You should see the emails I was getting yesterday at
four or five o'clock. They were all my typical Thursday
and Friday emails I get, meaning almost everyone and their
brother was preparing to be off today to get themselves
a four four day weekend.

Speaker 3 (02:05):
Yes, and that's not just hard. It feels like a
lot of people. Yeah, that's very today.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
I'm here to judge. Okay, we have to be here,

a number of different giveaways, including Gordy can I say
the big price.

Well, I didn't bring those, but okay.

Speaker 5 (02:51):

Speaker 1 (02:51):
They gotta We got them reprinted. They're on the back
back backwarder slips. All right, So we're hanging out at
Pizza and Pints. You want to get in you can
seven one three, two, one two five seven ninety is
the phone number seven one three two one two five
seven ninety. It is in Anything Goes Friday on the
program sounds like the Rockets are getting together an NBA

(03:15):
record seven team trade together for the Kevin Durant deal.
I'm silent, gord He's taking a selfie of us for
social media, okay. And then you have the Astros of course,
continuing to do their thing and anything you guys want
to get to at seven one three two one two
five seven Nighty. It is a holiday weekend. It is
a getaway Friday on a Thursday. Here on The Matt

(03:38):
Thomas Show with Ross So. As Gordy mentioned, we do
have the Astros in action in Colorado. They get the
two wins in two games, they have clinched the series.
They continue to rack up series wins, haven't lost a
series in over a month. They go for this sweep
today with Brandon Walter on the Hill. They're minus two

(03:59):
hundred favorites in that one. But Gordy jord on setbacks.
Everybody's all upset. I'm seeing these, uh these pictures floating
on the internet of him getting on a plane coming
back to Houston. I don't know what to believe. There
but we'll see what happens with that. But the Astros
just keep winning ball games. They're fifty two and thirty four. Unfortunately,

(04:21):
the Royals couldn't get it done for us last night
in Seattle. But seven games ahead of the Seattle Mariners.
I mean, with everything that's going on, they keep on winning.
They've won three in a row, They've won eight of
their last ten. Astros just keep on pulling up dubs
they do.

Speaker 4 (04:38):
It's look, I don't want to get overly excited. It
was the the Lowly Rockies, who stink so they're horrible,
but sixteen hits. I mean that was basically as Cooper
Hummel and Shaye Whitcombe and all these guys.

Speaker 3 (04:52):
Shay Whitcomb hits his first big league.

Speaker 1 (04:53):
Home run, Yeah, four and fifty feet.

Speaker 3 (04:55):
Cam Smith going getting three hits.

Speaker 4 (04:57):
I mean it was basically the Space Cowboys are beating
the Colorado Rockies. Now, I will say Hunter Brown, not
his best outing of the year, gives up a couple
of runs to the to the Lowly Rockies, but but
still continues to be awesome. He's basically an automatic dub
when he goes out there and credit Bennett's Susa too

(05:17):
on a night where you've basically used Josh Hater so
much in the past week. I want to say Wex
said something like how many saves is Hater having like
the last week it's like five or six.

Speaker 3 (05:29):
Yeah, so it's something crazy.

Speaker 4 (05:31):
So anyway, so Bennett Sussa comes in and he gets
the job done with a three run lead, but well
ends up being one of two run win but no
Rocky stink and you're able to a chance to go
for a sweep today. Who's on the mound today?

Speaker 3 (05:49):
Walter?

Speaker 4 (05:49):
Okay, he's been Look he's been a pleasant surprise. That's
a name that it basically picked up off the scrap heap,
and that dude's been awesome. Like I've been very impressed
with Bennett Sussa, with Uh, Brandon Walter. But you know, look,
win today because I just want to set up for
this weekend Ross going to Dodger Stadium. It's it's a
tough place to play show heo Tani. All those players

(06:12):
they got, Like I said it to Sean and UH
and Dan an hour ago. To me, my expectations for
that one is just don't get swept. I know how
great thatsher has been playing, but it's it's Dodger Stadium.
In Dodger Stadium July fourth weekend, there's gonna be a
ton of Dodger fans there. It's gonna be stupid boo
birds for a round toovey and you know, uh and

(06:34):
late and let's be Lance McCullers is going Friday.

Speaker 3 (06:37):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (06:38):
I mean again, I don't want to say I don't
have confidence in them, but I just it's one of
those things where I feel like, just win one of
the three this weekend. So that's why I feel like
today's a must win. Like today, I must win games,
you know what I mean.

Speaker 3 (06:52):
I'm not I'm not really said, but like if you
sweep the Rockies, losing two out of three at Dodger
Stadium is more powerful.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
You don't feel a lot better. Okay, I get you,
but you know how I hate that phrase. But yeah,
you got McCall Was it mccullors. Didn't he have a
good start in Los Angeles like after everything broke in
twenty twenty?

Speaker 3 (07:10):
Was it or some of the cardboard cutouts?

Speaker 1 (07:12):
Yeah? And uh, okay was it then? I can't remember
because it.

Speaker 3 (07:16):
Was it was? It was when they were maybe it
was twenty one.

Speaker 1 (07:19):
The crowds came back. Yeah, okay, and I think he
was good, right, Did he have a really good start
there or something like that? But I mean that was also.

Speaker 4 (07:26):
Twenty Was that at minute made with the cardboard cutouts
when Joe Kelly did the Poudy face to Carlos Korea?

Speaker 1 (07:33):
Yeah, I'm thinking of maybe it was. But I was
also a major injury and multiple setbacks ago for Lance
mccullor's junior, and he was not good his last time out.
But hopefully he can bounce back. But then you've got
Frommer on Saturday in Colton Gordon on Sunday.

Speaker 3 (07:47):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (07:47):
August third, twenty twenty one, went at Dodger Stadium. Lants
mccullors went six and two third shutout innings with nine strikeouts.
Let's Castros won that game three to nothing.

Speaker 1 (07:57):
Okay, if you can just do that again, Okay, Like
I said, it's only was four years ago.

Speaker 3 (08:01):
So yeah, and Choho Tani was not a Dodger.

Speaker 1 (08:04):
So oh wow, h he was a he was a toiling.

Speaker 3 (08:07):
With the Angels.

Speaker 4 (08:07):
You just walk him when he could, I'd walk him, no,
stack the bonds tree, dude, Yeah, walk him.

Speaker 1 (08:12):
So Freddie Freeman, Mookie Bets can come up. I don't
know about all that, all right, So we already got
to get a break. That's how much fun we're having
here on the Matt Thomas Show with Ross without Matt Thomas.
Chris Gordy's here. We got to talk about this weekend.
Didn't even mention a couple of interesting stats about why
the Astros are where they are. There are two big reasons.

(08:33):
I'll give you those when we come back. Phone lines
are open if you want to get in seven to
one three two one two five seven ninety seven one
three two one two five seven ninety We're with you
from Pizza and Pints at Carbock Brewing. Will be with
you up until Astros on deck at one o'clock. It's
Chris Gordy. It's me Ross Virea with the on SportsTalk seven.
Out of your Home for your Houston Astros ten nineteen

(08:55):
am here on sports Stock seven ninety back with you
on the Matt Thomas Show with Raw without Matt Thomas.
Chris Gordy here is here hanging out with me at
Pizza and Pints. It's effectively an extended edition of the
Crawford box cast which you can catch for free Gordy
on the I Heart Radio app.

Speaker 4 (09:13):
That you can and we got plenty to get into
with the with the Houston Astros as get another win
man again. Hunter Brown improves to nine and three on
the season. Goes six innings of two run ball, eight strikeouts,
one hundred and two pitches. Steven Okert with a clean inning,
keglob Bart with a clean inning, Bennett Suso with gives

(09:35):
up a run of the ninth, but no harm, no foul.
Astros went five to three last night, and I mean,
this is wild Ross. It's another Nastro's just had a
five game win streak that got snapped against the Cups.
Now they're on a three game win streak. It feels
like they've been on a lot of wind streaks lately.

Speaker 1 (09:50):
It's it's nuts, yes, And as I mentioned going into
the break, two big reasons, of course, the bullpen. I mean,
it's just been great and we were so worried about
what's gonna what was it gonna be. Outside of Josh
Hater and Brian Abray, you and other guys have stepped up.
You mentioned Bennett Susa getting another save last night, and

(10:11):
you had I mean even Caleborward, who hasn't been great,
I mean he went out there and had a one,
two three inning for you. Stephen Ocherd has been really good.
You go up and down the list of the relievers,
and it's just been one of the best bullpens in baseball.
Another reason, how about this. I heard Robert Ford, I believe,

(10:31):
or Steve Sparks mentioning it, or maybe both of them
on the broadcast last night. The Astros have won ten
out of ten of from Ervaldez's last ten starts, and
they have won seven in a row of Hunter Brown's
last seven starts. So seven in a row they've won
when Hunter Brown started ten in a row with from Ervaldez.

(10:52):
If you go back to May seventh, when those two
guys start, they are eighteen and two. Those guys have
been bringing it. And I know, you know, there's been
a lot of question marks with those other guys and
the Colton Gordons and the Ryan Gusto's and all that
type of stuff. But eighteen and two in the last
twenty starts combined of from ber Valdez and Hunter Brown,

(11:14):
It's like where would they be without those guys, where
would they be without the bullpen. They certainly wouldn't be
anywhere close to they are. They're eighteen games above five
hundred now, seven games ahead of the Seattle Mariners.

Speaker 3 (11:24):
It's just crazy.

Speaker 4 (11:25):
I mean, it's it's it's nuts so that they're doing
what they're doing again.

Speaker 3 (11:30):
You you're playing the Colorado.

Speaker 1 (11:33):
Rockies that just want to yes, yes, yes, I mean.

Speaker 4 (11:36):
To sweep the Phillies. The way you did with dominant
pitching was incredible. To take two out of three against
a really good Cups team was great. I mean, it's
wild ross when you look at the standings and see
they're just a game and a half back at Detroit,
who I believe split a double header yesterday for best
record in the American League.

Speaker 3 (11:56):
I'm just telling you right now.

Speaker 4 (11:58):
When today, if they can take two out of three
against the Dodgers, that would be crazy.

Speaker 3 (12:04):
I think I think they're.

Speaker 4 (12:05):
Gonna take two out of three against the Guardians and
two out of three against the Rangers. I think there's
a chance we're talking to the Astros in first place
in American leg go to the All Star break.

Speaker 1 (12:13):
Woo, you're getting spicy with it now. I'm just saying
I feel like at some point, and you know, people
get mad at me when I'm not one hundred percent
blind Homer, But I just have to tell you how
I feel. I mean, at some point, I mean, I
guess we should just keep on enjoying this ride while

(12:34):
it's here. They did get sixteen hits yesterday. But I mean,
when you're going with I'm a Walker turning things around.
He's got five hits in two games, by the way,
gut feeling hit already in two games of the series,
Jonathan Allen, I want to congratulate you. You said Christian
Walker was gonna have five hits in the Colorado. Yeah,
he's already got five hits that he can go over today,

(12:56):
and that's a dub for you. I want to give
you your props on that. So, I mean it also
is against Colorado pitching. So we'll see what happens about
Christian Walker turning the corner. But I mean, Cooper Hummel,
Shay wickham Mauricio du Bond in this lineup, Diaz and
Walker haven't been great all season long. Thankful Esock Paradus

(13:17):
continues to be good. But I mean, you're going with
Esock Paratus and Jake Myers as your leadoff. What if
I'd plopped you to like it like February first, and
I would have been like, Hey, Gordy, right about the
All Star break, it'll be Paradis, Myers, Altuve, Cam Smith
as the top four of the Astros lineup, and you'd

(13:37):
be like, oh my god, how many injuries did they
have and how many games under five hundred are they? Yeah,
and here they are right now, and they're holding the
glue together for sure, But I'm a little worried about
how long they can keep this up. I'll feel a
lot better if it's only gonna be a couple of
weeks for Jeremy Panha, which I mean sounds like they're

(13:58):
optimistic and it and it is fortuitous in a way
that his rib injury, which is normally just a few
weeks for people about a month at the most, is
gonna happen with you. You get you get a little
bit of a buffer with that week of the All
Star break, so that's good and you can hold on
till he comes back. But I'm really getting wary of this, uh,
this Jordan Alvarez situation, and what's gonna happen then, Well.

Speaker 3 (14:20):
I said it was Sean and Dan earlier.

Speaker 4 (14:22):
I almost feel like he's on a side out of
mind right now, like I'm gonna I'm gonna play the
remaining whatever this season as if he's not coming back. Now,
that's a little bit on Dana Brown coming up with
the approaching dead trade deadline to think that way as well,
to think what if if Jordon doesn't come back. Look,
they've already said they're in the market for a left

(14:44):
handed bat. So if you can get a left handed bat,
well low pop, I mean I might almost I'm almost
willing to give up.

Speaker 3 (14:51):
An extra prospect just to say. And then again, if
Jordon does come back, it makes this line up that
much more dangerous. M hm. So yeah, again, like that's
how I kind of look at it. I'm almost like,
because here's the other thing, Ross, we saw a month
of Jordan.

Speaker 4 (15:07):
He didn't look like Jordon. He was you know, they
they said he was playing for the he wasn't good.
So I almost looking if I'm Joe Spatta, if I'm
Dana Brown, I can't bring back Yordon until I know
one hundred percent that he's ready to go, Like he's
gotta be one hundred.

Speaker 3 (15:23):
I don't want I don't want seventy five percent.

Speaker 6 (15:25):
Ord.

Speaker 1 (15:26):
Yeah, but they've already said they already said that they
weren't gonna let him swing a bat until he was
one hundred percent. And then he started swinging a bat
and he had a setback. Man, It's it's crazy.

Speaker 3 (15:34):
Yeah, I just again, I'm I got him. This team
is good enough that, like, we can win without him.

Speaker 4 (15:41):
I mean, you'd love to have him, don't get me wrong,
but I gotta, I gotta. I gotta move on without
Jordan mentally, just like we gotta, we gotta prepare this
team to win down the stretch.

Speaker 1 (15:51):
I'm not expecting them at all. I mean I don't
even Yeah, day to day, you're seeing the lineup posted.
I mean you're kind of numb to it at this point.
We've seen it for two months. Yeah, I don't ever
see the lineup posed to be like, oh man, you
know we're done, still out.

Speaker 3 (16:01):
Now hurts again, hopefully, What do you feel like a month?

Speaker 1 (16:05):
Yeah, I don't know, but I'm gonna say I looked
at a couple of rib injuries. We talked about it
on the show. I think when it happened, or maybe
it was two Monday or Tuesday. Uh, it seems like
about a month for everybody. Last year, Cody Bellinger came
back after two weeks, but then he talked about how
sore he was when he was swinging. But Penya was
saying he wasn't sore when he was swinging. He was

(16:26):
more sore when he was throwing. So that'll be interesting.
And also we wonder for a little bit. Yeah, I
would think I think that's a good idea because what
he's what you're saying in what he said is that
he was swinging, he was okay. And also think about
re injury as a shortstop. I mean, who who on
the baseball field dives around more than a shortstop Maybe

(16:47):
a center fielder. I mean it's about the same and
maybe more violent diving around for a centerfielder. But the
shortstop's got to be diving around all over there. You're
trying to cover a lot of ground. I mean, there's
a reason it's the most premium defensive position on the
field along with center field, because you're diving around. So
I would be kind of worried that he would get
in some kind of re injury there. So yeah, maybe
a couple of weeks he can DH. That spot is

(17:09):
obviously open, and that has given a lot of flexibility
to Joe Spotty. You don't want yord On out, but
he's been able to put a bunch of different guys there.
You had Shay Wickham there last night because he's used
to hitting in the altitude in the PCL and he
can do that in Colorado, and then he did it
last night with that four hundred and fifty foot bomb.
So hopefully a couple of weeks, maybe some dhing, and

(17:30):
then Jeremy Paenney can get back out there at Shortstop. Thankfully.
Right now you have you have Mauricio Dubon taking over
that shortstop spot. But after that, I mean, heaven forbid
something happened to him. I don't even know who'd be
at Shortstop. They put Jack Zach Short there for a
couple innings last night.

Speaker 3 (17:49):
I mean, if something happened with through Bond and he
would be out for a little bit of time, I
think you would, uh. I think Bryce Matthews would have
to get the call up.

Speaker 1 (17:59):
Back in then he's in the top one hundred MLB
pipeline just announced.

Speaker 3 (18:02):
He's going to be playing the Futures Game coming up.

Speaker 1 (18:04):
He's in the Futures Game. He was there Minor Leaguer
of the Month and he's number ninety eight on the
top one hundred prospects list.

Speaker 4 (18:10):
Oh, I gotta mention that too, and if we get
a chance, it might be worth replaying WEX. And I
had Cam Smith on yesterday on the A team and he,
I mean, the kid is just light years ahead of
where we thought he would be. But I brought it
up to him. I said, Cam, in another year, they
just announced the Futures roster, I said, in another universe,
you're in the Astros organization.

Speaker 3 (18:31):
And you're getting named to the Futures Game.

Speaker 4 (18:33):
Yeah, and we're talking about and excited about the future
of Cam Smith one day being an Astro. Instead, this
dude makes the opening day roster. Yes, and what batted
three hundred basically this past month.

Speaker 1 (18:46):
Yeah, he's hitting I mean overall, even his overall numbers
right now.

Speaker 3 (18:49):
He's batting clean up a rookie, a guy a year ago.
The College World Series just wrapped up.

Speaker 4 (18:54):
A year ago, he was playing for Florida State in
the College World Series, and now he's batting clean up
for the Houston Astros who Al Wes leading Houston Astros
second best record in the American League.

Speaker 3 (19:06):
Houston Astros. It's just crazy to me.

Speaker 1 (19:08):
Yeah, you know, people talk about like applying for jobs
they're not qualified for and then they just learn on
the job. Now, of course Cam Smith was qualified, but
I mean he was. It was a rush job, and
it took him a little while, and he he was
a little bit slow to start the first I don't
know month, but man, he's he has been spectacular this
last month of the season, like you said, and the

(19:29):
numbers are great and the numbers bear it out. He's
been great in right field from the get go. We
were wondering how he was going to be there kids
a phenom, and as you said, you were talking to
him and I heard some of that interview as well,
and I've heard him talking to the media. He just
sounds wise beyond his years. That's part of the reason
the Astros did get him up to the major leagues
because they knew he'd be able to take the lumps

(19:50):
and take it mentally, as it's a mental battle just
as much as as a physical battle, especially for position
players and especially for someone learning a new position, and
then the cat and mount game of going up against
the best pitchers on the planet's great.

Speaker 4 (20:03):
Did you hear Joe spot To say he doesn't have
bad at bats? Yeah, Like that's what's so crazy is
last night? Uh his third hit, it was like this
pitch he goes up and gets and hits it so
hard at the shortstop that he can't even handle it
and it goes and bounces in the center field like
he just man, he puts up good at bats?

Speaker 1 (20:23):
Yeah, he Uh, let's see. Oh man, it just popped away.

Speaker 5 (20:26):
I had.

Speaker 1 (20:26):
The last last twenty games, he's been hitting three seventy
two with one thousand ops with four home runs. So
he's got seven home runs on the season, but four
of them have come in the last twenty games. He
is really starting to.

Speaker 4 (20:40):
When we come back. There was a moment last night.
I was very scared for you me.

Speaker 1 (20:45):
Yes, oh okay, I think I know where you're going
with this. We'll talk about it when we come back.
Look at Chris Gordy with the professional radio teas. He
is here, Matt Thomas is not. We are at Pizza
and Pines. It opens up at eleven o'clock. We should
have some tickets to give away if you want to come,
say hello. But even if we don't, we got hot pizza.
They got cold beer as well. We're here at Carbock

(21:06):
Brewing and pizza and pints. You want to get in
the phone lines, you can seven one three two one
two five seven ninety. I say, reason number one the
Astros are where they are is the bullpen. Reason number
two is Hunter Brown and from ber Valdez. What say you?
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety. The
phone number here on the Matt Thomas Show with Ross

(21:27):
with you until one to forty ahead of the Ashtros
and the Rockies here on Sports Talk seven ninety your
home for your Stros. All right, we're back on the
Matt Tamas Show with Ross, Ross, Viria, Chris Gordy with you.
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety. Is
the phone number. Seven one three two one two five

(21:49):
seven ninety. Congratulations two. The Al Pitcher of the Month
for June, that would be Hunter Brown, well deserved, of course,
he has been fantastic and it would kind of touch
on this briefly, Gordy when we were recapping the game
last night. Astros win five to three fifty two and

(22:10):
thirty four on the season now, but to me, there
was a game I'd have to pull up the game
logs last year. I'm not exactly sure where it was
where he was struggling. Now, last night it was his
curveball that it was just unfortunately not spinning in the altitude.
He talked about it. He was asked directly, why do

(22:31):
you think the curveball wasn't effective? And he just flat
out side it was the altitude. And so what happened
was he just started throwing a bunch of gas and
he threw his hardest pitch that he's thrown all year
in his career. And he's tried to be he's been
he's talked about trying to hit triple digits, but ninety
nine point eight miles per hour on a fastball. And

(22:52):
it happened in a start in the middle of last
year when he was turning things around where he didn't
have his best stuff and he's still put in a
quality start. It was like six innings a shutout or
one run ball or something. And then the last night
against Colorado, again, we do have to keep throwing in
the qualifier, Like you say, it was the Colorado Rockies.

Speaker 3 (23:10):
But to be.

Speaker 1 (23:10):
Effective at altitude, you gotta ditch the curve ball. You
gotta figure something out that's ace stuff where you don't
have it because you're gonna go out there twenty five
thirty times a year and you're not gonna have your
best stuff twenty five thirty times. So Hunter Brown still
able to be effected the six innings, two runs given up,

(23:31):
eight strikeouts, a quality start, having to ditch some of
his breaking stuff and still getting it done. That is
the mark of an ace, it is.

Speaker 4 (23:39):
And yeah, it's it's funny with the qualifier in there.
That's like a few weeks ago where Let's Colors had
what the twelve strikeouts and I kept say that it's
Oakland A's okay, like Sacramento, but also it was good,
but you know, you got to say who it was against.

Speaker 1 (23:53):
But yeah, but the A's have a well, okay, their
team ops is like top ten. But that's also because
the ball flies out in Sacramento. But yeah, but gohe.

Speaker 3 (24:00):
Brent Rooker has been very good.

Speaker 4 (24:01):
But no, it's again, it was a great night for
Hunter Brown gets his ninth when crazy to think he.

Speaker 3 (24:10):
Could have ten wins going into the All star Break.
I mean a twenty win was the last Aster's twenty win?

Speaker 1 (24:16):
Uh pitcher, Uh okay, I'm gonna try to do this
without looking up the last twenty game winner. I did
when in nineteen when cole And and Verlander finished one too?
Did I think Verlander just got there and Cold didn't.

Speaker 3 (24:35):
Yeah, we'll have to look it up.

Speaker 4 (24:36):
But regardless, Uh, pitching's been all been been outstanding. But
I was scared for you at one point last night.

Speaker 3 (24:43):
I'm sorry.

Speaker 1 (24:44):
The other way around. Verlander got there and Cold and
I think, let me.

Speaker 3 (24:46):
Look gotchall go ahead.

Speaker 4 (24:48):
Sorry, when Jake Myers took one two, I mean he
turned his back and it almost I was like, please
only hit him in the ribs. Please don't let this
be the same exact thing that happened to Jeremy. It
was like, luckily he stayed in the game and was
able to, you know, play well.

Speaker 1 (25:08):
So but it was a little scary there. Yeah, it
was scary. He stayed in the game. We'll see if
we hear anything as far as a follow up, because
sometimes guys do stay in games. You've got the adrenaline,
there's not as much swelling. You give it a day
and maybe some swelling will pop up. It also is
a day game, so it's a quick turnaround, so that's

(25:28):
certainly something I would say that I'm keeping an eye
on for the lineup today as far as I mean,
we know a lot of the guys that are already
going to be out, but with Jake Myers getting hit yesterday,
I'll be curious to see and we should know within
the next couple of hours here when the lineup should
be posted if Jake Myers is going to be in
that lineup because he was hit by that pitch did
stay in the game, but who knows, swelling could go up.

(25:50):
And it's almost like the way that things have been
going with the Astros at this point, I'm almost expecting
another injury. It seems like it's happening every day at
this point. Dude, you're dropping life like flies. It's ridiculous.

Speaker 3 (26:03):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (26:04):
Yeah, twenty nineteen was was what we were thinking of.
Justin Verland with twenty one wins, Garrett Cole with twenty
so they both they both did twenty win and they
both I mean, if there was any year where you
should have two cy youngs, I mean they both deserved it.

Speaker 1 (26:18):
That Yeareah they finished one too.

Speaker 4 (26:20):
It was pretty silly, but I mean that's how And yeah,
Wade Miley who went fourteen and six that season, Zach
Greenki who had who went eight and one. Brad Peacock
got you seven wins that year. Like, I mean that
pitching staff was was outstanding. And that's what's crazy to
think it's this staff when you look at twenty you know,
the twenty twenty five.

Speaker 3 (26:40):
Staff Hunter brand fromber are so good.

Speaker 4 (26:42):
But to have these other dudes step in it, I mean,
Brandon freaking Walter and Colton Gordon, it's it's amazing they're
getting they're getting by.

Speaker 1 (26:51):
Yeah, Brandon walterers Walter's numbers have been good. Gustos took
a little bit of a back seat. I think Colton
Gordon now he struggled a little bit and it was
Colloro and he was having some issues as well. And
everybody does his era's around like four fifty ish, all
of four thirty seven or something like that. Yeah, let
me see four thirty seven so they'll see then that's

(27:13):
that's kind of where that's kind of where I get worried.

Speaker 5 (27:16):
Cordy.

Speaker 1 (27:16):
I'm like, is the other shoe gonna drop with all
this stuff that keeps happening, and how how how are
they gonna keep this to get Well, we.

Speaker 4 (27:23):
Saw it a little bit that Cub series or I
mean mccullar's got blown up.

Speaker 1 (27:28):
Yeah, I'm worried about that.

Speaker 4 (27:30):
There was well, but in all honesty though, what was
the channeler room tweet? He was dreadful against the eight,
the Reds and the Cubs. Yeah, but all the other
games he's pitched, he had a two to fifty nine
era like he's been good.

Speaker 3 (27:42):
Yeah, he's been good. Like you can't let those two
blow ups overshadowed all the goodies brought.

Speaker 1 (27:47):
To He's still been getting a ton of swing and missed. Also,
two all three of the home runs that were hit
in that game were not a home run in fifteen
or more ballparks. I think it was thirteen. It was
like one that was like a true Crawford box, like
literally like out of one ballpark, and it was it
was dyiking, and then one was the the Kyle Tucker

(28:08):
one was out of like seven ballparks.

Speaker 3 (28:10):
I think.

Speaker 1 (28:10):
So if you wanna go half glass, half full, even
if the glass is only like forty percent full, I'm
gonna do that. I mean, I've been on mc cullers
Island this whole season. I ain't hopping off right now.
We'll see what happens, though, should be an electric atmosphere
at Dodger Stadium tomorrow.

Speaker 4 (28:27):
And Colton Gordon, you know, last time out on Tuesday
was his.

Speaker 3 (28:32):
First, his first kind of hiccup of a start.

Speaker 4 (28:35):
It was the first start he couldn't get through five
elvis like last one, two, three, four, five, six, seven starts.

Speaker 3 (28:41):
Yeah, no, he came one out shy.

Speaker 4 (28:43):
But that's pretty crazy that you had seven straight starts
at Colton Gate. Gordon gave you five innings of basically
two run ball and this one was four runs and
four and two third.

Speaker 3 (28:53):
But even that you still won the game. So, like,
that's what's crazy about it is bullpin. It was pin bull.

Speaker 4 (28:58):
It was a game where Colton go didn't have his
best and you still got the win.

Speaker 1 (29:02):
Yeah, that's that's where the bullpen has been factoring, and
they have been excellent all year long. Besides that one,
we can get it against Tampa Bay and a lot
of that was Forrest Whitley giving up a ton of
runs and now he's off the team, and I think
he's off the Rays now too, so Bullpen excellent. And
then of course Hunter Brown and Farber Valdez have been huge.
They've won eighteen of the last twenty starts by those two,

(29:25):
ten of Frombers, eight out of ten of Hunter Browns.
All right, quick break here on the Matt Thomas Show

Speaker 1 (30:55):
Yeah, make sure you come by and you say hi.
And what are we gonna hear about those.

Speaker 3 (31:00):
Astros tickets they were giving away.

Speaker 4 (31:02):
Oh wait, we're waiting, so we have we're waiting to
hear back.

Speaker 1 (31:06):
Okay, I don't want to make any false promises.

Speaker 3 (31:07):
Oh, we're supposed to have some ups.

Speaker 1 (31:10):
At some point, we'll be giving away some Astros tickets
here on the program. We are at Pizza and Pints
until one forty pm. We're going to Astros on deck mode.
At one o'clock. You got the Astros in the Rockies
at two ten, Astros going for a sweep. They continue
to play well. Uh, the bullpen continues to do their thing.

(31:32):
We mentioned Bennett's SUSA picking up. I mean we he
was like good at the end of what twenty three
when he had showed up and kind of came out
of nowhere for the Astros, and then and then he
was hurt. And then he was hurt. He had I
think it was thoracic outlet surgery, whatever that is. And
then he's been back in this year twenty six games,

(31:53):
two to zero, three saves, one point nine five ERA
and point eighty seven. Then whip. You think Dusty Baker's like, okay,
now you got all these lefties, what's the deal? Oker
Hater Sousa? Who else I'm missing? Brian King, It's like
all it's all lefties all the time out of the bullpen.

(32:13):
And he was like, can you just please give me
give me one lefty please?

Speaker 3 (32:18):
Who is this guy?

Speaker 1 (32:19):
He loved Brooks Raley, Yeah, one lefty besides Brooks Railey
were like, oh my god, here comes Brooks Raleigh because
Dusty was old school and he would just go platoon Lefty, righty,
no matter what. And I mean it was Brooks Raley season,
and we weren't usually.

Speaker 3 (32:35):
Too happy about it.

Speaker 4 (32:35):
Well, and and I want to be fair too for
all the people that were a year ago at this time,
we're going, I bet you wish you had Dusty. Now
we gotta give we gotta give Joe a spot.

Speaker 3 (32:46):
Of his credit. Ya has been awesome as a manager.

Speaker 1 (32:49):
Yeah, where's uh, where's fire Joe? Spot of guy? I
haven't seen. How's how's fire Joe spotted guy going? And
that was to give us a call seven one three ninety.

Speaker 3 (32:57):
That wasn't exclusive to Dusty.

Speaker 4 (32:58):
That was I mean, there were there were people who
when Dusty struggled.

Speaker 1 (33:04):
Yeah, you should have kept now you should have only
let Hinch be suspended for a year and kept him.

Speaker 3 (33:09):
Well, as he has the best record in the American least.
That's true. A J.

Speaker 1 (33:15):
Hinch is very good. But I mean I'm gonna I'm
gonna stay consistent until I hit the grave, especially when
it comes to baseball. It's the players. Joe A Spotta
can go to Bennett's SUSA and he's been great and
he can find the right pockets of the lineup for him,
but he's also got to go out there and perform.
And people were calling for a spot as firing earlier

(33:36):
in the season. Right there, he keeps going to Louise Contreres.
It's like he didn't have any other options in the bullpen.
A bunch of people were hurt, not ready to start
the season. I mean, it is what it is. So
I like Joe Spotta. I think his number one job
is to keep the guys motivated to play, keep it light,
and then put them in positions to succeed. He's done that,
but from there, it's like you just gotta let them

(33:58):
go out there and spread their wings and fly, all right,
And and they've been doing that and they've been really good,
and Joe spot is doing a good job. But I
mean it's it's down to the players in this bullpen
as well.

Speaker 4 (34:09):
Do we want to talk about Matthew Oaklam Matthew Oklam
o o quaenn oh o quam.

Speaker 1 (34:19):
Uh yes, I was gonna bring that up at the
start of next hour, so he yes, we will. We'll
talk about that in a couple of minutes.

Speaker 3 (34:28):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (34:29):
What Gordy is referencing I was talking about it earlier.
Internet rumors, believe them or not. That's what we are
going to have to try and figure out, because yes,
this is something that was sent to me. It was
sent to a lot of people around Houston, and now
even other listeners are getting in on the act. So

(34:51):
we will break that down when we come back. But
that is going to do it for our number one
of the Matt Thomas Show with Ross. Without Matt Thomas,
he is out volleyball dadding harder than anyone has volleyball
Dad in Dallas. Chris Gordy is here with me. We
are at Pizza and Pintes. They open up in a
couple of minutes. If you guys want to come by
and say hello. Phone lines are open at seven one

(35:12):
three two one two five seven ninety seven one three
two one two five seven ninety The Astros internet rumor
that is taking the Astros Twitter sphere by storm, we'll
talk about that next and hour number two of the
Matt Tomas Show with Ross.

Matt Thomas, as we broadcast live from Pizza and Pints
Carbrock Brewing. The doors opening up. If you want to
come by and say hello, you could do that. As
I said, Matt Thomas is out, Chris Cordy is with me,
and I gotta be honest. I was like in Friday

(39:47):
holiday mode, so I didn't tease this properly, but we
have of course, the regular Thursday guest Brian McTaggart of
astros dot com, MLB dot com, our weekly Thursday guest
here at eleven o'clock. Brian appreciate the time as always.
Let's go ahead and start with the Pitcher of the Month.
We were talking about this earlier. To me, one of

(40:09):
the big marks of an ACE is you don't have
your best stuff. You gotta ditch a pitch and figure
things out. That's what Hunter Brown did yesterday with the
curveball in Denver. He is a bona fide ace.

Speaker 5 (40:21):
Yeah, I don't think there's any doubt.

Speaker 14 (40:22):
I mean, he came into that start leading the major
leagues and era an opponent savage, which is pretty incredible.
But yeah, he admitted after the game, you know, his
curveball wasn't performing like it should have been just because
of the altitude, so he sort of had to change
things a little bit on the fly through the change
up a little bit more.

Speaker 1 (40:42):
But you know, he was solid.

Speaker 5 (40:44):
I mean he was a ninety something pitch, I think
ninety one pitches.

Speaker 14 (40:47):
After the fifth inning, they went back out got them
through six, which is really important because they were without
a couple of their key bullpen guys and picked up
his first win since June first, So it looks like
to me he's probably headed to All Star Game as well.

Speaker 5 (41:00):
He should be.

Speaker 4 (41:02):
What's crazy to me, Brian, is how this team is
able to do this night in and night out, that
even when some of their pitchers don't have their best stuff.
You know, we saw it from Colton Gordon the other night.
It was first start and I think seven starts where
he wasn't able to go full five and gave up
four and runs, and yet the Askers still find a
way to win.

Speaker 3 (41:20):
It's it's crazy.

Speaker 4 (41:22):
I mean, obviously, when you have the two front end
starters in Fromber and Hunter doing their thing is awesome.
But I'm just I'm wild about what they're getting out
of these other guys. And we're gonna get to see
Brandon Walter go today. But I mean, that's that's the
guy we had. His name wasn't even on the radar
a few months ago, and it's like he's come out
of nowhere and been great for him. It's it's pretty
shocking how they're they're getting this thing done right, it.

Speaker 14 (41:46):
Is, I mean, and then you know they call up
Jason Alexander another guy no one knows anything about. He
pitches really well, you know, uh, you know, big props
for their pitching coaches for getting these guys ready, I
mean every one of these guys. When they picked the
no name guy. You know, I say no name, but
not the household name guys. When they pitch, even like
you said, even when they're not great, they're they're keeping

(42:07):
the team in the game, and you know, give them
five innings and hand the ball over to that bullpen
and you know it's shut down time.

Speaker 5 (42:13):
So can they keep this up here over the final
three months, you know, who knows.

Speaker 14 (42:18):
But the good news for the Astros is they should
be getting a lot of you know, they're at least
some of their starters back healthy and uh, you know,
guys like rag Getty will be back. You know, Jabber
seems like he's trending towards coming back. And all of
a sudden, you got starting pitching depth. So that that'll
be a good problem to have if they can get there.

Speaker 1 (42:36):
Brian McTaggart with us here on Sports Talk seven to
ninety and of course, Brian, the big story overall this
week has been the the Jordan Alvarez saga and it
seems to unfortunately keep popping up with the Astros and
they're handling of things and the medical staff and all
that type stuff. Of course, we know a lot of
the fans are upset and all that, but just your perspective,
I mean, it does seem to me like a lot

(42:59):
of this is some bad luck. But at what point
do you say, is this just too much to be
a coincidence? Just what do you think about the way
that things have been handled with the Astros and some
of these injuries and then the latest with the jord
On Alvarez.

Speaker 14 (43:14):
Yeah, well, there's been a lot of pitching injuries around
the league. I mean, Astros, I think our third with
the most I L days. So there's there's a couple
of teams ahead of them in that regard to Dodgers
of one of them, So have a bunch of pictures
on the ile. Not ideal, but you know, some other
teams are going through the same thing. The Alvarez situation, yeah,
has got to be frustrating because that's twice now that

(43:35):
they were close and then he had a setback. You know,
I will say it's not like they they were pushing
him when they didn't think he was ready by everything,
they by everything that, you know, all the information they had,
especially the last time they thought that he was close,
and you know, Dana brown said Monday, they were thinking
about flying him to la this weekend, and then he
came in you know, Tuesday after taking some swings and

(43:58):
the hand was sore again. I mean, I think we'll
probably get an update on Alvarez today in Denver. I
mean I'm in the press box run now at course Field,
so it'll be in the clubhouse here in a few minutes,
so hopefully within the next hour, maybe Joe Spoder or
Dana Browner is here can give us an update to
see what's next for him. But it certainly appears like

(44:18):
the Astros might be without Alvarez for a little while.
But hey, they've been without him for two months and
they just keep on trucking. So the bigger thing I
think in the short term is getting Penya back and
putting him back.

Speaker 5 (44:31):
At the top of the lineup because they really miss
him as well.

Speaker 4 (44:36):
It's it's crazy too bright with the injury to Jeremy Payna.
I mean, we keep looking and saying how many more
injuries can they overcome? And you know Jake Myers gets
hit on the side last night. I think we all
kind of breathe a little bit, you know, pause a
little bit, going, oh my god, not another one.

Speaker 3 (44:52):
But luckily he stayed in the game.

Speaker 4 (44:54):
But I mean it does if you're Dana Brown, I mean,
he's been preaching for the last couple of weeks. You know,
we're looking a left handed bat, left handed bat, left
handed bat. I just almost wonder the approach if Jordon
is going to be out a significant amount of time,
which it just feels that way. I mean, does that
maybe escalate them a little bit more here at the
deadline to say, you know what, we have to get

(45:14):
a bat regardless.

Speaker 14 (45:17):
Yeah, Daniel, we asked Dana about that the other day
and he said, they go down Andrew really doesn't change
their thoughts at the trade deadline. They He's been on
record saying they need a left handed bat. The urgency
is there and it still is. So I think it's
pretty safe to say they're gonna get some kind of
bat to add to this lineup. The left handed bat.
They're not going to replace Jordan Alvarez for sure, but

(45:37):
they definitely I think they're nineteenth and runs per game,
So they definitely could use just another, you know, another
capable bat in there, especially one that can bat from
the left side, because even though they've they've called up
some guys here they can hit left handed in the
last couple of weeks, guys like Hubble, but they're still
very much right handed when it comes to the core

(45:58):
guys in the lineup, so they at a left handed
batt it to the deadline, I'm pretty sure.

Speaker 1 (46:03):
What do you feel about the pitching side. I think
it's kind of a tough situation because you got all
these guys who are coming back or look like they're
on track to come back, but then it's kind of
an unknown thing as far as setbacks or new injuries
popping up, and the deadline now being four weeks away
from today.

Speaker 14 (46:22):
Yeah, I think if they don't have any more injuries
to their pictures and they feel confident, they're gonna get
rig Getty back, and I think he would be the
first one to come back. I mean, he's still only
throwing bullpens, but you know, he's completely healthy.

Speaker 3 (46:34):
He's just on it.

Speaker 14 (46:35):
He's just building up right now like he's at spring training,
so he will be back. I think Javier's pretty far
down the road as well. I mean I have to
take a little bit of that with a little bit
of caution because some of these guys have suffered setbacks.
But if they can get Eric Getty and another one
of these other rehabbing pictures back at the end of
July early August, really no need to go get a

(46:56):
starting pitcher. I mean, the starting pitcher is gonna cost you,
you know what, three prospects last year at Kakuchi, so
the price on those is pretty high. And they have
six o my ails and for them are deep in
rehabs in Florida. So I don't think the urgency is
there for starting pitching. I think offense is definitely where
they need to bolster the lineup well.

Speaker 4 (47:16):
And I almost wonder too though, Brian, Like if you're
getting a bat or you're getting an arm, I almost
think you want to go rental as opposed to a
guy who would have multiple years of team control. Because
all these injured guys are going to be back next
year presumably you know, the Tommy young guys won't be
back at the start of the season.

Speaker 3 (47:33):
But like I just when you get back.

Speaker 4 (47:36):
Fully healthy, I mean, you know, in a perfect world,
you don't have any open positions position wise and all
that kind of stuff. So unless it's like a pure
upgrade where it's a guy, are we got three more
years of control, whatever, I almost think it'd be easier
to go rental and and easier to part with maybe
a middle tier prospect for our guy who's a rental.

Speaker 14 (47:56):
Yeah, I think you're absolutely right. I mean, I don't
think think they're going to get anybody. I think they're
gonna for a bat who they're you know, they're gonna
plug into the line.

Speaker 5 (48:02):
Up for the next three or four years.

Speaker 14 (48:04):
It's it's gonna be a guy who can you know,
hit six or seventh, or you know, someone's getting the
day off, can hit second, you know, just give you
another bat from the left side. It's gonna be have
to be somebody with some physitional versatility, just with the
way this roster set up, and like you said, some
guys are coming back off injury. Maybe someone that can
play second in outfield or or maybe first an outfield.

(48:26):
But uh, yeah, I mean, I I certainly agree with you.
I think it'll be someone you know, like a you know,
a Trey Mancini who's only here for a couple of months,
and uh, you know you hope to catch lightning in
a bottle.

Speaker 1 (48:39):
Brian McTaggart Astros dot com, MLB dot Com with us
here on Sports Talk seven ninety jose Al two of
a passing Jeff Bagwell last night on the Astros All
Time hit List. You've obviously been there covering his career.
I mean just we just did you love on Josel
twove what it's been like and and I think to
me personally, the hand eye coordination impresses me the most

(49:03):
about him. What about you? And what is it's been
like following him? And just an all time Astro is great.

Speaker 14 (49:10):
Yeah, he's got the best back to ball skills that
I that I've seen just daily close up. I mean,
you know, I didn't get a chance to see in
person anyway Wade Bogs or Tony Gwinn, but just seeing
how Tuva every day, his back to ball skills are
just super elite. And the thing that stands out for
me also is just how clutch it is. I mean,
look at his postseason numbers, they speak for themselves. But

(49:31):
even last night, like the hit to pass Bagwell, first
pitch to run single up the middle.

Speaker 5 (49:38):
I mean that you know that that hit won the game.

Speaker 14 (49:40):
I mean that's a huge hit in the grand scheme
of things, and that's just what he does. And I
know that his numbers have declined a little bit, but
I think the question now becomes can he get to
three thousand hits on me? I think he has a
really good shot. I was able to top the Bagwell
during the game yesterday and and I thought it was
It was funny. After the game Alt two, they said

(50:01):
Bagwell text him all the time about his swing and
if he takes a bad swing, Bagwell, Texan says.

Speaker 5 (50:06):
What the heck was that?

Speaker 14 (50:07):
So very There's not very many people that can criticize
Josel Tube, but Bagwell is one of them. And you know,
he's now passed him on the hits list. So he's
got some work to do to get to Bigio. But
I would not doubt that he's gonna get to three
thousand and past Vigio here in the next four or
five years.

Speaker 4 (50:25):
Tucker to Brian McTaggart, and Brian do want to overlook
today's game? Obviously, Astros go for a sweep against the
Rockies today This afternoon you'll hear that right here on
seven ninety. But looking a little bit ahead to this weekend,
going out to Dodger Stadium July fourth weekend, it's gonna
be a heck of a series. I'm sure you'll have
a lot of celebrities out there and that sort of thing.
But a big star for Lance mccullor's coming this Fridays.

(50:46):
He wants to balance back from that outing against the Cubs.
But what's crazy, Brian, The last two times Lance mccullors
has pitched at out there at Dodger Stadium. Last time
was August third, twenty twenty one, in a regular season
game where he went six and two third shutout innings.
Astros won that game three nothing, and then I believe
the time before that was Game seven of the World

(51:08):
Series in twenty seventeen. So it's a place mccullochs has
had success. But you know, you just look at that
daunting Dodger lineup and say, God, it's gonna be a
tough test.

Speaker 5 (51:18):
Yeah, very tough test.

Speaker 14 (51:19):
And you know Lance's is coming off you know, a
start that wasn't great, you know, his first start off
the IL. So but you know, Lance is a competitor,
and I guarantee you he's probably gonna be brought them
at the mouth for this chance to go out there
pitch it at Dodger Stadium. Yeah, he did start Game
seven and twenty seventeen. Didn't pitch deep in that game.
Also had an RBI in that game. If people don't remember,
it was kind of a it was kind of a

(51:40):
crazy game. But yeah, I mean, if they can go
to Dodger Stadium and win that series, then Dan, I mean,
I think they got a chance maybe to get the
number one seed in the American League. I mean, even
if they go to Dodger Stadium and don't win the series,
not the end of the world. The Dodgers are really good.
They're really good at home. Astros was shorthanded. It's gonna
be a really tough series for sure, But they do

(52:02):
have Frobervaldez doing in one of those games, and they've
won what ten consecutive starts he's pitched, So if they
can win his start and scratch out another win somewhere
and come home after a good road trip in good shape.

Speaker 5 (52:13):
Here a week out from the All Star Break.

Speaker 1 (52:17):
Brian McTaggart astros dot Com with us here on Sports
Talk seven. Honey, we appreciate the time as always, Brian,
let the folks know what you got up at the website.

Speaker 14 (52:26):
Yeah, I got some cool stuff up there. Like I said,
taught to Bagwell last night. Have a story on Bagwell
and Al two by sort of talking about each other
as they as Al two Bay passes him on the
hits list at a redd at Ama yesterday. Asked me
anything and I had to transcribe to that on the
website as well, So check that out.

Speaker 1 (52:45):
Okay, what was the craziest question you got or answered
the craziest question you answered? How about both the craziest
question you got in the craziest one you answered?

Speaker 14 (52:55):
Somebody asked me about my how I got started in journalism.

Speaker 5 (52:58):
I didn't answer because I don't think anybody cares. And
other than that, they were all pretty straightforward.

Speaker 14 (53:04):
If someone asked my favorite Astros player to cover of
all time and I said Lance Berkan, of course, So
oh okay.

Speaker 1 (53:10):
All right, well, thank you, Brian. Will check that out
at astros dot com.

Speaker 4 (53:12):
Appreciate it and get the Astros Beat emails.

Speaker 1 (53:15):
Your newsletter, baby, it's.

Speaker 14 (53:17):
Great newsletter came out yesterday or today but I can't remember,
but another one is coming out Saturday.

Speaker 5 (53:22):
That's gonna uh.

Speaker 14 (53:23):
I did an interview with Bryce Matthews talking about his
progress and the Futures game coming up.

Speaker 5 (53:28):
So that'll be in your inbox Saturday.

Speaker 1 (53:30):
Wow, you're you're officially the hardest working beat reporter on
the Astros Beat.

Speaker 14 (53:35):
All right, I'll take it out of the three and
I'm one of three.

Speaker 1 (53:39):
Thanks Bright, We'll touch you deable, but thank you. Appreciate it.
Brian mcdaggery great stuff with him as always.

Speaker 3 (53:47):
Was that awesome?

Speaker 1 (53:49):
Okay, I'm sorry, I thought you said something else. All right. Anyways,
we're gonna take a break on that note. Ross View
Chris Gordy with You. Matt Thomas is out, but it
is the Matt Thommas Show with Ross. You guys can
get in if you want to react to anything that
Brian had to say. We're here at Pizza and Pints
at Carboch Brewing and the phone lines were open at
seven one three two one two five seven ninety seven
one three two one two five seven ninety eleven twenty

(54:14):
in the am here on Sports Talk seven eighty Ross
via Rea with you at Pizza and pints on the
Matt Thomas Show with Ross without Matt Thomas. Chris Gordy
is here. Our guy Mark showed up. He's like, where's
those Ashros tickets? We're trying to hear back. I'm sorry,
We'll get We'll get some more details on that as
we go along. Appreciate you all listening. Appreciate Brian McTaggart
for joining. Phone lines open if you want to get in.

(54:36):
It's seven one three two one two five seven ninety
seven one three two one two five seven ninety So
we mentioned this before we hit our number two. Gordy,
there is an internet rumor floating around with somebody who
has put up a picture of Jordan Alvarez on a
flight to Houston.

Speaker 3 (54:57):
Yes, so this is a guy by the name of Matthew.

Speaker 1 (55:00):
O'quann Matthew o'quam ben.

Speaker 4 (55:03):
He's a singer, songwriter, a and m grad. So if
this is wrong, I'll blame the Aggies, I will. He's
a musician, so I mean he's got a pretty good
followings from Houston. He posted this earlier this morning. It
is a picture of Jordan Alvarez on a flight with
a cast on his right arm. Sitting next to an

(55:24):
older gentleman, and Matthew O'Quinn says, quote, here is Jordan
Alvarez last night, cast on directly from the man himself.
My dad asked, and he said, my ligament popped during
my rehab stint and I won't be swinging for six weeks.
I hope this finds you well, Astros fans. And so,
of course a lot of people took him the task.
They said fake. He said, I promise this is not fake.

(55:46):
They said, prove it. He said, how do I prove it?
And he took a screenshot of his group text with
his family yes and titled la familia, and it was
a picture of his dad with Jordon that said my
new travel buddy.

Speaker 3 (55:58):
So clearly his dad.

Speaker 4 (55:59):
Is sitting on a plane next to Yordan overs and
starts chatting him up. And that's what Jordan told him.
So I just find that funny. I mean, if if
that ends up being correct. One, it's funny that that
we we don't get the news from the team, yet
we get from Jord until some random got an airplane.

Speaker 3 (56:16):
And that and that makes it out there.

Speaker 4 (56:18):
But two, a lot of people connecting the dots here saying,
you know, that would basically put him out till you know,
mid August, you know, somewhere in that timeline. Again, don't
want to put a this is all speculation. This is
all from you know, a guy on Twitter saying his
dad talked to Jordan on a plane.

Speaker 3 (56:36):
Whatever. But again, like Brian McTaggart said earlier, we'll.

Speaker 4 (56:38):
Get an update, an actual update from the team, perhaps
later today, perhaps in the next hour with their open
clubhouse there in Colorado. But just one of those internet things. Again,
take everything, everything on the air with a grin of salt.
But this would appear to be pretty legit. I mean,
it is Jordan with a cast on his right hand
on an airplane, next to an older gentleman.

Speaker 1 (56:58):
Yeah, I have a couple things. Uh, it is a
the guy qualified that it was, I mean clarified that
it was a brace, not a cast. Yeah, so that
is good. Number one. It is on his right hand,
and that is the hand that is hurt for jord On. Yes,

(57:20):
but yord On, while he does speak and understand English,
he's talking to a stranger on a plane and telling
this person about his injury and his prognosis. That seems
a little bit like a bridge too far. Now, could
his dad have run into Jordon? Absolutely? But I mean,

(57:42):
are you you? First of all, I didn't even like
to talk to strangers on planes, and maybe it's different
of course because Jordon is a is a celebrity and
got recognized and they took a picture.

Speaker 4 (57:50):
To get and noticing the picture too. Jordan Scott headphones in,
but they're dangling over. He was listening, but then the dad,
I guess, kept bugging him and so he took He
did the nice thing.

Speaker 3 (58:00):
He took the earbuds out.

Speaker 1 (58:02):
And yourdon's got wired earphones.

Speaker 3 (58:05):
Well, you know, maybe maybe somebody out there wants to
get them.

Speaker 1 (58:08):
So I mean, look, I'm I got wired earphones, but
I'm broke, all right, You're not can't get some some
five hundred dollars like wireless over the ear noise canceling
things or is he just keeping it frugal, which I
can respect as well. So yeah, I'm looking at this picture.
He's got wired headphones. Who have you ever seen anybody
hang earphones over their ear like that?

Speaker 4 (58:30):
It's because he had them in and were talking to him,
so he pulled them out.

Speaker 1 (58:34):
But they're around the ear.

Speaker 3 (58:37):
I think he I think he just has some hanging.

Speaker 1 (58:39):
You take them off and then hang them over your ear.

Speaker 3 (58:41):
But you're right.

Speaker 4 (58:42):
If he gets the the full on headphone, like the
ones that cover your ear, yeah, put those on.

Speaker 3 (58:48):
If somebody tries to talk to you, just smile and nod. Yes,
most people do. I can't talk.

Speaker 1 (58:52):
So I'm saying I am not calling I'm not calling
this not legit. I am saying I am skeptical that
jord On with his uh, his his Apple default wired headphones,
sitting next to this guy. It takes the headphones out
and says.

Speaker 3 (59:12):
Yeah, I about the look.

Speaker 1 (59:15):
I'm gonna be out for six weeks. Crazy, right, I see.

Speaker 4 (59:19):
I don't think it went down my way. I think
I think the guy's just conversating with him. And here's
the other thing. Here's the thing context clues. Yeah, our
friend Matthew O'Quinn on.

Speaker 1 (59:30):
Twelve quaenn baby.

Speaker 4 (59:32):
The screenshot he has of his dad, of his family.
It is titled La Familia. Okay, so again that's the
group text with his dad and his family. There may
be some bilingualness there there.

Speaker 3 (59:45):
If his dad. His dad may speak Spanish.

Speaker 1 (59:47):
And a quinn is a French name. Correct Quinn.

Speaker 3 (59:54):
It could be southern. Yeah, it could be from the south.

Speaker 1 (59:56):
And it sounds French to me. All right, so there
we go. I'm not sure what to make of all this.
But this guy does already follow me, he had before
I know his name. He is, I believe, a listener
to the show. And now I've had like three other
people send this to me after the guy who made

(01:00:17):
this tweet send it to me. And I'm not gonna
run with it. I'm not gonna say it's a six
week prognosis.

Speaker 3 (01:00:23):
Or and a clarification.

Speaker 4 (01:00:24):
It's a brace on his hand, not a cast like
the original tweet said. So again, we'll wait for the
official thing from the team. But but here's the thing,
like when the team's so vague so often with injuries,
it's almost like we gotta.

Speaker 3 (01:00:37):
Go to tweet some guys on airplanes.

Speaker 1 (01:00:39):
They've done a good job of being more straightforward with updates,
so hopefully they can continue to do that.

Speaker 4 (01:00:44):
Oh yeah, I love the updates they've given in the
in the game notes, like here's the latest on this
guy and this guy and this guy. Because it's good
to know we're not down with the Florida. There's no
reporters now at the Florida Complex League. We don't know
what Arragetty's doing and Chas McCormick and all those guys
are doing down there.

Speaker 1 (01:00:59):
Yeah, so there you go, Internet rumor, believe it or not.
I guess we'll have to figure it out. Hopefully we
hear something very soon.

Speaker 3 (01:01:06):
Think the big pictures, we're not expecting news stuff about
them to go. Yeah, you're on. It was just a
little bit of setback. He's gonna be good. He'll be
back next week. I think we understand he's going to
be out for some time.

Speaker 1 (01:01:16):
I imagine there is some kind of surgery, but most
of the hand surgeries I've done research on the hammetbone
and stuff like that. I mean, it could be a few, uh,
anywhere from a couple of months to three months. And
right now on July third, three months from now, would
be basically around the start of the playoffs. The Astros
were lucky enough to clinch it to top two seed

(01:01:38):
without jord On for that long, then they would have
that week off they would have to play. I mean,
I'll go ahead and look at the exact calendar, I
guess for October, but yeah, that would October third would
be a Friday, so that weekend probably I think, or
would it be the next week weekend when alds Is
would be starting.

Speaker 3 (01:01:58):
I think it's that weekend, all right, So we'll figure
that out. If this seems one in the World Series,
they're doing it with pitching, so.

Speaker 1 (01:02:05):
Uh yeah, but you're I'll say this, they're not doing
it without your what's up?

Speaker 3 (01:02:09):
They could?

Speaker 1 (01:02:10):
I don't think so. But camp Smith m VP, Okay, yeah,
you know, if cam Smith develops into all world guide,
then then maybe we can attack. They don't have enough hitting.
I don't think to win the World Series. To get
to the playoffs, yes, to win the World Series, I
don't think so, but that will come to that bridge.

Speaker 3 (01:02:29):
Do you have the of the month on this team?

Speaker 1 (01:02:31):
Yes you do.

Speaker 3 (01:02:32):
Do you have the al reliever of the month on
this team? Yeah?

Speaker 1 (01:02:35):
You got good pitching, but everybody else has got Yeah.
When you're going up against some of the the now.
Of course, in the playoffs, I don't know how great
The Detroit Tigers need to acquire a pitcher and we'll see,
because you know, the Trek School can't start every game
of a playoff series. But uh, anyways, we'll go. Uh,
we'll come to those bridges. When we cross them. We'll

(01:02:56):
see what happens through word on Alvarez. Hopefully we get
some news very soon.

Speaker 3 (01:03:00):
All right.

Speaker 1 (01:03:00):
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety is
the phone number Thomas to see you on hold. We'll
get to you in the next uh segment. Anybody else
you want to get in seven to one three two
one two five seven ninety. That's the latest from the internet.
On your Don Alvarez. We've been talking to some stros though.
They going for a sweep today at two ten here
on Sports Talk seven ninety. We'll be with you until

(01:03:21):
one to forty. We'll go into Ashtros on Deck mode
at one o'clock. We got the news at noon. Coming
up here shortly on Sports Talk seven ninety and The
Matt Thomas Show with Ross. Welcome back to the Mat
Tom Show with Ross again. I'm gonna be honest with you, folks.
I'm in Friday mode.

Speaker 3 (01:03:40):
It feels like we all know we're off tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (01:03:43):
I forgot that we had Brian mctagger today at eleven o'clock.
I forgot that we're supposed to have I just don't
get it. At eleven thirty on Thursdays because it's like Friday.
We don't have any of those things. Anything goes Friday.
And I think I even said anything to go Friday
and to start the show, didn't I nobody corrected me.
What's wrong? I'm calling up both of y'all.

Speaker 3 (01:04:01):
I mean, is a Friday?

Speaker 1 (01:04:02):
Yeah, yeah, it is a Friday. We went with the
Friday Florida Stories. I've been Friday. You know what, whatever
whichever you dealer's choice, you want to do a non
Florida Stories or you want to do I just don't
get it. Well, like, I just don't get Okay, we'll
pull that up at twelve thirty instead of eleven thirty
here on the show. That's my bad. That's on me.
I gotta do better. I keep forgetting which day is at. Yes,

(01:04:23):
we are at pizza and pints at Carbuck Browing. If
you want to come by, say hello, the wood fired
grill is ready to go. We just ordered a pizza.
You want to come by, say hello, you can do so. Look,
it's like I said, it's just basically Friday. Just come
just come out of an ice cold, refreshing Crawford Bock
hang out with us. If you'd like all right, seven
one three two one two five seven ninety is the
phone number. We got the news at noon, coming up

(01:04:44):
at noon. Then at twelve thirty we'll do I just
don't get it and you at seven one three two
one two five seven ninety. Thomas has rung in, so
we want to get him. What's up Thomas?

Speaker 15 (01:04:55):
Hey, guys, Yeah, while you were talking about yourd on
and that plane flight, I happened to look at the
Four Letter Network website as transferred him to the sixty
day injured list, and it's sourced by Matt Kalahara of
the Houston Chronicle. So he's on the sixty day IL.

Speaker 4 (01:05:13):
Yeah, but that was that was preliminary because he was
he's already been out. We brought it up yesterday was
day fifty four, So that doesn't really that they just
did that to be able to get Zach short on
the uh yeah, on the roster.

Speaker 3 (01:05:25):
With Luis Giormy going down.

Speaker 1 (01:05:27):
Yeah, that's just procedural that that doesn't necessarily mean any
anything else after that because he's already been you can
make that retroactive and as Gordy said, it's already been
fifty four days. So that that is, Uh, yeah, that's
that's just fire. He's back for six days. Yeah, he
just moved to the city. Yeah, that's the filing of
paperwork there, Thomas. So it's it's not necessarily a death

(01:05:51):
now for a season, gotcha, that's all good.

Speaker 4 (01:05:56):
Yeah, I think we should WEX did a good job
of clarifying that yesterday, and I feel like we should
have told the rest of the guys to kind of
bring that up to the kind of for clarification, because yes,
the headline becomes jord And Alvarez moved to the sixty
day IL, and everybody immediately assumes, oh my god, he's
out the next sixty days.

Speaker 3 (01:06:14):
No, it's retroactive.

Speaker 4 (01:06:16):
I think today's day fifty five, so you know he's
not coming back in the next five days. Yeah, he
he could theoretically on the sixty day IL come back
next week, but he's obviously not with the setback to
the hint.

Speaker 1 (01:06:28):
Right, So we're now I'm gonna say we're all good
or anything like that, but it's basically the filing of
paperwork to get somebody back, to get somebody on the roster.

Speaker 3 (01:06:38):
So yeah, I think I didn't realize.

Speaker 4 (01:06:39):
So you can go on the what is it the
seven day IL with it's ten days.

Speaker 1 (01:06:46):
It's normally ten days. For pictures, it's fifteen and seven
day would only be the concussion im.

Speaker 4 (01:06:50):
But if you're on, if you're on one of those,
you're still taking up a roster spot. Yes, if you're
on the sixty you're not.

Speaker 1 (01:06:56):
Correct, you're not. Oh yeah, so they're taking him off
the forty man to get to make room right or
to the roster yet.

Speaker 4 (01:07:02):
Yeah, because that's short to come up, you had you
had to make a move to get him on the active.

Speaker 1 (01:07:07):
Roster, right, So there you go.

Speaker 3 (01:07:10):
What Army, what happened to him?

Speaker 1 (01:07:13):
He had a hamstring strain? Okay, I think I don't
know exactly what happened or what the he just yeah, well, yeah,
that one play that he made, that's probably how he
strained his hamstring. It doesn't look like he's been moving
super well since then, so I don't know if that's
something he's been dealing with. But yeah, he went on
the AIL with hamstring injury. I mean, it's it's just

(01:07:35):
the hits keep on coming at this point and the
lineup has been posted. Gordy, did you see it? Today's lineup,
not yes esuk Paratus leading off. Jake Myers is batting second.
We're all okay, nothing to worry about. He's going to
be in the lineup, folks, and he's batting second. Al

(01:07:55):
Twove is at d hyeah. Let's just go and run
through it real quick. Cam Smith is leading excuse me
cleaning up for you, Christian Walker up to the fifth spot. Caratini, Hummel, Witcomb,
du Bon and Walter. You got to do wickhamb in
the field today. He will be at second base for
the Houston Astros. You have du Bond ninth place here
and then of course Walter getting the start.

Speaker 3 (01:08:18):
So how Jake Myers is in there?

Speaker 1 (01:08:22):
Yeah, Jake Myers is in there and he's in center field.
Uh yaner Diez getting the day off today.

Speaker 3 (01:08:31):
That's fine.

Speaker 1 (01:08:31):
Let him clear his head. Although I think he yeah
he did. I think did he have two? Maybe I
can't remember. They had five?

Speaker 3 (01:08:39):
Everybody had a hit least time.

Speaker 1 (01:08:40):
Yeah, they had sixteen hits yesterday. So that's okay. Uh yeah,
day off, day game after a night game, day off
for the catcher. Youron Diaz. But the good news is
Jake Myers back in the lineup, so I will, at
least for a little while, get over my fears that
he was going to be out after he got hit
by that pitch yesterday. So doesn't seem like there's any

(01:09:01):
issues there. That is great news. Seven one three two
one two five seven ninety is the phone number if
you want to get in seven one three two one
two five at seven ninety, Hose and Katie, You're next
up on the Matt Thomas Show with Ross.

Speaker 3 (01:09:13):
Hey, Matt. One thing I'm born and.

Speaker 16 (01:09:17):
Raised in Houston, Texas, die hard and Astros fan.

Speaker 13 (01:09:22):
Uh.

Speaker 16 (01:09:22):
One thing I could say about this team, and I
guess everybody agree with me, is regardless of the injuries,
pitching or whatever, when we most need the player that's
probably not hitting at the moment comes through so we
can win games. So whether Otuba's in the slump, then

(01:09:45):
Christian comes through or somebody's in the slump, somebody in
the team's always gonna come through and make sure we
gonna make it.

Speaker 5 (01:09:54):
And we're gonna make it to the.

Speaker 16 (01:09:55):
World Series this year again. And all listen on your
thought on the radio.

Speaker 3 (01:10:02):
All right, Matt, what were your thoughts on me?

Speaker 1 (01:10:04):
Nothing but nylon. Look, I've been in the business for
thirty plus years, folks, and that's neither here nor there.
All right, thank you, Jose Matt is out today, but
I do appreciate you, uh getting in and getting involved
in the show. The Yeah, the Ashos have been clutched.
They've been clutch with two outs, They've been clutching one

(01:10:25):
run games. I keep pointing this out. You can get
mad at me if you want, but their record in
one run games is like eighteen and seven. Generally that
tends to even out a little bit as the season
goes along. But they do have a really good bullpen.
They've been clutch. You add it all up, especially with
the great starts from fromber And and Hunter Brown, and

(01:10:45):
they just keep they just keep on winning. So I mean,
until they stop, we're I'm not gonna necessarily say I
say that this is like this is fake or they're
not real or whatever. I mean, run differential is plus
forty nine. That's still best in the division, not one
of the best in baseball, but they're still getting it done,
and until proven otherwise, I think they should definitely be

(01:11:06):
at minimum, of course, American League West champs, hopefully a
two seed in the American League.

Speaker 4 (01:11:12):
Gosh, I'm just looking at the pitcher they're going up
against today. Kyle Freeland. Kyle Freeland is one and nine
with an e array of five point fifty six. He
got his first win of the season back a month
ago on June fourth against the Miami Marlins. Everyone else
he has lost suit, okay, and his last time out
lasted four innings up in Milwaukee, where you give up

(01:11:34):
six earned runs off eight hits. So Astro sugar after
this guy. The Yankees got him for nine runs back
in May. The Dodgers got him for nine runs off
eleven hits back in May.

Speaker 1 (01:11:48):
See, Gordon, You're not like me. You say all that stuff,
and I'm like, oh, this guy's about to throw six
shut out against the Astros. This is not good. He
is a left is not good. Yeah, okay, they do.
They do very well against lefties.

Speaker 4 (01:12:00):
Smiers L Two, Bay Camp, Smith, Walker, Carrotini, Humble, Whitcomb,
and Dubon.

Speaker 1 (01:12:06):
Yes, Carrotini getting some right handed abs in this game.
That's pretty that's a rarity for him. Like, okay, all right,
are you telling me they're gonna be all right? I'll
believe you.

Speaker 3 (01:12:18):
Cayl frielin the rare. He's a Denver, Colorado native, pitch
for the hometown team.

Speaker 1 (01:12:23):
Man not do Is anybody happy when they're a pitcher
and you get selected or like signed by the Denver'd
be the Colorado Rockies. Okay, you gotta be pissed.

Speaker 5 (01:12:33):
It's just not good friends.

Speaker 3 (01:12:36):
Yeah, both.

Speaker 1 (01:12:38):
I remember they signed like Mike Hampton to a to
a big deal back in the day, and then like
his eras were out of control. I mean they got
the de fences. It's like three hundred and fifty to
left and three hundred and forty a right or something
like that out there. I mean they're doing everything they can,
but the ball just continues to fly out of there.
All right, Time for a break here on the Matt
Thomas Show with Ross. Without Matt Thomas, folks, he is

(01:13:00):
not here. Those of you on hold will get you
in the next segment. We've got the news at noon
coming up at noon twelve thirty, we'll have I just
don't get it. One o'clock. We'll start astros on deck
and we have you at seven one three two one
two five seven ninety seven one three two one two
five seven ninety All right, we've got an internet sleuth

(01:13:22):
rs jr DK, who I appreciate. I don't know if
he found this or someone else did, but I'm gonna
give him credit until told otherwise. There is a post
from April thirteenth by the Houston Astros on Twitter, Gordy.
It's a picture it's sponsored by SHM United Airlines where
the guys are all getting ready to get on the

(01:13:43):
plane and in one of the pictures is yourd On
Alvarez with luggage and with wireless over the ear headphones. Okay,
a couple things. He could have lost them, for sure.
But also if he's got these default wired headphones, you'd

(01:14:07):
have to have one of the older iPhones as well.
You'd have to have because the new ones have USBC right,
which I think it's the fifteen that started with. So
if he's got a fifteen or sixteen, maybe you'rd on.
Maybe Yourdon's over old school and he's like, you know what,
I don't need all these frills. I got my old
iPhone se two and it has an iPhone jack and
he's got plugged in or maybe he's got a USBC adapter.

(01:14:30):
I don't know. Just another angle on this to think about.
Because the picture doesn't look photoshopped to me.

Speaker 4 (01:14:38):
No, but I think that's a real fun I think
that's a real picture of Jordan Alpharez.

Speaker 1 (01:14:43):
All wired headphones, his arms, I don't know his arms,
don't even look that muscular though.

Speaker 3 (01:14:49):
That's your dog. Don't try to.

Speaker 1 (01:14:52):
No, that's his face. But look at it. You can
put his face on somebody else's body photoshop.

Speaker 3 (01:14:56):
That's an actual photo.

Speaker 1 (01:14:58):
Are you sure?

Speaker 3 (01:14:59):
Because then look at below the guy. Look in the comments.

Speaker 4 (01:15:01):
The guy screenshoted the the actual photo that too.

Speaker 1 (01:15:06):
If you're going, if you're gonna go do this, yeah,
I mean you can photoshop, but you've got to copy
and paste it into it. I'm just saying, that is a.

Speaker 4 (01:15:14):
Photo of Matthew o'kwenn's dad with Jordan Alvers on a plane. Now,
was it from yesterday or was it from four years ago?
I don't know, but that looks like it was from yesterday.
It looks legit.

Speaker 1 (01:15:26):
All right, Well, we'll see if he popped. What does
that even mean? My ligament popped?

Speaker 3 (01:15:30):
Well that that was so he's he's taught.

Speaker 1 (01:15:33):
He's sitting next to him, and Jordan is giving out
in for his own medical information to a stranger on
a plane.

Speaker 3 (01:15:41):
I mean, if he's.

Speaker 4 (01:15:42):
Sly conversating, and again, if the guy speaks Spanish, if
they're by, if he's bilingual and he's hold on, you're done.

Speaker 2 (01:15:49):
Well.

Speaker 1 (01:15:49):
Yes, six weeks, says miss us. Oh wait, it was
that month.

Speaker 3 (01:15:55):
Ligament get lost in translation? What's Spanish for ligament?

Speaker 1 (01:15:59):
Uh sa same hona? Excuse me? Okay, yeah, okay, I
guess like he's given him the prognosis and everything. I'm skeptical.

Speaker 3 (01:16:08):
I'll wait for Brian mctiger and Chandler Rome, Yes, as
will I data will the official word?

Speaker 1 (01:16:13):
All right, A couple on. Hold, let's get to you,
Jerry and pairline has been holding longest. What's up Jerry? Hey, guys,
just a couple of things.

Speaker 15 (01:16:22):
I am not complaining.

Speaker 17 (01:16:25):
I started the season telling everybody that would listen, which
is probably not that many, that we had a mediocre
offense last year and we got got worse on paper anyway,
So I'm happy with.

Speaker 1 (01:16:36):
What I'm seeing.

Speaker 17 (01:16:36):
I'm just as amazed as anybody else is how they're
doing it.

Speaker 1 (01:16:40):
My main concern two things.

Speaker 6 (01:16:41):
Number one, the.

Speaker 1 (01:16:44):
I love to Bennett Susan. When I saw the little
snippet before.

Speaker 17 (01:16:47):
We got hurt, last year, so I was anxious to
get him up here. And I love the guys that
they've gotten the pen. They're all actually legitimated arms. But
I'm just I'm just thinking.

Speaker 1 (01:16:57):
They need to get healthier.

Speaker 17 (01:17:00):
Obviously everybody knows that overall the Pigeon staff, but also
because you know some of these guys that are that
have stepped up, Gusto, more Gordon, et cetera.

Speaker 1 (01:17:13):
I don't know.

Speaker 17 (01:17:15):
You know this, there's gonna be a lull and I'm
just worried about another injury. How many can we take?
So it'd be nice to have another arm to take
some of the load off those those three guys I'm
thinking of, especially in the middle of the bullpen, that
are so good King and Susan and Or and even Okert.

Speaker 11 (01:17:33):
So that's one thing.

Speaker 17 (01:17:35):
The other thing is their offense shouldn't be good.

Speaker 5 (01:17:38):
But it is.

Speaker 17 (01:17:39):
I mean, it's it's not it's not great, and it
started out not great, but it's it's better than I expected.
I do think Jordan will eventually come back, but I'm
just wondering if you guys have any idea or have
you looked just there if they're looking.

Speaker 1 (01:17:55):
For a left handed bat.

Speaker 17 (01:17:56):
But usually a trade deadline deal is better for the
team trading, and the guys that are they're giving up
are on losing teams. So I'm just wondering what they
could possibly get as a left handed bat without giving
up the farm.

Speaker 1 (01:18:12):
All right, Jerry, thanks a lot. I appreciate it. Yeah,
they're fifth and average, Gordy, but I mean, come on, man,
that's that's old school. They're they're thirteenth in ops and
eighteenth and run scored. The offense is not very good.

Speaker 3 (01:18:22):
What are they hitting wise with two outs?

Speaker 1 (01:18:26):
Yeah, exactly, it's me. They okay, yes, they they have
been good. But but especially with Pinion down now as well,
this offense is gonna get worse. They need help. They
I think they needed. It needs to be much much better. Thankfully,
Christian Walker is having a good series so far. He's
got five hits, but it's also in altitude and against

(01:18:49):
bad pitching for the Colorado Rockies. But I don't think
they can just keep this up to where as I said,
they're eighteenth in runs scored per game in baseball. You
got to be better than that. The offense does have
to be better than that.

Speaker 4 (01:19:03):
How about this, I would look at dig it into
the offensive numbers. So their fifth in league batting averages
fifty seven. They're twelfth in total hits, they're fifteenth in
home runs, they're eighteenth in runs scored, but they're fifth
least in strikeouts. So they don't strike out a lot. Okay,
they don't hit a ton of home runs, but they

(01:19:24):
get timely hitting.

Speaker 3 (01:19:25):
That's that's the story of this offense. And of course
the third team help.

Speaker 1 (01:19:30):
Yeah, timely enough hitting that they're eighteenth and runs scored,
I mean, I mean they're behind the age. Well, the
Angels actually have a lot of home runs. They're behind
the Marlins. The I mean, I was gonna say Washington Centers,
the Nationals, I mean clutch gen Ross, clutch geen is
they're so clutch. They got eighteen they're eighteenth and runs
per game. That's not it. You'd be more clutch, you

(01:19:51):
would figure. But yeah, that's what I'm saying this.

Speaker 4 (01:19:53):
No, because that that doesn't I mean, hitting with two outs,
you can you could have no runs.

Speaker 1 (01:19:58):
Okay, the other end, it's a dangerous to play to
think that's just gonna happen the rest of the season.
As I said, they've been very good in one run
games that luck tends to turn around. Even though the
bullpen has been good, they need to think that they
need some offensive help. They just absolutely do.

Speaker 3 (01:20:12):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (01:20:12):
Yeah, But I mean that's the thing is, like, okay,
left handed power hitter on expiring deal.

Speaker 3 (01:20:18):
How many of those are out there? I don't know.

Speaker 1 (01:20:20):
I'd have to look around, but there there's a few
of them. There's there's gonna be some options. I don't
know exactly which doors they're gonna go down, but they're
gonna have some options there. And you can't just keep
banking on like, oh, Cooper Humble hit us a home
run and we won this game. And oh, Victor Kartini
won to hit a Grand Slam and we won this game.
You know, Tose Altuve definitely is gonna come up clutch

(01:20:41):
for you here and there, as he had the go
ahead single that won them the game yesterday. But I
think at some point, I mean, and Dana Brown knows this,
they have to improve this offense, especially depending on what
is actually going on with Jordon Alvarez and how long
he is going to be out. All right, Tray in
Sugarland has been holding patiently, so let's get him real quick.

Speaker 18 (01:21:03):
What's up, Tray, Yeah, just talking about the hitting and
thinking about it. You know, I've been looking at this
throughout the season. Is this an organizational wide issue? It
appears to be when you look at the stats and
the minor leagues at Triple A and Double A, for example,
there's nobody down there. There's maybe two or three guys

(01:21:24):
that had strikeout rates, for example, less than thirty percent,
and you know, contact rate and all of those metrics
that Dana Brown's been talking about recently, you know, like
in relation to Bryce Matthews. You know, a question I
guess becomes, is this an organizational wide philosophical problem that
they're having with hitting? There's nobody that's down there that

(01:21:46):
that looks like they're ready to come up yet and
contribute at the plate. Some of the guy's opinion on that,
it seems to be organization wide.

Speaker 1 (01:21:59):
Yeah, I got you, Trey, Yeah, I mean it has
been kind of a shortage of who is. Of course,
Cam Smith was one of their top projects. They just
traded him this offseason from Kyle with Kyle Tucker, a
guy who's come up through the ranks recently and been
an impact position player and really really good at the plate.

(01:22:20):
I mean we can go all the way back to
like a Kyle Tucker or Alex Bregman. I mean, Jeremy
Pania came up through the system, I guess, and he's
been been pretty good, and he was a guy that
was I think that the year before he came up,
he was in a top one hundred prospect list. I
think the Baseball Prospectives had him like seventeenth or something
like that. I honestly can't speak to that glory. I

(01:22:41):
don't know. It's been a lot of really good pitching
and guys who come up and then are really effective.
But it's also just harder to in general to have
impact high level hitters go through the system, especially with
the way that this this Astros farm sistem has been
its not is one of the best in baseball.

Speaker 3 (01:23:01):
Yeah, they've been finded in, you know, diamonds in the
rough pitching wise.

Speaker 1 (01:23:04):
But Bryce Matthews is somebody to keep an eye on.
Zach Dessenzo has been in the farm system, but you
know he's hurt now and he was he was actually
you know, showing some flashes for you as well. Jacob
Melton has not thought of as a plus plus bat
even though he's your number two prospect, and he was

(01:23:26):
showing here's something here and there, but then he got
hurt as well.

Speaker 4 (01:23:30):
So here's a here's the name. I was just reading
CBS Sports as some trade deadline potential guys who would
be available. Josh Naylor, first baseman for the Arizona Diamondbacks,
said not much as going the Diamondbacks way this season,
but replacing Christian Walker with Naylor counts as a win.
He provides plenty of contact and power against right handed pitching,

(01:23:54):
and he shows them an opportunity time to enjoy.

Speaker 3 (01:23:56):
What Mike go down is a career best season.

Speaker 4 (01:23:58):
Josh Naylor batting three h three with ten homers for
the Diamondbacks, and he's a left handed bat. He's on
a one year, ten million dollars deal. Was arbitration playing first,
he said, yeah, he's a pending free agent. And the
funny thing is he's the guy who replaced Christian Walker.
I think it'd be pretty funny to make a move
for him. Him come platoon, he can DH, he can

(01:24:19):
play first space.

Speaker 1 (01:24:20):
I think they're gonna want to still continue to give
I wonder how long the leash is for Christian Walker.
It might be all the way up into the playoffs.

Speaker 4 (01:24:27):
I'm just saying this is a this is a left
handed bat that's gonna be available.

Speaker 1 (01:24:31):
Yeah, well, hey, John Singleton's available to all right, I'm
gonna take a break on that note. Rosby yaw. Chris
Gordy with you those you on hold, we would get
to you momentarily. Phone lines open at seven to one
to three two one two five seven ninety seven one
three two one two five seven ninety We have I
just don't get it. Come out of a twelve thirty.
We have Astros on deck. Coming up. At one o'clock.

(01:24:51):
We are at Pizza and Pints at Carbock Brewing. Come
by and say hello.

Speaker 2 (01:24:57):
Our number three of the Matt Thomas Show with Ross
without Matt Thomas, Chris Gordy with me at Pizza and
pintes and Carbok Brewing.

Speaker 1 (01:25:08):
As it is a Thursday edition of the program here
on Sports Talk seven ninety all right, Yeah, we're using
the Friday open on a Thursday. That's how we're rolling
on The Matt Thomas Show with Ross. Even though it
is confusing me and I'm thinking that today's Friday. That's
all right, we'll get through it. Somehow, some way we

(01:25:30):
have I just don't get it. Coming up at twelve thirty,
we'll go into Astros on deck mode. Coming up at
one o'clock. Right now, it is time for the news
at noon here on Sports Talk seven Nighty. All right, Gordy,
I'm gonna bring you the news at noon and you're
gonna react now. Of course, we know that the Houston
Astros one yesterday in Colorado. They are two games up

(01:25:55):
in this series. They have clinched in victory. They're going
first week coming up at two ten here on a
Sports Talk seven ninety. But the news, or is it
of the day, has been from our guy Matthew All
call a colonel or however you're saying it. Apparently jord

(01:26:15):
On Alvarez spotted at LaGuardia is what people are saying.
Why is he in New York? Is that where the
hand specialist is? Because some sent me a picture of
him and LaGuardia, and then we got this other tweet saying, quote,
here's jord On Alvarez last night cast on he did
clarify that it's a brace, not a cast, directly from

(01:26:38):
his the man himself. My dad asked and said quote,
my ligament popped during my rehab stint and I won't
be swinging for six weeks. And then it's a picture
of jord On Alvarez with some old wired headphones, although
people have pointed out that he could be using wired
headphones to plug into the television of the plane, because

(01:27:03):
we also have photos of him with some nice wireless headphones.
So is jord On Alvarez just a cheap bastard or
was he listening to video? Or is his picture old
or not real at all? That's what you have to do.
We have to figure out. It's more of an investigative
edition of the News at noon.

Speaker 3 (01:27:23):
I believe this. I believe the photo is real.

Speaker 4 (01:27:26):
I believe that is really your Don Alvarez with Matthew
o'quann's father on social media. The only thing we just
don't know is the legitimacy of jord I'm telling this
guy's father on a plane that, oh yeah, my ligament
popped during my rehab and I won't be swinging for
six weeks.

Speaker 1 (01:27:52):
So not swinging for six weeks, that's yeah, that means.

Speaker 4 (01:27:58):
Five six, Okay, that's mid As just starting to pick up.

Speaker 3 (01:28:01):
A bat again.

Speaker 1 (01:28:02):
Yeah, then probably two three weeks of rehab, so that
would be the start of September. That actually would be
a good thing. I mean, we've got to figure out
what's going on with this whole Jordon debacle and the setbacks.
Hopefully we get something soon with this, because I don't
want to be speculating and talking about these ridiculous tweets

(01:28:22):
that we're seeing from people taking pictures of yord On
and apparently he's giving this guy's dad the entire prognosis
of what's going on with his hand and a timeline.

Speaker 3 (01:28:30):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (01:28:31):
Again, we'll wait for the efficient word from any of
the Astro sources, but that is that's out there.

Speaker 3 (01:28:38):
That's all we're doing, passing that along all right.

Speaker 1 (01:28:40):
Well, elsewhere on the news at noon, some unfortunate news.
Gordy Liverpool forward Diogo howta?

Speaker 3 (01:28:49):
This is your number two news.

Speaker 1 (01:28:50):
Ted Bit dead in a car crash in Spain. Your thoughts, Yeah,
not familiar, but it's horrible. I twenty eight years old.
He and his brother died in a car crash in Spain.
I mean, one hundred and eighty two appearances at Liverpool
in five years. This is big international news. That's what
I'm trying to bring you. It is the news at noon.

(01:29:11):
That's what I'm just trying to tell you, unless you
want to talk about Luis or Tees under investigation over
an alleged gambling scheme.

Speaker 3 (01:29:19):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (01:29:20):
No, that's intriguing from a standpoint of current athletes betting
on sports. We knew this was going to be a
thing that was going to happen with the legalization of
sports betting across so many places. Not here in Texas, though,
the sports butting is bad. Okay, Dan Patrick is going
to see too that.

Speaker 1 (01:29:37):
Yeah, I'm dumb because I didn't think this would happen,
at least not with basketball players. Now, I guess I
get it more with baseball players, especially guys like on
league minimum deals. It's not like they're making millions and
millions of dollars. But I just didn't think people would
be stupid enough to continue to do this to risk
banishment for a life from the sport.

Speaker 4 (01:29:58):
Yeah he is, Uh, he's under investigation. According to Jeff Passing,
he will he's placed on paid leave by MLB. They
will have a league investigation into his gambling activities.

Speaker 1 (01:30:13):
Horrible. All right, Well, there.

Speaker 3 (01:30:14):
Was another baseball related tobit go ahead, Chandler Rome putting
it out there, sho, Hey, Otani will start opposite from
ber Valdez on Saturday on the mound.

Speaker 1 (01:30:26):
How much will he pitch?

Speaker 3 (01:30:27):
Well, here's the thing.

Speaker 4 (01:30:28):
He's made three starts back on the mound the past
few weeks. He pitched one inning against the Padres, one
inning against the Nationals, and two innings against the Royals.
He's given up one total run in those three outings.
So he's got four innings pitch total in the area
of two twenty five.

Speaker 3 (01:30:47):
He's been good.

Speaker 4 (01:30:48):
So okay, So last time out he won two innings. Yes,
so I would say maybe they try to stretch him
to three this time.

Speaker 3 (01:30:56):
Okay, it's like a spring trade. Here's the funny thing
about it.

Speaker 1 (01:31:00):
He's on the case.

Speaker 3 (01:31:00):
Well, here's the funny thing about it.

Speaker 4 (01:31:02):
So he's back into pitching form, but he can't make
rehab starts in the miners because his that's too important
to the big league club. So it's almost like they
have to just gut through it. Hey, show, Hey, we
need your bat in the lineup every day, so we're
just gonna keep starting your one or two innings at
a time until you build back up. Okay, but that's
that's that's ballsy to do. Opposite from Brough. I mean,

(01:31:24):
you're basically saying that's gonna be a bullpen game.

Speaker 1 (01:31:25):
You gotta get him some work at some point, you
gotta get him some work. All right, We're gonna take
quick break here on that. Oh, one more quick news item.
Your reliever of the month for June in the American League,
Josh Hater. Your pitcher of the month, Hunter Brown. Pretty good,
not bad at all. All right, we're gonna take quick
break here. We have an update on yourd On Alvarez

(01:31:47):
when we come back. This is hot off the press,
so we're gonna hit quick break. Steve and I see
you will get to you soon as well. But a
yord On update is next. I literally just saw it.
Gonna take quick break, be right back with that twelve
the PM here on Talk seven, and we have a
lengthy update. We're gonna have to parse through a lot here,

(01:32:08):
Gordy On, yord On Alvarez and his hand. We are
out at the pizza and pints at Carboch Brewing. Appreciate
a couple of you guys come out, Carlos, Steve, others,
have come by. Appreciate all of them. We've got some
good prizes for if you want to come by, say hello,
we're here at Pizza and Pints.

Speaker 3 (01:32:25):
Steven.

Speaker 1 (01:32:25):
We will get to you in just a moment, but
we have to get to this. Yord On update put
out by the Astros. All right, let's get this started.
Gordy yord On. Alvarez and the Astros receive some encouraging
news from a hand specialist that examined Alvarez's sore right
hand on Wednesday. As part of the examination, additional imaging

(01:32:46):
was done on his right hand, which revealed that the
main cause of his current pain is due to inflammation.
I think that's good. Doesn't sound like a pop ligament.
Doesn't sound like a fracture or anything like that. All right,
I continue on. The specialists also indicated that at this
point in the recovery process, the small fracture that had

(01:33:08):
been sustained is now a non factor in the discomfort
that Alvarez is currently experiencing. So they're saying, no fracture
or the fracture is not what's causing him pain. So
the fractures healed, that's what it sounds like. They're trying
to say, also.

Speaker 3 (01:33:26):
We were a few weeks ago it was forty percent
and then it was sixty percent.

Speaker 1 (01:33:30):
Wouldn't they have said the fracture is fully healed in
this statement as well. They didn't say that. They tried
to apply it without saying it, which is giving me pause.

Speaker 3 (01:33:38):
The small fracture that had been sustained is now a non.

Speaker 1 (01:33:42):
Factor, a non factor in the discomfort. That doesn't mean
a non factor in his recovery process, right.

Speaker 3 (01:33:47):
Well, it might be like ninety five.

Speaker 1 (01:33:50):
I'm just saying they're being a little dodgy.

Speaker 3 (01:33:53):
We've seen this before when saying it's a non factor.

Speaker 1 (01:33:56):
It's a non factor in the discomfort. They're saying. It's
not the fracture that's hurt, which is healing properly. He's
hurt somewhere else, which I don't know, all right. As
a result of the examination, Alvarez received two injections in
his hand on Wednesday and will refrain from any activity
involving in his hand in the upcoming days. This was

(01:34:16):
not the first time that Alvarez had received injections in
his hands while on the injured list. All Right specialists
also reviewed the multiple sets of imaging that had been
done previously on Alvarez's hand and concurred with the findings
of the astros, medical staffs and other hand specialists. So
that's a little few to some people.

Speaker 3 (01:34:38):
Why they have on these great doctors.

Speaker 1 (01:34:39):
They put that in on purpose of course, all right.
Specialists also determined that the imaging done on Wednesday were
feeled that Alvarez's hand made noticeable progress when compared to
imaging done over the past several weeks. Prior to Wednesday's MRI,
the most recent imaging on Alvarez's hand had indicated that
the inflammation had been reduced. Alvarez began to ramp up
his baseball activity low this week and was able to

(01:35:00):
take batting practice on the field on Saturday with positive results. However,
on Tuesday morning, he reported to the medical staff the
pain in his hand return, which resulted in Wednesday's visit
to the additional hand specialists. So the key part of
this is they're calling it encouraging. They're saying that it's
inflammation and not do it to a fracture, and certainly
not due to some guy on the Internet posting a

(01:35:22):
picture of Jordon and saying he's going to be out
six weeks with a popped ligament.

Speaker 4 (01:35:27):
Well Arman on Twitter said, you know, the Astros gave
Jordan a good talking to about talking to random dudes
on airplanes about your injuries.

Speaker 3 (01:35:36):
Whether that's true or.

Speaker 1 (01:35:38):
Though, I'm calling bs on the whole thing. Still, I'm
sorry Matthew that Jordan would go and say, oh, my
ligaman popped him out in six weeks. Don't believe it.
I didn't believe it. I was more skeptical. And now
after this, they're not mentioning anything about a ligament, doesn't
mention a timetable. Now it could turn out to be true.
The Astros have been dodgy with injury stuff before. I understand,

(01:36:00):
but this sounds, I'm gonna say, sounds pretty good. They
use the word encouraging. They're gonna go with that, and
they're saying it's not the fracture of that's turning them.
We're gonna be ay, what do you think?

Speaker 3 (01:36:14):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (01:36:14):
I mean again, this is the official statement from the
team and they are acting very positive about this. If
it were true that there was a ligament pop or
anything like that, I feel like they would have alluded
to that in this.

Speaker 1 (01:36:28):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:36:28):
So I mean it.

Speaker 4 (01:36:29):
Starts with the Astros and Jordan Alvarez received some encouraging
news from a hand specialist.

Speaker 1 (01:36:35):
Yeah, on Wednesday, Okay, I'm gonna I'm gonna take them
at their word on that and we're just gonna go
from here.

Speaker 3 (01:36:45):
What do you read it through that? Okay, so they think.

Speaker 4 (01:36:49):
As part of the examination on Wednesday, additional imaging was
done in his right hand, which revealed the main cause of
his current pain is due to inflammation, and they indicated
the small fracture have been sustained is now a non
factor and a discomfort.

Speaker 3 (01:37:03):
So the fracture's healed, so he's just keep having what's
causing inflammation then.

Speaker 1 (01:37:09):
Soreness, bruising. I don't know. I mean, this is just
we also say that they've said before that inflammation makes
it harder to get good, reliable imaging.

Speaker 3 (01:37:19):
Right. I just feel like this is we're in circles here.

Speaker 1 (01:37:23):
He doesn't say no fracture.

Speaker 3 (01:37:24):
I don't know, because remember even a few weeks back
when he was starting to swing and all this, they
were like, yeah, the problem is it's just like he's
he feels good and then he swings and then the
next day that it's the inflammation pops up and he
can't and he's got discomfort in there.

Speaker 4 (01:37:39):
It's like, well, this is just gonna keep lasting all season,
like it's gonna be a circular thing.

Speaker 1 (01:37:45):
Well, we'll see, We'll get the updates when we come
with him. I'm not gonna believe that that Jordan told
some stranger he popped the ligament in his hand.

Speaker 3 (01:37:52):
So and I feel like they would have put that
that news would have been in here if that were true.

Speaker 1 (01:37:59):
I agree, all right, well, but.

Speaker 4 (01:38:01):
They're basically saying that they determine. The imaging done on
Wednesday revealed his hand has made noticeable progress when compared
to the imaging from a few weeks ago. Okay, great,
Then what's the setback? Why is there a setback? If
this new imaging is like, oh no, he's actually doing great,
what's the setback?

Speaker 1 (01:38:19):
It's a setback? Is that he's hurt and that he's
he's feeling discoming, he's discomforted.

Speaker 3 (01:38:25):
Yeah, they said.

Speaker 4 (01:38:25):
On Tuesday, Alvarez reported the ASTROS the pain in his
hand had returned, which resulted in the next you know,
him seeing a HANDSBUSHO on Wednesday. But I just I
feel like I don't understand here, like, okay, so he's
having pain.

Speaker 3 (01:38:41):
Yes, that's the setback.

Speaker 15 (01:38:43):
Huh.

Speaker 4 (01:38:43):
They said they're gonna shut him down for they said
a couple of days, right.

Speaker 1 (01:38:47):
So he's getting in he's got inflammation, a couple of
days he's shut down.

Speaker 3 (01:38:51):
All right.

Speaker 1 (01:38:51):
Well, on that note, we're gonna take a break and
I'm gonna try to clear this headache that I'm getting.
We're trying to figure out what the hell is going
on with you order on Alvarez's hand. You want to
call in and react to any of that, you can
seven one three two one two five seven ninety seven
one three two one two five seven ninety Ros Viry
Real Chris Cordy with you have pizza and pines. We
get I just don't get it. Well, coming up in

(01:39:12):
the next segment, actually I got some things I just
don't get. And then we have Astros on deck coming
up at one o'clock Astros two ten, first pitch they
go for a sweep against the Colorado Rockies. Here on
Sports Talk seven ninety you're home for your Stros. All right,
it is that time of the week. Something you don't
understand what is going on? I just don't get it.

(01:39:33):
Seven one three two one two five seven ninety seven
one three two one two five seven ninety We'll get
to that in just a moment, but we are getting
a few tweets from Matthew. Say his name again, O
quinn O quinn, Matthew O quam man. So matt Thomas
replied to him a few minutes ago, saying, this is

(01:39:56):
exactly the opposite of what the astros just reported. He
shall see. Matthew says, I am simply telling you what
Jordn told my father. Y'all can flame me all you want.
I thought I was doing a good thing. I wasn't
making anything up, and I was fully transparent. I hope
it's not six weeks. I wish he was back hitting
and wasn't hurt to begin with. There you go, Matthew

(01:40:23):
Oquah is standing by his father's reporting, but the astros
are saying something completely different.

Speaker 3 (01:40:31):
Yeah, I mean.

Speaker 1 (01:40:32):
Couldn't Dad just be playing a joke? Yeah he told
me six weeks for his ligament.

Speaker 4 (01:40:36):
Well again, let's break down what is what is this
report from the astro saying.

Speaker 1 (01:40:41):
It's not saying anything about a populigation in six weeks?

Speaker 3 (01:40:44):
Right?

Speaker 4 (01:40:45):
They start by calling it encouraging news, right, And all
they're saying is from this additional imaging that was done
on Wednesday revealed that the main cause of his pain
is inflammation.

Speaker 3 (01:40:57):
Okay, I thought that was the deal.

Speaker 4 (01:41:01):
They're saying, Oh, the small fracture is a non factoris discomfort. Okay,
but like you had told us weeks ago, remember Dana
Brown was like, Oh, that fracture that's almost healed. Man,
that thing's healing up so quick. It's really just the
discomfort that he's having. Like that was the explanation a
month ago.

Speaker 3 (01:41:17):
Okay. You know he's he picks up a bat and
he swings and he feels good, and then you know,
later on pain kind of comes in there and we
looked at it. It's due to inflammation.

Speaker 4 (01:41:26):
So this report today is going you know what, we
had this new hand specialist look at it. You know
what he found His pain has caused to do due
to inflammation.

Speaker 3 (01:41:35):
Yeah, we knew that, all righty, Like I don't get it, Like,
what's the deal here?

Speaker 1 (01:41:43):
I have to ask myself a question and everyone else
a question if there is an ligament issue or a
fracture or something like that, and they are not telling
us about it. Why?

Speaker 3 (01:42:02):
Yeah, I mean, what's the benefit Now?

Speaker 1 (01:42:06):
This kind of did happen last year with the fracture
with Kyle Tucker, where they weren't gonna say it was
a fracture until it was literally going to be reported,
and they're like, all right, fine, it's a fracture. But
so I would say, I would be asked the same
question there, and I still don't have an answer. Why
would they lie about a shin bruise versus a fracture
versus somebody with somebody missing ninety games? But I have

(01:42:28):
to ask again, Hopefully they have learned from this, you
know what, I'll throw this right into I just don't
get it. If the astros are lying, why what is
the harmon saying? What is the harmon saying guys get
hurt every year? They have Tommy John, they they have
shin bruises, that they are fractures, all this stuff. What
is the harmon saying Jordan Alvarez has a ligament issue,

(01:42:52):
We're looking into surgery and we're gonna go from there.
There's this long thousand word explanation it basically, just as
he's got a little bit of soreness, he got some injections.
He's gonna be okay in a couple of days. I
just it is difficult to make heads or tails of this.

Speaker 3 (01:43:07):
It just really is.

Speaker 4 (01:43:09):
Again, they called it encourage it, but I think the
encouraging part. All they're saying is this new hand specialist
found that pain he's having his hand. It's not even.

Speaker 3 (01:43:19):
Due to the fracture. The fracture's fine, good, bad things
healing up. It's just inflammation, to which my question is
inflammation from what if he's not swinging a bat, well,
I guess he was, So if you gras they're saying,
oh he picked up and he was swinging the bat again, And.

Speaker 1 (01:43:36):
If he was playing at the arcade and he accidentally
he hit the boxes, I.

Speaker 4 (01:43:40):
Don't think he was okay. I think that would have
been pretty irresponsible.

Speaker 3 (01:43:44):
For him to go.

Speaker 1 (01:43:45):
But well, he's also on planes telling people his six
week prognosis according to the Internet.

Speaker 4 (01:43:51):
But again, as the rest of the report they indicated
this point, the small fracture is a non factors result.
He received two injections in his hand, which I don't
know what injections for something that reduces inflammation, I would
assume huh.

Speaker 3 (01:44:05):
They don't say what they're injecting him with.

Speaker 4 (01:44:08):
He will refraining from any activity involving his hand in
the upcoming days, days, not weeks, months, whatever. This was
not the first time he received injections in his hand,
so again he's been having inflammation. He got injections with inflammation.
It hasn't helped, apparently, but he got more injections.

Speaker 3 (01:44:28):
I'm just trying to readdo this.

Speaker 1 (01:44:29):
Logically all right? I don't get it. I don't get
it either. Also, some more injury news real quick here.
Gordy red Pandas suffered a broken wrist after falling off
of her unicycle.

Speaker 3 (01:44:40):
How long is she out?

Speaker 1 (01:44:41):
She spent eleven hours in the hospital. She will need
further consultation with an orthopedic surgeon, but intends to be
ready for next season. There's your pand out.

Speaker 3 (01:44:50):
Could we take Red Panda's other hand and give that
to Jordon?

Speaker 1 (01:44:53):
I don't think you want a fifty one year old
woman's hand for Jordan to swing with.

Speaker 3 (01:44:58):
Okay, I'm just trying to think outside the ball. Oh yeah,
I appreciate you. We did have an encouraging medical update.
Go ahead, uh.

Speaker 4 (01:45:04):
Chas McCormick will join Triple A Sugarland today and begin
playing with them tomorrow.

Speaker 1 (01:45:08):
Okay, well I get that. What don't you get I'm
gonna go with this Luis Ortiz gambling thing. Have people
not seen that that people are getting caught with these
gambling things and you're being banished for life? I understand,
and I thought this wasn't really gonna happen much with
gambling because they these sportsbooks have data. If you're telling
one person to hey, bet on my prop bed or

(01:45:31):
bet on this prop bed, they're gonna tell somebody, They're
gonna tell ten people, then there's gonna be a flurry
of activity, and that sets off red flags at all
these sportsbooks. So the fact that this just keeps happening
with Malik Beasley, with whoever else I can't even remember
at this point, these cheating scandals that have been popping up,
and they continue to happen. I mean, you think people

(01:45:52):
would learn their lesson after the firestorm from the first
couple of these. I just don't get it.

Speaker 4 (01:45:58):
I'm with you, I and especially I'm surprise college it
hasn't happened more broke college players trying to make some
extra money. I'm surprised surprise that hasn't happened a little
bit more. But yeah, I mean, I also think the
punishments are a little extra, Like who was the guy
in a It was the wide receiver for the Jaguars, right,
they got.

Speaker 1 (01:46:19):
Oh, he he was making parlays and then he.

Speaker 3 (01:46:23):
Uh, but Roger Goodell was like automatic band a full year,
like a full year.

Speaker 1 (01:46:29):
Yeah, uh for for betting on parlays. Yeah, he was
with the Falcons and then now he's with the Jaguars.
Why can't I remember his name?

Speaker 3 (01:46:37):
Right now?

Speaker 1 (01:46:37):
Starts with to see I can't remember Cam Ridley, Calvin.

Speaker 3 (01:46:42):
Ridley, Calverly, Alabama kid.

Speaker 1 (01:46:45):
Hmm, oh, you're trying to throw saving under the bus.
I see you working.

Speaker 5 (01:46:49):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:46:49):
I just don't get it. What don't you get, Gordy.

Speaker 4 (01:46:53):
I don't get why ESPN continues to pay Steven A.
Smith as much as they do and make him the
face of all their sports coverage. Look, it's one thing
to ask him NBA stuff. I think it's absolutely silly
when they have him try to talk Major League Baseball
or college football stuff because he always gets things wrong.

Speaker 3 (01:47:10):
But apparently Steven A. Smith on ESPN yesterday.

Speaker 4 (01:47:16):
Was asked about the Knicks hiring Mike Brown as head coach,
and Steven A on the phone was giving his thoughts
and talked about how excited he is to see a
lot of the great players for the Knicks back, including
Michael McBride.

Speaker 3 (01:47:30):
It's Miles McBride.

Speaker 4 (01:47:31):
He got one of the key players from the Knicks
names wrong on ESPN.

Speaker 1 (01:47:37):
That's less egregious than some other things he had. He did,
what is it what? There was a tight end and
it was Derek Johnson and the Chiefs, and then it
was a tight end for somebody else, and he was
talking about their matchup and neither of them were still
on the team. Like, so he's had some bad slip ups.

Speaker 3 (01:47:53):
I just it continues to happen, though.

Speaker 1 (01:47:55):
Yeah, I'm gonna say getting the name wrong, at least
he had to start and letting you said, Miles, Michael.

Speaker 3 (01:48:00):
Yeah, Michael McBride.

Speaker 1 (01:48:01):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (01:48:02):
Everybody out there is like, who the hell's Michael McBride.

Speaker 1 (01:48:05):
That one's not that bad. But I'm with you. I understand.
Like he makes all that money and then that's what
he ESPN does. He's like, we're paying this guy twenty
million dollars. All right, Well, we're gonna put you on this, this, this, this, this
and this that way you have to justify the salary.

Speaker 3 (01:48:20):
Let me slide in another. I just don't get it.

Speaker 4 (01:48:22):
Okay, it's another highly paid ESPN town. Oh how about
Paul Finebaum. Oh I saw on.

Speaker 1 (01:48:27):
Their morning show the other morning, says, oh my god, that.

Speaker 4 (01:48:30):
Arch Manning is gonna be is the most talented quarterback
to come along since Tim Tebow.

Speaker 3 (01:48:36):
Oh we're gonna say he's the best quarterback. Yeah? Best?

Speaker 1 (01:48:40):
Yeah, I think so.

Speaker 3 (01:48:41):
And it's like, dude, yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:48:43):
Let's just ignore Cam Newton, Joe Burrow and what's the
first one that came.

Speaker 3 (01:48:47):
To Johnny manzil. I mean, we have had Heisman Trophy
winning quarterback after Heisman Trophy winning quarterback come through, not
just college football, but the SEC's particularly You're gonna go
to t Bow two thousand and seven, two thousand.

Speaker 1 (01:49:02):
And six, Johnny Man did you say, Johnny mandan.

Speaker 3 (01:49:05):
Zell, Joe Burrow, Jayden.

Speaker 1 (01:49:07):
Daniels, Taker Mayfield.

Speaker 3 (01:49:09):
I mean, yeah, the list goes all Kyler Murray. Geez.

Speaker 1 (01:49:13):
Yeah, that was horrible. I saw that, And of course
I'm a Texas fan. I'm hoping that he's right about
Arch Manning. But that was that was? That was a
hard eye roll. I couldn't believe that he said that idly.

Speaker 3 (01:49:25):
And then he stood by it, and then like yesterday,
he was like offended that people were offended by his
dumb ass take. But again, guy makes millions.

Speaker 4 (01:49:34):
Please, if there's an ESPN executive out there, please I
will take millions.

Speaker 3 (01:49:38):
From you have dumb ass tacks. I will I will
make a career out of that. Sign.

Speaker 1 (01:49:42):
We'll get your agent right on that. All right, Jonathan,
what don't you just get?

Speaker 5 (01:49:45):
You know?

Speaker 19 (01:49:45):
This is a one of them has been waying to
ask because I don't understand all these headlines about the
Rockets and Sons with Kevin Durant are trying to do
a seven like the way you deal with seven teens.
I don't understand what the Rockets is gaining out of this,
and what's the point of that. I don't understand this.
I need someone to help me get I don't know
what's going on.

Speaker 1 (01:50:03):
I think you can kind of benefit in some ways,
like where you end up picking up a second round
pick or a trade exception, or you end up matching
the money more easily so you don't have to give
as much as far as your roster players. There's a
number of reasons I will say overall, I kind of
don't I don't understand it. I think it's a Curtis

(01:50:23):
but I get it. Yeah, I think you're.

Speaker 4 (01:50:24):
Getting calls from some of the other gms going, hey, Rafell,
do you mind we're trying to get under the apron.
We're gonna do this transactional deal with the Bucks. Do
you mind if we get in this?

Speaker 1 (01:50:34):
Yeah, we don't we find Do you mind we make
this a seventeen deal?

Speaker 5 (01:50:37):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (01:50:38):
Do us a solid It's it's kind of like that. Yeah,
you scratch our back, well, scratch yours, all that kind
of stuff, Jonathan. So there you go. Okay, we're gonna
take quick break those you and hold. We'll get to you,
I promise. Coming up next, it'll be the final segment
of the Matt Thomas Show with Ross Formatt. We will
go on Astros on Deck Mode coming up at one
o'clock until one forty when we will go into Astros Networking.

(01:51:00):
Then two ten first pitch Astros and Rockies game number
three of the three game set coming right at you
here on Sports Talk seven ninety. You're home for the Shrows,
all right, only a little time before we get to
astros on deck mode. Couple on Holtz. Let's go ahead
and get after it, starting with those of you who

(01:51:20):
just don't get it. Robert and Katie, go ahead. The
floor's yours.

Speaker 11 (01:51:24):
Hey, Man, What I just don't get is these Colorado
fans booing out too by.

Speaker 3 (01:51:31):
Calling him a cheater.

Speaker 15 (01:51:32):
You know, they did a look in the mirror.

Speaker 11 (01:51:34):
I believe they were one of the teams that got
caught banging on the can and OL two A wasn't
in part of any.

Speaker 3 (01:51:41):
Part of that.

Speaker 11 (01:51:42):
And I just don't get it.

Speaker 5 (01:51:44):
Man, When are they gonna stop?

Speaker 1 (01:51:46):
Yeah? Unfortunately, Robert, I have to say I do get
it because number one rule of life, people are idiots.
And I mean this whole John Boy thing that took over,
I don't like it. I don't think that it should
still be happening. I think it's ridiculous. I mean, he's
proven how good he is over the years, but people
are fools. They don't research that he didn't participate in this.

(01:52:07):
They don't research at the buzzer thing was one hundred
percent completely made up by but hurt John Boy. After
the Yankees got destroyed by jose Al Tuvy in that series,
and they're talking about literal wrinkles in his jersey or
or him holding on to a buzzer. So unfortunately I
get it, but I wish it was not happening. Thank you,
Robert Gregan Livingston your next step?

Speaker 3 (01:52:30):
What's up?

Speaker 1 (01:52:30):
Greg?

Speaker 14 (01:52:31):
I just don't get how the Savannah Bananas sail out
almost every stadium.

Speaker 1 (01:52:38):
And I'll hang up all right, you know what, that's
a good one.

Speaker 13 (01:52:41):
I was.

Speaker 1 (01:52:41):
It was on so I have multiple TV. I know
you do, too, Gordy. In this day and age, you
gotta have multiple TVs in your in your living room,
and and I was like flipping around looking for something
to put on the second TV, and it was like
Savanna Bananas was like, all right, whatever, I'll put this on.
I can't remember. I think I was watching the Astros
or something else. And I am with our caller like,
I was like, what is this? First of all, there's

(01:53:02):
points and there's runs. It's confusing. I don't know what
the rules are. The pictures are like grooving pitches every
five seconds. And the place at that time it was
in Charlotte. It was Bank of America Stadium, like where
the Panthers play and the place was completely packed.

Speaker 4 (01:53:18):
Yeah, it's it's fun entertaining baseball. They do stuff you
get extra points for, like a trick play and all kind.

Speaker 3 (01:53:25):
Of Yeah, Savannah Bananas does Chris Gordy well, I saw
him why when it came to how'd you like it?
It was fun. There's music playing.

Speaker 1 (01:53:33):
Twelve year old has had a good time.

Speaker 3 (01:53:34):
I mean, it's definitely for the kids.

Speaker 4 (01:53:36):
One of the guys at bat songs was the SpongeBob
theme song, and the whole every kid in the play
sang every word to the SpongeBob theme songs.

Speaker 1 (01:53:44):
Okay, well, who doesn't know all the words a SpongeBob.

Speaker 4 (01:53:47):
Like that was two years ago in sugar Land. They've
gotten so big now they're selling out in NFL stadiums
at MLB ballparks. So it's pretty insane.

Speaker 1 (01:53:55):
Yeah, definitely insane. But I will say I kind of
don't get it. Okay, that's gonna do it for I
just don't get it. But Terry has been waiting patiently,
so let's go ahead and go to him out on
the phone lines. Terry, go ahead, the floor is yours.

Speaker 15 (01:54:09):
Yeah, this is actually not Terry.

Speaker 1 (01:54:12):
This is Jordan's hand on the Okay, thank you, Jordan's
hand on a mobile. How are you feeling?

Speaker 5 (01:54:18):
And then, you know there's a lot of reports out there.

Speaker 15 (01:54:20):
I just want to get things straight.

Speaker 14 (01:54:22):
You know, I'm feeling.

Speaker 3 (01:54:23):
God, oh bone, no.

Speaker 1 (01:54:31):
Bone, I'm feeling sure, I'm not.

Speaker 14 (01:54:33):
I'm feeling better.

Speaker 1 (01:54:34):
It's healing and feeling good about it.

Speaker 15 (01:54:37):
And so, you know, I just.

Speaker 14 (01:54:38):
Want to get better every day.

Speaker 15 (01:54:39):
O gument ligament front of them.

Speaker 1 (01:54:42):
Oh, Terry, how many times did you practice this? Terry three?

Speaker 3 (01:54:52):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (01:54:52):
Well let's go back to the drawing board.

Speaker 3 (01:54:56):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (01:54:56):
I mean to me, it's not even it's not it's
not the ligament, not a fracture.

Speaker 3 (01:55:00):
It's inflammation.

Speaker 1 (01:55:02):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:55:03):
I mean that's the thing. And I have to keep
going back to the what's causing the inflammation. It's like, well,
you know, it just he picked up a bat, he
took some swings. It just got a little inflamed. Okay,
Like I get inflammation when I eat salty foods.

Speaker 1 (01:55:15):
I like inflammation in my hamstring right now, Like.

Speaker 3 (01:55:17):
Is this something that we just have to deal with?
But the like they keep this statement was like we've
clarified the thing that's causing him pain. Okay, what is it? Inflammation. Okay,
but wasn't he have an inflammation before? Yes? Okay, but
like all we sawd is the pain is not coming
from the inflammation came back. Yeah, They're like, we have
determined the pain he's evidences not.

Speaker 20 (01:55:38):
From the FRACTIONA. But what's the inflammation from? We don't know,
you know what. I know we have to talk about
it because the release was just put out.

Speaker 1 (01:55:49):
We're gonna talk about it in the Astros on Deck
show coming up in a couple of minutes. But I'm
thankful we're gonna get a day off of this, and
then when the Matt Thomas part of the Matt Thomas
Show with Ross comes back on Monday, we will discuss.
Both of us are kind of over this. It's like this,
let me know when he's back in the lineup. I
don't need to know the particulars. I don't need to
know the metacarpals, metatar sols, any of that stuff. Is say, hey,

(01:56:10):
give us as close as you can to some semblance
of a timeline, let us know when he's back into
the lineup, and that's it. I'm just I'm very much
over all this and the and this these ridiculous things
with the guy in the in the airplane. We've got
conspiracy theories, false information, thousand word releases by the Astros.

(01:56:31):
It's just like, man, I'm just ready to be done
with this.

Speaker 4 (01:56:35):
Yeah, I mean, like I said, let let me know
when he's ringing ready to swing about with the big
league club again.

Speaker 3 (01:56:41):
That's all. That's all I'm going for.

Speaker 1 (01:56:42):
Wake me up when he's in the lineup. That's that's
pretty much. He's feeling like they're doing alright without him. Yes,
we have a first place a club. They're eighteen games
above five hundred. There's seven games in first place in
the American League West.

Speaker 4 (01:56:55):
To me, this would all be way more frustrating if
they were losing and the offense stunk and they didn't
have your then it would be magnified.

Speaker 3 (01:57:03):
But right now they're doing all right without them. So
just keep us post and let us know what your.

Speaker 1 (01:57:06):
UN's back pitching and vibes. The story of the twenty
twenty five Houston Astros, who are eighteen games above five hundred.
They will go for nineteen games above five hundred here
coming up to ten on Sports Talk seven to ninety.
Your home for your Houston Astros. Ross via real Chris
Cordy with you. We are going to take a quick

(01:57:28):
Top of the Hour break. We're not going anywhere. We're
still hanging out at Pizza and Pints. Appreciate everybody to
come out and hang The pizza is flowing, the pints
are flowing as well here at Pizza Pintes at Carbock Brewing.
We're gonna be here till one forty, but we're gonna
