Speaker 1 (00:01):
Ten oh one in ahe town. Good morning, and welcome
to a Tuesday edition of The Matt Thomas Show with
Ross right here on Sports Talk seven ninety. Good morning
to everybody. Hope you guys had a nice, RESTful Monday.
Not a lot of going on in the world of sports,
but things are kind of bruin in a sport that
(00:22):
has some Houston ties to it. I e a lot
of rocket rumors on the streets in the last twenty
four hours. Okay, it's getting about that time of year,
which we will address. There are two things that I
have become obsessed with in the last I would say
five years of my sports broadcasting career. One is Standing's watch. Yeah,
(00:43):
it's a lot I've been. I've been watching the Astros
American League West Standing since I think the first week
of April. Yeah, we're planning an invention on that. I
guess I should have told you. Yeah, and that feels okay,
because if I'm working out about the team being nine
and four or four and eight, I probably have issues
and that's fine. Yeah, you're gonna get it Outlook, invite
for a team meeting. All hands on deck. Sports Talks
seven nineteen meeting and that's what it will be.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
Yep.
Speaker 1 (01:05):
So, and I've also I am huge into the rumors. Now,
how do I put this politely? I know when I
hear things from the people I hear them from that
I either completely acknowledge them and go, hm, that makes
some sense or that guy doesn't know his head from
(01:28):
his ass.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:30):
So that's different from me, say ten or fifteen years ago,
when I didn't know who to believe in who not
to believe. Because now you're a Rockets insider. Oh well,
I'm not How do I put this? I I I
just hear whispers. I hear whispers. I know a few
people that I didn't know, say ten years ago. Yeah,
so I can sell it for Tito, Well, I mean,
tell him's busy running Italy. So it's true. I don't
(01:52):
know if he's he's taken my calls these days. But
point being isis is that this is the time of
year where you're going to get a lot of rumors.
And the fact of the matter is, I you know,
I don't think the Rockets have necessarily hidden the fact
that they're that they've e this is the build up
and they were a better basketball team, and that word
(02:13):
travels fast and Ema Adoka is a very popular coach
among today's NBA players, And I think it has now
become a destination because of the right decisions that were made,
the young nucleus, the plenty of draft picks that are
still available. M Adoka, you know, turned a team that
lost sixty games two years ago into a fifty two
win team this year in a playoff team, so it
(02:35):
kind of matches, and so yeah, I am very intrigued
by what I hear. Now, again, there could be some
smoke put up there just to kind of to get
people off the scent. But I don't think it's completely
false to believe the Rockets have not kicked the tires
on Kevin Durant. I don't think it's false that the
Rockets have kicked the tires on Johannis than the Goombo.
(02:56):
I don't think it's false that they are having meetings
about what with to do with the number ten draft pick.
I don't think it's false to hear that whether or
not they want to resign Fred van Blee to a
different contract, a little lesser, a bit longer, layer a length,
or pick up the contract. These are not irresponsible people
just pull them off out of their asses to put
something on the Twitter. I think there is some legitimacy
(03:17):
to everything that I've seen so far. Now, again, you're
going to see a bunch of other stuff that's going
to be good for Twitter fodder and whatnot. But for now,
what I'm kind of seeing is kind of consistent of
what I think. The Rockets have never not necessarily been
out there publicly saying, but they're saying, Hey, if there's
something that intrigues us, well listen. And I think right
now is a prime listening season for a team that's
(03:40):
trying to figure out if the current roster is good
enough to take the next step or you need to
make some sort of adjustment to get over the hump.
They've had some time to do that. Yeah, this is
as you said, this is the time to do that.
On the show today, we've got gut fillings at eleven
thirty wonderful, and one of my gut feelings will involve
the Rockets.
Speaker 3 (04:00):
Ooh okay, Now again I've been not given.
Speaker 1 (04:04):
Any inside information while you're winking, because I've got something
that Steyemi, oh you get that checked out. I probably
need to. He's not winking Joe a spot as at
twelve thirty to join us today, love it and we
have a Ross's NFL rewinded one twenty. Can't wait and
believe it or not? Oh, I believe or not.
Speaker 3 (04:20):
Today's got to be Paul Skin who died. No, it'll
be dying.
Speaker 1 (04:22):
Paul Skin's done. No, Paul Skin's okay, he's going to
pitch today. Oh what if I would like for him?
But what's the what's the picture like the least dangerous
injury for a picture to have? Hangnail?
Speaker 4 (04:35):
Now?
Speaker 1 (04:35):
I like him to get a hangnail blister? Yeah, blisters,
that'd be fine. That you used to get blisters all
the time. It can be chronic issues for some picture.
So I'm trying to how about Oh, I got it
paternity leave. Doesn't he have some smoking hot girlfriend? What
is her name?
Speaker 3 (04:49):
Olivia o?
Speaker 1 (04:50):
Livy done? Right? Livy done? Olivia Livy done? And she
was walking the UH Sports Illustrated Swimsuit run down. She's
doing quite well. Mant care where she walks. It's been fine,
don't you know? She'd walk down the straight and be fine.
So I was thinking about this today, and thankfully I
don't think we'll ever be in this situation when it
(05:10):
comes to the Astros. But there are teams, and I'll
just run over a few, and I'm sure I'm going
to miss a couple on the way Pittsburgh Miami. I
don't necessarily believe Colorado is a team like this, but Cincinnati.
There are a handful of Major League franchises that just
(05:30):
don't spend money, that are that are that are there
for a profit. They'd like to win, and if they
happen to win with a young roster in a low payroll,
that's just gravy. But generally speaking, when you need to
go make a trade, there's a few number of teams
on speed dial, and the Pittsburgh Pirates have been on
(05:51):
the speed dial of Major League Baseball teams really since
Barry Bond's left in the early nineteen nineties. Is that
fair to say? Pretty much? Yes? So, Paul Skians is
the most exciting thing that Pittsburgh has had for baseball
in a long period of time. He's a phenom.
Speaker 3 (06:04):
He is as advertised, he is going to be.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
You know, as long as you know arm issues, elbow
issues don't become a part, which unfortunately is a lot
of pitchers unfortunately, it feels like probably will.
Speaker 3 (06:14):
Right some point if it's win.
Speaker 1 (06:16):
Yeah, right, right, So he's the brightest spot and otherwise
a depressing world of being a Pittsburgh Pirate fan. Now,
Pittsburgh is a good sports town. They the Penguins have
done well. The Steelers obviously have this passionate, passionate fan
based with the Pittsburgh Steelers again, probably since Barry left
from Pittsburgh to go to San Francisco has been hot
garbage twenty two and thirty eight. So their season's already done.
(06:39):
Imagine you and I doing sports talk right now in Pittsburgh.
It's probably zero conversation. It's probably it's probably eleven months
a year of the Steelers in a one month of
the Penguins, and maybe a little pitt football basketball, depending
that they're doing well. Imagine if your team that you
loved and you grew up watching, because Pittsburgh's been around
(07:00):
since the fifties, right, I mean you're talking about Clemente
and before that.
Speaker 3 (07:04):
Oh there we are family eighteen hundreds.
Speaker 1 (07:07):
I mean, yeah, I mean they, but I'm talking about
at listen for generation listens are listens to sports radio
or as a sports fan, you can go back to
the fifties and sixties when the Pittsburgh Pirates were a
respectable baseball team. They're an utter embarrassment. So as bad
as you may think it's sometimes it is to be
a fan of your local team. And maybe you're mad
about Jordan's hand and the way the astro is presented
(07:30):
and whatnot, or calling Jim Crane cheap, or or look
at the Pirates, or the minor league system is hot garbage,
or the trades don't work, or this player continues to
do this and that. I'm telling you, imagine being Pittsburgh
for a better part of thirty years. You have this
amazing stadium, beautiful that looks I've never been there before.
(07:52):
I've only been a Pittsburgh a couple times. Like respected
across baseball is one of the best parts. But it's
an underrated city generally speaking. I mean, you wouldn't go
vacation there, but it's certainly not a place you'd go. Oh,
I'm never going to Pittsburgh. I'll take your word for it.
Not on my bucket list.
Speaker 3 (08:04):
It's it's not.
Speaker 1 (08:05):
But I mean, but it's a great sports I love
great sports towns, and obviously the Steelers have this national
fan base, the people that uh have gravitated to them,
and they're they all they have is they keep They
have consistency there win. The stadium's full every week. It
could be twelve degrees below zero and they wouldn't care.
It's just a good sports town. Then you have the
sucky Pirates, and so you're gonna watch the Astros hopefully
(08:28):
go up there and win at least two or three
against a team that just doesn't care about winning. And
it's and I don't know why I'm I'm being so
reflective on Pittsburgh and the Pirates. You're waxing poetic about
the Pirates. But and I am, But it's just two things. One,
they just the Astros can't afford to lose that series.
Oh what must win series? No, No, it's a must
(08:51):
win series. Nope, start of June against the Pirates. Nope.
Speaker 3 (08:56):
Okay, just asking just check it. I'll tell you when
it's must win.
Speaker 1 (09:00):
Good? Is it not right?
Speaker 3 (09:01):
You never have to check with me? I know I'll
check with somebody else not named you.
Speaker 1 (09:06):
But as bad as you might think things are with
your local team, and I'm talking about if you're a
fan of the Rangers. You're a fan of the Dodgers, Giants.
I mean, any team. Just be Pittsburgh for a while
and think about how bad it's been for that city,
in that town. And you've got Paul Schemes, who will
not be a pirate the rest of his career. He won't.
(09:28):
He knows it. Yeah, I mean the Royals gave Bobby
Woit a huge deal. The Royals are hanging around now.
I mean they're still not big spenders, but they've been
able to use their monolague system and they've been competitive,
and they made a couple of signings to convince Bobby, yeah,
we're trying to win, Bobby, come on, good for a
long time. Salvi Perez, Salvador Perez. But in the end
they made it. I can't remember all the signings, but
(09:49):
then they made a couple of signings like here, look,
Bobby Witt, we're trying to win. They want American legue.
Pennanted about what decade ago. But I mean it would
be smart for Pittsburgh to lock him up only for
how good he is, but I mean for how much
impact one player, Like how much more valuable are the
Royals with Bobby Witt than without.
Speaker 3 (10:08):
All the things, just Pittsburgh.
Speaker 1 (10:09):
Ever get on a commercial, ever, get on a sports
center unless it's Paul Schemes. Right, That's that's what I'm saying.
Like today, if you go to sports Center tonight in
about ten fifteen, ten thirty, you'll see astros pirate hilzes
because Schemes will play if it's somebody else in their
pirate rotation, they may not even make the highlight racket
pass exactly. We were talking about this kind of with
basketball earlier this year, how we were running through the
(10:30):
value of NBA franchises. Where were the Warriors? They were
like two or three or something, Right, where is that
value If they don't have Steph Curry, it's probably middle
back to middle of the pack or something. So yeah,
to make that analogy, it would be a good marketing
investment for them to pay a bunch of money to
Paul Schemes. So the problem is that they they care,
they just don't have any intention of putting a surrounding
(10:52):
cast around him. So all right, so today we've got Joe,
a spotter from Pittsburgh. At twelve thirty, we mentioned a
rewind NBA trade rumors. The Texans are back on the
O T A Fields. Will we see CJ. Stroud throw
a football today? Hopefully he's got the shoulder muscle issue.
Older update all right, and again it took Aaron Wilson
(11:13):
and tell us yeah, which is weird. Why can't Demik
Okay say yeah, he's dealing with something, it's nothing to
worry about. We have zero concern and he'll be throwing sooner,
rather than you're smart people, which I believe you and
I are. I'm not not brilliant. I'm smart. You're more
brilliant than I am. And that's fine. Yeah, can you
clip that? Yeah, but I'm more successful. So the true
(11:35):
bottom line is this. If he says that, decent minded
people will go, yeah, you don't. What if he's not
feeling great, shut that bad boy down? Okay, moving on instead,
you've got this he's on he's on a throwing program. Well,
the throwing program, clearly, Demiko is that he's not he's
not going to throw. So he again, maybe maybe there's
(11:56):
something in the water in our town that our that
our teams just don't want to be overly forthcoming. And
that's why I said yesterday we were talking a lot
about the Yordan situation, and it is the asteroids. It's
a lot of sports teams that just can't be transparent,
and maybe we need a transparent sports world.
Speaker 3 (12:12):
We're never gonna get. These teams seem to disagree.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
They're like, you cover us because your audience wants it,
and we're going to tell you what we want to
tell you when we want to tell you. And the
NBA gives you like full medical terms. They they do
their injury report six times a day. When I wake
up in the morning, I can see the injury report
from teams that have not now the night before. If
you play, you don't get you don't have to do it.
(12:35):
But if you have a two days ago you I
wake up some thirty o'clock in the morning and I
can see the injury report. Now they constantly updated throughout
the course of the day. That's cool. Football. The NFL
does it every single day, starting on what Wednesday, they
do the injury report. But that's only in season, non season,
out of season, and we don't have to tell you
what we want to tell you. And baseball doesn't haven't
have policy at all, so baseball is so they're like
(12:58):
acting like they're the CIA and as I the Astros.
As I said yesterday, I'm really over the yord On
stuff because it's been kind of exhaustively talked about. I
just don't believe the Astros anymore. And that and unfortunately
it's you know, your fault, it's not my fault. I
still love them. They're my team. I want to talk
about them. I want them to be successful. But when
(13:19):
they tell me about injuries, I just go, uh huh.
It's like when someone lies to you I didn't ever
drink today. You know, your breast smells like you've had booze.
I mean, you know what I'm saying, or over it.
And when somebody says, my dog get my homework, it's
a peppermint, it wasn't. Gold Schluger I swear ten fourteen
on Sports Talk seven ninety seven one three two one
two five seven ninety If you want to jump in
(13:41):
gut feelings today at eleven thirty, NBA rumors are out there,
I've got two gut feelings already locked and loaded for
a segment today. One involves one of your favorite players,
and one involves the Houston Rockets. Okay seven one three
two one two five seven nintis time is ten twenty.
We are uh the Matt Thomas shold Ross on Sports
(14:02):
Talk seven ninety seven to one three two one two
five seven ninety's how you reach the show seven to
one three two one two five seven nine zero on Twitter,
at sports empty, at Sports RB, and of course our
station address is at Sports Talk SEMONNTY. Today we have
some tickets to give away, and not for a particular game,
but if you'd like to go see the Space Cowboys,
(14:23):
we'll be giving those away in the eleven o'clock hour
of the show today. They're basic the vouchers to go
uh to a game of your choice. Amazing, so we'll
be giving I think it's gonna have those I have
seven none to a game.
Speaker 3 (14:36):
I mean no, I know they're for the audience.
Speaker 1 (14:40):
That's fine. So we'll be giving away one of those
coming up today, uh in the eleven o'clock hour on
the radio program. In fact, it is a four pack
of tickets uh to a Space Cowboys game of your choice,
thanks to our friends over at Talier Brewing, which of
course I speak for, and they're over there on Imperial Bolivar,
which is literally a stone throw away from console field.
(15:01):
Great couple of bruis in a ball game. Oh absolutely,
So we'll give away that four pack in the eleven
o'clock hour. All right, So we got baseball today. The
Astros and Pirates will play. The Mariners were off yesterday
so there was nothing on that. So the Astros still
find themselves a half game in the first place. Cal
Rally didn't hit a home run yesterday, So that's good
(15:22):
cal Raley and he's has he become public and I
mean never won for US Astro fans against the Mariners.
You know, he had four home He had four hits
in the series against the Minnesota twenty three game series,
four hits. They were all home runs. That's pretty good.
I mean, he's been a thirty home run guy, but
he is what twenty three. Yes, he's trying to hit
(15:45):
sixty and I ain't like, well they play is a
piece of cake. I mean, it's a mid sized ball bar.
It's a little band box. Yeah. I don't know what's
going on with him, but I'd like it when hopefully
he'll slow down and the Mariners will do. You think
that stat and a lot of broadcasters use it that
that ball would have only been out of this many ballparks.
(16:07):
Oh no, what do you mean? Oh what are you
gonna say? You don't like it?
Speaker 3 (16:13):
I mean, it's not a question like it. It's almost
like it doesn't matter.
Speaker 1 (16:16):
It's what I thought because I'm only playing in the
ballpark I'm in today, and if I hit a ball
out of that Ballyard, then that's my home run and
I'm happy. Yeah, it's just a piece of information, just
a piece of data. Normally you can figure it out,
especially when it's the Crawford box, when it's the it's
hitting the top of the wall in the Crawford boxes
like Jeremy Panea does or did, and you're like, oh, yeah,
(16:39):
that's only gonna be I've always looked, but I always
look at I have a baseball savant's page up when
I'm watching the games. But you're not a baseball savant.
You just have the page up right, Okay, it's what
a page is called, Matt. I wouldn't call myself a
baseball savant at all. All right, that's good, No, I
it is. It's almost like I can guess, now, yeah,
(17:00):
that's the game you have to play. How many ballparks
would that have been out? Of yeah, well, anyone to
anything to left at dyke In Park. You you wonder
m automatically and some it's like I wonder how many
home runs of jose Al Tuvays in his career have
been to the Crawford boxes, and then that have gone
to the Crawford boxes, how many haven't gone less than
five rows? And I told you this before. I think
(17:24):
I was there and I don't remember who it was.
I think it was against It was the Podres. I
saw a broken bat home run into the boxes. This
hadn't been about what Maybe that sounds vaguely familiar. You
could look it up. I know we have done We've
done it once before. But I mean I had to
been within the first two or three years that I
watched the Astros, because it was I think it was
(17:45):
before I left town. So I want to say it
with San Diego and I want to say it was
a broken bat. I want to almost say it was
a grand slam o wow. And the moment it happened,
I was in the press by and I thought to myself,
this is how cheap it is to hit a home run.
At that time, minute made Park or maybe it was
even called en run. I don't know what it's called.
(18:05):
That point point ping is that it's you know, the
stats are somewhat cool, but do we I mean, when
when you announced a player has four hundred and eighty
four home runs, they don't break it down by well,
only two hundred and nineteen have been out of there
if you played at certain ballpark. And to your point though,
it's more just about context, about yeah, you know, would
(18:27):
that have been actually feel better? Like when Hunter Brown's
getting lit up in Tampa Bay, You're like, it's only
out in Tampa Bay. In New York, that's right, Or
if that ball was hit at this ballpark, it have
been gone, but instead they're playing here, Like for instance,
it's harder to hit a home run in Detroit than
it is to hit one at Yankee Stadium or Fenway Park. Yeah,
or or the Astros. Their center field is one of
(18:48):
the hardest to hit a home one goes. If you
get one out in center, you earned it. At dyke
In Park, it's almost long. You can take a slower trot,
like if you hit like a if you hit a
bam Box home run at minut it made to the
Crawford boxes, you just sprint around the back of the
dug out. It's almost like you shouldn't even run all
four bases. You should, but just raise your hands out.
Got it. But if you hit a monster shot, like
(19:09):
if you go upper tank in the right field, you know,
take that gallop around the four bases, I think I
found it. Go ahead, Padres Astros, Damien Jackson. That sounds
about right. Yeah, what year?
Speaker 3 (19:23):
Broken back grand Slam? Look at you?
Speaker 1 (19:25):
You are the baseball savant. Uh yeah, Bruce Bochie quote.
I was shocked. I didn't know he had that kind
of power, but he hit it the right spot and
down the line. Uh huh? What day was it? When?
When was that? July fifteenth, two thousand and one, So
it was the second season, mm hmm. We didn't even
have the Texans then, isn't that crazy? No, it was
(19:47):
all Astros.
Speaker 3 (19:49):
How do we do it? You know, aren't even in
the business.
Speaker 1 (19:51):
I don't know. How did we do it? You know
we did? We tucked kill Cowboys? Oh yeah, around that time.
I mean I became a Cowboys fan. You did what?
Speaker 3 (20:02):
I didn't hear you? Are you stuttering over there?
Speaker 1 (20:06):
I became't? I mean they were on every week and
there were No you're a fan of Quincy Carter exactly,
That's what I'm saying. At least, don't call me a
bandwagon hopper. It was Chad Hutchinson and Quincy Carter season.
It's not good. It was a Dave Campbell, their coach
at the time, I think, so, yes, yike, So don't
say I got on the bandwagon. There was nothing else on.
(20:27):
And I rooted it for the Titans as well, because
I like Steve McNair, you know, the Boys, Frank Whitchek, Eddie,
George et cetera, Derek Mason. So I rooted it for
the Titans, and then I rooted it a little for
the Cowboy They were on every week, and I watched
football every week. So I was a young, impressionable sixteen
seventeen year old and I became a bit of a
Cowboys fan. And then the Texans came in two thousand
(20:49):
and two, and you waited basically twenty years, and then
by then, yeah, I was already going to UT and
I was just a UT football fan.
Speaker 3 (20:55):
That was my football team. Yeah all the way.
Speaker 1 (20:57):
Congratulations to UT going to the College Softball World Series. Yes,
and they don't have to face O you no, because
Texas Tech knocked him out yesterday.
Speaker 3 (21:06):
Shout out Red Raiders.
Speaker 1 (21:08):
Thank god? Was it five straight national championships to the
Oklahoma something like that. Yeah. Now the ticket sales are
way down. I'm sure for the final, although Texas Tech Texas,
they should still sell some.
Speaker 3 (21:19):
Oh I'm I'm bad. It's gonna be full.
Speaker 1 (21:20):
Yeah. Yeah, I got my flight later today, so I'll
be going in the game. Game one is tomorrow. I'll
be with you from wherever it is Oklahoma Place, say
it a lot and proud? Where is it from Oklahoma City?
That is correct named the stadium? Uh, it's Jefferson. It's
not Jepson. Not to be confused with the one here,
(21:41):
which is no longer in existence. Yeah, it hasn't been
existence since today. It's actually that guy's cousin. Okay, As
far as you didn't saydumbar field House, did c J
throw today at OTA's The answer is next.
Speaker 3 (21:57):
On Sports Talk seven ninety, Jonathan get.
Speaker 1 (22:02):
Rid of this song immediately. It has been playing on
the show way too many times. There you go, smart,
Gonna keep Jonathan Aron a little bit long time? Come on,
what's wrong with the lightning and the thunder. It's it's
the worst song ever made. It gets the people going, No,
it doesn't. I would say Paul McCartney's Wonderful Christmas Time
is the worst song. Mm hmm. Would you like to know?
(22:27):
And honestly, before we get to the Texans, the worst
song of all time? I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas.
It is a song called Loving You by Minnie Ripperton. Wait,
that's a great song. I it's easy because you're beautiful.
I despise that song, dude and dude, and it's great.
(22:48):
You're see you came. You can't even believe your own
horrific rhetoric over there. It's not bad, No, but you
got to get its Mini Ripperton it is. Can you
pull this up? I want to. It is the worst song. Seriously,
you listen to this for ten songs you want to
stab yourself in the eyes. Oh no, here, let's see,
all right, there we go. I got it for you, Jonathan.
(23:10):
This is the worst song ever made in the history
of music. Here comes just for a few seconds. Oh,
put it nice. I listened to relaxing start and then
her voice comes on. A wonderful love song of the seventies,
(23:38):
The trees are swaying.
Speaker 3 (23:39):
We talk, We talked.
Speaker 1 (23:40):
Some sports people come to this show for words are chirping. Okay, yeah,
it's great. Oh it's just too high pitch for you.
It's just sucks. Okay. Well, I listened to seventies on
seventy coming home from work. This song comes on and
I cannot flip it fast enough. Now is that many
(24:01):
represented in general? Does she have other hits? I think
she's a one hit wonder. But you know what I
think you feel about that? The way I feel about
Michael McDonald. I just can't explain it. I don't know why,
because Michael McDonald's got like twenty hits. Though, you're you're
taking an L on that. No, I understand, I'm not
taking I'm not trying to take an L. I'm just
telling you it's just for whatever reason. If you love
Michael McDonald, and I love Michael McDonald's four, it just
(24:23):
sounds like a bit fair. It sounds like he's doing
a sketch on SNL when he sings that's all. Okay,
you know what I'm saying. That's what you know. I
can't explain it. You can't you like it. It's fine
for instance, my family devours salmon. I think it's disgusting
and I can't explain it. I just don't like it.
I understand, but I'm the only one in the there's
(24:44):
five of us, and four of the five we eat salmon,
little lemon, pepper on, it's butter. Well. Well, they went
to Roscoe and got the big six pieces of it,
and they're like, this is amazing. Six pieces of salmon.
Oh okay, this is not like a big file at well,
it was kind up in a six yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
I'll take it.
Speaker 5 (25:03):
I don't know.
Speaker 1 (25:03):
I don't go to Moscow. Did you get five Guyland
gallons of Mannies while you were there?
Speaker 2 (25:08):
Too?
Speaker 3 (25:09):
I got one hundred and forty pack of Squirt zero sugar?
Speaker 1 (25:14):
Wow? Zero sugar? So you got a big pack of
Squirt zero sugar. Okay, I don't like. I have not
had a sugary soda in probably ten years. That's not true.
Speaker 3 (25:28):
Well, oh so you gave me a real scot Day
and I see I didn't know.
Speaker 1 (25:31):
Oh you did.
Speaker 3 (25:32):
That's right, that's an order to taste.
Speaker 1 (25:33):
Yeah, we were at Gllary Furniture and I gave you
a squirt all right, Okay, Okay, I supply wanted to
surprise you, your squirt.
Speaker 3 (25:52):
That surprised me, that's for sure.
Speaker 1 (25:55):
All right. Excuse c J. Stroud today? Did he throw?
The answer is no, he did not throw. Aaron Wilson
reporting no throws for c J. Stroud, just handoffs due
to minor shoulder muscle tightness, per league sources. Now let
me ask you this. When Aaron says per league sources,
(26:17):
what did he called something in Seattle? And get the
information on this? I think he talks. He seems to
me like he talks to agents, for sure. Yeah, when
you see the term league sources, that's agents. Got kind
of going in the weeds a little bit there, But
that's fine. I mean, he's got to protect what he's
got to protect. He says, held out his precautionary measure.
No concern from the team. And let me ask you this, Ross,
(26:40):
If there was concern from the team, what do we
hear about it?
Speaker 5 (26:42):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (26:42):
Hell no, I don't think so. But apparently yeah, CJ.
Strouds seen just doing handoffs again today. And Nick Kayley, Yeah,
I told you that not Nick Hayley. Nick Kyley right,
says he's not worried. Well, I mean, I'm sure when
Dimiko speaks letter today, he won't be worried either. Nobody's
(27:03):
gonna be worried. That's good. And my guess is you
know that is the thing that hurts is that I
told you if I don't believe the Astros, am I
supposed to believe the Texans.
Speaker 3 (27:14):
Do they get the benefit of doubt? I guess they do.
Speaker 1 (27:16):
They haven't done anything that's been out of the ordinary
in terms of not being over I'm taking it all
with a grain of salt, and it's probably it's because
of the Astros. I mean, it just is. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (27:26):
See, that's what they've done.
Speaker 1 (27:27):
My beloved baseball team is it overly forthcoming and truthful
about injuries. So now I'm putting every sports team in
the same category. Yeah, I'm having nightmares that we're gonna
hear laboral tear or something crazy.
Speaker 3 (27:40):
But hopefully he's okay. Well, shoulder muscle string.
Speaker 1 (27:45):
And obviously that shoulder strain does not affect him shooting
basketballs and it doesn't affect him handing off the ball. No,
that's good. I mean he needs a hand it up
about thirty times a game anyway. In all seriousness, I
really am not concerned, not that I have seen an
MRI or seen an X ray, but if there was
some serious issues, he wouldn't even putting a uniform on.
I think you're right, but in all seriousness, I am
(28:07):
slightly concerned. And again I will say, it's just because
of the astros, so we'll see what happens. Yep, yep.
But yeah. My philosophy is is that I'm not going
to worry until I think mini camp would be if
he doesn't throw anymore this week, then they have what
(28:27):
mini camp a few weeks from now. That'd be with
the end of June. That'd be a bot of Probably
my guess is about a month since he's throwing a football.
I would think then the warning flags will be put
up and then then we'd spend the next month saying, oh,
first day of practice of a real training camp, will
he be throwing a football?
Speaker 4 (28:45):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (28:45):
Thank god. It's not a baseball situation where it's like, well,
he's got to build up. He's in spring training mode.
He's gonna go ahead and do a three weeks with
the Roughnecks minor league rehab. He's gonna come up, yeah,
ready to go.
Speaker 3 (28:57):
As I said, before.
Speaker 1 (28:58):
When it comes to the CJ situation, I'm surprised Franklin
that more teams don't have their guys throwing at aldering OTAs.
I mean, I wouldn't. I mean, if if all they
are all the number of times that he throws a
football in. I mean think about they practice four and
a half days a week. You play on Sunday. I
(29:20):
mean you just and that doesn't even count the time
that you're actually in practice. I mean you're just hanging
out with your boys and let's say, hey, the receivers,
let's go run some extra routes after practice. That's additional throws.
I mean that you do have you have pitch counts. Yeah,
so why is it different? Because it's over to the shoulder,
it's more natural, you're not torquing your elbow. Yeah, but
still it's still the motion unless you're you know, sight
(29:41):
arming everything like patoes for sure. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (29:45):
Yeah, I'd have to talk to a doctor about that.
Speaker 1 (29:47):
But I've never heard have you heard of a I mean,
Brett fav was like forty years old and that dude
still was slinging it. But I think he is.
Speaker 3 (29:55):
The outlier on that.
Speaker 1 (29:56):
Yeah, I think he was almost built from a from
a Greek guy. I mean just I think the guys
with with that type of type of power. I mean
Peyton Manning, but he had multiple surgeries and injuries, right,
I mean he had a podcat by the end of
his career. I'm just trying to think he was throwing
underhanded towards the end. I think, yeah, that that was
with Granny style. I thought was bizarre. He was actually
thrown with his lucktand for a while, which was really peculiar. No, Uh,
(30:21):
I would I would treat if I had a team
running a team, I would treat my quarterback with just
go out there, wave a few, uh, throw a couple
of passes to say hello to everybody, and then turn
around and say I'm good for the day. I would.
I would really want to make sure that his arm
was as fresh as it possibly could be for the time.
That really is important. And training camp in his reporting,
I think probably the mini camps. The mini camps will
(30:43):
be an up ramp up of what they're doing right now.
Right now, they're just going through a couple of handful
of drills. They'll probably implement some system type things at
Minnichampbell Air on this month. He's got to build chemistry
with the receivers, Matt. He has got to build with
the young receivers. He's got some new ones, that's for sure.
But yeah, uh, now here's the question. Will Demko be
(31:06):
forthcoming today and say, yeah, it is a little bit
of a shoulder muscle soreness, as Aaron's reported, or do
you think then he will go It's just I mean,
that's where Dimiko might lose some points, and he says
it was not his day to throw, okay, because I
think the cat's out of the back right in theory. Yes, yeah,
all right. Seven one three two one two five seven ninety.
(31:26):
If you want to join the radio show today seven
one three two one two five seven nine zero, We've
got got Feelings at eleven thirty, the News at noon,
Joe Spots at twelve thirty, Today NFL rewind at one twenty,
and again we'll try to catch up a little things
that Dimico had to say when he speaks to the media.
Coming up in about a half an hour from now.
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety. Rocket
(31:49):
rumors to be discussed after I tell you about Berkeley
E Center. Matt Ross with you here on Tuesday. Seven
one three two one two five seven nine. If you'd
like to come say hello something on your mind conversation piece.
You want agree or disagree with something we said earlier,
You're more than welcome to do that. Seven one three
(32:10):
two one two five seven nine zero at sports Empty,
at Sports RV, both on Twitter and Instagram. My Instagram
is fantastic, Rosses, It's a work in progress. Seven one
three two one two five seven nine zero. What's so
fantastic about your Instagram? Great?
Speaker 3 (32:26):
Give me five fantastic things about it?
Speaker 1 (32:28):
Uh pictures, music, no friendly face, loud, good buildings.
Speaker 3 (32:36):
Uh buildings, Yeah, like arenas and stuff like that.
Speaker 1 (32:38):
Place I go, yeah, let me pull this up and
do whatever you want.
Speaker 3 (32:45):
Let's see it's a picture of your col history.
Speaker 1 (32:48):
That was funny. People like that. And then yeah, it's
a bunch of pictures of NBA arena, the scoreboards with
rockets winning can and this is you're hoaring a sponsor
in this one. It's all right follow sports RV. Yeah,
(33:13):
just like most of Houston is all right. We're trying
to build. It's a slow build. So Kelly Eco, I
go Eco. I always get a butcher Eco because he
had a podcast called the Ecosystem. So okay, So he's
a writer for the Athletic and follows uh none of
the Rockets, but a lot of the teams in the
Southwest Division, Uh huh. And he says things are starting
(33:36):
to heat up a little bit when it comes to
a variety of things. One trying to keep Steven Adams here.
And if Steven Adams is not a guy that want
that will want to say in Houston, will want to
go for another contract perhaps somewhere else, that brook Lopez
could be a guy they're going after. The brook is
not nearly as a physical player down low. In fact,
(33:58):
Brooke would rather shoot three pointers, shoot then put his
back to the basket and go for offensive rebounds.
Speaker 3 (34:04):
He's also six years older too.
Speaker 1 (34:06):
Yeah, he's passed his prime and they were trying to
get him Recentlyn't they tried to trade a long time
ago when they went they were going for brook Lopez
and they signed somebody else in instead. I thought even
recently they re engaged. There was like trade rumors with
brook Lopez or something or no he no, he re
signed with them, but I think if he didn't sign
back with the Bucks this last time, it would have
been the Rocket rockets, right, and I think they would
(34:28):
have been probably no Villain Brooks.
Speaker 3 (34:30):
Yeah, okay, so that's number one. Number two.
Speaker 1 (34:33):
There are some teams that are showing some interest in
Cam Whitmore, and that kind of makes sense. You get that,
you get number one, ready for that, the response get
good and then the most interesting thing, the most interesting
thing ross is that the Kevin Durant conversations continue and
(34:55):
that Kevin Durant, Uh, the asking price maybe starting to
drop a little bit, so the market is cooling. Well,
he's what he's thirty seven, right, thirty six or thirty seven?
Speaker 3 (35:11):
Yeah, he's old.
Speaker 1 (35:13):
I think I think by the in the middle of
the next season he'll be he might if he's not
thirty seven already. Yeah, he's thirty six now, but he
turns thirty seven September twenty ninth, so for the season
he'll be thirty seven. He's still a guy that is
a very efficient score. His defense is not where it
used to be. To me, he still turns the ball
(35:34):
over way too much. And you know, when you're thirty six,
thirty seven, thirty eight, you may be in a spot
where you're gonna be the lingering. Injuries may become longer
injuries he'll time. It's gonna be much more more lengthier
than it would be if he would say hurt with
an alman and if he was twenty five or twenty six,
he's arguably he's I mean, he's still a top five
(35:57):
ISO scoring basketball player. But that's basically what he does.
He's great at it, So I don't want to call
him like a one trick pony in that sense, because
he's fantastic. And then the point of basketball is to
put the ball into the hoop, and he's great at it,
but it's it doesn't provide a lot for you elsewhere.
But in times when the Rockets struggled and it was
(36:19):
two minutes left in a game and they needed somebody
to be that alpha dog, take the game over, put
the ball into the hoop. Kevin Durant fits that role.
But what about the other forty six minutes of the game.
That's that's what you have to weigh if you're the Rockets.
So my question is, can you go get Kevin Durant
without giving up Jalen Green and or Oprin.
Speaker 3 (36:38):
Shankuhn Dollar.
Speaker 1 (36:43):
Right, maybe I would say maybe yes, certainly not Joannis,
you're gonna have to give up one of those. If not,
they're going to demand both. But I could see a
pluthor of draft picks headed to Phoenix's away because they've
said they've not hidden the fact they would like to
keep some Phoenix Sun player or some draft picks. And
but also trains have to make meant sense dollar wise too,
(37:03):
And you would add a better shot if you'd moved
in the top four and the lottery.
Speaker 3 (37:06):
But you move, you moved back. Yeah, all right?
Speaker 1 (37:09):
Seven one three, two, one two five, seven ninety. Let's
talk to Chad online one at ten fifty five. Chad,
thanks for holding. Good morning, Chad.
Speaker 6 (37:21):
It's not they're going to demand both.
Speaker 1 (37:22):
But hello, Chad, Yad, Chad, can.
Speaker 5 (37:28):
You hear me? Yeah? Go ahead, all right, guys, I
got a question with the pitching struggles of the ass
his arms falling off, maybe never retatching, Trevor Bauers, thirty
four years old, will sign for leak. We're all right,
why not sign him? Why not take a flyer on
the guys.
Speaker 1 (37:49):
There are thirty times in Major League Baseball, none of
them have called about the services of Trevor Bauer. For
a reason. The reason is he's just a bad guy.
His spin rates dipped significantly when Spidertack was cracked down
upon he was under investigation. In twenty twenty one, a
separate woman in Ohio saw a temporary order of protection.
(38:11):
In twenty twenty a third woman accused Bauer of sexual
assault in twenty twenty two and twenty twenty three. There
are thirty teams that can get his services, and all
have declined to do so so far.
Speaker 3 (38:25):
He crushed the Astros when he was in the big leagues.
Speaker 1 (38:28):
He has got a terrible reputation for being a bad teammate.
He goes in that astro's clubhouse who be hated immediately.
Speaker 3 (38:36):
No one will like him, no one respects him.
Speaker 1 (38:38):
You have to have a good clubhouse culture for every
single day of the baseball season.
Speaker 3 (38:44):
Trevor Bauer does not bring it. Trevor Bauer will not
be in.
Speaker 1 (38:47):
The Astros clubhouse. Yes, my name is Ros Virial and
Trevor Bauer will never be a Houston Astro. My name
is Matt Thomas, and what Ross said, I say as well,
Trevor Bauer never an Astro. Thank you. Second Hour The
Matt Thomas Show. Starts with Ross Love and oh one
(39:08):
on Sports Talk seven Outy. We're a half hour away
from Gut Feelings this hour giving away a four pack
of tickets to a future Space Cowboys game. You'd like
to go that, we'll do that coming up in about
Uh well, maybe during Gut Feelings. What do you think?
Speaker 3 (39:22):
Okay, so we'll happen like it.
Speaker 1 (39:25):
We'll have that the news at noon Joe Spot at
twelve thirty from Pittsburgh. Great, and we'll see if we
get another Trevor Bower PSA that we recorded last year?
Was it last year?
Speaker 5 (39:36):
No?
Speaker 1 (39:37):
Two years? No, it was last year last year. How
often are we playing that? About once a month recently? Yes,
it's pop back up. I think because of the Astros
and all their pitching injuries. I mean, if Trevor Bower's
forty three years old, will people then finally give up
on the notion of me He's never gonna mean again.
I know the Astros have serious pitching issues, but so
(39:58):
do about a. My guess this is nine or ten
other teams I'm serious pitching at you. He has not
pitched in major leagues since twenty twenty one, and thirty
out of thirty teams have not tendered his services. That
should tell you something. Not because let me tell you something.
If somebody calls on him, they're going to spread the word.
(40:21):
Whether it's the agent, whether it's the player, whether it's
the team, has to answer the question. Nobody wants them guys,
he said, just a bad human being. Major League Baseball did?
Was it a two year suspension they gave him.
Speaker 3 (40:34):
That I can't confirm. I can't remember.
Speaker 1 (40:38):
Major League Baseball did their own independence investigation and then
they suspended him for I think it was maybe two years.
You don't we need to do it. We have to
have a heart to heart right here, and I didn't
think at eleven zero two you'd have to have a
heart to heart meeting about anything. It's suspended for two
hundred and thirty four games so year and a half.
There are a list of topics in sports for us
(41:01):
as a radio host that we've banished for the most part.
Now once in a while they sneak in. Let me
give you the list. Can I get some list music? Please?
List music that just something just to kind of add
something like Harry maybe something summary, just something of the instrumentals.
We don't want me having to fight with the lyrics,
(41:23):
but just something to kind of give you. We're talking
about the genesis of what this this list is of topics.
This is fantastic. Hey, Matt, how's it going? This is good.
I was gonna get the Mini Ripper ten, but we
let you. No, we don't want lyrics. Okay, all right,
(41:44):
we want to go back and forth with this. Okay.
I don't even know exactly what ballpark you're going into,
but these are lists of topics that we do not discuss,
generally speaking any more on sports radio because they have
been exhausted way too many times. I'll start with, is
Matt shopping the league quarterback? Okay?
Speaker 4 (42:05):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (42:05):
Should the Texans draft Vince Young or Reggie Bush? Then
they didn't either. Should Pete Rose be put into Baseball's
Hall of Fame? Apparently that one's just got resurrected, even
though he just died. Yeah, but we've put that away
for a while. Oh, I got what the uh? Just
(42:27):
the astros cheating scandal in general? Okay, should the NHL
come to Houston? Oh my god, we haven't retired that one.
You're supposed to be saying ones we're done with. Well,
we've been talking about for twenty straight years. Harry Batman's
kind of told us to kind of take a back
seat on that commission with the NHL. Uh, Alex Bricks
(42:48):
Should the Astros re sign Alex Bregman? That drug out forever?
I've drugged out for like two years. Carlos Korea, pay
the man conversation, Kyle Tucker, pay the man conversation. A
lot of this ties back the Astros not signing their
star players.
Speaker 3 (43:03):
Garrett Cole was never really a conversation. I guess, oh oh.
Speaker 1 (43:07):
Was Garrett Cole being disrespectful by putting the Scott Boris
head on and getting my God? Actually, I like that one, Steve.
We're gonna keep that on the list. No, that one
still makes me angry. I love that one. He wore
the hat to the ballpark, was disrespectful to the great
city Houston, all your love. He never wanted to stay
my God, for Pete's sake, I'm a free agent. Do
(43:31):
I have to speak? So I am, by the way,
declaring at eleven o five on June the third of
twenty twenty five. Okay, just like we had with the
previous caller in the late portions of the ten o'clock hour,
if you bring up Trevor Bauer Ross and I will
not give you a live answer.
Speaker 3 (43:52):
We give you the recorded one. We give you one.
Speaker 1 (43:54):
Recently, we've had to use it two times in the
last thirty days, and we'll continue to do that until
we've until every single person in this Houston area realizes
Trevor Bauer will never become a member of the Houston Astro.
That scumbag will not be back in baseball and he
will never be a Houston Astro. I mean, it's kind
(44:16):
of fascinating that it continues to pop up. I don't know,
maybe it's the troll job. I don't think that guy
was troubling. No, I think he was being legit. And
that's okay. I mean, I understand he had a broken
phone or something, but well it's probably our phones, our systems. Still,
that was him. That's true. Now, if you wanted to say,
let's make a trade to go get an arm I'm
(44:39):
all for that now. I don't know what players would
be on the on the radar for the Astros. Again,
Dana Brown, it feels like to me has really gone
to that monor league system a lot, and he probably
pains him to do so because one of the things
he was brought into to do was to replenish a
monor league system, and right now that monor legue system
isn't really replenished.
Speaker 3 (44:59):
Yeah, and it's not his fault either. I mean, it's
you got all these injuries.
Speaker 1 (45:02):
You've had to trade away guy you've had Marland or
trade Trayland, although both of those guys apparently aren't aren't
doing much. Was it Clifford? And uh, who is the
other one, Gilbert? Neither one, right, Neither one are doing
much of anything. Nobody in the in the Kakuchie trades
is doing much of anything. So in a way, it's
kind of a blessing. You've got the help at the
major league level that you needed to go all in
(45:23):
in twenty three and twenty four, even though it didn't
result in a World Series championship. I still liked both
of those moves at the time because you got to
give something to get. But yeah, and you've had to
call up you know, Ryan Gusto, not one of the
top prospects in baseball, and you're struggling a little Bitton
on the radar. No, I don't know what's going on.
(45:44):
Blue ball. I don't know what's going on with Uh,
what's that guy's name, Miguel Uyola. So you're going way
inside baseball for me. Miguel Joila has been been bawling. Well,
there's a difference in balling at Triple A, there is,
and playing in Reno and in Las Vegas. Oh, never mind?
(46:06):
Is the aras up to three fifty five Triple A?
Speaker 3 (46:09):
That's not terrible? Youre kidding me? For all the band
boxes they playing?
Speaker 1 (46:11):
Yeah, well, yeah, okay, Well, if it's three fifty five
in Triple A, what's it gonna be in the major leagues? No,
I'm gonna fifty five. No, I'm actually encourage if it's
three fifty five in them and Triple A where there's
a lot of you play in Colorado Springs and all
those ballparks. So well, Forrest Whitley's ra A and Triple
A was like under two abbucracky. What under under two
(46:32):
in Triple A? Hows for major league? I'm just asking you.
So yeah, Uh, the Trevor Bauer thing is cute, but
it's never going to happen. Oh A good one from
uh Tom in downtown at what to do with the astronom.
Oh my god. That has long been erased in my memories.
(46:52):
It came back recently when that pie of that that
coalition or whatever made their plan that nobody founds that
was that hag had all the extra money that her
husband said, here's a couple million dollars. Are you just
calling her a hag with extra money? That's rude, Okay,
that delightful woman who her husband gave her a bunch
of money to go start something, to just waste our
(47:14):
time hobby. It literally was, It's like, yeah, let's get
her out of my hair. Let's say yeah, astrondom commission.
Go ahead, honey, here's three MILLI yeah, no, talk to
me in six months. It was like in the movie
Dirty Dancing when the guys wants to pit poker and
he says, hey and go get that guy. I'd give
him some private dance lessons and Patrick Swayze's character whys
I'm sleeping with her? That was a Dan Matthews move
(47:37):
right there. I apologize that was awful. Yeah, you should apologize.
I just had to refer to that woman getting three
million dollars for an astronom project and referencing the guy
that played want to play poker all night and gave
his wife money so he could sleep with Patrick. Decent proposal. No,
that was in Uh it was dirty dancing. Oh, dirty dancing.
And I never saw it. I know, really, I know
(48:00):
it's a blind spot for me. Is it Is it
a must watch? Absolutely? Absolutely? And it holds up because
it's not a movie about current day, it's about going back.
It's like a period piece. Yes, you haven't seen Dirty Dancing,
not all the way through?
Speaker 6 (48:18):
Wow?
Speaker 1 (48:21):
Oh stop, I don't want to hear. I'm not ashamed
of you. I mean, I'm not even really disappointed. I'm
just saying that it's a it's a fantastic movie. I know.
I'm not even a fan. I mean that was Jennifer
Gray before her nose jaw. Oh, I really like Jennifer Gray.
Wasn't she an Adventures in Babysitting? Yes? No, and Ferris
Bueller was a shoe was Adventures and Babysit Elizabeth Farris
(48:42):
Bueller is with Jennifer Gray. Yeah, she was the sister.
By way, I'm still writing my screenplay for Ferris Bueller
Soun's Day.
Speaker 3 (48:49):
It's gonna be so good.
Speaker 1 (48:51):
We're gonna have it it's at Paramount Studios right now
as we speak, and they're gonna buy the scorp.
Speaker 3 (48:56):
I heard they're filing a restraining order.
Speaker 1 (48:59):
That's true, but you stop breaking us this piece of
paper nothing on it. But it's my idea. What do
you call when you what is it called? It's a treatment?
When it's just a kind of an outline? Tell me
you wouldn't watch Ferris Bueller's Sun's Day. I thought they're
already developing. That's already stole your idea, or they were
doing a TV show or something. You know, they're rebooting everything.
(49:20):
They are rebooting everything. By the way, speaking of reboots,
I put this on Twitter today. Did you see who's
in the Release TV commercial? And the what reallyes? The
reallyse TV commercial? Al Bundy really is selling a six
dollar margarita? Okay, and it's throwback to nineties Steve herkle
(49:42):
more significantly hotter? Uh, Carl Winslow, wrong sex?
Speaker 3 (49:51):
Oh, Tiffany ammerthieson boom?
Speaker 1 (49:54):
Really? How did I get that? Maybe I saw it
in its low? I mean, I have you mut so
it wasn't I have there? There are two insane crushes
I have from the nineteen nineties, Tiffany Ambertheesen who she
called herself. No, Jenny Garth. Which one is that? Beverly
(50:17):
Hills on on two one. Oh oh, that's not Waning Garth. No, oh okay,
I'm going to Rellies now all right? No, you're not,
by the way, now, are you kidding me? To get
a six? Hoar Margarine?
Speaker 3 (50:32):
To hang out with tif good. She looks fantastic.
Speaker 1 (50:35):
And she's not gonna allow you to touch or talk
to her. It's funny she said, touch then talk, because
I know what you'd go for first, the hug.
Speaker 3 (50:45):
Of course I hugged Alssa Milano.
Speaker 1 (50:47):
You did. Yeah, that's cool.
Speaker 3 (50:49):
Radio Row remember wow, No I don't remember.
Speaker 1 (50:53):
Oh yeah, yeah, I remember that. That's good for you.
That's should go on. She's a whack job though she's
she's very very political these days. I definitely have her
muted on Twitter, Yeah for sure, all right. Eleven thirteen
on Sports Talk seven ninety seven one three, two, one
two five seven ninety Do you have your gut feelings
ready to go? We'll be giving away some Space Cowboy
(51:13):
tickets coming up before the top of the hour. Gut
Feelings one is involving the rockets, and one is involving
the Astros. Eleven thirteen on Sports Talk seven ninety. All right,
there's a new member of the military at the Texans
Demiko Ryan saying that General Soreness has made its way
over there. But that was horrific.
Speaker 3 (51:33):
That actually actually wasn't that bad. Are you sure it
wasn't that bad? I've heard worse.
Speaker 1 (51:38):
I mean, yeah, I mean I don't normally come up.
I've heard a lot worse on this station. Hmmm, oh
what hour. Don't you hear that kind of stuff? I
was wondering where you go. You got a little bit
of I got a gil chuckle. So I'm proud of you.
Wasn't that bad? I've heard, Like I said, I've heard
worse for me or from other people in the station both.
(51:58):
Oh yeah, primarily from the people in mist of course.
All right. Eleven eighteen on Sports Talk seventy. So at
least General Soreness. Let me ask you this, okay, Because
we're not doctors, we can just play a guessing game.
It is June third, Yes, when was the last time
(52:19):
he threw a pass in something meaningful?
Speaker 3 (52:23):
Beginning of January? So it's been five months.
Speaker 1 (52:28):
But he does off season workouts, So he could have
tweaked it in a workout, Yeah, hitting the weights, running
right right, doing drills, a little bit, throwing probably some.
I would imagine some offseason working out with the receiver
Riss and Kirk comes to town. Hey man, let's go
catch up. Let's go to dinner and throw the football
around a little bit. Yeah, toss the pigskin. The Astros
(52:52):
have done this to us. Thank you, Astros. You're ruining
it for every sport. I'm going to go glass half
full on this, ladies and gentlemen and tell you that
I do believe what Demko says. It's gonna be okay,
(53:14):
general soreness. I mean he's out there, like you said,
he's out there, he's in okay. He's like in shorts
and not necessarily. Yeah. Yeah, he doesn't have a big
cast on his arm, so that's good. He doesn't have
people signing his autographs on his cast. Do kids even
do that anymore? That's a great question. Do you know
(53:35):
who we ask JK JK you you broke a leg
at some point in your life, I mean running, Did
you have people sign your cast?
Speaker 4 (53:42):
No?
Speaker 7 (53:42):
But my girl, the teacher they are in her home run.
Her kid brought the test and he's in eighth grade
and they're all signing his stuff.
Speaker 3 (53:52):
Popularity thing, like the eighth graders are doing the cast sign.
Speaker 1 (53:54):
Yeah, that's great if to use like a sharpie, right,
you can't use like a thin like a big pen
or something like that. I mean you could, but you're
gonna be there for a while going over the ridges
of the cast. Yeah, your name all squraggly all over.
Speaker 3 (54:13):
H I will buy. Listen to me very seriously.
Speaker 1 (54:16):
No, you're right, you're right, because I don't it's not
it's not absurd. I know it's it's first of all,
not in season. He's gonna be fine, he says. Battle
Red Ross is concerned, but I know it's gonna it's
gonna be okay. Week one of the regular season, September seventh,
(54:39):
we're three months away. Should be fine. Okay.
Speaker 3 (54:41):
So let me ask you this.
Speaker 1 (54:42):
If he doesn't throw in mini camp, do you have
that same sort of it's general sons because mini camps
at the end of the month, correct, so then they're
off for another month before they get the training. I
don't know. Yeah, he is our official, as our Texans
insider somebody just texted me how many breaking new sounders
(55:04):
for general soreness? Yeah, I'm not doing you know what,
You're not getting us breaking we broke it yesterday or
Aaron Wilson broke it yesterday, friend of the station.
Speaker 3 (55:12):
Yeah, you're not getting any zero, but it is.
Speaker 1 (55:16):
I'm glad. I'm glad y'all are in the breaking new
sounder effect. Thank you for listening, Thank you for listening
and being a part of the show, that's for sure. Yeah,
and that's really the only thing about OTA is. I mean,
I don't care who the offensive line is. I don't
care who's running good routes. Dalton Schultz is a practice today.
You know what you know, Dalton Schultz said to me,
disappointed me, He disappointed everyone. He's gonna bounce back minor
(55:39):
setback for a major comeback. Matt, call your shot on
Dalton Schultz touchdowns in twenty twenty seventeen.
Speaker 3 (55:46):
That's not even close. You're a liar.
Speaker 1 (55:49):
Seven.
Speaker 3 (55:50):
I was gonna say, if he wants a Kitna, you
probably seventeen catches.
Speaker 1 (55:52):
Maybe, Hey, come on, he's gonna have more than seventeen catches.
Speaker 3 (55:56):
I think maybe not with all these wide receivers, that's okay.
Speaker 1 (56:00):
Number of pass routes erroneously run seventeen. Oh what drops seventeen? Oh,
he's not gonna have seventeen drops holdings seventeen.
Speaker 3 (56:10):
No, you're not getting the in on second ls.
Speaker 1 (56:13):
Not here. It'll be fine. By the way, Laramie Tunseel
not showing up at OTA's for the Washington. They didn't
read negotiate. They didn't give him a new deal yet yet.
Oh that's great, he's your problem now, Washington. By the way,
there were some rumors speaking of x Texans that Stefan
(56:34):
Diggs might have been released by the Patriots and they've
decided not to do so, that he might have been
and they decided there was there were some reports thinking
about it, and they're not doing it.
Speaker 4 (56:46):
Well.
Speaker 1 (56:46):
I think he Yeah, I saw something about him having
to pass a physical and they haven't said that he
has done that, but there were thoughts of that. I
guess June first changes some things on some contracts, and yeah,
when you designate somebody to post June first cut, you
save them more a cap general depending on the deal.
I mean, honestly, I think it's going to be a
disaster for Steffan digs up there. I don't think for
(57:07):
I think, first of all, when you're coming off in
a cl you're how can you be anything close to
what you were? Second of always on the wrong side
of thirty. And thirdly, he likes giving half ziploc bags
to bucks and women in return for favors. He's hanging
out with Cardi B.
Speaker 3 (57:25):
Who's taking pictures of the other women?
Speaker 1 (57:27):
It was Cardi B. Yes, three other women, Stefan Diggs
on a boat. What could go wrong? Nothing for Stefan.
That sounds like a good time to me. Four women,
Stefan and a boat. Oh, I think he was doing
all right that weekend. Have you seen the video? Ross? Yeah,
you haven't wait? Which video?
Speaker 3 (57:49):
Which are you talking about? Are you talking about all
talking about?
Speaker 1 (57:57):
Yeah? What do you mean? It doesn't look like a
good time to you.
Speaker 3 (58:01):
Gotta tell you all something you want to be on
the boat?
Speaker 1 (58:05):
Well, Doug. But number two, when you when you see
these stories about these athletes, and I mentioned this last
week when when were talking about Stefan Diggs. Mm hmm.
What you think happens on these boats and in these
parties and in these hotel rooms and in these whatevers
are largely accurate. M So you're saying is is a
(58:28):
boat sex party. Put it this way. If you see
a guy at a club with five or six girls
and they're just hey, don't read into it. They're just
having a good time. No, there's probably more to it.
There's drugs, music.
Speaker 3 (58:43):
And sex. This looks like a great time. Money, Yeah,
just in true Stefan Diggs fashion.
Speaker 1 (58:53):
No, not the way to end yourself to a new
football team who frankly overpaid you to kobe a receiver
on their team. Well, it looks like that. Chicken wings
and hot dogs too. This is a great boat party.
Can you tell me they fed them? Yeah, chicken wings
and hot dogs, fed them, sexed him, drugged them well,
drugged against their will. I don't want to see that. Well,
there's more than three girls on there. Oh my god,
(59:14):
look at this video. They're like twenty of them. That's
what we were trying to dis is having a good offseason.
Let me tell you, I'm coming back to my next
leftist fandggs. Oh my god, look at those women doing
all those things again, it's all true. No need to say,
they're just having a good time, relaxing they're doing more
(59:35):
than that. There's a lot of a lot of Cardio
being a supply to there and that we'll get togethersh
I see what you did there, Cardio with Cardi. Also
Damik O Ryan saying that Christian Harris will be ready
for training camp. I thank god he is not practiced
during voluntary OTAs. That media has attended that. According to
(59:56):
our Texans insider Adam Wexler, great follow Adam J. Wexler
on Twitter. You want to get a camp report from him? No, Oh,
we've done enough. You gonna read his tweets. No, I'm
just gonna read. I mean they're all saying the same thing.
Johonathandxson more on this two to six general soreness. I mean,
(01:00:17):
I mean, no, they're not going full four hours. They
got astros today, so it's two to four thirty one
decad four thirty. Oh wow, that's good. They're doing that.
I think I think it's a five forty first pitch
of early all week, right because it's Pittsburgh and then Cleveland.
Speaker 3 (01:00:32):
Yes, correct, good for them, that's fine.
Speaker 1 (01:00:34):
I'm pushing them the best. No, they'll put the extra
hours in with a Saturday on deck. Oh, I'm doing
it this week, all right. Seven one three two one
two five seven doty seven one three two one. I'm
gonna take. It's funny I take. I'm taking two days
off tomorrow and Thursday, but working Saturday.
Speaker 3 (01:00:49):
But I'm still no.
Speaker 1 (01:00:51):
I do it. No, I'll be more than happy. I
gotta do my I gotta pull my weight around these parts,
not Saturday. Right, then quit your bitch, okay seven one
three two one two five seven ninety. Time now for
some gut feelings where you need to make your sports predictions.
You simply call the radio show said one three two
one two five seven ninety and tell us what's gonna
happen in sports. If you hit it right, you call
(01:01:12):
us back a few weeks later, and you brag about it.
If you're wrong, we largely will forget about it, unless
it was so preposterous that we have to make fun
of you. Seven one three two one two five seven
nine zero two Join us in a gut feeling. Listen, up,
boys been so appealing, wasn't that tummy?
Speaker 8 (01:01:30):
You'll they got a gut paling.
Speaker 1 (01:01:32):
This is their gut feeling on the Matt Thomas Show.
All right, here we go with gut feelings, and man,
I have a boatload of gut feelings. Hopefully you do.
Now here's the bit Brad is with us online.
Speaker 4 (01:01:48):
One.
Speaker 1 (01:01:48):
We know how Brad is with his gut feelings and
how atrocious they know. Are you sure? I'm not? I'm asking?
Is that the Brad Jonathan is Brad like regular Brad
or our special bread or it's the Brad.
Speaker 3 (01:02:02):
It's how God feels Brad. No, Okay, So here's the thing.
Speaker 1 (01:02:07):
Anybody that wants to get in before Brad can do
so at seven one three two one two five seven ninety. Now,
if you don't call and give us your gut feelings,
you're gonna be hearing from Brad here shortly. We can
only do so much christ seven one three two one
two five seven ninety seven one three two one two
(01:02:28):
five seven ninety before we give you this week's a
gut feelings.
Speaker 3 (01:02:31):
How did we do last Tuesday?
Speaker 1 (01:02:33):
All right, last Tuesday, Matt you said ops over seven
fifty through June for Jake Myers. Yeah, I really appreciate
this vote of confidence that you're showing in. You're welcome.
That's great. Let's see, he's been on a bit of
a swoon. I don't know what his stats are right now,
(01:02:53):
but I am trying to pull them up. Jake Myers
seven fifty three, you're the clear right now for now.
Come on, Jakie, we don't need this post May first
thing again. Thirty first, I should say you also said
Alex Bregman will be a Red Sox in twenty twenty
six as and he will opt back in. That is correct.
(01:03:15):
I feel great about that. You also said Chris Paul
will be a Portland Trailblazer. Just throwing that out there.
Let's see. I said Hunter Brown will throw seven innings
of one run ball. I think it was six innings
of one run ball last week, so I was close, close,
but no seagar. I also said lancemc colors junior goes
five oh and third twelve strikeouts, tied to career high
(01:03:41):
with strikeouts. How are we feeling, Maddie or feel like
you better be that good tonight against Paul Skimes. More
on that in a moment. Ooh little precursor there. I
like it. Joe Mixon's last year as a Houston Texan.
Oh wait did you say to me? You said that?
I wrote that in mind? YEP, might be yeah, I
don't that's fine, or I think I said, I agree
with Youggy. That's what we call it, piggyback. Some might
(01:04:04):
call it a bit steal. I call it a piggyback.
I can't respect that. And then also Jonathan Allen got
on the Jake Myers train say he's gonna have his
best offensive season of his career, which he is so far.
Let's go baby, all right, So that is in hand.
Now Brian and Philip have stepped up, so Brad gets
pushed back. Thank god. Remember, the more you call and
(01:04:25):
give us your gut feelings, the better shot you have
and not hearing from Brad seven one three two one
two five seven, And you're ready for my gut feelings. Yes,
they're gonna come fast, they're gonna come furious. Okay, gut feeling.
Rockets do not draft tenth in the NBA draft. Ooh okay,
I like that, as in, it'll be part of a
(01:04:48):
trade package. They'll move up, they'll move down, or you're
taking all covering all base. You know something? Oh yeah, okay,
insider empty No no no no no no no, yeah, I
don't know anything. I saw those pictures of you and
raphel Stone in the Ferris Wheel on Twitter.
Speaker 3 (01:05:06):
We were together.
Speaker 1 (01:05:06):
Yeah, we were at the Downtown or we at the Mariam, Themariam.
We might have been the Mima nord Walk or the Rockyard.
I don't know anything. I just feel them my bones,
all right, I think I think this is a good one.
Speaker 3 (01:05:23):
Okay, that's number one.
Speaker 1 (01:05:25):
Number two you will not see your on Alvatze until
after the All Star break. God. Yeah, that feels right too, God,
And that is seven weeks. I didn't even want to
respond to this, Okay, don't send me off, don't do
(01:05:46):
it then, don't respond, Just write it down and when
I'm right you just give him out.
Speaker 3 (01:05:53):
Anything else right now? Or do you want to marinate
on something.
Speaker 1 (01:05:57):
I'm going to marinate on something, but I'm I need
some space. That's juicy, that's what you call it. Radio
tease folks. All right, I'm gonna go go. Oh your
heasan'd already first rout is fine. We don't believe you
say it. Luci Stroud is fine. So you're so defining
(01:06:23):
fine for the sake of heally, he's ready for week one?
Speaker 3 (01:06:27):
Is that too much? Ready for training camp? Make a
prediction about what he's gonna do at mini camp.
Speaker 1 (01:06:34):
You ready to do that? He might still not be thrown.
When is that in a couple of weeks. Yeah, I'm
saying ready for training camp. I'm just gonna go there.
That's all I can go. I'm not a doctor. I
have not seen I haven't seen his imaging. Hopefully he's
got a different imaging guy than the Astros do. Okay,
so you're saying by the start of training camp, this
shoulder bit will be a non bit. Yes, okay, that
(01:06:56):
feels good. Lance mccullor's junior.
Speaker 3 (01:07:03):
What about him? He's pitching tonight. What was that.
Speaker 1 (01:07:08):
Second Drake diss song that he dropped in a row
against Meek Mill.
Speaker 3 (01:07:12):
You're asking me that question? What was it called?
Speaker 1 (01:07:15):
JK? It was called back to back. We're going back
to back quality starts for Lance mccullor's junior. Two weeks ago.
By the way, I got feeling some people said he
was going to be out of the rotation by June fifteenth.
I said, I'm staying on Lance mccullor's junior island and
we're going back to back quality starts. Baby, what's up? Hmm? Okay, please? Lance,
(01:07:43):
you could do it, baby, Jonathan. What he got.
Speaker 7 (01:07:48):
All I got today is bragging, right, everybody over here, Caers,
we're gonna go all the way.
Speaker 1 (01:07:58):
He did.
Speaker 7 (01:07:59):
But in those all back here and I just want
to calmly say, Pacers and six and that's my.
Speaker 1 (01:08:05):
Pacer six WHOA Just to steal a line from a
great seventies and eighties show. What'd you talking about? Jonathan
got to go all the way the way Pacers in six?
You're insane for that. Nobody's saying, black Jack, you go
for the you know what you are, you know what
you do. Doubling down, You're doubling down on You're doubling
down on fourteen. Yeah, while we're here, and I'm gonna
(01:08:28):
win to watch. I'm all right here we go thunder
and five, thunder and five. I said that yesterday. I'm
not backing away from it. Thunder and five. About this one,
you guys want to put this one on lowess run
in NBA finals in history? No, weren't there weren't the
covid ones like Wonky and really low Yes? Okay, how
were were they better? Because the Lakers were in?
Speaker 6 (01:08:46):
I care?
Speaker 1 (01:08:47):
How about lowest non covid NBA Finals? Because those were
in like in the middle of the summer. Remember that.
Anybody want to put their name on that one. Yes
or no, I'm not touching. I don't care.
Speaker 3 (01:08:56):
The basketball is gonna be good.
Speaker 1 (01:08:57):
Pay attention to America in Houston, Tyrese Haliburton, Shag Gildes,
Alexander Cheded, Holmgren, Miles Turner, I mean, Pascal Si, Jaylen Williams.
Jalen Williams is great. It's gonna be a it might
be a beatdown finals, but there's good players. There's good players.
Might be a beatdown finals. All right, we'll see. All right,
let's go to the phones and get people that want
to talk. Look at them, but they came through. They're like,
(01:09:18):
we don't want to hear Brad under any circle. So
we love the support you guys have shown. That's why
we love you. Has Brad been doing this too long?
We love Brad?
Speaker 3 (01:09:25):
No, I don't I do Brown with us to thirty
thousand in Vegas.
Speaker 1 (01:09:28):
I give him.
Speaker 3 (01:09:29):
He'll always be in my special place in my heart
for that.
Speaker 1 (01:09:31):
Okay? Well seven one three, two, one two five seven
nine zero. Let's go to Phillip on seven Ony, Phillip,
what's in your gut this week.
Speaker 5 (01:09:41):
Uh, the New York Knicks will never go anywhere until
they get another superstar.
Speaker 6 (01:09:48):
There go Pacers.
Speaker 5 (01:09:52):
Jake Myers batting champ this year.
Speaker 6 (01:09:55):
Cy Young, Cy Young, Lance McCullers, all.
Speaker 1 (01:09:58):
Right, you're obviously good. You know what you're sniff and glue.
Thank you very much for the phone call. I mean,
we don't mind if you sniff glue. It's not safe,
but I understand why people do it. I think you
should mind. Folks at home, don't sniff glue. You're in
that gorilla glue stick to your hands. Oh my god,
it takes hours to get rid of it. What were
(01:10:20):
you doing with gorilla glue? You thought it was a
bottle of something else? Gary in Spring Gary? Did you
call the morning show today?
Speaker 6 (01:10:29):
I did.
Speaker 3 (01:10:30):
Now they were hitting on you. What did you say
that was so crazy?
Speaker 1 (01:10:34):
I just told him. I just told him.
Speaker 9 (01:10:36):
When they're talking about the astros and the doctors and
all these sports doctors, I said, I told them that
they're driving me over to the other talk show because
they're beating a dead horse. Talk about it, but don't
just one after another after another after another, Just you know,
just let it go. We all know about it, and
we're all sad about it and so forth.
Speaker 5 (01:10:56):
So long.
Speaker 1 (01:10:56):
Right, Well, if you want to, if you if you
want to take shots to Matthews, I'm all for it.
Every day you're walcome, welcome to call this show. Gary,
Are you the one that called man a clown? He
didn't call me com But we're past that. I'm just
asking somebody else, all right, Gary, what's in your gut?
Speaker 6 (01:11:10):
I got to him.
Speaker 9 (01:11:11):
You took one from the I got a gut feeling that, uh,
if mccullor's pitch is less than twenty pitches in the
first inning, he will get a quality start. And the
other one is a sure thing that if Brad gets
on his gut failings are really really really gonna suck.
Speaker 1 (01:11:27):
Okay, there it is. That's a hit. That's the hit
right there. That's all right, it's a guarantee. All right,
short time out, we'll come back. We'll talk to Jody
Brian then Brad. Unless you call in front of him,
please call in seven one three two one two five

Speaker 2 (01:12:47):
But oh but.
Speaker 4 (01:12:51):
Ouch, one of the guys in the outfield will and
that would be Cam Smith.
Speaker 1 (01:12:56):
Oh okay, he will have a better month than that.
Speaker 4 (01:13:01):
And Diaz will be over eight hundred for the month
of June.
Speaker 1 (01:13:08):
Okay. Not yands No, not Yandy no.
Speaker 4 (01:13:12):
Last one. Andrew Heaney will be an Astro this year
as a as a trade.
Speaker 1 (01:13:18):
Mmm, man, you went specific on this, Jody, I have
tremendous respect for your gut feelings this week.
Speaker 3 (01:13:22):
I don't know if I'm ever gonna hit, but you
are messing around, and for that I thank you.
Speaker 5 (01:13:27):
You bet you.
Speaker 3 (01:13:28):
Andrew Heaney, I've not heard his.
Speaker 1 (01:13:31):
Name all right?
Speaker 6 (01:13:32):
For the uh?
Speaker 1 (01:13:33):
I mean, yeah, anybody that plays for them is up
for trade speculations except SKS apparently. Yeah, that's well, even him,
maybe for the right package and a couple of well, no,
it will be now, but in a couple of years. Yeah,
isn't that? I mean, I know that everyone will sposed
to be feeling bad for their teams, but this isn't
there a part of sadness that a generational feels like
pitcher that got picked by a sucky ass team to
(01:13:55):
hopefully change him around can't. First of all, I can't
do it by himself. And second of all, no one
in Pittsburgh thinks this guy's going to be a pirate
for life? Is it bad for who? The organization?
Speaker 6 (01:14:04):
Is it?
Speaker 1 (01:14:04):
The skeins are both I would say baseball for baseball,
I guess.
Speaker 6 (01:14:10):
So.
Speaker 1 (01:14:11):
I mean that we're already speculating that he's like, where
is he going to go next? And you know what,
if they were smart, they would try to buy out
his arbitration years and give him a little bump for
three or four years after. But the Pirates have never
done that before. No, oh no, it's going to take
like a ten Well how long was you need like
ten plus years probably for him to even and the
(01:14:31):
Pirates don't want to come into that. No, what was
the Bobby wit deal for? Wasn't around there?
Speaker 3 (01:14:37):
I just don't know if you treat pitchers and everyday
players differently.
Speaker 1 (01:14:40):
Yeah, Bobby Witt was eleven years, two hundred and eighty
eighty eight million.
Speaker 3 (01:14:45):
When reached by Pittsburgh Pirate officials, they choked on their lunch.
Speaker 7 (01:14:49):
You know.
Speaker 1 (01:14:50):
The crazy thing is if we went and look at
the books at the Pirates, Julio Rico is is twelve years.
If we look to the books of the Pittsburgh Pirates,
you know how much money they're making. I mean it's
got to be. And they're making money, beautiful, beautiful profits
despite a half field stadium, no basically a non existing
TV contract and a team that generally speaking wins no
(01:15:11):
more than about seventy games a year. Out on that
bits Brog Pirate baseball field exciting when they sell a
lot of dogs. When Paul Skans is thrown, it would
be good tonight. What will the crowd be for? What
are what are the crowd games for Paul Skins games?
You think they do dynamic pricings, Paul Skans throwing cover
double price? Yeah, that's only game we they care about. Yeah,
let's talk to Jimmy on seven on Jimmy, what is
(01:15:34):
in your gut?
Speaker 8 (01:15:36):
Matt My, My gut feel is a little bit unconventional
this week. But uh, last week when Ross was off,
I felt like it was just unnecessary. The shots you
were taking at him, saying, you know he was suspended,
telling people Twitter.
Speaker 1 (01:15:50):
Yeah you said some people, yeah is that true? Not true?
And you said for people to on follow me.
Speaker 6 (01:15:56):
No, I never said that he hated on your contents.
Speaker 8 (01:16:00):
He is need a Twitter, Instagram you encourage people, don't
follow you. The people calling in off the tenth ending
show saying they missed Ross and he's getting mad love it.
People miss Ross.
Speaker 1 (01:16:09):
There were two people that called now like twenty Hey, hey,
two calls in a postgame is good.
Speaker 6 (01:16:14):
I was one of them.
Speaker 1 (01:16:16):
No, you know what, Jimmy, Jimmy Jimmy, you're Ross's be ich.
I get you fine, Yes, you're Ross's beach. Thank you
for the support, Jimmy, So Matt My my dep pilling.
Speaker 8 (01:16:29):
Is that karmas gonna get you this week when you're off.
Nothing sad, but.
Speaker 6 (01:16:33):
But you know what, you know what, you know what?
Speaker 1 (01:16:34):
Hey, I'm taking two days off to help out my
wife and I'm not and no one's gonna miss me.
I get it. I'm fine with all. We're all gonna
miss you's gonna miss me, that's fine, gonna miss me here.
I'm coming to give you a hug right now. Man, God,
don't do it. No hit hard.
Speaker 8 (01:16:52):
For no reason, just just that kind of stuff. Anyway,
enjoy your time off.
Speaker 1 (01:16:57):
But I'm back Friday. Thank you, jim you'll see what
the immediate response time this week? Yes, tomorrow, Wednesday, Thursday.
I got I've sent two schedules out about this. I forgot.
I've been very busy. I do you forget it's on
your email. I don't check my email that much. Oh
you know I'm gonna get. Yes, what I'm gonna do,
I'm buying you a daytime er. This what I'm gonna
(01:17:19):
use it. I'm trying trying to get better. You know
how some You don't know this, Jonathan, but I am
obsessed with organizers. I go to raffice Racks just to go.
I don't buy anything. I just like to.
Speaker 3 (01:17:31):
I like to go window shopping there. Rafice Racks, yeah,
or raples.
Speaker 1 (01:17:37):
Don't do No tables tables, I mean tables tables, anything else?
Any other letter, any other letter, Matt, that's true, I
picked the wrong one. I always go to ours a default.
(01:17:59):
You ever notice that rennies rallies rallies, I mean really really.
Speaker 3 (01:18:09):
So I'm gonna go get you now. You want to
You want a small one?
Speaker 6 (01:18:11):
Right?
Speaker 1 (01:18:13):
How about five by seven ish? Okay, don't put your
fingers index fingers out like that ever? Again? Why not?
Because I don't want to look at that size? Brian
on seven ninety Brian, what's in your gut this week?
Speaker 10 (01:18:25):
Well, you'll give me a little tap last week about
my gut prediction? Man almost got it?
Speaker 3 (01:18:31):
Yeah in the NASCAR bit, right, wasn't a NASCAR or something?
Speaker 6 (01:18:35):
Uh do do the NASCAR?
Speaker 10 (01:18:37):
Congratulations Ryan Blandy winning in uh Nashville Super Speedway. I'm
a My gut feeling this week is Kyle Busch will
take Michigan on Sunday. But last week I predicted the
Strows to beat Open Metal both games with at least
six runs.
Speaker 1 (01:18:51):
I missed it by one.
Speaker 6 (01:18:54):
Games.
Speaker 1 (01:18:57):
I like what people because that's the best part about
it feeling when you call him, brag about him.
Speaker 3 (01:19:01):
Yeah, the O Cremento pitching is horrible.
Speaker 1 (01:19:03):
Oh sucks. By the way, one more time for the brag.
I'm the longest gut feeling. He just won't give me
the title yet. But what did you say he won't
give you the title for the longest gut feeling. Uh,
took it the longest to hit. I don't know if
that's the longest one. We'll find we can find better ones.
But no, it was a great one. It was a
(01:19:24):
long shot too. Congratulations John Jonathan. The longest gut rielling.
No we can say is I believe that everybody will
have to play one overseas game in the NFL per year.
Speaker 3 (01:19:37):
That's my old timer. Okay, that's why I haven't done.
Speaker 1 (01:19:40):
Let's go here we go last, but certainly not least.
Brad on seven ninety Brad, what's in your gut this week?
Speaker 11 (01:19:49):
Well, first of all, I called hi about a year
ago and said rock Party would get a huge payday
and that gut feeling did hit.
Speaker 1 (01:19:57):
You also said Will Wagner was going to be the
everyday third base for the Blue Jays.
Speaker 11 (01:20:01):
Well he did make Toronto, though he will be soon enough.
Speaker 1 (01:20:05):
He's six at the major league level.
Speaker 11 (01:20:09):
That's this year.
Speaker 1 (01:20:10):
Baseball is honey game.
Speaker 3 (01:20:11):
He's twenty six years old.
Speaker 1 (01:20:14):
Go Ahead's okay, Yeah's okay, go ahead.
Speaker 11 (01:20:17):
I'm I'm gonna be the new leader of the fan
club like you with Myers, Jacob Melton.
Speaker 1 (01:20:25):
You don't need a left hander.
Speaker 11 (01:20:26):
This is gonna be your left hand back right there.
Uh second, Shador Sanders. If he doesn't start at the
beginning of the year, he will find his way as
the starting quarterback of the Cleveland Browns this year because
whoever else will be starting will suck and he will
end up being.
Speaker 1 (01:20:46):
The starting quarterback and the last one.
Speaker 11 (01:20:48):
Fans, sorry Rocket fans, Oklahoma City Thunder will not only
win this year.
Speaker 1 (01:20:54):
They got three.
Speaker 11 (01:20:56):
Championships ahead in a row by Rockets. No, I say
one more in a row and then the third one
o'bar will be spread within the next five years. They
got the free agency, They've got the trays, They've got
the draft picks. They already have a superstar, two centers
(01:21:16):
and the rest of the second April.
Speaker 3 (01:21:19):
They're not gonna be able to pay everybody in Oklahoma City.
Speaker 1 (01:21:21):
We're gonna get better. They're only going to get better.
Speaker 3 (01:21:24):
I can't pay everyone. That's how James hard.
Speaker 1 (01:21:27):
That's what we were saying when James Harden and UH
and Kevin Duran and Russell Westbrook were all playing together. Man,
this young core, they're gonna be great for the next decade.
Can't pay everybody. He's Olahoma City?
Speaker 3 (01:21:38):
Did I Adam right? Is he claiming five NBA titles
for Oklahoma City?
Speaker 6 (01:21:41):
No?
Speaker 1 (01:21:41):
Three of the next five? That's not happening. You can
take take an al on that because guess what, they'll
be a prey in Houston, Texas. What And I'm gonna
get my own fire truck, Oh my gosh, Oh hell yeah?
I am for the NBA Championship.
Speaker 3 (01:21:56):
Absolutely.
Speaker 1 (01:21:59):
I hope you're right. That's all I can say. And
guess what you think Steve Sparks goes crazy in the
Astro Clubhouse when they win? Is that what you're gonna do?
You're gonna goose? Hell yeah?
Speaker 6 (01:22:10):
I am.
Speaker 3 (01:22:10):
You're like, who is this guy?
Speaker 1 (01:22:11):
Yeah, they don't know my name. They will after the
postgame celebration. Okay, So you're gonna get in a wet
suit and start chugging beers, and I'm gonna chug anything
that's available to me. Champagne okay, thank you for specifying
Hennessy Okay, beer wine, vodka, Night Train, Whiskey, Boons, Farm Boons,
(01:22:39):
Mad Dog, Yeah, everything. Okay. I won't make it out
of there. Basically, I'll be basically carry down on a stretcher. Yeah,
they're gonna have to stretch you out. Yes, they're gonna
go who is that ball? White man getting stretch out
of our locker room? And then I'm gonna say, does
that guy do our radio games? I will promise you
(01:22:59):
they will win a championship and they still won't know
my name. Okay, So you want to write that down,
gut feeling in the next five championship, in the next
five years, write it down, put my name on it.
Let's go putting your name on it. You heard me,
I didn't swear that means that goes to the file.
It does go to the file. Five years, within the
next five years, all right, I'm coming after you. I
(01:23:23):
want you to be right. You'll be with me too,
you know.
Speaker 3 (01:23:25):
I'll get you on that.
Speaker 1 (01:23:26):
I'll get you on my Uh. Here's what's getting on
my my, my fire truck, me, my family. None of
this is happening. Your brother, your brother, Ray. This is
all fantasy, your mom and dad. Okay, I think it's
about it, all right. I don't think you're getting the
(01:23:46):
fire truck.
Speaker 3 (01:23:46):
I'll let you sit in the front seat with the
driver with the down man. Can I put on a
Can I put on a fire hat? Fireman's hat?
Speaker 1 (01:23:52):
Yes, you can? You can?
Speaker 3 (01:23:53):
You can pull the bell to Yeah, that's nice.
Speaker 1 (01:23:56):
All right. It is twelve o'clock on Sports Talk seven ninety.
The new Who's at Noon is coming up in just
a matter of moments. If you'd like to join us
seven one three two one two five seven ninety seven
one three two one two five seven nine zero. All right,
right now, before we get to the News at Noon,
I've got a four pack of tickets to see a
(01:24:19):
Space Cowboys game of your choice. All you have to
do is call Jonathan right now at seven one three
two one two five seven ninety and tell us what
gut feeling he hit on and was bragging on in
the last segment of the show. Okay, so if you
know the answer to that question, you're going to see
(01:24:42):
the Space Cowboys take on the game of your choice.
I don't want to thank my friends at Tager Brewing
for giving us a tickets t A l Yaard Brewing
dot com, Tager Brewing dot com. Stone's Throw from Constellation Field.
I by telling you more about them after I tell
you to tell Ross to get ready for.
Speaker 10 (01:24:59):
The News News noon.
Speaker 1 (01:25:03):
And the News at noon. Here is the Frank Billingsley
of Houston sports journalism. Ross Vidoro that a weather guy
stay with me on this. Okay, all right, well, yes man,
happy to be with your hero. All the news at noon.
We start with some Texans news, so we'll get to
the Astros and other things in a moment. Ian a
(01:25:24):
Rap report along with others of course, reporting about coach
Demiko Ryan speaking about c J. Stroud's limited reps in
the spring, tomik O Ryan's quote, there's no concerns with CJ.
It's just general soreness. We're taking extra precaution with him,
but he'll be good to go. No concerns on my end. There,
(01:25:48):
also apparently reiterating general soreness. Believe the word or not.
I believe him, me too, different organization. We're gonna we've
got Astro's training staff PTSD.
Speaker 3 (01:26:03):
But I'll again, I'll bring up the question I brought
up a half an hour ago.
Speaker 1 (01:26:07):
If he's got general soreness in June, what the hell
was he doing in the previous months? It would great
such general story working out. You guys want to tell
you the winner right now?
Speaker 7 (01:26:15):
Yeah, it's a winner's name, Mark Mark right here, guy
winner man. Thank you Markers. He knows that your boy
knows ball. That's right, all right, Thank you, and his
boy is modest too. Continue on with the news show.
Speaker 1 (01:26:25):
Mark is the winner. Thank you for all of you
who are calling in, but we have a winner, Mark,
Thank you for that. Thank you, tireds browing for dropping
those tickets off for us. Also reported at texans OTA's
Iron Sharpens Iron Matt Nico Collins working with Kamari Lassitter.
Nico Collins on the side with Kamari Lassiter as lastater
(01:26:49):
is working on press coverage. Nico Collins working on his releases,
so hopefully both of them looking better for the upcoming season.
Speaker 3 (01:26:56):
Matt, you want to predictions about their season?
Speaker 1 (01:27:01):
Statsu Nico Collins?
Speaker 3 (01:27:05):
Hunter catches?
Speaker 1 (01:27:07):
How about was he all pro this year?
Speaker 6 (01:27:10):
No?
Speaker 1 (01:27:14):
First or second team? All Pro? Nico Collins got feeling?
Who what's that? You?
Speaker 3 (01:27:18):
You are a battle red Ross?
Speaker 12 (01:27:20):
Let's go?
Speaker 1 (01:27:25):
Do they put three wide receivers of the first team?
Does Christian Kirk understand what you just said? Christian Kirk's
gonna be great in the slot? Nico Collins ex baby
getting down the field? Did you see what this offense
was without Nico Collins? As long as he stays healthy.
It's the NFL. It's a very violent sport. You have
a big asterisk next to it. I have a string injuries. No,
I mean the look if he gets hurt, he doesn't
make the team. And that's it. That's I mean, that
(01:27:46):
is what it is.
Speaker 6 (01:27:47):
All right.
Speaker 1 (01:27:49):
Let's keep moving on, Matt with some of the top
sports news items of the day. Texas Tech overcomes the
Oklahoma dynasty. They defeat the Sooners and the ladies are
headed to the Women's College World Series. Matt, your thoughts.
I like the Red Raiders because their uniforms fit better
(01:28:09):
than the Texas players do. What does that mean? I
don't think I need a further explanation. Well, hum, I'm
asking for further explanation. I think if you watch the game,
you'll say the uniforms fit the Red Raiders better than
the Texas players. Uniforms fit all right. Elsehoe, I'm at
(01:28:30):
in baseball, Mike trout back playing hit a four hundred
and fifty four foot tank against the Boston Red Sox
and the Angels seven to six victory, second three hit
game in three starts since returning in the injured list Friday.
Angels almost blew that they were let They led five
to nothing after the end of the first inning. Wow,
(01:28:53):
that's I was saying, nice Red Sox comeback. I had
to be listening to that. How's how's Alex Bregman doing
these days? Not playing?
Speaker 6 (01:28:59):
Oh?
Speaker 1 (01:29:00):
Wow, that's all right? All right? Well, elsewhere on the
news at noon, Matt the Astros settling into Pittsburgh for
a three game set today. Paul schemes he's got a
two point one five VRA, which might be the lowest
in baseball. Do you know what his win loss record is?
He's four and five, four and five with a two
(01:29:21):
point one five VIRA. How frustrating is that. Can you
win a sy Young and had the under five hundred record,
He's gonna be ten and fifteen with like an ERA
of two and win the Cy Young.
Speaker 3 (01:29:32):
Well it's funny because I think.
Speaker 1 (01:29:33):
One year Non Ryan won the ERA title and I
want to say he had a wreck and a record
of about five hundred. Yeah, that can happen. Somebody was
actually bringing it up. I saw it on Twitter earlier today,
the two thousand and four National League Cy Young Award.
Do you remember who won that? Matt no clue, You
do have a clue. Roger Clemens? Oh yeah, Roger Clemmons,
(01:29:56):
Well he was eighteen and four. Randyjohnson was sixteen and fourteen.
Every other category Randy Johnson blew away Roger Clemens. So
wins do matter that they did dwell twenty one years ago.
I think I still would today, not as much. Although
you had who was the was it Nick Pavetta? Who
(01:30:17):
was the Red Sox pitcher who got like thirty wins
and won the sil even though he didn't deserve it.
I'm telling you, if you take pitcher A and pitcher
B of the same numbers, now you may be closer. Ross.
I still think wins. It's going to be flashier to
say eighteen and four. Especially first of all, who wins
eighteen games in Big league baseball anymore? Nobody?
Speaker 3 (01:30:34):
Nobody except Brown He's got eight I think these days.
Speaker 1 (01:30:38):
No but Roger Clemens was behind in basically every other
category era whips, strikeouts, strike up percentage, walk percentage, everything.
By the way, congratulations in the Colorado Rockies. They won
their tenth game of the season yesterday, knocking off the
Marlins in Miami. Good for him, them, them, them, tire Grood,
Good for them. Rick port Cellos, who I was thinking
(01:31:01):
for he didn't win. How many games did he win? Nick,
I'm sorry, I'm in my own work. I was gonna say,
it's just involving the news at noon or No, I
was trying to look something up. It it feels like confusion.
At noon, well, I was trying to see how many
games he won. Oh, he went twenty two and four.
It wasn't anywhere close to to so one. Last thirty
winner thirty game winner in baseball was Denny McLean. That
(01:31:24):
is correct. I just saw it when I looked googled
thirty sucks. Just googled thirty terrible embarrassed for us. Well,
I didn't know it. I did good. I'm proud of you, Matt,
thank you, And that's your news at noon. No mention
of the Kevin Durant whispers that are out there. No, okay,
but who's reporting that, Kelly Eco of the ecosystem that
(01:31:47):
maybe the conversations have ramped up a little bit with
a lot of teams, including the Houston Rockets for and
maybe the asking price for one the Durantla is significantly less.
I wonder if he joins the Rockets, can I call
him Durrantle or does he find that offensive? He doesn't
like slim Reaper? I would how he feels about the
the Rantla. How about easy money Sniper. It's kind of
(01:32:09):
kind a wordy, but that was his that's his Twitter handler.
Speaker 6 (01:32:11):
It was.
Speaker 1 (01:32:13):
Well on Israel account or one of the burners he has.
He's on his real account now he's off the burner life.
He comes at people on his regular account on Maine.
As the kids say, do you know that if he
comes here I will be in awe of him. He's
one of the greatest players of all time, absolutely, and
I will be blessed to have him on a team
like this. Now again, I'm not saying it's fifty fifty.
I'm not saying it's seventy five twenty five. I'm saying
(01:32:34):
it's not ten percent. I'm just saying that I've been lucky.
I mean, I've called on my own team some of
the greatest I mean, say what you about Chris Paul
and never want in a championship, one of the greatest
point guards ever to play the game, ever, ever, ever,
Russell Westbrook, one of the greatest players ever to play
the game. James Harden, one of the greatest players ever
play the game periods I'm missing that didn't never won
(01:32:58):
one that I've called their games as a rocket, Paul Westbrook, Harden,
anybody else that would you would say is super elite? Great? No, Okay,
so I've done pretty good. Three well, Skitch Jochi, No,
no Jochi, no Jochi, No. Ryan Anderson oho oh, Robert
(01:33:21):
Covington eg for three, Eric Gordon great, one of the
all time six men. Six month of the year all right,
uh bottom of the hour. Joe A spotted with his

Now back to Matt Thomas and Ross via Real One
Sports Talk seven NY.
Speaker 1 (01:35:54):
So we have on MLB network in our studios here
and it was weird. They're playing a game from last Friday,
and I'm like, who the hell would watch that? Well,
MLB on Fox just put out a release on their
Twitter account. They had the game on Saturday, and they
(01:36:15):
brought out the heavy hitters. They brought out their main
pregame show, you know a Rod and the Big Poppy
and Derek Jeter. They did the show from Dodgers Stadium,
and that was the game I think the Dodgers killed
the Yankees. He was an eighteen to two game in
which the Dodgers beat the Yankees. On last Saturday, they
(01:36:38):
had two point two million viewers for a Saturday night game,
up sixteen percent, and that was going against a NBA
playoff game. Wow, it is incredible to me. Nah, it
should be incredible. It's been this way all our lives.
The power of New York and LA Sports franchise. You
(01:37:03):
put on the two most iconic baseball teams in Major
League Baseball, right, I mean it's kind of safe to say, right,
and probably the two best teams in baseball, and in
two of the most iconic tiports franchise in sports. And
you're gonna get two million people. You're thinking, well, that's nothing. Well,
I mean, my guest is on a Saturday night for
a Rando MLB game featuring let's say, the Rangers and
(01:37:25):
the who's a good Tigers? Who brought up Tigers? It
may that may be lucky to have a million people watching.
You know what I'm saying. It's that's that shows you
the power of those markets, those good teams and that's
why you see them on national TV every other day.
Speaker 6 (01:37:40):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:37:40):
Then, and baseball knows that the diehards are going to
be there, they're going to watch in. What they're trying
to do is bring in the casual fans, bring in
new fans. So that's why we always talk about, oh,
why is it always this team and that team? And
because they're trying to keep casuals in the game and
trying to try to attract more people would like to
guess with this week's Sunday Night Game of the week
as an ESPN you get one one guess and one
(01:38:00):
guest Yankees and Red Sox. There you go, bingo, all right.
They like ratings because the ratings being advertising dollars, which
brings money all makes put it this way there, there
there may be people that don't watch Sunday Night baseball
period because they're out there getting there stuff ready for
work the next day, or they're hanging with their family.
(01:38:22):
They're hoping that those two large fan bases watch and
that any casuals you talk as you described, who's just
flipping the channel on a regular day, if it's if
it's Royals Orioles, I'll get past it. If it's Red
Sox Yankees, there's probably be some sort of drama. It's
too that it's the biggest rivalry in baseball. Yeah, I'll
put it on for a little bit. It's got cachet.
(01:38:44):
It just does. And that's why you see the Astros
play at noon and one o'clock on most playoff games
because they just don't. Even with them winning all the
World Series and all the playoff appearances, the Astros just
didn't carry national cachet. And as I've told you folks before,
you shouldn't worry about it now. I know people get
cranky that they don't get to watch their games in primetime.
(01:39:04):
I've got great news for you this year. If the
Astros make it to the playoffs, which I believe they're
going to, if they win the division, they will be
either a two seed or a three seed. I don't
know if Detroit's going to relinquish the top right of
the American League, although the Yankees may surprobably wouldn't say
(01:39:25):
they're going to be the third seed. I don't think
they would pass whatever. Whoever wins the American League, probably
the Yankees or the Tigers. So if they're the third seed.
They would then take out they would be in the
wild card, correct, and they would then take on whom
in the division series the number two seed? Yeah, in
the division series? Right who's the number two seed in
(01:39:45):
the American League right now? Right now? It's the Yankees.
So guess what you get to do in the division series?
You get to watch your Astros and your Yankees in
prime time because the Yankees are going to ride the
coattails of the Yankees and be in primetime. Yeah. But
the Astros do have a higher profile than they used to.
I mean, they're many many, obviously many more national games
than they used to be. That's one way to raise
your profile if you're not going to be in New
(01:40:06):
York or LA is to win. Yep, And they've done that,
and they they have raised their profile. But it's incredible
that the national New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago perspective
plays very well in the NBA, it plays very well
in Major League Baseball, but we don't care about those
(01:40:28):
teams in those markets. In the NFL, the Rams don't
get any more national games because LA the Chargers certainly don't.
The Giants and Jets have been largely disasters. Chicago doesn't
carry any national cache. I mean, think about the team.
The two teams, in my opinion, I'm not talking about
(01:40:49):
the last ten years. I'm talking about the last forty
fifty years. In my opinion, the two teams that carry
the most cache. Three teams, I should say, the Niners,
the Steelers, and the Packers. And two of those three
are in incredibly mid size to small Cowboys. Oh, excuse me,
to Cowboys. But that's Dallas. I could hear the Cowboys
(01:41:12):
sans Yellen. I'm sorry, that's my I'm saying. I totally
forgot the Dallas. But Dallas is in Chicago, Dallas, Dallas
is Houston. Basically, Yeah, I think you also have more
parody in that league so you can have more winning.
I mean the dynasties all over the place, like in
Kansas City right now. What number of media market is
Kansas City twenty? Because you have a hard cat league.
(01:41:34):
It comes to me, it always comes back to hardcat league.
Love it. Yeah, So I just thought I was curious
that the ratings for the Dodgers Yankees were probably double
or three times will normally be for just a Rando
late May game yeah, and also helps that they're both
teams are very good. Joe's spotting giant payrolls. It's true.
Joe's spot is up next twelve to twenty eight. Sports
Talk seven ninety twelve thirty two. It is the Matt
(01:41:58):
Thomas Show with Ross. We're gonna spend ten calling him inutes.
Now with the manager of your Houston Astros joining us
from Pittsburgh, PA Astros and the Pirates started three games series.
Joe spotted with us here on seven. I skip, good afternoon,
thanks for joining us. What a bizarre series. The run
differential not pretty, the wins and losses you'll take right, yes,
(01:42:18):
and I take that. Uh, how does you how do
you explain it? I mean you can always go to
the cliche that's baseball, But my goodness, you had two games,
nail biders, had two games. You wanted to close your
eyes about the sixth inning.
Speaker 2 (01:42:34):
Well, you know, it's baseball. You know we try to
you know that, well, you try to win series. And
you know we we came out with a split against
the Race, a team that's won the bats really well
a little bit different than when we saw on the
previous week. So you know, we we we're hung in there.
(01:42:55):
I thought those two games that we won, you know,
we pitched really well. The others things kind of got
away from us, but you know, you're trying to win series.
We had a great homestand and and and that's all
you can control. And now we're here in Pittsburgh after
an update. Boys are fresh from ready to go.
Speaker 1 (01:43:11):
Did you pull those starters on those days? You know
we're talking about Hunter and fromber to say, hey not.
You always expect them to go deep in games, but
do you even pull them aside and say, hey, I
may need you for a little bit more because the
Bullpens got beat up the night before.
Speaker 2 (01:43:25):
No, I think those two guys know exactly what we
need out of them. I don't think they need to
hear from me. I think they're watching the games. They
see the situation that we are in. They know that
the leaders of our rotation and there I expect them
to step up. And that's exactly what they did.
Speaker 1 (01:43:38):
Uh, Joe, Obviously the word about Jordan was disappointing. Tell
us just your natural reaction, not only as a manager
to him, but as a friend, I'm sure, and a
guy that you've watched to see his courage is blossom.
When you found out that about the fracture, was that
just ah, that was a hit of the gut. Basically,
don't you be.
Speaker 6 (01:43:57):
Safe to say, yeah, it sucks.
Speaker 2 (01:43:59):
That's you know, not only as he's a manager, but
as someone who you know, I care for your done,
I know, I know you're down for a very long time.
He's someone who wants to be on the field, wants
to contribute for these team, wants to post that. He
knows the importance of his presence in our lineup, and
he really sucks. So we you know, we we want
to get him back. We will get him back. But
(01:44:21):
when we heard about that, it's definitely a punch in
the gut. But yeah, we we need to continue to
move forward and and you know, expect some of these
guys to step up while he's on the sideline, but
definitely someone that we we need, we miss and once
we get him back, we're gonna really we're going to
be really excited to have him back.
Speaker 3 (01:44:39):
What are the next steps for him? Is it just
a waiting game for him to heal.
Speaker 2 (01:44:44):
Yeah, we're going to wait for it to heal, and
hopefully once he heals, we we will never have to
deal with with that pain again.
Speaker 3 (01:44:51):
Do you think, I'm sorry?
Speaker 1 (01:44:53):
Do you think that athletes and they're all built differently, Joe,
You got some guys will fight through pain and you
respect that, but then you have other guys that are like,
shouldn't be fighting through it? How often do you deal
with that in your entire life of baseball? Freaking about
your time with the Astros.
Speaker 2 (01:45:07):
What is it like?
Speaker 1 (01:45:07):
Maybe you as a player felt the same way. You
know what, My hammi's a little tender, but I want
to get out there. What's the battle? What's the proper
medium to go? You know what? Trying to fight through it,
but at a certain time and sometimes you say, yeah,
maybe a day offer too, or maybe going to see
a doctor wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.
Speaker 2 (01:45:24):
You know what My experience is, especially with our players here,
has been this guys don't want to be in the fight.
Speaker 6 (01:45:30):
This guy's we have.
Speaker 2 (01:45:32):
Played so many games for so many years, We have
played more games than any other team in the Big
League for a long time, last seventy years, that this
guy's play through pain. They know the importance of playing
and grinding through pain, and Giordani is one of those
players that loves to post and he wants to be
out there. When an injury in a hand happens to
(01:45:55):
a baseball player, it's very difficult.
Speaker 6 (01:45:58):
It's very very difficult since you need you know.
Speaker 2 (01:46:02):
Your hands, and you need to create power and you
need to create barrel to ball execution. And when you
don't have that, you suffer from that. It's really hard
for you to perform. But I've never you know, my
group here, when these guys are not feeling well, there's
something wrong with it for them not to post it,
(01:46:22):
for them not to show our fans and the rest
of their teammates that they want to be out there.
Speaker 1 (01:46:28):
Yeah, And what is that like for you a manager
dealing with where like you said, the guys want to
play through it, but you don't want guys to get
heard just as you and trying to say like who
do you go to or lean on or run like
to say, hey, maybe we need to talk more about this.
Speaker 2 (01:46:43):
Yeah, you know.
Speaker 6 (01:46:44):
And and I listen to our players and once they
get to a point where.
Speaker 2 (01:46:47):
We need to so sit down and rest and to
let these heal.
Speaker 6 (01:46:52):
We have to do that if we want to get
the player.
Speaker 2 (01:46:56):
And sometimes you got to reset, You got to take
a moment and and you know, understand the length of
our of the season, and you know, it's it's always difficult.
You don't want to lose any player, especially someone as as.
Speaker 6 (01:47:10):
A caliber of Jordan Alvarez.
Speaker 1 (01:47:12):
But we we'll get him back.
Speaker 6 (01:47:13):
We're excited that once we get him back, we're going
to be excited to have him back. And you know,
hopefully we.
Speaker 2 (01:47:19):
Don't have to deal with this again, so we could
keep him in there for a long run.
Speaker 1 (01:47:22):
Skip, you've got two new outfielders. How are you going
to balance? And I guess it's just you know, how
guys are feeling or how the bats are moving. But
you've got two new guys out there. How much do
you want to get him in play rotation? What what's
the game plan at least for the two new year
new players that have come up from the Space Cowboys. Well,
you know one of them is it's an outfielder.
Speaker 6 (01:47:41):
You know, we come has play outfield.
Speaker 2 (01:47:43):
He's also someone that could play in field, so he
does provide that versatility and and you know somebody you know,
like like Melton who could play all three. It's got
the speed and and and the athleticism to be above
average outfielder at dimensionalleague level. Also, he's been swinging back
really well on Triple A, so is with them. So
(01:48:05):
I'm gont to, you know, find find opportunities for them
to play and and you know, for them just to
for continue to develop them players that we've been excited
about them for a long time.
Speaker 6 (01:48:16):
So you know, I'm gonna find spots for them, trying
to get.
Speaker 2 (01:48:21):
Them involved in in in our offense and defense and
and see where.
Speaker 6 (01:48:26):
Where it takes us.
Speaker 1 (01:48:28):
Also, you got Paul Skeens going tonight for the Pirates.
And I don't know how you feel about this interleague play,
but it gives you an opportunity to see everybody at
least once a year, and sometimes you can miss guys
to their rotation how much. And obviously your hitters are
doing a little bit of advanced But when you're on
the plane just relaxing, and do you do you put
a video on to kind of see what he's all about?
Or does the highlights you see on the network TVs
(01:48:49):
kind of give you a pretty indication of how great
he is?
Speaker 2 (01:48:52):
No, we we we we you know, I like to
watch the videos and I like to read the reports,
you know, to go deep under the hood and make
sure you know, see what what he's you know, what
he's doing and how he's performing, and how that's going
to match up against us. And we're looking for ways
to you know, create a plan against them. You know,
(01:49:12):
last year we we had a pretty decent plan and
and and and you know, it's hard to score a
ton of runs of him, but we got to find
a way to you know, attack and and and hopefully
you know, you build his uh his pitch counch up
trying to get in the bullpen.
Speaker 6 (01:49:28):
You know, our strategy, which is.
Speaker 2 (01:49:30):
Trying to grind our bats, trying to attack our zones
and and be aggressive. He's a guy that throws a
ton of stripes, but he's definitely one of the best
starters in the game. But we'll put together a good
plan against not only him, but against their whole entire
uh staff.
Speaker 1 (01:49:45):
Is it a situation where maybe you want to play
a little bit more small ball or do you want
guys to kind of just go out there no matter
who's on the mound and do their thing.
Speaker 6 (01:49:53):
We're going to just go through it and be who
we are.
Speaker 2 (01:49:56):
You know, we're going to you know, drive the ball,
slug you know, if we we've got opportunities to walk,
we'll do that.
Speaker 6 (01:50:04):
I don't think we're going to change who we are
just because of who's on the mound. I think we
have the horsepower to you know, drive and slug and.
Speaker 2 (01:50:13):
Steal bases and splice small bolts we have to against
any against any pitcher in the league.
Speaker 1 (01:50:18):
Do you, as a manager bite your fingernails more in
a two to one game or a game that becomes
a slug fest? Ninety eight? I don't know think I've
ever asked you that, But I'm as curious as you
as you manage your as you work your way through
a game, what what gives you the most gray hairs?
Speaker 2 (01:50:36):
I don't, I don't, I don't have never thought about that, Matt.
You know I don't try not to eat my nails.
Speaker 6 (01:50:41):
I know that I have a ton of confidence I'm
trying to I have.
Speaker 2 (01:50:45):
I have a ton of confidence on our team, and
you know, I let the process play out, and you
know we are prepared to, you know, face anything doing
a game, so you know, biting the.
Speaker 6 (01:50:57):
Nails or you know, I don't never really thought about.
Speaker 1 (01:51:00):
Any of that all right, Well, hose al tuo ba
bites and nails and that's worked out for everyone. Yeah,
I think he does.
Speaker 3 (01:51:06):
Hi, Yeah, Jose is uh.
Speaker 1 (01:51:08):
The bats really looking good and we've talked about this
a couple of weeks in a row now and it
feels like whether it was a film session, whether it's
some time away with your coaches, whatever the case would be,
it's it's the old al Altube and not the the
early season L two B was dropping off considerably, but
his bat the last month or so has been significantly improved.
Speaker 2 (01:51:27):
Yeah, and you know it's it's just sometimes we forget
that we have to be patient. We you know, we
and we want to see him produc him from dayn
Noumbo one. Sometimes he takes a little bit of time
for for the swing to get there and for the
timing to arrive, and uh, you know it's just once
when he gets there, he's he's going to be explosive,
(01:51:47):
he's going to be a force, and once he gets going,
our offense is a completely different, completely different offense. I
think he has made some adjustments not only on his
swing mechanics but also and he's picked selection, which for me.
Speaker 6 (01:51:59):
Is the for his success.
Speaker 1 (01:52:01):
And again, I love the fact that Keratini is getting
some playing time, whether you put him at first a
little bit d hing and catching and uh, what kind
of conversations.
Speaker 3 (01:52:10):
And this is for any backup catcher. He wants to
play as much as he can.
Speaker 1 (01:52:13):
But it feels like you've done a good enough job
of at least keeping that bat in his body active
during this time.
Speaker 2 (01:52:19):
Yeah, and you know he provides It gives us and
an opportunity to give some of the guys, some of the.
Speaker 1 (01:52:25):
Guys, uh, you know, a breather. And and he's a
threat when he's on on the.
Speaker 6 (01:52:30):
Bench coming up the bat, uh, the pinch shoter. You know.
Speaker 2 (01:52:34):
Also you know, when I have a right hander pitcher
who their splits are significant, you know, having Cartini from
the left side in there is also valuable. But for me,
the Keratini, Uh, it's the his professionalism, his preparation, his
quality of play every time he's on the field.
Speaker 6 (01:52:54):
And and I and I like that. I think he's
valuable for for us.
Speaker 2 (01:52:57):
As a club to have someone who can grind up bats,
who's going to compete, and it gives you the flexibility
hitting from both sides of the plate.
Speaker 6 (01:53:05):
So he's been a really good player for us.
Speaker 1 (01:53:08):
And last question, if I had told you a year
ago that you were going to get six innings and
twelve strikeouts from Lance mcculors, you'd have said, okay, that
that sounds about right. But there was a lot of
apprehension about whether what his return was going to be.
But to see him not only give you better work
every fifth day or sixth day in some cases, but
I felt like those the conversations have to be really
good the day after when you check on Lance, how
(01:53:29):
you feeling. And obviously he's been feeling a lot better
the last to two or three starts.
Speaker 6 (01:53:33):
Yeah, he's been feeling great.
Speaker 2 (01:53:34):
And if you would have told me a year ago
that I was going to get six innings twelve punch
outs at a linements called, I will not be surprised
at all. You know, watching him work, watching him getting ready,
you know, I knew that once he's healthy, he's a
great picture.
Speaker 15 (01:53:47):
He is.
Speaker 2 (01:53:47):
He's been a really good picture when he's been on
the mound for us in good health. So he's healthy now,
he's bouncing back really well. His bullpen sessions are great,
his preparations are you know, with our with our pitching
coaches preparing for his next outings have been you know
on Q so I expect him to be good for
(01:54:07):
a long run and we need him to.
Speaker 6 (01:54:09):
We need him to uh.
Speaker 2 (01:54:10):
Provide some of that leadership that I've seen out of
him in the past. And he's excited and he's ready
to do just that.
Speaker 1 (01:54:16):
Thanks for the visitors always, best of luck on this
road trip again and we'll talk next week. And we
thank you for the visitors always.
Speaker 6 (01:54:22):
Ahi guys, Thanks you.
Speaker 1 (01:54:23):
Joe spotted with us from Pittsburgh Astros and Pirates, mccolors
and schemes in the mound. Matchup on Deck begins today
at five thirty. It's a five forty first pitch from Pittsburgh.
Should be great. I heard of the match. I would
hope so pictures dual one nothing game two hours in,
not six minutes. Who's doing the post game show? I
(01:54:44):
don't know, maybe Dan. It was Dane.
Speaker 3 (01:54:46):
I let him go fourteen to fifteen innings.
Speaker 1 (01:54:48):
Now, why he's rude? He's got to get up at
six in the morning. It's not that tough man. You
just pray on everyone's download, don't you. I mean, yeah,
you know what you know what. I was disappointed to
hear you were slandering my instagram when I was out. Uh,
that's I don't know if that's true either. That's Jimmy
and Tomball just trying to get in your good graces.
He is my good graces. That's terrible. We will talk
(01:55:11):
about General Sorenus coming up in about ten minutes from now.
How's your wrestling name? Wasn't it?
Speaker 11 (01:55:19):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (01:55:20):
You know what it was.
Speaker 3 (01:55:21):
It's also a name that I use when I go
to hotels around the NBA.
Speaker 1 (01:55:24):
Okay, you don't want to find me, Uh, you can
find uh me under the name General Sotnesslo. I've also
used Pablo Escobar. Oh that that should raise a red flag.
Didn't El Chappo use that one too? Seymour Rex Oh okay,
well when you said Seymour, I got a little worried
(01:55:44):
for what that You're gonna say something like Seymour cheeks
or something?
Speaker 11 (01:55:49):
No?
Speaker 1 (01:55:49):
All right, so again, Uh, thank you to Joe Spotted
for joining us, and we will have update on the
Texans coming up in about eight minutes from now. It
is day number three of at least the media portion
of ot s. They have ot s, but they just
sometimes don't want the media in. And that's fine, that's fine.
It's ot. It's June.
Speaker 3 (01:56:08):
It's June, three months away from the season. Could you
imagine if we.
Speaker 1 (01:56:12):
Had spring training breakdowns like we have useless Texans practice breakdowns? Wait,
we do? Who does that? I mean there's but there
are three guys that do it because they're they're they're
down there for six weeks this one. You got every
TV station. You've got some legitimate members of the media there.
(01:56:33):
You got some people that think they're media that they're
not there. I mean, it's a mess. Steph Stradley always
sends me tweets about what she sees and let me
see it. So I retweeted for her. Oh that's good,
that's nice. That's what I do. I'm a giver. I'm
a retweeter occasional. Yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 6 (01:56:52):
It's just I can't.
Speaker 11 (01:56:55):
I can't.
Speaker 1 (01:56:55):
I can't make a lot of I call it to
this show with a Lansma Colors Bullpen update Live from
the from the side fields. Did that's oh, that's right,
you did. Well what happened when you did that? We
were oh, yeah, you were just saying he's throwing We
made a big deal out of it. That's what we
(01:57:16):
do here, make big deals out of the big news stories.
And then you got worried. I said he was grabbing
his elbow, but I said, no, you basically slapping a mosquito.
And then somebody put on Twitter and then they tag Astros. Yeah,
it was a joke. That's funny. Nobody got in trouble though,
so we're all good. Nobody got in trouble. By the way,
we should tell you know, for those that don't know
(01:57:37):
that Ross is a huge University of Texas fan. I
didn't even realize what the shirt you're wearing to what's
the problem. You're wearing the men's twenty nineteen n I
T champions basketball T shirt. That's like, that's not getting
a participant ribbon. No, it's not probably wearing his championship. No,
(01:57:58):
it's not. You were the sixty seventh best team cha
mp IO NS champions. Arkansas Pine Bluff is better than
you in the eyes of the No. Yeah, they made
the field of sixteen and it champion the People's champ
It's not about all this. Oh, let's see how much
money we can make from state farm in Capitol One. No,
it's about the people. It's at the mecca of basketball
(01:58:19):
at Madison Square Garden. It's the people's championship, the n IT.
You should be highly embarrassed you're wearing that. No, I'm
not what a great season that was. First of all,
that you have a shirt, that old T shirt that
is that worn out and old that the vibrant used
to be burn orange now is just barely orange vintage.
Speaker 3 (01:58:40):
Now, then I would you know what? Then put it
in a frame and sell it.
Speaker 1 (01:58:43):
We'll say what you get for it, how much you
can get for a Rossfield Areal twenty nineteen thirty times
worn an IT Championship. I will not forget the longhorned
legends who led this, led by Shaka Smart to the
twenty nineteen and IT champion. And that was just the
start of something. And what happened after twenty nine too,
I can't remember. I think Smart got fired. That's how
you're an AT champion. Sure, Chris Beard came in, got
(01:59:05):
into a domestic incident. Then Rodney Terry got fired. Now
we're good. God, you've got a lot of coaches. Yeah,
Sean Miller's good. Yeah, Sean Miller is great. He's not
my favorite Miller though his brother Archie's the coach at
Hode Island. I thought I'd go Steve Steve Miller. Yeah,
he was rocking your baby, yes, and he was also
flying like a fuzzy and he all right, I'm gonna
(01:59:32):
say a little underrated. They had some hits now, Maddie,
but I love this show. I'm sorry, fly like take
the money and run jet airliner. Yeah, I mean he
can fill up a Cynthia Woods. They're at the They're
at the mock Mount Casino, and that Ville can do
(01:59:55):
the casino route. It's funny you bring this up because
last night, you know, I wake up a middle night
and can't sleep, so I always think of trying to
create lists to help me fall asleep. Okay, I was
thinking of because Bob's secret about a month ago turned
eighty and he's he's retired and everything. Uh huh. I
was thinking about if I went to go see Bob
(02:00:17):
Seeker in concert, how many songs could he give me?
The full And I've seen Bob Seer in concert one
time before. How how many hits could he give me
in a concert? And I was thinking it's probably eight
to ten. Are we doing this now real quick, old
time rock and roll, Old time rock and roll, shake down,
Turn the page, turn the page. Hollywood Knights, Hollywood Knights. Okay,
(02:00:43):
now I'm gonna get the list. Against the Wind, night
moves six like a rock seven, still the same eight,
blaming on the Moon, the Moon and gambling Man ten.
Speaker 3 (02:00:55):
Bob Seer got some hits, now, Baddy, that's.
Speaker 1 (02:00:57):
You know what I'm gonna tell you right now. Bob
Seger underrated, underrated, I'm underrated. Got a little bit of
soul when he's belting out. Turned the page. Tell me
you don't crank that bad. We're still telling you. In
the history of going to concerts, the lawest concert ever
been to was to see Bob see your ears are
still ringing? They absolutely are. And the amount of we
that was smoking and then Summit back then, I mean,
I think I'm still in a contact copious amounts lots
(02:01:20):
of that.
Speaker 3 (02:01:20):
All right, So did CJ. Stroud throw at Texans practice?
Speaker 1 (02:01:25):
Today? We'll get to that. Astro starting a weekends week
series three games against the hated Pittsburgh Pirates in Pittsburgh
with Paul Skeins.
Speaker 3 (02:01:33):
He's believed it or not today? And is there a
little bit of.
Speaker 1 (02:01:40):
More flexibility from the Phoenix Suns when it comes to
maybe moving their star player, and we're not talking about
Devin Booker. Seven one three two one two five seven
ninety seven one three two one two five seven ninety.
It's twelve fifty eight here on the Matt Thomas Show
at ROSS. We thank you for listening to Sports Talk
seven ninety. We have the NFL rewind coming up bit
about twenty minutes. What's happening around the National Football League.
(02:02:03):
But we've got some local stuff to get too as
we walkome you to the final hour of the Matt
Thomas Show with Ross. Seven to one three two one
two five, seven ninety If you want to join our conversation,
that's seven to one to three two one two five
seveninti Astros and Pirates start a three game set. We've
got some NBA trade rumors that are out there that
we'll get to a little bit later, and we'll do
(02:02:24):
that at one thirty. Right now, the Texans media approved
Ota visit today and we sent in, let's let's be
honest here, we we cover the Texans better than anybody
else in time.
Speaker 3 (02:02:39):
I mean it's not even close. I think we talk
about them the most too. We we no other team.
Speaker 1 (02:02:43):
I don't think any other station tally will brings them up.
I mean that's fine, and we can do different things
that other people aren't doing. We do talk astros, we
do talk about rockets, talk college talk, but really, where
our our bread and butter is getting you the information
of the twenty nineteen n I t occasionally we'll tell
oka very with the Women's College Baseball Softball World Series Horns.
(02:03:04):
Let's go. But let's get to the news today, which
is again, did c J Stroud throw it at practice? Oh?
Anybody computer up? And Ross is gonna handle the audio
for this and he's gonna give you the news, all right,
what you got? First off?
Speaker 12 (02:03:17):
I know everybody's gonna ask first, CJ not throwing again,
It's no concerns with CJ's just general soreness. We're taking
extra precaution with him, but he'll be good to go.
No concerns on my end.
Speaker 1 (02:03:28):
There, Uh uh, that's it. There you go, Thank you, Tomko.
No concerns. It's all good and Tomiko, I believe it
to be one hundred percent accurate. I'm with you, Ben
for the Dad goes to them benefit of the doubt
does go. He also was asked about a timeline for CJ.
(02:03:49):
Stroud and his shoulder injury.
Speaker 12 (02:03:52):
For CJ, it'll be, like I said, he has general
soreness and we're just taking extra recosting with him.
Speaker 1 (02:03:57):
When he's ready to go, he'll be ready to go.
Speaker 12 (02:03:59):
That is it for CJ. On the question, that's it,
But I said, that's it for him like his general
sword is. We're taking extra precaution with him. We're not
gonna rush him into anything. He'll be fine when at
the moment is for him to be ready to go,
he'll be ready to go.
Speaker 3 (02:04:15):
So that was don't ask me anymore. I'm gonna start
getting pissed.
Speaker 1 (02:04:19):
Yes, he said, if you want to get headbutted, ask me,
ask me one more CJ. Stroud question, If you want
to get hit in the mid section, ask me one
more question. He's gonna go back to his middle linebacker days. Yeah,
He's gonna use his shoulder places you can't just can't use.
To the top of the crown of the hell, that's true.
I just want to get flagged, you know. I mean,
here's the reality. There is not another storyline that anybody
(02:04:45):
cares about na. Shouldn't anybody that most people care about
then the health of the franchise quarterback.
Speaker 3 (02:04:51):
It's so so you know, Demiko, it is what it is.
You're gonna have to just sit and take the questions.
Speaker 1 (02:04:57):
Yeah, but if they do get redundant, I mean, I
unders say why he would get frustrated. It's also probable.
We don't know, We'll figure it out. It's nine degrees
outside there. Probably he's probably got a little bit of
a short refuse that if it was at a casual
lunch experience. So, I mean, it's fine, but it's gonna
get amplified if he's not available come MANI camp, which
(02:05:18):
is in later the month, and for now, benefit of
the doubt. Unfortunately, the Astros right now don't get the
benefit of the doubt, and that could have obviously change.
There could be ian there could be a certain point
that Jim Crane's like, you know what, we gotta we
got we gotta get rid of this stigma of us
not being more forthcoming with our injuries. But until that happens,
we've been kind of burned. Yeah, we've been burned, but
(02:05:40):
it's it's relative. It's not like it's it's It's not
going to change my fandom or how I think about
the team, and they're what their future progress is. I
do have to wonder about the returning to play and
players getting injured from it because it happened to Jordon.
We talked about it with Jake Myers. I don't know.
I guess it was a different situation with Kyle Tucker.
But it just seems like it's something that's pop up
a couple of times. Yeah, all right, back to the Texans.
(02:06:02):
Oh yes, how about Christian Kirk, Matt, you be drafting
in your fantasy league?
Speaker 3 (02:06:08):
No, I'm not playing fancy this year, so no, nope,
come on, Jonathan's taking my spot.
Speaker 1 (02:06:12):
All right, Well, he's gonna have to take out a loan.
We'll figure something out. Christian Kirk, one of the newest
Houston Texans, talks about the Houston Texans identity.
Speaker 18 (02:06:23):
Just being in the building, you know, these past couple months.
Makes sense why they've won the division the past two years,
just with what Domico has done and the culture and
the foundation and the standard everybody comes to work here,
and especially this year. From day one, he's he's laid
it out that you know, our goal is to, you know,
put a ball in the face of that ring.
Speaker 1 (02:06:42):
And I love that, loves the culture, culture of winning
here the Houston Texans. I mean, he's anybody who's got
his asking more about the Texans, it's probably been Christian Kirk.
Well maybe he's been hurt for some of those games too.
Hopefully been nice and healthy next year. How many what
you know, I'll look at as you play tomorrow. I'm
afraid to see how many games Christian Kirk has missed
(02:07:04):
over the last hand. He's been fine. I'm okay.
Speaker 3 (02:07:08):
The last couple of years, he's missed some games.
Speaker 1 (02:07:09):
But it's the NFL.
Speaker 3 (02:07:11):
Everybody gets hurt. It's only twenty eight.
Speaker 1 (02:07:13):
Yeah, he's young. I think it's a good pickup for
the for the Texans. Continue on all right, fine, comar
last that a transitioning into year two for the Houston Texans.
To be honest, we've here all day.
Speaker 19 (02:07:26):
If I wanted to tell you every single thing that
I'm trying to work on, but it's just to be honest,
I just want to become a better player, like just
inside and out from understanding what's going on pre snap
understanding office is better understanding where my help is better,
just understanding right recognition, or just doing the little things
that can make me more successful watching other players play.
It's a lot of things that I really want to
work on. I can't tell you everything because I'd be
(02:07:48):
here all day.
Speaker 1 (02:07:48):
We should her. Yeah, wants to get better. It's hungry.
It's a dog and a bulldog. By the way. Christian
Kirk's game log eight games last year, okay, twelve the
year before that, that's okay.
Speaker 4 (02:07:59):
In one.
Speaker 1 (02:08:00):
In twenty twenty two, he played a full seventeen great
in twenty twenty he played fourteen, thirteen and twenty nineteen
and twelve and twenty eighteen. So he has missed a
significant amount of time. What do you mean you said
two years before the last two years he played seventeen. Yeah,
but I mean worried about that. He's missed five one year, four,
(02:08:22):
one year, three, one year then zero, zero, zero, five
and nine. That's fine, it's football. Most most players don't
play all seventeen twenty nine career touchdowns. His high watermark
was eight in the twenty twenty two year. I remember
(02:08:44):
he was also playing for Jacksonville. I mean, yeah, I'd
be hurt too if I had a chance to playing Jackson,
give him a break. Yeah. Would you call Nico Collins
injury prone?
Speaker 11 (02:08:52):
No?
Speaker 1 (02:08:53):
He played fourteen, ten, fifteen, and twelve.
Speaker 3 (02:08:56):
Oo ooh, ask that question again.
Speaker 1 (02:09:01):
Would you call Nico Collins injury prone?
Speaker 6 (02:09:06):
Yes?
Speaker 3 (02:09:07):
Oh, all right, well, then predicted how many games are
you playing this year?
Speaker 1 (02:09:13):
Thirteen?
Speaker 5 (02:09:16):
You asked.
Speaker 1 (02:09:16):
I gave you an answer. You weren't satisfied with it. No,
it's just funny, all right, we shall see. You're on
Alvarez injury prone, injury history, injury history, injury history. He
had knee issues, that's something different. He had oblique issue,
that's something different, hand issue. It's a violent swinger. Dang,
it sounds like injured. Fun of me. Oh no, arguing
(02:09:39):
about let's go help me on to knee injury prone.
This is the This is also semantics argument, Jonathan. So
we don't need to do we don't need to drag
do it. We can still do it. We got fifty minutes.
Injury prone means you can predict they're getting injured. A
lot of times. These are guys who are putting their
their uh I mean bodies through so much. Especially I
mean baseball and football violent sports in different ways. Baseball
(02:09:59):
of course, is the long rind of one hundred and
sixty two game season. To me, injury prone means you
can predict this person is about to get hurt. For example,
Kawhi Leonard has a degenerative leg issue, He's gonna get hurt.
It's going to keep coming back. But if the occasional
hamstring or oblique strain, that's not predicted to me. But
I could be wrong. I'm on an island. A lot
of you know you're on an island on this one.
(02:10:19):
In something in respects that, if you said, in the
next five years, do you anticipate or A Avarez playing
one hundred and forty five or more games, that would
mean either no injuries in just days off or a
very short ten day injured list visit.
Speaker 3 (02:10:38):
I could also say, I mean, we don't know, what
if he gets hit on the hand.
Speaker 1 (02:10:41):
What if Kyle Tucker is some of those things he
can't contral exactly, Kyle Tucker gets multiple foul balls off
his leg and he gets a shin fracture. Things happen. Yeah,
so I guess in baseball add more about the types
of injuries and how they occurred. Nobody gave yorda on
a hand injury. He did that to himself. Yeah, Tank,
(02:11:02):
Tank Dale got injured by his own player. It's a
freak accident. But and then before that, he got rolled
up when he shouldn't have been blocking. But the problem
is also in Tank's case, he's with five eight and
one sixty. I mean that you're going against you're on
a You're the smallest player among a bunch of bahamas.
(02:11:22):
And that was the number one thing about Tank to
concerned me about him coming out of college was is
his body frame and weight gonna be able to withstand
the forces of these ginormous, physically strong, gifted NFL players
in two years in It's it's been painful. And he's
not gonna play this year either. So well, yeah, I
(02:11:43):
don't want to say his career could be it could
be career threatening. This is correct, but everything is that's
in your knee he tore, yeah, and just yeah, if
he fights back to get back in, good for him.
But there's a chance that he could go on one
practice and wind of turning wrong went rout and boom,
(02:12:05):
he gets hurt again. And his NFL level viability as
a receiver is based on his speed and quickness, which
could a lot of that could be erased, a lot
of his advantage that he does have. All right, so
general soreness is in play. Yes, we will not worry
about it again. Okay until Mini Camp coming up in
a few weeks. What else is happening around the NFL.
We'll find out next as we go around the NFL.
(02:12:26):
It is a trademark segment. Yes, nobody else does this
in the marketplace. Here, we don't. We talk more Texans,
we talk more NFL. I don't know what the other
stations are doing, but you know what, that's why we
hear they're completely doing it in the wrong way. One
thirteen on Sports Talk seven ninety seven one three two
one two five seven nine zero. No other station in
(02:12:47):
the marketplace gives you NFL news and notes like we
do here. On the Matt Thomas Show at Ross, we
call it Ross's NFL rewind. He runs through a few headlines,
We comment, we move forward, and we take this show
to two o'clock where all things, all things Paul skeins
unbelieve or not at one today, Yes, matthe you know
we've been talking about the Texans and OTA's of course
(02:13:09):
we know CJ. Stroud is still handing the ball off,
not throwing Tomiko. Ryan's getting irritated with the media. I
actually want to play that one again, real quick call.
General irritation of General, general soreness and general irritation of
Dimiico ryans with the media and all their c J.
Stroud questions.
Speaker 12 (02:13:29):
It'll be like I said, he has general soreness and
we're just taking extra pcastle with him.
Speaker 1 (02:13:33):
When he's ready to go, he'll be ready to go.
That's it for CJ.
Speaker 12 (02:13:35):
Guys on the question, that's it that but I said,
that's it for him like his general sowredness, and we're
taking extra precaution with him. We're not gonna rush him
into anything. He'll be fine when at the moment is
for him to be ready.
Speaker 1 (02:13:48):
To go, He'll be ready to go. Do we have
the SoundBite from last week when he said it was
a throwing program and it wasn't his day to throw.
I could probably find it because if that's the case,
that that's one of the four lies that U Tomiko
gives daily because the average person lasts four times a day.
Let's see, is this it for all the guys you
(02:14:10):
see here?
Speaker 12 (02:14:11):
Guys, there'll be guys on different schedules, different routines, so
you'll see some guys out, some guys won't be out there,
some guys will be. Some guys will be on different
snapcount different pitch counts. So there's nothing going on right
now within there, guys. Everybody's just on their own schedule. Uh,
we got him, ladies and gentlemen.
Speaker 1 (02:14:32):
You lied. The average person lives four times a day,
and we caught see Janel going on with anybody. Everybody's
different out doing fine. Don't worry about Oh geez, well
I'm concerned. All right. Well, we played some Christian Kirk
(02:14:53):
in the last secon got a little bit more Christian
Kirk for you. Maybe I thought we're doing around the NFL. Yeah,
we arewhere else. We're gonna start here. Then we're gonn
Let's go to Las Vegas runs. What's one quick? Okay,
Ashton Jenton getting ready to run for a thousand yards
mansion jenty gonna be going for forty one yards of
carry about to get hurt. I'll about nine games, all right,
(02:15:13):
really quick, small statue. I did want to play this
Christian Kirk on Nick Kayley, the New Texans offensive coordinator.
Speaker 18 (02:15:20):
Nick is all ball, very intelligent, very smart, does a
great job communicating to us, you know what the expectations are,
route detail, motions, formations, whatever the case may be. Is
done a great job kind of laying that up for us.
This offense is dynamic, a lot of motions, a lot
of pre snap adjustments.
Speaker 1 (02:15:36):
For the defense half to you know, deal with.
Speaker 18 (02:15:38):
So I think you'll see a lot of guys in
different places to be able to make place.
Speaker 1 (02:15:42):
M He's ready to go. Nick Kayley's ready. Christian Kirk
is ready. All right, Matt, we can go around the NFL. Uh.
Let's see. Let's go with the Pittsburgh Steelers. One of
the big offseason targets people have said would be Dolphins
tight in John U. Smith. The Stealers have been engaging
(02:16:04):
in talks to Miami. They're now hosting free agent Gabe
Davis this week as well, searching a for receiving help.
But according to sources and Drew Rosenhaus's agent, I'm sorry
Drew Rosenhuse, who was John Smith's agent, his first choice
is to remain with the Dolphins. Now, the reports are
that a trade is unlikely with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Matt,
(02:16:25):
your thoughts that was just a bunch of rambling. Oh,
I'm sorry about a TJ. Watt update. How about a
Shudor Sanders update. Dion Sanders talks about his son. He
said he was hurt by reports that his son, Shudur Sanders,
was unprepared during pre draft meetings with NFL teams. He
is not buying the validity of them either. It hurt,
(02:16:49):
but the Bible says God uses the foolish things to
confound the wise. There were some foolish stuff that went on,
but that gave them something that they needed. He said
this on the Say What Needs to Be Said podcast
hosted by A Sante Samuel. That podcast will be going
in two weeks, trust me. He said, like the edge
(02:17:11):
that Tom Brady had. It gave them the edge that
you had, give them the edge that I have. So
now I guess Shador Sanders got a chip on his shoulder.
He's ready to thrive with the Cleveland Browns. Deion Sanders
says all that reporting from multiple different reporters that he
was not good in pre draft meetings was foolishness. Matt,
(02:17:32):
so a dad comes to defend his son on the
multiple reports from other front office and other NFL personnel
people that said that this is a guy that is
not worthy of a first or a second, or a
third or a fourth round draft grade. Oh yes, good
for him. It's good to defend your son. Hey, you
can always warp away to defend your child. Matt, m
(02:17:53):
m you know that guy.
Speaker 3 (02:17:55):
I might have done it once or twice myself.
Speaker 1 (02:17:56):
All right, Matt. The Madden NFL twenty cover athlete has
been revealed. Of course, as you know, it is Sequon Barkley. Wait, see,
I always do this. Saquon Barkley will be on the
cover of Madden and FL twenty six, and they used
the iconic photo of him hurtling another player to be
(02:18:17):
on the cover. Your thoughts for the choice of Saquon
Barkley on the cover. I think it absolutely is a
fantastic decision by them because that was the guy that
was sent off because the running back value meant nothing
to a lot of teams, especially the New York Giants
who sent him to a team within the own division.
(02:18:37):
That you know what he did.
Speaker 3 (02:18:38):
You know what Saquon Barkley did. He reinvented the wheel
for running backs.
Speaker 1 (02:18:41):
Ashton genty whoa Ashton genty should thank Sakuon Barkley because
first round running backs were a thing of the past
until this past year. Because a running back position is
growing and maybe we'll see an uptick in salaries for
those running backs. Ooh, I think they're one off, but
we'll see. Matt, it could have. All right, let's well
go through the Madden curse, Matt, do you believe in it? Nope?
(02:19:05):
Last year's cover for Madden twenty five, do you know
who it was? No, Christian McCaffrey. Oh, okay, forget what
I said. Go the year before, year before Josh Allen,
who threw a career high eighteen interceptions. Still say no.
Madden twenty two cover stars were Patrick Mahomes and Tom
(02:19:27):
Brady doing just fine. They both had great seasons. Lamar
Jackson was the twenty twenty cover. He threw twenty six
touchdowns and passed for a thousand yards. Yeah it's a
bit okay, So the Madden curse not real. According to
Matt Thomas, what's the number one curse in sports today?
(02:19:48):
It used to be this the SI cover sports cover curse.
Speaker 6 (02:19:52):
You know what you know?
Speaker 3 (02:19:53):
And this is the God's honest truth.
Speaker 1 (02:19:55):
The Ted cruse.
Speaker 3 (02:19:56):
Ted CRU's attendance curse.
Speaker 1 (02:20:01):
I'm not commenting on that. I am. He was at
my Cougars playing for the national championship, got there in
the second half, we lost.
Speaker 3 (02:20:09):
Curse intact.
Speaker 1 (02:20:10):
Go I'm gonna say that his attendance or presence at
a game does not curse the team for what happens
on the field.
Speaker 3 (02:20:19):
Okay, I hope you're right. So if he shows up
a Texans game, they better win.
Speaker 1 (02:20:26):
I know, yeah, I don't care. It doesn't matter, all right, man,
Let's move along. How about Jon robinson breakout season with
the Atlanta Falcons. He says that he wants to have
a quote Saquon type of season when it comes to explosiveness.
Some people already have him going as number one number
one in the upcoming year's fantasy drafts. Or Jon Robinson
(02:20:49):
the Atlanta Falcons justin Jefferson in that mix, of course,
probably the number one, number one, But I think with
the amount of receivers that are out there these days,
shortage of Bell Cow running backs, Bjeon Robertson could be
running wild for Atlanta. I got one for you. Who
is the first fantasy quarterback taken this year, Lamar Jackson,
(02:21:10):
Josh Allen two, Pat Mahomes three, Joe Burrow four. Pat
Mahomes had a horrible fantasy year. Fantasy year?
Speaker 3 (02:21:22):
Would you take Joe Burrow or Pat Mahomes?
Speaker 1 (02:21:25):
Here are the consensus rankings from fantasy football of fantasypros
dot com. They've got Saquon one, Jamar Chase two, Bijeon three, Okay,
Justin Jefferson for Jimmy or Gibbs five. If you go
to only quarterbacks, Matt Josh Allen is actually first, then
Lamar Jackson, Jayden Daniels three, Jalen Hurts four, Joe Burrow
(02:21:50):
number five. I forgot Jane Daniels. Yeah, he's a beast.
I wonder if he could hit a sophomore slum type
season like CJ. Stroud did. How bad was the slump
in your mind of CJ. Stroud And how much of
that was because of the offensive line? A lot of
it was offensive line. I do believe he wasn't one
hundred percent out there. Just the way that he was
moving did not look good overall.
Speaker 3 (02:22:14):
What did he end up with? Like twenty five touchdowns
and five picks or something like that.
Speaker 1 (02:22:17):
I'm telling you more If that was a sophomore slump,
then CJ is gonna have a very successful NFL career,
because there have been a lot of other quarterbacks that
have had worse slumps in year two than.
Speaker 4 (02:22:26):
To what c J.
Speaker 1 (02:22:27):
Stroude. I had both of those numbers way wrong. Twenty
touchdowns was his first season, was twenty three and five
his second season. That's probably always in my head twenty
and twelve. I mean, it's down, but it's I would
not consider that a slump, just not nearly a productive
That's like a top ten to fifteen guy. We want
him to be a top five guy here in Houston. Well,
(02:22:49):
c J. Stroud be a top five quarterback at any
point this year during the NFL. Yes, you will. That's bad,
good feeling.
Speaker 3 (02:22:55):
Let's go all right? Who will be protecting him? Cam Robinson?
Speaker 6 (02:22:59):
Yes? Go?
Speaker 3 (02:23:02):
H Are you anti Ursery, Blake Fisher?
Speaker 1 (02:23:05):
You get? You can just call them the last three
letters tay tay much easier. It's fun to say, though, Ariante,
what was missus? What's what's his last names? Where did
she find that name? I don't know at all. It
sounds very it sounds stately to me. Arion Ta Hello
from Yorkshire ariontecer. We'll be picking you up at London
(02:23:29):
Gatrickapoult see Arione. Okay, so he runs a shuttle service
from between downtown London and Gatwick. Yes, and well that's
gonna do it for the NFL. Rewind. We have a
couple of astros notes when we come back. Are they
breaking new sounders? No, okay, just general notes. I'm also
(02:23:53):
not gonna answer your first question. All right, two astro
notes that apparently Ross is not a huge fan of.
That is straight ahead one thirty on Sports Talk seven
euty seven one three two one two five seven euty
If you want to jump in again, it's all things
about Paul Skeens. On today's edition of Believe It or Not.
Speaker 3 (02:24:13):
We Hi, I have not looked at Twitter. It's one
thirty six.
Speaker 1 (02:24:18):
It's a Matt Thomas show with Ross and he says
there's a couple of notes that didn't necessarily come across
as good news. So uh and they're not breaking news sounders. Okay,
fire away sports Harvey Well, first off, Forna Blanco will
undergo Tommy John surgery on Friday. Okay, the elbow surgery.
(02:24:42):
That's not a good note. Zach Dezenzo a capsule sprain
in his left hand. Matt, we'll have you explain what
a capsule sprain is very soon. Here, no clue. He
has been quote quote he has been prescribed with rest
and good news. He's scheduled to undergo reimaging in two weeks,
(02:25:05):
so at least they're going to reimage. So where did
you get that from?
Speaker 2 (02:25:09):
Chandler? Um?
Speaker 1 (02:25:11):
Did you look at his comments? Of the replies to reply,
how many are there? Five right now? All right?
Speaker 3 (02:25:19):
And now my guess is one or two of them
are ads? M This all looks like legitimate enough.
Speaker 1 (02:25:25):
All right? What were the responses? This seems uniquely and
pleasantly forthcoming. The astros have a new imaging process. It
appears they listen to your podcast. And another one says
it sounds like they listen to the podcast talking about
Chandler complaining about the lack of transparency with the Astros
and injuries. Okay, there you go, and again, Zach Decenzo
(02:25:55):
doesn't carry the same cachet that obviously Jrdan does, no
or Kyle Tucker for that matter, last year here, But
the fact that they just use capsule sprain instead of
discomfort capsule sprain. That's good. I feel like we have
to go to medical school. Do you think we need
to take like a medical school class for dummies to
do this radio job we have. We need to take
a lot of classes for dummies to do probably so probably,
(02:26:17):
so good.
Speaker 3 (02:26:20):
Thank you very much for the information, and you know
what we're done.
Speaker 1 (02:26:24):
Okay, and then in two weeks you put it. If
you're a Beat reporter, you put it on the calendar.
We'll get back to you in two weeks. A capsule
sprain involves damage to the joint capsule, which is a tough,
fibrous structure that surrounds and supports the joint. Hmmm. Treatment,
(02:26:45):
of course, is the classic Rice method, which I bet
Jonathan knows the Rice method. Go ahead, what's the Rice method? Jonathan? Oh,
he's not listening, Jonathan. Does he have his headphones on? No,
he's talking.
Speaker 3 (02:26:57):
Yeah, he's training some guy back there or something. You
know what the Rice method is, don't you?
Speaker 1 (02:27:02):
The Rice method? Yeah? Like Rice University. No, like dealing
with an injury. Rice method, I guess not. I know
what the r is. It's rest I is ice. Look
at this guy see his compression. Oh my goodness, and
you know that, don't even don't even whatever shout. Definitely
(02:27:29):
you see it in the trainer's room. And that's what
I said. I thought he'd knows is elevation direct. That's
what I'm talking about. How does Matt Thomas the least
athletic person it's uh and seeing athletes since before I
was even an embryo. So that's my answer.
Speaker 3 (02:27:46):
So I've been seeing sports before you were an embryo.
Speaker 1 (02:27:49):
You've been talking to the professional athlete.
Speaker 3 (02:27:50):
Yeah, that's true, you were right age.
Speaker 1 (02:27:54):
Well anyway, so hopefully he's gonna get the rice other
prescription for treatment immobilization body cast. In some cases surgery
may be necessary. Stop don't don't put that out there.
I'm just reading what the Google says. It's funny. Now
(02:28:17):
everybody goes to Grock. Yeah, it's ridiculous. It's a little
it's a little over, it's too much. And of course,
since that's Elon Musk's baby or whatever it's, it's made
like the first reply of every tweet you see. Now,
So now Grock is making a lot of mistakes, not
that I mean it probably always made mistakes, but there's
(02:28:40):
things about the most simplicit things you'd ask about that
are old and dated. We do have some breaking news
on which team it's NBA non Houston, so I would
say one sound, hit one sound, or please he's training
in there. Who's he training?
Speaker 3 (02:28:56):
I don't know what's that guy's name?
Speaker 1 (02:28:58):
I met him. This is Frankie. Frankie seems frank Yes,
frank the neighbors. Beto's cousin's a. It's a Groca Vito Groca,
Vito Brocka Vito. Okay, one breaking new sounder, hit it,
go ahead. Whenever you're writing, is it a second one?
(02:29:26):
You know, let's do to Okay, let's go what you got.
The New York Knicks, yes, are relieving Tom thibo Hit
the sound again.
Speaker 3 (02:29:39):
Hit the third one, hit the third one.
Speaker 1 (02:29:42):
That's three ross. They just one to the Eastern Conference finals.
Seemed like the writing was on the wall though to me, okay,
we'll go three. We just did. It's fine that back
that one. We need to make a Yeah, we're sending
that last one. Yeah, sham sharania. The New York Knicks
(02:30:05):
are relieving Tom Thibodeau of his duties as head coach.
Sources tell ESPN led the Knicks to their first East
Finals in twenty five years, real quick. So after the
Knicks lost Game six of the Pacers, Jalen Brunson was
asked about Bibbs and he was quite perturbed that he
(02:30:28):
was even asked about Tibbs. He says, that's my coach, yes,
and then he ended the press conference. Hmmm. And it
doesn't seem like this would be made, this movie to
be made without the at least consultation. So here's who
lied to us in the last hour, dim Go Ryans
and Jalen Brunson. Jalen Brunson, if he wants Tom Thibodeau
(02:30:51):
as his coach, is the coach? Tell me I'm wrong?
Doesn't ever? Well, not every not every star wants to
keep their coaches, does every coach? Does every player have
to say publicly he wants to keep his coach? Yes,
because John Moran did the same thing with Taylor Jenkins
and John Moran let that go in Memphis. Do players
(02:31:16):
lie about their coaches just to know that they? Hey,
I did everything I could do. You think Nicola Jokic
lied about Michael Malone? Probably? Did James Harden lie about
Jason and Kevin mccal no, He didn't have the fact
you wanted. Kevin McHale, go on, do you know who
the next GM is? You do, Gerson Roses? I think
(02:31:39):
there's somebody above him. Yes, president is Leon Rose the
reason they's been good the last three years?
Speaker 11 (02:31:48):
No, M.
Speaker 1 (02:31:51):
I think in NBA circle, I think it could be
a situation where Tibbs's act and wear a thin He's
very what would you say, grumpy, The grumpiest coach you'll
ever find. He's been fired three times for the same
(02:32:12):
reason every single time. Not a people person, Not a
people person. He wears out his starters. Yes, he doesn't
believe in a bench. He is my way of the highway.
Guess what in today's NBA, And it's been this way
ROSSI for twenty five years since the Jordan rules. If
you don't play by the players rules, you're done. Well,
he's done.
Speaker 3 (02:32:33):
Minnesota, New York, Chicago.
Speaker 1 (02:32:37):
He'll make a great top defensive assistant wherever he goes
if he wants to stay in basketball. But he's sixty seven,
just ridiculously unhappy. I didn't realize terrible, the worst come
over in sports today. Yeah, I didn't like they talked
about stories about him never ending up with a wife
or a girlfriend, like he's just so basketball obsessed. Yeah,
(02:33:00):
I mean, if you had a wife or girlfriend, it's
it's say go shave that bald head of yours or
need to because that comeover is ridiculous. I know these things.
I try it myself. You did co you did the
comeover style? Tried?
Speaker 2 (02:33:10):
Cant?
Speaker 1 (02:33:10):
I see a picture of that? Now? Why not? I said?
Speaker 3 (02:33:13):
The hair on the sides. Let's play Believe it or Not?
Speaker 2 (02:33:16):
You ready?
Speaker 1 (02:33:17):
Yes? Seven one three two one two five, seven ninety
All things. Paul Skemes on today's edition of Believing or Not?
If you want to play seven one three two one
two five seven NINETI seven one three two one two
five seven.
Speaker 3 (02:33:31):
Nine zero back to that next On seven ninety.
Speaker 1 (02:33:35):
One Sports Talk, Semonni, I am honestly surprised by this,
by the Mike uh by the Tom Thibodeau firing. First
time the Knicks make the Eastern Finals in twenty five
years and they fire him. Now, do you think part
(02:33:56):
of it is that because they were the three seed
and the Boston got bounced and Cleveland got bounced, that
was supposed to be their direct path. Do you think
scream and ice Smith had something to do with it. Man,
you do not get a shelf life in the NBA.
(02:34:17):
And I'm telling the coach of the year or maybe
last year, um that I don't know, but man, he
I'm telling you Ross, he just wears on you. And
I think you put up with it when you win
and when you lose, your first opportunity to move that
guy out, you do it.
Speaker 3 (02:34:35):
Five minutes left the Gold Show, what should we do?
We should play oh.
