uh Lance, but
Color is just going to be a rotation by the
rest of the year. He just is or off the team.
I would say, yeah, I'd say one or the other.
I can't see him going to the bullpen. I don't
know what the value is the pulling up a guy,
because again, when you're looking for bullpen, you're looking for
a guy to get out there and throw strikes it
right away. The bigger problem has been is it's been
his pitch count has been so fat. Listening to me,
(01:06:28):
I appreciate you on that. Yeah, he's either rotation or DFA.
That's what I think. So I don't think a bullpen
is going to say I did earlier in the year,
but now that we have a good sample seze of
who he is, this is tough and ross. You're gonna
get mad at Oh yeah, but I think that when
you have the number one recruiting class, I don't I've
(01:06:50):
seen him best. Sid. You have all these number one,
these top five selections. Yeah, they weren't the number one clasent.
They aren't the number one class. I think when you
are spending ungodly amounts some money that the University Texas,
I think that's not any question of me. The alums
are gonna come after him hard if you do not
win a national That's not what you said. You didn't
say the alarms are coming after him, you said, I
(01:07:10):
said you're saying to me? Was me? The media, critics
and the alums, I said, all of them. Yeah, go
back and check the take massive disappointment. Yeah, Okay, I
think I I're wrong. It's not as I mean, I
understand your value point is. This is just my take
is that I think now the expectation levels because Arch
was so highly recruited coming I mean number one quarterback
(01:07:31):
coming out of high school. You have this, you are
the odds on favorite win the a SEC. I think,
I think the semifinals is cool and everything, but I
would think if I'm helping spend this crazy nil money
that the University Texas is getting, I'm not doing it
just to go ten and one and at ten and
two and lose in the semifinals. I think if you
don't win one in the next three years, it's a
massive disappointment. Absolutely, And as far as the w NBA concerned,
(01:07:54):
if they go on strike, it's going to be as
that if the tree falls into force, everybody there to
hear it fall. I mean, you can't ruin the image.
If you don't like, you're going to set the league back.
It's not gonna set the leak back. If you strike,
is not gonna set the WNBA back. No, because if
you don't want the WNBA, listen to me. If you
don't want the WNB, you don't care if they go
on striker they have labor harmony, Yeah, but that's gonna come.
(01:08:16):
They're trying to strike while the iron hot is hot
right now because of Caitlyn Clark, Angel recent others and
if they try to stunt that growth in the middle
of this big boom that they're having, that would absolutely
set you back. I think if you're a WNBA listen,
listen to me. If you're a w NBA fan, you
don't want to go on strike, obviously, but it's not
going to permanently ruin the league. It might be a setback.
(01:08:36):
But when I think, when I think permanently ruined the league,
I think of franchise is going on of business, nobody
going to games anymore. Kaitlyn Clark's if they go on
strike for for two hell, the Major League Baseball close
the season off and it didn't permanently ruin baseball, but
it was took a long, long, long time until Mart
McGuire Samy still starting hitting home runs. Yeah, KLN gets
some three point shots, fine, until Bud Selix started turning
(01:08:58):
his blind eye to two was yeah, and that's fine.
I mean, I can agree with that, but it is
a massive disappointment. I think, is it too high of
a standard. I mean, Michigan won the national championship recently,
they had one since nineteen ninety seven, or the Oregon
has never won a national not never, but they haven't
won a national championship in any of this time that
(01:09:19):
that they've been spending all this money. Ohio State Ryan
Day was literally about to be fired in his sixth
season at Ohio State until they got in and and so,
I mean then they had won since what I don't know,
two thousand and two or whatever it was before. No,
I guess they won one in like two thy twelve
or something like that. The coach said, yeah, but that's
also since Steve Sarkisian had gotten there. Oklahoma has it
(01:09:44):
won one since two thousand? Who else is up there
that hasn't won one in a along time? That's hard everybody,
all these these programs are saying the same thing. We
have to win. We have to win, we have to win.
And they are not the number one recruiting class right
now there the number one in NL spending. USC uh, well,
I don't know where they are as far as and
(01:10:06):
that's also those are estimates, don't even know. But anyways,
let's put the number one in an ioun spend and
that's fine. They're behind USC, Georgia A and M and
Notre Dame in Texas. Notre Dame hasn't won a national
championship since when the nineteen nineties? Now, when's the last
note Notre Dame national championship? In two national championship games
in lost, came in. Texas has been in the playoffs
in the semifinals two times and lost. So Notre Dame
(01:10:29):
hasn't won one since what ninety three? Ish? All right,
I'm telling you when's this is? Stop?
Speaker 3 (01:10:36):
Stop?
Speaker 1 (01:10:36):
You're wrong. When when you noticed Jonathan winning, heberg he misses.
He always gets really upset at me. From my opinion,
when's the last time Miami won all the Miami I
don't care in Miami questions about Texas. No, I know
the questions about Texas because you're looking at a vacuum
and I'm trying to tell you that it's every every
booster Miami, Oregon, Ohio, State, Alabama, Texas, Notre Dame A,
(01:10:57):
and M Georgia USC we got to win the championship
this year. I just named ten teams it's each won.
If they each won one, that that's ten years of championships.
It just doesn't add up. So if U two win,
it doesn't win anything. These next three years, you're going,
what is this defined doesn't win anything National championship doesn't
go the way all the way yet, that's see, that's
so stupid. They didn't win the national championship out of
(01:11:20):
one hundred and forty teams, so that they won. No, no, no,
they won nothing. You can't use one hundred and forty
teams because we've only talked about this before. It's only
about fifteen teams that win national champship year. So and
I didn't even mention Clemson or Florida State or I
don't know, Penn State's been up there, Michigan, I didn't mention,
so I that's just fifteen teams. Then so if all
(01:11:42):
all fifteen to those teams saying, hey, we need to
win this championship, okay, it's not really. Here's my statement.
If the University of Texas goes to the college football
Playoff in the next three years and doesn't win at
least once, okay, it'll be considered a major disappointment. That
was my statement. So if they're they don't one out
(01:12:03):
of twelve one year, one out of twelve the next year,
and one out of twelve or even sixteen or exactly,
you're not you're one out of sixteen and you don't
you're not the one out of sixteen, you're a failure. Okay, yeah,
I'm gonna go buy that. Yeah. Absolutely, If at the
University of Texas with the money that's being spent and
the recruiting advantages you have because you've got a wonderful
university with glorious facilities and you got more nil money
(01:12:24):
than you can spit at, I mean, yeah, I'm gonna
stand by that statement. You must have a national championship. Okay,
my opinion, and I like it. I'm gonna bring this
up later in a season. There's a difference between being
disappointed and then calling it a failure or a massive disappointment.
I'm gonna call it whatever you want to call it.
I'm going to say that has been a massive disappointment
(01:12:46):
in the last two years. Uh No, but it's been
disappointing there. But there's disputation levels this year are five
times higher than they were last year. En Yours, Queen
Yours had had his detractors. They're anybody into the University
of Texas fan that doesn't think that arch Maning is
going to just kick ass this year and potential next year.
I'm not convinced he's going to kick ass. Why based
on what Quinn you was the guy that wasn't very
(01:13:07):
good that he could not replace. Yeah, well as a
red shirt freshman, that's consist Sark was trying to play
political lines. I've got multiple starts. He got multiple starts
and did not take over the job. No, one's supposed
to be one hundred percent the most sought after college
football quarterback in a long period of time, probably since
Trevor Lawrence Frank Okay, how's he doing in the NFL
(01:13:28):
college Yeah? Yeah, So there's no guaranteed things. Yeah, he
was a number one, number one recruit, but so is
Quinn yours. My statement is this, if the University of
Texas does not win a national championship the next three years,
it will be considered a massive disappointment. That is my statement.
I'm staying with it. If you have you have h
does not win a championship this year in basketball, Kelvin
Sampson is a failure. He's a horrible coach. I didn't
(01:13:48):
bring up the University of Houston of Texas, I would
disagree with that opinion. Okay, well, no, you're wrong. I'm
right because if he doesn't win a championship. He's a
massive disappointment. He did choke last year. I don't need
your commentary. Yeah yeah, go back, get your massive disappointment,
go back, and I'm massively disappointed. I would say this,
(01:14:09):
if the University Usion does not win a national championship
based off the cruis like, you know what, I will
change it. It will be a massive asappointment. Yeah, yeah, it
doesn't mean it's a bad coach. I didn't take Caesar.
I should be fired. He should be hired coach massive?
Now you're now you're adding things. I never said that
Sarkasian should be fired. I didn't sad to see if
Circassian wasn't a good coach. I said, to be a
massive appointment. Okay, so you do a job and I
(01:14:30):
hire you, and you're a massive disappointment and I keep you. Yeah,
typically this show if he's a massive, well, this show
hasn't been that I got one for. You're a massive disappointment.
You should be fired? Should you hire a massive Will
you let me speak yet? The University of Houston massively
disappointed me? Yeah? Last year, there he is. And I've lived, Yeah,
you've lived. I didn't did I say Sarkesan would be fired. No,
(01:14:54):
you did cut the program down. No, you've been disappointed,
But is the program a massive disappointment? It's a massive
a pointment that we did not win the game. You're
massively disappointed, But is the program a massive disappointment? Is not? Okay,
you're saying Texas MS will considered a massive disappointment. Whatever.
(01:15:14):
Eleven Sports Talk seven ninety. You know I'm right seven
one three two one two five seven ninety. How if
I'm more offended with your take? Or the Seattle Mariners
uniforms they wore on Friday night? What the hell are
they wearing? The black pants? I mean, what is going
on with our major League baseball? You don't like those
with the Trident? No, I don't. I don't know. They're
(01:15:35):
all looks. Everybody's wearing any softball gear. I like them.
I like that. Now. I guess I'm just a sucker
for any kind of like royalish blue or that's I
wouldn't call that royal blue, I guess, but I like them.
I like the I like the Trident logo. Two. I mean,
the Seattle Mariners had some cool uniforms way back in
(01:15:56):
the day, but they're just mixing it up now, I'm
you mean, like the like they're really old school. When
they first were around in the late seven in the seventies,
the trend was there, but it was a much more
of a much more paler color of blue. Now they're
putting black in the uniform than they had black in
the uniform before. Okay, all right, that's just uniform stuff.
(01:16:17):
By the way, ATX hope girl, send us a photo.
Do you see the Steelers' retro uniforms or not? You know,
what are their alternates whatever they're wearing this year Steelers alternates? No, yeah,
haven't they always been black and yellow? Yeah, but they're
just going with a different I don't I can't even
describe what they are. Have you seen them yet? No,
I have not. Go look at my Twitter account. I
put them out there at sports Empty by the way,
(01:16:37):
if you want to fall by the way, if you
also want to follow me on Instagram at sports Empty
on that as well. These look like I don't know,
I mean, I don't even know where to tech alternates
or something. Well, like the nineteen thirties, you'd wear these
in the nineteen thirties with the black stripes down the
middle of it. In the white numbers and i's thing
in the pegs getting down the field. When is that
the helmet? Coming up? Next? The Canton Bulldogs the inn
(01:17:00):
against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the game of the week.
That's pretty good. The lads are only playing for thirty
five dollars this week, thirty five dollars, and they've got
jobs in the refinery. They'll be going to centers the
game's over. They can't go to overtime. Ah, three of
the young fellows are wearing their workboats. Hope this one
(01:17:21):
doesn't go to overtime. I just wanted to point out Bross. Yes, oh,
here we go. My girl was listening and she played.
She played the game, and she texted me okay, saying
that the Texas one was the truth as well. So
she was that's fine. Well, I mean, first of all,
it's just semantics at the end of the day, massive disappointment. Disappointment.
(01:17:43):
Let's go back to your point. I don't really want
to put you age on me. I am, I will.
I will absolutely be one hundred massive. This one doesn't
mean you don't. It doesn't make changes because coaching changes
are difficult, especially when you're talking about you know, like,
for instance, Uh, the Knicks were mass disappointed they lost
to the Pacers in the Eastern Conference. That's the thing,
I guess, as we can talk about is exactly what
(01:18:05):
we're what you're meaning with that is, is it a
massive disappointment to where And maybe I took it as
you're meaning massive disappointment meaning it's time for a regime chain. No,
that would have been one that would have been so
hot tacky that you should have attacked me. I never
mentioned a coaching I'm just saying that, I think because
I'm just like you. I'm a consumer of social media.
I'm a consumer of what's happening in the college landscape
(01:18:27):
of things. And every day it feels like, literally, Rossy,
I'm looking at somebody telling me that the University of
Texas stole another one recruit in a particular category. Yeah,
but that's the thing that's this has all just happened
the last couple of weeks, and that's good for them.
And I'm just saying, if I'm a Texas let me
tell you, I would dream Ross to have the kind
(01:18:47):
of positive publicity of the University of Texas has and
if that comes with like for instance, we get that.
With the University Houston basketball, I think there's pressure that
comes with that, and as a University of Houston alum
who doesn't get to ever feel that, Yeah, I'm gonna
be massively disappointed when they beat Duke to advance the
national championship game. I flew my ass from San Francisco
(01:19:09):
to Houston because I thought, finally, after forty years of
being a University of Houston fan, I was gonna win
a national championship. So, yes, that was a massive disappoint Yes,
you were massively disappointed, But the season wasn't a massive disappointment,
and the program isn't a massive disappointment. That's what I'm
saying is we're kind of I think we're just on
two different wavelengths a little bit, because I'm saying to me,
(01:19:29):
I took it as you're saying the program is. If
I say, hey, this coach has been at this program
that'll be seven years and it's a massive disappointment, that
means it's time for a regime change. I get that,
But I'm gonna say, let me just let's just dumb
it down before we get to the top of the
hour here. What will your take be Will you say,
oh not, oh Gollagy shucks, but damn I'm disappointed. But man,
(01:19:52):
the competition is so strong. If the University of Texas has
not won a championship, it depends what if for Arch
Manning tears his acl Well, you know what I'm saying,
provide everybody's helf. It depends. I don't know who are
they going up against. How do the games play out?
Do they get blown out in these games? Do they lose?
You know, it depends on so many different factors. I
just can't. I can't make a blanket statement like that.
I can, as a simplistic sports fan, say yes that
(01:20:14):
my Cougars are in the the one incredible hay. It'd
be like, for instance, the Atlanta Brave fans won one
World Series during their nineteenth dominance and a lot of
second place finishes. There is a lot of Atlanta Braves
fans if you go to Atlanta would say we were
disappointed the team did not do more. Yeah, we're disappointed
(01:20:35):
the Astros didn't win in nineteen oh but where the
Astros a massive disappointment. That's different. I will say real
quick that UT football you and me growing up has
never been at this caliber until now. So I won't.
I won't not since the Mac Brown, not since Mac
Brown was winning a championship with Vince Young and then
following it up with Colt McCoy where they won a
Fiesta Bowl in eight. They went to the championship in
game nine and uh and Colt McCoy got hurt in
(01:20:57):
the first quarter of that game. So yeah, and as
dad came in the field and to lay the game
for a long time. Not true, his son was hurt.
I still don't understand this is that. I just don't
get it. His son was hurt, and he went onto
the field to check on his son, and then he
got crushed and then he won a headset for the
second half. It's crazy. Oh my god. I would just say,
(01:21:18):
because I'm experiencing now, the University of Houston's got will
be pre season number one coming up. Yeah, that's a
massive disappointment to be RAS. If we don't want a
national championship, that's just me. That's not you, that's me. Okay,
(01:21:39):
welcome to Semantics seven ninety Cobo six, zir time. ROSSI
back with you here. I'll tell you what's not been
a massive disappointment. This show. Oh, I know we've enjored it.
And when we argue, I got news for y'all. It's authentic. Yes,
it ain't contrived. It's not staged. It's not definitely not staged.
Certainly not as vicious as two to say? H was
(01:22:03):
that you just grunting over there? What are you grunting
over there for? All right? All right, no, but what
with both of you? I'm gonna turn out some Joe Cocker.
It's only five minutes less than segments, so I can't
tell you the most. We had a what do we?
(01:22:24):
What do we? We were talking about soulfa voices? Oh, yeah,
you never want my list, blue eyed soul, Van Morrison,
white guys, white guys, So excuse me, that's what it was.
Van Morrison, chick, Joe Cocker chick, Michael McDonald check not
on my list. Oh this is the black guy, Bobby Caldwell. No,
(01:22:47):
this he's definitely a white guy. Yeah, Bobby Caldwell. I'll say,
Michael Bolton. You don't think Michael Bolton has hand no
soul crooner? I guess, okay, Michael McDonald has saw. I'm
sorry you're taking the l on that one too, all right,
Tom the wait, let's get stuff for me. Let's get
(01:23:09):
to the news. A dude, I feel like they're oh
Roy Orbison, hmm, what was his most hard driving? But
I could see you putting him in the conversation. But
I wouldn't take them over the other guys that brought up.
But I could see him in the conversation. Okay, go ahead,
(01:23:30):
the news the nude. Here's here's Roy Orbison of a
soulful sports headlines Rossford real, thank you, matt A lot
going on in Houston sports. Of course, you're Houston Astros
salvaging a game against the Seattle Mariners, avoiding the sweep,
avoiding their season being over. But Matthew injuries continued to
pile up. Essoch Paratus immediately I held with a hamstring injury.
(01:23:53):
The Astros have lost seven of their last nine. This
I found a little concerning. Dana Brown on the Astros
radio network yesterday on esik Paratus.
Speaker 6 (01:24:05):
Yeah, absolutely, waiting for the MRI. You know, hopefully it's
not as bad. You know, it's always tough when you
lose the guy that's been the most consistent for you
throughout the entire season. That's both defensively and offensively. He's
had a pretty good year for so, uh, you know,
we'll be paying close attention to this one. You know
(01:24:26):
it's going to be tough, you know, playing these next
stretching games without.
Speaker 1 (01:24:29):
Them normally no comment for me, I kind of say consistently,
I will comment. These comments are normally dripping with optimism.
I just did not get that feeling in that comment
from Dana Berger. It this way, if it's good news,
you'll hear about it today when Joe speaks to the media.
(01:24:50):
If he says I have to we're waiting on results,
that's never gonna be a good thing. Not usually good.
Hoping it's not as bad as we think is also
not a good way for to phrase it. Ashtros with
sixteen players on the injured list that is the most
in baseball, five of them on Houston's opening day lineup.
(01:25:10):
This also pointed out by It's kind of a content
creator on Twitter Cesspitis Family Barbecue baseball content. Excuse me,
what did you just say, Cesspetus Family Barbecue? You never
heard of them? Are? Are they as good as delicious?
I don't know? All right? Anyways, pointing out that the
Astros have nine hitters on the injured list. No other
(01:25:35):
major league team has more than six. There are a
lot of teams with a ton of pitching injuries, including
the Orioles, Diamondbacks, Metch Dodgers, Red Sox Astros have seven
pitchers on the il nine hitters. Nobody has more than six,
and they and the Orioles are the only teams with
more than four. I think they're the second most used pitchers.
(01:25:58):
I think they've used twenty seven. Diamondbacks are at thirty one.
I know that from earlier last week, and they've lost
seven of the last nine. How we feeling? We feel like,
how in the hell are they four games in front
of anybody? Be it hard to be they'd have a
hard time being four games up on a fourteen year
old pony league. Yeah, thank god. The aos kind of sucks.
Mariners have been playing better. They still won two out
(01:26:20):
of three game to game on the Astros. Have gained
a lot of gream ground on the Astros the last
couple of weeks. You're third in the American League, two
and a half games behind the Tigers, a game behind
the Blue Jays, two games ahead of the Yankees. How
they're the better than the Yankees is an absolute miracle.
Although the Yankees have had their fair serve injuries. Well,
they've had a lot of injuries, and they have their
(01:26:42):
run differentials almost double and the number one of home runs,
by the way, and it' been most of the year.
And by the way, what was this Brewers thing you
sent me? Oh? Yeah, I was inne braided at that time.
So your best, you're betting on the Brewers to win
the World Series. No, I'm just saying that every one
of those dorky stats that people like to use about
how great a particular offense is, they're like second or
(01:27:04):
third worst in baseball and they're twenty games above five hundred.
That's all I was saying. Okay, we'll see if that
wasn't an I'm just saying that sometimes the numbers don't
necessarily bear things. Sometimes there can be outliers, and I'm
sure there are some numbers that can back up and
figure out what's going on there. I'm gonna be honest,
I haven't done a deep dive into the season numbers
of the Milwaukee Brewers, whose pitching has been very good.
(01:27:25):
I was looking Lauren shia Hotti. I'm sorry, are you, okay,
can you focus for one second? Sorry? How about you
focus on Chris Paul reuniting with the the LA Clippers.
I was gonna say NBA Clippers, which I guess that's
true too. For his twenty first season, he's gonna try
to continue to pad his lead. Do you think, okay,
(01:27:46):
I'm not saying this is why he's continuing to play,
but he's got Lebron hot on his heels and the
all time assistant Do you think that's factoring in a
little bit? Okay? Because the money is four million dollars,
that's a lot of money. But for him, he's been
making nothing ten times at it in the last few years.
Where is Chris Paul on the all time point guard list? Ooh, well,
(01:28:08):
I'll tell you where he is in the all time
assist list. He's still second behind John Stockton. He will
not He's got basically twelve thousand, five hundred. Lebron James
is about a thousand assists behind. All Right, if I
need to point guard for a game, John Stockton or
Chris Paul, and you know Falling his heyday was great defender.
(01:28:32):
John Stockton was pretty good defensively. Chris Paul score. Yeah,
Chris Paul. Okay, I got Chris Paul, Magic Johnson. It's
magic magic yep, Chris Paul, how about this one, Magic Johnson,
John Stockton, Magic Johnson. Okay, how about I s're about
(01:28:55):
Oscar Robertson. We never saw play. Yeah, I was gonna
say Oscar Robertson vote, but I'll give you one. Chris Paul,
Isaiah Thomas, Chris Paul, Chris Paul, Gary Payton Great. Gary
Payne is considered the best defensive guard ever to play
in the NBA. The glove. Yeah, pretty good. Score that
(01:29:18):
goes for something, goes for a lot. Actually, he was
getting twenty points per game in his heyday, right, not
the assist guy that Chris was. He had a season
he had looks like five seasons of twenty plus points
per game. Gary Papon a longer career to Chris Paul.
Defensive Player of the Year once top five, it looks
(01:29:39):
like five six times, Chris Paul, I'm talking about Gary Payton.
So he only won one Defensive Player of the Year one? Yeah, No,
how did he lose to all those years? Six times?
Chris Paul twelve time All Star, six times, Steel Champ
five time Assists Champ Chris Paul over Gary pay nine
time All Defensive Team Chris Paul over Gary Payton, with
longevity giving him some bonus points two seasons twenty points
(01:30:02):
per game or more. Those are both in New Orleans
early in his career when he was just giving them shots.
But anything else is he? That is he's on the
mount Rushmore point guards? Huh, Magic Stockton, Chris Paul, Oscar Robertson,
Oscar Robinson, Robertson, Yeah, Robertson. Okay, that's your news. It noon,
No ww E raw tonight at Theaytota Center. The hell's that?
(01:30:24):
That's the wrestling. Okay, that's cool. Well, baby oil steroids, No, no,
they don't do steroids and they don't use oil. Maybe
maybe maybe back in the day, but not currently. Twelve fifteen.
That's the news at Dude seven one three two one
two five seven ninety an open ended serious question for
(01:30:48):
you folks that are thinking about the Astros the trade deadline.
I'll pose it to you next here on seven ninety
twelve twenty two. It is the Matt Thomas Show and
Ross we are with you today until two pm. Ross
with is today's edition of but believe or not coming
up at one fifty this afternoon. Hell if I know,
all right, that's good, all right. I brought this up
(01:31:08):
an hour ago, and I want to just see if
it marinates anymore with the audience is listening. By the way,
if you'd like to join us today, you may do so.
It's seven one three two one two five seven nine
zero seven one three two one two five seven hoty.
There have been times when we've been two weeks prior
to the trade deadline where we are right now, that
(01:31:30):
you and I have been quite demonstrave. Actually not two weeks.
It's ten days now. It's the thirty first correct on
the deadline. Yes, we've been pretty demonstrative in saying, hey,
this team is really close, this team's got a chance.
It would be criminal if the general manager, whether it
be uh, James click or Jeff Lno before him, Jeff bagwell, Jeff,
(01:31:56):
let's not know, or in this particular case in Brown,
Dana Brown, it'd be criminal if they didn't do any
if he didn't do anything, it would feel that way.
I gotta be honest. With all the horrific juju this
team has had this year, and the fact that this
organization does not have the prospects they are willing to
give up, and perhaps just as important, maybe don't have
(01:32:19):
the prospects that other teams value as prospects and correct
me if I'm wrong on this, if I change my
mind on this and in ten days. But I don't
think I would. I don't think I would crush the
organization if they kind of stood pat or did something
of a very minor nature. I don't. I don't think
it's fair. I don't think you have to you have
to crush your team every single time a decision is made.
(01:32:41):
Sometimes you gotta think about maybe they do know what's
going on, maybe they do know the modeling system better
than we do, which, of course the answer is they
better know the system better than we do. And ross
how many teams can go through the number of serious
I mean, we're talking serious injuries. Arrogetty Sirius injury. Myers
(01:33:02):
probably gonna be a serious injury. You're on an albare
serious injury. It probably means that you suck preadis hamstring.
Serious injury. These aren't just guys that have short shoulders
or uh broke a pinky sliding into second base. I
mean these are. This is many many weeks and or
(01:33:24):
months of these guys being gone. We don't even know
about Jemmy Paine. Jeremy Paine is not on any sort
of rehabit appearance at this point. I'm gonna tell you
right now, Houston, Texas, hold me to this. Please. I
ain't killing the squad if they don't go crazy in
the deadline. I'm with you on that. I would like
to see something, but especially the position players side. But
(01:33:47):
we'll see. Hmm. Yeah. Five. I was just because Chandler
was bringing this up. Your opening data lineup was Altuve,
Paradis out, Alvarez out, Walker underperforming, Diaz underperforming, Peena out,
Cam Smith good, Brendan Rodgers out and underperforming, and Jake
(01:34:09):
Myers out that's insane. And Brendan Rodgers frankly was a
late gasp grabbed to see if he gets something going
on to help l two Bay transition. You're trying to
get a long shot, Maddie. Yeah, guy who had been
a gold glover, who had shown some pop, but most
of it at course Field and I got one more thing,
(01:34:33):
a spot of attacking after the two losses this weekend.
I had a dumb ass on Twitter that was like
this one's on you know, a spot of this at
a spot I mean, and people would think we're going
to going, who are you? What are you doing? You
just mentioned forty four percent lineup is unavailable. Over fifty
five percent, if it's five, whatever it was, it's fifty
(01:34:55):
five percent of the opening day lineup. And we're not
toalking about September onst year. We're talking about this is
still July, which is about seventy games up to go,
and these aren't guys. It'd be crazy to say five
of the guys have hit the IL at some point.
They're all on the IL right now. Yeah. I just think, honestly,
(01:35:18):
if you're an Astro fan and sometimes you got somebody's
got to tell you this, just consider yourself blessed that
where they are, we are blessed. We're spoiled. We're so spoiled.
This fan base is spoiled. It just is. We've been
saying this for a couple of years. Yeah, because honestly,
a lineup of Zach Short, Taylor Trammel, Hey the baller,
(01:35:41):
Cooper Hummel all getting meaningful of bats would probably mean
you're about a twenty thirteen Houston Astros team offensively and
that's just the truth. At least they got eleven runs yesterday.
I mean, what's the Tucker's Kyle's brother's name, but one
it was originally press test. We say, come on, man,
(01:36:04):
he was mashed in Korea. And he also had a cycle,
a five hit cycle. I forgot about that. But it's
a it's a bunch of Press and Tuckers. Nice kids
can casually get you a hit, but it's not a
lot of that you'd want to build for the future.
For toy of the Astros didn't put a whole lot
of faith into Press and Tucker being a star and
for the right reasons. And I don't know if we
(01:36:28):
have to go from sports bar to sports bar to
people's houses and a crusade, a walking campaign, say hey,
let's let's think about this logically for a second. Now. Granted, now,
what exasperates the situation and doesn't help the Astros is
that all these players are hurt with a medical staff
that's largely untrusted. But honestly, and look, the medical staff
(01:36:52):
is needs to be seriously evaluated at the end of
the off season. I don't I don't think there's any
question about that. But they didn't do anything that Estoch
prede as he was running down first base yesterday. They
didn't hit the fly ball in the in the in
batting practice that landed on the thumb of uh Eric
is a freak thing. Mean, Jeremy Paine got hit by
a pitch by a pitch. I mean, these are some
(01:37:12):
things that we're out of their control. Now, how do
they rehabilitate them that's within their control? Yes, was Jordan
rushed back? They said, maybe they should have taken more
stock into the amount of pain he was in, even
though he had a similar injury that he's played through before. Yeah,
Jake Myers, I don't know how you could spin it
that he wasn't rushed back when he hurt himself in
warm ups getting back out there. Now, whose fault it is?
(01:37:36):
That's also another discussion. We don't know. But that's the
negative part is that you have all these injuries, most
of them nothing to do with the guys in the
back room going, let's hurt the flayer for us, you
know what I mean? Yeah, let's go have Josh Hader
throw eighty pitches to it. Could then he can do it.
Some former Yankees assistant there no, no, no, don't even
start conspiracy theories. Twelve twenty eight. It is a Matt
(01:37:57):
Thomas shill Wood Ross seven one three two one two
five seven ninety If you'd like to chime in, would
you be okay if the Astros just said, eh, it's funny,
or I'll throw the ori at you really quick, or
do you say you know what? Maybe we should we
the Astros should go get something because the American league
(01:38:19):
is so wide open. It's it's a it's a difficult
and that's why maybe Jim and Dane I've got to
be in the room by themselves, door closed, locked and
just have a heart to heart and say where are we?
Are we one player away? Are we one player away
plus returning healthy players? Or are we just snake bit
(01:38:41):
in twenty twenty five seven one three two one two
five seven ninety one twelve thirty four is a Matt
Thomas show a Ross. I need to creick one thing
over the weekend. I guess I didn't catch it. Ariante
ersa ursery sign. He's right, Thank god. We have a
(01:39:02):
tough time slipping on that. No, so all the Texans
draft picks are signed training camp starts later this week.
Wonderful uh that will feature Jayden Higgins wide receiver, Ryowa State,
Arianta Ursrie, the guard, Jalen Nowel Jalen's but we've got
a lot of Jalen's and Jaden's. It's fucking I'm doing
an NBA game. It's football. You go by last name.
(01:39:24):
It's good. That's right. If there is a theme to
the Texans training camp, are we just going to spend
all the time looking at the offensive line?
Speaker 3 (01:39:36):
That is?
Speaker 7 (01:39:36):
That?
Speaker 1 (01:39:37):
Is that what it's come down to, that's the biggest
hole in the team. Well, i'd say the biggest question mark. Yeah.
I mean, I mean when half the NFL websites on
the internet are ranking your offensive line thirty second, that's
not good. Yeah. And a lot of Nick Cayley speculation.
Nick Kyley yep, former Los Angeles Rams assistant now gets
(01:39:59):
to run his offensive the first time by himself. Yes,
I'm feeling good. Bobby is a bright mind. People love him.
M hm. People also love you. I was gonna say,
you tell about Bbby Sloan, you talking about Nick k Everybody.
Everybody loves the assistant to the assistant. When you become
(01:40:20):
you're the head guy. It's a little bit different. So
we'll see. Uh, there's nobody on God's Green Earth, even
the biggest daunch Texans Homer, they can say that Nick
Cayley is going to do a better job than Bobby Slowick.
Now you have to trust uh Demico, you have to
trust uh Frankly, you gotta trust CJ because probably pushed
(01:40:43):
Bobby Sloak out. If if if CJ was Team Slowick,
Bobby would still be here. You got to keep the
quarterback count. I think I would agree with that. And
also I didn't seem like Demko was loving Bobby slok
by the it was lukewarm endorsements. Put it that way, Yeah,
(01:41:04):
which he didn't really. He always stumps for everybody and
and press availabilities, and he didn't do that. The last week.
They're like, what do you think about bobbys lolog He's like,
h yeah, we're gonna evaluate everything. Yeah, the wether's nice here,
we're looking for a good crowd kind of goes off
to something else. That's what I was like, Oh, I
think Bobby Sloaks Kowen and my guess is Bobby Doowitt.
Speaker 3 (01:41:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:41:25):
I think when you're a coach, matter what position is,
you better not get a whole lot of real estate
when you're an offensive coordinator. Yeah, you're absolutely unless it's
one of the coaches calling the plays. Generally, you're gonna
be the guy who's going to get the biggest praise
when things are getting well, besides the quarterback, of course,
and then you're gonna be all often be the fall guy.
(01:41:45):
Any play, you could run the same play ten times,
nine times it works, you're a genius. The one time
it doesn't, you're an idiot. That's exactly right. So, uh,
you know, I don't know if the most basic elementary
Texans fans going to have any thought about the about
Nick Keyley in the month of July, and probably shouldn't,
and for that matter, shouldn't have a real definitive thought
(01:42:07):
on him in August. We got what we gotta watch
this thing play out. All I know is he's got
you would think two good running backs now, mm hmm,
depending on what Nick Chubb's got left in the tank. Oh,
you're putting Chubb is a good course running back. I'll
thirty one Damian Pierce. Uh, okay Pierce and or Chubb
(01:42:29):
is the good second running back. I'm keeping my expectations
of Chubb Nick Chubb extremely low as compared to I mean, yeah,
I mean I don't do it. Don't do it if
I was setting myself up and I didn't want to
do it. Uh, he's going to have at least one
excellent Rode receiver and maybe out of the second round
(01:42:52):
guys could be even second. Third round guys could be
even better. I mean there's a pretty good puncher chance
that one. I would say, guys is going to be
a nice work marks. No talking about the wide receiver,
thinking about running backs. I got a strike. We have
to turn an MLB network. If it's just not please
do so. It's helping us both hurting or helping. Can't
(01:43:13):
move right now? All right? Oh no, but Cam Robinson
the big question mark. We're gonna stare at him. Arian
He's ready, Blake Fisher's ready, Juice Scrugs better be ready.
Fisher and Scrugs have got to make the best I
mean we from what Cam Robinson, no one in the
(01:43:35):
NFL when he was signed here was like, oh that
makes the Texans offensive line better that that typically was
described as all right, that's a guy that's a segue guy,
that's a that's a placeholder. Huh, system guy, I don't
know if you catch lightning in the bottle as an
offensive lineman, especially with the pressure rate that he went
through last year, don't you agree, offensive lineman, do you
(01:43:59):
have a difficult time finding the fountain of youth? I
will say this though, a lot of times you can
see inconsistencies with especially NFL players year to year because
generally guys can be playing through something. You can have
a you know who knows, hamstring, calf whatever, thumb what,
(01:44:21):
and and so you when production goes down sometimes you
want to make sure it's down for a couple of years.
So Cam Robinson has had good years. Maybe he told them, hey, guys,
I had a real bad die Injuri I was playing
through and now I'm gonna be much better this year.
Or maybe they had some intel I don't know I'm
making I'm not, you know, speculating complete speculation here. I'm
trying to think of. You also get a good offensive
(01:44:42):
line coach and system that put you in the best
possible position to take advantage of your strength. And that's
another thing like Laramie Tunzel's uh, a lot of his
pressure rates were higher than normal last year, but a
lot of that it's people that I read who evaluate
offensive linemen have said a lot of that seems to
them to be been miscommunications with the He had six
(01:45:02):
different guards to his right all season long. So if
you have six different guards and you're trying to and
one of the things that really bothered the Texans last
year was stunts and twists, that's gonna make it harder
to communicate and get the body language going or do
whatever to try to make sure you're all on the
same page all the time. So that's laermy Tons. So
that's not Cam Robinson. But I'm saying there are things
that can be contributing factors, factors rather than he's just
(01:45:26):
in a huge decline. But also he could just be
any huge decline. I don't know, Well, you know what
you just describe you're talking about. You know, sometimes these
coaches will tell you how much they enjoy the flexibility
of having swing guys. Maybe you have too much swing,
Maybe you have too much uncertainty that you wouldn't mind
being able to put out an offensive line that stays
together for a three or four week stretch. Yeah, you'd
(01:45:47):
rather do that, But I mean it's c NFL. It's
guys are getting hurt and or underperforming, and yeah, I
would just put it that way. Now, as far as
CJ is concerned, if the offensive line goes from being
preseason rated thirty first or thirty ath thirty second, depending
(01:46:09):
on who you believe to middle the pack, does it
all of a sudden give him a few more seconds
a throw. Does it give him a chance to be
just a little bit more accurate? Because I thought maybe
if there's anything you really want to look at from
year to year, it perhaps was his accuracy level that
probably took the biggest dip. I think with the young
receivers you have, I think that the addition of Christian
Kirk as long as he's healthy, as long as he's healthy,
(01:46:31):
is going to be underrated. Nico Collins back as well.
I think this is the well last year was a
great full complement of weapons, but guys were hurt. So
dare I say this is going to be the best
weapons he's had provided that these lightning in the bottle
(01:46:51):
guys like it doesn't seem possible that Kirk and Chubb
both be zeros, right, I'm more confident in Kirk. He's
had some injury issues, but he's going to fill that
slot roll nicely and I think he's going to be good.
And you don't need him to run a four to four.
You'd like him too, but those days are long gone.
That's fast. I guess possession receiver's gotta be shifty, good hands.
(01:47:17):
But yeah, of nik First of all, niko Is is
one of the arguably a top five receiver in football.
But yeah of Kirk Higgins. No, l you don't need
all those guys to be great. You can get one
or two of them. Tank Dell. Of course, we're just
gonna I'm gonna write off for the season right now.
I got terrible news for you. You're right off his career. Yeah.
(01:47:41):
I don't want to. I don't want to, but I can.
I can. I can see this from a mile away.
And it's not because he doesn't have desire. Doesn't mean
he doesn't play right slide to build guys even I
mean he's undersized for undersized and that was part of
the problem coming out of college was he can be
able to take the talent of the NFL. And I
(01:48:02):
don't think it's coincidental or accidental now greant, and one
of those was they were flukish type injuries. But guys
that are twenty pounds heavier than three or four pounds
or inches taller might be able to stand the types
of things that Tank couldn't go through. I hope I'm wrong,
because you got we gotta love our uh guys, but
(01:48:22):
I don't. But slide of build was what was a
concern going in. Yes, he has to win with explosion,
and after that massive knee injury and back to back
leg injuries, where is that explosion going to be? I
think that's a fair to wonder about when we return.
I never thought I would say this is a tease
a w NBA labor discussion. Oh no, not like not
(01:48:47):
like pregnancy. I'm gonna do five minutes of googling and
pretend I'm in an expert in this next segment. All right,
it's going to be a very short segment. All right,
real quick. Wow, some I guess breaking news, sad news
in today's edition of Believe It or Not. I mean
(01:49:09):
you didn't know anything yet, just being honest, Malcolm Jamal
Warner feels a little hot off the presses best known
for being theo on The Cosby Show has passed away
at the age of fifty four. TMC has an unconfirmed
or reliable source who says Warner has died a result
of an accidental drowning. Unconfirmed. Okay, we're not doing believe
(01:49:32):
it or not. An unconfirmed but reliable TMZ drowning. Okay, no, no, no,
no no, they're saying the cause of death is Okay,
but he's dead. I mean that happens people go into
the ocean and get caught by a current or fall
out of a boat or who knows. Yep. Theodore Huxtable
(01:49:53):
was his most famous show. He had been doing some music,
He was on some other cartoons, and he hosted a
podcast as last podcast he dropped three days ago called
not All Hood. Hm. Wow, I loved The Cosby Show.
(01:50:15):
I love The Cosby Show. It's gonna tell you that
right now. Uh. I don't even know what to say.
I'm just awkwardly laugh think about me on radio. It's
kind of crazy, like how many times people just die
on like and like it's not our fault. Oh yeah,
(01:50:36):
this says a family vacation in Costa Rica. Oh no,
Wikipedia saying I was on the air. You don't know this, John,
that I was on the air in Minneapolis when Michael
Jackson died. Are you serious? I was, And back in
the day TMZ would report it. Nobody believed TMZ until
right out on the Map Map. Yeah, they were first
(01:50:56):
on Kobe Bryant too. M hmm they were. People didn't
believe it. Yeah, I was in high school there. No
one could believe it. All right, shut up? One more
one more thing to make this segment even more awkward.
Did you hear about the MRI death over the weekend?
Somebody was wearing a chain or something right Long Island
man got stuck into an MRI machine. He was wearing
(01:51:19):
a twenty pound chain necklace. Oh, that's got to be
against the nurses. That what d pounds of necklace? First
of all, that would kill me just wearing twenty pounds
of a necklace. It wasn't flavor flave, was it. No
guy by the name of Keith mcows or rest in peace,
(01:51:40):
sixty one years old? Wow, twenty pound necklace. Now the
question is was he told I mean I would many pounds?
Is your a necklace? Man? I don't wear a Nicolas?
When's the last time you wore a neck I'm trying
to I can't. Maybe in high school in a social
setting zero times. Oh because you're a chain that No,
(01:52:01):
hell no, it's still take it into the MRI machine. No,
I've never worn a necklace. I've I haven't worn a
watch probably in ten years, fifteen years. I've worn beads
at Marti Gras. I've had beads before myself, but not
at Marti Gras in yourself. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no,
(01:52:23):
that's not true. What you just said is not true.
My god, what is it wrong with you? Shot it
from downtown. That's gonna cost your team another touchdown? Alright,
we win? No, no, it's gonna cost you. It's gonna
be you were you were gonna lose fifty six to
(01:52:43):
seven iron anyways, war, how did we go from the
death of Malcolm Jamon Chain? And then that's right? And
the beads ross? All right, let's go to the phones.
Uh please needs to apologize to me. That's good. Would
you put online two for minutes computer today? Yeah, that's fine,
(01:53:06):
Nigel on sevenel, what are you saying sorry for? I'm
very curious, Matt.
Speaker 9 (01:53:11):
This is a sincere apology. You made a prediction before
the start of the baseball season, and about a month
in I called you and made fun of you and
said that that was the most ridiculous prediction you could
have made about Yadier Diaz leading the team in home runs.
But I didn't realize that you had inside information that
(01:53:32):
he would literally be the only starter left on the.
Speaker 1 (01:53:34):
Team by the end of the year. That's exactly right.
Speaker 9 (01:53:37):
I'm guessing that you probably are going to be correct
on your prediction. Well, I wanted to say I'm sorry
for laughing at you.
Speaker 1 (01:53:44):
Thank you need You'll have a great day. And by
the way, many many kudos for calling on a Monday
and thinking about this and saying, you know what, I've
got to call and apologize to Matt Well, he's still third, yes, third,
he is third, thank you, with the entire team on
the IL And I said that that was crazy unless
your doun's or there's a lot of injuries, and it's
been both, so I'm not giving you real I'm really
(01:54:06):
not giving you credit. And he's still well behind Jose
Al Duve and by the way, another unpopular taking them.
But to give you if I'm okay, you'r Dow's ip.
It's just this, Okay, you can get if you want
to get some manical man I h and IP. That's fine.
I'm writing it down on write it down, type it in, Okay.
(01:54:27):
Injury prone it's Matt and I have argued for years
for those that don't know, Yeah, injury history and injury prone.
To me, you can't. It's these guys are pushing their
bodies to the limit. Guys get hurt. It is what
it is. Doesn't mean that they're fragile. To me, injury
prone means you're fragile, and I don't think you are unfragile,
but not necessarily fragile. But are there things in his
body that are not allowing him to participate in a
(01:54:49):
sport that requires one hundred and forty games? Well, he's
had knee injuries, he's had multiple surgeries on his knees
and he's been good since then. We heard they were creaky.
The hands have been an issue twice, yes, and an
oblique injury you need, That's what Destie Baker said. He's
what thirty six? No, he's like twenty okay, Well he's
like twenty seven seven? No, hold on Okay, I could
(01:55:10):
be wrong. Yeah, twenty eight, he's twenty. Lunch bet in
two thousand and thirty six. You're ready, No, I'm not
betting in two thousand and thirty six. Yeah, lunch bet. Okay,
drive through? Well, will yard On ever play one hundred
and thirty games again in the season? Yes, okay, okay,
bet is made when he retire? Me write this down
on the file. Put that way deep in the file.
(01:55:31):
Gary in Spring at twelve fifty six on The Matt
Thomas Show at Ross before we get at the top
of the hour, Gary, what do you have for us
on this glorious hot in human Monday.
Speaker 7 (01:55:41):
Hey, guys, great show is always mad. I'm not going
to do a shut your bomass on one.
Speaker 1 (01:55:45):
Okay, say what did you shot? Why did you tell
me to shut my bum and that I was hurt
by that? Gary?
Speaker 7 (01:55:51):
Well, that's okay, we all get over it all right.
Speaker 3 (01:55:54):
Hey.
Speaker 7 (01:55:54):
I wanted I wanted to bring up a couple of
things on the Astros, and I had no idea when
I watched the Astros play the Rangers last time, that's
who you got to watch out for the Rangers. I
had no idea their pitching Steph, was that good? Those
three pictures they face they were all aces on the
Texas Rangers.
Speaker 1 (01:56:11):
So I'm thinking that's the one that you got to
watch out for. Not to seattle, but uh, let.
Speaker 7 (01:56:16):
Me tell you. When I was watching the game yesterday,
that was a great game, and when they hit those
back to back home runs, it was Walker And who's
the other guy that hit it?
Speaker 1 (01:56:27):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (01:56:28):
Who this?
Speaker 1 (01:56:30):
Wait? Tremail?
Speaker 3 (01:56:33):
Yeah? Yeah, you know what I hollered at.
Speaker 7 (01:56:35):
I just jumped up and screamed back to back.
Speaker 10 (01:56:37):
You know what.
Speaker 7 (01:56:38):
I hollered as loud as I could when they hit
those home runs.
Speaker 1 (01:56:42):
Oh this is a loaded question, but go ahead.
Speaker 7 (01:56:45):
I hollered wit.
Speaker 1 (01:56:48):
You know why I hollered that, Rick? You're a Rick
Flair fan?
Speaker 3 (01:56:54):
Nope?
Speaker 7 (01:56:55):
Who was pitching for the other team?
Speaker 1 (01:57:00):
I don't remember what is wh woo was pitching both times?
Speaker 7 (01:57:09):
Anyway, good show, guys, talk to you later.
Speaker 1 (01:57:11):
Thank you, Gary. Maybe I should do better to have
a pay attention to the opposing hit pictures. That's fine,
Brian was good. I mean I was watching the game,
but I was I had a few. I was in
nap mode all day because I worked till one third
in the morning. You know, when you've worked till that time,
you just can't go to bed at one. You know,
you had to get home and you have to you know,
wake up, and you have to take the dogs out
(01:57:32):
of your whole day off. I know, it screws your
whole day up. So I was in and out of naps.
That's okay, and they won, all right. Twelve fifty We
got an hour left to go. So what are we doing?
I'm believing or if we're not doing a Jamain Warner,
that sucks. He's only fifty four. It's not good. Could
do athletics college football program valuations in three years? Twelve
(01:57:57):
fifty eight, they have Texas at number one, yep, which
means whatever that means. It doesn't mean a hill of beans,
means a lot of program valuations. I mean you can't
sell the program, like the valuation of the Rockets makes sense. Well,
and I else got to help Texas number one, good
for them? Good for them, which means they need to
win a national championship or they should fold up this program. No,
(01:58:20):
I didn't say that at all. Maybe relegated to like
the the SFA, the South of the Conference, for sure.
Twelve fifty nine on Sports Talk seven ninety Game one
O four Sports Talk seven ninety. It is the Matt
Thomas Show with roster. Got some folks that are online.
We'll get to you in just a couple of minutes.
Ross time for us to run through the current twenty
(01:58:42):
six man roster for the Astros. Can you find us
some music for that? I mean, we can go medical
if he wanted to. I don't know if you want to,
but we could go medical. Not really, what do you
want some uh some Tom Waits or whatever? I don't
know who's Tom wait? Oh wait, Jim? Who's that guy?
Bobcat Goldthwaite. Who's the name of the guys he is? Yeah?
(01:59:05):
No way, yeah, I don't believe you. Yeah, definitely dead.
Well may he rest? Sure? Uh? Here? How about that?
I don't know what do you want to? Just clicking random?
But okay, I like this, is this player really an
astro right now? Or should he be with the Space Cowboys.
(01:59:28):
I'll go by quickly. One? Okay, A bray you check?
Am I supposed to be writing these down?
Speaker 3 (01:59:33):
No?
Speaker 1 (01:59:33):
I'll use my hands. Oh see see the shut out ahead?
A bray you Brian? Yes, he's good. Brown's good. Colton Gordon.
Is he pitching well up to be an as a
major league baseball pitcher. He kind of is, but he's
he wouldn't be if the team's fully healthy, he wouldn't
be on it. So he'll be number one. Gusto two
(01:59:56):
Hater check, Brian King check, mccullor's check. Naress No, no, no,
he would be fully healthy. Out three Oakert check or check,
Susa check, Valdez check, Brandon Walter, No, no, that's four.
Let's go to rin catcher's Victor Krrottini check, DS check.
(02:00:20):
Let's go to rinfielders ourselves is not in there no longer? Yeah,
Dubond check, No, Dubonds of stopped. Bryce Matthews, No, that's five.
Jack Short six, John Singleton seven, Christian Walker, don't comment
(02:00:40):
to the to the outfielders, Al Tuove check, Cooper Hummel eight,
Chas McCormick I would say fourth outfitter yes, Cam Smith, yes,
Taylor Trevelle nine, Shay wickham ten so ten hold on,
let me get my calculator out. Don't hurt yourself. Ten
(02:01:04):
divided by twenty six is thirty eight point four to
six percent of the team is really not an astro,
rounding up thirty eight point five rounding that up. That's
thirty nine, rounding that up. That's forty, rounding up as
two mcdamn many players, and they have a four game
leading the American League. Wie. Yeah, but they've lost seven
(02:01:26):
of the last night. All right, ladies and gentlemen, I
come to you at one seven on this glorious Monday afternoon.
Thirty eight percent of your team would be a Space
Cowboy port. You know what, you gotta feel bad for
Space Cowboys. Yeah, they can't even fill the team. Now, No,
(02:01:50):
what's the guy's name, story, Trevor, No, what is the manager? Boy? Oh,
it's just on the tip of my tongue, the manager
of the Space Never Ending Stop. We'll look it up.
You're no good for me, Space Space Cowboys manager. Don't
be in your cargoing. I know is. I'm looking it up.
(02:02:12):
I got it. Don't they tell you you? Okay, Mickey Story,
poor Mickey Story. M Well, at least you get yourself
another I mean, nobody's ever gonna think you need to
do a great better job. Yeah, what kind of record
that they had doesn't matter. I think they're about five
hundred problem. Mean which means he's probably gonna get a raise. O. Hey,
(02:02:34):
the road offensive numbers have been great. I mean, I
know his he doesn't get big money Mickey Storry does,
but he makes probably decent living. What would you guess?
I have no idea. I couldn't tell you in a
million years. I don't even know what managers make. But
I mean he gets they get the freaking fly miles.
That's not a bad deal, right, Aren't they just getting
(02:02:55):
car service from Sugar Lane. I'm talking about when they
go like to Reno in Vegas and Abuquerque? Is he
booking his own flights? Well, they're going on team travel
and he's probably got a deal sitthing. You know, let
me my own one past account or whatever it is. Okay,
I don't know. Okay, So Mickey story shout out to you,
my friend. Sixty two thirty eight percent of your team
(02:03:16):
is with the Astros. Keep on keeping on. Let's see.
Oh they do this by oh what they're eleven and
eight in the second half is not bad? You know
why they do that, don't you? Champion? There's champ first
half champions the second half Championships has changed so much
that if you have stuck with the bad roster, you
get a chance. The first half they were in second
place of the Pacific Coast East, thirty nine and thirty six.
(02:03:40):
It's up for all the you know, Pacific Coast West.
That's Vegas, Tacoma, Reno, Sacramento, and Salt Lake. Those are
all good places to go hang out. Well, that's where
the ball is flying out of the park. Yeah, I
mean average score is twenty nine to nine. But it's fine,
that's good. Yeah, that's entertainment. You go to a minor
league game, you want to see one nothing, No, you're not.
First of all, you're never gonna go to a game
(02:04:01):
in Reno and see one nothing if any of that,
or they're all running on a rehab start. That's true.
All right, let's go to the phones. Talk to Javier
online one Javier, whether it's at won ten on Sports
Talk seven ninety Javier, Good afternoon to you.
Speaker 3 (02:04:16):
Good afternoon, Matt Ross. I just wanting to say thank
you for once. I want some tickets hearing your show
last month to the State's Concert. It was a great show.
I appreciate you guys. Also wanted to say that the
Astros I think they're doing the hell of a job
for what they have. And it's still a long season
the second half. I know we started off bad, but
(02:04:37):
I think we're gonna get it together. And yeah, I
think a World Series in the future for us, you
know what I mean, our pitching. We need to get
it together. But I like it O. I like the championship,
like we got the experience. We're winners.
Speaker 1 (02:04:50):
We just win.
Speaker 3 (02:04:51):
That's all we do is win. We're not the Rangers.
We win, and I think we're gonna find a way
to win. So go Astros and I appreciate you guys.
Speaker 1 (02:04:59):
Thank you, Thank you. Javier. A good time of the
contra as did I the Sticks concert? Yeah, you were
belting it out. I heard they don't play the horses.
They don't play their most famous song. However, though, sailing
Away Lady, No sailing away is is uh criss cross?
No Sticks has a say I'm sailing way, that's them, right,
(02:05:20):
doesn't sound familiar? Come on, no, it's got that long
piano intro. Come say a aw way, Yeah that's Sticks right, Yeah,
but it wasn't. I'm sailing that's theirs. What they starts off,
I'm sailing the first lyrics, right, but they do because
the cartmen had to sing the whole song back in
the day. Yeah somebody knows, Yeah, yeah, you got it? Okay, yeah,
shut up. That's their most famous song. To me, I'm
(02:05:43):
not a huge Sticks fan, but my son wanted to go,
so I.
Speaker 3 (02:05:45):
Went with him.
Speaker 1 (02:05:46):
Mister Roboto might be uh, oh wait, Come sail Away?
Was this is the Grand Illusion? Well then you really
have need to apologize. Wait a second, Okay, they did, Yeah,
they did do Come sail Away top ten hit. Yeah,
but but uh, Babe, the Grand Illusion was the album.
The best song of theirs is Babe, and they don't
(02:06:07):
do Babe anymore? What about Renegade Renegade's goodne Jam. I'm
putting Renegade ahead of Babe Babe. I think it's their
most popular song. I mean, oh no, the old Late Lady.
I thought she said Lady Lady is somebody else. I'm
getting Lady and Babe. No Babe is definitely their song.
No Lady is Stix nineteen seventy three. Is it really Yeah? Oh,
(02:06:28):
that's not like the Commodore's Lady. There's got a bunch
of songs with lady in it. Well, duh. People like
to sing songs about their ladies. Really did you go
with the ladies? Man with a lady? All right? One
thirteen on The Matt Thomas Show with Ross. We're gonna
make it. We are, but we're warder. That'd be the
(02:06:53):
freshest one. I'm not doing no, no, no, I'm not doing
it first. You do it tomorrow if nothing else comes up. Okay,
believe it or not. This is a stick song. No,
it's highly googlele how we can do Oh we didn't
bring up the WNBA stuff real quick? Oh, that's right,
We'll do that after we talk to I have been waiting,
(02:07:14):
they have been with baited breath, James and Alvin. We'll
get to your WNB. No, we we'll get to your
thoughts about the astros and our WNBA labor conversations all
straight ahead on Sports Talk seven ninety special shout out

Matt Thomas Show with Ross would be a great place

(02:07:59):
Mt at Sports seven aunty dot com, and we would
love for you to be a part of the Matt
Thomas Showed Ross and Sports Talk seven to Aunty Family
one twenty Sports Talk seven eight. Really quick before we
go back on the phones, Rossie. Look, the WNBA has
not made a dime since its beginning, and it's been
(02:08:19):
well documented. I do believe they are turning things around.
Kitlin Clark a lot of that, Angel Reese a little
bit of that. We've seen the value for these WNBA
franchises going up. The expansion numbers are going up in
terms of money. That is, these these cities are paying
to get these teams. So I believe there is a
turnaround to it, and I do believe that there probably
(02:08:43):
was room for some negotiation when it came to salaries
and whatnot. Again, I don't get in the weeds to
that because I'm not involved with that, don't pay attention
to it. I'm just never a fan of T shirt
wearing person or putting things on my shoe. Uh huh.
What I think they were going to get and they
(02:09:05):
got it, was you put those shirts out. Some people
that were on their side really loved it, but most
people who don't care for the WNBA took it as
yet another example of why to make fun of the WNBA.
And that's where I think the negative came out of
this was instead of saying, all right, there are real
issues that need to be discussed between this players association
(02:09:26):
and the ownership group, all you wind up doing is
becoming more memes and more you didn't lose any money,
and more people sending fake shirts and just general it
didn't work. And then on top of it, the couple
of girls on there are women that were talking about
the shirts and they said, well, yeah, and nobody from
(02:09:47):
Team Caitlin wore our shirts. I mean they were being
caddied towards each other. It was a bad In my opinion,
this will not change a bad attempt at trying to
explain their side of things. I just think the shirts
were a bad, bad idea and they got really negative
connotation on it from social media, from TV shows, from
(02:10:10):
radio shows, I'm sure, to magazines when they were trying
to they may have legitimate argument, best serve not to
put it on T shirts that make you look like
you're not that look like it just gave more fuel
to the fire for people who don't like the WNBA.
And that's my only point. Okay, Yeah, a couple of things.
(02:10:34):
Anytime there is a labor dispute, especially one as public
as players versus owners, it is always the job of
both sides to get the public on their side. Things
go better, I think for either unions or owners if
(02:10:57):
the public feels like they're siding with them. So this
was a move by the players to get the people
on their side, to make a statement. That's why they
did something Publicly, they're like, yeah, pay us what you
owe us. It's you know, catch you enough phrase. But
then it's very easy for the public, which for some
(02:11:17):
reason they didn't plan for this, to say, Hey, you
put into Google how much money did the NBA WNBA
makew are you doing this? I've never done this before.
Oh you want to know how much they made last year?
They lost fifty million dollars. So then what I saw
in shirts were pay us what you What is that?
(02:11:40):
Let the shirts say pay us what you owe us? Yeah,
and then I saw a bunch of shirts said minus
thirteen you owe the WNBA thirteen million dollars or whatever
it is. But also I understand and I don't know
how the details of this WNB labor dispute unfortunately, but
my understanding is that they have a new multi billion
(02:12:01):
dollar media deal, and if the league was so unprofitable,
they wouldn't have a two hundred and fifty million dollar
expansion fee where people are paying a quarter billion of dollars.
So what they're thinking, I'm not not even think those
aren't true. That's absolutely Again, if they want to have
their own labor conversations, I'm good with that. That's what
(02:12:23):
you want to do. And they have some evidence going
their way that is in the argument. I'm just talking
about the presentation of the shirts, and this isn't anything.
Shirts normally don't make a difference, and there's aggravate already
a group people that just want to know when people
got mad about any of you grow up. Who cares
if you don't even watch that? I would say ninety
five percent of the people who are commenting on this
(02:12:45):
don't care about WNBA basketball at all. They just want
to dunk on WNBA basketball. So I would say that
if you don't care and you think it sucks and
it's a horrible sport, then leave it alone. Why are
you taking the time to post and be all upset
about something you claim to not care about. That's number one.
But if you've met anybody, I mean with social media,
(02:13:08):
we do care. We do comment on things we don't
care about. That's true. I go, you say you don't
care about it, but then you do because you keep coming.
You're like, right, oh, what I don't care about this? Well,
how come you got fifty tweets about it if you
don't care about it. Those two things are driving in anything. Yeah.
But anyways, I understand is I don't know how how
many years is this laborer agreement? Are going to be four?
(02:13:28):
I don't know, generally it's five or ten years, right,
So I'm gonna imagine that the owners or whoever are
negotiating on the old revenues and the players want to
negotiate on the new revenues and the potential growth to
where they don't want to sign a deal to where
they think they're going to get screwed if this league
continues to be popular and start to be more profitable,
to where they're going to be losing out on some cash.
(02:13:51):
So that's what I think the pay you with us,
pay us what you owe us. I agree the optics
are bad for a league that has never turned a
profit ever. Once they're saying things are turning better, so
we need a little bit of that, And I don't
necessarily disagree with that. Again, I don't know how much
better they're getting. I don't know how much that they've
been in over the years to say, well, finally we're
making some money. We need this money back and we
(02:14:11):
put into this league. You know. But you also get
WNBA players, And this is another thing I imagine. There
are players and people who are involved in the players'
union who are reasonable, but then you have people who
go out and say crazy stuff like they think they
need to be paid as much as NBA players, which
is ridiculous. Yeah, they don't make a fraction of the revenue.
They literally make no revenue as of last year, and
(02:14:32):
their seasons are only four months. They only play thirty
games and the call. You know, the ratings aren't as
good the affaising is. I mean, there are some things
that are working well for me, but why do those
two women go after Team Caitlin now on that and
saying those girls in rush and I don't even know
what you're talking about. Oh, clearly your for utab's got
a lot of WNBA hate does all right, So that's
(02:14:53):
the obligatory WNBA conversation for the show. And yeah, I
just would say if I'm mad about someth I'm not
running a go pern a T shirt about it. Yeah,
And I mean, pay us what, pay us what you
owe us? Whence your league is losing you could the
very most recent history of the league is losing money.
I don't know what's gonna happen in the twenty twenty
five season, but I imagine sponsorships are up, Attendance is up.
(02:15:17):
That's why they'll get it resolved. News are up, That's
why they'll get it resolved. They'll figure it out. I mean,
maybe they could make a short term deal. I don't know.
How long is this CBA deal supposed to be for.
I don't know. And we'll let them figure it out. Okay,
but that's like an our obligatory WNBA Labor conversation, James
and album. We'll start with you next one twenty seventy
is our time. It is the Matt Thomas scheld Ross.
(02:15:38):
If you want to join us, come on Amy with us.
We're not talking to WNBA Labor. We can talk to
Astro's up and Texans training camp opening up a couple
of days, okay, And we're not doing Malcolm Majore, Cam
robertson the goat. We're not doing Malcolm Jamal Warner. Are
we believe or not? No? Or are we? Did you
(02:16:00):
tell me the category EET or no? I don't know
what it is. We're gonna make it up. We're doing
in twenty three minutes seven one three, two one two
five seven. Nutty a Twitter listener of ours, appreciate everybody
that does listen to the show, whether you're on Twitter
or not. At rs j R d K sent me
this apparently the University of Memphis, and we'll go to
(02:16:21):
James this one second. Here the University of Memphis called
the Big twelve and said, if you let us in
your league, we'll bring Twitter and fifty million dollars in
sponsorships to the table. Okay, I e FedEx. Okay, if
you know what's okay, let's be honest, it's FedEx. Pick
twelve said no thanks. Hmm. Memphisis can't catch a break.
(02:16:47):
Big twelve is from Brett McMurphy. Big twelve quote not
interested in adding Memphis despite school offering two hundred and
fifty million dollars in sponsorship to the league. Memphis was
trying to buying the way into Big twelve. This is ridiculous.
(02:17:07):
Where are we in the world today where there's a graphic,
you know, it normally says like a team won a
championship or eliminated. It says pass. Yeah, Mark, it's a
big serious it's very unseerious. Whoa h s f A
also asking for entrance in the Big twelve man offered
(02:17:30):
offered a happy meal, all right, and mcflurry.
Speaker 4 (02:17:34):
Okay, I'll pray to the Lord. So bad wins not happening.
You could pray you one to that happened. Don't forget, though, Jonathan,
I'll be here. Don't forget, Jonathan. You shouldn't forget. You
started this. You started this, Jonathan, Yeah you yeah, I
would have stayed away from this.
Speaker 1 (02:17:52):
You know it's okay, I said it early for a reason.
Well I got I got some good news for you, Jonathan.
Have you seen the valuations of power for college football
programs from the athletic and where they would rank if
they were available in an open market. Now, make explain
what this is. It's made up. The athletic basically made
(02:18:15):
this up program valuation projections. If in theory, a private
equity firm wanted to purchase these programs, how much would
they go for. They have the Texas Longhorns at two
point three eight billion dollars, good for them. They have
them at number one, four hundred million dollars, more than Georgia,
rest of the top five, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Michigan.
(02:18:36):
Now there are sixty eight Power four programs, Jonathan. Where
do you think the University of Cougar's rank on this list?
Bottom ten, sixty eighth. Yeah, okay, that sounds right, right.
They just made Power five nuns longo right. Yeah, I
was honestly shocked to see them that low. It's not
(02:18:57):
even close. They have them at ninety one million. And
since thenat Cincinnati, come on, man, Cincinnati at one oh
six basically, what you're telling me that you have bases
a group of five school and then espensitation. He doesn't understand, which,
by the way, can Longhorn fans who are this is
(02:19:18):
you folks who are all preening over this are the
reason people hate Longhorn fans. This doesn't matter at all.
It's a made up metric and the only thing this
does is put more of a target on the back
and make it easier to say that your program's a
failure if you don't win it all. I'm not celebrating
over this at all. I just to celebrate something I
don't understand. This doesn't put any money in my in
(02:19:40):
my piggy bank. This doesn't stop him from emailing me
for donations. We're sixty eight. I mean it's cool. Texts
is first, but it's better than being sixty eight. I mean,
you're timming back from Italy. Straighten this out. Well, he's
trying to. He's gonna you try to get a trade
deal with Italy, and you have h if you were
playing a game in Florence next year, you never know.
(02:20:02):
Olive oil import business. These straight to you of h
James and Alvin. You've been patiently waiting, and for that
we thank you. At one thirty seven on the Matt
Thomas Show at Ross James, Good afternoon, what's on your mind?
Speaker 10 (02:20:15):
Thank you gentlemen for accepting my call. I had called
initially to uh uh to ask you of all the
Astros farm hands that had UH that they came up
through the Astro system, which one which one of these
(02:20:38):
which one of these young men would you put on
the roster as of today? I'm talking about the current,
the current, all the Astros players they came up through
the system, through the Astro systems. I'm talking about the Yeah. Well,
first let's start with them boards up north and in Toronto.
(02:21:00):
Got five Astros up there and L two they know
all of them and they leading the league up north.
Now you look at Willie Brew uh in Boston, UH
down there with Brigman UH. I just wonder did the
Astros make the right decisions on letting guys go like
(02:21:22):
Kiki Nandez and Tiasco Hernandez, the Hernandez brothers down there
in LA And now we got all this, all these
injuries and we are you just you just said thirty
eight percent of the team is minor league qualified. Did
we make a bad mistake? Who's running that organization over there? Now?
(02:21:46):
With that being said, I wanted to say this. See
y'all juggle people minds with the different topics you bring up. Now,
the WNBA, the Astro. You said about players getting paid,
they're talking about players getting plaid. If we revert that
back to all sports. The Astros offered Jeremy Pinion eight years,
(02:22:13):
one hundred and ten million.
Speaker 1 (02:22:15):
Dollars over eight years.
Speaker 10 (02:22:17):
First off, I thought the Astros didn't do long term contract,
but they offered him eight years, one hundred and ten.
Then he go get Scott Borris.
Speaker 1 (02:22:28):
It was one hundred million, but I don't know if
it was eight years years it was a five years
one oh five.
Speaker 10 (02:22:35):
Well, from my understanding it was eight years, one hundred
and ten.
Speaker 1 (02:22:40):
That's not accurate. Well, I'm just we're wrong, Yeah, I wrong,
You are wrong. That's okay, We're all wrong with things. Okay.
Speaker 10 (02:22:50):
Well I'm not saying I'm perfect in all things, but
I know I'm not. But I'm just saying, is that
Adam hit to say, uh, you offer Jeremy Pinya, uh
that type of money? As in the words of Carlos Correll,
he say that all will come in a little bit low.
(02:23:13):
Wouldn't you think.
Speaker 1 (02:23:16):
I'm just asking? Well, it's different than a free agent
contract because he has years of arbitration left, so that
keeps the annual average annual value down. It's not like
a free agent contract the numbers would be higher. It's different.
Speaker 10 (02:23:30):
Well, the numbers, the numbers speak for itself, his numbers.
Speaker 1 (02:23:34):
Speaking find but every needs context. Numbers are good, but
they always need context. James, and you make less as
you make less under arbitration and team control than you
do as a free agent.
Speaker 10 (02:23:46):
Well, let me ask you. This is called Is he
is Jeremy Pinya gonna be an astro? Is Hannah Brown
gonna be.
Speaker 1 (02:23:51):
He's gonna be an astro? Jeremy Page can be an
astro this year, next year, and the year after, no
matter what. Well, let's get trade. Let's take true yeah
unless of course?
Speaker 10 (02:24:00):
Yeah, Okay, Well thought I thought Kyle Tucker. I thought
Kyle Cooker still would be doing in the astro uniform
Chicago cub.
Speaker 1 (02:24:08):
Yeah, if you listen to James, if you listen to
this show, you would know that we knew that Kyle
Tucker was not going to sign with the Astros after
this season, so they decided to get rid of him
a year before he left and the left the Astros
high and drive. Thank you James with the phone call,
and we always look accept your call. It'll make a
whole lot of sense. Sometimes we always look accept it.
(02:24:28):
Is that the outside pitch guy, I know, but he
always thanks us for accepting this call. That's very polite.
Enough polite people in this world. I'm telling you, I
will always take a polite people. I work with a
rude person twenty hours a week. Jonathan's not that right,
I know, Jonathan. We're trying to get you better. What
just kidding? He's talking about me even though I'm not rude.
I'm nice every day every day, all right, wouldn't mess
(02:24:52):
out here. But you know, we have a little fun.
I have been told that I need to start telling
you more about the believer it or not prizes today?
Oh you do? Yeah, so I'm gonna do it right now.
What do we have?
Speaker 4 (02:25:03):

Speaker 1 (02:25:04):

We honored Chris Paul, who was going back to the
Los Angeles Clippers to play his final NBA season All
(02:26:14):
Things Chris Paul, believe it or not, That's next one
forty four on Sports Talk seven ninety a little bit
of a portal news for you, those of you that
were followers of BYU football program. And they had a
Jewish quarterback last year. Not that we talked about a
religion a lot when it comes to athletics, but it
is an interesting I mean, I think it's the first
(02:26:35):
Jewish quarterback ever to play at BYU. Jke rhetz loof
and Mormon College, yeah, yeah, university whatever. Yeah, I'm sorry,
Latter Day Saints, Latter Day Saints and uh. He got
an eight game suspension for breaking the honor code. And
honor code is no sex. And there were some allegations
involved that have since been dropped. Still got the eight
(02:26:57):
game suspension, and he said, I'm out of here, see it.
And now he will be at Tulane where debauchery is
fully acceptable. Not that what he was doing with debauchery,
but I think they kick you out of school if
you're not having premiary sex, if you're not having sex
with Tulane, then you really are not very attractive or
a nice person, or not trying or not trying. Maybe
(02:27:17):
you're saving yourself. That's which is fine. That's more acceptable BYU.
It is, but I wouldn't have left BYU. If I
was home to save myself, you wouldn't have. I didn't go. Okay,
they hate for Utah Utah b Wyo toys before one
of the nastiest rivalries in sports. I'll take your word
(02:27:39):
for it. And matter of fact, when Erwin Meyer was
the coach of Utah and I was there, he would
not even call them BYU. He called the team down south.
He wouldn't never refer to them by name, like Ohio
State in Michigan, what do they call each other team
from up north and High State? Don't they call the
Michigan then? M? M? What do you call Texas A
and M? Your biggest rival? No, not the biggest rival,
(02:28:02):
biggest ride would be Oklahoma. All right, what do you
call the supposedly biggest rival Oklahoma? What do you call Oklahoma? Anything? M?
They're from Oklahoma. I mean that's oh wow, Choklahoma, Chokeklahoma, Suckklahoma,
Suck Klahoma. Are you just making this out on off
the fly here? Joklahoma? I had a Choklahoma T shirt
(02:28:22):
back in the day. Isn't that that taco that you
have like like an ice cream? And I call it Chocklahoma?
Or's a chock Otaco. You're a choc Otaco. Put that
one back in the oven. I love Chocotaco. Five minutes

(02:29:27):

you sure? You're also supposed to say fewer rather than
the less when it's numbers and nobody cares anymore or
the latter or the former, right, Jonathan, That's true, just
