Speaker 1 (00:01):
Ten on one man h Town. Good morning, and welcome
to a Tuesday edition of The Matt Thomas Show with Ross.
I'm Matt, He's Ross. Frankie is our producer today and
tomorrow he's not. We didn't get rid of Jonathan. I
mean the thought has crossed probably Jonathan's mind, but he's
here for now, today and tomorrow. Correct, Yeah, today and tomorrow.
So extended weekend for Jonathan much earned. I mean much

(00:24):
earned is a relative term, but that's fine. Uh So
there will be some technical issues and we'll get past them.
Why he's worried he's running live shows. Yeah, but Doug
Pik or something he's not done believing or not. That's
gonna be utter trained. Well, I mean that's part of
being initiated here as iHeart. Yeah, that's great, right, So
if you hear things that don't sound professional like we
work in Tyler, you'll figure it out. Why it's gonna

(00:45):
be Frankie's fault. So Ross, how was her Labor day?
Labor Day was great, Labor Day weekend was good, had
a good time. I guess. Let's see Manchester City loss,
Texas Longhorns loss and the Astro split a four game
series with a terrible team. Sports wise, it wasn't great.
So last personally it was pretty good. Last Thursday, I uh,

(01:06):
we had got feelings while you were gone, and I
had the text and I had the Astras going six
and four in their homesteak because I was just like,
it's there's second tier teams, and I thought I felt
like I felt dirty saying it had three losses so
far in this homestand oh okay, it's still going. So
the Yankees are in town. There's three of the Yankees.
Now they can sit up in their chairs though, because
the Yankees are here, Well, it's it's what the Astros do.

(01:28):
They play against the upperational on teams and blank the
bet against the mids. Sometimes it's like you have beautiful
relations with that supermodel ten, and then that three and
four walks in and you don't know what to do
with her. I don't feel like that analogy works at all.
I think it's pretty good. Actually, Okay, I have a
friend of mine and I won't mention his name. Oh no,

(01:48):
are you doing movies again? No? No, just for three
seconds into the now that we will definitely do that
at some point. Sure, but it's almost more fun when
we have Frankie. Yeah, how old is he? How old
are you, Frankie, Frankie, you look like you're in the
mid twenties. Twenty six, No, he looks like he's he
said twenty six. Would you say he looks like he's
in his what mid twenties? He said he was twenty six. Okay, No,

(02:10):
he looks older, looks like he's this is the glasses.
He's a professor at a community. Yeah, exactly, he looks polished,
he looks he's ready to give you a tell you
to do a thousand professions tomorrow. Yeah, exactly. He's in
the wrong business. Yeah, he's gonna make some funny like
chemistry puns before he's his uh, his class. Yeah, and
he's got girls out of the ying gang coming to
the house. There's it's like one on one after the other.

(02:32):
It's the chemistry professor. Oh yeah, there's no way. Oh
for sure. They need to get this passed. He's being
a predator. Let mean, he's teaching HCC chem one on one.
He's got to be able to work his way to
get so those girls can get into the Beard four
your institution. All right, anyway, can we get back to sport.
You started it. No, I'm finishing. Here we go u Oh,

(02:54):
I just shows the three games up in the Mariners. Oh,
they're up three on the Mariners. By the way, the
Mariners absolutely sucking the road. They guy are not by
the Rays last night. I don't get it. They have
How does everybody feeling How are the Mariners fans feeling
about the Mariners hitting coaches? Can I read you? And
Mike Is? I really don't want to to let I
put on Twitter. I don't need it. I've actually had enough.

(03:16):
It's too bad of hitting coach discourse. Well, friend of
the show, Mike, Mike always listens someone. God love you
Mike for listen. Wait a minute, is this the guy
that emails you a bunch of angry stuff? Correct? He
said he was done with the team. Yeah, you said
you were done, Mike, You're a liar. Stop sending matt
emails about the team. If you said you're done with it,
it's okay, it's it's part of the belt. No. No,

(03:38):
I'm sick of these people who whine and cry every
single day about the team because they have nothing else
better going on in their lives. Mike Is, I'm actually
tired of it. It's it's it's he has to understand.
And I said, he's I'm going to make fun of him,
and he it's only in a very loving way. He
sends me this email on Saturday. I did the I
worked Saturday and Monday. By the way, okay, deep breath,
just stay with me and with it. The subject line

(04:01):
of the email was garbage. Okay, here we go. He's
talking about waste management. Mike, this team is toast. He's
calling you, Mike. Correct, all right, Mike, stay with me
on this bullpennis text. Coaching staff is bla. Team morale
has vanished, the leadership conflict with corre adjoining pitchers, blaming

(04:25):
defensive and hitting, no strategic batting, only measuring Miles Prower
off the bat angles, et cetera. This season is finished
ranked near Lascen's all star, breaking all offensive stats. It's
time to regroup and change front office and team management.
We are at best three big league position players, deep
automatic seals for opponents. Managers asleep with his new glasses,

(04:47):
no fire from him, and team is the same. Altuve
pouting on his own performance just a disastrous. Didn't even
argue there about being on a baseline sad, but the
end of the era has arrived. Signed Mike, Mike Good.
Listen to the show calls occasionally, don't watch just don't
watch the team bringing you down. And you're that negative
about a team that is three games up in first place,

(05:09):
don't watch the team seriously it certainly you should block him.
I need you to block him for me. It's an email.
He doesn't know. I think you can block email. I
guess you could. Yeah, that's our it's fine. No, it's
not fine, it's free. No, it's it's making me upset. Okay,
next time you read a mic email, I will leave

(05:31):
the room that teams fair because all that does is
all that negativity and that BS is just bringing me down. Yes,
the team is not where they were in twenty nineteen
when their lineup was like Correa, Altuve, Brantley, Uh Tucker,
you're on and whatever the hell else Springer, when they
had one of the deepest lineups in baseball, and they're

(05:53):
one of the best teams in baseball. They are not
the team that they were even three years ago when
they were World Series contenders. We need to readjust our
expectations and by the way, they're so horrible. They're in
first place by three games. By the way, shout out
to the hitting coaches. They did whatever they told them

(06:13):
yesterday before the game. Beautiful abs, beautiful abs by Alex
Intron and Troyce Nicker in those clutch runners in scoring
position situations, six or fifteen. They had a tough week
after a good weekend in Baltimore, the hitting coaches put
together some great play appearances yesterday. You're doing this. I'm

(06:35):
doing this to poke Its hell, it's working, and I
got more. I'm falling for it. Oh my god. People. Now, look,
maybe Troy Nicker and Alex Intron are gonna be gone
at the end of the season. I don't know. I
don't really care. Guess what, when they hire new hitting coaches,
if the if and when that ever happens, I'm gonna
say the same thing. The hitters need to do their

(06:56):
job and that's that. Oh yeah, they've have had a
big slip in production this year. Yeah, East Hik Praatis
is one of their best hitters. He's been gone for
months now. You had Jordan Alvarez has played like thirty
some odd games since he's come back, all of a sudden,
he's drawn a bunch of walks, hitting home runs. He

(07:16):
looks pretty good. Looks like that guy is all right.
And then it's been a mixed bag of like you've
had Cooper Hummel and Mauricio Dubaughn and Taylor Tremmel and
a bunch of jay Yeah, they didn't turn Jacob Melton
into Ted Williams. Oh he's hitting coaches, We got to
fire him. Jose Al two. They had three runs batted
in yesterday with a big home run at the end.

(07:39):
Let's get all the credit to the hitting coaches. Christian
Walker's been better, Carls Kray has been hitting good in
a Nastro's uniform. Jeremy Ping is having a breakout season.
By the way, Oh well, hitting coaches are the worst
on the planet because production is down, because everybody's been
hurt in the lineups just not as lengthy as it
used to be. You relate to this to me, Yes,

(08:05):
I is why we start the week. It's fine. I
haven't even drink on my coffee. Know I'm gonna take
a pause. I'm gonna sip from my coffee. I'm not
gonna pause because I want to get into a deep
dive of Texas Ohio State from the weekend. I've come
with a deep dive here. The assessment is there. You
want to break down all the fifteen touchdowns scored in
that game? Who told you to take the under? You

(08:25):
told me to take you under? Thank you very much.
You know what. I oversold my stuff on Arch, even
though I told myself all off season not to buy
into the hype. Can I tell you? And this is
the God's honest truth? Uh huh. I would not schedule
these week one Juggernauts. No, they shouldn't do it in
a week one. I've been saying that all off season. Two,
I'm sure you can't wait till Week two. You have
to have I don't care if it's a new quarterback.

(08:46):
Here's the reason why. For the foreseeable future, as long
as the transfer portal and nil and moving guys around
year to year to year continue to take place. And
I don't know if there'd be any sign of that
changing ever. You've got too many new faces and too
many new schemes and new money, two quarterbacks, restrictions on practices.
They're not doing spring games now. I would ultimately, I

(09:10):
like I'd like to see two things. I'd like for
all skills, especially the Juggernauts, to schedule down. I know
that doesn't make you feel any better, but Texas arch
play in San Jose State would be much better for
him on this past weekend than playing Ohio State in
the shoe in the shoe. Yeah, you could play in
the shoe with San Jose State and be just fine. Yeah,
it's part of it. I would also, and I was

(09:32):
gonna say this for to tell the truth, but I'm
gonna move it on. I would also if I was
college football, I would schedule a preseason game. And I
don't know, if you do it again, you could play
an I mean do something. Charge five dollars a ticket
and give it to the give it to the kids
for help your nil play. Then they called it the
spring game. Then they got rid of those. But I mean,

(09:55):
I just thought, because I think Texas is a really
good football team, they are, They're gonna be just fine,
just like I think Alabama. Well, I don't know bout Alabama.
That was a bad, bad loss. I'm trying to think
Notre Dame is gonna be just fine. But there is
too minutes, there's too much full optimism in college sports
after a week one week one victory, and there's too

(10:17):
much woe is me after a week one loss. And
if I'm an ad, as much as this intrigues me,
I mean as much as the hoopla of Texas, Ohio
State had us going this weekend, You had LSU Clemson,
you had Notre Dame Miami, which was a great football
game TCU North Carolina was supposed to be but it
didn't turn out that way yesterday. Or Bill, I'm telling you,

(10:37):
if I'm an ad, if I'm a football coach, I
want a lightweight. Give me utep every damn day you can.
Now here's the thing about it too that makes me sad.
If you're a lightweight, you're gonna get called out being
a lightweight. I mean what show I was watching, but
they were talking about you know what, Thank God, text
is a chance to get really you know, back on

(10:58):
their feet after playing Cupcake Sam Houston State, Cupcake, Utip Cupcake.
Who you guys, I got next? If I went to
those schools, Huh, that's embarrassing you role, So you do
have to know your role. Sorry, bear Cats, And remember
you're taking a check to be called the cupcake exactly.
So I'm not gonna feel too sorry for.

Speaker 2 (11:19):
You to win.

Speaker 1 (11:20):
Win, and you can win the game and pull but
I feel State, But I am not bad about that.
I do feel bad because I don't want any more
if there are a lot of great institutions higher education
that shouldn't be called cupcake. It's about the football program,
and I think people understand that, but it still doesn't
mean that you feel bad about it. Well, those guys
probably don't. State was catching stray. It's all during game

(11:40):
day on Saturday. I think hermstream mentioned McNee State twice
at the same paragraph. I even know, Well, isn't it
just was he saying State or was he saying McNeese?
He was saying McNee state, which everybody calls people McNeice
call me. Why do they hate that? Now? Who knows?
It's like Louisian Louisan Alafia calls himself Louisiana. Sorry Louisiana,

(12:01):
you're louisianaa fia your ooh la lat and you'll never
change and take that paycheck and get your ass kicked.
You and Rice went there to beat We beat them
this weekend. Really, yeah, Oh, you don't want to get
beat by Rice. I'm such a nerd showing up kicking
your ass. You get Frankie the producing a teaching in
chemistry one on one at Rice. Yes he is. Yeah,
he's got a lot of camera. He does a lot

(12:21):
of teaching. Is he in the Robert C McNair building
that roberts c probably never went in. Bob may have, well,
I mean cal may have it got callin NBA from there.
I don't know if he ever went to the building. True.
All right, Astros win raised, beat the Mariners three game lead.
We'll get to that. We've got Joe a spot at
twelve thirty. We got gout feelings before that at eleven thirty.
We have NFL rewind at one twenty this afternoon. We've

(12:43):
got to believe it or not. We've got college football.
A lot of little things. And oh, by the way,
the Texans depth chart is out excellent. We'll talk about
that a deep dive. Well, at least, I mean we
talk about it. We'll get to it. For me, football football,
we should talk a little bit about it. Yeah, we're
going to Okay, even in Angers eighty percent of our audience,
we're still going to talk about Angers. Eighty percent of them.

(13:03):
It doesn't please them, angus fifty percent of these hosts.
Who's that? I don't care because guess what the l
a Rams baby? What Mike was? Texans? That did the
Houston Texas baby might win in Los Angeles? What's the line?
I didn't even look two and a half. I think
alf Rams? Yeah, Magic just Affrican move. Apparently is his

(13:25):
back Okay, I don't know. Is gonna be wearing to
backbrace the whole game? He met doctor injection and Phil
is just fine? Apparently. How were gonna see Remy Rorapparo?
Got it? The Texans is a Remy aroppolo. That would
be great. I took the under in that one, by
the way, too. Oh totals forty three and a half
under ten to fourteen Sports Talk seven euty All right, Uh,

(13:48):
what a weekend for college football? What a weekend for
the Astros in both good and bad ways. Again, the
Astros did not look great. They struggled offensively, and they
scored eight runs yesterday and the Mariners lost again on
the road. I got news for your ross. If the
Mariners just don't want to one on the road. This
mid Astros team is playing under five hundred last two months.

(14:08):
Maybe good enough anyway. Yeah, maybe the Rangers of the
team we should be scared about, because right now the
Mariners can't win away from Seattle Washington. Those Rangers not
going away. They are not just pesky. Rangers won six
in a row four and a half back. The Astros
either will be good enough to win the division and
make them hang in the playoffs, or they won't be.

(14:29):
We'll see, nobody's gonna die over it. We don't need
to send five hundred word negative emails to everybody about it.
That's what I've been getting. I listened to Gordy on Sunday.
There was a is are the players laying down for
a spot? Like to get him fired? That was interesting
to me. That is one of the dumbest things I

(14:49):
think I've ever heard. Yeah, what else was that I
did hear? That was awful? That other day. I've been
turning to write them down. Now, see, I need you
to not write these down. I actually tweeted about it.
Let me see what it is, because look, when it's
like yesterday, we had a good conversation on the time,
I had one call in ten things. It was good,

(15:11):
was all right, nice, I mean that was bat No,
I actually thought about it. You were basically talking about
how great the how great the hitting coaches did yesterday. No, no, no,
they had a banner day. I mean six or fifteen
r as the scoring position. That's a four hundred average
for those who plan at home. The caller also criticized
the announcer Mark Ford for not being a big enough homer.
Robert's a big enough homer. He does just fine proper home. Right.

(15:36):
His name was Mark. No, you're on Mike. No, I'm Mike,
He's Mark. It's very confusing. It is what it is,
all right. Seven one three two one two five seven
seven one three two one two five sevent I don't
think we're gonna get into a deep dive of TCU
North Carolina football, but I can we can talk about
it on a macro side of things. Okay, So ESPN

(15:57):
makes the Labor Day game about him. There's endless interviews
were you know, Bill Belichick does not get out of
his shell. He's got the cutoff shirt again, he's got
the twenty five year old hussy. Uh you know why
is she a hussy? Because she is? You're danning somebody
fifty years older than You're a hussy. Seriously, I might say,
what the old hussey? Let me look at the dictionary

(16:19):
for hussey. Let me call her a horror? Is that
what you want instead o whore?

Speaker 3 (16:22):
Well?

Speaker 1 (16:23):
I mean yeah, that's turning it up a notch. Okay,
I'm gonna go drop it down to hussy a girl
or woman who behaves in a disrespectful or inappropriate way,
who has many casual sexual relationships. Okay, hey, what do
you say? Yeah, hussand down on main Street's shot in Hudson.

(16:44):
Where do you go to find dudes and women fifty
years older than you? They're on a plane next to
each other. Yeah, that's what that's the story. Weird story.
That's exactly right. I didn't buy her on an escort page.
It wasn't a high and escort. Matt see hussy, We

(17:04):
fell in love hooker with a heart of gold. Haven't
you seen pretty woman?

Speaker 4 (17:08):
No?

Speaker 1 (17:09):
Oh you haven't. No, of course I do? You actually
have not?

Speaker 5 (17:11):
Have you not? No?

Speaker 1 (17:12):
I've seen like half you know on TV, but I
haven't seen sat down and watched the whole thing. Okay,
that's the gist of it. Richard Gear falls in love
with the hooker the end. Yeah, that's pretty much just
I was gonna say, I was gonna ask you quick
questions about it, but you pretty much know that they're
and five Stars. We stay at their hotel where they stayed.

(17:33):
Oh really, yeah, I can say it's it's the Beverly
whol Chair. That's the aka Hotel of Pretty Woman. Oh really? Yeah?
Do they have like they can you sleep on the
bed where they got it?

Speaker 4 (17:47):
What?

Speaker 5 (17:47):
No?

Speaker 1 (17:48):
I mean I guess you could, but that was also
almost forty years I imagine they cleaned and changed sheets,
I would think, so, I mean that's gone down and
basically every hotel room you've ever laid in in your
life just saying smites too and all that kind of stuff. Gross,
I know the hotels I stay at the fan the
five Stars. Oh it's even worse. Are you sure you

(18:08):
were telling me celebrity escorts? Oh that's even one. That
means there's like six women on the bed at once.
All right, So college football this is your fault again.
You're talking about hussies. So North, how much did you
see much of the game yesterday? I it was on

(18:29):
while I was doing two fantasy drafts, so I was
not really super invested in. But every time I looked up,
TCU was getting like a seventy five yard touchdown. So TCU.
So North Carolina scores on their opening drive, and I mean,
in very very quick fashion, they have this transfer quarterback
at South Alabama. Major apple White was his coach. Shout
out to Major, a friend of the show, and uh,

(18:50):
they are up seven to nothing, and I mean that.
I think it's called Kazar Stadiums were North calnt I've
done a game there before. Those people are going, we're
losing their minds. And then the rest of the game
took place, oh man, and every time they would show
a picture a video of a shot of Belichick, he

(19:11):
was like a deer in headlines. He didn't know what
was he even speaking into the headset?

Speaker 2 (19:15):
Was he was?

Speaker 1 (19:15):
It turned on that? I mean, was there anybody? Was
there anybody making any sort of rect And then poor
Belichick's son, Steve was feeling the heat of this too,
because he's probably the one that's the most alert of
the two guys in the left. I mean, you know, yeah,
the memes of him were pretty good. And then Max
Johnson comes in and backs up after the starting quarterback
gets hurt. Yes, it's a former Texas A and and Maggie.
And you know, I did not realize. What didn't you

(19:37):
realize his dad was Brad is Brad Johnson. Yeah, I
didn't know that. You also didn't realize he's the same
age as Belichick's girlfriend twenty four correct, Yes, so he's
not a hussy. He's just a regular old twenty four
year old. I don't know he's been horn around programmed
to program. Yeah, you're twenty four, still in college. I

(20:01):
mean I was in twenty four and so on college,
but at least I was working. He's trying to be
bros a eighteen year olds l s U, A and
M and North Carolina two seasons apiece. God blessed portal
and uh COVID and injuries all that helped out. Yeah,
he was supposed to save LSU, then he was supposed
to save A and M, and now he's supposed to

(20:22):
save North Carolina. Well, I mean, I'm sure dad did
okay financially, so he didn't to worry about necessarily. I
just get a degree from something. North Carolina is a
decent they're all credit schools, I mean academic academics. Mea
LSU's not. But everything the two are are very good. Yeah, exactly.
LSU they have like shoe weaving. Yeah. I believe what
they call LSU is open enrollment. If the kids would

(20:43):
say it properly. Cajun spices three oh one. That's the expert. Yeah,
that's the expert. Make a Masterst. Cayenne. And now I
went to Paprika. Now all right, sorry, sorry Gordy, Sorry,
anybody that's in Phillia with ill shoot. But you guys
know you're it's you know, t have brains to go there.
I mean, let's be brutally honest. Uh okay, So where're

(21:07):
we going with this? I don't know. So they just
got their ask kick for. There was no other game
to put on. There was no like regional broadcast, there
was no other We're bearing this game on ESPN Oho.
That was on ESPN Labor Day night. Everybody's getting trying
to get settled back into bed because schools in the
North are starting up today. People are going back to
work after a long weekend. You put the game on

(21:27):
and you just watch it. Get from bad doors. But
I thought it was quite entertaining. Well, the question is
was was the hype was significantly higher than what was
the talents that's there at this point, and I have
him muted, but it still ended up on my timeline.
Skip Bayless like early in the game, was talking about
how they had a championship level, like a national championship

(21:48):
level offense North Carolina. Yeah. Well it's funny because I
one of my very good friends is in North Carolina
grad lives in the Charlotte area, and I was He
and I were texting the first quarter and then the
game took place after that, and I was like, I'm
going to leave them alone. By the way, shout out
to me for saying sorry not sending you this hard
for your lost text. So you you want to pat
on the back. Yeah, for not sending me a mean text. Correct,

(22:11):
you know what, It's showing a softer side of me
than in a while.

Speaker 6 (22:16):
Now.

Speaker 1 (22:16):
If you lose, if you lose the next three games,
then I'm gonna have any of the next three is
fair game, I guess. But that won't happen. And then
Florida played who they played some sloppy UH Texas plays
at Florida after that, So yeah, schedule's tough. I don't
know if they'll be in the latest rankings, but they
were fifteenth talking about the Gatas and then oh you
after that, which I want to go to but Astro's playoffs,

(22:41):
well as could be going to Toronto. You think our
company and a Villigi to go to Toronto. You know
expensive Toronto is car buck brilling. Let's go Carbucks like
car Bucks like I've only got a certain is in order,
just in case Gordy's I don't know about that. I
think you I don't get that felony cleared out. In
twenty nine The Matt Thomas Show with Ross, all right,

(23:02):
so we're gonna give you a chance. Here, I'm gonna
I'm gonna step away from the microphone and you're just
going to talk at nauseum for about two minutes like
a like a uh, what do you call it? A
homily about what you saw a Saturday between Texas and
Ohio s date me. Yeah, okay, if you want me
to just too. I'm not asking for the whole segment,

(23:22):
just two minutes. I think I can do it in
one minute, all right, minute is fine, but I'm gonna
stay out of your way. You see all the scoring
I'll do. I can do it in ten seconds seven
one three two one two five Semininti seven one three
two one two five seven night. We had some dangerous
weather the last couple days, at least parts of our
town did, and that meant trees could be an issue.
And Joe'll be with us coming up today at twelve

(23:44):
thirty seven one three two one two five Seminnati seven
one three two one two five Sevenini. Yes, the Astros
start a three game series with the Yankees seven ten,
tonight seven ten, Wednesday, six forty on Thursday. Okay, and

(24:04):
tonight's game is on TBS. But if you live in
the Houston area or areas where Space City should be,
you cannot watch the game. So please don't call and
say why when I watch the game on TBS even
though I don't have Space City. Now, listen another game
here on Sports Talk seven ninety your home for your
Houston Astros perfectly said, all right, one minute? Oh, do
we can we start a clock on you? Or do
we need?

Speaker 5 (24:23):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (24:24):
Do you want? Yeah, I'll do a clock, hold on,
give me a one minute buzzer here? Okay, you like
you can only go one minute? Huh, that's all gonna go?
One minute? All right, he says marathon to me. I
don't think I think I've said that too many times. Words.
You can only go a minute at a time, that's fine,
what's wrong with that? Yeah? Is there time to cuddle
after or no? No, that's included. Oh is it okay?

(24:46):
Very good? Start the clock. This is one minute Ross
talking about his beloved Longhorns. And let's face it again,
I would rather play San Jose State, Sam Houston State,
or Central or whatever the hell you're playing in the
next few weeks to get fat and happy before the
start of playing real competition. All right, man, Yeah, obviously

(25:08):
it was a big game of the shoe over the weekend,
and it was going to be a defensive battle. I
was very foolish of me to think they wasn't going
to go anywhere close to over I thought arch Manning
would play a little bit better. He was certainly off
target early on, especially on a couple of short area
throws where it seemed like Sark was maybe trying to
get him in a rhythm and he just wasn't very

(25:29):
good there. Then he made some good throws later in
the game. The run game was good. They outperformed Ohio
State in terms of yards game, I think it was
like three thirty to two hundred and three. I'll pull
it up three thirty six to two hundred and three.
Couldn't get it done in the red zone. You got
physicaled upfront. Sark did play it close to the vest
with the play calling and try to rely on the defense,

(25:49):
which he's done a lot in a lot of big games.
So the criticism that he's a little bit too conservative
in these big games, I think is valid. But also
when you have one of the best defenses of the country,
it makes sense to kind of try to rely on that.
So I would like to see arch Manning turn it
loose a little bit more. But he was having some
trouble processing the defense of Matt Patricia and could have
been better. Att Patricia. Wow, what a star now, I

(26:11):
mean he was always a good NFL coordinator whos allows
the head coach? But boy, these and by the way,
another one for you, how about Gus malzan Is a
new OC at Florida State. He got his flowers this
weekend too, Yes he did.

Speaker 7 (26:24):
You know.

Speaker 1 (26:24):
The reality is this, you can get really really good
coordinators because you're paying these coordinators multi millions of dollars.
You can be good right away quick. And you know
what also helps coordinators having a bunch of five star
athletes all over the field. So, hey, Matt, you could
design a good defense with Ohio State players. That's true.
So I have a few more assumption no assumptions assertions

(26:45):
after watching the college football this weekend. Okay, you can
be lousing in twenty twenty five and be really good
the next season or twenty four. I mean, the opportunity
for you to be really good on a fast turnaround
is incredible because of the portal and because of nil
and because of the twenty million dollars these schools can
now spend on these programs, in these athletes. The chances

(27:08):
of you being a long down trotten program, especially if
you're considered one and to have success in the past.
If you're bad for five or six years, you're just
not doing it right. I mean, I'm not saying Florist
State's going to go all the single from two to
ten to ten to two. But you beat Alabama and
now granted Alabama's five and five in their last ten games,
but still Alabama, you won your home field, and you

(27:29):
had massive changes all over the place and you won
that football game. Yeah, it's but it's to a level
I mean, but there's also there's ten or you know,
we went through a list whatever it is, ten, twelve,
fifteen programs who all think they should be winning the
national champion Their fan bases think they should be winning
the National champions ESPEC, especially when those team bases are
asked to supply more money for these kids. The pressure
on these programs, especially from your high end donors. I'll

(27:53):
use Texas Tech as an example. How the world does
Cody Campus like, I think that's a guy's name that's
a big nil boost for them. He goes to all
of his buddies and say, Hey, I need you to
kick in a million dollars. If Texta Tech goes eight
and five or eight and four again this year during
the regular season, they'd be like, I give you all
this money for what The pressure, especially for schools that
do have money, is going to be intensified, which is

(28:16):
you know what, That's what college athletics is all about.

Speaker 7 (28:18):
Now.

Speaker 1 (28:18):
Pressure. There's no more for the love of the game. Although,
as I say that, just sitting around flipping the channel Saturday, Sunday, Monday,
it is fun. I didn't worry about it. I bet
exactly nobody thinks about NIL on Sunday people. It's ruining
the sports. Stadiums are full, ratings are good. It's not
ruining the sport. No, it's not ruining it. But it's
putting pressure on some people. Cale Debor took Washington to

(28:40):
the National Championship game, they're already talking about replacements for
him after one game. Yeah, he's got like a sixty
million dollars buyout or something like that. By the way,
I saw this, and I wish I would have saved it.
Apparently there's not trouble. But apparently there is a lack
of nf NIL funding at Alabama that other schools in

(29:01):
the SEC are not having to worry about it. That
kind of makes sense, right, Alabama, middle of nowhere, Well,
it takes is one big booster. I mean, that's largs
in the middle of nowhere. And that guy Cody Campbell's
right and checks left and right. Yeah, what Organs on
ILB without Phil Knight without Phil Knight. Yeah, but you're
talking about like multi billionaires. But I don't know. You

(29:26):
didn't have to wear shoes at Alabama in class, so
I don't know if there's a bunch of billionaires coming
out of there. I'm just saying another assessment I made. Okay,
Notre Dame Miami on Sunday night. Miami spent a lot
of money too. Miami spends a lot of money. Miami
also to full Stadium. Miami is a private school that

(29:48):
has a distinguished football history, a distinguished academia, and it's
a very It's the most difficult school to get in
in the state of Florida. It's way harder get into
Miami than it is a getting Florida state, way harder
to getting into Florida, Central Florida, Central Florida. Like they're
inviting you in, come on, I mean they're they're basically

(30:09):
the I mean they're they're the I mean, we're gonna say,
I know what you're gonna say. No, No, I was
gonna say I was gonna take a SFA jab but
there's no reason to do that. Yeah, it'd be rude.
There's Tennam was full. They Miami has something and now again,
remember it's been dormant for a while there. But when

(30:31):
they're good, their city rallies around the University of Miami.
Mm hmm. And my question is, and I know the
answer this, so I'm gonna go and let you have
this is this is a little saltball for you. Okay,
why can't Houston have that with Houstonians? Tell me the truth.
If we all of a sudden, regularly based regular on
the regular basis won nine ten games, why has to

(30:55):
start with a history? Okay, that seems that's fair obvious.
But Mia Amy, did they start winning in the eighties? Yeah?
But did you see the crowd yesterday. I thought it
was going to be on Sunday. I thought it was
going to be heavily Notre Dame influenced. It looked like
ninety percent of the stadium and that's an NFL stadium
was wearing orange. One of the things you can sell

(31:17):
recruits on. First of all, everybody's paying now then Miami's
paying a lot of money. They're getting a ton of
money as far as transfer, both transfer portal and for recruits.
So first of all, you need a bunch of people
to put a bunch of money in, but a reason
to get a bunch of people U of H. Like,
there's a lot of rich people who are invested in
U of H football, But you invest more when there's

(31:40):
a history. I suppose when it matters more. Does that
make sense? Well, okay, as a legendary program, it feels
like a more alums and more likely to pour more
money in there. But they don't have the alums though.
Miami is a quarter as big as University of Houston.
What's the enrow? Is it have to look but high?

(32:00):
I want to say it's about ten thousand. Maybe I'm
wrong about that, but it's a very difficult school to
get into. Yeah it is. Well that's another thing too,
Maybe they end up producing a lot more rich people.
I don't know that's true, but if that was the case,
what that says? Nineteen thousand Miami. That's actually large, larger
than I thought it was me But compared to Florida
and Florida State, that pales of comparison to those schools.

(32:21):
You have this Florida, it's huge. You have a recruit
you have a fertile recruiting base. Maybe there's less competition
than for you of h I mean because they're already
behind in history and money from Texas and A and
M in Oklahoma. You have to put in the mix. LSU,
you have to put in the mix and what's at
Florida Florida State, and then Miami would be that's the

(32:44):
that's the big Florida. Yeah, I'll just say this. I
was jealous. Well, you know, at the end of the day,
cut the check, many let's go. But that wasn't cutting
the check. You can't even cut a check. But if
you can't cut a check to get fifty thousand people
in the stadium, but it's not even only the billionaires,
it's you get that much more from say the regular
U of h alum who's who is a grad can

(33:06):
donate five hundred dollars. Maybe if the if the program
had a rich history and they really wanted to be
good and you wanted to make your Longhorn or Aggie
buddies mad, maybe bumping up to seven fifty. I mean proximity.
You think proximity to U. T and A and m
hurts the University of Houston, because thinking about Miami hurt Florida.
He is in the very north part of the state.
Florida State's in the north part of the state. Uh huh,

(33:29):
I mean Miami's in South. Miami's in the deepest south
part of the state. You just you just don't have
the history. I don't have to tell you. Well, there's
no question Miami football has a distinguish. Now, some of
it's not good. I mean, criminals versus convicts was brought
up a many many times. I mean, but mostly you
say that you people know what that is. Yeah, I
get it. There's some prestige there. I get it. Ten

(33:51):
forty five. It's some Matt and Ross with you here
on the program We have Gut Feelings at eleven thirty.
Today Joe spotted with us at twelve thirty here on
these air waves what we call sports Talk seven ninety
seven one three two one two five seven nine zero
Old John in League City on the Matt Thomas Show
at Ross at ten fifty two, John, good morning, Yeah,
good morning's one of the guys. Hi, we're good.

Speaker 2 (34:14):
Oh, So you know talking about we talked about this
before with the Cougar's attendants. You know, we got all too.
You know, they were four and eight last year, you know,
and you get thirty thousand out there. I guess I
was about what I'm gonna do we're out there. I mean,
the skin it section. I think from what I understand,
they they pull them their loaded, right. So it's like
it's like these fans I see on the internet all

(34:35):
the time. It's like, sep We're complaining about oh the girlage,
you know, the parking and every all of a sudden stuff.
It sounds like it's always something with super football fans.

Speaker 1 (34:44):
You know, you know what it is, John, we did.
We just aren't great fans. I mean, that's just the
reality of it. We're just not.

Speaker 2 (34:51):
I mean, we've got the probably the best basketball program
in the country.

Speaker 1 (34:55):
Yeah, we let me.

Speaker 2 (34:57):
We fell into it. And thank god, we have this
game which.

Speaker 1 (35:02):
We don't fill up. We don't fill up that game
arena either. We we have a difficult time filling I
mean the seats are sold, but they're not sitting in
those seats. I mean, go watch a game. There are
empties all over the place. We as a University of
Houston fan base have done a horrific job of supporting
our programs and it's and it's taking its toll. It
just has.

Speaker 2 (35:20):
You're absolutely right, and we have not for a bunch
of greatdowners like Solman and so on.

Speaker 3 (35:26):
You know, we wouldn't be where we are and have
the facilities.

Speaker 1 (35:29):
That we are if not for Tillman, there will be
no for Tiita Center, and we would not have the
hopefully national champion s type team. Again, this should coming
up this year, but I mean, we just you know,
and thanks for the phone call. You got a lot
of static and background noise there. We just don't. We
just don't draw flies. We just don't. This is a reality.
And I know that SFA was not a it's not
a team that you can hang your hat on. And

(35:51):
the conference is I mean playing in Conference USA and
American Vault. I mean it, there's a variety of factors,
but we don't. We don't have forty thousand people that
say we don't care who you play, We're gonna be there.
Never have and so that's just the reality of it,
and I wish that that was the case, but it's not.
I mean, look A and M's got Utah State coming in.

(36:14):
I mean, who gives a crap about Utah State? Although
the friend of mine's their voice. They're gonna have one
hundred thousand people there. They had one hundred and six
thousand whatever it was for UTSA. Your squad is gonna
play San Jose State, You're gonna have well, you're gonna
have one hundred thousand people. Yes they are. You just
go because you love the school, regardless the opponent. Yeah,
it was. I mean it is interesting, and I don't

(36:37):
know how much of it has to do with just
the fact that Houston is in a big city. I mean,
we talked about winning and building that history. I mean,
Aggie's have it won a national championship since the nineteen thirties.
And the reality is this in big cities schools have
a difficult time. Cincinnati, same situation. They don't draw a flat.
They do better, but they're they're they're not boasting about

(37:00):
their football attendance. Miami. I'd have to go look, but
it looks like every time I watch a Miami game
the play is pretty much filled. Then that maybe just
because it's the last couple of years, last couple of years,
But what was it like nine years ago when they
were five and seven? Who knows who else is big
city schools. New York teams don't draw flies, LA kind
of comes and goes. Northwestern they don't. They don't run

(37:21):
the Northwestern games, just don't USC for years. Was good. Yeah,
Ucla got its ass kicked by Utah over the weekend.
I mean by like forty six to ten or something
like that. Tulane people don't go People in New Orleans
don't go to Tulane games just because it's football. Yeah,

(37:42):
USC gets packed, but they also have a long history
of winning. So I just my point was, I was
just jealous, and I'm just as a guy that pours
my emotions out to you tend to two weekdays. I
looked at the game on Saturday night, Grand Notre Dame
coming in is a lot more sex appeal. Now, then
if Miami played FAU would would would pro player stadium
or whatever they're calling a hard rock be fire rock?

Speaker 4 (38:04):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (38:04):
No chance that would be more than twenty eight thousand, though,
You're right, and they wouldn't and be truth betid they
won twenty eight thousand. Now there was a strong student section, yes,
but our non student section didn't do particularly well. Now,
I'll tell you this, we better be full for Colorado.
Say what you all about Dion Sanders and how he

(38:25):
probably is perhaps way over rated as a coach. Would
you say anything less than a seal that would be
a disappointment. No, But I would say, aything less than
thirty thousand would be disappointment. Yeah, twenty eight for a SFA.
You can't get twelve more for Colorado. It wasn't twenty eight. Okay,
I'm sorry, you're right. I want I'm talking about now.
I'm saying they can at least say tickets sold. Same
thing when I see it. The game kicks out once

(38:49):
a game six thirty Saturday. It is a Saturday night. No,
it's a Friday night. Oh, it's just not big time football.
I'm sorry, man, I'm not. No, if it's an ESPN
Friday night game, have been games playing on Friday Colorado? Uh,
I mean it's sexy to me. At least you're off
the Plus. We're on the real network. Now they took

(39:12):
the Plus off. Now we're playing the Plus on the
rice on see and well, also, it's not because it's
you of age, it's because it's Colorado. I mean that's fine. No,
but you have made cars. That's a decent big twelve game.
You want to put a decent big Colorado. Uh will
never be on a plus no matter where it is. Oh,
trust me, Colorad only playing, uh playing on the Plus
if it's against who they got left. We're not playing

(39:35):
the Plus against Oregon State. We're not playing in the
plus against h Texas Tech or Oklahoma State. We just
plus against s f An and Rice because they're pluses.
And by the way, I love the Plus. I do
games in the plus. Okay, plus is in mean, it's fine.
It happens Texas and Sam Houston is on ESPN plus.

(39:56):
You guys used to put games in the Longhown Network,
and nobody had that channel, so back a lot of
people had. Nobody watched it though. Oh man, what a
horrible blade on the program. They were so big they
got their own freaking channel from Disney. Yeah, that's the
reason why Disney's laying people off at the right. Except
for Steven A. He's doing all right, He's doing okay.
Ten fifty seven, let's get to the second hour of
the show. Duenna Passo one's little baseball chatter. We'll get

(40:18):
to that. We also have got feelings in one half
hour here on Sports Talk Sevenati all right, eleven on
one on Sports Talk seven ninety your stros are three
games in front of the Seattle Mariner's probably Ross had
the tenth any show on the Labor Day. I had
one phone call. Is that an diamond against me? Yeah? Okay,

(40:40):
just one double check. Okay, so they had a loss
that only had one called as well. You were bragging
about how you get the most. I do get the most. Yeah, proudy,
you do great, matt Thank you. We're all proud of you.
You should be should be jealous of my accomplishments for you, Matthew.
That's what I like to hear. I want more of this,
none of this, hate, more love seven one three two

(41:01):
one two five seven nine zero seven one three two
one two five seven Nay Astros and the Yankees. Uh,
Louis Garcia, we'll talk to this with the manager in
about ninety minutes from now. Why didn't Lance McCullers go
out there and say, you know what effort I'm gonna be.
I'm gonna do what Louis Garcia can do. I'm gonna
go out there and just get to throw strikes and
get people out. It's not that easy, man, It is

(41:23):
not that easy. But we've we we have soft pedaled
guys coming back from injuries, and Louis car says like, yeah,
I gave up two home runs, suck it. I still
win six innings. I didn't walk anybody. I gave you
eighty five pitches or whatever it was. And I got
you good. When he wasn't giving up home runs, he
was very good. Yeah, And well Lance mccullor's juniors a

(41:44):
bit of a struggle. Yeah. The bullpen thing over the
weekend was not the great experiment. Yeah, I'll be having
a Lance mccullor's. I got fillling coming up at the
bottom of the hour. Oh no, I don't think I'm
gonna be giving anything breaking us wise, it's getting a
blister coming back. Wouldn't it said that just asking? I mean,

(42:07):
it's within the realm of possibilities, right it is. I
would say seven one three, two one two five seven
dwain l passo eleven o three man now passo U tip, Yes, sir,
that's where it's.

Speaker 5 (42:20):
Sorry.

Speaker 1 (42:20):
Sorry about your miners all the weekend.

Speaker 8 (42:23):
I'm telling you they got cremated.

Speaker 9 (42:26):
But the question I got for you, gentlemen, is, Okay,
the Astros gotta go three against the Yankees, and then
next they play the Rangers, and then after that the Mariners.
Now I got another question, but between those three teams,
three three teams, how many do you believe they got

(42:49):
to win? Continue to stay in first place?

Speaker 1 (42:53):
I couldn't take you. I can't give you that answer, Dwayne,
There's no way because again, it all depends on how
the Astro is doing and how how depends on what
the team's behind them. Do I mean that's how baseball works. Yeah,
it's just there's too many games, Granny, we're down with
the last month. But look, the Astros were pedestrian against
Anaheimer's this weekend and they still gained the game on

(43:14):
the Mariner. So it depends on what the Mariners. The
Mariners can't win on the road, they just can't, and
the Astros have got to take advantage of that.

Speaker 8 (43:21):
Are they going to play in Texas?

Speaker 9 (43:23):
Are they playing at home?

Speaker 1 (43:24):
Both? There's six games of that with the Rangers left,
three and Arlington and three in Houston.

Speaker 9 (43:31):
Okay, now the second question I got. I don't know
if you can answer this one, but Toronto has the tiebreaker. Now,
the Yankees got to play the Astros, then they got
to go to Toronto, and then they got to go
to Boston. Now do you think that the Yankees or
Boston have a chance to overtake Toronto.

Speaker 1 (43:53):
They're both two and a half games back, so yes,
they have a chance. Yeah, of course, yeah, they have
a chance.

Speaker 8 (43:57):
Okay, yeah, that's it, and I appreciate.

Speaker 1 (44:01):
It, thank you, Yeah, this is thank you appreciate it.
Though these are these are these are pennant races. Of course, everybody.
Teams have a change. Everything is the percentage. What that
percentage is? Who knows? Right now? Astros three up in
the Mariners. But the Mariners do have you want you
you might not want to hear ahead, do let's hear it.

(44:23):
They have the twenty fifth out of thirty strongest schedule
remaining Astros thirteenth. Yeah, because you've got Yankees, and you've
got Mariners, and you've got six of the Rangers who
are now hot. That schedule strength fluctuates because the Rangers
have been playing excellent baseball, they've been playing better. But
also Seattle still got three left with the Rockies, four

(44:46):
with the Angels. I mean they're playing the Braves and
the Cardinals, who aren't very good. So yeah, they have
a soccer schedule down the stretch. They have uh sixty,
they've played six the eight home games and they have
played seventy road games. Not that this should matter, but
Seattle is six games under five hundred and don't even

(45:08):
look competitive at times on a road. They do have
more home games and road games. The Astros have played
seventy two home games, they have nine left. They have
thirteen road games left to go. But hell, I can't
figure this. I can't figure this team out. You beat
up on the Phillies, you beat up on the Cubs,
you beat up on the Dodgers. You have success again

(45:33):
two miles that they have been the Yankees, the Reds,
and you just you split with the Anaheimer's and you
know in Colorado give y'all a little bit of a
mess too. Well, they won the series, but they did
four the Oriels before that. I will just tell you,
I just don't think they're very good right now. I
just I think they are good, not great. By the

(45:57):
way the Astros are playing six hundred baseball in their
last ten games, it doesn't feel like they have the
ability to be great. But things have to continue to
fall in place. You've gotten flashes from Christian Walker, inter
Diez or this lineup putting everything together. But then also
you've had the six games of runners in scoring position
was that you had before yesterday? And that is the

(46:19):
nature of baseball. And then when you add it all
up at the end of the season and they've had
all these injuries and all that type of stuff. They
can be good, but I just don't think they're to
the elite level of where they were a few years ago.
And I mean, that's just the reality of it. Unless
some things start to happen and you're running out of time.
We are now into September. This is no longer a marathon.

(46:39):
It's a sprint. Yeah, it was down the stretch we
come and I do have questions long term about the
bullpen come playoff time, and this lineup being consistent. And
of course this starting pitching now good thing. You got
encouraging start from Luis Garcia, spent rig Getty and Christian
Javier and then you add into the mix Hunter Brown

(47:00):
and fromber Valdez and we know what they're capable of.
You're in a pretty good spot there, and the Mariners
don't seem to want to pull away that that has
been a godsend. I mean, if you just look at
their lineup card and their starting rotation, you ask yourself,
how are they not five games ahead of the actual
And the reality is the Rangers have won nine of ten,
They've won six in a row, they're the best playing

(47:21):
or they're playing in the division and they're a game
and a half out of that third wild card. It
could be there could be a chance, if there is
a chance, we could see a Texas Houston wild card series.
I would not want to see that. De gram Vivaldi
is the one two punch that can tangle with with
Valdez and yes, Brown, Brown and Valdez, however you want

(47:44):
to do it. But the starting pitching has been, especially
in this series against the Rockies, even on the offense
was largely vacant. Arraghetti was good, Javier was good fromber
was back to fromber form. And then Luis Garcia. I
mean not that I expected that every single time I'm out,
but he well exceeded my expectations. Six innings, low pitch count,

(48:07):
quality startles first go around. Yeah, we eve didn't talked
about Hovier really. Yeah, because over the weekend not allowing
a hit and fight and again the Astros just well
when they go on an offensive struggle, it's they're getting
guys on base, but their runners in scoring position over
the weekend, except for yesterday, was terrible. Yesterday bounce back,

(48:29):
I have I have faith he think coaches are going
to come through tonight. Will the hitting coaches will their
way to an Astros series win over the Yankees? I
hope so seven one three two one two five seven
ninety seven one three two one two five seven nine zero.
Texans are off today, they'll be on the practice fil
We are officially in game week mode. I took part
in the fantasy draft yesterday. I'm not pleased with my results. Well,

(48:52):
let me look at the roster. Don't do it. Let
me do your roster evaluation tomorrow. We're playing in week one.
By the way, ESPN gave me a B, but I
think they gave everybody a B.

Speaker 5 (48:59):
Do not.

Speaker 1 (49:00):
Yeah, honestly, I don't have no clue you didn't get
right away. I don't look at draft grades. No, they
emailed it to me. They didn't. I didn't even ask
for it. Yeah, I don't look at it. I didn't
see it. I can go look it up. I did not,
but I don't. I did not pick a quarterback until
the eighth round. I feel better when I get a
bad grade, so I'm not worried about it. Yeah, quarterback
Athron is great. Yeah, I went heavy while running back

(49:23):
and wide receiver, and then I went to a tight end.
I got Travis Kelcey. I'm up in all of the
you can work out, especially with the first six weeks
when Rushi Rice is on ice mm hm, and you
know he's he's got to make his money, he's got
he's got a wedding to pay for. I got Rashi
Rice on my bench. When he comes back, my team's

(49:44):
gonna be pretty stout, feeling good. But will you be
too far behind? As long as I go three and
three first six weeks, then I got a Then I
got a super squad. Okay, it's a gamble. It makes
you the savvy general manager that you are. Let's go
to Midtown and talk to vinn So the Matt Thomas Show. Ross, Hi, Vince, Hey,
how you guys doing well?

Speaker 7 (50:05):
Good?

Speaker 1 (50:06):
Good?

Speaker 8 (50:06):
Hey.

Speaker 4 (50:08):
I know that Straw has been getting a lot of criticism,
you know here lately, especially honestly, I think he's done
a great job concerning all the stuff that the Astros
have been through with injuries and just holding it together.

Speaker 1 (50:21):
Uh.

Speaker 4 (50:21):
But at this point in time, he doesn't need to
be resting any of the he needs to be putting
his best squad out there every day. No more rest
for Altuve any of those guys. Just what do you
all think about that?

Speaker 1 (50:34):
Yeah, we'll see what happens. Uh, well, yeah, that's fine,
we're gonna cut. We're in a combo. Rest is a
relative term. Jornion is getting rest because they don't want
that hand on getting inflammated, inflammation, inflammation inflamed. So if
you see him out and as long as they're being
honest with you, it's they're saying they're just trying to

(50:55):
make sure that he doesn't uh wind up being regressing
it back into what he was at miss and miss
a Hunter games. Yeah, and we have to stop thinking
about this, folks as if it's the nineteen seventies and
the manager is making all decisions. They are collaborating. Joe
Spot is talking to the players, he's talking to the trainers.
They have plans. They have done this four years. I'm

(51:19):
trying to stay callback. They've done this for years where
we talked about this with Dusty Baker A J. Hinch.
Why is he giving this guy a day off? Because
they plan it. They have data on these players and
how fast they're running and all this other stuff. They
look at guys and when they need a rest in
a day off, they give it to them. I understand
it is down the stretch and all that type of stuff,

(51:39):
and it is a difficult line to tow figuring out
putting your best foot forward and trying to win a
game and also being fresh in October. But if you
look at the results for the Astros over the last
ten years, when this whole time they've been giving these
days off, it's allowed them to be fresher in October,
and that's what they are trying to do. So when

(52:01):
they give these guys these days off, obviously it's difficult
and it hurts the lineup when you're on or al
Tuo Vey or whatever gets these days off, But it's
them continuing to try to play the long game. And
I understand you can go out there and try to
win every single game, but if everybody's tired, you're not
gonna go anywhere in the playoffs. So it's a tough
balance for the Astros to try to do. But it's collaborative.
It's not all. It's not all. Joe A Spot is saying,

(52:23):
all right, you're sitting down today. They work with the trainers,
they work with the players, they work with everyone and
they try to figure out the best plan for everyone individually.
Ill And one more thing. The Astros' last off day
was the twenty fifth of August. They don't get an
off day until September the eighth. There's somebody that's gonna
get an off day between now and the end of
the week. I'm just telling you, I don't know who

(52:43):
it's going to be, but it's gonna be somebody. Yeah,
I would hope that you would not go, what in
the world do these pansies needed today off for? That's
a stretch of five to six, ten, thirteen straight games.
Guys just don't play thirteen anymore, and don't they don't.
And that's just the Astros. It's every team every day.
If everybody else was playing everyone one's sixty two, the

(53:06):
Astros would actually be an advantage because their players would
be well more well rested. So everybody's resting their players more.
I mean, it's just it's the nature of the beast.
But you will probably see it less depending on how
tight the race gets down the stretch. Now, I'll say this,
they have three days off between September eighth and the
end of the season, so you can time it properly. Yes,

(53:26):
they have the eighth off, the eighteenth off in the
twenty second. The DH would be their friend to so
many players, but you got a lot of guys fighting
for that DH spot, and frankly, Ramon Urias playing second
base from a defensive perspective helps you more so than
jose al Tuove defending second base. But what, I'm sorry,
I didn't know the native all these out for the year. Well,

(53:48):
I hate to hear that. That must have happened when
I was a vacation. Sorry. I don't pay attention to
the Rangers except boothing them when they when they come
to the play the Astros point being three off days
left to go the rest of the year, plus there's
only one DH spot. They're gonna do their best. Not
everybody can play the rest of the way. So just
I would say this, I know it's hard for Bill
to believe this, but trust the trust the process they're

(54:13):
they're That team is full of players that want to
play every day. I've never heard of a team and
say I's only playing twice a week. They all want
to play, they all want to win the division, they
all want to go to the playoffs. There's money for
them and that there's prestige in a chance for a
world series eleven fifteen on Sports Talk seven ninety seven
one three two one two five seven nine zero seven
one three two one two five seven Hunty the Boy

(54:34):
Jordan Hudson. Bill's girl is uh.

Speaker 5 (54:39):
S.

Speaker 1 (54:40):
I wouldn't be checking out social media. Granted, I don't
think she's overly concerned about it, but you're twenty four,
so on my guess as you are concerned about it,
because that's twenty four year olds concern themselves with forty
nine year age difference. Hmmm, is this true? Is this
her on the sideline? Is this in the middle of

(55:01):
the game. That could be ai. By the way everything is,
you can always go to the it might be ask
I'm asking. I don't know. I couldn't even care to comment,
but I as much as he's whipped by her, there's
no way he lets her on the field. Or I

(55:22):
am notuncing to show me the photo. Can you show
it to me. It's a video and it looks now
maybe this is pregame. Maybe this is pregame. Oh, there's
no chance, no chance, she's that close. There is somebody walking,
She's she's got a headset in a play sheet. Okay,
I'm kidding about that part. She's doing the coaching interview

(55:44):
at halftime. No, she don't, Cad, I'm kidding about that.
She's with him, is watching him like Cow, She's She's
the Hannah to Cow. Questions are asked to Belichick and
unless it goes past Hudson, just like questions are asked
to cal doesn't answer a question without Hannah going you
can answer that. You can't answer that. I'll tell you though,

(56:09):
Ross If I'm with somebody forty nine years younger than
me and hot like Jordan is, you have to play
by her rules. Okay, apparently this pregame thankful she's wearing
sneakskin pants. Magine gonna spend all that money. And they
were a celebrity that Michael Jordan was in the building yesterday,

(56:30):
Me Hamm was in the building yesterday, Taylor, Lawrence, Taylor,
I mean, all these big time UNC alums and they
got their ass kicked for three hours on national television.
It was It's hilarious and TCUs no juggernaut. Hell, we
beat him last year. Well, maybe they're better this year, Matt.

(56:51):
Clearly they're improved. Well, the portal helps portal didn't hurt.
I'm telling you this portal. You gotta first of all,
do not do not buy yours is of your favorite
player because they will be gone more times than not.
And secondly, let's start. Arch is gonna be back next year?
I told you maybe maybe after that performance. No, let
me ask you, this is every time Texas going to lose,

(57:13):
Is it always going to be as much Sark's faulted
as Archer's fault because man Sark was wearing it getting
worn out this weekend? Uh, I don't know. I would
say the biggest reason they lost is Ohio State is
really good and they were on the road and they
they got whipped up front. They had four new offensive
linemen and it looked like it running game worked though,

(57:34):
it was fine, but it's not like they ran for
four yards on them. One hundred thirty seven carries for
one hundred and sixty six yards is not you know,
But why didn't Arch star to a wide receiver in
the first half? I mean, was he just checking down
every single opportunity? Coad didn't seem like it seems by
design with Sark they wanted to do some quick one

(57:55):
reads and and well a couple of those. Arch Manning
was inaccurate to start. He missed a couple of very
very easy elementary throws early on. Do you know part
of what is talked about with him is that he
has this calm demeanor. He's been there and done there.
Did you think he was too laid back? Is that
such a thing? I guess it could be, but I
don't I don't know. I can't really answer that question

(58:17):
unless I'm in the in the huddles, yeah, which I
was not. Was there a sense of I mean, he
did hit that one throw in the second half that
was a forty yard pass I think is what it was.
That was big throws in the second half. That fourth
and three throw to the right side should have been
caught for a touchdown. So I mean, I thought he
looked a lot better in the second half. And again,
you're on the road going against I mean on the
road against the defending national champions in week one. So

(58:40):
I'm saying, if you're a good football team, I respect you.
I respect the fact that you want to play somebody
on an opening weekend game and get the all that
national attention. But I wouldn't do it I would say, Yeah,
give me Nevada versus Penn State, give me New Mexico
versus Michigan every single time. That's what I want. Yeah,
concern is a little heightened, but I'm not going to
say I'm like I'm you know, saying go ahead and

(59:04):
not put them out because here's the reality. You're gonna
be three and one going to Florida. Your next real
test to see what Arch has in his system is
going to be in Gainesville at Florida Fields next your dad.
Exactly one hundred thousand screaming fans of the swamp here
we go. But hey, that's plage football, big time college football.
There's no SFAs on the schedule. None. We're done with

(59:26):
that too. We have to jugging out Rice ouls beat
buy you bucketing? What's up? I want to say, you
of h by at least two touchdowns? Many more? Oh look,
last buy you bucket game for a long time?

Speaker 5 (59:46):
Is it?

Speaker 1 (59:46):
Why? Because anymore? Why not? Rice wants a check. They
wanna go get paid by I go get somebody. Do
you know the Rice? You of h And this is
gonna be twelve and a half. Okay, what's going on
a little bit? Then I think then. I thought it
was at least a double digital. It looks like it
opened fourteen and a half. I don't need no damn

(01:00:09):
sneaky cover. I need a full throttle cover.

Speaker 7 (01:00:14):
To me.

Speaker 1 (01:00:14):
Uh, Rice is nothing for me and I I love you,
H does it isn't who is U of H's biggest way?
You don't have a rival? Sorry, no, it's fine. It
is what it is. We were no figure. I mean,
we're gonna We're gonna go to Rice name. It will
be six thousand, will be six thousand people. You're just

(01:00:35):
so good. You've got no rivals. No one could possibly
ri I wasn't gonna spin it that way, but it
sounds pretty good.

Speaker 8 (01:00:42):
It does.

Speaker 1 (01:00:44):
This next half hour on the radio show is where
you get to come in and make your predictions and
if you would like to make predictions about anything sports related,
whether it be about the Astros week against the Yankees,
whether it be about the Texans week one game against
the Los Angeles Rams, Rossi and I will by we're
making our predictions for the season on Friday. We will

(01:01:04):
not do week to week picks because, frankly, do you
really care what our week to week picks are?

Speaker 5 (01:01:08):
No?

Speaker 1 (01:01:08):
You don't I like to. It's when you get them wrong.
It's a segment filler that sounds stupid. Okay, Oh, I
love the Giants MINEUS nine and a half against the Commander.
All thanks, because I know you've done a deep dive
on that. Pick segments are lazy. Oh well, I got
some picks coming up for you about one fifteen. I'll
check out yours code spotlight on DraftKings pick six. Are

(01:01:31):
you done for now? Seven one three two one two
five seven ninety seven one three two one two five
seven ninety If you have sports predictions Texans game U
of h Rice, UH Aggie's Utah State. There's a battle
of Baggies, by the way, the UTAs data also the Aggies,
UH Baseball anything sports prediction wise, we want to hear

(01:01:53):
from you right now seven one three two one two
five seven ninety.

Speaker 10 (01:01:56):
Gut feelings are next. This is there gut feeling on
the Matt Thomas Show, eleven.

Speaker 1 (01:02:09):
Thirty two Sports Talk seven ninety. It is time for
some gut feelings and we will do that with you
at seven one three now two one two five seven now.
Two weeks ago you were gone, yes, so we can
go off of the gut feelings of two weeks ago.
Did you you don't have the ones from last week? No,
Jonathan wrote him down. Do you remember what you said?

Speaker 6 (01:02:28):
No?

Speaker 1 (01:02:28):
Oh, I remember the Astros going six and four in
this ten game Homestand how are they doing so far?
They are five and three? Oh no, no, it can't
be right. I can't be right. Uh, two, three, four
and three? Yes, put with the Angels in two? So okay,
the Yankees. You're good. I'm pacing, yeah, but I want
him to go six in the pace. Why not? I

(01:02:49):
want him to go seven and three. But I was like,
I got the realism. He said six and four. I
haven't been good enough.

Speaker 7 (01:02:55):
I know.

Speaker 1 (01:02:55):
That's all. That's why I want to hit, all right,
So let's go back to two weeks How we do
two weeks ago? Two weeks ago? Oh, you said the
Astros and score at least three ear and runs against
Tyrek Scouble. That's an l correct. You said they lead
at least three games over the Mariners after the Angel Series.
I don't think they did. That was not this last
Angel series the one before that? But whatever, No, no, no,

(01:03:16):
one Angel series. I'm right. I actually got that right.
They don't play the Angels until the end of the year,
so I'm win. Thank you, You're welcome. Yeah, yeah, no, no,
that's that's no. They have they have, they've had. They
had two serious left of the Angels. One was this
past weekend and one was the last weekend of the season.
I said, the Angel series three games like, oh yeah, yeah,

(01:03:37):
I got a feelings. That's right. Even though uh, our
producer in here is doing the doing the the dance
whatever that was, I didn't see it showing that dance again.
Look at that having a stroke. It's a nervous twitch
or something. Yeah, all right, so it's a gut feeling.
Hits on one for two, continue on, hold on, I

(01:03:58):
lost the document, okay, and that's all I wrote down
for you. Right, what do you got, I said, HEYESU
Sanchez would have get hit that night. I don't think
he did. That was when he was on his big
O for correct, I said Christian Kirk over fifty receptions
and six four hundred and forty nine yards in the season.
I say it's going to be a hit, I said
ord On back in the lineup Tuesday versus the Rockies,
and he was, I said, Dub yeap. I said they
would lose to the Tigers in the school versus Brown matchup.

(01:04:19):
That was a correct answer, but I also said three
to one. I don't think I got the score right. Nope. Oh,
I said Hunter Brown would throw seven innings at one
run ball. He threw six innings of shutouts. That is
a loss. It's close, though, close, but no cigar, no cigar,
but was close. And let's see.

Speaker 4 (01:04:35):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (01:04:36):
Jonathan said that the Astro would score twenty five runs
in five games.

Speaker 4 (01:04:39):
That did not.

Speaker 1 (01:04:39):
I'm sure that didn't. Man take him twenty five games
to score twenty five runs. Sadly, they're working on it.
And that was from two weeks ago, folks. And uh,
at this point, we have no idea what he did
last week because he didn't say the file. So yeah,
it is what it is. I didn't do any so
that's what's important. Sorry of the matter. Seven one three
two one two five seven hoey. Frank is our producer.

(01:05:00):
He's he's chumping the but he's got his microhan his
mouth in the microphone. He wants something so bad. But
do you do look at you? You'reading off first, all right,
So Frankie, explain who you are for like twelve seconds?
For twelve seconds? How long you're working here, Frankie, I've
been working here for about four months. Yeah, and I
didn't know your name until about nine thirty this morning,

(01:05:21):
that's right? Yeah?

Speaker 11 (01:05:22):
Right?

Speaker 1 (01:05:23):
Next? You went to what school? Went to? Ut? Did
you get a degree? I did? All right?

Speaker 6 (01:05:28):
Well?

Speaker 1 (01:05:28):
Oh what was your major film?

Speaker 6 (01:05:30):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (01:05:31):
Really? I thought it was chemistry? No, No, not RF
I RT Do you even call it RTF anymore? Yes?
They did, okay, mag Mo day man, and they called
it RTF? Is that in the Moody school? Yeah? What's okay?
Try to communicate?

Speaker 8 (01:05:47):
All right?

Speaker 1 (01:05:47):
So what do you want to be in your life? Oh? Man?
Where you want to be in twenty year six and
twenty years? And I know what you're making now? And
do we get we got to step up the laspiration
ladder there for my friend? I know you uber? And
at night? Or was are you hashtag where I call
you door dash more mash Yeah? I did a little
bit of that last year. Retired from that a little bit.

(01:06:09):
All right, It seems fine, okay, So what is your
life goal? What do you want to be? Man? You
want to be a filmmaker? That would that would be amazing. Hey,
you need to cast anybody in your films. Do you
want to do a midday radio show? Hey, that sounds
pretty good. Get out? How'd you How would you rate
your sports knowledge? One to ten? It ain't one? Okay?
Is it a six? Oh? Is way way way low?

(01:06:31):
Oh you have a low sports knowledge, although this ought
to be a great segment. Then all right, Uh what's
your pop culture knowledge? It's higher? Maybe seven? Okay? Did
you go to see the weekend? This weekend? Not this weekend?

Speaker 5 (01:06:45):
No?

Speaker 1 (01:06:45):
Uh no, but I like I like the guy's hair. Okay,
my daughter went Sunday. You went Sunday to Sunday? Yes.
How did you get those tickets?

Speaker 8 (01:06:52):
Brough?

Speaker 1 (01:06:52):
You had some good seats listening your business. I paid
for them. Not America's guests like you. They call you
mister freebie. They called me mister hard earned and has
benefits freeby Thomas, hands out, Thomas Thomas, all right, John Jonathan,
all right, Frank, you get one sports prediction. Just name
it right now? Okay, go ahead, yours? Oh? One sports?

(01:07:15):
Oh prediction?

Speaker 8 (01:07:17):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (01:07:17):
Anything? All right?

Speaker 7 (01:07:19):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (01:07:21):
Five touchdowns? Ut? Next game? Why we go? I would
hope minimum is that in the first half, or is
that in the entire game we're keeping it a little broad. Okay,
hold on, I got to make a new column on this, h.

Speaker 5 (01:07:37):
On this.

Speaker 1 (01:07:37):
Let's see, we got David Artists, David Baker, I could
probably delete that column. Producers, and we had in the
history of this show, Jesus full time, part time. I
got a Noah column. I got a Joe George column.
Hold on, Like, we have a guy named Jacob be Calm,
Brendan Riley we used to have on this show. How's
he doing Chicago? Yeah, I mean I wish him the best.

(01:07:58):
We went the Grand Rapids. I thought it takes terrific
to did you get laid off in Grand Rapids or something?
So yeah, it's fine. I mean it's fine for him.
I'm sure he's bounced back. Trey Campbell, call him. I
got a I got a rykl Ronner call him. Hold On,
I got a Frankie Calum. Now, hen me write this down.
All right, So he's got ut scoring at least five
touchdowns in the game against Santose. Sounds beautiful. San Jose's like,

(01:08:19):
I don't care, just hand us a check on the
way out, exactly, all right, Um, Rossie I'm gonna I'm
gonna put you on the spot. Oh go ahead, Texans, Rams,
who do you like of Texans? What do you mean?
Let's like it's it's done a terrible Texans? Uh twenty

(01:08:39):
two to twenty two to nineteen. I see, here's the thing.
I don't know how Matt Stafford's back is all right? Fine?
I lied twenty three, twenty three to twenty. I know
he's gonna be on his back when Will Anderson Junior
and d'anil Hunter getting into the backfield. Baby, whoa. Now
we'll see Jay Straubian is back this week. Now, Jared

(01:09:02):
Versus gonna say hello a couple of times Arianta Ersrie.
What a debut for him going against that defensive Welcome
to the league. Wo m Stafford's Stafford's like forty percent.
I don't care what the Rams are telling me. I

(01:09:22):
got another one for you. I'm gonna go ahead and
say it. Texans win in a very low scoring game
nineteen sixteen something like that. This one's going to be
off your board. Please touchdown receiving Dalton Schultz. Hmmm. Now,

(01:09:45):
if you went to a local casino, I get some
odds on you have some good odds on that. I mean,
you wouldn't you wouldn't be able to retire, but you'd
be able to get some good odds on that. You
heard it here. First, I will just throw another name
at you, just to throw another name at you. Okay,
touchdown Christian Kirk. Ooh, I like that. Okay, nineteen sixteen

(01:10:09):
Kimi Fairbairn four field goals and a Christian Kirk touchdown. Boom,
there it is, nineteen sixteen, nineteen to sixteen. Okay, yeah,
take the under, by the way, take the k Kymie
fairbar over. It feels like every game that's say that's right,
as long as he's accurate. All right, If you've got
a gut feeling, let us know not. We're just gonna
turn the station off. Seven one, three to two to one.

(01:10:29):
You don't want that, you don't want to me. You
know what your options are at this time of the day.
Oh my god. Oh by the way, Astros win the
series versus the Yankees, agreed? Write that down for me. Two. Okay,
Astros win the series against the Yankees, dropped two or
three in Arlington. I'll had one more to that, Sagan.

(01:10:51):
You heard me, No, I didn't Astros go three and
three in the next six games, win two or three
against the Yanks, strap two or three to the Rangers,
giving the Rangers. Give some Rangers some full optimism. I'm

(01:11:12):
feeling pretty good about the rotation. Honestly, I'm a little
I've never been worried about the rotation and the bullpen.
Long term guys are getting taxed. I never thought I
would say miss Bennet's SUSA. Yeah, I missing big time.
What's the latest on him? Hmm, Quiet, Donzo, don't say that.
I mean, that's what we're thinking. But it's not okay.

(01:11:33):
I mean a lot of that happened when I was
on vacation. I don't know. All right, here we go
seven one three two one two five seven ninety seven
one three two one two five seven nine zero. What
is in your mind? In sports opinion? You have to
have some predictions right as we live. For it's a two.
Maybe people are people still taking the day off. I
think that some people are for four day weekend, although

(01:11:54):
the the parking garage was not liked. No, come on
in here, yea, we know we don't bite. Frank you's here, you.

Speaker 7 (01:12:01):
Know what it is.

Speaker 1 (01:12:01):
You attacked movie school graduate. You know he's smart. Yeah,
he did graduate, So give him that.

Speaker 7 (01:12:07):
No.

Speaker 1 (01:12:09):
Uh, maybe maybe that maybe the way you were so
rude to Mike earlier, that call that emailed me, that
maybe people were turned off by that guy's a jackass.
I'm sorry, I'm just saying you were rude to people.
People are gonna take notice of that. How did I
become the rude one on this show?

Speaker 5 (01:12:21):
Now?

Speaker 1 (01:12:22):
Because I am they call him mister affable, tister Thomas,
and then they call me thoughtful? How they call you
freebie Thomas? You're not They call me mister paid my
dues seven one three, carrying your ass for four hours
seven one three, two one two five seven.

Speaker 12 (01:12:39):
Ninety Lunchtimer's gut feelings continue now on the Matt Thomas Show,
we have the.

Speaker 1 (01:12:49):
News at noon and Joe a spot at twelve thirty.
Here on Sports Talk seven, we have Ross's NFL rewind
at one twenty woo. It's actually going to be a
recap of our fantasy drafts. Look at the school, let
me look at the let me look at the Toros.
My two quarterbacks. If I just hang tight till Rashie
Rice comes back, I got a freaking super squad are

(01:13:13):
and he's gonna pull his hamstring in the first week. Okay,
jamiir Now see you took Gibbs after I took Barkley.
I was a coin toss for me. Between Gibbs and Barkley.

Speaker 6 (01:13:23):
Got you.

Speaker 1 (01:13:25):
A chan. I like that pick Higgins. You took Higgins
right after I took somebody. Huh McBride. I was between
the Kyler Murray and Caleb Williams of my two quarterbacks.
I don't mind the value got on Garrett Wilson, Kelsey
will see save Flowers and the flex. Ye, we'll see.
I do want you to send out your preseason prognostications
because I want I want clan to get mad at you.

(01:13:47):
See last time I did that, I made fun of
Dan Matthews for taking three tight ends. I was questioning
everybody's team. I just don't want to do that anymore. Oh,
I want you to do it.

Speaker 9 (01:13:57):
No.

Speaker 1 (01:13:59):
I like keeping the league where it is. Oh, I
see what you're doing that seems fair to the phones.
We go Brian at eleven forty nine. Brian, what's in
your gut this week?

Speaker 13 (01:14:10):
A couple of things. I agree. I think the Seconds
win twenty seventeen, twenty sixteen. I'm gonna go touchdown, Nick Shop.
I think they're gonna get close enough to where he
can get one under five yards and he'll score it.
I think he'll get in the get in the end zone.
I think we get a good I think we get
a quality start from good Promber tonight and get a

(01:14:32):
win and a prediction. I hope to hit on within
one calendar year from today the Sports the Sports MP
Show with Ross, sometimes with mt sometimes with Ross, sometimes
without either. We'll be on Space City Home Network.

Speaker 7 (01:14:49):
You know what.

Speaker 1 (01:14:50):
Thank you Brian very much. I honestly, and this is
notice I love the Space City people more than you know.
I don't want it because we can't do some of
the things on the show that we'd like to do
because of music license music LICENSEFF. We have to be
on a more strict clock, which we know. Matt Thomas, Well,

(01:15:11):
let me tell you if the boys can do in
the afternoon, we can do it our side. I know
we can do it. We can, we can do it,
I know, but we have to there.

Speaker 5 (01:15:17):
They have.

Speaker 1 (01:15:18):
They have some parameters that I just don't like. And
it's not anybody's fault. It is you can't have as much,
you can't go off script as much. How about put
it that way? Yeah, it would be a significantly more
sports to your show. And it we will and Ross
would not be able to work Blue And that's not true.
They're gonna go They're gonna put muzzle on me, are they.

(01:15:41):
I'd I'd have to wash my hair more often put
on better clothes, man, But I like wearing sweatpants and
this will all over your half your shirts? Is this
than it looks? Ben looks that way? Oh? The here's one.
You're here. Let's go to uh toothpaste Grayson on seven
on it? Grayson? Which in your gut?

Speaker 8 (01:16:00):
All right?

Speaker 11 (01:16:01):
Well, I think the Astros can go five and one
in their next six against the Yankees and the Rangers.

Speaker 13 (01:16:06):
Wow.

Speaker 1 (01:16:07):
I like the optimism.

Speaker 11 (01:16:08):
Yeah, and I think that the Texans are gonna win
by two touchdowns because I don't think uh Shaffer is
gonna play well.

Speaker 1 (01:16:16):
He's he is supposed to play, so unless he gets
hurt in the next couple of days, he's practicing, right, Yeah, don't.

Speaker 3 (01:16:22):
I don't think play all right, that's.

Speaker 1 (01:16:24):
His good feeling, Matt. Okay, you can't tell a man
what's in his gut. Uh, yeah, I can't. When the
injury reports is he's healthy, I can actually tell him
it's in his gut. If you want to say win's
by two touchdowns, I'm okay with that. But when you can't,
when you're telling me a player is not going to play,
when the rams are telling you just the opposite, that's
not a good feel. That's his stupidity. But I love you, though, Grace.

Speaker 11 (01:16:42):
That back to that back though.

Speaker 1 (01:16:43):
Come on, all right, hey you know what he Grace.
How about this? How about this? You have a gut
feeling that Will Anderson's going to crack Matthew Stafford's back
in half. That's a better gut feeling.

Speaker 7 (01:16:53):
Right.

Speaker 8 (01:16:53):
There we go, There we go.

Speaker 11 (01:16:54):
We're gett knock him out early.

Speaker 1 (01:16:56):
Yeah, that's what I'm talking about. That's a positive thing.
And I'm thinking about Thank you for the phone call.
If I was an NFL quarterback, I'd be Matthew Stafford,
big rocket, arm Ross and chubby. I mean, I wouldn't
call him chubby. Jared Lorenzen was chubby. No, he was fat.

(01:17:16):
JaMarcus Russell was chubby fat. He's just not the picture
of uh. He's had a dad body is entr NFL
line in the cover of Men's Health, but neither what
Eli Manning or Tom Brady for most of his career.
He's got a dad, Bob. He's doing all right? How's
his wife doing? We like her? Who's we America? She

(01:17:41):
was playing both sides. She's like, I'm gonna find me
the guy that's gonna make me some more money. Yeah,
she said that right, she was with the other she
was with the backup quarterback. Now, yeah, she's I can't
say that phrase. I don't think. I don't think. I
see there's the things on the show. If we were
on Space any we couldn't say some things we want
to say. What are they gonna do? Is off?

Speaker 13 (01:18:00):
Yes?

Speaker 1 (01:18:01):
Oh yeah, that's exactly kick us off. Can I say
Hussey on Space City? Now? Sure you can? Now whoor?
I don't know about that slut? All right? See, I
believe the sec slot when it comes to place girlfriend,
who should? Why are you calling her that? She's she's

(01:18:22):
with one man that we know this week? Probably? Oh
my Atlanta, What do you stace to say that? When
I was like in sixth grade, all right, let's go
to uh, let's go to rich On seven, Rich was
in your gut?

Speaker 8 (01:18:40):
Hey, guys, I'm still laughing about Chubby.

Speaker 6 (01:18:43):
Uh.

Speaker 8 (01:18:44):
First of all, I want to say I love your
content on Insta at ross or at sports.

Speaker 1 (01:18:51):

Louise shoo r and gonna come back and pitch well.
And I just thank you. We're due for some luck
with one of these guys that's come back off injured. Uh,
one of our pictures and I think he'll do it.
Show I enjoyed it.

Speaker 1 (01:19:28):

(01:19:52):

I'm mister Texas. Let's not. Let's not hide that you.
I put a poll up, who's the worst candidate for
mister Texas. You are General Santa Anna and you won.
As In, you were the worst candidate because you're the
people that follow you are mean and smell bad or
on a low income more employee. So it's fine. Mm see,

(01:20:16):
this is why you're a bad candidate for mister Texas.
It was close, though, sixty one to thirty nine. I
love let me tell you, mister Texas loves all four
corners of the state. I love Galveston, I love the Valley,
I love El Paso, I love Lubbock, and I love Emmarillo. Well,
you don't like sweet tea and enchiladas, you're out, You're Oh,
I'm sorry. I don't need sugar in my diet. Oh

(01:20:38):
screw me for that. Whatever. Gross, It would be like
Keto Thomas over here. Yeah, I gotta have got some
chips over here. Mike on seven on him, Mike, what's
in your gut this week?

Speaker 3 (01:20:51):
Hey guys, I just wanted to preface moond to call
by saying I'm not crazy.

Speaker 7 (01:20:54):
Mike.

Speaker 1 (01:20:55):
That's been emailing you. Oh, thank god, he gives.

Speaker 2 (01:20:57):
Apparently he gives a people.

Speaker 1 (01:20:59):
Named Mike name.

Speaker 14 (01:21:00):
But my gut feeling is that the Astros take two
of three this weekend, uh and the Texans win by
three and score two defensive touchdowns.

Speaker 1 (01:21:14):
Touchdowns? Man, y'all optimistic. Let's go to the super Bowl, baby,
I would love it. Then we would get a red Ross, Liberty, liberty,
white man, let's go. I wouldn't hold my breath. I
hope for a divisional round loss. What i'd be holding
my breath for. Thank you Mike very much. Two or

(01:21:35):
three against the Yankees, and he's got two defensive touchdowns.

Speaker 6 (01:21:38):
I like that.

Speaker 1 (01:21:39):
I like that a lot. Jalen Petrick get one of them? Sure?
Why not sting with the other?

Speaker 8 (01:21:43):
Sure?

Speaker 1 (01:21:44):
Let the secondary do all the heavy lifting. You pitch
one can pitch back to the other. Last one, James
and garden Oaks, James, what's in your gut this week? Okay?

Speaker 6 (01:21:53):
Thank you for taking my call, Governor Thomas, He shouts
out to all of you. Look, I did fairy well
last week, you know as my as you know, the
boys did well. And this week I believe my boy's
gonna go four and two. I'm sorry about that, Governor.
They's gonna take two out of three, and this is
gonna be a judge special might he might a j

(01:22:14):
one off your boy Alexander at make believe guy over
there for your astros guys. And now my my quick
pick for the for the football is I got, I
got my team, my adopted team.

Speaker 3 (01:22:27):
The Chief they wn'na.

Speaker 6 (01:22:28):
They're gonna stomp all over them charges, the charges. They
won't be able to get any more connections after they
finished with them and finish them off. And also I'm sorry,
they say to all your boys over there and over
there in Big d the the Eagles is gonna stomp
them too. Okay, thank you, Governor Tomas for taking my car.

Speaker 1 (01:22:47):
You got it, Thanks for joining us. James write all
that down all right, Chargers aren't going to be getting connections,
but respect his attempted humor. The News at Noon is
next eleven fifty eight on Sports Talk seven ninety twelvel

(01:23:10):
three each down, our number three of the Matt Thomas
Show with Ross with Ross on Matt Jonathan with a
couple days off back with us on Thursday, and right
now we present to you as we do every day
at this time, The News at Noon, and we do
that with go ahead, the Holly Rove Houston Sports Oh

(01:23:33):
thank you, matt What a high compliment for us here
on the news at noon on Sports Talk seven Honi.
We'll start things off with a great performance from the
Astros hitting coaches. They were able to get six hits
with runners in scoring position, the last of which a
two run bomb from jose L Tuvey or maybe this

(01:23:56):
is not playing a you can't tiss that one good bye?
Oh all right, we're gonna start that over. Let's do
it too. Two and that is hammer dead till that failed.
You can't kiss that one. Good bob over the Lantrys
profit boxes a two run shot for Jose al two

(01:24:18):
B and an eight three lead for the Astros. Number
twenty four for Jose a wonderful home run off the
bat of jose L two a Astros score eight runs.
Luis Garcia with a quality start. Maybe things are turning
for this rotation. We're gonna feel a little bit more
confident fromer was good his last turn. You got Christian

(01:24:41):
Javier over the weekend not allowing a hit in six
innings and eighty five pitches, Matthew. And then yesterday Luis
Garcia six innings, pitch three earned runs on seventy nine
pitches economical as well, and a zero shot out to
the several thousand Dorks that did the waves six times
while the Astros were batting yesterday during the game. It
was close, too, right, Yeah, one run game. I'm sorry, Matt,

(01:25:04):
I'm sorry. Also over the weekend, a big week went
one of college football, unfortunately, headlined by Ohio State's home
win over the Texas Longhorns. They won fourteen to seven.
Arch Manning not good to start that game, got a
little bit better, but was on the road going against
one of the best defenses in the country. Did not

(01:25:27):
perform well. Texas A and m beat UTSA forty two
to twenty four. And then you also had Miami defeat
Notre Dame twenty seven to twenty four, and LSU beat
Clemson as well. But for some reason, I'm not saying
it that seventeen to ten LSU over Clemson the final
score there. And I'll give you a second, Matt.

Speaker 6 (01:25:53):
Over.

Speaker 1 (01:25:54):
I know you're very emotional eure upset that I didn't
mention you of HS win, but that was on Thursday. Yeah,
I should do that. Coming up in week two, Sant
Jose State right here on seven half Visit's DKR eleven
am on ABC. Why do you want any part of
that roaster? Oh? Also, Matt I did not mention that

(01:26:18):
the University of North Carolina, as the red carpet was
rolled out for Bill Belichick on ESPN on Monday Night,
got embarrassed TCU forty eight to fourteen over younc Bill
Belichick saying afterwards, we're better than what we thought we
were tonight, but we have to go out there and
show that and prove it. Nobody's going to do it

(01:26:39):
for us. We're going to have to do it ourselves,
and that's what we're going to do. If you're better
than that, you lose the game, like twenty seven to
twenty one, right, you don't lose by thirty four points
at home? Correct, that's a massive talent misevaluation. Correct, I
mean forty eight to fourteen. There's there's no sugarcoating that.

(01:27:01):
There certainly is not. I don't know, I don't know
what else you would say. What a weekend for TCU?
My goodness, I mean literally, did any anybody care anything
about the frogs? Yeah? They weren't mentioning it, mentioning the
Frogs at all. It was all about UNC and then well,
sometimes you gotta remember there's another team playing too. You
gotta go out there and do it, is Bill Belichick said,

(01:27:21):
which they did not. Yes, that's what you gotta be
thinking about this weekend for those Spartans against the Longhorns. Yes,
Bartans are flying all that way. They're not coming out
there just for blank and giggles. They want to win
that game, all right, Matt. Elsewhere in the news, Micah
Parsons never planned to sit out the season for the
Dallas Cowboys, according to his agent, Daily David Mulligeta, on

(01:27:42):
in at ESPN's First Take, said he was never going
to sit the season, said Michael loves the game too much.
He was going to play no matter what. He also said,
the most important thing for Micah was to be a cowboy.
I don't believe that. Well, he could have signed for
forty one million a year and the most important thing
was to be a cowboy. That's exactly right. Most important

(01:28:03):
thing was money. Why can't you say that The most
important thing for me is money? Me myself and I
that's Awso I'm fairly compensated. It's fine, but I'm not
going to overstretch. I know what my value is. Mike
is like, I think I can get better value somewhere else.
I will take better value over being a cowboy. Forty
one million dollars for him was not him being underpaid.

(01:28:26):
He just went, He went and tried to find the
banans and he found it. Yes, I mean, and that's okay. Yeah,
I don't know why he can't say his first priority
has been a cowboy when he turned down forty one
million dollars a year to be a cowboy, That's exactly right.
That's why I always appreciate George Springer. I'm going to
get me to check. Carrett Cale, I'm gonna get me
the check. Toronto's nice. Yeah, Toronto's love me this time

(01:28:47):
of year.

Speaker 6 (01:28:48):
All right.

Speaker 1 (01:28:48):
Elsewhere, Man, we got some college football news. We have
a spat between two head coaches, Mike Gundhy Oklaho mistake
taking shots Dan Lanning and Oregon. My Gundy talking about
the money spent, saying Oklahoma spent around seven million it
seemed the past three years. Talking about the Oregon ducts,

(01:29:11):
he said, quote, I think Oregon spent close to forty
million last year alone. So that was just one year now,
I might be off by a few million Gundhi of course,
making several comments about Oregon and the resources, talking about
money and money, money basically throughout his press conference ahead
of the clash with the Oregon Ducks this weekend. So

(01:29:33):
apparently none of that money coming from the Pickens family
at to any point in Toklahoma state. Huh No, I
guess not. Let me tell you some blanket statement. They're
all hypocrites, every one of them are. Danny makes college
football go around, period. Dan Lanning responded to the comments, quote,
if you want to be a top ten team in
college football, you better be invested in winning. We spend

(01:29:57):
to win. Some people saved to have an excuse for
why they don't. I can't speak on their situation. I
have no idea what they got in their pockets over there.
So the dude that runs Oregon nice gonna say get
your white up, son. He's eighty two years old, right,
something like that. Phil Night, he's in his mid eighties.

Speaker 7 (01:30:16):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:30:16):
Yeah, So when he dies, is he can just gonna
give all the money? No, Oregon is eighty seven. Ear
marked a lot of his money for different things. I
can't remember exactly what. Yeah, he's eighty seven. Google says,
wait in a long time how Dan Lanning says, yeah,
we're not pocket watching. We can't. We're not worried about
those poores over there. H that's the proper response from

(01:30:38):
Dan Lanning. Oh Man Kirby Smart made similar references to
Oregon's resources last year during SEC media Days. As I
told you last week, Ross, when you are spending as
much money as some of these schools are, you're either
gonna get one or two responses from the general public
that don't follow those schools. If you spend the money, well,

(01:31:00):
dull how you're supposed to win, You spend on the money,
and if you don't win and you spend all the money,
then you're really ridiculed. Like Texas Tech is in a
no win situation. Nobody you better win there because nobody
would choose to go to tex Tech. I mean, I
love text Tech, but nobody's choosing to go there over
the blue blood over the blue bloods. But now they're
in the blue blood territory because that dude, Cody Campbell

(01:31:22):
is cutting his writing checks and he's also on TV
commercial every five seconds. One more quote from Dan Lanny.
I'm sure U. T. Martin didn't have as much money
as them last week and they played, so we'll play
it out. There's some spiciness in the old college football
world calling them out for scheduling U TE Martin. Well,

(01:31:44):
how about Indiana? Like the coach show, what's the guy's name?
Kind of cranky guy Signetti or whatever? You see he's
he's scheduling nothing but pancakes. He doesn't want any any
good competition in non conference play. They've got Old Dominion
Kanessas State and Indie of State, the Sycamores. You play
a Larry Bird stadium, I believe, Well, Larry Birns State,

(01:32:11):
what does that look like? Got a rundown smack talking
your way in? Yeah, welcome to stave. No, you're not
walking into a lot. We know they had football, but
Indiana did they found out and cutting that check. I'm
matterw news at Dude. That is the news that Dude
twelve twelve on Sports Talk seven ninety. If you would
like to chime in anything we've discussed and we try

(01:32:32):
to COMPREHENDI we tried to because we appreciate that as well.
UH Manager Joe A spotted with us coming up in
about eighteen minutes here on Sports Talk seven ninety. You
may join us before that at seven one three two,
one two five seven ninety seven one three two one
two five seven nine zero to twelve nineteen on Sports
Talk seven ninety, we've NFL re wanted one twenty. What

(01:32:52):
is today's edition? To believe it or not? One fifty?
Coming up the weekend? I think so because my daughter
went with her one of her girlfriends. You went last time, huh.

Speaker 13 (01:33:06):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (01:33:07):
Two nights ago, two nights ago. How familiar were you
with the weekend? I know mostly from his first two
major albums. I didn't really listen to much of Don
FM or the one before that, which I can't remember,
but Star Boys listened to a lot, and then the
one before that. Yeah, all things about the weekend, not

(01:33:29):
like Saturn. What I'm trying to bring up his discography. Yeah,
Beauty behind the Madness, star Boy listened to After Hours.
I listened to some, and then the last two albums.
I don't want to say I'm checked out. I just
haven't gotten into him. So do you have a good time?
I had a great time?

Speaker 8 (01:33:42):
How was it?

Speaker 1 (01:33:43):
He had two energy full stadium crowds yeah, he's legit.
He had. I mean he played for two hours and
twenty minutes. Now he was, you know, taking breaks and
in between songs, he was like soaking up the crowd
and you know, working the crowd and stead talk. You're
talking able something or other people were chanting able able

(01:34:04):
tests fai Yer weekends. Yeah, the weekend works. He's working.
Never mind. Yeah, it was a great show. And by
the way, guess how many number one hits he has?
I didn't realize he had so many number one hits.
I can only name one of his songs. Is it
seven number one hits? Really? Yeah? Like on the like

(01:34:24):
the Ryan Seacrest Top forty he does on the actual Yes,
us Top forty. He's got seven number one hits. We
can got some hits. Maddie island O one. What's that done? Done?

Speaker 6 (01:34:35):
You know?

Speaker 8 (01:34:36):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (01:34:36):
Blending lights? Yeah, that's good. You've probably heard I can't
feel my face without you, I can't film my face
when Oh that's it. That's yeah, that's not bad as
a number one hit, mat Maybe I should have gone
to the concert after all. Yeah, I can't feel my
face was a number one hit. Let me pull this up, starboy.
I don't know if you're gonna know that that's not
on the bridge. You're terrible. Call my name was recent. Yeah,

(01:34:58):
blinding light was a mega. Blinding line is huge. Yeah, oh,
save your tears. Save your tears for another.

Speaker 8 (01:35:08):
To me?

Speaker 1 (01:35:09):
You know, No, I don't know that's the number one hit. Yeah,
he gets some hits. Okay, I'm gonna tell you what.
The people were showing out for the show, and the
only thing that really made me feel was old explain
by showing out. Oh there's a lot of ask me
really hmm, you asked me, and they answered, I don't

(01:35:40):
really know what to say. The ladies dressed up for
the weekend, were they okay?

Speaker 8 (01:35:44):
This is this is?

Speaker 1 (01:35:47):
Did the outfits match their weight? Oh? Not everybody?

Speaker 8 (01:35:51):
There was.

Speaker 1 (01:35:52):
There were some congruents and there was some incongruents. Okay,
let's talk some astro. Please, somebody help somebody. I don't
call abou anything. You want people who went know what
exactly what I'm talking about. I'll give you my credit card.
I we just talk to me about anything. Yeah, I uh.

(01:36:17):
Then there were you know, of course, as I know
you said, you get it. But people who just literally
the whole two hours of the show just had their
phone out, which yeah, I just yeah, I totally get it. Know,
watch put it down for five minutes at least watch
the show. Drink it in. Let's be present, folks. It's
funny because I will do a fair share of recording songs. Yeah,
and I'm glad I do it after because I was like,

(01:36:39):
oh my'm wasting my time. And then like, for instance,
I was at dinner with a friend the other day
and we were talking about the sphere, sphere, sphere, s fear,
s fear, We'll talk about the sphere in Las Vegas.
And I was showing him the videos I took up
the Eagles concert. How long were the videos? A minute? Yeah,
I'm gonna tell you. He cha checked out after ten seconds.
But I mean he's like, this is incredible. I said, yeah. No,

(01:37:01):
He's like I gotta go. He's like, oh god, no, no, no, no,
nobody wants to see the last fifteen seconds of your
your your minute long concert video. The problem isn't just
that for fifteen The problem, I said, is that some
of the songs, some of the videos that erace because
I was singing in the background. I'm a big singer.
Con did you erase them? Because I don't about the feeling, Matt,
I'm embarrassed myself. Okay. By the way, that's about as
loud as I've ever heard that stadium save for like

(01:37:23):
JJ Watt pick six against the Bengals. That that stadium
was Wow. The game. The Texans will play their first
game there a week from Sunday, a week from Monday.
Excuse me, Uh, could you tell their enhancements? What do
you mean They've been bragging about the speaker systems and
all that the speakers were a loud af I'll tell

(01:37:45):
you that it was really loud. The crowd was really loud.
I don't know. It was a good show. You know
when you go to an you go to a stadium
concert and everybody's singing the whole songs. Man, it's crazy.
It's cool. It's there's nothing like it. That's how I
was a billy. Absolutely, twenty thousand people singing piano. Man,
it was all good. Yeah, it's cool. There's this very
unique human experience that we were very privileged and lucky

(01:38:07):
to get. Yeah. So, uh you got down there. How
was your uber rides? Uh? Well, thank you? I didn't
have to uber back but I ubered there. It was
only I don't live too far. That's like under twenty bucks, right.
And there was a guy who we were talking about
sports talk radio and he heard of other stations but
not ours, but he'd never heard of our station. He

(01:38:30):
played dumb after I was like, he's like, oh yeah,
I know, yeah, I know who you are. It's like, no,
you don't. Probably heard of other people's YouTube pages before us.
That's fine. We got to work on our brand building.
Follow me on Instagram at sports RV you're gonna help.
I don't look at your dumbass barbecue. I want to
look at your sports takes. Yeah, I got sports takes
up there to barbecue takes and Carl's met cavern looks nice.

(01:38:53):
You can check it out at sports RV on Instagram.
Me I'd appreciate it, and uh some of the wonderful
plays I go with rocket victories on my Instagram at
sports empty it's pictures of arena's not that interesting. It's
pretty good when they have rockets went on there, it's
really interesting. Just about guarantee you a piece of Joe
A spot as interview will be on my Instagram later today.
Oh wait, no, I probably gotta get that done, all right.

(01:39:15):
Joe A. Spot is going to join us in a
couple of minutes. Yeah, we're going back to sports here.
That's why the guys don't listening to shows like you
guys are talking about sports. We're trying as far our show.
We're trying. We're talking to ninety percent of the time.
I'm sorry. The weekend was here in Houston, A big deal.
It was a huge deal. Oh you know, there was
not an apry. We'll we will cuss and discuss all
you want. There was not an empty seat in that stadium.
It's good for the two days, all right, Uh money, Yeah,

(01:39:38):
Astro's gonna make some of how many Yankee fans are
gonna be in the game. By the way, the next
three days it's midweek, school's in session. You would think
all of the diehard Yankee fans because they're not traveled
down here. I think it'll be I hope, think it'll
be like thirty thirty five plus today, right. I think
the crowds will be get I'm just worried about the
Yankee infiltration. Oh okay, Yankee fans. Were you worried about
fights in the stands? No, I'm just wor worried about

(01:40:00):
just hearing about a judge goes deep the roar of
the crowd. Remember when that Astros fan got his head
beat like by the Dodgers fan like a speedbag. That's
not good. It's like, we don't we do not anywhere
Astros gear and get in a fight. You better be
able to fight, because you're getting us crushed across the country.
That's true. Twelve twenty seven, Joe as spot is next
year on seven ninety, Matt and Ross very happy to

(01:40:24):
be joined now by the manager of your Houston Astros.
Nice win yesterday over the Angels. Couple that with the
Seattle Mariners losing to Tampa Bay and Houston enjoys a
three game lead opening up a three game series with
the Yankees. Skip is with us, Joe. It's Matt and Ross.
Good afternoon. Do you congratulations on the win? And I
thought I wanted you to take our audience into the

(01:40:44):
conversations you've had with Luis Garcia, and maybe not in
just the last twenty four hours, with the last couple
of years, because a lot of guys could have said,
you know what, Maron was not meant to be and
I thought some of your postgame comments kind of explained
that this was a long physical and mental grind for
him to come back to where he was and was
able to pitch for you yesterday.

Speaker 7 (01:41:04):
Yeah, And you know, during during that period, you know,
I've seen players in my experience where they start creating,
you know, these doubts and insecurities about am I able
going to be able to get back on the mound right,
especially after a few setbacks that he had throughout his recovery,
and they starts taking getting themselves and and and and

(01:41:25):
for us, for me who have known Louis for a
very long time, and knowing you know, the character of
the human and how strong mentally he is, and you know,
a man of faith, you know, it's for us to
continue to encourage them that things are going to be okay.
It's going to take some time. And and when you
see someone overcome those challenging and getting back on you know,

(01:41:47):
seeing him back pitching again, you know, it's it's special
because these guys have worked really hard to get to
the major leagues to have success of the major leagues
we have seen Louis been a really good pitcher here
for me, many many years and just to see him
accomplished what he did yesterday, it was a very special moment.

Speaker 1 (01:42:05):
You know, Joe, I don't want to give away company secrets,
but people are like, well, you know, his velocity wasn't
as good as it was pre injury. And I'm thinking, well,
my god, his arm has been in a sling for
a long period of time and maybe he'll never be
to that point. But have you been told about what
that could be or is he going to be a
guy that can tap out at ninety two? And let
me tell you, Joe, as you know, there are guys

(01:42:26):
in Major League Baseball as long as the command is good,
you can live with ninety two at the big leagues.

Speaker 7 (01:42:31):
You know, for me, this is what I tell everyone, like,
we need to give him time.

Speaker 4 (01:42:36):
It's two years. This guy hasn't pitched on a major
league mount.

Speaker 7 (01:42:40):
He has over you know, he has had setbacks. He's
coming back from a very ugly injury.

Speaker 3 (01:42:45):
Sometime he takes pictures time to.

Speaker 1 (01:42:47):
Get back to their normal, you know, Vlo and.

Speaker 7 (01:42:51):
And you know show what they show two years ago.
For me is I was as proud of the fact
that he works his tail off to get back on
the mount and through six innings, I guess a goot
lineup and we should you celebrate that the VLO that
all this stuff, we just got to give us some time.

Speaker 1 (01:43:10):
I think it's a very fair assessment. Joe spotted with
us here on Sports Talk seven ninety. You've had of
the last week's skip, a lot of guys get on
the base pass the runners in scoring position. Numbers were
just not to your level. And I'm sure the frustrations
yesterday was one off, but I think if you're going
to win this division, you got to have the numbers better.
Is an approach?

Speaker 6 (01:43:30):
Is it?

Speaker 5 (01:43:31):
Tell me?

Speaker 1 (01:43:31):
Tell me where it is. I don't even know what
possibilities are about why this team has struggled at times,
especially in the last week, with getting guys on but
not able to touch the pay station.

Speaker 8 (01:43:42):
Yeah.

Speaker 7 (01:43:42):
And you know what for me is like we are
getting we're getting the guys on. So our approach when
we're trying to get people on base, understanding our capabilities
and our strength ice individuals and as a team, we
have really good approaches, but one people get on base,
sometimes we tend to get away from who we are
as individuals and know our strength and witnesses and also

(01:44:05):
recognize what pictures are.

Speaker 1 (01:44:06):
Trying to do to us. So when we when we.

Speaker 7 (01:44:09):
Try to do a bit more of what we can
do and we try to get the big hit when
we don't really need to. We could just get what
the pictures gives us. Let the guy on deck get
the jump done. But sometimes in the moment, we want
to be we want to be in that spot. We
want to be the hero, we want to get the
big hit.

Speaker 4 (01:44:29):
And I appreciate that about the players.

Speaker 7 (01:44:31):
We want to be in the moment, and we want
our guys to have that desire to be in that spot.
But also you have to kind of control yourself, your
emotions and get pitches that you can handle, because the
pictures they recognize that, and they want to try to
get us to, you know, swing at pitches that they're
not our pitches.

Speaker 1 (01:44:49):
Astro's manager Joe A. Spotta with us here on Sports
Talk seven ninety yord On Alvarez looking pretty good at
the plate, looks like he's drawn a lot of walks,
had the home run as well. Just overall, how your
conversations when been like with him? Is he just back
to the same old Jordan or is there still a
little bit of work to be done.

Speaker 4 (01:45:06):
Yeah, you know, I think he you know, he is
physically and mentally in a good spot.

Speaker 7 (01:45:11):
I think we need to steal monitor.

Speaker 1 (01:45:13):
He's worklow.

Speaker 4 (01:45:14):
He has missed four months before returning, and.

Speaker 7 (01:45:18):
We want to make sure that we have him there
for for this, you know, for this month, and and
and and and postseason, if you know, if we get
to that point where we could play deeping to October.

Speaker 3 (01:45:30):
We want to make sure that we we take care
of his body and make sure.

Speaker 7 (01:45:34):
That we building him out, we build him up properly,
because we want to keep him from the long run.
But right now, what I've seen is that that's have
been really good. He feels good in the outfield, his
body feels good. But we got to steal monitor. He's
worklow here as we're trying to get him back and
some of the players who are also working themselves getting

(01:45:55):
back here to.

Speaker 1 (01:45:56):
Our lineup, and yeah, what is that like for you
as we go down the stretch, Because we know that
this organization has always wanted to give guys days off
so that you can make sure that they're fresh come October.
And there's been very good results in a lot of
deep October runs with that. So what is it like
for you day to day working with players and trainers
and trying to balance keeping guys fresh but also the

(01:46:17):
pressure of a division race.

Speaker 7 (01:46:19):
Yeah, you know what it's you know, our workload prior
to the game is also very important. Kind of cutting
down on the amount of early work that we do.
You know, our work in the weight room has changed,
is more like a recovery, doing some extra stretching, trying
to get these guys a little later arrival to the ballpark,

(01:46:40):
trying to get them to sleep a little bit longer,
and trying to stay home and and just try to
monitor their work well that way, you know, also giving
this guy I'm using the DH spot to kind of
you know, get these guys off their feet a bit.
So we you know, it's is a grind, but there's
ways that we can do it where we could use

(01:47:02):
our you know, giving these guys a day off here
and there, and also kind of monitoring our work. You know,
these guys, they they have a routine, making adjustments to
their pregame routine.

Speaker 4 (01:47:15):
So where we're not.

Speaker 7 (01:47:16):
But when seven o'clock starts refreshing, we know we don't
feel fatigued skip.

Speaker 1 (01:47:21):
I think being even keeled as a manager works, whether
you're talking about a game in April fifteenth, July fifteenth,
or September fifteenth, which will be coming up for you
in the next couple of weeks. You are still in
a division race, three game lead. How do you manage
the I'm still Joe Aspota, I'm still the manager. I
want to make sure the clubhouse is as normalized as possible.

(01:47:42):
But we're down to about thirty games left to go.
You're holding off two teams in division sense of urgency?
How do you how do you go through that? And
how did last year, as your first time doing that,
help you towards you think this year is September run.

Speaker 6 (01:47:55):
You know what you know?

Speaker 7 (01:47:57):
For me the experience here, the last the last year, uh,
you know, seventy years that I've been here. I've always
seen our guys just being the best towards the end.
And it's because we have done a really good job
of setting a foundation where we know and we trust
our process, our work, our players for it. You know,

(01:48:20):
they they want to see their leaders to be calm
and composed and understanding that.

Speaker 3 (01:48:24):
You know, we know the job that we need to
do right.

Speaker 7 (01:48:27):
And for me, it's preparing these guys to compete every day,
providing the information they need every day to be the
best versions of themselves, you know, pushing things back a
little bit so that you stay home and guys listen,
spend you know, spending hour or two with your family.
That really helps me when I'm around my family and
my kids, and takes your mind away from the game,

(01:48:48):
especially when you're down the stretch, because when they get here,
it's all hands on deck. They walk through those doors
and its and it's go time and and it's and
I've seen that in their eyes and in their work.
But also there has to be a balance where they
can they can relax, and I want them fresh when
they're walking here and understand that.

Speaker 1 (01:49:08):
You know, we have to all be in this together.
We all have to be all in this together.

Speaker 12 (01:49:13):
And we are.

Speaker 4 (01:49:13):
And it's a special group, it's a special clubhouse.

Speaker 7 (01:49:16):
And I'm very always, you know, working really hard to
protect what we've built here. For for the last seven
eight years, You've.

Speaker 1 (01:49:23):
Had to use a variety of starting pitchers. You've had
numerous up and down players at Triple A to here
and back and forth you've had different guys. It feels
like to me, Joe, that there are still some roster spots. Again,
I'm gonna put the car before the horse here for
you for the playoff run, with the series development and
going to the postseason, I feel like there's gonna be
competition during this time. Is that a fair assessment to

(01:49:46):
say that there are no There are some games, but
there are probably a lot more guys that we should
be thinking about what they do in September for you,
if they want to play for you in the postseason.

Speaker 5 (01:49:55):
You know what?

Speaker 7 (01:49:56):
This is the way I this is our conversation with
my players is you know, they're doing everything in their
power to get to the postseason.

Speaker 4 (01:50:03):
When we get to the postseason, we're blessed to get
to that point. We'll make those decisions.

Speaker 7 (01:50:07):
But right now is if you do your job and
you play your best, you're making a case for yourself.

Speaker 1 (01:50:14):
And that's all it matters.

Speaker 7 (01:50:16):
Playing forty days game, doing whatever it takes to win
today's game, and tomorrow will take care you know, we'll
take care of yourself.

Speaker 1 (01:50:23):
Great stuff is always good luck with the Astros and
Yankee series coming up, and look forward talking to me
to again next Tuesday. We appreciate the time as always,
Bye bye fellows, thank you, thank you, Joe appreciate. Joe
spotted with us here on Sports Talk seven, and I
want to get a little bit more into what my
last question was, ok because I do believe there are
guys fighting for spots on this roster playoff time. It's

(01:50:45):
not a we've had twenty six the whole way. Let's
go with these twenty six. I think there's going to
be some very difficult decisions coming up, and we'll go
through some of those in a minute. And you have
guys still coming back and just getting back and then
like guys like Jake Myers coming back to That's what
I'm saying. It's it's that roster construction is gonna be now.
If they get there, it could be fun, but there's

(01:51:06):
gonna be some upset folks and well, okay, that's baseball baby. Sorry.
Twelve forty three, just throwing it out there. Twelve forty
three Sports talks about right as a white person, I
can dance to this song? You can? But can you dance? Well? Yes,

(01:51:27):
jam This is his most popular song, correct, I would say,
probably biggest hit of all time. But I can't fiel
my Face with a mega hit. Okay, so that those
are his two most popular, probably, but he's got seven
number one hits. Maddie, let's you sell the man short.
But let's go to okay, just because that's all. Yeah,
I'm a consumer of life. Oh that's that. We'll put
that on your gravestone. Let's go to me. Go ahead.

(01:51:50):
How long did it take for each one of those
two songs that get played? Uh, I can't feel my
Face was first, Probably thirty minutes. I can find the
set list, and I think the Blinding Light it was
the last thirty minutes. It's really a catchy tune. There's
a white person. I would endorse it. Starboard he played
star Boy, he played early. That was a number one hit.

(01:52:12):
I feel it. Come In, Come In was one of
my favorites with that punk great song. He played so too.

Speaker 6 (01:52:18):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (01:52:19):
Probably yeah. I mean, obviously he's piping. If he fills
up a large NFL stadium. I think he did. He
might have done three shows at Jerry World. It was
either two or three. Yeah, that's crazy. Let me look
at the tour. I mean he's not playing in some
you know, he's not playing at the uh the local
casino in wichital He's not at the raffle Res South Maine. No,

(01:52:44):
he's not. He's not at that place up on the
North Side where they charge you horrific amount of money
to see bands that serve chicken fried steak for hundred
and four hours. Well, this tour has been going since
twenty twenty two. My god, he's been the road that long. No,
he's got to take some time off. Yeah, I mean,
I guess there's different leves, a Latin American leg, Australian leg. Kid. God,

(01:53:09):
I'm trying to find how many days it was Two
days at at and t good for him. Two days
of energy, all right, So let's get to the position
interesting battles starting rotation for the playoffs, and we will
be doing this for you to multiple times. Four days.
It's so fine. So that's got to be at least
three hundred thousand people. Since he made thirty five million

(01:53:32):
dollars in those four days he personally collects or the
concert says, that's how much it generates. Revenue generates for him.
He's doing okay, alright, that's the way he too for
three years. Yeah, alright, go ahead, back to base back
to baseball. I still say Hunter one two.

Speaker 8 (01:53:54):
Huh.

Speaker 1 (01:53:55):
I'm still gonna go Erighetty three right now. I mean,
we're just doing We're doing the live ratings, Matt, the
live ratings. It's Javier. It can change. But again, at
least Arrogony has given me to the sixth inning twice.
But who's been in more playoff wars he has, and
Araghenny's walk numbers are still not very good. But if

(01:54:15):
Javier adds it to it, if Garcia adds the mix,
I mean, I think there are very few Lance mccullor
j Junior fans around anymore. But there's not a spot
for him in this in the wildcard series. My colors
Island is well, it's I'm building my I'm building my canoe. Yeah,

(01:54:35):
it's wow. I'm sad. I'm really rooted for I really
wanted it to work out, but it's just not working out.
I mean, seventh inning in the bullpen in the game
the other day was good. Eighth inning, gave up the
double to Trott and he threw the ball away at
the first base and that didn't help the cause. Either. No,
I you know, I I I think he's untradeable. But

(01:54:58):
to me, if I was Lance mc colors, I'd try
to find somewhere else to play next year. I just
think if a change of scenery could keep him alive,
because it feels like to me, he's just washed here.
He's tradeable to the point where you have to send
like fifteen you'd have to cover like fifteen of the
eighteen million or if not more. I don't even know
how that would work. I don't know the whole economics

(01:55:19):
and baseball can get a decent prospect at right, you'd
have to get early anything. It'd be like a rough trade,
like we thought. We would say it's impossible to trade
Rafael Montero, But would you just send a bunch of cash? Yeah, yep.
You send him with some bad team, try to get
some a ball prospect and pray. But at the very
least you're getting salary relief, which we know Jim Crane

(01:55:41):
is very interested in getting. Let me give you another battle.
Tell me where there's a roster that has Keratini. Now,
maybe there Maybe the answer is there is a roster Caratini,
Dubon or Reus, cam Smith and Jake Myers and hayesus

(01:56:06):
Sanchez and I feel like we're one over the limit here.
I guess we'd have to go through the numbers. It
feels like you can fit them all on there. I
mean very rarely do you? But you don't need the eco.
Well is there there's limits on the rosters nowadays? Well
it's twenty six for the playoffs ya, No, but I

(01:56:28):
mean as far as picture numbers, yeah, yeah, it's half
and a half. Yeah hmmm, because let's go to the
outfield now in the only days you would have fewer
pictures early you have more. But now can you do that? Don't?
I don't. I'll have the double check. I thought I
had to be still equal to equal, but again I
could be wrong about that. It just feels like we've

(01:56:50):
got one too many position players maximum of thirteen pitchers,
so you could carry twelve in theory, and probably they'd
be the better idea because you Dubon helps you because
he's a jack of all trades, play multiple positions. How
many left handers are you going to see in the
playoffs in that first round? And if that's the case,

(01:57:10):
this hate I mean, you can't take Hatu Sanchez off
the off the roster, No, because he's hitting in theory
better than Cam Smith is. Does Cam Smith absolutely one
make the roster if you've got If you're worried about
Jordan slash Alto being your left fielder, you know what
I'm saying. I think so, I'm just talking off the

(01:57:31):
top of my head here, but it feels like there's
a little bit of a Even if he doesn't hit Fluster,
he provides you so much defensively. Cam Smith. People people
are learning not to run on him. Yeah they are, Yeah,
they are. I hope all these things we're talking about
are legitimate issues that Joe's gonna have to worry about
in about four weeks. Hey, we'll have a clear picture soon.

(01:57:58):
Hm hmmm, Yeah, I don't know. I mean Urius and
do Bond both utility guys, but urious more infield. You don't.
You don't typically carry two utility infielders now back in
the day did they do? And you can't carry two catchers,

(01:58:20):
which is that generally you have some guy at the
end of the roster you never used in the year's past.
It was, you know, Derek Fisher or Jake morrisnik was
that white guy who used to run really fast for
the astros, and I said, I don't know what what
era like five years ago? Oh help me out, Derek Fisher. No,
there was another dude. It was really fast. Oh help

(01:58:43):
me out, Houston. There was a guy that would uh
it was it was it was it the center fielder.
But they went to the the guardians. Oh you're talking
about Miles Straw.

Speaker 6 (01:58:52):
Was it?

Speaker 1 (01:58:53):
Milestraw was like the deep Straw was starting. But wasn't
he like the designated fast white guy off the bench
that would, I mean, would come in for pin. You
had some of those. Maybe that was who it was. Okay,
I'm trying to pull up guys. Yeah, he was kind
of like that. Maybe maybe I was thinking, my man,
I forgot about this guy. I remember super Jack Mayfield
Jack make you mean the governor?

Speaker 6 (01:59:14):
Uh?

Speaker 1 (01:59:14):
Some whoever called him super that's ridiculous. I mean he
was purely average, a best oh man, remember Andre scrub No,
don't no, don't do this to us. He was decent
for a while. All right, final hour of the Matt
Thamas showing Ross coming up. Stop going through Rando from
asks you for asking me for the five years ago
about Okay, Milestro, it's enterprising young man. He was quat shifty.

(01:59:37):
He got you youngeras he did, and somebody else could.
What was the other piece of that? Oh no, that's
gonna bother me. Go look up the trade while we
take this short time out back of the final hour.
Believe it or not, today it's all things on right. Yeah,
and then he punched a wall. Well, I mean yeah,
it's gonna happen to anybody. Seven one three two one

(01:59:59):
two five seven Natti's seven one three two one two
five seven nine zero Astros on the brain, college football
on the brain. And by the way, Ryan Clark with
a holatiously hot take about your favorite college quarterback sports Harve,
That's fine, they're coming. You know that, don't you look?
If he's not good enough, he's not good enough. He

(02:00:19):
absolutely got too much hype and it was overhyped. I
said this all off season. Do you know the reason
for that? I said? Why I was so good? Why
didn't he unsweet? Unseat mediocre? Quinn yours? Do you know
why we we we overtalk him because his last name,
because we don't we don't know anything about college football.
We use a collective universe, don't know college football? Well,

(02:00:42):
Chris Gordon does, but he's the one, okay, Cole Thompson does.
That's two okay, but look at them. You more of
an sl locked on sec guy or an sec and
filtered guy.

Speaker 11 (02:00:53):
Hmm.

Speaker 1 (02:00:53):
We had that debate where you were gone seven three
two one two five sevenatti two one seven ninety. It
is Matt and Ross for the final hour of the show.
All right. So I don't have much respect for you know,
I was thinking about this. I don't much respect for anybody.
Hes to Ben. I I herbs you. I don't mind

(02:01:14):
Nick Saban's cool. He's got to stop color on his hair.
It's just getting so dark now, it's ridiculous. I like
dan Olovsky is good, even if he was criticizing, Uh,
Steve's a keasying over the weekend, that's okay, good. Disagree.
So he's talking about putting the training wheels on, which
you know, so I go to the for you tap
and that's a mistake on my part, And it says

(02:01:34):
the following arch man. This is Ryan Clark. And Ryan
Clark got in trouble for something during the summertime, right,
he was gotting a beef with somebody. It was about Sanders.
I guess it was about skin color, stuffy colorism. Oh,
that's out of my realm of expertise. So I'm gonna
stay away from why I can tell you that my

(02:01:57):
my name's Paul. That's between y'all. My name's leave me alone.
Follow me on Instagram at sports mt Follow me on
Instagram at sports rv ot appreciate it if you if
you value me as a friend at sports empt, well
you know what, it will make Matt feel better, So
go ahead and follow me. Correct can feel worse. I'm
gonna tell you, folks, for sixteen Matt needs his ego

(02:02:19):
constantly stroked, so please follow him at sports Empt. Not
telling me he's spitting facts. I mean, it is what
it is, all right. So here's Ryan Clark really quick,
because everybody in their mother has this opinion about Arch.
Uh oh. Arch Manning is not a generational talent.

Speaker 4 (02:02:36):
Ooo.

Speaker 1 (02:02:37):
People place expectations upon him without any evidence. He's not
Trevor Lawrence or Caleb Williams ooh, who beat out returning
starters as freshman. Instead, Art sat behind his seventh round
pick for two years. He's a good player who will
be very good, but let him earn it. Arch has
never faced top level competition. He didn't play high school
level ball in Louisiana, nor did he compete in the

(02:02:58):
high school quarterback circuit. So it'll take time. And that's okay,
that's from Ryan Clark.

Speaker 7 (02:03:07):
Can I.

Speaker 1 (02:03:12):
He's so so hot, that's so hot, taky, It is
very Look, he could be first of all, let's say
he could be. He could be right.

Speaker 7 (02:03:21):
He could be right.

Speaker 1 (02:03:22):
He could be, but you can't make that assessment against
one game against a top five team. But when you're
on ESPN and your hashtag embrace debate in your suposal,
we're talking about this on this show. If Ryan Clark
had a measured, regular take about arch Manning in week one,
we wouldn't be talking about on this show. And I'm
not saying that you or whatever. You know what I'm
saying exactly. I'm just because I read it. Respect you.

(02:03:44):
Ryan Clark could be right as far as yeah, putting
generational talent on arch Manning. He's got a generational name,
he's taken a generational path. But there have been no doubt.
There's been five star quarterback recruits who are supposed to
be no doubt about it, and they didn't turn out
to be much of anything. I don't know. Jimmy Clawson

(02:04:05):
comes to mind quick. The biggest, no doubt about it,
five star quarterback recruit before arch Manning was Quinn yours
and he wasn't that good and he got taken in
the seventh round. So there's no guarantee of success. Everybody
in life gets their ceiling some someplace. Some people that
ceiling is Tom Brady, some people that ceiling is Quinn

(02:04:28):
yours or Jimmy Clausen or whoever. I just I don't
want anyone to judge me after I do something once. Now,
Grant he had two stars last year. Yes, he did
Louisiana Monroe in Mississippi. So slappy, okay, yeah, sorry, you

(02:04:49):
are slash on the road in the shoe. Ohio still
open up a season. To open up the season with
Steves Sarkisian keeping the training wheels, which he did, relying
on the defense, and we can talk about this is
it would I like him to kind of turn it
a little bit more loose? Yes? Do I understand a
coach on the road with one of the best defenses

(02:05:10):
in the country saying I'm going to rely on my
best unit. I also understand that I'm going to tell
you this. I'm going to assume ross not that I
have the numbers from the three sixty five Sports Dudes
or whatever the on three guys, but my assumption is
that when arch Manning was coming out of high school
and was being recruited by schools across this country, everybody

(02:05:31):
and the mother would have taken him in a heartbeat.
Am my fare on that?

Speaker 6 (02:05:34):
Yes?

Speaker 1 (02:05:35):
So is Ryan Clark telling me that one hundred and
fifty different colleges thought this guy was so bad that
we don't want him. Yeah, not true. Everybody from UTAP
to Memphis to Florida to LSU to Washington probably wanted
arch Maning as a quarterback, right. That'd be fair to say.
He had his detractors too. There were people that were

(02:05:56):
saying he was overrated and all that stuff. Let me
ask you this serious question, and I don't mean to
be rude or stereotypical, but you know we're going to
do this. Do you think part of it that these
private high school quarterbacks have a difficult time making the transition?
There was some talk about that because of the school
that he went to, and Odell Beckham Junior had famously
gone to that school, but it's not like it was
a football factory. And a lot of the competition, I

(02:06:19):
mean you saw some of the highlights, it looked like
he was playing some pewee team sometimes. I mean, it
just did. So there was some discussion about the fact
that is how much of it is his name, how
much of it is his uh is his prospect profile
as far as you if you change his name to
Archie Jones. But every single recruiting service had him at

(02:06:43):
the very least as one of the number one or
number two quarterbacks in the code who played private high
school football, by the way, and he did. Yes, So
you're saw one hundred and fifty schools and I'm wrong,
I'll say one hundred hundred, one hundred schools said we
believe that arch Manning could be a quarterback of our
football program. Is that kind of dismayed though, Well, he
went to a private school that he won't be taken seriously.

(02:07:03):
He was number He was number one on twenty four
to seven sports that year. Number two was Nico Yamayava.
He was the number two. I can't no doubt about it.
Quarterback and what is his career bit not very good?
Two schools too correct. Yes, so, I mean there's just
there's no guarantee and I'm pulling this up. The other

(02:07:24):
quarterback is Dante Moore. He committed to UCLA. I don't
even know where that dude is now. He's at Orgon
do I Look, it would be foolish for us not
to say the name hasn't helped him. Foolish. Well, it
certainly helped him financially as well. Man. The amount of
commercials its okay? Hey, now I thought it was funny.

(02:07:46):
Seventeen completions first half, though more more arge commercials than completions. Yeah,
that's just fairy. They he could have been better. He
missed some easy throws late. He made some good throws
I mean sorry, he missed some easy throws early, made
some better throws late, and the interception was bad. The

(02:08:08):
interception was bad. Steve east Houston at one nine on
seven ninety Hello Steve, Hey, good at it?

Speaker 3 (02:08:15):
So what's up with herb Street and the dog in
the booth? I don't understand that?

Speaker 2 (02:08:21):
Would you? Matt Thomas?

Speaker 3 (02:08:24):
Mind having your you know, your colleague there at the
booths bringing in his dog?

Speaker 1 (02:08:32):
Well, I work for some dogs. How about that okay, no,
I I it's it's kind of a bit now, thank you, Steve.
I I don't care. I mean the dog is the
dog is getting a lot of run oh dessending opinion.

(02:08:53):
I don't want to be no, no, no, please, because
that's because if because let me tell you, if there's
somebody peg out of my control room, get the dog
out of my control room. I'm sorry. That's what I
would be saying if I was trying to work a broadcast.
It's cute, it's fuzzy. I don't need God knows if
somebody's allergic to pet dander or something. I don't need
some slobbery and dog all over my control room when

(02:09:14):
I'm trying to run a broadcast. It's cute. You can
bring him on the plane. They treat them better than
Lee Corso. They treat with the dog flies charter. It's
Lee Carso has to fly dark breast. It's a good bit.
They went next man up. One of the dogs died.
Now a new dog gets and then how about this,
The dog took a massive crap before the kid kicked
the field goal to win a half million dollars for real? Yes, okay,

(02:09:34):
that's what I'm saying, I don't need piss and pooh
and slobber and hair anywhere I'm trying to work. It's
cool Kirk carb Street. Clearly this is like an emotional
support situation for him. It feels like to me, I
can't then that's okay, but I don't need it in
my control. You might be right, because look, I love
my dogs, but I can work without my dogs. Yes, exactly,

(02:09:58):
he might be able to work with his I don't
want to call it a crutch. What's a better ways
say that? A there's something that emotional support. I'll just
keep it with that, yeah, because you know, look, uh,
Kirk travels a lot. No, I'm not putting my head
set on a slobbery and dog. He did put that. No,
it was like forty it was like forty eight to fourteen.
About that time added some value to you got to

(02:10:20):
do something. Yeah, okay, it was the two minute warning
and it was forty eight to fourteen. So maybe we're cool.
But by the way, here's what. You can't take the dog.
By the way, listen to me very carefully. You can't
bring your dog to the grocery store. Don't do that. Yeah,
y'all stop doing Stop doing it. I don't mind you
bring going to restaurants with it. It's too much on

(02:10:40):
planes too. People are bringing like great Danes on planes.
Oh they're not. Stop. You have to know you can't do.
You can't bring a great day in a plane. You can't.
They got to go in either your purse or a
little little small carriers. You can. Now you're just making stuff.
Wasn't there something? No, I saw it on the interview.
That's not that's Mirriat doing that. Well now they're bankrupt,
by the way. You see the story about the Australian

(02:11:01):
airline that got sent to me. Look images right here
great danes on planes.

Speaker 7 (02:11:04):
No, you're not.

Speaker 1 (02:11:05):
Those are ani. Generally you cannot bring a great Dan
on a plane. I'm sorry you can't. I've seen it
on the internet. It must be true. So there's an
Australian airline that had all the toilets weren't working. They
told the they told the people on the plane either
use bottles or this vomit bag or the botmit bag
or hold it. I'm gonna tell you something right now.

(02:11:27):
How can't they land the plane in the lank Yeah,
they can absolutely no, I'm.

Speaker 6 (02:11:31):
Gonna so the.

Speaker 1 (02:11:35):
The airplane. Plane doesn't have a bowl. It's just a hole, right,
But it goes into some sort of septic system. Yes,
this doesn't go it doesn't go over forty three thousand feet.
You can't just fill that bad boy up. I don't know,
but I'm telling you. If the fight attendant says we're
going from here, I'm going to New York and you
go into the bathroom with a water bottle, I could

(02:11:57):
do that. Yeah, And as you dump, can you you
dump the water boll on the trash Canada the bathroom?
What if that that doesn't satisfy your your intestines? If
what if you had a what if you had a
heavy salty meal before the flight? Well then you take
the vomit bag in there and you and and then

(02:12:17):
and what take a break? Take a break? Thirteen. It
is the Matt Thamas Show Sorts. Seven. If I'm on
a plane I'm going to New York, which I'm going
to New York in two weeks and they say we
will have no commode, I'd be like, get me off
this gd plane. If I gotta go home, I want
to go seven ninety Okay, welcome back to the Mad

(02:12:39):
Tama Show with Ross it is. Believe it or not,
the weekend kept it up in forty minutes. Right now
brings you the NFL rewind from this weekend which nothing happened. No,
a few things happened. I mean there's some NFL news
and notes and things to get too, Matt. We mentioned
this earlier on the news that but that was an

(02:13:00):
hour ago, so we can bring it back up. According
to Michah Parsons, who is now a Green Bay Packer,
his agent David Mullagetta, talking on ESPN's first Take, said
that the Cowboys were never told that Michael Parsons would
not play, and he would have played. Quote never. I mean,
Micah loves the game too much. He was going to

(02:13:22):
play no matter what, Believe him or not. David mullagedta
that Michael Parsons would have played come week one for
the Dallas Cowboys.

Speaker 7 (02:13:33):
Not not not not not.

Speaker 1 (02:13:34):
Now you think he would have sat on actual games? Absolutely, Okay,
he did. The relationship between he and Jerry Jones was
so ugly and so nasty. Down the stretch, he forced
the train, he got it, he won. Hmm. Okay, well,
I'll take your word on that also from David David Mulligeda.

(02:13:57):
I know where you're gonna go with this one, Matt,
believe him or not. I think the most important thing
is Micah wanted to be a cowboy. He grew up
cheering for the cowboys days ward in the NFL with
the Dallas Cowboys. He wanted to be a cowboy. We
did everything we could for him to remain a cowboy.

(02:14:20):
Next story, forty one million dollars a year they offered
and they turned down. Now, of course they got forty seven,
So I mean that makes sense. But you know what
else are you gonna do? All right, well, Matt, elsewhere
you have with the Giants, you know that Russell Wilson
on their ownofficial depth chart is their starting quarterback. Jackson

(02:14:41):
Dart listed ahead of their depth chart ahead of Jamis Winston,
and they signed Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston the offseason
kept him both drafted Jackson Dart and now it goes
Wilson Dart Winston on their depth chart. The depth charts
are are usually put out by pr people, not about

(02:15:02):
the head coach. That's true, so I will take it
with a grain of salt. How does Jameis Winston feel
about all this? Are the crab legs good in New York?
But by the way, probably I did watch a little
National TV yesterday since I was working for Astros. Okay,
do you know who you who? I like on ESPN? Uh?

Speaker 5 (02:15:21):
No?

Speaker 1 (02:15:22):
Cam Newton?

Speaker 7 (02:15:23):
Oh you do?

Speaker 1 (02:15:23):
I think he was. Now he's got weird ass hair,
but he's really good as a as an analyst. Okay,
so he is. Thomas Sports Enterprises Media division is bullish
on Cam Newton as a broadcaster. Okay, man, Well let's
go locally here for a moment. The Rams have said
that they expect Matthew Stafford to start the opener versus

(02:15:47):
the Texans. They expect him to finish it though. Well
we'll see our old friend Sarah Barshop. Now report continue
on you not your friend? No old friend Sarah barsh
Up with the report from ESPN. I think she works
for ESPN LA. Stafford missing the first month of training
camp dealing with the back injury. He has been a

(02:16:09):
full participant in practice since August eighteenth, McVeigh saying that
Stafford will participate in the full week of practice leading
up to the Rams Week one game against Texans. So
wait a minute, he's been practicing for two weeks and
we're supposed to be concerned about this now. While we
had the caller said he wasn't gonna play right. Yes,
the caller had a gut feeling on that. How are
we feeling about that? He is feeling he was praying

(02:16:30):
for that to happen. He's thinking about flying the New
York and trying to inject a state knife in the
back of Matthew Stafford. Oh really, yeah, okay, interesting, that's
that's a good feeling that caller is gonna lose, all right, man.
Speaking of unofficial depth chart the Houston Texans' out, they have,
let's go left to right on the offensive line, arionce
Urseri Lake and Tomlinson at Jake Andrews at Ingram Titus Howard.

(02:16:56):
How we feel scared to death? I'm feeling good, feeling confident.
That's because you'ress top twenty five offensive line in the
NFL Top twenty five. You heard it here first. What now,
I just say something rude, but I'm not gonna do it.

(02:17:18):
I'm glad I held your tongue. Yeah, I'm being trying
to be more polite. It's football time in the Houston, baby,
let's get it going. It's division around lost time in Houston.
I'm not feeling great about my Texans to win prediction
that I made a gut feelings, but you know, you
give your gut feeling what it is at the time.
What was your gut feeling? I think I said twenty three,
twenty three, twenty No, it's I tell you nineteen sixteen text.

(02:17:38):
Let tells. If the texts are gonna win, I'll be
and you're welcome because you know what I am. The
Texans insider. Yes, Liberty White Matt here on the show.
Also of note, Matt listed as the starting wide receivers.
You have Nico Collins, Christian Kirk, and Jaden Higgins. Where's
mister Noel? Noel listed behind Christian Kirk. I don't know

(02:17:59):
if that so it doesn't have an official slot designation,
but that's where Kirk will operate. Okay also listed as
their number one running back Nicholas Chubb over Damian Pierce,
then dary Ogunbawally, Woody Marks and British Brooks over under
sixty yards on Nick Chubb this Sunday over or under

(02:18:22):
under Okay Damian Pierce can bust one. Yeah, all Texas,
one of those guys bust one. They'll get the over
sixty number. Well, any individual Texans rusher over rush for
sixty years and explosive play counts as twenty plus. Well
they have an explosive run, yes they will. No, I
mean they can bust off tackles. I mean sometimes you

(02:18:43):
can do it on your own. A man can hope,
man can dream. I will say no explosive runs for
the Texans, and I want to be basically saying that
Texas are gonna lose. No, I'm not. Offensive line is
gonna be twenty fifth this week. I think the short
past game is gonna be effectively the running to whom
Christian Kirk is gonna find Kirk. Yeah, Christian Kirk, I

(02:19:05):
mean Dalton Schultz. Yeah, Nico Collins, you can hit him
on some some quick stuff as well. Do the Texans
have to score a defensive touchdown every week to win
double digy games? That's why I said more than two
thirty five and a half used code Spotlight draft Kings
pick six. Yeah, I'm a whore.

Speaker 4 (02:19:22):
What's up?

Speaker 1 (02:19:22):
You are a whore? Me and Jordan Hudson, you and
you're Jordan Hudson whore. Those were Matt's words. By the way,
I wasn't really calling her that. That's what Matt said earlier.
I was you're the opposite of the horror. You're a queen.
All right, there you go, mad, that's your nfl rewind,
thank you very much. All right, Vince wants sucks some masters.
We'll get to him and coming back, Manny, Vince might
off Benny and we got a Frankie Vannie and a

(02:19:45):
Frankie James and god. I even sent h Jonathan some
new WFA in liners hoping he was going to play today,
and we didn't find outuntil like nine o'clock class and
he wasn't working today. And it's fine. We didn't get
the we didn't get we get the board. Ops. You'll
still actually we are we are in the world of communication.
We don't communicate. I'm sorry, producer, schedule, there you go
one eight on The Matt Thomas Show with Ross seven

(02:20:07):
one three two one two five seven ninety seven one
three two one two five seven NINETI Matt and Ross
with you tomorrow on the show. We will have a
shut your ball mass up. Uh ain't nobody got time
for that. We will have hopefully plenty of Astro highlights
against the Yankees to play. Now, does our man producing today?

(02:20:30):
Freddy was his name? Freddy Frankie, Frankie, can he play
a montage tomorrow? Because if we're gonna play, we gotta
play Sinatra right hopefully win. Yeah, it's gonna be a montage,
I hope. So, okay, once you have a quick tough
well't you know who's favorite in the Game of Night?

Speaker 5 (02:20:50):
No?

Speaker 1 (02:20:51):
Do I want to know? One team is a minus
one fifteen? One's a minus one oh five? Oh, so
it is what it is, Max freed over Thrumber. The
juice is going on both sides, all right, So the
Astros can hit lefties. So Frankie, talk to Ross. We're
gonna play montage tomorrow. The Astros are gonna win. We're
gonna I mean, he's been running, Yeah, okay running, Doug Pick,
You've been running, Dug Pipe. Man, It's gonna be great.

(02:21:11):
It's gonna be a great Nook season, Matt, Doug you've
ever been to Bville? I ran them Bville. Eric, Frankie,
you ever you ever going to the fifteenth hole and
taking fourteen shots that picked the ball and said, I
gotta get out of here.

Speaker 5 (02:21:27):
I have done that.

Speaker 1 (02:21:28):
You go for Frankie. No, no, Frankie. Frankie's Frankie. Frankie's
got the online stuff going. What you went to? What's
your number one? Hobby, Frankie? No one hobby?

Speaker 5 (02:21:37):
Man?

Speaker 1 (02:21:38):
I love classical classical music? Yeah, okay. What do you
like a Cheikowsky guy?

Speaker 5 (02:21:44):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (02:21:44):
Man, Uh, you're more of a chopon maybe maybe prokofie
of Oh wow, all right, I like that guy. Why
are you working here? I'm just curious. He's also got
his microphone way louder than Yeah, why are you talking
longer than I? Back off? It's not your show? Oh
now too low it back up. We're just kidding with you. Yes,

(02:22:07):
you've made, You've made. Now are you nervous about believing?
Not coming up? Also, the key to producing the show
is make my microphone louder than Matts. The key, the
key he's actually gonna do it. The key is to
mute Ross and his horrific sports takes. Let's go to
Vince in Midtown seven ninety high. Vince, Hey, you.

Speaker 5 (02:22:28):
Guys are talking about the position players for the Astros. Yeah,
I was wondering what your thoughts were, what your thoughts
were going into next season? Were loaded my position players,
in my opinion, and I'm not sure how straw To
can manage that. You've got two third basemen and I
don't know what all the contractual obligations at all. So

(02:22:49):
I'm just wondering how to manage that with credits and Korea.
And then you got Ureus, who I can see you
take in a lot of do bonds uh, I say minutes,
but innings you know, on some of the infield positions.
So just wonder how you think of strata and Dana
Brad is going to manage that well?

Speaker 1 (02:23:10):
It is for next season obviously.

Speaker 12 (02:23:12):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (02:23:14):
But when this trade was made, the first thing I
thought was, what do you worry do about twenty six?
What is Pretti's health? Can you trade a guy in
pereties who has terrific bat good power, but is coming
off of a severe, severe hamstring injury. Urreus is obviously

(02:23:34):
a tradable commodity. You're gonna have to probably figure out
whether you're gonna resign Caratini or he's gonna go somewhere else.
You're gonna need a backup catcher. I don't think Seesar
Saddazar is a long term solution to be backup Io. Ultimately,
do believe they'd like to get Diaz out of behind
the dish, but that maybe until Christian Walker is gone
as an astro. I do believe there will be some

(02:23:58):
sort of significant tight in the off season, will involve
a player that has played a lot of games. Now
you have to look this up. I'll actually I can
look it up. What is Dubon's contract status? He's got
at least another year. The thing about Dubon that makes
him valuable is he can play multiple defensive positions. He
doesn't make him valuable is the fact he does zero sluck.

(02:24:21):
He's a gold Glover. Yeah, but he's also movable. Yeah.
Next year is his last year. Okay, what do you?
What are you Winson over there for? It's been real.
We love you Mauricio. Yeah, Mauricio unfortunately is very very replaceable,
and when Yurius maybe that person he plays great. Yes,

(02:24:43):
here's the thing. Jacob Meultain, I know has not been
good this year, but the organization's high on him and
maybe this first year of going through rookie growing pains
will make him better for next year, but I could
see him competing for an outfield spot for next year.
He can't remember, Jake my this is a one off
for him. This is from a from a bat standpoint. Yeah,

(02:25:05):
but he's always been great in the field. It's been
a Gold Glof finalist. Yeah, this team is going to
do some things. I do believe the coaching staff will
be severely evaluated, whether that's the right thing and the
wrong thing. That's fun. Happens every single year, That's okay. Yeah,
even teams that make playoffs get rich. I mean Gary
pettis gone so after last year. Yes, so that's going

(02:25:26):
to be evaluated. And I do believe they are probably
a little heavy in the infield when it comes to
utility guys, especially if you're going to do a rotation
that involves Jordan and Jose playing left field. I think
the Jose left field mainstay thing is no longer in play.
I think he may be unfortunately positionless designated hitter. Yeah,

(02:25:48):
but that's what you're want to play. You're not out
there yet, you're not maybe playing more outfield than I
ever thought he was ever going to play. But again,
it's it's already happened. Since he come back, he's played
more left field than I thought he would absolute wonder percent.
And we could ask Joe about that. I just thought
of it. Dang next week. Alrighty now, disappointing. Sorry, but
these are problem Honestly, these are problems that I think
we should probably show for a while. Because we've got

(02:26:11):
thirty days left to go in this season. This thing's
gonna be a bear. You got the Rangers playing excellent baseball.
They have won nine of ten. The Mariners aren't going
away and hiding down the stretch. We go should be fun,
exciting and good for us. We want you to listen
all the games here and talk about seminary. Yeah, yeah,
I mean you're not gonna talk abut anywhere else because
you get a bunchet. Ah, that's rude. You don't want that.

(02:26:33):
You want at least halfway decent conversation. Well, yeah, we
can get to thirty minutes of Jalen Noel versus Jayden Higgins,
but we win have to or who's gonna replace c J?
Excuse me, what do you mean he's getting He's here
for life now. I'm talking about this year though.

Speaker 6 (02:26:50):
C J.

Speaker 1 (02:26:50):
Stroud's gonna be here for What do you mean that
offensive line is gonna let him down? What do you mean?

Speaker 6 (02:26:54):
You know it?

Speaker 1 (02:26:55):
And I tell your ser he's ready to rock baby
Okay Lake and Tomlinson for life. You keep thinking that
there's no running games top twenty five finish folks, now
for the Alfan, please correct yourself, because there are people
bumpa wrong going here ross fielders. They'd be a top
twenty five offensive line. There are thirty two teams. It's

(02:27:15):
not the brag. Yeah, well they're thirty two right now.
Don't you think if you move up seven spots in
a thirty two team list, that's a pretty good movement, right.
I believe he'll beccussed by week three. Yes, I think
it'll be just fine. See, you know, we we still
have our bet that I godated you into, which was
seven and a half. Oh geez, I'll be paying that
off and by the sind of October. Maybe not. No,

(02:27:37):
the schedule's easy. It's a week one on the road
against the right Mike tannenbomb from ESPN. Does it the
Titans win the MC south like tannonbomb? Yeah, the disgraced
former Jets GM correct Okay, do you think somebody like
put something in his coffee to say, let's won't you
have the worst takeout thet spice it up. I got

(02:28:00):
to be honest. If there's anybody winning the AFC South,
not in the Texans, it's probably the Jaguars. Are they
kind of due to be competitive? Isn't Trevor Lawrence due
to be Finally the quarter of the fifth year. We've
been waiting for a breakout for five years. I'm sitting
here going, man, another massive overthrow or an under throw
or hey, I third and ninety threw a past five
yards speaking of a generational prospect who may have hit

(02:28:20):
his ceiling. But Liam Cohen, the new key head coach,
is supposed to be one of the great offensive minds
in football. We'll see what happens. Got some good weapons.
Brian Thomas and company. They frankly have underperformed is under
Trevor Lawrence. Yet they've spent lots of money putting people
around him. I mean, remember that was last year they
spent crazy money on their receiving courts. I feel like

(02:28:40):
if he was that great, things would have worked out
with Doug Peterson. I think Doug Peterson's Good football customers saying, yeah,
maybe it was just a miss. Guess what the smartest
football people do miss on people. I mean it was consensus.
Remember who was a true freshman winning a national championship
at Clemson. Everybody's like, this is if this guy goes
the draft, you can go number one right now. Do

(02:29:01):
you think football people miss more than other people's experts
of other sports? I think it's no, because there's like
there's like thirty rounds of the maybe well not any Moore,
thirty rounds of Major League draft, but there's been usually
only a handful of them are really good. But that's also,
I mean, that's the playerpool. So I don't know, I
don't know. It just feels like when an NBA basketball

(02:29:22):
miss has happened. It's also there's only literally like three
really good players in eleven. We don't care if you
miss or now you're number eleven draft pick, all right,
believe it or not. It's all things about the weekend
seven one three, two, one two five seven nineties. Yes,
right now. It's been at one fifty really for the
last fourteen fifteen years, give or take time. Slots seven

(02:29:43):
one three, two one two five seven ninety seven one
three two one two five seven nine. If you want
to play Believe it or Not here on the Matt
Thomas Show with Ross it is all things about the weekend.
And if you missed our conversation with Joe A. Spotty,
you can always find it on the iHeartRadio app and
the podcast page, also on our website at sports seven
ninety dot com. The University of Texas falling to number

(02:30:06):
seven of the Associated Press poll. Rossy your thoughts, disappointments,
It doesn't matter, despair yet, you know what, It doesn't matter.
That's right, It doesn't matter what your rank is new
top twenty five, Pole is out, Ohio State is number one,
Penn State two, LSU three, LSU going from nine to
three this week. Ohio State up two spots, Penn State

(02:30:28):
state where they are, Georgia four, Miami five They went
up five spots. Texas dropped six spots. Clemson is number eight,
they dropped four. Notre Dame dropped three to number nine.
South Carolin top ten and no receiving votes for University Houston.
That'll change after this week's big win over the Rice House.

(02:30:51):
I mean a lot of big twelve schools in his
top twenty five. By the way, Utah twenty five, Texas
Tech twenty four, Iowa eight sixteen. Hmm good college football season.
Awaitus week won one bad? All Right? Tomorrow on the show,
as we mentioned, we'll have Brian Bogacivic with us. We'll

(02:31:11):
have also shut Up by mess Up. We might even
go check out what's going on in Los Angeles with
the Rams. That'll be a part of the show either
tomorrow or Thursday. Astro start a three game series tonight
with the New York Yankees. And again, if you're going tonight,
it's a seven to ten first pitch tonight. It is
a seven to ten pitch on Wednesday, and then a

(02:31:31):
seven to ten pitch excuse me, a six forty pitch
on Thursday. I think that's because of travel considerations. But
the game tonight will be at seven to ten and
the pitching matchup will feature Max Freed fourteen and five
with an era at three point zero six, Rombert Valdez
twelve and seven with a three point one point eight.

(02:31:52):
It's Max Freed versus a guy who wants his contract
who's always pissed off Romber. Yeah, I don't think he's
always pissed off there. Have you seen him on Twitter?
He's very affable, He's he hasn't tweeted in weeks. Thanks.
By the way, I have a lot of cricket numbers
for weeks. I I get credit for that. By the way,
what I told the world about fromber tweeting, he sucked

(02:32:15):
and then he stopped tweeting. So I say to you,
from what credit do you want? Because nobody even knew
he was around doing that until I told the people
about it. He had like fifty thousand followers when you
were talking about it. I think at least those people knew.
But nobody on radio was talking about except me. I
would well, I don't listen to the radio shows, so
you shouldn't because it's a garbage out there. I mean,
we're the only we're the only show of cality in

(02:32:35):
the marketplace. You said it, not me. You think I
forget it? What else? I didn't disagree? You didn't disagree.
By the way, I almost took Ashton genty in the
draft yesterday. Oh my god, somebody ratted you out that
that you uh that that doctor Rota was talking about
how great ash and gent he was, and you didn't
tell him that you thought he sucked and then he

(02:32:57):
was overrating. He's gonna be fine after he has this
season entering knee injury. It'd be better than year two.
He's getting the thousand this year at let's go really, okay,
what do you want to bet? I need odds? What
just a little bit of oh god, you can't talk
all this bluster and then ask for odds. I'm asking

(02:33:19):
for odds. If you give him to me, it's a
different story. Let me look at his actual Uh, let's
look at his actual actual Vegas line. You don't need odds.
The line is the line? Is the line?

Speaker 6 (02:33:29):
Right?

Speaker 1 (02:33:29):
Yeah? I can't find it? You talk all right? Are you?
How would you do Believe it or not? How about
I says, I tell the audience, we've got five minutes
off to go in the show. What should we do?
We should play America's fastest growing sports radio game show.

(02:33:50):
We simply called it be Believe It or Not? And
