Speaker 1 (00:00):
Ten o one ain't town. Good morning and welcome but
to a Monday edition of The Matt Thomas Show with
Ross here on Sports Talk seven ninety alongside Rossville Area.
I'm Matt Thomas. We had a nice little ten o'clock
open for you, but our computers are freezing, so when
they fall out, we will. Let's see what you did there,

(00:21):
because it's a good song. It's an eighties early jam,
uh huh, and it rips on one of our least
favorite cities in America. I thought you love I do
love La. I don't want I said that. I just
don't like Dodger fan. I don't like Dodger. Dodger Stadium
is is amazing. Dodger Stadium traffic is the anti cras.

(00:42):
Take the Take the shuttle bus. That's what I did.
Shuttle bus, bad, uber, bad lift, bad taxi, terrible, Your
own car awful ricka heah, win a Bago double decker bus.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
Hey you can get.

Speaker 1 (00:58):
You can pull up in the win Obago a weekend
of it. Just sleep in the parking lot and understanding
even be cheaper than the hotels, that's for sure. Now
there's people sleeping in there. Yeah, I'm doing other things.
Last time you spent the night in a Winnebago, I've, uh,
probably when I was very very young. I've spent nights
and tenths. My for me was October of two thousand

(01:19):
and five. You know last time I was in an RV.
Yeah with me, that's correct. Yeah. When we were filming
Thumb and Louis videos, ESPN went to Salt Lake City
for the first time ever for game days. Is when
the Utah Youths were going undefeated, and huh. We had
Urban Meyers, the coach who was there a couple of
years and he jettisoned off to Florida. But that's a
different issue for a different time. And so game day

(01:44):
came and we said, we're gonna spend the night in
the parking lot and we did, Oh, that's cool. We
got you got a good spot. We had a big
station event, we got a big screen TV, and we
were like, we're gonna spend the whole night there. We're
it's gonna cook, eat, some of us would drink, some
of us would not. It is Salt Lake City. And
we put the game on. There was the Indiana Detroit
game was on the Malice and the Palace happened right
in the parking lot. I remember watching that and they

(02:06):
played it on ESPN like seventy five times that night,
and I knew, You're just sitting there in disbelief, like,
oh my god, they're playing it again and I'm watching
it again. Yeah, that's exactly what it was. So, yeah,
that was I'll never forget that night Mallice in the
palace the same night as us spending. We got up
the next morning early and went then we were on
ESPN Game Day. It was fun and keep the crap

(02:26):
out of BYU. So it was all good. You tell
you it's fever, catch it? Okay, I guess fellow back
pack twelve brethren or a big twelve brother twelve. Yeah,
that's it's confusing. Hey, what a wonderful weekend sports wise,
What an awful weekend for our friends in the Hill country.
I'm sure somebody that's when the sound of a voice

(02:47):
has been impacted somehow someway by this, Even if you haven't,
all I would ask you to do is, first of all,
if you are so inclined to pray, please pray for
those families. If you are so inclined to make a donation.
Go to our website Sports seven ninety dot com. There
is a click I believe it on the front page
or it's very easy to get to and make a donation.

(03:09):
I don't know, not much more to say than we're
just all personally should be devastated at what happened of
the last few days, and our hearts certainly go down
to anybody that's involved in the hill country. My daughter,
ironically enough, uh what with some girlfriends this weekend to
go float the re at Frio get me a jump scare.
When you said that, it's funny because as soon as

(03:31):
they got there, I'm like, this is a great She's
never done it before in her life. And then they
just canceled the very last second. They're there, but they're
in a safe house and everything, but they just couldn't
do it because the waters were just too high. So crazy. Yeah,
So again, please go to our website Sports seven ninety
dot com and uh donating if you can any any
little mount helps, and again, thoughts and prayers to anybody

(03:52):
that has been affected by this and all the news
stations or whatnot across the country. I know the Today's
Show was down there this morning, so obviously very very
sad situation. On a much more and extremely much more
lighthearted note, the Local nine went to Los Angeles and
I've been thinking about this all weekend. Ross, Okay, I've

(04:14):
been doing this Houston radio bit for a long time.
You're a veteran of the biz, man, I'm a veteran
of the biz. I don't know if I've been more
startled than any one singular sports team in the history
of me talking about Houston sports teams. And I'll just
give you examples. It would be like a team and

(04:36):
maybe there are teams that have been discussed at least
Houston wise, that were projected to win. For the instance,
order Slash Texans, a team that was projected to go
twelve and five or eleven and eleven and five whatever,
they at least play sixteen and they wound up winning three.
A Rocket team that was projected to win fifty three
that won twenty four. Or a Astros team that was

(05:00):
projected to go one hundred and when ninety six that
went on up winning sixty six. So using that as
kind of a parameter, if you would have told me
the Astros are twenty games above five hundred at any
point in the twenty twenty five season, with all the

(05:22):
pitchers that went on the injured list before the season
even started, not knowing what your bullpen was going to
be frankly leaving training camp. Yes, having no Kyle Tucker,
no Alex Sprigman, no yord On Well Jordan was playing,
but no, well he was terrible. He was terrible, then

(05:42):
hurt and something called Cam Smith who just made the
roster after being in the College World Series or playoffs
a year beforehand. You'd have told me in early July
there would be twenty games over five hundred. I would
have had you be slap me open hand. It's incredible.

(06:03):
And as you laid it out, I did think of
one possible comparison. I hope you can find one. The
remember the Rockets twenty two game win streak in two
thousand and eight. That was one of those like what
is happening? How are they doing this? Either was it?

Speaker 3 (06:21):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (06:21):
I think was hurt in the middle of it. I
think by the end of it, both Tracy McGrady and
Yeaw were hurt. Maybe, I mean, which was always happening
during that era. Anyways, they did a documentary about the
twenty game Streek the twenty two game win streak. I remember, like,
what is this, How is this happening? How does this
continue to happen. That's the only thing that can kind
of come into my mind that comes close. But yeah,
this the way that they just continue to exceed expectations

(06:44):
despite everything that you laid off, laid out that's going
against them now. Of course they've had some help. There
are some things. Before Jeremy Peney went down, he was incredible.
Esoch Paratus is having a really good season. Jose Jose
Altuve keep booing Dodgers fan and Christian Walker waking up.
It's been but it's been here or there. It's been
Cooper Humble, it's been Zach Short. It's okay, let's go.

(07:06):
You brought up the last name. So I'm doing Saturday's
pregame show. Yes, and I'm gonna peel the curtain back
because I feel like it's important to peel the curtain
back because we're family here on the show. So I'm
running through the Astros starting lineups before the game. Yes,
and I noticed that, oh, somebody had a day off.

(07:28):
It must have been I don't know what was it.
Jake Myers yeah, Jake Myers had a Saturday off, Yes,
and that always possibly here let's not go there. But anyways,
so I'm running through it. I know the names Altube,
I know the names Humble, I know the names uh
PERETTI is I know Walker? And then at nine it

(07:49):
says z Short and I'm like, I could there's very
few names that are z zach probably would be the
number one on the list. What's the number two? I
don't even know Zeed? Yeah, I don know if he's
from the old Zacharya.

Speaker 4 (08:11):
Is that.

Speaker 1 (08:12):
I would feel terrible if I would have guessed wrong. Okay,
so I just went and shorts shortstop batting ninth. Yes,
I didn't know his first name, Yeah, because I heard
his name but previously. But out of side, out of mind.
I mean, he's like you would have thought he was
the Sadazar. I mean basically basically not gonna play, just

(08:37):
occupying a spot like like Shaye Winkim has done. For
the most He's just been hanging out, Yeah, not playing,
hanging on the forty good meals he's getting a lot of,
so you know what it's what it is? Yeah, called
up on with the Gyormey going down Luis. Zach Short
had three hitch yesterday, Zach Short again two nineteen A

(09:02):
hitting Zach Short like he was crushing at any levels
of the minor leagues. He is a journeyman at the
very best. Probably guess tomorrow on the A team might
it would be a chalk pick on that. It's all right.
He's a good story, Matt. Yeah, it's a great story.
Good interviews can make a good Good interviewers can make
a good interview. He was on with Julia yesterday. As

(09:22):
a matter of Okay, so, Zach freaking Short's got three hits.
Taylor Tramill, who can't hit, made a terrific play in
center field after replacing Zach Jake Myers last night, and
Tanner Tramill has actually played with some pretty good aft.
He again, he can't hit a lick, but that's another
here nor there. That's all right. I mean he's not

(09:43):
playing a whole lot, but it count as a left
handed bat if it can't hit. Yeah, that's at the
left handed bets. Here's Taylor Trammel. Well, he doesn't have
a good bat. Grind batis second base is slow roller,
and I mean a slow rollers. If it's a if
you need a left handed bet in the woods and
that the bat can't hit, is it a bet? I
don't know to reach the outfield. Your squad is twenty

(10:04):
games above five hundred. With that, what were just described
by the last five minutes insane. It is absolutely insane
how things have turned out for the Local nine. And
I'm very happy about it. Seven one three two one
two five seven nine. If you want to jump into
the conversation seven one three two one two five seven, honey,

(10:26):
it is time for you to brag about the Local nine.
Seven one three two one two five seven nine to zero.
Also on the radio program today, everything from the Rockets
is now official. Kevin Durant during Finney Smith, the og,
Clint Capella, h and Cam wentmore got moved to the
Washington Wizards, and we'll talk to Ryan Hoilands about that.

(10:49):
Eleven o'clock this morning. He wanted to play more. There's
playing time on the Wizards. He's going to score a lot, yes,
and there'll be some came with more truthers. Look what
he's doing scoring twenty two years thirty point game or
something or maybe forty people like see and look, that's
something we've talked about many times that it's not surprising,
it's just going to be how is he going to

(11:09):
be a volume shooter or a fish and shooter? And
what will he do on the defensive side of things?
And will they ultimately make them a better base basketball team?
But that's for DC Radio to figure out. Yeah, I
think there's one thing he needs to do, Matt, to
turn his career around. Do we do cam more teases
on the show? Okay? I know it was a It
was a fine effort, all right. Ten thirteen on The

(11:32):
Matt Thomas Show with Ross seven one three two one
two five seven Hontie. At eleven o'clock, we've got Ryan Hollins. Now,
I did text Jonathan Allen to see if he wanted
to do to tell the truth at eleven thirty. We
didn't get a response. You know, Jonathan never texted No,
he just thumbs up. So he just thumbs up. He
just hits us with the I said that text at
four to six o'clock yesterday. I gave him the thumbs up.

(11:53):
When did you give the thumbs up at nine thirty
this morning? Thirty eight? Whatever? Why don't you ever text
anybody unless it's an hour before the show. Well, because
if I see it late, I'm just give a response. Wait,
it was six o'clock on a Sunday that I didn't
see it. I was on the game. I didn't see it.
What were you playing? I was playing Rock League?

Speaker 3 (12:10):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (12:11):
Rocket League? Okay, So do you wanted to tell the
truth or do you want to wait a week? I
could I could do I could do it. If you
think I can make us right now, okay, we'll make
you up. You're at eleven thirty. Okay, you got an
hour and fifteen. This could be amazing. It could be
a train wreck, but it's gonna be much worth living both.
It could be both compredited now okay, okay, well you
got an hour and fifteen to think about it. You

(12:32):
do have some crackpot takes, so this would be tough. Yeah,
this is gonna be good. Uh. And then we have
believe it or not? Today one fifteen and I've already done.
It's already locked and loaded. It's a happy birthday to
a ringo star. Oh really, eighty five years young today?
Good life. It's a great run. I mean, it's one
of the luckiest drummers of all time. M seven one

(12:56):
three two one two five seven Dowty seven one three
two on two five seven ninety We got a lot
to get to today between now and two o'clock. Come
on in join us. It's about Thomas Joe at Ross
and this is Sports Talk seven ninety ten, nineteen of
the Bad Tomas Show at All So things I learned
about my partner during breaks is just incredible. What'd you learn?

(13:17):
But I can't describe it in an only show. I
am so happy that Jonathan, you're doing to tell the
truth at eleven thirty. Give us. This is gonna be
this is gonna be an opportunity for you to grow
as a show host, or we're gonna have to put
you out to pasture one of the two. No, that's
not true. I'm good, I'm excited. I'm excited. So have
you just Okay, you can do your option. You can

(13:38):
tell us three truths and one false, or you can
do one fault, one true, and three falses. It's up
to you. I'm doing three troops in one law. I'll
tell you early. Oh, he's already got it, he's already
locked in lovely, I feel I can get a good
line there. Okay, very good. Okay, that was quick. That'll
be coming up at eleven thirty to day, We've got
Ryan Hollands at eleven o'clock. Because honestly, you can at
least talk about the players. Now we can talk legally

(13:59):
about the players. Now I was a talk show host.
I can do that all the time, and the Rockets
understand that.

Speaker 5 (14:04):
UH.

Speaker 1 (14:04):
If I was just a Rockets employee and that's all
I did, I would have to not do anything. And
that's why I want to make sure Ryan was in
a good spot that he could come out and join us.
But now of these officials, we can really get into
it and and kind of get a forecast of what
we could expect on UH and what to see with
the UH with the Rockets, and we'll talk more about
that as they moved along. But I do want to
brag about the astros again. And I don't know if

(14:26):
you can get to the audio. Oral Hirsheiser is in
the RCS and our star our computer system is down
right now, so I don't know if we can play
it at this point, But that's fine, or Urel, it's
all our e L For those who playing at home.
Are you a fan of Oral? Yes? I liked him

(14:46):
as a player. Is that's the guy was astro treating? Yeah?
How many innings was his his street? Was it in
the eighties or something. It's been so long, I don't remember.
But he was a guy that absolutely caused a young
Matt Thomas a lot of heartache because he'd come in
here with the Dodgers and beat the asters of the
Dome many a time. Mm hmm. And he at one
point had the longest is it's still the longest freak

(15:08):
of fifty nine? I wasn't close. Yeah, it's fine whatever,
Uh it wasnt Yeah, who's does he still on the
longest hitless scored a streak? Yes, fifty nine consecutive innings,
that's pretty crazy. Fifty nine innings not giving up a run. Yeah,
that's insane. So yeah, Orals does the TV for the Dodgers,

(15:33):
and uh, and he's a whiner. Put his foot in
his mouth, and I know what he was trying to say.
For those who don't know, we're trying to paraphrase it.
He basically alluded to the fact that the Astros were
pounding anybody that was throwing pitches for the Dodgers in
the He says, I don't want to bring up an
old wound, but specifically breaking balls. He was referencing, Yeah,
that they it looked like the Asters knew what was coming,

(15:55):
which could be tipping of pitches, which could be very
of course, but he wasn't the tipping of pitches. He
was holding to that the Astros were cheating him some. Sorry,
you have to know that while your Dodger television fan
base probably went nice, good chuckle on, you have the
audio here, it is matter of factlet's let you hear
what ORL had to say Friday after the Astros or

(16:17):
during the Astros beat down the Dodgers feels like you
you stumbled on the right thing, because even veterans have
slamps been hard to.

Speaker 6 (16:27):
Deep center field part has on the round. I'll turn
to launched this one on wedge. HiT's up from the
bottom of the road and Cam's going to flying into
second achoring there with another extra basit for the Astros.
Double homer, double so up in third against Casparios.

Speaker 1 (16:43):
I don't want an open rold room.

Speaker 4 (16:44):
But in some ways they're swinging at these breaking balls
like they know what it's coming.

Speaker 1 (16:50):
These are that is not bad pitchs. It's really a
very good kids. All right, so the reality is well again.
Dodger TV fan is chuckling over the astro fan found
out about it in one second and annihilates Oral Herscheizer
and frankly America annihilated him. Awful Announcing is a website

(17:12):
and a Twitter account that takes audio of every broadcast
and so if anything controversial or crazy, as said, even
on a local broadcast, they're going to catch it, send
it off, and they've got it quite a following. When
they're like or amazing Awful Announcement, it's like, what are
you doing? What? Why would you open your up to
yourself up to that. So ORL is getting the hate,

(17:36):
then you know what you said it. Has he made
any further comment, I don't know. He didn't work Saturday
and then Sunday. I don't know what what was going on,
But I mean it would be like, I mean, I
don't know if I was doing a Rockets broadcast ross
of something and I brought up something from yesteryear that

(17:59):
would of eight years ago at this point. Yeah, I
mean eight years I just think somewhere on the road. Yeah, well,
even say even all that, sometimes you have things that
you would like to throw in a broadcast that you
just bite your tongue and go, you know what, I
don't think I want to go viral with this unless
I really, really truly believe what I'm saying. And you

(18:22):
know that our all hersheizer even for what he said,
you knew he didn't mean it. He was just doing
it to get Dodger LA fan to appreciate him. I
don't know his yeah, I don't know his style. I
don't know. I mean if he was trolling. Remember when
like the Dave Raymond thing went viral and we knew
he was trolling because we know Dave, Ram know Dave.
But I don't know how serious he was being. I

(18:45):
just you it sounds like he's being pretty serious. It
sounds like and like being serious. And more importantly, you
know that it was going to trigger a group of people,
and it triggered all the baseball for at least that night.
It triggered national folks going, or are you serious you're
really gonna go to this? It triggered Astro fans, and

(19:08):
it clearly probably positively said yeah, no, wonder our Dodgers
are getting their ass kicked at home. We don't ever
lose like this, and it's like he's saying it to
appease the audience. Yeah, because he knows you, just because
there are I'll be brutally honest with you. It's very
difficult for me as a play by play announcer for

(19:28):
the Rockets to talk about Draymond Green, and so sometimes
I really have to bite my tongue. And I think
Draymond Green is an excellent basketball player. I think Draymond
Green is uh a generational talent in some respects about

(19:49):
the way he positions and plays the game. But he's
also generational in terms of the absolute horrific non basketball,
non sportsmanship he puts to the way he treats officials
and what he gets away with, Yes, the amount of
hitting of players and cheap shots and injured like trying
to injure them and trying to injure. So just watching

(20:10):
him work, and especially as I was calling a seven
game series with the Golden State Warriors, you you really
really want to just let it out, but you just don't.
So I didn't. You can't call him a d bag
in the middle of the call. I don't think I can.
Well you could, I could, but again, I don't want
to be an awful I don't well, I mean, I mean,
i'd be a job, but I don't. I don't. My

(20:31):
thought is, I want to be if I remember going
to go viral something, I want to be something funny.
I've gone viral in my life for one thing, and
it was what I announced the Golden State Warrior lineup. Yes,
anything else, that's it. I'm very pleased with that if
that's the one only thing I've got. Unless you do something,
you manipulate something till that arrest record gets out. My

(20:52):
point is that that was funny and interesting and lighthearted,
and it was not meant as a malicious to downgrade.
It was just, you know what, they're in our building.
It was Game seven. I wanted them to lose, and
I just want to let them know that I didn't
care for who they were. Yeah. Also, you'd been doing
that all year. It's funny how sometimes Yeah, that's right,
the weirdest, most innocuous thing or something that you've been

(21:14):
doing forever goes viral. So that's my point is that
the least the fewer times I can go viral in
my life, the better. That's the opposite, I think not
in twenty twenty five. No, in twenty twenty five, there
are people out there supporting Diddy and like marching form
outside of the courthouse. Exactly. I will tell you one

(21:35):
thing that And as you said, Diddy did what meant? Okay?
M hmm, okay, what do you giggling back over there for?
You missed? You missed the Thursday opened, Yeah, we did.
We did the Friday open on Thursday. You did not,
and then the whole show, I thought it was Friday.

(21:57):
So I didn't tease. I didn't tease. I just don't
get it. I didn't tease Brian McTaggart because because we
did the Friday open and it was it was like
a holiday Thursday, so I was in Friday modes. So
I did the worst job in radio history of teasing
ahead on Friday. And you allowed this to happen. Gentlemen,
it was half funny. It was literally ten fifty six break.

(22:17):
He goes, are we doing McTaggart here? I was like,
oh my, you didn't. You didn't mention him a single time.
We didn't mention him once. How long you've been in
this business, That's what I thought. You disappoint me. So
that wasn't surprised. Seven one three, two one two five
seven ninety If you'd like to join us, bought what

(22:38):
your squad went? Twenty games above hund Her We have ross.
I know we got nine people waiting to talk to
us here. We don't have nine lines. Lines are working.
Though lines are work, phone lines are working. I think
don't speak to his own. Uh oh, there was issues
earlier today. Yeah, so let's okay, put in a trouble
ticket and make a supposed to call me. So we
got to go on. So all right, we need one
guinea pig callar to see if you sound halfway deep

(22:59):
the phone lines work. Seven one three two one two
five seven night Josey l two v oh soul crusher,
Christian Walker, Dodger Stadium crusher, Yes, and uh Corus field crusher.
How about this The Astros lose one game of the
road tchip and it's in Denver. It just shows you

(23:21):
again how wacky baseball is. That's baseball as they say,
That is baseball as they say. Seven one three two
one two five seven ninety seven one three two one
two five seven ninety ten, thirty four Sports Talk seven
ninety is the Matt Thomas show at Ross. Wait ifay

(23:41):
grandiose open, we'll use it noon today because I just
love the song. Okay, and the Astros swept the Dodgers
and we will talk.

Speaker 7 (23:52):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (23:53):
You know, I don't know if Ryan Hollins is a
Dodger fan or hon he grew up in La Hmmm,
I would say probably yes. Then yeah, I gotta ask him,
because well, we'll talk to Ryan coming up in about
You know, there are other Astros broadcast, I mean, no
Rockets broadcasters who are Dodgers fans. You text on Friday,
I did, and you got some middle finger emojis or worse.
I would consider them worse. Love Adrian. So I didn't

(24:17):
do anything Saturday, and I certainly didn't do anything yesterday either.
Oh really, No, you gotta twist the knife after the sweep. No,
unless he's threatening violence on you. He was giving me
Spanish swear words that I went and looked at translations
to go to the you had to click the Google
translate on there. A lot of them involved machete, knives
and throats, slashing.

Speaker 8 (24:37):
You, sailess. I see what that means. Don't talk to
me that way. You just said that to Nam. He
was so surprised.

Speaker 1 (24:43):
Yeah, I'm gonna be I'm gonna be fine. Have a
nice day. Anthony deer Park on The Mat Tapa Show
with a Ross Anthony, good morning, do you Hey?

Speaker 7 (24:52):
Good morning guys. Hey. I don't know which one is
sweeter when the Astros sweep the Dodgers or sweet the Yankees.
But I just had call and get this off my
chest to tell Oral Herscheizer.

Speaker 1 (25:03):
To shut his bomb out up. Let it go, dude,
let it go. Let it go.

Speaker 7 (25:10):
Like the Astros like they're.

Speaker 1 (25:13):
Just they own you, They're better than you. It is
what it is.

Speaker 7 (25:15):
I don't know if yesterday was bring your broom to
workday or what, but I hope he enjoyed this, this
Astro sweep on his flight to Milwaukee last night. That's it, guys,
thank you.

Speaker 1 (25:25):
Thank you Anthony for the phone call. Uh, that doesn't
what doesn't happen? What happens the Dodgers happens once every
eight years, apparently a home come A team comes in
and sweeps him. And the Friday loss was the worst
home loss in Dodgers Stadium in one of the storied
isn't it the third oldest after Wrigley and Fenway. Yeah,
it's the third oldest stadium in baseball. Oh, and here's

(25:48):
the thing. Amazing. So Friday night was obviously July fourth,
and they had fifty people there. Yes, this is the
best part. And they came in part because the Dodgers
do a real good fireworks display. I have been to
a July fourth at Dodger Stadium. I know from experience
how good it is. And they let fans in the field,
so everybody wanted to get on the field. Yeah. So

(26:11):
if you want to get on the field and you
want to see this amazing fireworks display, and remember there,
it's in Chavez Ravine, so it's kind of surrounded by
hills and mountains, so you couldn't be just strolling along
one of the interstates and catch it. You're gonna be
kind of in a little valley there. You had to
stick around to watch that ass beating. That's uh. We
were trying to figure that out when we're watching the game.

(26:32):
It was like, man, this place isn't clear out at all.
It's like, oh, there's fireworks and it was full the
whole time. They just had to watch. Did you all
run after home run? Did you also see that the
Rockies and the White Sox played each other in Denver
this weekend. Yeah, they had forty eight thousand, forty eight
for that bad boy, Because guess what Major League Baseball
teams buying large do nice jobs and fireworks, and you

(26:56):
had two. You had two teams that can bind for
over one hundred losses and they had forty eight thousand
in the building. Fireworks are crazy fireworks. That's kind of
an I just don't get it. Maybe we'll bring it
up on thirsdy No, no, no, I will send there. I
get it, But I love fireworks as long as they're
far away from me or anybody in my family or

(27:17):
my house. The professional ones, I'm with you as well,
because I can tell you this, there is nothing better
than being in a ballpark or at a concert and
knowing that the fireworks done are you, are done by professionals,
and you put good music behind it. It's fun. Yeah, Lee,
Greenwood's revenue is going up. Sparklers, the did you put

(27:39):
in the middle of your streets that could hit somebody's
tree and then cause a flash fire? Not big fan
of those and my dogs. You know what I did
on Friday night after the Astros game, you put doggy
ear muff on them. The dogs are are in our bed.
And thankfully it wasn't too bad because it rained all day,
so it was kind of it was not as much
energy for fire I didn't hear as much fireworks. It

(28:00):
is normal for sure. Let's go to Chris and Jersey
Village at ten thirty eight. Hi, Chris, Yeah, hey guys,
good morning. Great weekend watching the Astros baseball. Listen to
it on my iHeartRadio Open Huntsville as I was camping. Man,
I could not believe it. I was here on.

Speaker 9 (28:16):
Friday night with the eighteen runs. It's just man, they
are really I said they were overachieving about three weeks ago.
Now I think this is just who they are as
spot as just a great coach. He's got, you know,
a great demeanor to get a team like this through
what they've gotten had to go through with all the injuries,
and I just wanted to say congrats to him, and

(28:39):
also about the All Star Game. I believe this is
Paina's first All Star it is appearance. Yeah, so congrats
to him and the other two guys that made it.
But I wanted to hear from the president of the
Jake Myers fan club himself about how he feels about
Jake getting snubbed. I mean, I just think the voting

(29:00):
is a joke. It's obvious popularity contest. But yes, Jake
is definitely deserving of it. So you know, we all
I'm glad he's not going. I personally think that that
injury Jake suffered a couple of years ago, it took
all of last year for him to really get back
on his feet and trust his body, because he throws
his body around center feel like nobody's business. And this

(29:23):
year we're just seeing what we saw before the injury.
So what do you got to say about Jake and
snow Dross?

Speaker 1 (29:30):
Yeah, you're right. I'm also christioning for him to already
be inducted into the Hall of Fame, to waive the
five years and have active player in there as well. Well.
He might become the first Astro Hall of Famer to
be inducted while still playing for the Astros. That's what
I'm hoping for. But no, okay, I'm looking. I know
the All Star starters, who are the All Star outfield reserves,

(29:53):
Buxton Kwan, Julio Rodriguez. Uh no't Jake's not making that cut.
I'm sorry. I deal appreciate Jake and I think he's great,
and he's out of he's having a fantastic season. So
here's the problem. Average is good. Holygez makes the All
Star team ops of six ninety five, that's true. George
Springers ops. Eight eighty six, No All Star. Joe Adell ops.

(30:19):
Eight twenty three does not make the All Star So
in some respects it is popularity. Absolutely, it's part of it.
That's actually, you know what, excuse me, that's incorrect. The
players voted Rodriguez in over Springer and Adele. It was
the players that did it in Jake Myers and Jake Myers.
That's all right. Yeah, if he keeps this up next year,

(30:39):
he'll be more than okay, so we know. Okay, So
Josh Hader's in for the sixth time. Good for him. Yes, Uh,
Jeremy Payne is in for the first time. If I'm
Jeremy Payania, I know I want to play. No, you
know he said it yesterday. No, he can't play. I'm sorry.
I'm sorry, Jeremy. You're you're not even doing baseball activities, right,

(31:00):
And maybe he can DH pinch run. Yeah, why don't
want to do that? He might he might slide, you
know what. I don't want to playing. And then uh
no Frober, which probably Frober is going to get on
the team because of me some pitching, somebody will get replaced.
And then Hunter Brown is when is he's pitching next?
Is he's got to be? I thought it was supposed
to be. I thought it was supposed to be close

(31:24):
to the to the end. I can't remember. No, it's
tomorrow actually, so he should be good. So Tuesday means
they would pitch on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Sturtay, Sunday. He
could throw an inning on Tuesday's a normal it's a
normal day for him to throw. Yeah, well we'll see,

(31:45):
We'll see, as long as it doesn't conflict with his
normal schedule. Again, I would send him to the All
Star Game in bubble wrap, and I would not let
him out of that bubble wrap. I would just keep
him in uniform. I'm on board with this. Yeah. So
all I'm saying is I know that a lot of
y'all get fired up for it with this team and

(32:05):
the way that they are fighting through injuries right now
and keeping people alive. Jeremy, God love you. I think
you're awesome. You can't play in the game. Somebody got
to talk some sense into this young man. Yeah, all right,
ten forty three It is the Matt Thomas Show with
Ross If you'd like to join us seven one three
two one two five seven nine zero that seven one
three two one two five seven ninety we'll talk to

(32:27):
Ryan Hollins about all the cool things that happened with
the Astros. Uh, the Astros, the Rockets as they officially
have Kevin Durant signed, Clint Capella, they move Cam Wentmore,
Dorian Finney Smith who is a rocket killer now in
the Rocket Gear thankfully. By the way, I'll come back
and give you the win total for the Rockets. First

(32:49):
one is out this year. I have not seen it.
I want to see if you play, We'll put the
range game. Oh man, you get, you get within one
and a half either direction. Think about it. Round fifty
forty three on Sports Talk seven ninety one, ten to
fifty Sports Talk seven ninty. Ryan Holland's going to join
us in about ten minutes to talk about the new
look Rockets. All right, real quick, Rossie, before we get

(33:10):
to a couple other phone calls. Larry and Carlos will
get to you in a matter of moments. Here rockets
win total, What do you think you get? Plus one
and a half either direction. I did a lot of
thinking and I'm going to go fifty three and a
half the actual number of wins. Oh man, your reaction,

(33:35):
I'm scared. Fifty four and a half. Nicely done you ooh, okay,
you know I was gonna go fifty two and a
half and I'm like, ah, Now, last year they opened
up at forty four and a half, they finished with
fifty two. Yes, if they improved seven and a half
games this year, yeah, it will be real good shape.
That'd be sixty wins. I don't know if that's gonna happen,

(33:56):
but it would be lovely. Yeah. We'll talk about this
with Ryan Hik coming up. But I wonder the regular season.
It's gonna be one of those situations, kind of like
the Astros the last couple years, like just get to
the playoffs and then that's when the real season starts.
Because they won. One of the reasons they won fifty
two games is because two of the guys that they
gave away and that Jalen Green being available for all

(34:19):
eighty two games. Dylan Brook's doing what he did in
the value. And that's not to say that we don't
know that for sure that Kevin Durant's not going to
be I don't think he's gonna be for sure. Two,
you are definitely an older basketball team. Fred's a year
older Durant's thirty seven, during Phinney Smith's in the league
ten years, So there could be you know, you're you
basically brought Clint Capella in to supplement when Steven Adams

(34:43):
can't play. Yes, so you are basically super old at
the top, not the Fred's super BOWLD, but older. And
you're still you get some babies at the bottom at
a vault, you know what I mean, baby bottoms. It's no,
I know what you're saying. It's yeah, yeah. And the
team is extremely deep, so that's what I think it

(35:04):
is also going to help them. You're you're you're missing
some of the value, the eighty two game value that
you had, but you also have I think a deeper roster. Yeah,
for sure, this team is significantly deeper than it was
a year ago. Uh. By the way, the number one
thing that my buddies are on the league saying, who's
your two guard. I'm like, I don't think what that
is anymore. Yeah, shut Joe bomasses up. It's positionless best.

(35:26):
It's not like this is my one guard. This is
my two guard. Now, you just put a bunch of
guys out there and then you just play. Kevin Durant
can play three positions. He can play anywhere. Uh, I
mean Thomas can play four. He but Kevin Durant played
center and uh when yeah, you are you saying three
four five for him or two three four five you probably?

Speaker 4 (35:44):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (35:44):
I mean you know he's not running point, but he
can bring involve the court. I mean yeah, yeah, he
has before and right he's you're he it's whatever. I'm
not worried about that, yeah, nor am. I. Let's go
to uh Larry on the Matt Thomas shild Larry, thank
you for holding Good morning to you.

Speaker 5 (36:00):
Hey, how are you doing that good?

Speaker 1 (36:02):
What's up?

Speaker 5 (36:03):
Hey man? I've been listening to you ever since Ross
was a puppy man, but I don't call in as
much because I'm older now.

Speaker 1 (36:10):
I remember you still sound great, Larry. You're always walking
on the show, Remember you Larry in Spring.

Speaker 5 (36:15):
Yes, sir, he ain't Matt. My favorite thing about this
weekend was Friday night. I watched the whole game and
I was elated to watch those Dodger fans have to
sit man in through that. Man, that was hilarious. I
loved it. I loved it. But hello, yeah, yeah you're

(36:38):
on Oh yeah yeah yeah yeah, hey man, that was
just great man. And hey, I forever listened to you
long as you're all on the radio, and love you all.
Be safe, all right, thank.

Speaker 1 (36:49):
You, Larry, go to here, Larry, Larry appreciate it. It
was rather enjoyable. Again. I have two dogs at my
house and they flip out on July fourth. We were
not going to go out and do anythingcause we were
worried about them. We don't, you know, we're not big
fireworks consumers, so it was just easy for us to
stay home. And I watched the game and I couldn't

(37:10):
turn away. I was like, we could find something else, exactly.
It was like you're just sitting there, like more more more.
You left two on base. Yeah, there yet been twenty.
It was like when I went to OU in Texas
and it was forty nine to zero and We're all like,
ah more. It was so good. Yeah, that's exactly how
I felt. And then Saturday, I'm doing the I worked Saturday,

(37:33):
and so I was like, oh, they're down one nothing
and then all of a sudden, boom they get back
and get into that game. Great defense, good relief pitching,
timely hitting, and then Sunday was just a little little
bit of a late boom and exact short day.

Speaker 5 (37:48):
Now.

Speaker 1 (37:48):
I will say this, after watching Otani first throw the
first two innings where were throwing another but bbies, I'd like,
this could be a long night. But then the bullpen
came in and then the rest was history. Yeah, let's
go to Carlos at San Antonio at ten fifty five high. Carlos, Carlos, Godlos.
You know what the funny thing is? Read what it
says he's calling, and Force says he's a test caller.

(38:10):
We can't hear him. I think he hung up. Hi, Carlos,
are messing with Carlos? Come on, man, come back?

Speaker 2 (38:19):
What what?

Speaker 10 (38:19):
What?

Speaker 2 (38:20):
Just because I was supposed to be just a test caller.

Speaker 1 (38:22):
Man, Well, okay, we're testing you. How's your life? Well,
we can't hear you. And now the line sounds like
it's flipping. It's great.

Speaker 2 (38:29):
Yeah yeah, so yeah.

Speaker 11 (38:31):
I live out in the hill country, so we're you know,
that game, watching everything going on the game, the floods
and everything. It was just so like, uh, I mean
not to milionize what's happened over there in the floods
and everything, but I'll tell you what, I'm watching those
astrots kick their butts in.

Speaker 10 (38:48):
That was as spiritual as far as I was concerned.

Speaker 2 (38:51):
But here here's my question. What what's the deal.

Speaker 1 (38:55):
With brombering the All Star Game? And then I'll just
hang up and thank you, thank you, Carl Sudden, Please
be safe all everybody that listens to us in Central Texas. Uh,
Frobert did not make it. I'm frankly surprised. It's not
like he just had a good two or three weeks.
He's had a great two or three months. Uh what
I think ten of his the last eleven starts were

(39:17):
quality that did not get the quality start on Saturday
because give the four runs, but they still gave you six. Uh,
he's going to make the team. Somebody in that pitching
staff is not gonna go, and Frober will be able
to go and Frober will throw if he threw Saturday,
so that Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, he'll throw Thursday. He could
easily thrown in in the All Star Game on Tuesday
if he wanted to. Mm hmm, hey will Yeah, he's going.

(39:40):
If you're a Frober fan, you can just enjoy the
fact that he didn't get selected. Now he's get a
little burners, you know what he's gonna go. By the way,
got an email this morning and I've not responded to
it yet. There are some people are saying that maybe
Frober's gone at the end of this year. You could
go trade him to go get optimum value for you
right in him right now. I don't think you can

(40:01):
do that when the twenty game is about five hundred
years game and half away from the best record in
the Major League Baseball. No, no, no, no, no, no
no no. Your goal is to win the World Series,
and he helps you get there. You don't get You
have no shot. I'll say it, you have no shot
without Frommer on this team. No, because let's lose your two.
Let's beget well, let's work, let's well, let's hunter. But

(40:21):
I mean three four five is a ho if he's gone,
oh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm about Lance mccullors too.
Six innings mccullor's Islands. That was a little more populated.
It's getting We got a couple of people drifted in.
But when he got hit on the foot, they're like, oh,
he locked in. He locked in when he got hit

(40:43):
in the foot. That was crazy. Yeah, that's funny. Seven
one three two, one two five seven ninety seven one
three two one two five seven ninety Obviously, more on
the Astros coming up in the next three hours on
this radio show. I also want to say you that
we're gonna talk some NBA basketball and we'll do that
next with our friend Ryan Hollinds here on Sports Talk

(41:03):
at seven one twelve, one twelve, What time? That's a
holy MISTERID eleven oh two. Please scramble the numbers.

Speaker 10 (41:13):
But you guys want to.

Speaker 1 (41:14):
Say, man, I just need to room one twelve where
the players dwell, it's went over my head. That's a song?
Is that a song? I should know? No, it's made
it up on the spot. Man, that's not true at all. Hey,
it's about Thomas shold Ross. Let's say how to our
friend Ryan Hollands, Ryan, Are you a Dodger guy?

Speaker 4 (41:32):
Yes?

Speaker 1 (41:33):
Or no? You can't be an Angels fan. There's no
such thing as angel fans. Correct.

Speaker 2 (41:36):
We can't disclose that we're an Astro's guy. We're Astro.

Speaker 1 (41:44):
You're such a politician. I love you.

Speaker 4 (41:46):
You know that.

Speaker 1 (41:47):
Oh my gosh, how are your brethren in Los Angeles?
They can't be very happy? The local nine went in
there and beat them three straight times?

Speaker 10 (41:58):
Oh, I mean, it's it's along Steven Maddie. You know
that whoever got at the end, but no La has
his shares ups and down.

Speaker 1 (42:06):
You know that, I know, I know. Hey. Now, as
official Rocket broadcasters, we can freely talk about all the
moves that were made. My friend. Uh so, let's go
piece by piece on this. The Kevin Durant talk never
really ever went away, and it got piping hot as
the offseason began. When you were hearing the name. You

(42:29):
obviously have very encouraged one of the greatest players of
all time. But now put into perspective, how does he
fit as a Houston Rocket in your opinion?

Speaker 10 (42:37):
I think you've fits beautifully, Matt, Because the one thing
that we know is Emais built a culture that will
not waiver for a player or a poor mindset as
a as a whole organization. Everybody's on the same page.
And the reason I say that is you're not gonna
You're not looking at Kevin Durant at this stage's career

(42:58):
and saying, Kevin Durant, go go and you know, score
fifty points a night, go and you know average seven assists,
Go be a playmaker. You want Kevin Durant to be
Kevin Durant and that score the basketball. He brings championship experience.
He brings the limps to this double big lineup that
we saw so much success with. He's already had a

(43:22):
rapport with Jabbari in the offseason, and he's a guy
that you're excited about what he can become because his
work ethics and his mindset. But the Houston group, which
was top of the league in defense, top of the
league and rebounding, struggled in a half court to score.
If they can't manufacture points with their defense, you got
a guy who can manufacture his own offense. So that's

(43:44):
the excitement there to join this group that has already
built something that was second in the West last season.

Speaker 1 (43:51):
All right, So who takes over the moxie part of
the Dylan Brooks loss to the Phoenix Suns. And again,
one of the things that the Ross and I have
talked about is say what you're all about Jalen And
obviously Jyalen was added near the top of scoring for
the Rockets all season long, and he also played at
eighty two. It feels like all these acquisitions during Finney
Smith Clint compel the resigning of Steven Adams. Obviously, Kevin Durant,

(44:15):
no one expects these guys to go full eighty two.
But you're replacing two guys that gave you as many
minutes as anybody on the Rockets team last season.

Speaker 2 (44:24):
Yeah, well, I think it's key.

Speaker 10 (44:25):
Obviously meant it really really hurts losing Dylan and Jalen
and job. But what Rafell did is he addressed needs. Okay,
so I can envision this is not from the coaches
staff for anybody, that Finny Smith can play that Dylan
Brooks role as obviously he doesn't have the energy, but
he brings the size, he can defend, he can shoot

(44:47):
the three. I think he could be the long term
starter in that position. Because you're right, Matt that's a
lot of minutes that the two and three spot that
are missing, and you'd assume, hey, Kevin Durant, you're gonna
want him for the playoffs. He may not play in
a huge amount of minutes. You know, you're not necessarily
looking at eighty two games. The importance for Kevin Durant

(45:07):
is in the playoffs. So Finny Smith was a huge signing,
and I think everybody overlooked.

Speaker 2 (45:12):
That because they didn't see, as you noted, Matt.

Speaker 10 (45:15):
The importance of Dylan Brooks and Jalen Green and their
availability and how hard they played and the energy and alparton.
You know, Finny Smith is he's one of those guys,
and that's why the Lakers were so upset that they
couldn't sign him, and he ends up getting away.

Speaker 1 (45:30):
Ross with you here as well, Ryan, And a lot
of talk has been had about the starting lineup. How
do you see it configured? Do you think it'll be
you know, we saw it for stretches last year to
where Coachi Doka would make it very matchup dependent and
it wasn't the same five every time. Do you think
it'll be more of the same.

Speaker 2 (45:48):
Absolutely, I can see that. Obviously.

Speaker 10 (45:51):
You can pensive shingon Durant van Vliet as starters, and
I think this is my opinion. I thought and men
Thompson as a starter obviously, but I think the goals
that we found towards the end of last season, Ross
and Ross. I know Matt thinks you're crazy, but I
think you're gonna gree with me on this. Okay, you're

(46:13):
gonna agree with me. I think Jabbari come up the
bench with such a cheat code because he can sub
in at center and you get really fast and really small,
or he can sub in, you know, and you get
this jumbo lineup for one of the guards and go big.
Or let's say Durant sits out, or you know, Finny
Smith or whoever misses a game, he subs right in

(46:35):
because for most of the time here with the Rockets,
he's the starter and he won't miss a beat. So
I think the goal would be, you know, just the
versatility of Jabbar Smith Jr. And that's why Houston went
out and extended him and really put faith into him.

Speaker 2 (46:49):
And I think even.

Speaker 10 (46:49):
To the urgency for the Durant And it wasn't just
for Durant. It's because hey, we got this young star
in Jabari Smith Jr.

Speaker 2 (46:56):
That we believe in. I think it showed a lot
of faith in him.

Speaker 1 (46:59):
Yeah, I would agree. I think Coachy Dooka values his versatility,
like you said, guarding basically one through five on switches
and using him in any number of different ways. He's
so matchup dependent, but he can help you. Is like
a great tool to have in the toolbox for Emia Dooka,
and as will Kevin Durant be and and kind of
how much do you think about this offense and the

(47:21):
way that it's going to flow to. Where one of
the good things about the offense last year was while
it was Jalen Green sometimes alprin Shangoon, there was a
lot of equality with guys getting looks and stuff like that.
And with Kevin Durant, who you got to be that
kind of ISO alpha dog, but you don't necessarily want
to build your offense around that.

Speaker 10 (47:40):
Yeah, And but and again I think the biggest thing is,
like you know, Kevin Durant, spot up and shoot, you
know we're gonna We're a guy. We can run offense
and some sets through but Shin Gun was double teams
all season. Loans and the times he didn't get double team.

Speaker 2 (47:56):
He fried.

Speaker 10 (47:57):
He absolutely fried. And even in the playoffs he was
he was successful, just being so now you're saying you
can't help Off Durant, you can't help off You know
Phinney Smith, he's a good shooter from out there and
that just changes the offense. And then Allisten Man. There's

(48:17):
the great Jim Harritt u s LA Champ ninety five
coach YadA saying he doesn't have to saying, you guys,
a love this basic goes, he goes. It's not about
the x'es and o's, it's about.

Speaker 1 (48:27):
The Jimmy's and Joel's.

Speaker 10 (48:28):
Okay, So it's about the players, Okay, So when all
else fails, you get the ball to Kevin Durant and
you get out the way.

Speaker 2 (48:35):
Matt Thomas, who.

Speaker 1 (48:37):
Is your favorite player on the nineteen ninety five UCLA
Championship team.

Speaker 10 (48:41):
Ed O Bennon, ed ed Old Bennon is a is
a legend to this day and he's and we see
all this nil stuff going on, and that is because
of his impact and the things that he went out
and fought for, and he'd be he'd be a multi millionaire.

Speaker 2 (48:58):
This is his Nile Era.

Speaker 1 (49:01):
Who had some key free throws for UCLA in a
tournament game way back in the day. I can't remember
who it was, who it was.

Speaker 2 (49:06):
How you're talking, Oh, you're talking till Maddie.

Speaker 1 (49:08):
You're talking till Maddie. You know how to Okay, Ryan's
with a Space City home network. We are so happy
that we were able to openly discuss now the moves.
Give me some Uh. Look, I've been telling the audience
during Finny smith Is three point percentage has gotten better
every year. He was an assassin against the Rockets the
last two times the Rockets played them. Give me a

(49:29):
thought or two about him and about what Clint Capella
is going to bring to the mix as well.

Speaker 2 (49:34):
I love his game.

Speaker 4 (49:35):
Uh.

Speaker 10 (49:36):
Finney Smith was a guy that's been on Houston's radar
for the way that he defends. I thought that one
of the biggest moves in getting him showed a real
commitment to what he may would like to do. He's
got thigs, so if you go with the you know,
five big versatile guys on the floor.

Speaker 2 (49:52):
He fits.

Speaker 10 (49:53):
He plays extremely hard and again he fits culture. I
thought that it was a it was a culture moved
that was big and saying, hey, we're committed to the
to the way that we played last year, which is huge.
You know, if all of a sudden Houston shows up
with all these three point shooters are offensive specialists, I
think we'd be in trouble. But keeping the bones of it,

(50:15):
you know, it's funny. I said this the other day.
I said, you know, Houston hasn't had a threat like
Clint Coppella since Clint Capella, a guy who's extraordinary yet
rolling to the rim, blocking shots and commanding defense, and
that defense was one of the tops in the NBA
off of just ball pressure and walling up on the

(50:37):
weak side and not really having a shot blocking presence inside.
Steven Adams brought that towards the end, but you know
he was trying to. He was still kind of working
his way back getting the quick compella. We're going to
clean up a lot of mistakes from the guards and
that ends up getting scary, you know. And then with Clint,
he's had some injury problems in the past. We'll be honest,
but the gold is and then Stephen Adams play one

(51:00):
game on one game off right and you get really
really good play at the five position, and then there's
a commitment to that double big lineup that was so
big and really featuring Olprea and Shangoon.

Speaker 1 (51:11):
All right, last question for you, ry size up the
Western Conference, notably Oklahoma City. I don't even count the
Lakers honestly unless Luca becomes completely different. Denver, Minnesota, I mean,
tell me how sick this is going to be covering
these Western Conference teams this year.

Speaker 10 (51:31):
It's thick because you get essentially all the teams back,
and then you get a number of acquisitions at Denver.
I mean, Denver scares me in some ways just as
much as Oklahoma City does because Cam Josh and Johnson
was a huge acquisition. They get healthier than you get younger,
and I think that they definitely improve. They got the

(51:51):
best player on the planet, you know, undisputedly, and they're
pully yell kitch over there. But the Western Conference, man,
it is as thick as they come. And I thought
that biggest thing that impressed me about Houston is like
they went out and at some point during the season
beat everybody in the NBA. They beat the league's best,
and that made you so hopeful.

Speaker 1 (52:10):
Moving into next year.

Speaker 10 (52:11):
And I'm intrigued to see how Houston plays this season,
going from being the Hunters to being the hunt Heads.
And I think just maintaining that ship on their shoulder,
staying fiery is huge. And you got the experience of
Van Vliet and Kevin Durant and the guys like that.
So yeah, it's gonna be a fun season.

Speaker 2 (52:28):
Guys. Hey, guys, can we start it tomorrow?

Speaker 10 (52:30):
I don't even know if you saw. There's a clip
circulating that Kevin Durant working out and he looks Matt.

Speaker 2 (52:36):
He looks unbelievable.

Speaker 10 (52:37):
I mean, he looks better than you on a game
day with your suit on calling some U of H basketball.
I mean, he looked unbelievable out there, Matt Thomas close though.

Speaker 1 (52:46):
Hey, Ryan, should we invite Ross with us to get
about you soon? Or no?

Speaker 10 (52:52):
Oh, Ross, You're definitely open inviting about it. Let's go,
Let's go, let's go. You guys want to go this week?

Speaker 1 (52:57):
I'm busy. Wow, I'll go with you. Ryan, Let's see,
all right? Ryan, I love you like a brother, you
know that. Thank you very much for coming on the show,
and I will see you very soon. We will bout
you in the next twelve to fourteen calendar days. You're
buying though, right, Ryan Hounds, Right?

Speaker 5 (53:20):
Ryan?

Speaker 1 (53:20):
I think was Ryan running during our conversation there look
like he's got a full workout here is I think?
Didn't you say he does that all the time? Yeah?
This guy to keep moving, man. The best Ryan Hollins
for me is we're sitting at dinner and I think
he's talking to us. He's talking to somebody else on
his blue tooth, and he can I think he can
mix conversations beautifully with two people at one time. Really, Yeah,

(53:44):
like a like a penis playing with their left hand
in the right hand and harmonizing like a drummer who
is naturally one side of a hand plays with the
other like a ringo stone ring five years old and
rings going that song sucks in a yellow submarine? All right,
eleven fifteen, Bottom of the hour thoughts impersed us Jonathan

(54:08):
Allen's to tell the truth here. Okay wait on Sports
Talk So wait, Matt Toomas show with Ross continues. We've
got to tell the truth. The Jonathan Allen edition coming
up at eleven thirty, and we're to uh speak slowan

(54:30):
and one Jonathan. We'll get through it. Yeah, see you. Okay,
it's good, and we got the news at noon coming
up at noon as well. We have you if you'd
like to get in. Phone lines open at seven one three, two,
one two five seven ninety. And we also have our
good friend Chris Cordy joined. It's a relative terms, a
great friend. Okay, you know what that's I'm glad you

(54:51):
went in that direction. A great friend and a friend
of the show and a friend of the station in
such an SEC hawk that's okay, that's fine. Gotta take
the with the bad. Nobody's perfect. We will be quick
Plug next week.

Speaker 12 (55:03):
Dan Matthews and I will be in Atlanta next week
for both SEC Media Days and the MLB All starts.

Speaker 1 (55:10):
You get credential for the All Star Game. We did you?
Both of you did? Yeah, you have to share one pass.
No flagship.

Speaker 12 (55:16):
Well we got denied one and we had to go
back and be like, we're the flagship, and then MLB
goes okay, that's right. This happens a lot in MLB. Hey,
Astros of the World Series, We'll give you one credential. Hey,
but we're the flagship okay too.

Speaker 1 (55:28):
Now, will you treat this as a work assignment or
a vacation when you go to the Astros playoff games.
It's not vacation. That's work.

Speaker 12 (55:35):
Now, Dan, I mean Dan, we'll be doing a little
bit more of the busting of ass because he's got
to get up early. He's gonna be doing the Shawn
Salisbury Show for four hours. He's gonna be helping me
immedia days, and then he's gonna be zooming across town
over to Truest Park, which isn't close by the way,
on the other side of town, and he's gonna go
get some media stuff.

Speaker 1 (55:55):
Sureest Park, by the way, The Hall of the Braves
kind of started this new phenomenon, not a phenomenon, but
a new theory of don't need to be downtown anymore.
Now it's beautiful Cleveland. Brown's are going for fifteen miles
outside of the city. Yes, I'm telling you right now.

Speaker 12 (56:10):
If they wanted to build, if they built a new
ballpark in Woodlands or Katie and they built up with
they built the battery in Atlanta, I'd be there every day.

Speaker 1 (56:20):
Yeah, I mean, you wouldn't be driving up from where
you live to one every day. It would be work.

Speaker 12 (56:24):
But there's no way. There's so much stuff around it.
You could make a whole day of it. We could
broadcast from out there, Like that's what's so cool about it.
The ballpark here, I mean, no offense. The Texans Stadium,
there's nothing around it.

Speaker 1 (56:37):
You just offended them, you said, when someone says no
offense to use the defense count Yon Park.

Speaker 12 (56:41):
I mean there's just you know, we lost home plate,
bar and grill. We lost a lot of stuff that
used to be around there.

Speaker 1 (56:46):
Like it's just still skeptical that it would it would
work just because of who we are as a town now.

Speaker 12 (56:52):
They can't get out of it because what they got,
at least for a long time. But the Texans are
pushing for it. They if they are. But if somebody's
Harris County, if somebody from the Woodlands came up today
a billionaire and said McNair family, we will pay you
whatever X amount of money and build you a brand
new stadium, they would absolutely do it.

Speaker 1 (57:10):
I've been telling that they're us. I think the I
still think the favorite is refurbishing Energy, but it's a
slight lead. I I just I think Woodlands is a
little far and I would say, I don't know, seems
a little more feasible. It's kind of what truest is.
It's it is energy. But how how many miles away?

(57:31):
Is it? Fifteen? Woodland be like thirty more? Yeah, yeah,
that's what I'm saying. So somebody from Parland up to
Woodlands is going to be what it's gonna be a
lot for It's an hour? Yeah, but also what's the transportation,
Like transportation here is horrible. I don't know what could
also live on Woodlands Spring Conroe, kingwood A tasks see

(57:52):
a cypress to fill up your not your your your venue,
but you fill up yours, your office building and your
party venues and so all of that is the population
of what like San Marcus or whatever. Like, let's why
don't have an NFL team there? You know what I'm saying.
I'm not trying to I'm not trying to be that
stupid with it, but you know what I'm saying, Like,
I don't know, I'm just skeptical. I just think Houston

(58:14):
is not the most passionate sports. Well att yeah, I
just I think there's there's gonna be some healthyes, captivesism
to say, why are we going to put a couple
of billion dollars into an area that has been dormant
of any and evene that don't like. Look, I grew
up in the dome there. You didn't go on ost
before games. You just didn't. You didn't Holly Hall on

(58:36):
a spot to go Main Street. It's never in the
history of our city been an area that has had
decent economic boom, despite the fact you've had astro Arena,
astral World, Astrodome, you had all the different stuff, and
nobody could really ever build around it. Yeah, but they
have all that land and it's been twenty years and
why My other question is, then why hasn't that ever

(58:57):
been built up? If somebody would invest in Atlanta, you
could build that up. Well, all that to say, you've
gentrified so many areas of Houston.

Speaker 12 (59:03):
The Battery at Atlanta is awesome for anybody who hasn't
been there. I mean you could literally spend all day
out there with shops and restaurants and sports bars, and
you walk right out of there into the ballpark, and
then when the game's over, you walk right out of
the ballpark across the street to the sports bar or
whatever you're go into.

Speaker 1 (59:18):
It's hell. Foxborough, where the Patriots play, is its own
city because of just the stadium'self. Yeah, yeah, but also
Boston a little bit more passionate than us here in Houston. Yeah,
but we have areas in Houston, like you know, Edo
twenty years ago, that was just fourth word. We're in
the hood. You don't call it Edo and make it
sound cool, right, right, right? Or near north Side is

(59:38):
right now, they're tralling the north it's the North Heights, like, no,
that's north Side, that's the ghetto. Like you can make
you can turn neighborhoods around, and it just has never
happened there. It's puzzling to me. We're just a little
different here. Yeah, I don't know.

Speaker 12 (59:52):
So anyway, it's gonna be fun All Star weekend in Atlanta.
Did I hear they're gonna be wearing the numbers Hank
Errands number And somebody told me that that they're gonna
all the players. You're not gonna have your number, You're
gonna have Hank Aaron's number.

Speaker 1 (01:00:05):
I'm okay with that.

Speaker 12 (01:00:06):
Yeah, try trying to play a pay a little tribute.
But I do think they have They gone back to
wearing their normal jerseys too. That's better than the stupid
All Star.

Speaker 1 (01:00:17):
The warm up jerseys they wear or the batting practice
jerseys are horrific. Yeah, it's like they get a ten
year old, Hey, what colors do you like? Do you
know what I you know? I would tell this audience
all the time. I get caught up in the Facebook reels.
And I'm on a Facebook reel right now that shows
all star lineups of the seventies. Okay, I mean I
could give you the starting lineup for the National League

(01:00:39):
in nineteen seventy four. There are seven Hall of famers
in the starting lineup. Lineup? Could we could we give
you the starting lineup of the Hall of Fame of
this year's All Star Game and have seven Hall of
famers on either side? I don't know, but they may
have seven combined, but never maybe on some one side.
Quick correction, And I meant second word, but let me look.

(01:01:01):
Let me look at the old two. That's somebody award
shaming you. No, but I figured they might, and I
was like, it doesn't matter. Okay. Five, Al, is there
a list of the All Star starters? Oh, here we go.
I have National League Jake Myers, Hall of Famer, Freddie
Freeman will be a Hall of Famer. Okay, show. Hey,
Tani will be a Hall of Famer done, Francisco Indoor No, yes,

(01:01:28):
Ronald Bakunya yes, Kyle Tucker.

Speaker 12 (01:01:34):
Got many Machado I will say yes, so that that's
just the m L, the a L. You've got Aaron Judge, absolutely,
of course, Vlad Guerrero Junior.

Speaker 1 (01:01:52):
He's got some work to do. Jose Ramirez, Yes, Cal
Rawley Mmmm, well, oh we'll see, needs to see more.

Speaker 12 (01:02:01):
The other ones are a little young, Riley Green, Jacob
Wilson's a rookie.

Speaker 1 (01:02:07):
Yeah, Ryan O'Hearn No, Bobby No. So American League is
a little weaker.

Speaker 12 (01:02:14):
Yeah, I think, but I think the pictures, Well, how
about the reserves? You got Bregman.

Speaker 1 (01:02:21):
You're saying no doubt. I don't think he's a no doubt.
How many All Stars he's been to. They're going to
look at the rings. So what no, no, no, no, that's
that's too much. There's too many guys that are not
in the Hall of Fame that aren't literally with the rings.
Julio Rodriguez, two time All Star, Alex Bregman not a
Hall of Famer, fight me, what's up? Bobby Wood Junior

(01:02:43):
on the track, Yes, Jemmy Panya not exactly what's his agent.

Speaker 12 (01:02:52):
Scott Boars says absolutely, yes, say man like a Hall
of Famer, Like, yeah, you're probably right, You're probably right.

Speaker 1 (01:02:58):
There were more Hall of Fame on All Star Games
of years past. Yeah, And I don't know what that is.
Maybe it's just because I just I grew up in
that generation. Like for instance, uh, this is nineteen seventy
six All Star Game American League All Stars and had
Rod Carew, George Brett Thurman Munson was on a Hall
of Fame career until he perished unfortunately, Rusty stop. I
don't think it was a Hall of famers rich nationally

(01:03:21):
had Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, George Foster, Johnny Bench, Dave Concepcion,
all their starring lineup pretty filthy. But Jo maybe in
twenty years we're doing the exact same conversation.

Speaker 12 (01:03:32):
And we're gonna go Pete Crow Armstrong remember him with
the Cubs.

Speaker 1 (01:03:35):
Hey, he's having a great year, man is uh so,
Gordy people are going back to the ballpark tonight starting
a series with the Cleveland Guardians. Who have they won
in the last two weeks? I don't think they're Lord
just got swept by Detroit. Wouldn't it be so Astros?
Shut your bum ass. You see, I didn't have to

(01:03:56):
finish the sentence. I knew what you would.

Speaker 4 (01:03:58):
No.

Speaker 12 (01:03:58):
I know post game Jo yesterday though, like Jake Myers
got banged up, left the game early yesterday, they might,
out of an abundance of caution, give him the day off.
Jeremy Payne is like it's gonna be the sugar Land
Space Cowboys out there this week. They'll get it twisted
like they're in a great spot. They're coming home where
they've played well. But I think they're going into this
last week before the All Star break gone.

Speaker 1 (01:04:19):
Yeah, they probably got no big deal. They probably got
home at one o'clock this morning, probably had a couple
of beverages on the plane. Sure slept well, Yes, getting
the ballpark later. But if we're going to the ballpark
t on at seven ten, what are we doing? Hopefully
you're grabbing a Crawford bok. We Ross and I were
out there at Carbark Brewing last Thursday. Had had some

(01:04:40):
nice bruise and something. Yeah, a lot of people came out.

Speaker 4 (01:04:42):
Man.

Speaker 12 (01:04:42):
I appreciate y'all was not there, but got a few
people asking where he was, but we gave out some
Astros tickets.

Speaker 1 (01:04:48):
Was a few one or two or like five or
six of people came out. Yeah, over ten dozens. They
asked about where I was. Oh, oh no, can't see us. Yeah,
but no, it's great to have people out there. Car
Bark came.

Speaker 12 (01:05:00):
Hopefully you're out at the ballpark tonight and join a
Crawford Bach from Carbach Brewing and listening to the Crawford
Box cast Ross and I as well. So grab your
Crawford Bok. Let's go Astros.

Speaker 1 (01:05:10):
Nineteen seventy one All Star Game is coming from my buddy,
Kevin Ashenfelder, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Orberto Clemente, Johnny Bench,
Lou Brock, Reggie Jackson, Al Caline, Harmon kill A Brew.
I mean, my god, you also had fewer teams and
everybody sure, everybody needs a representative. That is true, that's true.
That probably does definitely say, and the quality of baseball

(01:05:30):
was better. No, I'm not saying. I'm just saying that
looking at Facebook reels, watching the introductions of the lineups
of like Hall of Famer, Hall of Famer, Hall of
Very Good, Hall of very good. Hall of Famer, Hall
of It. It was pretty you go.

Speaker 12 (01:05:40):
Back like twenty years ago where you're Derek Jeter, I mean,
I mean all those guys became.

Speaker 1 (01:05:44):
Hall of Famers. Yep, all right, we have to tell
the truth coming up next, Jonathan. My expectations are minimal
for you, my friend. So that was good. All right,
let's find out next Ross. I never know why, but

(01:06:18):
does our producer Jonathan Allen know how to tell the truth?
I don't know. Does he tells the girl the truth
all the time?

Speaker 13 (01:06:27):
Girl?

Speaker 1 (01:06:27):
You're looking good? Baby, girl was up. We'll give it
eighty five percent. Ah, pretty good?

Speaker 4 (01:06:34):
All right.

Speaker 1 (01:06:34):
So you have four takes, four takes, guys, and we
believe three of them and one of them is a lie.
Is that correct? Three of the truth and there's one
just one lie. This is the first time in the
history of this little segment we had that we've ever
let the producer do it. So this is a little
bit of a testing ground here. Scared, we're a little
nervous because all ready I think I think I can
get you, guys, Jonathan Allen here to tell us the truth. Okay,

(01:06:57):
So my first take, I have.

Speaker 8 (01:07:00):
Astros as they are now and the culture spot has
brought into this team, especially this year. They have proven
that they can go all the way this year, they
can go all the way to the World Series.

Speaker 1 (01:07:10):
And I have no doubt in that. You have no doubt.
So take number one is you have no doubt the
Astros are going to the World's there going to the
World Series, no doubt? Is that your take? That's my take?

Speaker 8 (01:07:18):
Take number two Rockets getting rid of Whittemore and putting
him to the East with Washington shows me that the
Ashes are willing to take everything that comes with this
season if they don't make it to the Western Conference
Final or further, Katie only has two years, Van Bleiet
has two years. They're really making like if they mess up,

(01:07:39):
they mess up and they have to come back to
the rebuild stage. In my opinion, so you meant you
said Astros, you meant Rockets. But what's what's the take?

Speaker 1 (01:07:46):
So Rockets is Western Conference Finals. Rockets are willing to
They're gonna go all the way. They're going on and
everybody are here.

Speaker 8 (01:07:56):
They told everybody in Houston that they're gonna go all
the way and they're risking it all for the championship.

Speaker 1 (01:08:01):
They're going all in.

Speaker 8 (01:08:02):
Going all in, and I will repeat these all right, okay,
and this is my third take.

Speaker 1 (01:08:09):
Make sure you got it.

Speaker 8 (01:08:09):
At the NBA finals and this new era basketball coming
in with the Pacers and okay, see how they built
their team. I believe this takes basketball, especially the NBA,
away from the superstar them away from the We need
these guys to support our superstar this and this, and
from super teams from super teams a better term, yes,
and going more about team and strategy and.

Speaker 1 (01:08:34):
Placement like building through the draft.

Speaker 8 (01:08:37):
I wouldn't say building through the draft, but during these games,
it's not going to be forty eight minutes like things
are doing over there and Knicks. It's going to be
a lot more strategic and coaching and who plays too,
and the matchups going in moving forward, especially how world
basketball is playing and we are changing the value.

Speaker 1 (01:08:56):
That's a lot worse. I was ready. So that's my
third take, and I don't come back to okay, okay, good,
I need a summary on right right, we need to
some noway and take my foe take. Make sure your
parentention to yet it's okay. Ryan Gusto is the most
player on the Astro team. Okay, that's my four. Take Okay, he's.

Speaker 8 (01:09:19):
Overworked or overlooked, overlooked, over look He's the most overlooked
player on this Astro team.

Speaker 1 (01:09:26):
Go all right, Take one? Take one was.

Speaker 8 (01:09:29):
Astros and how it's spotted by this team right now
as they are.

Speaker 1 (01:09:32):
Going all the way?

Speaker 8 (01:09:33):
Allay, Okay, Rockets getting with a whit more tell us
everybody in Houston, We're going for the chip and we
don't care about the consequences that come after it. If
we mess up, if someone gets hurt, we got to
start over again.

Speaker 1 (01:09:45):
But then going for it. The Rockets are all in Okay, okay.

Speaker 8 (01:09:49):
After this NBA Finals, the league, NBA is changing their
culture and the way they are going about winning these
champions and going further and deeper into the playoffs. And
what way as in coaches are going to put different
types of role players on different types of people. It's
not going to be super team at the super team
at the super team.

Speaker 1 (01:10:08):
Okay, and you so you're saying going away from the
super team? All right?

Speaker 8 (01:10:13):
And four, Ryan Gusto is the most overlooked player on
this team.

Speaker 1 (01:10:18):
This is easy, is easy? Go ahead, You and I
have been Team Gusto all year long. Had we had
a debate Ross about that, So I know you believe
that debate. I know you believe that. I do believe
you believe the Astro is a world Series caliber and
I do believe that you think the Rockets are showing
and they're all in. So the answer is, you don't

(01:10:39):
believe that the quote unquote none super team can work.
I think you do believe they still they should still
go for super teams. The Rockets are turning to build
a traded for Kevin Durant. Yeah, that would be the
epitome of turn to build for a super team. So
I think this building the draft malarkey is fogus. You
do still believe if you're gonna win, an NBA champion

(01:10:59):
should get a build through a super team. That's what
I think you believes. I think number three year line
to us. Number three is okay, okay, all right, you
got I mean the Rockets are obviously all in. So
I'm throwing two out, Gusto. I guess I'll trust you
on that one, and that one's kind of raising some
red flags for me. Maybe I'll go with number one. No,
I'm not gonna go with number one. All right, I

(01:11:19):
just don't want to agree with you, So I'm gonna
go with one whatever, all right, give me a little
drum roll, give me a little drum dum let's go. Now.
The way this works is you rule out the ones
that neither of us picked first.

Speaker 8 (01:11:30):
Okay, you pick number three or right, Matt, I did,
But okay, tell umber for Ryan Gusto. Of course, you
guys know, I'm a.

Speaker 1 (01:11:39):
Team, your team. He's the heart of the astro part
of the he is the heart of the four six one.

Speaker 8 (01:11:51):
Alright, Rockets getting we're going all we all knew that
was a that was okay.

Speaker 1 (01:11:58):
I believe NBA is changing, Matt.

Speaker 8 (01:12:01):
I believe that this is going to be, and I
believe Rockies right now aren't a superteam.

Speaker 1 (01:12:06):
We got kd as a person to lead. But it's
not the same as it's going to be as I
was growing up. And you guys, remember, I don't believe that.

Speaker 8 (01:12:14):
But and so my lie was thinking saying that Ashes
as they are now are going all the way and
I could be that. I'm gonna be the realist here.
I'm gonna be the you know, the cloud or whatever
you want to say. The wet blankets, the wet blanket.
We don't have enough pieces. We are going they need
to make a trade, yes, and we need to do
something because we've got so many people injured. We got
we not just because we get this La sweep and

(01:12:36):
everybody they're doing. Yes, they find the rhythm, yes, but
as we are now, I don't think they'll go all
the way.

Speaker 1 (01:12:43):
I like this. I like this a lot. And that's
your j case. Tell the truth. Yes, all right, Ross, congratulations,
Thank you, Matt. I think two and three are pretty
darn close. And so that's when he added when he
added no doubt, that's when I was like that. He
put that in there to kind of maybe, okay, all right,

(01:13:04):
all right, Jonathan, I I think you're gonna be able
to do this again. Plus my guess is probably in
February of next year. Oh, I'll give him a C plus. Yeah,
I'll give you more of as Oh, come on, I'm
gonna be minus. You know what I'm gonna put on
the curve up, I got you, I got you, all right,
there you go. That was to tell the truth. Jonathan

(01:13:27):
Allan style here on the mat Tom of the show. Up, Well,
who's moving up? All right? You'll see. Let's see. Oh yeah,
we are moving up, so we'll definitely do here. We
have the news at noon. Come up, we're gonna play
our song at noon. We're ready to go. Oh my god,
it started my computer. We're good. That's good, it's good,

(01:13:48):
all right. Seven one. By the way, when we come back,
something happened last night. I didn't even know about it
until after it was done. And I'm not talking about
love life. Seven one two two five seven seven one
three two one two five seven Natti moving on up. Ah,
we got the news at noon, coming up in a
boat to ten minutes from now. We've got a little
bit of a musical tribute to what the Astros did

(01:14:10):
in Los Angeles the last handful of days against the Dodgers.
So I tease this before the break. There is something
that happened here in town yesterday that would never have
been top of mind to me ever ross, But I
didn't even know what even happened here in town until
after the event was completed. Oh, okay, go ahead. The

(01:14:34):
Gold Cup final was played last night, yes in RG Stadium. Okay,
I didn't know that, And I follow soccer close more
closer than you do. Buddy, even as a I mean,
I'm a sports fan. Even if it was again, I'm
not following this week in soccer. I don't listen, we
don't bring up soccer. I don't peruse soccer websites, not

(01:14:55):
listening to the iHeart Soccer podcast. No, And that's fine.
But my point is is that and it didn't. It
was sold out, but let's face it, my guess is
it was very few. It was USA versus Mexico, right, huh.
My guess is the crowd was significantly in favor of Mexico.
I don't know that. I don't know. I'd only caught

(01:15:17):
the highlights.

Speaker 2 (01:15:18):
I didn't know.

Speaker 1 (01:15:18):
If anybody went to the game last night, what would
you say the crowds spin was on this? There's probably
a lot of uh. I mean, my initial guest would
be fifty to fifty maybe, And maybe they did market
the Hispanic audience, in which kind I'm not listening to
Hispanic TV or radio stations. So because I don't understand
where they're saying, you've seen the hotties on the Hoose shows.
I mean, I might look at it. I'm mute, but

(01:15:39):
I'm not saying I'm like, I'm watching this tennis match
right now. I'm mute, and I'm having zero problem with it.
Oh god, this is the women's round of sixteen match.
I believe there's a couple of semi final winners right here.
We're not even talking about the game, right. My point
is this, I didn't even know it was happening in
our town, and I was at home all weekend. I

(01:16:02):
didn't see a commercial for it. If your son didn't
tell you, I didn't see five, six, and ten. I
didn't see Sports Center Live from there. I mean, I
think it was a Fox Sports one event, but I
think it was a regular Fox, right or No. I
may have been regular Fox, but I think some of
the stuff was on FS one before. Usually you have
a like I even know when like major European friendlies

(01:16:24):
take place, that the stadium was full of it. I
legitimately did not know, h okay, and I'm wondering if
the average fan knew there was a what would you
put Gold Cup in terms of importance? Oh, it's it's low.
I mean the Euros in Europe are better. Uh, the
Copa America is bigger. This is like it's down the list,

(01:16:50):
Like if if the Savannah Bananas were playing it at
dyke In opposite the Gold Cup. What would have gotten
more attention from the from the local news media probably
the Savanna banan Us. I guess I don't know. I
don't watch the local news, so I can't speak to
someone in general. I'll tell you what's a bigger deal
the Gold Cubs. Certainly when it's USA Mexico in the

(01:17:11):
final as well, which is the big rivalry in USA.
While they lost two to one, it really wasn't that close.
What happened. They just got Wait, two to one would
indicate a close. They just got closely and they got
no play. Yeah. But I mean, yeah, you can have
a two to one baseball game. And but a bunch
of people had a bunch of you know, they had
a lot I'll put it this way, Mexico had a

(01:17:31):
lot more traffic on the base pass they did. Yeah,
all right, So if anybody went yesterday, tell me what
it was like to be there. If it was I mean,
obviously they had a full stadium. I think they announced
tenanci seventy. Mexico. USA was the dream If you're putting
together this event, that's the dream final. Obviously it's the
easiest way to sell it out and well sell a
lot of beers and whatnot. But I legitimately did not

(01:17:55):
know about it until because if USA would have if
they would have played it in, say, Kansas City, I
wouldn't have cared two cents. But I thought, wow, this
is pretty big for you. You should have gone. Well,
I wasn't gonna do that because the Astros were on,
but I just thought it was weird that a relatively
big national sporting event was in our community and I
had no idea it was even gonna be there a

(01:18:18):
full stadium. Well, yeah, they didn't need me. Yeah, it's
like I didn't know Kesha was coming into town. I've
known about cash for quite some time. Was that on
the list of tickets you got? Did you get a
list from your daughter? Like I did get me all
these tickets? Now? Yeah, my seventeen year old living a
beyond charmed life. She went from a cruise to a

(01:18:41):
weekend Dallas playing volleyball to now being she was in
the hill country, fortunately not involved with the rivers and stuff,
but she was hanging out with her buddies for three
or four days and then she's coming back here to
then We're going to Rhode Island next week, so you
might be the one. Dad and Matt. Matt Thomas has
a lot of faults, and I talk about many of
them on this show. You do. He is an excellent, loving,

(01:19:04):
caring father. He gives his children the work. I do
whatever I can and I have Remember one day, I
remember him. Remember we talk about Father's Day. I'll give
you that. Thank you very much. I am the greatest
dad of all time. You know what. Oh my goodness,
I love my kids are good? All right? Eleven fifty
seven is the time. So the phone lines are not

(01:19:26):
lit with people that went to the Gold Cup yesterday.
That's okay, now, seventy thousand, not that gold Cup, by
the way, we're all talking about the Gold Cup, and
that's when shut down. I did it really after a
couple of raids near that, not that I've ever gone.
I believe you went to a Gold Cup before, after
a station event. It was after the ten I'm sorry

(01:19:49):
Mooters Motors. Yeah, there was a listener who said they'd
pay my cover and they did, and drinks and he
he did. I threw up on myself. That's fine. In
the cab on the way home. Oh see you why
not having to pay extra feek?

Speaker 13 (01:20:09):
Right?

Speaker 1 (01:20:10):
I got kicked No, the guy kicked me out. I
don't even want to talk about anything. It was younger,
I was. It was in my younger my younger days.
I mean, I had to be true. I was in
my twenties for sure. When was it ten thousand and four?
Ten thousand went pretty quick, twenty thousand level work, thirty
was a lot of work, and then there'll never be
a forty. So just saying I was in my twenties,

(01:20:31):
I was a producer. I was gullible at that point
in my life when this is the problem. We went
to the thing and everybody was like, ros I want
to buy you a shot. Let's do some shots. I
was like, oh yeah, let's go four shots later, like
in twenty minutes.

Speaker 7 (01:20:45):
I was.

Speaker 1 (01:20:45):
It was a bad night. I had a big headache
and then I saw then I had to call an
uber because my other option was just to walk several
miles to my hotel room. That wasn't going to happen.
That's a good's that's the best option. So walking to
your hotel room in a violin us get them off
my pants. So hopefully I didn't smell too bad. I

(01:21:06):
got a five star right out of it, so I
guess the I got most of the vomit smell off
me somehow, and it was a quick uber and then
I went home and threw up some more in the
hotel room. At the extended me. You did very no expense.
I was making ten dollars an hour. Ten Who we
like you to? We like uh and Dreamer or Navarro?

(01:21:29):
Do we like them both? I think I do like
them both. I have to change this. This is good.
I like putting Lauren Shahati on all right, lots of highlights.
Let me watch in Wimbledon. We get to the second
third hour the Matt Tamas Show at Ross. If you'd
like to join us to celebrate the Astros win, we'll
do it next seven one three, two, one two five seven.

Speaker 3 (01:21:45):
Ninety's The Matt Thomas Show with Ross.

Speaker 1 (01:21:58):
Oh we do love lay beautiful people, Rodeo Drive and
the Astros sweep the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Astros have played,
obviously the Dodgers a lot. They were in l West
teammates for many, many many years, so it's not like
it's uncommon for the Astros to have success at Dodger Stadium.

(01:22:19):
But it happens now every other year, which is god.
I do like the unbalanced or yeah, it's unbalanced because
you play different teams every year. So it's good. Astros
win twenty games above five hundred. Wow. And something called
Zach Short had three hits yesterday. Yes, And Bennett Seussa
gets people out. Ryan Gusta was good. Ryan Gusta was great.

(01:22:40):
We are your official Ryan Gusto station, Yes we are,
and we're hoping that Jake Myers, is it a quad?
Is that what I heard? It was a quatter calf
a cat? Okay, what it's one of those may he
had a nice flight home, resting comfortably, hopefully, And don't
want anybody else the Angel list because it feels like

(01:23:01):
that list is immense right calf tightness right day, tightness,
soreness or discomfort? I think tightness seems like the best. No,
soreness is the best? Ali so tight? Oh, I can't move.
I've heard elbow elbow soreness. Discomfort is another word for it.
Would you rather hear elbow tightness, soreness or discomfort? Sort of?

(01:23:25):
I'm going tightness sorens get I can I can I
you profin and bock it out tightness, you can loosen
it up tight it is hard to maneuver. We all
can agree you don't want discomfort discomforts the last one
by far let us present to you at twelve oh seven,
the News at noon, and with that we go to

(01:23:47):
the news desk or sports over is there to handle
all the top headlines, Juls Matthew, as you'll mention the
Astros destroying the Dodgers in a three game sweep over
the weekend in eighteen to one victory starting things off
on Friday. It was incredible as they just continue to
win despite all the injuries piling up, the latest of which,

(01:24:09):
as you mentioned, the calf tightness with Jake Myers, hopefully
he does not miss much time. And also the historic
win for the Astros, the biggest in Dodger Stadium as
you mentioned, and the Astros as a team mat We
talked about the pitching and how it's been carrying. The squad.
Team OPS in Major League Baseball is up to eighth, eighth,

(01:24:36):
how why who? More importantly well, Christian Walker wait diag
road trip for him. Jose L two Ves got his
season OPS up to seven eighty eight. Last year he
had a great number seven to ninety this year seven
eighty eight, So a little bit of the slippers that

(01:24:56):
we were talking about, hopefully is not there. He'd had
a huge weekd and Dodger Stadium where they were booing him.
And of course we also discussed Oral Hirscheizer talking about
the Astros and the whole its steal. Feels like they
know what's coming. That was I've run on things to
talk about because my team sucks. Yeah, I could. I

(01:25:17):
could agree with that. Also, you have the American League
All Stars named Jeremy Panya an All Star. Will he
play Nope? Seems like he wants to. I know he
wants to, but needs to be told and you're not
going to. Of course that would be his natural reaction
as soon as you got a name. Are you playing? Well?
Of course I want to play. I want to get
out there. You have, of course Hunter Brown named as

(01:25:38):
an All Star, Josh Hater as an All Star. No
from ber Valdez, No, Jake Myers as an All Star.
Matt your reaction, Frober to me is the one that's
gonna get the ada. I don't believe Jake Myers will
make it. Jake's had a very good season and as
obviously some career type numbers for the Astros. But I

(01:26:00):
don't think Jake carries a lot of cachet around Major
League Baseball. He might if he becomes the World Series
MVP in twenty twenty five. Don't be a hater, Matt Belly.
So many people have asked me about this, and we
got to get to the bottom line on this with Jake.
That damn helmet his falls off every single time. Now, Yeah,
I was saying it's it's been a running joke for

(01:26:21):
a few years now, but it feels like it's getting worse. Yeah.
Does he just have like a tall head so the
helmet's too wide or is it? It doesn't seem like
he's got a fat head like a Mike Napoli if
you will.

Speaker 4 (01:26:34):
M.

Speaker 1 (01:26:36):
But why I mean even on like walking to first base,
it falls off. Yeah, it doesn't, but you know what,
you get my drift. It comes off often when he swings. Yeah,
I don't know what's going on, and that would wouldn't
irritate you if you were if if your head, if
your hat kept falling. Oh, whatever he's doing, it's working.
Maybe it's a magical hat. It could be all right,
it can you do on? Let's see Matt Djokovic grind

(01:27:01):
out a win today at Wimbledon to reach the final
eight your thoughts, uh Andreva leads six two to two
to one over Navarro. I frankly don't care who wins.
Both are winners in my book. And also, yesterday was
the seventeen year anniversary of the historic Roger Federer versus

(01:27:22):
Rafael in the dult Wimbledon final. It went into sixteen
games of the fifth set. Where were you I was
watching it. I don't remember where exactly it was. I'm
gonna assume that I was watching too when I was
a kid, younger adult that you said sixteen years ago. Yeah,
seventeen seventeen. Breakfast at Wimbledon was kind of a not
a automatic, but if you you got up on a

(01:27:44):
Sunday morning it was eight thirty nine o'clock in the morning,
you'd watch it. Many people calling it the greatest match
of all time. That was seventeen years ago today, and also,
of course it is a noon. I guess it's news.
We already knew, Matt, but it is official. Kevin Durant
is a Houston Rocket as part of a seven deal Rockets, Hawks, Nets, Warriors, Lakers, Timberwolves, Suns,

(01:28:06):
and we will go through all fastest of that trade
on the show today. We don't have to. No, I
don't think we're going to. No, we don't have to.
But unfortunately, Kevin Durant and company are not going to
have any sort of media availability, probably prior to training camp,
so we will not really hear I'm excited to be
here until it's literally time for start a training camp. Yes,

(01:28:28):
Kevin Durant said he could not make it. He will
be on Twitter arguing with people. I did call him
I knew bestie, hoping that he would retweet, are like, hey,
what's up man, Good to have you, nice to be
here with you. Needed to respond that's okay. I'm sorry man.
You follow him? No, I'll follow athletes. Won't you follow him?
If you wanted to tweet you, he can. I retweeted him,

(01:28:49):
so he knows every tweeting. If he follows you, I'll
follow him back. You'll follow them, mut him. I under
that it's fine and that's your news. It news, Thank
you very much. By the way, A lot of people
are so his tweets you and I are both getting
the same that. Yeah, the crowd at the game yesterday
was heavy, heavy Team Mexico over Team US. Yeah. Yeah,

(01:29:10):
like I said my first guest, I guess I'm yeah,
I'm stupid. Mexico was the in the audience went was
what people are saying, ninety to ten dreamshek says ninety
to ten. Steven says he eighty to twenty still and
I think she was there because he said fun atmosphere
not much for USA fans cheer about.

Speaker 8 (01:29:28):
But why do y'all think it's not advertised like you think,
like as it should be.

Speaker 1 (01:29:31):
Because I don't think they needed this. Yeah, they sold
it out, Yeah, seventy one thousand. It was a seventy
one thousand sellout. And what were the chances of USA
being there to begin with? Not great? No, I think that.
I mean, I think this was the Chalk Final. Okay, so,
but they obviously spent their advertising dollars on probably the

(01:29:51):
Spanish speaking audience. Perhaps. I well, look, let's just be honest.
Soccer's not huge here. This is not They're the sixteenth
ranked team in the world, and that's not a huge
passion for the sport. For whatever reason, it's just never
really caught on in a huge way here. Attendance around

(01:30:13):
the country was down. And I was watching that shootout
in Minneapolis last Saturday Sunday, Yeah, and apper deck was empty.
Maybe it's not you. Maybe it's USA soccer that just
doesn't draw that if you put any if you would
have put could uh would Argentina have been over there?
Oh my god? Yes, a lot of Argentina fans. Argentine,

(01:30:35):
I mean they've won multiple World Cups. Pain, I mean
they've also won World Cups and Euros and stuff like that. Yeah,
they all have a better history. What's the best finish
for the United States in a World Cup history? Making
the final sixteen I think, or maybe the final eight.
So it almost feels like, and again I don't want
to I'm certainly speaking out of turn here that maybe
if you're these US events, stadiums that are hosting these events,

(01:30:58):
maybe you want not a USA team there. Well you
new Mexico was Mexico's in there? Yeah, I'm trying to
look at the Yeah, OK, if USA would have taken
on Canada here yesterday, what would the crowd have been.
I'm gonna I don't if you're telling me eighty twenty.
I'm curious what United States Guatemala and Saint Louis was

(01:31:22):
in United States, Costa Rica and Minneapolis. It looked half
full of that. That's what I'm saying. That's the one
I watched. And then yeah, let me just look at
uh Quatemala. So if you're a World Cup stadium, do
you not want team you out?

Speaker 3 (01:31:36):
Well?

Speaker 1 (01:31:36):
You have World Cups so different that that's that's the
flag wearing and whatnot? What semi final United States Guatemala
twenty two, thousand, four and twenty three, And where was
this Energizer Park that's a soccer specific stadium twenty thousand

(01:31:59):
where where was that? Let's city Saint Louis. Okay, so
that's they didn't put in the dome or they didn't
put it at Bush Stadium. No, So I mean twenty two.
My guess is I've never been to Saint Louis soccer team,
but I'm guessing that's that's probably sell out, Right, I
got a guess. I got to hope. I don't know.
All right, twelve sixteen is our time. There's your soccer

(01:32:21):
report for the day. The Astros are twenty games about
five hundred. I brought this up very early in the
show today, and I want you to see if you
guys can come up with a good example of this.
I mentioned very early today that in the history of
covering Houston sports and talking about Houston sports teams, has
there ever been a team that has given you such

(01:32:46):
a surprise? For instance, a team that you thought was
good in the NFL was gonna win twelve games wound
up losing twelve. A baseball team that you thought was
going to lose one hundred that won one hundred. Or
are a Rockets team that you thought was gonna win
fifty five last fifty five basically the plot to Major
League exactly? Is this the greatest, most nothing gress? Is

(01:33:07):
this the most surprising season ever in Astro's history? Will
debate that next twelve to sixteen Sports Talk seven ninety
twenty two Sports Talk seven ninety Matt and Ross with
you here. We take our jobs very seriously. Our job

(01:33:28):
is on a very serious one. Does that make sense
to you Sports Harvey, I would agree with that. Most
of the time, we we do appreciate you guys spending
part or hopefully all of your day with us on
this station, this show in particular, and very rarely do
we ever step outside of sports. But just again, Ross
and Nevers talking off air, the Kirk County flood relief,

(01:33:53):
the devastation of the last few days. It has been
on our minds constantly. Sports, as I mentioned on Twitter
earlier this week, is a great diversion. Doesn't mean we
can't that we're going to turn the blind eye to folks.
And our website sports seven ninety dot com has a
direct connection to a Kerr County flood relief fund that

(01:34:13):
I would like for you guys, if you are willing
and able to do so, if you can contribute that
I mean a lot. I have made my donation. I
am just absolutely in as many I'm going to assume
that every single person in the sound of my voice
is in the same spot. The Kirk County and what
happened at the Camp Mystic over the weekend and the
horrible devastation just about as sad of a story as

(01:34:35):
you possibly can have. And there's nothing more that we
can say that We're sorry if you've been affected, if
your friends and family have been affected, if you know
some of those affected. We sent our deepest, deepest condolences
and if you can help out any way, The Kirk
County Relief Flood Relief Fund is through the Community Foundation
of the Texas Hill Country and you can click on

(01:34:56):
it directly at our website at sportsseven ninety dot com.
And if you can do that and spare a little
bit a chump change, we greatly thank you for that. Yeah,
you go to the website and scroll down a little
bit and it's right there on the left. It's in red,
and it's it's a direct link. Yeah, so we're here
to get take you away from that, but we ain't

(01:35:16):
forgetting about it, and just just absolutely uh. And my
daughter never went to camps. My sons went to camps,
but they didn't go there. They went up in the
northeast and around Link Livingston. So I mean, it could
happen Franklin, anything, Link. But just just unbelievably tragic, tragic story.
And we think about you guys, if you've been affected

(01:35:37):
by it or your friends, and we think if you've
not been. We just we're just thinking about Kirk County
and uh. And then you can do to donate would
be greatly appreciated, all right. Twelve twenty five Sports Talk
seven nine eight is the Matt Thomas Show with Ross
seven one three two one two five seven Aunty. If
you want to chime in on the conversation, you may
do so. Seven one three two one two five seven. Hony.
We have Believe It or Not today coming up, which

(01:35:58):
I've already done. It's Ringo started it last night. Really
you're fired up. I was gonna say some Sunday nights
used to be an awesome night of television. Help me
out here. Sopranos Sunesday night. I think so. Game of
Thrones was Sunday of Thrones. My curve was on Sunday Night. Yes, HBO.
It's always a big night for HBOS. Yeah, Sunday Nights

(01:36:20):
used to have going back many many years. Succession come
on Sunday Night. Succession, I think was a Sunday night.
I'm trying to get into the TV of like the
some comedies when I was a kid, the Jefferson's were
on Sunday nights, which I thought it was funny show. Alice,
I'm just going to give me example of shows. Sunday
Night was a really good TV night. And then in

(01:36:43):
the nineteen nineties, ESPN brought us Sunday Night baseball, and
that to me, and I'm segueing into sports here, that
was the game of the week. John Miller still does
the Giants games, great booming voice, really authoritative, and Joe
Morgan excellent analyst. If your team got picked for Sunday

(01:37:05):
Night Game of the week, that was a big freaking deal. Yes,
I yeah, it's just it's just the multitude of options.

Speaker 4 (01:37:15):
It is.

Speaker 1 (01:37:16):
It's everything, all the streaming services all I mean, even
just you, you know, but even so there's even I
guess as you go, don't have the time anything anymore.
You just if you want to watch what you want
to watch, you find it on Netflix, who gives it
to you on a regular basis. And you know what,
you can also do. I tell myself, like I didn't
watch the Gold Cup Final yesterday. I'm like, I'll just
catch the extended highlights. The extended highlights are your friend.

(01:37:39):
But also like you kind of miss a lot of
the game. It's obviously better to watch the whole game,
but sometimes you're like, I just watch the high I
watched the highlights when I get home, So you can
do that on you and now you know, everybody's TV.
If you had a smart TV, it's got the YouTube
app on it and you just click that and then
you PLoP on there and then before you know it,
three hours of pasted and you're you're watching the extended
highlights of the two thousand and eight wimbled and a

(01:38:00):
federal No it don't match. Maybe that was just me, Yeah, yeah, yeah.
So last night they had the Sunday Night baseball game
on and I'm trying to it was Rangers padres. Uh,
there was two of them. There was that, there was
the Cubs and the Cardinals took Chicago was up ten
to nothing, and I'm watching the video right now. There's

(01:38:22):
a cardinal picture that struck out a Cubs batter. Strike
three usually means end of inning. Guys are walking off
the field. Hey, that's all the Cubs could do in
this inning, would go to the next sitting here on
ESPN Uh huh, Carl Ravich didn't say a word. As
the guys are walking off the mound. Really, the cup batter,

(01:38:43):
the Cub batter goes back to the dugout is mike
short out?

Speaker 5 (01:38:47):
No.

Speaker 1 (01:38:49):
He obviously was confused, and he said as much. He
thought there were only two strikes. What was the bad
one he did recently? Oh, he thought a ball got
He was like this ball crushed and it was like
a lazy foo. Oh. No, what he did is he
called a home run that he thought was a game winner.
It was the top of the end. That's what it was. Oh,
that was bad. That's okay, that was really bad. So

(01:39:12):
let me tell you something. Can you get caught up
in a mistake? Yes, you can. I have done it,
and you can also see ya your mistake. Yeah, or
you're asked that's what he's saying. Yes. But I think
the easy perception is if they're walking off the mound
to go to the dugout, yes, and the batter is
going back to the dugout and the other team was

(01:39:33):
grabbing their gloves to go back on, that probably meant
that was the end of the inning. What is he?
Was he on his phone? What was he doing? I
don't know. Put your phone down, Carl, But it just
gave you another example of how so many things in
television and sports are awesome. In television in general, as
you mentioned all the options, the Apple, the Netflix, But

(01:39:54):
there is a part of me that was like, damn,
there is nothing to do last night, and I'm watching
a crappy game on ES with announcers who shouldn't be
doing the Game of the week because they can't even
figure out when strike two or strike three was. I'm
not even trying to be funny, like should he be
a gets like so go through some kind of cognitive chat.
I was just going to say that because I mean

(01:40:16):
a matter of fact, I'm gonna I'm going to send
you the audio and look, let me tell you something.
I have made boneheaded mistakes myself, and I'm just gonna
flat out to you what though, I mean, how what
is it egregious? Like, Okay, you call a two pointer
or a three pointer because the foot was on the line,
I mean whatever, that's forgivable. Yeah, but calling something a
walk off when it's the that that is like you

(01:40:39):
wouldn't expect rookie ball play by play guy to do that. John,
I just sent you the email. I want you to
play the sound when you let us give us a
thumbs up on this. But I was like, what, how
I don't know, you're on network television doing the Game
of the week. You're not doing high school baseball. Here

(01:41:00):
here's the sound real quick. Just tell me if I'm
missing something else misinterpreting this. That was strike three. Turtles
are walking off call. Everybody's coming off the field. But

(01:41:23):
I thought that was the second strike.

Speaker 4 (01:41:24):
But apparently that was strike three because both sides are
in their dugouts.

Speaker 1 (01:41:30):
I'm looking at you, that's it. He's looking at his
partner for affliction. And and in baseball as well, don't
one one on one hundred one thousand out of one
thousand baseball play but play. Guys score the game as
they're going along. Yeah, I'm not necessarily every every pitch,

(01:41:51):
but a lot of guys do to every pitch. I
don't strike too, but then yeah, okay, so I guess
it's strike fine, weird, So what I would do? And
again we get two seconds here? What there are some
angles that I can't see very well when I'm calling
a basketball game. But if I know a shot was
missed or a shot was made because of their inbound

(01:42:12):
that if the shot was made, the ball was inbound
of machi means it was made. Yes, if the shot
wasn't wasn't inbound, and they run in the direction really quickly.
Context clue context clue is everything. Then it was a
painfully obvious context clue. I'm actually worried about them. If
you ever catch me really losing my fastball, you got

(01:42:33):
to tell me, because man that that was a tough,
TOUGHO talk during the break. Oh jeez, you're awful, all right.
I asked you a question to the best winning of
Houston sports history. The most surprising Houston winning moments are
happening with the twenty twenty five Houston Astros. Argue with me,
or can you? I don't think you can seven one

(01:42:55):
three two one two five seven ninety seven to one
three two one two five seven ninety twelve thirty six
the PM here on Sports Talk seven ninety on The
Matt tom Show with Ross Ross View Real Matt Thomas
with you phone lines open if you'd like to get in.

(01:43:17):
Seven to one three two one two five seven ninety
seven one three two one two five seven ninety Astros
sweeping the Dodgers over the weekend, twenty games above five hundred,
seven games ahead of the Seattle Mariners, and you can't
even say, like before you'd be like, all right, whatever,
the Mariners are like below five hundred round five hundred,

(01:43:39):
Who cares they're winning a week division, And yes, a
division is weak. Rangers are below five hundred, Angels and
A's of course are below five hundred. But the Mariners
are forty eight and forty two. That's not terrible. That
is still in the position of being the third wild
card in the American League West. So it's not while
they are running away with a we all bad division.

(01:44:00):
The Mariners are pretty good their position to be in
the playoffs right now, and you are twenty games above
five hundred, seven games ahead of them. And as I mentioned,
I was mind blown when I saw this earlier, and
we talked about it in the news and noon eighth
and team ops with no yord On and everybody underperforming
as much as they have, I just don't get it.

(01:44:22):
Do that on Thursday, Yeah, you do them on Thursdays? Ross, Okay,
I'm sorry, I haven't. I just don't get it. I'm
gonna start sending you on tour by hour notes even
when I'm off. Okay, you should. Actually it wasn't my fault.
I thought with you, look, Jonathan, whose fault is it?
July third felt like a Friday. It just did all right,
I will say this, it did it was a really

(01:44:44):
fun show. It was fine, It was it was you know,
how was the show quality? Oh? Gordy was incredible and
I would I give Gordy an A and myself a.
So so you guys are on location. We were at
pizza and pints. Okay, we may be had a location
this Thursday and tell you good pints, good pizza over
the pizza pipe at CARBONK Brewing, sponsor of the Crawford Box.
Cast for free on the iHeartRadio app. All right, so go,

(01:45:06):
let's go back to answer my question. Okay, is this
the most stunning season in Houston sports history? It has
to complete again. We're setting this up, are you? This
is the most surprising team I've ever been around in
talking about Houston sports. Is there another team that we're
missing out on? Seven one three two one two five

(01:45:28):
seven on eighty. This is the most surprising team from
a team that spent what six weeks playing win one
lose one, win one, lose one, win one lose one
to a team that's had all the injuries with pitching.
Do they hitting in their twenty games about five hundred?

Speaker 2 (01:45:44):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (01:45:44):
I will again go to the eight Rockets. That was
insane when they won twenty two game. It's like this
team was because every other team they were on the
list with was like the seventy two Lakers and what
was it the the Oscar Robertson and Kareem Abdul Jabbar
Bucks or something like that. That it was crazy the
list they are. Have you ever seen that meme where

(01:46:04):
it's like four soldiers and then a guy in a
clown suit. That's basically what the Rockets are on that list.
It's like all the greatest teams of all time and
then the two thousand and eight Rockets. What is this?
What's happening? And they were really good when they were healthy,
but they just weren't a contender. And we'll see. I
think obviously the Astros are American League. I wonder what
the betting odds are, probably Detroit and then the Astros

(01:46:27):
as far as favorites can I don't want to be
a Debbie downer to a small stage, so oh, here
we go go ahead. But if they're gonna walk away
with this division and compete for a one or two
seed American League, the expectations now are so astronomical that
ross if they lose in the division series, I'll be

(01:46:52):
devastated because you worked your ass off with all these
ailments and all these guys you never heard of in
your life that are winning these games. If you peter
out in a five game division series, that's cruel to us.
That's not fair. Hunter Frobert won two, ain't worried about it.

(01:47:15):
You needragety three. Who's spends arraghetty. He's a really good
picture with a broken thumb. Who's been gone for when?
How long months?

Speaker 3 (01:47:28):
Who's this?

Speaker 1 (01:47:28):
You're on hour as you speak of what's the latest
on the Actually we have a Dana Brown cut. We're
supposed to get forty eight What happened to forty eight hours?
How many hours Dana talked on that? Oh, that's right,
we did get it. That's right, was the on Sunday?
We have it. You're on updates and next steps. But

(01:47:49):
it was an exciting time for us.

Speaker 14 (01:47:51):
And I would tell you because of this when he
went in for more imaging. Uh, you know, the pain
was not related to the fracture. The fracture is a
non factor right now. That's a good thing. The pain
was related to some inflammation. He received two shots and
he's feeling better and better each day. The first thing

(01:48:13):
is we'll we'll get a bat in his hand and
get him to start taking a little dry swings, just
to see how that feels. Because the pain is pretty
much it's gone right now. And so once he starts
to take those dry swings, we'll get them off the tee,
we'll do some soft toss, and then of course we'll
get them off the machine, and then at that point
we'll make a determination what the next plans are.

Speaker 1 (01:48:35):
But those that.

Speaker 14 (01:48:35):
Can all happen pretty quickly, you know, in the near future.
But the thing is, he's feeling a lot better, and
once he starts to take some dry swings, we'll know
a lot more.

Speaker 1 (01:48:46):
I can say something real quick.

Speaker 8 (01:48:47):
Yes, as an athlete, and it's really and every time
I hear about this topic, it really irks me. He
just said that the fracture is still there, inflamation there,
and we're gonna take dry swings still.

Speaker 1 (01:49:00):
I don't even know. I've never heard of my entire life,
but I know what a dry swing is. I just
haven't heard it ever discussed. Let me tell you something
my dating life is in my twenties is a lot
of dry swings. Yeah, if you know what I'm saying
it's unfortunate. Thank god I've found Kim in nineteen ninety
seven dryness and all right, I'm a little worried. Go ahead.

(01:49:27):
That was a phrase that was that was pretty swoon.
I'm doing my air quotes. It's radio, but I'm doing
air quotes pretty soon. Yeah, near future. That's that's September
first to me. I may, you know what, as long
as it's my October first, I don't care. See, I
think he needs more. I don't think he can. You can't.

(01:49:47):
You can't be as gone as long as October first
and expect him to contribute at all. Well, I'm not good. Look,
I'm just saying, as long as he's there, okay, Yeah,
I don't know, I don't know. You're not a doctor,
I'm not a hand special I'm gonna act like one
for the next twelve seconds. I'm gonna take you this
kind of hand specialist. I'm gonna tell you that he
needs to be on the field by September the first.
He needs a month of swinging and not dry swinging.

(01:50:09):
I'm talking about the real wet ones. Twelve forty three,
easy peasy, Oh, this might gonna be fun. We're gonna
be on this Friday too, so you're actually gonna be
on air. I know you'll be able to say it's Friday,
and it'd actually be Friday twelve forty four of the

(01:50:29):
Bad Top of the Show with Ross, Donnie and Tambaugh
ont suck Sebasters. We'll get to him, we'll get to
the rest of you. Come on and be a part
of the show. Your squad's twenty games about five hundred,
and they're doing it without Jordan Alvarez and the dry
swings and no aarraghetty, no hobvi air. What's the opposite
of a dry swing a wet swing?

Speaker 4 (01:50:56):
Like?

Speaker 1 (01:50:56):
What's the uh? What's you know what a dry dry
rub is? Right? What do you call rib that's not dry? Glazed?
Matt walk that back to you. I don't think so. Yeah,
you glaze it?

Speaker 4 (01:51:12):
You do?

Speaker 1 (01:51:13):
Okay, that sounds fine. Hey you never blazed ribs? I
have never cooked ribs before. Oh okay, I'm about to
have a rib right, look up to three two one method.
It's very easy. Okay. Hey, let's tell you about the
Shell Federal Credit Union. I'd really appreciate if you would
get away from this conversation. I'm talking about something more important,
about getting yourself a chance to win five thousand dollars.

(01:51:40):
We thank you again for spending part of your day
with us here on the Matt Thomas Show with Ross
Believe it or not. Today it's all things about Ringos
Star eighty five years young and Ross. We want to
take care of our twelve o'clockers. I'm gonna give you
one of the questions. Love it, and we also should
know what great prices we have. Yeah, we Johnathan to

(01:52:01):
give us the question and then he'll give us the
I was gonna hopefully give you the questions. Oh okay,
well you're both stalling. Okay, well you both stall while
you can follow me on Instagram. I wouldn't do that
at sports RV. Oh I saw your count. Your count
is getting up there a little bit.

Speaker 5 (01:52:14):
Yeah, I know.

Speaker 1 (01:52:15):
I'm trying to follow everybody back. I was begging for
followers on Twitter. I'm trying to build it up. We're
up to nine twenty four. I'm following everybody back. I
got you guys on the prize in the next ten minutes.
Everybody who follows me, I'm following you back. Here's my question.
That we'll give you the prizes. Here's the one. Ringo's
favorite meal is pizza, but he says he only gets
it on USA tours because British pizza is quote rubbish

(01:52:39):
made up. That's ant, that's anot Oh I would have said,
believe it. He's never had pizza before in his life.
There you go to this day? Why uh? He says,
most of the ingredients he's aworded to. Oh, okay, is
he gluten free? Lactose intolerant? He's got gout, so we
can't have pepperoni. One question I did not put go.
I don't want to mix it up. But yeah, that's one.

(01:53:00):
There's your freebie, right, you do another freebe Oh I
was not in the next hour. Have you guys get
this right? Of course? You get the Sports Talk seven
eighty t shirt. Oh yeah, of course you can put
that one last every day.

Speaker 8 (01:53:10):
And we got a pair of tickets to see Psychedelic
Firs live. They're back at the House of Blues or
is this.

Speaker 1 (01:53:17):
The same tour the Psychondelic Furs at the House of Blues.
Whoa huge tickets coming up? Yes, what's your favorite psychedelic
first song? Matt, it is This is gonna be tough

(01:53:37):
for me to say. Okay, go ahead underneath the apple tree.
Oh okay, mine is a stand by me.

Speaker 3 (01:53:42):
It is not.

Speaker 1 (01:53:45):
It's not all right to the phone, Donnie and Tom Ball.
Thanks for warning. Donnie, you're on seven ninety. Good afternoon,
Good afternoon.

Speaker 5 (01:53:54):
Uh yeah, I was gonna say.

Speaker 13 (01:53:55):
The only team I can think of that might be
either a surprising or more surprising than the Astros this
year is the Assros that got into in the paper
as though they were dead.

Speaker 1 (01:54:11):
Yeah, that's really good. Thank you, Donnie. That's a great one.
They put a little when the chronicle puts a headstone
out and they wind up winning the division? Was a
division or wild card? I don't matter. Five did they
get in as a wild card? I think they got
they went they played the Cardinals. Was no, They beat

(01:54:32):
the Cardinals to win the National League that year. When
was the headstone oh four or oh five? I thought
it was five? And then was that the A L
the n L D, these are all running together. They
beat the Cardinals. That was when lydg gave up the
home run to Poolhole Senator Game seven, Oswalt wins Game seven? Yes,
And when the was the Chris Burke walk off was

(01:54:54):
which which year was that?

Speaker 4 (01:54:56):
Was that?

Speaker 3 (01:54:56):
Four?

Speaker 1 (01:54:56):
Or oh five? Uh?

Speaker 7 (01:54:58):
Oh four?

Speaker 1 (01:55:00):
To say the Burke walk off? And I want to say,
did they beat the Cardinals in six because it didn't
have to go back to Saint Louis to wins it
was six? Yeah, they game they could have beaten the
Cardinals and the b and the Burke was also five
against the Braves. So Chris Burke can do squat o four.
I don't know what he did.

Speaker 2 (01:55:16):
You know.

Speaker 1 (01:55:16):
The hardest thing about that for me was I was
moving from Houston to Salt Lake City in the middle
of the playoffs. Oh man, yeah, My boss was like,
playoffs are where me? Are you gonna cover this team
when you're moving salt I said. I was like, man,
I'd give you my two weeks and I'm gonna keep
I'm gonna say for four bye. Yeah. That's why we're
in this business though, playoffs, That's that's where it gets fun.

(01:55:39):
The energy, Oh, you can't beat it, you know. Wednesday
night against the Rockies, I'm okay. I told uh, I
told her this is carliad to day. I said, Carl,
I said, you know, the Rockets are a heavy favorite
to go to the NBA Finals. Not heavy fav they're
one of the favorites to go to the NBA Finals.
I said, I might miss your high school graduation. She's
like what I said, do you know it's fine?

Speaker 4 (01:55:58):
You go?

Speaker 1 (01:55:59):
Well, time you win. She's gonna walk across this to age.
I said, there's some positives to me working these games. Yeah,
and I told her what the positive verse. She's like
that you'll be missed. Yeah, you beef up that graduation present.

Speaker 5 (01:56:13):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:56:13):
I mean we're going to Hawaii next year, so we're
gotta make sure that works for those games. Let's talk
to Vince on seven out of and twelve fifty five
high vints.

Speaker 2 (01:56:23):
Hey, good afternoon. Hey.

Speaker 4 (01:56:24):
One of the one team that I thought of is
nineteen eighty one when the Rockets, with the losing record,
headed to the NBA Finals versus Ball.

Speaker 1 (01:56:31):
You know what I said, You know, I don't know
is did what? And I'm not old enough. What would
the expectations that team to begin with? Well, I don't know, Malone,
because look, look look at their roster.

Speaker 4 (01:56:41):
They had a you know, Agingoch, Calvin Murphy was aging
Newland was aging.

Speaker 1 (01:56:46):
Don Levy was there Mosa Malone was growing up.

Speaker 4 (01:56:49):
I mean, I get level with Alan level was a rookie,
I think, And yeah, you know so no, no, not
high expectations.

Speaker 1 (01:56:55):
So that's good.

Speaker 2 (01:56:56):
Uh And and they were.

Speaker 4 (01:56:57):
The U I just looked it up on they were
the he was the second team with a losing record
to make it to the NBA finals.

Speaker 1 (01:57:04):
Uh was this was the really? I thought there? Who
was the other one? What was was? Was the Van
Gundy Knicks an under five hundred team? Maybe no, there
were no?

Speaker 4 (01:57:14):
Google said some team way back in the fifties.

Speaker 1 (01:57:16):
Oh, okay, okay, Igo Stags or something weird. Hey, yeah,
I have some of their gear. Yeah, I bet you do. Stop.
Thanks Vincent the Fall. Mow Alone finished fourth in the
MVP that year, so he had a great year. But
outside of that, I mean, Robert Reid had a good season.
Calvin Murphy was thirty two. He shot ninety I'm just curious.

(01:57:38):
We will never know. But yeah, what were the eighty
eighty one Rockets supposed to do? Yeah? Murphy was older
in decline, so was Tom Johnovich. Calvin Murphy shot ninety
five point eight percent from the free throw line. That,
of course, he did expect nothing else but from the boss. Yeah. Yeah,

(01:57:59):
it seems like a expectations will be pretty low. I
mean you had an MVP candidate and then a mix
Yeah over under for Rocket wins this year? Yeah, what
was the win total that year? Yeah? This year's fifty
four and a half. Who nice? You're going with me
to the Western Finals? Already told you all right, let's go.
Already told you. I can choose NBA Finals or that's

(01:58:21):
up to you and we'll see it. We'll take a
look at the bracket when the time comes. You're saying
that if it's it's gonna come down to cities. So
for you know, you know, if Oklahoma, if Oklahoma City
gets knocked out by somebody else, I feel they're gonna
make the final. If it's if it's l A and
the if it's the Rockets and the Clippers and the
Rockets in the Lakers like I think lab. I have
never been to an NBA Finals game. I have been to.

(01:58:47):
I've been to Western Finals. I've been to World Series.
I've worked six of them, and I've been to two others.
Number of games I've been to eight NBA Finals games
in my life from Jelly, how many I was young
and fat. Important question, how many more are you going
to we'll discuss. It's part of the final hour of
the Matt Tabas Show at Raw seven one three two

(01:59:08):
one two five seven ninety seven one three two one
two five seven nine zero old one oh four Sports
Talk seven ninety Hope you guys are in a good mood.
We're trying giving you a little bit of an avenue
away from sports. Obviously, our thoughts deep, sincere, remorseful, painful, whatever,

(01:59:32):
I'm running out of adjectives for the devastation in Central Texas. Horrible.
No words could really do justice. Yeah, we can't do it,
but we can ask you to do and I've done
so already. Is please go to our website Sports seven
ninety dot com. There is an icon what about eighty
percent of way down the page even Yeah, you just
scroll down a little bit. There's a story about Vin Durant.
It's one of the first like, it's the first link. Uh,

(01:59:54):
and it's on the left kirk Kerk County fledterally fun
You click right on that, it takes you directly to
their page. We are not you know, we are just
funneling people to the page We're not, of course, not
making any money or taking any money. It's he goes
to the Kirk County of Flood really fund directly to
that website. We doesn't even go through our our company goes.
We would say it on air, but it's like a
really long CF Texas Hill Country dot blah blah blah

(02:00:14):
blah blah. So just the link is easier to give out.
So please, please please, if you can not the money
is going to fix this, It frankly is not no.
But if we can help them anyway, feed some people,
help with the uh the tree the I mean houses,
recovery and recovery, you know, whatever, whatever we can. Again,

(02:00:36):
we're on a loss for words. Just an awful, awful
tragedy this weekend. So please, if you can take a
couple of minutes and spare a couple of dollars, if
you can sports seven ninety dot com and look for
that uh recovery efforts that they're trying to do in
Central Texas, and we are, we are really really thinking
about them, and that's why again, if any of you

(02:00:56):
have been impacted by us, let us know. We'll be
happy to put you with them as well. We can
they're trying to put everything towards that one website to
get the financial support that's needed for that. I know
that we live in Kingwood and one of the teachers
at Kingwood Park High School passed away. You've been a
thirty year teacher there, and they have not found his

(02:01:17):
wife or his child at this point when they're unfortunately
we're now in the presumption situation. But the folks in
Kingwin had a little vigil last night for him and
just very very sad. So if you can help out
a little bit, just lending a helping hand with a
little bit of a donation, I'm sure you got a
lot of families that are displaced right now and a

(02:01:37):
lot of lossuls. So we will invite you to go
to sports seven ninety dot com and for that we
thank you. All Right, back to what we try to
do and as to entertain you and get some sports conversation.
Astros are home tonight for the Cleveland Guardians who have
lost what ten straight games. Yes, I'll start the sentence
away this way again, all right, So this means so

(02:02:00):
so let's put this in perspective here. You stop me
from completing the citadels last time I'm moving on. So
the Astros are a minus one thirty five. That's not crazy,
Meaning this if you want to make money on the game,
if you were a bettings, if you were going to
the state line and going over across and betting something

(02:02:21):
and say vintinky Charles. Sure, it's a minus one thirty five,
which means you have to spend one hundred and thirty
five dollars to win one hundred rossie. That doesn't seem crazy.
If you think the Guardians are going to beat the Astros,
you're only getting one plus one point fifteen. That doesn't

(02:02:43):
feel crazy either. Colton Gordon, we trust. I wonder why
the Astros are not a heavier favorite than that, Tana
Mabbe on the heel. Conversely, if you were to bet
the Rocks versus the Red Sox game tonight, the Socks,

(02:03:05):
who are only a game above five hundred of the
Rockies are twenty one and sixty nine. So it is
what it is. But the Rockies are a minus two
twenty five favorites. You'd have to spend twenty five dollars
to win one hundred bucks.

Speaker 12 (02:03:18):
Mm hmmm.

Speaker 1 (02:03:20):
The real odds somewhere in between. That's how they make money.
If you thought the Rockies were a or a blind
squirrel finding a nut only a plus one eighty five,
that's not it's juiced up. That's uh, that's forty dollars
a juice. That's that's a lot. Yeah. But again lies,
I say, that's why they keep building sports books and casinos.

(02:03:40):
They don't give you the true odds. Nope, nope, that's
why you gotta find the value when you can. Yes,
that's why a sharp blake Matt Thomas with the first
five hits like eighty nine percent really impressive. I don't
know how I do it. I don't know. He is
my lot mind. Generally speaking, My sports takes are terrible, terrible.
My predictions are bad. And you've never heard of either
of the starting pictures. And you're like, eh, you're a wizard, Matt, Jonathan.

(02:04:03):
Are you a gambler? Jonathan? You know college was you
know how it takes that back? Okay, I'm just saying
you gotta go with this like Charleston time. You ought
to see me work the room on a plus first
five innings game. Again, Ross is not lying. I win
eighty nine percent of the time. I don't know why
I believe first five. Yeah, when we're here and making

(02:04:24):
picks on air, when we're in the casino, it's a
tail empt. That's right, it's gravitated towards empty. I'm gravitating
towards the Astros. By the way, did you see the
Seattle Mariners this weekend? They also did some damage too.
They Let's see the final score in that game yesterday

(02:04:45):
was oh yeah, they swept the Mariners. No, excuse me,
the Mariners swept the Pirates. I want to say, I'm
gonna double check this. Yesterday was one nothing, The previous
game was one nothing, and Friday's game was uh six nothing.

(02:05:07):
The Pirates went to Seattle and didnt score a single
run over the weekend. Takes a lot, Pirates, and they
lost a pair of one to one nothing games back
to back. Paul Skeens, get me out of Pittsburgh. I
can't take this anymore. I'm gonna lose twenty games with
thera two he is, Yeah, I think it's like one
ninety four era and he's like a four and seven

(02:05:30):
or something like that. Okay, look he's got a smoke
show of a girlfriend. Yes, he's going to make a
boltload of cash three hundred plus million minimum minimum minimum.
He can live with a few losses. Yeah, you're right,
he wins when he gets home. Put it that way.
Point nine to two whip one point nine four Era

(02:05:51):
four and seven record four and seven wins to Ernie again,
one point nine to four. My close personal friend Nolan
Ryan had to go through that on many, many a time.
He didn't have a point nine to two WHIPU. He's
walking everybody. But that's okay. We love no one. I'm sorry.
I mean you, you're just you always are, Like I

(02:06:11):
have a wet blanket, but extra But I gotta add
this in there. Guy, you're right, You're right. I'm sorry.
But usually what I'm adding in is a fact. You
know who would hate you is Lebron James. All the
individual accomplishments, all the championships, the MVPs, the points. Yeah,
but he only shoots thirty one percent from three in

(02:06:32):
the fourth quarter of championship games. No, I think he's
better than that. You get my Let's see what would
I butt? I mean, the big butt would be he
has fewer championships than Kobe. All right, I'm gonna I'm
gonna throw three things at you right now, random things. Okay,
let me see I can do this.

Speaker 4 (02:06:50):
Let's do this.

Speaker 1 (02:06:52):
Are you calling me negative? Earl Campbell, oh is one
of the greatest running backs I've ever witnessed in my life,
whether he was a Texas Longhorn, a Houston Honor, or
a New Orleans Saint. Yeah, but he didn't really have
the longevity. He only had like really four maximum five
plus seasons, and I think it's arguable he made it,

(02:07:14):
not even should have made the Hall of Fame. Okay,
that's one down. You hear this, folks. Ross's Yeah, but
number two Shawn Alexander with more yards and Earl Campbell,
Clinton Portis, Ricky Williams, Marshawn Lynch, Eddie, George, Tiki Barber,
Jamal Lewis, Sorry, go ahead, number two Tiger Woods. Oh

(02:07:42):
reinvented golf in the nineteen nineties and marchin and most
of the two thousands. He became must watch television because
he got a young group of kids watching. He got
a bunch of people that didn't watch golf to watch.
And oh, by the way, he was dominant on Sundays well. Also,

(02:08:03):
he was a bad person, ruined all of his interpersonal
relationships not only with his wife but also with every
basically every caddie that he ever met, and just sacrificed
personal relationships on his way to the top and then
never reached Jack Nicholas's number and his violence wings led
to many injuries. Okay, so those with the layups. The

(02:08:28):
pope speaks in front of millions. One speaks in front
of millions of people staying away from this one. He
is fluent them, usually multiple languages. Gets to meet with
world powers and tries to create a world of peace
for every country, no matter what their affiliation is and
who they believe in. He tries to Uh, you go

(02:08:48):
to the Vatican, He'll speak with you. He'll speaks in
front of hundreds of thousands of people. He meets the
government leaders. Yes, he's a man of incredible, credible faith
and honor and has a wonderful soul. Just put three
words into Google and that's all I'm gonna say, and
then you go. You can go from there.

Speaker 15 (02:09:04):
Catholic Church abuse, Oh I'm much talking my chicken.

Speaker 1 (02:09:17):
Excuse me? What are you choking chicken?

Speaker 4 (02:09:20):
Back?

Speaker 7 (02:09:20):
Are you choking on your chicken?

Speaker 1 (02:09:24):
We gotta move past this. We're not moving past you
choking your chicken. Ross, maybe you took my chicken. Man,
He doesn't know. No, I know, you'd go to urban
Dictionary if you I don't want you choking on your chicken.
You can do that at two o'clock, certainly when you're

(02:09:45):
in maybe in the car, but not in the not
in the building. You are, That's what you are.

Speaker 7 (02:09:53):
You are.

Speaker 5 (02:09:54):
Yeah, but.

Speaker 1 (02:09:56):
I got one for you. Beautiful people, eighty three degrees,
beautiful oceans, nice people, plenty of places to eat and
relax and just ponder life. M Yeah, a place that
was colonized and a lot of the native peoples are

(02:10:19):
held down and oppressed, and they really hate when tourists
come over there and they treat them poorly, and there's
a lot of deep rooted economic issues. You are the
male Debbie Downer you asked me to. I'd like to

(02:10:39):
think I'm pretty positive overall you got you got him
choking ice chicken in there. That's a hymn problem one
to hear from HR one of the Matt Thomas Show.
We're like the Rockets are meeting with the media, just
rafell Is. It's a very informal situation, not like a

(02:11:00):
former press conference. If it was, we would have carried it,
but they're not. So Rafel's going to join the show
tomorrow walking forward to that love it. Yeah, I don't
know the time, but I'll a chilling tomorrow when he
joins us. Wonderful, So we'll have got feelings tomorrow we'll
have Rafel. We may move a couple of things around
depending on his schedule, but that's the plan. We'll also
have Joe spotted with us. Joe Spottle will be locking

(02:11:20):
into twelve thirty. But the show, Yeah, we're trying. We're
doing great. We're trying. We're trying to do our best here. Oh,
it just wrapped up. We're gonna Raffel was just finishing
with the me finishing meet with the media a few
minutes ago. So we'll get a couple of sound bites here,
hopefully in the next ten minutes or so. All Right,
Just my guess is just general excitement about having Kevin
Durant here. This is going to be very very weird

(02:11:43):
for me, and I would say this for anybody. It's
gonna be weard for Rocket fans. Kevin Durant has been
a pain in our ass for fifteen years. Yes, all
the years in Oklahoma City. Then he goes to go
get he goes to Golden State, where there was a
lot of animosity about that. I've always supported him, you

(02:12:04):
have been you have supported Lebron during the decision that was.
I didn't have a problem with him going to Miami.
I had a problem with how he did it. Oh,
raising all that money for the Boys and Girls class, Yeah,
he could have wrote the check, wrote wrote written to
check without having to go through all. He raised awareness.
He did not raise awareness. You raise awareness by saying, hi,
I'm Lebron James. Here's five million dollars the boys and

(02:12:25):
Girls giving all these children opportunities. Thank you, Lebron James.
No wrong, what a great philanthropist. No, he did it
because he wanted to sup promote and when you're the
one of the goats, I guess you.

Speaker 15 (02:12:35):
Could get it.

Speaker 1 (02:12:36):
Yeah, I'm sorry the guy who was told he was
the chosen one since eighth grade. He thinks he's got
he's got main character syndrome. So it was no, it
was put on those Sports Illustrated cover. We're wrong about
this ross, you're very You're wrong with very few things.
Why don't I sign the Doland Trump here. I don't
on Lebron James, No, I can't do it. It was

(02:12:58):
no that was a joke and he had to wear
it for a long time. But I don't. But the
point being, where am I going with this?

Speaker 11 (02:13:05):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (02:13:05):
I don't know. So Durant's just been a pain in
our ass for the longest time. Yes, and now he's
with us. But he never was the evil enemy. He
was just stop trying to stop beating us. I will
say I disliked I respected, always respected Chris Paul's game,
but I disliked the way that he would whine with
referees and flop around. And then when he came to Houston,

(02:13:26):
I'm like, all right in hitting the jewels. Occasionally the
occasional nut punch would happen. Yes, And same thing with
Russell Westbrook. I liked Russell Westbrook, but it was more
of like entertainment than I wanted him on my team.
And then he was here and it's like, well, I
got a party, Russell Westbrook. So I'm about to unhappier
about Kevin Der. I'm about to enter my tenth year
with the Rockets. Okay, congratulations on this. Are they going

(02:13:47):
to get you a thirteen watch or something, and I
don't think so they should. This will be thirteen years overall,
but my tenth year coming in this with this current run,
I want you to get We're gonna play reverse. You
know how he always asking you sound effects of players.
I want you to give me sound effects of great
players that didn't start as a rocket and my feeling

(02:14:08):
about them, and you're feeling or my feeling about okay,
and you can also add your sound effect to just
go back to the last since I've been joined doing
the game, I'm throwing them at you. Yeah, you throw
me okay.

Speaker 3 (02:14:18):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (02:14:18):
We'll start with, uh, well, Dwight Howard particular order you
worked with Dwight. That was in sixteen he left, right,
Uh I never called games with Dwight. Okay, but you're
a PA. I'll just start with Dwight Howard. Yeah, okay. Uh,
Chris Paul Yeah, pleasantly, eh, pleasantly Yeah. Russell Westbrook really

(02:14:44):
he was actually remember when they went five out he
was actually pretty good. I'm not talking, I'm just talking
about the whole experience, all right. Well, and then Ryan
Anderson m h. Let me think Eric Gordon got a
some trouble with eg up James Harden during a rocket post.

(02:15:08):
I mean he was an MVP here, I'm not saying
I'm not talking about the performance. I'm talking about the result.
There was just like the result being around him on
the planes, hotels and then the Four Games. Kevin Durant
is too TVD. But I'll still say Kevin Durant. MM.
I don't mind he's thirty seven years old.

Speaker 15 (02:15:27):
I just don't.

Speaker 1 (02:15:28):
That's the same thing you make when we mentioned Sophia Vergara,
she's fifty something. I don't mind that either. By the way,
did j lo Of at fifty five is really good too? Continue? Oh,
I'm sorry, I googled Sophia Vergara.

Speaker 5 (02:15:47):
Good for you.

Speaker 1 (02:15:49):
Your mind is right here we go go ahead, here
we go. Miss. I'm want to try this in you. Okay, yeah,
but Sophia Magara one of the most beautiful women in
the history world. Done, and every time we do a
fantasy five that involves women, she's always in the list.
She's perfect. I got nothing. Okay, you finally got me.

(02:16:09):
Get you. How could I say a bad word about
Sophia rich There might be something that I just don't
know about that another one for you. Uh did you
hear that? What's our girl? The blondie?

Speaker 7 (02:16:20):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (02:16:21):
Married to the Saren Lifeles. Hanson is now the most
successful female actress in terms of money in movie history.
Is that true? Just just with Jurassic Well, Jurassic Park
is gonna make a billion? Yeap? What other? Well? Okay,
she's been in all those Marvel movies she has. Yeah,

(02:16:42):
you can't yeah about her. She's perfect. She married a
dork on SNL but he's funny. Yeah. Okay, So those
are the guys done. So those are the players of yesteryear.
That I that I was pleasantly surprised about. Chris Paul.
And by the way, remember when Chris Paul and James
Harden apparently hated each other. Yes, yes, what Chris Paul

(02:17:04):
might be going back. You might go back to the
Clippers if you hate James Harden that much. No, you're
going back to the Clippers. You're not going back to
the Clippers. The Clipper wouldn't be an option. Apparently he's
hinting at retirement as well. He said this last year, Okay,
after this year, after this year. Yeah, it should be

(02:17:27):
he's got a well, he's not catching Stockton. Let me
look at the old Time assist list. He's got to
be close. I don't think he's actually I think I
think Stockton is still blowing everyone away. I'll go look.
But what he needs to do he needs to continue
to pad his lead over Lebron James because Lebron might
catch him. Uh yeah, Stockton has fifteen eight hundred and six,

(02:17:51):
paul has twelve thousand and four to ninety nine. So
who is of all those players in the last nine years,
who's the greatest player I've called personally as a Houston Rocket,
James Harden, Oh, Chris Paulak whose career? But it's gonna
be Durant once I call a game, Isaac. Yeah, Kevin
Durant is uh top fifteen old time I think, and

(02:18:15):
you Ryan Hollins earlier in the show today, he's like, man,
he looks he's working out, looks like he's twenty five.
And again I will say this, I put him ahead
of Steph Curry. They were on the same teams in
their prime. He won both of those finals MVPs and
he was a better career defender than Steph Curry was.
But Durant caught a lot of flight. Yeah, because he
went to go join a team that was already great
to begin with. They don't win those championships without Kevin

(02:18:37):
Durant and what he was doing in those playoff runs,
including against the Rockets in eighteen. We have believe it
or not coming up with Ringo Starr in twenty minutes
here on the Matt Thomas Show at ross seven one
three two one two five seven ninety seven to one
three two one two five seven ninety got a listener,
Bobby sent me a nice long email. Listens to show
or it's just like Kevin, Thank you very much, Kevin

(02:18:57):
for that. Seen my body bouchet there for a minute, Kevin,
that was builtmore Billy Madison. Yeah, I'm not looking forward
to Billy Madison too, or Happy Gilmore. Happy Gilmore too.
I gotta be honest. Teaser trailer looked horrible. I felt

(02:19:19):
optimistic after the real trailer, but I also was the
only one. People I've talked to are like, no, this
looks terrible. The recent reboots late in sequels like Coming
to America I heard was terrible. The latest Beverly Hills
cop was not good. I digress. Uh So Kevin Kevin

(02:19:42):
says he listens to the show, and he also he
plays competitive softball, competitive baseball for a long period of time.
He's not a fan of Ben Maller. What did Ben
Malin have to say this weekend? Well, what do you
think Ben Maler said? He said, there cheating. Yeah, I

(02:20:02):
mean he's trolling folks. Listen to me. He's on in
the middle of the night. He's got to stoke up
phone calls. He's got four to five hours to fill.
He hosts by himself. I actually think, like, you know,
if his fundamentals of radio are good, his takes are bad.
But you know, as far as setting up topics, energy,
I think he does all that good. So the reality

(02:20:23):
is this, he's trolling it.

Speaker 11 (02:20:25):
You have to be.

Speaker 1 (02:20:27):
You have to have a screw loose to work overnights. Yes,
you're just not going to be a mange. Like what
my goal was when I was in radio or to
become a radio was like, yeah, I really I think
I could be a great midnight to five host. I
had larger aspirations. I knew I didn't want a new
morning drive. I did it a couple of times. It's

(02:20:49):
not from me. You'd have a special kind of lifestyle
for the mat and I didn't want to do nights
because I want to spend time with my kids. I've
loved the midday sweet spot because it's just a little
bit of a different kind of an animal day drinkers. Yeah,
but Kevin love you very much. He says he is
really deranged and probably should be in a rubber room
with wearing a straight jacket. Okay, Then he says later on,

(02:21:12):
he goes, anyway, I'm not listening to seven on anymore.
When that d head is on the air, they should
just replay our show. Yeah, it wouldn't be We'll get
Jonathan on that he didn't have anything else to do. Yeah,
that's some more podcasting news. The reality is this, we're
probably his second biggest market. He's on in LA for sure,

(02:21:34):
m hm. I don't know if he's on in San Francisco.
I don't know if he might be on in Dallas,
but that would be I'm not for sure. Houston, I
think is his second biggest market. And he's not gonna
rip on LA because that's where he broadcasts a show from. Yes,
and it's a more it's a more of an evening
time slot in Los Angeles with the time difference. The

(02:21:55):
Astros have been his go to b slap four seven
years and or now, give or take, and he knows
it pisses you off exactly, and he's gonna keep doing
it because he knows that you're still listening. People he's
doing he's trolling. He's doing stick. Yeah, which I'm not
stick radio guy. I know you aren't either, mat now,

(02:22:17):
some people are. I don't care for it, and that's
fine if that's your deal, if you're doing shtick whatever.
But he's doing shtick. It's not it's not real. It's trolling.
I met him one time. It was at a Clippers
Rockets game. He came by and said hello, I was
doing the game and he came by it half time
and said, oh, he's fine to me. I mean again,
I just you have to understand when you work midnight

(02:22:38):
to five or one to five, whatever the hours are
eleven to three that specific time, that's one to five
hour time. You're just built differently. So is he gonna
say wacky crazy things? Yes? Is he gonna have wacky
crazy collars? Yes, he's got four hours to feel by himself.
As you mentioned, where a big market he knows he's

(02:22:59):
gonna get reaction. Yeah, just put on the Matt Thomas
Show podcast with Yeah, well I'm sorry with Ross. Yeah,
especially when I'm not here and he felt and you
forget all the bits of the show we did them.
I didn't forget them. I just forgot to tease them.

Speaker 4 (02:23:17):
You did.

Speaker 1 (02:23:17):
I don't just I just don't get it sometimes you
forget to tease. Yes, we did okay, good, Yeah, yeah,
we did everything, all right. I can't remember Gordy's it
was something about SEC football. Imagine that here. Gordy's like, yeah,
I'm gonna truck it up to Atlanta and really struggle
to get all these guests. You're going because you just
want to hang out with your fellow SEC Hawks. No,
he's gonna be working, Matt. Gordy is such a frawl

(02:23:38):
when it comes to that. That's not true, because I
went on though a couple of those trips. Last week.
You went with him to SEC No no, no no,
and baseball Oh oh yeah. Now last year they were
out in two games, so we didn't go anywhere. Yeah,
but the year before we were well, I didn't do anything,
and we didn't do anything in Minneapolis. But work and Arlington.
I mean, what were we gonna do there anyways? So

(02:23:59):
let's figure out where you're could be going this year.
Let's do it. If the playoffs were to end today, season,
you know me, I'm standing mister, season ends today, guys,
I am all about that. The Astros would be the
number two seed. They would then take on the winner
of the four or five wild card, which at this

(02:24:22):
moment is the wild Cards would be Yankees Yankees rays
games to be played. Well, they both have identical records
of forty nine and forty one. I don't know who
has the season advantage home field. Let's presume that let
is go Yankees. Who cares? So do you want Yankees
Tampa Bay? Or do you want to drop to the

(02:24:44):
three seed but still but then have to play in
the first year? I do love Seattle. I think if
you're the Astros, you want to stay in the top two.
I think the wild card really no, it is, there's
no question. First we get to play two extra games
or three extra games. Yes. Secondly, you're gonna burn pitching

(02:25:06):
out in a wild card series when you can go
use that starting pitching and get everybody healed up, get
some people off their feet. You mean to tell me
that jose Ol Tuvey wouldn't appreciate our Jeremy Payne you
for that matter, or if Jordon comes back, wouldn't appreciate
four or five days off the field. They would absolutely
any lingering hand soreness. We're all good lingering. It's still there. Yeah,

(02:25:30):
what if it never never left? So if he's got
a if you've got a permanent tingle, then he's in trouble.
Permanent what tingle? You know what tingling means? You sound
like you I've got tingling? You got permanent tingling? Yeah?
It depends on who walks in a room. One three

(02:25:51):
Unbelieve it or not? Is up next? All things about
Ringo Star happy? Does he tingle make you tingle? He
does not make me tingle? Are you sure? I mean
his music's good?

Speaker 7 (02:26:02):
I like that.

Speaker 1 (02:26:05):
I wouldn't say he's tingling. Okay, Well, uh, I got
a way for people to get their tingleback. Man, Well,
I can't wait to hear this. No, we made a
major mistake here. We have not played one Ringo Star
song today. We all live in the yellows of moan.
You know what I want you to play the song

(02:26:27):
whenever he wrote down when he was on an ls
D trip. It don't come easy. Go get the song
and play a little bit of a hero. Let's give
us some people with a stole career of one Joe
Starkey was is that his name? George Starky? I think
now it's not a question.

Speaker 2 (02:26:40):
I don't know.

Speaker 1 (02:26:41):
Yeah, give you don't come easy, Ringo star This is
a sir, Richard Stark Richard starking at George, give us
a little It don't come easy, Jonathan. When you get
a second yep cuts some number one hits or did he?
But to find out here I'm believing or not?

Speaker 10 (02:27:00):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (02:27:00):
This is a jam, isn't that? Drums nineteen seventy Arross?
We love this song? Good background, vocals, the vocal, the

(02:27:22):
lyrics are not great, but it is what it is.
I would say easily fourth place lyricists and the Beatles easily.
One verse. Here we go, Jonathan, give us a review
after this. That's great stuff for you to go. I'm
listening to Ring on the way home. Screw the eighteen.

(02:27:48):
Oh all right enough, okay, it took me a little bit.
It's a little in the groove, bab I'm amost saving
you some songs. Also a fourth place singer in the Beatles.
Ringo stars on the I'm not even gonna say that,
but okay he is on the Beatles. Okay, yes, you

(02:28:08):
know what? And do you disagree with me? Fourth place
singer and fourth place songwriter the Beatles. Yes, Oh wait,
somebody's gotta be four. We have four grades. Somebody's got
to finish last in that group. No, I gain the
three ahead of them are all greats. So who's the
Who does Ringo sing better than?

Speaker 5 (02:28:26):
No?

Speaker 1 (02:28:26):
It doesn't. I'm just saying, no, okay, who does he
write songs better than?

Speaker 6 (02:28:29):
No?

Speaker 4 (02:28:30):
No?

Speaker 1 (02:28:30):
I mean, yeah, okay, that's all I'm just stating. Effect. Yeah,
give me the great career in the Uh oh you
another one?

Speaker 4 (02:28:39):
No?

Speaker 1 (02:28:40):
I don't know this is you're sixteen. I don't think
you can play anymore, can you? It feels kind of inappropriate. Yeah,
it was a different time. You're sixteen in nineteen seventy three.
Don't don't give any information and there may that may
be a question, and believe it or not. Today So
that was a cover of a Sherman brother This song, anyways,

(02:29:01):
written by the Sherman Brothers. So he didn't write it. No,
here's a cover five minutes up and go on the show.
What should we do?

Speaker 3 (02:29:10):
Wait?

Speaker 1 (02:29:11):
Should play America's fastest growing sports radio game show. We
simply called it beat Believe It or Not? And here's
how it works. You'll call seven one three two one
two five seven natti seven one three two one two
five seven ninty. Today's edition of Believe It or Not
is all things about one of the all time greats

(02:29:32):
Ringo Sir Ringo star, right I rated. I'll read your
statement about Ringo statements completely neuterly accurate. You'll say this,
believe it our statements, he RONI is full of bunking
man up. You'll say this to Believe or Not's in
a row about a Ringo star wins your prize? What
are you playing for today, Jonathan? A pair of tickets
to see the Psychedelic Furs live on July twelve, Blues

(02:29:54):
tickets onest on no ticketmassa dot com. And of course
